Canaries edge out Hammers

Danny Potts was on target again but the U18s were to come up short in a
close contest

Norwich City U18s 3-2 West Ham United U18s

The Academy side lost out to the odd goal for the second week running in a
spirited display away to Norwich City on Saturday. Danny Potts thought he
had given the Hammers a share of the spoils with a late equaliser, only for
Norwich to counter and get the decisive strike in added time. The loss
followed the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea seven days before but it is always
performances not points that ultimately count. Indeed, Tony Carr was not too
downhearted as the squad headed back down the A12, especially given the game
came at the end of a week where the likes of Potts and England U19's midweek
hero Robert Hall had continued to make individual progress - always the main
aim of the Academy's work. It had all started so brightly with Matthias
Fanimo putting the visitors in front after a well-taken move down the left
but the Canaries were able to level before the break. Norwich then thought
they had won it 2-1 with a goal after the interval only for Potts to pounce
four minutes from time.

The young defender - who was on the bench for the first team a week ago at
Hull City and struck a late equaliser for the development squad at
Gillingham on Tuesday - stayed up from a cleared corner and was on hand to
score when the ball was played back across goal. However, just as Carr and
coach Nick Haycock thought they had earned a deserved draw, Norwich showed
their strength to come back and win it by the odd goal in five. "It was a
disappointing end," Carr told whufc.com. "It wasn't to be for us today and
where we were getting the luck before, we are getting none at the moment.
"We had a great run at the start of the season and now we will have to work
our way through a sticky spell. We had one or two injuries to contend with
and Robert is now with the first team, but we also had Danny Potts and
Dominic Vose back in the side.

"Norwich are a strong team and it was a good open game. We had our moments
and so did they and in the end they nicked the points. We will come back
again and the boys have the incentive of an FA Youth Cup tie at Wolves to
come [next month]. They will all want to impress and get in the team for
that."

West Ham United: Larkins, Young, Potts, Hurley (T Tombides 75), K Lee,
Chambers, Turgott, Powell, E Lee, Vose (Miles 70), Fanimo

Redknapp in the dock

Former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp will stand trial next January over tax
evasion charges.

64-year-old Redknapp, who both played for and managed the Hammers during a
lengthy and colourful career faces the very real prospect of a custodial
sentence should he be found guilty.

The current manager of Tottenham Hotspur has long been asssociated with the
murkier side of football but was thought to be untouchable by many.

However that would now appear not to be the case and Redknapp - who was
widely-tipped to be the next manager of England - will face trial over
charges relating to his time as manager of Portsmouth FC along with former
Portsmouth owner Milan Mandaric.

Redknapp's indictment

Count one: Milan Mandaric and Henry James Redknapp, between the 1st day of
April 2002 and the 28th day of Nov 2007, at the material times respectively
the Chairman and the Football Manager of Portsmouth City Football Club
Limited, with intent to defraud and to the prejudice of HM Revenue and
Customs, arranged for $145,000, paid by Milan Mandaric as a result of or in
connection with Henry James Redknapp's employment and as a reward for
services, to be transferred to a Monaco bank account opened by Henry James
Redknapp for that purpose, in order to conceal the said emolument from HM
Revenue and Customs and evade the payment of Income Tax and National
Insurance Contributions thereon (whether by the operation of PAYE by the
club or otherwise).

Count two: Milan Mandaric, between the 1st day of May 2004 and the 28th day
of November 2007, at the material times the Chairman and the Football
Manager of Portsmouth City Football Club Limited, with intent to defraud and
to the prejudice of HM Revenue and Customs, arranged for $150,000, paid by
Milan Mandaric as a result of or in connection with Henry James Redknapp's
employment and as a reward for services, to be transferred to a Monaco bank
account opened by Henry James Redknapp for that purpose, in order to conceal
the said employment income from HM Revenue and Customs and evade the payment
of Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions thereon (whether by the
operation of PAYE by the club or otherwise).

Green light for retractable seating

Karren Brady has revealed plans for retractable seating for the Olympic
Stadium - should West Ham win tenancy of the venue. It has long been hoped
that the club could find some way of covering the unacceptable distance
between the stands and the pitch, in the event of West Ham moving to
Stratford post the 2012 Olympic Games. And for the first time Brady,
speaking in her column for the Sun revealed that plans were now in place for
retractable seating. "Members in the London Assembly are sceptical about
viewing football in the new Olympic Stadium," she said. "I've heard the
comment dozens of times before. But whereas the public don't have access to
plans for the 2014 occupation by a football club - hopefully West Ham -
members do. "And if they had taken the time to look they would have seen
that the design engineers have a solution by placing fans in retractable
seats right up to the touchlines, if required, to provide a fantastic
football solution whilst maintaining the track perfectly for athletics.
"That wasn't possible in stadiums like the old Wembley but technology and
the world moves on."

Brady's claims have since been backed by co-chairman David Gold, who told
his followers on Twitter this morning that "there will be some form of
retractable seating".

Loan deal falls through
KUMB.com

West Ham's attempts to sign a defender on loan ahead of next week's visit to
Coventry have proved fruitless so far. With Sam Allardyce down to just two
fit centre halfs, the manager has been busy trying to fill the void this
week. However vice chairman Karren Brady, speaking in her column for the Sun
today, revealed that none of the club's approaches have been successful.
"We're busy trying to borrow players to ease our injury woes," she said. "It
can be a complicated business as we found after the last-minute collapse of
negotiations for one from Man City. "In the Championship a club may make
three kinds of loan - standard (four under-23 and four over), emergency and
youth - and five may be named on a team sheet of 16.There's more like this
but I won't go on. "Now we are close to agreement with Arsenal for a foreign
defender. The problem is this could disqualify him from a permanent move
abroad in January and another move bites the dust."

The Manchester City player involved is thought to be Nedum Onuoha, who
celebrates his 25th birthday today. Onuoha, who has been on Sam Allardyce's
radar for a while is said to have rejected the opportunity to move south on
a temporary basis, despite having made just one appearance for City so far
this season.
