Cristian coming through
WHUFC.com
Cristian Montano is in form and hoping to get a further chance to stake his
claim against FC Copenhagen
17.07.2011

Cristian Montano has been given an opportunity to shine in pre-season and,
so far, he has taken it with both feet. The talented Colombia-born winger
has featured in all three of the club's matches so far this summer,
climaxing in an eye-catching display in Saturday's 3-0 victory at Bishop's
Stortford. Montano, who was introduced as an early substitute for fellow
Academy graduate Junior Stanislas at Woodside Park, will have no doubt
impressed watching manager Sam Allardyce with his elusive running and
intricate dribbling skills, as well as his late slide-rule pass from which
Jack Collison completed the scoring. "It was very good for me to perform in
front of the first-team manager and it was also good for me to keep my
performances going," he told whufc.com "Obviously it's helping me a lot to
be playing week-in, week-out and I've played in every game in pre-season.
That has helped me a lot. "I've got my fitness, which is obviously a very
important thing for me to have this year. Hopefully I can kick-on from this
and keep showing what I can do and keep improving game by game."

While he has a number of strengths to his game, notably his tenacity,
heading ability and keen eye for goal, the 2009/10 Doris Bell Award winner
knows his running with the ball is what gets supporters excited. "That's my
attribute really. I like taking players on and causing trouble and help the
team out in that way. I want to keep putting balls into the box and getting
my shots in whenever I can, really. "Like I said, I just want to keep
building on my performances game by game and keep improving."

Montano was one of a number of young players to have joined the first-team
squad on their pre-season visit to Switzerland. There, the 19-year-old
worked hard on his fitness and showed glimpses of his undoubted potential in
the pre-season meetings with Swiss Super League sides BSC Young Boys and FC
Basel. Having tasted plenty of action on the club's first foray onto the
continent, Montano is eyeing another chance to showcase his talents in
Wednesday's fixture against FC Copenhagen in Denmark. "It would be a good
thing to go away with them again because it would be another good
experience. "Playing against Copenhagen would be great because they are
another big club. It would help me to learn a bit more, so I'm going to keep
training hard and hopefully I can make the squad."

Hendon is a Hammer
WHUFC.com
New Development Coach Ian Hendon helped the Hammers to score a pre-season
victory
18.07.2011

West Ham United can confirm that Ian Hendon has been appointed as the club's
new Development Coach. The 39-year-old has arrived at the Boleyn Ground from
League Two side Gillingham, where he held the role of assistant manager.
Hendon, who played professionally for a host of clubs including Tottenham
Hotspur, Leyton Orient, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnet during a 20-year
career, was capped seven times by England at Under-21 level. Following his
retirement, the Ilford-born defender spent 18 months as manager of Barnet
before filling the same role at Dover Athletic. He had joined Gillingham in
June 2010. Hendon told West Ham TV that his time spent as a player under
manager Sam Allardyce at Notts County had played a big role in his own
coaching philosophies. "Since I finished playing about four or five years
ago, I've been a coach, an assistant manager and a manager and then, last
year, I went down to Gillingham with Andy Hessenthaler as his assistant. I
got the shout to come and see the gaffer, had an interview with him and
luckily for me he thought I could bring good things to the club and I got
offered the job. "It's all happened very quickly in the last ten days to two
weeks. "I definitely get the feeling that there is an optimistic atmosphere
around the club. I worked with the manager a long time ago when I was a
player under him at Notts County and I've been in touch with him over the
years. "He knows exactly how he wants his players to play and what he wants
from them. If I can instil that in the younger players it bodes well for the
future."

West Ham's relegation to the npower Championship means the club will no
longer field a reserve team in a league structure. Instead, the club's young
professionals will play friendly matches as part of a newly-formed
Development Squad, with Hendon calling the shots. "My role is literally what
it says on the tin, if you like - to develop the young players, to work with
them and to try and push them through that transition from the Academy to
the first team. "It's very similar to a reserve-team role, but there's no
reserve league this year. There will be games, and it will be my role to
arrange fixtures and to get the lads playing in games. "There will also be a
possibility along the way of some of the lads going out on loan to aid their
development and to help them, when they come back, to be more ready for the
first team."
Hendon's first work assignment saw him assist first-team coach Wally Downes
at the 3-0 pre-season victory at Bishop's Stortford on Saturday. While the
appearances of Scott Parker, Mark Noble and Jack Collison stole the
headlines, the new Development Coach was keeping a closer eye on the
performances of the players he will work with day-in, day-out - most notably
United States Under-20 playmaker Sebastian Lletget. "The young players
really rose to the occasion, especially Sebby. I thought he did really well
in the hole in what was his first hour of football this pre-season. "I have
got my eye on them and how they fit in with the older players. In the second
half, we had a few big-hitters who came on and I was looking at how the
young lads fared with the bigger boys. I was very pleased."

Youngsters head for Estonia
WHUFC.com
The Under-18s will take part in a four-team tournament in Estonia as part of
their pre-season schedule
18.07.2011

West Ham United's Under-18 squad will step up their pre-season with a trip
to Estonia this week. The Hammers youth-team squad have been working hard at
Little Heath in preparation for the international tournament in Tallinn,
which will see them take on the Estonia Under-19 national team, Dutch giants
PSV Eindhoven and Russian side Dinamo Moscow. Before they fly out on
Thursday 22 July, however, the youngsters will return to match action by
taking on Dagenham & Redbridge and Notts County in two 60-minute warm-up
matches. Academy coach Nick Haycock said he and his staff were looking for
the players to take a positive approach to their intense pre-season training
schedule. "Training has gone well," said Haycock. "We've put in a hard ten
days of double sessions and obviously we tapered it off towards the end of
the week because we have games on Monday and Tuesday against Dagenham &
Redbridge and Notts County when we're going to play 60 minutes. "The boys
will play 45 minutes in one game and 15 in the other and then we travel to
Estonia next Thursday. "We play PSV Eindhoven on the Friday and then the
Estonia Under-19 side, which should be interesting, and then DInamo Moscow.
"PSV will play in the Dutch style and I expect we'll play similar to them in
terms of shape, style and system. We expect Estonia to be big, fit and
strong but also technically-gifted, and Dinamo Moscow always present a test.
"Hopefully the lads can look after themselves and behave - how they conduct
themselves while we're away is also important and we'll be looking at that -
and we'll also organise a team-bonding activity so we can gel the lads into
more of a team. "It will be a great test for the boys. We'll obviously have
to limit their game-time out there because three games in five days isn't
ideal at this stage of pre-season, so everything we do will be looking
towards our first game of the season against Sheffield United. "We'll move
onwards and upwards and it's all-systems go for the tournament. Then, when
we get back we'll hit the ground running and take it into the start of the
season."

The new FA Premier Academy League season will kick-off "The games on Monday
and Tuesday will be about getting the cobwebs out of their systems and
getting them back into game-play situations. "They've done a lot of hard
running this week and have been out into the forest, which replicated the
first team and everyone had a good time. "We've got a good set of lads and
we're looking forward to hopefully having a successful season."

West Ham end interest in striker Eider Gudjohnsen
Page last updated at 14:07 GMT, Sunday, 17 July 2011 15:07 UK
BBC.co.uk

West Ham have pulled out of a deal to sign former Stoke striker Eidur
Gudjohnsen, who was a free agent after leaving the Potters. The 32-year-old
Icelandic international was poised to join the Hammers on a one-year deal
after passing a medical at Upton Park. But manager Sam Allardyce decided to
withdraw the offer after Gudjohnsen hesitated over signing it. Reports
suggest he could instead be going to AEK Athens on a two-year deal.
Gudjohnsen had previously worked with Allardyce at Bolton, the club he
joined from KR Reykjavik in 1998. He went on to enjoy highly successful
spells at Chelsea and then Barcelona before returning to England, first on
loan at Spurs and then at Stoke. The frontman, who has 66 caps for Iceland,
spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham and had been linked
with a move to Premier League newcomers Swansea City.

Hendon arrival confirmed

West Ham United have confirmed the arrival of Ian Hendon as the club's new
Development Coach. The 39-year-old was formerly assistant manager of
Gilligham before being lured to the Boleyn Ground by new boss Sam Allardyce,
whose backroom team is now beginning to take shape nicely. Speaking about
his new role, Hendon said: "I got the shout to come and see the gaffer, went
and had an interview with him and luckily for me he thought what I could
bring to it was good I got offered the job. "That all happened very quickly,
in the last seven days to two weeks."

