West Ham United will kick off their Barclays Premier Reserve League South
season with a trip to champions Aston Villa on Tuesday evening. Manager Alex
Dyer will hope to build on an encouraging first season in charge at Villa
Park, having guided the Hammers to fifth place in 2008/09. Dyer will have a
host of promising youngsters at his disposal this term, with the likes of
captain Bondz N'Gala and first-year professionals Matt Fry, Tony Brookes,
Olly Lee, Danny Kearns and Anthony Edgar all hoping to force their way into
Gianfranco Zola's squad. Hungary Under-21 goalkeeper Peter Kurucz, who has
been on the bench for the club's opening three Barclays Premier League
fixtures, could start between the sticks at Villa. Experienced Scotland
midfielder Nigel Quashie and Iceland U21 defender Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson may
also feature but the match is too soon for the fit-again Terry Dixon after
his long-term knee injury. Villa will present stern opposition for Dyer's
side, having romped to the league title last time around, beaten North
champions Sunderland 3-1 in the inter-divisional play-off, and opened the
2009/10 campaign with a thumping 4-0 win at Chelsea on 25 August. England
U19 defender Ciaran Clark scored twice, while lively winger Marc Albrighton
and Austrian midfielder Andreas Weimann were also on target for Kevin
MacDonald's side. Last year's meetings between the two clubs were also
shaded by Villa, who won 2-0 at Bishop's Stortford and enjoyed the better of
a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at Hinckley United FC.
Tuesday's match will kick-off at 7pm at Villa Park, with tickets being
available on the night.
