Ashton keen to take on Tottenham - WHUFC
Dean Ashton wants a first-team return after looking sharp in training
22.11.2007

Dean Ashton is ready and willing to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday
afternoon.

The striker said: "Everything has gone really well. I have trained for a
week and a half. If I get through the rest of the week well, I will be
available for selection on Sunday." Alongside Scott Parker, he came through
a practice match at Chadwell Heath on Wednesday, scoring with a header in a
5-0 victory against Southampton.

Ashton is particularly eager to return to first-team action this weekend,
having had to watch from the sidelines last season when the club lost 4-3 to
Tottenham in dramatic circumstances - although it was to prove the turning
point in the survival fight.

"It was hard to take last season because I thought we played so well and you
saw the scenes at the end of the game - the players were devastated," he
said. "This year we really want to win and I want to play a part in it as
well." Ashton turns 24 on Saturday and a run-out in a derby victory after
more than six weeks on the sidelines would be the perfect birthday present.

Ashton spoke to WHUTV while at a special open day for the Kickz project,
held at the West Ham United in the Community training ground in Beckton.
Backed by the Football Foundation and the Met Police Authority, Kickz
provides three sessions a week - allowing the club's community staff to
reach in excess of 350 youngsters every week. Ashton saw at first hand some
of the good work being done - not least a 'show racism the red card'
workshop with former club favourite Leroy Rosenior and also watched some
special coaching sessions.

Stokes on loan at Stevenage - WHUFC
The 20-year-old midfielder Tony Stokes has joined Stevenage Borough
22.11.2007

West Ham United have agreed to let attacking midfielder Tony Stokes join
Blue Square Premier side Stevenage Borough on a two-month loan.

The Academy product has been in good form of late, scoring a wonder goal for
the reserves in a 2-2 draw against Arsenal on 6 November and then following
up with a hat-trick in a practice match on Wednesday. Stokes has previously
had loan spells with Rushden & Diamonds during the 2005/06 campaign,
featuring in 18 games, and at Brighton and Hove Albion when he played seven
league and cup matches at the start of last season

The 20-year-old, who has played once for the West Ham United first team in a
League Cup match in September 2005, should make his debut for Stevenage in
Monday's visit of Altrincham, which is live on Setanta Sports. Stevenage,
under new manager Peter Taylor, have also signed defenders Zoltan Liptak and
John White from Southend United and Colchester United on loan deals.
Stevenage are sixth in the Conference table, one point and one place outside
of the play-off positions.

Colchester eye West Ham's Ephraim - BBC

Colchester United manager Geraint Williams wants to sign West Ham's teenage
forward Hogan Ephraim. The Hammers forward had a spell on loan with the U's
last season and this season has been with QPR. The 19-year-old is understood
to have been the subject of a £500,000 bid from the Championship club.
"Hogan's a player we know all about and if West Ham were interested in
selling him we'd be interested in buying him," boss Geraint Williams told
BBC Essex.
"We've spoken to West Ham but I believe there are a couple of other clubs
interested so it's down to Hogan to decide where he wants to go."

Williams admits Hogan interest - KUMB

By: Matthew O'Greel

Colchester boss Geriant Willaims has confirmed he is interested in signing
West Ham youth striker Hogan Ephraim.
The Us boss, who had Ephraim on loan last season, confirmed reports that the
Championship side are interested in bringing the Islington-born youngster to
Layer Road on a permanent basis. "Hogan was with us last year and he is a
player we liked a lot," said Williams. "We're always looking to improve the
squad and Hogan is a player who could do that. "He's certainly one we are
looking at." Ephraim, who has represented England at youth level, is yet to
make a first team start for West Ham United.

West Ham Utd v Tottenham Hotspur - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 22nd November 2007
By: Matthew Coker

We reserve an extra special, East London welcome this Sunday for Tottenham
Hotspur, as we face off in a 1.30pm kick off in front of the Sky cameras.

The plight of this week's opponents has caused amusement all around the
country, not least in our neck of the woods. Had you arrived on Earth in the
summer, you could easily be convinced that Spurs were a major force in
English football, a shoe in for Champions League qualification this season
and the backing of all manner of experts, including Jose Mourinho, had the
Spurs fans counting their cockerels in pre season.

When the season kicked off, they began the campaign with an opening day
defeat at Sunderland, followed by a loss in the first home game to Everton
which saw them sink into the relegation zone. This situation has only
recently altered as they have climbed to the dizzy height of 14th with a
total of 11 points, six short of our tally to date.

