Gabbidon back for battle
WHUFC.com
Having returned from injury, Danny Gabbidon is hoping to play his part still
this season
08.04.2010

Danny Gabbidon is delighted to be back in action for West Ham United and is
hoping to help the club's push for Barclays Premier League survival. The
centre-back was a late substitute in last weekend's 2-2 draw against Everton
and is hopeful he is over the hamstring troubles he has suffered of late.
Gabbidon had been out of action since the 4-1 defeat at Chelsea in February
when he played at right-back, and that itself was his only other appearance
so far in 2010. Having had a brief taste of the action, Gabbidon was
delighted to be able to be back around the squad this week preparing for
Sunderland on Saturday - especially given the mood post-match after Ilan's
equaliser at Goodison. "It felt like a win," he said. "It has been a long
time since I have seen the boys smiling after a game. "We played really well
considering the pressure and the situation we were in. We can't rest on it
and we have to carry that on this Saturday. Hopefully that has given us a
bit of the extra confidence. "Sunderland are doing well and are on a good
run. We know they are not going to give us the points. We have to give them
a good game, like we did against Everton. Every game is a cup final and but
if we play how we did on Sunday we will get the right result."
Having been sat on the Goodison bench for most of Sunday's contest, Gabbidon
had a good view of the travelling support. He was struck by the passion on
show but certainly not surprised. "The fans have been great all season. They
know we have been in this predicament for a while now but they haven't
stopped. "I know it is frustrating and the home form hasn't been great but
they still keep coming to watch us. Hopefully we will give them something to
shout about and they will turn out again on Saturday. If we put in a
performance the fans will have nothing to grumble about. I know they will be
right behind us."

Hammers to host Galaxy
WHUFC.com
West Ham United will take on two Academy sides from MLS club LA Galaxy on
Saturday
08.04.2010

West Ham United will host two Academy sides from MLS club LA Galaxy at
Little Heath this Saturday morning. With the Hammers not returning to FA
Premier Academy League action until 17 April, Tony Carr will field Under-16
and Under-17 sides against the touring Americans. The Galaxy, whose first
team features the likes of David Beckham and Landon Donovan, have been in
England since last Saturday, watching West Ham's 2-2 Barclays Premier League
draw at Everton on Sunday before taking on the Blackburn Rovers, Manchester
City and Ipswich Town Academy sides.

Following Saturday's games, the young tourists will head for Wembley for the
FA Cup semi-final between Aston Villa and Chelsea. Academy Director Tony
Carr, who has recently returned from leading a West Ham U17 side to victory
at the International Amateur Soccer Tournament - The Challenge for the
Tiffany Trophy Cup in Washington D.C., is looking forward to taking on
American opposition again. "We took on D.C. United twice and Annandale
United while we were in the United States, so this will be our fourth
meeting with American opposition in the past few weeks," Carr confirmed. "We
were recently visited by some coaches from our partner clubs in North
America as part of our International Academy scheme. They came to watch us
train and learn from our methods and ask questions. Obviously, we give them
the technical ins and outs, and it's been quite a fruitful relationship over
the last couple of years. It's certainly been worthwhile from West Ham's
point of view. "We've got a few Academy league fixtures left to play, but
we're without a game this weekend, so we're playing LA Galaxy in two
friendly matches. If any of the fans want to come down before the Sunderland
game, then we'd love to see them at Little Heath. "After that, we go to MK
Dons the following Saturday and hope we can continue our unbeaten run and
also get back to winning ways after drawing 1-1 in each of our last three
matches."

Kick-off on Saturday is at 11am, with admission and parking both free of
charge.

Dowie - No mixed emotions
Tigers boss' loyalties lie firmly at the KC Stadium
By Carla Hilton Last updated: 8th April 2010
SSN

Hull City boss Iain Dowie insists he would not have mixed emotions should
the Tigers increase former club West Ham's plight by beating Burnley on
Saturday. The clash at the KC Stadium has been labelled as 'colossal' as far
as the fight for survival is concerned. Hull take on second-bottom Burnley
knowing that a win could take them out of the bottom three should the
Hammers slip up against Sunderland. Dowie's side are only a point behind his
former club and boast a game in hand in what is a turning out to be a
ding-dong battle at the bottom end of the table. The Tigers boss scored 13
goals in 81 appearances for his boyhood club but there is little doubt where
his loyalties now lie. "Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to keep
Hull in the Premier League - that would be a fantastic achievement," said
Dowie. "Whoever else goes down, I don't care. "Would it be fantastic if we
stayed up and West Ham stayed up? Great. "That's probably unlikely, but
let's deal with what we've got to deal with first."
Hull will fancy their chances against the lowly Clarets who were not only
thumped by Manchester City 6-1 last time, but they are yet to win a single
away game this season. "We've got to take care of business on Saturday,"
added Dowie. "I understand how colossal a game it is, not just for the club
but for the city of Hull. "If we were to win this game it would give us huge
impetus. "We do have that extra game in the bag and it would put things in
our control, which would be very nice." Meanwhile, Dowie is hopeful George
Boateng will have recovered from concussion in time to feature on Saturday.
"He was in this morning, bright smile on his face, little bit sore, little
bit groggy," said the Tigers boss. "Are we hopeful? Yes we are. "Would I say
he was going to play? I would say 55% no, 45% yes. It will go to the wire."

Bent ready to nail Hammers
The Sun
Published: 08 Apr 2010

DARREN BENT has warned West Ham he has gold in his sights as he heads to
Upton Park. The striker is enjoying a prolific first season at Sunderland,
smashing 23 goals so far — with 22 of those in the Premier League. That
leaves him just four behind Wayne Rooney and three behind Didier Drogba in
the race for the top-flight's Golden Boot. Bent, 26, would have been even
closer had he not missed two penalties against his former club Tottenham
last weekend. But rather than dwell on that, he is determined to push Rooney
and Drogba all the way over the final five games — starting with the
relegation-threatened Hammers. Bent said: "The one thing that disappointed
me about last weekend was the missed penalties because if I'd scored them,
I'd have been right in the mix with Rooney and Drogba. "But I was happy to
get two goals in a great win for us and it is definitely still a motivation
for me to finish as the top scorer. "If you can do that in this league, then
you have made your mark. "If it doesn't happen, then it wasn't meant to be.
There are only five games left for me to get enough goals, but as long as I
keep going, then I will give it a go. "We have some winnable games, we are
in form and the way the team is creating chances, I feel I can score in
every game."
Bent snubbed West Ham to join Spurs in 2007 and knows an early goal for the
Wearsiders would pile the pressure on Gianfanco Zola's strugglers. He added:
"Zola is a popular man and it seems the players are 100 per cent behind him.
"But their crowd can turn very quickly, so if we can start well and
hopefully get in front, we can make it difficult.
"The good thing is that West Ham and any Zola side will want to play
football. "It's not like we're going to a Stoke or Blackburn where there's
not really much football. "It should be a very good game."

Hammers halted in bid for new investment
Published 22:45 08/04/10 By James Nursey
The Mirror

West Ham chairman David Sullivan's drive for fresh investment from the
Middle East has been halted by the club's dire Premier League position.
Sullivan and fellow ex-Birmingham owner David Gold bought a controlling 50
per cent stake in West Ham in January. But they want to find new backers to
take up the rest of the club's shares - held by failed Icelandic investment
bank Straumur. The Hammers have debts of £95million after an ill-advised
spending spree under the Icelanders. And Sullivan and West Ham vice-chairman
Karren Brady visited Dubai last week to hold talks with new potential
investors. But with the Hammers languishing 17th in the top-flight there
were no firm takers. The billionaires and millionaires Sullivan has targeted
intend to wait and see what division the club are in next season before
committing. It is another blow for Sullivan after MirrorFootball revealed
Birmingham's new owner Carson Yeung put in a £5m writ on Wednesday at the
High Court against City's former regime over the finances at St Andrews.

KEV'S KEEN FOR CHARITY REUNION
Posted on: Fri 09 Apr 2010
www.wycombewanderers.co.uk

Former Wanderer Kevin Keen says he cannot wait to return to Adams Park for
next week's charity match in memory of his father Mike, who lost his battle
with cancer at the age of 69 almost exactly one year ago. The Mike Keen
Charity Cup takes place on Thursday 15th April (k.o. 7.45pm) and will
feature a whole host of Wycombe legends, as well as famous Premier League
names such as Gianfranco Zola and Teddy Sheringham. Mike managed the
Wanderers - his hometown club - from 1980 until 1984 and also owned two
sports shops in the town centre, but sadly passed away last April after a
short battle with cancer. And speaking to the club's official matchday
programme, 'Quarters', son Kevin - who started his playing career with the
Chairboys - said: "It's great that so many famous players have agreed to
turn out in memory of my dad. "He was very proud of his roots in High
Wycombe where he was born and bred, got married and lived all his life. He
would have loved a night like this. "I'd like to thank Steve Hayes and the
board of Wycombe Wanderers for all their help in arranging this game. My dad
always wanted football to be fun, skilful and entertaining and I hope that
next Thursday's game will be all of those things," he added.
Current Blues boss Gary Waddock is among a host of past and present managers
who will be turning out for the All Stars XI. They include Brighton's Gus
Poyet (ex-Chelsea and Spurs), Southampton's Alan Pardew (Crystal Palace and
Charlton), Charlton's Phil Parkinson (Reading) and Watford's Malky Mackay
(Norwich and West Ham). The famous football family of Allen's will be well
represented with Clive (ex-Spurs), Paul (West Ham and Spurs) and Martin
(West Ham). Defender Steve Clarke joins the list of ex-Chelsea stars who
have promised to play and former Wycombe midfielder Rob Lee will be
returning to Adams Park for the game. However - with due respect to the
legends in the All Stars XI - the biggest cheers of the night will be
reserved for the opposition, an ex-Wanderers XI packed with some of the
greatest names in Wycombe's history.

Many of the stars from the Martin O'Neill era will be in action including
Keith Ryan, Steve Brown, Simon Garner, Matt Crossley, Glyn Creaser, Simon
Stapleton and Steve Thompson. Goalscoring legends Mark West and Tommy Mooney
will be pulling on the famous blue quarters once again and the goalkeeping
duties will be shared by Paul Hyde and Chuck Moussadik.

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £1 for concessions, and can be purchased
from the Adams Park ticket office on 01494 441118. All proceeds from the
match will be donated to Cancer Research UK.

The full squads are as follows:

Wanderers: Matt Crossley, Mark West, Steve Thompson, Simon Stapleton, Glyn
Creaser, Paul Hyde, Keith Ryan, Steve Brown, Simon Garner, Tommy Mooney,
Stuart Cash, Steve Whitby, Mo Harkin, Andy Baird, Chuck Moussadik

All Stars XI: Gianfranco Zola, Teddy Sheringham, Gus Poyet, Gary Waddock,
Malky Mackay, Steve Clarke, Alan Pardew, Martin Allen, Clive Allen, Paul
Allen, Rob Lee, Phil Parkinson, Tim Breacker, Alec Chamberlain, David

West Ham United defender Danny Gabbidon: Every game is a cup final for us
Welshman wants to give fans "something to shout about" on Saturday
By Alex Stamp
8 Apr 2010 23:27:00
Goal.com

West Ham United defender Danny Gabbidon has admitted that every game is "a
cup final" for his team as they look to pull away from Premier League
relegation. The Welsh international made his comeback in Sunday's 2-2 draw
against Everton when he was introduced as a late substitute, which was his
first appearance for the club since a 4-1 defeat at Chelsea on March 13.
West Ham snatched a point at Goodison Park courtesy of a late header from
Ilan, and Gabbidon revealed that the team felt they had earned a win as a
result. "It felt like a win, it has been a long time since I have seen the
boys smiling after a game," he told the club's official website "We played
really well considering the pressure and the situation we were in. We can't
rest on it and we have to carry that on this Saturday. Hopefully that has
given us a bit of the extra confidence." The Hammers now face Sunderland,
who are in good form after beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 last weekend, and
Gabbidon admitted that every game is like a cup final for the team.
"Sunderland are doing well and are on a good run," he said. "We know they
are not going to give us the points. We have to give them a good game, like
we did against Everton. "Every game is a cup final and but if we play how we
did on Sunday we will get the right result." Gabbidon revealed his
admiration for the support which the West Ham fans have given their team
throughout the season, and he admitted that the team were looking to give
them something to shout about this weekend. "The fans have been great all
season. They know we have been in this predicament for a while now but they
haven't stopped," he said. "I know it is frustrating and the home form
hasn't been great but they still keep coming to watch us. Hopefully we will
give them something to shout about and they will turn out again on Saturday.
"If we put in a performance the fans will have nothing to grumble about. I
know they will be right behind us."

