Collison fired up for Boro
WHUFC.com
Jack Collison has emphasised how determined the players are to end the
season with a win
21.05.2009

With just one solitary match against Middlesbrough to go, Jack Collison is
eager to head into the summer on a high.

West Ham United have not lost their final league game of the season since
2001, and since their return to the Barclays Premier League they have
recorded some impressive final-day results, including victories over
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Now Collison, who made his first start in more than two months against
Everton last Saturday, is looking to ensure that trend continues at the
Boleyn Ground on Sunday when the relegation-threatened visitors from the
north-east visit.

"We want to end the season on a high, especially at Upton Park in front of
our own fans as it's not nice to lose any game," the Wales midfielder said.
"Unfortunately we're not going to make Europe but we're going to look to put
in a good performance and end the season with a bit of a buzz."

Regardless of Sunday's results, the Hammer of the Year 2008/09 will be
crowned before the players embark on a lap of appreciation around the Boleyn
Ground pitch. Like most people, Collison believes this season will be a
closely-run affair.

"Coley [Carlton Cole] and Herita [Ilunga] have both been brilliant. Whoever
wins it, it will be a great achievement for them. If you look at the
previous names that have won it in the past, they are all massive players.
And coming from the fans as well, it's got to be one of the highest
accolades you can get."

Tough call for Tomka
WHUFC.com
James Tomkins is predicting a closely-run competition for this season's
Hammer of the Year
21.05.2009

James Tomkins may not be involved against Middlesbrough this weekend after
his unlucky dismissal last week, but he is looking forward to seeing who is
crowned Hammer of the Year.

The reigning young player of the year has been rightly recognised for his
own outstanding contribution since returning from injury and a loan spell at
Derby County in the second half of the season. His form is such that he is
being tipped to win a place in the England squad for next month's UEFA
European Under-21 Championship alongside club-mate Mark Noble.

Tomkins' club season is over though after that unfortunate red card in the
3-1 reverse at Everton last Saturday when he appeared to clip Tim Cahill on
his way through to goal. The England Under-20 defender has put the
disappointment behind him and is more than happy to have his say on which of
his team-mates might take the ultimate player prize this campaign.

He said: "I think it's a hard one, there's a lot of players that have done
so well. It's the first time we've seen Valon [Behrami] play. A lot of
people may have forgotten about him but you know how good he was at the
start of the year especially.

"Then you've got Matthew [Upson], I've played alongside him and I've seen
learnt a learnt a lot from him as he's been brilliant to me through the
games as well. Robert Green has been brilliant again this year as has Scotty
Parker."

Hammer of the Year poll closed
WHUFC.com
The voting for Hammer of Year finished at 9am on Thursday, with the winner
announced on Sunday
21.05.2009

The poll for fans to vote for their Hammer of the Year 2008/09, sponsored by
Vantis, has now closed.

With over 10,000 votes cast in total and the top three looking like they
could be separated by just 200 votes, this season's award promises to be an
extremely close-run affair.

The eventual winner will collect their trophy after Sunday's game with
Middlesbrough, alongside the Young Hammer of the Year and the Doris Bell
award, both of which are chosen by Academy director Tony Carr. The Goal of
the Season and runner-up Hammer of the Year will also be awarded their
trophies.

Charity walkers on course

Four Middlesbrough fans are walking to the Boleyn Ground to raise money for
charity
21.05.2009

A group Middlesbrough fans are taking on the toughest walk of their lives as
they make their way to Sunday's fixture on foot to help raise money for
charity.

The quartet - Jeff Patterson, Paul Brand, Rob Blanchard and Paul Hudson -
set off on the 256 mile trip on Saturday night after Middlesbrough's home
game with Aston Villa and they were still on target to arrive in time for
kick-off at the Boleyn Ground on Wednesday afternoon.

A tired Jeff said: "I would be lying if I said I was feeling fine, but the
Boro and making the charities happy is helping to drive us on to get to the
end. We're looking forward to sitting down, taking our boots and having a
nice pint near the ground."

The walk is in support of the NSPCC, The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer
Research UK and The Finlay Cooper Fund, a charity set up by ex-Middlesbrough
star Colin Cooper.

The group have a mobile phone, which fans can ring to offer them
encouragement and support. The number is 07905 153709.

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Middlesbrough go to West Ham needing a minor miracle to extend their current
stay in the Premier League into a 12th season; a repeat of last season's
final day 8-1 victory over Manchester City would help, but that was in front
of their home fans.

Gareth Southgate's Teessiders travel on a club record 11 successive away
league losses.

West Ham look set to finish one place higher than last season and the lowest
placed London club in ninth, but if they could catch Spurs in eighth they'd
gain another £760,000 in merit payments.

The Hammers have not lost a last day fixture in the Premier League since
Middlesbrough beat them 1-2 at the Riverside on 19 May 2001.

West Ham and Middlesbrough lock horns for the fourth time this season. The
reverse league fixture was drawn 1-1, as was the FA Cup fifth round tie at
Upton Park, but the Teessiders won 2-0 in the replay. Stewart Downing scored
in both ties.

The Hammers are vying for a seventh consecutive home Premier League victory
over Middlesbrough, yet the overall league standings between the clubs is
level. They have played 55 games against each other since 1923, and each
club has won 22 with 11 drawn.

Distance between the clubs: 250 miles (402 kilometres)

In defence of Savio
KUMB.com
Filed: Thursday, 21st May 2009
By: Staff Writer

Gianluca Nani has defended his decision to sign Savio Nsereko in the wake of
criticism from some quarters. West Ham's technical director spoke out in the
wake of United's failure to qualify for Europe - a situation some have
blamed on the club's failure to effectively replace Craig Bellamy in the
transfer window, with criticism also aimed at Nani for spending what little
budget the Hammers had on the virtually unknown 19-year-old. But Nani has
spoken out to defend the acquisition from Brescia, claiming that Savio will
feature heavily in Gianfranco Zola's plans next summer. "Savio is a young
player with a big future," Nani told the ELA. "He's still a young boy and
he's coming from another country, but we are really confident about him.
"Savio is not a replacement for Bellamy - he doesn't play the same position
and he's not that kind of player. At that time, we wanted to change the way
we were playing. "One of the good things about Gianfranco Zola is that he
can change the way we play in terms of formation - we've started to play
4-3-2-1 and then 4-4-2 or 4-3-1-2. "Maybe next season it will be Ashton and
Cole, which means a different way of playing. Savio will be part of our
future. But he has not had one day of rest during the last year. "Last
summer he was in the European Under-19 championships, then without any rest
he was back at Brescia, then in January he had no time off before coming
here. He needs time."
The number 10 has made just one start under Zola since joining the club in
January. He has also made ten substitute appearances.

Sears on loan move
KUMB.com
Filed: Thursday, 21st May 2009
By: Staff Writer

Freddie Sears admits that a spell on loan would be the best possible move
for him next season. Gianfranco Zola revealed earlier thsi week that
19-year-old Sears is likely to spend next season out on loan having failed
to breakthrough to the first team on a regular basis this term. It is a
scenario that Sears appears to agree with; taking to the ELA, he said: "It's
hard not playing every game because you need a little run in the team to get
going, but once you get a goal, your confidence is really high. I think if I
play a few games, I'll have a chance to show what I can really do. "When
you're not playing at West Ham, you just want to play football and going on
loan is something I'd definitely be interested in. Some of the boys have
come back after going out on loan and you can see that it's helped - just
confidence-wise and just playing in front of thousands of people every
week."
Sears is almost certain to have to drop a level in order to achieve his
ambition of regular football - but it's not a situation that phases him.
"We've discussed what could happen at the start of next season and I think
the Championship is a good, strong level to go and develop your football,"
he added. "For me, a London team would be nice - a team from around here.
But if you have to go away from home, you live with it. "I've looked to go
out this year, but there's not been too many players around and it's been
hard for the manager to let me go. But it's hard only playing 15 minutes
here and there and there's not many reserve games."

Green in the driving seat

Robert Green could be set to make his first competitive start for England
when they face Kazakhstan and Andorra next month. Green - who has criminally
earned just two international caps thus far - is in the driving seat with
current number one choice David James injured, and having impressed Fabio
Capello in recent weeks. But the 29-year-old former Norwich stopper - who
had his goalkeeping gloves embossed with 'England's Number Six' last season
in reference to his constant failure to win any further caps - is taking
nothig for granted. "As soon as Jamo was out I knew people would be looking
around for a name - but I'm a bit too long in the tooth to get carried
away," he told today's Independent. "One thing I've learnt about the new
manager is he does not take any notice of anyone else, he is his own man.
But I will be turning up - assuming I am picked - and will prepare to play,
as I do every time."
Green also praised new boss Gianfranco Zola, for whom he thanked for
boosting his England chances. "He has instilled confidence in everyone," he
added. "As a goalkeeper you are reactive to what happens in front of you. If
the defence play well that rubs off on you and vice versa. "The defence has
been largely unchanged, which helps, so does the fact we play out from the
back more. The manager has encouraged us to play football, and it's been a
joy for everyone."

Green has received the backing of former England keeper Nigel Martyn, who
said: "The opportunity is there for somebody to grab it. I would imagine
Robert Green will get the chance against Kazakhstan, then it is up to him.
He would get my vote."

