Westley - We'll dust ourselves down and get on with it
WHUFC.com

Terry Westley has challenged his U23 side to dust themselves down and move on after the young Hammers suffered a disappointing 7-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening.

West Ham, who had enjoyed an unbeaten start to the 2017/18 campaign were well beaten by a more experienced Spurs outfit. Playing in the Premier League International Cup for the very first time, Terry Westley made seven changes and ultimately, the inexperience in the side showed.

After two early Spurs goals, West Ham fought back and looked well in the match when trailing 2-1 at half time. However, five second half Tottenham goals in the space of 15 minutes killed off the tie. Incredibly, the Hammers were awarded no fewer than four penalties on the night but only made two of them count: the first through Anthony Scully and the second thanks to Toni Martinez.

"It wasn't a real game." Westley said.

"It's a very strange comment to make but in terms of talking about academy football, tonight was like having an 'eight v eight' in training and one team winning 7-0 and trying to convince the losing eight that they've actually done it properly.

"Still, all the talk at half time is 'you're right in the match', for the ones who haven't played 'go and take your opportunity and push on and you're going take something from the game'.

"By the end, all over the pitch we weren't quite right. We were going to use this competition as an opportunity for those players who haven't played yet but it did throw up a slight problem in the goalkeeping position. Our goalkeepers are on international duty and I feel sorry for the young lad who came in as we didn't give him too much protection."

Westley was quick to challenge his side to bounce back from the disappointment and use the game as a big learning curve.

"You always learn something. You learn about characters, who's really up for the game." He explained."

"We'll dust ourselves down and get on with it, nothing changes. If you're trying to strive to top performance, it's about repetitively doing the same thing, not feeling sorry for yourself.

"Tonight, we weren't good enough, we rolled over too easy, we were in the match at 2-1, we've missed two penalties – it's a game like something you've not see before – but we capitulated too easily in that second half and that was the disappointing thing. Now they've got to show us that, individually, they can get back in the team."

If there was one positive to take from the evening, Westley highlighted the performance of Grady Diangana; the winger was at the heart of all the attacking opportunities that West Ham enjoyed.

"From a pure development measurement, we had the best player on the pitch in Grady. He was possibly the best player out there in terms of what he did with and without the ball, so yes, we lost 7-2, but we had a player who I see real potential in and someone who is really improving."

Fonte, Fernandes and Trott all end night on winning side
WHUFC.com

Thursday night was mostly about winning for West Ham United's quartet of international representatives.

At senior level, Jose Fonte started as Portugal maintained their strong challenge in 2018 FIFA World Cup UEFA qualifying Group B with a 5-1 victory over the Faroe Islands in Porto.

Hammers centre-half Fonte was honoured before kick-off with a special plaque for reaching 25 caps for his country, as were midfielders Joao Mario and Andre Gomes.

When the match kicked-off, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick for the European champions, who were given a scare by their Scandinavian rivals.

However, Portugal's win was not enough to take them top of the group, as Switzerland made it seven wins out of seven with a 3-0 victory over Andorra in St Gallen.

There, West Ham's Edimilson Fernandes was introduced a 74th-minute substitute to earn third senior cap.

Switzerland remain top of Group B with 21 points, with Portugal second on 18. The group winners will qualify automatically for Russia 2018, with the runners-up almost certain to contest a two-legged play-off to join them.

The pair return to action on Sunday, when Switzerland travel to Latvia and Portugal head for Hungary.

Elsewhere, Nathan Trott made his England U20 debut in a 3-0 friendly victory over the Netherlands in Telford.

The goalkeeper started and watched the Young Lions produce a dominant performance at the Bucks Head, where England even had the luxury of missing a late penalty as they secured a comfortable win.

Trott and his fellow Young Lions head for Switzerland for a second friendly in Winterthur on Monday afternoon.

The only one of the quartet of Hammers to end Thursday on the losing side was Domingos Quina, whose Portugal U20s were beaten 3-0 by the Czech Republic in a friendly international in Abrantes.

