West Ham United will continue it support for equality projects throughout
2013

West Ham United will be continuing to support programmes that promote
tolerance and inclusion in 2013 by marking a number of key equality dates
throughout the year. The club remains committed to tackling discrimination
in whatever form it takes and will be promoting events and campaigns that
highlight and combat prejudice towards individuals because of disability,
race, sex, sexual orientation and religion. The first high-profile event the
club will be supporting is the annual Holocaust Memorial Day, which will be
marked at the Queen's Park Rangers fixture on Saturday 19 January. The club
will also be sending representatives to the local events in remembrance of
the estimated eleven million people who were killed by the Nazis in the
Second World War. This included six million Jews, one and half million of
whom were children, as well as gypsies, the mentally ill, homosexuals,
religious dissidents and other minorities. The aim for this year's Holocaust
Memorial Day events are to 'build a bridge' between communities, which ties
in perfectly with West Ham United's commitment to equality, social inclusion
and community cohesion. The Hammers won praise last season for their work
with the newly-launched Football v Homophobia campaign, as they became only
the second football team to wear the organisation's T-shirts. That support
will continue during FvH's awareness week this year, which ties in with the
annual Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender Month in February.

West Ham will then once again celebrate International Women's Day on 8
March, where the club will carry on its support for initiatives that promote
gender equality throughout football. Likewise, the club will be marking
Black History Month, which takes place in October. West Ham prides itself on
being a place that welcomes supporters from all faiths and the club will be
working with local inter-faith projects that help contribute to greater
understanding of different beliefs during Inter-Faith Week in November. The
Hammers also has a thriving Disabled Supporters' group and recently hosted a
hugely successful Disabled Supporters' Forum, which was attended by Sam
Allardyce, Guy Demel and Robert Hall. The International Day of Disabled
People falls on 3 December and the club will be consulting with its disabled
members on the Supporter Advisory Board to help promote the issues that
affect disabled fans.

Joint Chairman David Sullivan said: "Both David Gold and I feel it is hugely
important that we continue our great work from 2012 that highlights
discrimination in society today. We supported a number of key initiatives
last year, which we will be looking to build on throughout 2013. "We both
firmly believe that West Ham United is a club that promotes fairness and
inclusion across the board and we want the Boleyn Ground to continue to be a
place that people from all backgrounds feel welcome. "I would like as many
fans as possible to join us in this work and we would love to hear from any
of you that have suggestions or ideas for any other projects or campaigns
that you would like to see West Ham United supporting. "Our tagline of
'Moore than a Football Club' has become well known throughout football this
season and we want to carry on demonstrating to the rest of the world why
West Ham United is exactly that."

The Joint-Chairman's comments follow the positive reaction to the club's
response to the unsavoury reports from the Premier League game with
Tottenham Hotspur on 25 November. Kick It Out Chairman Lord Herman Ouseley
said: "Clubs have the power to show leadership and set an example for the
vast majority of its supporters to follow in instances like this. Here, West
Ham have done exactly that. "Kick It Out has seen first-hand the appetite
the club has in embracing anti-discrimination initiatives, with David Gold
and James Tomkins both acting as campaign ambassadors in 2012. By doing this
they're helping to send a message as to what is and what isn't acceptable.
"It is clear they feel abuse of this kind won't be tolerated and, in a
period where the issue is high on the agenda, this approach is something we
applaud."

James Collins had mixed emotions after his two goals so nearly earned a win
against Manchester United

James Collins' brace so nearly earned West Ham United a famous FA Cup
third-round victory against Manchester United at the Boleyn Ground on
Saturday.
As it is, the Hammers had to settle for a highly-creditable 2-2 draw with
the eleven-times winners and players and fans alike can look forward to an
Old Trafford replay in ten days' time. Central defender Collins glanced in
two superb headers from Joe Cole crosses either side of half-time to strike
out Tom Cleverley's opener and the hosts looked on course for a brilliant
cup victory in east London before Robin van Persie's late leveller. "I'm
delighted to get the two goals but ultimately disappointed we didn't win the
game," Collins said. "You know you're going to get quality delivery [from
Joe Cole]. They're both from a set-play, the balls gone out and then come
back in so you've just go to try and make the run and the ball's there. I
didn't need to move too much and the ball just landed on my head. "I've seen
their goal on the replay in the changing room and sometimes you've just got
to hold your hands up. It was an unbelievable ball and the touch and finish
was top drawer. "We are happy with the way played. Their goal at the end has
put a bit of a dampener on it but if you look at the performance and the
team they put out I think we'll sit down on Monday and probably be really
happy. We had a chance to make it 3-1 which would have probably killed it
but we take massive plusses out of the performance."

