Stech stepping up - WHUFC
Marek Stech is looking to build on his his involvement with the first team this season
16.10.2008

Marek Stech has made some giant strides forward this season and is looking forward to another awayday trip with the senior squad.

The 18-year-old is set to travel with the first team again to Hull City this weekend, having been involved in the matchday set-up against Bolton Wanderers before just missing out on the 18 - although Robert Green will retain the No1 jersey on Sunday after resuming full training following his withdrawal from the England squad with a sore knee.

Stech has started for the reserves in their previous two matches against West Bromwich Albion and Fulham and is focused only on applying pressure on Green and Jan Lastuvka in the West Ham United pecking order. "It's great training with the first team as you get good experience," said Stech, who signed a new five-year deal in the summer to underline how highly regarded he is at the Boleyn Ground. "You see the atmosphere on the pitch. It's great to train with the first team and to be with the players before and after the game. It's a nice experience even just to warm up before the game."

The Czech youth international had the experience of playing with several full internationals in the West Brom game, before lining up with some of his peers in a more youthful side for the Fulham match. "For the Fulham match we had a young squad and it is good for us. We want to play for the reserves to get more experience. If we can do well, the manager will give us a chance to play in reserve games, push ourselves on and see what happens."

The 6'4 goalkeeper, who more than impressed in playing three times for the first team during pre-season, is being mentored at the club by his compatriot Ludek Miklosko and is learning a lot from the goalkeeping coach. "Ludo's unbelievable. Every day we work hard and on the training pitch and he is a fantastic coach."

Miklosko watched Stech play in the defeat by Fulham and the former United No1 was pleased by what he saw, despite the wet weather not making it an ideal night. "The conditions and lighting made it very difficult for the players and goalkeepers as well. I cannot blame him for any of the goals as it was just one of those games," Miklosko said.

"There are definitely some positives to take and it was a good experience for him. We had a very young team up against a much more experienced side. The boys need to learn and this was a game from which they really could learn."

McLeish defers Quashie decision - BBC

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish will wait a little longer before deciding whether to sign Nigel Quashie on loan. A decision had been expected on a possible loan move to St Andrew's for the West Ham United midfielder, who has been training with Blues. McLeish told BBC WM: "Nigel's had a difficult couple of weeks. "We want to wait until we can see him in a much sharper vein over the next couple of weeks. We'll make decisions later on, maybe not right now."
Quashie joined West Ham in January 2007 following the fourth of his relegations from the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion (he also went down with QPR, Nottingham Forest and Southampton). He has made just seven starts in almost two years at Upton Park, largely down to a nagging foot injury which kept him out all of last season. McLeish gave him the last of his 14 caps for Scotland in June 2007 against the Faeroe Islands. The Blues boss has also deferred a decision on whether to sign another recent trialist, the Togolese midfielder Souleymane Mamam.

Bellamy bemoans brave Welsh loss - BBC

Craig Bellamy bemoaned Welsh football history continually repeating itself after brave Wales were beaten 1-0 by Germany in their World Cup qualifier. Piotr Trochowski broke Welsh hearts with a 72nd-minute screamer as the Euro 2008 finalists edged past Wales. "It seems to be the same old story, we're doing well but that final little bit, we just seem to be falling short," Wales captain Bellamy told the BBC. "We play as a team but it's a shame - it took something special to beat us."
John Toshack's plucky Wales side produced a heroic performance in Russia last month only to lose 2-1 in Moscow. Wales were again close to holding the mighty Germans in Monchengladbach until Hamburg star Trochowski struck late on. Bellamy said: "It was a great strike but he had threatened to do that all game. "We fought the Czech Republic all the way in the last qualification group, we played well in Russia and now in Germany but we keep falling short. "If you look at the table we've probably played the two toughest games, Russia and Germany away from home, and we can take heart from that but we have lost twice and that is disappointing. "I just don't know how to start turning glorious failure into glorious success, if we knew that it wouldn't have taken us 50 years to qualify for a major tournament. "There have been better Welsh teams than this one who haven't done it. "But we are a decent side as I've been in Wales teams who've struggled to get anything together away from home whereas we are turning up and having a good go. "No-one wants to feel the hurt and we're not too far away, I just hope the experience the younger players are gaining from these tough results might do us good in the long term. "We need a bit of experience but credit to Germany they kept going here, they kept knocking at the door and we rode our luck a bit but in the end it ran out."
Bellamy singled out defender James Collins for praise after his heroic performance in his first competitive start since December. The West Ham striker acknowledged: "James was outstanding, his blocks were excellent and he deserved more."
Collins, himself, added: "I knew I was fit and I was pleased with my personal performance. "But it is not about me, I'm disappointed we didn't get a result here because we deserved it. "It was tough, we knew it would be but we defended well and it has taken a wonder goal to beat us."
Wales manager John Toshack praised his team following their second defeat of this 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. "Of course we are very disappointed, to have come so close against two of the top four countries in Europe," said Toshack. "But I could not have asked for any more from the lads. They gave everything, but just came up short again. "I had players out there like James Collins and Craig Bellamy who neither had played for a year. "I worried about even putting Collins into the match under such circumstances. But they were magnificent. "Germany had a lot of the ball and some good chances, but we made two or three good openings too and could easily have got something. "But it means in terms of qualification, we now know we must win our next two home games or we are wasting our time. "We play Finland and Germany in Cardiff in a five-day period at the end of next March. Those two games must be won. "In fact, we really cannot afford to lose any more of our qualifiers now. We have played our hardest two matches, both away, so we must look to get something from every other game we play."
Germany retained top spot in the group with the win, their second in five days, while Russia took over second place with a victory over Finland. Toshack said: "We have always known this was going to be a very hard group to qualify from. But we have given it our best shot. "We needed to win our two home games against Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein and we were looking to maybe nick a point away to Russia or Germany. "I actually felt we played a lot better in Moscow, certainly in that second-half when we were really going for it. "But the Germans are a fine side, they kept possession and controlled the ball. "They had us pushed back in the second period and it was hard for the lads. "But Craig had a couple of great runs and almost set-up goals for us. In the end it was very close, but still so disappointing to get nothing."

Hammers reject Behrami link - SSN
Swiss star staying put; no bid for Argentine
Last updated: 16th October 2008

West Ham's technical director Gianluca Nani has denied that the club are gearing up to sell Valon Behrami in January. The Swiss international only arrived at Upton Park in the summer from Lazio, but now their city rivals Roma are being linked with a move. Behrami's agent has claimed that contact has been made, but Nani has insisted that the club have no intentions to sell - despite off the field concerns of owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. "I am tired of responding to questions on Behrami," Nani stated. "I repeat - Behrami is not for sale and Roma have never asked for the player. "Before you start any kind of transfer, Rome must speak with West Ham, which has not happened. Behrami is our player, we have high hopes for him so I see no reason to sell. "Even if an offer arrived from Rome for €50million (£39million) we would not sell. It is not a matter of numbers but of will on our part to keep the player."
Nani also distanced the club from a bid for Fiorentina star Pablo Daniel Osvaldo. The 22-year-old Argentine has been linked with a move to East London and although Nani admits he is a 'great striker', he insists that no move is planned. "We do not want a team that is too 'Italian'," Nani told Viola News. "Our plan is to build players at home, taken when they are still young. "Osvaldo is a great striker but is already an important player and falls outside the type of player we are looking for - because we are covered in that role."

Roma tracking Behrami - SSN
Hammers ace linked with swift Serie A return
Last updated: 16th October 2008

Valon Behrami's agent claims Serie A giants Roma are interested acquiring the West Ham ace. The Switzerland international only joined the Hammers from Lazio last summer and has made an immediate impact in England's top flight. However, with the possibility of West Ham needing to raise funds to pay Sheffield United compensation over the Carlos Tevez affair, they could be forced to sell. Behrami's agent Alessandro Beltrami claims the Giallorossi have contacted him over the 25-year-old, although it is too early to say whether a deal will be done in the January transfer window. "Roma have enquired after Valon," Beltrami told the Daily Star.
"They have given me their word that they are keen on the lad and willing to close the deal. "However, we are just in the early stages."