Our foes have only managed two victories this season, both at home, both by
four goals to nil with the opponents being Derby County and Wigan Athletic.
The remainder of their points have come from draws, four of them on the road
against Bolton, Fulham, Liverpool and Middlesbrough as well as a point
earned in a 4-4 showdown at White Hart Lane with Aston Villa.

The poor start led to the early season dismissal of Martin Jol and his
replacement, Juande Ramos, has arrived suited and booted in the Lane
technical area. They have gone on something of a run since his appointment
where they have achieved three victories and a draw and kept three clean
sheets. However, when your opponents are Blackpool and Hapoel Tel Aviv as
well as the Premier League luminaries of Wigan and Middlesbrough, it seems a
little early to be talking of turnarounds yet.

The problems that have plagued the not-so-Hotspurs this season have been a
succession of injuries to their defensive players, a lack of fitness
throughout the squad, and a succession of under par individual performances.
These factors have produced a number of poor results and subsequently the
team has seen its confidence erode and this in turn has led to further
defeats.

With the absence of Richardo Rocha, Anthoney Gardener and Ledley King
expected to continue at the weekend, with the effects of Marcos Alvarez's
double training and tailored sports drinks taking time to have an effect and
with Didier Zokora and Paul Robinson still in the starting line up, it is
difficult to see that any coach could produce many genuine improvements in
time for the weekend, or in reality before the January transfer window
opens.

"Certainly I can build my team with Robinson as my goalkeeper. I think he's
one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and he's the No 1 in
England."
- Juande Ramos may find the locals beg to differ this weekend.

It has already been a bad week for Paul Robinson, following his demotion
from the national team to the outskirts of the squad. He is unlikely to get
much sympathy from the home support who begrudge that he has been wrongly
preferred to our candidate for the England number one spot. For West Ham's
sake, hopefully he'll continue at a similar level of performance that he
displayed both at the tail end of last season and for much of this.

The back four will line up with the seemingly disinterested Pascal Chimbonda
on the right, the irresolute duo of Micheal Dawson and Younes Kaboul in the
middle and with right footer, Young-Pyo Lee on the left. The defence has
looked shaky all season and they tend to guard the goal to the standard that
the Government guards it citizen's bank details.

The centre of midfield is also a weak spot, all elements of defensive
midfielder, Didier Zokora's play have been lacking in this campaign and he
does not provide sufficient cover to bolster an out-of sorts back line.
Jermaine Jenas has been his partner in the middle where he has played well
but not consistently well. His last outing, the 4-0 win against Wigan, saw
him net a brace, which either suggests that he has hit form or alternatively
that he has found his level.

The wide men have been one area of encouragement for Spurs, the fresh faced
Gareth Bale had turned in some very mature performances on the left prior to
his recent injury, and Steed Malbranque has been filling the creative void
in his absence. Bale is an outside bet to return for this one.

Aaron Lennon has seen his season stutter due to injury, but he also scored
against Wigan, which may provide a boost in fortune, for someone who is
traditionally a confidence player.

Spurs Strike Fours

The strength in depth of the side lies up front with a choice of four
International strikers and only league leaders, Arsenal, have scored more
league goals than Spurs this season. Ramos has attempted to make use of the
choice as all four strikers have featured at some point in all of the games
that he has been in charge.

The first choice duo seems to be Robbie Keane (six league goals to date) and
Dimitar Berbatov (three league goals to date) which initially looks as
though it is your classic little and large duo. However, there is some
debate amongst supporters that these two have a very similar style in that
they can both drop deep and create goals and that this combo perhaps doesn't
contain a natural goalscorer.

West Ham did have some involvement in the Darren Bent transfer over the
summer, where in the same way that we poked our nose in the Joey Barton
deal, we were able to feign interest in Bent to help inflate the price.
Despite his pace and ability to finish (which have yielded three goals to
date), he is clearly not a £16m striker, when players of a similar quality
can be bought for half the value. His commercial worth is also questionable
as Tottenham fans must be worried that having "Bent" on their back may be
judged as a lifestyle choice rather than admiration for their favourite
striker.

Last in the pecking order and the only forward yet to claim a league goal,
though he must top offsides achieved tablea, is former Hammer, Jermaine
Defoe. He is a player that I love to watch on Match of the Day, though only
for the opening credits. If you watch closely, you'll see that he is
featured in the title in his normal clothes, whereas all the other
footballers are dressed in football kits, amusing in respect of how much
football he actually gets to play these days.

