Are the Board Split on the Managerial Appointment?
May 31st, 2011 - 2:56 am by S J Chandos
West Ham Till I Die

A steady flow of media reports have consistently asserted that Sam Allardyce
will be appointed to the Hammers managerial vacancy this week. This view
appears to be reinforced by comments from Allardyce himself, who has
confirmed that he will take up the post after a short family holiday.
Whilst, in contrast, the silence from the club is noteworthy.

Yet, there is also a recent report, in the Sunday Express, that suggests
that the board are actually split on the appointment. It has been reported
that David Sullivan favours, the newly sacked Cardiff City manager, Dave
Jones, David Gold strongly supports Allardyce's appointment and Karen Brady
wants another, improved offer to try to secure Martin O'Neill's services.
If this is true then it would appear that Allardyce is the compromise
candidate, around which the whole board will unite.

Negotiations with Sam Allardyce are certainly at an advanced stage and,
barring a sudden, dramatic twist, it appears that he will be appointed.
Negotiations have apparently progressed well and it has been suggested that
in addition to a c.£1m annual salary, and further c£1m bonus for achieving
promotion, Allardyce has also secured agreement on apppointing his chosen
N0. 2 and back room staff. We can only speculate what the consequences of
this will be for the likes of Kevin Keen ad Steve Lomas?

There was almost universal agreement that this appointment was a key
decision and that it was vital that the board got it right. Otherwise,
there could be dire consequences for the future of the club. In appointing
Allardyce, the rationale of the board is presumably that he is the best bet
to achieve automatic promotion next season and stay in the PL thereafter.
In doing so, they are obviously prepared to resist the inevitable supporter
backlash that will follow. If they are wise, they will have made it clear
to Allardyce that fans expectations at West Ham are different to those he
may have experienced at Bolton and Blackburn. As such, as well as bringing
discipline, organisation, hard work and high tech methods to the table, his
West Ham team will also have to play a passing, attacking game.

Certainly, if as been suggested, Sam Allardyce wishes to use the West Ham
post as a platform to strengthen his case as a possible successor to Fabio
Capello, as England Coach, he needs to demonstrate to the FA that he can
build a team with tactical sophistication and flair, as well as organisation
and graft. Who knows it could all work out rather neatly if Allardyce meets
expectations and then moves on to boss the national team. Especially, if
the great entertainer, Paulo Di Canio, has successfuly served his
apprenticeship at Swindon Town by that time.

Personally, find it difficult to accept this appointment. I would have
preferred Chris Hughton or, the highly promising, Paul Lambert. But we are
where we find ourselves and, after the disasterous season we have just had,
I recognise that strong leadership is required to put the serious problems
right and secure promotion in a single season. Regardless, I will be there
next season (home and away). West Ham are my club and the appointment of
Sam Allardyce will not change that one jot! If I do not like developments
at the club and the footballing fayre served up then I will make my
opposition clear at Upton Park, on WHTID and through other appropriate
channels and platforms. And I would strongly urge my fellow supporters to
do likewise.

I may currently be an unhappy and apprehsensive Hammer, but I remain an
Hammer all the same and will always continue to be so. COYI!

SJ. Chandos.

Toon set to raise the Ba

The Sun

NEWCASTLE look set to beat Sunderland and Everton in the race to sign
wantaway West Ham striker Demba Ba. Ba, 26, is ready to quit Upton Park on a
free after the Hammers' relegation to the Championship. And his availability
has sparked a scramble for his signature among Premier League clubs. But
Newcastle, still seeking a replacement for Andy Carroll, head the chasing
pack for the Sengalese star who hit seven goals for West Ham since joining
from Hoffenheim in January. Toon boss Alan Pardew will be able to dwarf any
West Ham terms and offer top-flight football.

WEST HAM striker Freddie Sears has pledged his future to the club despite
their relegation to the Championship. Sears, 21, managed to fight his way
back into the first team last term after a loan spell at Scunthorpe. And the
England Under-21 star said: "As a West Ham fan, I want to stay and play for
the club. "Hopefully we can keep a good core of players together here and
have a real go next season."

QPR, Norwich and West Ham target will leave Posh, says Fergie Jnr
Published 11:15 30/05/11 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Darren Ferguson is resigned to losing promotion hero Craig Mackail-Smith
after the striker played a key role in Peterborough's 3-0 npower League One
play-off final win over Huddersfield yesterday. Ferguson steered Posh to
their third promotion in four seasons with a comprehensive victory at Old
Trafford after late goals from Tommy Rowe, Mackail-Smith and skipper Grant
McCann. Yet Mackail-Smith, 27, looks set to leave London Road this summer
after hitting his 35th goal of the season, with Barclays Premier League new
boys QPR and Norwich and relegated West Ham all thought to be interested. A
switch to the big time would cap a remarkable rise for the highly-rated
frontman, who made his international debut for Scotland in March, just four
years after he was turning out in the Conference for Dagenham.

Ferguson said: "You would have to say the odds are stacked with him probably
leaving. "We would have to get the right money for him but everyone would
wish him all the best. "He's earned the chance to go and play at a higher
level. "We need other players and we have to try and establish ourselves in
the Championship now."

Ba linked with Hammers exit

Guardian Series

WEST HAM striker Demba Ba is being targeted by Everton boss David Moyes,
according to reports. The Daily Mirror claims Moyes is an admirer of the
Hammers hitman, but the wage demands of the Senegalese player could prove a
major stumbling block. It is understood Ba will demand a sizeable signing-on
fee and top-end wages should the Toffees come in for him, as he looks set to
depart the relegated Irons this summer. Newcastle and Sunderland are also
thought to be interested in the striker.

'Young players will get a chance'
WHUFC.com
Academy Director Tony Carr says competition to sign promising youngsters is
getting more intense
30.05.2011

Academy Director Tony Carr has told supporters of the huge competition West
Ham United face to sign the brightest young footballers. Speaking to fans at
the inaugural Supporter Advisory Forum, Carr explained how the club's
Academy scouts watch thousands of schoolchildren in the hope of unearthing
the next Mark Noble, James Tomkins or Jordan Spence. However, with Arsenal,
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also on the hunt for the best young players
from across London and the South East, the Academy Director conceded that it
was getting harder and harder to attract the cream of the crop to join the
Hammers. "We have got three guys who work on our pre-Academy recruitment
programme," he said during a wide-ranging interview available to view on
West Ham TV. "Each guy has an area and has to cover each school in his
area. Over a term, we may see 10,000 kids from the ages of six to eight
years of age, where really the talent spotting begins.

"People might ask 'How do spot the talent in a six or eight-year-old?' but
if you get a group together and have a little game of five-a-side football,
then you will certainly see the talent and see the ones who are a little bit
better than all the rest. "At that age, that's all you do - see the ones who
have got a natural talent or gift or have a little idea of the game. We then
invite them to our twice-a-week pre-Academy training nights in the sports
hall at Chadwell Heath where we just have fun, play games and let them enjoy
it. "Hopefully, over a year or two, we start to filter that and mould the
group into our Under-9 team. It sounds very simplistic, but it's a little
bit harder than that, I can assure you."

Carr also explained how Academy rules meant competition for the best young
players was becoming more and more intense. While the club were able to
recruit the likes of Northumberland-based Michael Carrick in the past, the
regulations mean the capital's big clubs are essentially fighting to sign
the same players. As a result, Carr said clubs like West Ham are being
forced to move for youngsters earlier and earlier to ensure they do not miss
out. "The rules are that you can only recruit from within one hour
travelling time from your training base. As you can imagine, we cross over
Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea's territory, and they will cross into ours,
so the competition for the local talent at that young age is absolutely
massive. "So, the idea is to try to spot them first and that's the best
thing. However, if we do spot them first, then in a short space of time, our
big rivals are going to be major competition to us. "We have to sell the
club the best way we can, by showing them our record of young players
playing in the first team is very good. They will get a chance at our club.
We have always had a manager and Board who believe in young
players.Supporters also have that affinity with players out on the pitch.
"We have to sell the club and, in the main, we have been reasonably
successful."

championship then gets under way for Mexico against El Salvador in

Allardyce ready for Hammers
Former Blackburn boss expected to take charge at Upton Park
Last Updated: May 30, 2011 10:35am
SSN

Sam Allardyce has confirmed he is looking forward to taking charge at West
Ham United and trying to help lead the club back into the Premier League.
Skysports.com revealed over the weekend that Allardyce had emerged as the
leading contender to replace Avram Grant at Upton Park. Grant was dismissed
by the Hammers earlier this month after a 3-2 defeat at Wigan Athletic
condemned the club to relegation to the Championship. The likes of Dave
Jones and Steve McClaren had been linked with the position, but it appears
Allardyce is now primed to succeed Grant. Allardyce has been out of
management since being dismissed by Blackburn Rovers in December following
the Venky's takeover at Ewood Park. He is aware of the challenge ahead, with
West Ham expected to lose several key players over the summer, but is
determined to make an impact. "Everything has been agreed in principle and I
look forward to taking charge after I have had a family holiday," said
Allardyce in The People. "It's always difficult dealing with the aftermath
of relegation, but I want to get West Ham back into the Premier League as
quickly as possible."