Hammers happy with CAS move - SSN
West Ham continue their battle to have FA ruling overturned
Last updated: 16th October 2008

West Ham have welcomed the involvement of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the Carlos Tevez affair. The Hammers are fighting an independent Football Association tribunal ruling which ordered the club to pay compensation to Sheffield United following the Blades' relegation at the end of the 2006/07 season. West Ham want CAS to adjudicate on the decision and reach a definitive conclusion to the case. The court, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, confirmed on Wednesday that they have started an arbitration procedure despite opposition from Sheffield United. That news has come as a relief to the Hammers, although there remains the possibility that the Premier League club will face a multi-million pound pay-out. A spokesman for West Ham said: "West Ham United welcome the statement by CAS that they have initiated an arbitration procedure. "This is the start of the CAS process and we hope that it will be the first step toward a full arbitration hearing in due course. "West Ham are doing no more that Sheffield United have already done in seeking a right of appeal and we believe that CAS is the appropriate body for this." An independent tribunal, convened under Football Association rules last month, deemed West Ham to have won at least three points due to Argentina striker Tevez - whose registration broke Premier League rules on third-party ownership.
The tribunal ruled Sheffield United were due compensation as a result, with the Blades claiming around £50million. FA regulations also state that no appeal to the decision is permitted to a court of law. However, in their legal submission to CAS, West Ham argue that English football's governing body would be in breach of Fifa statutes if they did not allow an appeal to be made to the Swiss-based court.

Lucas Neill says delay helped Aussies crush Qatar
News.com.au
October 17, 2008 12:00am

SOCCEROOS captain Lucas Neill has revealed how Australia took advantage of the storm that threatened to postpone Wednesday's World Cup qualifier with Qatar.
As the heavens opened, both teams were summoned from the pitch in the middle of their warm-up by the match officials, and Neill revealed how the team's senior men used the delay to rouse the players to attack Qatar from the outset once the game eventually began. Two goals in the first 17 minutes crushed Qatar's resistance, and the West Ham captain said the Socceroos had realised how the uncertainty over the game could be turned to their advantage, adding that the wet pitch also aided the home team's plans. "There were rumours that Qatar wanted the game to be called off so that gave us an advantage straight away," Neill said after the 4-0 win.
"In the end I think it played into our hands. We knew that if we had a fast start as in the Melbourne game (3-0 in February), we could get on top and it turned out exactly that way. "We had to warm up twice but mentally we were very strong. It's easy to let your mind drift, wondering if you'll be playing or whether the weather will call it off. "Everyone goes into a lull so it was important for Craig Moore, Mark Schwarzer and me to rally the troops and get everyone's heart rate up. "We knew we only had seven or eight minutes of warm-up to get going again, but if we could be warmer than them it would make all the difference. "The pitch turned out to be brilliant, nice and zippy and easy to pass the ball on. It suited our quick passing and where it did slow up we could hit one or two long."
The 4-0 thrashing, allied to Japan's surprising 1-1 draw with Uzbekistan in Tokyo later the same night, sent Australia to the top of Group 1 and affirmed their status as the dominant team in the group. With Brett Emerton scoring twice and Josh Kennedy on target again, not to mention Tim Cahill's goalscoring return to the side after an eight-month absence, Neill conceded the result had left the Socceroos favourites to qualify. But he said such a tag meant nothing without continued good results. "We have to say that we are (favourites)," Neill said. "We have won two from two and we're leading the group. We've got a lot of home games to come late on, we're strong home and away and we've got a goal difference of five goals. So yes, all this means that we've made a statement today. But it will count for nothing if we do not win the next game in Bahrain or at least get a point."
After three rounds have been completed - Australia had a bye in the second - Pim Verbeek's men sit top of the group with six points from two games. Japan is second with four points, also from two games, with Qatar third on four points from three games and Uzbekistan and Bahrain on a point each. With the Australian dressingroom's mood lifted even higher when news of Uzbekistan's draw in Japan filtered through, Neill said the group dynamics were unfolding in Australia's favour.
"It was a good night for us. It really could not get any better," he said. "Uzbekistan are still in it and they will need to win all their games at home, which is going to be great for us," he added, knowing all the other teams in the group are still to visit Tashkent. "Our three points in Tashkent are looking fantastic now."

Exclusive: Behrami has options - Setanta
by Laurent Picard, 16 October 2008

Valon Behrami's agent has exclusively told setantasports.com that the West Ham player is content at Upton Park and does not plan to return to Italy despite there being interest in his services and the economic turmoil surrounding the club. West Ham's chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson was sacked by Landsbanki, the second biggest bank in Iceland, at the start of October and his future at the club is the subject of speculation. As a consequence, Italian press sources have hinted former Lazio star Behrami is tempted by a return to Italy, where Roma, Palermo and Juventus are keen on his services. His representative Alessandro Beltrami has confirmed the Serie A sides' interest, but declared his client is fine in London and revealed he is due to meet with sporting director Gianluca Nani before the end of the month to discuss his player's future. "The rumour saying the player is unsettled at West Ham is wrong; it comes from Italy, where several clubs have always been interested in him – Roma, Palermo and Juventus," Beltrami told setantasports.com. "People say West Ham have money problems and want to re-sell Behrami quickly in order to earn money, but I don't believe this. "I am due to meet with Nani before the game with Arsenal, but he told me there's no issue with the player at all. "As far as the player is concerned, he loves London life and likes being a West Ham player."

Hammer wanted Liga move - Setanta
by Laurent Picard, 16 October 2008

Diego Tristan has revealed to the Spanish press that he only joined West Ham because he could not find a team in La Liga. The 32-year-old admits his age and his poor spell with Mallorca in the 2006/2007 season did not help him attract the interest of Spanish sides this summer despite being a free agent. Tristan added that he undertook a number of trials, something that was tough to accept, and rejected some propositions in to favour a top challenge. The striker also revealed Gianfranco Zola wants to add more technique to his attack, as he does not believe Carlton Cole can play this role. "My priority was staying in La Liga," Tristan told Marca. "I rejected important offers because I was waiting to find a team in the first or second (Spanish) division in order to remain close to home. "I don't understand why the doors are closed to me because I'm in my thirties. My return to Mallorca (in 2006) didn't prove positive but people only remember a poor year rather than eight good ones. "Being unemployed was a pain because I worked hard in Italy and the fact I played as second striker was an issue. "I decided I would only go abroad to play in a competitive league because football is not finished for me, and I agreed to experience a trial period. "I also offered to do it in Spain as well, which can damage your confidence. "I'm very happy to play in The Premier League as it's a dream come true. The stadiums and the supporters are amazing. "Zola was a top footballer and will achieve a great career as a coach. "As far as I'm concerned I must settle in London and learn the language, but within two or three weeks I will be able to fight for the position like everyone. "Carlton Cole plays well with his back to goal and they wanted a more technical footballer. For that reason Zola, who already knows me, decided to hire me. "Hopefully we will qualify for a European Cup."

West Ham set to clinch lucrative shirt sponsorship deal
16.10.08 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United are set for a massive financial boost by landing a new shirt sponsorship deal before the weekend. The Mirror says West Ham are close to announcing some good financial news - for a change - with the signing of a £3.5million sponsorship deal. The imminent announcement of a new shirt sponsor will be very welcome news after travel company XL went into administration last month, leaving a £5m gap in their finances. A £7.5m deal, worth £2.5m a year, was signed in February 2007 but only one year of the contract had been paid into the East Londoners' coffers. Since then the Hammers have played with patches sewn over the XL logos on the first-team shirts. A club source said: "We hope to have the new sponsor on our shirts on Sunday for the match at Hull City."

FA ready to shut down West Ham's appeal By Steve Turner - fansonline.net
Posted on Thursday 16 Oct 2008 11:35:00

Despite being granted the right to appeal to CAS over the Sheffield United affair, the FA could be set to shut it down. The decision was expected at the end of the month over the billions and billions of pound fine that was going to get every other team in the world a slice of compensation from the Hammers, and inevitably lead to a credit crunch meltdown. We're paraphrasing, but it seems some people believe playing Tevez is responsible for the credit crunch. However, the FA does not believe CAS has the authority to judge in such matters, especially as Sheffield United have pointed out West Ham agreed to be bound by the findings of the ruling.

Brown: Tigers hoping to mete out further capital punishment - CityIndependent
By CI Reporter - 16/10/2008 11:07

Manager Phil Brown has been speaking ahead of the critical West Ham United home clash this Sunday, with the Tigers hoping to extend their winning streak against London opposition...

