Avram Grant has backed his players to show their fighting spirit once again
after a hugely disappointing evening at Newcastle United. More than 700
travelling fans made the trip to the north-east on a chilly Wednesday night,
only for them to see the Hammers outclassed from start to finish in a 5-0
defeat. The manager made no excuses for a display where "everything went
wrong" but called on his men to remember the form shown in four previous
matches unbeaten. "We are not happy with the performance and not happy with
the result," he said. "But we did well before now and we will get back to
that. "It is difficult to explain what happened. It was a bad day at the
office. Of course, we are disappointed to be back at the bottom but all that
matters is where we will be at the end of the season. Our points situation
has improved with the teams around us and we have to remember the form in
the previous four matches."

Grant was certain he would see a positive reaction from his team, who now
have an FA Cup third-round tie with Barnsley and then a huge Carling Cup
semi-final first leg with Birmingham City to contemplate before resuming
top-flight action a week on Saturday against Arsenal. "We are confident in
ourselves because we know the football we are capable of playing and that we
can take points. We did well in difficult games recently away to Blackburn
Rovers and Fulham and you can see this week how good those results were. "I
am sure we will get back to that form quickly. We will stay positive. We
know not to judge things on one performance. We have bounced back before
after difficult results and this will be the case. I don't like how we
played but we know this can happen. Sunderland lost 6-0 at Newcastle and
after that came back strong. "It is frustrating because we had a good
Christmas and New Year period but this is football. Everything we did went
wrong and everything they did came off. We didn't play like we had before
when we put pressure on the opponents and passed the ball well."

Without doubt the only Hammers performance really worthy of note on the
night was that from the travelling support. Grant rightly said they deserved
full respect. "I am sorry for the supporters, especially when so many came a
long way. I am disappointed for them to see that performance after what we
had given them in the previous two games."

Captain Matthew Upson has apologised to supporters after the 5-0 defeat at
Newcastle United

Matthew Upson has issued an apology on behalf of the team to the club's
supporters following the 5-0 Barclays Premier League defeat at Newcastle
United. The West Ham United captain admitted the Hammers had been a distant
second-best at St James' Park and said 'Sorry' to each and every fan who
made the long round-trip to the North East on Wednesday evening. The skipper
insisted that he and his team-mates would not dwell on the heavy defeat and
would do everything possible to bounce back to winning ways when Barnsley
visit the Boleyn Ground in the FA Cup on Saturday. "I can only apologise for
the display. Again, it was a fantastic effort from the supporters who came
to watch and we didn't do them justice and that's a shame. We need to
improve and keep them coming away from home. "They've been great all season
and we will be back on it in the next game."

Upson was at a loss to explain the Tyneside debacle, admitting that
everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong, while everything the
Magpies touched turned to goals. Leon Best bagged a hat-trick on his Premier
League debut for the club, while Kevin Nolan and Peter Lovenkrands were also
on target as Newcastle ran riot. "It's very difficult to sum it up after
such a heavy defeat. We're obviously very disappointed and need to re-group
and get ourselves together after a good run. "I think we have put a lot of
our efforts into our last four games and had some good results so perhaps
this was one step too far for us because we were really poor. "You need to
look at it, pick pieces out of it and scrap it. That's the best way to move
forward. You can't dwell on it or over-analyse it so we'll do that and get
back to what I would call normal. "It was just a poor performance - a poor
individual performance and a poor collective performance and just a poor
performance from everybody associated with the team. We just have to move
on."

West Ham's defeat, combined with a draw for Wigan Athletic at Bolton
Wanderers and Wolverhampton Wanderers' shock win over Chelsea, sent them
back to the bottom of the table. With ten days until Avram Grant's side
resume their battle to beat relegation with the visit of Arsenal to the
Boleyn Ground, Upson said it was up to the Hammers alone to save their
Premier League skins. "Results have gone poorly but it's all about us and
the points we accumulate. We can't worry about anyone else."

January promises to be a busy month off the field - as well as on it - for
the Hammers

West Ham United Chairman David Sullivan has updated supporters on the
efforts being made to strengthen the Hammers squad this month. With the team
going well on a four-match unbeaten run in the Barclays Premier League and
contemplating a Carling Cup semi-final next week, the Board are working
behind the scenes to sign new players. Although different names are being
linked every single day, the club will not confirm until moves are official.
Mr Sullivan said: "We will bring in two or three players whatever happens
and have had a few meetings already. As I say, watch this space but the
squad and the players we have now have also shown that they are good enough.
"We can never sit still, though, and this goes for all areas of the club. We
have to be mindful that you can only register 25 players and we already have
a squad of 30 players."

Academy reaching out

The West Ham United Academy has teamed up with Technical Soccer Coaching to
train local youngsters

West Ham United have teamed up with Technical Soccer Coaching (TSC) to
provide innovative training to youngsters from across south Essex and east
London. The partnership will see Hammers Academy coaching staff running
sessions at a host of venues, with young players of all ages and both sexes
being taught the importance of individual technique and small group skills.
Backed by Academy Director Tony Carr and Deputy Academy Director Paul
Heffer, West Ham's coaches will be joined by TSC staff in running sessions
at Caterham High School in Ilford, Campion School in Hornchurch and the
Robert Clack Leisure Centre in Dagenham. TSC plan to open new venues in
Enfield, Southend, Colchester, Bishops Stortford and Kent in 2011.

Carr himself has endorsed the Technical Soccer Coaching approach, saying:
"Good technique is the foundation of all the work we do at the West Ham
United Academy and one of the teaching methods we employ is the excellent
Technical Soccer Coaching programme. "It is comprehensive and covers all the
aspects of technical training. 'Our teams enjoy it and it helps to develop
technical, confident and creative footballers'."

TSC's coaching philosophy is already teaching 150 children the fundamentals
of technique, with a small number having already graduated to train
full-time at the West Ham United Academy. TSC coaching is centred around the
Circle of Technical Development, which concentrates on six key areas.
According to age and ability, each of the six parts combines a variety of
drills, skills and training games used by Academies and Centres of
Excellence across the world. All the exercises can be adapted for coaches
who are planning their own sessions and also by players practicing
individually. The six areas are ball manipulation and first touch, speed and
mobility, receiving, passing decision-making, attacking and defending
techniques, goal-scoring and finishing and group-combination play.

Academy coach and TSC Technical Director Ian Yuill said he and his staff
were committed to teaching children good technique from a young age.
"The Technical Soccer Coaching philosophy is that football is only 11v11 in
the tunnel and that out on the pitch the game is a constantly changing
sequence of play between two, three and sometimes four players," he said.
"Team systems and gameplay are important however they are only as good as
the individual players involved in them. For too long, poor control or
inaccurate passing and shooting has been masked by the importance of
'winning at all costs' rather than on the fundamentals of player
development. "We believe that individual technique and small group skills in
attack and defence are vital and ultimately determine a team's success.
"Technical Soccer Coaching therefore focuses on individual skill development
and small-sided team play."

Newcastle's Best was a strong presence in attack

Leon Best hit a hat-trick on his first Premier League start for Newcastle to
help the Magpies crush West Ham. Best slotted in his first competitive goal
for the home side on 18 minutes before knocking in Peter Lovenkrands's pass
at the far post. Kevin Nolan side-footed in the third from 10 yards and his
ball led to Best's third, which was blasted in. Lovenkrands made it a
miserable night for the Hammers when he poked home Joey Barton's cross at
the near post. Former Coventry striker Best deserved his name in lights
after his three-goal haul, but Barton was the star of the show. Barton, who
joined the Magpies in 2007, is enjoying his finest season in a Newcastle
shirt and produced a brilliant all-round midfield display against the
Hammers. The 28-year-old not only hassled the visitors' midfield but also
delivered pinpoint balls with alarming accuracy as far as the east Londoners
were concerned. Before his opener, Best twice had chances to put a mark on
his Newcastle tally thanks to Barton's deliveries. His first cross was cut
out by James Tomkins as Best was about to make the contact and the second
whipped-in ball was headed wide by the striker from 10 yards. Best had come
on as a substitute in the 1-0 win at Wigan last weekend and wasted a
goalscoring opportunity after stumbling as he was about to shoot, so many of
the fans in black and white could have been forgiven for thinking that
perhaps the burly forward was destined not to break his duck.

But he relieved his and the St James' Park faithful's anxiety with a
delicate finish in the 18th minute and then repeated the feat six minutes
from half-time.
Barton played an important role in both strikes, finding the front two with
raking past from just beyond the Newcastle area before feeding in
Lovenkrands with a quick free-kick who in turn found his strike partner.
With the former Manchester City man pulling the strings, regular playmaker
Nolan could afford to have a relatively quiet game. But in the final minute
of the first half he sparked into life when he stroked Tomkins' awful
clearance through a crowd of players and past Hammers goalkeeper Robert
Green. West Ham's painful night in the North East continued after the break
when Best grabbed his third.
On this occasion it was Nolan's deft flick that fooled West Ham's sleepy
defenders Danny Gabbidon and Tomkins. The ball found its way to Best, who
smashed in with confidence from the edge of the area.

Newcastle's fifth was poked in at the near post by sharp-thinking
Lovenkrands thanks again to Barton who played in another teasing ball from
the right.
Nile Ranger should have added a sixth but somehow sent his shot three yards
right of Green's upright. Woeful is an inadequate word to describe their
opponents' performance. Newcastle keeper Harper was only called to make one
save in the opening 45 minutes when he palmed away former Magpie Scott
Parker's swerving shot. West Ham's other chances fell to Carlton Cole, who
after being virtually anonymous became a little more animated with his side
5-0 down. His first effort was an overhead kick that fell straight to Harper
and the second a fierce strike saved again by the home side's number one.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew's side deserved their clean sheet but it will
probably the easiest they have earned all season. And the future of Hammers
manager Avram Grant will again be thrown into doubt following a performance
that left his side his side back at the bottom of the Premier League.

West Ham manager Avram Grant labelled his side's 5-0 defeat at Newcastle as
a "bad day at the office". The result sees the Hammers, who were 3-0 down at
half-time, pushed back to the bottom of the table. "Everything we tried to
do didn't go well and the physical side and quality wasn't there," Grant
admitted. "We were in it at the beginning then gave away sloppy goals. These
results can happen sometimes. You can have bad days in the office."
West Ham had revived their fortunes, picking up seven points from three
games, but they rarely caused the rampant Magpies concern at St James' Park.
"At 3-0 we tried to do something, but they then made it 4-0 and it wasn't
easy," added Grant.

The Hammers now face two cup games, an FA Cup tie against Barnsley on
Saturday followed by a Carling Cup semi-final first leg match at home to
Birmingham three days later. Grant said he would have enjoyed the prospect
of those matches had his side not been depleted by injuries, with Kieron
Dyer, Herita Ilunga, Benni McCarthy, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Jack Collison and
Manuel da Costa currently missing from the squad. "We're a little bit short
and there is pressure going into the cup games," said the Israeli.
Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew sang the praises of his side's
hat-trick hero Leon Best and midfielder Joey Barton, who he believes
deserves an international call-up. Best made his first league start for the
Magpies, replacing the injured Shola Ameobi who joined star striker Andy
Carroll on the sidelines.

"Leon has been banging on my door to play and I knew he would have a chance
during this busy period. He kept his focus on wanting to play and there was
hunger in his eyes," said Pardew, who was facing a team he managed for three
years. "But he was the beneficiary of our midfield's good play, particularly
Barton's. "His midfield display was good as I've ever seen. And from what
I've witnessed of his performances since I've joined the club, I think he
deserves an England call-up. "He's had a temperament problem in the past but
I haven't seen that since I've been here."

Matthew Upson has apologised on behalf of the team following West Ham's
humiliating 5-0 defeat at St James' Park tonight. The current club captain,
who has refused to sign a contract extension and is set to leave United this
summer when his current deal expires called the defeat a 'poor performance'
- whilst offering an apology to every fan that made the long journey to the
north east. "I can only apologise for the display," he said via whufc.com.
"Again, it was a fantastic effort from the supporters who came to watch and
we didn't do them justice and that's a shame. "We need to improve and keep
them coming away from home. They've been great all season and we will be
back on it in the next game. Reflecting on the game itself, Upson mused:

Was the productive Christmas period merely a false dawn? West Ham returned
to their bad old ways with a good old-fashioned hammering at St James Park
tonight.