Hendon's playing career, which began at Tottenham in 1989 and ended at
Barnet 20 years later saw him appear for ten clubs, mostly in the lower
leagues - although he also made seven appearances for England under 21's
between 1992 and 1993. A right back by trade, Hendon also played in central
defence and midfield. His first foray into coaching came shortly after his
retirement when he joined Paul Fairclough's coaching staff at Barnett, the
club for whom he had been playing at the end of his career.

In April 2009 he took his first management role, also at Barnet. However
that was to end in disaster when Hendon was fired a year later with the Bees
facing relegation. Undeterred by that experience he was named manager of
Dover Athletic the following month, but after just 18 days in charge at the
Crabble Athletic Ground left to become assistant to Andy Henssethaler at
Gillingham - where he remained until being offered his current post.

Boa closes in on Hammer Parker
By CHARLIE WYETT

The Sun

SCOTT PARKER is hoping to seal a move to Chelsea - but not on loan. New
Stamford Bridge boss Andre Villas-Boas is weighing up a £7.5million bid for
the England and West Ham midfielder. Aston Villa have already failed with a
£7m attempt for Parker, 30. Tottenham have ruled themselves out of the
running, insisting the overall package would be too expensive. SunSport
revealed last week that Parker, who signed for Chelsea from Charlton for
£10m in 2004, was initially a loan target for the Blues. Making it a
temporary switch did interest West Ham but Parker would have found himself
back at Upton Park in a year's time - so is keen for a permanent deal.
Parker, though, has still impressed the Hammers with his attitude and played
45 minutes in a pre-season game at Bishop's Stortford on Saturday. Chelsea
are set to loan new keeper Thibaut Courtois to Atletico Madrid. Villas-Boas
has agreed a £7.8m fee for the Genk keeper, 19, who had a medical yesterday.
But when the deal goes through, the 6ft 5in Belgian international is off to
Spain for a season - where he will replace David de Gea after his exit to
Manchester United. Courtois said: "I could be loaned out for a second or
third season before becoming part of Chelsea's first-team squad."

SAM ALLARDYCE reckons West Ham got relegated because they were not fit
enough. The new Hammers boss took his squad to Switzerland to make sure they
are in peak condition for the new Championship season. Allardyce was armed
with a series of stats on his players' fitness levels from last season using
the ProZone system and he admits he was shocked how poor they were. Big Sam
said: "Fitness has always been a massive part of football but never more so
than now. If you haven't got the capabilities of an athlete, you can't be a
top footballer. "I've looked at their stats and it doesn't reflect well
physically. It wasn't great. "I was shocked considering the size of the
squad and the quality of the players, many of whom were internationals. They
really should have been pulling out much more. "You look at their ability to
perform at a high intensity and their sprint distances which is the level of
speed needed to create the opportunities to win football matches. "Compared
to the levels at Blackburn and Bolton, they weren't good."

Matt Taylor set for Allardyce reunion
Published 23:00 18/07/11 By Alan Nixon - EXCLUSIVE

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is raiding his old club Bolton to sign Matty
Taylor in a £2.2million deal. Allardyce has made an offer for the left-sided
midfielder, who was in and out of Owen Coyle's side last season but is still
a respected Premier League performer. The Hammers have already snapped up
Bolton old boys Kevin Nolan and Abdoulaye Faye since hiring Allardyce, who
also tried for three more of his former players - Eidur Gudjohnsen, Ricardo
Gardner and Jlloyd Samuel.
Taylor will be offered a lucrative deal and is to fly back from Bolton's
club tour of the US to discuss terms and have a medical. Coyle will use the
Taylor money as part of a signing spree, with a £5million fee for
Barcelona's Jeffren Suarez already agreed.

Tony Pulis refuses to risk Stoke City's finances by breaking bank for West
Ham's Carlton Cole
By Ross Jackson
18 Jul 2011 14:11:00
Goal.com

Tony Pulis has revealed he is willing to give up the chase for the signature
of Carlton Cole for the sake of the club's financial security. Stoke
appeared to be hot favourites to sign the 27-year-old England international
after a £6 million fee had been agreed with West Ham, yet talks have since
broke down due to Cole's reported demands of £45,000 a week. Pulis has no
complaints about Stoke's reluctance to accept Cole's demands, and insists he
is not prepared to risk the club's financial health. "We have spoken as a
board and management team, and it is very important we try to keep to a
level," Pulis told The Sentinel. "We have overachieved enormously over four
years and we know that. "What we don't want to do is chase and chase and
then put ourselves in the position where, if it went wrong, the football
club would be in a bad state financially. That will not happen at Stoke
City."

Stoke are preparing themselves for their first involvement in a major
European competition in 37 years, having drawn Hajduk Split in the Europa
League qualifiers following their FA Cup run last season, and Pulis is well
aware of the task ahead for his team if they are to do well in the
competition. He continued: "It is a very difficult competition because to
get through to the final we would have had to play 18 games – nearly half
the amount of our Premier League matches. "To do that you have to have a
very strong squad and quality in depth. Whether we have that at the moment I
am not sure, but I want to win every game."

West Ham striker Carlton Cole has been linked with a move to West Brom. The
27-year-old's move to Stoke City fell through last week after he failed to
agree personal terms. The Baggies are reportedly interested in signing Cole
but could find his wage demands a stumbling block. After the proposed move
collapsed, the Hammers released a statement which said: "West Ham United
would like to clear up media speculation regarding Carlton Cole's offer to
join Stoke City. "Carlton has not asked for a transfer and has remained
committed to the club at all times. In being given permission to talk to
Stoke, the negotiations did not break down as a result of him asking for too
much money. He was discussing wage parity with other key players and was
well within his right to do so."

Allardyce to decide on Barrera's West Ham future
By talkSPORT
Monday, July 18

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce wants to cast his eye over Pablo Barrera when he
returns for pre-season training this week before he makes a decision over
his long-term future. Barrera has been strongly linked with a move away from
Upton Park during the summer with Real Zaragoza, Espanyol and Wigan leading
the chase to sign him. The Mexico international has a major point to prove
after failing to make any impact at Upton Park under former boss Avram Grant
following his £4m move last summer. Barrera was the star performer for his
country at the Gold Cup during the summer and scored two goals in the final
to help Mexico win the tournament.
Allardyce is in the process of re-assembling his squad following their
relegation into the Championship and wants to see if Barrera can play a
major role under him next season. Barrera was allowed extra holiday
following Mexico's success at the Gold Cup but has now joined up with his
West Ham team-mates and will hold talks over his future.

Allardyce targets six new faces for West Ham
By talkSPORT
Monday, July 18

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is planning to sign at least SIX more players to
ensure his side can gain immediate promotion straight back into the Premier
League.
Allardyce has wasted no time stamping his authority at the club and pulled
off one of the biggest transfer coups of the summer when he signed Newcastle
captain Kevin Nolan. Abdoulaye Faye has also been brought in from Stoke and
the club are hopeful of signing Blackpool striker DJ Campbell. But with the
club losing a number of players at the end of the season, including Robbie
Keane, Victor Obinna, Thomas Hitzlsperger and Danny Gabbidon, Allardyce is
well aware that he needs to strengthen his squad before the transfer window
closes at the end of August. Allardyce said: "Thirteen professionals have
already left West Ham to address the situation that we find ourselves in
from a financial point of view. "When you lose more than 50 per cent of your
squad that means you have to boost the squad up in areas where you think it
is most important. "It could be five or six more players [coming in] before
the end of the transfer window."

West Ham are lining up a £1.2million deal for Bolton midfielder Matty
Taylor. Manager Sam Allardyce has moved for the 29-year-old with Leeds
United's Max Gradel angling for a transfer to France with Lille. Taylor, who
has just one year left on contract, has been looking to move back south and
had been attracting interest from Stoke and West Brom. However, Allardyce is
ready to steal a march on his Premier League rivals and offer better wages.
West Brom remain interested in West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green and are
willing to offer £3million but may struggle to match his personal terms.
They also have an interest in Carlton Cole and Reading's Shane Long but the
latter is rated at £8.5m by the Championship club. They will speak to
former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves in Portland tomorrow and
retain an interest in Birmingham's Liam Ridgewell. Hodgson said: 'There are

Noble: 'West Ham need to sign five or six players still'
London24
Dave Evans, West Ham Correspondent
Tuesday, July 19, 2011
7:35 AM

Hammers midfield star Mark Noble is confident about the new season, but
still thinks that they have to seriously add to their squad before the end
of the transfer window. West Ham midfielder Mark Noble believes the club has
to strengthen the squad if they are to achieve their goal of returning to
the Premier League at the first attempt. The 24-year-old made his first
appearance of pre-season in the 3-0 victory at Bishop's Stortford, playing
the entire second half, but he knows that the Hammers have much more
difficult tasks in front of them. "I am confident about the new season, but
obviously we have got to sign a lot more players," said Noble, who is the
club's current longest serving player. "The squad is nowhere near good
enough or big enough at the minute. Whoever comes and whoever goes we've got
to replace them. "We've got to make five or six signings, good quality
signings for this club who are going to help us achieve what we want to
achieve."