I am not down with the youngsters enough to recognise exactly what labels he
is wearing, but I would like to think he was draped head to toe in Bench
clothing, which would confirm my theory that this was the work of a West Ham
fan with a sense of humour in the BBC Production team.

"I'm looking at the Tottenham game for my return and I'm confident I'll be
ready for then."
– Dean Ashton

The big question for West Ham is just who are we going to get back. We have
suffered a ridiculous amount of injuries this season and when you consider
they have almost exclusively been assigned to the front line and the
creative midfielders, I'm surprised that we have scored as many goals as we
have and that we are in as comfortable a league position as we are.

In the game against Bolton, we were crying out for a little bit more
quality, just to craft out a second goal and it was obvious that had Ashton,
Bellamy or even Zamora been involved in that game, we could reasonably
expected to have added to the tally.

My belief is that we will be able to end the short run of clean sheets that
Spurs have put together and if the rumours that more than one of our first
choice strikers will be competing for a place alongside a deserved start for
Carlton Cole, then I can see us netting more than once. However, their goal
scoring record this season cannot be underestimated and think keeping a
clean sheet will be out of the question.

I'll plump for a 3-2 win for the Hammers in a decent and open game, the
outcome decided by us having the better defence and goalkeeper.

Enjoy the game.

Ephraim stays - for now - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 22nd November 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Hogan Ephraim has rejected a loan move to Colchester. The Us had wanted to
take the young United midfielder back to Layer Road on a temporary basis -
but the 19-year-old youth international snubbed the offer. Ephraim's current
contract is set to expire next year and with no new offer on the table his
future appears to lay elsewhere. However Colchester boss Geriant Williams
remains optimistic that a deal could still be done. "We were looking to sign
Hogan on a loan deal with a view to a permanent basis in January," he told
cu-fc.com. "We had talks with Hogan and his representatives, but he has
since informed us that he won't be joining us at this moment in time."
Ephraim previously spent six months on loan at Layer Road last season. He
has recently returned from a loan spell at QPR.

Ephraim rejects U's move - SSN
Winger turns down return to Layer Road
Last updated: 22nd November 2007

West Ham United winger Hogan Ephraim has turned down a return to Colchester
United on loan.
Prior to Thursday's loan deadline, U's boss Geraint Williams revealed he had
made an offer to re-sign the youngster. Ephraim enjoyed a loan spell at
Layer Road last season and has recently completed a three-month stint at
Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers. Williams was hoping to persuade the
19-year-old to rejoin the club on loan with a view to a permanent deal in
January.
But the Colchester manager has confirmed that Ephraim has rejected the
chance of a second spell with the U's in order to stay at West Ham. "We were
looking to sign Hogan on a loan deal with a view to a permanent basis in
January," Williams told the club's official website. "As mentioned earlier,
we have had talks with Hogan and his representatives, but he has since
informed us that he won't be joining us at this moment in time."

Ashton targets Spurs return - SSN
Hammers striker fit and raring to go
By Lewis Rutledge Last updated: 22nd November 2007

Dean Ashton is confident he will be fit to feature for West Ham in this
Sunday's Premier League clash against Tottenham. The striker has been
sidelined since suffering a medial ligament injury in early October that
ruled him out of England's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia.
But he has made good progress in his recovery and is eager to play some part
in the London derby.
"Everything has gone really well. I have trained for a week and a half and
if I get through the rest of the week well, I will be available for
selection on Sunday," he told the West Ham''s official website.
Ashton is particularly keen to make his return this weekend as he was absent
through injury last season when West Ham lost 4-3 to Tottenham in dramatic
fashion. He recalled: "It was hard to take last season because I thought we
played so well and you saw the scenes at the end of the game - the players
were devastated. "This year we really want to win and I want to play a part
in it as well."

Ephraim heads for the exit - West Ham Online
Match Reporter - Thu Nov 22 2007

Hogan Ephraim headed out of West Ham today when he signed for Colchester on
an initial 3 month loan deal before today's 5pm deadline. The loan is with a
view of joining on a full time basis in the transfer window. It's believed
that West Ham are asking £500,000 for the Islington born 19 year old, who
has represented England at youth level.
Earlier this week Colchester manager Geraint Williams sung the praise of
Ephraim who made 5 starts and appeared 16 times as a sub, scoring 1 goal for
Colchester last season whilst on loan. He also admitted an undisclosed bid
had been made. More recently the midfielder had spent a period on loan at
QPR where he impressed with 2 goals from 8 starts, he made another 5
appearances as sub. Despite being a regular and impressing at both youth and
reserves level for West Ham, many will feel he deserved more then the 4
minutes he had in the first team in a Carling Cup game in September 2005
when he replaced Gavin Williams in the 4-2 win.

