Poyet - We're loving pre-season
WHUFC.com

Young West Ham United midfielder Diego Poyet says the players are thriving on a pre-season packed with friendly fixtures and the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Europa League. And with another three matches in the next five days, he says there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in the squad to impress new manager Slaven Bilic. West Ham travel to the Weston Homes Community Stadium to play Colchester United on Tuesday, then take a 1-0 lead to Malta for Thursday's return leg of the Europa League second qualifying round against Birkirkara. Another busy week ends on Saturday with a visit to Poyet's former club Charlton Athletic, where the 20-year-old was voted the Addicks' Player of the Year in the 2013/14 season. Speaking after Saturday's exciting 3-2 victory away to Southend United, the Uruguayan Under-20 international said the squad could not be happier. "We love it," he told whufc.com. "Every player wants to play games, so if you say to someone would you rather run for an hour four times a week or play games, I'm sure every player would rather play games, so we're really happy and excited about that. "I've personally played already three 90 minutes this pre-season and I'm loving it. This is probably the pre-season I've enjoyed the most. Everyone's getting minutes, so it's good for the whole team. Everyone's sharp, the training's sharp, we're ready."

Having come on as a substitute in the first leg against Birkirkara, Poyet is keen to make the trip to Malta, but accepts that squad rotation is also important at this stage of pre-season.
He continued: "Everyone wants to play. It's a competitive game, it's Europe, so everyone wants to be involved. "But there are a lot of games from here to Arsenal where people will get the chance to try and impress and show the manager what they can do, so everyone wants to go but not everyone can, and I'm sure everyone understands that. "We wanted to be a bit more comfortabey, but a win's a win. We've got the 1-0 and we go over there confident that we can finish it off and win again, not go and play for the draw. We'll go over there looking to win the game, and put in another good solid performance."

Poyet says the entire squad is excited about the season that lies ahead, especially with this summer's new signings showing the extra quality they will bring to the team, as Dimitri Payet did with his performance at Roots Hall. "What a player", Poyet said of his near-namesake. "Some of us had seen him play in the past, for others it was the first time. You can see what he can do. He's a great addition to the team and I'm sure he's going to create a lot of defensive chaos this year. "It's very exciting for everyone, and it's the last season at the Boleyn Ground, so I'm sure it's going to be a great season for us."

U's prove too much for young Hammers
WHUFC.com

West Ham United's hectic pre-season schedule continued with a narrow 1-0 defat against League One outfit Colchester United. A youthful West Ham XI taken by Academy Manager Terry Westey took to the field at the Weston Homes Stadium, however it was the U's who had the better of the opening exchanges. Drey Wright proved to be a constant threat down the left flank while George Moncur kept the U's midfield ticking. It seemed fitting somehow that it would be the former Academy of Football graduate would break the deadlock, and he did it with some aplomb with a 25-yard free kick that gave Raphael Spiegel little hope of getting gloves on it. Moncur had a good chance to double the lead just moments before half-time however Spiegel made a good save down to his left. Whatever was said at half-time seemed to have a desired effect as the Hammers came out with renewed vigour and intent. Nathan Mavila did superbly to beat his man allowing Jordan Brown a rare sight on goal. Goalkeeper Elliot Parish got hands to it and from the resulting corner Reece Oxford leapt highest only for it to go inches wide.

The young Hammers continued to press yet they could not find the final killer through ball. Cullen and Page were both industrious while Jordan Brown worked hard to work the back four. Their desire to draw level – in front of a 2485 strong travelling support – was evident, however this left them vulnerable at the back. The hosts had several chances to extend their lead yet a string of smart saves from Spiegel kept his side's chances alive. As the game wore on, both sides began to tire. Westley changed things round by bringing on a string of even younger players with the likes of Vashon Neufville and Marcus Browne in particular impressing. The hosts used their superior experience and physicality to good effect as they slowed the game down and ground out a win. Deserved perhaps, but plenty of positives for Westley and Hammers fans to take away.

Former on-loan striker Nene has claimed that he rejected an offer from West Ham to extend his stay at the Boleyn Ground. The 34-year-old Brazilian striker - who made eight substitute appearances during his three-month spell at the Boleyn last season - told L'Equipe that he had rejected the offer, as his brief stay at the club had not been a happy one. Still without a club since leaving Upton Park at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, Nene said: "Today, I look more towards Brazil and France. There is also West Ham, who want me back - but I didn't enjoy the experience in the time I was there. "I would prefer to return to France as I think I can play for another two or three years in Europe. France is my second home, where I spent the best years of my career. " Signed at the end of February on a free transfer, Nene failed to make a single start under Sam Allardyce. Since leaving east London he has also rejected an offer from the 2014/15 Greek Superleague champions Olympiacos.