Noble's arrival for the second half of Saturday's friendly coincided with
appearances by Jack Collison and footballer of the year Scott Parker, a
formidable midfield, and with Kevin Nolan still to come into it, one that
could put fear into the hearts of many a Championship club. "It would be
lovely to have a midfield like that one," admitted Noble. "But what happens
in the window up until the end of August, who knows? We are cracking away,
we are working hard, but obviously we know it is going to be a massive
season for us."

Noble missed the last four games of last season with injury, left on the
sidelines as West Ham slipped out of the Premier League, but despite that,
and the fact that he is a lifelong Hammers fan, he has already got over the
club's demise. "I'm over it," he insisted. "I can't dwell on it, that's it.
We just need to get on with it and get the club back into the Premier League
as quickly as possible. "It was nice to get a half after going off to
Switzerland and training hard but not getting on the field to play a match,
for different reasons. "We are training hard, we've got a new manager and
new staff, so we have to get used to each other, but we are looking forward
to the season to come."

Many have blamed Avram Grant for last season's humiliating demotion, but how
have the squad taken to the new regime at the club under Sam Allardyce?
Noble thinks that things are going well: "The atmosphere is good and all the
staff have welcomed the new manager," he said. "He is a big character and a
big influence and hopefully it can work out and if we all pull together we
can get the club back where it belongs."

Noble will play an important part in the coming season. He has already
played 171 games in claret and blue and is wise to the fact that despite
their billing as second favourites to Leicester City, it will be no easy job
to get the Hammers back up at the first attempt. "It is going to be a lot
more difficult than that," explained Noble. "We aren't just going to walk
out there and win every week, it doesn't work like that, especially with the
teams we are going to be playing against. "We need to go out there, put 100
per cent in and if we can get some more players who are going to do that,
I'm sure we will have no problems."

Carlton Cole insists he is '100% committed' to West Ham

Carlton Cole insists he remains as committed as ever to West Ham after his
proposed move to Stoke fell through. The Potters had agreed a fee for the
27-year-old - who had not asked for a transfer - but his wages proved a
stumbling block to the move on Friday. "I am as committed to West Ham as
always," he told the club's website. "There has been a lot of things
reported, that it was a done deal I was moving to another club. But that is
not the case and I want our fans to know." He added: "I am a West Ham player
and have no knowledge that is going to be any different. "Unless I am told
something different, I am a West Ham player and will be doing my all for the
team."

A West Ham spokesman told BBC Sport on Friday that negotiations between Cole
and Stoke did not break down because he asked for too much money. "He was
discussing wage parity with other key players and was well within his right
to do so," the spokesman added. The Hammers, who were relegated to the
Championship last season, also dismissed reports that Cole had an ongoing
injury problem. Stoke chairman Peter Coates confirmed on Tuesday that a fee
- believed to be an initial £4m with a possible £2m in add-ons - had been
agreed, although he also questioned Cole's fitness. "Cole has got an injury
problem and he's always had that," said Coates. Cole is now preparing for
Wednesday's friendly at FC Copenhagen, and insists that he is ready for what
will be a demanding season in the Championship as they seek immediate
promotion back to the Premier League. The England international joined West
Ham from Chelsea in July 2006 and has scored 42 goals in 165 appearances.

Carlton Cole insists he remains as committed as ever to West Ham after
seeing his move to Stoke fall through. The England international's proposed
move to Stoke fell through on Friday after the Hammers had already accepted
an undisclosed bid for his services. The exact reason as to why the deal
collapsed is not known although West Ham released a statement suggesting the
England international was unable to agree personal terms, at the same time
dismissing reports of an injury as well as speculation his wage demands were
too high. Cole insists he is happy to stay at Upton Park and help them try
and win promotion back to the Premier League unless he is told otherwise. "I
am a West Ham player and have no knowledge that is going to be any
different. Unless I am told something different, I am a West Ham player and
will be doing my all for the team. " "I am as committed to West Ham as
always," Cole told the club's official website. "I am a West Ham player and
have no knowledge that is going to be any different. Unless I am told
something different, I am a West Ham player and will be doing my all for the
team. "There has been a lot of things reported and that it was a done deal
that I was moving to another club, but that is not the case and I want our
fans to know, unless I am told anything different, I am as committed as ever
to the team and getting the club back in the Premier League."

Redknapp rules out purchase of costly Parker
ESPN staff
July 17, 2011
ESPN

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has ruled out any potential move for Scott
Parker, declaring the deal to be too costly. Interest in England
international Parker is high following West Ham's relegation to the
Championship, with Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham amongst those linked
with a bid. The Hammers have also made it known that they would consider
releasing the midfielder on loan for the right fee. However, Redknapp has
ruled out any move for Parker, telling the Sunday Mirror that Tottenham
would not sanction the money involved. The north London club generally stick
to a policy of targeting younger players, and Parker does not fit that
criteria.
"If you take into account the fee of around £8 million, signing-on fees and
wages, you're talking about a £30 million deal," Redknapp said. "There is no
way the club would sanction a deal for a 30-year-old who would have no
resale value at the end of his contract." However, the situation could
change if Luka Modric manages to secure a transfer out of Tottenham. Modric
has made it known that he wants to join Chelsea and, depending on the time
Spurs are left with to find a replacement, Parker may represent the best
short-term option should the Croatian get his wish.

Former Gillingham assistant manager Ian Hendon makes first appearance as
development coach at West Ham United
KentOnline.co.uk

Ian Hendon made his first showing in West Ham colours on Saturday afternoon.
Hendon, who has spent the last year working as number two to Andy
Hessenthaler at Gillingham, has been appointed as development coach with the
Championship outfit. No official announcement has been made by either club
about Hendon's switch, with Gills chairman Paul Scally insisting last week
that the deal was far from complete. Hendon, pictured, watched West Ham's
friendly match against Bishop's Stortford from the bench at the weekend
along with first-team coach Wally Downes, who spent a brief time coaching
the Gills last season. West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has worked with Hendon
previously at Notts County, where he made him captain during the club's
promotion-winning campaign from Division 3. Hendon's exit means Hessenthaler
could be looking for a new number two. At present he has been receiving help
on match days from community manager Pete Sawyer and fitness coach Barry
Rowden.

Hodgson pondering a move for West Ham striker Cole after Stoke snub

West Brom are considering a move for West Ham striker Carlton Cole following
the collapse of his £4.2million move to Stoke. Cole declared his commitment
to the West Ham cause on Sunday despite their desire to get him off the wage
bill. Albion, on tour in the US, will hold a meeting with former Manchester
United midfielder Owen Hargreaves in Portland on Wednesday. Manager Roy
Hodgson has concerns about his fitness but sporting and technical director
Dan Ashworth said: 'If he is fit to play in the Premier League, it is a
no-brainer.'

Parker in Villa's sights while McLeish starts £20m spree with N'Zogbia
By Sam Wallace, Football Correspondent
Monday, 18 July 2011
The Independent

Alex McLeish hopes to persuade Scott Parker to join Aston Villa this week,
when the new Villa manager looks to begin spending the proceeds of Stewart
Downing's £20m sale on Charles N'Zogbia, Shay Given and the West Ham
captain.

The deal with Wigan Athletic for N'Zogbia has already been agreed and the
player, who will cost around £10m, should sign this week. Manchester City
want £5m for Given and have already rejected a bid of £2m from Villa but
should settle for between £3m and £4m.

Parker, 30, has been looked at by Arsenal and Tottenham as a possible
acquisition this summer. Spurs have been slow off the mark in this transfer
window with chairman Daniel Levy focusing his efforts on selling around six
squad players – they have taken 28 on tour to South Africa – including David
Bentley, Jermaine Jenas and Wilson Palacios before he starts sanctioning new
signings.

McLeish hopes that he can use the Downing money from Liverpool to sign
Parker this week. The midfielder is valued at around £9m and has been the
subject of interest from his former club Chelsea, who would like him on
loan. For Villa, a return of three players with the revenue from Downing
shows why the club were prepared to sell the England winger. The club are
also on the look-out for a left-back, with Stephen Warnock keen to move back
to the north-west.

