Dean Ashton has made his long-awaited England debut with a creditable 45-minute display in the 3-0 friendly win away to Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old striker missed out on a first cap last Wednesday in the 2-0 home win against the United States but he was named alongside Jermain Defoe in Fabio Capello's starting lineup in Port of Spain. Ashton turned in a hard-working performance, especially in terms of his link-up play with Defoe, but only twice had shooting opportunities. The first was a fifth-minute run and shot that sailed over the crossbar before a 37th-minute volley from David Beckham's ball saw Ashton drop off his defender well but unable to keep the effort down.

The No9 made way at half-time, one of three interval substitutions, with Peter Crouch coming on his place. By then, England were two goals up, with Ashton having been involved in the opener for Gareth Barry on 12 minutes before Defoe struck his first three minutes later. The West Ham United academy product, now at Portsmouth, added a second early in the second half. Although off the pitch by then, Ashton, who has joined club-mates Robert Green, Matthew Upson, Kieron Dyer and Scott Parker in earning England recognition, will have every hope of further international appearances.

Pantsil begins road to finals - WHUFC
John Pantsil is being spurred on by memories of Germany 2006 in Ghana's World Cup qualifying bid

John Pantsil helped Ghana off to a flying start in their qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup with a rousing 3-0 home win against Libya on Sunday.

The Black Stars reached the second round of the 2006 finals in Germany and West Ham United full-back Pantsil is determined to help his country get to the 2010 edition in South Africa. He said: "It is an experience that changed the lives of many of us so naturally we want to do it all over again. It would be painful to have to watch it again on TV after being an integral part of it the last time round."

On Sunday, Ghana were comfortable winners through goals from Prince Tagoe, Junior Agogo and Laryea Kingston. Pantsil was directly involved in the second, crossing for Agogo to score with his head. Ghana have three more first group round matches to play in their African qualifying zone this month. Next up is a trip to play Lesotho in Johannesburg next weekend before away and home matches against Gabon on 14 and 22 June. Overall 20 teams will progress to the second group round, with the five group winners from that stage all going to South Africa.

Elsewhere in World Cup qualification action on Sunday, Lucas Neill, absent for family reasons, will have been delighted to see Australia keep their fine form going in the Asian zone with a 1-0 win against Iraq in Brisbane. The two nations will meet again for Iraq's 'home' fixture in Dubai next Saturday. Australia also have further qualifiers in Qatar on 14 June and at home against China in Sydney on 22 June.

Ljungberg back in action - WHUFC
Freddie Ljungberg played for Sweden on Sunday, nine days before they start at the Euro 2008 finals

Freddie Ljungberg has returned to action for Sweden in a 1-0 home defeat by Ukraine in the final friendly before the start of their Euro 2008 campaign on 10 June.

The West Ham United captain missed the final two games of the Premier League season with a rib injury suffered on 26 April and was also missing for his country in last week's warm-up encounter with Slovenia. Ljungberg came on at half-time in Stockholm as a replacement for Sebastian Larsson and instantly linked up with an experienced forward line of Henrik Larsson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, Sweden, who made six second-half changes, were undone by a late winner from Serhiy Nazarenko. At the finals in Switzerland and Austria, Sweden have been drawn in Group D along with Greece, Spain and Russia. They open against the Greeks, the defending champions, in Salzburg on 10 June.

Craig Bellamy and Jack Collison figured as Wales were beaten by a strong Netherlands side on Sunday

Craig Bellamy continued his return to fitness and form with a second-half appearance alongside Jack Collison for Wales away to the Netherlands on Sunday afternoon.

The West Ham United striker got his second run-out off the bench for John Toshack's men in five days after having played for just under half-an-hour in last Wednesday's 1-0 win in Iceland. In front of 50,000 fans at a packed De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam, Bellamy arrived in the 56th minute, with Wales already two goals behind and immediately took the captain's armband from Jason Koumas. He joined club-mate Jack Collison, with the 19-year-old reserve-team captain having come on at half-time for his second senior international cap.

An extremely youthful Wales side were undone by strikes from Real Madrid duo Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder - with a superb free-kick - in each half. Toshack's side did appear more of a threat with Bellamy's appearance but they were up against an experienced side who are one of the leading contenders for the Euro 2008 finals when they get under way next weekend. The West Ham United No10 did get a chance to pull one back in the 85th minute when he superbly sprung the offside trap and raced clear, only to be denied by Edwin van der Sar.

Tomka and Sears reach finals - WHUFC
James Tomkins and Freddie Sears will have a major UEFA finals to look forward to later in the summer

James Tomkins and Freddie Sears are set to compete at the European Under-19 Championship in the Czech Republic this July after helping England qualify on Saturday.

The West Ham United duo played key roles as the Young Lions secured a 0-0 draw and the point they needed to progress against Elite round mini-tournament hosts Belarus, having already won 2-0 and 1-0 against Serbia and Poland respectively in the other two Group 1 fixtures earlier this week. The finals will be held between 14 and 26 July and, as well as the hosting Czechs, will also feature Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain - the defending champions.

England could feasibly call upon two other United players with both 17-year-old Jordan Spence, the current U18 captain, and attacking midfielder Junior Stanislas also having been capped at this level. Both missed out on Brian Eastick's selection for this final qualifying round but could yet be in contention later this summer. Sears and Tomkins more than played their part in this stage with Sears scoring both goals in the first victory and Tomkins helping to secure three successive clean sheets. Another possible player on view at the finals could be 18-year-old goalkeeper Marek Stech, who may be selected by the Czech Republic.

Paris Saint Germain defender Sammy Traore says he would sign for West Ham straight away if the Hammers want him. He has made his 'come and get me' plea after finding his opportunities at the Parisian club limited under the tenure of Paul Le Guen. The player, who has returned to PSG after a year-long loan spell at Auxerre, would relish the challenge if Upton Park boss Alan Curbishley came knocking. He told football365.fr: "England is a championship which attracts me and which attracts many people. "To leave for England would be a good thing. Now, I did not say that I was going to sign for a club like Arsenal, Manchester United or a club like that. "There are good English clubs where you can open out. A club like West Ham is a very good club. If a club like that calls me, I would sign straight away."
But if no offers are made, then the defender will stay and fight for his place in the PSG side. "I will study the proposals as well as possible but if nothing interests me, there remains a year's contract in Paris," he said. "If I must begin the season on the bench, it is not a concern. It is like everywhere: competition exists in all the clubs. I never said that I hold the power."
Meanwhile, former PSG defender Bernard Mendy has confirmed Premier League clubs are interested in his signature. But the right-back, who is a free agent, denied reports in the press linking him with Fulham and West Brom. The player, who experienced English football in a loan spell at Bolton in 2002-3, also spoke of interest from Lyon. He told football365.fr: "That is true that my experience at Bolton was superb but I repeat it: I am open to every proposition. "In France and abroad. I will know soon. But today, the most concrete contacts come from England. "I have been told about Premier League clubs but not Fulham and West Bromwich. "But why not tempting an experience at Lyon."