Seven points from a possible nine over the Christmas period offered hope
that the much-criticised Avram Grant had finally found the solution to a
season of dispair as he led his side to vital wins against fellow relegation
candidates Fulham and Wolves.

However all that good work was undone tonight as the Hammers capitulated
against a side who were playing Championship football last season - and a
side currently managed by a character last seen working in League One.

Since being forced out of West Ham by Eggert Magnusson in December 2006,
Alan Pardew has pursued a somewhat less-than-illustrious career having been
booted out of both Charlton and Southampton. Yet once again tonight he came
up trumps against his former employers, as he did when his then-Charlton
side beat Alan Curbishley's Hammers back in 2007 (even if we had the last
laugh that season).

Although Pardew will no doubt receive plaudits for masterminding the win
that leaves West Ham bottom of the Premier League, again, it is in no doubt
that the Hammers were the architects of their own downfall. A defence at
sixes and sevens was protected by a midfield lacking cohesion and energy. As
for a front line that failed to fashion more than one or two meaningful
half-chances, the less said the better.

A fairly even opening gave no indication of the horror that was to follow;
Tiote and Parker both saw decent efforts come to nothing as the two sides
traded blows. However once the recalled Leon Best - standing in for regular
striker Andy Carroll - put the Magpies ahead on 18 minutes the Hammers were
never in the game.

Best's first goal of a fruitful evening emanated from an awful pass from
Frederic Piquionne whilst West Ham were attacking, with the loose ball
picked up and quickly turned into a counter attack. The move was finished by
the former Coventry man who was left with just Rob Green to beat after being
put through on goal.

Six minutes ahead of the break Newcastle doubled their lead with Best
grabbing his second of the night after the West Ham defence fell asleep,
failing to pick up Jonas Gutierrez wide on the left from a free kick. The
Argentinian's cross from the byeline was bundled home at the far post by
Best, with Hammers defenders still scrambling back.

Worse was to follow ahead for Grant's side on the stroke of half time when
Kevin Nolan made it 3-0 after further inept defending allowed the Newcastle
captain to turn the ball home from close range. James Tomkins, so strong in
recent weeks was the guilty party on this occasion; the young centre half
gifting the ball to the opposition inside the penalty box after failing to
clear his lines.

With the most disappointing performers, Radoslav Kovac and Piquionne
replaced by Behrami and Obinna at the break, West Ham set out with some
purpose at the beginning of the second half making several forays into
opposition territory. But as was the story of the night, the end product was
always poor.

Not so for the home side - who have already put six past Aston Villa and
five past bitter rivals Sunderland at St James' Park this season - or young
Best, making his first Premier League start of the season - one in which he
secured the match ball with a third goal on the hour mark.

Although West Ham may feel that Best was offside, the lack of cohesion
between the back four as they attempted to play what appeared to be some
sort of rudimentary offside trap was cruelly exposed as the youngster strode
through before finishing finely to grab his hat-trick.

As if West Ham's misery wasn't severe enough, Newcastle decided to pour salt
into the would by adding a fifth just three minutes later as once again,
West Ham's defence resembled a collection of Sunday league hangover victims.
Joey Barton, who had an excellent night sent a low cross into the near post
where Matthew Upson was beaten far too easily to the ball by a
less-than-prolific Peter Lovenkrands.

Ten minutes later Nile Ranger missed one easier than any of the five chances
taken when he somehow managed to sidefoot an effort wide from six yards out
with West Ham's defence nowhere to be seen. Had he hit the target the score
would have replicated West Ham's 6-0 defeat at Reading three years ago this
very week - coincidentally of course, another of Pardew's former clubs.

It took Alan Curbishley's team of 2006/07 more than two months to fully
recover from that particular defeat, which came when Curbishley's team had
played the same number of games as Grant's current side (22) with two points
less (18 to the current team's 20).

38 points was the minimum requirement to survive that season and with the
teams at the bottom all picking up points in recent weeks - including
Wolves, who beat Chelsea 1-0 tonight to rise above the Hammers - it is
likely that a similar tally will be required this term.

WIth only four league wins under his belt, it is hard to see at present how
and where Avram Grant can conjure up the necessary five or six wins from the
remaining 16 matches. Despite their public backing of Grant, this cannot
have gone unnoticed by Messrs Sullivan and Gold who are nearing the end of a
torrid first year at the Boleyn Ground.

The two Daves have the opportunity to address the latest problems to some
degree with a financial injection into the playing squad during the transfer
window. Whether or not they'll swallow their pride and bow to popular
opinion by replacing Grant along with that remains to be seen.

West Ham manager Avram Grant was at a loss to explain his side's 5-0
drubbing at Newcastle. The Hammers boosted their survival hopes with a
four-match unbeaten run leading up to Wednesday's trip to St James' Park.
But that run came crashing to a halt with a woeful performance on Tyneside
that saw them slip back to the bottom of the Premier League table. Leon Best
marked his first Premier League start for Newcastle with a hat-trick,
opening the scoring after 18 minutes. He scored his second in the 39th
minute before Kevin Nolan punished more poor defending on the stroke of
half-time to leave the visitors reeling. Best was then left unmarked to
complete his hat-trick on the hour mark and Peter Lovenkrands scored
Newcastle's fifth just three minutes later. "I can't explain it because in
the last few games we played we were very good in every aspect of football,"
Grant told Sky Sports.

Bad day

"Sometimes you have a bad day at the office, like when Sunderland came here
(5-1). Everything that Newcastle did went well and everything that we tried
didn't go well. "We are not happy about what happened today because in the
last game we played well. "We did everything that we needed. But today we
came here and we not in form. "I don't know why. Maybe it was because we've
had a lot of games in a short time but so have Newcastle. I can't explain it
now." A shock 1-0 victory over Chelsea saw Wolves climb out of the bottom
three while Wigan's 1-1 draw at Bolton also saw them go above West Ham.
However, Grant remains confident of beating the drop as the Hammers are just
one point adrift of safety. "I said before the game we'd battle until the
end of the season and we'll continue to battle because we know we can still
do it," he added.

impress with aplomb but he was run close by Joey Barton, who was a constant

hour mark and he fired home to complete his hat-trick.

Save of the match: Steve Harper pulled off a point-blank save late on to
deny Carlton Cole and maintain Newcastle's clean sheet.

Moment of the match: Best getting a standing ovation as he was brought off
shortly after completing his hat-trick.

Talking points: How well can do Newcastle do this season if Alan Pardew
keeps masterminding attacking performances like this? Is Best set to partner
Andy Carroll on his return? Is Avram Grant the man to keep West Ham up? And
can he do it with this set of players?

Leon Best scored a hat-trick on his first Premier League start for Newcastle
as the Magpies hammered West Ham 5-0. With top scorer Andy Carroll and Shola
Ameobi both injured, Alan Pardew gave Best a rare chance to impress, and the
former Coventry striker took full advantage. Best bagged a first-half brace
before Kevin Nolan pounced on the stroke of half-time to leave the Hammers
reeling. Best then completed his hat-trick on the hour mark before strike
partner Peter Lovenkrandspiled on the misery for Avram Grant's men by
scoring Newcastle's fifth just three minutes later. The Hammers had climbed
out of the relegation zone during a four-match unbeaten run but they have
now slipped back to the bottom of the Premier League table, with a woeful
performance putting Grant back under pressure. It was the third time this
season Newcastle had scored five or more at St James' Park, and substitute
Nile Ranger passed up a glorious opportunity to match the six they managed
against Aston Villa back in August.

Miserable run

Best was making just his second Premier League start after appearing for
Southampton in October 2004 and just his second this season after a
miserable run of injuries had hampered his progress on Tyneside. But he
needed just 18 minutes to justify his selection when he ran on to
Lovenkrands' ball over the top to thump a left-foot volley across Robert
Green and into the bottom corner. Former Magpie Scott Parker had earlier
tested Steve Harper with a swerving shot and he attempted to stamp his
authority on the midfield battle as the visitors looked for a way back into
the game. However, Cheik Tiote and Joey Barton recognised the danger and
started to close Parker down, and with Jonas Gutierrez and Jose Enrique
teaming up to terrorise the Hammers down their right, the home side were
threatening at regular intervals. They increased their lead six minutes
before the break when a quick-thinking Barton and Lovenkrands carved the
sleeping visitors open from a free-kick. Barton picked out the Dane's run
into space and when he slid the ball across goal, Best was again on hand to
fire home left-footed.

West Ham woe
West Ham's woes deepened markedly on the stroke of half-time when Gutierrez
once again found space down the left and sent in a low cross which James
Tomkins could only stab out to Nolan two yards inside the penalty area.
Nolan was a model of composure as, with Green desperately trying to recover
his ground, he sidefooted the ball firmly into the bottom corner for his
ninth of the season. Grant sent on Valon Behrami and Victor Obinna for
Radoslav Kovac and Frederic Piquionne at the break in a desperate attempt to
breathe new life into his team. But despite Parker's continuing industry
they were unable to create anything of note, and Newcastle killed off any
hope of a fightback with 30 minutes left when Nolan turned Enrique's pass
into Best's path and he beat the offside trap to finish with aplomb.
Lovenkrands added a fifth from a low cross by the excellent Barton and there
was still time for Ranger to fire horribly wide with the goal at his mercy
and the visitors in tatters.

Demba Ba has told skysports.com he is committed to sealing a dream move to
England. The Senegal star is currently AWOL from Hoffenheim as he seeks to
seal a deal with a Premier League club. He should currently be in La Manga
with the rest of the Hoffenheim squad as they are undertaking a winter
training camp. But Ba refused to travel to Spain and is now looking to seal
a move to England, with West Ham seemingly leading the race for his
signature.
"All I know is my ambition is to play in the Premier League," he told
skysports.com. "If there is an opportunity I should take it and the club
knows that."

However, Hoffenheim have been left outraged by Ba's behaviour and have again
condemned him for not travelling to La Manga. "Demba's behaviour will
definitely see us coming up with consequences," warned general manager Ernst
Tanner, speaking to Deutsche Presseagentur. "We cannot accept his doings
with regard to our club, our fans and his team-mates. That's a fact, he is
acting on his own authority at the moment. "We already had a situation with
him in the past, he was also wanting to leave by all available means then.
"The manner Demba Ba is wanting to do it for a second time now, the way he
is actually trying to pressurise his employer, is definitely unique in the
whole Bundesliga."

West Ham's board has yet to decide if Avram Grant will remain the club's
manager for Saturday's FA Cup game against Barnsley, according to Sky Sports
News sources. A senior figure at the club says the Hammers' hierarchy is
undecided about whether Wednesday night's 5-0 defeat at Newcastle will be
Grant's last game in charge. But it is believed the board has no plans to
hold an emergency board meeting on Thursday to discuss the manager's future.
Speculation surrounding Grant's position began to mount before Christmas
with the Hammers having spent all season in the drop zone. A four-match
unbeaten run during the festive programme boosted their hopes of survival,
temporarily lifting them out of the bottom three. But a woeful performance
on Tyneside, which saw the Hammers slip back to the bottom of the Premier
League, has put the Israeli coach's position back under scrutiny.

Hoffenheim striker Demba Ba has arrived in England as he looks to seal a
move to the Premier League. The Senegal international, who spent time with
Watford as a youngster, is looking to move to England. He was due to link-up
with his club Hoffenheim, who have travelled to La Manga in Spain for a
mid-season training camp. The German club confirmed he was AWOL and now Ba
has arrived in the English capital for talks with various interested
parties. "I dont know [what is happening], I am just keeping myself fit," Ba
told Sky Sports News. When asked if he was refusing to return to Hoffenheim,
he replied: "I would never do that."

Offers

West Ham have been leading the chase for his signature, amid claims they
wanted him on loan with a view to a £6million deal. However, reports suggest
that the likes of Tottenham, Fulham and Blackburn could be set to launch
counter offers. His agent Habib Sissoko admits they are hoping a deal will
be struck. "Hoffenheim have received offers from several clubs and now we
are waiting for final deal," he told Sky Sports News. "I think we are going
to sort it out in a few days. "It is not a secret, many clubs here want him.
I will talk more in a couple of days." Asked if West Ham were favourites, he
replied: "Demba loves West Ham."