Quina and his teammates will have a chance to bounce back when they travel to Rijnsburg to take on the Netherlands on Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere, England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed that Hammers stopper Joe Hart will be in goal when the Three Lions take on Malta in Ta'Qali in a World Cup UEFA Group F qualifier on Friday evening.

Trott hoping to follow in Joe Hart's England footsteps
WHUFC.com

West Ham United goalkeeper Nathan Trott is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Joe Hart and impress on the international stage this week as he teams up with England's U20s. Trott, who has helped the Club's U23s to three wins from their opening four matches this campaign, has been called-up to the young Lions squad to face the Netherlands and Switzerland in international friendlies. The stopper was part of the England U19 squad which was crowned UEFA U19 European Championship winners in the summer, and has been selected by manager Keith Downing once again for the matches which kick-off with a visit from the Netherlands on Thursday. And the 18-year-old has been taking as many tips in training from Hart – who has 71 senior international caps – as he can. He said: "With Joe's experience with England and in club football, you've only got the option to follow what he does and he's a great character on and off the pitch. "He also made a lot of appearances at the younger age-groups for England too, so that's also something to aspire to do myself. "He is a great professional and these are people that, as a young player, you must look up to. The way he commands and leads the team is on another level. He's also a top class goalkeeper! "Obviously it's always good to be back with the England squad, and so it's always a honour to represent England."

Trott did not make an appearance at the Championships in Georgia, playing second fiddle to AFC Bournemouth man Aaron Ramsdale. The keeper now, however, is hoping to catch the eye and get some minutes on the pitch after impressing so much for the Hammers so early in the season. "Hopefully I'll get to play my first game for England in the upcoming friendlies," he continued. "It's a great feeling knowing that your coaches have the confidence in you to play at the next level of international football. "The 23s ended the first month of the season very well and the team is in good spirits which was a perfect way to enter the international period and it's great for those going away with their national teams."

Training regularly with the first team and travelling to away games with Slaven Bilic's squad – as Trott did against Newcastle on Saturday – has enabled the youngster to really learn from the likes of Hart and Spaniard Adrian. "Being around the first team has really pushed me to become a better player," he explained. "The standard is really high so that benefits me a lot." "It's also good to know what happens inside the first team changing room and how the first team players prepare themselves before training and games. "It just prepares me for when it's my time to step and play first team football."

Westley - Martinez will bag goals
WHUFC.com

Academy Director, Terry Westley has backed Toni Martinez to have another free-scoring season in a West Ham United shirt. Martinez scored his first and second goals of the season on Sunday and Westley, speaking ahead of tonight's Premier League International Cup match with Tottenham Hotspur, told whufc.com that the Spaniard has all the attributes to improve on the 13 goals he netted in 2016-17. "Sunday helped his confidence and his belief" he explained. "If he continues to play at this level, he's going to end up in double figures without a shadow of doubt."

Martinez scored five times in August last season but had failed to score in any of West Ham's opening three matches of this campaign. His brief barren spell was ended in the 45th minute on Sunday when rifling the ball in to the roof of the net from close range after a well-worked one-two with Dan Kemp. "Toni is the type of a player – a Harry Kane dare I say it who apparently doesn't score in August - they know they're going to get goals." His celebration that followed told you all you needed to know about how much the goal meant to him as he sprinted back down the touchline to celebrate with the coaching staff and his teammates on the bench. For Westley though, his qualities have never been in doubt: "He is a goalscorer and, yes, that's what he's going to be judged on." "But every game he makes chances. Over the last few games he could have easily looked at the scoresheet and had six goals, so to get off the mark now gives him that confidence, but he's a constant threat."

At just 20 years of age, Martinez has been capped at youth level for Spain, already enjoyed a successful loan spell with League One outfit Oxford United and was a part of the two first team pre-season camps - most recently scoring in successive matches against Werder Bremen and Altona 93. It is therefore no wonder that big things are hoped of the former Valencia man, who Westley has likened to Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane. "Toni is the type of a player – a Harry Kane dare I say it who apparently doesn't score in August – they know they're going to get goals," he continued. "He is in that mould, he knows that sooner or later one is going to drop to him or he's going to rifle one in because he's always in and around the action. "He might miss some and you'll get frustrated with that, but as a coach you know, sooner or later, he's going to bag goals."

