Switzerland - Day Four
WHUFC.com
Swimming, football and ten-pin bowling were all on the agenda on the Hammers' pre-season tour
12.07.2011

It was a mixture of work and play for West Ham United's players as the squad continued their pre-season training camp in Switzerland. Having arrived back at the team hotel late on Monday evening following the 2-1 Uhren Cup defeat by BSC Young Boys in Grenchen, manager Sam Allardyce afforded his players and staff a rare lie-in on Tuesday. The players were still up for breakfast at 8am and heading to their respective training areas a little more than an hour later. Meanwhile, Allardyce and his backroom staff headed for a nearby lake for a welcome early-morning swim. The majority of the squad remained at the hotel to take part in a recovery session in the swimming pool, loosening up any muscles that may have tightened following the previous night's game. A small number of players cycled the two miles to the main training complex, where they were put through a series of technical drills by assistant manager Neil McDonald and first-team coach Wally Downes.

At the same time, the West Ham TV crew were out and about in the town where the Hammers have been based since last Friday. An exclusive feature will appear on the club's own television service on Wednesday. After a hearty lunch, the squad and management boarded the team coach for a short drive to a nearby ten-pin bowling alley for a team-bonding exercise. There, goalkeepers Robert Green, Ruud Boffin and Marek Stech were the stars, with all three stoppers recording scores of over 200 - the Belgian taking the plaudits with a high of 215. Following dinner, the players got together for a team presentation before heading for bed ahead of a day of double-training and Wednesday evening's Uhren Cup meeting with Swiss Super League champions FC Basel.

The official website will publish live text updates from Grenchen on Wednesday, with kick-off at 7.30pm local time (6.30pm UK time).

Sam exclusive on West Ham TV
WHUFC.com
Sam Allardyce has been pleased with how things have gone on West Ham United's pre-season tour
12.07.2011

Sam Allardyce is a contented man. The West Ham United manager has been happy with the way his players have given their all during the club's pre-season training camp in Switzerland, including their committed performance in Monday's 2-1 friendly defeat by BSC Young Boys - his first match in charge. However, Allardyce has told West Ham TV that there is still plenty of work to be done in all areas before the Hammers take to the pitch against Cardiff City on 7 August, both in terms of supplementing the playing squad and improving the form and fitness of the players already at the club.

"I think in terms of a pre-season training camp it's been an outstanding venue from many different aspects," said Allardyce, speaking from the team's hotel in the central Swiss canton of Bern. "We're in a beautiful place, have a fantastic hotel who are attending to our needs and I think we're virtually the only people in the hotel at this time of year and that's a big help. "Down in the valley here, there is a 50-metre pool which has been very good for the morning starts. One or two of the lads are a bit miserable when they're getting up at 6.30 in the morning, but after the pool sessions they've been invigorated for their football training. "Later in the evenings we've been moving on with the strength and conditioning and sport science lads, so it's been a good exercise up to now. "There are a lot of young players who have travelled with us who want to make their mark and I think it's very important to get to know them as soon as possible and the senior players a little bit better not just as footballers but as people. "Hopefully we can pull all that together and by the time this pre-season has finished, I'll have a better overall view of the squad."

Allardyce got his first view of that squad in a competitive environment on Monday, when a young side were narrowly beaten by Swiss Super League side and UEFA Europa League qualifiers Young Boys. The players gave their all during the Uhren Cup tie in Grenchen, despite having got up for a swimming session at 7am and a full training session in the mid-morning. The boss singled out England Under-18 international Robert Hall and England Under-21 defender Jordan Spence for particular praise, with the former rattling the upright with a rasping 25-yard shot late on. "First and foremost, just for everybody concerned, we've been training every day since we've been here from 6.30am. We even trained on the day we played. "It's not the normal preparation for a game but we felt the lads needed to into the game slightly fatigued and we weren't going to play all of the players for the whole game - particularly the senior players who were given 45 minutes each. "It was effectively a training session rather than us going for the result. It was a competitive match against a very good side who had beaten Hertha Berlin 4-2 prior to playing ourselves, so the whole exercise was good from my learning curve point of view."

Government lean on Spurs

The Minister for Sport has 'advised' Tottenham Hotspur to ditch plans to challenge the decision to award preferred bidder status to West Ham. Despite having admitted corporate subterfuge in their attempts to undermine both the OPLC voting committee and members of West Ham United's staff, Tottenham have maintained that they will seek legal recourse - despite having lost the vote to win tenancy of the £500million stadium by 14-0. However that could be set to change after the Conservative Minister Hugh Robertson warned the north London club that their plans to press on with legal action could destroy the capital's bid to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships. Speaking to the media yesterday, Robertson insisted that Tottenham should think very carefully before proceeding. "I would hope Tottenham would see the greater good to London; maybe it's a fond hope," he said. "The initial economic planning tells us it will be a £100million boost from hosting a World Athletics Championship. I hope anyone involved in sport would see the greater good, whatever their feelings about the stadium process. "I find it frustrating that having been through the process we are now being dragged through the High Court, having won the first round we have the appeal to come. "If we win that we will bid [to host the Championships], but I will not let the country bid if we have not got a locked-down secure venue, given the backdrop of previous bids."

Tottenham recently announced that they were seeking public funding after revealing plans to build a new stadium within their current borough of Haringey. Mr Robertson's warning could be seen as the first indication that should they refuse to play ball and back down over the Olympic Stadium issue, any such funding could be extremely unlikely to follow.

Chelsea seek Parker loan deal

Chelsea are said to be looking to sign Scott Parker - but only on a temporary basis. Since the end of last season it's been a case of 'when' rather than 'if' the thrice-recognised Hammer of the Year leaves the Boleyn Ground. Tottenham had been strongly linked but the recent and very public Olympic Stadium row would appear to have put an end to any chance of that happening. In recent weeks both Aston Villa and Everton have expressed an interest - but fellow Londoners Chelsea are now said to have stepped in following the long-term injury sustained recently by defensive midfielder Michael Essien. With the Ghanaian facing at least six months on the sidelines, new Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas is said by today's (Wednesday's) Times to have contacted West Ham with view to a long-term loan deal for Parker, who will be 31 this October. Such an arrangement could prove beneficial to West Ham should Sam Allardyce mange to achieve an instant return to the Premier League.
However were United to fail to secure promotion this coming season, an aging Parker's value would take a substantial hit in the meantime - resulting in a smaller transfer fee should he then seek a permanent move away this time next year.

It's a Gud'en

West Ham are hoping to finally secure the signature of Eidur Gudjohnsen - at the third time of asking. United's bid to take the the out-of-contract striker is the third occasion in the last four years that the club have shown major interest in signing the former Barcelona star. Back in 2007, Alan Curbishley was close to landing the Icelandic international after Gudjohnsen was told he was surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp. Following a long and protracted saga the 32-year-old opted instead to remain at Barcelona in order to fight for his first team place. A year later he was again linked with a move to east London but that proved to be little more than paper talk. However in January 2010 Gudjohnsen - by then at Monaco - was finally on his way to England to join Tottenham, not Gianfranco Zola's West Ham - despite having spent a week in the capital at United's expense. The snub proved especially disappointing to Zola, who admitted that he was "not the happiest man in the world about what happened", in reference to Gudjohnsen's 11th-hour switch to Spurs. But having rejected Curbishley and Zola, Gudjohnsen is now thought to favour a move to West Ham i norder to team up once again with Sam Allardyce, for whom he worked at Bolton in the late '90s/early '00s. * Sky Sports News claimed this afternoon that West Ham have held talks with Blackpool striker DJ Campbell. West Ham met the 29-year-old's minimum release fee some weeks ago but Campbell has been trying to secure a move to a Premier League club.

Hammers target Gudjohnsen
Allardyce keen to work with former Bolton striker again

Skysports.com understands West Ham are poised to sign experienced striker Eidur Gudjohnsen. The Iceland international, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Fulham, is a free agent after his one-year deal with Stoke expired. The former Bolton, Chelsea and Barcelona player struggled to make any impact at the Britannia Stadium and failed to find the net during 10 appearances with the Cottagers. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is keen to link up with Gudjohnsen again having worked with the forward during their time together at the Reebok Stadium. The 32-year-old is due to undergo a medical at Upton Park on Thursday and could then put pen to paper on a one-year deal. Allardyce is eager to bolster his striking options ahead of the new Championship season, particularly with Carlton Cole expected to depart for pastures new. Gudjohnsen came close to joining the East London club in January last year, but instead elected to spend a spell on loan with Tottenham from Monaco.

Montano earns Hammers stay
Teenage forward hoping to force his way into Allardyce's plans

Cristian Montano has been handed a contract extension at West Ham and is now setting his sights on the first-team. The Colombia-born 19-year-old endured a frustrating 2010/11 campaign - his first as a professional at Upton Park. A succession of niggling knocks prevented him from forcing his way into contention during what proved to be a difficult season for the Hammers as a whole. The talented forward is ready and raring to go ahead of the new season, though, and hopes the award of a new contract is a sign of better times to come. Montano told the club's official website: "I'm very proud of this contract and I'm happy with myself as well. I have got my second contract which is the most important thing. "Hopefully I can keep going from here and make the next step, which is to make my first-team debut and hopefully become established. I want to prove myself."

Clean slate

Montano believes he could come into contention for the start of the new Championship season, with Sam Allardyce offering all of those at Upton Park a fresh start.
He added: "It's not impossible. I'm going to keep working hard and hopefully show the new manager that I can play and do well. "We're all in the same boat, a new manager and new staff, so we've all got to prove ourselves again, which is not an easy thing to do because we've all got to start from scratch."

Hammers hold Campbell talks
West Ham have reportedly opened talks with Blackpool striker DJ Campbell as they prepare for Carlton Cole's Upton Park exit.