Bruce: West Ham tough to beat
Sunderland Echo
Published Date: 08 April 2010

Steve Bruce says West Ham striker Ilan's equaliser at Everton last weekend
has made Sunderland's task doubly difficult at Upton Park on Saturday. Bruce
watched the Hammers trailing 2-1 in the dying minutes at Goodison Park and
felt that this weekend might be the perfect time to play Gianfranco Zola's
beleaguered side. But then up popped the 29-year-old Brazilian striker with
a brilliant diving header in the 87th minute to completely change the
dynamics of the battle at the bottom. That point prevented West Ham dropping
into the bottom three and Bruce reckons it will have re-energised a side in
danger of sinking without trace. He told the Echo: "It's no secret that West
Ham have been on a dreadful run. "They'd lost six games on the trot going
into the Everton game and were just a couple of minutes away from it being
seven. "But that late equaliser, and the point gained, is absolutely massive
for them. "It stops the rot. "It avoids the psychological damage of dropping
into the bottom three and it means they'll be a much tougher prospect
against us. "Even the most resilient teams suffer if they have a string of
defeats and had West Ham lost seven in a row they would have been much more
fragile. "If we'd started well against them, we might have hoped to see them
crumble a little, lose any confidence they had. "But that point gives them
something to cling on to. It guarantees they'll have taken heart and that
they'll be looking to this weekend to get a run of avoiding defeat going."
The Sunderland manager knows that his opponents will see this as something
of a "must-win" game. "I think they'll have targeted the Sunderland match as
one they've got to win," he said. "They've got a couple of very difficult
fixtures in their remaining games so they'll be looking to ours as one to
win, especially with our poor away record. "But this is a match that we've
got to look do well in ourselves. "We've had an excellent record on the
quiet recently – we've only lost to Arsenal and Liverpool in 11 games – and
I'd love us to do something about our poor away record over the next few
games. "It would be great to think we might get our second away win of the
season this weekend, but we know it will be tough

SAFC boss Bruce in fear of Hammer horror
Apr 8 2010 by Stuart Rayner, Evening Chronicle

Now West Ham United have "stopped the rot" they will be targeting three
points against Sunderland on Saturday, Steve Bruce has warned. The
relegation-threatened Hammers ended a run of six straight defeats with
Ilan's 87th-minute equaliser at Everton on Sunday. And that, says Bruce,
makes them a much tougher prospect this weekend. "It's no secret West Ham
have been on a dreadful run," he said. "They'd lost six games on the trot
going into the Everton game and were just a couple of minutes away from it
being seven. "But that late equaliser is absolutely massive for them. It
stops the rot. "It avoids the psychological damage of dropping into the
bottom three and means they'll be a much tougher prospect against us."If
we'd started well against them this Saturday, we might have hoped to see
them crumble a little. "But that point gives them something to cling on to.
It guarantees they'll have taken heart."
The Hammers are on 28 points – one more than third-bottom Hull City – and
with just five games left, will be looking for the points to keep them safe.
Gianfranco Zola will be hoping to make the most of home advantage against a
Black Cats side who have not won a Premier League away game since the
opening day of the season. "I think they'll have targeted the Sunderland
match as one they've got to win," he said. "They've got a couple of very
difficult fixtures in their remaining games so they'll be looking to ours,
especially with our away record. "But we've had an excellent record on the
quiet recently – we've only lost to Arsenal and Liverpool in 11 games – and
I'd love us to do something about our poor away record over the next few
games."

Birmingham owners to make compensation claim against former owner David
Sullivan
Birmingham City's owners have returned to the High Court just days after
being ordered to pay £2.2 million to the investment bank Seymour Pierce in
unpaid advisory fees, with their own compensation claim against former owner
David Sullivan. The West Ham chairman has responded with a promise to
counter-sue for "several million" in unpaid expenses.
Telegraph.co.uk

Published: 2:11PM BST 08 Apr 2010

Grandtop International Holdings, the investment vehicle used by Hong Kong
businessman Carson Yeung to purchase the club, was last week sued by the
London-based investment bank and stockbrokers Seymour Pierce over an unpaid
advisory "success fee" based on an agreement made in 2007 when the bank was
appointed to advise Grandtop on buying the football club. According to Vico
Hui, the Birmingham City chairman and the chief executive of Grandtop - now
known as Birmingham International Holdings - the company will appeal the
decision, but first they will return to the High Court in an attempt to gain
compensation in excess of £5 million for the state of the finances they
inherited from Sullivan after their takeover in October. Sales kick off as
clubs feel the pinchTheir writ, which was filed on Tuesday at the Royal
Courts of Justice, amounts to the first genuine salvo of what has until now
been only a verbal conflict, which began when Yeung initiated an
investigation into the club's finances which discovered that Sullivan and
Gold had paid themselves £420,000 in management fees for the year ahead
before departing. Yeung and his advisors rejected Sullivan's and Gold's
offer to refund the fees. However, Birmingham's legal action will not be
taken lying down. Sullivan has already announced his intention to return
fire by counter-suing for "several million" in unclaimed expenses. He
explained: "Unfortunately as they started it we'll be issuing writs
ourselves. We'll be counter-suing for several million. I don't think it is
right for people in football to sue each other as it is not good for either
club. Right from the start we tried to find a way to resolve this amicably.
Now the only gainers will be the lawyers."

Ferdinand pledges a 'professional job' against Hammers
BBC.co.uk

Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand has said he is adamant there will be no
sentiment for former club West Ham United in Saturday's encounter. The
Hammers are in danger of relegation this season but Ferdinand says there
will be no mercy for his boyhood team. "I am a professional, I'm going
there to do a job. West Ham fans understand that," Ferdinand told BBC
Newcastle. "The Sunderland fans are travelling there in vast numbers and I
owe it to them to play my heart out." Ferdinand began his career with the
East London club, making 163 appearances in all competitions having made his
full debut for the club against Preston in August 2003. Gianfranco Zola's
West Ham side are a point above the relegation places with just five games
to play, but Hull City who lie a place below them have a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Sunderland's own hopes of avoiding the drop were handed a huge
boost with last weekend's 3-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of
Light. The Black Cats have an 11-point gap between themselves and the bottom
three in the Premier League. Ferdinand, who has endured relegation before
with West Ham, believes no player can relax until safety is mathematically
secured, and is eyeing a positive end to a mixed campaign at the Stadium of
Light. "You're not safe until the points say you are, until the three teams
have that R next to their name, but the good thing is we're looking upwards
and not downwards at the moment," Ferdinand added. "We need to make sure we
finish the season strongly and if we do, then it's been a good season
considering the bad period we had."

History lesson for Green
WHUFC.com
The England No1 is hoping echoes of the 2006/07 run-in can inspire the
Hammers
07.04.2010

Robert Green believes the club can look to the memory of three years ago
when looking to avoid the drop this time around. Towards the end of the
2006/07 season, the Hammers came from behind to get a 2-1 win at Blackburn
Rovers and it proved the spark for the successful survival fight. Green was
between the posts on that day and he saw similarities as the team battled
back to get a creditable 2-2 draw at Everton on Sunday. "A few seasons ago
up at Blackburn we were in a relegation fight," Green recalled of a game
which was match number four of a current run of 121 unbroken appearances in
the league. "We scored a penalty, a goal that perhaps wasn't deemed a goal,
won 2-1 and turned our season around and went on from there. "On Sunday, we
battled and showed our fighting spirit to come back from adversity twice in
the space of 90 minutes. That gives us a good step to go on with. To concede
the two goals was disappointing, those moments sum up the sort of season we
are having, but we didn't give up. We have come away with something."
The England No1 said the performance from the whole side in preventing
Everton from dominating matches at home as they had in recent weeks
underlined the quality and courage in the ranks. "It showed what we can do.
We had the right application that shone through. "We have learned lessons
from recent games. We desperately want to do well for the manager, for the
fans, for the club - for everyone connected with West Ham. This is a point
in the right direction for us and we can use this as a way forward for all
the games we have left."

Republic debut for Kearns

Danny Kearns made his bow for Republic of Ireland's U19s in a friendly win
over Poland
07.04.2010

Danny Kearns made his debut for the Republic of Ireland Under-19 side in a
thrilling 4-2 victory over Poland. The 18-year-old West Ham United
midfielder replaced Wexford Youths forward Jimmy Keohane with 27 minutes
remaining with the Irish leading 1-0. However, the closing stages were full
of goalmouth activity at Tolka Park in Dublin, with five goals being scored
in the final 26 minutes of play. Ireland went 3-0 up within four minutes of
Kearns' arrival, only for Poland to pull a goal back with 19 minutes to go.
The hosts added a fourth with ten minutes remaining before the visitors
completed the scoring in added-time. Sean McCaffrey's side will host the
same opposition at Tolka Park on Thursday evening, when Belfast-born Kearns
will hope to make his first start since switching allegiance from Northern
Ireland earlier this year.

Valon Behrami took time out to help back the latest fundraising initiative
for Richard House
07.04.2010

West Ham United are backing Richard House Children's Hospice campaign to Get
Fit, Have Fun and Raise Money for London's First Children's Hospice. Hammers
midfielder Valon Behrami helped to kick off the hospice's latest fundraising
initiative by attending a special event at Canary Wharf. The Swiss
international encouraged workers and shoppers at the centre to take on
Richard House's active challenges as part of their 10th anniversary. The
challenges include a landmark 10 Bridge walk in London, a 24 peaks trek and
the London to Bruges cycle ride. Behrami said: "Richard House Children's
Hospice is part of the community. Being a club charity, the hospice is close
to the hearts of everyone here at West Ham and I'm delighted to add my
support. "Richard House makes a huge difference to the children and families
that use their services and many people can take part in events and support
them, so that they can carry on this good work. "It doesn't matter what
level of fitness you have, you can walk, run, anything that suits you. It
will all be for a good cause as well."
Richard House is hosting a number of challenges and the hospice's
fundraising manager, Michelle Finn, added: "With the summer coming up we all
want to get fitter and healthier. These activities are a great way to get
motivated, have fun, make some amazing memories and ultimately help to
benefit the children and the families who use the services of the hospice."
Richard House Children's Hospice provides care free of charge to children
with life-limiting, life-threatening and complex healthcare conditions and
their families from across London and the Home Counties. To be able to
continue to provide this vital service Richard House needs to raise £3.1m a
year, so by taking part and getting involved you can help contribute and

Noble - No Hammers split
Midfielder insists Zola's squad are united
Last updated: 7th April 2010

Mark Noble has rejected suggestions of a dressing room divide at West Ham as
Gianfranco Zola's side battle to preserve their Premier League status. The
Hammers snapped their miserable six-game losing run with a battling point
away to Everton on Sunday but are just one point above third from bottom
Hull City, who have the benefit of a game in hand. A very public spat
between co-owner David Sullivan and manager Zola in the wake of the dismal
home defeat by Wolves suggested all was not well at Upton Park. But
midfielder Noble insists the squad are united in their desire to drag the
East London club away from their currently perilous position. "None of us
want to be in this situation, we are proud of who and what we play for. We
know what we have to do for the rest of the season," Noble said on the
club's official website. "We have got a bit of spirit. [The point at
Everton] shows we can come back. "We are a group. We are one changing room.
Everyone is positive. We all get on well and it is not a split camp. "We are
a team and it is the team that is going to get us out of trouble. "We have
really shown what we can do. The boys are happy, the manager is happy but we
have got another home game coming up and we have to win that."
West Ham welcome Sunderland to Upton Park at the weekend and must also
tackle UEFA Champions League hopefuls Liverpool and Manchester City in the
closing weeks of the season. "We want three points and then to go to
Liverpool and give them a tough game," Noble added. "We know that Anfield is
a tough place, but we got a point there last year and can do it again."

