Northern Ireland defender George McCartney is on the verge of leaving West
Ham and returning to his previous club Sunderland, BBC Sport understands.
McCartney was linked with a return to the Black Cats in July before signing
a new five-year deal with the Hammers. West Ham turned down a £4.5m offer in
early July but Sunderland have made a renewed bid of around £6m for the
Northern Ireland player. McCartney is having a medical at Sunderland on
Monday. The defender joined West Ham from Sunderland in a £1m deal in August
2006.

Appiah Hammer? - KUMB
Filed: Monday, 1st September 2008
By: Staff Writer
The move to bring Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah to West Ham is back on,
according to latest reports. Latest speculation suggests that Appiah has
rejected a move to Juventus in favour of moving to London and will sign a
permanent deal with the Hammers sometime today. Rumours linking the
28-year-old former Fenerbache star with the Hammers appeared to cool over
the weekend, however it is believed that a party from West Ham flew to Italy
to meet the international captain where a deal was hammered out. We'll have
more for you on this as it happens.

Ferreira on his way? - KUMB
Filed: Monday, 1st September 2008

West Ham are being linked with a deadline day move for Chelsea right-back
Paulo Ferreira. The 29-year-old full-back - who can also play at centre-half
and left-back - joined Chelsea in a £13.2million deal four years ago. He
played 29 games for the Blues in his first season which was curtailed by
injury.
However he has increasingly found himself on the sidelines at Stamford
Bridge since the summer arrival of Jose Bosingwa, despite having signed a
new five-year deal earlier this year. The Hammers are thought to be
interested in taking the Portuguese international - who played all four game
for his country (at left back) during Euro 2008 - on loan for the remainder
of the season. We'll have more for you on this as it happens.

Appiah in no hurry - SSN
Ghana captain can wait until after deadline
Last updated: 1st September 2008
Skysports.com understands that Ghana captain Stephen Appiah is in no hurry
to commit his future to West Ham. The Hammers have been strongly linked with
the powerful midfielder and were reported to be ready to push through a deal
before the deadline at midnight. But Appiah, who is a free agent having
parted company with Fenerbahce, is considering his options with a number of
Europe's leading clubs believed to be interested. Sources close to the
player have told skysports.com that Appiah will not rush into putting pen to
paper with any club due to his status as a free agent. As he is no longer
under contract with the Turkish giants, the former Juventus player will be
able to sign for a new club after the closure of the transfer window. The
highly-rated Appiah is bound to attract interest in the Premier League,
Spain, Italy and Germany with his combative talents much in demand.

Black Cats move for McCartney - SSN
Defender in line for shock Sunderland return
Last updated: 1st September 2008
Sunderland have made a beat-the-deadline move to sign West Ham defender
George McCartney, skysports.com understands. McCartney has been chased by
the Black Cats all summer, but the Northern Ireland rejected their overtures
to pledge his future to Upton Park. Sunderland boss Roy Keane is keen to
bring in one more new signing before the closure of the transfer window as
he looks to solve his problematic left-back quandary. The 27-year-old
arrived at Upton Park from the North East club in 2006 in a swap deal with
Clive Clarke and he quickly established himself in East London. McCartney
recently signed a new deal at Upton Park, but Sunderland are hoping to
persuade West Ham to do business with a big-money offer. It is believed
McCartney is currently on Wearside undergoing a medical as Sunderland look
to tie up a deal before midnight.

McCartney returns to Sunderland from West Ham on a £4.5m four-year deal -
Daily Mail
By Martin Hardy
Last updated at 4:43 PM on 01st September 2008
George McCartney has returned to Sunderland in a £4.5 million deal from West
Ham. The Northern Ireland defender moved to Upton Park two years ago when
Niall Quinn was manager. However, Roy Keane has chased the 27-year-old all
summer and West Ham finally agreed to the sale. McCartney underwent a
medical at the Stadium of Light and will sign a four-year deal. To help fund
the move, Danny Higginbotham is expected to return to his former club Stoke
for £2.5 million. Higginbotham moved to the Stadium of Light last summer
but the arrival of Anton Ferdinand has meant Keane was prepared to let him
go.