Allardyce: a Bolton fan speaks
KUMB.com
Filed: Monday, 30th May 2011
By: Staff Writer

With Sam Allardyce set to be confirmed as West Ham United's 14th full-time
manager, we decided to take the opportunity to examine some of the more
obvious fears regarding the former Bolton manager's tactical approach to the
game.

We asked KUMB.com member Troughie, a Bolton fan who watched his team finish
in the top eight of the Premier League on four successive occasions under
Allardyce for his thoughts. This is what he had to say...

"I can't help thinking that some of you are missing the point. Allardyce's
success at Bolton was not down to playing long ball football. It was the way
midfield was organised that was key.

It wasn't about bullying, or being 'physical', but denying the opposition
space to play. Every player knew his job and they bought into what he wanted
- excellent man manager that he is. Kevin Davies gets a lot of stick, but he
sacrificed his natural game to give the boss what he required.

We were quite happy to let the likes of Spurs mess about with the ball on
the half way line, but once they got into the final third there was nowhere
for them to go. We beat them in the league six times on the bounce. Fancy a
bit of that? Or how about Arsenal being so demoralised they were done before
a ball was kicked?

Although I have read some some interesting points here on KUMB they are
those of an outsider, without a real understanding of my club. The debt
position was stable when Allardyce left - it's only deteriorated since.
True, he left a small and aging squad, but that was down to a chairman who
thought that Sam could continue to work miracles on a miniscule transfer
budget.

As for not shooting outside the box? That was a joke by Kevin Nolan, that
got picked up by the press and manipulated.

Sam, a short term manager? Seven straight seasons in the Premier League,
four consecutive top eight finishes, two seasons out of three qualifying for
Europe. I reckon you'd like some of that short term stuff. He was also
responsible for getting the new academy facilities built. Not that there has
been much return for that so far, but the investment has been made.

Neither the fans, players or the owner at Newcastle got what Sam is about,
but he still left with them in a higher position than they'd finished the
previous season.

West Ham fans may witter on all they want about 'the West Ham Way' but the
only time I've seen you play passing football at the Reebok was under
Gianfranco Zola in his first season. You still got beat (although on that
day I'm still not sure how.)

The question is, will Sam want to come to West Ham? Thanks to Newcastle he
doesn't need to work again. He'll want a big backroom staff and a long term
commitment. If he does, he'll get you promoted. He did with us, winning
fifteen games away from home on the way.

Some Bolton supporters are jaundiced against Allardyce because of the way he
left. He's not the nicest man and he has a giant ego. But that shouldn't
detract from the extraordinary job he did at the Reebok."

Sears pledges his future to West Ham
TeamTalk
By Marc Isaacs
Monday, May 30

West Ham striker Freddie Sears has pledged his future to the club despite
their relegation to the Championship. The 21-year-old has managed to fight
his way back into the first-team after being shipped out on loan to Crystal
Palace, Coventry and Scunthorpe. The England Under-21 forward is well aware
the club could lose big names like Scott Parker, Matthew Upson and Robert
Green, but he is determined not to leave a sinking ship and hopes the new
manager will give him a chance to fulfil his potential at Upton Park next
season. Sears said: "I have expressed that I want to stay next season. As a
West Ham fan I want to play for the club and relegation might give me a
better opportunity to play week in, week out. There is probably more of an
opportunity in the Championship than the Premiership. "It could go one of
two ways. I could play every game of the season or the new manager could
come in and bring in new players. But hopefully we can keep some of the
young boys and have a real go next year. "We should try to keep as many
players as we can, but it's going to be hard. The more senior players will
probably move on, but hopefully we can keep a good core of players and have
a real go next season."

Daily WHUFC News -Manager Update

Manager Update!
http://weloveyouwestham.blogspot.com

According to KUMB, Sam Allardyce has accepted the job and now we are waiting
on Martin O'Neil's decision. O'Neil who is apparently on top of managers
list, will decide by Monday if he wants the job or not. If not we can expect
Big Fat Sam's confirmation on the official site by midweek.

Regardless if you hate our owners or love them, if this news it true, you
can't fault their efforts in trying to find the best man for the job. I
think some fans have forgotten the fact that we have been relegated and not
many top managers want to be in the championship. If it was either Allardyce
or O'Neil, it would be a huge lift for our club.

People keep on blurting on about West Ham's traditional football, when was
the last time we have actually played this traditional football? The last
time we showed it was when Harry was in charge....He left 10 years ago for
christ sake! I can't understand why people keep on going on about 'boring
football' either. For the last 2 seasons we have been playing 'losing
football.'

Who ever is decided to our 14th manager, lets just give them our backing and
cheer the team on like we always do. COYI!!!

West Ham United Ladies U16s will fly the flag at the UEFA Champions League
final
28.05.2011

Eight players from West Ham United Ladies Under-16 squad will enjoy the
evening of a lifetime at tonight's UEFA Champions League final. The girls -
Charlotte Stephens, Naomi Hayes, Nicole Learner, Sophie McLean, Jess Chater,
Megan Lewis, Eliz Ibrahim and Claire Huggins - will be on the Wembley pitch
ahead of Manchester United's clash with FC Barcelona after winning the Ford
Champions Youth Football Tournament. The U16s will join boys from Team Ryan
FC in waving the official UEFA Champions League starball banner in the
centre circle after both clubs won their respective five-a-side competitions
at Dagenham & Redbridge FC on 7 May. The tournament saw West Ham brush off
the challenge of a host of local teams and schools before reaching the final
by winning a tense penalty shootout. There, the Hammers defeated Redbridge
2-1 to secure the trophy and their trip to Wembley. Victory completed a
successful season for the U16s, who are coached by Carla Dickinson and
finished as runners-up to Tottenham Hotspur in the Essex County League. The
two sides also meet in the League Cup final this afternoon. Mark Simpson,
Ford of Britain marketing director, congratulated the girls on their
achievements. He said: "After 19 years, Ford remains extremely proud to be
an official partner of the UEFA Champions League. This year, Ford is
celebrating its centenary year and is delighted to be providing two youth
teams from local Dagenham this amazing opportunity. "We send our
congratulations to Team Ryan FC and West Ham Under-16 girls and wish them
well for their important role in the opening ceremony of European football's
most prestigious match."

Jack and Gabbs play

A successful comeback by Jack Collison was completed with his return to the
Wales fold

Jack Collison made his long-awaited return to international duty in helping
Wales to beat Northern Ireland in Dublin on Friday night. The Hammers No10
played 62 minutes after starting alongside club-mate Danny Gabbidon in
Dublin's virtually empty Aviva Stadium. Collison grew in stature as the game
wore on and was particularly lively in linking up with former Hammers
forward Craig Bellamy. Wales won with goals from Aaron Ramsey and Robert
Earnshaw, but needed Gabbidon to be alert on a couple of occasions. The
long-serving centre-back was winning his first cap for the Principality
since November 2009, having agreed to come out of international retirement
for new manager Gary Speed. Collison finished the season strongly for club
and country after 14 months out with a serious knee injury. He will return
for duty with the rest of the Hammers squad in early July raring to go for
the new campaign.

West Ham close to naming new manager to replace Grant
Page last updated at 12:11 GMT, Saturday, 28 May 2011 13:11 UK

West Ham hope to appoint their new manager by the end of next week, BBC
Sport understands. Reports suggest former Blackburn, Newcastle and Bolton
boss Sam Allardyce is in the frame to succeed Avram Grant. West Ham sacked
Israeli Grant after they were relegated from the Premier League with one
game remaining.
Caretaker manager Kevin Keen, who took charge for that game, a 3-0 home
defeat by Sunderland, has stated his desire to lead the Hammers in the
Championship.
However, Keen has no formal managerial experience, apart from looking after
West Ham's reserve team. Allardyce was surprisingly sacked from his role as
Blackburn manager in December after three defeats in five games, with Rovers
13th in the Premier League, five points above the relegation zone. The
Lancashire club slipped deeper into the relegation battle following
Allardyce's exit and only guaranteed another season in the top flight by
beating Wolves 3-2 at Molineux on the final day of the season. Other
managers who have been linked with the vacant post include Chris Hughton and
Paul Lambert.

Allardyce accepts offer

Sam Allardyce is set to be installed as West Ham United's fourteenth
full-time manager later this week. The 56-year-old spent the last 48 hours
mulling over the offer before finally agreeing to become the man to replace
Avram Grant. According to the People, Allardyce, speaking late last night
(Saturday) said: "Everything has been agreed in principle and I look forward
to taking charge after I have had a family holiday. "It's always difficult
dealing with the aftermath of relegation, but I want to get West Ham back
into the Premier League as quickly as possible."

Whilst Allardyce may have accepted West Ham's offer, the situation regarding
fellow candidate Martin O'Neill remains unclear. Some sources have
suggested that the former Aston Villa boss - who is also understood to have
been offered the job and is said to be the board's number one choice - would
confirm his decision on Monday.
Either way an official announcement with regards to the identity of the new
manager is not expected to be made until midweek, at the earliest.

Supporters' Advisory Board: in summary
KUMB.com
Filed: Friday, 27th May 2011
By: Phillip Marlowe

The West Ham United Supportor's Advisory Board held their inaugural meeting
at the Boleyn Ground last night. Here follows a brief rundown of the main
points discussed.

The SAB

It was confirmed that the advisory board would meet quarterly and will be
split into four focus groups. Attendees were asked to nominate on a
preference basis what areas they were most interested in.

