West Ham United statement
WHUFC.com
Andrew Bernhardt has spoken positively about the future after his first week
with West Ham United
12.06.2009

West Ham United's Non-Executive Chairman Andrew Bernhardt is looking forward
to the challenges that lie ahead and believes the club can build on last
season's successes. "I have been so impressed with what has been achieved
here in the last 12 months with a proper strategy that everyone has bought
into. Gianfranco Zola has not even been at the club a year, yet he has put
his indelible mark on a young, skilful, vibrant team. "The club has a buzz
about it, from the people you meet at reception to those involved in the
first team. I have complete faith in how CEO Scott Duxbury and Gianfranco
work together in improving the squad without external investment. "Scott's
self-sufficient business model is sensible and prudent in theses challenging
times and will deliver success. I am confident there are strong foundations
we can all build on."
He dismissed reports that West Ham would be forced to sell players to
balance the books. "That is absolutely untrue. No business likes to have
debts, but with a £100m turnover, increased TV revenues and a focused
commercial operation, the club is on sound financial footing. "The wage bill
has been reduced and the settlement agreed with Sheffield United is budgeted
for. "I can assure fans that Gianfranco absolutely does not have to sell any
players for financial reasons and new players will be arriving in the summer
to augment what is already a strong playing staff. "We totally support his
philosophy of following the West Ham tradition of bringing young players
through, as well as investing in new talent where appropriate. "But we also
believe the club should not spend more than it earns and thus increase the
debt. It simply isn't necessary when you have such a talented management
team and pool of up-and-coming young players. It seems pointless to invest
in West Ham United's world famous academy if you are then not going to use
the players you have nurtured and developed."

Mr. Bernhardt said Straumur Bank - the majority shareholder in CB Holdings
who took control of the club this week - is going through a restructuring
process following the recent global financial downturn. "Our creditors and
the Icelandic Financial Services Authority are fully aware of our plans and
are completely supportive. But that situation will take a few months to
resolve and will not impact on West Ham United."

Spence taking a break
WHUFC.com
After a hectic season for club and country, Jordan Spence can relax - for a
month at least
13.06.2009

Jordan Spence is enjoying a well-earned rest but has already got one eye on
the 2009 European Under-19 Championship in Ukraine this July.

The West Ham United defender captained the Young Lions during their
successful qualifying campaign to reach the eight-nation finals. England
have been drawn against the host nation, Switzerland and Slovenia after
Friday night's draw. The finals get under way on 21 July, with the top two
teams from the group progressing to the semi-finals to be played in Donetsk
and Mariupol on 30 July. The final will be played in Donetsk on 2 August.

Spence's international involvement this summer after a successful loan at
Leyton Orient has meant a shortened break but he intends to switch off from
football - for a little while at least - before coming back with the aim of
making his West Ham United breakthrough in 2009/10. "I've only really got a
month off, which is slightly shorter than some of the other boys but I'll
make the most of it and I'll take my time out to relax," he told whufc.com.

"I'm going out to Florida with friends and I'll be out there for about three
weeks, but just like any other time football won't be too far from my mind.
I've already packed my ball as I know that will come out on the beach. I
might even try a few keep ups. I just want to relax and rest my body as it's
been a busy end to the season."

The 19-year-old Academy product is also already tuned into good habits. "I'm
quite blessed in a sense that I generally eat well but I can't seem to put
weight on. I've been assured that will change once I get a bit older but I
will be looking after myself and keep everything ticking over. When it comes
to nearer the start of pre-season, I'll be getting my getting myself to a
good level of fitness as I want to hit the ground running."

Green on WHUTV
WHUFC.com
The WHUTV cameras were at Wembley to catch up with England's No1 Robert
Green
11.06.2009

Robert Green may not have had the busiest of evenings against Andorra but
that certainly did not detract from the pride at making his home debut for
England.

Green was virtually a spectator as England's attackers put the Andorrans to
the sword, hitting six goals without reply. It was the West Ham No1's second
start in the space of five days for his country after another clean sheet
against Kazakhstan in Almaty on Saturday.

"It's a proud moment coming out and singing the national anthem," Green
said. "It was a bit of a strange one on Saturday in Kazakhstan, but that's
what international football is about. To be at Wembley and play was a really
special moment.

