Sam Allardyce is relishing the upcoming games against Chelsea and Arsenal
this weekend
21.12.2014
West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce championed his squad's strength in
depth as the high flying Hammers prepare to face Chelsea and Arsenal in the
space of three days. Allardyce's men extended their good run of form with a
convincing 2-0 win over Leicester City, courtesy of a well taken finish from
Andy Carroll and a superb curling effort from Stewart Downing. The win
maintains West Ham's fourth place position in the Premier League table with
an impressive 31 points from 17 matches, and Big Sam is relishing the
opportunity to play Jose Mourinho's Chelsea. "It's a nice time to be playing
Chelsea and Arsenal. Our draw away at Chelsea last season was our turning
point, from then we kicked on and stayed up. So it was huge. "They're two
tough games but we have earned the right to have a go at both them. The
cream on top of our cake this season has been the wins over Manchester City
and Liverpool so we know we're capable of getting something from these
games."
Speaking ahead of the Hammers' trip to Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day,
Allardyce heaped praise on Downing after he netted his fourth goal of the
campaign on Saturday. "Stewart has been our most creative and best player by
far. He scored a great goal against Leicester as well. His performances have
been outstanding on a consistent basis. It's not just about his goals but
also the chances he's been creating for everyone else. "He's probably
playing his best football ever at the moment. It's huge for him because he
loves his football and he's a fantastic professional."
Another positive for Allardyce and West Ham fans alike is the impact Andy
Carroll has had since returning from a lengthy spell out due to injury. The
England international scored his third goal of the season when he ran onto
Paul Koncheskey's short back pass and neatly clipped it over the onrushing
goalkeeper Ben Hamer. "It was a very composed finish from Andy. I was very
pleased that he put that in because he missed an easier chance earlier on. I
think he showed how quick he is over the ground, he didn't allow the
defender a chance to get close to him. "Andy's match fit now, he's back and
everyone can see it. Him and Diafra Sakho look like they're starting a great
partnership, if not those two then we have Enner Valencia, Carlton Cole and
Mauro Zarate so my options are fabulous and it might be the reason why we
stay where we are. "When they get in to the team, they know they're going to
have to score. If they stop scoring they're not going to stay in, that's the
bottom line at the moment."

Kouyate: Hammers fourth on merit
WHUFC.com
Cheikhou Kouyate believes West Ham United are well worth fourth spot in the
Barclays Premier League
22.12.2014
Cheikhou Kouyate says West Ham United are good value for their lofty
Barclays Premier League position, with the Hammers celebrating Christmas in
fourth spot for the very first time in the competition's 22-year history.
Saturday's 2-0 victory over struggling Leicester City means Sam Allardyce's
men have now bagged 13 points from the last 15 available, with the
foundations laid for three festive fixtures in just seven days. While the
Hammers were made to work hard for the spoils at the Boleyn Ground, the
Senegal midfielder expected nothing less against a Foxes side scrapping for
their top-flight lives.
He told West Ham TV: "Saturday was an important win and it was tough until
the very end because we were faced with a team who desperately want to win
points. Fortunately, we scored in the first half, which has made the game
easier and we took the three points.
"It's normal for it to become a bit nervous at the end because fatigue sets
in and we'd given everything during those first 80 minutes. So you'd expect
to have that weakness, but thankfully Adrian protected his clean sheet for
us. This is a victory for us as a team. The most important thing was to win
the match and to put us in even better shape for the games to come. "We
deserve to be fourth, it's more than deserved! We've worked hard throughout
the season and done everything to keep this place."
Kouyate, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Sunday, was quick to heap
praise on his colleagues, not least goalscorers Andy Carroll and Stewart
Downing, from whom he is expecting more of the same. He continued: "They
were two great goals and I'm happy for them both because they're guys who
work for that, to make that happen. It bodes well for us that they're going
to continue to score goals like that in the future."
The once Anderlecht favourite is also enjoying the commanding and calming
presence of Alex Song alongside him in midfield. The Barcelona loanee was
imperious once again at the weekend and Kouyate is taking note. "Song
calms the game down. To have someone with his experience, who knows how to
keep the ball and calm the game is a bonus for us, particularly for me as
I'm learning plenty by his side. It's good for the team."
Next up for Kouyate and company is a trip to take on leaders Chelsea at
Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day, a challenge that the No8 will be confronting
head on. "We've nothing to lose at Chelsea because we're playing the best
team in the league, in the country. They're first and it's no fluke. We'll
go there with nothing to lose and without fear. If we're fearful, we're
better off staying at home! This is football and we shouldn't forget it,
we've got to enjoy it and we're going there to do just that."