Hull City boss Phil Brown is keen to see his side continue their fine form against capital opposition in the Premier League this Sunday, when the Tigers host West Ham United at the Circle. So far, Brown's troops have recorded a 100% record against London clubs this season with victory at home to Fulham on the opening day - and then incredibly - recording back-to-back wins at Arsenal and Tottenham in their last two fixtures. And the manager was hopeful the run would continue stating - "It would be nice to remain undefeated against London clubs, especially with Chelsea on the horizon as well. But we're concentrating on West Ham for now and we'll judge the game on its merits."

Adding - "There's been a lot of speculation surrounding them lately about boardroom unrest and things. They also have a new manager who is being tested at the highest level. But like I say, we'll judge this game on its merits and hopefully we'll come out of it with something in the bag."

Hammer blow to West Ham's appeal over Tevez affair - Daily Mail
By Raoul Simons
Last updated at 9:59 AM on 16th October 2008

A villian in the eyes of Arsenal and England fans, Ashley Cole is now in danger of irritating West Ham. The Hammers are trying to convince the Court of Arbitration for Sport to hear their appeal over the latest Carlos Tevez decision, even though their case doesn't fulfil the criteria for Lausanne intervention. Those involve either both parties agreeing to CAS arbitration or a clause in the Football Association's rules allowing such appeals. Since Sheffield United won't endorse the CAS move and the FA have no such clause, the club are left arguing that the court should be used because it is FIFA's ultimate forum for resolving disputes. It is a view similar to the one expressed by Cole in 2005, when his legal team asked CAS to hear an appeal against the Premier League's £75,000 fine over the Chelsea 'tapping up' incident. On that occasion, CAS refused and a well-placed insider has suggested the Cole precedent could work against West Ham.

West Ham lodge appeal to CAS over Tevez affair - metro.co.uk
Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Carlos Tevez The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) have opened proceedings to determine if they can hear West Ham's appeal against a ruling which could see them pay out millions over the Carlos Tevez affair. CAS confirmed that a "statement of appeal" had been filed by the Hammers, asking the Lausanne court to adjudicate on an independent tribunal's assertion that they should pay compensation to Sheffield United for their relegation from the Premier League in 2006/07.
A statement from CAS read: "The CAS has initiated an arbitration procedure and will first examine its jurisdiction as a preliminary issue after both clubs have had the opportunity to file written submissions on this point." "For the moment, no decision has been made with respect to the holding of a hearing. In any event, a decision on jurisdiction is not to be expected before the end of November 2008."

Cole eyes a goals boost - E24
16 October 2008
By JONATHAN CLEGG

CARLTON COLE might be the most improved player at Upton Park over the past year - but the West Ham striker believes he is capable of making further progress under Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola. Cole has undergone a dramatic transformation in the last 12 months, earning the respect of the club's supporters, who used to jeer his arrival from the substitutes bench. With four goals in eight appearances already this season, the in-form forward has emerged as a key player for the Hammers and has shown signs of finally developing a more clinical touch in front of goal, prompting Zola to talk up his England credentials last month. But the 24-year-old, who has scored in each of the past two games, insists he can further increase his scoring record and become a deadlier finisher - after revealing that he has been hobbled by ankle injuries during his impressive recent run. Cole suffered a knock to his left ankle in last month's home victory against Newcastle but played through the pain to score a crucial goal in the 2-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
And despite suffering a freak injury to his right ankle the following week, Cole again took his place in the starting line-up against Bolton, scoring West Ham's sole goal in a 3-1 defeat at Upton Park. The striker has since been working with the club's medical staff to shake off the nagging injuries - and he is confident he will be a better player when he regains peak fitness. He said: "I've been playing with an injury during the last two games. I already had an ankle injury and [on the day before playing Bolton] I turned over on my other ankle so I've had a bit of bad luck. "I first did it against Newcastle at Upton Park and I was lucky to be playing against Fulham the following week but I got a goal. "I shouldn't have been playing [against Bolton] really but the medical staff have been quality and they got me on track and I was happy to play. "Hopefully I can get my ankle right and I'll get more goals in our next games."
Cole knows that he could be in line for more hard knocks when West Ham travel to Hull on Sunday, with the former Chelsea striker expecting a physical encounter at the KC Stadium. But he believes the Hammers can bounce back from defeat against Bolton and predicts that the squad's superior skill will shine through. He said: "Obviously they're a physical side but we just need to counteract that with the qualities that we've got. "We know they're in good form at the moment, they did well against Spurs so we know they're a good outfit and they're going to be solid. "We just need to break them down and I think we can go up there and get a result because we've got good talent.

Green in an injury scare - E24
16 October 2008

ROBERT GREEN has given West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola a major injury scare after the Hammers No1 was forced to pull out of the England squad with a knee injury. Green withdrew from Fabio Capello's squad ahead of last night's World Cup qualifying match in Belarus after complaining of soreness in his knee. The 28-year-old did not travel to Minsk with the rest of the squad and was replaced in the travelling party by Under-21 keeper Joe Hart. Green has returned to Upton Park for treatment on the injury and his fitness for West Ham's Premier League match at Hull on Sunday is uncertain. The former Norwich goalkeeper, who was voted West Ham's player of the year last season, could be replaced by Jan Lastuvka if he fails to recover for the trip to the KC Stadium. Lastuvka has made one appearance since joining West Ham on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk in August. The Czech Republic international made his debut under Zola in the Carling Cup match at Watford and committed a costly error as the Hammers crashed out in the third round. Czech youth international Marek Stech will be promoted to the first-team squad as second-choice keeper if Green is unable to participate.

Hammers deny Osvaldo link - Setanta
by Tom Adams, 16 October 2008

West Ham's technical director Gianluca Nani has ruled out a January move for Fiorentina forward Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, claiming the Argentinian does not fit the profile of player that The Hammers are searching for. Osvaldo recently voiced his frustration with life as a substitute in Italy and West Ham, with their obvious links to Serie A through Nani and manager Gianfranco Zola, were linked with a move for the 22-year-old who has made only one league start this season. But West Ham completed the free transfer signing of Diego Tristan on Tuesday and Nani has made clear they will not pursue Osvaldo come January as they are looking to avoid a situation where imports take precedence over young talents. In a nod to recent reports claiming a financial crisis is brewing at Upton Park, Nani also laughed off suggestions that the troubles of owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson would restrict the club's transfer plans. "But if in Italy they say we are bankrupt how can we buy? Joking aside, our situation is calm but we do not want a team that is too 'Italian'," Nani told violanews.com. "And moreover our plan is to build players at home, taken when they are still young. "Osvaldo is a great striker but is already an important player and falls outside the type of player we are looking for because we are covered in that role. [Fiorentina team-mate Riccardo] Montolivo? The same."
Meanwhile, Nani has been forced to deny suggestions that Roma could be poised to sign Switzerland international Valon Behrami in January. The defender's agent has recently been quoted as claiming that the Giallorossi have enquired about the summer signing from Lazio but Nani has forcefully denied that Behrami will be leaving Upton Park. "I am tired of responding to questions on Behrami," Nani added. "I repeat - Behrami is not for sale and Roma have never asked for the player. "Before you start any kind of transfer, Rome must speak with West Ham, which has not happened. Behrami is our player, we have high hopes for him so I see no reason to sell. "Even if an offer arrived from Rome for €50 million (£39 million) we would not sell. It is not a matter of numbers but of will on our part to keep the player."

FA believe arbitration court have no authority - The Sheffield Star
Published Date: 16 October 2008
By James Shield

THE COURT of Arbitration for Sport, who yesterday announced their will consider the legitimacy of West Ham's efforts to appeal against Sheffield United's victory in the Carlos Tevez Affair, could incur the FA's wrath if they decide to hear the Premier League club's case. Officials in Lausanne, where CAS is based, expect to announce their decision towards the end of the next month after receiving submissions from both Upton Park and Bramall Lane. United won a landmark legal ruling last month when an independent tribunal headed by Lord Griffiths ordered West Ham to pay them damages for illegally fielding the Argentine striker during season 2006/07. Like United, the FA, whose laws provided the framework for the latest hearing, do not believe CAS have any authority to intervene. Despite refusing to comment publicly on the matter - other than to stress they had no influence over Griffiths and his team - Soho Square could take the view that CAS is eroding its authority if it gives West Ham the green light. United have also declined the invitation to elaborate on the details of the documentation they forwarded to Switzerland on Friday. But it is believed to focus on two areas. The first is that that both they and West Ham agreed to be bound by the findings of Griffith and his colleagues beforehand. The second centres on FIFA's statute book which, outlining CAS' role, appears to suggest that their verdict is impossible to overturn. Meanwhile, United will not be signing former Spain international Gerard Lopez. The ex-Barcelona midfielder, who completed a trial at United last week, is now expected to pursue a career on North America's MLS.