FULL TIME: Green penalty save inspires Irons to emphatic win - Guardian
Series
5:02pm Saturday 30th August 2008
West Ham 4 Blackburn 1
(Premier League)
A LATE goal double ensured West Ham made it an unhappy return to Upton Park
for Blackburn boss Paul Ince. The Hammers were holding on to a 2-1 lead
deep into stoppage time when goals from Craig Bellamy and Carlton Cole
sealed an empahtic scoreline for the hosts. Ince, given a tough time by the
home crowd for posing in a Manchester United shirt prior to his move from
Upton Park to Old Trafford almost 20 years ago, will no doubt lay into his
troops for falling apart in the closing stages of a niggling game. The
Hammers started brightly and went ahead on 12 minutes when Calum Davenport
headed in Julien Faubert's corner. Dean Ashton doubled the advantage eight
minutes later, turning in Mark Noble's cross-shot from close range. But the
Hammers went to sleep less than a minute later. Davenport allowed Roberts to
turn in the box and the forward prodded low into the corner. Matt Derbyshire
had the ball in the net moments after coming on as a substitute, only for it
to be contorverisally ruled out for offside. The match stepped up a gear
soon into the second half when Cole handled Steven Reid's free kick in the
box.
Roberts stepped up only to see Robert Green dive low to his left to keep the
spot kick out. For the most part from then on, West Ham looked comfortable
sitting off and conceding possession. And it paid dividends as Rovers
struggled to break the hosts' solid back line. Brett Emerton came closest to
forging an equaliser for the visitors, diving in at the far post but seeing
his header well saved by Green. At the other end, Davenport controlled Matty
Upson's lofted pass and rifled an effort just past the far post. Cole then
forced Paul Robinson into a fine save with a curling effort from the edge of
the box. It took a touch of class from Wales forward Craig Bellamy - out for
three weeks with a hamstring injury - that eventually sealed the win. He
raced onto Lucas Neill's long pass before smashing home past Robinson on the
half volley. And Cole made it four moments later, turning in Scott Parker's
pass from close range following good work from Valon Behrami.
West Ham: Green, Behrami, Neill, Upson, Davenport, Faubert (McCartney 60),
Parker, Noble (Mullins 81), Etherington, Ashton (Bellamy 68), Cole. Subs not
used: Lastuvka, Boa Morte, Reid, Sears.

HAMMERS TALK: McCartney undergoing medical at Sunderland? - Guardian Series
3:33pm Monday 1st September 2008
DEADLINE-DAY transfer rumours are rife that George McCartney is on the verge
of a shock move back to Sunderland. The Wearsiders had a £4.5million bid for
the West Ham defender rejected by the east Londoners and the player earlier
in the summer. But Black Cats boss Roy Keane is desperate to sign a
left-sided full-back and is thought to have tabled a renewed offer of
£6million for the 27-year-old. And it seems to have paid off, with media
reports suggesting the Northern Ireland international is at the north-east
club undergoing a medical, despite only recently penning a new long-term
contract with the Hammers. McCartney spent nine years at Sunderland prior to
a £600,000 move to West Ham in 2006 which saw Clive Clarke move in the
opposite direction. He has established himself as a first-team regular at
Upton Park and a crowd favourite during his two years with the club. That
saw him voted as runner-up in the Hammer of the Year award last season after
featuring in every single league and cup game. Should he join the Stadium of
Light outfit, McCartney would link up with former team mate Anton Ferdiand,
who signed from West Ham for £8million last week.