Hammers visit Richard House

A number of West Ham United stars visited local children's hospice Richard
House last week
22.12.2014
A host of West Ham United stars visited Richard House Children's Hospice
last week in order to spread some Christmas cheer to the patients and staff.
Mark Noble is a patron of the Beckton-based Hospice and he was joined by
fellow first-team players Morgan Amalfitano, Andy Carroll, Aaron Cresswell,
Guy Demel, Jussi Jaaskelainen and Carl Jenkinson in visiting the facility
for children and young adults with life-limiting health conditions. During
the visit the players were busy handing out West Ham goodie bags as well as
signing autographs and having their picture taken with the children and
their parents. The players also enjoyed an afternoon of helping the patients
to make Christmas decorations to be hung around the Hospice.
Richard House patron Noble said: "I have been a patron of Richard House for
a few years now. I lived in Beckton for many years myself so to come back
every year as I do, give some presents out and see the kids is an honour for
me. "To look after local places like this, and support the phenomenal job
the carers and staff do needs to be honoured and I'm glad that we do in this
way."
Richard House chief executive Peter Ellis was delighted to play host to the
Hammers. He said: "Our link with the Club started several years ago as we're
very closely located. "Mark Noble is a patron of the charity, as is Joe Cole
and they continue to be absolutely wonderful in their support of Richard
House. "Having the players at Richard House made everyone very excited. West
Ham, east London, what more can I say? It's part of the culture here and a
huge part of the community. For everyone involved, the children, the
families and the staff it's very exciting."
Defender Carl Jenkinson added: "It's the first time I've been to Richard
House hospice and it's great to meet kids like this - they're lovely lads
and it's nice to spend time around them at the Christmas period."

Doneil Henry has been granted a work permit and is set to join West Ham
imminently. The 21-year-old central defender is understood to have received
the green light a short while ago and will become Sam Allardyce's first
signing of the January window. Speaking abuot Henry earlier, Allardyce said:
"He's recommended to me by my captain at Blackburn Rovers, Ryan Nelsen, who
managed him at Toronto. "When you get the recommendation of somebody you
respect like Ryan Nelsen, you don't ignore that advice."

It was revealed last night that West Ham are playing a similar percentage of
long balls as last season. The BBC's Match of the Day programme provided an
infographic on its Match of the Day 2 programme last night which revealed
that Sam Allardyce's class of 14/15 play almost as many long passes as last
year's oft-criticised side.
A number of supporters have suggested that Andy Carroll's reintroduction to
the side has resulted in more direct football being played.
Whilst our table below indicates Carroll's name appearing mostly in the
upper half, it also reveals that the percentages and number of long passes
are relatively similar regardless of the personnel selected - with the
exception of the home win over Manchester City and the 2-2 draw at Hull
(both featuring a forward pair of Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia).
West Ham United: long passes this season

Winston Reid unaffected by contract talks
KUMb.com

Winston Reid says that contract talks are not top of agenda - but insisted
that he'll continue to give everything for the club whilst he remains here.
The Kiwi centre half is out of contract at the end of this season and almost
certainly set to leave West Ham on a free transfer in June. Despite a fresh
new offer remaining on the table from the club, Reid is in no hurry to sign
- but he insists it's not something that will impact upon his contribution
to the team. "It doesn't really affect me," he told the Recorder's Dave
Evans. "It's just one of those things that has been going on in the
background. "I know where I am and just get on with it and I have always
given 100 per cent for this club for as long as I have been here and I will
continue to do that. It is not something that bothers me, it is just part of
footballer and it is no big drama." The win over Leicester - in which Reid
once again played a key role - ensures West Ham remain in the top four at
Christmas for the first time in nearly 30 years. However Reid insists that
there is more to come from Big Sam's side.
"That was not the best we have played this season," he added. "But winning
when you are not playing well is a sign of a good team."