West Ham set to have new shirt sponsors in time for Hull City match - The Mirror
By Neil McLeman 16/10/2008

West Ham are close to announcing some good financial news - for a change - with the signing of a £3.5million sponsorship deal. The Upton Park club has suffered a torrid time in recent weeks with the collapse of previous sponsor XL, Icelandic chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson losing a fortune in the credit crunch and Sheffield United also winning the right to claim compensation over the Tevez Affair. The bill for Tevez alone could total £30m although the Hammers have lodged an appeal.
West Ham have already been fined £5.5m by the FA for the invalid registration of the Argentinian striker during the 2006-07 season, while they paid off Freddie Ljungberg's £6 contract in the summer. New boss Gianfranco Zola has been told to sell before he can buy in the January transfer window. West Ham insist that Gudmundsson remains "fully committed" to the long-term success of the club he bought for £85m in 2006. But the imminent announcement of a new shirt sponsor will be very welcome news after travel company XL went into administration last month, leaving a £5m gap in their finances. A £7.5m deal, worth £2.5m a year, was signed in February 2007 but only one year of the contract had been paid into the East Londoners' coffers. Since then the Hammers have played with patches sewn over the XL logos on the first-team shirts. A club source said: "We hope to have the new sponsor on our shirts on Sunday for the match at Hull City." The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland yesterday confirmed West Ham had lodged an appeal against the FA's £5.5m fine over Tevez. Cas will now accept written evidence from Sheffield United and West Ham before deciding before the end of next month whether they will hear the case.

Upson plays as England shine - WHUFC
England made it four wins from four with Matthew Upson's help away to Belarus on Wednesday
15.10.2008

Matthew Upson played the full 90 minutes as England made their best start to World Cup qualifying in more than 30 years with a 3-1 win in Belarus.

Fabio Capello's men have won all four of their opening games to hold a commanding lead at the top of Group 6. Steven Gerrard's eleventh-minute shot from range was cancelled out just before the half-hour mark by Pavel Sitko but Wayne Rooney took over after the interval. He struck first from Emile Heskey's left-wing cross before wrapping up the win with a deft finish from Gerrard's pass with 15 minutes to play.

Upson was winning his eleventh cap and had a relatively comfortable night alongside stand-in skipper Rio Ferdinand, in the absence of usual captain John Terry. He could even have added a fourth, going close with a free header in the closing stages. The No6 was the only West Ham United player in the party that travelled to Minsk after Robert Green's withdrawal with a sore knee. The goalkeeper should be fit to play away to Hull City on Sunday.

In the European qualifying zone, the winners of each group will progress to the 2010 World Cup. The eight best runners-up will then be drawn into four play-off matches with the winners of each two-legged tie joining the pool winners in South Africa.

World Cup dream on for Behrami - WHUFC
Switzerland have taken six points from six to keep alive Valon Behrami's hopes of reaching South Africa
15.10.2008

Valon Behrami's dreams of a second trip to the World Cup finals are still alive after helping Switzerland to a superb 2-1 win in Greece.

The Euro 2008 co-hosts had suffered a major setback last month with a 2-1 home defeat by minnows Luxembourg. However, they won by the same scoreline against Latvia in St Gallen on Saturday and then followed that up tonight in style against the 2004 European champions, who had won their first three games. Behrami again played the full 90 minutes in a midfield role.

After Behrami was upended on a driving run into the area, Alexander Frei put the visitors in front from the penalty spot just before half-time in Athens but Angelos Charisteas restored parity in the 68th minute. Blaise N'Kufo, the weekend match-winner, restored the visitors' advantage in the 77th minute after rounding the keeper on a breakaway.

Switzerland are third in Group 2, a point behind Israel and two adrift of Greece with both nations still to travel to the central European country. In the European qualifying zone, the winners of each group will progress to the 2010 World Cup. The eight best runners-up will then be drawn into four play-off matches with the winners of each two-legged tie joining the pool winners in South Africa.

Duo just lose out in Germany - WHUFC
James Collins and Craig Bellamy were on the losing side but can hold their heads up high with Wales
15.10.2008

James Collins and Craig Bellamy both played the full 90 minutes as Wales narrowly lost out 1-0 in Germany in a gritty World Cup qualifier.

The West Ham United duo turned in excellent performances but could not prevent the home team in Monchengladbach from stealing the points through Piotr Trochowski's well-taken 72nd-minute goal. Collins was imperious at the back, not least with some timely headers and blocks, on what was his first senior start since last December and a knee ligament injury. Describing his club-mate's man of the match display as "outstanding", Bellamy added: " We can take heart from it but we have still lost twice [away from home in the group]. We are doing well but just seem to be falling short."

It was captain Bellamy, getting a welcome 90 minutes after his 80-minute run-out in Saturday's 2-0 win against Liechtenstein, that held the best hope for the Wales side. He went close early in the second half with the score level before a moment of brilliance in the 80th-minute nearly produced an equaliser. He raced away on the left of the attack, beat his man with ease and then cut inside. The striker then slipped the ball across the penalty area but Chris Gunter could not convert.

Wales are level on six points with second-placed Russia in Group 4 but have played a game more than their rivals. Both teams are four points adrift of Germany and a key encounter could be Russia's return trip to Wales next September, having won 1-0 in Moscow last month. In the European qualifying zone, the winners of each group will progress to the 2010 World Cup. The eight best runners-up will then be drawn into four play-off matches with the winners of each two-legged tie joining the pool winners in South Africa.

Lucas Neill helped Australia to an impressive 4-0 home win over Qatar on Wednesday afternoon
15.10.2008

Lucas Neill will be heading back to England on a high after he led Australia to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Qatar in Brisbane on Wednesday.

The Socceroos captain played the full 90 minutes of the Asian zone World Cup qualifier. As well as ensuring the home team kept a clean sheet, he got forward to support his side's attacks at every opportunity. Midway through the second half, the No2 was unlucky to see his deft ball into the visitors' area headed just over by Josh Kennedy.

The game was delayed by 30 minutes due to a torrential storm, but once it got under way two goals from Brett Emerton and one apiece from Tim Cahill and Kennedy gave Australia a comfortable win. The result leaves the Socceroos top of Group A with six points from six after Japan could only draw 1-1 with Uzbekistan at home.

Noble knows seven rivals - WHUFC
The full lineup has finally been completed for next summer's European Under-21 Championship
15.10.2008

Mark Noble and his England team-mates have learned who they will be up against at the 2009 European Under-21 Championship next summer.

After the 5-4 aggregate success against Wales in Tuesday night's play-off, the Young Lions made sure of a place in the eight-nation finals in Sweden. Along with the hosts, the other six countries involved after success in their respective two-legged ties are Italy - formerly coached by Gianfranco Zola - Spain, Germany, Serbia, Finland and Belarus.

The draw will take place on Wednesday 3 December in Gothenburg. The Netherlands - winners of the last two editions - have not won the right to defend their trophy. The finals will be held between 15 and 29 June, with the chance still for the club's Under-19 internationals James Tomkins, Jordan Spence, Junior Stanislas and Freddie Sears to stake their claim before the season end to make it into Stuart Pearce's 23-man squad.

Further delay in Tevez case - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 15th October 2008
By: Staff Writer

West Ham United and Sheffield United will have to wait until the end of November before discovering whether or not the Court of Arbitration for Sport will hear the case. A brief statement released on the CAS website this afternoon confirmed that the arbitration procedure (or preliminary hearing) had begun, but a decision on whether to hear the case in full had been deferred. "The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirms that a statement of appeal has been filed by West Ham United football club against Sheffield United football club with respect to the interim award of 18 September 2008 that was rendered by an arbitration panel of the English Football Association (FA)," the statement read. West Ham United requests the annulment of the FA arbitration panel's award. The dispute is related to the validity of the registration of the Argentinean football player, Carlos Tevez with West Ham United at the beginning of the football season 2006/2007."The CAS has initiated an arbitration procedure and will first examine its jurisdiction as a preliminary issue after both clubs have had the opportunity to file written submissions on this point.
"For the moment, no decision has been made with respect to the holding of a hearing. In any event, a decision on jurisdiction is not to be expected before the end of November 2008."
The arbitration panel to which the CAS refer found in Sheffield United's favour last month. Blades Chairman Kevin McCabe - to whom this latest news signifies yet another setback in his so-called 'campaign for fairness' - is yet to respond.

