AsiaAir tycoon Tony Fernandes claims he is closing in on a deal which will
see him take control at West Ham. The multi-millionaire, who is also the
principle of LotusF1, is a big Hammers fan and is desperate to push through
a takeover at Upton Park. The club's current owners, Icelandic consortium
Straumar, have been struggling financially for some time and can no longer
provide the funding required to sustain a Premier League side. Various
reports have suggested they have been close to agreeing a sale on a number
of occasions, with a host of potential buyers said to be in the pipeline.
Former Birmingham City co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold remain among
the favourites to strike an agreement, with the duo having already taken a
look at West Ham's books ahead of a proposed £50million offer for a 50 per
cent share. However, Fernandes is hoping that he can pip the former Blues
pair to the post, with the Malaysia-born magnate reported to be the fans'
choice to take charge in the East End. "Soon West Ham fans will have an
owner who can make a difference and cares," he said in The Sun.