The 29-year-old Campbell is reported to have attracted Premier League interest following the Seasiders' relegation out of the top flight last season. Sunderland were reported to be leading the chase early on, while Aston Villa have also been linked with an approach. Campbell plundered 13 goals in the top flight last season, proving he has what it takes to compete among England's elite. He could, however, be tempted to remain in the second tier and join West Ham's promotion push. The Hammers are looking to bounce back into the top flight at the first time of asking and Sam Allardyce is busy piecing together a squad capable of taking that step.
It is understood that he is keen to bring Campbell on board and discussions regarding a possible deal have begun. Striker Cole is expected to join Stoke City this week after the Hammers accepted a bid from the Potters for him.

Stoke City have agreed a fee with relegated West Ham for striker Carlton Cole it has been confirmed. England forward Cole, 27, is currently in Switzerland with West Ham for a pre-season training camp but us due to hold talks with Stoke City manager Tony Pulis upon his return. Stoke chairman Peter Coates told Sky Sports: "We have agreed terms with West Ham, that's done. Now it's a case of can we agree terms with Carlton?" Cole joined West Ham from London rivals Chelsea in July 2006 and scored 42 goals in 165 appearances. But he managed just five league goals last season and is now set to leave Upton Park. The fee has been reported to be an initial £4 million with a possible £2 million in add-ons. Coates said Stoke had tried to sign Cole on previous occasions but was optimistic that this time the forward would make his way to the Midlands club, who lost in last season's FA Cup final to Manchester City. "We come from two different places. He has got an injury problem (Cole has had knee trouble) - he has always had that - and that is a risk you take so we have to factor that in," he said. "But he is a good player and Tony has always liked him. Manager's like different players but Tony has always liked him. "I think we've tried to sign him around three times over the past few years without succeeding so maybe we will get somewhere this year. "Now we've done a deal with the club it really needs his input with the player because he likes to talk to them and make sure they are on board, and he is on board and everything is ok from his point of view. "But we see that work in progress and hope that something can be done."

O'Brien impresses West Ham boss Allardyce

Hammers manager Sam Allardyce is keen to bring in former Bolton midfielder Joey O'Brien, if he can come through pre-season training unscathed. West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is keen to bring his former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Joey O'Brien to Upton Park – if he can prove his fitness. The 25-year-old played 45 minutes in Monday's opening pre-season friendly against Young Boys and Allardyce is convinced that he can be a useful player in their Championship campaign. "He is an outstanding player," the West Ham boss told the
Recorder from Switzerland this week. "For someone to play 28 times in the Premier League at the age of 19 shows that he has a lot of talent and if he is fit then he could be a very good player for us."

Fitness is the key for O'Brien, who has three international caps for the Republic of Ireland. His recent career has been plagued by injury and he ended last season on loan at League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday. Allardyce is well aware of the risks. "He has to prove his fitness," he said. "He has had a very frustrating time with injuries over the last two and a half years because he was misdiagnosed and then didn't receive the right treatment. "But it was good to see him come through 45 minutes on Monday without any reaction and now we will just have to see how it goes with him. We have him until the end of pre-season before we have to make a decision."

Allardyce has spoken to the England internationals in the squad and he revealed that at least one of them could be persuaded to stay for the new season. Scott Parker, Robert Green and Carlton Cole are all on the tour of Switzerland, but are interesting a host of Premier League clubs. "We sat down and chatted and they said they were happy to do their pre-season training with us and see what happened," said the manager. "Obviously we are a business as well as a football club and if the right sort of bid comes in for a player then we would have to look at it and we would certainly keep the player aware of what is going on, but I am hopeful that they won't all be leaving."

Allardyce also confirmed that the club are talking to another of his Bolton old boys in Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen. "We are certainly interested in bringing him to West Ham," said the boss. "But negotiations on this one are at a very early stage." The West Ham squad are in Switzerland until tomorrow and the manager is convinced that it has done everyone a lot of good. "We are having three training sessions a day and also having plenty of time to do other things which will enable the team to bond – the old ones and the young ones," said Allardyce. "We are cut off from everything here and that means we can totally focus on ourselves and what we have to do for the coming season. "Everyone is working really hard, but I think they are also enjoying it."

West Ham play their final match on the tour today (Wednesday) against Basel with a 7.30pm kick-off. While this Saturday a Hammers XI will travel for a friendly at Bishop's Stortford.

Fans get shirty after West Ham drop Bobby Moore Fund from junior kits

West Ham have provoked anger among fans by removing the Bobby Moore Fund from their junior replica shirts. For the past three years the logo of the Bobby Moore Fund, which raises funds for research into bowel cancer in memory of England and West Ham's World Cup-winnng captain, has adorned the club's boys' and girls' shirts. But the claret and blue shirts for 2011-12, priced from £29.99, now say 'Forever United' and show a logo of the Olympic Stadium. The Championship club were named as the preferred bidders for the Olympic Stadium in February. Fan Ian Morgan wrote on Twitter: 'Last year they dropped the Bobby Moore Cup for (the) Sbobet Cup - disrespectful to our greatest player and a great cause.' The club's 'formal three-year partnership' with the Bobby Moore Fund ended in July, but West Ham insist the charity will continue to play a 'prominent role' in its future. A West Ham statement said: 'The club's status along with Newham Council as recommended preferred bidder for the Olympic Stadium will mean heightened exposure for all connected with West Ham United - namely, from a charitable perspective, the Bobby Moore Fund and the Richard House Children's Hospice in Beckton.

'In addition to vast public and media awareness, the club has generated significant funds, with supporters digging deep time and time again as well to give generously to such a worthy cause. 'BMF-branded merchandise has also made an impact with the club donating more than £34,000 in royalties, and the club and Fund will continue to liaise on commercial and marketing opportunities to the benefit of all.'

CHELSEA SEEK SCOTT PARKER LOAN

Wednesday July 13,2011
By Daily Express reporter

CHELSEA have approached West Ham about the possibility of signing Scott Parker on a season-long loan as cover for the injured Michael Essien. It is unclear whether the Hammers are interested in such a deal that would see Chelsea pay a small loan fee and cover Scott Parker's £70,000-a-week wages for a season. West Ham are asking for about £8million for a permanent deal for Scott Parker, but a loan would give them the option of taking the midfielder back if they return to the top flight.

Cristian Montano is eager to show his worth after signing his second
professional contract
12.07.2011

Cristian Montano is aiming to catch the eye of manager Sam Allardyce after
signing a new professional contract with West Ham United. The talented
forward endured a difficult 2010/11 season after signing his first
professional deal a year ago, suffering a succession of niggling injury as
he looked to build on the Doris Bell Award he won at the end of the previous
campaign.
Now he is fully fit and raring to go, the Colombia-born 19-year-old is
hoping to earn a regular place in the first-team squad for 2011/12 by
impressing Allardyce during pre-season. He has made a good start by being
named in the lineup for last night's friendly against BSC Young Boys. "I'm
very proud of this contract and I'm happy with myself as well," he told West
Ham TV. "I have got my second contract which is the most important thing.
"Hopefully I can keep going from here and make the next step, which is to
make my first-team debut and hopefully become established. I want to prove
myself."

Montano is also eager to impress the same supporters he wowed by scoring two
goals during Academy Director Tony Carr's Testimonial match in May 2010. The
teenager travelled to Austria with the first-team squad for their pre-season
tour in July last year, only for injuries to ravage his first campaign as a
professional. "As a second-year scholar, I managed to do really well and win
the Doris Bell Award, which I was really happy with and which, at the time,
was a bit unexpected," he added. "As a first-year pro I just wanted to carry
on from where I'd left off, which I did, but when we got back from the tour
the injuries started kicking-off and it was a bit stop-start for me.
"Obviously I managed to get fit again and here I am. I've got my next
professional contract and I want to carry on from there."

With Demba Ba, Victor Obinna and Robbie Keane having departed the Bolyen
Ground this summer, Montano is preparing to impress Allardyce between now
and the opening npower Championship fixture against Cardiff City on 7
August. "It's not impossible," he said. "I'm going to keep working hard and
hopefully show the new manager that I can play and do well. "We're all in
the same boat - a new manager and new staff - so we've all got to prove
ourselves again, which is not an easy thing to do because we've all got to
start from scratch. "I've come back in good shape and hopefully I can get a
bit stronger, too."

Irons accept Stoke's Cole bid
Tuesday 12th July 2011 14:03
TeamTalk

West Ham have reportedly accepted an offer from Stoke for striker Carlton
Cole, who will now discuss personal terms with the Potters. The England
international slipped out of the Premier League with the Hammers last season
and was expected to be among those heading out of the club this summer. He
is a proven top-flight performer and there was always going to be plenty of
potential suitors willing to offer him a route back to the big time. Stoke
have been linked with an approach for much of the transfer window, with Tony
Pulis known to be in the market for attacking talent. He has now made his
move for Cole, with a formal bid on the table. The finer details of that
offer are acceptable to West Ham and it will now be up to the Potters to
thrash out personal terms with the 27-year-old. Should Cole complete a
switch to Stoke, he could be joined at the Britannia Stadium by Cameron
Jerome. It is believed the Potters are still in talks with the Birmingham
forward and are hopeful of reaching an agreement.

is now poised to move on in the wake of the Hammers' relegation. The fee is

QPR have agreed a deal to sign Kieron Dyer. Dyer was available on a free

just 30 league appearances. The 32-year-old, who cost the Hammers £6million

League new boys and has signed a short-term performance-related deal. Dyer,
who spent last season on loan at Ipswich, has 33 caps for England but hasn't
featured since 2007, when Steve McClaren was in charge.