Cresswell signals attacking intentions
KUMB.com

Aaron Cresswell says West Ham will have a go at Chelsea when the two meet at
Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day. The current league leaders' record in the
league at home this season reads played eight, won eight. However that won't
stop the in-form Hammers from taking the game to the Blues, according to
left back Cresswell. "Chelsea look like they're going to win the league this
year but we are going to go there full of confidence," he said after West
Ham's 2-0 win over Leicester on Saturday. "We are not going to sit back and
try to defend. We are going to attack them. We've got a big enough squad to
handle the Christmas games."
United's win against the Foxes ensured Big Sam's boys remain in the top four
at Christmas for the first time in Premier League history and for the first
time in the top flight since the 1985/86 season, in which West Ham
eventually finished third behind Champions Liverpool and runners-up Everton.
* Since 2009, only one team in the top four at Christmas has failed to
finish there by the end of the season (Aston Villa).

SAM THOUGHTS ON GOALS ON SUNDAY
By Sean Whetstone 22 Dec 2014 at 13:20
West Ham till I Die
Speaking on Goals on Sunday, Hammers manager Sam Allardyce gave his thoughts
on finishing top six this season and the merry go round of sacking managers.
"I think that everyone knows that the spending power generally is the top
four of the Premier League, it's is very difficult to break into the top
four if you haven't got the same spending power as them, it's difficult,
lots of us have lived on the fringes in the past, I did the same at Bolton
for the last two or three years, to try and get there was something that
would of been beyond the club's or the owners will at the time for the
spending power you need to perhaps fund for it. This season it's about
enjoying the position we've in and seeing at the end of January whether we
reset our own goals to see if we can finish in the top six, Is it possible?
If we are going to finish in the top six then we are going to have to
recalculate our lads presentation to show them what they are going have to
do between now and the end of the season to finish [in the top six]. At this
moment in time if we carry on the way we are we are predicted a top four
finish but whether we will or whether we won't is another matter. I think
everyone has understand that we are well into the second year of financial
fair play or financial restrictions so we are all in a much more difficult
position when every window comes on the limit of spending power, not just
transfer fees but wages today and that is across the board now. When it
comes to January it's not that ask the owners to go and find this amount of
money or that amount of money if they wanted to, if they wanted to they
could perhaps do it but at the end of the season they may end up with a
pretty hefty fine, we have got those restrictions I would say one top player
if he became available would be something we would pursue but maybe somebody
would have to leave to fund or help fund that player. I think there is no
point in bringing in anybody less than a top player because want we have now
is top drawer at the minute. We have got 22 players that are all fighting
for places in the team"
Sam went on to speak about the problem of sacking managers because the club
owners and fans want instant overnight success
"You can't keep asking football clubs and fans can't keep asking football
clubs to be instantly successful over night and keep on signing 7-8-9
players every year and that seems to be the norm now, we've done well by
settling them in, how many managers have lost their job by doing that, Paolo
Di Canio at Sunderland, he bought 11 in and none of that gelled, Tottenham,
they didn't gel, Liverpool, they haven't gelled! Everyone is going What's
going on? So many new players into a new football club is a mammoth task to
get the best out of them instantly but everyone expects that and that is why
the impatience stops growth at football clubs, stops development and stops
managers ultimately doing a good job for the football club, because of too
many sackings, not this year in the Premier League but everywhere else in
the Championship, in league 1 they are getting fired left, right and centre.
There is such a lack of stability there which stops sustainable success"