Sears interested in loan move
West Ham striker linked with Palace switch
Last updated: 21st May 2009

Freddie Sears has admitted he would welcome the opportunity to go out on
loan next season. The 19-year-old striker emerged as one of the brightest
young prospects in English football last season, netting a late winner on
his West Ham debut against Blackburn. He has not scored for Gianfranco
Zola's side this term but has continued his development with 22 appearances,
including seven starts. Sears accepts it may be some time before he fully
establishes himself as a regular starter at Upton Park and there have been
suggestions he could be sent out on loan to gain experience. Crystal Palace
have expressed an interest and Sears believes such a move could benefit his
career. "When you are not playing at West Ham, you just want to play
football and going on loan is something I would definitely be interested
in," Sears said in the East London Advertiser. "Some of the boys have come
back after going out on loan and you can see that it is helped - just
confidence-wise and just playing in front of thousands of people every

Sears added: "We have discussed what could happen at the start of next
season and I think the Championship is a good, strong level to go and
develop your football.
"For me, a London team would be nice, but if you have to go away from home,
you live with it." Sears is convinced he will rediscover his touch in front
of goal if he gets more opportunities in the starting XI. "I feel like I am
a goalscorer," he said. "It is hard not playing every game because you need
a little run in the team to get going, but once you get a goal, your
confidence is really high. "I think if I play a few games, I will have a

Warnock considering loan bid for Hammers youngster

Crystal Palace are considering a bid to bring West Ham's young striker
Freddie Sears to Selhurst Park on loan. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola is
believed to be ready to allow the talented teenager to leave Upton Park on a
temporary basis to gain greater first-team experience. Palace boss Neil
Warnock is looking to bring striking reinforcements to the club and is
pondering a possible move for Sears. "I will speak to (assistant boss) Mick
Jones and our chief scout about him and have a look at our scouting
reports," Warnock told the Croydon Advertiser. "Freddie Sears is the sort of
player that would interest us - we are looking for players of Premier League
quality and experience." Sears burst onto the scene last season with a debut
goal against Blackburn but has struggled to nail down a first-team spot this
term.

Green ready to plug gap
Hammers shot-stopper ready to take the No.1 shirt
Last updated: 21st May 2009

Robert Green insists he is ready make his first competitive appearance for
England if called upon by manager Fabio Capello. England are short of
goalkeeping options for next month's World Cup qualifying double header
against Kazakhstan and Andorra with a number of shot-stoppers out of action.
David James, Ben Foster and Chris Kirkland are all sidelined, meaning Green
is one of the leading contenders to add to his two caps along with the likes
of Scott Carson and former No.1 Paul Robinson.
Green knows he has an excellent chance of getting the nod from Capello
following a fine season for West Ham, although he is taking nothing for
granted and is not getting carried away by the prospect of filling in. "As
soon as Jamo was out I knew people would be looking around for a name but
I'm a bit too long in the tooth to get carried away," he told The
Independent. "One thing I've learnt about the new manager (Fabio Capello) is
he does not take any notice of anyone else, he is his own man. "But I will
be turning up - assuming I am picked - and will prepare to play, as I do
every time."
Green has paid tribute to West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola for his fine
season, saying his man-management style has filled all the players at Upton
Park with confidence.
"He has instilled confidence in everyone," he continued. "As a goalkeeper
you are reactive to what happens in front of you. "If the defence play well
that rubs off on you and vice versa. The defence has been largely unchanged,
which helps, so does the fact we play out from the back more. "The manager
has encouraged us to 'play football' and it's been a joy for everyone."

West Ham United: Premier League end-of-season report
How did West Ham perform this season – and what does manager Gianfranco Zola
need to address for 2009/10?
Telegraph
By John Ley
Last Updated: 6:24PM BST 21 May 2009

Overall performance
Consistent over the campaign, echoing last season's mid-table finish. West
Ham were doing OK under Alan Curbishley, and have improved under Gianfranco
Zola and, importantly, Steve Clarke. They have given youth a chance and it
is working, with West Ham playing attractive football, commendable given the
problems over ownership.

Mark: 6/10.

Knowing Zola from his Chelsea days, Cole finally achieved his potential to
the extent that he was recognised by England manager Fabio Capello. Even
though suspensions and injuries have threatened to disrupt his season, he
remains the club's leading scorer and now he has to carry it into next
season.

Loser: Dean Ashton
The striker's career, since arriving at Upton Park, has been blighted by
injury. Like Cole, an England call-up led to injury and this campaign has
seen him make just five appearances. He has yet to play for Zola, and must
be hoping the new campaign will herald a new dawn.

Summer transfer ins and outs
Zola has insisted he will still stick with his policy in nurturing youth and
in James Tomkins, Jack Collison, Savio Nsereko, Junior Stanislas, Mark Noble
and Josh Payne the future is promising. But he needs an experienced striker
and with Lucas Neill's future yet to be confirmed, possibly a top-class
defender.

Priority for 2009/10
Breaking into the top six will be hard, particularly if Zola is unable to
invest. So the future may rest on the slim shoulders of a host of kids and
the coaching talents of the manager and Clarke. Success in a cup competition
would go some way to enhancing Zola's managerial reputation.

ASHTON IS FOR SALE ..
The Mirror
By Darren Lewis 22/05/2009

West Ham will listen to offers for Dean Ashton this summer. The luckless
England striker has made just 51 appearances for the Hammers since joining
them from Norwich in January 2006, scoring 17 goals. Injuries have played
havoc with his Upton Park career and the Hammers were willing to accept a
decent offer for him in January before he suffered yet another setback. The
£7million frontman has played just four times this season after scoring
twice in West Ham's 2-1 win over Wigan on the opening day of the campaign
and has been out since September. Although he is now fit, Ashton was not
risked in West Ham's failed bid for Europe in case it jeopardised any
potential transfer. His boss Gianfranco Zola has repeatedly insisted Ashton
will spearhead the Hammers' attack alongside Carlton Cole next season. But
suitors willing to follow up their interest with hard cash could prise him
away. His injury problems at West Ham began with a broken ankle while on
England duty in August 2006, which forced him to miss all the 2006-07
season.
The popular marksman bounced back in August 2007 against Manchester City,
coming on as a second-half substitute. He made 35 league and cup appearances
in that campaign, scoring 11 goals. Ashton signed a new fiveyear contract
only a year ago, intended to keep him at the club until 2013. But his injury
curse returned when Ashton sprained his ankle in Zola's first training
session last September. Newcastle were interested in him last summer while
Aston Villa were keen in January. Now Everton - who have had to return Jo to
Manchester City because they cannot afford him - could move in. West Ham are
also set to send loan defender Radoslav Kovac back to Spartak Moscow this
summer. They are not prepared to pay the £6million the Russian club want for
the Czech Republic international.

West Ham goalkeeper Green appears to be the front runner to replace injured
No 1 David James as Ben Foster and Chris Kirkland are both sidelined. West
Brom's Scott Carson remains a possible alternative, but Albion's relegation
and his high-profile error when on duty in the crunch Euro 2008 qualifier
against Croatia may count against him. England's bid should sell passion,
not politicians Nevertheless, Green told the Indpependent: "As soon as Jamo

Whizzkid Savio will make Hammers a Euro force, says Nani
21 May 2009
East London Advertiser
EXCLUSIVE
By JONATHAN CLEGG

West Ham technical director Gianluca Nani insists that Savio Nsereko can
transform the club from Euro failures into top-six challengers next season.
The Hammers' hopes of securing a Europa League berth were extinguished in
last weekend's defeat at Everton, as a run of only two wins in the past nine
games proved costly. But Nani is convinced the Hammers can emerge as genuine
European contenders next season after tipping Germany Under-20 ace Savio to
make a major impact. He said: "This was a good season but we are confident
that next season we will be better. "Savio is a young player with a big
future. He's still a young boy and he's coming from another country, but we
are really confident about him."
Much was expected of the 19-year-old whizzkid when he joined the Hammers in
a possible club record deal in January - just days after Craig Bellamy's
£14m switch to Manchester City. Savio was touted as a ready-made replacement
for the Wales striker, but has struggled to make an impression in 10
first-team appearances - and has even lost his place to homegrown teenager
Junior Stanislas in recent weeks. But Nani has urged fans to be patient with
the former Brescia star, adding that Savio was not signed to replace
Bellamy, but to help West Ham develop a new style of attacking play. Nani
said: "Savio is not a replacement for Bellamy - he doesn't play the same
position and he's not that kind of player. At that time, we wanted to change
the way we were playing. "One of the good things about Gianfranco Zola is
that he can change the way we play in terms of formation - we've started to
play 4-3-2-1 and then 4-4-2 or 4-3-1-2. "Maybe next season it will be Ashton
and Cole [up front], which means a different way of playing. Savio will be
part of our future. "But he has not had one day of rest during the last year
- last summer, he was in the European Under-19 championships, then without
any rest he was back at Brescia, then in January he had no time off before
coming here. He needs time.

Offering Warnock A Helping Hand? You Cannot Be Serious!
The Games Gone Crazy

So Freddie Sears may be heading for Crystal Palace! The irony of us
entrusting a prized asset to the care of Neil Warnock is irresistible! Is
this our way of settling Warnock's compo claim perhaps, gifting Old Big Knob
a player who will shoot the Eagles into the Premier League?

Is Warnock really the man to develop Freddie? I can't think of anybody,
except for Big Spam, Megson and Curbishley, who is further away from the
West Ham and Zola philosophy on the game. Ball on the ground, neat
interchanging of passes, a focus on ball retention, developing skills...is
Neil Warnock really your man? I suppose it is a way of avoiding Sears having
his leg broken in a game against Palace but, beyond that, I'm struggling to
follow the logic. Maybe it is so he feels at home, playing in claret and
blue, or perhaps the primary concern is to keep him in London.

Personally, I'd rather see him entrusted to West Brom where they play the
game in the right way, even if it means relegation. Surely, if he is that
good, the goal shy Baggies would love him?

West Ham helping out Warnock? It's kind of like the Americans arming Saddam
Hussein and Bin Laden. Oh, hang on, that happened didn't it? Funny old world
isn't it?