Collins was voted Man of the Match by match sponsors Sure Men for his
efforts as he was back to his customary best after missing the New Year's
Day win at home to Norwich City through suspension. The performance was
particularly pleasing for the Wales international after his mistake cost the
Hammers dear in the 1-0 defeat at Reading. "The Reading game was the
ultimate disappointment. I've done it twice now this season and I don't
think I've done it once before in my career. It would have been nice if this
game was in the league so I can rectify it. Those things happen in football,
though, I've just got to put it behind me and get on with it."

The 2-2 draw sets up a mouthwatering replay in Manchester, which will take
place at 8pm on Wednesday 16 January. West Ham are likely to be allocated a
large section of the ground and the travelling claret and blue army will
head to the north west hoping for a repeat of the famous 1-0 FA Cup
fourth-round win at Old Trafford back in 2001. "I'm sure both managers might
say it's a game they could've done without with the heavy league fixture.
But we'll go there and try our best. We went there in the league and were
disappointed to lose in the end. We'll go there with confidence having
played them twice now and done very well each time. It's the FA Cup so we'll
hope we can cause an upset."

Collins is also happy to see that car parking spaces at West Ham's Chadwell
Heath training complex are getting harder to come by as more bodies return
from injury or are added to the squad. New signing Joe Cole made an
immediate impact against the Red Devils and 'Ginge' has backed loanee
Marouane Chamakh to follow suit, possibly in the Hammers' next game - away
at Sunderland next Saturday. "Chadwell Heath is getting busier. Chamakh has
been at Arsenal and Bordeux before, where he's done well. If he can come
here and we can get the best out of him that's a plus and with Joe's
performance against United to look at we're only going to get better. It's
great to have bodies about as we had a couple of injuries a few weeks ago
and it didn't seem like we'd have anyone about so it's great."

Sam Allardyce praised his players following their 2-2 FA Cup third-round
draw with Manchester United

Sam Allardyce was brimming with pride after his West Ham United side held
Manchester United to a thrilling 2-2 FA Cup with Budweiser third-round draw
with Manchester United. The Hammers recovered from falling behind to a Tom
Cleverley goal to go ahead through two James Collins headers - both assisted
by the returning Joe Cole - only for Robin van Persie's added-time finish to
deny them a famous victory. From a tactical point of view, West Ham were
magnificent, restricting the Barclays Premier League leaders to a handful of
chances. At the other end, Carlton Cole was denied a possibly
match-clinching third by David De Gea before Van Persie's dramatic late
intervention. "I thought we grew into the game really well," said Big Sam.
"We saw Manchester United moving the ball around in the early stages and
were tactically aware of the need not to get frustrated because they are a
good passing side and they rotate positions very well. We started to probe
and get on the front foot a little bit and started to get into their half
and get our wide men and full-back in down the side. "We started to create
chances and certainly our best chance, which was headed off the line [by
Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic from Alou Diarra's header] and we were
unlucky not to go 1-0 up. They then scored a fantastic goal with their
movement and one-touch football and a great finish at the end of it. "Then
we came storming back with a really quality ball from Joe Cole and a great
header from Ginge. It was unlikely enough that he would score once, but then
he scored a second for us and got us in front. We kept United extremely
quiet and then Matt Taylor headed back from Mark Noble from a great cross
from Matt Jarvis and Coley just couldn't toe-poke it in. "Ryan Giggs then
smashes a half-volley diagonal about 65 yards and Van Persie peels off James
Tomkins, his first touch is in front of him and bang, it's in the back of
the net. It was a sickener but it was a great performance from the lads and
it's a real shame they didn't get us through at the first time of asking.
"We're still in the draw after a fantastic performance on the back of a very
good win over Norwich. I hope our bad run is now over and, if we continue to
keep performances like this going, we will continue to get results."

Big Sam was rightly delighted with the display of Joe Cole, who created both
West Ham goals and produced a performance full of the class and talent
Hammers fans came to know and love during his first spell in claret and
blue. "He is a top international player for England and he played for the
top team in the country at Chelsea. He had a move that went wrong to
Liverpool so you could relate it to Steven Pienaar, who went from Everton to
Tottenham and it didn't work, then he has gone back and it's gone well. "Joe
is still in his early thirties and, as long as he stays fit for me - we'll
work hard at doing that - then he will be a great asset."