The Hammers begin their Premier League International Cup campaign against Tottenham Hotspur this evening. Kick-off is at 7:00pm and you can follow the action live here or on Twitter.

Masuaku sets target of helping DR Congo to World Cup finals
WHUFC.com

Arthur Masuaku has expressed his pride after receiving his maiden call-up for The Democratic Republic of the Congo. The West Ham United left-back has been included in the Leopards' squad for a vital 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification double-header with Tunisia. DR Congo sit top of CAF Group A and know two victories over their North African rivals will secure the nation's second-ever trip to a World Cup finals, and first since qualifying as Zaire in 1974. Florent Ibenge's squad travel to Rades on Friday before welcoming the Carthage Eagles to Kinshasa next Tuesday.

Born in the French city of Lille to Congolese parentes, Masuaku played age-group football for France before switching his international allegiance to the Central African country in June this year. "I'm very proud to have the opportunity to play for the country where my parents were born," said West Ham's No26. "My mother and father and all my family and friends are very proud, too. "I'm looking forward to the next two weeks and the games with Tunisia, as we have a big target, which is qualifying for the 2018 World Cup."

Masuaku will become the second Hammer to represent DR Congo at international level, following fellow left-back Herita Ilunga, who appeared five times for Leopards between 2008-10. The 23-year-old is one of six English-based players named in Ibenge's squad for the Tunisia ties, alongside Fulham's Neeskens Kebano, Gillingham's Gabriel Zakuani, Newcastle United's Chancel Mbemba, Birmingham City winger Jacques Maghoma, AFC Bournemouth striker Benik Afobe and Huddersfield Town forward Elias Kachunga. DR Congo's star names include Villarreal forward Cedric Bakambu and Junior Kabananga, who started both legs of Kazakh side Astana's recent UEFA Champions League qualifiers with Scottish club Celtic. "I think we have a very good group of players who can achieve our goals," Masuaku confirmed. DR Congo and Tunisia go into the double-header with six points apiece from two matches, with the former sitting top on goal difference. Group A also consists of Guinea and Libya, who have both games they have played so far.

The Leopards travel to Libya in October before completing their qualification campaign at home to Guinea in November.

Fans furious at Quina loan deal

Hammers fans have reacted with astonishment to the news that West Ham are set to allow Academy star Domingos Quina to join Sheffield United on a season-long loan. It was only a decade ago that the Blades successfully sued West Ham for circa £30million having been relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2006/07 season, blaming West Ham and Carlos Tevez (who failed to score in his first 20 games for the club). Yet despite that travesty of justice, West Ham have bizarrely agreed to allow the teenage forward to join the Championship club on loan for the duration of the 2017/18 season, according to reports.
Not surprisingly, the decision has upset many West Ham supporters who believe that as a result of the Tevez affair, the club should refuse to entertain any contact or business with the Yorkshire club.

"Just sums up the board and how much regard they have for the club and its fans," wrote David Clerihew on Twitter - a somewhat milder response than that of Ossie BM6, who said he would be "fucking furious if it goes ahead. Should never be talking to them."

"Surely there must be someone else that would want him?" asked Dan Adams, who added "we should never deal with them or Tottenham". Whilst fellow Hammers fan Kevin added: "Couldn't make it up. I despair about our club with those clowns in charge."

Diafra Sakho looks certain to remain a West Ham player come the end of today's transfer window - despite having flown himself to France earlier this week in order to try and force a move to Rennes. Sakho took the unusual step of travelling to France without permission from West Ham in order to agree terms with Rennes, who had not been given permission to discuss terms with the player. David Gold reacted to the news by insisting last night that Sakho would be remaining at West Ham - which led to the 27-year-old failing to attend training this morning. Crystal Palace are also understood to have made a £10million offer for the striker, whose contract expires at the end of the current season.

Championship club Birmingham are trying to secure Hammers target Jack Wilshere on loan for the rest of the season. The West Ham-supporting Arsenal midfielder has been linked with a move to the Olympic Stadium for some time, although West Ham are still to make an official approach for the 25-year-old Arsenal player.
And that has allowed former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp, currently in charge at St Andrew's to step in and attempt to stage something of a coup by persuading Wilshere to drop a division. Meanwhile Redknapp is trying to secure a deal for another former Hammer, with Alex Song currently locked in talks with Birmingham regarding a potential loan move. The former Cameroon international has spent the last two season playing his football for Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League.