Hammers lodge CAS appeal - SSN
West Ham hope to avoid paying compensation
Last updated: 15th October 2008

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed that West Ham have filed an appeal against Sheffield United over the Carlos Tevez affair. The Hammers were ordered to pay compensation to the Blades by a Football Association arbitration panel last month. West Ham immediately outlined their intention to contest the decision and they have now taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). CAS have now opened proceedings to determine if they can hear West Ham's appeal against the ruling which could cost the club millions. A statement read: "The CAS has initiated an arbitration procedure and will first examine its jurisdiction as a preliminary issue after both clubs have had the opportunity to file written submissions on this point. "For the moment, no decision has been made with respect to the holding of a hearing. In any event, a decision on jurisdiction is not to be expected before the end of November 2008." Argentine duo Tevez and Javier Mascherano arrived at Upton Park in the summer of 2006 but it later emerged that businessman Kia Joorabchian had engineered the transfer and that his company part-owned Tevez. The Premier League found West Ham guilty of failing to declare this and breaching the rules on third-party ownership. The Hammers were handed a £5.5m fine by the Premier League but there was no points deduction, and Tevez played an instrumental role in keeping West Ham in the top flight as Sheffield United went down.

Hammers close in on shirt sponsor deal - Newham Recorder
15 October 2008

WEST HAM are set to have their new shirt sponsor in place in time for the live television clash with Arsenal on October 26, WRITES DAVE EVANS.

Negotiations are still going on with two or three companies, but the Hammers are keen to get a new sponsor in place to show the world when they face the Gunners at Upton Park, earning them maximum publicity.

It is another ray of light after the economic gloom and selling rumours that blighted the club last week, and shows that perhaps the Icelandic owners are serious about keeping hold of their east London asset.

The deal should earn West Ham a much-needed £4million a year over the next five years, and will go a long way to recouping the losses they suffered with the collapse of previous sponsors XL Holidays, who were partly owned by Hammers chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson.

That collapse cost West Ham something in the region of £5million and coupled with the problems that have beset the chairman back in Iceland, it left a substantial hole in his finances.

An online gambling site is said to be one of the possible shirt sponsors, though there are parties interested from extremely varied parts of the business world.

With the current problems that have beset the beleaguered Hammers in the last month or so, you would think that perhaps they were not the sort of club a business would want to be associated with.

But in a world where Premier League football is one of the biggest entertainment products around, and where almost all publicity is good publicity, it seems there are a lot of businesses prepared to back the Hammers with their money.

A decision is expected in the next couple of days, but it seems unlikely that the new shirts will be ready for Sunday's trip to Hull.

Nani Dismisses Behrami To Roma Rumours - Goal.com

Technical director of West Ham United, Gianluca Nani has dismissed rumours linking Velon Behrami with a quick return to Serie A with the rivals of his previous club Lazio, Roma...
The Swiss international has made a steady start to life at Upton Park after settling into the sides of both Alan Curbishley and Gianfranco Zola respectively. However, his agent Alessandro Beltrami caused a storm in a teacup by declaring that Serie A giants Lazio were interested in launching a bid for the 23 year-old in January.
He told Laromasiamonoi.it: "Roma have inquired after Valon. They have given me their word that they are keen on the lad and willing to close a deal."His comments were quashed however, by Italian transfer supremo Gianluca Nani. The West Ham executive insisted that the Hammers' latest investment would be staying put.
He told the press this evening: "I am tired of responding to questions on Behrami. I repeat - Behrami is not for sale and Roma have never asked for the player.
"Before you start any kind of transfer, Rome must speak with West Ham, which has not happened. Behrami is our player, we have high hopes for him so I see no reason to sell. WEST Ham United's Matthew Upson helped a Wayne Rooney-inspired England to a 3-1 2010 World Cup qualifying victory in Belarus last night. The Hammers centre-back started as Fabio Capello's side continued their fine start to their campaign with a fine win in Minsk. Manchester United striker Rooney scored twice, while Liverpool's Steven Gerrard hit the other as England completed their best ever start to a World Cup qualifying campaign. England are five points clear at the top of their group. Elsewhere, Craig Bellamy and James Collins produced heroic displays as Wales fell to a narrow 1-0 Group Four defeat in Germany. Collins, making his first competitive start since last December, was in particlarly impressive in Moenchengladbach where Piotr Trochowski scored the only goal with 22 minutes remaining.
In Athens, West Ham's Valon Behrami was a starter as Switzerland earned a superb 2-1 Group Two win over Greece. Alexander Frei and Blaise Nkufo were on target for the Swiss, while Angelos Charisteas replied for the Greeks. Earlier in the day, Irons captain Lucas Neill had skippered Australia to a comprehensive 4-0 Asian qualifying group win over Qatar in Brisbane. Everton's Tim Cahill opened the scoring for the Socceroos before Blackburn Rovers' winger Brett Emerton added a brace.

West Ham academy boss Carr: Kids will get chance under Zola
16.10.08 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United academy boss Tony Carr is confident his brightest players will get a senior chance under manager Gianfranco Zola.

"I think a lot of young players will blossom with Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke with the way they are working them," Carr told whufc.com.

"Speaking to Gianfranco, he's very much youth-orientated and wants the young players to do well and to give them opportunities. It's my responsibility to ensure that they are good enough and hopefully we are taking steps in that direction."

The likes of Marek Stech, Jordan Spence and Junior Stanislas are all on the verge of joining the six homegrown players at the club who have made their first-team bow - namely James Tomkins, Jack Collison, Mark Noble, Kyel Reid, Zavon Hines and Freddie Sears. Carr is optimistic they will not be the last. "The idea is the youth team every Saturday is the vehicle for young players to develop.

"Whether we win cups or are top or bottom of the league, the objective is the same and that is to push one or two players into that first team squad and that's the aim this year. We look at Freddie Sears and he's old hat now as he's been with the first team for nearly a year. So we're now looking at the next one or two that can make the step and hopefully by the end of the season one or two of them will have come to the fore."

West Ham appeal to CAS over Tevez  - BBC

West Ham have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as they attempt to avoid a huge payout to Sheffield United in the Carlos Tevez affair. CAS will now examine whether it has jurisdiction to hear the case, although a decision on this is not expected until the end of November. The Lausanne court initially stated its rules would not allow an appeal. Yet the fact it is willing to hold a preliminary hearing into its jurisdiction offers hope to West Ham. Last month, CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb told BBC Sport: "As things stand, CAS would not be able to hear this case. "We would need agreement from Sheffield United and for Football Association rules to allow an appeal to CAS." The Blades would be reluctant to give agreement to an appeal that could overturn the decision of the independent tribunal. The FA actually has a rule that stipulates there cannot be an appeal from the verdict of an independent tribunal. West Ham are expected to argue that the FA rules would be in breach of Fifa statutes if they did not allow for an appeal to CAS. An independent tribunal ruled West Ham broke Premier League rules when they played Tevez at the end of the 2006/7 season and that he then went on to play a key role in keeping them up. Sheffield United are claiming more than £30m in compensation from the Hammers.

Carr encouraged by Zola - WHUFC
Tony Carr is hoping a few more of his academy graduates will make a
first-team impact this season
15.10.2008

Tony Carr is excited about how the season is panning out and hopes that a
few more of his academy graduates will get their first taste of Premier
League action.

Carr is working closely with Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke to help plan
the youngsters' course into the first team and the West Ham United academy
director is delighted with the new manager's enthusiasm for promoting his
talented teenagers. "I think a lot of young players will blossom with
Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke with the way they are working them," Carr
said.

"Speaking to Gianfranco, he's very much youth-orientated and wants the young
players to do well and to give them opportunities. It's my responsibility to
ensure that they are good enough and hopefully we are taking steps in that
direction."

The likes of Marek Stech, Jordan Spence and Junior Stanislas are all on the
verge of joining the six homegrown players at the club who have made their
first-team bow - namely James Tomkins, Jack Collison, Mark Noble, Kyel Reid,
Zavon Hines and Freddie Sears. Carr is optimistic they will not be the last.
"The idea is the youth team every Saturday is the vehicle for young players
to develop.