It was not only the No26 who impressed. Every West Ham player was
'outstanding', according to the manager. "Everybody was outstanding - the
only one who wasn't was Jussi because he didn't have anything to do. What
does that say about the performance? If he had saved Van Persie's shot he'd
have been the hero because I think we'd have won the game. "How many saves
did he have to make? We have limited Manchester United to the fewest chances
they've probably created in a game this season. I know people will say they
scored two but they did so with probably the only three chances they've had.
"They had a header at the far post [from Giggs] that went over which was a
reasonable chance, but at the other end we opened them up and exposed them
on several occasions, so it's just a shame we didn't get the win."

A replay means West Ham now have mid-week games in the three final weeks of
January - at Manchester United, Arsenal and Fulham. Big Sam said the fixture
pile-up will test a squad that has been strengthened by the arrival of Cole
and Marouane Chamakh and the return to fitness of a number of important
players.
"January is going to be massive in terms of the number of games and that
means we have got to get Diame and Carroll fit and Gary O'Neil back. I think
we'll strengthen the squad - we have Chamakh who has come in - and that will
be massive for us. "We've seen the effect of Collison and Vaz Te coming back
and the competition for places making people produce good performances.
"We've seen Danny Potts come back from Colchester and put in a massive
performance here against Manchester United, so I hope he can keep that up.
If I can get another player in during the window, so be it, and hopefully
that will give us the strength in depth to rotate during that period because
that's what I'll have to do to get some results."

Finally, the manager is looking forward to helping Chamakh return to the
form that made him a feared striker during a successful, league
title-winning spell with French club Bordeaux. "Modibo Maiga has gone to the
Africa Cup of Nations and Yossi Benayoun has gone back to Chelsea, so the
two new players have come in and replaced them. If we can add anybody else
then that will be fine. "We've got Andy, Carlton and Chamakh - three good
strikers. Hopefully we can give him a lift after the disappointment he had
to suffer at Arsenal in the last year or so. What he did at Bordeaux is what
I'm going to try to get him to do here. He was an outstanding centre forward
with Bordeaux who won the French league there."

The FA Youth Cup game with Tottenham Hotspur has been confirmed for Tuesday
22 January

West Ham United's fourth round FA Youth Cup game with Tottenham Hotspur has
been confirmed for 7pm on Tuesday 22 January at the Boleyn Ground. Steve
Potts' youngsters will play host to their north London neighbours on what
will surely be a special night under the Boleyn Ground lights. Tickets will
cost just £3 for adults and £1 for concessions and the club hope a bumper
crowd will be in full voice to cheer on the youngsters. The club shops will
also be staying open late so any fans hoping to stock up on Hammers
merchandise ahead of the game can pop instore.

Robin van Persie scored in stoppage time as Manchester United remained in
the FA Cup by the skin of their teeth and denied West Ham a famous win. Tom
Cleverley gave the visitors the lead when he sidefooted in before James
Collins headed the equaliser, his first goal since returning to the
club.Collins gave the Hammers the lead with another header after the break.
With seconds remaining, Van Persie latched on to Ryan Giggs's through-ball
to earn the visitors a replay. Although the Premier League leaders left it
very late, there was something inevitable about the final act given the
visitors' reputation for recovering the most unpromising of situations. It
was, however, heartbreaking for West Ham, who few would have said did not
deserve their place in the fourth round following a mature performance. Both
sides fielded strong line-ups, while the visitors also named an impressive
bench that included Rio Ferdinand, Antonio Valencia, Ryan Giggs, Ashley
Young and Van Persie.

Welbeck took the Dutchman's place in the starting XI and his pace was a
worry in the opening 45 minutes, but it was the speed of thought of strike
partner Hernandez that led to the opening goal for United. The Mexican has
scored three in the last three, but was provider on this occasion when he
darted down the right and delivered a pacey ball into the area for
midfielder Cleverley, who opened his body up and guided a firm strike past
Jussi Jaaskelainen. His goal delighted the travelling fans and was warmly
applauded by match attendee and ex-Old Trafford favourite David Beckham, to
whom the goalscorer has been likened.

In the last three competitive meetings between West Ham and Manchester
United at Upton Park, four different Hammers players have scored a brace

a delightful ball from the left that was powered in by the centre-back off

Cleverley should have at least hit the target instead of thrashing over when
the ball came to him at the edge of the area.