Lending Freddie to Warnock feels like entrusting your teenage son to the
Catholic Church to me. Would you be happy for Neil to get his smutty paws on
our kid striker?

before discussing a new contract. The Evening Gazette says the 22-year-old,
whose contract runs out at the end of June, has attracted interest from
other Premier League clubs. Aston Villa and West Ham are among those who
have expressed an interest. A new Boro contract lies on the table, but Bates
has deferred opening discussions until after the final game against West
Ham. If he can not agree an extension with Boro, then he will be free to
sign for any other club on July 1 - though Boro will be entitled to claim
compensation.

West Ham's Collison warns Middlesbrough
22.05.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham want to deliver a final game victory to home fans against
Middlesbrough, says midfielder Jack Collison. The Wales international told
whufc.com: "We want to end the season on a high, especially at Upton Park in
front of our own fans as it's not nice to lose any game. "Unfortunately
we're not going to make Europe but we're going to look to put in a good
performance and end the season with a bit of a buzz."

Tony Cottee has spoken to WHUTV about who he believes is in the running for
Hammer of the Year
20.05.2009

With under 24 hours left to make your choice for Hammer of the Year 2008/09,
Tony Cottee has offered a timely hand to those still undecided about who
should get their vote.

Cottee knows better than most what it takes to be voted Hammer of the Year
after winning the award in the 1985/86 season, and he predicts this could be
one of the closest yet. Indeed if early indications are anything to go by he
could be right, as with over 8000 votes cast, there are just 300 votes
between the top three players.

"I think it is important to say how well a lot of the players have done.
Normally you get one outstanding candidate. Robert Green has dominated
things over the last two or three seasons.

"Before that, Carlos Tevez was the runaway leader and then further back Di
Canio was another player to have had an outstanding season. But I personally
think that there are five or six players that deserve a mention and are
going to pushing to win that award."

The Hammer of the Year will be announced at Sunday's Barclays Premier League
game with Middlesbrough, alongside Tony Carr's choice for Young Hammer of
the Year, with Cottee believing there is one runaway candidate Carr should
go for. He said: "There was a lot of talk at the end of last year about
Freddie Sears and quite rightly so after his goal against Blackburn.

"And of course James Tomkins is another lad whose progress we've been
monitoring and his development since he's been in the team has been
fantastic. The more games James plays the better he becomes and I think
potentially he is a future England centre-half.

"But I'll be astonished if Jack Collison doesn't win it as he's emerged from
nowhere."

Hammers off to China
KUMB.com

By: Staff Writer

West Ham Unitd have been provisionally confirmed as one of the four teams
taking place in this summer's Asia Cup. As revealed here on KUMB.com last
month the Hammers had to wait until their fate in the league this season was
decided as the Asia Cup dates clashed with the first round of Europa League
qualification. With United's European chances dashed as a result of
consecutive defeats against Liverpool and Everton the path to enter the Asia
Trophy was opened - and Gianfranco Zola's team have now been provisionally
named as one of four entrants alongside and fellow Premier League outfits
Tottenham and Hull, who qualify on the strength of their league position
last November, and local side Beijing Guoan. The tournament will take place
between Wednesday, July 29th and Saturday, August 1st in Beijing's Worker's
Stadium. The Premier League have refused to comment until the end of the
current campaign is completed, with the final round of matches taking place
this Sunday.

Hammers lead Bates chase
West Ham hope to land Boro starlet
Last updated: 20th May 2009
SSN

West Ham United have leapt to the front of the queue to land Middlesbrough's
Matthew Bates, skysports.com understands. The highly versatile 22-year-old
has been one of the few success stories for Boro in an otherwise
disappointing season, which looks set to end in relegation. Bates, who has
fought his way back from three separate cruciate knee ligament operations,
has played at right-back, centre-back and central midfield this season and
has shone for Gareth Southgate in the latter part of the campaign. However,
the Teesside born star is out-of-contract in the summer and he looks set to
leave after rejecting Boro's offer of an extension. Skysports.com
understands that West Ham have now made their move and are keen to tie him
down on a long-term deal. As Bates is under 24 Boro would be due
compensation, but it would likely be nowhere near his market value. West Ham
are trying to do a quick deal as they know there is a huge amount of
interest emerging for Bates. Both Wigan and Everton would like to take him
to the North West, while if Bates wished to stay closer to home, Newcastle
and Sunderland are keeping close tabs on him. Coincidentally, Bates will get
the chance to impress West Ham this Sunday when Boro travel to Upton Park
for the final game of the season.

West Ham Lead Queue For Middlesbrough Standout Matthew Bates - Reports
There will be extra focus on the talented youngster when Boro take on the
Hammers in what could very well be their last 90 minutes of Premier League
football for quite a while on Sunday...
21 May 2009 03:39:23
Goal.com

West Ham United are reported to be leading the race to sign Middlesbrough
starlet Matthew Bates in the summer. According to skysports.com, the Hammers
have already put in a lot of groundwork as they look to get a crucial edge
on a whole host of Premier League sides who have taken a keen interest in
the versatile 22-year-old. Bates has been one of the few bright spots in
Boro's season, having filled in admirably at right-back, centre-back and
central midfield in an effort to keep the club afloat. Following their
failure to beat Aston Villa last weekend, however, the consensus is that the
Riverside outfit are all but relegated, though even if they manage to pull
off a great escape on the final day of the season there are serious doubts
over whether the England Under-20 would be willing to extend his
summer-expiring contract. Wigan Athletic, Everton, Newcastle United and
Sunderland have all also been credited with a strong interest in the
Teesside club's youth product.

Robert Green senses chance to establish himself in Fabio Capello's plans
Green favourite for England return after David James injury
'All you can do is be ready' says West Ham keeper
Jamie Jackson The Guardian, Thursday 21 May 2009

Robert Green has been England's great spectator since first being called up,
under Sven-Goran Eriksson, more than five years ago. But now, following
David James's withdrawal from next month's World Cup qualifiers against
Kazakhstan and Andorra, the West Ham United goalkeeper is in prime position
to show Fabio Capello that he can and should dislodge the Portsmouth man as
England's first choice.

Green certainly believes that he can be England No1, even when James is fit.
"Oh yeah, of course, you have belief in your own ability," he says. "And
it's always been the aim to be the best, to improve to the level of the
pinnacle and [playing for England is] certainly it. Whether I get the
chance in the next couple of [games] is another matter. If I do then
hopefully I'll be ready to take those chances."

English football is at a curious juncture – the country hosts the world's
most watched domestic league but the Premier League's dominant four clubs
do not have an English first-choice goalkeeper between them. Ben Foster is
Edwin van der Sar's deputy at Manchester United, but he is injured, and no
English keeper is regularly playing Champions League football. This makes
Capello's task – filling what has become England's problem position – even
trickier. Even when James, who is due to have shoulder surgery, is fit, he
can make high-profile mistakes. Such problems have affected his
international career in the way that they have recently blighted the
fortunes of Paul Robinson and Scott Carson.

"It's changed," says Green. "It's not like the old days. In previous times,
you'd say: 'Well, who's the keeper for the best team?' And at the time [it'd
be] Liverpool, Nottingham Forest when Peter Shilton was there, and teams
like that. It's very much different when you can look at it and say, 'He's
won a league medal and European Cup, so Shilton deserves to be the England
keeper.'

"It doesn't work like that at the moment. Nowadays you say: 'Well, who's the
best team in the country? Manchester United. But Van der Sar's not English.
So who's the second-best team? Liverpool. [Pepe] Reina's not English. Who's
third best? Chelsea. Well Petr Cech's not [English].'"

Green's international experience is limited to a half against Colombia in
2005 and 45 minutes against Spain this season. Both matches were friendlies.
In between he "ruptured a groin which everyone had a good laugh at apart
from me" against Belarus during an England B international in May 2006. That
caused him to miss that summer's World Cup and he has been ignored to such
an extent since then that he wore gloves inscribed self-depreciatingly with
"England's No6".

"Not playing is frustrating, you want to play in every game," he says. "But
it's the life of a keeper, you'd rather be on the pitch than off. But going
away with England, no matter how much going away and not playing is
frustrating, it can be taken with a dose of salt as it's at such a high
level."

Capello obviously likes James; until his withdrawal he was the only player
to start all 13 of the Italian's games as the head coach. Green, for his
part, plays the diplomatic pro when speaking of the 38-year-old, peppering
the conversation with references to how "tremendously well Jamo has done
since he came back in" following Carson's demise during the 3-2 defeat
against Croatia in late 2007, which denied England a place at Euro 2008.

James has performed well enough, adds Green, for it to be "not really a
question as to who plays. There's no begrudging that but also in the same
respect he's pushing 39 and that shows how long you have got as an
opportunity to wait".

If Green, at 29, were to be handed his chance in June and takes it, he could
realistically be contemplating five to 10 years in the England team. "Yeah.
As I say all you can do is be ready. If someone were to get a chance against
Kazakhstan and Andorra then all you can do is give everything you can and if
Jamo comes back and plays then so be it. But that person will be wanting to
make their mark."

Green, surely, deserves that chance.