Palermo admit Behrami liking
Italians still interested in Hammers ace
By Simone Bargellini Last updated: 7th April 2010
SSN

Serie A outfit Palermo admit they are keen on Valon Behrami but insist no
transfer talks have been held. The Italians were strongly linked with the
West Ham midfielder in January, with tentative approaches made. The Hammers
made it clear they were unwilling to do business, though, and that situation
is unlikely to have changed. The Premier League strugglers have endured
grave financial difficulties this season, and may need to sell in the
summer, but they are reluctant to part with their prized assets. Palermo
accept as much, despite being keen to bring former Lazio ace Behrami back to
Italy, and accept there is little chance of landing the Switzerland
international unless West Ham alter their stance. "I understand that the
British press are keen to report the Palermo interest in Behrami, because of
the contacts made in January, but at present there is no open discussion,"
Palermo's sporting director Walter Sabatini told TRM. "Behrami is a player
we like, I like him very much. "Our coach (former Lazio boss Delio Rossi)
knows him well, as he helped him to grow, and he also likes him. "At the
moment there is nothing, in the sense that nothing is concrete, but Behrami
is a player we like."

Noble: Hammers stand United
The Sun
Published: 07 Apr 2010

MARK NOBLE insists the West Ham dressing room has the spirit required to
beat the drop. The Hammers stopped a run of six straight defeats with a
battling 2-2 draw at Everton last weekend, but remain just a point clear of
third-bottom Hull, who have a game in hand. Sunderland are at Upton Park on
Saturday in a game which under-pressure manager Gianfranco Zola knows his
side cannot afford to lose. But midfielder Noble insists the Irons have the
right focus to secure their place in the top flight. He said: "None of us
want to be in this situation, we are proud of who and what we play for. "We
know what we have to do for the rest of the season, we have got a bit of
spirit. "We are a group. We are one changing room. Everyone is positive. We

Birmingham spark high court war with West Ham for £5million compensation -
exclusive
Published 23:00 07/04/10 By James Nursey
The Mirror

David Sullivan's woes at West Ham are mounting after Birmingham owner Carson
Yeung sparked a High Court battle for £5million compensation. Hong Kong
tycoon Yeung is unhappy with Premier League City's finances after completing
an £80million takeover last October. Yeung gained control of St Andrews from
Sullivan and Gold, who later bought a controlling stake in West Ham in
January. But Yeung was shocked to inherit bills and liabilities totalling
around £11million - including outgoing MD Karren Brady's package of perks
and bonuses. And he was also furious after discovering Sullivan and Gold
took out £420,000 in management fees for 2010 before leaving. Sullivan and
Gold were given a chance to settle out of court but refused despite offering
to refund the management fees. So Yeung yesterday slapped in a series of
writs at the High Court as he believes he paid too much at £1 a share for
City given the club posted a recent £20million loss. But Sullivan is
counter-suing for around £2million worth of unclaimed expenses from his
reign and insists City officials have libelled his old regime. Sullivan told
Mirror Sport last night: "Unfortunately as they started it we'll be issuing
writs ourselves. "We'll be counter-suing for several million. "I don't think
it is right for people in football to sue each other as it is not good for
either club. "Right from the start we tried to find a way to resolve this
amicably.
"Now the only gainers will be the lawyers."
Sullivan already has plenty of worries at cash-strapped West Ham who are
17th in the Premier League. The Hammers have debts of around £95million and
face meltdown if they are relegated. Sullivan has already been criticised by
some supporters for publicly rebuking the team and under-pressure boss
Gianfranco Zola. But the club ended a run of six successive defeats with a
gritty draw at Everton last weekend.

Behrami set for Parker place in Hammers vital clash
Newham Recorder
07 April 2010

WEST HAM midfielder Valon Behrami is set to shoulder the responsibility of
replacing Scott Parker against Sunderland on Saturday. The Swiss
international limped out of the warm-up at Everton on Sunday, but he should
be fit to return and play alongside Radoslav Kovac in the middle of the
park. Parker will sit out the Sunderland ga-me, as well as the trip to
Anfield on April 19, after collecting his 10th booking at Goodison Park on
Saturday. While Behrami should be fit, for the other absentees, there is
less chance of a return for Satur-day's vital Premier League clash.
Alessandro Diam-anti is still suffering from a groin strain and is rated as
only 50/50, while the best Guillermo Franco can hope for is likely to be a
place on the bench as he continues to struggle with his infected foot. As
for Herita Ilunga and Kieron Dyer, it appears that Saturday's game will come
too soon for both of them. With Hull taking on Burnley, this could be a make
or break weekend.

Daily WHUFC News -

Noble faith in team
WHUFC.com
The club's longest-serving player said there is a real togetherness in the
ranks
07.04.2010

Mark Noble has spoken of the togetherness in the West Ham United camp and
said each and every player is firmly committed to securing safety. The
Hammers showed their commitment last weekend by twice coming from behind to
earn a 2-2 draw at an Everton side that had won their previous seven home
fixtures. The midfielder played a part in the comeback, hitting the bar just
before his corner led to Manuel da Costa's equaliser before being involved
in the move when Ilan came up with a late point-saving header.

Noble, the club's longest serving player, believed the determination shown
to battle back for a precious point would stand them in good stead for the
final five matches - starting with Sunderland's visit this Saturday. He
said: "None of us want to be in this situation, we are proud of who and what
we play for. We know what we have to do for the rest of the season.

In response to claims in certain quarters that the team are not up for the
fight, Noble said: "We have got a bit of spirit. [The point at Everton]
shows we can come back. We are a group. We are one changing room and we are
not split at all. "Everyone is positive. We all get on well and it is not a
split camp. Manu has come in and scored and done fantastic. Ilan has not
played much football and he scored the equalising goal. You saw how we all
celebrated together. We are a team and it is the team that is going to get
us out of trouble."

It is not just the team that are playing their part, with Noble lost for
words to describe the travelling support. "The fans were unbelievable, even
when we were 1-0 down we still heard them singing. That was fantastic and
that is what we are going to need for the rest of the season. They stuck by
us and probably a bit of help from them gets us the last equalising goal.

"We have really shown what we can do. The boys are happy, the manager is
happy but we have got another home game coming up and we have to win that.
We want three points and then to go to Liverpool and give them a tough game.
We know that Anfield is a tough place but we got a point there last year and
can do it again."

Dyer delighted with youngsters
WHUFC.com
Alex Dyer was proud of his young reserve team following Tuesday's goalless
draw at Stoke City
06.04.2010

Alex Dyer was delighted with his young side after they dominated their
goalless Barclays Premier Reserve League South draw at Stoke City on
Tuesday. Dyer's West Ham United side contained four Academy scholars and
five first-year professionals, but more than matched their hosts - who
included five Barclays Premier League regulars - at Nantwich Town's Weaver
Stadium. Olly Lee twice went close to scoring the only goal of the game,
while goalkeeper Marek Stech, wing-backs Callum Driver and Davide Ferrari,
centre-backs Sergio Sanchez, Jordan Spence and Callum McNaughton and
midfielders Josh Payne and Anthony Edgar all impressed. Dyer, who employed
the 3-5-2 formation that worked so well in last month's 2-0 win at Arsenal,
was pleased with the performance of every single player in a West Ham shirt.
With two fixtures remaining - at Wolverhampton Wanderers next Tuesday and
home to Fulham on 27 April - the manager is looking for a strong finish to
the campaign. "I am really pleased with the level of consistency that we've
found in recent games. It is something that we try to stress to all of them
throughout the club. It is important that they give 100 per cent for the
football club, 100 per cent for themselves and 100 per cent for each other
in every game they play. "We've tried to get a nice unit together that
trains together and is around each other all the time. It shows that we
spend a lot of time together and we'd like to keep them together for the
rest of the season. "Hopefully, next season, they can continue to improve
and we'll see some of them graduate to the first team."
For a variety of reasons, Dyer was proud of both the attitude and
performance of his young team against a Potters side including England
striker James Beattie, Senegal midfielder Amdy Faye, Bosnia goalkeeper Asmir
Begovic, Danny Pugh and Andrew Davies. "There were some really good
performances from the young lads. Callum Driver was excellent all night - he
delivered some good crosses and got up and down really well all night. His
overall performance was very good. "Sergio Sanchez was very good, as well.
He reads the game well and looks like he has played a lot of games in the
reserves, when this was his second full game. Big Callum McNaughton played
his first game at Stoke and his performance was excellent. "Jordan Spence
again put in another good performance for the reserves and deserves to
travel with the first team because he conducts himself so well, while Davide
Ferrari was brilliant. It was Davide's last game for the club because he is
going back to Italy, but he worked forward well and got back in when he
needed to. It was a good performance from the lad. "We played three in
midfield and I want to stress that Josh was excellent again. In the last
four-or-five games, he has upped his game and looked like the player we knew
he could be. As long as he finishes the season off well, it will hold him in
good stead for the future. "Alongside Josh, it was good to see Olly back to
his old self, getting on the end of things, working up and down and getting
himself into the opposition box. Anthony Edgar got better as the game went
on and he has got quality. He needs to work on some things, including his
temperament, but he played well."

Stoke City 0-0 Reserves
WHUFC.com
West Ham United enjoyed the better of a lively goalless draw at Nantwich
Town's Weaver Stadium
06.04.2010

Stoke City reserves v West Ham United reserves
Barclays Premier Reserve League South
Weaver Stadium, Nantwich Town FC
Tuesday 6 April 2010
Kick-off: 7pm

Full-time score - Stoke City reserves 0-0 West Ham United reserves

91 mins - Subuola stabs the ball away from the corner. Pugh picks it up and
shoots from 30 yards, but McNaughton blocks with his head. Seconds later,
the full-time whistle is blown and that's it. West Ham will be pleased with
a point and a clean sheet, but they could easily have won this game. Lee, in
particular, missed a couple of great chances. All in all, though, that is
another positive result for the Hammers. Dyer and his players will head to
Telford a week from now to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final
away league game before hosting Fulham in their final fixture on 27 April.
Remember to keep a close eye on whufc.com for exclusive reaction from
tonight's game.

90 mins - Stoke win a late free-kick wide on the right. Aside from Abdulla,
every West Ham player is inside the penalty area. We're into the only minute
of added-time as Pugh curls the ball over and Stech turns it over his own
crossbar.

89 mins - Aaargh! Edgar does absolutely brilliantly to turn away from two
Stoke defenders close to the left touchline. He scampers to the edge of the
box before clipping a cross to the back post. The unmarked Lee tries to
sidefoot the ball past Begovic from about eight yards, but the goalkeeper
makes a fine stop with his feet. Stoke eventually scramble the ball clear.

88 mins - Moult again! Payne loses possession to Lund, who finds the Academy
graduate about 20 yards out. His snap-shot appears destined for the top
corner before Stech sticks out his massive hands and plucks the ball out of
the air. Stoke make a change, with Andy Nicholls on for Mitchell.

