Our daily look at West Ham United in the written and digital media
10.09.2014

The Daily Mirror's Darren Lewis claims that striker Andy Carroll could yet
return earlier from injury than originally anticipated. He reports that the
England striker has started running for the first time since July surgery on
torn ankle ligaments and could now be back ahead of a supposed November
target.

Following his now famous goal against an Ipswich Town XI last week, Diafra
Sakho is back in the headlines this morning. The Daily Mirror, London 24 and
TalkSport each carries his quotes from an interview with whufc.com, in which
he spoke of his goalscoring ambitions for the campaign and how well he is
settling in at the Club.

The Sun is this morning claiming that Neil McDonald is set to remain at West
Ham United, amid speculation that he is among the frontrunners for the
Carlisle United manager's job.

West Ham's Diafra Sakho targeting a goal a game

Diafra Sakho is determined to achieve a lot at West Ham United and has set a
target of scoring at least one goal in every home game. Senegal
international Sakho joined the Hammers on a four-year deal from Metz last
month and is already feeling settled at the club. He is now looking to push
on and make a big impact, starting with Monday night's trip to the KC
Stadium to face Hull City. "It's only been a couple of weeks but I feel
right at home already, even if I'm struggling a bit with the lingo," the
24-year-old told the club's official website. "It's a real family club and
that's what's really touched me. When you're away from home, family is so
important and that's precisely what I've found here at West Ham. "I want to
achieve things with West Ham and lots of them. I am super motivated and I'm
going to give all that I possibly can to help the team. "I feel good at the
minute with everyone around me doing their utmost to see that I'm in the
best shape possible."

Having made his debut as a substitute away to Crystal Palace, Sakho then
scored on his first appearance at Upton Park as West Ham lost out on
penalties to Sheffield United following a 1-1 draw in the Capital One Cup. A
minor back problem meant that he was an unused substitute against
Southampton, but he is now fully recovered and eager to show the fans what
he can do. Whenever I turn out at the Boleyn Ground, the minimum I'm aiming
for is to score once."
Diafra Sakho I was thrilled to be in the squad against Crystal Palace and
excited to play for the very first time in the Premier League," he recalled.
"The manager called on me for the final 20 minutes and it did me the world
of good. I tried to take the pressure off the boys, though it was a bit
tough having not played for a little while. "Against Sheffield United, the
manager asked me to do a job on the right-hand side and, while it was a new
experience for me, I really enjoyed it. It's great to have scored on my home
debut and hopefully you'll see plenty more of that. "Whenever I turn out at
the Boleyn Ground, the minimum I'm aiming for is to score once."

MIGHT WEST HAM HAVE TO SHARE THE OS WITH SPURS?!

West Ham Till I Die

Guest Post by Safe Hands

I heard on TalkSport earlier the news that Tottenham's new stadium has had a
set back as there's to be an appeal in the High Court against the compulsory
purchase order made by the Secretary of State. This means the construction
will be delayed and their move to their new stadium will be pushed back by a
year. As much as I was initially thinking 'ha, what goes around comes
around', the knock on effect means they won't be able to play their home
games at their own stadium and will have to look elsewhere for one season.
The options The Star have listed are MK Dons, Wembley or, yes you've guessed
it, the OS.

Personally, I don't want them at the OS – once a season is more than enough
thanks. But let's get this straight – we don't own the OS, so can our
landlords rent it out on alternate Saturdays to Tottenham and recoup some of
the money they've spent making it fit for purpose?

Sir Trevor bows out as FA Skills programme hits 6 million
Sir Trevor Brooking
By FA Staff

Sir Trevor Brooking has marked his retirement from football by celebrating
the six millionth child taking part on The FA Skills Programme. The outgoing
FA Director of Football Development was at Parliament today alongside the
Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, The Right Honourable Sajid
Javid MP and FA General Secretary Alex Horne to toast the continuing success
of the programme. Speaking at the event, Horne paid tribute to Brooking's
11-year stint at The FA. He said: "What more fitting way to honour the
dedication and commitment of such a great servant to the English game than
by recognising the tremendous work he has done. "I'm hugely proud that we
have been able to offer six million places so far" "Sir Trevor was
instrumental in laying the foundations of the FA Skills Programme which now
boasts nearly 160 dedicated expert coaches across the length and breadth of
the country. He leaves a lasting legacy for the future of football in this
country."