Interview: Freddie Sears on why he wants to leave West Ham on loan
20 May 2009
Freddie Sears
EXCLUSIVE
By JONATHAN CLEGG
East London Advertiser

Upton Park was silent as Freddie Sears lined up his shot. The teenage
striker stole a quick glance at his opponent, waited for the ball to drop
before finally producing a gentle lob. His eyes followed the ball as it
arced through the air and dropped into the net. But on this occasion, there
was no roar from the crowd. Sears did not wheel away in celebration or raise
his arms in a crossed Hammers salute. Instead, the 19-year-old shrugged his
shoulders, retrieved the wayward effort and continued the game of tennis he
had been playing with local school kids on a makeshift court at the club's
stadium. Sears was doing his bit for the club's multi-sports access and
retention scheme (MARS), which is run with Newham Council and the Premier
League, and which saw hundreds of East London youngsters descend on Upton
Park last week to take part in athletics, basketball, handball and a host of
other Olympic sports. As a promising tennis player during his schooldays,
Sears was instructing the children on the finer points of hitting a
forehand, and the former Havering doubles champion appeared to be enjoying
this chance to relive some past glories. But as he took a quick breather
after an hour and a half of energetic action, it was tempting to wonder what
Sears would give for a similar run-out on Sunday afternoon. It is more than
15 months since the Hammers hotshot first served notice of his star
potential by scoring a debut winner against Blackburn within six minutes of
appearing as a substitute. West Ham legends Trevor Brooking, Geoff Hurst and
Billy Bonds were in the stands on that memorable afternoon last February,
when the teenager looked set to add a new chapter to the club's storied
history of nurturing young talent.
Yet Sears' career has since stalled. Despite a long-term injury to Dean
Ashton and the sale of Craig Bellamy in January, the forward has started
just four league matches this season and has spent most of the campaign
kicking his heels on the bench. It is a situation that Sears has found
frustrating, though he maintains he has not lost confidence in his ability
to make the grade at his boyhood club. "I feel like I'm a goalscorer," Sears
said. "It's hard not playing every game because you need a little run in the
team to get going, but once you get a goal, your confidence is really high.
"I think if I play a few games, I'll have a chance to show what I can really
do."
The search for regular football could force Sears to leave Upton Park next
season. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola has admitted that the youngster would
benefit from a spell on loan and Sears is keen to emulate fellow academy
aces James Tomkins and Junior Stanislas, who have graduated to the
first-team following stints at Derby and Southend respectively. He said:
"When you're not playing at West Ham, you just want to play football and
going on loan is something I'd definitely be interested in. "Some of the
boys have come back after going out on loan and you can see that it's helped
- just confidence-wise and just playing in front of thousands of people
every week."

The striker was the subject of several loan enquiries this season, but West
Ham's paucity of attacking options meant Zola would not sanction a deal. Now
the manager's stance has changed and Sears is already mulling over the
possible destinations for next season. "We've discussed what could happen at
the start of next season and I think the Championship is a good, strong
level to go and develop your football. "For me, a London team would be nice
- a team from around here. But if you have to go away from home, you live
with it. But I think there's some good football in the Championship. "I've
looked to go out this year, but there's not been too many players around and
it's been hard for the manager to let me go. But it's hard only playing 15
minutes here and there and there's not many reserve games."
As Sears sends another forehand crashing into the net, it is clear that the
extra time at his disposal has not been spent on the tennis court. "I play
now and again with my brother, but not too much these days," he laughs.
"It's mostly football, football, football now." If Sears has his way and
gets regular first-team football next year, he might have to put down the
racket for good. Freddie Sears was participating in the multi-sports access
and retention scheme (MARS), run by West Ham and Newham Council, in
association with the Premier League/PFA Community Fund.

Neil Warnock defends Manchester United's right to play weakened team
Kaveh Solhekol
The Times

Neil Warnock has told Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough to
concentrate on their own problems and forget about which team Manchester
United will field against Hull City on Sunday. The former Sheffield United
manager has not forgiven Sir Alex Ferguson for selecting a weakened team
against West Ham United on the final day of the 2006-07 season. West Ham won
1-0 at Old Trafford in May 2007 – a result which kept them up and relegated
the Yorkshire club.

Ferguson is expected to play another weakened team at the KC Stadium, even
though his controversial decision could lead to Hull staying up and two from
Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough going down.

"What will they do [to United]? Fine them two bob? Slap their wrist?"
Warnock, who now manages Crystal Palace, said. "It just won't happen. It's
just the luck of the draw. It's just how it happens, that's life. At the end
of the day Newcastle still have to get a result at Villa and Sunderland have
to get a result, possibly. They have to worry about themselves."

A report this morning suggested that Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough
could sue United if Hull overcome a weakened side to survive at their
expense. "I can't see people suing Sir Alex and his club, it is just one of
those things," Warnock said. "I have every respect for him, I always have
over the years - although I lost a little respect for him that day [when
Sheffield United were relegated]. But I am sure that doesn't bother him or
anyone else."

The chances of Newcastle being relegated will increase dramatically if Hull
win. "It is disappointing when you do see they [Manchester United] are not
playing their top men but Sir Alex is single-minded and I don't think for
one minute he will be concerned, when he picks his team, what happened to
Neil Warnock or what happens to Alan Shearer or Phil Brown," Warnock said.

"Manchester United's youngsters can always get a result against anybody on
their day and the thing Hull haven't got is [Carlos] Tevez. He was a
world-class player playing for West Ham that day and I don't think they
would have beaten Manchester United that day if they hadn't had Tevez. "

FORMER ENGLAND KEEPER ASSESSES THE GOALKEEPING SITUATION
Nigel Martyn is backing Robert Green to replace David James
By Mark Shail May 20, 2009
GiveMeFootball.com

Former England international Nigel Martyn believes West Ham goalkeeper
Robert Green is the man to replace first choice England stopper David James
for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra.

James is sidelined while he undergoes surgery for a long-standing shoulder
problem and, with Manchester United keeper Ben Foster also ruled out through
injury, Green, Paul Robinson, Chris Kirkland and Joe Hart are all in
contention to replace the 38-year-old.

Portsmouth goalkeeper James is the only player to start all 13 matches under
Fabio Capello but he has decided to go ahead with the operation so he is fit
for the start of next season.

"It's something I've had for about 18 months and I want to be fit for the
start of next season with Portsmouth," said James.

"With starting every game under Mr Capello, I would have liked to have
continued that. But the bigger picture is that because of the nature of the
injury, I could have sustained a dislocation at any given point and been out
for longer.

"I'll miss a couple of World Cup matches but it is a good time to have the
operation. I always trust that England can do well – even without me."

Former Leeds and Everton star Martyn, who won 23 caps at international
level, believes James' enforced absence is a real opportunity for somebody
to stake their claim to be a regular starter for England.

"I don't think the goalkeeping position is a problem for Mr Capello, but it
is more a case of 'is he really sure who he wants to be his no.1'. David
James has played the games and, over the last three years at Portsmouth, has
been a lot more consistent. But there is always that thing –is he going to
do something silly?" said Martyn.

"You need to rely on your goalkeeper and, in that respect, I don't think it
is a forgone conclusion who will be the no.1 at the World Cup in South
Africa.

"The opportunity is there for somebody to grab it. What tends to happen with
England goalkeepers is that there is a certain pecking order so I would
imagine Robert Green will get the chance against Kazakhstan. Then it is up
to him. He would get my vote."

Tottenham set to join West Ham in China
Reports in China claim Tottenham will join West Ham and Hull in the Premier
League Asia Trophy in Beijing from July 29 to Aug 1.
Telegraph

Last Updated: 10:39AM BST 20 May 2009

China State Media have announced that Spurs will compete with Chinese Super
League side Beijing Guoan in the fourth version of the biennial tournament
at the Worker's Stadium. Chelsea were reported to have been invited to take
part but have decided to tour North America instead. Sport on television
Premier League champions Manchester United will play in China, but will skip
the main two cities of Beijing and Shanghai and finish their Asian tour with
a match against Hangzhou in Zhejiang on July 26. Meanwhile, Spurs winger
Aaron Lennon could miss England's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against
Kazakhstan and Andorra due to a long-standing groin problem.
Lennon has not played since the 1-0 home win over West Bromwich Albion at
the beginning of May, and missed the 0-0 draw at Everton and 3-1 home win
over Manchester City with the injury. Lennon could have been available for
England at the U21 Championships alongside team mate Tom Huddlestone, but
now both players are likely to miss the tournament through injury. Lennon
has been outstanding this season, scoring five goals in 41 matches for Spurs
in the league and in Europe this season. On Tuesday he was named the Young
Player of the Year and Player of the Season at Tottenham.

Looking ahead for Fred
WHUFC.com
Freddie Sears is still very much part of Gianfranco Zola's long-term plans
19.05.2009

Gianfranco Zola has backed Freddie Sears to make a big impact in the future
with West Ham Untied. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a year of development
under Zola's tutorship, making seven starts and 15 substitute appearances in
all competitions this campaign. But with Dean Ashton expected to return to
full training for pre-season, competition for places will once again be
fierce and Zola believes that a temporary spell learning his trade with
another club may suit the Hornchurch-born forward.
"I think that the right thing to do for him will be to go on loan to play,"
Zola said. "He has worked hard here but has not been playing enough,
sometimes ten minutes, sometimes a full game. "Probably he never got what he
wanted. He has improved as a player but he needs to play regularly."
Zola has seen first hand the benefit a loan move can have on young players
to have graduated from the Academy. James Tomkins played eight games during
a six-week loan spell with Derby County earlier this season and has been a
revelation since Zola bought him back into the first team. Likewise, England
Under-20 international Jordan Spence has just benefitted from playing 21
games while on loan at League One Leyton Orient. Now Zola is predicting the
same scenario for the 19-year-old Sears. "Unfortunately here it is difficult
for him. Next season he will have the possibility of going on loan and to
prove himself. "Then he is will come back here as we believe that he is an
important player for us in future."

Zola backs World Cup bid
WHUFC.com
England have the support of Gianfranco Zola as they try to earn hosting
duties for the 2018 or 2022 finals
19.05.2009

Gianfranco Zola has thrown his weight behind England's bid to host the 2018
or 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The West Ham United manager filmed a special interview that was used as part
of the Football Association's bid launch at Wembley Stadium. Among those
also taking part were England manager Fabio Capello, the Prime Minister
Gordon Brown, FA Chairman, Lord Triesman, Sir Bobby Charlton, David Beckham
and Wayne Rooney. The FA's President HRH Prince William also sent a special
message of support.

