The Big Interview - Razvan Rat
WHUFC.com
West Ham United's new signing Razvan Rat has fulflled a dream by moving to
the Premier League
22.05.2013

Romania captain Razvan Rat cannot wait to tackle the challenge of Barclays
Premier League football head on after agreeing to join West Ham United on a
free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk. The 31-year-old left-back spent ten
years with the Ukrainian champions and enjoyed great success, winning a
total of 12 trophies during his time at the club. But having found the lure
of English football too much to resist, Rat is thrilled to have committed
his future to the Hammers.

First of all Razvan, a very big welcome to West Ham United. How excited are
you to be signing here?

RR - "I am very excited, because it has been my dream to play in England, so
I am very happy to be here. I was at Shakhtar for ten years, so I must thank
them for understanding my decision to come here. I've chosen England, I've
chosen West Ham and I'm very happy for that."

You were at Shakhtar for a very long time, so how big a decision was it to
leave?

RR - "This is what I want to tell you, that it was a big decision for me.
After ten years, it is very hard to move with everything - your family and
everything like that - so it is true that for the moment it might not be so
easy, but I know me and I know that I will adapt very soon. I think it will
not be a problem. I hope that the fans will adopt me as one of their own and
I'm really looking forward to being one of the team."

You've played in the UEFA Champions League with Shakhtar and EURO 2008 for
Romania, but how much of a challenge is it to be coming to the Barclays
Premier League?

RR - "I think that the Premier League is the best championship in the world.
It's an honour for me and a big pleasure to play here. I played a lot of
games in the Champions League [at Shakhtar], but you never know, perhaps we
can get there or to the Europa League with West Ham. Anything can happen. I
think we have a good team and if everything is as we plan, we'll be a tough
team [to beat]."

The season has just finished and West Ham had a good first year back in the
Premier League, finishing tenth, so you must be looking forward to trying to
build on that now over the next couple of seasons?

RR - "Yes. I plan to end my career here, but not so soon - I hope it will be
in something like five or six years. I plan to be here for a long time and I
will give my best for my team and to give good performances here."

How much has the manager Sam Allardyce spoken to you about his hopes for
next season?

RR - "We'll have a lot of time to speak about his philosophy and what we
wants from me. I will be happy to help him and to be in the team as a
regular player. [I want to be a] man who will be loved by the fans."

Finally, for the fans who may not have seen you play before, how would you
describe yourself as a player?

RR - "I won't say anything about myself now. I just want to do my best and
let the fans appreciate what I will do on the field. This is the most
important thing for me, above everything, the love of the fans."

Cole to depart

Carlton Cole will leave West Ham United this summer after the Club decided
not to renew his contract
22.05.2013

West Ham United can confirm that long-serving striker Carlton Cole will
leave this summer after the Club decided not to renew his contract. The
29-year-old will depart the Boleyn Ground after seven seasons, during which
he made 237 appearances, scored 59 goals and became a firm favourite among
Hammers supporters. He played an important role in the Club's promotion from
the npower Championship last season, scoring 15 times, including the opening
goal in the Championship Play-Off final victory over Blackpool at Wembley a
year ago. West Ham United would like to thank Carlton for his hard work,
goals and outstanding commitment over the past seven seasons and wish him
every success in his future career. The Hammers can also confirm that they
remain in talks with midfielder Gary O'Neil over a new contract. The No32
made 27 first-team appearances in 2012/13, scoring once. Hammers manager Sam
Allardyce said: "Carlton's contract has come to an end and we have decided
not to renew that contract. "Carlton's need at his age is to be playing
football as often as he can. From our point of view we felt it better that
he found pastures new. "We can only thank him for his outstanding commitment
and service to West Ham United over the last seven years. "For Gary,
negotiations are ongoing and that will be done between the Chairmen and his
agent now."

Young professionals Jake Larkins, Jack Powell, Eoin Wearen and Declan Hunt
and scholars Cheye Alexander, Nigel Seidu and Josh Siafa will all leave the
Club when their contracts expire this summer. West Ham United would like to
thank all of them for their efforts and wish them every success in the
future.