"Whether we win cups or are top or bottom of the league, the objective is
the same and that is to push one or two players into that first team squad
and that's the aim this year. We look at Freddie Sears and he's old hat now
as he's been with the first team for nearly a year. So we're now looking at
the next one or two that can make the step and hopefully by the end of the
season one or two of them will have come to the fore."

Carr watched a reserve side featuring ten teenagers came up againt a Fulham
side full of internationals last week. United lost the match 4-1 but Carr is
sure it will have been a great lesson to the youngsters. "Making the step up
to reserve level is part of the process to becoming a professional player.
You've got to come out of your comfort zone, play in an open age environment
like the reserves and still got to be able to do your stuff. It's all part
of the learning process for all the players.

"Winning and losing is good experience for them. I know we lost we 4-1 at
Fulham, but in the early part of the game we gave as good as we took but we
couldn't keep it going. What you want is an ideal balance with perhaps two
or three senior players to play and help them through it. But some days,
like it was on last week, you have basically the youth team against their
reserves. It was going to be a tough call even before the kick-off."

Upson on the up - WHUFC
Matthew Upson is hoping to win his eleventh cap for England in Belarus on
Wednesday evening
15.10.2008

Matthew Upson is hoping to feature for England again in Belarus tonight -
and use the performance as a springboard to a place at the 2010 World Cup.

Upson started the 5-1 win over Kazakhstan at Wembley on Saturday and is
favourite to again partner captain Rio Ferdinand in central defence
following John Terry's withdrawal through injury. Robert Green, meanwhile,
also missed out on the trip to Minsk because of a sore knee but is expected
to be fit for the weekend game at Hull City.

"My goal is to play in the World Cup for England, that's my target," he
said. "You do have to visualise it, you have to picture it. Most great
things you do, you'll have pictured it before you've done it. So you'll
start at the end, which is achieving it, and work backwards, on how do I get
there? There's loads of factors involved, ups and downs and mishaps,
positive things; it's a process."

Although Ferdinand and Terry have been Fabio Capello's first-choice pairing
so far this season, the West Ham United No15 believes that he can force his
way into the starting XI. "I don't think being the captain or vice-captain
automatically means you are going to be picked," Upson said. "Things change
very quickly in football, be it injury or loss of form. Whatever it is, I
have to make sure I'm ready.

"Previously when I joined up with the squad, maybe I didn't believe I
deserved to be here. I think that only ends up in one way, with poor
performances. Now I fully believe I deserve to be here and am capable of
stepping in and doing a good job. I've been practicing my mental approach
for the last three or four years. It is something I've worked really hard on
and it is something that has benefited me more than anything else."

Bellamy ready for Germany - WHUFC
Craig Bellamy is delighted to be back playing and is hoping to lead Wales to
a famous win tonight
15.10.2008

Wales captain Craig Bellamy will lead his side into battle tonight against
the might of Germany.

The Welsh No8 made an impressive comeback on Saturday in a 2-0 win against
Liechtenstein at the Millennium Stadium and is pleased to be back playing
again. "It was good to get the game under my belt," Bellamy said. "I
desperately needed it and it was good for my confidence too. I've done
enough training but games are different. I feel good so it should be no
problem."

Bellamy had several chances at the weekend but could not mark his return
with a goal, but he remains confident. "Another one will come along and I
always fancy my chances. I probably won't get the same amount of chances as
I did on Saturday but when you have been out for a long time and you are
trying to finish it can take its toll on you."

The match in Monchengladbach will present a stern test to an improving Wales
side, who secured an impressive 0-0 draw in Frankfurt last November. "It's a
huge task, they are an outstanding side," Bellamy said. "They got to the
World Cup semi-finals and European final. People say this isn't the best
German side but they are doing really well in tournaments. They may say they
took their foot off the gas in Frankfurt but a lot of our boys will take
confidence from that match. Hopefully, we can go one better this time," he
said.

James Collins is also expected to make his first start for over a year
tonight after coming on as a substitute against Liechtenstein and Bellamy is
pleased to see his team-mate back in contention. "I've seen a lot of his
hard work. He has been in a similar situation to me and sometimes on a long
injury, it's difficult."

West Ham are being linked with a January move for Chelsea's England under 21
Michael Mancienne. The 20-year-old Isleworth-born centre-half has become
increasingly frustrated with life at Stamford Bridge having failed to break
through to the first team. And reports in this mornings tabloids suggest
that Gianfranco Zola wants to bring the youngster in on loan for the
remainder of the season. Mancienne has been at Chelsea since the age of
eight and made his reserve team debut as a schoolboy. He spent the 06/07
season on loan at QPR where he played mostly at right-back, but still did
enough to be voted runner-up Player fo the Year by Rangers fans. Having been
in and around the first team squad at Chelsea since he opted to sign a new
contract with the Blues only last summer. However a year on he finds himself
no closer to the first team. Steve Clarke, number two to Zola at United is
thought to have recommended the signing.

come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with Wales - a result that saw them

Cardiff last week. But the English found themselves hanging on for dear life
for the final 25 minutes fater Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone was shown a
straight red card after catching Cardiff City's Darcy Blake late. Wales -
featuring Noble's stablemate Jack Collison - were excellent on the night and
can consider themselves extremely unfortunate not to be taking their place
in the finals. Led by Brian Flynn, the Welsh were just a width of a post
away from going through after Sam Vokes' effort five minutes from time
bounced clear of Joe Hart's goal after striking the post. A relieved Pearce,
speaking after the game, said: "I'm fantastically proud of my players. To
lose a man was a blow but they stuck together and stood up in the face of
adversity. "We showed fantastic spirit and courage, especially after going
down to ten men. We know we have to improve - but that's something we will

Nani slams Behrami rumours - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 15th October 2008
By: Staff Writer

West Ham United technical director Gianluca Nani has dismissed reports
claiming that Valon Behrami is set to return to Italy. The Swiss midfielder
arrived in East London back in July and has received positive reviews for
his handful of games thus far this season. However the Italian press last
night carried a story in which Behrami's agent, Alessandro Beltrami, claim
that Serie A outfit Roma were keen to lure the 23-year-old back to Italy.
"Roma have inquired after Valon," he said. "Despite the whispers that
suggest the Giallorossi have no substantial funds to secure the transfer, I
have been told a different story. "I am currently in Brazil and I cannot
meet with the Lupi directors, but we will certainly set up a meeting over
the next few days to have a clear picture of the situation. "I repeat, Roma
have given me their word that they are keen on the lad and willing to close
a deal. However, we are in the early stages."
But Gianluca Nani moved swiftly to rebut Beltrami's suggestion that Behrami
may be able to return to Italy, by telling both the agent and Roma that
'Behrami is not for sale'. "I am tired of responding to questions on
Behrami," he said. "I repeat - Behrami is not for sale and Roma have never
asked for the player. "Before you start any kind of transfer, Rome must
speak with West Ham, which has not happened. Behrami is our player, we have
high hopes for him so I see no reason to sell. "Even if an offer arrived
from Rome for 50 million euros we would not sell. It is not a matter of
numbers but of will on our part to keep the player."

Interest mounts in Dortmund star - SSN
Keeper free to talk in January
Last updated: 15th October 2008

A number of Premier League clubs are looking to open talks with German
goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller in January, skysports.com understands. The
28-year-old is rated as one of the best goalkeepers in Germany and is on the
verge of an international call-up. Borussia Dortmund are desperate to hand
Weidenfeller a new long-term contract with his current deal set to expire at
the end of the season. However, the former Kaiserslautern shot-stopper is
set to take advantage of the fact that he is free to talk to rival clubs in
January. Dortmund have offered Weidenfeller a three-year deal - but with
clubs from England and Italy showing an interest, he could be set to depart
his homeland. A number of English scouts have been in attendance at the
Signal Iduna Park in recent weeks and have been impressed with that they
have seen and the fact he will be a free transfer next summer is sure to
appeal. German sources have claimed the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City,
West Ham, Bolton, Middlesbrough and Newcastle are amongst those interested.

Quashie hopeful of Blues chance - TeamTalk

West Ham midfielder Nigel Quashie is hopeful of securing a loan move to
Birmingham after coming through a reserve game with Manchester City. The
30-year-old is back to full fitness following a serious ankle injury and
after losing his mother to cancer earlier this month is hoping to be handed
a fresh start by Blues boss Alex McLeish. He told the Birmingham Post: "It
has been a really frustrating time and I did think I would have to pack in,
so I am grateful just to be playing again. "Losing my mum, who I was very
close to, as well has made it the hardest time of my life so I am due a bit
of luck after everything I have been through. "Everyone at Birmingham has
been fantastic. Alex has given me the chance to come here and train and if I
get an opportunity to come here and play it will be a massive sigh of
relief. "It would be great to be part of a club that is pushing to get back
into the top flight, and with the players we have here we can do it."