85 mins - Full marks to Stephen Pressley, who obviously isn't a Messi fan.
He's still here watching as Stoke force a throw-in deep in West Ham
territory. Edgar and Payne combine and the Hammers clear the danger.

84 mins - Montano gets a rest, with Subuola replacing him up front.

83 mins - Moult again tries to kick-start Stoke's night, but his cross is
too close to Stech and the goalkeeper claims unchallenged. Seconds later,
the striker turns past Sanchez and Driver before forcing Stech into a smart
save low to his left.

80 mins - Moult brings the ball down and carries it forward, but Spence is
there to snuff out the danger when the youngster crosses into the penalty
area.

79 mins - Payne and Lee combine before the latter shoots powerfully from 25
yards, forcing Begovic to tip the ball out for a corner. Edgar delivers and
McNaughton wins it in the air at the far post. Abdulla tries to apply the
finishing touch but Begovic clings on.

77 mins - For anyone who is remotely interested, Lionel Messi has scored a
hat-trick and Barcelona are now beating Arsenal 3-1. I told you it would be
more entertaining to stick with me!

76 mins - Dyer does make a change, replacing Dixon with Ahmed Abdulla.

75 mins - Driver does brilliantly again, beating his man before finding
Dixon with a backheel. The forward tries to play the ball one side of
Macdonald and run around the other to retrieve it, only for Faye to get back
and muscle him off the ball before clearing with his left foot.

74 mins - Sanchez sends a good ball down the right channel for Driver to
chase. The Academy wing-back wins his initial challenge with Macdonald, only
for the ball to spin in the Stoke player's favour and he is able to clear.
Driver, Sanchez and McNaughton have been superb so far tonight.

72 mins - I'm not sure Alex Dyer will want to change things here, but Nicky
Barrett is out warming up along the touchline. The manager's only concern
may be that his young players will tire in the closing stages.

70 mins - West Ham are pushing hard for a winner, here. First, Begovic is
forced to tumble on to a Ferrari cross, then the goalkeeper is out quickly
to claim Edgar's attempted pass to Dixon.

69 mins - Close at the other end, this time. Payne crosses low to Montano,
who takes a touch and sees his shot loop just over the crossbar off
Macdonald. Edgar's corner is headed back to him, before his second cross
falls to Payne on the volley, but his powerful shot is blocked.

66 mins - Stoke go as close as they have gone all night. Beattie wins the
ball about 35 yards out and tees up Pugh, who strikes the bouncing ball
first-time from the left corner of the penalty area. The shot is well-struck
and Stech can only palm it out for a corner. The flag-kick comes to nothing
and West Ham clear.

65 mins - McNaughton doesn't get enough on his clearance and Lund is able to
find Cohen, who crosses, but Sanchez is there to clear before Payne belts
the ball upfield. A warning for Dyer's men, there.

64 mins - West Ham really need to score while they are on top. Driver is
involved again as he tees up Payne to cross deep to the back post, but the
centre is just too long for Ferrari, and the ball flies out of play off the
top of the Italian's head.

62 mins - That was a great, great chance. Dixon lays the ball off to Payne,
who waits before clipping a perfect ball over the Stoke defence to Lee. The
youngster has an age, but his first touch takes him a little bit wide and he
rather mis-hits his shot across the face of goal.

61 mins - I doubt any of you are bothered that Arsenal are drawing 1-1 in
Barcelona, but there you go. Back here at Nantwich, the Hammers are
controlling the game, with the back three of Spence, Sanchez and McNaughton
looking very solid.

59 mins - Sanchez takes a terrible free-kick and it hits Moult. He
mis-controls and Spence takes the ball off him before the striker fouls him.
The referee whistles and tells Moult he is on his 'final warning'. Yes, it
is that quiet here that I can hear what the referee is saying to the
players!

58 mins - Edgar's corner drops to McNaughton, but he just cannot get the
ball out from under his feet and his shot is blocked inside the six-yard
box. West Ham are well on top, here.

56 mins - Ferrari has penalty claims waved away. His cross hits a hand, but
the referee is adamant that it was accidental. The ball eventually goes out
for a corner.

54 mins - West Ham have started again well here after half-time. Josh Payne
is again looking lively. His pass to Montano leads to Lund conceding a
corner. Payne takes it himself short to Edgar, whose teasing cross is headed
away.

52 mins - Edgar breaks free down the left, drops his shoulder and
mis-controls the ball through to Begovic. Shame.

51 mins - Tony Pulis looks to have got a bit bored and gone home. The same
cannot be said of Falkirk manager Stephen Pressley, who is watching on
intently from his seat in the row in front of me.

48 mins - it is still not exactly bright here at Nantwich Town FC. Montano
breaks forward through the gloom and gets goal-side of Macdonald. He tries
to square to the unmarked Edgar, but the centre-back blocks his pass.

46 mins - Montano takes the ball from the kick-off and tries to slalom his
way through the Stoke defence, much like he did in a recent Academy league
game against Norwich City. This time, he is stopped in his tracks by Davies.

Welcome back to the Weaver Stadium, which I can now happily report is bathed
in a warm glow from the floodlights. West Ham will kick-off the second
half...

Half-time score - Stoke City reserves 0-0 West Ham United reserves

The floodlights are slowly coming back on again...

45 mins - Before Stech can take the goal kick, the referee blows for
half-time. We'll have to see if the floodlights can be turned back on in
time for the second 45 minutes. The 'M People' are back on the airwaves
again...

44 mins - The lights are slowly turning back on again in the stand, but the
floodlights are still off as Beattie's shot is deflected behind for another
corner. The ball is curled in and skims off Sanchez's head for another
flag-kick. Pugh's centre is too deep and flies out for a goal kick on the
far side.

42 mins - It is still light enough to play until half-time. Play resumes
with a Stoke free-kick, which is headed out for a corner. The ball is curled
in and headed clear at the near post by Lee.

We are reliably informed that the generator will 'take a few minutes to warm
back up' and then we'll be back underway again. We got a brief burst of 'M
People' on the tannoy, but that has gone off again now.

41 mins - We have just had a power cut! I am working on battery power, so
will keep you updated for as long as possible. The referee had just called
Anthony Edgar over for a talking too after the midfielder presumably spoke
out of turn. The floodlights have gone off...

40 mins - Hmmmm,,. Lee finds Montano with a lovely curling pass around
Macdonald. The defender appears to push the forward over as he reaches the
penalty area, but the referee waves away the claims of Montano and Dixon. It
looked like a clear push, but the referee is adamant, waving his arms to
signal 'play-on'.

38 mins - Stech claims the long throw well and bowls the ball out
immediately to Ferrari. He finds Dixon, who turns infield and finds Driver
in acres of space on the right. The wing-back seems to be caught in
two-minds and his low cross is easily cut out. That was half a chance.

37 mins - Beattie gets free down the inside-right channel, but Spence is
across well to put the ball behind for another corner. Pugh crosses
left-footed and Lee heads out for a throw-in.

34 mins - Beattie turns and shoots from about 25 yards. The ball hits Lee
and flies out for a corner. Pugh curls the ball in and Stech calls loudly
for it before catching above his head.

33 mins - Moult and Mitchell combine down the right after Ferrari is caught
upfield, but Spence is across well to cover and he lays the ball back to
Stech.

32 mins - Dixon is looking a bit frustrated. He tries to turn away from
Davies, but the ball gets away from him. The Ireland U21 forward looks
towards the referee and claims he had been held.

30 mins - The noise of the air conditioning unit seems to have got louder.
West Ham win a series of throw-ins down the right. From the latest, Driver
hurls it into the box, where Begovic collects easily.

29 mins - West Ham win a corner down the right. Edgar crosses and McNaughton
is penalised for a clear push at the back post.

28 mins - This is rapidly turning a bit comical. McNaughton turns and passes
back to Stech, who completely shanks his clearance along the ground. It
somehow eludes Moult and goes back to McNaughton, who clears.

26 mins - Talking of rusty... Faye makes a hash of his through ball to
Beattie and McNaughton takes a massive hack at the ball, only to slice it
through to Stech. West Ham break, but Dixon's cross-shot goes tamely behind
the goal.

24 mins - The opening 24 minutes have not been the best I've seen all
season, but the Hammers are more than holding their own against their more
experienced hosts. Moult, who scored twice for Stoke in their 5-2 defeat in
the reverse fixture at Bishop's Stortford, has been the brightest player on
show so far. Beattie, meanwhile, looks a bit rusty.

21 mins - Mitchell has just had a shocker there. Lund spreads play wide
right where the midfielder has acres of space behind Ferrari, but he makes a
complete hash of controlling the ball and it rolls off his foot for a
throw-in. I doubt Pulis would have been too impressed by that.

19 mins - Moult and Beattie combine before the former turns away from
Ferrari and crosses into the West Ham box, where Sanchez clears with a
diving header.

17 mins - West Ham's wing-backs are having lots of joy down the flanks. Both
are getting themselves available in plenty of space and getting forward
regularly. The challenge will be to maintain their fitness and discipline
for the full 90 minutes. Ferrari illustrates my point by turning away from
his marker brilliantly and winning a free-kick inside the Stoke half.

15 mins - Good hands from Stech there as Lund fires Beattie's lay-off
straight at him from 25 yards.

14 mins - Driver gets forward superbly down the right and finds Montano
unmarked in the centre. The Colombian takes a touch but makes a mess of his
attempted volley.

13 mins - Payne leaves Beattie in a heap with a strong but fair challenge on
the touchline. The striker doesn't look too happy, but he's going to be OK
to continue.

11 mins - Edgar shows some strength in knocking the much bigger Faye off the
ball before the African brings down Payne. West Ham are settling down nicely
here. Dixon has done particularly well up front, showing good strength and
composure to hold the ball up on a number of occasions.

9 mins - Montano does well twice, the first time running at the Stoke back
four, then by winning a left-wing corner. Edgar takes, but his effort is
overhit. McNaughton retrieves the ball, but his cross is blocked.

6 mins - Anything you can do... Mitchell races on to Moult's pass and gets
in behind McNaughton. He seems to have an age to pick his spot, only to shin
his shot badly wide of the near post. He should have done better.

4 mins - A chance for Driver inside the Stoke box. He got forward well and
maybe should have hit the target from a tight angle after latching on to
Montano's poked through ball. Instead, his shot flies wide of the near post
and into the hedge behind the goal.

2 mins - I seriously don't think I have ever been at a game at this level
with less noise coming from the crowd. Instead, all I can hear are the
shouts of the players and managers and the air conditioning unit on the wall
behind me. West Ham are playing with five at the back, with Driver and
Ferrari as wing-backs.

1 min - Hmmm... An uncertain start from the home side, who give the ball
away twice and allow Cameron Mitchell and Louis Moult to combine. Moult
crosses low and Beattie misses his kick. The ball drops to Matthew Lund, but
he shoots straight at Stech.

6.59pm - Stoke get us underway a few seconds early...

6.58pm - The wind has got up a little bit in the last few moments, but
conditions are generally superb for a game of football. Stoke will kick-off
shooting towards the end with trees behind the goal. West Ham will attack
the end with playing fields behind the goal...

6.56pm - Here come the two teams...

6.55pm - Stoke manager Tony Pulis is here, alongside a host of scouts and
important-looking men in suits. I am astounded to announce that Pulis is not
wearing a baseball cap.

6.52pm - Academy goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet and defender Paco Craig have also
made the trip to Nantwich. The two youngsters are not included in the
matchday 16, but will no doubt benefit from the experience of being with
Dyer and his reserve squad.