UEFA Festival comes to Stratford

West Ham United will be well represented when the UEFA Champions Festival
comes to Stratford this week
22.05.2013

West Ham United will be well represented when the UEFA Champions Festival
heads towards the Olympic Stadium this week to coincide with Saturday's
Champions League final. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will be battling
it out to be crowned Europe's finest at Wembley Stadium on 25 May, but UEFA
is bringing all the excitement firmly into the Hammers heartland with a
special four-day extravaganza in the stunning shadow of the Olympic Stadium.
Visitors will also get the chance of a fantastic view of the Hammers' new
home from 2016.

From Thursday 23 May to Sunday 26 May, UEFA will be taking over the
International Quarter, Stratford with a host of free football-themed
activities and things for the whole family to enjoy. The Football
Association is arranging a grassroots programme, coinciding with its 150th
anniversary and marking its role as host federation. The FA is also inviting
a number of ambassadors along.

Hammers supporter Mark Hunter MBE will be among them, with the gold
medal-winning rower due to be at the Festival on the Sunday afternoon. Other
great names will be in attendance including Final ambassadors Faye White and
Steve McManaman, while the Ultimate Champions match on Saturday promises to
be a thriller with the likes of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane will take
part.

Hammers fans will also potentially be able to have their photos taken with
the UEFA Champions League trophies - the women's final is on Thursday 23 May
at Stamford Bridge - as well as visit the official UEFA Champions League
museum to experience all the memories of past tournaments. Sir Trevor
Brooking, FA Director of Football Development, said: "It is great that we at
The FA are able to support the UEFA Champions Festival in a part of London
that is very close to my heart. I am particularly proud that we will be
putting on a showcase of our grassroots work as this has been a major focus
of our 150th anniversary celebrations this year. "We invest £100m back into
the game each year and are using FA150 to shine a light on the seven million
players, 400,000 volunteers, 300,000 coaches and 27,000 referees we have
involved in football. "The UEFA Champions Festival is another opportunity to
talk about this and also to share UEFA's own strong commitment to the
grassroots. I am especially pleased that the women's game, futsal and
disability teams will all take centre stage over the four days."

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "We are delighted that the UEFA
Champions Festival is returning to London and especially that it will take
place on the International Quarter close to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park,
the scene of our biggest sporting moment. It will provide a fantastic
week-long family event and will revive the spirit of community and
celebration that made last year's Olympic Games so special."

Noble thrilled with winning return
WHUFC.com
West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble was happy to end the season on a high
22.05.2013

Mark Noble was delighted to mark his return to the starting line-up with a
win against Reading on Sunday. The 26-year-old midfielder underwent an
operation on a trapped nerve in the spring, but came back to make three
appearances from the bench before stepping back up to the first XI at the
weekend. The Hammers overcame relegated Reading 4-2 to end the Barclays
Premier League season on a high and secure tenth place in the table. Noble
told West Ham TV: "It was nice to be back playing. My arm felt fantastic and
I really enjoyed [the win] on Sunday. "We started really slowly in the
second half, but some of the football we played in the first half and
towards the end of the second was fantastic. "It was lovely to finish the
season off with a game like that - loads of goals, entertaining for the
crowd and it will mean we go away with loads of confidence."

Noble was involved from the off, clipping a first minute ball over to Andy
Carroll, which was only just out of the big Geordie's reach, then supplying
the pass for Kevin Nolan's second goal near the end. He added: "I think Andy
thought I was going to shoot, I lined up to do that but I saw him pull off
to the far stick, and if he had a size 14 foot instead of a size 12, he
would have scored! "For Nobby's second goal it was a nice bit of play, then
once I've put him through he doesn't miss those opportunities. It was nice
to go 3-2 up after the poor start we made to the second half, and then
finish it comfortably."