Although the tactics seemed set right, Ferguson's defenders appeared to
allow Cole more room than should have been afforded as the game went on.
Coming up to the hour, Cole was again allowed space to deliver. And on
almost the same spot from which he had supplied the cross for West Ham's
first goal, he found his partner-in-crime Collins, whose flicked header was
beautifully directed into the corner. Ferguson threw on the bigger guns -
Van Persie and midfielder Antonio Valencia - to try to remain in a
competition his side last won in 2004. As four minutes of stoppage time were
announced, the Hammers must have entertained the thought they had the
11-time winners beaten, but Van Persie changed all that as he brilliantly
controlled Giggs's lofted ball and rifled in.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he feared missed chances had
consigned his side to an early FA Cup exit at West Ham. The Premier League
leaders were 2-1 down after 90 minutes, but earned a third-round replay when
Robin van Persie levelled in stoppage time. "We have had some terrible draws
over the years and been knocked out early and we don't enjoy that," he said.
"We missed some good chances and I thought it wasn't going to be our day."
He continued: "We had headers over the bar and [Shinji] Kagawa had one
blocked on the line. "But you have to say the pass from Ryan Giggs, and the
first touch from Robin and his finish were world class," added the
71-year-old Scot. Giggs was one of three substitutes, along with Van Persie
and Antonio Valencia, introduced after James Collins had scored his second
header to put the home side in front. Midfielder Tom Cleverley had given the
visitors the lead in the first half, when he guided in Javier Hernandez's
cross from the right. Collins equalised a few minutes later with a header
from Joe Cole's cross. The two combined again when Cole, making his first
appearance in his second spell at Upton Park, delivered another excellent
cross that Collins flicked in. "For us to be losing 2-1 in that game is
amazing with the way we played," said Ferguson. "But when you play West Ham
you have got to defend those crosses and set pieces, because they are
brilliant at that, the best team in the league, but we did not do that.
"Twice in the same position, [it was] James Collins from a cross by Joe Cole
and we have lost two goals. But with some of the chances we missed, we
should have been home safely."

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce said he knew from experience his opponents are
never beaten while the game is still in play. "You have never beaten
Manchester United until the final whistle blows and I have learned that in
the past," said the former Bolton manager. "It was a great performance and
in that dressing room we almost feel like we have lost when you get done in
the last minute, but we are still in the hat. "We have a difficult January
now. That game gets fitted in, and we have some important league games
before and after that, so we have to get the players fit who are out
injured."

....well nothing actually.

Win lose or draw, most clubs manage to send their manager or an assistant
along to the press room after matches to discuss the game. However, it seems
yet again Manchester United see themselves above such things.

Now we weren't particularly interested in what Ferguson had to say - let's
face it he talks a load of rubbish at the best of times. However, the press
room would have appreciated a quick word to the effect that they couldn't be
bothered slightly earlier in proceedings.

Some of you might think that such actions are typical of an arrogant club
with no class.

We could not possibly comment.

West Ham to sign Brazilian striker on loan

West Ham are set to sign Brazillian striker Wellington Paulista on loan for
the remainder fo the season, according to reports. The 29-year-old Cruzeiro
striker is said to be on his way to London to join the Hammers for the
remainder of the 2012/13 campaign according to Cruzeiro director of football
Alexandre Mattos.
"Cruzeiro would like to thank Wellington a lot, he is a great professional,"
said Mattos. "He always honoured and liked Cruzeiro a lot, as Cruzeiro liked
him also. The clubs doors are always open for him."

Paulista has been with Cruzeiro since 2009, having moved to the Campeonato
Brasileiro Série A side from Botafogo where he was something of a cult hero
amongst fans.

A last-gasp equaliser from substitute Robin Van Persie secured the current
league leaders a second bite at the FA Cup cherry, despite being outmuscled
and outplayed for most of the game by United at the Boleyn Ground this
afternoon.

Twelve years ago this month Joe Cole was part of the Harry Redknapp team
that did the impossible and beat the then-reigning European Champions 1-0 at
Old Trafford in the FA Cup 4th Round through a second half Paolo Di Canio
goal.

And the returning hero, who was making his first appearance for United since
returning to the club from Liverpool last week was just moments away from
celebrating another shock Cup result - and one that he had a major role in.

Cole provided both assists for United's two goals, both of which were scored
by a second of West Ham's 'JC's - James Collins. It looked as if those two
strikes would be enough to win the game for Sam Allardyce's side - that was
until Van Persie's untimely intervention as the game entered added-on time.

Always a lively encounter, United were inches away from drawing first blood
when Alou Diarra, in for his first start since joining the club back in
August saw a 12th-minute header hacked off the line by Paul Scholes.

The visitors hit back quickly and Nemanja Vidic saw his header cleared from
under his own bar eight minutes later by young Danny Potts, back in the
first team for the first time since September. That proved to be a warning
that United failed to heed, for within three minutes Man U had taken the
lead.

With West Ham's attack having broken down, the Reds countered on the right
through Hernadez. The Mexican's cross found Tom Cleverley, who had been left
totally unmarked by Jack Collison, and the midfielder sidefooted the ball
into the net to make it 1-0.