1. Matchday experience - covering hotdogs to half time entertainment
2. Olympic Stadium - what the fans want there; travel, food, seating
arrangements
3. Replica kit/merchandise - merchandise/programme content.
4. Commerical: packages in relation to the Boleyn Ground and Olympic
Stadium.

The vacant managerial position

David Sullivan advised the meeting that he had offered the job to one person
at £1.25m per annum plus the same again in bonus payments - and been turned
down.

He had met someone else who the entire board were happy with (and he
reckoned the fans would be as well) but he thought the candidate would turn
us down.

Squad/contracts

One player has been offered a wage that would be double the wage of the next
highest paid player in the Npower to 'renew'. This is thought to be either
Demba Ba or Thomas Hitzlsperger.

Zavon Hines has turned down the offer of a new contract.

Jordan Spence won't sign a new contract until he knows a). who the manager
will be and b). that he will get a chance to play on a regular basis.

The Olympic Stadium

The vast majority of feedback sought was related to Stratford. It seems
crystal clear that it is their main are of interest. We will not act as
promoters for non-football events, we will act effectively as a landlord,
renting out the stadium.

Ian Tompkins stated categorically: "To the inch, the distance from the front
of the upper tier on the halfway line at Stratford is the same distance to
the centre circle as it is from the mid-tier at Wembley".

The judicial review is not holding anything up at all.

The timetable is for the stadium to be ready by April 2014. The Boleyn
Ground is up for sale - potentially to be sold as mixed retail/housing.

One of the questions asked by our hosts was: "How far would you be prepared
to walk to the stadium?" My inclination is that there may be an issue with
pedestrian routes onto the Olympic Stadium island - they clearly want people
to come on the train.

There are only 200 car parking spaces at the new stadium. The club are
negotiating to try and retain the multi-story at the top end of the site.
The 5,000 spaces at Westfields shopping centre were not mentioned, but it
seems we won't be encouraged to use them.

There was no word on whether there will be a walkway on matchdays between
the car park and the stadium.

Reduced-cost tickets

The issue concerning selling cheap tickets for less than the equivalent
season ticket price was virtually glossed over - we were not given an
opportunity to ask any probing questions on this.

However there were a number of comments regarding rewarding season ticket
holder loyalty; I think Mr Sullivan and Ms Brady may have got the message
that selling cheap tickets to fill the ground has annoyed many people.

Replica Kit

The new away shirt was shown - apparently it's top secret. It won't fit me.

Karren Brady

Ms Brady said little apart from 'goodbye, thanks for coming'. She looked
fairly disinterested throughout; both her and Sullivan ducked out after
about an hour.

Tony Carr

Tony said he was happy in his current job. He looked slightly embarassed,
which is understandable, but he was good value as you would expect. With
regards to bright young things, he didn't want to name any lads in
particular so as not to heap pressure on them but explained the process of
player development.

Conclusion

Many people clearly felt the SAB is a worthwhile concept although few seemed
to appreciate it is a requirement for a UEFA licence. I think some basic
things will be acted upon as a consequence.

Big Sam leading Hammers race
Allardyce leading contender to take over in East London
Last Updated: May 28, 2011 11:43am
SSN

Skysports.com understands that West Ham are in talks with Sam Allardyce over
the vacant managerial post at Upton Park. The former Blackburn boss has been
linked with the Hammers role since Avram Grant was sacked by the club
following their relegation from the Premier League earlier this month.
Allardyce was shown the door at Ewood Park by new Rovers owners Venky's in
December last year and has not managed since. But the 56-year-old has now
emerged as the leading contender to take over at West Ham and be handed the
task of leading the East Londoners back to the top-flight. Hammers co-owners
David Sullivan and David Gold are thought to have already held negotiations
with Allardyce over taking up the role. His experience is likely to have
attracted him to the club, with the former defender having previously
managed at Bolton and Newcastle in the Premier League. Allardyce has been
installed as the bookies' favourite to take the Upton Park post, with
Cardiff boss Dave Jones and former Aston Villa tactician Martin O'Neill also
reportedly in the frame.

Allardyce agrees Hammers deal

The Mirror

Sam Allardyce last night confirmed he'll take charge of West Ham this week –
with a £1million incentive to win promotion back to the Premier League at
the first attempt. Allardyce held talks with Upton Park owners David Gold
and David Sullivan last week and a £1.5m-a-year deal was agreed, with a £1m
bonus payable if he wins promotion. Lawyers acting for both sides are
currently drawing up contracts and Allardyce said last night: "Everything
has been agreed in principle and I look forward to taking charge after I
have had a family holiday."

Newcastle join race to sign West Ham star Demba Ba
Metro.co.uk

Demba Ba has emerged as a target for Newcastle United after it was revealed
he can leave West Ham on a free transfer. The Senegalese striker only joined
the Hammers from Hoffenheim in January, but it is believed a clause in his
contract allows him to leave for nothing in the wake of the club's
relegation. Sunderland were reported to be leading the race for Ba's
signature, as Steve Bruce searches for a replacement for Darren Bent, while
Everton are also said to be considering offering him a deal. According to
the Daily Mirror, Newcastle have now joined the race for the 26-year-old.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew has money to spend following Andy Carroll's £35
million move to Liverpool, but knows he needs to bring in a number of
players if the club are to build on their impressive first season back in
the top-flight. New strikers are his priority and the chance to sign a
player who has scored seven times in 12 Premier League games on a free
transfer could prove too tempting to turn down for Pardew. He also has an
interest in Lorient's Kevin Gameiro and Lille's Gervinho, but they would
cost more than £10 million apiece.

SAM ALLARDYCE IN WEST HAM HOT-SEAT
Saturday May 28,2011
By John Dillon
Daily Express

SAM ALLARDYCE will be the new boss of relegated West Ham after agreeing last
night to try to save them from an Olympic Stadium meltdown. Allardyce,
sacked by Blackburn last December, could land a £1.25million bonus if he
gets the Hammers back into the Premier League at the first attempt. It is
vital the club win back their top-flight status with the move into the
massive London Games arena due in 2014. Otherwise, the club, which owes at
least £100m following the disastrous regime of their previous Icelandic
owners, could be threatened with bankruptcy. Allardyce is seen as a
hard-headed and experienced boss who can quickly sort out the problems at
West Ham. It is believed Allardyce has agreed a three-year package. He is
sure to have demanded guarantees about bringing in his coaching staff and,
in particular, about the signing of new players, with agent Barry Silkman
having been very influential at Upton Park since the club's takeover by
David Sullivan and David Gold.

IS SAM ALLARDYCE THE RIGHT MAN FOR WEST HAM?
Sunday May 29,2011
By Colin Mafham
Daily Express

WEST Ham were last night plunged into fresh turmoil over the potential
appointment of Sam Allardyce as their new manager. Owners David Sullivan and
David Gold and managing director Karren Brady are believed to be still split
over who should get the job. Sullivan is understood to prefer Cardiff's Dave
Jones, Gold is backing Allardyce and Ms Brady is understood to favour a
second bid to land Martin O'Neill. As a result they are facing a revolt from
fans over Allardyce whose controversial long-ball tactics are seen to be
alien to everything the East Enders are famous for. Either Jones or O'Neill
would be the people's choice. As O'Neill turned West Ham down in January
that would appear to clear the way for Jones, who has performed miracles at
Cardiff on a shoestring budget and who favours a style of football the
supporters would prefer to see at Upton Park next season. Jones is
considering his long-term future after Cardiff's loss to Reading in this
year's Championship play-off semi-finals.

Sam Allardyce the new man at West Ham after turning down Middle East offer
By BOB CASS
Last updated at 4:20 AM on 29th May 2011
Daily Mail

West Ham will appoint Sam Allardyce as their new manager on Monday after
changing the 56-year-old former Blackburn Rovers boss's mind about turning
his back on English football management. Allardyce had considered either
retirement or taking up a lucrative offer to coach in the oil-rich Middle
East, after he was sacked by Blackburn's new India-based owners last
December. He was succeeded by his former coach Steve Kean, who took over
with the club in a healthy mid-table position, but only succeeded in
averting the threat of Premier League relegation on the last day of the
season. Allardyce's track record of building success with comparatively
shoestring resources made him an ideal target for David Sullivan and David
Gold. While candidates such as Cardiff City's Dave Jones and former England
coach Steve McClaren were widely tipped to succeed Avram Grant, the Hammers'
joint owners held secret talks with Allardyce, who finally agreed to take
over at Upton Park on Sunday. Allardyce will accept a £1.25million-a-year
deal and his first priority will be to persuade the likes of Footballer of
the Year Scott Parker and strikers Carlton Cole and Demba Ba that they have
a future in east London.

Tony Pulis set to lure £3.5m Carlton Cole from West Ham with a ticket to
Europe
By JOE BERNSTEIN
Last updated at 4:24 AM on 29th May 2011
Daily Mail

Stoke City are to test West Ham's resolve to keep Carlton Cole with a
£3.5million move to take him from the Championship into Europe. Manager
Tony Pulis has been a long-time admirer of Cole and has not been put off by
the 27-year-old's disappointing form during West Ham's relegation season.
The England striker scored only five Premier League goals and failed to find
the net after February but Pulis, who has helped turn around the careers of
players like Jermaine Pennant and Matthew Etherington, believes he can do
the same for Cole, whose pace and power would be a huge asset at the
Britannia Stadium. West Ham are looking to cut costs after dropping out of
the Premier League with Rob Green and Scott Parker set to leave with Cole.
Two more of their England internationals, Matthew Upson and Kieron Dyer,
have been released. Pulis will look to boost his squad this summer with the
club's run to the FA Cup final earning them a Europa League place. A
striker is top of his priority following his decision not to sign John Carew
on a permanent basis following his loan spell from Aston Villa.