Nolan's hat-trick took him to ten goals for the season and Noble would like
to see more Hammers players reach that mark next term. He explained: "We've
not had too many high-scoring players this season, Nobby ended with ten,
Andy seven and me four. "Hopefully we can get a couple of players in double
figures next season, score a few more away from home and not rely on our
home form as much. Our form here has been fantastic this season and it's
been a pleasure to play in front of the Boleyn Ground crowd."

For Noble himself, he is looking forward to a brief period of relaxation
before kicking on again ahead of the 2013/14 campaign. He said: "I'll have
two or three weeks rest. then start working again looking forward to
pre-season, getting fit and then starting the Premier League again."

Doc completes charity run
WHUFC.com
West Ham United medical officer Dr Richard Weiler completed an amazing
30-mile run to work on Sunday
22.05.2013

West Ham United medical officer Dr Richard Weiler completed an amazing
30-mile run to work on Sunday. Dr Weiler left home at 6am before running
across London to the Boleyn Ground, arriving at 11.30am - well in time to
grab his medical bag ahead of the Barclays Premier League fixture with
Reading. The popular 'Doc' completed his solo jog for the charity Caudwell
Children, of which he is a trustee. Caudwell Children provide family support
services, equipment, treatment and therapies for disabled children and their
families across the UK. The charity also runs Enable Sport programme for
talented disabled athletes and Destination Dreams holiday for children
fighting life-threatening conditions. The father-of-three was joined for the
final few hundred metres of his run by his wife, children and Hammers
youngster Dylan Tombides, who inspired Dr Weiler to run to work during his
treatment after being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2011. Looking
remarkably fresh, Dr Weiler told West Ham TV of his pride and happiness at
completing such a feat, raising tens of thousands of pounds for a charity
close to his heart in the process. "I decided to do the run for Caudwell
Children, which is a great charity," he confirmed. "Dylan and I cooked up
the plan as he has been through a lot of challenges over the last couple of
years and we thought it was about time that I put my feet where my mouth was
and took up a challenge myself, so I decided to do it. "I'd not run a
marathon or a race before, so it was a heck of a long way, but it had to be
a challenge otherwise people would not have been inspired to sponsor me.
It's such a great cause, it really is, so I have to say 30 miles is a piece
of cake when you compare it to what Dylan has been through and the
challenges the kids at Caudwell Children face. "I took in a few sights
during my run. I went past Buckingham Palace and took a few photos on my
phone and then Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Nelson's Column, all
the way along the River Thames and then up towards the Olympic Park."

Dr Weiler said he hopes his run will inspire others to become more active
and lead healthier lifestyles - just as Caudwell Children does for the
youngsters who are helped by the charity. "I do a lot of work promoting
health, writing lots of papers and doing research. Everybody can get a
little taste of leading a healthy lifestyle. I'm not saying people should
run 30 miles, but just doing a bit of walking every day would be great. "The
charity is very close to my heart, supporting children with disabilities to
help get them mobility aids and specialist treatments that they cannot get
anywhere else. They also run a great programme called Destination Dreams for
children with terminal illnesses, looking after kids and their families and
taking them on very special holidays. "There are loads of other great things
that the charity does and hopefully West Ham fans will become more aware of
them as well."

Tombides, who met Dr Weiler at the Champions sculpture before completing the
walk to the Boleyn Ground with him, was full of praise for someone he knows
very well. The striker said: "The Doc made it look so easy. He didn't even
look like he was sweating at the end of it. He was so full of energy! It's
an unbelievable achievement and he told me he had to walk parts of it to
slow down! "I have spent a lot of time with the Doc over the last two years,
obviously not for the greatest of reasons, but nevertheless he is a
fantastic guy and what he did on Sunday just showed what he is all about.
"He went to a lot of effort that he didn't have to go to to raise money for
the charity, so it means a lot to me and my family."

