Cup joy for Eyjolfsson
WHUFC.com
Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson helped KSV Roeselare into the Belgian Cup semi-finals
on Wednesday evening
27.01.2010

Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson's tremendous start to his loan spell in Belgium
continued as KSV Roeselare took a giant step towards the first Belgian Cup
final appearance in their 89-year history. The Iceland Under-21 defender,
who joined Roeselare on loan until the end of the season earlier this month,
played the 90 minutes as Dennis van Wijk's team overcame KV Kortrijk on away
goals to reach the semi-finals. Going into Wednesday's quarter-final
second-leg tie 3-2 down, Roeselare levelled matters through Joeri Dequevy's
goal eight minutes from time at the Schiervelde Stadion. The White and
Blacks were then able to play out the remaining time to clinch victory
courtesy of their two away first-leg goals.
Before Dequevy's all-important goal, Eyjolfsson had to be at his best to
deny Kortrijk's Laurent Ciman early in the second half. The match capped a
fine first fortnight for the youngster as he makes his name in Belgian
football. He said: "Everything has gone well so quickly. I have only been
here a couple of weeks and we have already had some great wins - including
now being through to the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup. I could hardly have
dreamed of a better start."
Roeselare will face one of Cercle Brugge KSV, AA Gent or KV Mechelen in the
last four. Away from the cup, the 19-year-old had previously performed well
in the club's vital 4-1 Belgian top-flight win over relegation rivals KSC
Lokeren at the weekend. Eyjolfsson, who was booked in Wednesday's cup
success, will return to action with Roeselare when they play host to KRC
Genk - the team they knocked out at the last-16 stage - in the league on
Saturday evening. There is no question of not staying grounded though for
the Hammers youngster. "We cannot get carried away," he added. "We have
another extremely important match coming on Saturday."
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Academy striker Jack Werndly was an unused
substitute for Histon in their 2-0 home Blue Square Premier defeat by Luton
Town. On Tuesday, Andrea Zola, the manager's son, made his debut for Blue
Square Premier side Grays Athletic. Unfortunately for Zola and his manager,
former West Ham left-back Julian Dicks, Grays went down to a 4-1 defeat at
Kidderminster Harriers.

Sulli hexes Harry

David Sullivan has hit out at Tottenham for attempting to hijack the deal to
bring Eidur Gudjohnsen to the Boleyn. It was revealed earllier today that
Harry Redknapp - who had insisted just days before that he had no intention
of signing any players during the current transfer window - had made an
eleventh-hour bid to take the Icelandic striker to White Hart Lane. That
attempt to steal Gudjohnsen from under his nose clearly infuriated Sullivan,
who said this lunchtime: "We thought we had a deal; we'd even done the
medical. Then I heard Tottenham were trying to speak to the player. "I can't
say I'm happy about it but I believe in karma. What goes around comes
around."
Although there is no news on how those talks went it is thought that Spurs
are now in the driving seat to land the former Chelsea and Barca striker,
who has failed to settle in France

Hammers eye Spurs duo
Zola keen on Bentley and Hutton
Last updated: 28th January 2010

Skysports.com understands West Ham are lining up a double swoop for
Tottenham duo David Bentley and Alan Hutton. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola is
keen to bolster his squad before the close of the transfer window and he is
weighing up deals for the Spurs pair. Bentley, who scored a goal in a rare
appearance in Tuesday's win over Fulham, has failed to hold down a regular
place in the Spurs side this season with Aaron Lennon keeping him on the
sidelines. The former Arsenal man is believed to be keen on a move away from
White Hart Lane in search of regular first-team football and West Ham are
ready to offer him the chance to move to Upton Park. West Ham are also
hoping to lure Bentley's team-mate Hutton to West London with Zola in the
market for a new right-back. Hutton has been linked with a switch away from
North London after failing to hold down a consistent spot in Harry
Redknapp's side. The Scotland international could be tempted to move on in
search of regular action as he looks to safeguard his place in the national
team. It remains to be seen if Redknapp would be willing to let the pair
move on as he battles to guide Spurs to a top four finish this season.