Pressure is off West Ham ahead of 'free hits' against Chelsea and Arsenal,
says Allardyce
Dec 21, 2014 22:30 By Neil McLeman
The Hammers will enjoy Christmas Day in the Champions League spots after
Saturday's 2-0 victory over Leicester City at Upton Park
The Mirror
In the space of 11 months, Sam Allardyce has dragged West Ham from the 19th
Century into the Champions League places. And now the Irons boss has no wish
to turn back the clock as he returns to face Jose Mourinho at Stamford
Bridge. Last January Big Sam was scrapping for his job after poor cup exits
to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest with his side in the bottom three.
But a battling goalless draw at Stamford Bridge was the start of the
recovery – even if Mourinho branded the display as "football from the 19th
Century". Now after this comfortable win over a Leicester side who look like
history under Nigel Pearson, Allardyce will take his side back across London
on Boxing Day spoiling for a fairer fight. And seeking to avoid this amazing
campaign again changing course in SW6. "We'll wait and see," said the
Hammers boss with a smile. "Last year was the turning point – the draw at
Chelsea was eventually the reason we stayed up. That's how important it was.
"It gave the lads a huge confidence boost and a huge belief that they could
hold a team like Chelsea off. We went from there to make ourselves safe in
the league. We'll see what century we're in when we finish there this time."
Aaron Cresswell, one of the summer signings who has rejuvenated the side,
insisted this game will be different. "We are going to go there full of
confidence," said the ex-Ipswich full-back. "We are not going to go there,
sit back and try to defend. We are going to go and attack them. "We've got a
big enough squad to handle the Christmas games. We are full of confidence
and looking to take three points off any team."
The last time West Ham were in the top four at Christmas was in 1985-86 when
they finished third under John Lyall. The next two matches against Chelsea,
then Arsenal, will give a big clue as to whether they have the same staying
power this time. Yet bullish Allardyce claimed the double-header could be
"free hits" after his side picked up 31 points from the first 17 games. "We
challenge Chelsea and Arsenal on the back of what we've done up till now,"
he said. "It eases the pressure on us, the fact we can go there and see if
we can challenge ourselves against two of the big boys in this league and
see if we can get any points off them. "As difficult as it might be, I think
the lads are confident enough to think they have the capabilities of doing
it. "If we don't, it's not going to be too much of a knock, because we know
we can catch it up by beating teams who are below us, like Leicester, which
we've done well this year. "And the cream on top of our cake up till now is
the fact we beat Manchester City here and we beat Liverpool here. It's a
nice time, I think, for us to be playing Chelsea and Arsenal."
This lively match showed why West Ham are fourth – and Leicester must now
strive to become only the third team to avoid the drop after being bottom at
Christmas. The Foxes competed well until former Hammer Paul Konchesky left
his backpass short and Andy Carroll pounced for his first Premier League
goal with his feet since April 2013. Stewart Downing then took his tally to
four goals this season with his 56th-minute curler when he was given too
much time on the edge of the box. And even when Pearson made a triple change
after an hour, Hammers keeper Adrian made stunning saves from subs David
Nugent and Leonardo Ulloa. "It's still early doors but we'll take fourth
position after 17 games," added Cresswell.

Arsenal target Winston Reid ignoring West Ham exit speculation
Dec 22, 2014 22:30 By Mirror Football, Joe Mewis

The Mirror
Winston Reid insists he is not affected by all the speculation surrounding
his future at West Ham and says he will continue to give 100 per cent for
the club this season. Reid has yet to agree a new contract with the east
London club and can walk away as a free agent at the end of the season. The
New Zealand international has been one of the star performers for West Ham
over the last few years and has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal
in January. But despite the uncertainty surrounding his future at Upton
Park, Reid is adamant the contract situation is not playing on his mind and
he will continue to show his best form for Sam Allardyce as the club look to
maintain their position in the top four.