I'll repay Zola with loads of goals for West Ham, vows new Hammer Diego
Tristan - Daily Mail
By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 10:43 AM on 15th October 2008

Striker Diego Tristan is determined to repay Gianfranco Zola's faith in him
by "scoring lots of goals" for West Ham United. Former Spain international
Tristan yesterday signed a permanent deal at Upton Park after impressing on
a two-week trial. The 32-year-old, who becomes Zola's first signing as
manager, had been a free agent after leaving Italian side Livorno. Tristan
told the club's website, whufc.com: "The manager has spent lots of time
working with me. "He has helped me a lot and I want to say thanks to him by
scoring lots of goals and doing well for the club. "I am very grateful to
the manager for giving me the opportunity to play here.
"I have been really impressed from the moment I arrived at the training
ground. "The coaching staff and the players have all helped me to settle in.
I had a lot of offers to go to other countries and play for a lot of money
but I feel that I still have lots to offer. "I want to show West Ham fans
that I can still play at the highest level. That is why I am here."
The striker, who won 15 caps for Spain between 2001 and 2004, also played
for Deportivo La Coruna and Real Mallorca in his homeland. However, the 6ft
1in forward endured lean times at Livorno and scored just one goal in 20
appearances. He will be in contention to make his debut in Sunday's Barclays
Premier League match at Hull. Tristan added: "I have always been impressed
by English football whenever I have played here. "The stadiums and the fans
are great and it was always a dream of mine to come here and play. "Now my
dream is going to become reality. I am at a great club and I want to see if
I can help West Ham get into Europe and play at that level. English football
is very similar to Spanish in that it is very quick and technical. There is
more of an emphasis on attacking football so I will have more chances to
score goals. "In Italy, it was more defensive, and not easy for forwards to
get scoring opportunities. West Ham play the right way and that should help
me to do well."

Behrami Back To Base? - Reports - Goal.com

West Ham new summer recruit Valon Behrami is reportedly in negotiations to
secure a move back to Serie A and could sensationally return to Rome... to
wear Giallorosso. The Switzerland international's rapport with Lazio boss
Delio Rossi and chief Claudio Lotito had deteriorated over the last few
seasons and he had even threatened to take advantage of FIFA's Article 17 to
free himself from the Formello-based side. Eventually he managed to leave
the Stadio Olimpico and opted to depart Serie A to join Premier League
outfit West Ham, signing a five year contract in East London. But the
player's agent has set off the rumour mill today by revealing to website
Laromasiamonoi.it that the Lupi have allegedly made a move for the
23-year-old. "Roma have inquired after Valon," Alessandro Beltrami asserted,
"and despite the whispers that suggest the Giallorossi have no substantial
funds to secure the transfer, I have been told a different story. "I am
currently in Brazil for work and I cannot meet with the Lupi directors, but
we will certainly set up a meeting over the next few days to have a clear
picture of the situation. "I repeat, Roma have given me their word that they
are keen on the lad and willing to close a deal. However, we are just in
ther early stages." Hammers' sporting director Gianluca Nani had previously
denied that the Eternal City side were chasing the gifted midfield man.

West Ham United chief Gianluca Nani has dismissed reports that they will

Former West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand is grateful to Sunderland's fans
for the way they've welcomed him. "The Sunderland fans have made me feel
welcome - I've enjoyed it. At West Ham I was the kid who came through the
ranks but here I've been brought to the team to make them better," he told
The Journal. "It's different - I was saying to my girlfriend and to my
family that it's mad because I'm not used to getting the loudest cheer. Now
when my name gets called I'm getting potentially the loudest cheer and it's
crazy. But it's a great feeling. "I don't normally think about it but I

Ferdinand confident he can make England breakthrough at Sunderland
15.10.08 | tribalfootball.com

Former West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand is confident he can fulfill his
England ambitions with Sunderland. "My number one priority is playing well
for Sunderland and being part of what we're trying to achieve here.
Obviously I want to play for England too and I'm only 23," he told The
Journal. "I can see it being in my grasp in the next year or two if I do
well for Sunderland. If I do that then hopefully I'll get the call - if I
don't then I need to work harder. "Obviously there are people in the squad
who are doing things that I'm not doing at the moment and I've got to try
and work out what those things are and get better at them. "Experience in
big games is what I need - I'm only 23 and I've played in big games but I'm
talking about Champions League games and playing in Europe. I think the
biggest thing for me is consistency. I think my biggest downfall is that
I've been inconsistent in the past. I need to be consistent through a season
and - touch wood - to not have injuries either and then I'll have a chance."

Tristan deal completed - WHUFC
Diego Tristan has signed for West Ham United to give Gianfranco Zola plenty
of striking options
14.10.2008

West Ham United have completed the signing of Diego Tristan on a permanent
contract with the Spanish striker becoming the first new recruit under
Gianfranco Zola.

The 32-year-old, capped 15 times by his country, has been without a club
since leaving Serie A side Livorno at the end of last season and is
determined to hit the heights of his spells at Mallorca and Deportivo La
Coruna. "I am really happy to be at West Ham. They are a big club and London
is a great city," he said. "I want to show the fans that I can score goals
and help the team to go up the league. I am excited to be here."

Tristan put pen to paper with Scott Duxbury on Tuesday evening after the CEO
had flown to Rome to finalise negotiations with his representatives, with
several leading clubs having also expressed their interest. The club's new
No25 had particular words of praise for the manager, who has been running
the rule over Tristan for the past fortnight at Chadwell Heath.

"The manager has spent lots of time working with me," he said. "He has
helped me a lot and I want to say thanks to him by scoring lots of goals and
doing well for the club. I am very grateful to the manager for giving me the
opportunity to play here.

"I have been really impressed from the moment I arrived at the training
ground. The coaching staff and the players have all helped me to settle in.
I had a lot of offers to go to other countries and play for a lot of money
but I feel that I still have lots to offer and I want to show West Ham fans
that I can still play at the highest level. That is why I am here."

The 6'1 forward could make his debut away to Hull City this Sunday. He is
well aware of English football, having made a particular impression in the
Champions League back in October 2001 when he scored twice to help Depor to
a memorable 3-2 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. A month later
he followed that with a goal in a 2-0 home win against Arsenal.

He said: "I have always been impressed by English football whenever I have
played here. The stadiums and the fans are great and it was always a dream
of mine to come here and play. Now my dream is going to become reality. I am
at a great club and I want to see if I can help West Ham get into Europe and
play at that level."

Tristan, who played at the 2002 World Cup and has scored four goals for his
country, expects the English game to better suit his style after his year in
Italy. He will be hoping to match the heights of previous years in the
Primera Division when he scored 78 goals in 177 league games overall for
Deportivo, having hit 18 from 35 games in the 1999/00 campaign for Mallorca.

"English football is very similar to Spanish in that it is very quick and
technical. There is more of an emphasis on attacking football so I will have
more chances to score goals. In Italy, it was more defensive, and not easy
for forwards to get scoring opportunities. West Ham play the right way and
that should help me to do well."

West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "I am delighted that we have been
able to secure the services of Diego Tristan, who is an experienced striker
and has already had a positive impact. Diego will provide extra competition
in attack and the manager has been impressed with his attitude and ability
in training.

"The focus for our squad is about quality not quantity and we are sure that
Diego is a quality addition. This signing indicates that we are thinking
only of the future progress of West Ham United."

Noble off to finals - WHUFC
Mark Noble has played a major role as England won through to next summer's
U21 Euro in Sweden
14.10.2008

England have won through to the 2009 European Under-21 Championship after a
2-2 home draw against Wales secured a 5-4 aggregate success in their
play-off.

The victory means Mark Noble is contemplating a second successive trip to
the Euro finals after helping the Young Lions to the 2007 semi-finals.
England have not lost in 90 minutes from 27 matches but they were pushed all
the way at Villa Park by a Wales side featuring an impressive Jack Collison.
However, they held firm after a 3-2 success in Cardiff and can look forward
to the eight-nation tournament in Sweden next summer

Tom Huddlestone put the home side on their way with a free-kick before Aaron
Ramsey's stunning goal levelled matters. Ramsey then set up Simon Church to
put the visitors in front midway through the half before a Sam Vokes own
goal ensured parity at the break. England's task was made more difficult in
the second half with Huddlestone's late dismissal but, with Noble adopting
more defensive duties, Stuart Pearce's men hung on.