Zola said: "If you think that I came when I was 30 [to England] and I played
for seven years in Chelsea until I was 37 and I wasn't planning to stay that
long. That tells you a lot about my appreciation about the place. The
stadiums are fantastic. The crowd is even better and the quality of football
right now you are talking about is the best in Europe.

"It is just a wonderful place to play football," he added, as he stood
pitch-side at the Boleyn Ground and showed the film crew around the famous
old stadium he has called home since taking charge of the club back in
September. "I think it would be a great place to play a World Cup over here.
I believe there all the perfect conditions to be the place."

Other nations who have expressed interest in hosting world football's
showpiece event in 2018 or 2022 are Australia, Belgium-Netherlands (joint
bid), Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Portugal-Spain (joint bid), Russia, USA,
Qatar (2022 only) and South Korea (2022 only).

Zola was not the only West Ham representative backing the bid, with Sir
Geoff Hurst also having his say on the nation's chances. The former striker
believes there is every chance that a new generation of England
internationals will get the chance to experience what he did when he
represented the country on home soil back in 1966.

"I think we have a realistic chance; we are a major football nation,
everything is in place, we have the expertise, the stadiums, the
infrastructure, the teams, the supporters, it's safer than it's ever been
and we're ready now," said Sir Geoff, who naturally had to relive again his
memories of scoring a hat-trick in the 4-2 final win against West Germany.

"We saw how much things have changed when we hosted the European
Championship in 1996 and it will be even bigger in 2018. We have to have the
whole nation behind us to get the World Cup here as it will be a national
event - not just for football people. In 1966 there were a lot of people who
were not into football before the finals, but they were fans for life by the
time it had finished."

FIFA will confirm the hosts of both World Cups in December 2010.

Green laments hard luck
WHUFC.com
Robert Green believes Saturday's game-changing moment could have been
avoided
19.05.2009

Robert Green believes referee Phil Dowd could have spared West Ham United
defender James Tomkins a red card in Saturday's Barclays Premier League
defeat by Everton at Goodison Park.

Tomkins was sent-off by Dowd after fouling Toffees midfielder Tim Cahill
inside the Hammers' penalty area, ostensibly for denying the Australian a
clear goalscoring opportunity.

However, England goalkeeper Green believes he would have pounced on the ball
before Cahill had the chance to apply his finish, thereby negating the need
for Dowd to banish Tomkins from the field of play for the first time in his
professional career.

Louis Saha equalised from the resulting penalty after Radoslav Kovac had
earlier given Gianfranco Zola's team the lead with a swerving 35-yard
special. West Ham battled gamely on with ten men, but further goals from
Joseph Yobo and Saha ended the visitors' hopes of reaching next season's
UEFA Europa League.

"We weren't playing particularly well but we were limiting their chances and
Kova had scored one of those goals where it moved all over the place," said
Green. "He [Cahill] came through and he's [Tomkins] made contact. It's a
penalty but I don't know whether he's got a goalscoring chance because I
feel I would have got their first.

"The referee has got to make a split-second decision and it's disappointing
because it's changed the course of the game. Obviously they got their tails
up and we conceded another goal not even five minutes into the second half
and that put us up against it. It's disappointing because it was avoidable."

While Green conceded that Dowd's decision to send-off Tomkins had been the
game's pivotal moment, the goalkeeper admitted that Everton had worked hard
for their victory.

Hopes that the Toffees would be distracted by their FA Cup final date with
Chelsea and the fact they had already secured a European place for 2009/10
were extinguished as David Moyes' team produced a typically and impressively
resolute display.

While Saha was clinical, taking his tally against West Ham this season to
four in two matches, West Ham passed up a host of clear-cut chances to score
themselves, most notably through Diego Tristan, Luis Boa Morte and the
returning Carlton Cole.

"They put their effort in just as much as we did," said Green. "The
difference was that they had a little bit more quality up front to take
their chances. If you look at it, at 2-1 we were having more chances than
they were and didn't take them, which is the story of our season.

"We've been playing games and chances have been coming along but we've not
been taking them so, in that respect, it's disappointing."

With a top-seven finish now beyond their reach, the Hammers go into Sunday's
game against almost-relegated Middlesbrough eyeing a success that would take
them over the 50-point barrier for the first time since 2005/06.

To do so, Green has called the club's forwards to find their shooting boots
one last time before heading off for their summer holidays.

"We've got to draw on Sunday to get the same amount of points as we got last
season," said the 29-year-old. "It's a good job that we got our points when
we did. We went on that run and had a spell where we took our chances. Coley
was on fire scoring goals but, other than that, we've really struggled to
put teams away. I can't remember the last time we scored three goals in a
game - Barnsley in the FA Cup in January or Portsmouth on Boxing Day in the
league.

"We've nicked a lot of games 1-0 and nicked enough games like Wigan, Stoke
and others where we've just clung on and defended for our lives and done a
magnificent job of defending. When we've managed to nick a goal, we've hung
in there more often than not and that's why we are where we are."

Widdowson departs
WHUFC.com
West Ham United youngster Joe Widdowson has made a permanent switch to
Grimsby Town
19.05.2009

Joe Widdowson has signed a three-year deal with Grimbsy Town after a
successful loan spell at the League Two outfit earlier this season.

The out of contract 20-year-old Academy product made 20 league appearances
for Grimsby, scoring one goal, after joining for three months at the turn of
the year. The left-back had begun the season well at West Ham United,
earning a place on the club's pre-season tour of North America and
ultimately marking David Beckham during the MLS All-Stars match in Toronto
last July.

Although on the bench for the League Cup tie with Macclesfield Town last
August, Widdowson never featured for the West Ham first team in a senior
encounter, but also made three loan appearances for Rotherham United during
another loan spell in early 2008. He said: "Having been to Grimsby, I know
the place, I know the club and it wasn't a difficult decision. There were a
couple of other clubs interested but they couldn't really guarantee me
regular football."

Fred on his way

Gianfranco Zola has revealed that Freddie Sears could spend next season out
on loan.

Sears, who has failed to score a single goal in his 22 appearances this
season - or since his debut goal against Blackburn 14 months ago - has been
used sparingly this term by Zola, and has more often than not been cast
behind Diego Tristan and David Di Michele in the first team pecking order.

Many fans have commented on Sears' failure to push on since that electric
debut performance in March 2008 and it has often been suggested that the
youngster would benefit from a spell on loan in one of the lower divisions -
much like the then 18-year-old Jermain Defoe did back in October 2000.

It is a sentiment with which Zola appears to agree; talking to whufc.com
today, he said:

"I think that the right thing for him will be to go on loan. He has worked
hard here but has not been playing enough; sometimes ten minutes, sometimes
a full game.

"He has improved as a player but he needs to play regularly. Unfortunately
here it is difficult for him. Next season he will have the possibility of
going on loan and to prove himself."

Sears came into the first team reckoning having scored virtually a goal per
game at reserve and youth level - much like Carlton Cole did when breaking
through at Chelsea. Like Cole, Sears' career appears to have hit a temporary
stumbling block - but one from which he will be hoping to recover soon.

Zola unafraid of tough calls
Hammers boss unconcerned with making decisions over contracts
By Richard Bailey Last updated: 19th May 2009

Gianfranco Zola insists that he will not be afraid to make tough decisions
when it comes to his players' futures at the end of the season. The West Ham
manager has guided the club to ninth in the table and, although European
football is now out of the question, there has still been plenty to shout
about at Upton Park this season. However, the most difficult part of the
job, where players' futures are on the line, is approaching and the Italian
knows the importance of the next few months. The former Chelsea forward is
yet to decide who has done enough to warrant a new deal but he is confident
his side will begin next season in better shape. "I have a rough idea but it
is too early to say and things might go in one way or another," he told the
club's official website. "Even without anybody, I am sure that the team will
be better and don't forget that we will have (Dean) Ashton back and that
will be a big thing for us. Plus all the players will be better next season.
"Obviously the club pays me for those moments and I have to take the
decision and I will do that with the interest of the club to take the club
forward. "When the moment comes I will make it. "It is no problem to make
the decision. I am motivated by the fact that I want to make the team and
club better and I will take the decisions bearing that in mind. "I will be
all right, I know it is part of the job."
Meanwhile Zola confirmed that 19-year-old striker Freddie Sears is likely to
go out on loan next term after 15 of his 21 appearances came from the bench
this season.
"He has worked hard here, but has not been playing enough, sometimes 10
minutes, sometimes a full game, he added. "Probably he never got what he
wanted. He has improved as a player but he needs to play regularly.
"Unfortunately here it is difficult for him. Next season he will have the
possibility of going on loan and to prove himself.
"Then he will come back here as we believe that he is an important player
for us in future."

Grimsby seal defender deal
Widdowson happy with choice to stay at Blundell Park permanently
Last updated: 19th May 2009

Grimsby Town have completed the signing of Joe Widdowson on a three-year
contract from West Ham United. Widdowson impressed on loan at Blundell Park
in the second half of the season and made 20 appearances for the League Two
club. He was not offered a new deal by the Hammers and is confident he has
made the right choice in deciding to stick with Grimsby. "It's very pleasing
to sign here permanently," Widdowson told the club's official website. "I
really enjoyed my time here on loan from January until the end of the
season, so it's good to be here for the next few years. "I've been back at
West Ham for the past couple of weeks and they aren't going to offer me a
contract there."Having been to Grimsby I know the place, I know the club and
it wasn't a difficult decision. "There was a couple of other clubs that were
interested in me, but they couldn't really guarantee me regular football
like I was getting at Grimsby." Meanwhile, Andy Taylor has left Grimsby by
mutual consent having not played a first-team game since last October.

Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Hull City will contest the Premier
League Asia Trophy in Beijing from July 29 to Aug. 1, according to Chinese
state media.
The three English Premier League clubs will play Chinese Super League side
Beijing Guoan in the fourth version of the biennial tournament at the
Worker's Stadium, the Xinhua news agency reported citing organisers. Hull,
however, are still embroiled in the battle against relegation - to be
concluded on Monday - and a Premier League spokesman said by telephone late
last week they were not yet ready to release details of the clubs or venue.
Chelsea, who have developed strong links with China over the last few years,
were reported to have been invited to take part but have decided to tour
North America instead. Premier League champions Manchester United will play
in China but will skip the main two cities of Beijing and Shanghai and round
out their Asian tour with a match against Hangzhou in Zhejiang on July 26.

Robert Green leaps from No 6 to No 1 in England goalkeeping charts
The Times
Matt Hughes, Deputy Football Correspondent

Robert Green's journey from self-styled "England No 6" to the nation's
first-choice No 1 is likely to be completed next month. The West Ham United
goalkeeper is in line to start England's World Cup qualifiers against
Kazakhstan and Andorra, on June 6 and 10 respectively, after David James was
ruled out. James has elected to have shoulder surgery today in a bid to be
fit for the start of next season.

Fabio Capello is also planning to recall Paul Robinson to his squad after
the former England goalkeeper played an important role in steering Blackburn
Rovers away from relegation this season, but Green is in pole position to
take over from James. The 29-year-old has made a good impression in training
despite winning only one cap under the Italian, playing for 45 minutes in
the 2-0 friendly international defeat by Spain in February, when he conceded
one of the goals.

Capello's concern about the lack of goalkeepers at his disposal is shown by
the fact that he has picked James to start in all of England's 13 matches
since he took over as manager, with a paucity of options exacerbated by many
of the candidates' susceptibility to injury. Ben Foster (thumb), Scott
Carson (hand) and Chris Kirkland (back) are injured, leaving Green and
Robinson as Capello's only realistic options.

Carson is close to a return, but Capello may be forced to call up Joe Hart
from the under-21s, despite the fact that the Manchester City goalkeeper has
not played a Barclays Premier League match since January.

Capello is frustrated by James's untimely absence but was consulted by the
Portsmouth goalkeeper before he elected to have surgery and agreed that it
was better for him to miss next month's qualifiers against the lesser lights
in group six than England's matches against Croatia in September and Ukraine
in October.

Green's probable elevation represents a remarkable transformation after he
was repeatedly overlooked by Capello. The former Norwich City goalkeeper had
to wait four years between his first cap, a second-half appearance in a
friendly against Colombia in 2005, and his second against Spain.

Capello ignored him entirely for his first year in charge, leading Green to
become so exasperated that he wore gloves with the words "England's No 6"
stitched into them for a Premier League match against Birmingham City last
season, the first occasion on which he was watched by the England manager.

Green was adamant afterwards that he was poking fun at himself rather than
Capello, who does not appear to have harboured a grudge.

Capello has also been impressed with Robinson's performances as Blackburn
have climbed to safety, especially as he appears to have lost some weight
and improved his general level of fitness. Robinson, 29, has not played for
his country since being blamed for Russia's winner in the European
Championship qualifying defeat in Moscow 18 months ago, but has been named
in several of Capello's squads and could return to the starting line-up if
Green fails to make the most of his opportunity.

Capello is bracing himself for a confrontation with several Premier League
managers before naming his squad for the World Cup double- header next week
because he fears some will seek to withdraw their players, blaming injuries.

The England manager may also be concerned that Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafael
Benítez, the Manchester United and Liverpool managers respectively, will
attempt to pull out several of their players, citing fatigue at the end of a
long season.

Capello allowed most of United's players to miss last year's post-season
trip to Trinidad & Tobago after their Champions League exertions, but will
be less sympathetic this time around and is determined to take a
full-strength squad to Kazakhstan.

Five for the future

Chris Kirkland (Wigan Athletic)
Played for England Under-21 but a one-cap wonder for the seniors, as a
substitute in the friendly against Greece in August 2006. His debut before
the age of 30 won £10,000 each for a family syndicate who had backed him to
succeed. Injury-prone.

Manuel Almunia (Arsenal)
As English as Manuel, the hapless waiter in Fawlty Towers, but could qualify
next month through his five-year residency here. Not capped by Spain and has
expressed an interest in playing for Fabio Capello. A spectacular
shot-stopper.

Joe Hart (Manchester City)
Appeared for England Under-19 and Under-21 but has also won only one cap, in
the friendly against Trinidad & Tobago in Port of Spain last June. His
career at Manchester City has stalled since the arrival of Shay Given from
Newcastle United in January.

Joe Lewis (Peterborough United)
England Under-21 player who earned a surprise call-up from Capello in May
last year for England's friendlies against the United States and Trinidad &
Tobago. Unused substitute for both games.

Ben Alnwick (Tottenham Hotspur)
Had loan spells with Luton Town, Leicester City and Carlisle United. Made
his debut for Tottenham in Carling Cup semi-final, second leg away to
Burnley in January but could not displace Heurelho Gomes on a regular basis.

Is Robert Green good enough for England?
Thet Imes

Matt Hughes writes today that Robert Green is in line to start for England
in their World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra. Formerly the
national team's self-styled sixth-choice goalkeeper, the West Ham United
player has found that injuries to others have propelled him to the front of
the queue. At 29 Foster is hardly a player for the future. He has won only
two international caps and only three seasons ago was playing Championship
football with Norwich City. He has impressed, however, in West Ham's recent
rise up the Premier League table and has reportedly done well in training
for England. So, what do you think? Is the man who once stitched "England's
No 6" into his gloves up to the challenge of being their No 1?

Keeper Crisis? England will still be in safe hands, Fabio...By Matt Lawton
Last updated at 1:49 AM on 20th May 2009
Daily Mail

The mood at the Football Association suggested the loss of David James and
Ben Foster to injury did not amount to a crisis. 'We only regret Manuel
Almunia does not yet have his British passport because now we could play him
against Kazakhstan and nobody would complain,' joked one member of Fabio
Capello's staff. England's manager remains confident in the English
goalkeepers who remain available and he is now expected to select Paul
Robinson as well as West Ham's Robert Green and Scott Carson in his squad
for next month's World Cup qualifiers away to Kazakhstan and home to
Andorra.
Joe Hart is another option, but the young Manchester City keeper has not
been playing first-team football since Shay Given moved from Newcastle in
January and Capello thinks it more prudent to leave him with Stuart Pearce's
Under 21 side. Chris Kirkland could also have earned a recall had he not
been injured, but Capello remains relaxed enough about the situation when
Green and Robinson have been performing so well for their respective clubs.
James, who misses out because of shoulder surgery, has started all 13 of
Capello's England matches, limiting Foster, Green, Carson and Hart to one
substitute appearance apiece.
But Capello had Robinson watched when Blackburn went to Chelsea last weekend
- something that should please Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce - and he will
be in contention for a first appearance since winning his 41st cap in
October 2007, even if Green would seem to be the favourite. It was only in
February, in the friendly against Spain, that Green won the second of his
two caps. It's England's No 6: West Ham keeper Robert Green raised a few
laughs with these gloves but it's getting serious for him now as he is in
contention for Fabio Capello's next two World Cup qualifiers following
injuries to David James and Ben Foster
Capello's scouts have noted how Robinson looks fitter and trimmer than he
perhaps was in the past and Allardyce insists the 29-year-old's form is back
and that his confidence is restored. 'Paul is the best English keeper in the
country at the moment,' he said. 'Fabio should have had someone watching us
in our last home game against Portsmouth. If he didn't, he hasn't done his
job right. 'He'd have seen a much better performance than he did from David
James. 'He's back to his top-end performances and he's shown it consistently
over the last eight to 10 games. 'Even the games we've lost heavily he's
stopped us losing by an even greater margin with his performances, like
Liverpool and Arsenal. He is right up there with all the other top
goalkeepers I've worked with.'
Robinson said: 'I'm feeling good at the moment. I feel like my form is
coming right back to the top now. Obviously I had a dip in confidence and it
affected my form.
'But I know what I'm capable of and I still think I've got more to come. I
can only go from strength to strength. I'm very pleased with my decision to
come to Blackburn and staying in the Premier League justifies that. 'I've
honestly not really thought about England. I'm just concentrating on playing
well here. Enjoying my football again is the most important thing and I'm
doing that.'

Australia captain, 31, is out of contract in the summer and West Ham want to

club would like him to take a cut. Everton had shown interest, with his
close friend Tim Cahill in their ranks, but his wages were too big for them
also and Neill looks likely to head abroad.