West Ham hoping to sign Canadian defender Doneil Henry after recommendation
from Ryan Nelsen
Dec 21, 2014 22:30 By Neil McLeman
The 21-year-old trained at Upton Park prior to the MLS season, and Sam
Allardyce wants to bring him to East London after advice from his former
captain
The Mirror
West Ham hope to complete the signing of Canada defender Doneil Henry this
week after a recommendation from his former Toronto boss Ryan Nelsen. The
21-year-old, who was signed by Apollon Limassol earlier this year and then
loaned back to the MLS, faces a tribunal to earn a work permit. Henry
trained with the Irons before the start of the MLS season. Sam Allardyce
said: "He's recommended to me by my captain at Blackburn Rovers, who managed
him at Toronto. "When you get the recommendation of somebody you respect
like Ryan Nelsen, you don't ignore that advice. That's the best advice you
could get." Winston Reid is out of contract at the end of the season
although the Hammers manager has insisted he will not be sold in the January
window.

Alex Song 'poised to inform' West Ham that he will playing the African Cup
of Nations
HITC
Olly Dawes
West Ham United midfielder Alex Song is set to tell the club that he will
play at the African Cup of Nations. In January, the African Cup of Nations
is back, meaning a number of players from the Premier League will head off
to Equatorial Guinea for a mid-season tournament which frustrates managers
up and down the country. We'll see the likes of Yaya Toure, Wilfried Bony
and Papiss Cisse leave English football for up to a month in order to
represent their countries. Unfortunately for West Ham, they appear to be the
team hit with the biggest departures. Only Newcastle have as many players
going to the competition (3), but a case can be made that the Hammers'
absentees are of much more importance. Midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate and
striker Diafra Sakho will both be representing Senegal next month, but the
situation surrounding Alex Song has been a confusing one. The 27-year-old
said that the tournament shouldn't go ahead because of the ongoing ebola
crisis in West Africa, and West Ham were keen for him to stay and help them
continue their fine start to the season.
Yet now, according to the Telegraph, Song is poised to inform West Ham that
he will be going with Cameroon to play in the tournament - which is a huge
blow for West Ham boss Sam Allardyce. Song has been outstanding since
joining the Hammers on loan from Barcelona, and could now miss up to a month
of action given that he will have to join up with the Cameroon squad in
advance of the competition.

Lassana Diarra 'unlikely' to join QPR, training with West Ham's head of
medicine
HITC
Tim Poole
The free agent has also been linked with Celtic this season. Lassana Diarra
is 'unlikely' to join Queens Park Rangers in January, according to the Daily
Mail. The west London club are expected to deal in free transfer and loan
deals during the winter window but the Mail state that Diarra has options to
return back to Russia. The Frenchman has been linked with Celtic this season
and reportedly almost joined QPR in the summer. In an interesting twist,
however, Diarra has been training with West Ham United's head of medicine
Stijn Vandenbroucke, whom he previously worked with at Anzhi Makhachkala. It
may simply be something perfectly innocent in the fact that the 29-year-old
is working with the West Ham man to up his fitness, although the Mail claim
that, 'if anything, Diarra would prefer to move to Upton Park.' It appears
for now, though, that Diarra won't be joining QPR, West Ham or Celtic. The
Frenchman is clearly a midfielder of value - and had plenty of ability in
his prime. But the fact that he came close to joining the R's, as well as
SPL champions Celtic, does not seem to count for anything with regards to
his future. All we can concretely say at the moment is that Diarra is
working with a member of West Ham's staff - but only for training purposes.

Irons ready to let unhappy star go out on loan

Claret & Hugh
West Ham are ready to let Matt Jarvis go out on loan next month if they
receive the right terms from any one of a number of foreign clubs who are
keen. ClaretandHugh has been told the player is deeply unhappy at his
severely limited first team chances and is desperate to get first team
football elsewhere. Sam Allardyce is not apposed to that and the club is
aware of several interested clubs in Italy and Spain who are keen on the £9
million signing. Jarvis has made just three fleeting appearances against
Queens Park Rangers, Everton and Newcastle this term but has become the
major victim of a revolution that has swept through the club this season.
West Brom offered a loan deal for the player in the summer but the Hammers
were unhappy with the terms but are ready to listen to offers from abroad. A
well placed source told ClaretandHugh: "There is an awful lot of interest in
Italy and Spain and one Mexican club is enthusiastic.
"He's very unhappy and we may well let him go out if the deal is right."