Negredo waits on future - SSN

Alvaro Negredo's future will be decided next week, after reports suggested two Premier League club's had launched bids to land him. The striker left Real Madrid last summer and joined Almeria, and he shone with 13 goals in La Liga and helped the minnows retain their top-flight status. However, Real inserted a buy-back clause in the deal and they will now take the player back for 4 million euros (£3.1million) before selling him on - with reports claiming he could go for up to 12 million euros (£9.4million). It is claimed in Spain that two English sides have made bids for the exciting 22-year-old, with some sources suggesting the two clubs as Newcastle and West Ham. Tottenham have also been credited with an interest after they scouted him late last year. Now Negredo's agent Junma Lopez says he will meet with Real next week to talk over his future. "We still have not had any news from Real and I will attend a meeting next week to clear the subject," he said. "If Real does not accept a deal then he will remain with Almeria."

Michael Kightly is on the verge of moving to the Premier League, according to the boss of his former club Grays Athletic. Kightly, 22, left Grays for Wolves in late 2006 and he has gone on to emerge as one of the most highly-rated players outside the top-flight. Grays still have a vested interest in Kightly, as they will benefit from a sell-on clause should he leave Molineux. Owner-manager Mick Woodward has claimed Blackburn, Everton and West Ham have all made bids for the England Under-21 ace. "I think you'll see Michael Kightly move very shortly," Woodward told The Non-League Paper. "I know Everton, West Ham and Blackburn have come in for him and a club has put a £4 million bid in already. "People will see who they can get rid of first. West Ham are going to have a good clear-out because they've got too many 'Big-Time Charlies' and they want players who are hungry. Kightly fits that bill perfectly."

West Ham Must Avoid Becoming A Feeder Club Again - West Ham Fans.org

West Ham United have produced more home grown talent through their academy, run by 'Sir' Tony Carr, than virtually any other Premier League club. The amount of players who learned their trade at West Ham but lined up to play in the Champions League final and to play for England is testimony to Carr's outstanding achievement. Youngsters Freddy Sears, James Tomkins and Jack Collison have all featured for the first team and will hopefully progress further next season, so there should be no need to sell off any of the 'crown jewels' that are already at the club!

Media reports that Anton Ferdinand is up for sale are increasingly gathering pace, but why should Hammers want to sell a player who could still go on to represent his country at senior level? It would be too easy to jump on the "Curbs doesn't get on with him" bandwagon, but it should be remembered that this is the same manager that managed to sell on Marlon Harewood for £4 Million to Aston Villa, and let's face it dear old 'Marlene' has hardly been pulling up many trees there has he?

Anton will always be in brother Rio's shadow, but he has shown enough to get 'those awful ones' who are Arsenal's inferior neighbours to start sniffing around! Perhaps Hammers should offer Anton Ferdinand as a straight swap for Darren Bent, the financial disparity in their respective values may go some way towards compensating for the amount of money that was made by the sale of Michael Carrick to Manchester United. Selling players with potential to London rivals is a sure fire way of getting your own supporters annoyed and frustrated, a point that surely cannot have been overlooked by Alan Curbishley, a man who has struggled to win over the Upton Park faithful and is probably in need of a complete public image make over. - Ed

Spurs set to swoop for West Ham's Ferdinand

Tottenham are set to land West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand in a £6 million deal. The News of the World says Ferdinand has been on Tottenham's hit-list for a couple of seasons and Juande Ramos will try and tie up a deal over the next couple of weeks after seeing Richard Dunne slip through the net.
Ferdinand, 23, has been at Upton Park for six years and the Hammers turned down a £4m offer from Spurs a couple of seasons ago. But boss Alan Curbishley needs to cut the extravagant wage bill and he has plenty of options in the central defensive area. And Curbs is likely to see £6m as good value for Ferdinand, who has not quite lived up to expectations in the last couple of years.

Dean Ashton sees no reason why he cannot not only get his England debut but
then stay in the team

Dean Ashton has been speaking to the media as he prepares for the prospect
of his first England cap in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday night.

The West Ham United striker is in the frame for his senior bow in the Port
of Spain game, which kicks off at 10.30pm UK time, after having to sit out
on Wednesday when Fabio Capello's men were 2-0 winners against the United
States. With Michael Owen absent with a virus and Wayne Rooney rested, there
is every prospect of Ashton being capped nearly two years after an ankle
injury ended his original England dreams. Prior to that August 2006 setback
which cost him a whole season, Ashton was flying for West Ham United - not
least in the memorable run to the previous May's FA Cup final.

"It has been two difficult years," he said. " There were a few doubters who
didn't think I would get back to where I was - so I'm pleased to be here. No
one thought I would be able to return to the level of performance - yet I
always knew I had the ability. I missed out on a whole season and I have a
point to prove. I will be working as hard as anyone to get in. That FA Cup
final against Liverpool seems a long time ago now."

West Ham United have reaped the benefits of Ashton's return to form, with
the striker scoring five goals in his last eight matches at the end of the
2007/08 campaign to repay those supporters who continued to chant his name
throughout the campaign. "I have shown with my goals in a limited season
that I am back to the player I was, perhaps even better, and I certainly
feel stronger mentally. Nothing will stop me searching for my goal - that is
to get in this England team and take the chance when it comes."

While competition for places is fierce - he is battling with Peter Crouch,
Gabriel Agbonlahor, Theo Walcott and midweek starter Jermain Defoe - Ashton
knows he has every chance of being a regular for the 2010 World Cup
qualifying campaign. "If I play well for my club, I know I can show I am
good enough. The squad has been broadened out and it gives me great heart.
Just to be here means [Capello] thinks highly of us all. He must see I am
doing well. Wayne Rooney is an unbelievable player and I know I can get in
the team as well. I have belief and was pleased with my ten Premier League
goals when I got my form back during the season. I will always score goals."

James Tomkins and Freddie Sears will be in action again for England on
Saturday afternoon with the small matter of a place at July's European
Under-19 Championship up for grabs.

The West Ham United duo have helped England to two wins from two matches in
a four-nation mini-tournament in Belarus, meaning a point from their final
game against the host nation in Minsk will be enough to book their place in
the Czech Republic. The final round will be played between 14 and 26 July,
with the Czechs already sure to be joined by Spain, Bulgaria, Greece,
Hungary, Germany and either Italy or France.

The Young Lions' decisive match will take place from 2pm UK time, with group
rivals Serbia and Poland meeting simultaneously in Borisov. Both Serbia and
Belarus can still overhaul England if Brian Eastick's men are defeated.
England's first match was a 2-0 defeat of Poland last Monday, thanks to
Freddie Sears' double, before a James Henry goal saw off Serbia by a 1-0
margin on Wednesday. The 19-year-old defender Tomkins has played the full
game in both matches while striker Sears, 18, was substituted late on in the
second fixture.

Speaking to theFA.com, Tomkins said: "Its great having Freddie over here
with me. We all know that he's a quality player and he's shown it for the
West Ham first team this year. "Both of us get on really well with the other
lads in the squad." Although on international duty, he is already thinking
about next season back at the Boleyn. "It's going to be tough as players
like [Danny] Gabbidon and [James] Collins will be back from injury and in
contention but I'll knuckle down in pre-season and hopefully I can make an
impact."