Hammers fume at Spurs move
Sullivan unhappy with approach for Gudjohnsen
By James Riach Last updated: 27th January 2010

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has hit out at Tottenham over their pursuit
of Eidur Gudjohnsen. The East London club are in the hunt for the Iceland
striker but despite the 31-year-old having completed a medical at Upton Park
he may opt to join Spurs on loan from Monaco instead. This is not the first
time there has been bad blood between the two clubs regarding transfers.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp tried to sign Craig Bellamy a year ago from
the Hammers but chief executive Scott Duxbury vowed never to sell players to
the club's 'local rivals', and the Welshman moved to Manchester City.
Sullivan and fellow co-owner David Gold have admitted their desire to
strengthen their strikeforce, and are expected to complete a deal for
Blackburn's Benni McCarthy in the coming days. However, Sullivan has been
left fuming over Spurs' attempt to pinch Gudjohnsen from under their nose.
"We thought we had a deal and the player had even had a medical," he said.
"We then heard that Tottenham were trying to speak to the player. "I can't
say I am happy about it but I believe in Karma and what goes around, comes
around."
Spurs already have four strikers in Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Robbie
Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko, but the future of the latter remains in doubt.
Redknapp confirmed his interest in Gudjohnsen immediately after the 2-0 win
over Fulham on Tuesday evening.

It's a Gud deal for Redknapp
The Sun
By ANDREW DILLON
Published: Today

SPURS boss Harry Redknapp has snapped up Eidur Gudjohnsen. Striker
Gudjohnsen, 31, has agreed a loan deal until the end of the season subject
to a medical this morning.
Tottenham will pay £30,000 a week with Iceland hitman Gudjohnsen's club
Monaco making up the rest. The former Chelsea star has snubbed West Ham to
join Spurs. Choice Redknapp revealed: "We've been talking about him for
nearly two weeks and when we heard West Ham were interested we made our
move. "We are not paying a penny more than West Ham were offering him. "Two
identical deals were on the table. In the end it was a straight choice for
Eidur." New Hammers co-owner David Sullivan rapped: "We thought we had a
deal and the player had even had a medical. I can't say I am happy about
it."

West Ham close in on McCarthy deal
Published 17:37 27/01/10 By John Cross
The Mirror

West Ham are confident of completing a deal for Blackburn striker Benni
McCarthy. The Blackburn striker will move to Upton Park on loan with a view
to a permanent £1.5m move in the summer, which is designed to overcome work
permit problems. The Hammer also want Manchester City striker Benjani after
yesterday moving on on-loan Luis Jimenez. He returned to Inter Milan - and
will be immediately farmed out to Parma. That is designed to clear the wage
bill to allow West Ham to pursue their interest in Tottenham's out-of-favour
David Bentley, if they can persuade Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to loan out
the £15m midfielder with a view to a permanent move in the summer

Spurs swoop to sign Gudjohnsen ahead of Hammers
By Soccernet staff
January 28, 2010

Tottenham appear to have made a sensational last-minute swoop to sign Eidur
Gudjonhson on loan from under West Ham's noses after Spurs boss Harry
Redknapp claimed the striker has chosen to join his side even after
completing a medical with their Premier League rivals. Struggling West Ham
were keen to bolster their striking ranks by bringing in former Chelsea man
Gudjohnsen on loan from Monaco, but the player himself has opted instead for
high-flying Tottenham when presented with an identical deal, Redknapp said.
"We've been talking about him for nearly two weeks and when we heard West
Ham were interested we made our move," Redknapp was quoted by the Sun as
saying. "We are not paying a penny more than West Ham were offering him. Two
identical deals were on the table. In the end it was a straight choice for
Eidur.''
Gudjohnsen is now set to undergo a second medical in London this week, this
time with Tottenham, who he will join until the end of the season. New West
Ham co-owner David Sullivan reacted angrily on Wednesday to Spurs making a
move to sign Gudjohnsen. Sullivan said: "We thought we had a deal and the
player had even had a medical. We then heard that Tottenham were trying to
speak to the player. I can't say I am happy about it but I believe in Karma
and what goes around, comes around.''