WHEATER MISSES BORO SURVIVAL BATTLE
Daily Express
Wednesday May 20,2009
By Niell Hickman Have your say(0)

MIDDLESBROUGH will be without defensive linchpin David Wheater for Sunday's
all-or-nothing clash at West Ham, but that could be a blessing in disguise
as it means he will get a proper break this summer. Manager Gareth Southgate
will pull Wheater out of the European Under-21 Championships in Sweden as
the player must undergo knee surgery.Southgate says his centre-half
desperately requires a period of rest and recuperation, and also has serious
questions over the value of the finals for England's Under-21 players,
especially for stars such as Wheater and Aston Villa striker Gabriel
Agbonlahor, who have had long, hard seasons at the top. "David will need
surgery in the summer so he will miss the Under-21 championship and that's
unfortunate for him," said Southgate. "The break will do him the world of
good and it does all players good to have time away from football over the
summer. If you're going away with the full international team then that's a
fantastic honour, but I'm not convinced those levels below the full team are
as worthwhile. "I may have a different view on that to other people because
I didn't play at any other level other than full. But many of the players
going to the Under-21 finals will have played a lot of matches this season.
"Look at someone like Agbonlahor who has had a season that has gone from
Aston Villa's European games last August and now he is being asked to play
until the end of June. For me, in terms of David Wheater's welfare and
progression he is already playing against the best players in the world, so
I don't think it will do any harm to have a rest. "It's different for Adam
Johnson or Andrew Taylor because they haven't played that many matches this
season. Adam will view it as exciting, but David has played every game for
two seasons. Andrew has missed big chunks of both seasons while Adam has not
played as many first-team games as he would have liked. So it's different
for those two.
"It's a difficult thing for any player because you want to play for your
international team and you obviously do not want to do anything that will
affect your chances. But, for me, full level is the only thing that is
important. I can say that because it's the only level that I played, but
someone who has benefited from playing at Under-21 level might well say the
opposite."
Southgate is certain Wheater will bounce back next season, regardless of
Sunday's result when Boro need to win to have any chance of staying in the
top flight. Wheater's form has dipped slightly, especially in the second
half of the season. But Southgate says he will recover. "I don't like talk
of second-season syndrome because I think it's a load of rubbish," said
Southgate. "It's nothing to do with it being his second season. "My view is
that you have to prove yourself as a professional year after year. Perhaps
what happens is people allow you mistakes in the first season and don't
judge you too harshly. Then they change. David has done well, and every game
he plays will be adding to his overall experience and will make him a better
player."
Boro will be without winger Stewart Downing on Sunday as he has a suspected
broken foot, and will have a scan on Friday to determine the extent of the
damage. If it is a break, that could mean six months on the sidelines and
would scupper potential transfers to Liverpool or Spurs, both of whom are
willing to pay £12million. Boro's medical expert, Grant Downie, has not
confirmed the break. But if surgery is required it could mean rehab. He
said: "We will not be able to assess the extent until the bruising and
swelling go down."

'United will try and sue Burnley'
Sheffield United Mad
By Bladesmadeditor Tuesday, 19th May 2009

The Sun columnist Ian Wright is hopeful his former club, Burnley, win
promotion to the Premier League on Monday...
The ex Match of the Day pundit and former England striker has outrageously
pointed unecessary comments involving the Blades in his weekly column in
national newspaper, The Sun. United will of course receive compensation from
West Ham United from the 'Tevez Affair'' and Wright has included the 'Saga'
situation at the end of his article. He said: "As for Monday's Championship
play-off final, I really hope my old club Burnley come up. "In 2000, I
played 15 times in the season they got promotion to the Championship. "It's
a great ground (Wembley), the fans are superb and I really hope they beat
Sheffield United. "No doubt, though, if United do lose, they'll try and sue
Burnley — as they play in claret and blue."

Zola:Sears to be Hammers loan star next season
5:53pm Tuesday 19th May 2009

FREDDIE Sears is still part of Gianfranco Zola's long-term plans but the
Hammers boss hinted his striker will have to go on loan to 'prove himself.'
The 19-year-old faces stiff competition for a first-team birth when Dean
Ashton resumes training over the pre-season meaning Sears may be sharpening
his skills away from the Boleyn Ground.
Zola said: "I think the right thing for him to do for him to go on loan to
play. He has worked hard here but has not been playing enough, sometimes ten
minutes, sometimes a full game. "Probably he never got what he wanted. He
has improved as a player but needs to play regularly." Last season James
Tomkins and Jordan Spence both spent time away from Upton Park at
Championship Derby County and League One Leyton Orient respectively.
"Unfortunately here it is difficult for him. Next season he will have the
possibility of going on loan and to prove himself. Then he will come back
here as we believe he is an important player for us in future," Zola added.

James Tomkins Should Not Have Been Sent Off - West Ham Keeper Rob Green
The glovesman feels that the referee could have been a little more lenient
at the weekend at Goodison Park...
19 May 2009 19:46:36
Goal.com

West Ham United were beaten 3-1 by Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday,
ending their hopes of landing seventh spot in this season's Premier League,
and denying them the Europa League place that would have gone with it; but
goalkeeper Robert Green was left with an abiding sense of injustice after
the defeat.

One key moment in the game was when referee Phil Dowd awarded Everton a
penalty, and decided that James Tomkins, whose foul on Toffees midfielder
Tim Cahill had led to the kick being awarded, deserved to be sent off for
preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Green, though, feels that he would have been able to gather the ball easily
after Cahill had pushed it past Tomkins, and for that reason he thinks that
Dowd could have displayed a little more mercy.

"We weren't playing particularly well but we were limiting their chances and
Kova [Radoslav Kovac] had scored one of those goals where it moved all over
the place," the keeper told West Ham's official website.

"He [Cahill] came through and he's [Tomkins] made contact. It's a penalty
but I don't know whether he's got a goalscoring chance because I feel I
would have got there first.

"The referee has got to make a split-second decision and it's disappointing
because it's changed the course of the game. Obviously they got their tails
up and we conceded another goal not even five minutes into the second half
and that put us up against it. It's disappointing because it was avoidable."

With Europe no longer on the agenda, Green is hoping that the strikers at
Upton Park can use the one remaining fixture, at home to all-but-doomed
Middlesbrough, to find their shooting boots - a lack of goals being a key
factor in the Hammers failing to finish seventh, Green feels.

"We've got to draw on Sunday to get the same amount of points as we got last
season," he added.

"It's a good job that we got our points when we did. We went on that run and
had a spell where we took our chances. Coley [Carlton Cole] was on fire
scoring goals but, other than that, we've really struggled to put teams
away. I can't remember the last time we scored three goals in a game -
Barnsley in the FA Cup in January or Portsmouth on Boxing Day in the league.

"We've nicked a lot of games 1-0 and nicked enough games like Wigan, Stoke
and others where we've just clung on and defended for our lives and done a
magnificent job of defending. When we've managed to nick a goal, we've hung
in there more often than not and that's why we are where we are."

Danny Gabbidon is set to end his Wales and West Ham injury nightmare by
returning to first-team training this week. The West Ham defender has not
played since December 2007 after failing to recover from a troublesome
stomach injury. The 29-year-old had feared for his career with Wales boss
John Toshack questioning whether the centre-back would ever make another
international appearance. But after stepping up his rehabilitation with the
club's fitness coaches, Gabbidon is ready to return, much to the delight of
Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola. "This is very, very good news that he will be
training with us this week," said Zola. "He is looking forward to next

Olympiakos target West Ham skipper Neill

West Ham captain Lucas Neill is being pursued by Greek Super League club
Olympiakos. Neill's contract at Upton Park expires at the end of the current
season and the fact the club is not flush with funds will require him to
take a pay cut. If the Socceroos defender is unable to do that, it will be
likely that he moves on and Olympiakos may swoop. Reports suggested that
Everton were interested in bringing in Neill to join fellow Aussie Tim
Cahill but his price was too expensive for the Toffees.

Case for defence
WHUFC.com
Robert Green has narrowed his choice down to three for Hammer of the Year
2008/09
18.05.2009

Hammer of the Year Robert Green has made a case for the defence as
supporters cast their vote for this season's winner.

The goalkeeper, who scooped the award 12 months ago, is a strong candidate
to be crowned Hammer of the Year, sponsored by Vantis, again following
Sunday's Barclays Premier League fixture against Middlesbrough at the Boleyn
Ground.

There has been a huge response thus far, with over 8,000 votes cast and just
150 votes separating the top three players.

Green himself, however, believes defenders Matthew Upson and Herita Ilunga
are the hot favourites to battle it out for the title, with midfielder Scott
Parker also in the running.

West Ham have conceded just 40 goals in the 34 Barclays Premier League
matches they have played since Ilunga arrived from French club Toulouse last
August. The DR Congo left-back has played all 34, while Upson has missed
just one league match, sitting out the trip to Blackburn Rovers in late
March through injury.

Green believes the pair's consistency makes them leading candidates to
follow in his footsteps.

"There are obvious candidates but personally, being the goalkeeper, I feel
that barring the last two games we've had a good season at the back," said
Green, who became the fifth goalkeeper to be named Hammer of the Year.

"I'd be looking at someone like Matthew Upson who has played all but one of
the [Barclays Premier League] games and been tremendous and Herita as well.

"It's a difficult one because Matthew is obviously experienced within the
Premier League but Rita has come in and stepped straight into the team and
played every Premier League game since his arrival. For someone to do that
is fantastic because it is such a hard league to come into. If either of
those two wins it then I think that would be right because they've both had
tremendous seasons.

"The other player who is in the running is Scotty, but the fact that he's
missed a quarter of the season goes against him. He has been tremendous this
season too, breaking teams down, so either him or either of the two guys at
the back would be worthy winners."

Voting for Hammer of the Year closes at 10am on Thursday 21 May and there is
strictly one vote per fan. Any additional votes will be discredited before
the results are finalised.

Manager on Monday
WHUFC.com
Europe may no longer be an option for next season but Gianfranco Zola is
still in a positive frame of mind
18.05.2009

A big week is expected at Chadwell Heath as West Ham United regroup for the
final match of the season and the chance to finish on a high.

A fine first season for Gianfranco Zola and his staff will culminate with
the visit of relegation-threatened Middlesbrough on Sunday afternoon. Having
seen his men lose out 3-1 at Everton on Saturday, a victory would confirm a
likely ninth-placed finish on 51 points, both of which would be an
improvement on the previous campaign.

Already though, Zola is aiming higher. He is eager to make the most of his
forthcoming first pre-season at the club to ensure his men are able to
better last the pace next time around. Europe is "certainly" the target in
2009/10 and there will be no dwelling on what might have been - even if the
sending off of James Tomkins at the weekend with his team one-nil up was
harsh.