AVRAM GRANT and West Ham look to be heading for divorce after they were torn
apart by the Best man. Toon striker Leon Best showed there is life beyond
Andy Carroll as he helped himself to a first hat-trick on a night to forget
for the hapless Hammers. When Newcastle win at home these days, they win big
- this was the third time they have bagged five or more in front of their
adoring fans this season. Boss Alan Pardew said: "Leon's been knocking at my
door saying he's not had an opportunity. He kept telling me he could do it
and he's proved himself. "He wasn't due to start but Shola Ameobi pulled out
and it was a brilliant night for him. "He has a good record in the
Championship but he's unproven at this level. "There is a snobbish opinion
that they're not really good enough coming from that level but he's proved
there are players who can live at this level if they have that belief."

Newcastle were three up and cruising at the interval as impressive Best hit
the goal trail for the first time in almost a year. After a glaring early
miss, all was forgiven on 18 minutes when he beat Robert Green with an
angled left-foot finish from six yards. It got even better for Best seven
minutes before the interval when he doubled his tally by turning home Peter
Lovenkrands' low centre at the far post. Kevin Nolan made sure of the three
points with a clinical 45th-minute effort after James Tomkins could only
half-clear a Jonas Gutierrez cross. There was no let up after the break and
Best sealed a richly-deserved treble on the hour, sauntering through a
gaping hole in the West Ham back line to sweep his shot past an exposed
Green. Just three minutes later it was five as Lovenkrands deservedly got in
on the act, reacting first to meet Joey Barton's low cross at the near post.
Carlton Cole forced two great late saves from Steve Harper but Newcastle sub
Nile Ranger should have made it six at the death, somehow shooting wide from
five yards. It meant Newcastle hardly missed injured 11-goal top scorer
Carroll, who Pardew insisted again is not for sale after fresh interest from
Spurs. The Toon boss added: "We've given the answer to anyone who has
contacted us that Andy's not for sale. "Harry Redknapp has not rung me
directly. "We had a conversation after the game there about some of his
squad that might be of interest to me. "He asked me how good Andy was and I
said he's not bad. I can't say strongly enough that Andy won't leave this
club in this window, 100 per cent."

Under-pressure Grant would love similar assurances from the Upton Park
board, but after this, he should not hold his breath.

midfielder, 28, will join Mick McCarthy's side on loan until the end of the
season. Sidwell had agreed personal terms and passed a medical with the
Hammers. But their failure to complete the deal saw Wolves move in and agree
to pay a £250,000 loan fee and £35,000 a week in wages. Sidwell has started
only 24 league games since a £5million switch from Chelsea in 2008 and is
out of contract in the summer.

Leon Best bagged a sensational hat-trick to send West Ham bottom, as Avram
Grant vowed to battle on despite this crushing defeat. Ireland striker Best
started the night as a surprise call-up by boss Alan Pardew, who handed the
forgotten man a rare chance. He ended it a hero, taking a standing ovation
from a delighted St James' Park crowd after the Geordies had run riot.
Best's goals were complimented by strikes from Kevin Nolan and Peter
Lovenkrands to inflict the Hammers' worst defeat of the season. Best joins
Andy Carroll and Nolan as Newcastle hat-trick heroes this season. Pardew
only called up Best, who had failed to score in his 51 weeks on Tyneside, at
10.30am, and admitted he had seen little in the man to merit his inclusion.
But Best silenced his critics in emphatic style, leaving West Ham boss Grant
facing an uncertain future despite a Christmas revival. Under-pressure Grant
savaged his players, and admitted he had "forgotten" to bring his so-called
lucky scarf . He said: "It is difficult to explain it. It was a bad day at
the office. In the last game we played well in every aspect. I don't know.
This division, we play so many games with a short squad, sometimes this
happens. "We do not want to be bottom, most important is where we are at the
end of the season. I am confident because of what we did before this game.
"I do not judge us on one game. This was a bad day but it is not something
that is usual for us. In the last month we don't play like this. We need to
continue that form. I don't like the game, the performance, how we play. "It
was not good, not the desire, not the effort, not the passing, not the
pressure. "I don't think this will effect our psychology. It was worse two
months ago. My job? I am not thinking about this. I forgot to bring my lucky
scarf. Seriously. But we didn't lose because of that."

Delighted Pardew said: "Joey Barton was outstanding - and Leon, who had
knocked on my door for two weeks telling me he has never had a chance.
"He has been here one year, got no assists, no goals, so I said: 'What is
there to keep about you?' He proved it tonight. He was not due to start. I
called him and he couldn't wait. Brilliant night, and he deserves it."
Pardew again confirmed the man Best replaced, injured Andy Carroll, would
"not be leaving this football club in this window - 100 per cent," despite
persistent interest from Spurs. He added: "We have given the answer to
anyone who contacted us, that he is not for sale." He added of Best: "Like
all strikers from the Championship, there is a snobbish opinion that they
are not good enough, but they can be if they get belief."

Best was regarded as a £1million panic buy from Coventry last January in the
boardroom and terraces - one of the mistakes that was held against Pardew's
predecessor Chris Hughton. His first goal came after 17 minutes, volleying
home left-footed from 12 yards. The second came after 38 minutes, when a
cheeky free-kick was slid down the left for Lovenkrands to exploit. His
cross allowed Best to swivel and shoot past Robert Green. Nolan then curled
one in beautifully from the edge of the box after a Jonas Gutierrez cross
was half cleared. Best's third was again a clinical finish. Barton played a
positive ball up to Nolan, whose first-time layoff sent Best clear. He cut
inside and fired left-footed over Green. Newcastle weren't finished. As
Grant glowered on the touchline at the horror show unfolding before him, the
Geordies went five up after 63 minutes. Once again the brilliant Barton was
the inspiration, crossing to the near post for Lovenkrands to drill home his
third of the season.

Fiorentina have made a £4million move for West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami.
Behrami's move to Fiorentina's Serie A rivals Roma stalled because the
Italians' bankers told them to cut their wage bill. That in turn has held up
Steve Sidwell's move from Aston Villa to West Ham, but Fiorentina's
intervention could now help speed up his arrival at Upton Park.

Hoffenheim general manager Ernst Tanner has told want-away striker Demba Ba
to forget about a transfer this month and warned him he can expect to spend
the next six months without a club. Ba refused to travel with the Bundesliga
club to their winter training camp in Spain amid interest from Premier
League club West Ham. Hoffenheim are reported to have turned down an offer
from the Hammers and the player has since gone on strike. Tanner claims the
striker will now have to face the consequences of his actions, but he will
not be allowed to leave. "I have told him to expect legal action," Tanner
said on his club website. "He will be fined and have his contract
terminated, but he will not be able to play for any other club. "We have
already had this situation with Demba Ba wanting to get away at all costs.
The way the player has tried for a second time to put pressure on his
employers must be a first in the Bundesliga." Ba said he would never play
for Hoffenheim again after receiving an approach from Stuttgart in 2009.
However, he was ordered fulfil his contract in Hoffenheim and eventually
accepted that he would not be going nowhere. "Demba's behaviour will
certainly have consequences," added Tanner. "This approach to his employers,
but also to his team-mates cannot be tolerated." Ba has refused to return to
the club following the winter break and is likely to face a hefty fine from
the club.

For Alan Pardew, it was the Best of times. For Avram Grant, it was the
worst. Four years and a month since Pardew's services were deemed surplus to
requirements at Upton Park, Newcastle's newish manager enjoyed a liberal
slice of vengeance at the expense of his one-time employers. It was served
up, on a chilly Tyneside night, courtesy of three goals from his
third-choice centre-forward.

Leon Best has been hampered by injury since his £1m move from Coventry 12
months ago but after six fruitless starts last season and a substitute
appearance at Wigan this season, the Republic of Ireland international
shattered his scoring duck for the Magpies with a hat-trick after being
picked by Pardew as a stand-in for the incapacitated Andy Carroll's
hamstrung stand-in, Shola Ameobi.

There were also goals from Kevin Nolan and Peter Lovenkrands as the West Ham
revival bubble was unceremoniously pricked. After their festive-time run of
four matches without defeat, the Hammers now find themselves back at the
bottom of the league.

Grant cut a disconsolate figure as he watched the capitulation from
pitch-side – minus his lucky claret and blue scarf. "I forgot to bring it,"
the West Ham manager explained afterwards. "But it was not because of this
that we lost. It's difficult to explain it. It was a bad day at the office."

West Ham were woeful from the start. Best might have scored two goals in the
opening four minutes had he made the most of silver-platter service from the
right wing by Joey Barton, who produced another display of England class.
Scott Parker tested Steve Harper with a swerving drive but it was virtually
one-way traffic all night.

The breakthrough came in the 18th minute, Best playing the ball to
Lovenkrands on the right before racing into the box and beating Rob Green
with a left-foot finish from six yards.

The second goal, six minutes before half-time, was a subtle variation on the
Barton free-kick theme. With the West Ham defence expecting the kind of
hoisted effort from which Carroll (whom Pardew insisted afterwards would not
be leaving in the transfer window) has greatly prospered this season, the
sometime England midfielder rolled a low pass to Lovenkrands on the left and
the Dane pulled the ball across the goalmouth for Best to bury another
first-time shot.

That was bad enough for the visitors but the real Hammer blow came in the
final minute of the first half. A cross from the left by Jonas Gutierrez was
diverted to Nolan and the captain side-footed the ball home from 15 yards.

On the hour Barton and Nolan combined to tee up Best for his hat-trick. Four
minutes later came the final insult for Grant's shambolic side, Barton
despatching a right-wing cross and Lovenkrands turning the ball home at the
near post.

West Ham boss Avram Grant is set to be axed in the what could be the first
of a string of Barclays Premier League sackings. Sportsmail understands
Hammers chiefs are close to pulling the trigger after the humiliating 5-0
defeat at Newcastle on Wednesday night. Grant is not the only manager in
serious danger of losing his job. Liverpool's Roy Hodgson, Aston Villa's
Gerard Houllier and Chelsea's Carlo Ancelotti are all fearing the worst
after poor losses.
Despite a recent mini-revival prior to the St James' Park mauling, Grant now
finds his side back on the bottom of the table and facing an uphill battle
to stay in the top-flight. West Ham co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold
will now decide whether it's time to boot out the man they handed a
four-year contract to only last summer. Next up for West Ham is an FA Cup
tie at home to Barnsley on Saturday but Sullivan and Gold could dump Grant
before then. A hat-trick from Leon Best - plus goals from Kevin Nolan and
Peter Lovenkrands - inflicted a devastating defeat on the lowly Hammers to
send them spiralling back down to the foot of the table. The Israeli
insisted: 'We were in a worse position one month ago. It's where we are at
the end of the season that matters.'
Grant was not the only boss to suffer on Wednesday night. Liverpool manager
Roy Hodgson is now clinging to his job after losing 3-1 to Blackburn at
Ewood Park. Hodgson said later: 'My job? I'm not prepared to talk about
that, I am depressed enough about the performance.' Asked about his
feelings after the defeat Hodgson said: 'Dejection, bitter disappointment,
frustration. I am very disappointed for the fans who gave us good support
and saw the team concede the goals we did. 'I thought in the second half we
did well to retrieve a seemingly hopeless situation and get back on track
and had Steven's penalty gone in who knows, we may have made the last five
minutes more exciting. 'Unfortunately when you are Liverpool and you lose
away to Blackburn there is nothing that can be said which will put a
positive slant or make the situation look any brighter. 'As far as I am
concerned it is a really bad day and there is not much more I can say other
than, to the fans, that anything they are feeling tonight I can assure them
the feeling is equally as bad and equally as depressed in the dressing
room.'

Defending champions Chelsea suffered another big blow to their hopes of
retaining the title when they were beaten 1-0 by Wolves, who started the
night bottom of the league. But Ancelotti insists he remains the right man
to lead Chelsea out of their current slump. He said: 'I don't fear (for my
job). I'm worried because the team doesn't reach the result. I think it's
obvious we are not good enough in this moment. 'But the team has the skill,
the ability, the character, the personality to move on. It's important to
stay compact, to stay together and to work hard for each other.'