Dean Ashton has been speaking about his future international hopes on the
eve of England's friendly clash with Trinidad & Tobago. United striker
Ashton is in the Caribbean with Fabio Capello's squad and has been widely
tipped to make his England debut in what promises to be a much changed side
from that which beat the USA 2-0 at Wembley on Wednesday. Ashton was just a
spectator on that occasion but hopes to win his first cap this weekend - and
says that if given the chance, he intends to prove that he can challenge for
a regular spot. Talking to The Guardian, he said: "It's been two very, very
difficult years. I've had a few doubters so I'm really pleased to have got
back to this stage. When a new manager comes in you hope you can impress and
that he's going to look at new players. "I find it hard when people say
there's not much talent behind Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen because I think
there is. I'm part of that group that's more than capable of performing at
that level. "Players are picked who've played well for their clubs, no
matter what," he added. "That's why I think the players who haven't been in
think we've got the chance to take those places. I'm not saying Wayne Rooney
isn't an unbelievable player but I feel I can get in the team as well. "We
are constantly hearing there's no good English players about but I'd beg to
differ. Sometimes it takes just being given a chance to impress."
The match, which is being played at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of

Dean Ashton feels he has a point to prove after battling back from injury to
be on the verge of earning his first England cap. The West Ham striker is
hoping to make his debut against Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday - two years
after cruelly suffering a broken ankle in training on the eve of a friendly
against Greece. That break ruled him out for a year and the target man has
since suffered an injury-hit season. But the 24-year-old finished on a
flourish, scoring three goals in his last three games to take his tally to
11 for the season and earn a place in Fabio Capello's squad. "It is gutting
to think two years have gone by since then," said Ashton, who was left on
the bench against USA on Wednesday. "You can't really sum it up. It's gone
very quickly and I missed out on a whole year when perhaps I could have
played well against Greece and been in the squad from then on. "I feel I
have a point to prove and obviously I'll be working as hard as anyone to get
my place. "In the latter part of the season with my goals and the way I
played I've shown that is all behind me and I'm back to the player I was,
maybe better with the mental side of it. "You have to be strong mentally to
get back to this position. If I get my chance I'll be strong enough to take
it."
Ashton believes his strength lies with his footballing brain, as opposed to
others who have raw pace. "I don't think Teddy Sheringham had electric pace,
I like to think my pace I have is in my brain and the way I play and
hopefully that is enough," he added. "I'm not particularly slow. I'm not as
quick as Gabriel Agbonlahor and players like that but there are quite a few
of them about."
Ashton may well get his chance on Sunday as Capello rests several players
involved in the UEFA Champions League final. The Italian has already shown
that he will select players outside of the 'big four' clubs, which gives
Ashton encouragement. "The manager has shown so far that it doesn't matter
where you've been in the past, it's what you are doing at the time," he
continued. "The players in the Champions League are obviously more likely to
play but if I can play well enough for my club and get my chance here I
believe I can show that I'm good enough. "We're constantly hearing that
there are no good English players about but I beg to differ, sometimes it
takes being given a chance to impress."

Rumours continue to persist that Alan Curbishley is looking to offload Anton
Ferdinand as part of his summer cull. The younger brother of England and
Manchester United captain Rio had a mixed season last term which was
punctuated by injury. Now today's Daily Mirror claims that Curbishley is
looking to sell the 23-year-old in order to generate funds for a
replacement. The paper claims further that United will hold out for a fee in
the region of £5 million for the former England under 21. Meanwhile one
supposed summer transfer target, Manchester City's Richard Dunne looks set
to sign for Tottenham later this week, according to various sources. The
28-year-old centre-half has been voted City's player of the year for the
last four years running and is on his way out of the club. A number of
Premier League clubs - including Newcastle and Everton - were said to be
keen on landing the Irish international.

West Ham have a made a surprise decision to put defender Anton Ferdinand up
for sale according to the Daily Mirror. The move is believed to be part of
West Ham's aim to cut the clubs' wage bill radically, with Ferdinand
believed to be on around £1.2 million a year at Upton Park. Ferdinand, 23,
has on numerous occasions been rated as one of West Ham's top prospects, and
his powerful defensive performances attracted the attention of many top
clubs. Ferdinand is also well known due to his family links with brother Rio
and cousin Les. The decision is sure to alert a number of Premiership clubs
including Tottenham who reportedly had a bid turned down for the centre-back
over a year ago. The Daily Mirror claims that Ferdinand has struggled to win
the admiration of manager Alan Curbishley since the ex-Charlton boss took
over at Upton Park.

Terence Brown sues West Ham for £5m - Telegraph

Former West Ham chairman Terence Brown, who left the club last year, has
launched a legal battle for damages of more than £5 million.

Brown, who was the target of fans' protests at Upton Park, claims he was
sacked without notice and is seeking damages for the loss of his £492,000
yearly salary and chauffeur. He is also seeking recompense for loss of
pension contributions and mileage allowance, as well as the use of eight
seats in the directors' box, hospitality places, and car parking for the
rest of his life.

Brown became chairman of West Ham in 1992, and also owned 35.6 per cent of
the shares until December 2006, when he resigned as chairman. He became
honorary life vice president and kept his chauffeur, Richard Corbett, until
April 20 last year, according to a High Court writ.

Brown says he agreed that he would resign as a club director and executive
chairman in November 2006, becoming deputy vice-chairman, and a
non-executive director, and would be given the title of honorary life vice
president.He claims he was to be given eight seats in the directors' box,
eight hospitality places in the chairman's suite, two tickets in the
directors' box and boardroom at away matches, two on-site parking spaces,
and one parking space at away matches.

He accuses West Ham of breaching the agreement when, he says, they wrote on
May 1 last year sacking him without notice, and without paying him the value
of his salary and other benefits. West Ham are expected to contest the
claim.

Inexperience insulates this England squad from the torpor associated with
friendlies so late in the season. Of the 23 men available to face Trindad &
Tobago here tomorrow evening, eight are awaiting an international debut.
Dean Ashton, in particular, has had a long, frustrating time in which to
develop his craving.

He would have got one in August 2006, against Greece, had it not been for
the broken ankle he sustained in a training session. Fitness and then form
eluded the West Ham striker after that. If he had hoped for a sentimental
gesture from Fabio Capello on Wednesday, he must have been disappointed when
he did not make an appearance against the United States.

The prospects have improved now that only Wayne Bridge and Rio Ferdinand
remain in the party from the players whose clubs contested the Champions
League final. All the same Liverpool's Peter Crouch would still outrank him
if Capello were selecting the side by prestige alone.

Ashton is no rebel but he did bridle at the hierarchical viewpoint earlier
this season. "I find it hard when people say there's not much talent behind
Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen," he admitted then, "because I think there is.
I'm part of that group that's more than capable of performing at that
level."

His attitude is unaltered. "It's been two very, very difficult years," he
said yesterday. "I've had a few doubters, so I'm really pleased to have got
back to this stage. When a new [England] manager comes in you hope you can
impress and that he's going to look at new players.

"Players are picked who've played well for their clubs, no matter what.
That's why I think the players who haven't been in think we've got the
chance to take those places. I'm not saying Wayne Rooney isn't an
unbelievable player but I feel I can get in the team as well."