Daily WHUFC News - 28th May 2011

Supporter Advisory Board launched
WHUFC.com
David Sullivan and Karren Brady were present for the first meeting of the
club's new fan initiative
27.05.2011

More than 100 fans took part in the successful inaugural session of the
club's Supporter Advisory Board on Thursday night. Joint-Chairman David
Sullivan was in attendance in the Legends Lounge at the Boleyn Ground to
hear an open and honest exchange of views with the invited panel, who will
go on to consult and inform on key issues concerning West Ham United. The
aim is to increase communication at a crucial stage in the history of the
club. Thanking everyone for taking part and offering their time,
Vice-Chairman Karren Brady said the panel had complete Board support and was
all about the importance of listening to what fans had to say on all areas
of the club. After presentations including an update on the Olympic Stadium,
the gathered guests were invited to air their views on specific areas such
as matchday experience and retail. After a number of submitted questions
from the floor, the Chairman began the evening with an update on the
managerial situation and also dealt with squad matters for the new season.
Mindful of the ongoing process, he said: "The selection of the manager is of
critical importance. We are spending a lot of time on it but we have a
little bit of time to make a decision. "As you go down the list there are
pros and cons with a lot of people and we are looking for someone with a
proven track record in the Championship or higher or in the Premier League
who wants to come to us."

The Chairman said the club were hoping to appoint a British manager and that
key first-team decisions would not be made until an appointment was made -
save for contract negotiations that were open now. He added the 2011/12
Hammers would have "a core of homegrown players" and that funds would be
available for several signings to supplement them.

The fans who had signed up to be present on the evening had to be
recommended by five season ticket holders or members. With the aim to ensure
they represent the core fan base of the club. As such, the Board contained a
wide cross-section of supporters, from season ticket holders to corporate
members, corporate clients and Bondholders. On the night, fans came from far
and wide - one even flew in from Madrid to be involved. New Board member
Craig Hughes welcomed the opportunity to play a part in the club's future,
saying: "The Advisory Board is a fantastic platform to express our ideas and
opinions on matters that affect the club we all love. Every fan has their
own ideas and through this board we can advise the management on what real
fans think."

Fellow member Rachel Beagles shared those sentiments, adding: "Fans
typically complain that the management don't care. The Supporter Advisory
Board should represent an opportunity to ensure that the views of fans are
heard and that the matchday experience is improved for all."

Meetings will take place four times per year, while the club will also
contact the Board whenever they want to harness their opinion on important
issues.
The inaugural Supporter Advisory Board will consist of the following
members: Steve Burton, Dave Tate, Michael Crowhurst, Christopher Maslin, Sue
Hudson, Benjamin Lanyado, Paul Gibson, Graham Hatt, Tom Dowsett, Paul Fox,
Iain Dale, David Halston, Amanda Ross, Howard Skolnick, Marcus Clement,

Dev calls for commitment
WHUFC.com
Alan Devonshire believes hard work is a must if West Ham United are to
regain their top-flight status
27.05.2011

Alan Devonshire believes instilling a positive attitude in the West Ham
United squad will be the main task for the club's new manager. The Hammers
are currently searching for the man to take the club forward and Devonshire,
who was appointed as manager of Blue Square Bet Premier new-boys Braintree
Town this week, knows the making the right appointment will be vital to the
club's future. Having endured two difficult seasons and been relegated to
from the Barclays Premier League, the former West Ham and England midfielder
has told West Ham TV that a change in mindset is needed if the Hammers are
to bounce back and be promoted at the first attempt. "When I played, you
trained as you played so it [working hard] became a habit. If you needed a
kick up the backside you got it, or if you needed an arm around you then you
got it. "I worked under good managers like John Lyall and bad managers and,
at the end of the day, they have to pick the best things.
"Man managing the players is the main thing. You've got to get inside their
heads and work out what makes them tick, do the right things for them to get
them out on the pitch in the right frame of mind. "I'm distraught about it,
to be honest."

Devonshire himself suffered the disappointment of relegation in 1977/78 and,
more than 30 years later, the feelings are just the same this time around.
The 55-year-old helped fire the Hammers back to the top-flight the following
season, enjoying an outstanding season in Division Two and winning the 1979
Hammer of the Year award. Just as West Ham showed back then, Devonshire
insists hard work is the pre-requisite to gaining promotion next term. "I'm
gutted, absolutely gutted. Half a dozen games before the end I thought we
were going to get out of it, but our performances haven't been good enough
all season and we're down. "I started in non-league but I was here from the
age of 20 and was brought up here and was here for a long time, for 14
years, and the one thing the fans want is commitment. They want players who
give 110 per cent. "Being a professional footballer is the best job in the
world, take it from me, and if you can't give 110 per cent then there is
something wrong with you. "It's just been a really disappointing season and
I'm just gutted for everyone at the club, especially the fans."

Allardyce offered job?

Fresh rumours are suggesting that Sam Allardyce has been offered the vacant
managerial position. Allardyce - who is thought to be in the North East
tonight attending an event at Sunderland - is said to have been given the
chance to become West Ham United's 14th full-time manager after a day in
which he went from an outsider to odds-on favourite to land the post with
the bookies. Following David Sullivan's revelation last night that he had
offered the job to two parties within the past 24 hours, speculation as to
their identities has been rife. However nothing has yet been forthcoming
from within Upton Park to offer any further indication of how negotiations
are progressing.

Sam Allardyce could be named as the 14th full-time manager of West Ham
United - if he rejects an offer to work in Abu Dhabi. The 56-year-old is
being hotly tipped to accept an offer from West Ham that was said to have
been made earlier this week - despite having previously expressed a desire
to move to the capital of the United Arab Emirates. News emerging late
Saturday night suggested that Allardyce had been swayed by West Ham's
overtures and was set to agree terms. But at the same time, the Arabic
press were claiming that the former Bolton manager was set to join Pro
League outfit Al Jazira. Allardyce, in a recent interview with Sport360 is
reported to have said: "I got an offer last summer for a job with Al Ahli
which is something I was interested in. "So when a job comes up in that part
of the world - and in particularly with Jazira - it is something I would
love to do."

Allardyce is said to have been offered a £1.25million contract with a
£1million plus bonus for achieving promotion next season with West Ham.

West Ham's United's captain at the 2006 FA Cup Final has been released by
Aston Villa on a free transfer. Nigel Reo-Coker, who once appeared to have
the football world at his feet was confirmed today as one of ten players the
Midlands club were not offering new contracts to. Reo-Coker's snub comes
exactly five years after he became West Ham's youngest captain to lead the
club into an FA Cup Final. That game - widely considered the greatest final
in recent years - was eventually won by Liverpool on penalties after the
teams played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. But less than a year later, Reo-Coker
was on his way to Villa in an £8.5million deal. Alan Pardew brought thr
former England under-21 captain to West Ham in January 2004, when he paid
the now defunct Wimbledon £500,000 for his services. Less than two years
later, and having returned to the Premier League via the Championship
play-offs at Cardiff the summer before Reo-Coker led his side out at the
same venue for that incredible 2006 Final. However his next - and final -
season at West Ham quickly turned into a nightmare. Having fallen out with
supporters by cupping his hand to his ear when scoring the winning goal
against Manchester United - and having been accused of membership of the
notorious 'Bentley boys' club by Alan Curbishley - Reo-Coker became the
focal point for the team's ills. Having accused - without foundation -
supporters of racial abuse, the writing was on the wall for the
Southwark-born player - and Martin O'Neill paid the inflated sum in July
2007 to take him to Aston Villa and end his Hammers nightmare.

Zavon Hines is set to leave West Ham this summer having rejected the club's
offer of a contrcat extention. The England under-21 international is out of
contract this summer but with West Ham's relegation to the Championship,
looked set to extend his career in east London. However co-chairman David
Sullivan revealed last night that the 22-year-old striker had turned down
United's latest contract offer - and now seems certain to move on to
pastures new within the next few weeks. Hines, who has been unhappy at the
club for some time expressed his dissatisfaction with the selection policy
of former manager Avram Grant the day before West Ham's 3-2 defeat at Wigan
that confirmed the club's relegation. Talking via Twitter, he revealed that
he was "very frustrated with not being able to help my childhood club
because I'm not getting the chance to score the goals the club needs." The
young striker made his first team debut in a 4-1 Carling Cup win over
Macclesfield back in August 2008. Since then he has made just seven starts
for the first team.

Report on first meeting of the Supporter's Advisory Board
May 27th, 2011 - 10:45 am by RobertBanks
West Ham Till I Die

Yesterday I attended the inaugural meeting of the Supporter's Advisory Board
(SAB). I was in two minds whether to attend. I have, as you know, been
sceptical about the whole thing but I have always taken the view "Don't
knock it until you've tried it." I went along to see if there was anything
there that might change my view.