West Ham hope Eidur Gudjohnsen won't change his mind again
Ken Dyer
12 Jul 2011
Evening Standard

West Ham today stepped up their bid to sign Eidur Gudjohnsen despite
interest in the former Chelsea striker from newly-promoted Premier League
club Swansea. West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, who saw a youthful Hammers'
team lose 2-1 to Swiss League champions BSC Young Boys in Grenchen last
night, is keen to add the 32-year-old to his depleted squad before the start
of the new season. Swansea, who are managed by former Watford boss Brendan
Rodgers, also want to sign the ex-Bolton, Chelsea, Barcelona and Monaco
striker, who is now a free agent. Gudjohnsen almost signed for West Ham on
loan from Monaco in January 2010 but changed his mind on transfer deadline
day and instead moved to Tottenham. The Icelandic star helped Spurs claim a
Champions League place for the first time in their history but manager Harry
Redknapp decided not to offer him a permanent deal to stay at White Hart
Lane. He then went to Stoke but failed to make an impact at the Britannia
Stadium and joined Fulham on loan for the last three months of the season,
making 10 appearances for the west London club.

Carlton Cole's proposed move to Stoke, meanwhile, looked less likely today
after the striker failed to agree personal terms. A fee of £4million plus
another £2m based on appearances had been agreed between the two clubs but
the England frontman, who has also interested Queens Park Rangers, is
unhappy with the deal offered by Stoke.

West Ham's other England stars, Robert Green and Scott Parker, were both
missing from the team that lost in Switzerland last night, amid more
speculation surrounding their futures. Tottenham, Aston Villa and Chelsea,
who are looking for a replacement for midfielder Michael Essien because of
his long-term knee injury problems, have been linked with Parker but a West
Ham spokesmen confirmed today that there had been no offers for the
30-year-old former Charlton player. The Upton Park club also confirmed that
they had received no bids for Green despite reported interest from West Brom
and insisted James Tomkins - who has been linked to Wolves - is not for
sale.

Allardyce, who told the Evening Standard last week that he is hoping to sign
eight new players before the start of the season, looks like missing out on
Blackpool striker DJ Campbell, who has activated a release clause in his
contract and will stay in the Premier League. Former Chelsea youngster Frank
Nouble scored West Ham's goal in their 2-1 defeat by BSC Young Boys - the
team who gave Spurs a scare in last season's Champions League play-off.
Trialists Hernani Da Rosa and Joey O'Brien both featured, as did new signing
Abdoulaye Faye but West Ham's other summer acquisition, former Bolton and
Newcastle star Kevin Nolan, was not included.

July 12th, 2011 - 12:51 pm by Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die

Lots of transfer rumours at the moment. The trouble is they all seem to be
about players leaving the club. There's a distinct lack of rumours about
players arriving. In some ways that might be a good thing if the usual
suspects at the club have decided to keep their gobs shut for once.

Here are a few highlights

* Scott Parker to Chelsea to cover for the injured Michael Essien.
* West Brom in for Rob Green for £4.5 million.
* Wolves want Matthew Upson.
* Swansea & West Ham are competing for Eidur Gudjohnsen
* Bolton and Wolves are interested in James Tomkins
* The porposed move of Carlton Cole to Stoke seems to have gone quiet.

I would be gutted if we sell James Tomkins. He is an England defender of the
future. He, Mark Noble and Jack Collison must be held onto at all costs.

Switzerland - Day Three
WHUFC.com
Swimming, training and a pre-season friendly all meant for another busy day
for the Hammers squad
11.07.2011

A keenly-fought and thoroughly respectable 2-1 friendly defeat by BSC Young
Boys completed another long day of hard work for the players of West Ham
United.
The third full day of the Hammers' pre-season tour in central Switzerland
saw Sam Allardyce and his squad conduct two training sessions ahead of their
opening Uhren Cup fixture. The players were up early ahead of a 7am swimming
session before returning to their hotel for breakfast. After a short rest,
Allardyce led the way as the group cycled the two miles to the club's
training complex, where a short warm-up was followed by keep-ball, an 11v11
match and some set-piece and tactical drills.
After a rest and a pre-match meal, the squad boarded the team coach for the
hour-long drive to Grenchen, arriving at the Bruhl Stadium 90 minutes before
the 6pm kick-off.

At the same time, club representatives attended a civic reception at the
town's regional airport, which is renowned for being the watch-making
capital of Switzerland. There, they were welcomed by town president Boris
Banga, head of culture and sport Barbara Pestalozzi and airport CEO Andreas
Wegier. Signed pennants were presented to Banga and Pestalozzi, while a
series of speeches were made, including one by West Ham thanking the people
of Grenchen and Switzerland for their outstanding hospitality.

On to the match itself and West Ham's players gave a good account of
themselves against a Young Boys squad just five days away from their opening
Super Liga fixture. With Robert Green, Scott Parker, Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan
and Carlton Cole given the night off, it was a young Hammers team that took
on the UEFA Europa League qualifiers in front of a 7,000-strong crowd. Young
Boys took an early lead through former Switzerland Under-21 international
Marco Schneuwly, but it took just four minutes for Frank Nouble to equalise
with a well-taken near-post header.

It was a big moment for the 19-year-old striker, who has spoken of his
eagerness to impress new manager Sam Allardyce during the pre-season. While
Nouble was looking lively at the attacking end of the pitch, Abdoulaye Faye
and trialists Hernani Da Rosa and Joey O'Brien were making their West Ham
debuts in more defensive positions.

Jordan Brown, George Moncur and Freddie Sears were also given chances to
impress from the start, but it was Young Boys who went in ahead at half-time
thanks to a powerful downward header from Switzerland international defender
Francois Affolter. Allardyce made changes at the break, with Jordan Spence,
James Tomkins, Frederic Piquionne, birthday boy Olly Lee and teenager Robert
Hall all given a run out. Tomkins looked strong after taking over the
captain's armband from Luis Boa Morte, while Piquionne and Hall combined
well - the latter hitting the post with a rasping 20-yard shot late on. At
the other end, Ruud Boffin made two fine saves to deny Young Boys
replacement Emmanuel Mayuka.

While the final whistle arrived with the Hammers still trailing, manager
Allardyce and his players can be proud of a good night's work. The official
website was on hand to capture all of the day's action on camera, and an
exclusive gallery of pictures is published here.

BSC YOUNG BOYS v WEST HAM UNITED
UHREN CUP
MONDAY 11 JULY 2011
KICK-OFF: 6PM

Final score - BSC Young Boys 2-1 West Ham United

West Ham TV will have exclusive highlights and reaction from tonight's game
soon, as well as all the latest from the pre-season training camp in
Switzerland.

91 mins - Into added time and Young Boys have possession. It looks like
being a narrow defeat, but like I said earlier, the result is not important.
The players have looked sharp and fit despite being in pre-season training
for just ten days. The final whistle goes and the two sets of players shake
hands.
90 mins - Piquionne wins the header from Spence's set piece and when
Moncur's shot is charged down, Lee acrobatically volleys it towards goal,
but the effort does not have the power to beat Benito. It's a shot on
target, though.
89 mins - Boffin has been good tonight and he does really well again to race
from his goal and dive at the feet of Mayuka. Great stuff. West Ham win a
free-kick and have a chance to get the ball into the penalty area here.
88 mins - The sun is starting to set here in Grenchen, but there are
certainly signs that West Ham have a bright future. A number of first-team
regulars were not on duty tonight, but the Hammers have more than held their
own against a side that regularly turns out in Europe and is littered with
full internationals.
87 mins - Piquionne again, racing past left-back Alioski and pulling the
ball back, but Sears cannot get there before a defender.
85 mins - Piquionne springs the offside trap and crosses low. Lee picks up
possession and lays the ball back to Ilunga. He finds Hall, who lets fly
with a rasping shot that has Benito flying to his right. The ball looks
destined for the top left-hand corner, but flies inches wide of the upright.
So close to an equaliser. West Ham are finishing strongly.
83 mins - As the game comes towards its conclusion, I can tell you about
some exciting features to come on whufc.com and West Ham TV over the next
few days. There will be all the latest news and photographs from
Switzerland, including a full round-up of Monday's training and match, as
well as post-match reaction from players and management alike. Meanwhile,
West Ham TV will have video coverage of tonight's game, as well as the water
polo and indoor hockey tournaments that have formed part of the players'
training.
81 mins - Argh! Hall sprints away down the left before lifting a fantastic
pass that Vuskovac can only flick on to Piquionne. The striker tries to
control and find Sears, but his pass is blocked behind for a corner. Hall
takes and Benito punches unconvincingly clear, but Young Boys scramble a
goal kick off a West Ham player. Unlucky.
78 mins - The impressive Degen is replaced by Tosetti. The Switzerland
international gets a rousing reception as he makes his way off. He has been
very impressive. In fact, he got my vote for Young Boys' Man of the Match!
78 mins - We're in the capital of the Swiss watch-making industry, but West
Ham are running out of time to score an equaliser. However, tonight's game
is not about the result, it is about fitness and preparation.
77 mins - West Ham are giving their all. Montano commits a foul before he
and Ilunga get involved in some 'handbags' with the home side. Nothing much
happens and Tomkins heads the free-kick clear.
76 mins - Trialist Hernani gets a foot in to divert the ball out for a
throw. He looks very fit and has slotted in well at training. While it
remains to be seen if he is offered a move to the Boleyn Ground, the
Brazil-born Pole has got some good miles in his legs this evening.
73 mins - Take a bow Ruud Boffin! The Belgian makes a miraculous save from
Mayuka. Degen raced into the box and cut the ball back for the striker, who
surely only has to hit the target from six yards. However, Boffin was there
to block the ball with his feet before Lee could bring it away. Amazing
save!
72 mins - Spence races clear down the right and delivers a dangerous cross,
but unfortunately nobody is there to attack it and the ball bounces behind.
Young Boys replace Silberbauer with Alexander Farnerud during the break in
play.
70 mins - I have just been asked to vote for my Man of the Match by the
Uhren Cup organisers, along with all the other journalists. I think a number
of West Ham players have done well in the circumstances. They have worked
very hard and, considering this is what amounts to their ninth training
session in three days, are looking fit.
68 mins - Both players are up on their feet and led to the sidelines. The
Hammers players take on some welcome water on the touchline. When play
restarts, the ball is hoofed back to Wolfi, much to the appreciation of the
home fans. Good sportsmanship.
66 mins - Montano is brave and wins a header inside the Young Boys box. As
he does, he clashes heads with Veskovac and both go down clutching their
heads. Meanwhile, Piquionne tries to beat his man and shoots, but it flicks
off a heel and safely into the hands of Benito.
64 mins - For those supporters interested in what colours West Ham are
wearing - claret and blue shirts, white shorts and white socks.
62 mins - A change from the Hammers as Herita Ilunga replaces Jordan Brown.
The DR Congo man has looked very strong in training during the tour.
61 mins - That's the future of West Ham right there. Brown heads clear to
Lee, who neatly turns and finds Hall. He completely outfoxes Affolter, who
can only trip the teenager to prevent him racing clear into the Young Boys
half. Quality stuff.
59 mins - A deep cross from Zverotic picks out Mayuka inside the box and he
should control and test Boffin, but his touch lets him down badly and the
big Belgian collects with ease.
58 mins - Moncur is penalised for a foul about 30 yards from goal. Costanzo
stands over the set piece.
55 mins - Young Boys have the ball in the net for a third time, but it won't
count. Degen was offside.
54 mins - Hall skips past one challenge before the ball breaks to Lee 30
yards from goal. He smashes a first-time shot, but it's always too high and
flies over the crossbar. Good effort, though, from the young midfield
player.
52 mins - Spence picks out Sears' run with a looping ball down the right
channel. Sears gets there and cuts the ball into the box, but Hall is beaten
to it by Vuskovac.
51 mins - That's really good tracking from Montano, who streaks back 30
yards before out-muscling Zverotic and winning a free-kick inside his own
half. He is another with plenty of skill and flair and an eye for goal.
49 mins - This will be a big test for England U18 forward Hall, but the
diminutive forward is a livewire and has pace to burn and a lethal left
foot. He could really catch the eye tonight.
47 mins - Piquionne is playing up front with Hall, with Lee joining Moncur
in central midfield and Tomkins partnering Hernani at the back. Spence is
playing at right-back. Substitute Alioski crosses and Brown clears at the
second attempt.
46 mins - We're back underway again.