Houllier is also facing increasing scrutiny after Villa dropped into the
relegation zone after losing 1-0 at home to Sunderland. Phil Bardsley
scored his first top flight goal to leave the Holte End chanting towards
Houllier 'you're getting sacked in the morning'. Yet, Houllier insists he
retains the support of owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner
despite his woeful start at Villa Park. He said: 'I know about the chants.
I heard that. It hurts but I understand their frustration. They were
fantastic at the end and the players can't complain about the fans. 'Every
time we were under the cosh, or every time we had to come back into the
game, they were pushing and supporting the team. What is important is that
you have the backing of the chairman and the chief executive. 'I spoke to
Paul Faulkner and he was extremely supportive. I understand it is not easy
for them. I don't doubt Randy Lerner's firm support and determination. We
are in this together for better or worse. At the moment, we are going
through the worse.'

"A source at West Ham says that they don't know if he will be in charge for
the FA Cup game on Saturday."

We can but hope.

I was presenting my show on LBC last night and could hardly believe what my
producer kept telling me. 1-0. 2-0. 3-0. 4-0. 5-0. At one point I think he
was taking the ****, but sadly not. How I kept myself together while hosting
a phone in on homeopathy is anyone's guess. I haven't seen any of the game
so maybe I am not in a position to comment, but that score doesn't lie, nor
does the apparent abject performance of the whole team. It is hardly
believable that having gone up to 15th that we are now bottom again.

So who to blame? The simple answer is everyone – the players and the
manager. Why on earth did Grant change the formation back to a 4-5-1 with
Freddie Piquionne in midfield, which is, I gather, what happened? People
have been very unfair blaming it all on Mark Noble. Rubbish. Mark Noble is a
central midfielder. If you play him on the left of a midfield five you're
not going to get the best out of him. He has also put himself on the line
for the team, twice coming back from injury way ahead of when he should
have. We should be praising him, not hurling insults, as some idiots have
done in the previous comments thread.

The fact is that the Christmas period results disguised what were actually
four or five average performances. In two of the games we got lucky, for
once.

Difficult decisions have to be made at Upton Park in the next few days. They
cannot be put off for any longer.

What are the owners' options now?

When Messrs Sullivan and Gold wake this morning, it won't be long before the
reality of last night comes like an express train to shock them into full
consciousness.

They may take some comfort from the meagre two points that separate 14th
from bottom of the table. But they will also ask whether the 5-0 scoreline
is merely a royal blip in a season of blips or whether they are facing a
deeper cancer that demands emergency surgery.

The congestion in the lower half of the table does offer consolation,
because as we've seen in the last few days one result can bring a major
change in position. But it is only consolation if it does not hide greater
threats, such as a terminal decline in players' confidence.

The most obvious action, as this forum is not slow to observe, is to change
the manager. To do that, they will have to be very sure that Avram Grant is
the major reason for the present plight, and that they will be able to bring
in someone who has a significantly better chance of keeping the club up. The
compensation payable will probably also reduce the money available for new
players.

In Grant's defence, he inherited a squad that was already low on confidence
after last season, and has lost Hitzlsberger, the summer's major signing and
possibly a potent playmaker with Parker.

Arguments for change include inconsistent performances, poor formations and
an apparent inability to raise the players' motivation when needed.

Any decision to change the manager must also consider which replacements are
available. There are times when no obvious replacement is available, but
this is not one of those times: Curbishley and, much as it pains to say so,
Allardyce are both obvious candidates. Outsiders include Chris Hughton,
while Hodgson and Houllier are probably coming soon to the market. A new
manager must be allowed time to bed in. Can West Ham afford that time?

But we know that G&S are proud of not changing managers at the drop of a
hat. To sack two managers within a few months of each other may reek of
incompetence.

New players are an absolute must. But we hear from the German club
Hoffenheim that West Ham have no money to pay for Ba. Is this a G&S
bargaining position, or are the coffers truly empty? One or two decent
additions would give everyone, supporters and players alike, a useful lift,
while another Quashie would certainly have the opposite effect. At the
present time, it's hard to see how we are going to add significant quality
to the first team.

Everyone associated with the club knows that something has to be done if
we're to stay up. The owners' challenge is to determine the best option. Is
it as easy as it sounds? I'm not so sure.

West Ham United Chairman David Sullivan has updated supporters on the
efforts being made to strengthen the Hammers squad this month. With the team
going well on a four-match unbeaten run in the Barclays Premier League and
contemplating a Carling Cup semi-final next week, the Board are working
behind the scenes to sign new players. Although different names are being
linked every single day, the club will not confirm until moves are official.
Mr Sullivan said: "We will bring in two or three players whatever happens
and have had a few meetings already. As I say, watch this space but the
squad and the players we have now have also shown that they are good enough.
"We can never sit still, though, and this goes for all areas of the club. We
have to be mindful that you can only register 25 players and we already have
a squad of 30 players."

David Coles has lauded the form of Robert Green during West Ham United's
recent run of impressive results. Green has scooped man of the match awards
in each of the Hammers previous two matches, producing a string of fine
saves in Saturday's 2-0 Barclays Premier League victory over Wolverhampton
Wanderers in particular. The goalkeeper coach was fulsome in his praise of
the No1, who also helped West Ham to reach the Carling Cup semi-finals
courtesy of a thrilling 4-0 victory over Manchester United in November. The
30-year-old stopper will be hoping to hit top form again when West Ham
travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday evening. Coles put Green's fine form
down to his professional approach to every training session and match he
takes part in. "Rob has been very consistent over the last two or three
months. Whatever people said about him is irrelevant and in the past. "He is
a fantastic person to work with. When he comes in to train he is very
thorough and to the point and very articulate."

Green has missed just one Premier League match since March 2007, while he is
also fully committed to helping the club's stable of aspiring goalkeepers,
including Ruud Boffin, Marek Stech and the injured Peter Kurucz. "He works
well with the young ones and is basically just an excellent player and
person to have at the club," Coles confirmed.

In-form defender James Tomkins is ready to play his part again this evening
at Newcastle United

James Tomkins has spoken about the significance of tonight's meeting with
Newcastle United. The 21-year-old defender has been an impressive part of
the Hammers rearguard in recent weeks, playing his part in the four-match
unbeaten run. He will again partner Matthew Upson at St. James' Park this
evening and said the game was one the team would approach with confidence.
"We have been playing well and have come of the back of a good week. We have
gone out there believing in ourselves and believing we could win the game.
That's what we are trying to do in every game. They are all big games. "Now
as we start the New Year, we have got to build on these results. The Wolves
win is something we can take into the next game against Newcastle."

With the Hammers dropping back into the bottom three after Tuesday's
fixtures, no oe in Avram Grant's lineup is thinking that they have achieved
anything yet. "It is still tough, the games are coming along thick and
fast. We just have to focus on each game as it comes along." "We are
defending well as a team, we are all defending better. The team spirit is up
even more and we are all very much together. We have started the year well,
hopefully we can keep this run going. It is a massive game at Newcastle. We

Alan Pardew insists he harbours no bad feeling towards West Ham as he
prepares to go up against his former employers with Newcastle on Wednesday
night. The manager, who took the helm at St James' Park in December, guided
the Hammers to an FA Cup final during his three-year reign at Upton Park,
but was shown the door by the club's then new owners in December 2006 after
a run of poor results. Pardew says it is all water under the bridge, but
feels he would have kept his job at the East London club had striker Dean
Ashton not got injured. He said: "I don't harp on it. My experience there,
to my mind, was a fantastic one. I had some great times there. "It was tough
at the start - I had a really tough group, who I inherited, that didn't want
to play for the club.

Stronger

"But I managed to get through that and build a really good side. I left a
side that was a lot stronger than when I arrived. I was proud of my
achievements at West Ham and I don't harbour any bad feeling. "I honestly
believe that if Dean Ashton hadn't got injured, there's no way I'd have lost
my job that year. No way. "He was absolutely flying. He was England's No.9.
It gives me a good comparison to Andy Carroll, because I look at Andy now
and, while he's not the same player as Dean, I can see the hunger and the
desire to be England's No.9 in Andy. "Owners have their own agenda. And if
you're not part of that agenda, you're not going to survive too long. So I
wasn't surprised when the Icelandic group came in that I wasn't around for
very long."

Parker confirms he won't quit West Ham

Scott Parker has confirmed to talkSPORT he doesn't want to leave West Ham
this month. The Hammers' Player of the Year has been constantly linked with
a move to Spurs, but either side of Christmas West Ham manager Avram Grant
and co-owner David Gold told talkSPORT there was no way their prize asset
was going to be sold. And after last weekend's vital 2-0 win over Wolves at
Upton Park, Parker himself expressed his desire to stay and lead the Hammers
out of danger and preserve their Premier League stauts. And that news has
been welcomed by West Ham legend Billy Bonds. "I don't watch a lot of West
Ham [these days], but from what I have seen I think Scott Parker is the best
tackler in the game," he said. "His timing is great. "I've always liked
Scotty as a player. He's honest and has more ability than some people give
him credit for. He's as good going forward as we've got, sitting in front of
the back four and makes some great penetrating breaks. "I just wish there
were a few more of him around."

West Ham target Demba Ba goes on strike at Hoffenheim to force through
transfer

Demba Ba, the Hoffenheim striker wanted by West Ham United, has gone on
strike at the Bundesliga club in an effort to force through a £6m move to
Upton Park during the January transfer window. The Senegal international
faces sanctions from his club after he reacted to Hoffenheim's reluctance to
open talks with the London club. After Ba failed to join the rest of the
squad on a trip to Malaga for winter training Hoffenheim's managing director
Ernst Tanner demanded that the player make the trip with him a day later but
Ba dug his heels in and remained in Germany. Tanner is unwilling to concede
to Ba's wishes and will consider the club's next move, which could see the
player forced to see out the remaining two and a half years of his contract
even if he refuses to play again for the club. "Yes, it's true he has
refused to go to La Manga, even though we demanded he catch a flight and
join up with his team-mates," Tanner told the Daily Mail. "I have told him
he will have to face the consequences. It could be a fine or we could throw
him out altogether and make him see out his contract without playing."

Ba has scored 37 goals in 93 games for Hoffenheim and the tall, powerful
forward is seen by West Ham United as the perfect addition to add firepower
to their relegation battle. A loan until the end of the season was proposed
by West Ham with a view to making the deal permanent in the summer.
Hoffenheim have so far proved unwilling to accept the offer though Ba's
lawyer, Ran Ronen, remains hopeful a deal can be struck. "It does seem Demba
could move, and he'd like it to be to the Premier League. West Ham came up
with a bid, but, at the moment, Hoffenheim do not appear to be working on
it," he said.

SCOTT PARKER has warned his former side Newcastle they face a revitalised
West Ham outfit tonight at St James' Park. The former Newcastle skipper, who
left the Magpies in 2007, admits the Hammers were in disarray when the two
sides met in October, when goals from Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan sealed a
win for the Geordies at Upton Park. But since then West Ham have secured a
place in the last four of the Carling Cup and enjoyed an outstanding festive
period which has seen them climb off the foot of the Premier League table.
Parker said: "Newcastle is somewhere we can go and win. "We are confident
and it is a winnable game. "If we can go and be solid like we have in the
last two away games we can pick up some points there. "Everyone has pulled
together. We have all dug in even though it has been difficult at times. We
have picked up some results and we are looking upwards now. "The young lads
have come in and give us something different – a bit of enthusiasm and a
spark. "Freddie Sears has done very well and James Tomkins has been

Fresh from the 2-0 win over Wolves, the Hammers are aiming to end a Tyneside

The Hammers have no new injury or suspension worries ahead the game, but
Manuel da Costa and Tomas Hitzlsperger are still in the treatment room.
Freddie Sears and Junior Stanislas are likely to keep their places in the
side with Avram Grant unlikely to change the team which has picked up two
wins and two draws from their four games over the festive period. Sears
scored his first goal since March 2008 as Hammers beat Wolves to climb out

WHEN West Ham met Wolves last season it proved to be a disaster both for the
team as they crashed to a demoralising 3-1 defeat and for defender James
Tomkins in particular as his first-half mistake put Mick McCarthy's boys on
their way to three points. That game back in March proved to be Tomkins last
of the season, but move forward nine months and the young centre half is
back and playing the best football of his life. "I feel I've matured a lot,"
said Tomkins, who is still only 21, but on Saturday made his 50th league
appearance in claret and blue. "Obviously last year I learnt a lot and I've
played quite a lot of games for my tender age. "In the Wolves game last
season there were circumstances when it was even closer to the end of the
season, but I've matured a lot since then and I'm now learning and enjoying
playing."