David Sullivan and Karren Brady were in attendance and the meeting did start
with a few words from Sullivan. I don't know what it is about this man. I
simply don't trust him. David Gold, whatever your view of him, has the air
of a respectable business man (even if he does sell dildos) but I just can't
take Sullivan seriously and on top of that, everything he says and
everything he does rub me up the wrong way.

Having said that, everything he said made perfect sense. So I have to just
put it down to a personal prejudice on my part and for that I apologise. It
is a free country and people can behave as they wish and dress how they wish
(and it matters not one iota) – but he addressed us from the stage wearing a
"Raging Bull" t-shirt, with his son sitting next to him. For some reason I
just wanted to punch him. It's probably just the frustration of this season.
It struck me that this was not being taken seriously. I just kept listening
and thinking… he's David Brent. He's going to do a little dance in a minute.

Down to brass tacks, Sullivan said what I expected him to say. He accepted
the board took full responsibility for the appointment of Grant and that
they made a mistake. He said that they were determined not to make the same
mistake and they had a list of candidates but he could not disclose too much
to us. He did say the position had already been offered to someone at £1.25m
salary and a £1.25m promotion bonus but it had been turned down. He also
said that they had agreed a package with another individual and they hoped
he would take it because he would be a very good manager – but there was a
personal issue outside of football that meant he probably would not take it.
If that individual does take the role we will find out about it today.

The question was asked about youth players being retained and Sullivan
confirmed that was the aim. However Zavon Hines' contract had expired and he
was asking for silly money to stay. He could not disclose figures but he
said that is he told us what Hines had asked for we would all be shocked. So
it's safe to say he is on his way. Jordan Spence's contract is also up and
they have made him an offer he has accepted in principle he just wants to
wait to see who is appointed as manager and whether he would be in his
plans. Otherwise the Academy players would be retained.

Sullivan took personal credit for signing Demba Ba and blamed Zola and
Clarke 100% for the signing of Benni McCarthy. He said that Zola and Clarke
came to him and said, "get us McCarthy and we will stay up." This happened
of course – but not quite in the manner anticipated.

The search for a manager may be concluded today or it may take another 2-3
weeks. However he assured us no stone was being unturned. That was the only
thing he said that I 100% believed.

Tony Carr spoke to us about the Academy and distanced himself from the
manager's vacancy.

The SAB will be divided into sub groups with specialist roles, one of which
will be a forum relating to the Olympic Stadium move. Ian Tompkins, the
Olympic Project Director gave a very informative presentation. Those firms
that have been invited to tender for the conversion works have been asked to
come up with ideas for retractable seating. They want to have it – it's just
a question of whether a viable and cost-effective solution can be found.

The stadium will be West Ham's stadium – a 150 year lease is being
negotiated – possibly longer – but the stadium will also be used by other
sports other than football and athletics. Essex CCC may play some 20-20
games there which would make it the 4th biggest cricket venue in the world.
NFL and baseball are also being considered as well as concerts and tourism,
all of which will bring in revenue for the club in terms of spin-off sales.

There will be consultation on the best way to commemorate The Boleyn Ground
and what items should be taken to the new stadium (The Lyall gates, memorial
bricks etc.) There will be a new, bigger museum on site and an SAB member's
suggestion has already been included in the plans, to allow individual fans
to exhibit their own collections of memorabilia.

Season ticket information for 2011-12 will be announced today (Friday) and
will no doubt spark its own debate. It is understood there will be a package
of measures aimed at placating those fans who feel they miss out on one-off
match promotions such as 'kids for a quid' because they have committed to a
season ticket at the start of the season. There will be discounts in the
club shop etc.

Overall, an interesting evening but the SAB has to be taken at face value –
a consultative group. The SAB will not have any powers or influence over
team matters or management matters. The SAB will be consulted over
commercial and infrastructure decisions but the decision of the board is
final. There will also be confidentiality agreements signed by those members
involved in areas of commercial sensitivity.

It was noticeable that most of the people in attendance were very positive,
not just about the SAB but about the future and the Olympic Stadium move. I
have yet to be convinced about the future and it's not in my nature to be
optimistic – but I am prepared to give things a chance before being overly
critical.

I am disappointed that the group is so large at between 80 and 120 – I feel
this could make it a little unwieldy. However it is easy to criticise and be
sceptical about these bodies until the results have been seen. I will attend
the next meeting because I did not come away last night thinking that the
group was a complete waste of time – in life you get out what you put in and
whilst I'm not happy about "branding" and "corporate identities" you have to
accept they are here to stay and I'd rather be on the inside shouting than
outside throwing stones.

West Sam United

SAM ALLARDYCE was last night finalising a deal to be the new manager of West
Ham. Big Sam was in Sunderland yesterday to watch Take That with pal Steve
Bruce.
But fans of the relegated Hammers no longer have to 'Pray' a big name will
take the reins at Upton Park. Allardyce wants in. The man who turned modest
Bolton into a Premier League force is relishing the chance to get the
Londoners back up from the Championship at the first time of asking. And
five months after being sacked by Blackburn, he is ready to return to
management as successor to Avram Grant. He has met Hammers' co-owner David
Sullivan and is promised a £1m bonus if he wins promotion. Allardyce was
hoping to get a job back in the top flight. But he is willing to spearhead
the Hammers' bid for a swift return to the Premier League.

Newcastle trying to beat Sunderland to Hammers star
Published 23:00 27/05/11 By Alan Nixon
The Mirror

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew wants to snap up Demba Ba from West Ham on a free
transfer as he tries to beat arch-rivals Sunderland to his signature. Pardew
has been alerted to the Senegalese striker's availability - and eagerness to
stay in the Premier League after the Hammers' relegation - and is putting a
lucrative deal together. Ba has a clause in his contract that allows him to
leave and is fielding offers from other clubs before informing the
relegated outfit that he wants out, as he is not keen on spending a season
in the Championship. Sunderland are also interested in Ba too, but he is
just one of several targets that Steve Bruce has earmarked for a summer
spend. Newcastle are more focused on landing him though, as they try to
replace Andy Carroll without spending a fortune. The Geordies have had a bid
for Lorient's Kevin Gameiro rejected and are unwilling to match the
£10million-plus asking price. However they would throw a lot of money at Ba
to land him without a transfer fee.

Fiery Davies could be too hot for Hammers
Published 23:01 27/05/11 By John Cross
The Mirror

Billy Davies' fiery temper could be the stumbling block between him and the
West Ham job. Hammers co-owners David Gold and Sullivan are keen on the
Nottingham Forest boss because of his record in getting teams into the
play-offs in the Championship. But Davies, who is on the brink at Forest
after failing to get them up through the play-offs, has also gained a
reputation for publicly criticising the board. That could yet see West Ham
go for ex-Bolton, Blackburn and Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce, whose price
with some bookies went to odds-on yesterday. Allardyce could also create
problems for Gold and Sullivan as he wants to bring in his own backroom
staff and have control over transfers. His style of play is also unlikely to
be popular with West Ham fans. West Ham chief Sullivan even revealed at a
supporters' meeting on Thursday that the job had been offered to a British
manager but would not say who. West Ham are now trying to clinch a deal so
the new man can being the rebuilding job for next season.

EXCLUSIVE: Irons set to name Allardyce as new boss after talks with
co-owners
By MATT LAWTON

Daily Mail

Sam Allardyce is poised to become the new manager of West Ham. The former
Blackburn, Newcastle and Bolton boss was in talks with Hammers co-owners
David Sullivan and David Gold to tie up the finer points of an agreement.
Allardyce could be named as the successor to Avram Grant soon after
convincing the Upton Park board to back his ambitious plans to reshape the
club's squad and backroom structure. The 56-year-old has been out of work
since his shock sacking from Ewood Park in December after he fell out with
Blackburn's new Indian owners over transfer policy. But Sullivan and Gold
believe his record of delivering success on a budget makes him the right
candidate to take on the massive task of restoring West Ham to the Barclays
Premier League. They are ready to offer a salary package of £1.25million
with the same again as a bonus if he can win promotion, as he did when he
built his reputation at Bolton. Sullivan and Gold will want Allardyce to
make up the loss of revenue caused by relegation by selling players after a
disastrous season in which the club finished with just 33 points. But they
have reassured Allardyce they will support spending on fitness and analysis
infrastructure that have always been a crucial part of his methods. His
first job will be to resolve the future of Footballer of the Year Scott
Parker, goalkeeper Robert Green, defender Matthew Upson and striker Carlton
Cole. Sullivan has already warned the club would need to sell their high
earners and Allardyce will be charged with getting the best possible fees to
give himself money to replace them.

West Ham to swoop for Sam Allardyce despite Al Jazira interest - report
By Ben Somerford

Goal.com

Sam Allardyce has been heavily linked with the vacant managerial job at West
Ham despite indicating this week he's interested in coaching United Arab
Emirates (UAE) club Al Jazira. The Daily Mail reports 56-year-old Allardyce
is set to be appointed the new Hammers boss following the club's relegation
from the Premier League last week. Avram Grant was sacked as Hammers manager
after the 3-2 loss to Wigan in their penultimate game of the season which
confirmed their relegation. Earlier this week Allardyce, who hasn't worked
since being dismissed by Blackburn last December, told Sport360 he was
interested in the top job at UAE champions Al Jazira following the departure
of title-winning coach Abel Braga to Fluminense. "I am definitely
interested," said Allardyce. "I got an offer last summer for a job with Al
Ahli which is something I was interested in but unfortunately my club,
Blackburn, did not want me to leave so I couldn't move for forward with that
scenario. "So when a job comes up in that part of the world and in
particularly with Jazira it is something I would love to do. "Al Jazira have
been very successful so to take my 10 years Premier League experience into
the club would be a good match." Allardyce added: "There is no doubt that I
can bring plenty to Al Jazira to help them achieve greater success. "I can
make sure that the quality of performance that you need at all levels of a
football club, not just on the field but off the field are in place. "Once
you have seen it and done it like Al Jazira have this season then you can
look to the quality players to continue that success and ensure they improve
on what they have already achieved."