Ashton's comparatively humble origins are apparent when he mentions that he
looks forward to catching up with the T&T goalkeeper Clayton Ince. Both of
them were once with Crewe. They have gone separate ways, however, and now
West Ham are in negotiations with Ashton over a new contract.

His employers will feel, as he does, that a target man with good technique
continues to be an influential figure in modern football. "I like to provide
as well as score goals for myself," Ashton said. "I don't think Teddy
Sheringham had electric pace. The pace I have is in my brain. I'm not
particularly slow; obviously I'm not as quick as Gabriel Agbonlahor and
players like that, but there are quite a few of them about."

Agbonlahor, indeed, may get his own first cap. Ashton, of course, had not
really been noticed by the general public since he was outstanding for West
Ham in the 2006 FA Cup final, which Liverpool eventually won in a shoot-out
after an extraordinary goal by Steven Gerrard had spared them defeat at the
very end on normal time.

If Ashton is particularly adamant about his merits, it must be because the
self-regard has been essential to sustain him over the past two years. At
only 24, however, he is also entitled to think that he has a stake in the
future. Although opinions will differ as to whether he is good enough to
flourish among the elite, he states the case forcefully for himself and
others of similar background. "We are constantly hearing there's no good
English players about but I'd beg to differ," he said. "Sometimes it takes
just being given a chance to impress."

The Champions League cartel has been cracked if not shattered this weekend.
Although the absent Wes Brown, Owen Hargreaves, Wayne Rooney, John Terry,
Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Joe Cole need not fear for their
international futures, it would be heartening to see others do well
tomorrow.

The element of romance is most pronounced in the case of the Peterborough
goalkeeper Joe Lewis. At the start of the season he went on loan from
Norwich, where he had known Ashton, to Morecambe. "I was struggling to get a
club," he admitted. "Nobody really wanted me." His agent even feared it
might set him back if Morecambe, freshly promoted to League Two from the
Conference, were thrashed each week.

Lewis took the more positive view that he could "be the star" if he was kept
busy. It was, in fact, a stable season for Morecambe and Peterborough bought
the 20-year-old for £400,000 in January. Lewis made his debut for England at
Under-21 level this month.

A senior cap, naturally, is much more likely to come the way of Manchester
City's Joe Hart tomorrow. Nothing, all the same, can impair Lewis's good
humour. Asked to compare the England manager with the Peterborough director
of football, Barry Fry, he replied: "Capello's English is better." We may
not see him playing for England tomorrow but there is something encouraging
about the presence of little-known, and slightly impudent, figures in the
party.

New faces trained in the Caribbean sun yesterday, determined to turn up the
heat on England's closed shop. Dean Ashton heads a list of players ready to
break up the tried and trusted line-up that has failed for so long. There
are places up for grabs as Fabio Capello looks for winners and Ashton knows
tomorrow night's friendly represents a golden opportunity. With so many
established names back home and resting, he and others like Theo Walcott and
Gabriel Agbonlahor can't waste this moment. The West Ham striker said: "The
new players here feel there is a chance to help create another England team.
"This is an opportunity to take the places of some of the other players.
Everyone wants a winning England. We are constantly being told there are not
enough England players around – I beg to differ.
"There are some good ones and all we are asking is the opportunity to prove
ourselves." The established players know Ashton is right – and Steven
Gerrard agreed. He said: "This manager will be ruthless if you don't meet
his standards, play how he wants and fit into the system. If you can't
produce for him then it will be goodbye."
Coach Capello is on record as saying he wants to find the perfect foil for
Wayne Rooney – and Ashton believes he can emerge as that man for next
season's World Cup campaign. He added: "There is a place going for a lead
striker and, with Michael Owen not here, there is great competition among
the new faces. "This game represents a real chance to stake a claim. We just
need the chance. I like to think I can be the partner for Wayne. "I operate
for the team and the striker who plays with me can only benefit. I provide
as well as score. If I do play I can score goals and think I have proved
that." Capello strolled around on the training pitch, watching carefully and
talking to his staff. He gives off an aura of importance and no-one knows
what is going on in his head. Ashton said with a smile: "We get as much
chance of understanding what he is thinking as you do. What the manager has
shown is that it doesn't matter where you have been or what you have done in
the past, it is where you are now. "Those players in the Champions League
are obviously going to have a better chance. But, if I play well for my
club, I know I can show I am good enough. The squad has been broadened out
and it gives me great heart.
"Just to be here means he thinks highly of us all. He must see I am doing
well. Wayne Rooney is an unbelievable player and I know I can get in the
team as well. I have belief and was pleased with my 10 Premier League goals
when I got my form back during the season. I will always score goals."
What Ashton has to do is brush Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe aside in the
race to partner Rooney. Owen has missed this trip with a virus although
there is no indication yet Capello wants England's No.1 striker in his team.
Ashton is so happy to be back involved after his injury nightmare. He added:
"It has been two difficult years. There were a few doubters who didn't
think I would get back to where I was – so I'm pleased to be here. "No-one
thought I would be able to return to the level of performance – yet I always
knew I had the ability. I missed out on a whole season and I have a point to
prove. "I will be working as hard as anyone to get in. That FA Cup final
against Liverpool seems a long time ago now. I have shown with my goals in a
limited season that I am back to the player I was, perhaps even better, and
I certainly feel stronger mentally. "Nothing will stop me searching for my
goal – that is to get in this England team and take the chance when it
comes."

Liverpool and United to make shock move for Hammers defender? - Guardian

ANTON Ferdinand is being lined up for a shock move to either Liverpool or
Manchester United, according to reports this morning. West Ham have
reportedly put the 23-year-old defender up for sale as they look to trim the
wage bill at Upton Park. And that has alerted two of the Premier League's
'big four' teams. Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez could make a move for
Ferdinand after recently revealing his concern at the number of goals his
team conceded from set pieces last season, while there is also the
uncertainty at Anfield over the future of veteran Sami Hyypia. Premier
League champions United need a replacement for Spanish youngster Gerard
Pique, who moved back to Barcelona earlier this week, and could be tempted
to take Ferdinand to Old Trafford to link up with big brother, Rio.
Meanwhile, Spurs are also showing an interest in the former England U21
international - they had a bid knocked back by the Hammers in the past -
although the north Londoners look more intent on snapping up Manchester
City's Richard Dunne. Ferdinand is the longest serving member of the Hammers
squad, having made 163 appearances since making his debut in 2002. But, with
six senior centre-halves on the books and the emergence of promising
youngster James Tomkins towards the end of last term, Irons boss Alan
Curbishley may just feel that Ferdinand's time in east London has run its
course. It would take in the region of about £5 million to prise him away
from Upton Park.

Hammers told to cough up the cash to land Shorey - Guardian Series

WEST Ham have been told they will not get Reading's Nicky Shorey on the
cheap. The Irons have long been connected with a move for the Barking-born
left back and had a £4m offer for the 27-year-old turned down last summer.
But, despite Reading's releagtion to the Championship and the player making
it clear he wants to quit the club, Royals chief executive Nigel Howe
reckons it will still take a substantial offer to prise the England man away
from the Madjeski Stadium. "I like Nicky, but I am not going to give him
away," Howe told the Evening Post. "In theory he should still be a very
valuable player who is in the £4 million to £5 million bracket. "He hasn't
put in a transfer request but he has just made it clear he wants to go. "He
still has a year left on his contract and I hope for him that someone comes
in for him with a sensible offer because if not then I don't know what is
likely to happen. "But it is early days and I don't expect us to see any
action until July when everyone is back from their breaks."