Some half-time changes from both sides. The Hammers make five changes, with
Spence, Tomkins, Lee, Hall and Piquionne replacing Faubert, Faye, O'Brien,
Boa Morte and Nouble. Young Boys replace Wolfi, Ben Khalifa, Doubai, and
Spycher with goalkeeper Ivan Benito, Mario Raimondi, Emanuel Mayuka and
Ezgjan Alioski.

Half-time score - BSC Young Boys 2-1 West Ham United

45 mins - Into the final seconds of the half and Montano concedes a
free-kick near his own corner flag. The set piece is delivered and Faubert
heads clear. Seconds later, the half-time whistle is blown and the crowd
erupts in polite applause. Well, Nouble's goal was obviously the highlight,
but there are plenty of reasons for Allardyce to be happy with the
application shown by his players just ten days into pre-season training.
43 mins - That was a let-off. Schneuwly's cross is allowed to bounce by
Faye, who tries to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick. Ben Khalifa
doesn't give it up, though, and pokes the ball past Faye and Boffin. It
rolls across the face of goal to safety. Degen picks up the loose ball and
crosses and two Young Boys throw themselves to the ground. No penalty is
given by Herr Hanni.
42 mins - Nouble shows good strength to hold off Zverotic before finding
Moncur. He shoots, but his effort is blocked on the edge of the penalty area
and Young Boys clear their lines.
41 mins - West Ham's players are giving their all. They have had a busy day
today. The squad were up for a swim at 7am and held a training session at
10.30am ahead of travelling to Grenchen. Manager Sam Allardyce is determined
to get his players 'super fit' for the new season.
39 mins - GOAL! For the second time, a spell of Young Boys pressure brings a
goal. Degen takes the corner and Affolter sends a powerful header into the
net from about six yards.
38 mins - Schneuwly does well, bringing the ball forward 40 yards before
slipping in Degen. Brown challenges and the right winger can only stab the
ball near enough to Boffin for the goalkeeper to divert it behind for a
corner.
38 mins - O'Brien collects a pass from Brown and skips past two challenges
before being crudely brought down. That's a foul, if ever I saw one. Neat
feet from the Irishman.
37 mins - Degen gets clear down the right and crosses low, but Hernani does
well to put off Schneuwly and the No9 can only divert his shot wide of the
target.
36 mins - A chance for Young Boys to get the ball into the danger zone as
Faye knocks the ball behind. The corner comes in, but the big Senegal
international is there again to smash the ball upfield. He is a real
physical specimen, is Faye.
35 mins - Left-back Spycher escapes down the flank, but Sears tracks back
well and blocks his attempted cross.
34 mins - The youngsters are really impressing against what I am told is a
near full-strength Young Boys team. Don't forget that Young Boys went 3-0 up
against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League this time last year.
They are a force to be reckoned with, and the Hammers are coping admirably.
In fact, they could easily be ahead.
32 mins - A break in play as Montano receives treatment. He'll be OK, I
think as it was just a heavy challenge that left him on the turf. Sure
enough, after a quick pit-stop, he is back in thick of it.
30 mins - There is a real competitive edge to this game, with plenty of hard
challenges going in from both sets of players. Young Boys threaten again as
Degen cuts inside Brown, but he drags his shot well wide of the near post.
29 mins - Faye is wrong-footed and for a moment it looks as if Ben Khalifa
is clean through down the middle. Faubert shows great pace to romp across
and thwart the Young Boys attacker. West Ham break and Nouble tries to find
Boa Morte inside the box. The skipper goes down, but referee Nikolaj Hanni
waves play-on.
27 mins - Young Boys break and Costanzo cuts in from the left and hits a
right-foot shot. Boffin jumps, but it flies safely over the top.
26 mins - A ripple of applause as Montano comes within a couple of yards of
putting his side in front. Faubert's hopeful free-kick from near halfway
hung in the air and Montano outjumped Zverotic with ease, but could only
head the ball high and wide of the left-hand post. Good effort from
long-range, though.
25 mins - I should have mentioned that the goal was followed by the playing
of 'Bubbles' over the stadium PA system and a loud cheer from the many West
Ham fans who have made the trip. In the car park before the game, we spoke
to many Swiss Hammers who are delighted to see their club play in their home
country.
22 mins - That will be a real confidence-booster for Nouble, who has a big
chance to impress Sam Allardyce this evening against a club which will play
in the UEFA Europa League this season. He took that goal really well and
showed real intent to get on the end of the cross.
21 mins - GOAL! Nouble! Boa Morte takes the corner quickly and Nouble gets
in front of his marker to glance a fine header inside the far post. He
wheels away in celebration and high-fives Boa Morte. That didn't take long!
20 mins - Better from the Hammers. Brown and Nouble combine before the big
man finds Faubert with a crossfield pass. Faubert crosses and the ball is
headed behind for a corner.
19 mins - The goal has given Young Boys a further boost, as you might
expect. Degen comes forward and tries to play a one-two inside the box, but
Faye is there to stab the ball into the stand. West Ham have it all to do,
as the Swiss look confident in possession. There is a long way to go,
though, of course.
17 mins - GOAL! The home side lead. A cross from the left is headed down by
Ben Khalifa and is slammed home by that man Schneuwly from about eight
yards. Faye and Hernani look to the assistant referee for a flag, but he is
unmoved.
16 mins - Young Boys are coming into the game here. First, Ben Khalifa
shoots low but straight at Boffin. The ball is quickly won back by the
Swiss, who work it to Silberbauer, but he blazes his shot out of the stadium
and on to the roof of the VIP tent outside.
15 mins - Hernani shows why West Ham are interested in signing him. Ben
Khalifa looks to have a yard on the Polish defender, but he streaks back and
makes a perfectly-timed sliding challenge about ten yards outside the
Hammers box. If he'd got that wrong, he might have been sent-off, but he
didn't.
14 mins - There is a good-sized crown in the stadium, with the organisers
expecting around 8,000 fans to turn out tonight. They certainly won't have
been put off by the weather. It is simply gorgeous here in Grenchen.
12 mins - West Ham are playing with a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Boa Morte
supporting Nouble in attack. In midfield, Sears and Montano are out wide,
with O'Brien anchoring behind Moncur. Faubert and Brown fill the full-back
berths, with Hernani playing to the right of Faye at centre-back.
10 mins - Montano himself takes the corner but it is headed away. Young Boys
break quickly from Wolfi's clearance, but Hernani is alert and pokes the
ball away for a throw-in.
9 mins - It's been a fairly quiet start from both teams, aside from Degen's
early shot. West Ham are doing well and keeping the ball inside the Young
Boys half. A free-kick is won and Faye quickly finds Brown. He feeds
Montano, who wins another corner.
6 mins - Good from Nouble, who batters his way through a tackle on the edge
of the penalty area and shoots. The effort takes a deflection and flies wide
for a corner. Boa Morte to take. Zverotic half clears back to Boa Morte,
whose cross hits a defender and drops to another Young Boys player. His
attempted clearance is blocked by Hernani, but the ball flies harmlessly
wide.
5 mins - It should be pointed out that Young Boys are almost at the end of
their pre-season. This is the club's final game before their Super League
opener against FC Basel this coming weekend.
3 mins - Schneuwly this time, getting in behind Brown and bursting into the
box. He cuts the ball back, but Faubert is alert to the danger and hammers
the ball away.
2 mins - Young Boys come again through Degen on the right side of the
penalty area. The ball breaks for him and he shoots from 16 yards. Boffin
flies to his left to parry and dive on the loose ball.