Turgott gets World Cup call
WHUFC.com
Blair Turgott has been included in England's squad for the FIFA U17 World
Cup finals in Mexico
26.05.2011

West Ham United midfielder Blair Turgott will go for FIFA World Cup glory
after being included in England's squad for the forthcoming U17 version of
football's biggest tournament. The 17-year-old has played a massive part in
helping England to qualify for the competition, which takes place in Mexico
between 18 June and 10 July. The Young Lions have been drawn in Group C
alongside Uruguay, Canada and Rwanda. Turgott helped England to progress to
the World Cup by scoring two vital goals to help his country qualify for the
UEFA European U17 Championship finals, which were held in Serbia earlier
this month. There, England reached the semi-finals, automatically qualifying
them for the World Cup. The Hammers youngster has been capped 12 times by
England at U17 level since making his debut against Sweden in October 2010,
scoring three goals. Prior to that, Turgott was capped six times at U16
level, winning the Victory Shield and reaching the final of the Montaigu
Tournament in France. Unfortunately, Turgott will not be joined at the World
Cup by club-mate and long-time England colleague Matthias Fanimo, who is
still recovering from a knee injury suffered earlier this year. However, he
will not be the only West Ham representative at the finals, as Academy
Player of the Year Dylan Tombides has been called-up by Australia. England
kick-off their campaign against Rwanda in Pachuca on 19 June before facing
Canada at the same venue on 22 June and completing their group-stage
fixtures against Uruguay in Torreon on 25 June. Australia, meanwhile, take
on Ivory Coast in Guadalajara on 20 June and Brazil in the same stadium on
23 June before moving to Queretaro for their final Group F fixture with
Denmark on 26 June.

Spector set for Gold Cup

Jonathan Spector is in the United States squad for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold
Cup
26.05.2011

Jonathan Spector has been included in the United States squad for the 2011
CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 25-year-old will appear in the tournament - the North
and Central American version of the UEFA European Championship - for the
second time, having lifted the trophy on his previous appearance in 2007.
Spector is one of eleven squad members to have won the trophy previously and
one of seven English-based players in Bob Bradley's 23-man selection. The US
will begin Group C play on 7 June against Canada at Ford Field in Detroit,
Michigan, before taking on Panama on 11 June at Raymond James Stadium in
Tampa, Florida. The group stage will end on 14 June against Guadeloupe at
LIVESTRONG Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Before the competition begins, the
Americans will meet up on Thursday before hosting FIFA World Cup holders
Spain in a friendly in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on 4 June. Spector, capped
30 times by his country since making his debut in 2004, was a starter when
the US defeated Spain 2-0 in the last meeting between the two nations at the
FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa in June 2009. The Illinois native
has enjoyed a fine season for West Ham United, making 21 appearances,
scoring four goals and collecting the Individual Performance of the Season
award for his outstanding display in the 4-0 Carling Cup victory over
Manchester United in November. Spector is one of two West Ham players set to
appear at the Gold Cup, as Pablo Barrera has been named in Mexico's squad
for the tournament. The Mexicans are in Group A alongside Costa Rica, El
Salvador and Cuba.

* Meanwhile, Danny Gabbidon and Jack Collison were both unused substitutes
on Wednesday night - along with former club-mates James Collins and Craig
Bellamy - as Wales lost 3-1 to Scotland in Dublin. The duo could figure when
the Welsh play Northern Ireland on Friday night.

Red card woe for Wearen

26.05.2011

Eoin Wearen was sent-off as Republic Ireland were held to a goalless draw

qualifier on Thursday. The West Ham United midfielder was booked after 81
minutes before receiving a second yellow card deep into added-time as the
Irish followed-up a 1-0 win over Group 4 hosts Poland with another strong
defensive display in Koszalin. Wearen, who appeared as a second-half
substitute against the Poles, was in the action regularly against Ukraine,
but will now be suspended when Ireland complete their Elite Round qualifying
phase by facing Italy in Kolobrzeg on Sunday. Italy face Poland in their
second fixture on Thursday evening, having defeated Ukraine 1-0 in their own
opening match. The group winners will qualify for the final tournament,
which will be held in Romania between 20 July and 1 August.

Sullivan reveals two job offers

By: Staff Writer

David Sullivan revealed tonight that he has offered the vacant managerial
position to two candidates within the last 48 hours. West Ham's co-chairman,
speaking at the inaugural Supporters' Advisory Board meeting at the Boleyn
Ground tonight told the audience that one manager has rejected the offer -
whilst another is set to give his answer within the next 24 hours.

However Sullivan also admitted that he expected the offer - a £50,000 per
week contract plus a £1million-plus bonus for achieving promotion - to be
refused once again; news which will no doubt delight the tabloid press, who
have made the most of some of the club's - and the board's - ill-advised
decisions of late. The meeting was chaired by Sullivan who was assisted by
vice-chair Karren Brady, Olympic Stadium director Ian Tompkins and Academy
Director Tony Carr, who was recently voted as supporters' second choice to
replace Avram Grant behind Martin O'Neill.

A range of questions on the club's future were answered; we'll bring you
further details of the night's events later.

Former Hammers striker Iain Dowie has thrown his hat into the ring to become
West Ham's next manager. Dowie - whose sixth and most recent management
position ended after just two months in 2010 when he led Hull City to
relegation from the Premier League - told Sky Sports that he would be
extremely interested should the club come calling. "Anybody would be silly
not to be interested in a club like West Ham," he said. "You never know if
you will get that call or not, but I sense they may go for a slightly bigger
name and look to make a statement. You would understand that and there is no
problem with that. "You always think you can add a bit of a difference and
add a bit of value on the training ground. I always think it is important as
a coach to develop players and I think my record is fairly good at that.
We'll see; I've always said given the right opportunity that would be
right."

Meanwhile former Hammers striker Teddy Sheringham revealed that he was
backing temporary manager Kevin Keen to land the position full-time. "He's
a West Ham and he knows the club inside out," Sheringham told SSN. "He knows
the regime of the club and how they should play. To carry on producing the
football they're used to would be lovely to see again, so I'd give Kev a
chance." Current favourites to succeed Avram Grant on Betfair are Sam
Allardyce, Martin O'Neill and Chris Hughton. The current favourite amongst
supporters voting in a poll here on KUMB.com remains O'Neill, with Tony Carr
in second place.

Player Reviews 2010/11 - Part 1
Vinny - Thu May 26 2011
West Ham Online
Player Reviews - 2010/11 - Part One

Here are the Player Reviews for 2010/11 Season. This 8th season running I've
done this and it started back in the Championship where we will sadly be
heading next season.

If the player has played at all during the course of the season they will be
reviewed. It may be interesting to note that West Ham have used more players
than any other Premiership Team this campaign.

We start with Goal Keepers and Defenders.

Goal Keepers

Robert Green
Like most of our players, it has been a difficult season for Robert Green.
The World Cup in South Africa went as badly as it could have done with his
terrible mistake against the USA. Coming back to Upton Park the fans really
needed to get behind him given the stick he would endure by opposition
supporters and as fans we gave him our full backing to which he seemed to
appreciate. Green kept just 5 clean sheets throughout the season as he
started 37 of the 38 league games. For the club to have kept so few clean
sheets is just another reason to why relegation was the end result. His
first mistake of the season came at home to Chelsea when he failed to hold a
shot from Drogba which eventually found its way into the goal from the
rebound.

The next league game up at Stoke saw Green look as though he had totally
fallen apart with an erratic performance as he let the Stoke fans get the
better of him. But time would be a healer for Green's season as he came back
strong against Tottenham at Upton Park making a string of wonderful saves
and keeping his first clean sheet of the season.

The fans do seem to like Robert Green and I think this is down to West Ham
fans always having a good relationship with the goal keepers at the club.
There is a bit of banter between Green and sections of the crowd and he
always acknowledges the fans. As a goal keeper he has been up and down
during the season making some great saves as we know he can but then making
rash decisions which ultimately cost us goals.

There was just the one penalty stop this season as he saved a Matthew
Etherington Penalty in the second half of a FA Cup Quarter final game at
Stoke City. As team performances got worse, Green became more frustrated
which all seemed to come to a head against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium when
after a Bolton goal he proceeded to square up to team mate Mark Noble in an
unsavoury sight.

Green always comes across to me as a bit of an odd character and quite a
moody one at that. All that stuff with having 'England's Number Six'
actually sown on to his gloves did raise an eyebrow as I could not get into
that way of thinking. Yes, he may have said it to the press as a joke and
had some banter with the fans but to go as far as getting this on your
gloves always surprised me a little.