The statistics bear out Tomkins assurance that he has learnt from his
mistakes. When he first broke into the team, every error he made seemed to
cost the Hammers a goal, but since his return to regular first team football
this season, he has even overshadowed England star Matty Upson. West Ham
have let in 35 goals this season, but when Tomkins has played they have
conceded just 13, including three clean sheets against Oxford and Manchester
United in the Carling Cup and on Saturday against Wolves. Tomkins was
relieved that the team managed to get over the line against Wolves this time
round.
"The year couldn't have started better for us," he said. "We had a good week
of results. Beating Fulham was a big result and drawing against Everton the
other day meant we were full of confidence going into this game. "We knew we
could win and went out there believing in ourselves and we've come out with
a victory."

The defence certainly seems to have shored up in recent weeks, not only with
Tomkins taking over from the injured Manuel Da Costa in the centre of
defence, but also the inclusion of two more centre halves in the full back
positions. "We've played together for a couple of games now, so hopefully
we're developing a good partnership there now," said Tomkins. "The two full
backs – Danny and Tal – who normally play centre half, are doing really well
playing for us. I hope they can keep that going, so we can keep building as
a back four for the rest of the season."

It is not just personnel though, the England under-21 international was
quick to point out the part played by new defensive coach Wally Downes.
Since his arrival following the disastrous 3-0 drubbing at Liverpool, West
Ham have let in just eight goals in eight games. "We are keeping things
solid, not just with the back four, but with the whole team," said Tomkins.
"We're defending well as a team and with the new defensive coach, as a back
four we've just improved and come together. "The team spirit has gone up
even more and we're more together and hopefully, having started the year
well, we can just keep going."

We always knew that Tomkins had the potential to go a long way with West Ham
United. Now the former Academy boy seems to have cut out those painful
mistakes that seemed to plague him at the start of his career. And if he can
keep that up then the Hammers will have found another top quality player off
the Academy production line.

Avram Grant seems to have gained a bit of job security over the festive
period and he will hope to continue to guide West Ham away from relegation
danger at Newcastle. The Hammers boss had briefly steered his side up from
bottom position in the Premier League to a spot outside of the drop zone
after picking up eight points from a potential 12. But results elsewhere
mean that West Ham have been sucked back into the bottom three ahead
kick-off at St James' Park and Grant, who was previously thought to be one
defeat away from the sack, will hope for another win. Newcastle, though, are
on the up after Sunday's win at Wigan, which came after successive defeats
to Manchester City and Tottenham, and will be boosted by the news that
injured ace Hatem Ben Arfa has signed a permanent deal. Alan Pardew was not
so much offered a honeymoon period as a one night stand after succeeding
Chris Hughton in December, as an impressive opening victory over Liverpool
was followed by painful losses.

But the win at the DW Stadium was as straightforward as three points come
and, despite the absence of injured striker Andy Carroll, the Toon Army will
be demanding another success to build on a position of 10th. Shola Ameobi is
again likely to lead the line for Newcastle with Carroll, who is understood
to have been the subject of a dismissed enquiry from Tottenham, still
nursing his thigh complaint. Carroll is also unlikely to be fit for

Reading star Shane Long has rejected reports linking him with a January move
to West Ham. Hammers boss Avram Grant is keen to bolster his attacking

Jamie Redknapp believes West Ham United must do all they can to retain Scott
Parker this month, because the all-action midfielder is integral to Hammers'
Premier League survival. Parker has been linked with a move to Tottenham
Hotspur and Liverpool in the past, but Redknapp suggests the 30-year-old's
importance to Avram Grant cannot be understated, crediting the England
international with amassing at least half of the London club's Premier
League points. Although rumours of a potential move to Liverpool and
Tottenham persist, the aforementioned Sky Sports pundit believes West Ham
United will almost certainly reject any advances from their league
counterparts. Redknapp told skysports.com: "They are not far off a one-man
team, he is that important to them. "There will always be talk of him
leaving but there's no way they can let that happen - it would upset the
fans and consign them to relegation. "He has been worth half their points,
at least, on his own."

This one's interesting: if reports are to be believed, Everton manager David
Moyes is apparently keen on signing Michael Owen. Well, if the former
England striker didn't anger Liverpool fans enough by joining Manchester
United, then a move to the blue half of Merseyside should just about clinch
it.

In fact, online publication Crunch Sports has it that both Everton and West
Ham may make a move for the injury-prone striker this month, with both sides
primarily interested in a loan deal due to lack of funds.

Owen is currently well and truly last in the pecking order at Old Trafford,
and would welcome the prospect of regular first-team football. However,
having allowed Danny Welbeck, Mame Biram Diouf and now Federico Macheda to
go out on loan, Alex Ferguson may be hesitant to release Owen as well,
leaving United with just three recognised strikers.

Yet the real problem with this rumour is its assumption that Owen would add
anything at all to either Everton or West Ham. Because, quite honestly, he
wouldn't; at United he is little more than an extra body should the need
arise, and Avram Grant or David Moyes surely couldn't expect much more from
Owen, who will never be anything like the player he once was.

These two clubs boast youth systems which have produced some of the best
footballers around, three of whom are currently playing in the United
first-team! (Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney)

If they're that short on options and that short on funds, they should look
to their own youth teams, and steer clear of players like Owen, whose
physical frailties will likely make them more trouble than they're worth.

Tottenham have stepped up their battle with West Ham to move into London's
Olympic stadium by appointing the country's leading sports spin doctor Mike
Lee. Spurs hope Lee, the director of communications for London's successful
Olympic bid, will keep them a key advantage. Lee, who used to be a board
member at West Ham, also helped Rio win the 2016 Olympics, and Qatar the
2022 World Cup. West Ham's combative campaign has been led by vice-chairman
Karren Brady, who has used her column in a national newspaper to highlight
the non-domicile tax status of Spurs' owners. Final offers for the stadium
must be submitted to the Olympic Park Legacy Company by January 21 and its
board is expected to identify a single 'preferred bidder' at a meeting a
week later. Legacy chiefs want to complete contractual negotiations for a
long-term lease of the stadium by the spring. London's Olympics chief
Sebastian Coe has already backed West Ham, believing they will deliver a
stronger legacy. The club also wants to retain the athletics track. Coe
said: 'We made a commitment to track and field to be a part of the legacy of
the stadium so, as vice-president of the IAAF, it's not going to come as a
huge shock that I am going to defend and help my sport.' While Spurs have
made their intentions clear, many supporters are not keen on a possible move
to Stratford.

Newcastle Utd Away is a Good Test of Our Progress!
West Ham Till I Die

Well, we really cannot complain about the results over the Festive Season.
We needed a minimum return of 7 points, from the three matches, and the team
delivered that. Obviously, the other two points against Everton would have
been nice, but we must consider that a point won rather than two lost.

Indeed, Everton were very impressive and could easily have won the match.
Hopefully, that result is indicative of two things. Firstly, we are
starting to display the type of cohesion and fighting spirit that helps
secure results against the run of play. Secondly, our luck has began to
turn and lady Fortuna has finally started to smile on us. Personally, I
feel that people tend to make their own luck and would prefer to believe
that the former factor predominates.

It was very good to see the Wolves result lift us up to 15th, if only for a
short period. The Fulham and Birmingham results saw us sink back in to the
bottom three, but that just demonstrates how incrediably close it is in the
bottom half of the table. West Ham's form is actually very good and, as I
have stated previously, the key factor this season has been our inability to
turn a few of our too numerous draws in to victories. All we can do in this
situation is keep winning and hope that we can open up a points gaps between
ourselves and the relegation zone.

In that respect, the match against Newcastle Utd is a very good test of the
squad's improvement. It is a fixture that we have not had a great record
in over the last ten years or so, but it is also a game that must be
considered winnable. We need to go out there and match them physically,
early on, and then impose our attacking game. Thankfully, they are likely
to be missing Andy Carroll, which is a big miss for them and a real bonus
for us. Indeed, that absence could prove to be a big factor in us getting a
result up there?

Finally, I must say that I was abslutely delighted to see Freddie Sears come
back and play so well over the Festive period. I wrote before Christmas
that I would not write off Freddie Sears just yet, because young players
can often demonstrate fluctuating form or prove to be late developers.
Historically, think of the greats like Hurst and Brooking who took time to
show their their true potential or others like Paul Allen who had a dip in
form after a brilliant start to their first team career.

The problem is that in the cut and thrust of the modern game, people are too
quick to write off youngsters, without fully appreciating the true nature of
youth development. Expecting youngsters to come in to the side, make an
instant, positive impact and then maintain that form long term is
unrealistic. Rather they need to be introduced, when ready, stretched and
then rested as appropriate. Look at James Tomkins last season, the best
thing that the club did was to rest Tomkins and give him the time and space
to work on his game and come back all the stronger this season.

Freddie Sears still has a way to go to establish himself as a first team
regular, but he has made significant strides towards that goal. They are
using his pace on the flanks to good effect, but it was good to see him come
inside against Wolves to score. It was also notable in that match that
Sears got at least four shots on target in the match and was unlucky not to
score more than once. He certainly looks physically stronger now, having
matured and obviously benefited from playing regularly during the loan spell
at Scunthorpe.

Indeed, it was interesting to hear Neill Warnock talk, on 'Goals on Sunday'
about Freddie Sears' loan period at Crystal Palace and the negative impact
that the 'non-goal' against Bristol City had on his self-belief. He seemed
to indicate that Sears is essentially a confidence player. If so, that goal
against Wolves can only help and hopefully others will now follow.

As for tonight's match, I feel that a draw is possibly on the cards,
although I will stick my neck out and go for a 1-2 Hammers victory. The
important thing is to continue showing improvement and resilience and, in
doing so, avoid a 3-0 walloping that could serve to undermine the team's new
found consistency and confidence.

The relegation zone is a bit like quick sand. If you have have a grip on a
line, you need to keep on pulling yourself to safety or you will inevitably
sink back! That is likely to be even more true this season, the way that
the PL is shaping up to be such a close affair.

Newcastle will attempt to record back-to-back Premier League victories for
only the second time this season as West Ham come to St. James' Park on
Wednesday (7.45pm kick-off).

The Magpies will be hoping to build on Sunday's win at Wigan and continue to
make an impression on the top half of the table against their struggling
opponents. The fixture also sees Newcastle boss Alan Pardew go up against
the club he managed for three years from 2003-2006, and led to an FA Cup
final. Pardew will have to do without 11-goal top scorer Andy Carroll,
however, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, while centre-back Sol
Campbell (illness) is also sidelined. In defeating Fulham on Boxing Day,
West Ham ended their 16-month wait for an away league win. But despite their
recent upturn in form, which has seen seven points taken from a possible
nine over the festive period, the Hammers remain in the relegation zone.

Visiting boss Avram Grant will assess injury doubts over midfielder Valon
Behrami (hip) and defender Lars Jacobsen (heel), but could recall fit-again
midfielder Mark Noble to the starting line-up. However they have a lengthy
casualty list, with Jack Collison, Anthony Edgar, Peter Kurucz (all knee),
Manuel Da Costa (ankle), Kieron Dyer, Thomas Hitzlsperger (both thigh),
Herita Ilunga (muscle problem) and Benni McCarthy (calf) all ruled out.
This evening's meeting is the 121st match between the two clubs, and the
116th in the league. And the recent statistics make good reading for
Newcastle - who have remained unbeaten at home against West Ham since 1998,
when a double from Ian Wright and one from Trevor Sinclair condemned them to
defeat.

