Alex Dyer's men only just lost out in Monday night's reserve-team match at

Birmingham City reserves 2-1 West Ham United reserves HT
A spirited second-half display was not enough to help West Ham United
against a strong Birmingham side in Monday night's Barclays Premier Reserve
League South encounter at Solihull Moor FC.
The Blues had gone into the contest on a high after beating Chelsea last
week and took the lead on 16 minutes through Jake Jervis, who was able to
score from ten yards out. A deflected Damian Johnson effort put Birmingham
2-0 up on the half-hour but Frank Nouble gave the visitors hope early in the
second half. The powerful forward won a penalty with some bright play before
getting up and converting the spot-kick himself but that was to be the end
of the scoring.
The Hammers had their moments in the first half. Terry Dixon, partnering
Nouble again after their impressive partnership in last week's 5-2 defeat of
Stoke City, had the chance to equalise Jervis's effort on 23 minutes but his
shot was saved by Colin Doyle. The game seemed up when Johnson tried his
luck and saw his shot deflect off Bondz N'Gala, back from a loan at
Scunthorpe United, beyond the helpless Peter Kurucz.
The goalkeeper had better fortune just before the interval when diving to
his right to save well after a close-range Jervis effort. The home side had
several players in their starting lineup with first-team experience
including Franck Queudrue, Gregory Vignal, Lee Carsley and Gary McSheffrey.
For the visitors, Josh Payne, Kieron Dyer and Nouble were the only players
to have tasted Barclays Premier League action.
Nouble's penalty, awarded by referee Amy Rayner following a foul by Johnson,
offered plenty of hope after half-time but the second goal was not
forthcoming. In truth, Birmingham finished the stronger despite Alex Dyer
throwing on Eoin Wearen and Cristian Montano into the attack in a bid to
find an equaliser.
West Ham United: Kurucz, Eyjolfsson, N'Gala, Daprela, Ferrari, Payne, Dyer,
Kearns, Nouble, Dixon, Edgar

Step forward for Rush Green
WHUFC.com
The club has submitted planning permission for a new training ground at Rush
Green
30.11.2009
West Ham United are delighted to confirm that planning permission has been
submitted for a new training ground at Rush Green.
The club presented the proposals for the former Ford Sports and Social Club
facility to Havering Council on Monday morning. The 29-acre site was
purchased in the summer and promises to mark a major milestone in the club's
history. Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke have already visited the site and
will bring their considerable playing and coaching experience to the
project.
There will also remain a strong West Ham United presence at the existing
training ground at Chadwell Heath with the youth-team set-up under the
guidance of Academy Director Tony Carr set to benefit. Further development
is planned to create a proper base for the Academy of Football in keeping
with the traditions of a location that has been producing homegrown Hammers
since the days of Bobby Moore.
Of the Rush Green project, West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "This is
a major step forward for the club as a new training ground with world-class
facilities is fundamental to our vision for the next few years. Such a
development can only aid Gianfranco, his staff and players in their bid to
help the club achieve success.
"Chadwell Heath has been a fantastic home for many generations but I have
been aware in recent years that it is no longer fit for our first-team
aspirations. We have worked very hard to put this planning proposal together
and I would like to add my thanks to Havering Council for their cooperation
to date and in the future."
Development of the Rush Green site would be carried out in two phases. The
first phase would be to renovate the existing Sports Club, construct new
groundsman's buildings and install three full-size training pitches. When
complete this would allow the first-team squad and staff to move straight in
and begin work.
A final decision should be made early in the New Year. The club would like
to thank Havering Council for their input up to this stage following an
extensive consultation. The planning application has taken into full
consideration their views and thoughts on the proposed development.
The second phase would be to construct a purpose built state of the art
training, rehabilitation and media centre on the site that would ultimately
replace the temporary refurbished existing Sports Club building, together
with a further four training pitches and the renovation of the existing
stand and terracing around one of the pitches.
There is an intention for the club to play the majority of home reserve-team
games there in future years. This second phase is also subject to planning
permission being granted and the club will continue to build on their good
relationship with Havering in preparation of the phase two application.
West Ham United are delighted to be working within the borough and will
increase the club's community involvement even further. A key aim will be to
develop new partnerships with significant benefits to residents and
businesses in the area.
The new training ground will follow on the heels of a recent overhaul of the
club's medical and technical departments with significant investment in
expertise and equipment. As well as the work to come at Chadwell Heath,
there will also be continued development of the other club sites at Beckton
and Little Heath.