"We knew what the game was going to be like. We knew what was going to
happen when we came into it and it was just a case of working the chances,
and when they came along, taking them, and we did that comprehensively."

Such was England's superiority that Green did not touch the ball until the
26th minute and then his every touch for the rest of the game was cheered by
the home supporters. The 29-year-old admitted he was slightly worried he may
not touch the ball at all!

"Yes I was aware, maybe at Upton Park it would have been a bit more relaxed
and I would have acknowledged it but on my full debut at Wembley it's one to
play down a bit.

"I was counting the minutes as well don't worry. After about 20 minutes I
thought I could have been the only keeper to have made his full debut at
Wembley and never touch the ball but thankfully that didn't happen."

One of the hardest tests for Green would have been keeping his concentration
with such large gaps between his involvements in the match. But he
demonstrated that he was 100 per cent focused when he was called into action
for midway through the second half.

"I just knew that something somewhere down the line was going to happen and
it did. So in that respect I was there when I was needed and that's
international football. In that respect it was a job done by everyone in the
team.

"I was not at all frustrated at not having to do more. Two clean sheets is
two clean sheets and I'm happy with that."

Summer schedule takes shape
WHUFC.com
The pre-season programme is nearing completion as Gianfranco Zola looks to
the 2009/10 campaign
12.06.2009

A busy summer is fast taking shape for West Ham United with a month to go
until the first fixture of the 2009/10 pre-season.

Gianfranco Zola will take a strong squad to south Essex to take on Grays
Athletic in the opening fixture on Sunday 12 July. Although he may be
without some of his internationals due to the extra time being given for
some to return to Chadwell Heath, it could be a welcome chance to see some
of the manager's fit-again players in action while any new faces at the club
may also figure for the first time.

It is the only match the first team are playing in England before a training
camp, featuring games, in Austria and then a high-profile trip to China to
take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy. A derby against Tottenham Hotspur is
guaranteed on Wednesday 29 July - the first of two televised matches the
Hammers will play in Beijing's Workers Stadium.

With the 2009/10 Barclays Premier League fixtures being confirmed first and
fastest by the club's official text alert service next Wednesday morning and
then on whufc.com, the final warm-up game will be the visit of Zola's former
club SSC Napoli on Saturday 8 August. Played for the Bobby Moore Cup, the
match is the final chance to see the players before it all gets under way a
week later.

Gabbs to tie the knot
WHUFC.com
Danny Gabbidon will get married this Saturday, with team-mate James Collins
acting as best man

Danny Gabbidon's friendship with West Ham United team-mate James Collins
will be put to the test this weekend. That is because Collins will be best
man at Gabbidon's wedding on Saturday afternoon. The pair have been close
since Gabbidon joined his fellow Wales international at Cardiff City in
August 2000. After forging a strong partnership at the heart of the
Bluebirds' rearguard, the duo joined West Ham in a combined £3m deal in July
2005.
Gabbidon fulfilled the best man role for his fellow central defender last
summer, and the groom-to-be admitted to being more nervous about the
contents of his old pal's speech than the prospect of tying the knot. "I'm
not nervous at the moment but it's getting close so there's a few
butterflies coming," said the 29-year-old, who has recently returned to
action after 18 months out with a series of injuries. "I think I will be
just before but at the moment I'm pretty cool. I'm looking forward to it.
It's going to be a good day. "James is going to be my best man. I thought
I'd get him back because he got married last year and I was his best man. I
told him in my speech that I'd get revenge on him the year after so I
thought this was a good time to do it. "My speech was pretty conservative.
There are a few things I could have used but I daren't because he would have
probably ended up getting divorced before he was even married, so I kept it
quite civil! Hopefully he'll do the same for me. "He has got a couple of
different things. My brother is best man as well so I think they've been
talking and swapping ideas so I think I might be in for a bit of trouble!
Hopefully he won't have too many drinks and it'll all go smoothly."

