English clubs bidding for France international
Last updated: 21st August 2008
Marseille have confirmed defender Gael Givet is free to leave the Ligue 1 club. West Ham have been linked with a move for the France international, however, Greek outfit Panathinaikos currently lead the chase for his signature. L'OM have allowed Givet to move on in search of first-team football following the summer signing of Lens' Vitorino Hilton. Marseille president Pape Diouf has confirmed Givet can leave the Stade Velodrome and that clubs in England have tabled bids for the 26-year-stopper. "Gael has been given the green light to leave," he told Marseille's official website. "(Coach) Erik (Gerets) has been very clear with him and has told him that players will continue to be recruited and that the majority may be ahead of him. "He has had offers, most notably from Panathinaikos and more recently from some English clubs. "I really hope his situation will be sorted between now and the end of the week or the beginning of the next."

Hammers have not axed popular PA man Nicholas - Guardian Series
8:14am Friday 22nd August 2008
WEST Ham United's matchday announcer Jeremy Nicholas has quashed rumours that he had been sacked by the club. Speculation surrounding his future surfaced after the award-winning TV and radio broadcaster was absent from the Hammers' Premier League opener against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
One group of supporters even set up a petition to reinstate the popular Nicholas – but fears of his demise had been greatly, in fact erroneously, exaggerated. In fact, the former BBC presenter had stood aside while the Irons tried out a new audio-visual presentation before and during the hosts' 2-1 win. In an open letter published on the fans' website West Ham Til I Die, Nicholas explained the situation. "The club have been working hard to improve the whole match day experience, with more use being made of visual images," he explained. "One innovation this season is the reading of the team sheets using players images on the big screens. "You may have seen the sticker book format of West Ham players, with the screen zooming in and out on the players as their names were read out. "I thought it looked great on Saturday. "To ensure this worked smoothly, ADI, the firm who run the screens asked to bring in their own announcer and sound engineer and have them sit in the box with them."
While engineers from broadcast specialists The ADI Group – who also provide the matchday entertainment at Aston Villa – worked to perfect the experience at Upton Park, Nicholas himself relaxed in the stands. "I was happy to give way and the club gave me great seats in the stand," he added.
The club's new matchday entertainment programme will mean fans will hear less of Nicholas, he explained, with more focus on the big screens and televisions dotted around the Boleyn Ground. But despite seeing his workload lightened, Nicholas admitted less may be more for some members of the Irons faithful. "The matchday format is moving towards more screen information and less from the announcer. "I'm sure this is a good thing as the last thing most fans want is to be bellowed at," he joked. Any supporters with suggestions as to how the club could improve the matchday entertainment experience should email their ideas to matchday@westhamunited.co.uk

Palermo confirm Bresciano interest from Rangers and West Ham - footylatest.com
Friday 22 August 2008 - 07:22:50
The Australian international Mark Bresciano has been linked with Rangers for the last week, and last night his club, Palermo, confirmed that they are engaged in talks with both Rangers and West Ham for the Aussie midfielder. There have also been rumours that Italian giants Roma were also interested in him, but Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini denies that he has received any enquiries from them. "Roma have never asked for Bresciano," Zamparini told Italian reporters. "The Giallorossi directors have never called me about him and, to be honest, I don't think they will. "There are currently negotiations with West Ham and Glasgow Rangers, but I am hoping he stays. He is a player who makes a difference. "We value the player at around €7m and last year I rejected an €8m bid for him." Zamparini also added that he would not consider any loan deal for Bresciano.

Collins insists his future at West Ham
tribalfooball.com - August 21, 2008
Fit-again defender James Collins insists his future is at West Ham United. Collins told whufc.com: "I know there has been a bit of speculation about my future but I am more than happy here, the treatment I have had with my injury and the way the lads have been reinforces my desire to remain here.
"I feel like I still have a big part to play in West Ham's future so I am just looking to get my head down and concentrate on getting back as soon as possible. I think it will still be a couple of months before I am fully fit but with other centre-backs having injuries as well my aim is to get back and straight into the team."