Miralles going gets tough for Irons

EXCLUSIVE

West Ham are finding it tough going to prise Kevin Miralles out of Everton. The Hammers are particularly keen to grab the Belgian because whilst he is essentially a winger he can play in the middle of the attack if required. The Irons have made a second bid for the 27 year old in the region of £7 million but Everton are highly reluctant sellers. ClaretandHugh was told exclusively by a top insider: "They don't want to sell him. It's as simple as that – we have gone in twice but it's very tough going." It's been widely reported that the player is in the final year of his contract and that an offer of around the £7 million mark would get him out of Goodison. But ClaretandHugh was told: "Unfortunately, what hasn't been so widely reported is that Everton have a year's option in their favour so it's very hard."

Enner Valencia will be back in match action in ten days time. The Ecuador international striker has been away in The Ecuadorian has been away at the Copa America this summer and has been back in light training David Gold told ClaretandHugh however, that the striker is now stepping up his fitness programme and that he would be fit to return very soon – "within 10 days."
That means Valencia will be fit to play in the next round of the Europa Cup should the Irons get past the second leg of the Birkirkara clash successfully. Gold told us: "Enner has been in light training and is now stepping things up and is looking good but he had a busy summer and has taken things gently."

Leroy: 'We're moving up and it's so exciting'
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on July 21, 2015 in News, Whispers
C AND H

I'm not the slightest bit worried about how the Irons get through on Thursday night …so long as they get through! An awful lot was made of the fact that it was hard work at the Boleyn last week but when a team – however humble – decides to sit with nine behind the ball it's always seriously tough particularly at such an early stage in pre-season. But if anything, it should be easier in Malta because Birkirkara will be forced to come at us and that will open things up for the Irons. Throw the likes of Dimitri Payet and Martin Samuelsen into the mix and I'll be looking for a decent win although as I say, the manner of the performance isn't important – getting through is all that matters. PayetI like the business the owners are doing this summer. It looks to me as if they are trying to cover most positions with good players and I believe that the Hammers are moving to a different level. Payet of course looks outstanding and young Samuelsen a terrific prospect. It takes time to build a squad but we are getting there and there will be real competition for places. I do believe that we are seeing a club that is heading into the top eight developing and it's all extremely exciting. The owners have taken some stick down the years from some but I really believe these two guys are Hammers to their backbones and what's happening at Upton Park is to be applauded. We aren't always good at it but let's give credit where it's due. The two Davids brought in the right man at the time in Sam Allardyce and I believe that in Slaven Bilic – with the resources they are making available – will take us on to the next level. They were right to part company with Sam. He does what it says on the tin – keeps you up. In Slaven we will start playing some great football and move into the upper strata of the Premier League.

I'm convinced of it.

Manuel Lanzini will join Slaven Bilic's new regime at West Ham after signing from United Arab Emirates side Al Jazira. The 22-year-old is joining on a year-long loan, according to a Twitter post from his parent club, after the Irons agreed to sell Stewart Downing to Middlesbrough for £5million. The Hammers agreed a deal in principle to sign Argentine midfielder Lanzini from the Abu Dhabi-based club earlier this month. Likened to former Argentina star Pablo Aimar, Lanzini, who has an Italian passport, was considered by West Ham while at River Plate last summer but he moved to the Middle East instead for £5.25million. Lanzini scored eight goals in 24 appearances to help Jazira to a second-place finish in the Arabian Gulf League last season.

He has four caps for Argentina at Under-20 level and holds an Italian passport. The 22-year-old's arrival will strengthen the Hammers midfield already boosted by the additions of Pedro Obiang from Sampdoria and Dimitri Payet from Marseille. Slaven Bilic's priority now is to sign a striker and he is also looking for a winger after Stewart Downing was sold to Middlesbrough.

West Ham's Dimitri Payet will cause 'defensive chaos' next season, says Diego Poyet
Evening STandard
SAM LONG
Published: 21 July 2015 Updated: 09:53, 21 July 2015

New West Ham signing Dimitri Payet has been tipped to cause "defensive chaos" in the Premier League next season by Hammers team-mate Diego Poyet. The 28-year-old signed for the east London club from Marseille for a reported fee of £10.7 million earlier this summer and has enjoyed a blistering start to his career in England. The Frenchman produced a superb display on his debut in a pre-season friendly victory against League One outfit Southend United last Saturday, scoring two goals, one of which was a beautifully curled free kick. Although Payet's promising performance was produced in a non-competitive fixture, his arrival has sparked plenty of excitement amongst the Upton Park faithful, which Poyet has revealed is shared by the club's players. "What a player. Some of us had seen him play in the past, for others it was the first time," Poyet told the club's official website. "You can see what he can do. He's a great addition to the team and I'm sure he's going to create a lot of defensive chaos this year," declared the 20-year-old, who is the son of former Uruguay midfielder Gus. "It's very exciting for everyone, and it's the last season at the Boleyn Ground, so I'm sure it's going to be a great season for us," he told the club's official website. The Irons scored a total of 16 goals from midfield last season and the presence of Payet, who found the net on seven occasions during his final campaign in Ligue 1, will help to improve the goal threat of Slaven Bilic's side.