Hammers plan Inter raid
Chilean Jimenez a target for Nani and Zola
Last updated: 14th June 2009

West Ham United have confirmed Inter Milan midfielder Luis Jimenez is one of
the club's primary transfer targets over the summer. Hammers technical
director Gianluca Nani, who oversees transfer policy at Upton Park, admits
Chile international Jimenez is in his thoughts. The 24-year-old has
long-since been linked with a switch to the Hammers and Nani, who moved to
East London from Brescia last year, is of the opinion the player could be a
good acquisition to Gianfranco Zola's squad. "We have a coach who likes to
play football on the ground and Jimenez is a great player," Nani told FC
Inter News. "He is currently an Inter player, but we still have two months
left in the market. "I like him very much - I wanted him to come to Brescia
years ago."

Hammers have Bernhardt buzzing
Bright future predicted at Upton Park
By Chris Burton Last updated: 12th June 2009
SSN

West Ham have made a positive first impression on their new non-executive
chairman Andrew Bernhardt. The Hammers have been hit hard by the ongoing
global recession, with their Icelandic owners seeing their assets decimated.
However, a positive 2008/09 campaign on the field has been accompanied by
ambitious plans off it.
The club have rediscovered financial stability and Bernhardt, who has been
appointed to help maintain that progress, believes the club can be proud of
their achievements in the face of adversity. "I have been so impressed with
what has been achieved here in the last 12 months with a proper strategy
that everyone has bought into," he told the club's official website.
"Gianfranco Zola has not even been at the club a year, yet he has put his
indelible mark on a young, skilful, vibrant team. "The club has a buzz about
it, from the people you meet at reception to those involved in the
first-team. I have complete faith in how CEO Scott Duxbury and Gianfranco
work together in improving the squad without external investment. "Scott's
self-sufficient business model is sensible and prudent in these challenging
times and will deliver success. I am confident there are strong foundations
we can all build on."
Meanwhile, Bernhardt has dismissed suggestions that the Hammers will be
forced to sell this summer in order to balance the books. "That is
absolutely untrue," he added.
"No business likes to have debts, but with a £100m turnover, increased TV
revenues and a focused commercial operation, the club is on sound financial
footing. "The wage bill has been reduced and the settlement agreed with
Sheffield United (regarding the Carlos Tevez affair) is budgeted for. "I can
assure fans that Gianfranco absolutely does not have to sell any players for
financial reasons and new players will be arriving in the summer to augment
what is already a strong playing staff. "We totally support his philosophy
of following the West Ham tradition of bringing young players through, as
well as investing in new talent where appropriate. "But we also believe the
club should not spend more than it earns and thus increase the debt. It
simply isn't necessary when you have a talented management team and a pool
of up-and-coming young players.
"It seems pointless to invest in West Ham United's world famous academy if
you are then not going to use the players you have nurtured and developed."

MICHAEL OWEN FOR SALE
Newcastle striker sends clubs brochure about HIMSELF
News Of The World
By ROB BEASLEY, 13/06/2009