West Ham and Spurs battle for Barca star

West Ham are locked in a two-way battle with Tottenham to sign Portuguese international Andre Gomes. The 24-year-old midfielder was voted as the worst signing in Spain last season by readers of Marca earlier this year following his €35million move from Valencia to Barcelona, for whom he made 47 appearances.
However Gomes could be on his way to West Ham as a deadline day alternative to William Carvalho, who appears to be no closer to joining the Irons despite having expressed a preference to move to London. Tottenham, like West Ham have also held exploratory talks with the player and his representatives, who will decide in the next few hours where the Portuguese international will spend the rest of the season. West Ham's bid to sign Carvalho appear to be doomed, with his current club Sporting refusing to reduce their €40million asking price.

Diafra Sakho wants West Ham exit
By Sky Sports News

Diafra Sakho wants to leave West Ham and has not turned up for training on Thursday, according to Sky sources. The 27-year-old passed a medical and agreed personal terms over a move to French side Rennes, despite no fee being agreed between the clubs and co-owner David Gold insisting he was not for sale. Sky Sports News understands Sakho is flying back to England on Thursday afternoon and wants face-to-face talks with West Ham's owners. It is also understood that such talks would be difficult to hold with co-owner David Sullivan currently away on holiday. "I have had a frustrating time for the past couple of seasons. I want a fresh start and I want to get back to playing regular football," Sakho told Sky Sports News. "I have got no issues with West Ham or West Ham fans. This is purely a footballing decision. I want to go back to France."
Sakho, who joined West Ham from Metz in 2014, has less than 11 months remaining on his current contract. The Senegal international enjoyed a prolific first season in England, netting 12 times in 26 matches. But he has since endured an injury-hit period, with persistent back and hamstring injuries restricting to just 32 appearances in three seasons. Despite this, he has still attracted offers from Sunderland and West Brom in recent transfer windows.

West Ham midfielder Domingos Quina is closing in on a loan move to Sheffield United, according to Sky sources. Quina is expected to undergo a medical on Deadline Day ahead of a season-long loan switch to Sky Bet Championship. The 17-year-old joined West Ham from Chelsea last summer with manager Slaven Bilic promoting him immediately to the first- team squad, playing twice in the Hammers' Europa League qualifying campaign before the Premier League season began.
Quina has since attracted renewed interest from Arsenal, who offered a contract to him before he joined West Ham on a contract until 2019. He has represented Portugal at U17, U18 and U19 level and was part of the team that won the 2016 UEFA European U17 Championships.

Everton have rejected a loan offer from West Ham for winger Kevin Mirallas, according to Sky sources. Sky Sports News understands Everton have received a number of offers to take the Belgium international on loan, including from the Hammers and Mirallas' former side Olympiakos. It is also understood Everton would only consider offers for a permanent deal. West Ham are keen to bolster their midfield options having allowed Robert Snodgrass to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan. Mirallas has featured four times this season for Everton, but was left out of the matchday squad for last Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea with manager Ronald Koeman questioning his attitude. Koeman said: "Mirallas was out because he is struggling to deal with moments in the season and with disappointments.
"Everybody can be disappointed but I expect from everybody to be part of the team and if somebody is showing that his attitude is not the same, I make decisions." Mirallas joined Everton from Olympiakos in 2012 and has featured 177 times for the club, scoring 38 goals. He has three years remaining on his current contract at Goodison Park.