West Ham United will play Columbus Crew in Ohio on 20 July before taking on
the MLS All-Stars in Toronto

West Ham United can confirm the club will be taking on Major League Soccer
side Columbus Crew in a pre-season friendly in the United States on Sunday
20 July.

The match, which will take place from 5pm local time at the 20,145-seater
Crew Stadium in Ohio, will be a high-profile fixture ahead of the
prestigious MLS All-Star Game in Toronto, Canada on Thursday 24 July.
Columbus have the joint-best record of any team in the United States top
flight to date in the 2008 season, having won six of their first nine games,
and are riding high in the Eastern Conference. They also advanced this week
in the national US Open Cup with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake.

West Ham United and United States defender Jonathan Spector is looking
forward to the challenge. He said: "It is really exciting news to hear we
are playing Columbus Crew as part of our pre-season tour. They are one of
the most highly supported teams in the MLS and were the first to have a
purpose built stadium to meet the demand of supporters. They have some
talented players, so it will be a challenging test for us as well."

Columbus, who play in yellow and black and were one of the MLS's inaugural
clubs when founded in 1994, are managed by Sigi Schmid. The club have
several leading names including highly-rated young United States midfielders
like Robbie Rogers and Eddie Gaven, both 21, along with veterans such as
75-times capped US defender Frankie Hejduk, who played against England this
week, and former Boca Juniors and Argentina striker Guillermo Barros
Schelotto. Crew President Mark McCullers said: "We are pleased once again to
bring the best soccer from across the globe right here to Columbus and to
provide the best competitive challenge for our team. The English Premier
League is arguably the best league in the world."

West Ham United are set to arrive in the United States on Friday 18 July,
with the Columbus fixture following two days later. The team will then head
direct to Toronto. In the high-profile MLS All-Star Game, the club will take
on a selection of Major League Soccer's best players. These will be chosen
from the 14 clubs, under the name of the MLS All-Stars and could potentially
feature LA Galaxy's David Beckham. The fixture will be played at BMO Field,
home of Toronto FC, and will see Alan Curbishley's team looking to achieve
what Celtic, Chelsea and Fulham have not managed in the past three seasons
and earn victory.

Dean Ashton has said he will continue to work hard in training to show what
he can bring to the England team ahead of the friendly against Trinidad and
Tobago on Sunday night.

The in-form striker was unlucky not to have got off the bench on Wednesday
night in the 2-0 win against the United States, but regardless is making the
most of the chance to be back on the international scene. "It has been great
to be involved in a squad with such great players and I think it is only
going to be good for me in the long run," said Ashton who was among the
unused substitutes at Wembley. "It is all experience whether I play or don't
play, but obviously it would be lovely to get some minutes this weekend."

Ashton added he has enjoyed the week's training and has particular reason to
be glad about being part of the England set-up again after twice being
called up before only to be ruled out because of injury. The striker broke
his ankle in August 2006 on the first day of training with Steve McClaren's
squad and then a knee injury prevented him from even joining up with the
national team in October last year. "I was glad to have got past the first
day in training, unlike the last time," he said with a smile. "But it was a
long time ago now and I was just pleased to be picked again. Hopefully I can
show I am worthy of some minutes on the pitch."

The 24-year-old is part of the new England set-up under Fabio Capello for
the first time and said the spirit is good. Personally, he still feels fresh
having finished off the Premier League season strongly for West Ham United,
notching his eleventh goal of the campaign in the final game against Aston
Villa. "I had a little break straight after the season finished, but it was
no problem getting back into training again and I have been pleased with how
it has gone. It is a really good set-up here, all the players are high
quality and the staff just wants the best from them, so it has been good."

Ashton also wished his club-mate Jonathan Spector well for his summer of
World Cup and Olympic action after the American defender had to miss
Wednesday's game because of a hip injury. He was ruled out earlier in the
week, which meant there was never going to be a chance of the two playing
against each other. "Jonathan has been struggling with a hip injury, so it
was a shame for him. I am sure he would have loved to have played at Wembley
and obviously it was the same for me."

Undeterred by that frustration, Ashton is looking ahead to the next fixture
against Trinidad and Tobago - the final England action of the 2007/08 season
- and will be working as hard as ever to try and grab his chance. He was
named in the traveling party by Capello today, with only seven of the squad
who were involved in the Champions League final spared the trip to the
Caribbean. "I would have loved to have got on [against the US], but I will
continue to work hard and it would be lovely to get on and play a part on
Sunday."

Bellamy comeback boosts Wales - WHUFC
Craig Bellamy is back playing again and John Toshack has spoken of his
delight at seeing his skipper again

Wales manager John Toshack has spoken of his satisfaction at having Craig
Bellamy back and predicts he will be flying when he resumes West Ham United
duties.

Bellamy played just under half-an-hour as a second-half substitute in
Reykjavik on Wednesday night for his first competitive action since early
February - having been bothered by a persistent abdominal problem during the
2007/08 campaign. Toshack's team - also featuring Bellamy's club-mate Jack
Collison on his debut - won 1-0 in Iceland through Ched Evans' goal to
continue their fine run of form. "That's six games unbeaten and we have used
another batch of youngsters," he said. "Ched did very well but I was so
pleased to see Craig back on the pitch.

"He has been a very unlucky boy with injuries and we have certainly missed
his Premier League quality. I just hope he now has one more game in him and
then goes away for a nice summer break, hopefully to return to pre-season
training at West Ham raring to go. We need him as much as they do." Bellamy,
who has now made 50 international appearances for his country, and Collison
will both hope to figure again when Wales go to Rotterdam for the final
friendly of the season against the Netherlands on Sunday night.

West Ham United's Dean Ashton was left kicking his heels on the bench last
night as a lacklustre England overcame an even more lacklustre USA at
Wembley. Ashton had been widely tipped to make his international debut
alongside Wayne Rooney in a new look England striker force. However England
manager Fabio Capello decided instead to go with former Hammer Jermain
Defoe, then replacements Peter Crouch and another former Hammer in Joe Cole.
United target Michael Bradley, who played in a defensive midfield role for
the States had the kind of game he would wish to forget as England ran out
2-0 winners. Elsewhere there was better news for West Ham United's Jack
Collison who made his full debut in Wales' 1-0 win in Iceland. The Hammers
reserve captain gave a good account of himself and was joined by Craig
Bellamy for the last half hour. Bellamy looked sharp during his brief cameo
- welcome news for all Hammers fans ahead of the new season. * The England

West Ham are understood to have asked to be kept informed of the status of
Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone. The Spurs midfielder has been tipped to be one
of a number of Martin Jol signings set to leave White Hart Lane this summer
as Juande Ramos looks to stamp his mark on the squad. According to reports,
the Hammers have registered their interest in the former Derby player by
asking to be kept up to date on his situation. Rumours of a firm bid are
thought to be wide of the mark. 21-year-old Huddlestone made his debut for
the Rams on the opening day of the 2003/04 season as a 16-year-old. He moved
to Tottenham two years later in a deal worth around £2.5 million. Three
months after making his debut for Tottenham, Huddlestone put pen to paper on
a four-year deal that would see him remain at White Hart Lane until 2011.
However that was before the sacking of Jol, and new boss Ramos is said to
have been unimpressed with the former England under 21 leading to United
registering their interest. Huddlestone was this morning named in the
England squad to face Trinidad & Tobago this weekend.