Talking to Setanta Sports, Noble said: "[After the sending off] we had 25
minutes of sitting behind the ball but in spells we thought we were going to
score again. As a team we do that so well. We are disappointed with the
goals we have conceded in the last two legs. We can learn from that and
hopefully take that learning curve into the Championship.

"We got so close [in the 2007 finals] and were so disappointed. Hopefully
the players we have got, we can really kick on. Some big teams have gone out
and we think we have got a chance."

As well as England and hosts Sweden, the other teams through so far are
Finland and Belarus with four other nations yet to be decided.

taking charge in September.
"Zola has helped me a lot and I want to say thanks by scoring lots of goals

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of 32-year-old journeyman Diego
Tristan. The veteran striker - out of football since the summer having been
released by relegated Livorono - had spent the last two weeks on trial at
Chadwell Heath in order to allow Steve Clarke and Gianfranco Zola to run the
rule over the former Spanish international. Tonight the club confirmed that
a deal had been agreed and signed, with the 15-times capped striker landing
a permanent deal of undisclosed length.
Talking to whufc.com, Tristan said: "I am really happy to be at West Ham.
They are a big club and London is a great city. "I have been really

can score goals and help the team to go up the league. I am excited to be

United CEO Scott Duxbury, speaking having overseen the fourth incoming free
transfer since the closure of the summer transfer window added: "I am
delighted that we have been able to secure the services of Diego, who is an
experienced striker and has already had a positive impact. He will provide
extra competition in attack and the manager has been impressed with his
attitude and ability in training. "The focus for our squad is about quality

Zola To Swoop For Chelsea Starlet - Goal.com

Recently appointed West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola has been tipped to
snap up Chelsea youngster Michael Mancienne...
The collapse of both West Ham's shirt sponsor XL and Icelandic bank
Landsbanki, which is owned by Hammers' chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, has
left the club with an ultra-tight budget. The East London outfit are also
poised to fork out a huge sum of money to Sheffield United over the Carlos
Tevez saga. Rookie boss Gianfranco Zola recently said he was reasonably
happy with his squad in any case and was looking forward to seeing the Upton
Park injury list start to diminish.
However, the former Italy U21 No.2 is always keen to consider exciting young
talents and believes Chelsea starlet Michael Mancienne is ready for
Premiership football. The 20-year-old is unsurprisingly struggling to break
into the Blues first team plans, despite having been invited along for
pre-season training, and cash-strapped Zola has been tipped to grab him on
loan in January. The enthusiastic former Chelsea striker is hoping his
former club will allow the flexible England U21 defender to join his Hammers
revolution in the New Year. Impatient Mancienne told The Sun: "My education
at Chelsea has been top class, but I am at a stage now where I need to play
first-team football. I feel ready to test myself at the highest level."

Wales striker Craig Bellamy determined to make up for lost time against
Germany - Telegraph
When Craig Bellamy leads Wales out against Germany in Moenchengladbach the
West Ham striker will wear his heart under his sleeve.
By John Ley in Dusseldorf
Last Updated: 8:37AM BST 15 Oct 2008

Bellamy wants to evoke the spirit and passion for his country, as depicted
in a tattoo on his right arm, by Owain Glyndwr during the Welsh Revolt
against the rule of Henry IV. Wales held Germany to a goalless draw in
Frankfurt in November, and following a promising start to their World Cup
campaign, a similar result would put the Principality in a strong position.
Bellamy returned to international duty on Saturday, after a year out through
injury, and inspired Wales to a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein. Facing Germany
may be a daunting prospect but there is an air of confidence about the Wales
party here, with Bellamy determined to make up for lost time. "Owain Glyndwr
is a big Welsh hero, the biggest Welsh hero we've ever had," said Bellamy,
"I've been out injured for a while, so I had the tattoo done then. I'm
massive on him. I've done my Welsh history and he's sort of my hero – with
what he stood for."
Bellamy's arm depicts a famous battle involving his hero and he added: "I've
been working on it for about two-and-a-half years. I'm Welsh, so I want to
know about how we are where we are in the world. I enjoy history. I think we
need to do more of it in Wales."
Bellamy could go some way to shaping the future annals of Welsh sport in
Moenchengladbach but he accepts the task is huge, particularly against a
country with 11 goals to their credit in three games. "It's a huge task,
they are an outstanding side," added Bellamy. "People say this isn't the
best German side they are doing really well in tournaments. They qualify.
"It's a tough ask. They may say they took their foot off the gas in
Frankfurt but a lot of our boys will take confidence from that match.
Hopefully, we can go one better."
It may come as little surprise to discover that, with 20 months to go to the
finals, Germany are to send a three-man delegation to South Africa on a
fact-finding mission, where they will select their hotels and training
headquarters. But Wales's confidence emanates from the fact that John
Toshack's side created 23 goalscoring chances against Liechtenstein –
England managed only 20 against Kazakhstan. Toshack is expected to revert to
a five man defence and that may involve West Ham's James Collins, who has
not started a game since January. Germany, meanwhile, are expected to be
without influential captain Michael Ballack, after the Chelsea midfielder
injury a calf during Saturday's 2-1 win over Russia.

Team details

Germany (4-4-2): Adler (B Leverkusen); Friedrich (Hertha Berlin),

Zabeel dismiss talk of West Ham Utd takeover - ArabianBusiness.com
by Andy Sambidge
Wednesday, 15 October 2008

HAMMER TIME: Zabeel denied reports linking the company to a buyout of West
Ham United. (Getty Images)Dubai-based company Zabeel Investments have denied
reports that they will launch a takeover bid for troubled Premier League
club West Ham United. The group, which is currently in talks with
Championship side Charlton Athletic and has made an indicative offer for the
club which is being considered, has denied that they are interested making a
move for the Hammers. A statement released by the group said: "There is no
truth to media reports that Zabeel Investments made an approach to West Ham
Football Club. "Zabeel Investments has not approached any club since it made
an indicative offer for Charlton Athletic last Friday, nor has it authorised
any approach on its behalf. Zabeel Investments is currently in the due
diligence phase of its offer to Charlton Athletic and it is therefore
inappropriate to comment further at this stage."
Speculation has been rife surrounding a number of potential suitors for West
Ham after club owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson was sacked from his position as
chairman of Icelandic bank Landsbanki after it was taken into receivership,
in which he was a major shareholder. The Hammers chairman has confirmed that
the developments will bare no consequence on the club, although reports
continue to suggest it may be put up for sale.

Craig's call to arms: Bellamy will wear his heart under his sleeve for Wales
By Neil Moxley - Daily Mail
Last updated at 12:24 AM on 15th October 2008

Craig Bellamy has often been accused of wearing his heart on his sleeve. on
Wednesday night, he will wear his heart under it. On the eve of Wales's
World Cup qualifier in Germany, the country's skipper chose the perfect
moment to issue his call to arms by unveiling a spectacular example of body
art. Bellamy's tattoo tribute to medieval Welsh nationalist Owain Glyndwr
was two years in the making and is designed around the name of his son,
Cameron, which was already emblazoned on his arm. The West Ham striker, who
grew up on a tough council estate in Cardiff, is a confirmed patriot. He
said only last week he will never retire from international football and
after unveiling the artwork, he was keen to stress just how much his country
means to him. When asked, he said: 'It's Owain Glyndwr. I've studied my
Welsh history and he's my hero, what he stood for and who he was. 'So I've
had the Battle of Pilleth depicted on my arm. It's my own design, but the
artist came up with his ideas, too. We sort of bounced them off each other.'

The Battle of Pilleth was fought in 1402 and won by the Welsh, but the
English triumphed in the return leg, so to speak. Bellamy was not part of
the Wales team who pulled off a goalless draw in Frankfurt last season, when
Germany had already qualified for the European Championship. Wales boss John
Toshack laughed off news that tonight's hosts are already planning to run
the rule over potential bases for the 2010 World Cup. He said before the
game in Moenchengladbach: 'The Germans are an outstanding side. It's a tough
ask here. They may say they took their foot off the gas in Frankfurt but a
lot of our boys will take confidence from that match.'