West Ham are on the verge of missing out on Steve Sidwell, with fellow
relegation battlers Wolves waiting in the wings to snap up the midfielder.
The Aston Villa man was lined up for a move to Molineux before Christmas but
Avram Grant's side hijacked the deal when they offered the former Arsenal
man a return to London. The Championship medal winner at Reading passed a
medical at Upton Park and was set to seal a move in the New Year but
confusion at the east London club has allowed Wolves to re-enter the
equation. David Gold has publicly stated that the club are actively involved
in up to 15 different January transfers and that has lead to complications
in the deal for Sidwell. The 28-year-old is also earning £45,000-a-week at
Villa, after joining on a free-transfer from Chelsea in 2008, and the West
Ham hierarchy have baulked at the player's wage demands Avram Grant is
believed to still be interested in the player but, with Wolves and West Brom
ready to offer him a deal and The Hammers stalling, the Israeli manager is
likely to miss out. Wolves already have three of Sidwell's former Reading
team-mates in their squad in Kevin Doyle, Stephen Hunt and goalkeeper Marcus
Hahnemann and the short move across the west Midlands would add to a smooth
transition.

Radoslav Kovac is looking forward to celebrating his first appearance at St
James' Park with three valuable Barclays Premier League points. The Czech
midfielder has enjoyed a productive festive season, helping the Hammers to
pick up eight points from their previous four matches to climb out of the
relegation zone. Wednesday's trip to newly-promoted Newcastle United offers
Kovac and his team-mates another chance to collect points and continue their
ascent of the standings. The 31-year-old told WHUTV that West Ham have what
it takes to win on Tyneside. "I was very happy with last Saturday because we
picked up a very important three points and I think this run can carry on.
Our situation is much, much better, but we need to continue to collect
points. "I hope we can keep rising up the table. Everybody has stuck
together and we took eight points from the four matches over Christmas and
the New Year."

Kovac has been an influential figure in Avram Grant's side in recent weeks.
Indeed, in 13 league and cup appearances this season, West Ham have lost
just twice. The defensive midfielder has started three times in the club's
run to the Carling Cup semi-finals and will be eyeing another appearance
when Birmingham City visit the Boleyn Ground for the semi-final first-leg
next Tuesday evening. For now, though, Kovac is fully-focused on helping
West Ham's Barclays Premier League cause. "It's a very big game against
Birmingham and it's very good that we're in the semi-final and so close to
the final but for me Premier League points are much more important. "Of
course it would be nice to play at Wembley again after I played there for my
national team, but for me it is more important that we pick up Premier
points."

Avram Grant was naturally upbeat on the back of a four-match unbeaten run as
he looked ahead to Newcastle United in his pre-match press conference. The
manager was asked once more about his squad situation and any possible
incomings but stressed that the focus was on keeping the good run going.

Avram on being out of the bottom three...

The feeling is good but we have a long way to go. We did well in the last
ten days by collecting points. We are very happy because we felt we needed
it and deserved it. If we were in the other situation I would still feel we
can do good things here. The atmosphere and the spirit are good but it was
before. Of course, the players are happier because football is a game of
results.

Avram on using the run as a springboard for the rest of the season…

I think yes it can be. We will have good days but we will also have not so
good days. This is football. Now we are in good momentum and we want to
continue this.

Avram on his lucky scarf - worn in the recent three wins...

It started in the game against Manchestter United. It was very cold. So Bob
[Oteng] the kitman gave me a scarf. I liked it because it was a scarf of the
club and since then I wear it a lot and we are winning. Maybe it is not
because we are scoring more goals…I am not superstitious so much but I will
not go against it!

We are dealing with the situation. I don't have any news at the moment
especially as we have a game coming up and we want to concentrate on that. I
don't have anything to say on any deals until they are done. We know we want
the squad to be stronger. We are following the players that could help us
but we will not bring 15 or even five.

Avram on interest in David Beckham…

There are many other teams that want him. He is a big player and a big
personality. If he wants to come to West Ham, he is welcome. I like him as a
player and as a person. He is a local lad, which is a small advantage. We
talked about him at the beginning of the season but we try to be realistic
about all of these things. We are concentrating on what we have and what we
need to do.

Avram on Freddie Sears' impact and using young players...

I am very pleased with any young players that are coming in and doing
something. I am happy for him and the team because he is part of the vision
of this club - to use the young players but they need to be good and prove
themselves. He needs to continue like this. If he carries on he can play a
role for us to the end of the season. We have three under-21s who have been
playing in difficult times.

Avram on facing Newcastle United…

It would be great to keep the momentum going and so will they. They won a
difficult game away at Wigan and we are doing well. They are a very good
team, with a lot of quality. We are concentrating on what we need to do.
They have played well since the beginning of the season. They got some good
results against Sunderland and Liverpool. They have been playing together
for a long time.

Avram on the emotion for former Hammers manager Alan Pardew on Wednesday…

You need to ask him if it will be an emotional game for him. I like him as a
person and I think he is a very good manager.

Steve Sidwell passes medical but West Ham move on hold

Steve Sidwell's move to West Ham from Aston Villa has been delayed after the
midfielder passed a medical and agreed personal terms at Upton Park.
It has been reported the 28-year-old is mulling over offers from other
clubs. Hammers boss Avram Grant said: "I have nothing to say until the deals
are done. But I like Steve. I worked with him at Chelsea, he never let me
down."

Grant had hoped to bolster the midfield with his team only one point above
the Premier League relegation zone. With Sidwell still to put pen to paper,
Grant was left a little bemused as to why the deal was still to be
concluded. "I don't know, I am not dealing with the situation and I don't
have any news but we are continuing to look at this situation," the Israeli
told Sky Sports. Regarding other potential acquisitions in the current
transfer window, Grant added: "January stories, part of them are true and
part are not. "We have followed many players like many clubs, we are
following players to make us strong, but we will not bring in 15 players,
not even five."

Sidwell has played only four league games for Villa this season and was
signed from Chelsea for £5m in 2008. He began his professional career with
Arsenal in 2001 and has also played for Brentford, Brighton and Reading.
Having climbed off the bottom of the table, West Ham face a trip to
Newcastle on Wednesday where they will come up against former Hammers boss
Alan Pardew. Grant, looking to build on a run of four unbeaten matches,
said: "The feeling is good but there is a long way to go."

Petrol's up, VAT is up and train fares are up. The start of 2011 is full of
gloom and doom. And just when you think the start of the year couldn't get
any worse, here's Preview Percy to prove you wrong. Very wrong.....

Next up we have a long trip up the A1 and A1 (M) to St James' Park where we
visit Newcastle United for a supporter-unfriendly 7.45pm kick-off. Thanks a
bunch Premier League.

Now before I start a quick word for any Geordies that may be passing this
way. A quick check of a routefinder suggests that the distance between the
church of St Mary Le Bow in Cheapside, City of London (the site of the
famous Bow Bells) and High Wycombe, birthplace of Mike Ashley in the county
of Buckinghamshire is 31.2 miles. The distance between St James' Park and
The Stadium of Light is 12.6 miles. So the next time you decide to blame
some "Cockney Mafia" for all your ills bear in mind that you lot are roughly
2.5 times as Mackem as Ashley is "Cockney". So unless you want to spend the
rest of your lives being called "Mackems" try and come up with another
epithet for your scapegoat!

Rant over, our hosts currently lie in 10th place which, is 8 places and five
points above ourselves, them having a game in hand. Their last six matches
have produced 7 points with wins over Wigan (1-0 away), and Liverpool (3-1
home), defeats to Spurs (2-0 away), Man City (3-1 home) and West Brom (3-1
away) and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Of course it's been all change since we met them at the Boleyn last October.
Chris Hughton got the sack at the beginning of December, a move which,
although not entirely unexpected, still met with almost universal
disapproval from the football world. Hughton was replaced by Alan Pardew who
had been jobless since his falling out with the suits at Southampton. The
high point of Pardew's tenure at the Boleyn was of course the 2006 Cup
Final. After that, of course, the Icelandic hoards descended upon us like an
ash cloud from a volcano and by the end of the year Pardew was gone. And
that's all I have to say on that one. Plans to bring in Bradford manager
(and sometime Norman Wisdom impersonator) Peter Taylor alongside seem to
have come to naught with Taylor apparently preferring to stay in Yorkshire.

There's been a few updates on the legal front on Tyneside. You may recall
from an earlier preview that Andy Carroll had embarked on a one-man attempt
to keep the various courts in Newcastle open. Back in October Carroll was
bailed to appear for trial on assault charges on condition that he stay with
skipper Kevin Nolan, the idea being that this would keep the striker out of
trouble. This theory took a knock following tabloid "birds and booze"
allegations following the 5-1 defeat of Sunderland. However, on the bright
side for the lanky forward, the other court case that was pending at the
time of our last meeting has been dropped. This would have allowed him to
concentrate on this match were it not for the thigh injury that made him
miss the win at Wigan. He'll be out for another week or two which will
probably mean another start for Shola Ameobi, who put away a rather
scrambled winner at whatever the JJB Stadium is called this week.

Over the past few months young Dutch 'keeper Tim Krul had established
himself between the sticks in the absence of usual first choice 'keeper
Steve Harper through injury. Harper had recovered enough to make the bench
for the three matches prior to Wigan. However, he was restored to the
starting line-up on Sunday by Pardew who declared him to be his no.1 and he
will start tomorrow. In fact, there being no injury worries for the home
side (other than long-term casualties Ben Arfa, Taylor (Ryan) and Gosling)
I'd suspect that there won't be too many changes to the starting XI from
that which prevailed over Whelan's mob on Sunday which would mean them
lining up with Simpson, Taylor (Steven), Coloccini and Enrique across the
back, and Barton (with whom some sources have us linked), Tiote, Nolan and
Gutierrez (aka Jonas to save shirt printing costs).

As for ourselves, well there are no fresh injury worries. Kieron Dyer seems
to have been abducted by aliens and taken to their home planet – which is
probably even further away from civilisation than Newcastle. It's entirely
possible that he may teleport his way into contention through some hole in
the space-time continuum in time to face his old club, but it's not
something on which I'd stick money.

In midfield, Noble's return to fitness might see him replace Kovac whilst
Behrami is supposed to be "under assessment" though I'd be gobsmacked if his
dodgy hip repaired itself this side of the transfer window closing. You may
recall a similar injury that kept him out of contention at the start of the
season. Coincidence? I doubt it. Cynical? You bet! Jacobsen's heel faces
another inspection though I thought Ben-Haim did well enough against Wolves
to merit a start at right-back.

Up front it'll be a case of who is feeling fresh enough to survive our squad
rotation. Cole alternated between superb one minute and awful the next and
I've lost count of how many air-shots he's made in front of goal this
season. However, the two goals against Fulham were well taken and the last
time we were up on Tyneside he enjoyed himself so, for what it's worth I'd
start him though Grant may have other ideas.

Results have not been over favourable to us since the weekend and, without
kicking a ball, we find ourselves back in the relegation zone. It's tighter
than Chalks at round-buying time in there at the moment and one result can
almost have you looking at Europe. Ok a bit of an exaggeration perhaps but
as we saw at the weekend a leap of five places is entirely possible. Their
patchy form suggests that a win ought to be possible up there – especially
in the absence of Carroll. Whilst 3 points would be most agreeable, I think
that this one has "draw" written all over it so my prediction is for a 1-1
draw, a result which, although not good enough to get us out of the bottom
three, would nevertheless be a good return from somewhere that it is often
difficult to go.

weigh in with important goals.

Referee: Mike Dean – Something stinks here. This is the fourth time this
season we will have had to endure the posturings of this disgrace to the
game. Man Utd have had him only twice – and one of those was in the League
Cup against Scunthorpe. At least we're not live on the box – occasions for
which the Wirral Moron usually reserves his most appalling of decisions.

West Ham's performances over the festive period mean Avram Grant's job
appears safe, for now at least. However, a trip to St James' Park will be a
salutary reminder of how quickly things can change; Chris Hughton guided
Newcastle to victory in the reverse fixture yet was sacked six weeks later.
A change of management certainly looked on the cards following the Hammers'
lifeless display against the Magpies on 23 October, but few would have
expected it to come on Tyneside. Newcastle boss Alan Pardew could have found
himself in the visitors' dug-out if West Ham had decided to axe Grant. The
Englishman never made any secret of his desire to return to the club that
sacked him in December 2006. Pardew's controversial appointment at St James'
Park caused unease amongst many Newcastle fans. However, performances so far
have generally been encouraging, and memories of Hughton's ruthless
dismissal are beginning to fade. Deprived of star man Andy Carroll against
Wigan on Sunday, the Magpies nonetheless won comfortably to move into the
top half of the table. West Ham ended their 16-month wait for an away league
win at Fulham on Boxing Day, and took seven points from a possible nine over
the festive period. However, they have not won back-to-back games on the
road since 2007, while their last win at Newcastle was in 1998.