West Ham keep hold of Diafra Sakho after forward told officials he wanted exit

Diafra Sakho will not be leaving West Ham despite spending two days trying to push through a move, say Sky sources. The 27-year-old faced an anxious wait in the final stages of Deadline Day after telling West Ham officials why he wanted to end his Hammers career. He passed a medical and agreed personal terms on Wednesday over a move to French side Rennes, despite no fee being agreed between the clubs. Co-owner David Gold insisted their forward was not for sale and said he was integral to the club's plans this season. However, Sakho flew back to England on Thursday afternoon and spoke to a Hammers representative on the phone to discuss his situation, before visiting Chelmsford racecourse as his advisers watched their horse Siege of Boston in action.
A meeting then took place on Thursday evening between Sakho, his advisers and West Ham at London Stadium. The Premier League club representatives were told that Sakho wanted to leave because of "personal problems which have nothing to do with football". By the time Deadline Day concluded, it was understood that all issues had been resolved and Sakho might now be offered a new deal. Sakho has insisted he remains proud to play for West Ham, has total respect for the club and the fans. He also wanted to make it clear that he targeted a move to Rennes because of a personal problem but now understands why he has to stay.
Earlier this week, Sakho told Sky Sports News: "I have had a frustrating time for the past couple of seasons. I want a fresh start and I want to get back to playing regular football. "I have got no issues with West Ham or West Ham fans. This is purely a footballing decision. I want to go back to France."

Kazaiah Sterling scored twice as Tottenham's Under-23s thrashed West Ham United on Thursday night in Stevenage. Tottenham goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman also had a night to remember as he saved two out of four penalties as Group F of the Premier League International Cup got underway. It took just 11 minutes for Tottenham to get off the mark. Christian Maghoma put his side ahead when he met Joe Pritchard's cross and directed his header powerfully into the West Ham goal. Sterling got his first of the evening two minutes after Maghoma had scored. Shilow Tracey got into space on the right before crossing for Sterling to score from a central position. West Ham had a chance to get back into the game when they were awarded a penalty after Maghoma fouled Jahmal Hector-Ingram.
Joe Powell took the spot kick but his effort was saved by Whiteman.

MATCH FACTS

Tottenham: Whiteman; Marsh (Lock, 69), Lyons-Foster, Amos, Maghoma, Duncan, Shashoua (Tsaroulla, 83), Tracey (Loft, 69), Sterling, Georgiou, Pritchard
Goals: Maghoma 11, Sterling 13, 63, Pritchard 52, Shashoua 59, 68, Duncan 65

West Ham: Bishop; Pike, Neufville, Makasi, Akinola, Wells, Powell (Holland, 65), Sylvestre (Henry, 74), Hector-Ingram, Scully (Martinez, 65) Diangana
Goals: Scully 28 pen, Martinez 81 pen

The Hammers did get on the scoresheet 28 minutes into the game when Anthony Scully converted from the spot kick. Tottenham, however, turned on the style in the second half. First Pritchard added a third before Samuel Shashoua got a fourth and Sterling doubled his tally to extend Tottenham's lead to 5-1. Dylan Duncan scored Tottenham's sixth of the night and Shashoua made it seven after a brilliant solo run. With 10 minutes to play, Whiteman saved yet another penalty when he dived to punch Antonio Martinez's strike over the Tottenham bar. The Hammers did get a goal back before the end. Referee Alan Young pointed to the spot Martinez went down the middle this time and Whiteman couldn't stop it from going in.

West Ham transfer news: Diafra Sakho to STAY after talks, offered new deal - Solehkol
DIAFRA SAKHO is STAYING at West Ham after holding positive talks with club chiefs at the London Stadium.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solehkol, who reckons he could even be offered a new deal. Sakho, 27, went AWOL after failing to turn up to West Ham training this morning. The Senegal international apparently had a medical at French side Rennes with personal terms also agreed upon. But West Ham, who were unaware of a proposed deal with Rennes, pulled the plug on the transfer and requested he return to the London Stadium to hold crunch talks over his future.
Sakho, who was in attendance at Chelmsford racecourse with his representatives, cited personal problems behind wanting a move away from east London. But despite all this deadline day drama, Solehkol has confirmed he is staying at West Ham as the club have reached a solution over his issues. On Twitter, Solehkol said: "Diafra Sakho staying at West Ham after talks. May be offered new deal. "Club understand his personal problems. He's proud to play for WHUFC".
He also revealed that Sakho won £550 at Chelmsford races after putting on a £100 bet on his agent's horse Siege of Boston. Solehkol added: "West Ham forward Diafra Sakho landed a touch during visit to Chelmsford races today. "Put £100 on agent's horse Siege of Boston and won £550." Sakho has fallen down the pecking order at West Ham following the arrival of Javier Hernandez. The Mexico international arrived from Bayer Leverkusen £14million earlier this summer.