6.50pm - The PA operator here obviously has a CD collection that has not
been added to since the 1980s. The likes of Europe, Queen and Tina Turner
have been filling the air here over the past 20 minutes or so. Stoke's
players have already headed for their dressing room, while Alex Dyer's squad
are just filtering back down the tunnel ahead of tonight''s game. As far as
I know, there are no big games being played elsewhere this evening, so what
better way to spend the next couple of hours than here on whufc.com...

6.45pm - We have 15 minutes to go until kick-off here at the small yet neat
and modern Weaver Stadium. It has clouded over here in deepest Cheshire, but
we look set fair for a dry evening. The playing surface looks a tad bare in
places, but generally doesn't look to be the worst. Tonight's game
represents a big chance for some of the club's younger players to stake
their claim. Callum McNaughton will be relishing a battle with Beattie,
while the challenge for Cristian Montano is to score past Bosnia
international goalkeeper Begovic, who was in near-unbeatable form for
Portsmouth when West Ham visited Fratton Park in January.

Good evening and welcome to the friendly confines of the Weaver Stadium here
in the Cheshire market town of Nantwich.

West Ham United reserves will take on an older, more experienced Stoke City
side in their penultimate FA Premier Academy League South away fixture of
the 2009/10 campaign.

Alex Dyer has a young side at his disposal, with Jordan Spence captaining a
team including Czech Republic Under-21 goalkeeper Marek Stech and first-year
professionals Davide Ferrari, Olly Lee, Josh Payne, Anthony Edgar and Terry
Dixon.

The starting XI is filled out by four second-year scholars in defenders
Callum Driver, Sergio Sanchez and Callum McNaughton and forward Cristian
Montano.

Stoke, in contrast, have five players with extensive Barclays Premier League
experience in their starting lineup.

Asmir Begovic, who starred for Portsmouth in their 1-1 draw with West Ham at
Fratton Park before joining Stoke for £3.25m in January, will be in goal,
while England striker James Beattie is back in action following a knee
injury.

Former Middlesbrough defender Andrew Davies will marshal the back four,
while Senegal midfielder Amdy Faye and ex-Manchester United winger Danny
Pugh are also in the Potters side.

Stoke City reserves: Begovic, Cohen, Macdonald, Davies, Wint, Lund, Mitchell
(Nicholls 88), Am. Faye, Pugh, Beattie, Moult
Subs: Parton, Hedley, Sinclair, Jackon

West Ham United reserves: Stech, Driver, Sanchez, Spence, McNaughton,
Ferrari, Lee, Payne, Edgar, Montano (Subuola 84), Dixon (Abdulla 76)
Subs: Cowler, Barrett, Wearen

Ilan eyes home start
WHUFC.com
After a stunning second goal at the weekend, Ilan is understandably eager
for more
06.04.2010

Ilan is revelling in being the first Brazilian at the Boleyn but will not be
happy until West Ham United are secure in the Barclays Premier League. The
forward scored a stupendous header late on in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Everton
to earn the Hammers a precious point. It was his second goal in six matches
since arriving in east London from French football back in February.
However, Ilan has yet to cement a place in the side or indeed start a match
at home. That could all change with the visit of Sunderland this week, and
Ilan was well aware of the significance of his strike - but was most
concerned from a team perspective. "I got a goal against Burnley in my first
match but unfortunately we got nothing; this is more important," he told
whufc.com. "I've got a few goals with my head before and it's an important
thing in the game here in England so it was a good time to start doing that.
It was a perfect ball from Julien Faubert and it made it easy for me."
The header not only earned a share of the spoils, it stopped a run of six
straight top-flight defeats for Gianfranco Zola's men and Ilan sees the only
way as up. "It's a springboard for us, a new start, we've got five games
left and we need to win two or three of them to be in the Premier League
next season. "That's our objective and next Saturday will be another battle.
The manager has asked us to fight right till the end. The tactical plan was
normal but we have to keep on like this to the end of the season now."
A steady scorer in Ligue 1 for the past five years with FC
Sochaux-Montbeliard and AS Saint-Etienne, Ilan has always had an eye for the
spectacular. "Confidence isn't a problem for me but I need a run of games
and I hope to play some more. "There are a lot of good players here. I've
not had many opportunities but on two, three occasions I have, I've scored a
couple of goals. If I get more chances, I might score even more."

Captain keeping calm

The skipper is happy to see the team get a reward but knows more work has to
be done
06.04.2010

Matthew Upson is delighted West Ham United have "stopped the rot" and are
feeling positive for final five fixtures ahead. The 2-2 draw at Everton at
the weekend has given the squad the perfect platform for this Sunday's visit
of Sunderland. "There are not many hours of football left. It is down to us
to get ourselves ready," he said. "We are fully aware of the situation, what
is needed from us and will put everything together to do what we have to
do."

"We are good enough. We will build on this as I said, go again this week,
build up a good strategy for the next game ahead and then go out there as a
team together to commit to it. Then, if we deliver the performance this can
bring, then I am confident we can win the game against Sunderland."

Although the club are in the driving seat and have their fate in their own
hands, Upson said there was no point taking comfort from the league table.
"It is very important obviously, but at this stage, it is neither here or
there. The most important thing is where we are come 9 May. We know there is
plenty of work still left to do."

Looking back on Sunday's performance when Manuel da Costa and Ilan scored
for his side, Upson was most pleased to see a six-match losing run halted.
"It is good to have broken that cycle, it was a poor one for us to have,
something not nice to go through, so it was great to get a point and stop
the rot.

"Goodison Park has been a difficult place to come for teams and take
something away with them. So, on that front, we have to be pleased to be
coming away with a point and we can build on that and take that into our
next game now."

Upson has spoken of his belief in a "real desire" for all at West Ham to
beat the drop and said that was reflected in recent training sessions "We
have had a really good week to be honest, we have got together as a group,
worked hard on the training pitch, on things that didn't work before and
tactically.

"Our shape was a lot better and even though we didn't have much possession
in the first half, I thought we were proving to be difficult to break down.
You have to be like that in the Premier League, especially with the position
we are in."

Busy Easter for loanees

West Ham United's four Football League loanees were in action over the
Easter weekend
05.04.2010

West Ham United's band of loanees enjoyed a busy Easter weekend of action.
In the Coca-Cola Championship, Freddie Sears and Bondz N'Gala took to the
field for Coventry City and Plymouth Argyle respectively, Centre-back N'Gala
has been credited with the defensive improvements made by Paul Mariner's
Plymouth, who remain four points adrift of safety with just four matches
remaining. The Forest Gate-born defender completed a full 90 minutes in
Saturday's superb 2-1 win at Doncaster Rovers, only to suffer a setback when
Middlesbrough secured a 2-0 victory at Home Park on Monday. The 23rd-placed
Pilgrims face Watford, who sit four points and two places above them, just
outside the relegation zone, at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
Sears' Coventry are virtually safe after reaching 52 points - seven above
the drop zone - but have no chance of reaching the play-offs after two
defeats over the weekend.
The striker appeared for eleven minutes as a substitute in Saturday's 1-0
home defeat by Derby County, before completing the full 90 minutes in
Monday's 3-0 loss at Reading.

In League One, Frank Nouble enjoyed a six-minute run out as a replacement in
Swindon Town's impressive 3-0 win at Leeds United on Saturday. The Robins,
who have climbed into the second automatic promotion place behind runaway
leaders Norwich City, repeated that scoreline against Tranmere Rovers on
Monday, with Nouble appearing for the final 22 minutes.

In the same division, Matt Fry is still awaiting his debut for Charlton
Athletic as he continues his recuperation from a knee injury. The Addicks,
who boast former Hammers Christian Dailly and Kyel Reid in their ranks, sit
fifth in the table, two points behind Swindon with seven matches remaining.
Further afield, Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson has remained with Belgian top-flight
side KSV Roeselare ahead of their relegation play-off fixtures in May.

Upson wants to build on point
Hammers defender insists team-mates aware of situation
Last updated: 6th April 2010

Matthew Upson insists his West Ham team-mates must build on their
hard-fought point against Everton on Sunday, which ended their six-game
losing streak. The Hammers twice battled back from a goal down to emerge
with a creditable 2-2 draw at Goodison Park at the weekend. The point moved
Gianfranco Zola's side one clear of third-from-bottom Hull City, who still
have a game in hand, as yet another exciting season draws to its conclusion.
Upson believes everyone is aware of the club's predicament and now he wants
his colleagues to end their winless run by defeating Sunderland. "There are
not many hours of football left. It is down to us to get ourselves ready,"
he told the club's official website. "We are fully aware of the situation,
what is needed from us and will put everything together to do what we have
to do. "We are good enough. We will build on this, build up a good strategy
for the next game ahead and then go out there as a team together to commit

Parker backs Hammers team-mates
Midfielder gutted with two-game ban
Last updated: 6th April 2010

Scott Parker is confident West Ham are good enough to secure their survival
without his services. Key midfielder Parker will miss West Ham's next two
games after picking up his 10th booking of the season in Sunday's 2-2 draw
at Everton. It means Parker will be forced to sit out this weekend's home
game with Sunderland as well as the clash at Liverpool on 19th April. Parker
is disappointed to miss the two games and he has called on his team-mates to
build on the battling point at Goodison Park. "I'm very disappointed to miss
two games having been sitting on a 10th yellow card for six or seven games,"
said Parker. "I only had the next game to get through and it was cleared. I
will take the Everton result over that though any day. It is a good starting
point. "It is going to be tough for the rest of the season, but we are up
for it. I hope we can push on. "We all deserve it - players and fans - and
hopefully we can go on and do that. "When I come back I'm sure we will be in
a good position and kick on."
Meanwhile, Hammers striker Ilan has called on Gianfranco Zola to give him
the chance to fire the side to safety. The Brazilian striker came off the
bench to grab West Ham a point at Everton and he believes his side need to
win three of their last five games to guarantee survival. "We've got five
games left and need to win two or three of them," Ilan told The Sun. "I've
not had many opportunities here but I've scored a couple of goals. If I play
more, I might score more."

Matthew Upson is confident West Ham will stay up despite the club's

from us. We will put everything together to do what we have to do." The
Hammers won their first point in seven games against Everton on Sunday and
Upson added: "We are good enough to stay up and will try to take the
performance against Everton into our next game against Sunderland. "It is
good to have broken that cycle of defeats, so it was great to get a point
and stop the rot."

Ilan the man at Goodison
WHUFC.com
Goals from Manuel da Costa and Ilan gave the Hammers a precious point away
to Everton on Sunday
04.04.2010

Everton 2-2 West Ham United

West Ham United battled back superbly to end a six-game losing run with a
dynamic second-half display at Everton on Easter Sunday that fully merited a
point.

The Hammers twice came from behind to equalise through Manuel da Costa and
Ilan, just when the game seemed beyond them after goals from Everton pair
Dinyar Bilyaletdinov and Yakubu. The only low note of the contest, aside
from a missed Mido penalty, was that man of the match - man of the season -
Scott Parker will be absent for the next two matches after a tenth yellow
card of the campaign.

The fantastic finish was a far cry to the start of the day when Valon
Behrami picked up a muscle injury in the warm-up, meaning Gianfranco Zola
had to draft in Junior Stanislas as a late change. The manager had already
left Alessandro Diamanti behind in London with a groin problem.

Everton, in contrast, began like a team who had not lost in nine matches at
Goodison Park, with the last seven of those being victories. They dominated
all of the opening stages and the visitors' feelings of being hard done by
were summed up by the harsh 16th-minute caution for Parker's foul on Cahill.

The second yellow card of the contest 20 minutes later was even more
controversial. Sylvain Distin tripped up Carlton Cole as he went clear from
Parker's perfect pass. Referee Howard Webb pointed to the spot but, despite
the certain goalscoring chance, the card for Distan was inexplicably not of
the red variety.