We wish him luck.

Potters fail with double bid - ESS
Last Updated: Thu, 22 Nov 2007 14:39

Stoke boss Tony Pulis looks to have failed with bids to land Nigel Quashie
and Salif Diao before the transfer deadline.
Pulis has been chasing Quashie for the last few weeks but it looks as though
a move is not going to happen, as West Ham have a number of injury problems
at Upton Park. Diao is a free agent and can sign at any time but the
midfielder has so far not given any indication that he is ready for a second
spell at the Britannia Stadium. Pulis had been hoping to draft in at least
one new player but it looks as though he has failed. "We were close to
getting a couple in," Pulis said of his efforts to draft in reinforcements,
"but now it looks more optimistic about Christmas time."

Katy and Tracy hit their first hat-tricks - Ilford Recorder
22 November 2007

FA PREMIER WOMEN'S LEAGUE SOUTH
West Ham Utd 12
Reading Royals 0

WEST Ham Ladies romped to their all-time record league win against a Reading
side who, despite being out of their depth, battled right to the end and
never gave up.

Katy Ling and Tracy Duxbury both registered their first hat-tricks for the
club with Sam Pittuck hitting a brace and the remaining goals coming from
Natalie Grafton, Clare Rogers and Dani Hoy and to compound the Royals
problems - an own goal in the final minute of the game.

Hammers manager Tony Marshall said: "The whole of our team impressed me but
Sam Pittuck was superb today, Katy Ling showed some tremendous quality in
front of goal and with her build-up play, while at the back Carly Roache
personified composure."

On Sunday, the Hammers make the long trek to Cornwall to take on Newquay who
play at Truro City FC.

West Ham: Monro, Roache, Barling (Hoy), Rogers, Coombs, White, Pittuck
(Fowler), Ling, Duxbury, Morgan (Grafton).

FA Premier Women's

Reserve League

Barnet 2 West Ham United 1

ELLA Chapman celebrated her 16th birthday in some style as she scored on her
debut for the reserves, but even she could not inspire the Hammers to
victory over Barnet.

The Hammers almost took an early lead when forward Sophie Walker went round
the Barnet keeper only to slip on the wet surface before she could convert.

However, it was Barnet who netted deep into first half injury time with
their forward curling home via the post.

The Hammers came out strongly in the second half and Justyna Giero hit the
bar with a thundering shot in the opening minutes, before Chapman equalised
from an Emma Harrison cross. Barnet scored a deflected goal within two
minutes of Chapman's effort to secure a narrow victory.

West Ham: Coombs, Benjamin, Bovington, Goddard, Scott, King, Giero, Rolls,
Chapman, Harrison, Walker. Subs: Cowley, Beard, Crowe.

Essex Girls' League

Leigh Rockets 1

West Ham United 11

WEST Ham's under-16s now need only one more win to put the Essex Girls'
League title beyond doubt after this mauling of Leigh.

From the start West Ham went on the attack and with 10 minutes played
Kimmilee Day scored the first goal and minutes later a pass from Katy Bottom
found Stephanie Coe who made it 2-0.

From then on it was goal after goal as Zoe Marshall, Bottom, Coe, Leanne
Stubbings (2) and Day gave the Hammers an 8-0 lead.

A great solo goal by Day made it 9-0 and completed her hat-trick, before
Maddie Thomas and Emma Sherwood completed the rout after Rockets had struck
a consolation.

West Ham: Dunphy, Allen, Stubbings, Colley, O'Brien, Marshall, Coe, Bottom,
Thomas, Feltham, Day. Subs: Cooley, Keown, Sherwood, Franklynn.

Writtle Minors 1

West Ham United 7

WEST Ham's under-14s came away from a cold and windy Writtle with a victory
that was never quite as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.

The introduction of Danielle Robertson after 20 minutes, proved to be the
key that unlocked the stubborn Writtle resistance, and with her first touch
she nipped in to tuck home Eden Marsh's long free-kick.

The goal settled the Hammers and they soon added a second when Naomi Hayes
created space for Eden Marsh, who cut in and curled home before Robertson
chipped home a third.

Within a minute of the restart a powerful Hayley Busby run down the right
wing saw her pick out Robertson who completed her hat-trick and after
Writtle had pulled one back, Faye Cook notched and Marsh completed her own
treble to put the gloss on this tremendous victory.