West Ham United are being linked with a move for Brescia's Polish teenager
Bartosz Salamon, according to Setanta Sports. The 17-year-old midfielder
made his first team debut for the Serie B outfit earlier this month in a 3-0
win over Modena, two days after his 17th birthday. Salamon has been linked
with a string of Europe's top clubs in recent months, including Spanish
giants Real Madrid. West Ham's interest is thought to have been raised by
Gianluca Nani, United's new technical director who officially begins work at
the club next Monday (2nd June). Salamon began his career in Poland with
local club Lech Poznan before moving to Italy last year.

Craig Bellamy is confident he can still hit peak fitness after winning his
50th cap for Wales. The 28-year-old appeared as a second-half substitute
during Wales' 1-0 success in Iceland on Wednesday to reach the notable
landmark. The run-out was only Bellamy's second appearance since the end of
October due to the West Ham United forward's ongoing injury problems. Now
back to fitness, Bellamy is optimistic that he can return to being a regular
fixture for both club and country over the coming seasons. "If I am honest
it does not matter which game the 50th cap came in, and in which minute,"
said Bellamy. "It is just an achievement to get there for any player and I
am no exception. "I would have liked it to happen a lot earlier in my
career, but the way it has been for me I am happy just to get there. To win
my 50th cap is a massive honour. "It has been a tough season, and not just
injury-wise because there has been other stuff as well. But I have worked as
hard as I have ever done to get fit again and I think that was evident
against Iceland. "I am 28 now and if I want to attack my career and have my
best couple of years still to come, I knew this injury problem could break
me, so I have been working extremely hard for this. "If I had taken it easy
I would not have come back at the level I want to be at, but that is not the
case and hopefully I will get the benefits in the future. "Important as my
50th cap was from an individual point of view, the main thing was that a lot
of players made their debuts in Iceland and that is very pleasing."

Nolberto Solano has distanced himself from a return to former club Boca
Juniors and dropped a hefty hint that he would like to remain in The Premier
League, even if he is not awash with interest from English clubs. Solano
signed for West Ham on deadline day last August but only penned a one-year
contract with a view to a 12-month extension. As has been the case with many
of Alan Curbishley's acquisitions, the Peru international has struggled to
establish himself at Upton Park for one reason or another, prompting
suggestions his stay will prove short-lived. He reputedly turned his back on
a move to the MLS earlier this year and could now do the same with Boca, who
recently opened the door on a move for The Hammers' midfielder. "If the
offer is too good, it is clear that I would be interested and would
sacrifice," he said. "My children live there (in England) and I want to be
near them, it is true I have no concrete offers, but for now it is not my
intention to return to South America."

Word coming out of East London is that West Ham manager Alan Curbishley
could be on the verge of what could be their biggest signing of the summer.
Apparently Curbs is in the process of trying to bring some Serie A class to
the squad by adding Fiorentina ace Adrian Mutu to an already-promising front
line.

Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu is on the verge of signing for West Ham in a
£16 million pound deal, after rejecting a new contract from Fiorentina last

Who knows if the word coming out of East London is sound, but if this deal
were to happen, it would be a massive signing for the Hammers. The
Fiorentina striker has scored 17 goals in 26 appearances for the club this
past season, and was instrumental in helping La Viola make the Champions

FABIO Capello has refused to confirm whether Dean Ashton will make his
England debut in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. The West Ham striker was
expected to make his full international bow in Wednesday evening's 2-0
friendly win over the United States at Wembley, only for the Italian to call
on Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch instead. The 24-year-old is now in line to
feature at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, but head coach Capello is remaining
tight-lipped over whether Ashton will start the game. "I don't know. We need
to wait because the trip is very long and the weather will be very warm," he
told the Echo. "We will decide when we are in Trinidad and Tobago."
Should Ashton earn his first England cap, he will be the first Hammers
frontman to pull on the Three Lions since Tony Cottee played in a Euro 1988
warm-up game against Hungary on April 27, 1988. But the £7.25m forward, who
featured for his country at Under-17, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level,
would surely have made his debut earlier had it not been for a pair of
unfortunate injuries. First, on August 15, 2006, a tackle from Chelsea's
Shaun Wright-Phillips in training shattered both his left ankle and his
dreams of lining up against Greece in Steve McClaren's first game in charge
at Old Trafford.
Then, on October 6 last year, Ashton strained his medial knee ligaments in a
Premier League defeat at Aston Villa, ruling him out of the crucial Euro
2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia. On Wednesday evening, Capello
made him wait even longer by leaving him on the substitutes' bench against
the Americans. However, with Wayne Rooney not travelling to the Caribbean,
Ashton could start up front alongside either Aston Villa's Gabriel
Agbonlahor or Arsenal teenager Theo Walcott. Seven of the nine players who
featured in the UEFA Champions League final did not travel with the squad on
Thursday, with only Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand and Chelsea full-back
Wayne Bridge making the trip. Alongside Ashton, Manchester City goalkeeper
Joe Hart is also expected to make his full debut, while former Iron Jermain
Defoe could also be involved again after impressing against the US.

anything. So I did not hesitate to come and see him to tell him what I

team because the results were good and that I had to wait. I knew I was not
part of his plans. So I had to cope with it until the end of the season. Two
months were remaining. "But it was two endless months. I continued to work

attention when I move to a club. I will take the precaution to speak with
the manager before I sign. "And most of all, I'll take my time before I sign
because, for West Ham, it happened at the very last moment. I have not had
the time to get closer to the manager. I wanted to move on. West Ham are a

Dean Ashton has played down his disappointment at not making his England
debut, insisting he is happy just to be part of the Fabio Capello
revolution.
The West Ham striker had been expected to play a role in last night's 2-0
win over the USA at Wembley but was forced to watch on as Jermain Defoe and
Wayne Rooney started the match. The never-ending warm-up: Dean Ashton spent
much of last night trotting up and down but never got on the pitch
Peter Crouch and Joe Cole came on as late attacking substitutions, but
Ashton claims he is delighted to be considered after overcoming a season
blighted by injury at Upton Park. He said: "I'm pleased to be in the squad.
Of course I would have loved to have got on, but I wouldn't say I'm bitterly
disappointed not to have done. This is my first squad back. "You can't
expect to be playing straight away in a team like this."
Ashton, 24, will continue talks this week with a view to securing his future
at West Ham. Newcastle were keen to sign the striker but the Hammers are
close to tying up Ashton to a five-year contract.