Avram Grant admits the mood in the West Ham camp has lifted on the back of a
four-match unbeaten run. The Hammers boss insists belief within the camp has
never plummeted, during a difficult first half to the 2010/11 campaign, but
concedes that a reversal in fortune has helped to raise morale. Having been
left propping up the Premier League table at Christmas, there were fears
that West Ham could be in for a long, hard slog. They have, however, enjoyed
a productive start to 2011, with a 2-0 victory over fellow strugglers Wolves
on New Year's Day taking them out of the drop zone. All of sudden things are
looking up around Upton Park and the pressure which had been building on
Grant's shoulders has started to ease.

"The feeling is good but there is a long way to go," said the Israeli coach.
"We did well in the last 10 days and we are very happy because we needed
points and we felt we deserved points. "The atmosphere is the same, the
spirit is good and of course the players are happier. At the end of the day

have good days and not so good days. "We will face tough times and good

Roque Santa Cruz. Skysports.com understands Aston Villa, West Ham, Fulham,
Newcastle and Blackburn are all keen on the Paraguayan. He has also been
linked with a move to the continent with Serie A and Bundesliga interest
confirmed, but it seems he is more likely to remain in England. City are
willing to let Santa Cruz leave, but would rather sell him than loan him,

deal due to his wages. The 29-year-old will have the last word on his new

Upton Park. Speculation over Beckham's future continues to mount with the
former England captain keen on securing a loan deal in Europe during the MLS
off season. Los Angeles Galaxy are yet to confirm whether they will sanction
any move, but that has not stopped the likes of Tottenham, Sunderland,
Newcastle and Blackburn all enquiring about his availability. Now Grant has
refused to rule West Ham out of the equation, should Beckham move to
England. "There are other teams who want him, he is a big player with a big
personality and if he wants to come to West Ham he would be welcome," Grant
told Sky Sports News. "I like him as a player and as a person, and he is a
local, so another advantage."

Grant admitted that the club's owners David Gold and David Sullivan, had
previously spoken to him about Beckham. "We spoke in the beginning of the
season, and we try to be realistic about these things," he said. "From our

West Ham United manager Avram Grant admits he is unaware as to why Steve
Sidwell has not completed his move to the club. The Hammers looked set to
land the Aston Villa midfielder on loan after he completed his medical and
agreed terms. However, it now appears that the move has been delayed as
rivals bids have been lodged for his services. Grant, though, admits he does
not know why Sidwell is not yet signed up. "I don't know, I am not dealing
with the situation and I don't have any news but we are continuing to look
at this situation," he told Sky Sports News. "I said that I like him, I
worked with him at Chelsea, he is a good person and that is part of the
atmosphere we are trying to create here. "I don't know as it is not up to me
at the moment."

Demba Ba's agent has confirmed West Ham's interest, but admitted a deal is
looking unlikely at the moment. Hoffenheim have flown to La Manga for a
winter training camp, but Ba was not present as they jetted out to Spain
amid claims he was heading for England. However, Hoffenheim spokesman Markus
Sieger has confirmed that Senegalese ace Ba will link up with the rest of
the squad as planned on Tuesday. "It is planned that Demba will travel
today," he told Deutsche Presseagentur. Ba's lawyer Ran Ronen confirmed that
West Ham have made contact with Hoffenheim.

No secret

"On Monday, nothing really new happened," he told Spox. "Today he will fly
to La Manga with Ernst Tanner [Hoffenheim general manager]. "It does seem he
could move and Demba would like to join a Premier League outfit, this is no
secret. "Joining West Ham? This is something I would put in doubt. I cannot
say anything concrete, West Ham did come up with a bid, but at the moment
Hoffenheim don't appear to be working on it." It is believed West Ham would
like to take Ba on loan with a view to a £6million deal in the summer.
25-year-old Ba, who spent time with Watfordas a youth player, joined

AVRAM GRANT will be wearing his lucky West Ham scarf at Newcastle tonight.
The Hammers boss was given the neckwear by club kitman Bob Oteng before the
stunning 4-0 win over Manchester United in the Carling Cup quarter-finals.
Grant did not wear it for the next two games — defeats by Sunderland and
Manchester City. But since putting it back on, West Ham have taken eight
points from 12 and moved out of the bottom three for the first time this
season. Grant said: "Against Manchester United, it was very, very cold, so
Bob the kitman supplied the scarf. "Since then, every time I have worn the
scarf we have not lost, so I'm going with it. "I won't wear it in the summer
unless people believe it brings goals. "When I was manager of Maccabi Tel
Aviv in the winter of 1993, we won 11 games and I kept wearing the same
clothes. "But I couldn't carry on, my shirt was smelling. I changed and we
drew. The owner blamed me."

Grant's troops face former Hammers boss Alan Pardew at St James' Park
tonight. Grant added: "The feeling is good but we have a long way to go. I
think it can be a springboard. "We will have good days and not so good days
before the end of the season and need to get used to any situation. "Even in

West Ham United striker Benni McCarthy on loan. QPR have offered to pay some
of McCarthy's £50,000-a-week salary and would then be prepared to make a
permanent move if they secure promotion to the Premier League.
West Ham are open to offers for McCarthy and even England striker Carlton
Cole as they attempt to sign two new strikers. The Hammers have bid for the
£6 million rated Senegal international Demba Ba, who is also on Blackburn's
wanted list. Ba has scored six goals so far this season in the Bundesliga,
and Hoffenheim are keen to secure a cash deal for the striker. However,
while Blackburn are willing to take the player on a permanent deal now, the
Hammers have asked to take him on loan until the end of the season. West Ham
remain in the hunt for Tottenham forward Robbie Keane, but they face stiff
competition from Newcastle United. It now appears West Ham could back out of
the deal to sign Steve Sidwell from Aston Villa. A transfer had been agreed
and Sidwell underwent a medical at Upton Park but completion of the deal has
been delayed. With West Ham still £80 million in debt, they are weighing up
all their options and, with Mark Noble returning from injury and the club
determined to keep Scott Parker, their priorities are in attack and defence.
The deal has not yet foundered, but two other Premier League clubs - Wolves
and West Brom - have expressed interest in Sidwell.

Newcastle will be looking to cement their place in the top half of the table
with a home win, and three points could see them move up to eighth place in
the table and pushing for a Europa League spot. However, results going
against them could see them drop as low as 13th in the table.

West Ham have finally hit a good vein of form with two wins and two draws
from their last four games which has seen Avram Grant save his job, at least
for now, by steering the club away from the bottom of the table up to 16th.
Another win for the Hammers could see them further improve their position to
13th in the table, however if teams below them manage to pick up points it
could be a return to the foot of the table for the Irons.

Newcastle won the reverse fixture at Upton Park earlier in the season 2-1
with goals from Kevin Nolan and Carroll as West Ham scored with their only
shot on target of the game through Carlton Cole.

West Ham won their first away match for a huge 27 games in their last
fixture on the road as they beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage. However,
their defence will still be causing them concern as they have set a club
record with 18 games without a clean sheet away from home. It is Newcastle's
home form, in contrast, that is causing them concern with only two wins in
their last nine games in front of their famously vocal support. The Magpies
have also only managed one clean sheet in those nine fixtures. If anyone is
likely to be confident of scoring at St James' Park it is Carlton Cole, who
has bagged himself three goals in six games against Newcastle throughout his
career.

without their leading scorer Andy Carroll, whose thigh strain kept him out

Newcastle, the Irons manager said: "I really like him as a player. I worked

Alan Pardew insists he holds no bitterness towards West Ham over his
sacking. The Newcastle boss faces the Hammers convinced that if striker Dean
Ashton had not got injured, he'd never have lost his job at Upton Park.
Pardew led West Ham to an FA Cup Final during his three year reign but was
axed in December 2006 after a bad run of results. He said: "I don't harp on
it. My experience there, to my mind, was a fantastic one. I had some great
times there. "It was tough at the start – I had a really tough group, who I
inherited, that didn't want to play for the club. "But I managed to get
through that and build a really good side. I left a side that was a lot
stronger than when I arrived. I was proud of my achievements at West Ham and
I don't harbour any bad feeling. "I honestly believe that if Dean Ashton
hadn't got injured, there's no way I'd have lost my job that year. No way.
"He was absolutely flying. He was England's No.9. It gives me a good
comparison to Andy Carroll, because I look at Andy now and, while he's not
the same player as Dean, I can see the hunger and the desire to be England's
No.9 in Andy. "Owners have their own agenda. And if you're not part of that
agenda, you're not going to survive too long. So I wasn't surprised when the
Icelandic group came in that I wasn't around for very long."

Pardew has missed out on signing Peter Taylor as his No.2 after the Bradford
boss backed out yesterday.

West Ham worry over Behrami and Jacobsen fitness

West Ham will check on Lars Jacobsen and Valon Behrami ahead of the Barclays
Premier League trip to Newcastle. Full-back Jacobsen has been struggling
with a heel injury and midfielder Behrami has been out for a month with a
hip problem, but both were expected to train today. Midfielder Mark Noble is
in line to start after returning from his hip injury as a substitute against
Wolves, but Kieron Dyer (thigh), Herita Ilunga (leg), Benni McCarthy (calf),
Thomas Hitzlsperger (thigh), Jack Collison (knee) and Manuel da Costa
(ankle) remain sidelined.

Provisional squad: Green, Ben Haim, Tomkins, Upson, Gabbidon, Jacobsen,
Barrera, Stanislas, Kovac, Parker, Behrami, Spector, Boa Morte, Cole,

I have been critical in the past but Avram Grant deserves credit. He has
always stuck to his beliefs about how the game should be played and the club
will get out of trouble. There is of course a long way still to go but we
are in a much better position than we have been all season. The two wins
over Christmas have certainly secured his job in the short term, but only
time will tell if he will be at Upton Park for the long haul. He should be
praised for bringing Freddie Sears into the side when most wouldn't. A lot
of managers would have seen him go on loan at Scunthorpe and think the
standard he has been playing isn't good enough and therefore would not have
played him. Sears looked particularly sharp against Wolves and he took his
goal really well.
He didn't thrash at the ball and his movement to make himself available for
crosser Tal Ben Haim was also impressive. It was a tremendous win and one of
huge importance. You hear it described as a 'six-pointer' but I believe it
is worth more then that. The clean sheet and two goals will bring a huge
amount of confidence to players at both ends of the pitch. Games against the
sides around you dictate your season in all sorts of ways and to beat the
likes of Wolves and Fulham is a major boost. It will help attract players in
the transfer window also and it is important we are active in January. There
has been a lot of talk linking Carlton Cole with Liverpool and Valon Behrami
with a move back to Italy. Valon is clearly unhappy and I would rather us
get £5million for him than sell Carlton. I would rather keep a happy Cole
then an unhappy Behrami. On his day I still believe Carlton is our best
striker and I don't want him to go, but if the club are offered £7m or £8m,
they may be forced to wheel and deal to do whatever is necessary to keep the
club in the league. Seb Coe has given his support to West Ham to move into
the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games and although of course his opinion
is important, he does not have a final say. Seb will support West Ham
because the Hammers are the only club offering to keep the running track, a
factor which I know puts a lot of West Ham fans off moving there. I'm one of
them and it will be terrible having to watch football with a track in the
way and if it is removed it will be a fantastic stadium. I feel Spurs are
playing a bit of cat and mouse with Haringey Council and I think the club
and their fans would prefer to stay in Tottenham, but you have to face the
economics and it could favour them financially to move to east London. West
Ham and Leyton Orient will have a lot to say if Spurs do move our way,
because it is likely to have a negative effect on both sides.

Recovering West Ham United are said to be desperate to bolster their squad
in a bid to survive relegation this season. They have looked shaky at the
back throughout the campaign and have been heavily linked with moves for
several defenders, with Man City's out-of-favour Wayne Bridge as a principal
target. However, should any deal for Bridge fall through, several sources
have pinpointed Liverpool's Emiliano Insua as a potential signing.