The former Villa manager Gérard Houllier claimed yesterday that he still had
"unfinished business" in the game even though heart problems in April
eventually forced him to step down from the manager's job. He said he would
"definitely be linked with football" in the future.

"We had a case of unfinished business [at Villa]," he added. "There was an
option of leaving the team to Gary McAllister, who was my assistant, and I
would come back in September but the chairman and owner wanted to go another
route and I have to respect that. We left on good terms, no acrimony.

"I just want to make sure I get fit again and then we'll see. But I will
follow the doctors' advice and if the advice is not to get back into
management, I won't. The strong advice was not to go back to business until
the end of September but they are happy with the recovery."

B.Stortford 0-3 West Ham United XI
Junior Stanislas, Olly Lee and Jack Collison are on target in a comfortable
pre-season victory
16.07.2011

BISHOP'S STORTFORD v WEST HAM UNITED XI
PRE-SEASON MATCH
SATURDAY 16 JULY 2011
KICK-OFF: 3PM

Final score - Bishop's Stortford 0-3 West Ham United XI

92 mins - Referee Hodges blows his whistle and that is that. That was a good
workout for West Ham, who return to action on Wednesday evening in Denmark,
where they take on FC Copenhagen. Back on these shores, the Hammers travel
to Wycombe Wanderers a week today and Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday 26
July. Don't forget, both whufc.com and West Ham TV will have exclusive
highlights and post-match reaction from Woodside Park.
90 mins - Into added-time and West Ham come close again. Sanchez's cross is
headed back across goal by Montano and the Spaniard follows in and smashes a
shot that hits a defender and goes behind. The corner is too strong and I
would think that time is nearly up.
89 mins - The sun is shining brightly here at Woodside Park and West Ham
have also shone this afternoon. The home side have worked hard and made West
Ham work hard for their victory. For the Hammers, it is a real positive to
see Parker, Noble and Collison back in action. Montano has also caught the
eye with his play.
87 mins - Today's attendance is announced as 810.
86 mins - Stortford have battled gamely and come close again as the ball
drops to Prestedge, but his shot is too close to Stech, who collects.
84 mins - So close to 4-0 and a deserved goal for Montano. Collison wins the
ball on the edge of the box and slides it inside for Montano, but his
well-struck shot is beaten away by Wright. It drops to McCallum, whose
volley hits a defender and goes out for a corner. The corner is delivered to
the near post and nothing comes from it.
82 mins - GOAL! Stortford have a free-kick that Stech punches clear to
Parker. Montano does well to slide a superb ball to Collison on halfway. The
No15 races clear of the defence before dancing around the goalkeeper and
slotting into the unguarded net with his left foot.
81 mins - Fry is beaten to the ball and it is worked to Francis. He takes a
touch and shoots low across Stech. The big goalkeeper throws out his right
hand and pushes the ball away.
78 mins - Montano puts in a superb cross from the left but it's too strong
for McCallum. A Stortford player needs the physio on and during the break in
play, Hall comes on for Lletget.
76 mins - The three midfielders have shifted positions. Noble is the one
sitting now.
75 mins - Robert Hall is going to come on the for the final few minutes. It
will be the forward's third appearance in six days. He did very well on the
pre-season tour in Switzerland, particularly catching the eye in Monday's
game against BSC Young Boys.
74 mins - Lettejallow meets the corner with a firm header, but he directs
the ball straight into the turf. It bounces up and over the crossbar.
73 mins - A chance for Stortford to deliver the ball into the box as Driver
brings down Salah. The free-kick is cleared, but the hosts keep up the
pressure and win a corner. Good spirit from Ian Walker's men.
70 mins - Good play again from Montano, who beats a man and loses his
footing. He gets up quickly and then finds Lletget. The American feeds the
ball back to Montano, who goes past a defender before shooting low into the
side-netting at the near post.
68 mins - Neat feet from Montano and Noble inside the box. Noble tries to
pick out Collison, but a defender gets a toe in and Stortford clear. One of
the 'No number' players beats McNaughton with decent pace and finds a
team-mate, but he delays too long and Parker gets in a strong and well-timed
tackle.
67 mins - Bishop's Stortford are pretty much watching West Ham pass the ball
around. It's not as if they are playing poorly - they just can't get the
ball from a West Ham team that has three top-class midfielders running the
show.
64 mins - Montano is on fire! He beats two men again and slips the ball in
for Lletget. He takes a touch and shoots from 18 yards, but the ball goes a
yard or two wide of the far post.
63 mins - Montano is an elusive runner with more pace than he is perhaps
given credit for. He slips past one defender and then a second before being
hauled to the ground. Superb play. Driver is at left-back, Sanchez at
right-back and Fry has gone in alongside McNaughton. McCallum is up front.
62 mins - Brown, Spence, Reid and Nouble are the quartet replaced. Parker
has the captain's armband on.
61 mins - Collison does well in midfield, collecting a pass from Noble and
trying to feed a through ball to Nouble. It's just too strong and goalkeeper
Wright dives out to claim.
59 mins - Fitness coach Swift whistles loudly to the substitutes to come
back to the bench. We'll see Sanchez, Fry, McCallum and Driver soon.
55 mins - Brown and Montano combine to clear from deep inside the West Ham
half. Montano romps down the left wing, but Collison's sweeping pass is too
high and too strong and flies out for a throw. The Wales international
raises his hand in apology.
54 mins - Noble and Parker are painting pretty patterns in the centre of
midfield, popping passes around with speed and accuracy. The sun has come
out again, but for how long?
52 mins - Noble shows his class with a delightful pass inside right-back
Lettejallow for Brown. He crosses and Nouble gets there first, but cannot
direct his effort on target under pressure from Phillip.
51 mins - Collison and Noble work the corner short but the latter's delivery
to the near post is volleyed clear. It looks like the game will follow a
similar pattern, with the Hammers well on top.
50 mins - Nouble chests down for Montano on halfway and the winger runs 50
yards before a defender slides in and knocks the ball over the fence behind
the goal. Another corner.
49 mins - Lletget picks out the run of Spence with a neat pass. The
overlapping full-back slides a cross inside towards Nouble, but a defender
cuts it out. Corner. Montano's delivery is high and goalkeeper Wright comes
out and punches clear.
48 mins - Stortford's new team has three players in it with no numbers on
their backs. Interesting.
46 mins - We're off and running again. West Ham's formation is unchanged,
with Parker in front of the back four and Noble and Collison in central
midfield.

Parker is wearing the No12 shirt, Collison the No15 and Noble the No16.
Moncur, Lee and Abdulla have gone off. Kick-off is delayed slightly while
Collison puts on a GPS vest. Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce is signing autographs
for some young fans.

Half-time score - Bishop's Stortford 0-2 West Ham United XI

Bishop's Stortford's second-half team will be Wright, Lettejallow, Anderson,
Hahn, Olafunmishe, Boueno, Thomson, Prestedge, Francis, McKenzie and Salah.
No news yet on any changes for the Hammers, but Parker, Collison and Noble
are all out warming-up on the pitch, along with the other substitutes.