However United were not to be outdone and were back on level terms within
five minutes. Ricardo Vaz Te, working the left flank provided a short pass
inside to Joe Cole. Cole's inswinging cross was met by a glancing header
from James Collins, who had pulled away from his marker, which the Welshman
guided into an empty net. 1-1, game on again.

It was to be another half-an-hour before the next goal arrived and, in
truth, it could have gone to either side. But it was to be United who
grabbed it - and it proved to be a carbon-copy of their first.

Joe Cole, who had teased and tormented Man U from the opening minute once
again created an opening on the left and sent over an inswinging cross.
James Collins, once more in an advanced position lost his marker again
before making a clinical connection that saw the ball fly into the top
corner of David de Gea's net.

As the game wore on the only surprise was that Man U's expected 'cavalry
charge' failed to arrive and West Ham were looking comfortable as the game
entered its closing stages. United could have wrapped the game up with two
minutes of normal time remaining when a Matt Jarvis cross eventually found
its way to Carlton Cole who just couldn't find the clinical touch required.

And as is so often the case, that miss proved to be fatal. As the game
entered the first of four added-on minutes, a long Ryan Giggs ball over the
top caught West Ham's (unusually advanced) defence off guard.

Robin Van Persie, who had been almost completely anonymous since entering
the fray midway through the second half took the ball down with his first
touch, made space for himself with a second and planted the ball beyond the
despairing dive of Jussi Jaaskelainen with his third to take the tie to a
replay.

United will no doubt feel hard done by, but Sam Allardyce's players - who
started the game without a string of first team regulars - can all be proud
of their efforts, even if the odds are firmly stacked against them now in
the replay.

That match is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 16th January (8pm kick
off); with up to 15,000 tickets available for travelling fans, it promises
to be another night to remember. Now to recapture that spirit of 2000...

A dramatic late Robin van Persie equaliser rescued Manchester United from FA
Cup elimination at West Ham United in a 2-2 draw. Joe Cole - who re-joined
West Ham from Liverpool on Friday - had looked set to inspire the Hammers to
victory in a fairytale second debut. The midfielder created both headed
goals for the excellent James Collins either side of half-time to cancel out
Tom Cleverley's opener. However, substitute Van Persie stepped off the bench
to score a wonderful equaliser in the last minute of injury time to set up a
replay at Old Trafford on 16th January. It had been a bright start by
Manchester United and the visitors thought they had gone ahead on 16 minutes
when Danny Welbeck swept home a low cross from Javier Hernandez but the
offside flag was up. On 23 minutes, Sir Alex Ferguson's side took the lead,
as another Hernandez cross was met by Cleverley and the midfielder swept the
ball home in acres of space at the back post. However, just four minutes
later, West Ham were level when Cole had the ball on the left and his
floated centre was met with a powerful header by centre-back Collins, which
left United goalkeeper David De Gea rooted to the spot. West Ham turned the
tie around on the hour mark, with Cole again the provider, as he delivered
another perfectly-weighted ball from the left which Collins met with a
header. With 23 minutes left, Ferguson had seen enough, making a double
change as Van Persie and Antonio Valencia replaced Hernandez and Paul
Scholes. On 77 minutes, new boy Cole was replaced by Matthew Taylor, leaving
to a standing ovation from the home support. It was the away fans, however,
who were cheering in the final minute as Van Persie broke into the right
side of the penalty area on to a stunning cross-field pass from fellow
substitute Ryan Giggs, beautifully controlled the ball, held off James
Tomkins and expertly drilled the ball into the far corner.

Brazilian striker Wellington Paulista is set to finalise a move to West Ham

Sky Sports understands that West Ham United have agreed a deal with Cruzeiro
for Brazilian striker Wellington Paulista. The 28-year-old is set to join
Sam Allardyce's side on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a
permanent deal. Paulista has scored 19 goals this season for Cruzeiro and
will add an extra striking option for Allardyce for the second half of the
campaign. Sky Sports understands that the player is due to arrive in England
on Sunday to undergo a medical ahead of finalising his move. Paulista does
not require a work permit to move to the Premier League as he has an EU
passport, so could figure immediately for the Hammers.