Parker leads the way
WHUFC.com
Scott Parker is urging his team-mates to take the positives out of
Saturday's 5-3 victory over Burnley
30.11.2009
Scott Parker has urged everyone connected with West Ham United to think
positive ahead of the Barclays Premier League visit of Manchester United.
The Hammers go into next Saturday's meeting with the champions having
beaten Burnley 5-3 last time out, a result that extended their recent run to
just one defeat in six matches. While some critics focused on the team's
conceding of three late goals to Burnley, Parker, who produced a
man-of-the-match display against the Clarets, was instead focusing on the
fact that Gianfranco Zola's side had pulled clear of the relegation zone.
"It's a win. Everyone can be negative after Saturday, including the players,
but being positive it helps so much. When you are positive and around people
positive, it makes you positive and that is what I think. We need be that.
"I could say that it is not the best preparation [for Manchester United] if
we let in three goals when five up, but we scored five and won the game at a
time when, had we lost, it would have looked not the best for us."
While stand-in captain Parker was happy with his side's attacking play, he
did admit that there were still defensive deficiencies that all the players
needed to work hard to eradicate. "It was a strange game. I had a strange
feeling when I came in as we won the game but I was a little bit gutted that
we let in three goals. The way the things are going for us, we need to be
positive and think about the positive things. "I think that at the moment we
are a little bit nervy, you can see that at times in our play. Last week [at
Hull City] was the same, we were two-nil up and let them back into the game
and then they were 3-2 within 20 minutes. So there is something there with
us at the moment. So we need to be strong, concentrate on the positive
things. "We scored five and won the game, but obviously there is a little
underlying problem which we need to sort."

Manager on Monday
WHUFC.com
A visit of the champions is already occupying Gianfranco Zola's thoughts but
he is more than positive
30.11.2009
Gianfranco Zola had a smile on his face when asked about the visit of
Manchester United on the back of an incredible home win against Burnley.
"Easy one next week?" was the question. "Yeah, nice and easy, don't remind
me," was the manager's light-hearted response. However, the Hammers are on a
high and will not overly fear the visit of the champions. With just one -
harsh - defeat in six games and with the likes of Scott Parker and Guillermo
Franco in fantastic form, morale is high.
It remains to be seen whether Carlton Cole will be involved with the striker
limping off with a knee problem at half-time in the 5-3 defeat of Burnley on
Saturday. He is being assessed while Matthew Upson (hamstring) and Valon
Behrami (knee) are not expected to be back this weekend. There are a few
positives from the treatment room, however.
Alessandro Diamanti could be in contention after his hip problem while James
Tomkins, Mark Noble and Kieron Dyer should all feel the benefit of another
week's training. The manager did not have to call on the recovering trio at
the weekend when all that mattered was to win and move clear of the bottom
three and in sight of mid-table.
Zola would have preferred a more routine afternoon, having moved five goals
in front on a chilly Saturday afternoon at the Boleyn Ground and seemingly
set for the biggest win of his time at the club. "Nobody was expecting them
to score three goals. We were in complete control of the game and we weren't
expecting it.
"Last week [against Hull] we've were 2-0 up and we saw the team coming back,
so right now we are a little bit shaky. It was a good day for us and I don't
want to spoil it with anything. I know that we have to defend better in
certain circumstances."
When asked about management turning him grey ahead of time, he replied: "I
think...the process is becoming quicker. If the final result is like this I
can take the risk, but I would like it to be a little bit smoother, that
would be ideal for me.
"It is very stressful but you learn to cope with this. You have to get to
the point in which you handle the pressure and keep focus. I try to do
normal things with my family. My family is the best way to relax. I spend
time with them, that is the best way."
The manager preferred to see the positives when reflecting further on the
professional aspect of his life. "You have to enjoy it. Come on, it's a
football game and you need to enjoy that. You just need to make sure that
the players realise that the game is never finished until the end.
"We have dropped so many points behind and we need to realise that we need
to be switched on until the end because the line between losing and winning
a game is so close. The mental side of that is so important.
"Right now I would rather win. I was an offensive player and obviously I
like the team to play offensively but there are moments in the game where
you have to be solid, and we know about that. As I said, let's celebrate and
then during the week we work on the mistakes."
Zola finished by saying he was aware of the expectations placed on him as
West Ham manager to play the game in the right manner - all the while
getting the results in the process. By that token, the Burnley encounter
ticked a lot of the boxes even if it was not to everyone's taste.
"I think we're doing football the way the fans like so that's what we try to
do over here and it's good. As I said, it was an important day to win and we
did so and I think we did it with style and that is the most important
thing."