46 mins - The half-time whistle is blown. That was, for the most part, a
comfortable 45 minutes for the Hammers. Stortford are going to field a
completely new XI after the break.
45 mins - Downes is telling his players to 'Keep the ball inside Stortford's
half'. They do just that as a diagonal pass drops to Montano 25 yards out.
He takes a touch and slams a low shot across Eyre and wide of the far post.
Good effort.
44 mins - West Ham's players are working hard when Stortford have the ball,
which is encouraging. If they work as hard as their opponents, then the
Hammers' greater quality will shine through and more chances will be
created.
42 mins - Lletget spreads play wide right for Spence, who controls well. He
cuts inside and tries to pick out Nouble, but the ball clips Moncur and runs
away from the striker. Unlucky, that. West Ham appear to have weathered the
Stortford storm.
41 mins - Brown crosses from the left and a clearing header drops to Lee,
but he can't control and Habu clears. Collison joins Parker on the
touchline. I wonder if both will be on at half-time?
40 mins - Parker emerges for a warm-up run along the touchline. The Hammer
of the Year receives some applause from the stands.
38 mins - Calver has come alive, collecting a pass from Tyriaki before
beating Spence. After a couple of tricks, Reid pokes the ball behind.
Dadson's corner flashes across the six-yard box and out for a goal kick.
Downes shouts at his players to up their game.
37 mins - The hosts are having a little spell here as Calver's cross is
headed behind by McNaughton. Again, West Ham fail to clear their lines and
Dadson loses Moncur before shooting at the near post, but Stech is there to
make an easy catch.
35 mins - A first chance for Stortford as Reid concedes free-kick 25 yards
from goal. Tyriaki takes it and the ball takes a nick off Brown and goes
behind. Brown wins the header from the corner and then blocks a cross.
Stortford stay on the offensive as McNaughton and Nouble fail to properly
clear their lines, but when Calver tries a trick, he loses control and the
ball goes behind for a goal kick.
34 mins - Lletget robs Braithwaite down the left touchline and finds Moncur.
He skips past a challenge and gets to the edge of the box on the right-hand
side, but his slide-rule pass inside for Nouble is wayward and Nouble
collects.
30 mins - The supporters are running for cover to escape the deluge from the
skies! On the pitch, West Ham are in total control of proceedings. Stech has
been a virtual spectator for the opening half-hour.
28 mins - I spoke too soon, there. Stanislas is replaced by Montano. The
Colombia-born player heads over to the left wing. The rain is absolutely
chucking it down, drumming on the roof of the stand.
27 mins - Stanislas again. He shoots from the angle but this time it's too
high. The winger has looked really sharp in pre-season. He also looks to
have a real hunger to make his mark next term.
26 mins - Patient build-up play from the Hammers involving Lletget, Lee and
Stanislas before Moncur shoots low from 25 yards. He drags it wide of the
left-hand post,
23 mins - Abdulla spreads play wide to the right for Spence. He plays in
Moncur, who tries to pick out the run of Nouble. The big striker is offside,
though. If he can time those runs, he certainly has the pace to get away
from his marker.
21 mins - Manager Allardyce is sitting two rows in front of me in the main
stand here and I'm sure he's been impressed with what he has seen so far.
Saying that, Stortford are coming into things a little more.
18 mins - It's belting it down again here. In fact, one might even say it's
raining goals! If West Ham can maintain their level, this could be very
convincing. Lee crosses from the left and Nouble jumps and glances his
header wide. Lletget was behind Nouble and may have been better placed, but
we shall never know.
17 mins - GOAL! Spence lays the ball inside the full-back again and Nouble
shows his power to hold off Abdullahi. He shoots low and the ball beats Eyre
and cannons back off the base of the far post. Lee follows up and side-foots
home from eight yards.
16 mins - Stortford are having real trouble maintaining any sort of
possession.
13 mins - The goal was coming and was no more than West Ham deserve. To be
honest, they're completely dominating the game. Cole is penalised for
handball and Stanislas has another chance to deliver. This time, he collects
the ball short and shoots from 25 yards. It dips just over the top.
11 mins - GOAL! Stanislas takes the free-kick square to Abdulla, who
immediately lays it back to the No9. He looks up and crosses into the danger
zone. McNaughton slides but makes no contact, but his effort wrong-foots
Eyre and the ball bounces high into the top right-hand corner. Stanislas
takes the plaudits, but I'm not sure he meant it! Two goals in two games for
the winger.
10 mins - Jordan Brown is brought down near the left touchline midway inside
the Stortford half. Stanislas to take...
8 mins - That's another chance for the Hammers. Spence threads a neat ball
inside the full-back for Nouble. He looks to be in on goal, but instead
crosses for Moncur. The midfielder's touch is a bit loose and his lay-off
for Stanislas is cut out. Shame.
6 mins - The ball is worked, via a deflection, to Spence on the right wing,
Downes urges him to 'Get at 'em', so he does before crossing towards the far
post. Lee slides in, but cannot get sufficient power on the ball to divert
it past Eyre.
4 mins - It looks to me that West Ham are playing in a 4-1-4-1 formation.
Spence, Reid, McNaughton and Brown are across the back, with Abdulla in
front of the back four. Lletget, Moncur, Lee and Stanislas are across the
midfield, with Nouble up front.
3 mins - It's all West Ham in the early going but they've not forged an
opening yet. Lee finds Moncur through the middle, but he over-hits his pass
to Nouble and the ball rolls out for a throw.
2 mins - Abdulla looks lively in the early going as he wins the ball from
left-back Braithwaite. Lletget is involved before Spence crosses high
towards Nouble, but the striker is offside.
1 min - Spence gets forward well down the right and receives a pass from
Abdulla, but his cross is short and easily cut out.

3.01pm - We're off and running...

2.58pm - West Ham United are led out by captain Winston Reid. Bishop's
Stortford are being captained by Mo Habu. The two teams shake hands and
break away into their respective halves. Reid hands a commemorative pennant
to Ian Walker and we're nearly ready to go. Referee Rob Hodges calls the two
captains together and the home side will kick-off, shooting towards the
Stansted Airport end of the stadium.

2.55pm - The two teams have headed back to their respective dressing rooms
ahead of kick-off.

2.50pm - Bishop's Stortford are managed by Ian Walker, who is still sporting
his famous 'curtains' haircut. He is also wearing a very distinctive light
grey suit.

2.45pm - There are so many players on the pitch warming up that you would
think we've had a pitch invasion! Seriously, though, this fixture represents
a big opportunity for the club's young players to shine in front of manager
Sam Allardyce. Particularly those who didn't travel with the squad to
Switzerland will be keen to turn it on. However, the home side will also be
desperate to impress and gain themselves a big scalp. I reckon we're in for
a competitive game.

2.40pm - The rain has stopped, thankfully. The sun did pop its head through
the clouds for a short while but it has now disappeared again. Saying that,
I reckon we could be set fair for a dry 90 minutes.

2.35pm - You've got to hand it to Bishop's Stortford. With things getting
ever more difficult for non-league clubs financially, they have arranged a
pre-season meeting with Gabala FC - the Azerbaijan Premier League side
managed by former Arsenal and England manager Tony Adams. On 26 August,
Woodside Park will also play host to England's Under-17s for a friendly
match against Czech Republic.

2.22pm - Bishop's Stortford are going to play two XIs, with each playing 45
minutes each - barring injury. The first half XI is Eyre, Jeffries,
Braithwaite, Abdullahi, Habu, Jones, Cole, Hanchip, Calver, Tyriaki and
Dadson.

2.20pm - West Ham United's starting XI and substitutes have been named. The
big news is that Scott Parker, Mark Noble and Jack Collison are all on the
bench and in line to make their first appearances of the pre-season. The
starting XI in full is Stech, Spence, Reid, McNaughton, Brown, Abdulla,
Moncur, Lee, Stanislas, Nouble and Lletget. The substitutes are Larkins,
Parker, Noble, Collison, Hall, Driver, Fry, McCallum, Sanchez and Montano.

1.50pm - A West Ham United XI also visited Bishop's Stortford on 29 July
2010, when the Hammers ran out 4-0 winners. Freddie Sears scored all four
goals in a comprehensive victory.

1.40pm - It's rain, rain, rain all the way here at Bishop's Stortford as new
development coach Ian Hendon and fitness coach Eamon Swift emerge from the
tunnel to prepare the pitch for the Hammers' pre-match warm-up. The official
website and West Ham TV will have an exclusive first interview with Hendon
soon.
Good afternoon and welcome to the familiar surroundings of Woodside Park for
this afternoon's pre-season match between Bishop's Stortford and a West Ham
United XI. It is wet and, to be honest, the weather is downright horrible
here on the Essex/Hertfordshire border.
First-team coach Wally Downes is in charge of the Hammers this afternoon,
but manager Sam Allardyce is also in attendance to watch a young side take
on the Blue Square North newcomers.
Mark Noble, Jack Collison and Scott Parker are all included in a matchday
squad for the first time in pre-season, having travelled with the squad to
their six-day training camp in Switzerland.
Of the other players who travelled to Switzerland, Marek Stech, Winston
Reid, Jordan Spence, Jordan Brown, George Moncur, Olly Lee, Junior
Stanislas, Frank Nouble and Robert Hall have all been named in today's
squad.
Alongside them, young professionals Callum Driver, Callum McNaughton, Matt
Fry, Sebastian Lletget and Ahmed Abdulla will all be eager to make their
mark in front of Allardyce.
Bishop's Stortford, who are managed by former Tottenham Hotspur and England
goalkeeper Ian Walker, have been moved into the Blue Square North this
season following the expulsion of Rushden & Diamonds.
Woodside Park, of course, has played host to West Ham's reserve team
regularly in recent seasons. Defender McNaughton will feel especially at
home, having been born in the town and spent a period on loan with Bishop's
Stortford last season.

