Nigel Quashie has been passing on his valuable experience to the club's
aspiring youngsters
17.09.2009
After enduring an 18-month injury nightmare, Nigel Quashie is finally
enjoying his football again. The West Ham United and Scotland midfielder had
been left frustrated after suffering a foot injury in the 4-3 Barclays
Premier League defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in March 2007. Complications
meant the 31-year-old would not play again competitively until October 2008,
when he embarked on a loan spell at Championship high-fliers Birmingham
City. A loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers followed, before Quashie returned to
Chadwell Heath for pre-season training in the summer. Since then, he has
been working hard on his match fitness, as well as passing on his experience
to the club's aspiring youngsters.
Many of the Hammers' reserve and Academy players have remarked on the
assistance Quashie - who has made nearly 400 senior appearances during his
14-year career - has given them both on and off the pitch. "I have done
everything that has been asked of me," Quashie told WHUTV. "The manager
Gianfranco Zola has been first-class and just asked me to help the younger
ones and get on with that and also keep my fitness. "You never know in this
game, things can turn around. Obviously being out injured and with new
players coming in, it's been difficult for me. I'm in the last year of my
contract and I've still got a good few years to play and I want to stay fit
and stay healthy and enjoy my life.
"I've got to continue doing what's right for me and what's right for the
younger players, and that's giving them a little bit of guidance,
understanding and knowledge of the game. That will help them to develop.
"What you know from the first team here is that, if you're good enough,
you're old enough, and there's a lot of them who can play in the first team.
It's up to them to do the right things and some of them can get there."
Quashie has made two appearances for Alex Dyer's reserve team this season.
On Tuesday, he was again the senior player as a young Hammers side held out
for a goalless draw against an experienced Wolverhampton Wanderers team. "We
had a lot of young players and it was a learning curve for them. Wolves
brought a lot of experience down and it was a tough game for the boys. When
you're playing against experienced players, it's always going to be
difficult, but go kept going and kept digging in and the important thing is
that they learn from it."

Adebayor To Miss Hammers Clash
KUMB.com

EMMANEUL ADEBAYOR will miss West Ham's trip to Eastlands on Monday 28
September, after the Togo striker was given a 3-match ban by the F.A. The
punishment came about after Adebayor was charged with violent conduct for
appearing to stamp on the head of former team-mate Robin Van Persie's in
avoiding a challege from the Dutchman. The Manchester club do, however, have
an embrassment of riches with which to worry Upson, Green and co. Carlos
Tevez is though currently struggling for match-fitness but he should be fit
to face his former club. At least one ex-Hammers forward should be in
opposition, however, with the presence of Craig Bellamy who left Upton Park
in January 2009. The match will be live on ESPN: Kick off 8pm.

Neill Finds A Club

LUCAS NEILL is set to join Premeir League rivals Everton on a free-transfer,
after having a medical on Merseyside today. Everton manager David Moyes has
been forced to move for the former West Ham captain after seeing his own
skipper Phil Neville ruled out for a number of months after sustaining a
knee-injury at Fulham. Neill will seemingly offer Moyes midfield cover
rathen than at right-back, as the Toffees are well covered in the area with
Tony Hibbert and new-signing Johnny Heitinga. The Australian international
saw his contract expire this summer, but was unable to agree terms on an
extension, despite Hammers manager Gianfranco Zola stating his wish to keep
the defender. It is thought Neill, 31, was offered reduced terms on his
original contract sanctioned in January 2007 under previous CEO Eggert
Magnusson. After arriving from Blackburn Rovers it was rumoured that the
right-back was taking home £60K per week and it is believed that West Ham
offered Neill approximately half that figure to extend his stay at the
Boleyn. The offer was turned down by Neill and his advisors. An improved
offer from the club failed to materialise, with current CEO Scott Duxbury
intent on reducing the excesses of the previous regime. Neill was linked
with moves to Sunderland and Galatasaray earlier this summer although
neither move materialized.
Lucas Neill's West Ham career:
Joined: January 2007
Previous Club: Blackburn Rovers
Fee: £1.5m
Appearances:
79 (League) 1 goal
5 (FA Cup) 0 goals
5 (League Cup) 0 goals

Arsenal and West Ham still in the hunt for Chamakh despite Juventus talks
By Sportsmail Reporter

Daily Mail
Marouane Chamakh's representatives are pushing for further talks with West
Ham and Arsenal after they held a meeting with Juventus in Turin on
Wednesday. West Ham came agonisingly close to sealing a deal for the
Moroccan on the final day of the transfer window. He is free to sign a
pre-contract with European clubs on January 1. West Ham, meanwhile, have
completed the signing of released Villarreal striker Guillermo Franco, 32.
The Mexico international could go straight into the squad for this weekend's
game at home to Liverpool and said: 'I am really happy to sign for West Ham.
It was my dream to come to the Premier League and I am proud to play for a
club that has so much history.'

Carra to Luc for trouble?
By Derek Mcgovern 18/09/2009
The Mirror
Everton were sweating yesterday that their move for Lucas Neill wouldn't be
ambushed - by Jamie Carragher's mates. The Liverpool defender revealed in
his autobiography that his buddies were ready to duff up the Aussie defender
on a shopping trip as payback for a horror tackle that broke Carragher's
leg. The bad blood between them is, unusually for sport, 100 per cent
genuine, which is why bookies Stan James offer 7-2 for the two to be seen
shaking hands after a Mersey derby this season. Everton gave Neill a medical
yesterday - and are keeping the equipment handy, just in case. Neill once
turned down his childhood dream of joining Liverpool. It was also a
childhood dream of his to earn £90k a week and you can't turn down that sort
of money even if it means turning out for West Ham.