Gianfranco Zola's men will start the new year with an FA Cup meeting with
Arsenal
29.11.2009
West Ham United have been drawn at home against Arsenal in the third round
of the 2009/10 FA Cup.
The match will be a repeat of the cup final 30 years ago, when Sir Trevor
Brooking headed the only goal of the game in the 13th minute at Wembley on
10 May 1980. The clubs last met in the FA Cup in the 1997/98 edition when
there was a 1-1 draw in a sixth-round replay at the Boleyn Ground before the
Gunners won 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

Arsenal took a two-goal lead on 25 October before Gianfranco Zola's men
battled back to earn a 2-2 draw. The return fixture at the Emirates Stadium

The Hammers were ball No42 in the hat when Olympic great Sir Steven Redgrave
and England women's football star Kelly Smith conducted the draw proceedings
at Wembley. The third round will be played on the weekend of 2/3 January
2010, with this stage seeing all Premier League and Championship clubs enter
for the first time.
Gianfranco Zola's men reached the fifth round last season, having knocked
out Barnsley and Hartlepool United before coming unstuck after a replay at
Middlesbrough. West Ham won the famous old competition in 1964 and 1975 as
well as in 1980.

Penalty poise cheers Cole
WHUFC.com
A first top-flight penalty gave Carlton Cole plenty of satisfaction after
victory against Burnley
29.11.2009
Carlton Cole has spoken of his delight at scoring from the penalty spot for
the first time in his career to make it seven goals for the season. Against
Burnley on Saturday, the England striker was determined to take the kick
when Jonathan Spector was upended just before half-time. Before kick-off at
the Boleyn Ground, he had scored 13 goals in 24 league matches since Boxing
Day 2008 but all had come from open play. Cole wanted to show he could
handle all aspects of a striker's role.
"I have never taken a penalty in the Premier League before," he said in an
exclusive post-match interview with WHUTV. "It was a good time to start. I
felt I had to take it. I had to prove to myself that I can take penalties in
pressure situations. It was the right time, we were two-up."
Cole converted with ease but few would have predicted the match would
ultimately finish 5-3 to the Hammers after an action-packed second half. The
26-year-old was off the pitch at the time, protecting a knee knock. Cole's
condition will be assessed in the week but, at the final whistle, he was
just happy for a win after the frustration of a 3-3 draw at Hull City last
weekend.
"It was a really good result for the lads. I always said we deserved more
goals and we have scored eight goals in the last two games now. Scoring
goals isn't a problem, we just need to tighten up defensively. We showed
character. We bounced back from last week's draw that we felt we should have
won. We scored good goals which are good for the confidence.
"It is nice to come off with a victory. We are going into the Man United
fixture [next Saturday] and hopefully we can get a good result here as well.
Hopefully we can put the ball in the net and upset the champions."