WEST Ham youngsters Freddie Sears and James Tomkins played their part as
England moved to within a point of reaching this summer's U19 European
Championship finals with a 1-0 win over Serbia last night. Reading's James
Henry grabbed the only goal of the game against a strong opponent. It was
the Young Lions' second victory in the four-team Elite Qualifying campaign
in Borisov, Belarus. Sears scored both goals in the 2-0 over Poland in the
first game on Monday, while the team have yet to concede thanks in part to
Irons centre back Tomkins. Brian Eastick's side finish their campaign
against mini-tournament hosts Belarus in Minsk on Saturday. They need just a
point to top the group and secure their place in the eight-team finals
tournament in the Czech Republic in July.

Brescia midfielder Bartosz Salamon is the latest player to be linked with a
summer switch to West Ham. The Polish youngster is known to Hammers
technical director Gianluca Nani and could be the subject of an ambitious
raid on the Italian side. After leaving Lech Poznan to learn his trade in
Italy, the 17-year-old has already broken into the Brescia first team. Real
Madrid have previously been credited with an interest in Salamon but Nani
could steal a march on any other suitors as the talent-spotter was
previously employed at Brescia, where he helped find the likes of Roberto
Baggio and Andrea Pirlo.
West Ham boss Alan Curbishley has yet to make any concrete moves in the
market as the East Londoners make tying down Dean Ashton to a new contract
their priority, but the signs are that they have been casting their net far
and wide for fresh blood.

Steven Davis is a target for four Premiership clubs who are ready to offer
him big money to turn his back on Rangers. Kevin Keegan's Newcastle have
joined the chase for the Fulham midfielder, while Sportsmail understands
West Ham could make a £30,000-per-week pitch for the Northern Ireland
international. Blackburn and Middlesbrough are already in the race, although
the player himself remains tempted by the thought of making a permanent
switch to Ibrox. A boyhood Rangers fan, Davis is hurting badly after SPL
title-race heartache and may fancy the chance to make amends - if the right
deal can be struck. Walter Smith confirmed after the Scottish Cup Final that
he wants to sign 23-year-old Davis, who impressed so much on loan since
January, even though Fulham are liable to ask in excess of £3million. Daniel
Cousin could be used as a makeweight in any move, with his agent Willie
McKay adamant yesterday that the Gabon striker will move on in the summer.
Newcastle boss Keegan came to Ibrox twice during the UEFA Cup run and,
while Carlos Cuellar was a primary target, he is believed to also have been
smitten by Davis, who scored against Werder Bremen in a 2-0 win. The danger
for Rangers is that Fulham become tempted by so much Premiership interest
they start an auction for the player which would price the Ibrox side out of
the bidding. Smith, speaking in general terms, said yesterday: "It is
difficult. If you go for some top players and then English clubs come in,
then you have no chance, really."
Meantime, Old Firm signing target Kyle Lafferty yesterday insisted he has
had enough of life at Owen Coyle's Burnley and desperately wants a move.
Without any Premiership experience to justify the £5m asking price being
spoken about by Coyle and Burnley, the 20-year- old said: "I have given my
all to Burnley but don't feel wanted. I understand Wolves and Rangers want
to sign me. I would be thrilled to move to either club. "I've heard Celtic
will also be making a bid, but I don't think that move will ever
materialise. I have enjoyed my time at Burnley but I now feel it's time for
me to move on. And I need a fresh challenge at this stage of my career. "I
was happy under previous manager Steve Cotterill. Things have changed though
and, to be honest, I don't feel the same way. "If I had been given the
opportunity to leave during the last two transfer windows I would have
left."
Lafferty has watched countryman Davis impress at Ibrox and added: "It would
be a dream to follow in his footsteps to Rangers and play for a club I've
supported since I was a boy."It is also an honour to be linked to a club
with the proud history and stature of Celtic. I just hope Burnley can come
to some sort of financial agreement." But Coyle said: "I have spoken to Kyle
and he reiterated he is happy working at Burnley. I think he feels if there
are clubs out there then he wants a move - but nobody has met our valuation.
He's probably gone about it in a misguided way but I still like the kid. We
won't fall out over it."

Hammers keep faith in homegrown talent - Guardian Series

WEST Ham topped the table for fielding the most Englishmen in a Premier
League season, according to a report. The Irons had on average 6.61
homegrown players in every starting line-up during the last campaign. Aston
Villa (6.42) were the only other club to average more than six English
starters, while Middlesbrough were third with 5.26. Perhaps unsurprisingly,
Arsenal fielded the least English players - just 0.34 - which was way short
of Liverpool (2.34) and Fulham (2.42). Premier League champions Manchester
United were ninth in the list with an average of 4.28. The report was just
one of two compiled by the BBC; the other highlighting that the number of
England-qualified players starting in the Premier League dropped to an
all-time low last season. Only 170 of the 498 players who started matches in
the top flight in 2007-08 were English - just 34.1 per cent of the total.
That was almost four per cent lower than in 2006-7. Yet, despite showing the
most faith in English talent, West Ham currently has just one representative
in the England national team - striker Dean Ashton, who is expected to make
his debut in Sunday's friendly match with Trinidad and Tobago.

The 27-year-old West Ham forward has been plagued with groin and stomach
trouble following his £7.5 million switch from Liverpool last summer, which
restricted him to just seven starts for the Irons last term. His last
appearance came as a 68th minute substitute against Wigan in February. But
he made a positive stride towards full fitness by winning his 50th cap last
night, and is set to continue his bid for full fitness by leading out his
country in the high-profile friendly with the Netherlands in Rotterdam on
Sunday. And, although it was teenager Ched Evans who stole the headlines by
bagging the winner on his debut, it was Bellamy's brief appearance that most
pleased Wales boss John Toshack. "Ched did very well but I was so pleased to
see Craig back on the pitch," said Toshack. "He has been a very unlucky boy
with injuries and we have certainly missed his Premier League quality. "I
just hope he now has one more game in him and then goes away for a nice
summer break, hopefully to return to pre-season training at West Ham raring
to go. We need him as much as they do."
Meanwhile, the game in Iceland marked another step forward in the budding
career of Hammers youngster Jack Collison. The 19-year-old midfielder was

Dean Ashton will have to wait a little longer for his long-awaited England
debut after being an unused substitute in the 2-0 friendly win against the
United States at Wembley on Wednesday night.

The West Ham United striker, who scored five goals in eight matches to end
the Premier League campaign, will hope to figure when Fabio Capello takes
his side to Trinidad and Tobago for the last friendly of the 2007/08 season
on Sunday. Ashton has twice been in England squads before - a friendly
against Greece in August 2006 and then for European Championship qualifiers
against Estonia and Russia last October - only for injury to end his chances
on both occasions.

Many neutral observers had expected Ashton to start at Wembley in a game
played in front of 71, 233 fans but the role of Wayne Rooney's partner went
to Jermain Defoe. The West Ham United academy product, now at Portsmouth,
was eventually replaced in the second half by Peter Crouch before Rooney
himself departed with 12 minutes to play for Joe Cole. England's goals on
the night came from John Terry in the 38th minute, from David Beckham's
free-kick, before Steven Gerrard finished off a superb pass by Gareth Barry

Jack Collison has become the fourth full Welsh international at West Ham
United after winning his first cap in the 1-0 win away to Iceland on
Wednesday night as Craig Bellamy made a long-awaited return.