West Ham superfan James Corden, who normally keeps quiet on all things football, hasn't done so this time around after the Hammers failed to make a deadline day signing. West Ham fans were hoping to tie up a couple of deadline day deals - at least one for William Carvalho - but it seems that nothing is going to happen in the final few minutes of the window. The Hammers were seemingly unwilling to part with £35-£40m for Carvalho and talks with another Portuguese midfielder, Andre Gomes, also broke down as Spurs entered the race.

Domingos Quina's proposed loan move to Sheffield United broke down before last night's transfer deadline. The West Ham youngster was reportedly scheduled to undergo a medical in South Yorkshire yesterday but talks between the two clubs are understood to have stalled during the closing stages of the window. Although the exact reason behind United's decision to abort the deal remains unclear, manager Chris Wilder has previously stated that he will not process any agreement which guarantees a player first team football at Bramall Lane. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jamal Blackman, signed on loan from Spurs and Chelsea respectively, both agreed to compete for a starting place in United's squad.

West Ham, desperate for a defensive midfielder following the breakdown of their efforts to sign William Carvalho, were today hoping to seal a loan deal with Barcelona for Andre Gomes. Hammers co-owner David Sullivan was working hard to bring 24-year-old Gomes to the London Stadium, following the failure to agree a fee with Sporting Lisbon for fellow Portugal international Carvalho. Gomes spent three years at Benfica and was a member of the team who won the domestic treble in 2013-14 before joining Valencia, initially on loan and then in a permanent deal.
Barcelona signed him in 2016 for £31.5million, and although he has made 30 appearances for the La Liga giants, he has failed to hold down a regular spot in the side. Gomes was a member of the squad who won Euro 2016 but, unlike Carvalho, did not feature in the final against France. West Ham manager Slaven Bilic, under increasing pressure after failing to win a league game this season and seeing his side concede 10 goals, will be hoping that a loan deal for Gomes can be finalised before the window closes. The East London club had been pursuing Carvalho, their first choice, for much of the summer, but could not agree a fee. Sporting were adamant they wanted close to £40m for the player — about £5m more than West Ham were prepared to pay.

West Ham are being linked with a host of players on the final day of the summer transfer window but ti look as if it might end up being a quiet day. The Hammers are reportedly engaged in talks with three midfielders over a move to the London Stadium in the final 11 hours of the window but a lot of talk is around the future of Diafra Sakho. With the club rooted to the bottom of the table, the Hammers fans are desperate for some good news and strengthening the quad but what do we know so far?

William Carvalho

The deal has dragged on for more than three weeks now and it seems as if nothing is going to happen. Sporting are demanding £40m for the defensive midfielder and West Ham simply don't want to part with that sort of cash, with football.london understanding the club doesn't want to hand Slaven Bilic that kind of cash.
It looks as if any deal to sign the Portuguese international - who is in the squad for their clash with the Faroe Islands this evening - may well be off but Carvalho desperately wants the move.

Andre Gomes

The Hammers are reportedly in loan discussions with the other Portuguese midfielder over the Barcelona star, with the Catalan giants willing to get rid. It was initially thought a loan deal could do it but ow it seems only a permanent one will do for Barcelona and that could rule the Hammers out. It has also been reported West Ham were trying to negotiate a loan deal where they would guarantee Gomes played 70% of the clubs games this season in return for Barca footing the players wages.

Jack Wilshere

The Arsenal midfielder is apparently very keen on a move to the club he supported as a kid and has instructed his agent to get talks going between the two parties. Any move would only be a loan deal.

Diafra Sakho

The striker is on his way back to London after his 36 hour exile in France trying to force through a move to Rennes. The Hammers do not want to sell the striker, he wants to go though, and will tell the club as such when het gets back and hands in a request. The Hammers are still expected to reject the request as they don't believe they have time to find a suitable replacement but this one could drag on until the bitter end.