West Ham eye new training ground at Rush Green
BBC.co.uk
Rush Green is based about six miles east of West Ham's Upton Park stadium.
West Ham have submitted a planning permission application for a new training
ground based at Rush Green. The club already own the 29-acre site two miles
from their current facilities at Chadwell Heath, Essex. The proposals were
presented to Havering Council on Monday morning and a decision is expected
early in 2010. West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury said: "A new training
ground with world-class facilities is fundamental to our vision for the next
few years."
The planned development of the site, which was bought by the club in the
summer, would see three full-size training pitches constructed and a new
groundsman's building. A second phase of development would create four more
training pitches, a new media centre and a state-of-the-art rehabilitation
centre. On the pitch, Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola may be without
Switzerland midfielder Valon Behrami for around three weeks as he needs
minor surgery on a knee injury. Zola is also waiting to hear the full extent
of Carlton Cole's knee injury after the England striker was injured during
the 5-3 Premier League win over Burnley on Saturday. The better news for the
Italian is that midfielder Kieron Dyer has been scheduled for a reserve game
against Birmingham as he steps up his comeback to full match-fitness.

West Ham United have confirmed that work on the new training ground could
start next year after the club submitted planning permission to Havering
Council for a new state-of-the-art development.
As confirmed by CEO Scott Duxbury in the recent exclusive KUMB.com
interview, the club purchased the land earlier this year with view to moving
all first team training facilities from the current site at Chadwell Heath.
The Rush Green plans are split into two phases; the first being to renovate
the existing Sports Club, install buildings for the groundsman and construct
three training pitches, with the second phase to include the erection of a
'purpose built, state-of-the-art training, rehabilitation and media centre
to replace the renovated Sports Club and four further training pitches.
Scott Duxbury, talking about the plans on whufc.com this lunchtime said:
"This is a major step forward for the club as a new training ground with
world-class facilities is fundamental to our vision for the next few years.
Such a development can only aid Gianfranco, his staff and players in their
bid to help the club achieve success.
"Chadwell Heath has been a fantastic home for many generations but I have
been aware in recent years that it is no longer fit for our first-team
aspirations. We have worked very hard to put this planning proposal together
and I would like to add my thanks to Havering Council for their cooperation
to date and in the future."
It is planned that Tony Carr's Youth Academy should remain at its historical
Chadwell Heath base, whilst reserve team fixtures - currently played at
Bishops Strortford - should eventually take place at Rush Green.

Carlton Cole is awaiting the results of a scan to determine the extent of
ligament damage sustained during Saturday's 5-3 win over Burnley. The United
striker took the knock when colliding with Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen
towards the end of the first half and was immediately taken to hospital for
a scan. The results of that remain unknown at present although at least one
source is suggesting this morning that the England striker could be out for
up to four months, should worst fears be realised. Gianfranco Zola,
speaking after the eight-goal thriller said: It is his right knee. He
twisted it a little bit. If it's ligaments then, yes, it could be a while.
But I'm not a doctor. "Everybody knows how important Carlton is for us, so
hopefully it will not prove to be too bad."

West Ham United will face London neighbours Arsenal at the Boleyn Ground in
the third round of the FA Cup. The Irons - who famously became the last club
outside of the top flight to win the coveted trophy when beating Arsenal 1-0
at Wembley 29 years ago - were pitched against the Gunners in this
afternoon's draw, conducted by 2018 World Cup bid ambassadors Sir Steve
Redgrave and Kelly Smith.
The last meeting between the two sides in the competition came in the
1997/98 season when the clubs met in both FA Cup and League Cup quarter
finals within a matter of weeks - Arsenal eventually winning both, including
a 4-3 penalty shootout win in the FA Cup tie (a replay following a 1-1 draw
ay Highbury).
Rather more fondly remembered however is the 1989 third round meeting when
Leroy Rosenior scored the only goal of the game at Highbury, following a 2-2
draw in the initial tie at the Boleyn. West Ham, as now, were struggling at
the foot of the old Division One whilst Arsenal were flying high.
All in all the teams have met on 14 occasions in the competition, with West
Ham winning five and Arsenal three (with six ties drawn).