Sam Allardyce paid tribute to debutant Joe Cole and all of his 'outstanding'
players after West Ham United's draw with Manchester United in the FA Cup
third round. The Upton Park club came within seconds of eliminating their
Premier League rivals in London on Saturday evening after taking a 2-1 lead
into injury time. And after on Friday re-joining West Ham from Liverpool,
boyhood Hammer Cole had been one of the main architects, setting up two
James Collins headers to cancel out Tom Cleverley's opener. Robin van
Persie's wonderful injury-time equaliser ultimately forced a replay but
Allardyce was still full of praise for Cole and his team, as the manager
told West Ham's official website: "He is a top international player for
England and he played for the top team in the country at Chelsea. "He had a
move that went wrong to Liverpool so you could relate it to Steven Pienaar,
who went from Everton to Tottenham and it didn't work, then he has gone back
and it's gone well. "Joe is still in his early thirties and, as long as he
stays fit for me - we'll work hard at doing that - then he will be a great
asset." Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted his side were
not at their best and Allardyce had thought West Ham would be good value to
win after a quiet game for goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. "Everybody was
outstanding. The only one who wasn't was Jussi, because he didn't have
anything to do," said Allardyce. "What does that say about the performance?
If he had saved Van Persie's shot, he'd have been the hero, because I think
we'd have won the game."

Cruzeiro striker Wellington Paulista ready for loan move to West Ham

Cruzeiro striker Wellington Paulista has confirmed he is on his way to West
Ham United and is determined to make a success of his move to the Premier
League. Paulista is due to arrive in England on Sunday to undergo a medical
ahead of finalising a loan move to Upton Park, with the option of a
permanent arrangement. He will not require a work permit as he holds an EU
passport and the Brazilian is looking forward to the next chapter in his
career. "I have had two successful spells at Cruzeiro," Paulista told
Lancenet. "I thank the fans for their kindness during the time I was
honouring the blue shirt. "I am sure I am leaving via the front door and I
hope I can return in the future. "The transfer was good for everyone
involved, now I'll work hard to succeed in this new stage of my career."

Cruzeiro's director of football Alexandre Mattos wished Paulista well for
the future and paid tribute to the 28-year-old's time at the club. Mattos
told Terra: "Cruzeiro thanks Wellington, who is a great professional. He has
always honoured and liked Cruzeiro, just like Cruzeiro likes him. He leaves
with the club's doors open."

Joe Cole was denied a heroic return to West Ham by Manchester United's new
hero Robin van Persie. Twelve years since being part of the Hammers side
that won at Old Trafford in the fourth round, Cole looked to have inspired
West Ham to another famous FA Cup win. He produced two wonderful ­moments of
quality to set up both Hammers goals for defender James Collins and left the
field to a standing ovation with 12 ­minutes remaining. But Van Persie
stepped off the bench to score a stunning ­stoppage-time equaliser and
­underline his own growing status as United's latest hero. The goal was Van
Persie's 20th in all competitions since joining United from Arsenal. And it
was the third time the Dutchman had netted in stoppage time to change the
outcome of a game. The 29-year-old will be grateful to another United
substitute Ryan Giggs for the superb pass that set up his late, late
leveller, but the striker's first touch and finish were sublime.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "The pass from Ryan Giggs and the finish
from Van Persie were world-class. "It was a challenge for Van Persie to come
to a new club and repeat what he had done. But he is a full international
and he has brought maturity to our front-line. He's been tremendous." West
Ham boss Sam Allardyce said: "It was a fantastic debut from Joe and he got a
great reception from the fans. But the whole team played really well." Cole
added: "I didn't like all the fuss about me returning, I just wanted to get
out there and play again. It was nice to be involved, but it still feels
like a missed ­opportunity for us."
Up until Van Persie's goal, it seemed Cole had done enough to complete a
dream return to Upton Park, ­despite passing almost ­unnoticed for the first
26 minutes of his ­second West Ham debut. United dominated possession in the
early stages and, despite Paul Scholes heading off the line from Alou
Diarra, it was no surprise when the visitors took the lead.

Rafael played a wonderful pass to Javier Hernandez, who crossed for Tom
Cleverley to beat West Ham goalkeeper Jussi ­Jaaskelainen without breaking
his stride. Former United star David ­Beckham celebrated Cleverley's goal
with his sons from the Upton Park stands. Beckham's ­representatives
insisted his ­presence was no more than an evening out to watch United,
­despite the fact he is yet to make a decision on his playing future. Cole
had barely touched the ball up to that point, but the ­midfielder's first
meaningful contribution prompted West Ham's equaliser. Having cut inside
from the left, Cole produced a superb right-foot cross that Collins headed
powerfully past David De Gea. The home crowd erupted and Cole's West Ham
career was up and running again. Collins' ­equaliser lifted West Ham, but it
was Ferguson's team that went closest to regaining the lead ­before
half-time.