5.59pm - We are underway a minute early. West Ham show first before Young
Boys break down their left through Ben Khalifa, but his cross is hacked away
by Faye for a throw.

5.58pm - The Hammers lineup for a team photo before Boa Morte swaps pennants
with the Young Boys skipper. West Ham will kick-off in bright, warm
sunshine. There is a murmur around the ground, which is flanked to my left
by some truly beautiful mountains. I'll try to upload a photo so you can see
them for yourself. Breathtaking.

5.55pm - Here come the two teams, led by captains Boa Morte and Schneuwly. I
hope Schneuwly isn't involved too much as his name is a bit of a pain to
type quickly!

5.50pm - Another change from the originally published team! Ruud Boffin
starts ahead of Robert Green. There is nothing wrong with Green, as he was
warming up on the pitch a few moments ago. He did return to pre-season
training only last Thursday, so it is possible he will feature in
Wednesday's meeting with FC Basel. So the teams in full are -

West Ham United: Boffin, Faubert, Brown, Hernani, Faye, Sears, O'Brien,
Moncur, Montano, Boa Morte, Nouble

BSC Young Boys: Wolfi, Silberbauer, Schneuwly, Costanzo, Ben Khalifa,
Zverotic, Spycher, Affolter, Degen, Veskovac, Doubai

5.47pm - This year's competition is the 50th Uhren Cup. The PA announcer
welcomes the club and all of the West Ham supporters to Grenchen for the big
occasion.

5.45pm - The Young Boys team is in - Wolfi, Silberbauer, Schneuwly,
Costanzo, Ben Khalifa, Zverotic, Spycher, Affolter, Degen, Veskovac and
Doubai will start. The substitutes for the Swiss club are Benito, Dudar,
Farnerud, Raimondi, Mveng, Mayuka, Tosetti, Nuzzolo and Alioski.

5.40pm - There has been a change to West Ham's starting XI, with Luis Boa
Morte replacing Piquionne, who is now on the bench. Boa Morte will also
captain the side.

5.25pm - Representatives from the club have been welcomed to Grenchen by the
Mayor of the town, Boris Banga, Head of Culture and Sport Barbara Pestalozzi
and Uhren Cup official Frederic Falbriard at the local airport. There, the
Hammers learned that Grenchen is known as the 'Silicon Valley of
Switzerland' and also that Lufthansa pilots are trained at the airport,
which is the third-largest in Switzerland in terms of plane movements. Let's
hope West Ham get their pre-season off to a flying start this evening.

5.15pm - West Ham United's team is in! The starting XI sees Abdoulaye Faye
make his debut at centre-back alongside trialist Hernani Da Rosa. Fellow
trialist Joey O'Brien starts in midfield. The starting XI in full is Green,
Faubert, Brown, Faye, Hernani, Sears, O'Brien, Moncur, Montano, Nouble,
Piquionne. The substitutes are Marek Stech, Ruud Boffin, Herita Ilunga,
Jordan Spence, Winston Reid, James Tomkins, Luis Boa Morte, Junior
Stanislas, Olly Lee and Robert Hall.

Good afternoon and welcome to the town of Grenchen in central Switzerland.
We are some 20km north of Bern as West Ham United kick-off their pre-season
campaign by facing Super Liga side BSC Young Boys, who hail from the Swiss
capital.
The match is the second in the four-team Uhren Cup tournament, with Swiss
champions FC Basel and German Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin BSC the other
two clubs involved.

The competition began on Friday evening, when Young Boys defeated Hertha
4-2. Basel take on Hertha following the Hammers' clash with Young Boys later
this evening. This evening's match will see Sam Allardyce take charge of
West Ham for the first time since he was appointed as manager last month.
Allardyce is expected to name a starting lineup featuring a mixture of
experienced professionals and promising youngsters, while trialists Hernani
Da Rosa and Joey O'Brien could both be given an opportunity to impress.

The Uhren Cup has been running every summer since 1962, when hometown club
FC Grenchen were the winners. Since then, clubs from England, France,
Germany, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine and the former Yugoslavia have all
lifted the trophy. Last year's tournament was won by German side VfB
Stuttgart. Grenchen is world-famous for being the centre of Switzerland's
watch-making industry, with the likes of Breitling and Fortis both based in
the town. The 2011 tournament will conclude with West Ham's clash with FC
Basel on Wednesday evening. Again, whufc.com will have exclusive live text
updates from Grenchen, with kick-off at 7.30pm local time (6.30pm UK time).

West Ham TV was on hand to record exclusive footage of a dramatic mini golf
showdown
11.07.2011

The new npower Championship season may not start until 7 August, but the
competitive juices are already running through the veins of four West Ham
United players.
Jack Collison, James Tomkins, Freddie Sears and George Moncur took advantage
of a break in training at the Hammers' Swiss training camp to go for a round
of mini golf. Collison and Tomkins teamed-up to take the spoils in a
thrilling stroke-play contest, taking the victory by four shots after 18
dramatic holes. It was all-square at the turn, only for the more experienced
duo to pull clear midway through the back nine. Sears came to life with two
holes-in-one in the space of three holes, only for Tomkins to hit back with
one of his own on hole 15. Sears and four-handicapper Moncur clawed a shot
back on the 17th, but it was not enough to stave off defeat. West Ham TV was
on hand to catch every moment of an unforgettable sporting event, securing
interviews with the winning duo and securing footage of the moment a
torrential rain storm threatened to end the match after just five holes. To

West Ham have opened their pre-season campaign with a narrow defeat in
Switzerland. Sam Allardyce - who took his side for the first time tonight -
sent out an inexperienced team for the first game in the round-robin
Uhrenchup tournament, a four team tournament in which each team plays two
matches. West Ham - who touched down in Switzerland on Friday afternoon -
began the game featuring just two players with more than a handful of first
team appearances behind them, whilst triallists Hernani Rosa and Joey
O'Brien both started. All of the goals came in the opening half, with West
Ham falling behind after 17 minutes when midfielder Marco Schneuwly scored
from close range. However West Ham were level just four minutes later when
young striker Frank Nouble reacted first to a Luis Boa Morte corner to head
Allardyce's side level. Both sides subsequently created chances to take the
lead but it was the Swiss side - for whom victory saw them lift the Uhrencup
having won their opening game of the tournament, 4-2 against Hertha Berlin -
who did just that with six first half minutes left on the clock. Danger man
David Degen's corner was converted by Francois Affolter; West Ham's problems
defending set-pieces still clearly evident for all to see. Allardyce and his
newly-assembled backroom team made several changes during the second half
although the vast majority of his more experienced players - the likes of
Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan, Scott Parker and Carlton Cole - all failed to make
an appearance.

Although there were no further goals after the break - Young Boys going
closet to adding one when they hit the post shortly after the restart -
Allardyce will no doubt be pleased with a performance that is likely to tell
him a lot more about his squad than he knew before the game. Next up for
West Ham is the clash with FC Basel here on Wednesday night.

West Ham United: Boffin, Faubert (Spence 46), Brown (Ilunga 62), Hernani,
Faye (Tomkins 46), Sears, O'Brien (Lee 46), Moncur, Montano, Boa Morte (Hall
46), Nouble (Piquionne 46).

Subs not used: Stech, Reid, Stanislas.

Goals: Nouble (21).

BSC Young Boys: Wolfi (Benito 46), Silberbauer (Farnerud 72), Schneuwly,
Costanzo, Ben Khalifa (Raimondi 46), Zverotic, Spycher (Alioski 46),
Affolter, Degen (Tosetti 78), Veskovac, Doubai (Mayuka 46).

Goals: Schneuwly (17), Affolter (39).

Parker eyed for shock Chelsea return
Published 23:01 11/07/11 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

West Ham midfielder Scott Parker is under consideration for a dramatic
return to Chelsea, it emerged last night. The Blues are in sudden need of a
midfielder after discovering Michael Essien could miss six months following
surgery on a knee injury suffered in training last week. Hammers joint-owner
David Sullivan last night refused to confirm whether the club had already
been approached by Chelsea over the transfer of Upton Park talisman Parker.
Confirming the Essien news, a Chelsea statement said: "Following injury to
his right knee in training last week, Michael Essien had surgery today to
repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.
"The surgery was successful and Michael's full recovery could take up to six
months."

New Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas said: "Everyone at Chelsea wishes
Michael well for his recovery. "His team-mates and all the staff and I look
forward to helping him return to playing as soon as possible." Another of
the names linked with a move to Stamford Bridge to replace Essien is that of
Newcastle midfielder Cheik Tiote.
The Ivory Coast star - who only signed a new deal at the club in February -
was superb in his first season on Tyneside, with the highlight of his
campaign the dramatic equaliser in Newcastle 4-4 draw against Arsenal in
March.

Parker, however, appears a stronger candidate, as he is known to Villas-Boas
from his time at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho in 2004-2005. Chelsea's
young coach was impressed by Parker's conduct during his spell in west
London, despite being frustrated by a lack of regular first-team football.
The midfielder also stood out during the ritual, under Mourinho, which saw
players deliver pre-match team talks. Parker went on to prove his leadership
qualities last season when delivering a similar oration to inspire his West
Ham team-mates from 3-0 down at West Brom to grab a point. Signing Parker
would also help boost the club's English contingent.
Chelsea currently have only six domestic players in their squad and one of
those, striker Daniel Sturridge, is expected to either be sold or go out on
loan in search of regular action.