Caudwell Children fundraising manager Nikki Samsa thanked Dr Weiler for his
effort in raising money that will make differences to the lives of many
youngsters. "It's fantastic for us. We are a national charity but with quite
a local feel so we help children throughout the UK. Richard's run will make
a difference to a lot of disabled children who are living in or on the
margins of poverty. It's a huge thing that he has done and it will make a
massive difference.
"It was astounding. Richard gives us a lot of support as a trustee, but for
him to get up as early as he did, run to work and then do a full day at West
Ham was amazing. He looked like he could have run another 30 miles. It was
phenomenal. "The money Richard has raised will truly change children's lives
across the UK. He will be providing therapy tricycles and wheelchairs for
children with autism that will change their lives beyond a doubt."

Carlton Cole to leave West Ham after seven seasons
BBC.co.uk

Striker Carlton Cole will leave West Ham United this summer after the club
decided not to renew his contract. The 29-year-old has spent seven seasons
at Upton Park but struggled for form in 2012-13, scoring only twice. Cole's
future at the club appeared in doubt as the club have agreed a fee to sign
Andy Carroll on a permanent deal. West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said:
"Carlton's need at his age is to be playing football as often as he can. We
felt it better he found pastures new."

Cole's West Ham years

Goals: 59
England caps: seven
Cole scored the opening goal in West Ham's Championship play-off final
victory over Blackpool in 2012.
2012-13 appearances/goals: 29/2

Cole, who has seven England caps, joined West Ham from Chelsea in 2006. His
last goal for the club was in a home defeat by Everton last December and he
indicated on Tuesday on Twitter that he would be looking for a new club. He
said: "Life is filled with ups and downs - today is a down but I'll be
back! Carlton Cole has left the building. "I came to east London not knowing
what to expect but I'm glad I did. The last 7 years I've met a lot of good
honest decent people. Thank you." His departure was confirmed on the club's
official website on Wednesday. West Ham's joint chairman David Gold
tweeted: "Good luck @CarltonCole1 - one of the nicest men I've ever met in
football." Meanwhile, the club have announced they are still in talks with
midfielder Gary O'Neil, 30, over a new deal. Allardyce said: "For Gary,
negotiations are ongoing and that will be done between the chairmen and his
agent now."

Andy Carroll could be out until August with heel injury
BBC.co.uk

Striker Andy Carroll could be out until the start of the new season with the
heel injury that forced him out of England's two post-season friendlies. The
24-year-old, who spent last season on loan at West Ham from Liverpool, fell
awkwardly in the Hammers' final game of the season. Although no surgery is
required Carroll could be out for at least three months. It is understood
the injury will not jeopardise Carroll's proposed move from Liverpool to
West Ham. The clubs agreed a fee in the region of £15m, but the Hammers' top
scorer has yet to decide whether he wants to join the east London club on a
permanent basis.
Carroll was signed by Kenny Dalglish from Newcastle and moved to Liverpool
on transfer deadline day in January 2011, for what remains a record fee for
a British player of £35m. The centre forward joins Liverpool's Steven
Gerrard and Arsenal's Jack Wilshere on the sidelines for England's matches
against the Republic of Ireland on 29 May and Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on 2
June.

West Ham owner David Sullivan eyes Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku
Last Updated: May 22, 2013 10:19am

Romelu Lukaku is a target for West Ham, with joint-owner David Sullivan
hoping to pair the striker with Andy Carroll. Chelsea's Belgium
international striker enjoyed an outstanding season-long loan at West Brom,
where he netted 17 goals to finish sixth in the Premier League top scorers'
chart. The Blues are expected to send the 20-year-old out on loan again for
the 2013/14 campaign, with Europa League debutants Swansea understood to be
leading the chase.
However, Hammers supremo Sullivan believes he can convince Lukaku to remain
in the capital and play at Upton Park alongside Carroll, who could be about
to secure a permanent £15million switch from Liverpool. Sullivan told the
Daily Mirror: "Lukaku would be a loan again. We'd maybe buy him a year later
if Chelsea decide they don't want him. "If we sign Andy, it would be a
record signing for the club. He and Romelu would be devastating. The best
strike-force outside of the top six or seven. "Lukaku has been amazing for
West Brom this season and I'd hope that he would prefer to live in London."
Having surprised many pundits by finishing in the top half of the table in
their first season back in the top-flight, Sullivan is now hoping the team
can push on under Sam Allardyce. "I am absolutely delighted with this
season," added Sullivan. "To be clear of relegation with three or four games
to go has been a lovely feeling.
"But we have another challenge ahead. Newcastle were fifth last year and yet
hovered above the relegation zone this time. There can never be any room for
complacency."