HAMMERS TALK: Irons reject a £5m Black Cats bid for forward - Guardian
Series
11:08am Monday 1st September 2008
WEST HAM have reportedly turned down a renewed £5million offer from
Sunderland for Carlton Cole. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to
the Stadium of Light already this summer, while Premier League newboys Stoke
were believed to have tabled a bid for the striker last week. Cole - who
scored his second goal of the season in Saturday's 4-1 win over Blackburn -
has established himself as a key component of Alan Curbishley's squad and
last week pledged himself to the club. Despite reports he is at loggerheads
with the club over a new contract, the player himself also revealed that
discussions over a new deal are going well. However, Roy Keane wants the
former Chelsea hitman to complete his summer spending spree. The Black Cats
boss has made eight major signings already, including Anton Ferdinand in an
£8million deal from West Ham last week.

'You're just a fat Eddie Murphy' West Ham fans taunt Ince - The Mirror
By Neil McLeman 1/09/2008
He was branded "just a fat Eddie Murphy" by the West Ham fans. And the
Blackburn boss certainly left Upton Park feeling raw - and wishing he could
have traded places with his opposite number Alan Curbishley for his unlucky
90 minutes. Just after losing star striker Roque Santa Cruz in the first
half, Ince saw sub Matt Derbyshire's headed equaliser wrongly ruled offside.
Jason Roberts then missed a penalty after the break but Rovers were still
very much in the game until West Ham's two stoppage-time goals saw an
outrageously unfair 4-1 scoreline. It was a Saturday Night Live that Ince
will not want to see repeated. "We were hard done by," said the former
England midfielder, who had to wait 36 seconds into the game before the
first seat-clearing chant of 'Stand Up If You Hate Paul Ince'. "Curbs is
obviously a lucky manager but I know he's also a top manager and I'm pleased
for him." Roberts admitted his 47th-minute penalty miss, after Carlton Cole
had handled a Stephen Reid free-kick, had been the decisive moment in the
game. "All the momentum was going our way and if I'd stuck that away maybe
things would have been totally different, but you miss some and you score
some and, unfortunately I missed," said the £3million forward.
"People will look at the result but I don't think it really reflects the
performance. "We tried to push on towards the last 10 or 15 minutes of the
game and that's where we really got caught out. We played well yet it looks
like a convincing defeat."

Hammers triumph as Bellamy withdraws from Wales squad - Daily Mail
By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 3:03 PM on 01st September 2008
West Ham striker Craig Bellamy has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for
the World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Russia. The 29-year-old
managed only a handful of appearances last season because of injury and
missed the start of the current campaign with a hamstring problem. Bellamy
returned to action for the Hammers when he came off the bench to score
during the 4-1 win over Blackburn at Upton Park on Saturday. However, it
has now been decided the striker will remain in London during the
international break. A statement from the Football Association of Wales
read: 'After discussions between the managers, John Toshack and Alan
Curbishley, of West Ham, and the player Craig Bellamy, it has been mutually
agreed that in the interests of all parties, the player will continue his
rehabilitation plan at his club.'
The news will come as welcome relief to West Ham boss Curbishley, who was
unhappy at the £7million former Liverpool striker risking another setback.
Speaking at the weekend, Curbishley said: 'No way is Craig fit for
international football. I have told him and John Toshack exactly that, even
though he has called Craig up. 'Craig has just come back and 20 minutes was
all he could do. Even then he kept asking me to wait and wait.'

Keane swoops for West Ham star - Sunderland Echo
Sunderland have moved for former defender George McCartney. Now playing for
West Ham, McCartney has been chased by the Black Cats all summer, but the
Northern Ireland rejected a return to the Stadium of Light. However, it is
understood that he is on Wearside for a medical today. Sunderland boss Roy
Keane has been trying to bring in a proven left-back all summer and now
looks to have got his man. The 27-year-old left Sunderland for West Ham in
2006 as part of a swap deal with Clive Clarke and he quickly established
himself in East London. McCartney recently signed a new deal at Upton Park.