MICHAEL OWEN has sent a glossy 34- page brochure about HIMSELF to eight
Premier League clubs in a desperate attempt to find a new team for next
season. It is believed to be the first time in Premier League history that a
player has produced his own prospectus to prompt a transfer. The one-time
golden boy of English football and former European Footballer of the Year
has been reduced to hawking himself around after suffering the ignominy of
relegation with Newcastle. The brochure - circulated by Owen's management
company Wasserman Media Group - has been sent to eight top-flight clubs,
including Aston Villa, Everton, Portsmouth and West Ham. In it, WMG boast
about the benefits of signing the ex-England striker, his clean-cut image,
commercial value and goalscoring prowess and include a medical report. The
brochure rivals any produced by top-end estate agents to advertise
multi-million mansions. Just imagine, folks - For Sale: A magnificent,
luxury two-legged footballer, set on a picturesque plot in the North East of
England. Backs on to racecourse (at every opportunity). High maintenance,
but must be seen to be appreciated. £80,000 per week, or nearest offer,
subject to contract. But WMG have dropped a brick in trying to allay fears
about the 29-year-old's injury-prone record. The sales details state Owen,
who signed for Newcastle in a £16m move from Real Madrid four years ago, has
appeared in 77 per cent of the Toon's games in the last two years. But
that's a bit of a sales clanger considering Mike Ashley's Magpies have
suffered the shame of dropping out of the Premier League despite Owen's
involvement. Sam Rush, WMG's chief operating officer, explained the
brochure, saying: "Although there's been interest from abroad, Michael told
us he'd prefer to stay in the Prem. "So after the season ended, we prepared
a document showing all the information an interested club would require and
this was circulated to a select group. "We have provided a complete analysis
of every Newcastle first-team game in the previous two years, knowing that
Michael had appeared in 77 per cent of them. "We also included a medical
report and answers to frequently-asked questions, as well as a review of his
commercial benefits and international name awareness. "Our aim is to ensure
Michael secures the most appropriate career move before the end of the
transfer window."
Owen's current four-year £105,000-a-week Toon deal ends at the end of this
month, so he would be available to any prospective buyer on a free. Everton,
Villa, Tottenham and Manchester City are the leading contenders ready to
offer Owen a fresh start. But he has been dogged by hamstring and groin
problems since he left Liverpool five years ago and has started just 58
league matches for Newcastle. He was ruled out for five months after
breaking his metatarsal in December 2005; then in June 2006 he tore his
anterior cruciate ligament in the World Cup and his knee was rebuilt by
world-famous surgeon Dr Richard Steadman. Horse-lover Owen makes no secret
of the fact he wants to become a trainer and owner at his Cheshire stables
when he hangs up his boots.

HAMMERS CHASE DANIEL STURRIDGE
Teenage hitman on way out of Manchester City
News Of The World
By ROB SHEPHERD, 13/06/2009

WEST HAM want Manchester City's Daniel Sturridge - but face losing Matthew
Upson to Mark Hughes' side. The highly-rated teenage striker is on his way
from City after wage demands believed to be in excess of £50,000 a week.
Chelsea were favourites to land the England Under-21 hitman but Sturridge,
19, fears a lack of starting opportunities with Blues. Yet it is understood
he is keen on playing under Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola. turridge is a free
agent but, under Premier League rules protecting clubs who lose Academy
graduates, City can claim compensation. Should that be close to the
£10million boss Hughes feels they deserve, that could rule out the Hammers.
But West Ham are confident of clinching the signing of Inter Milan's
attacking midfield Luis Jiminez for around £3.5m. Club officials met with
the FA on Friday to lobby for a 'special case' work permit for the Chilean.
But Zola will have to sell to finance significant signings. And it looks as
though England defender Upson will be tempted by City - though he is still
waiting to see if Arsenal come in for him. But keeper Robert Green is ready
to stay at the club, saying: "I have a good rapport with the fans and I love
playing for the manager."

to commit himself to the club further, Green has moved to assure Hammers

playing there in front of the fans. "My contract is long enough not to worry

West Ham are leading the chase for Italian under-21 hot-shot Robert
Acquafresca. The 21-year-old Inter Milan forward is rated as one of the
hottest properties in Serie A and hit 14 goals in 36 games during a
season-long loan spell at Cagliari. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola knows all
about Acquafresca's talent from his time coaching the Italy Under-21 side
and his links with former club Cagliari. West Ham scouts will be in Sweden
for the European Under-21 Championships this week with Acquafresca set to
start in Italy's opening game against Serbia on Tuesday. With his first-team
opportunities likely to be limited at Inter next season, Acquafresca is keen
to make a move to secure regular action. And Zola is hoping to tie up a deal
for the striker over the summer as he looks solve his side's problems in

Interest hots up in Hammers winger
TeamTalk

West Ham winger Kyel Reid is reportedly being targeted by a number of clubs
after he was released by the Upton Park club. Reid is available on a free
transfer after his previous deal expired at the end of last season. The
21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Wolves, where he
scored the goal that sealed promotion for the Championship title winners.
Mick McCarthy is believed to be among a host of managers monitoring the
21-year-old's situation. Birmingham, Burnley, Middlesbrough, West Brom and
Newcastle are all also credited with an interest. Reid signed professional
terms with the Hammers in 2005 but has made only three first team
appearances. He has had loan spells at Barnsley, Crystal Palace, Blackpool
and most recently at Molineux.