Green is a superb shot stopper and the way he was treated by England for one
mistake would surely have knocked anyone's confidence. He has played 196
times for the club and has become a mainstay of our team. I like Robert
Green and have been happy to have him as our goal keeper. With relegation it
would seem as though he will be leaving in the coming weeks but it wouldn't
shock me to see him in our starting line up come August.

In the Championship you need a good goalkeeper and Robert Green is as good
as any in the English game. If he does move on in the Summer he is one
player I am happy to thank for his effort he has put in at West Ham and he
can go away with this reputation at West Ham in tact and I think Green will
be remembered fondly by the West Ham supporters

Apps: League 37 (starts) Cup 7 (Starts)
Verdict: A tough season for him with many goals conceded. Playing with an
ever changing defence in front of him hasn't help. I fear he may be one of a
number of players leaving in the summer.

Marek Stech
Stech seemed to go into the season as our Number 2 keeper and made his full
debut in the League Cup tie at home to Oxford United where he kept a clean
sheet and put in a solid performances making a couple of good saves from
long range efforts. Manager Avram Grant kept faith with him in the next
League Cup tie which was a tricky trip to Sunderland where again Stech
performance admirably and looked as though he would have that number two
slot for all of the season.

The League Cup was proving to be his way into the side and in the next round
he took his place between the sticks again against Stoke City in the 3-1
victory after extra time. He found his game a little more tough with a
couple of static moments but all in all it was another decent display from
what seemed a competent keeper.

But then we signed Belgian Goal Keeper Ruud Boffin and from 20th November
2010, Stech was not named in a squad again. This seems to be because if he
plays two more games we will owe his former club Sparta Prague 600k. What
this means to his future at West Ham I do not know but it does not look good
and I would be surprised if he was retained this summer simply due to that
payment we would have to make.

Apps: Cup 3
Verdict: Looked a decent enough keeper and is only 21 years of age but with
a 600k payment needed if he plays two more games I cannot see our owners
investing this in him.

Ruud Boffin
23 year old Belgian Boffin was brought in as cover for Robert Green. He
signed from Dutch side MVV Maastricht for an undisclosed fee on a two year
contract.
He made his debut away at Blackburn Rovers after Robert Green was out
through injury. It was a tough baptism of fire for the young keeper to be
thrown in at the deep end in an important league fixture.

He made a few good saves although looked very suspect at crosses (which many
young keepers are) and was very unlucky with the one goal he conceded after
he had made a superb stop to keep the initial shot out. Having not watched
any reserve games it is difficult for me to comment on his ability as we
just haven't seen enough of him. But if the new manager continues to rate
him we may see more of him next season.

Apps: League 1

Defenders

Lars Jacobsen
The Danish right back was signed on Transfer Deadline day from Blackburn
Rovers on a free transfer and a one year contract. To why Blackburn were
happy to let a player leave to go to another Premiership team for free did
strike me as odd initially but given that Jacobsen is not exactly anything
special makes it seem a little more understandable.

At the time of his signing we were desperate for a right back. Why we had
not been able to get one in earlier I do not know as it was Winston Reid who
had started the season away at Aston Villa in the right back slot an put in
a woeful performance. With only Julien Faubert in the squad who could play
in this position (I use the word 'play' lightly) Jacobsen and West Ham
seemed the perfect fit.

In his first few games he looked solid and dependable with a good ability in
the tackle despite having no pace. But as we saw as the months went on
Jacobsen was your quintessential footballer with nothing about him. On
uninteresting statistic is that Jacobsen did not receive one booking over
the course of the season. For a right back who would be used to challenging
wingers I found this surprising.

It is difficult to even remember a game where he had an impact although his
best games came in both the home and away matches against Tottenham
especially in the home game when the over hyped Gareth Bale could not find a
way past the no nonsense Dane and was totally snuffed out.

An inoffensive player and one who if he leaves will be forgotten quickly.

Apps: League 22 (1 sub) Cup 2
Verdict: A desperation signing at the time when we had failed to bring in a
full back of decent quality. Filled the gap well enough but in a season
where our defence was truly awful I wouldn't expect another deal for
Jacobsen.

Julien Faubert
Voted the WHO Hammer Of The Year runner up last season and with no right
back bought in during the summer it seemed as though Faubert was going to
see a lot more action in this position. Oddly he started the season as an
attacking right winger away at Aston Villa where he was dreadful. He
reverted back to the right back position for the following game bus as time
went on you could see how weak he was and how desprately we needed to
replace him. Jacobsen came in and Faubert hardly played again coming in and
out of the side depending on if Jacobsen was injured or cup tied.

The last game he took any part in is when he started away at Everton in the
2-2 draw. And then he was out of the team completely with even centre half
James Tomkins being preferred to him at right back.

Faubert's West Ham career has been pretty poor since he signed for big money
back in 2007. Injury hampered his first season and then we saw how bad he
was as an attacking right winger he simply reverted to right back because we
had no one else. I think he is a poor player and has a horrible attitude. I
cannot wait to see him leave the club but I do not see who would take him on
at this moment in time because he must be on an outrageous wage given the
money we were spending at the time of his signing.

He can't attack, he can't defend - what good is he to West Ham?

Apps: League 7 (2) Cup 7
Bookings: 2
Verdict: Lost his place to an average player which tells you everything you
need to know about the waste of time that is Julien Faubert.

Jordan Spence
Spence made his debut at the back end of last season coming on as a sub in
the final game. He played 12 times for the reserve team this season and was
sent out on loan to Championship side Bristol City in March 2011 where he
played 11 times.

With injuries mounting up in defence Avram Grant recalled him from his loan
spell and surprisingly thrust him into the team for the crucial away game at
Wigan. It was a strange decision for Grant to make (although he made many)
and Spence struggled to cope with the pace of the game with Wigan focussing
most of their attacks down his side.

He is a player who continues to develop and I don't think we have really
seen how good or bad he is at this point. With our relegation Spence looks
certain to feature in the next campaign as he aims to make the right back
slot his own.

Apps: League 2
Verdict: Has gained Championship experience with a couple of club over the
last few season and will look to cement his place in our team.

Tal Ben Haim
After much speculation Ben Haim finally signed for the club in August on
loan from recently relegated Portsmouth. The deal was a loan spell till
January with a view to make the move permanent. His first few games were
largely poor displays with him looking very erratic and uneasy when on the
ball

His performance up at Wolves saw him start at left back and look a liability
for most of the game. He was played at right back, centre half and left back
in his short time at the club. In fact he started just eight games.

Ben Haim put in his best performance in the cup demolition of Manchester
United when he played at left back and was superb. He was strong in the
tackle and bullied the Manchester United winger Bebe who looked as though he
was going to burst into tears when Ben Haim dumped him to the floor.

As the games went on I thought Ben Haim looked quite decent and although he
was in the defence who were crushed 5-0 at Newcastle I was thinking we would
keep him on when January came around but with the club wanting to bring in
two other domestic loan signings (Bridge and Keane) Ben Haim was the fall
guy and was returned to Portsmouth, missing out on the registration deadline
and not playing any club football again.

Ben Haim was obviously way past his best, but he did a decent job in the
time he was at the club and just as he was finding some decent form he was
sent packing.

Winston Reid
The Official site kept us guessing about the World Cup International star we
were about to sign and it was all a little anti climatic when it turned out
to be 22 year old New Zealand International Winston Reid. In fairness he did
play in the World Cup and he did score a goal for his country, but I don't
know about anyone else, but I knew f*ck all about who he was or what he was
like as a player.

We were told he was a centre half and that he as signed for an undisclosed
fee apparently in the region of £4m. It is now that you can't help but think
that figure must be way off and was simply some sort of Savio spin to make
out we are spending money.

Reid was picked to start in the opening fixture at Aston Villa but instead
of playing at centre half he was playing at right back and he had one of
those nightmare debuts. He hadn't played in any of our Pre Season fixtures
so to be chucked in (Grant would do this with Spence later in the season)
seemed an odd selection. Reid was subsequently taken apart by any player who
wanted to take him on and was promptly dropped from the starting line up for
the next game.

In fact Reid wouldn't take part in another game until 27th November when we
played Wigan at Upton Park and he came on as a 50th minute substitute for
the injured Lars Jacobsen.

He would have to wait until January to make another appearance as he was
brought on as a 90th minute sub when we were leading 2-1 at Goodison Park
and whilst it was not all his fault, his missed tackle did end up leading to
the equaliser.

All in all Reid had been struggling and has made no impact on the team
whatsoever. He looked far from gaining a first team place but with injuries
to Upson, Gabbidon and Tomkins he was called upon to play in his preferred
position of Centre Half.

He started two games in a row against Birmingham at Upton Park and away at
the Hawthorns in the 3-3 draw with West Brom. He was awful in both and
scored a terrible own goal in the game against West Brom.

Quite frankly Winston Reid has looked pretty damn awful since coming to the
club and despite scoring his first goal in the FA Cup Game against Burnley I
have not exactly been impressed with him.

I would suspect he will be here next season, but despite dropping down a
division he needs to make massive improvements.

Apps: 3 (4) Cup: 4 (1)
Goals: Cup: 1
Bookings: 1
Verdict: Hyped up by the club in the summer but has been poor in his few
displays.