That was not the worst of it though. For the second awayday in a row, the
Hammers were to miss from the spot. After Diamanti had spurned a golden
chance at Arsenal a fortnight ago, Mido was the culprit this time. The Egypt
striker's tame kick was pushed around the post by Tim Howard.

The Hammers were livelier than at any previous time in the period just after
the interval. Mido was moved closer to strike partner Cole and the pair
looked to link up on a couple of occasions although there was still no
direct threat on Howard's goal. Parker, as ever was the driving force, and
his surge on 56 minutes led to Cahill being cautioned for a lunge.

Two minutes later, Stanislas did well to get into the area and he fed the
ball for Mido on the edge of the six-yard box. The striker's touch was not
the best but it was enough to lead to a corner. From that, the ball was
worked to Noble who showed tenacious play before crashing an effort against
the crossbar with Howard beaten.

Everton eventually cleared for a corner but Noble was able to make his next
contribution count. His delivery was perfect into the area and in a tangle
of legs, Da Costa did brilliantly to fire the ball beyond Howard. With an
hour gone, the Hammers were flying. On 65 minutes, Stanislas raced away and
slipped Cole in but the finish was wayward.

Noble's committed display saw him earn a 70th-minute yellow card and seconds
later the Hammers were handed a major slice of luck when Da Costa looked to
have fouled Louis Saha. The referee this time resisted the urge to point to
the spot.

While Yakubu was already on for Bilyaletdinov, Zola made his first change on
78 minutes when Mido was replaced by Ilan. By now the match was a scrappier
contest, with both sides showing industry but failing to trouble the
keepers. Jack Rodwell was Everton's second change for Leon Osman but it was
their first sub who shone on 85 minutes.

Leighton Baines was given time and space on the left wing to cross, and his
perfect delivery for Yakubu saw him direct his header beyond the despairing
Robert Green. That seemed that for the Hammers, and a seventh straight
defeat. However, barely two minutes later, a simply sublime right-wing cross
from Julien Faubert was met by Ilan with a wonderful diving header.

After a few nervous moments in the closing stages, referee Webb blew time on
the contest and, more significantly, the end of a dreadful run of results. A
precious point - coupled with results involving all the teams around them in
the table going the Hammers' way - is how it will be viewed by the
travelling fans heading home.

Zola proud of players
WHUFC.com
The manager was delighted with the team spirit in earning a battling point
at Goodison Park
04.04.2010

Gianfranco Zola has spoken of the fighting spirit in the West Ham United
ranks after a tremendous battling display away at Everton on Easter Sunday.

The manager had said going into the 2-2 draw that his team had trained very
well in the week and shown a determination to prove they were better than
recent results had suggested. While those outside the club had lined up to
have their say, Zola said everyone at the club had resolved to stick
together.

"I and all the team decided we have to fight until the end," he said. "No
matter what, we are going to fight until the end. Today was a clear
demonstration that we will never give up. To go 2-1 down could have been a
massive blow but we reacted and it was brilliant. I was very pleased with
what they did."

Having been visited by the chairman in the tunnel post-match and witnesses
tremendous support from the travelling fans, Zola added: "Mr Gold was
pleased for the performance for the players as everybody was. It has been a
great day for us. The result gave us a great satisfaction. Everton are not a
bad team, they have beaten all the best teams here so it is a very good
performance."

Zola had asked his men to have "no regrets" when they came off the pitch and
that was the case. No one embodied that more than Scott Parker, who was
simply magnificent yet again. The most nailed on Hammer of the Year ever, it
would seem. However, the manager said they would cope with his two-match
suspension while the club wait for news on Valon Behrami's injury in the
warm-up.

"Scott is an important player but I am sure that the others will run and
fight hard to make sure his absence is not too big. It is important that
after a long spell of defeats to have this point. It will give us a lot of
confidence plus I believe we have found extra spirit for the next match."

Parker perfect
WHUFC.com
The club's star man was again in fine form at Goodison Park - to the
surprise of no one
04.04.2010

Hammer of the Year, player of the month, man of the match. Scott Parker's
display at Goodison Park on Sunday summed up a man in the form of his career
and the determination of a team to ensure a disappointing campaign finishes
on a high. The midfielder was a powerhouse against a strong Everton team and
led by example as the Hammers kept going to earn a precious 2-2 draw.

"It was a battling point," said Parker. "You could see at the end how we are
delighted with that. We have been on a bad run and a lot has been in the
press over the last couple of weeks - some right stuff and some wrong stuff.
We have got a big spirit in the training ground and we deserved a point and
we can push on from here.

"It is a statement of character. We needed to come out and show we have a
siege mentality. We have gone down twice at Goodison and kept going. It is a
good starting point. It is going to be tough for the rest of the season but
we are up for it."

Parker had benefited from three days' break at the start of the week and
said he had seen a terrific attitude at Chadwell Heath in recent days. "The
one thing is we have really dug in. We have stuck together all week and put
in some good training sessions and worked as a unit

"We were much more organised as a team and as an outfit. In the second half
we were the better side. We maybe could have got them on the counter but we
won't get greedy."

To see Everton take a 2-1 lead so late in the contest would have been a
Hammer blow for many sides - "when you are down where we are, when one goal
goes in sometimes it feels like two" - but Parker reiterated the fightback
showed "good spirit".

He added: "I really hope we can push on. We all deserve it - players and
fans - and hopefully we can go on and do that."

The England man will miss the next two matches through suspension but has
faith in his colleagues. "I am very disappointed to miss two games having
been sitting on [a tenth yellow card] for six or seven games. I only had the
next game to get through and it was cleared.

"I will take the result over that though any day and hopefully when I come
back we will be in a good position and kick on."

Fanimo and Turgott denied
WHUFC.com
The club's two England Under-16 internationals were frustrated as England
lost to Portugal on Monday
05.04.2010

Matthias Fanimo and Blair Turgott had to settle for runners-up medals after
England lost out on penalties in the final of the Montaigu Tournament in
France. The U16 event has been played out over the last week with the West
Ham United pair more than playing their part in the Young Lions reaching
Monday's final against Portugal. In the showpiece, the Iberian nation took
the lead on 13 minutes but Robbie Cotton equalised just before the half-hour
mark. Turgott played for 72 minutes while, Fanimo was a 49th-minute
substitute. Neither could add to the scoring though and the match - and the
tournament - was destined to be decided in a shoot-out. England, who had not
tasted defeat in their previous seven matches, lost out 3-1 from the spot
but can still hold their heads high. The Young Lions had already won the
Victory Shield event for home nations.

Manager on Monday
WHUFC.com
A united squad and a resolve to avoid relegation were evident for Gianfranco
Zola to see at Everton
05.04.2010

Gianfranco Zola talked up the seriousness of the survival fight facing West
Ham United despite the euphoria of a late equaliser at Everton on Sunday
afternoon.

Evoking the memorable words of Bill Shankly, the Hammers manager said: "I
wouldn't say the last five games are a matter of life or death but it is
very close. We know what football is like. We are determined to fight until
the end. We are not going to leave anything in the bag. It is a great
encouragement for me and everybody."

The point earned from the 2-2 draw - thanks to equalising goals from Manuel
da Costa and Ilan after Everton twice took the lead through Diniyar
Bilyaletdinov and Yakubu - could well prove pivotal to the prospects of
securing Premier League safety after the club's main rivals all slipped up.
Zola said the achievement was magnified by the obstacles his team had
overcome.

"It was tough out there. We have had everything against us again. We lost
Valon Behram in the warm-up and we went one-nil down. It was the only
mistake we made in the first half but we never gave up. We came back and in
the second half we equalised, we played well.

"The last goal [from Yakubu] could have been a blow for everybody but we
reacted and scored an equaliser straight away. It showed that we don't give
up for anything. That is the point. Don't forget that Everton have beaten
all the best teams at this ground and are a team on top form. What we did
was not a simple thing."

Behrami had wanted to travel to Goodison despite a knee knock that
ultimately did not stand up to the rigours of the warm-up. With the
outstanding Scott Parker suspended for two matches, Zola is hopeful Behrami
will be back to face Sunderland next week when Alessandro Diamanti should
also return from a groin problem.

"Parker has been very good. A leader, he is one of those who leads by
example. We are going to miss him obviously but I am sure with this spirit
and everyone else will work harder to make sure his absence is not too big.
Valon was doubtful before but he wanted to come here and try but
unfortunately he felt it again in the warm-up."

Whoever he fields next time around in the crunch home date with Sunderland,
Zola is confident in the attitude he has seen in the camp. "It was a
difficult situation but despite that we didn't want to stop fighting. That
is what we said to each other yesterday. No matter what we fight until the
end.

"We didn't give up and this was a perfect example.I am delighted for my
staff. This week, Steve Clarke, Kevin Keen, Antonio Pintus and Kevin
Hitchcock have been working hard with the players - to keep them together,
to cheer them up and to organise them. They did a brilliant job. I want to
share everything with them."

Zola was questioned in some quarters for giving his players a break but he
was adamant. "It was very important. It was massive. They had played three
tough games in seven days - three defeats. You can imagine what the
condition was. It was necessary for them to go and clear their minds and
then come back to train hard."

Revealing that the dressing room atmosphere afterwards was "fantastic", Zola
said there was a resolve that has him confident in the chances of avoiding
relegation. "Sometimes we have made mistakes but we have been together. All
the criticism has probably made us stronger. We were together but it has
made us stronger.

"We are very much into [what we have to do]. No doubt about it. Getting a
draw was very important because it will give morale, strength and confidence
for the next match we are going to play on Saturday."

Everton 2 - 2 West Ham
BBC.co.uk
Ilan brought West Ham level for the second time with a flying header
By Phil Dawkes

Struggling West Ham ended a run of six straight defeats by earning a
deserved and vital point at in-form Everton. Diniyar Bilyaletdinov headed
Everton into a first-half lead that keeper Tim Howard preserved by saving a
penalty from Mido after a foul on Carlton Cole. West Ham were rewarded for
their second half endeavour when Manuel Da Costa bundled in to level from a
corner. Everton substitute Yakubu's late header seemed to have won it, but
two minutes later Araujo Ilan squared the match. The point is a hard-earned
but fully warranted reward for Gianfranco Zola's struggling Hammers, who
after a first half in which nothing went right for them, rallied in the
second and looked far from a side who prior to this game had lost a club
record six successive Premier League games.
During a frustrating first half, the West Ham boss cut an exasperated figure
on the Goodison Park touchline as his side not only allowed a largely
under-par Everton to take the lead with their first - and a rare - effort on
goal but proved their own worst enemy by wasting an opportunity to draw
level from the spot. Bilyaletdinov's opener could have been avoided had
Jonathan Spector's headed clearance from a Leighton Baines cross been better
but instead it allowed Tim Cahill to nod the ball back into the six-yard box
where the Russian was lurking to glance a header of his own past Robert
Green. Mido's penalty, awarded after Cole had tumbled following a tangle of
legs with Toffees defender Sylvain Distin, was tame and Howard was able to
palm it past the post with relative ease. However, after the break West Ham
emerged a transformed side with the bit between their teeth and took the
game to their opponents with the fight and desperation you would expect from
a side in their predicament. That they came back from a goal down not once
but twice demonstrates a spirit many thought had deserted the Upton Park
ranks and suggests they are fully equipped with the qualities they need to
avoid dropping out of the division. On the hour their new-found belief was
rewarded when Da Costa muscled his way through a body of players to bundle
the ball home after Cole and Cahill had challenged ineffectively for it from
a corner It sparked an enthralling final half hour, in which Cole dragged an
effort wide for the visitors and Louis Saha saw a penalty shout waved away
for the home side after he fell under a tackle from Da Costa, before Yakubu
headed home a pinpoint left-wing cross from Baines to seemingly earn Everton
their eighth successive home league win.
However, two minutes later Julien Faubert delivered a superb cross from the
right and substitute Ilan threw himself forward and head home to earn the
Hammers what could be a crucial point. But it comes at a cost for West Ham,
who will be without influential midfielder Scott Parker, who put in a
towering performance here, for the next two matches because of suspension
after collecting his 10th booking of the season for a lunging tackle on
Cahill.