Carlton 'feeling positive'
WHUFC.com
The club's second-longest serving player is feeling good and ready for the
new season ahead
16.07.2011

Carlton Cole is stepping up his pre-season work having returned to action in
a West Ham United shirt. The England striker is set to travel with the rest
of the squad for Wednesday's match away to FC Copenhagen having made his
first appearance of the pre-season in last week's match with FC Basel. He
looked more than lively and Cole is more than prepared to cope with the
rigours of a lengthy Championship campaign. "I am feeling positive," he told
whufc.com. "I have been doing some work on my own as well as with the rest
of the team out in our training camp in Switzerland. I then came on in our
game on Wednesday and it was good to play. I feel good and strong."

Cole, who is the club's second longest-serving player, is renowned as one of
the hardest workers at Chadwell Heath and usually among the last to leave at
the end of the day. While speculation remains over the future of the club's
England players, with Premier League sides constantly linked with approaches
- Cole is focused only on the task at hand. The 27-year-old, who played 43
times last season, scoring eleven goals, added: "I am as committed to West
Ham as always. I am a West Ham player and have no knowledge that is going to
be any different. Unless I am told something different, I am a West Ham
player and will be doing my all for the team.
"There has been a lot of things reported and that it was a done deal that I
was moving to another club, but that is not the case and I want our fans to
know, unless I am told anything different, I am as committed as ever to the
team and getting the club back in the Premier League."

Allardyce pulled Eidur deal

Eidur Gudjohnsen's transfer to West Ham fell through after the plug was
pulled by Sam Allardyce. According to a source at West Ham, Allardyce
withdrew the contract offer after failing to be sufficiently convinced by
the 32-year-old striker's desire to play for the club. The West Ham boss met
Gudjohnsen - who had already passed a medical - on Friday, the day after he
returned from Switzerland with the first team squad. Allardyce had insisted
on speaking with the former Barcelona and Chelsea star prior to agreeing a
deal.

Allardyce is understood to have expressed his reservations following that
meeting - and before Gudjohnsen's father, who also acts as his business
representative, told West Ham later in the day that AEK Athens had entered
the race to sign his son. According to the club source, Allardyce pulled the
plug on the deal first thing this morning having decided that signing the
much-travelled Gudjohnsen would not be in the club's best interests, leaving
the path clear for AEK to sign the out-of-contract forward. Rumours that the
deal to sign Gudjohnsen was cancelled due to Carlton Cole's refusal to join
Stoke were also dismissed by the source.

Bishops Stortford 0 West Ham Utd XI 3

Scott Parker, Mark Noble and Jack Collison all made their first appearances
of pre-season as a West Ham XI strolled to victory in the pouring rain. Led
by Wally Downes under the watchful eye of Sam Allardyce in the stands, the
Hammers recorded their first victory of pre-season at Woodside Park this
afternoon through goals from Junior Stanislas, Olly Lee and Collison. Having
started strongly it was no surprise when the Hammers took an 11th minute
lead through Junior Stanislas, whose cross somehow evaded everyone in the
box before nestling in the back of the home side's net.

With Bishops Stortford still reeling from Stanislas' freak opener, West Ham
were two-nil up just six minutes later. Olly Lee was alert enough to be
first to react to a Frank Nouble strike that cannoned off the woodwork
following some good build-up play by United. Stanislas, who had looked sharp
in the game's opening stages was replaced just ahead of the half-hour mark
much to his obvious disappointment. However that failed to dampen the
spirits of his team mates who saw out the half with some ease.

With Noble, Parker and Collison all introduced at the break West Ham
continued to control the game. The only surprise was that the 810 hardy
souls in the stands who had braved the driving rain had to wait until the
82nd minute to see a third West Ham goal. However for Hammers fans in
attendance it was a goal well worth waiting for, as Jack Collison completed
the victory with a 60-yard run that culminated with him rounding the
goalkeeper and planting the ball into the empty net. A number of the players
featuring at Woodside Park today will join the rest of the first team squad
when they travel to Denmark early next week for Wednesday night's friendly
with FC Copenhagen. The match is being broadcast on Danish TV.

Hammers cancel deal for Iceland striker

West Ham have pulled the plug on signing Eidur Gudjohnsen. The Icelandic
striker seemed all set to sign for the east London club after having a

But West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was unhappy that the player stalled on
putting pen to paper and ended his interest in the experienced forward.

Carlton Cole turned his back on a move to Stoke after the club wouldn't
offer him the same wages as striker Kenwyne Jones. Jones is reported to be

£40,000, claiming they had a strict salary cap in place.

Abramovich to make final decision on West Ham ace
Published 23:00 16/07/11 By Paul Smith
The Mirror

Roman Abramovich will make the final decision on whether or not to sign West
Ham's Scott Parker next week. Chelsea made an informal enquiry about Parker
on Thursday regarding a loan or permanent deal. But the England midfield ace
has already informed the Hammers he has no wish to go out on loan, which
would have been the preferred option for the Championship club. Now it's up
to Blues owner Abramovich whether or not to sanction a move. Aston Villa are
watching the situation but claims they have made a £7m bid have been
dismissed. The fee the Hammers are demanding to allow Parker to be sold or
go out on loan has cooled interest in him. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who
was tipped to make a move for Parker, said the figures didn't add up and he
understood his club's reluctance to bid. "If you take into account the fee
of around £8m, signing on fees and wages you're talking about a £30m deal,"
said Redknapp. "There is no way the club would sanction a deal for a
30-year-old who would have no resale value at the end of his contract."
Parker earns £65,000 a week at Upton Park and when he signed a new four-year
deal in September last year, no provision was made for a cut in wages if the
club were relegated. West Ham were prepared to let Parker join a club on a
season-long loan but wanted £4.5m and Parker's wages covered. But that was
taken off the table when Parker said he would rather stay at the Hammers
than go on loan.

Allardyce: I pulled the plug on Gudjohnsen West Ham deal

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has pulled the plug on the deal to sign Iceland
international striker Eidur Gudjohnsen. The 32-year-old, who was released by
Stoke City at the end of last season, passed a medical at Upton Park on
Thursday and the deal seemed set to go through. But the Hammers pulled out
of the deal when the striker, who was on loan at Fulham last season, failed
to make a decision. "The bottom line was that for me, Eidur had enough time
to make a decision," explained the West Ham manager. "The time I gave him
elapsed so instead of us sitting and waiting for him, I decided from my
point of view that it was better to call the deal off."
Allardyce had made a new striker his top priority in the transfer window and
he was frustrated that he could not secure the signature of the player who
played under him at Bolton Wanderers. "I am very disappointed because I
thought the deal was done and dusted yesterday," he said. "But what happened
is his father flew in last night and something happened between me finishing
with him and his father arriving. "There must have been another deal that
appeared somewhere else, but irrespective of that, Eidur needed to give me a
decision, he didn't, so I made the decision for both of us by nor pursing
him."

Gudjohnsen is said to be having talks with Greek side Panathinaikos, while
Allardyce will continue with his striker search. So has he got a back-up
plan? "Not yet!" he admitted.

Allardyce: It was good to give West Ham trio a game

Bishop Stortford 0 West Ham 3

Scott Parker, Mark Noble and Jack Collison all played their first game of
pre-season as the Hammers eased to a 3-0 victory over Blue Square North side
Bishop's Stortford on Saturday. The West Ham midfield trip played the second
half and Collison rounded off a promising display with a goal close to the
end, but the Hammers had already carved out a 2-0 first-half lead by the
time they were introduced. A crowd of 810 braved the torrential rain both
before and during this friendly clash and they were rewarded with a
competent performance from a young Hammers side. It took West Ham just 11
minutes to open the scoring. They won a free kick out on the left wing and
when Junior Stanislas swung the ball in, it was missed by every defender as
well as young Hammers centre half Callum McNaughton as it slipped into the
net by the far post.

Stanislas was looking very lively and twice went close with shots from the
edge of the box, before limping off halfway through the half with a slight
groin injury. By then West Ham had made it 2-0. Striker Frank Nouble turned
his man in the area and when his low shot unluckily struck the far post, it
rebounded straight into the path of Olly Lee who rammed it home. Manager Sam
Allardyce watched the game from the stand and he must have been impressed by
the likes of Jordan Spence, Jordan Brown and Cristian Montano as they
continued to harry the Stortford defence.

West Ham's three star men were on from the start of the second half and for
much of the second 45 minutes it was a case of keep ball for the Hammers as
Stortford were left chasing the ball. A superb turn, dribble and pass from
Montano released Sebastien Lletget only for him to shoot inches wide with
just the keeper to beat, but Montano's pass proved more effective in the
last couple of minutes as he picked out Collison's timely run and the
midfielder rounded the goalkeeper before touching into an empty net to
complete the scoring.