Jointly funded by the governing body of English football and the Government
through Sport England, FA Skills is an accredited football-based physical
education programme on offer to children aged 5-11 both in and out of
school. Sir Trevor was instrumental in introducing the programme seven years
ago - identifying the improvement of coaching standards for children as key
to developing the next generation of creative players and nourishing
sustained enthusiasm and participation within the game across all levels.
Wednesday's Parliamentary event brings the curtain down on the former West
Ham United and England striker's 47-year association with the beautiful game
– having joined the Hammers in 1967. Having been treated to an FA Skills
session in New Palace Yard against the historic backdrop of the Houses of
Parliament along with other attendees, Javid added: "FA Skills has taken
football to vast numbers of children right across the country who have
benefited from sessions with dedicated coaches. "FA Skills has taken
football to vast numbers of children"

"Playing sport can have a huge impact on young people from improving
health, boosting confidence and encouraging team work. Much credit goes to
Sir Trevor Brooking for the vision he had setting up FA Skills and I thank
him for all he has done at the governing body." As he bid farewell to his
role, Brooking spoke of his pride at seeing the initiative go from
strength-to-strength. He said: "The FA Skills programme has gone from
strength to strength and I'm hugely proud that we have been able to offer
six million places so far. "The programme is not only a great way to
introduce football to children of all abilities, but it also helps increase
teachers' confidence with transferable tips, advice and support - ensuring
that football and physical education is rewarding, fun and
confidence-building to all those that participate."

Carroll return date "mysteriously" disappears!
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on September 10, 2014 in Whispers
Claret & Hugh

Andy Carroll's projected October 25 return to action has been one of Upton
Park's most closely guarded secrets for very obvious reasons. After the
official and unofficial bulletins on Carroll's foot injury and the many let
downs last season, the club is into a playing down major expectations.
However, it seems this morning that www.physioroom.com, where the news was
given of Carroll's October 25 until return last night, has been mysteriously
removed and replaced with the words "no return date." It's interesting that
the site should do so so soon after the news of an earlier than expected
return was given. We believe that the site gathers information from insiders
at various clubs, just like the rest of us, but may now have decided to err
on the side of caution as a result of publicity! Maybe it was a case of
"Whoops – too much information!" Our own information is that the player is
widely expected to return on the date given on the site until last evening
(Tues) – October 25. And national newspaper reports are saying the player is
running again and remains "quietly confident" of playing ahead of his
originally predicted end November. We will all see just how accurate
www.physioroom.com can be over the next days and weeks with Joey O'Brien,
Carl Jenkinson, James Collins and Matt Jarvis all predicted to be available
for next Monday and Kevin Nolan for October 18.

Irons/Spurs ground-share looks non starter
Posted by Sean Whetstone on September 10, 2014 in Whispers
Claret & Hugh

Tottenham Hotspurs hopes of ground-sharing the Olympic Stadium with the
Irons are thin – at best! Fresh fears that the north Londoners could look to
get involved in such a plan emerged today when it became clear they were
going to have to leave white Hart Lane for a season whilst their new ground
was built.
Stories that Spurs might ground share with West Ham in the Olympic Stadium
for one season seem wide of the mark. The same argument that existed for
Leyton Orient and Barry Hearn applies to Spurs and Levy. However, when West
Ham Vice Chairman Karren Brady was asked about ground sharing before the
House of Lords select committee last year she appeared to rule it out. She
said: "There is no precedent for ground-sharing. There is an understanding
that every football club has to have supremacy of fixtures to be able to
fulfill its obligation to its league. Having two football clubs that have
that priority would be difficult."

While West Ham signed up to a teaming agreement as part of its bid the fact
remains it has anchor concessionaire winter rights and priority at the OS.
UK Athletics enjoy the summer anchor tenant rights and priority. When the
stadium operator is announced that anyone including Spurs could in theory
book the Stadium in the same way you book a village hall, it's another level
again to guarantee full Premier League fixture list for a second Premier
League club. Much more likely is for Spurs to ground share with the England
football team at Wembley in North London although Levy might not be keen on
paying the FA's high rent. One option put forward online was for Spurs to
rotate between multiple stadiums with Wembley, the Olympic Stadium and
Stadium MK within the mix among others. This would leave Spurs as nomads
with no permanent home stadium for one season. I am told this s would be
difficult as Premier League rules say changes of stadium during a season
must be agreed in writing.

Tevez wages revealed
Posted by Sean Whetstone on September 10, 2014 in Whispers
Claret & Hugh

Former Hammers legend Carlos Tevez had his wages officially published along
side the whole of Serie A league players in Italy on Monday. The striker who
was once claimed to earn £150,000 per week is earning £70,000 per week at
Juventus after joining them on a 3 year contract for £10m in 2013. Other
surprises show former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole linked with a Hammers
move over the summer has dropped down to £35,000 per week with Roma from the
eye watering £200,000 per week it is claimed he enjoyed at Chelsea in his
last season. Former Hammers loan striker Marco Borriello earns £54,000 per
week with Roma with his fellow Hammers loanee Antonio Nocerino earning
£23,000 per week at Milan. AC Milan's M'Baye Niang who had talks to join
West Ham over the summer before being rejected earns £12,500 per week
Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon who once said he would of
loved to play for the Hammer earns £61,000-per-week at Roma. The published
wage bill shows the massive gulf between the Italian league and the Premier
League where £40,000 per week is now considered the average wage.