Carlton Cole's wage demands stun Stoke
Published 23:00 11/07/11 By James Nursey
The Mirror

Carlton Cole's move to Stoke is in doubt after the striker failed to agree
personal terms with the Potters. West Ham marksman Cole is set to quit Upton
Park following the Hammers' relegation from the Premier League. Stoke were
given permission to speak to Cole after offering £6million for the England
international. The 27-year-old was expected to fly to Austria to join the
Stoke squad and City's director of football John Rudge remained behind to
accompany him. The Potters do pay big wages but Cole wanted mega-bucks to
uproot from his native London and has now joined the Hammers on their
pre-season trip to Switzerland. Cole's stance could now let Premier League
new boys QPR back into the race to sign him.

Beating West Ham is child's play for Young Boys

The Mirror

Sam Allardyce suffered defeat in his first game in charge of West Ham as
they slipped 2-1 against Swiss side Young Boys. Allardyce was hoping to make
a winning start following his arrival at the east London club last month.
But he now knows there is a major rebuilding job to be done following the
Hammers' relegation from the Premier League. The Irons boss was without
England trio Scott Parker, Robert Green and Carlton Cole – while summer
signing Kevin Nolan was not ready to make his first appearance for the club.
Abdoulaye Faye did make his debut at the heart of the defence alongside
Polish trialist Hernani da Rosa, while Luis Boa Morte was handed the
captain's armband. But strikes from Marco Schneuwly and Francois Affolter
gifted the Europa League qualifiers a friendly triumph in Bern. Teenage
striker Frank Nouble pushed his claims for a first-team place with a
consolation goal. But ex-Blackburn chief Allardyce knows he needs more new
signings to make his squad strong enough to win promotion back to the
Premier League at the first attempt.

David Gold: West Ham midfielder Jack Collison is not for sale

West Ham co-owner David Gold has ruled out the possibility of selling Jack
Collison this summer. Rumours had circulated that both West Brom and Stoke
were interested in the 22-year-old Welsh international. However at the end
of last season Collison publically committed himself to the club and said he
wanted to stay to help the Hammers push for promotion next season. His
representatives are currently trying to thrash out a new deal with the club
and it always seemed unlikely he was going to leave Upton Park, a stance
re-iterated by Gold on his twitter account. "Jack Collison is not for sale
DG," he said while confirming David Sullivan was hard at work to help bring
in the eight new signings manager Sam Allardyce says he needs. "I am with DS
(Sullivan) as we speak and I can promise that he and Sam are working on new
signings 24 hrs a day." Collison missed most of last season with a knee
injury and his current contract expires in 2013.

West Ham are reportedly close to signing former Chelsea striker Eidur
Gudjohnsen on a free transfer. The 32-year-old Iceland star spent last

departure from Craven Cottage. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has worked with
Gudjohnsen before at Bolton Wanderers and is looking to improve his squad as
they prepare to mount a promotion challenge in the Championship next season.

West Ham co-owner David Gold has confirmed that Jack Collison will not be

His current contract expires in 2013 but his representatives are working

Hendon set to quit Gillingham for West Ham role
By talkSPORT
Monday, July 11

Former Barnet boss Ian Hendon is set to join Sam Allardyce on his coaching
staff at West Ham. Hendon, currently assistant manager at Gillingham, is
expected to join the east London club this week as Allardyce looks to
re-assemble the management team at Upton Park. Steve Lomas has already left
the club during the summer after being reserve team boss last season and
Hendon is expected to take over his role as the new development coach.

HENDON JOINS SAM ALLARDYCE AT THE HAMMERS
Tuesday 12 July 2011
GillsConnect.com

Gills assistant manager Ian Hendon has left the Club after just one year to
join the Sam Allardyce revolution at West Ham United as their Development
Coach. Hendon is believed to be currently on the Hammers Switzerland tour
where they are playing in the round-robin Uhrenchup tournament, a four team
tournament in which each team plays two matches. West Ham and big Sam
Allardyce, with his newly-assembled backroom team, made several changes
during their opening game but finished with a narrow 2-1 defeat against
Young Boys on Monday afternoon. Allardyce said late last week that he was
looking for an experienced coach to link the club's academy and developing
players to the first-team squad. Gills will be entitled to some compensation
for losing Ian Hendon and the delay in an official announcement from either
Club is possibly due to an acceptable agreement not yet being reached.
Expect an announcement in the next few days. Hendon was not in the Gills
Hayes Lane dug-out at the Bromley friendly and manager Andy Hess refused to
deny or confirm any West Ham appointment when asked. In a bizarre
merry-go-round last June, Hendon joined Gills from Dover after being
recommended to the Whites by Andy Hess, who himself had left Dover, only for
Hendon to suddenly leave the Whites without signing a contract and arriving
at Priestfield instead. As a cost saving measure, the Gills assistant
manager vacancy need not be filled by an outside applicant as either first
team coach Nicky Southall could be promoted or Andy Hess could call on his
brother-in-law and Youth team manager Darren Hare, who was in the dug-out
Bromley on Saturday. All three are pictured left, on the touch-line at the
Bromley game on Saturday, looking after the Gills squad. Should the Gills
look outside of Priestfield then there are a number of good possible
contenders that would bring valuable experience to help Andy Hess such as
Wally Downes, Stuart Murdoch and an ex-Gill legend, Iffy Onoura.

West Bromwich Albion poised to bid for Robert Green and Shane Long
West Ham goalkeeper also on Newcastle's radar
Reading likely to demand £8m for Irish striker
Stuart James
guardian.co.uk, Monday 11 July 2011 22.30 BST

West Bromwich Albion are expected to table a bid for the West Ham United
goalkeeper Robert Green this week and the Midlands club are also interested
in signing Shane Long from Reading. Green, who is eager to leave West Ham,
is also on Newcastle United's radar but a move to The Hawthorns is likely to
appeal more to the England international. Albion have turned their attention
to Green after being priced out of a move for Ben Foster, the Birmingham
City goalkeeper. Long, who scored 25 goals for Reading last season, would
also stretch Albion's transfer budget, with the Championship club likely to
demand more than £8m for the 24-year-old striker.
Roy Hodgson, however, is keen to sign the Republic of Ireland international
and has registered his interest. Much now depends on whether Jeremy Peace,
the Albion chairman, will sanction a bid for the striker, who is also being
tracked by Everton, Newcastle and Sunderland

Switzerland - Day Two
WHUFC.com
Goalkeepers took centre-stage on the second day of the Hammers' pre-season
training camp
10.07.2011

Water polo, diving, cycling, indoor hockey, basketball, racquetball and - of
course - football were all on the agenda on the second day of West Ham
United's pre-season training camp. The first-team squad were up bright and
early on a beautiful morning in the canton of Bern in central Switzerland,
assembling at an Olympic-size swimming pool at 7am for a water polo
tournament. Following eight highly-competitive matches, Jack Collison
(pictured) made the biggest splash, combining with team-mate Scott Parker
before scoring both goals to lead his team to victory. Collison and Parker
were assisted by Jordan Brown, who swapped his usual left-back position for
that of goalkeeper and made some heroic saves. Following the water polo,
some of the players moved to a 3m diving board to show off their skills,
while others enjoyed a ride down a water flume. After breakfast, the players
and staff hopped on to mountain bikes for the two-mile ride to the training
complex. There, under the close guidance of manager Sam Allardyce, the squad
enjoyed an hour-long practice match that saw Junior Stanislas score and miss
a penalty - saved brilliantly by Ruud Boffin - as his team won 1-0. No
sooner had the squad cycled back to the hotel for lunch when the heavens
opened and torrential rain obscured the usually breath-taking views of the
surrounding mountains. After a bite to eat and a well-earned rest - although
some of the younger members of the squad suffered a shock tennis defeat by
the backroom staff - the players reconvened for their third and final
session of the day. This time it was Abdoulaye Faye who was the goalkeeping
hero, making a series of outstanding blocks to lead his team to a thrilling
penalty shootout victory following a competitive indoor hockey match. The
players then broke away for some smaller-sided games, with basketball and
racquetball among the disciplines enjoyed.

After such an action-packed day, the squad enjoyed a hearty dinner before
spending the evening relaxing ahead of Monday's Uhren Cup meeting with Swiss
Super League side BSC Young Boys in Grenchen. The official website will be
on hand with live text updates from the big match from around 4.30pm UK
time, while whufc.com and West Ham TV will have exclusive highlights and
reaction.

'Things have gone very well'

Head of sport medicine and sport science Andy Rolls is happy with
proceedings in Switzerland so far
10.07.2011

Head of sport medicine and sport science Andy Rolls has been delighted with
the squad's approach to their pre-season training camp in Switzerland. The
Hammers have been up early and working long and hard to get themselves in
shape for the 2011/12 npower Championship campaign. Rolls and his staff have
devised a productive and stimulating series of sessions, ranging from
keep-ball sessions to cycling to water polo. He told West Ham TV that, two
days into the trip, things were going to plan. "Things have gone very well,"
said Rolls. "The whole week has been fantastic. We sat down with Sam and
organised it from start to finish. I don't want to tempt fate but everyone
has got through with minimal problems so far. "There are always some
blisters at this time of year but you expect that because it's hot and the
ground is hard. "We've come out here and the weather has been ideal really.
It's not been too hot, although the sun has been out. The pitches are nice
and soft. It's gone really, really well."