Tottenham set to sign Eidur Gudjohnsen despite West Ham interest
West Ham United are in danger of missing out on two of their striker targets
as Eidur Gudjohnsen closed in on a move to Tottenham Hotspur and Benjani
Mwaruwari was considering a switch to Blackburn Rovers.

Eidur Gudjohnsen is poised for a return to the Premier League with either
Tottenham or West Ham United . The irony for West Ham is that Benjani, who
had thought he was joining them last week, has been lined up as a
replacement at Ewood Park for Benni McCarthy, who moved to Upton Park in a
£2.5 million deal. At one stage West Ham were due to unveil Benjani on
Monday, so that he could face his former club Portsmouth on Tuesday. However
the deal was put on hold by West Ham as they stepped up their interest in
Gudjohnsen. The danger now is that they lose both players.

Gudjohnsen underwent the first part of his medical on Tuesday after West Ham
agreed a loan deal with his club Monaco, which involved covering his
£50,000-a-week (after tax) wages until the end of the season. The 31
year-old, however, then held talks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and
the Icelander is now expected to complete a move to White Hart Lane, subject
to a medical. Despite their failure to contact Gudjohnsen or his father,
Arnor, on Wednesday West Ham had not given up hope on the deal even though
their pursuit of the Icelander has put in jeopardy any hopes of signing
Benjani.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was willing to agree a move last
week but then, when West Ham failed to complete, it allowed Blackburn to
step in with Sam Allardyce regarding the Zimbabwean as a replacement for
McCarthy. Blackburn had also considered a move for Gudjohnsen but balked at
his wages. Last week both Spurs and West Ham attempted to sign Ruud van
Nistelrooy with Sullivan going public with his willingness to pay the Dutch
striker £100,000 a week. However both clubs missed out as the 33 year-old
joined Hamburg from Real Madrid instead. Also on West Ham's list is Stoke
City's James Beattie while there is also understood to have been an inquiry
for Tottenham's Roman Pavlyuchenko.

West Ham United close to losing Eidur Gudjohnsen to Tottenham Hotspur
Icelander set to join Spurs on loan
Mwaruwari in talks with Blackburn
Dominic Fifield guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 27 January 2010 22.43 GMT

West Ham United United fear they could miss out on two of the strikers they
are attempting to sign. Eidur Gudjohnsen will seal a loan move to Tottenham
Hotspur today subject to a medical and Manchester City's Benjani Mwaruwari
has opened talks with Blackburn Rovers.

Gudjohnsen's negotiations with West Ham had progressed as far as his
undergoing a medical at the Boleyn Ground yesterday while the Londoners were
playing at Portsmouth. But interest was registered by the Spurs manager,
Harry Redknapp, too, with the 31-year-old's agent and Gudjohnsen, who is
currently with Monaco, has been persuaded that the pursuit of a Champions
League place suits his ambitions better than a relegation struggle.

The Icelander will move to White Hart Lane until the end of the season, to
the disappointment of West Ham's new co-owner, David Sullivan. "We thought
we had a deal and the player had even had a medical," he said. "We then
heard that Tottenham were trying to speak to the player. I can't say I am
happy about it but I believe in karma and what goes around comes around."

West Ham have signed the Blackburn forward Benni McCarthy for around £2.5m,
on a two-and-a-half-year contract, but their attempt to get Gudjohnsen could
have cost them another of their targets, Benjani. Talks opened City last
week, only for West Ham's interest in to prompt them to put on hold.

Rovers, conscious that McCarthy was likely to move on, stepped in and have
begun talks with the Zimbabwean striker. They are confident of securing a
deal before the weekend. West Ham, who had drawn up a list of five forward
targets that also included Ruud van Nistelrooy and Stoke's James Beattie,
will readdress the situation over the rest of the week as they seek to
strengthen their squad further.