West Ham: L Picton, F Picton, Foster, Trimby, Kelleher, Hayes, Houlihan,
Wood, Busby, Marsh, Cook, Subs: Baker, Robertson.

Striker Ashton back in action as West Ham thrash Saints - Daily Mail

West Ham hope to have Dean Ashton back in their attack when they face
Tottenham at Upton Park on Sunday. The striker continued his return from
injury by playing in a behind closed doors friendly against Southampton,

have also been sidelined, could be in contention as well after proving their
fitness in the match.

STOKE CITY: D-DAY FOR STOKE - This Is Staffordshire
09:40 - 22 November 2007

Stoke City face a race against time to sign West Ham midfielder Nigel
Quashie before today's 5pm deadline for loan moves. Meanwhile, manager Tony
Pulis hopes to finally land midfielder Salif Diao, bringing to an end a
pursuit which began in May when the 30-year-old's short-term deal with Stoke
finished at the end of last season. Sources suggest Quashie is high on a
list of Stoke targets ahead of the deadline to sign players on loan before
the January transfer window. However, the deadline doesn't apply to Diao,
who is a free agent having not registered with a club since leaving Stoke. A
possible double swoop would bring extra quality and experience to a midfield
which has come under fire from some fans in recent weeks as Stoke have lost
three consecutive home games. Pulis has been keen on Quashie since the
29-year-old Scottish international returned to action for West Ham's
reserves a month ago.
The central midfielder, a £1.5m capture from West Brom last January, had
been out with an ankle ligament injury since March. However, West Ham boss
Alan Curbishley has been reluctant to release Quashie, and publicly ruled
out the move three weeks ago because he had too many injuries in his squad.
Since then, Hammers midfielders Freddie Ljungberg, Scott Parker, Mark Noble
and Hayden Mullins have all moved back into contention after injury. City's
assistant manager Dave Kemp refused to comment on individual targets.
However, he said clubs might wait to see whether players had returned fit
from last night's international games before deciding whether to release
other squad members on loan. He added: "Every manager has to cover their own
back, so that may be a factor. We will have to wait and see."
Pulis and Quashie enjoy a long-standing mutual respect after the manager
revived the midfielder's career by signing him for Portsmouth from
Nottingham Forest in August 2000. Pulis paid £600,000 for Quashie, two years
after the midfielder had left his first club, QPR, in a £2.5m switch to
Forest. His subsequent moves to Southampton, West Brom and West Ham mean he
has so far commanded £7.9m in transfer fees during a 354-game career. City
have persisted with their interest in Diao following his impressive
performances last season. He played 29 games having initially signed on loan
from Liverpool. His agent, Charles Collymore, claimed as far back as August
that a deal with Stoke was close. Pulis has since suggested the hold-up is
due to Diao's personal circumstances rather than finances. THE vast majority
of Stoke City fans responding to our online poll concerning a permanent
tribute for John Ritchie were in favour of honouring the club's all-time
leading goalscorer. Of the votes cast, 82 per cent were in favour of a
Ritchie tribute.

Xmas wish for West Ham fans: Bilic as West Ham's new Wenger! -
arsenalanalysis.blogspot.com
By The Coach (who is really a crypto West Ham fan!)

Bilic is an ex-West Ham great who has proven to have Wenger-like qualities
in building up teams that are young and exciting and most of all effective.

He can be the new Wenger of the Premiership and I am sure he would jump at
the chance to coach a Premiership team especially at his old stamping
ground, Upton Park.

The West Ham Board should recognise opportunities when they arise and find a
way to make them happen.

I was totally impressed with Bilic's ability to bring together young talent
and shape a team that can play good football and most of all a team that is
capable of beating anyone.

The style of football that Croatia displayed at Wembley the other night is
indeed the football that West Ham were known for but sadly now only seen in
glimpses.

It wasn't that long ago when Sir Trevor Brooking et al and even before him
when the Great Bobby Moore was the captain that West Ham were admired for
the way they played the beautiful game.

Bilic is the man and the Board should be clever enough to see and grasp this
opportunity to transform West Ham into a power in football again. It won't
happen overnight, but Bilic more than Curbishley knows how to achieve it.

The most Curbishley can manage is to use his old and trusted methods to just
keep West Ham away from trouble. But is this enough?

Having been a West Ham admirer for so many years, I think it is time the
club moved on. It is time to show a little more ambition.