West Ham are struggling financially and are widely tipped to use the loan
market to strengthen in January. The London club are said to be broke and
trading off game receipts so a pay by play basis would suit them to the
ground. Insua has been out on loan with Turkish club Galatasaray and his
deal is due to end on June 30th with an option to buy the Argentine.
However, Insua has looked closer to an early January return to his parent
club as current club manager, Gheorghe Hagi has stated he does not want any
loan players at his club.

Liverpool's injury problems at the back this season may lead Roy Hodgson to
think twice about allowing Insua to be loaned out again unless he makes any
defensive signings himself. Insua became a regular fixture in the Liverpool
starting XI towards the end of Rafa Benitez's reign at Anfield and impressed
fans with his tenacity and effort. A deal with Fiorentina for the wing-back
had been confirmed in the summer worth around £4.2m, however no contract was
ever signed and the deal fell through. Now it would seem Insua is keen to
return to England and a temporary deal with the Hammer's could be his
opportunity to impress.

Avram Grant has revealed the secret of West Ham United's upturn in recent
form ... his lucky scarf. The Israeli explained his side's surge up to 16th
in the Premier League was down to a piece of cloth costing less than £10
from the Upton Park shop. While players have been favouring snoods this
season, Grant was handed a scarf when temperatures dropped before the
Carling Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on 30 November. "It was
Bob Oteng, the kit man, who supplied it," Grant said. "It was very cold
against Manchester United but very warm after the game. Everything is warm
after a win."

Grant did not wear the club colours around his neck for the defeats to
Sunderland and Manchester City, and the draw with Blackburn Rovers, before
his fashion accessory returned against Fulham. There has been an element of
luck to West Ham's run of results since; Fulham set up both of Carlton
Cole's goals at Craven Cottage, while Everton and Wolves scored own goals at
Upton Park.

Grant has previous experience of having a lucky charm during an unbeaten
run, from his time with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"I remember when I was in Israel it was winter and I wore the same clothes.
We won 11 games but I couldn't carry on wearing it, my shirt was smelling. I
changed and we drew so the owner blamed me."

The West Ham owners, David Gold and David Sullivan, are said to be in a
positive mood now the club are out of the relegation zone. "I speak to the
owners all the time and they are happy because it was not easy times," Grant
said. "But I must say that even in the difficult days, we felt what we were
doing was good and we just needed to close the gap."

West Ham travel to Newcastle United tomorrow night, and Grant is now
determined to build on the win at Fulham, his side's first Premier League
away victory since the opening day of the 2009-10 season. "Not to win away
games for so long is difficult. After beating Sunderland everyone was so
happy, even though it was the Carling Cup. Fulham was very important to win,
and the way we did as well."

Questions As The Olympic Stadium Deadline Approaches.

We recently ran a poll regarding attitudes towards the Olympic stadium and
given that the deadline for the decision is looming ever closer, I wanted to
review the results and add some thoughts of my own and naturally, to pose
some more questions. Before I start, I want to say that I don't know the
answers myself, I just know how the whole thing makes me feel. The nature of
polls is such that you only get to say yes to one of the questions asked so
I wanted to ask some broader questions. My thoughts aren't based on
tradition or history, although that does bother me and as I say I've not
offered any answers, just explained why I don't think this is the right move
for West Ham in the immediate future.

Just as a reminder, here was the outcome of the poll :

38% a/ Yes, all for it. Let's go!

19% b/ Not convinced. Accept it's going to happen though.

8% c/ Undecided.

29% d/ Not happy about it. Not happy about the running track. Not
convinced we can fill it. Ill conceived idea from the off, even more so if
we go down.

2% e/ That'll probably be the end of my days as a regular over West
Ham.

3% f/ I don't go often and don't really care that much one way or the
other.


Now, I must admit that whilst it's not an outright majority, I for one was
rather surprised that option a/ won by a clear 9% in the head to head across
the five options. Obviously I don't know why people feel that way, but I
assume the new stadium is in some way linked to a statement of ambition.

I personally voted c/ and I hope my reasoning will become clear through the
course of this article.

Firstly though I want to address the issue of the legacy in broad football
terms and by this, I mean that I don't actually think that as a legacy
stadium this would be good for either West Ham or Tottenham in the short to
medium term and possibly longer. Forgetting all the politics of Tottenham
playing in Newham and what a policing nightmare that could be, if the
Olympic Committee get their way and the running track is left in place, then
I really can't see either sets of fans being that happy there. Fans
currently sitting in the East Stand that remember the Chicken Run of old
possibly already have half an inkling of what that will be like. Obviously,
it will be worse and the effect for those behind the goals even more so.

With regard to Tottenham, Levy has apparently said that he'll tear the
stadium down and build a new one and redevelop the Crystal Palace arena, but
that, if the OC stick to their guns this will be unacceptable as the legacy
is the Stratford Stadium, not the ground it stands on. That intention alone
could put West Ham in the driving seat.

Anyway, let's concentrate on West Ham.

On the face of it, we have a lopsided stadium that has been reconstructed
poorly and in sections with the oldest section, the East Stand, looking like
something from a forgotten past, but less quaint than say Fulham and with a
severely restricted capacity. For many fans, running track aside, this will
make the almost new, only one previous owner Olympic Stadium a gimme. An
absolute no brainer.

We move out of the existing stadium and move into a purpose built state of
the art stadium, with all the amenities.

So here's question number one.

The Olympic Stadium will hold what? About 80,000 seats as it exists.
However, only 25,000, over 10,000 seats less than current capacity, will be
permanent seating. The rest, 55,000 can be dismantled. Can, of course being
the operative word. Now, I don't believe anyone thinks we can fill that in
the first few seasons, so we'll possibly want to reduce the capacity. But by
how much and how? Remove a tier? Two tiers?

Why would we want to reduce the capacity at all?

Well, for me, supply and demand. Arsenal in the old Arsenal Stadium at
Highbury had a capacity of 38,500 or there about. They had a significant
season ticket waiting list, which I'm lead to believe was around 7 years.
Suffice to say their official site boasts around 40000 people even now some
years after moving to the Emirates, which holds 60355, so that is possibly
not an idle boast. Yet Arsenal soldiered on at the old stadium for 15 years
in the premiership, with a capacity of only 2,000 more than us. And they've
been winning things. League titles, cups, Champions League/European Cup
competition pretty most years during that time. This has been done on the
back of prudent financial management and having the same coach for a decade.
It's created a demand that's not just better than supply, but out stripped
it beyond anything we may dream of in the next five to ten years.

We on the other hand have had one cup final and one relegation and one
promotion and I believe sold fewer season tickets this year than last. We
certainly no longer have a waiting list.

For me, this is the wrong opportunity at the wrong time. I'm not saying we
have to be matching Arsenal, but certainly that precedent should be a
consideration if we're to come anywhere near our aspirations.

As things stand at present, we're struggling to fill our current capacity.
We're changing managers every 2 and a bit seasons although that average
could drop if Grant gets the push, which, in my opinion is still a
possibility, even if it's at the end of the season. We're apparently
£100,000,000 in debt. We're still only part owned by Gold and Sullivan,
albeit the lions share – the other investors that they were talking to still
haven't appeared.

So for me, we're likely to be looking at a managed reduction in size.

So following on from that the next question is, how do we do this?

Looking again at supply and demand, we have to have a ground where tickets
are at a premium – not necessarily in price, but in availability. We're
currently in the semi final of a cup we've never won and there appears to be
concern in some quarters that we can't sell that out. People could possibly
turn up on the day. They already can for most matches, and the cutting of
match day tickets to a price below the price per game for season ticket
holders has as we've seen on these boards put some fans noses out of joint
which, combined with the consistency of the team, could actually adversely
affect season ticket sales in a negative way, unless we buy big.

Does this seem likely? We struggle to attract players where we are in the
league and apparently we haven't got a proverbial pot to piss in. Our most
attractive players to sell are the ones that might keep us in this league
(and I'm not even going to consider the consequences of being lumbered with
this white elephant if we don't survive).

So how do the board manage the supply and demand? Reduce the availability to
less than current capacity only to want to rebuild it if they get it right
later? Or will they just close off the other areas of the ground and
restrict seating artificially? I imagine it'll be expensive to maintain a
stadium with so many empty seats so restricting choice might make it cheaper
and more manageable. Obviously, we'd be a bit of a laughing stock if the top
tier or tiers were closed, but would removing the parts of the ground be
financially viable if we're only going to rebuild later?

There are a lot of other questions to ask, but I only really want to look at
one other issue here and that is the one of alternative usage and I think
this for me is a significant concern.

Whenever Wembley, for instance, is used for other events the pitch is a mess
but from what I've read this idea has been bandied about as a cash cow for
the club. Legacy sport aside, this could include Rugby, NFL or competing for
major gigs with the O2 just across the water. We've seen the effect that
this has on the national stadium in Internationals, the FA and League Cups
and the Charity Shield. It seems the days of playing on the baize so fondly
remember from the cup finals of our youths would be a thing of the past. We
could of course go back to those club pitches that each winter would take on
the demeanour of the Somme on a good day. Try playing the passing football
the West Ham way in a mire patch like that. That will attract players for
sure.

And then of course, there's the running track which I've already mentioned.
The Boleyn used to be a place that was so tight that when we fans were in
full flow opposition players hated playing there. It was intimidating. Even
if the board were to break their promise and remove the track, where would
they put seats? They apparently can't dig down because of the water table or
some other "geological" reason. If they were serious about retractable
seats, wouldn't this have needed to have been incorporated into the original
design? Where will they retract to? What sort of rake will they provide if
they're to be put in front of the existing bottom tier, which I'm assuming
like most stadia, will already be at or very close to ground level?

For me this whole thing feels more and more like part of a big practical
joke. It's a desperate but misguided attempt to demonstrate ambition but
it's putting the cart before the horse and whilst I do think things can and
hopefully will come good under Gold and Sullivan I have serious doubts about
this move and the effect it could have. It's a massive gamble.

I dearly want to be wrong.

People will argue about income streams, transport links and the like, but
for me this is all irrelevant if there's no one there to use them. Perhaps
we do need to move but not right now and not here.

Invest in bringing success on the pitch. Create a demand for tickets for all
games before providing seats for bums that don't turn up now.

This to me smacks of stories of bids to sign Ruud Van Nistleroy, Thierry
Henry, Ronaldhino and David Beckham, only on a much grander scale.

Hoffenheim's Demba Ba goes on strike to force through West Ham move

EXCLUSIVE : West Ham target Demba Ba went on strike yesterday in an effort
to force through a £6million move to Upton Park. The Senegal striker, 25,
shocked his Hoffenheim bosses, and could be fined, after confronting them
over their reluctance to negotiate with the London club. Hoffenheim managing
director Ernst Tanner ordered Ba to join him on a flight to La Manga, 24
hours after the rest of the squad travelled there for a winter training
camp. But he had to concede defeat, after the former Watford junior said he
was staying at home.

Tanner confirmed that Ba, who has scored 37 goals in 93 games for
Hoffenheim, had withdrawn his labour to try to force their hand over West
Ham's interest and warned he could be docked a fortnight's pay. In a sign
that the Bundesliga side are ready to get tough with the rebel, he added
that they may even explore ways of putting his career on hold for the two
and a half years left on his contract. 'Yes, it's true he has refused to go
to La Manga, even though we demanded he catch a flight and join up with his
teammates,' said the Hoffenheim boss. 'I have told him he will have to face
the consequences. It could be a fine or we could throw him out altogether
and make him see out his contract without playing.'

West Ham believe 6ft 2in Ba can help them continue their climb away from the
foot of the Barclays Premier League and approached Hoffenheim with a loan
request, with a view to a £6million permanent deal at the end of the season.
Although the German club's response was lukewarm, at best, Ba has
demonstrated his eagerness to join Avram Grant's side. His lawyer Ran Ronen
said: 'It does seem Demba could move, and he'd like it to be to the Premier
League. West Ham came up with a bid, but, at the moment, Hoffenheim do not
appear to be working on it.' Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is still hoping
to convince former England boss Peter Taylor to join him as No 2 at St
James' Park, despite his surprise U-turn. The Premier League giants and
Taylor's League Two side Bradford City had agreed a compensation package for
the former England Under 21 coach to become Pardew's assistant.
But Taylor said yesterday: 'I have a lot of respect for Alan and for
Newcastle, but I just really didn't want to break my commitment here at
Bradford.'