"We are a very young team, the players will have more experience and might
be able to improve the team for next season and so I am really pleased," the
manager said as he contemplated Saturday's 3-1 loss at Everton. "I am
absolutely positive that we will be much better next season."

The manager is expecting to take his time to consider his summer options,
hoping to have everyone including Danny Gabbidon and Dean Ashton available
when the squad regroups in July. Only Valon Behrami will definitely miss out
on the first day back and Zola has plenty to ponder in terms of his squad
for next season.

He said: "I have a rough idea but it is too early to say and things might go
in one way or another. Even without anybody, I am sure that the team will be
better and don't forget that we will have Ashton back and that will be a big
thing for us. Plus all the players will be better next season."

There may be difficult decisions ahead but he will not be afraid to make
them. "Obviously the club pays me for those moments and I have to take the
decision and I will do that with the interest of the club to take the club
forward. When the moment comes I will make it.

"It is no problem to make the decision. I am motivated by the fact that I
want to make the team and club better and I will take the decisions bearing
that in mind. I will be all right, I know it is part of the job."

With the manager, knowing "if we need to buy a player we can" he reiterated
that he will look to continue with his philosophy of a smaller squad of
21/22 players backed up by a youthful reserve outfit. There will also not be
the need to factor in extra Europa League games, much as that was a problem
he had hoped to face.

"We have to make certain considerations now. The aim is still to improve the
team. We don't need a bigger squad than we thought." More pressing though is
this coming weekend and the need to finish the job started when Zola arrived
last September - especially given the strong backing he and his players have
received.

"It would be a pity not to end the season with a victory on Sunday and I
have told the players. We want to make sure it happens."

Mixed day for Cole
WHUFC.com
Carlton Cole was happy to be back in action after injury, but disappointed
to taste defeat at Everton
18.05.2009

Carlton Cole admitted to having mixed emotions after making his return after
seven weeks out with a groin injury in Saturday's Barclays Premier League
defeat by Everton.

The West Ham United striker, who was hurt in England's 4-0 international
friendly win over Slovakia at Wembley on 28 March, returned as a half-time
substitute at Goodison Park.

Cole, the Hammers' top scorer with eleven goals in 2008/09, had one
gilt-edged opportunity to add to his tally with the score poised at 2-1 in
the Toffees' favour, but a momentary pause allowed Everton goalkeeper Tim
Howard to snatch the ball off his toe.

"Obviously the manager decided not to start me but it was a good call
because, when I came on, it was a bit hard for me to get straight into the
game and be as influential as I wanted to be," said the 25-year-old.

"I had one good opportunity to score, but I wasn't as sharp as I wanted to
be. If I'd been a bit more aggressive with it and taken it on first-time and
tried to dink it over the goalkeeper, maybe I would have scored and it would
have turned the game a bit, but it wasn't to be."

Despite the twin disappointments of missing his chance and losing the match,
and with it the chance of reaching next season's UEFA Europa League, Cole
was still feeling positive after returning from injury a month ahead of
schedule.

"I'm feeling good. The medical staff here, [physiotherapist] George Cooper
and the Doc [medical officer] Nikos [Tzouroudis], have done a really good
job to get me back to where I am. I am four weeks ahead of schedule and I am
very grateful to the medical staff. They've got me here and I wasn't even
looking to be playing this season, so I am grateful."

Cole admitted that he and his team-mates were feeling down after seeing
their dreams of European football evaporate on Merseyside, but said manager
Gianfranco Zola had told the squad they should be proud of their efforts.

With key players such as Valon Behrami, Scott Parker, Dean Ashton and Cole
himself missing large chunks of the season, the striker revealed that Zola
had heaped praise on those called upon in their absences.

"The boys are really disheartened. We've worked so hard this season. A lot
of the boys have really stepped up to the plate when they've been asked to
play because a few of the players who have been playing regularly have got
injured. The players who have come in have done a brilliant job. I am so
proud of them. The manager said that in the changing room after the game."

David James surgery leaves England in keeper crisis
England No1 faces shoulder surgery tomorrow
Robert Green set for call-up to World Cup qualifiers
Dominic Fifield guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 19 May 2009 00.41

The England goalkeeper David James has been ruled out of next month's World
Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra after Portsmouth announced
that the veteran will undergo surgery on a shoulder injury tomorrow. With
Manchester United's Ben Foster also unavailable because of injury, Fabio
Capello will most likely turn to the third choice, West Ham's Robert Green,
for the summer internationals.

James followed Foster in succumbing to injury last night, the Manchester
United youngster needing an operation to repair a ruptured ligament in his
thumb. Yet it is James' absence that is most troubling for Capello with the
potentially awkward trip to Almaty in mind, given that the 38-year-old has
established himself as the national side's No1 under the Italian.

Portsmouth confirmed James, capped 48 times by his country, would be
admitted to a London hospital for the surgery after their 3-1 win over
Sunderland last night, a game the goalkeeper missed with a stiff neck.
"David complained of an acutely stiff neck on Sunday," said the club's
stand-in manager, Paul Hart. "He woke up with it. We spent the weekend and
on Monday trying to treat it but it was still pretty sore at 5pm ahead of
this game so we decided not to risk it.

"But he's had a long-standing injury in his left shoulder anyway that needs
to be corrected and he goes into hospital on Wednesday to get that sorted
outIf he goes in now, we hope he'll be fit for the start of the season but
he'll definitely be out for the summer. David's a very strong-minded person
and knows what he's doing. He's made a decision so that he can be fit for
next season. A consequence of that, of course, is that he'll miss the
England games but he weighed it up before making his decision. It has to be
done and there has to be a sacrifice for that."

James said: "It's something I've been playing with for 18 months but I have
to look at the bigger picture now. I want to be fit for the start of the
season with Ports-mouth and I trust England to do well without me."

That leaves Green as James' likely replacement. He has yet to feature in a
competitive fixture but has enjoyed a fine season and won his second cap in
February's friendly defeat by Spain. The injury-plagued Foster, who played
against Slovakia in March, has been ruled out for up to nine weeks.

"It is a big blow for Ben as not only will he miss the Champions League
final but also England's summer internationals," said Sir Alex Ferguson.
"Ben has tried to continue the season with this injury, but it got so
critical that an operation was the only way forward. It is disappointing for
him but the important thing was to get this operation done."

Chris Kirkland, another potential -England goalkeeper, has yet to be
selected by Capello and is currently injured at Wigan Athletic having been
substituted early in the defeat to Manchester United last week. Scott Carson
has been overlooked since the win in Germany last November, Joe Hart has
lost his first-team place to Shay Given at Manchester City while Blackburn
Rovers' Paul Robinson, McClaren's first choice, has not played for his
country since the 2-1 defeat by Russia in November 2007.

Feeling sleepy, Faubert? Dozy Hammer relaxes on his Madrid holiday
By Sportsmail Reporter

Daily Mail

Julien Faubert's loan spell at Real Madrid has been so predictably
underwhelming that even he appeared to be struggling to stay awake as his
side surrendered the league title at the weekend. The French winger, on loan
from West Ham, was caught by TV cameras seemingly on the verge of nodding
off while on the pitch unfurled a five-goal thriller at Villarreal. The home
side won 3-2 with an injury-time winner from Joan Capdevila and the
virtually horizontal Faubert was luckily not called on to contribute from
the bench. The result confirmed Barcelona as La Liga champions.
Inaction has been a recurring theme for the 25-year-old. He has been used
just twice as a substitute - for a total of 54 minutes - since his shock
move to the Bernabeu in January. Faubert seemed to have expended all his
energy at the weekend laughing and joking with team-mate Royston Drenthe
before taking up a relaxed pose on with his feet up on the comfy-looking
seats at Villarreal's El Madrigal stadium. Reports in Spain criticise him
for appearing to, ahem, rearrange his shorts on several occasions. Then,
once Drenthe was brought on with 17 minutes to play, the former Bordeaux
player had the quiet moments to himself (about 1min 19sec into this
video)...

Widdowson Makes Permanent Switch
Posted on: Tue 19 May 2009
Grimbsy-townfc.com

The 20-year-old left sided defender spent a three month on loan with Town
last season and recently returned to his parent club West Ham to see if he
had a future at Upton Park. "It's very pleasing to sign here permanently,"
he said. "I really enjoyed my time here on loan from January until the end
of the season, so it's good to be here for the next few years. "I've been
back at West Ham for the past couple of weeks and they aren't going to offer
me a contract there. "Having been to Grimsby I know the place I know the
club and it wasn't a difficult decision. "There was a couple of other clubs
that were interested in me but they couldn't really guarantee me regular
football like I was getting at Grimsby."
Meanwhile, Andy Taylor, who had been told that he wasn't part of Mike
Newell's plans for next season, has now left the club by mutual consent. We
would like to wish Andy all the best for the future.

Zola confident West Ham can improve further next season
19.05.09 | Andrew Slevison

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola is confident his team can improve on this
year's top-half finish next season. The Italian tactician has led the
Hammers to a season better than most predicted and despite being in trouble
financially, Zola is adamant the club will continue to get stronger. "We are

West Ham No1 Green highlights Upson, Ilunga impact
19.05.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United goalkeeper Robert Green says defenders Matthew Upson and
Herita Ilunga should be considered for this season's Hammer of the Year
award.
Green won the trophy last season and told whufc.com: "There are obvious
candidates but personally, being the goalkeeper, I feel that barring the
last two games we've had a good season at the back.
"The other player who is in the running is Scotty (Parker), but the fact
that he's missed a quarter of the season goes against him. He has been
tremendous this season too, breaking teams down, so either him or either of
the two guys at the back would be worthy winners."