Quashie happy to drop down
Midfielder glad to be playing first-team football again
By Chris Galea Last updated: 30th November 2009
SSN
MK Dons' on-loan midfielder Nigel Quashie insists he is more than happy to
drop down divisions to get his playing career back on track. The former
Scotland international has struggled to break into the first team at West
Ham since returning from a long-term foot injury last season. He impressed
in the Championship last term during loan spells with both Birmingham City
and Wolves, but he told skysports.com that he would rather be playing
regularly in League One than sitting on the sidelines in the top-tier. "I've
breezed through the reserve games and I think West Ham have realised that I
can't gain any more from playing at that level," said Quashie. "I'm beyond
that now, so this is now a chance to go out on loan and show what I can do
at first-team level because there is no point in me sitting around at home,
which is what I've been told to do. "I've got a good contract with West Ham
for this season, but I'm not the sort of person that is happy sitting
around. "I want to be playing and hopefully I can do well for MK Dons and
help them progress this season, whilst helping myself at the same time."
The 31-year-old revealed that other clubs were interested in taking him on
loan, but that Paul Ince's side was the one which offered him the best deal
in terms of games available to play in. He added: "That is one thing that
will benefit me because the Christmas period brings with it a vast amount of
games in a short space of time, which is ideal for me. "I need to get as
many games under my belt in a month that I can really and I've looked at
fixture lists and calculated how many games I could play in potentially.
"There were other clubs looking at taking me on loan, but I needed to get
things done quickly and they (MK Dons) wanted the same thing as me in terms
of getting a deal done as quick as possible."

Zola hopeful over Cole injury
Hammers boss will know more after scans
By Richard Bailey Last updated: 29th November 2009

Gianfranco Zola remains hopeful that Carlton Cole will not be out for too
long after injuring his knee against Burnley. The Hammers striker came off
at the interval having scored from the spot two minutes before the break to
give the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead. In the end Zola's men did not seem to
miss their star frontman, winning the game 5-3 having been 5-0 up at one
stage. However, the victory was slightly marred by the injury to Cole, who
has seven league goals this term, and Zola admitted he will know more after
the scans. "He twisted it (knee) a little bit, and the shin, but we will
find out more after a scan," he said. "If it is ligaments, it could be a
while, but it is very difficult for me to say, so fingers crossed.
"Everybody knows how important Carlton Cole is for us, so hopefully it is
not going to be too bad."

Parker: West Ham senior players not hiding

Scott Parker says none of West Ham United's senior players are hiding. The
midfielder was outstanding in their 5-3 win over Burnley. Parker, 29, said:
"You get to a point in your career where you are known as an upcoming kid
and then you play a certain amount of games and with that comes experience.
"You get wiser and you realise what do to and what not to. That is the case
here. The senior players in our dressing room take it upon ourselves as we
have young players in the squad that are new to it all. "We are all trying
to do our best to chip in. We just need to keep going and be positive. After
a 5-3 victory we need to do that."

for around £4 to £5 million. Hammers want cash to balance their books and
offer boss Gianfranco Zola some funds for a replacement, with several
possible targets being checked. Green is unsettled by the current form of
his team, criticising them recently for their attitude. He would certainly
be open to a transfer to keep him in Fabio Capello's good books. The former

Tottenham are set to make a swap offer for West Ham United defender Matthew
Upson. The People says Tottenham are lining up a £10million move for Upson,
with Alan Hutton going the other way. With uncertainty surrounding the
long-term future of Ledley King, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is keen to
attract another experienced defender. West Ham are facing financial
difficulties and Upson would be a favourite to leave Upton Park following
superb displays which have seen him cement his place in the England squad.
Hutton, 25 tomorrow, has fallen way down the pecking order at Tottenham and
struggles to find a way past Vedran Corluka or Kyle Naughton. The Scottish
international is keen to get his career back on track and would favour a
move to West Ham because he would not have to move house.