Newcastle not interested in re-signing Andy Carroll
Last Updated: May 22, 2013 5:03pm
SSN

Newcastle United say they have no interest in re-signing Andy Carroll,
according to Sky sources. West Ham had reportedly agreed a £15m fee with
Liverpool for the 24-year-old striker on Tuesday but reports claimed that
Newcastle were set to hijack the deal. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew last
week admitted he would be interested in signing Carroll "should he become
available", but the club have now denied any interest in the England man.
Carroll played the final match of his season-long loan from Anfield in the
Hammers' 4-2 Premier League win over Reading on Sunday. His seven goals,
including a late-season flurry, earned him a call-up to the latest England
squad but the giant striker was forced to pull out with a heel injury. The
Hammers have made little secret of their hopes of securing the services of
the Gateshead-born frontman on a permanent basis and West Ham boss Sam
Allardyce said keeping him at Upton Park was a priority. Carroll moved to
Liverpool from Newcastle in a £35million deal in January 2011, but struggled
to make his mark on Merseyside scoring just six Premier League goals for the
Reds in 44 games. They sold Carroll barely a month after Pardew's arrival on
Tyneside after Liverpool made them an offer they simply could not refuse,
but the striker struggled to make an impact on Merseyside and Kenny
Dalglish's untimely exit heralded a further downturn in his fortunes.

Pardew had no desire to let the player leave - indeed, he had repeatedly
insisted he would be going nowhere until the Reds broke the bank to get
their man - and whenever asked about a possible return, he has always
indicated his willingness to see the 6'3" powerhouse back in a black and
white shirt. When it became obvious that his short-term future lay away from
Anfield, Carroll was keen to return to familiar territory, but it was West
Ham who eventually managed to reach agreement, with the Reds simply
unwilling to deal with the club which had profited so substantially from
their initial investment.

Balazs Dzsudzsak's agent has stated that he could leave Dynamo Moscow,
amidst reports West Ham are interested. The Hungarian has been subject to
previous interest from Liverpool and Inter Milan, but reports in Russia
suggest that the Hammers have joined a number of Italian clubs in the hunt
for his signature. Dzsudzsak left Hungary in 2008 to join PSV Eindhoven, and
was sold to Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011. After just one year with the club, he
was signed by Dynamo. "Balazs is very comfortable in Moscow and would like
to perform for Dynamo," Jozsef Vorosbaranyi, the player's agent, told
Isvestia newspaper.
"However, Dzsudzsak also wants to try his hand at one of the top European
leagues. "I hope the leadership of Dynamo will consider proposals."

West Ham make a bid for AC Milan's Massimo Ambrosini, claims agent
By Simone Bargellini. Last Updated: May 22, 2013 3:31pm

The agent of Massimo Ambrosini has revealed that West Ham have made a bid
for the AC Milan midfielder. There had been rumours that Moreno Roggi,
Ambrosini's agent, had been in London to have talks with the club, a story
which Roggi denied. He did however claim that West Ham had made an offer to
the player, and that a club in the MLS had done the same. "It's true I was
in London, but not to talk about the Massimo's future," Roggi told
calciomercato.it.
"I confirm there are offers from West Ham and Major League Soccer for him,
but the situation is in stand-by. "Like every year, Massimo will first
discuss his future with AC Milan, so you have to wait again to have news."
Ambrosini has been at AC Milan since 1995, making almost 350 Serie A
appearances.