On Saturday afternoon, the gym was a hive of activity as the squad split
into five groups to work on specific and focused parts of the body dependent
on their own individual needs. "We did a circuit for 20 minutes where we hit
all the exercises we wanted to do to strengthen the hamstrings, glutes and
anything else they need to strengthen to prevent injuries. We then split
into groups. "Myself and the staff looked at each player's individual record
and any problems that they've had and tried to see what we could do to
benefit each individual player," explained Rolls. "We split them into five
groups. The first was a lower-limb strength group, which was for players who
have had some knee problems or muscle injuries. "The second was a
flexibility group which was for players who were tight in certain areas we
found in our screening day last week. "The third was a metabolic circuit for
players to work on specific things, while the fourth was a core
stabilisation group for those who have had some groin problems. "Finally,
there was some specific groin rehab which was specific to that small group
of players."

The Hammers will take on Swiss Super League challengers BSC Young Boys in
the pre-season Uhren Cup tournament in Grenchen on Monday evening. Then, on
Wednesday, West Ham will face Swiss champions FC Basel. Before, during and
after those fixtures, Rolls said the players would be concentrating 100 per
cent on getting themselves ready for the fast-approaching season. "It's a
bit of everything in pre-season. We want to hit as many areas as we can and
look at the anaerobic side of things, because the aerobic will take care of
itself. "We have had pool sessions and football sessions, nice long breaks
after lunch for rest, massages and any treatment they needed, then we got
going again at 5pm. On Sunday, we did three sessions again at 7am, 10am and
5pm. This week is a training week."

Baggies enquire about Collison
West Brom keen on landing Hammers midfielder

Skysports.com understands that West Brom have made an enquiry over the
availability of West Ham United midfielder Jack Collison. The 22-year-old
Wales international midfielder is a man in demand following the Hammers'
relegation from the Premier League. Collison is currently contracted to the
Upton Park side until 2013, however, the club are in talks to extend his
deal. That has not stopped the interest from other clubs and West Bromhave
now approached West Ham to see if they will discuss a deal. The Hammers are
keen to trim their wage bill on the back of relegation and they may be
prepared to sell their rising star, although the Baggies could be knocked
back after co-owner David Gold recently stated that Collison was 'not for
sale'.

Scott Parker's exit from West Ham is set to be finalised this week as Aston

remains keen on leaving Upton Park as he looks to give himself the best
possible chance of staying in the England fold stay ahead of Euro 2012. The
former Chelsea man is in Switzerland with the rest of Sam Allardyce's squad

Fernandes wanted to bring Zola back to Upton Park if West Ham bid had
succeeded
Last updated at 12:01 AM on 11th July 2011
Daily Mail

Grand Prix team owner Tony Fernandes was going to consider bringing back
Gianfranco Zola as West Ham manager if his proposed takeover had succeeded.
Airline tycoon Fernandes, who runs Team Lotus, had told West Ham not to
appoint a manager while he was in negotiations to buy a controlling 51 per
cent stake. Instead Fernandes's offer was dismissed as derisory and Sam
Allardyce chosen as boss — decisions that alienated the Malaysian, a
lifelong Hammers fan. He called the Hammers high command of David Gold,
David Sullivan and Karren Brady 'not nice people to deal with to put it
mildly' and Allardyce 'a tragic selection'.

Fernandes said: 'West Ham is all about a style of football which you won't
get with Allardyce. And I just can't understand why Avram Grant was ever in
charge. Zola is far more suited to managing the club. 'There are not many
teams with West Ham's support and traditions. But the way I was treated by
Brady in particular has put me off football. I'm concentrating on my F1 team
now. I can build something here'. Unfortunately for Fernandes, both his
cars were out of the race after 10 laps at the British Grand Prix.

The first-team squad enjoyed an packed opening day their pre-season training
camp
09.07.2011

West Ham United kicked-off their pre-season training camp in Switzerland
with a busy and varied day of training on Saturday. The 26-strong first-team
squad were up early for a session in the swimming pool before heading off to
a nearby training complex for activation and an intensive hour-long football
session. After a break for lunch and an afternoon of well-earned rest, the
squad reassembled and returned to the training centre for another hour of
circuit training and specific strength and conditioning work. The likes of
Robert Green, Scott Parker, new boys Kevin Nolan and Abdoulaye Faye and
trialists Joey O'Brien and Hernani da Rosa were all put through their paces
by manager Sam Allardyce, assistant manager Neil McDonald and the backroom
staff. "Linking the staff and the integration of all the departments are
very important at this time of year - the medical, sport science and
football departments have created a very good working programme to encourage
the football and fitness of the players in the build up for the start of our
new season," said the manager. "We have had three very good sessions today
which we will review at the end of the evening. All the players appear to
have come through their sessions today and there are no injuries, which is
one of the most important things in our pre-season. "We are in a very
tranquil spot in the mountains of Switzerland. We're training at altitude
which is always good for the condition of the players. What little downtime
the players have, there are good facilities at the hotel, a fantastic lake,
outdoor swimming pool and a mini golf course where they can enjoy each
other's company. "This helps with the very important matter of team bonding
that is vital."

Stanislas staking his claim
WHUFC.com
Junior Stanislas has returned to fitness and is targeting a regular place in
Sam Allardyce's starting XI
09.07.2011

Junior Stanislas is approaching full fitness and targeting a regular
first-team place in the new season. Speaking from West Ham United's
pre-season training camp in Switzerland, the 21-year-old is eager to put a
year of injury and frustration behind him. Stanislas underwent hernia
surgery in January, ending his involvement in what had, to that point, been
an encouraging campaign for the versatile forward. Having returned to
reserve-team action in April, he told West Ham TV he is now ready to stake
his claim for a spot in Sam Allardyce's starting XI. "I'd say I'm 90 per
cent fit," he revealed. "I still get little niggles and stuff, but at the
moment it seems to be getting stronger and stronger every day, so it's all
good. "The last few seasons I've been in and out and last season I had my
injury problems, so this season I just want to play as many games as I can
and hopefully be a regular in the side."

A popular figure with Hammers supporters, Stanislas has netted important
goals in the past, most notably in the Carling Cup victory over Millwall in
August 2009.
With an npower Championship meeting with The Lions slated for 17 September,
the south London-born player is naturally keen to be fit and on form for
that fixture.
Bearing that in mind, Stanislas gave his all during Saturday's intensive
training session, where the outfield players took part in a series of
keep-ball exercises under the watchful eyes of Allardyce and assistant
manager Neil McDonald. "We got up very early this morning and had a little
pool session and stretch-off to loosen up, had a bit of breakfast and then
it was straight down to the training pitch," he added. "We got worked quite
hard but it's all good fitness work under the belt ready for the season.
"Obviously it's a lot more enjoyable [to use a ball in training] than doing
just straight running, but we did a lot of that before we left to come out
here, so we're still getting the fitness work done, but this time with a
ball. "Pre-season is about getting the work done for the beginning of the
season and all through the season. The harder you work, the easier fitness
will be when we're playing in the season."

West Ham United kicked-off their pre-season training camp in Switzerland in
bright sunshine. The Hammers arrived at their base near Bern late on Friday
evening before eating a welcome meal and heading for bed. The 26-man squad
rose early on Saturday morning for a group session in the swimming pool to
loosen up their joints and muscles. After a healthy breakfast the players
and staff, led by manager Sam Allardyce, boarded the team coach for the
short journey to the picturesque training complex. The whole squad,
including England trio Robert Green, Scott Parker and Carlton Cole, got
themselves up to with an activation session in the gymnasium before heading
outside on to the pristine pitches. There, under a warm sun and blue skies,
the players were put through their paces by Allardyce, assistant manager
Neil McDonald and members of the medicine and sport science department. The
Hammers will train at least twice a day throughout their stay in Switzerland
as the manager gets his players up to speed ahead of the start of the
2011/12 npower Championship campaign on 7 August. As part of his
preparations, Allardyce will send his players into action for the first time
at the Uhren Cup pre-season competition. West Ham will take on Swiss Super
League side BSC Young Boys in Grenchen on Monday evening before tackling
reigning Swiss champions FC Basel on Wednesday.

Big year for Brown
WHUFC.com
Jordan Brown is eager to make up for lost time and is hoping to impress Sam
Allardyce in pre-season
09.07.2011

Jordan Brown is fighting fit and ready for the biggest season of his career.
Still only 19, the Hammers left-back has put to paper on a new contract and
is eager to make up for lost time. Last season, Brown was on a roll and
looking set to stake a claim for the left-back berth only for disaster to
strike with a thigh injury in December. "I was doing well," Brown told West
Ham TV. "Just as I started to be doing well until Christmas and just as I
started to be involved with the first team, I got injured in a training
session and it just went on and on. "I never played again until the last
friendly of the season when I got the last half hour. I missed quite a bit
of it. Maybe it happened for a reason, you never know."

Brown is refusing to dwell on the disappointment of just seven reserve-team
appearances last season, nor the hurt of watching the club he has
represented since he was seven being relegated to the Championship. There is
a new start for all at Chadwell Heath and Brown wants 2011/12 to be a season
to remember - with the first step being travelling with the first-team squad
to Switzerland this weekend in the hope of competing with Herita Ilunga for
the left-back berth. "I am looking forward to it. It is a big thing for me
to sign again. It is another big step towards where I want to be and
hopefully I will make the most of it."

The youngster, who hails from Benfleet in south Essex, added: "It is going
to be a new start for everyone. The manager is not going to know us young
boys and we have to see who can get in. "For the younger players there will
be more games and the coaches will need more bodies I want to do as much as
I can in pre-season and get as many games as I can. "This season could be
the one. I told my family that this could be the biggest season I have ever
had, and I need to show what I can do. It can only take one game and you
have to take your chance when it comes."

Talking of families, Brown said he would not be contemplating the chance he
has now if it was not for their superb support. "I wouldn't have been able
to do it. I had to get to training every day before I was driving. To have
them around and be able to talk to them before and after games, it helps a
lot."