Allardyce was pleased with the performance as well as getting the chance to
play some of his more experienced players. "It was good to see Mark Noble
getting a game because he had a slight problem out in Switzerland," revealed
the Hammers boss. "We were able to give him half a game today which is good
and the same with Scott (Parker) and Jack (Collison). "It was good to see
them and it looks like a comfortable victory for us."

West Ham: Stech, Spence (Sanchez), McNaughton, Reid (Fry), Brown (Driver),
Abdullah (Noble), Lee (Collison), Moncur (Parker), Stanislas (Montano),
Lletget (Hall), Nouble (McCallum).

West Ham and Birmingham weigh up move for Sunderland Centre Back
July 17, 2011 · 0 Comments

Both West Ham United and Birmingham City are considering making a bid for
Sunderland's Anton Ferdinand, with reports that Ferdinand is considering his
future at the Stadium of Light. This comes about as a result of new arrivals
Wes Brown and John O' Shea from Manchester United joining Steve Bruce's
squad and Ferdinand worrying about his future first team involvement on
Wearside. An established part of the first eleven at Sunderland since
joining from West Ham in 2008, the 26 year old is concerned that the new
arrivals could seriously threaten his position in the team. Whether
Ferdinand would consider dropping down to the Championship though is
entirely another matter. But both Birmingham and West Ham are considered two
of the front runners to gain promotion back to the Premier League at the
first time of asking next term. It is not thought though that Steve Bruce
would even consider selling Ferdinand and it would probably take an over the
odds fee for Bruce to accept.

JAMES TOMKINS IS SAM ALLARDYCE'S TOP MAN
17th July 2011 By Tony Stenson
Daily Star

WEST HAM have opened talks on a new deal for blossoming centre-half James
Tomkins. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce wants to mould the England Under-21 star
into the bedrock of his future defence. The departure of skipper Matthew
Upson on a free at the end of last season and the sale of Portuguese Manuel
da Costa to Russians Lokomotiv Moscow has opened the door for Tomkins. He
still has two years left on his current contract but both player and
Allardyce are keen to thrash out a new, long-term deal with a
performance-related pay rise to tie him to the club. Several Premier League
clubs including Stoke and Bolton have sniffed around Tomkins after West
Ham's relegation to the Championship last season. Allardyce has brought in
Abdoulaye Faye from Stoke to bolster the defence but the manager is also
anxious to retain the club's best young players to push for an immediate
return to the Premier League. Talks are also ongoing with sought-after Wales
midfielder Jack Collison.

Gudjohnsen: third time unlucky
KUMB.com
Filed: Saturday, 16th July 2011
By: Staff Writer

Eidur Gudjohnsen's decision to reject a move to West Ham is the third time
in four years that he has spurned an offer from the club. KUMB.com revealed
earlier today that the 32-year-old had snubbed West Ham by accepting an
offer from Greek club AEK. However that news will have come as little
surprise to Hammers fans who have now seen the player reject a move to
London THREE times. Back in the summer of 2007, shortly after Eggert
Magnusson and Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson had purchased West Ham Gudjohnsen was
linked with a move to east London for the first time. Reports suggested
that a deal was agreed in principal - although the then 29-year-old opted to
remain at Barcelona and fight for a first team place instead. Undeterred,
West Ham - managed at the time by Gianfranco Zola -went back in for
Gudjohnsen, by this time at Monaco during the 2010 winter transfer window.
But despite having paid for the Icelandic international to stay in London
for a week - during which time he underwent a medical - West Ham were
furious when Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp stole the player from their
clutches. Despite reservations about Gudjohnsen's character - and with Sam
Allardyce in control of the club's transfer policy - the board sanctioned a
fresh move for the player last week. Positive negotiations ended with a
contract offer being made - and yet another medical being undertaken -
although once again, Gudjohnsen looks like leaving West Ham in the lurch.

Eidur Gudjohnsen is set to sign for AEK Athens' following an eleventh-hour
bid by the Greek side. Athens are understood to have sent representatives to
London yesterday in a bid to hijack Gudjohnsen's move to the Boleyn Ground,
which looked a done deal yesterday after the 32-year-old completed his
medical at the club.
News from Greece this morning suggests Gudjohnsen met with former Icelandic
international and current AEK Director of Football Arnar Gretarsson in order
to discuss a two-year with the Enosis. A six-hour meeting with Gretarsson
and fellow AEK Director George Constantinides last night is said to have
concluded with the former Chelsea and Barcelona striker being offered a
two-year contract - double the length of the deal offered by West Ham.
Although no formal announcement has yet been made, Greek sources are
claiming this morning that Gudjohnsen has accepted AEK's offer - although an
announcement will be be delayed until he has had the opportunity to inform
Sam Allardyce of his decision. As always, more on this as it happens.

Dyer backing Allardyce
KUMB.com
Filed: Friday, 15th July 2011
By: Staff Writer

Kieron Dyer has backed Sam Allardyce to lead West Ham back to the Premier
League at the first attempt. The former Hammer, who signed for Premier
League newcomers Queens Park Rangers last week following his release from
West Ham believes that his former club will secure a swift return to the top
flight under Allardyce's command. "I'm sure with the squad they're
assembling again down there, they'll be back where they belong," Dyer told
Talksport. "Because the Premier League is a better place with West Ham in
it. "I was with Sam for a little bit at Newcastle. He's a proven manager
and he knows what it is to win games. But people like to say that he doesn't
play attractive football. "With the squad they've got - they're keeping hold
of Mark Noble, have Kevin Nolan and maybe Scotty will be staying there -
they'll be fine and I think they'll walk that division. Or I hope they do,
anyway."

Dyer, who started less than 20 first team matches during his four years in
east London due to a succession of injuries also revealed his frustration at
not beng able to play a bigger role last season, a season that culminated
with West ham being relegated from the Premier League. "I wasn't quite 100
per cent fit but because we were struggling, you try to help the team and
play when you really shouldn't - and that's when i started to get my thigh
problem," Dyer confessed. "But what can you do when you're struggling? You
want to help your team and your team mates out in some way. Unfortunately
that wasn't to be."

Villa bid for Parker
McLeish continues recruitment plans with £7m offer for midfielder
Last Updated: July 15, 2011 9:45pm

.
Skysports.com understands Aston Villa have made a £7million bid for West Ham
star Scott Parker. The England international is certain to leave Upton Park
this summer after the club suffered relegation from the Premier League last
season. Parker, who is under contract until 2014, has been linked with a
return to former club Chelsea, with West Ham admitting they may agree a loan
deal. But Villa's bid could persuade Hammers co-owners David Gold and David
Sullivan that a permanent sale is the better option.

Wage bill

Villa will have money to spend when the £19million sale of England winger
Stewart Downing is confirmed and they are understood to have bid for Wigan's
Charles N'Zogbia. New Villa boss Alex McLeish is attempting to make changes
to his side and a fee has also been agreed with Manchester City for
goalkeeper Shay Given.
Parker, the 2010/11 Football Writers' Association Player of the Season, is
also on McLeish's wanted list and it remains to be seen how West Ham
respond. They will need to cut their wage bill after dropping into the
Championship and it was reported on Thursday that they wanted Chelsea to pay
£4m plus Parker's wages for a loan.
Chelsea are in need of midfield cover after Michael Essien was ruled out
for up to six months following knee surgery, but boss Andre Villas-Boas may
not want a permanent signing.

Cole move breaks down
Personal terms appear to be reason for striker staying at Upton Park
Last Updated: July 15, 2011 9:25pm

West Ham seem to have suggested Carlton Cole's move to Stoke has broken down
because the striker could not agree personal terms. The Potters agreed a fee
for the 27-year-old earlier this week, but the Hammers revealed on Friday
evening Cole would be staying put. The exact reason as to why the deal has
collapsed is not known, although West Ham released a statement which
provided some reasoning. It read: "Carlton has not asked for a transfer and
has remained committed to the club at all times. "In being given permission
to talk to Stoke, the negotiations did not break down as a result of him
asking for too much money. He was discussing wage parity with other key
players and was well within his right to do so. "Further, there is no issue
in terms of his reported 'injury problems'. An England striker, he played 43
games last season." The statement added: "Carlton remains part of the West
Ham United first-team squad under Sam Allardyce." Cole joined West Ham from
Chelsea in July 2006 and has scored 42 goals in 165 appearances.

info and being misdiagnosed. "I was out with a hamstring injury for nearly a
full season. I'd get back, injure it again and see a specialist, who'd say
'Why've you been doing that?'. "A number of times I lost months of the

Parker set for Chelsea - but not on loan
Published 00:10 16/07/11 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

Scott Parker remains on course to make a return to Chelsea - but they would
rather buy the West Ham talisman outright than take him on loan. The Blues
are looking for a midfielder having lost Michael Essien to a knee injury for
half the season. West Ham had been seeking a £4million loan fee for Parker,
30, but Chelsea are said to be uninterested in paying that much to borrow
the Footballer of the Year when they could own him outright for slightly
more. Negotiations are set to take in the fact that West Ham bought Kevin
Nolan - who is a year younger than fellow midfielder Parker - from Newcastle
for just £3m earlier this summer yet are seeking around £8m for their star
man.