Danny Welbeck skipped his way into the area, but shot far too close to
Jaaskelainen instead of ­squaring the ball for the unmarked ­Hernandez.
Cleverley had a good chance to double his and United's tally just three
minutes after the break, but fired over after Rafael's attempted cross had
been diverted into his path by James Tomkins. It was the unlikely
Cole-Collins partnership that again proved to be deadly for West Ham, as
they went ahead in almost identical circumstances as their first goal. Cole
picked the ball up on the left, produced another superb right-footed cross
and Collins thundered his second header past De Gea. It was far too easy for
the ­Hammers and Ferguson will have been furious that his team fell for the
same trick twice. Ferguson ­responded by sending on Van Persie, along with
­Antonio Valencia. And his last roll of the dice was to replace ­defender
Chris Smalling with Giggs. Just as fourth official Kevin Friend showed there
would be four minutes of added time, Giggs played an incredible high angled
pass that picked out Van Persie and he took the ball down ­perfectly before
firing
home.

Introduction
• West Ham United host Manchester United in the standout tie of the FA Cup

• The Hammers go into the match on a high, having won their first game of
2013 against Norwich at the Boleyn Ground last time out. However, Manchester

• Sam Allardyce has pledged to play his strongest available team for the
visit of the Red Devils. In addition to the signing of Joe Cole, his options
will be widened by the return of Kevin Nolan and James Collins from
suspension.
• Joey O'Brien's hamstring strain is his only new concern after the defender
was forced off in the Norwich win. Should the Ireland international not
recover, Matt Taylor or Dan Potts, who was recalled from a loan at
Colchester United, could step in.
• Fatigue could be the only other factor that influences Big Sam's
selection, with a number of his squad not missing a game so far this season.
Should he wish to rest one or two players, the likes of Alou Diarra or
Jordan Spence earn a start.
• Modibo Maiga will definitely be missing after he travelled away to Mali
for the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in South Africa.
• Mo Diame and Andy Carroll are both near to a return to light training,
leaving only George McCartney as the only long-term absentee.

• Shinji Kagawa could start along with Tom Cleverley, and changes are
expected elsewhere.
• Wayne Rooney (knee) has been ruled out while Nani (hamstring) is still

Referee
• Saturday's match referee will be Martin Atkinson.

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has spoken to the media ahead of
Saturday's FA Cup with Budweiser third round tie with Manchester United. The
Hammers welcome the Barclays Premier League leaders to the Boleyn Ground for
a sell-out match that will also be screened live on ITV1. Big Sam also spoke
enthusiastically about the signing of England international Joe Cole, who
has completed his move back to east London in time to feature in Saturday's
tie.

Sam, can you start by talking about the deal to sign Joe Cole from
Liverpool?

BS - "It's a good deal for us. I think that somebody as talented as Joe and
as enthusiastic about playing football and not all about money, as most
transfers seem to be about today, is a pleasure to bring back to the club
and give the opportunity he is looking for. "I think we will give him that
and hopefully he will grasp it with both hands and produce some of the
outstanding ability and quality that we know he has. If we can extract the
best out of him again, then it will be a fantastic signing for us at West
Ham United. "It is somebody who is coming back home to where he started. He
realised his dreams here of becoming a footballer and all he talks about is
football, so it's great to have secured the deal and really great that he
chose us."

What does it say about West Ham United's ambitions to have signed a player
like Joe Cole?

BS - "It's nice to have a player who has played 56 times for England. He is
just into his thirties so iI hink there is still an awful lot of football
left in him. The Barclays Premier League is where it's all at but he hasn't
been playing regularly enough since his move to Liverpool. "It has
frustrated him and he feels he needs a break somewhere else to recreate
himself and I think we have the back-up services and staff behind the scenes
here to help him to do that. I think, for us, it's a great move and
hopefully it is for him. "As long as it all gets done today, he'll be in the
starting line-up on Saturday."

What sort of impact can he make and how quickly?

BS - "I hope he does for us tomorrow what he did for Liverpool when he
played against us in Devember and that is score a goal. It'll be a tough
game for us [against Manchester United] but extra quality in a team when it
had possession is important and we know that Joe's main strengths lie in
possession and his ability to open teams up and beat individuals. "Those are
key elements and that's what we'll be looking for - give him the ball as
much as we can in the opposition half and say 'Go and create for us and go
and score some goals'."

How much of a morale boost is it for the club and its fans to have Joe Cole
back?

BS - "I would have thought they will be pleased to see one of their own come
back. He is from the West Ham Academy and developed under Tony Carr. He
spent a bit of time in the first team here before he moved on and it's great
to have him back. "I hope the West Ham fans are applauding him because of
the performances he can give for us."

Do you feel he can add to his tally of 56 England caps?