Tottenham implicated in phone records theft
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 10th July 2011
By: Staff Writer

The Olympic Park Legacy Company have called in Police to investigate claims
that its chief executive had his telephone records accessed by unauthorised
agents.
Last week West Ham United contacted the Police following claims in the
Sunday Times that the personal records of its employees had been
surreptitiously gained by corporate investigators acting on behalf of
Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham's rivals in the battle to win tenancy of the
£500million stadium post-2012 Olympic games.
And less than seven days later, the OPLC have confirmed that they too have
contacted the authorities after suspecting foul play. According to today's
edition of the Times, the OPLC called in police when they discovered that
records of phone calls made by chief executive Andrew Altman had been
acquired by unauthorised agents.
It is further reported that call records belonging to West Ham's vice-chair
Karren Brady were also accessed by the corporate sleuths, who had been
employed by Tottenham to covertly investigate both the OPLC voting committee
and employees of the club.

The revelation that Spurs have allowed themselves to become embroiled in a
row regarding the unlawful access of personal phone records could not have
come at a worse time for the north London club, following the national
outrage this week over the News of the World's phone-tapping confessions - a
scandal that led to the sudden demise of the 168-year-old newspaper.

In last week's edition the Sunday Times reported that the OPLC director at
the centre of the case, Dionne Knight, has been spied on at her home by
Tottenham's agents. Ms Knight lives with her 14-year-old daughter. Ms Knight
- and West Ham United's Olympic Director Ian Tompkins - were both suspended
from their respective organisations last week following the revelation that
she had been temporarily employed by West Ham as a consultant. The Times
report today that West Ham had been assured by Mr Tompkins that the OPLC had
authorised Ms Knight's employment; the OPLC dispute that version of events
and continue to insist that they were unaware Ms Knight had undertaken work
for the club.

Masters bid ends in defeat

West Ham United's vets went out of the London Masters at the first stage
tonight. Despite not losing a game, the unlucky Hammers failed to progress
to the final by virtue of goal difference. West Ham opened their campaign
with a 3-2 win over Chelsea that came courtesy of goals from Kevin Horlock,
Steve Lomas and a last-minute Ian Pearce winner. Chelsea were then beaten
4-3 by QPR in the next Group B fixture. That result meant that West Ham
needed to secure a win against reigning London Masters champions QPR in
order to progress to the final - and they were but one minute away from
doing just that. Despite falling 3-1 behind early doors (Gallen (2) and
Meaker for QPR, Matt Holland for West Ham) United rallied to pull the game
back to 3-3 through goals from John Moncur and Steve Lomas. With two minutes
of play remaining, captain Lomas put the Irons ahead for the first time in
the tie with a header - a goal that put West Ham top of the goup again.
However an equaliser for QPR - with little more than 60 seconds left on the
clock - earned Rangers a vital point, and one that saw them through to the
final on goals scored.

In Group A, unfancied Watford upset the odds to send Arsenal and Tottenham
packing. The final was won by the Hornets who beat QPR 3-2.

London Masters 2011: Results

Jack Collison has confirmed he is in discussions over a new deal at West Ham
after being linked with a move elsewhere this summer. Skysports.com revealed
late last month that Collison had entered into talks with the Championship
club regarding an extension. An agreement has yet to be struck and reports
suggest West Brom have now expressed an interest in signing the midfielder.
Collison is aware of the transfer talk but is staying focused on trying to
reach an accord with the Hammers. "It's flattering but I'm in negotiations
over a contract at the moment," he said in The Sun about the link to West
Brom. "Let's see how that goes."

Stoke in talks with duo
Potters keen to land West Ham striker and former Spurs defender

Chairman Peter Coates has revealed that Stoke City are in negotations with
Carlton Cole and Jonathan Woodgate about potential moves. West Ham striker
Cole has been linked with a move to The Potters since the Hammers'
relegation from the Premier League and it is understood that a deal for the
27-year-old could be completed for an initial fee of around £4.5 million.
Cole joined fellow England internationals Rob Green and Scott Parker as part
of Sam Allardyce's 26-man squad that travelled to Switzerland on Friday for
a six-day training camp.

Progress

Coates said: "Cole's a player the club is interested in and Tony Pulis has
liked him for a long time, we think he's a very good player. "It's not done
and dusted but it's work in progress. "He's a player the club is interested
in and Tony Pulis has liked him for a long time, we think he's a very good
player." Meanwhile, Coates has admitted free agent Woodgate could well be a
target for the club, with a view to a play-per-play deal. The former Real
Madrid and Tottenham defender's career has been plagued by injury. Coates
added: "We're working on that and it's something we're prepared to do. "It's
work in progress but we're taking a risk. We hope we'll be able to do
something."

Joe Cole will be handed the chance to revive his career in the Bundesliga
with Hamburg. The German club's new sporting director Frank Arnesen is keen

Tottenham and Fulham have all enquired about bringing Cole back to London
but cannot get close to his £90,000-a-week Liverpool wages.

Only "ridiculous" offers will tempt Leeds to sell
Published 23:00 09/07/11 By Mirror Football
The Mirror

Ken Bates has vowed it will take "ridiculous" money to prise top assets
Robert Snodgrass, Luciano Becchio and Max Gradel out of Leeds. Scotland's
Snodgrass has had an £8million price tag put on him to scare off Premier
Leaguers Norwich, West Brom and Stoke. Swansea are planning a £3m bid for
Argentine striker Becchio, while West Ham are primed to make a £2m offer for
Gradel. But Leeds chairman Bates said: "We have no intention of selling our
top players unless the offer is so ridiculous it will enable manager Simon
Grayson to strengthen his team in other ways."

Allardyce introduces triple pre-season sessions

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is cracking the whip with his players by
introducing TRIPLE sessions for the squad during pre-season. Allardyce is
determined to transform the club following their relegation and will come
down hard on his players as they look to bounce straight back into the top
flight. The former Bolton and Blackburn boss is renowned for his strict
discipline but none of the first-team squad were prepared for the three
sessions a day when they jetted back from their holidays last week.
Allardyce wants his players in prime condition when the new season gets
underway on August 6.

West Ham set to sign Iceland striker

West Ham are poised to sign Eidur Gudjohnsen on a free transfer following
his exit from Fulham. The 32-year-old Iceland striker had a one-year
contract offer rescinded following Mark Hughes's departure from Craven
Cottage. Swansea tried to take Gudjohnsen to the Liberty Stadium and the
former Barcelona and Chelsea star was on the verge of agreeing terms until
the Hammers intervened. Manager Sam Allardyce, who worked with Gudjohnsen
at Bolton, switched his attention after hitting problems trying to secure
Stoke's Glenn Whelan in the deal that will see Carlton Cole join Stoke.

Cole's Stoke move hits a snag
ESPNsoccernet staff
July 9, 2011

Carlton Cole's transfer to Stoke still looks a long way off after he flew
out to Switzerland with the rest of the West Ham squad for a six-day
training camp.
Widespread reports on Saturday suggested England striker Cole was on the
verge of a £4.5 million move to the Potters, with the fee potentially rising
to £6 million depending on performances. Stoke are thought to have already
had one bid rejected for Cole, who looks set to follow Demba Ba out of the
Upton Park exit door following the club's relegation from the Premier
League. Tony Pulis is also thought to be interested in Birmingham striker
Cameron Jerome as he looks to bolster Stoke's striking power ahead of the
new season. Cole's fellow England internationals Scott Parker and Robert
Green, targets for Aston Villa and West Brom respectively, also made the
trip to Switzerland.

West Ham's Allardyce blames Thatcher for UK soccer's decline
By Mike Collett
14:53 BST, Sat 9 Jul 2011

LONDON, July 9 Reuters - West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has blamed
former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for "killing football" and
creating a modern-day generation of unfit, obese children in the United
Kingdom. Allardyce says that all UK sports, not just soccer, are suffering
because of policies adopted by Thatcher's Conservative governments
throughout the 1980s. In a scathing attack in The Sun newspaper on Saturday,
Allardyce said: "Since Margaret Thatcher stopped teachers being paid extra
money for coaching sports after school, all sporting activities have
diminished on a competitive basis. "Kids are now more obese and unfit than
ever. All the prime young athletes we were ready to develop just aren't
there, so we get a lesser quality of player. "It has not just undermined our
game, it has undermined many sports in this country and created an unhealthy
child. Thatcher killed football, there is no doubt about it."

A recent report stated that one in three children in Britain are obese or
overweight and that 32 per cent of children play less than an hour of sport
a week. In the last 20 years, around 5,000 school playing fields have been
sold off or built over as England's men's national team have continually
floundered in attempts to repeat their 1966 World Cup triumph.

Allardyce, a keen student of sporting education, continued: "Look at how
little kids do to what I did. I was a 200 metres runner, a 4x400m relay
runner and a triple jumper. "I was a batsman in cricket, a freestyler in
swimming and swam for the town. I did the pommel horse in gymnastics and I
was really good on the trampoline, as well as being a footballer. "Kids
don't do any of that now. All of that sporting activity allowed me to play
in the top division in this country."

Allardyce, who recently took over at English second division side West Ham,
maintains the consequences of Thatcher's policies now mean clubs are having
to sign up children at increasingly young ages to ensure they have
opportunities to flourish. "This was a working-class game but it's only at
private schools where the children get the sports opportunities I had -- and
even then a lot of them don't play football, it's mainly rugby," said the
ex-Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers boss. "Despite putting in place all
sorts of advanced academy systems at clubs we are only producing half the
players the school system used to."

The Football Association estimates it takes 10,000 hours of training and
education from the age of about seven or eight to be able to be good enough
to play professional football -- accepting a child has the talent to begin
with. Allardyce added: "Even a club like Manchester United can only provide
4,000 hours at the moment. It's hard to do more because parents have to
drive their kids there four nights a week as well as on a Sunday. "Until we
wake up and realise how important school sport is to our kids we will never
repair the damage," he concluded.