James Tomkins
I like Tomkins and think he is an excellent defender who may be prone to the
odd mistake but has worked hard to cut these out of his game. He may not
look it but the boy can put in as tough a performance as you need your
centre half to display. He tackles hard and not afraid to battle with bigger
centre forwards who look to bully him out of the game.

He had a tough start to the season playing poorly against Aston Villa and
being dropped from first team action. Tomkins actually didn't start again
until the end of November against Wigan. He deserved his chance in the game
and didn't look back, starting many of the remaining games.

Tomkins put in a great display against Everton and I stated in my report:
"Another warrior like performance from Tomkins who really knows how to dig
in. He was tough and solid and threw himself at everything. Brilliant once
again."

Disappointingly he only managed to score one goal and that game in the 1-3
home defeat to Manchester City.

Tomkins was played at right back by Avram Grant in the FA Cup Quarter final
at Stoke and did have a poor game (although he should have been awarded a
penalty) and was unlucky to be dropped for the next few games in another
bizarre Avram Grant decision. He has expressed his desire to stay at the
club and I for one am very happy about this because James Tomkins gives
everything he has when he is wearing a West Ham shirt and I think he has a
lot of ability which I am sure we will be seeing next season.

Verdict: Tough season at times but he continues to develop into a good
player.

Danny Gabbidon
I was surprised he was here at the start of the season as I would have
thought moving on would have been best for both player and club. But he
stayed at the club and played a lot of game during the season. Gabbidon
started 24 league games which compared to his 8 from last season it was a
much better season in terms of overcoming his injury problems.

He had to fill in at left back with the lack of a replacement for Herita
Ilunga. Gabbidon has bags of experience but looked as shaky as a teenager in
certain games with his backtracking and poor anticipation.

It remains to be seen whether the Welsh International will be offered a new
deal as his contract is out this summer. I still find it hard to believe we
are talking about the same player who won Hammer Of The Year in 2005/06
season. He was so impressive during that campaign and if he does leave
during the summer w will have fond memories of one great season.

Criticism of his performances on Twitter saw a strong worded reply from
Gabbidon and a fine from the FA for his comments. Injuries have taken their
toll and although he seems to have overcome this Gabbidon is not a player
you feel comfortable having at the heart of your defence.

Verdict: You should feel pleased having a player of his experience in the
side but he hasn't shown consistent good form during the season.

Manuel Da Costa
It seemed as though Da Costa had cemented his place at centre half when he
went on a six game in row starting place but off the field problems
involving an incident at a night club halted his progress and he could very
well serve a prison sentence later in the year. Da Costa is an excellent
defender in the air and he wins a large percentage of headers when up
against all types of defenders. When the opposition side would play the ball
long I thought Da Costa was generally dominant.

The thing with Da Costa is if you get a player up against him with any sort
of decent movement he struggles to anticipate their action and often looks
all over the place.
After losing to Arsenal on October 30th 2010, Da Costa would not start
another game for the club until 7th February 2011 away at West Brom in the
3-3 which he and Reid at the centre of the defence were quite terrible.

A few games later away at Tottenham he performed really well but in the
Manchester United home game we would see the best and worst of him as he
marked Rooney out of the game in the first period only to fall apart in the
second half and Rooney scored a hat trick. Despite his inconsistent displays
I believe Da Costa is a good centre half and capable of getting better. This
of course all depends on whether he gets sent down for another display of a
football being a complete idiot.

He would be an excellent player to have in the Championship.

Verdict: Missing for a large period which was a shame as he was beginning to
show some good form. Would be great to keep him.

Matthew Upson
It is easy to point the finger at Matthew Upson for part in our downfall
given that he is the Captain and a highly paid one at that. Upson has taken
a lot of flak when maybe it was a little unfair at times but when you have a
player like Scott Parker in the team questions will be asked about the
passion shown from the player who has been designated as the one to lead the
side on the pitch.

For me Upson has had a poor season not because of his lack of desire but
because he is simply getting older and has past his best. I think we saw
some of his best during his first couple of seasons at the club but the
performances have been getting worse and he looks slow and mistake prone.

I can't help but think he had a bit of World Cup syndrome in that he reached
a height of his career by playing for his country in the World Cup (despite
how shit the display was) which is much what happened to Trevor Sinclair all
those years ago when it just seemed as though something had been lost when
he came back from World Cup duty and that little bit extra to give in games
was lost.

Maybe I am wrong when I say he lacked passion because there were games where
we needed him to drive the team on and pick them up when a goal had been
conceded but instead he seemed sedated and past caring.

It is hard to really know what has gone on behind the scenes and I can only
really comment on what I have seen on the pitch over the course of the
season but something with Matthew Upson wasn't right. When the club needed a
player to spout some pro club rubbish they would reel out Scott Parker or
maybe another player but never Upson.

Around February time Upson seemed to be picking up form like the rest of the
team but this all seemed to end away at Bolton where he put in a quite
shocking first half performance and in the subsequent game against Aston
Villa he was misjudging the flight of the ball and constantly messing up his
clearances. As I said, it might be too easy to dig out Upson just because he
isn't a shouter on the pitch and doesn't go diving into tackles, but I
cannot help but feel he could have done a lot more to get us through the
season, and just think he didn't do enough. His contract is out at the end
of the season and even if we had stayed up I do not think may supporters
would be eager to see him stay,

Verdict: The Club Captain struggled for a lot of the season and despite
still being a solid if unspectacular centre half his time at West Ham has
come to an end.

Herita Ilunga
The good people of WHO voted Ilunga their Player Of The Season in 2008/09
season. He then signed a permenant contract with the club, had a dire season
in 2009/10 and had another awful campaign this time around. In fact he has
been so out of form he didn't even make the 25 man squad in January and had
to sit out the rest of the season as he was not elgable to play. This says
it all about how bad he has become and surely his time at the club is over.
He started the season in the left back slot but had a nightmare against
Villa and in the next game at home to Bolton he wasn't much better.

Once the first four games were played he found himself out of the side but
came back for a run of four games between the end of October and into
November. With no other left back option (having got rid of the promising
Daprela in the summer) we were having to play centre halves Tal Ben Haim and
Danny Gabbidon at left back.
Rumours also began to circulate that Ilunga was not the 29 years of age that
he claimed to be and was in fact well into his thirties. This may also
explain him being dumped from the squad completely.

Whatever has happened it is just another in the long line of West Ham f*ck
ups and Ilunga is a player that regardless of our Premiership status needed
to be offloaded.
His last performance for the club came in the FA Cup game against Nottingham
Forest but with Wayne Bridge having just signed as few days later Ilunga
would find that he was not longer needed by the squad.

Verdict: Loss of form and the fact he is 46 years old all mean that Ilunga
had another awful season and the sooner we see the back of him the better.

Wayne Bridge
Signed on loan from Manchester City in the January Transfer window with the
club picking up his alleged 90k a week wage the signing of Bridge I thought
was something of a coup as there are not that many better left backs than
him in the Premiership. His debut against Arsenal reminded many of a certain
Scott Minto as he was at fault for all three goals and looked so bad it was
almost laughable.

But the following game at Everton he looked much better and the following
games at Blackpool and West Brom saw him play very well as he was almost
playing as an attacking left winger the amount he got forward. As the team
started to lose form Bridge found himself to eager to get forward and was
caught the wrong side of the attacking players too often and some of these
occasions led to goals.

Given that we were eventually relegated the signing of Bridge will probably
go down as a failure but I saw enough of him to know that he is a good
player who will get in to many Premiership sides starting elevens. I think
if we had have retained our Premiership status the owners would have made
every attempt to secure his services on a permanent basis. But as it is this
expensive gamble didn't work out and like Robbie Keane will not be missed by
the West Ham fans.

Verdict: Looked good at times and seemed to have solved our left back
problem, but he was brought in to ensure we stayed up - and we didn't.

Part 2 will be up in a few days time.

Now Villa have hots for Scott
Published: Today
The Sun

ASTON VILLA have joined the race to sign Scott Parker. The midfielder is
sure to leave relegated West Ham this summer with Tottenham and Liverpool
are leading the chase. But ambitious Villa are ready to fight for the
£10million-rated ace. Parker is 30 and the Midlands club have previously
targeted younger players with more of a sell-on value. But his performances
in a struggling side could persuade owner Randy Lerner to part with his
cash. Villa will raise money from the sale of winger Ashley Young should he
get the £15m move he wants to one of the Champions League-chasing clubs.

Billy Davies in frame for West Ham job
Published 23:01 26/05/11 By John Cross - EXCLUSIVE
The Mirror

Billy Davies last night emerged as a shock contender for the West Ham job.
Nottingham Forest boss Davies has been left on the brink at the City Ground
after the club's defeat in the Championship play-offs. But West Ham are
believed to be keen on him, despite also lining up ex-Bolton, Blackburn and
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce for Upton Park. West Ham co-owner David
Sullivan even told a fans' group on Thursday night that a British manager
had been offered the job, but admitted there were factors blocking an
immediate appointment. Sullivan refused to name the candidate. Fiery Scot
Davies has had his problems and fall-outs at Forest but has a proven track
record of leading clubs into the play-offs and to promotion. Allardyce had
seemed to be red-hot favourite, but it is understood that he has made it
clear that he wanted complete control of transfers and permission to bring
in his own backroom staff. Davies however, may not be a popular appointment
with the fans as the club know that supporters have reservations about his
style of football.