Collison, still only 19, was named in John Toshack's starting lineup to
complete a memorable campaign for club and country. First, he played a full
part in Alan Curbishley's pre-season plans last summer before being
appointed captain of Kevin Keen's reserves. After promising form, he earned
the first of five Wales Under-21 caps and then made his first team debut
away to Arsenal on New Year's Day. He got his first start at Bolton
Wanderers in April before his latest step forward.

Collison, who joins club-mates Danny Gabbidon, James Collins and Bellamy as
members of the Wales senior set-up, turned in a lively 60-minute display
including some decent efforts on goal before being replaced by fellow
Under-21 prospect Owen Tudor Jones. By then, Toshack's team were winning
thanks to a sublime backheeled goal from Ched Evans just before half-time.
Evans had entered the fray just three minutes before as a replacement for
former West Ham United midfielder Carl Fletcher, who was captaining the team
in Reykjavik.

Usual Wales skipper Bellamy, meanwhile, made his long-awaited playing return
for the first time since getting 22 minutes as a substitute away to Wigan
Athletic on 2 February. Bellamy is returning to fitness after an abdominal

which included some good late runs that tormented the home defence, has

England need just a point from their final qualifier to make sure of a place
at the 2008 European U19 Championship after a 1-0 win against Serbia in
Borisov on Wednesday afternoon.

A solitary second-half strike from Reading midfielder James Henry made it
two wins from two after a Freddie Sears double on Monday had ensured a 2-0
victory against Poland. England finish their campaign on Saturday against
mini-tournament hosts Belarus, and the home nation's 1-0 defeat of Poland
later on Wednesday still means they could finish ahead of England on the
head to head rule with a victory in Minsk. A point will be good enough for
the Young Lions, who have yet to concede a goal thanks in large part to the
defensive form of James Tomkins.

Were England to lose their final game, Serbia could also finish with six
points like Brian Eastick's side and Belarus and the final group standings
would come down to head to head results between all three teams. The winners
of the section will ultimately take their place in the July finals in the
Czech Republic alongside the hosts, holders Spain, Germany, Hungary,
Bulgaria and two other nations to be determined later this week.

Freddie Sears and James Tomkins were both involved as England's under 19s
won their second game inside three days. The United duo both played 90
minutes as Brian Eastick's side overcame a tough Serbian side 1-0 in Minsk,
to follow on from their 2-0 success oveer Poland on Monday. The game was won
by a second half effort by Reading's James Henry, meaning that a win for
England against hosts Belarus on Saturday afternoon will ensure they qualify
for the European U19 Championships, to be held in the Czech Republic.

Bellamy on comeback trail - KUMB

Craig Bellamy is set to win his 50th cap for Wales tonight as he continues
his rehabilitation. The United striker made just nine appearances for the
Hammers last season after signing from Liverpool in a £7.5m deal, due to a
string of injuries. But the 27-year-old former Coventry striker has been
finding his feet again recently. Ahead of the FA Cup Final he trained
extensively with beaten finalists Cardiff whilst more recently he has been
working out in the Vale of Glamorgan alongside a club physio who has been
monitoring his progress. Bellamy could be partnered by fellow Hammer Jack
Collison tonight when the Welsh face Iceland in Reykjavik. Welsh boss John
Toshack has promised to experiment with his side which could be good news
for the young Hammer.

Crew to be confirmed? - KUMB

West Ham are set to announce their second North American fixture imminently,
according to reports. The Hammers are touring North America at the end of
July in preparation for the 2008/09 Premier League season, and it is
expected that the club will add a second date to the already-confirmed clash
with the MLS AllStars on July 24th. That opponent is tipped to be Columbus
Crew, who are based in Ohio. The Crew, who are members of the MLS play their
home games at the Columbus Crew Stadium, which has a capacity of 22,500.
Columbus feature just one English player in their squad, 23-year-old
defender Andy Iro who moved to the US in his teens. They are currently
second in the Eastern Standings behind leaders Chigaco Fire.

A second round of talks between West Ham and Dean Ashton have ended without
a deal being struck. However the club remain confident that a deal will be
done soon, with CEO Scott Duxbury telling the club's website: "The talks so
far have been very positive. "We are meeting with Dean and his
representatives in the early part of next week with the aim of concluding a
new long-term contract." The two parties met initally on May 16th. Meanwhile
rumours that Ashton is set to leave for pastures new continue to surface -
no doubt due to the current impasse.

West Ham are being linked with a move for American international Michael
Bradley. The midfielder, currently based in Holland with Heerenveen is said
to be interesting a number of Premier League clubs including the Hammers. He
is set to feature for the USA tonight when they take on England at Wembley.
Bradley, 20, began his professional career with the MetroStars (now known as
the New York Red Bulls) in 2004. A year later he became the youngest MLS
player to be transferred to a European team when he was snapped up by
Heerenveen for an undisclosed fee. His first year in the Dutch league
proved to be an enormous success; Bradley went on to score nearly 20 goals
from the centre of the park. Rated at around £4m, Bradley is said to be
interesting the likes of Middlesbrough and Blackburn along with the Hammers.

international since October with as much relief as joy in Iceland. The
injury-jinxed West Ham striker appeared for the final 28 minutes of the
impressive 1-0 friendly win in Reykjavik on Wednesday night, earning his
50th cap. Bellamy now seems certain to be back leading his country in a much
more difficult game in Rotterdam against Euro 2008-bound Holland on Sunday.
Bellamy last played senior football for a mere 20 minutes as a substitute
for the Hammers at Wigan in February. But he had been troubled with groin
problems since Wales' win in San Marino last October. A stomach operation
followed and Bellamy's season was all but ended, until last night's run-out
in Iceland. With stand-in skipper Carl Fletcher on his way home after
suffering ankle ligament damage against Iceland - and with Simon Davies out
of the trip with ankle problems - Bellamy's final game of the season will be
leading his country against the Dutch. Teenager Ched Evans bagged the winner

But it was Bellamy's appearance that delighted Toshack just as much as
Evans' scoring debut. Toshack said: "That's six games unbeaten and we have
used another batch of youngsters. Ched did very well but I was so pleased to
see Craig back on the pitch. "He has been a very unlucky boy with injuries
and we have certainly missed his Premier League quality. "I just hope he now
has one more game in him and then goes away for a nice summer break,

WEST Ham are reportedly keeping tabs on Rangers star Daniel Cousin as they
seek to boost their forward options for next season. The Gabon
international's agent claims that the player is ready to quit Ibrox and is
attracting the interest of a "number of Premier League clubs". Fulham are
certain to rekindle their interest in the 31-year-old after being denied
that chance in January. Then, FIFA blocked the move because the player had
already represented two clubs, Lens and Rangers, in the same season and
could not play for a third. Newcastle are also said to be keen to secure
Cousin's services. And the powerful frontman's agent Willie McKay revealed
that his client would love a dream move south of the border. "I would expect
Daniel to leave Rangers this summer and he is still very interested in a
move to England," McKay told skysports. "He was disappointed when the move
to Fulham in January was blocked, but he showed what a real professional he
was by returning to Rangers and scoring a few important goals for them. "He