Owen brochure sent to Prem clubs
TeamTalk

Michael Owen's management company have compiled a brochure on the striker in
a bid to win him a move back to the Premier League. Wasserman Media Group
has sent the document, which highlights the strengths of the former
Liverpool man over a reported 34 pages, to a select group of top-flight
clubs, with Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Everton and West Ham among the clubs to
have received a copy. Owen has struggled with injury since joining
Newcastle from Real Madrid in 2005 and has fallen out of the England frame.
The 29-year-old is out of contract this summer and, following Newcastle's
relegation from the Premier League, is looking for a transfer to revive his
flagging career. Sam Rush, chief operating officer of WMG, told Sunday
Mirror Sport: "As one of the world's leading sports agencies, Wasserman
regularly utilise comprehensive documentation and audio-visual material to
illustrate the benefits of our clients. "Although there has been interest
from abroad, Michael has told us that he would prefer to stay in the Premier
League. "In the week after the season ended, we prepared a document showing
all the information an interested club would require and this was circulated
to a select group. "We also included a medical report and answers to
frequently asked questions as well as a review of his commercial benefits
and international name awareness."

West Ham Join Chase For Manchester City's Daniel Sturridge - Report
The Hammers appear keen to add City's hot prospect to the ranks at Upton
Park...
14 Jun 2009 10:03:34
Goal.com

West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City's
teenage striker Daniel Sturridge. The News of the World claims that
Gianfranco Zola's men have joined Chelsea in the hunt for the forward, who
looks set to quit Eastlands after the club baulked at his wage demands.
Whilst Chelsea had looked favourites to sign the 19-year-old, the report
claims that Sturridge is concerned that he will spend more time on the bench
than on the pitch in west London and may turn down the chance to join the
Blues. This could, then, pave the way for the Hammers to sign the striker,
who is thought to be keen to play for boss Zola. Whilst finance remains an
issue at Upton Park, the club have insisted Zola will have money to spend
this summer. Whilst Sturridge is a free agent, reports have claimed that
City may be entitled to compensation should he leave, in the form of a
"development fee" as he is an academy graduate – and that figure is thought
to be in the region of £10 million. The England U21 international made 16
appearances for City last season, scoring four times, but is widely viewed
as one of the hottest striking properties in English football.

West Ham will not have to sell to survive - new chairman
10:52am Saturday 13th June 2009
Echo

WEST Ham will not have to sell players to balance the books, the club's new
chairman has claimed. New owners took over the Hammers on Monday to stop the
club from going bust. Speaking almost a week after the takeover, the Irons
new non-executive chairman Andrew Bernhardt dismissed reports that the club
will have to sell to survive.
He said: "That is absolutely untrue. No business likes to have debts, but
with a £100m turnover, increased TV revenues and a focussed commercial
operation, the club is on a sound financial footing. "The wage bill has been
reduced and the settlement with Sheffield United budgeted for. "I can assure
fans that Gianfranco absolutely does not have to sell any players for
financial reasons and new players will be arriving in the summer to augment
what is already a strong playing staff."
On Monday, control of West Ham transferred to a consortium of firms owed
money by Hansa, the previous owner of the Upton Park outfit. It has told
fans it wants to sell the club as quickly as possible in order to recoup
some of the cash it is owed by Hansa. The consortium is called CB Holdings
and it takes the place of the now defunct Hansa. The takeover meant that
chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson and vice-chairman Asgeir Fridgeirsson have
been booted out. New owner CB Holdings is 70 per cent owned by Icelandic
bank Straumur. The bank was itself bailed out by the Icelandic government in
March, when it collapsed under the weight of bad debt it acquired during the
credit bubble. It was the last of the country's four major banks to collapse
during the credit crunch. In October last year, the country of Iceland
itself was declared effectively bust too. The deal means that Icelandic
taxpayers today part own West Ham. But Mr Berndhardt is optimistic about
West Ham's future. "The club has a buzz about it, from the people you meet
in reception to those involved in the first team.I have complete faith in
how CEO Scott Duxbury and Gianfranco work together in improving the squad
without external investment. "Scott's self-sufficient business model is
sensible and prudent in these challenging times and will deliver success. I
am confident there are strong foundations we can all build on," he said.