Gianfranco Zola delighted with West Ham fighting spirit
BBC.co.uk

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola hailed his team after they twice fought back
from one down to draw 2-2 at Everton. The point avoided a seventh successive
loss and leaves them one point above the drop zone with five games left.
Following Araujo Ilan's dramatic late headed equaliser, Zola said: "At 2-1,
it could have been a massive blow but we reacted and it was brilliant. "It
has been a great day. It will give us a lot of confidence and that will be
very important for the next matches." The Italian manager went into the
match under huge pressure having suffered a Premier League club record six
straight defeats which left West Ham hovering one place above the three
relegation spots, but only on goal difference.
Zola gave his players three days off to recharge their batteries after
successive home defeats against Wolves and Stoke, and they put in a spirited
performance. Despite Mido missing a penalty, Zola's men twice came from
behind. Manuel da Costa cancelled out Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's first-half
header, and Ilan scored just three minutes after Yakubu's strike appeared to
have sealed it for the Toffees, who had won their previous seven matches at
home. "We decided to fight until the end and today was a clear demonstration
that we kept our promise because we never gave up," Zola added. "I'm very
pleased with my team. If you have that kind of attitude, you have no
regrets. It was fantastic. I am going to get drunk tonight! "I wouldn't say
the last five games are going to be a matter of life and death - but very
close. We know what football is like but we are not going to hold anything
back."
The big disappointment for Zola was a booking for midfielder Scott Parker
who will now miss the next two games - at home to Sunderland and a trip to
Liverpool - through suspension after he collected his 10th yellow card of
the season. Although Everton boss David Moyes conceded a draw had been a
fair result, he was angry his side had been denied a penalty when Louis Saha
went down under a Da Costa challenge. "I think that was a crucial moment,"
said Moyes. "We've played better this season but we looked as though not
playing great we were going to win the game, but it was not to be. I don't
think either team did enough to worry the keepers. "I have to give West Ham
credit, though. They made it hard for us with a lot of people behind the
ball and we just didn't have enough to break them down."
The draw leaves Everton in eighth with only a mathematical chance of
qualifying for the Champions League as they are nine points behind
fourth-place Manchester City.

Everton 2 West Ham Utd 2
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 4th April 2010
By: Staff Writer No.2

United came away from Goodison Park with a well-deserved point after today's
encounter with Everton. Despite a busy start for the Irons it looked like
another defeat was on the cards after a first half in which absolutely
nothing went right for Zola's men who were looking to end a run that had
seen them lose six on the trot. Things started to go wrong before the match
had even started with Valon Behrami picking up what looked like a muscle
strain in the pre-match warm up. Things went from bad to worse when ref
Howard Webb issued a yellow card for a Parker challenge that had clearly won
the ball. What was not to be Webb's last bafflingly inept decision of the
day means that Parker will miss the forthcoming matches against Sunderland
and Liverpool.
Things went from bad to worse on 24 minutes when Spector headed a ball
straight up in the air and Bilyaledtinov flicked Cahill's unchallenged
header past Green from close range. Hammers were granted a lifeline on 37
minutes when Carlton Cole was put clean through by Parker's superb through
ball. Distin upended the striker when clean through but disgracefully
avoided the red card that the denial of goalscoring opportunity should have
brought as Webb decided that a yellow should suffice.
Mido decided to take the penalty but his weak effort made it far too easy
for Howard to save down to his right and the half ended with most observers
wondering what more could go wrong.
Whatever was said at half-time it certainly worked for once. Hammers started
the second period by far the better team and might have levelled just short
of the hour when Noble's clever chip came back off the crossbar before being
smuggled away for a corner. The respite for the home side was short lived as
Cole and Cahil challenged for the ball, Da Costa was closest to the loose
ball and, despite falling forward, managed to get enough on the ball to push
it past Howard to give the visitors a much-deserved equaliser.

Carlton Cole then scuffed a shot wide following a good move before United
enjoyed their first spot of good fortune at the hands of Webb. Saha beat Da
Costa to the ball and went down under a challenge best described as clumsy.
However, possibly mindful of his numerous errors in favour of the home side
in the first half, Webb elected to wave play on to deny the home side a
penalty - though it appeared that the initial contact had taken place
outside the box.

All the hard work seemed to have been for nothing with 5 minutes of normal
time left when poor defending in the air once more allowed sub Yakubu to put
another close-range header.

However, the home side's lead lasted but two minutes as Julien Faubert
capped a decent run with an inch-perfect ball for sub Ilan to place a
marvellous diving header home to level the scores and give the visitors the
least that they deserved after an excellent 45 minutes.

The point leaves the Irons three points behind Wigan with a vastly superior
goal difference and it is to be hoped that the spirit shown on Merseyside
can be carried forward into the next few vital matches.

Zola on ... Everton

A delighted Gianfranco Zola shares his thoughts on a vital draw at Goodison
Park...

You must be proud?

I am. It was tough out there. We have had everything against us again. We
lost Valon Behram in the warm-up and we went one-nil down. It was the only
mistake we made in the first half but we never gave up. We came back and in
the second half we equalised, we played well.

The last goal could have been a blow for everybody but we reacted and scored
an equaliser straight away. It showed that we don't give up for anything.
That is the point. Don't forget that Everton have beaten all the best teams
at this ground and are a team on top form. What we did was not a simple
thing.

Does it prove you were to right to carry on?

I have no thoughts other than the fact I am pleased for my team. It was a
difficult situation but despite that we didn't want to stop fighting. That
is what we said to each other yesterday. No matter what, we fight til the
end. I know there are things against us but we don't give up and today was a
perfect example.

Let me say, I am delighted for my staff. This week Steve Clarke, Kevin Keen,
Antonio Pintus and Kevin Hitchcock have been working hard with the players,
to keep them together, to cheer them up and to organise them for today. They
did a brilliant job. I want to share everything with them.

Show of character? Make you more certain about what you are doing?

It is great encouragement for me and everybody. I wouldn't say the last five
games are a matter of life or death but it is very close. We know what
football is like. We are determined to fight until the end. We are not going
to leave anything in the bag.

Important to have time off?

It was very important. They came from playing three tough games in seven
days - it was three defeats and two at home. You can imagine what their
condition was and it was necessary for them to go and clear their minds and
then come back to train hard.

Comments brought you together?

I don't think that we have been… this team has been together. Sometimes we
have made mistakes but we have been together. All the criticism probably
made us stronger. We were together but it has made us stronger

Did you expect Parker to take penalty?

No. The penalty taker was Mido.

Way to respond?

At the end of the day what matters is what you do on the pitch. The players
have shown that we only want to focus on football. Other things we can't
stop because people want to give opinions and judge us. But as far as we are
concerned, we are 100 per cent concerned on football and have to make it
right on the pitch.

Confident about avoiding relegation?

We are very much into it. No doubt about it. Getting a draw here today was
very important because it will boost morale and give us strength and
confidence for the next match.

Parker outstanding?

He has been very good. A leader, he is one of those who leads by example. We
are going to miss him obviously but I am sure with this spirit everyone else
will work harder to make sure his absence is not too big.

Mood in the dressing room?

It was a fantastic atmosphere. I am going to get drunk tonight!

Behrami?

A knee problem. He was doubtful before but he wanted to come here and try,
but unfortunately he felt it again in the warm-up.

Upson backing Zola
Hammers defender feels side can beat the drop
By Mike Barton Last updated: 5th April 2010

West Ham defender Matthew Upson has maintained that the whole squad are
united behind under-pressure boss Gianfranco Zola. Upson was part of the
side that battled to salvage a 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on
Sunday to end a week of turmoil in East London on a positive note. Zola has
come under increasing fire after a run of six straight league defeats left
the Hammers on the brink of the relegation zone. However, Hull's defeat at
Stoke on Saturday allowed the struggling Hammers to move a point away from
their rivals, and Upson wants the side to kick on under their current boss.
"I think we can stay up, I think we are good enough," he said. "We are aware
of the situation and the manager's feelings and commitment. The manager
deals with it with the players to their faces. "Whatever else is said and
done, we know the truth and we are together as a group. "We are totally
understanding and clear of the picture of what is going on. We are putting
everything we can together."
With just five games to go until the end of the season, the England defender
is confident that his side can put together the run of results required to
save their Premier League status after stopping their string of defeats. "We
had a really good week, we got together as a group and worked hard on the
training pitch on things we had been doing poorly over the last few games,"
Upson added. "It is something to build on but there is plenty of work left
to do. "There are not a lot of hours of football but we are in the mix and
it is up to us to drag ourselves out of it. "We had a really good week, we
got together as a group and worked hard on the training pitch on things we
had been doing poorly over the last few games."We need to get together again
this week, have a good strategy for the weekend and commit to it."

Zola delighted with spirit
Hammers boss buoyed with last-gasp point at Goodison
By James Riach Last updated: 4th April 2010

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola was delighted with his team's fighting
spirit after they fought back to draw 2-2 with Everton. Despite going behind
twice at Goodison Park, the Hammers hit back to earn a vital point in their
quest to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season. Indeed, even
after Yakubu had given the Toffees a 2-1 lead on 85 minutes, the Londoners
responded two minutes later with an excellent diving header from Ilan to
save the game. After a torrid run of results the draw looked to have buoyed
the Upton Park outfit at the final whistle, and manager Zola expressed his
pleasure. "We decided to fight until the end and today was a clear
demonstration that we kept our promise because we never gave up," he told
Sky Sports. "At 2-1, it could have been a massive blow but we reacted and it
was brilliant. "I'm very pleased with my team today. If you have that kind
of attitude, you have no regrets. "It has been a great day for us. I think
it will give a lot of confidence to the players and that will be very
important for the next matches. "The result gave us great satisfaction
because this team Everton is not a bad team. "It is important after a long
spell of defeats to have this point. I think it will give a lot of
confidence to the players. "Plus I believe that we found extra spirit today.
That will be very important for the next matches."
The only downside for the Hammers is that man of the match Scott Parker will
be suspended for two games after picking up another booking. Zola added:
"Scott Parker is an important player but I'm sure that the others will run
and fight hard to make sure his absence is not too big." The Italian
tactician was under immense pressure before the match on Merseyside, with
the threat of relegation becoming a reality in East London in recent weeks.
Zola opted to take a break to Sardinia during the week, whilst giving his
players a couple of days off, and he thinks his decision paid dividends. He
remarked: "I didn't feel vindicated about it. I just thought it was the
right thing and today's result proved that I was right." Asked what co-owner
David Gold said after the match, Zola said: "He was pleased, pleased for the
performance, for the players."

Hammers hold on at Everton
Zola's men show fighting spirit to secure a crucial point on Merseyside
By James Riach Last updated: 4th April 2010

Man of the match: Parker was everywhere today, breaking up the play while
offering a creative spark also.
Goal of the match: Substitute Ilan met Faubert's inviting cross with a fine
diving header to stun Everton.
Moment of the match: Distin only received yellow for bringing down Cole
inside the area but he was the last man.
Save of the match: Mido's penalty lacked conviction but Howard still had to
be at full stretch to tip the penalty wide.
Talking points: Can Everton forget about Europe now? Will this result and
performance galvanise the Hammers?