West Ham co-owner David Gold reveals striker Enner Valencia could be back in action next week
HITC
Damien Lucas

West Ham United striker Enner Valencia will give his side a much-needed boost by returning to action next week, according to co-owner David Gold. With their main goal threat Diafra Sakho suspended for the next two Europa League matches and Andy Carroll out injured, the Hammers looked well short up front last time out against Maltese minnows Birkirkara. It took a stoppage time goal from centre-back James Tomkins to spare Slaven Bilic's blushes and give the East Londoners a 1-0 lead to take to Malta on Thursday night. The poor performance in that first leg, particularly up front where forgotten man Modibo Maiga spurned his latest chance to impress in the first team, has seemingly prompted the club to press on with plans to sign a new striker. Queens Park Rangers star Charlie Austin and Manchester United's Javier Hernandez have both been heavily linked by the Mirror. But help may be at hand from closer to home after co-owner Gold revealed Ecuador striker Valencia could well be available for the Europa League third qualifying round, should the Hammers make it that far. Taking to social networking site Twitter, Gold responded to a question from a fan asking when the pacy forward, who has been busy playing in the Copa America for his country this summer, would be available. He said: "Valencia should be available for the next Europa game, should we progress to the next round."

The difference Valencia makes

While Valencia only got four goals in 32 games for the Hammers last season after signing for £12 million, there were several mitigating factors. He started life in the Premier League with a bang, who can forget that thunderbolt of a strike away at Hull City? The 25-year-old was coming off the back of a successful World Cup with his country and had forged a deadly partnership with Sakho as the Hammers made their best ever start to a Premier League season sitting fourth at Christmas. When the goals dried up he was shunted out wide by then manager Sam Allardyce and while his pace was still an asset he wasn't nearly as effective. His work rate off the ball and the fact he can run in behind at will means opposing teams are less likely to take a chance with a high-line so he is a valuable member of the team. Injuries played their part too, restricting him from really building up a head of steam under Allardyce, who many fans felt didn't play to his strengths. But big things will be expected of him this season and Bilic's more attack-minded, free-flowing style should suit the diminutive star more. One
thing is for sure based on West Ham's performance against Birkirkara last week - they sure could use him.

Report: West Ham resurrect interest in free agent Lassana Diarra, player wants move
HITC
Olly Dawes

West Ham have reportedly resurrected their interest in midfielder Lassana Diarra. According to the Daily Mail, West Ham have rekindled their interest in midfielder Lassana Diarra - and the player wants a move to Upton Park. Diarra, 30, is known for having played for the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Portsmouth in the Premier League, as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid during a successful career. Yet for the last year, Diarra has been sat on the sidelines having been left mired in a contractual battle with Lokomotiv Moscow, with the Frenchman claiming that he is a free agent and Lokomotiv saying they still own his contract. FIFA have now stepped in and have allowed Diarra to become a free agent this summer, which could be music to the ears of West Ham, after former boss Sam Allardyce admitted to BBC Sport in February that their move for Diarra had been blocked. The Daily Mail report that West Ham are indeed rekindling their interest in the holding midfielder, and the player is keen to make the move to Upton Park having spent time training with the club earlier in 2015.

What can Diarra bring to West Ham?

Having seen Alex Song return to Barcelona upon the expiration of his loan deal at Upton Park, the Hammers could try to bring in another veteran midfielder with Premier League experience.
Diarra may not be quite as physically impressive as his former Arsenal team-mate Song, but he possesses great passing ability and relentless work rate - aspects that could be appealing to new manager Slaven Bilic. Factor in that Diarra would be available on a free transfer, and this potential deal for Diarra begins to make a ton of sense for West Ham, who have already been busy in the transfer market this summer.

West Ham chief gives vital Enner Valencia update on puts date on strikers' return
London 24
06:45 21 July 2015 Brad Pinard

West Ham chairman David Gold has confirmed striker Enner Valencia should be fit to play in around 10 days. The Ecuadorian has been away at the Copa America this summer and then a short holiday break in order to get him back to West Ham in the best shape. After his first year in the Premier League, where he was a regular for West Ham, Valencia may be a little jaded after back to back summer tournaments too. However, with West Ham having so many games coming up, Valencia should have plenty of time to feature and Gold expects that to be in the Europa League third qualifying round next week, should the Hammers make it through.