Keep or Sell? - The Defence
By Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die

Jussi Jaaskelainen - 93.5% KEEP

I think everyone agrees Jussi has had a good season. Those of us who doubted
him, mainly because of his age, were proved comprehensively wrong. He got
better and better as the season wore on, and it is hardly surprising that
only 6.5% of you want rid. To my mind, though, we do need to sign a top
class goalkeeper this summer. Jussi would be a brilliant backup, but let's
set our sights on signing a good, young, British keeper. Preferably one
whose name is not Alex McCarthy.

Winston Reid 99.9 KEEP

I would love to know the identity of the one person who prevented Winston
Reid from scoring a 100% clean sweep. The fact that Winston Reid signed a
contract extension to 2015 says a lot about what he thinks the club can
achieve, but we can expect bids to come in for him this summer. Already
today we hear rumours that Arsenal want to sign him. Let's hope there are no
escape clauses in his contract. We all remember his first few matches when
he barely looked good enough for a Conference side's reserve team. It just
goes to show what can be achieved with a little patience.

George McCartney 60% SELL

I'm slightly surprised that the majority of people want to be rid of George
McCartney. To me, he is the kind of player every team needs - a good all
rounder who can play in several positions. He's never let us down, although
he does get injured rather too much. With the arrived of Mr Rat, I suspect
his opportunities will now be rather limited and he may well decide that his
future lies elsewhere. If I were the manager of one of the promoted sides,
he'd certainly be on my list of players to sign. Of course, we also have
Joey O'Brien who can play at left back, and the very promising Daniel Potts.
I hope Dan is told by Sam Allardyce that he will be first choice cover for
Razvan Rat.

James Tomkins 96.5% KEEP

James Tomkins has had a bit of an off season. Injury kept him out and he
then never managed to displace Winston Reid or James Collins. Given the form
they were in, that is hardly surprising. None of us want to see him go. I
see him as a future England international and would move heaven and earth to
keep him at the club. But I wonder whether his head might be turned as he
will surely understand that Reid and Collins will start next season as the
first choice centre backs. But both are prone to injury, so maybe his time
will come.

Joey O'Brien 85.6% KEEP

Bearing in mind he came on a free transfer and also bearing in mind his
injury history, Joey O'Brien has been a great signing by Sam Allardyce. He's
not a flamboyant player but he really has been Mr Reliable this season,
often playing out of position at left back, rather than his preferred right
back position. Next season, it will be interesting to see whether he or Guy
Demel start as first choice right back.

James Collins 98.6% KEEP

An absolute stormer of a season. At the beginning he was responsible for
giving away a couple of goals, either by bad luck or bad judgement, but
since then he has performed miracles. The timing of his challenges and
headed clearances has been perfect and his understand with Winston Reid has
been a joy to watch. David Sullivan reckons we would never have been
relegated if he hadn't been sold, and he's probably right. He's in the form
of his life.

Guy Demel 79.3% KEEP

After a sticky start Guy Demel has really established himself as first
choice right back. He's a big guy for a full back and his rampaging
attacking runs have something of a blunderbuss appearance. But he is skilful
as well as very strong and has developed an ability to get to the touchline
and put in a dangerous cross. He can be caught out of position on occasion,
but his experience usually rescues him. I wouldn't want to sell him,
although I can imagine Sam might well be looking at signing a new defender
who could play at centre half and right back, especially if James Tomkins
were to be sold.

C'mon Carroll
By SHAUN CUSTIS Published: 22nd May 2013
The Sun

ANDY CARROLL has been told to hurry up and make up his mind by West Ham.
Liverpool have agreed to sell the England striker to the Hammers for
£15million. But Carroll has been waiting to see if there are offers from
bigger clubs. Ideally he wants to return to Liverpool. But the Anfield club
have decided to cut their losses on the player they bought for £35m from
Newcastle in 2011. Toon have ruled out taking the Geordie back while Spurs,
who were showing interest, have not made any move. West Ham boss Sam
Allardyce wants an answer within the week. Meanwhjle, new left-back Razvan
Rat has vowed to turn West Ham into Euro contenders. The Romania captain,
31, turned his back on the Champions League by leaving Shakhtar Donetsk. He
said: "We can get into Europe."