Aston Villa lead Chelsea in £7m chase for wantaway West Ham skipper Parker
By Sami Mokbel and John Edwards
Daily Mail
Last updated at 11:11 PM on 15th July 2011

Aston Villa have moved ahead of Chelsea in the battle for Scott Parker after
West Ham decided they would rather the midfielder leave permanently. The
Midlands club tabled a £7million bid for the England midfielder and will
offer Parker £65,000-per-week plus an extra £5,000 appearance bonus to join.
And now Chelsea are considering shock moves for Nigel Reo-Coker and Jermaine
Jenas after their plan to land Parker on a season-long loan suffered a
serious blow.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan claimed earlier this week that the Hammers
would prefer to loan Parker. But there has since been a change of heart at
boardroom level and the Upton Park club would now prefer to cash-in on
Parker - who is valued at £8million. Chelsea want Parker on loan until the
end of the forthcoming season as they look for a short-term replacement for
Michael Essien, who will miss up to six months with a serious knee injury.
But the Blues are not as keen on signing Parker on a permanent basis and
Villa overtook them in the queue to land Parker following their tabled
offer.

And Sportsmail understands that Reo-Coker and Jenas will be considered by
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas if a move for Parker fails to materialise.
Both midfielders have been recommended to Villas-Boas by senior members of
the playing and coaching staff at Stamford Bridge. But the Portuguese is
understood to have been well aware of the duo's talents having watched them
on several occasions during his first spell at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho.
Premier League rules state all clubs must have at least eight 'homegrown'
players in their 25 man squads, a fact Villas-Boas is acutely aware of.

Reo-Coker or Jenas would help Chelsea increase their 'homegrown' quota, that
last season only included John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Ross
Turnbull.
Due to the lack of English-produced players, Carlo Ancelotti could not even
fill his 25-man allowance - naming just 19 senior professionals. And moves
for Reo-Coker and Jenas would represent a cost-effective way of filling that
'homegrown' quota next season. Reo-Coker, 27, is available on a free
transfer after leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season. And
Villas-Boas recognises Reo-Coker represents a minimal financial risk in his
efforts to land a player who could step straight into Essien's shoes. Prior
to their decision to sell rather than loan Parker, West Ham wanted a
£4.5million loan fee and insist Chelsea take on his £80,000-per-week wages.
Reo-Coker earned £35,000-per-week at Villa Park and would not command a
transfer fee given he is a free-agent. Bolton and Queens Park Rangers have
also shown an interest in Reo-Coker - clubs that are likely to offer him
guaranteed first-team football. But the chance of establishing himself at a
top-four club would be hard to resist for Reo-Coker - who was once on the
brink of an England call-up under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Meanwhile, Villas-Boas is understood to have been an influential figure in
Jose Mourinho's decision to move for Jenas in 2009, when the pair worked
together at Inter Milan. Chelsea's interest in Jenas could further
antagonise an already delicate relationship with Tottenham over the West
Londoners' pursuit of Luka Modric. The Portuguese wants someone who can hit
the ground running, hence his preference for a midfielder with top-flight
experience. Chelsea signed England Under-21 pair Josh McEachran and Ryan
Bertrand to long-term contracts - further underlining Villas-Boas'
commitment to increasing the club's 'homegrown' contingent.
And McEachran - who now earns £25,000-per-week - wants a crack at taking
Essien's place in the team. The 18-year-old told Chelsea TV: 'I feel really
sorry for Michael because he's had a lot of injuries before but hopefully it
will give me a chance to prove myself to Andre.' In addition to his move
for Parker, Villa manager Alex McLeish tabled a £9million move for winger
Charles N'Zogbia, which has been accepted by Wigan. Goalkeeper Shay Given,
meanwhile was at Villa's training ground yesterday to talk terms over a move
from Manchester City.

West Ham deny Chelsea bid for Parker as Spurs pull out of the running
Nathaniel John and Ben Pearce
Wednesday, July 13, 2011
1:11 PM

West Ham have revealed that the club is yet to receive an offer for their
star midfielder Scott Parker. Last season's Football Writers' Player of the
Year, who turns 31 in October, is thought to be attracting interest from a
host of clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and most recently
Chelsea. However, contrary to reports elsewhere, the club have confirmed
that there have been no approaches made for the player. "We've had no
approach from any clubs officially," David Sullivan told Sky Sports News.
"We keep hearing rumours and I'd be wrong to comment further. "We'd love a
deal, and this has been mooted, that we'll loan him out for the season for a
substantial fee and when we get promotion he comes back to us. "That sort of
deal would appeal to us because we love Scot. We're not desperate for
anything. You know we'd obviously love a loan fee. He has substantial value
and has three or four years left of his career."

With Chelsea's Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien ruled out for at least six
months following a knee operation, it was suggested that new Blues manager
Andre Villas-Boas was interested in taking Parker to Stamford Bridge on loan
for the season. Tottenham are another club who have been linked but it seems
that interest has cooled. While Spurs have previously been interested in
Scott Parker, London24 understands that Tottenham have abandoned their chase
for West Ham's talisman, and will not be bidding for the 30-year-old. Parker
has been training with the West Ham squad on their pre-season tour in
Switzerland, although it is thought that tonight's game against FC Basel
will come too early for the midfielder to feature. Hammers boss Sam
Allardyce revealed that he has held talks with Parker and his England
colleagues Robert Green and Carlton Cole and is hopeful that at least one of
the trio will stay at the club. "We sat down and chatted and they said they
were happy to do their pre-season training with us and see what happened,"
he said. "If the right sort of bid comes in for a player then we would have
to look at it and we would certainly keep the player aware of what is going
on. "I am hopeful that they won't all be leaving."

Cole prepared to stay with West Ham

West Ham striker Carlton Cole has not asked for a transfer and remains a key
part of their first-team plans for next season. Cole looked set to join
Stoke for £6m but the move fell through after he failed to agree personal
terms. The England striker is happy to stay with the Championship side and
play under Sam Allardyce if the club do not receive a fair price for his
signature. Cole has been accused of having injury problems, but he played 43
games last season and the club are convinced he can still play a major role
for them. A club statement said: "Carlton has not asked for a transfer and
has remained committed to the club at all times. "In being given permission
to talk to Stoke, the negotiations did not break down as a result of him
asking for too much money. He was discussing wage parity with other key
players and was well within his right to do so. "Further there is no issue
in terms of his reported "injury problems". An England striker, he played 43
games last season. In fact he has averaged 36 matches a year in the last
four campaigns at West Ham United. "Carlton remains part of the West Ham
United first-team squad under Sam Allardyce."

Super Kev can be West Ham's Captain Fantastic
West Ham: Kevin Nolan is proud to wear the shirt – and the armband
By Will Haine July 15, 2011
GiveMeFootball.com

With West Ham bosses declaring an interest in loaning out Scott Parker for a
year, the contribution of Kevin Nolan to the Hammers' cause will take on an
even greater significance next season. Sam Allardyce pulled off arguably
the transfer coup of the summer by persuading Nolan to relinquish the
Newcastle captaincy and drop down a division, with the 28-year-old now set
to lead the charge back to the Barclays Premier League. Nolan is with
currently with his new teammates at a training camp in Switzerland, where
Allardyce is running the rule over his new charges, and was given his West
Ham debut against FC Basel on Wednesday.

The former Bolton midfielder played 45 minutes in a 2-1 loss, and was handed
the skipper's armband - a position that is there for the taking after
Matthew Upson left the Boleyn Ground at the end of last season. And, after
wearing the famous claret and blue for the first time, Nolan was honoured
and proud to make his West Ham bow. "I was very proud to pull on the shirt,"
he told West Ham TV. "I was delighted and to be made captain was a nice
little touch, too, and I was happy to get through my first 45 minutes. "I
think it showed that at the end of the week, we were a little bit tired.
This is the last game here and I think it showed a little bit in our
performance. Some of the lads were a bit lethargic. "To be fair, it was my
first game in eight or nine weeks, so I'm delighted to have got through it
with no injuries. Hopefully I can push on now and get more games under the
belt and it's the first step to getting ready for Cardiff."