West Ham earned a valuable point in their quest to avoid relegation from the
Premier League after a 2-2 draw at Everton. With Burnley and Hull both
suffering defeats on Saturday, Gianfranco Zola's men travelled to Goodison
Park in the knowledge that they could climb away from the chasing pack at
the bottom of the table. But their intentions were dealt a blow in the 24th
minute when Diniyar Bilyaletdinov glanced a header in from close range to
give the Toffees the lead, and things went from bad to worse before
half-time as Mido saw a penalty saved by Tim Howard after Carlton Cole had
been fouled by Sylvain Distin just inside the Everton box. The Hammers
stepped up the pace after the break, though, and equalised when defender
Manuel Da Costa bundled the ball in after a scramble from a corner. Everton
looked to have broken the visiting fans' hearts when Yakubu put them in
front once more with a precise header on 85 minutes, but just two minutes
later substitute Ilan netted a superb diving header to secure a vital point
for the Londoners. After a disjointed first-half display, gaining a draw was
an unexpected bonus that lifted West Ham one point clear of the bottom
three. That was no more than the visitors deserved for a battling showing
after the break, Scott Parker typifying their effort with an outstanding
display in defence and attack. The only blight on his performance was a
booking which means he must now serve a two-match suspension.
Fate had appeared to be conspiring against under-pressure Hammers boss
Gianfranco Zola before kick-off. Having already lost Kieron Dyer, the
Italian was forced to make a late change when Valon Behrami was injured in
the warm-up. After initially been named among the substitutes, Junior
Stanislas was unexpectedly promoted to the side while Josh Payne was handed
a place on the bench. Everton made just one change, and it proved a key one,
with goalscorer Bilyaletdinov starting ahead of Jack Rodwell. The match
started slowly but West Ham finally got a sight of goal when Parker fired
well over from a corner. Everton's first opportunity came from a free-kick
but Leighton Baines shot straight into the wall from 20 yards. The hosts got
another chance from slightly greater distance after Parker earned that
costly booking for a late challenge on Tim Cahill. This time top scorer
Louis Saha took aim but sliced his effort well wide. Everton stepped up the
pressure to claim the lead after 24 minutes. Jonathan Spector attempted to
head away a Baines cross but found only Cahill, who nodded back for
Bilyaletdinov to glance in from close range. Cahill then threatened a second
after a driving run but dragged his shot wide from the edge of the box. The
Hammers were gifted a potential route back into the game as referee Howard
Webb pointed to the spot after 37 minutes. Distin clipped the back of Cole's
legs in a clumsy attempt to shepherd the ball back to Howard as the striker
raced onto a fine ball from Parker. Distin was the last man but Webb showed
leniency and brandished only a yellow card, but Howard saved Mido's
spot-kick. The on-loan Middlesbrough forward's effort was destined for the
bottom corner but the travelling fans' general dissatisfaction with his
performances became evident as they sarcastically called for him to be sent
off after a poor challenge on Steven Pienaar. Bilyaletdinov then spurned a
chance to compound West Ham's misery when he curled a shot over before the
break.
The opening to the second half was scrappy but the Hammers were at least
competitive and did most of the pressing. Another chance almost opened up
for Mido from a Stanislas pass but his touch was heavy and Phil Jagielka
cleared. That gave the visitors encouragement and Mark Noble was unlucky to
see an opportunistic chip from the edge of the area hit the crossbar with
Howard beaten. West Ham earned their reward on the hour as a Noble corner
fell between a group of players in the Everton area. Da Costa was the
quickest to react in the ensuing scramble and forced the ball home for an
equaliser. The Londoners at last had momentum and Cole went close to adding
a second with a low shot that just went wide. Everton had been lethargic
since the interval but felt they should have had a penalty when Saha went
down under a Da Costa challenge. The Frenchman appeared to have nicked the
ball past Da Costa when he was tripped but Webb told him to get up. Everton
looked to have snatched victory five minutes from time when Yakubu, a
replacement for Bilyaletdinov, rose to meet a Baines cross with a powerful
header. Robert Green had little chance of saving it but the Hammers were not
beaten. They responded instantly as Julien Faubert broke down the right and
delivered a pinpoint cross for the onrushing Ilan. The Brazilian, who had
ended Mido's unhappy afternoon when he came on with 13 minutes remaining,
dived forward to meet the ball with an excellent header that flew past
Howard. Zola leapt for joy and his side held on to claim a deserved and
potentially vital point.

Noble - Relegation can't happen
Hammers ace determined to beat drop
By Chris Burton Last updated: 4th April 2010

Mark Noble admits relegation would be catastrophic for West Ham, and he is
determined to prevent it. The midfielder is a local lad made good, having
progressed through the ranks at Upton Park to become an integral part of the
first-team fold. Should the club succumb to the drop, he would be among
those expected to be offloaded during the summer. Noble has no intention of
allowing that to happen, but admits the fear factor is driving him crazy at
the moment. West Ham have just six games to steer clear of trouble, starting
with Sunday's trip to Everton, with only goal difference keeping them
outside of the bottom three at present. "I think about it (relegation)
45,000 times a day, but I don't want those negative thoughts in my head,"
Noble told The People. "The Premier League is the best in the world and I
intend to play in it for all my career, but I want it to be with West Ham.
"I don't know where it would leave me if we go down, but I have three years
left on my contract. We would have to cross that bridge if we come to it,
because I cannot even think about it right now. "Staying in the league is
critical. Rob Green is England's No.1, and he won't want to play in the
Championship. Fabio Capello won't want him to either. "It all comes down to
whether we stay up, because when clubs go down they need money. If you have
the players we have then clubs will want to buy them. That will be the case.
"This club is too good to go down and I honestly think we will get through
this. I keep telling the lads that we will stay up."
Noble has endured countless ups and downs with West Ham since making his
debut in 2004, but hopes the club can soon establish some stability and
start moving in the right direction once again. He added: "I think we need
two wins and a draw to keep us up. The good news is that this is in our own
hands. That is the best thing you can hope for.
"It seems like every year the club goes from one situation to another. Since
I made my debut in the Championship we went on to lose a play-off final to
Crystal Palace, then eventually won promotion. "A new chairman then came in
and spent a lot of money, but then the club went bankrupt. "It's like a
roundabout here, but hopefully we can stay in the Premier League and get the
foundations right under these owners. It means everything to me."

Ilan : I'll save you Franco
The Sun
By ANDREW DILLON

ILAN has told West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola: Put me in and I'll save your
skin. The Brazilian striker also hopes his goals can secure him another
year's contract at Upton Park.
Ilan's £20,000-a-week deal expires this summer but the Hammers have an
option to extend it by 12 months. Their survival fight was boosted by his
super headed leveller in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Sunday after he came on
as a sub. Ilan, 29, said: "We didn't win but it was a vital point. "We've
got five games left and need to win two or three of them." Ilan, who has
netted twice since signing on a free from St Etienne in February, added:
"I've not had many opportunities here but I've scored a couple of goals. If
I play more, I might score more."

Dive bomber has Zola smiling
The Sun

FLYING Ilan gave West Ham's Premier League survival hopes a major lift at
Goodison. The supersub's brilliant diving header rescued a point for
Gianfranco Zola's strugglers two minutes after Yakubu nodded Everton back in
front. But boss David Moyes was fuming after ref Howard Webb did not give
his side a penalty for Manuel Da Costa's challenge on Louis Saha. Moyes
said: "It was a stonewall penalty for us. The decision not to give us a
penalty was a poor one." The 2-2 draw leaves West Ham one point above the
drop zone with five matches left to play. But the Hammers still have it all
to do with trips to Liverpool and Fulham. This draw will be a huge lift for
Zola after last weekend's 1-0 home defeat to Stoke had left him clinging on
to his job. Everton's failure to hang on for all three points is a blow to
their hopes of qualifying for Europe. They are eighth in the table after
losing only twice in the Prem since New Year. Diniyar Bilyaletdinov opened
the scoring for the home side before Da Costa scrambled home a leveller.
Yakubu headed in from a Leighton Baines cross for 2-1 before Ilan's big
moment. Referee Webb will be England's representative at the World Cup. He
was in the action throughout by giving West Ham a first-half penalty after
Sylvain Distin fouled Carlton Cole. Moyes added: "I thought it was a penalty
and on another day it might have been a sending off. "We didn't play well
enough to merit more but sometimes when you don't play great you hope to win
it - and it looked like we had done that late on. "We tried to do it right
but we never quite got to the level."

Matthew Upson relishes return of West Ham's fighting spirit
Squad is 'united' behind Gianfranco Zola
England defender confident of avoiding relagtion
guardian.co.uk, Monday 5 April 2010 16.05 BST

Matthew Upson has spoken out in support of West Ham's manager Gianfranco
Zola after the 2-2 draw with Everton. Matthew Upson has said West Ham have
taken heart from the battling 2-2 draw with Everton and their performance at
Goodison Park proves the squad is united behind the manager, Gianfranco
Zola. The result left them still only one point above the bottom three, but
the manner of performance and spirit shown in adversity suggested it may be
a turning point. The days before the match had been dominated by speculation
over Zola's future and his apparently uneasy relationship with the club's
co-owners, David Gold and David Sullivan."We are aware of the situation and
the manager's feelings and commitment," said the England defender. "The
manager deals with it with the players to their faces. Whatever else is said
and done, we know the truth and we are together as a group. "We are totally
understanding and clear of the picture of what is going on. We are putting
everything we can together. I think we can stay up, I think we are good
enough."
West Ham have five games left to avoid relegation, starting with next
weekend's home match against Sunderland. After finally breaking a run of six
successive defeats, Upson feels they can now generate some momentum. "It is
nice to break that cycle because it is a poor cycle and not nice to go
through. It was nice to stop the rot," said Upson. "It is something to build
on but there is plenty of work left to do. There are not a lot of hours of
football but we are in the mix and it is up to us to drag ourselves out of
it. "We need to get together again this week, have a good strategy for the
weekend and commit to it. If we deliver a performance I am sure we can win
the game."

Sullivan reveals reason behind Fulham complaint

David Sullivan says the Premier League needs to clarify its rules © Getty
ImagesWest Ham co-owner David Sullivan has revealed that his complaint about
Fulham's weakened team was made because he felt the rule needed urgent
"clarification". The Hammers issued a complaint to the Premier League after
Fulham's defeat at Hull on March 27 as Roy Hodgson elected to rest the likes
of Danny Murphy and Damien Duff ahead of their Europa League tie with
Wolfsburg. Wolves were fined earlier in the season for changing their team
in a game at Manchester United and Hull's victory could have a big effect on
the relegation battle. Sullivan told Soccernet on Monday: "We have done this
not because we have anything against Fulham but because the rules need
clarification so we all know exactly what the rule means. "I think it's good
that we will all have the question clarified by the Premier League, so we
all know where we stand for the future."
Sullivan and fellow co-owner David Gold might consider putting forward a
motion whereby the rules mirror that of the Champions League, where clubs
must name their first-team squad and can only select directly from it,
changing it only at certain pre-assigned points. Sullivan's decision to
lodge the official complaint was questioned by the club's own manager,
Gianfranco Zola, who publicly declared that Hodgson was doing what was best
for his club. Sullivan was also heavily rebuked by Fulham chairman Mohamed
Al-Fayed.
"I stick two fingers up to West Ham," Al-Fayed said. "If they don't like the
team we had in this match then I don't care. Only our manager chooses the
players. We can pick whoever we want and it's nothing to do with them."
Sullivan responded by saying: "We fully respect the stand Mr Al-Fayed is
taking and his views as he is a man we greatly admire and like. However,
we'd ask for a ruling by the Premier League. Our complaint in effect is a
test case for the benefit of all Premier League clubs."
While there are constant issues off the field to deal with, at least there
was something for Sullivan and his co-owner David Gold to smile about with
the battling point at Goodison Park. Sullivan, who has been deeply critical
of the players' attitudes in recent weeks, told Soccernet: "We are all
really pleased with the huge effort put in by the whole team. I was very
proud of them all."