BS - "I don't see why not. If he can recapture his old form and play on a
regular basis for us, he is bound to get a bit of interest from Roy Hodgson.
I think his main focus first is making sure he plays for West Ham on a
regular basis and reproducing the form that we know he can produce."

Is Saturday's FA Cup with Budweiser third-round tie a bit of a bonus because
it is a break from the pressure of trying to consolidate in the Barclays
Premier League?

BS - "We're not under the same pressure we are under day-in, day-out in the
Barclays Premier League, that's for sure. We have a responsibility with a
full house and being live on TV that we put the best team out that we can at
the moment, which we will do. "There are a number of problems that we're
still suffering from injury-wise. We're grateful that two of our suspended
players are back in James Collins and Kevin Nolan, which will help us. "I'm
sure Sir Alex Ferguson will make some changes but it won't really matter in
terms of weakening or strengthening their squad because at the moment,
whatever changes he makes, they keep winning. Whatever changes he makes,
there will be eleven internationals out against us tomorrow. "it will be a
hugely difficult game but one we are pleased to be involved in, even though
it is in the third round when we'd perhaps have liked a lesser draw than
Manchester United at home. We're excited about it, we can go out and do our
very, very best and if we can create an upset that would be a fantastic
bonus for us to move on into the next round."

West Ham United are delighted to welcome Joe Cole home after the England
midfielder completed his move back to the Boleyn Ground. The Academy of
Football graduate has returned to east London after leaving Liverpool and
signing an 18-month contract with the Hammers. Capped 56 times by England,
Cole will wear the same No26 shirt he donned during his first spell at the
club between 1998 and 2003, when his mesmeric play helped West Ham win the
FA Youth Cup in 1999 and the midfielder himself be crowned Hammer of the
Year in 2003. Now, Cole is determined to write an equally memorable second
chapter to his West Ham career under manager Sam Allardyce. "It is a great
move for me," confirmed the 31-year-old. "Coming back here brings back all
the memories of the pitches I learnt how to play on. This is where I learnt
my trade and I'm happy to have another chance to be here. I've always loved
West Ham and I hope I can give the club a few memorable seasons. "The timing
was right for me to come back and I'm happy. I'm back in London and I'm
delighted to be here. I want to be here and I want to make an impact. "The
place has not changed much to look at, but I think Sam has done a great job
with the team. A few years ago, the club was in a bad way and Sam has done
brilliantly. All in all, it will always be West Ham and the history will
always be here and everywhere I go around the world, people love West Ham.
Everywhere I go, people know me for having started here."

Cole is looking forward to working under Big Sam - a manager he believes has
instilled a confidence in the club and assembled a squad that West Ham
supporters can be proud of. "Sam didn't have to sell me the club for me to
come back. For me, I have had 18 months at Liverpool where I haven't played
much football and Sam wants to play me. I'm going to need games to get back
to my best, but I want to play football and come here and help the team to
make an impact. "I could see from the outside what a great bunch of lads we
have here and there is a great spirit. I'm excited."

Cole played in an exceptionally-talented West Ham team during his first
spell at the Boleyn Ground, alongside the likes of Paolo Di Canio, Michael
Carrick, Frank Lampard, Jermain Defoe and Trevor Sinclair. On his return,
the No26 says the Hammers have a similarly strong squad, especially
considering the club has only returned to the Barclays Premier League this
season. "The first season in the Premier League is always the toughest one
and the boys have done brilliant to get 26 points on the board. We would
like to match that in the second half of the season and crack on from there.
"We have got a lot of England internationals and a good strong squad here,
so our home form is going to be vital."

Cole has already impressed once at the Boleyn Ground this season, scoring in
Liverpool's 3-2 win back on 8 December. Despite breaking the hearts of the
Claret and Blue Army, the midfielder received his customary warm welcome
from the fans who have always adored him. "It was a big thing in me coming
back - the fact that everybody here wants me to do well. The fans have
always been great for me, whenever I have been back and also when I've been
in the area visiting family. "I feel like I owe the club a little bit as
well because if it wasn't for West Ham I wouldn't be a footballer. This
club's great youth-team coaches taught me the trade."

While Cole may not have appeared too frequently for the Reds this season, he
made 42 appearances and scored nine goals for French side Lille last season,
including six in the UEFA Champions League. "We were a Champions League team
and finished third in the league and it was a good technical league with a
lot of great players. I played 40-odd games and enjoyed it. It was only
during my time at Liverpool that I didn't play as much as I'd have liked.
"That happens, but now I've moved on and hopefully I'll have a great time
here."

Cole will hope that 'great time' begins with a second memorable FA Cup
triumph over Manchester United. He was just 19 when West Ham scored a shock
1-0 fourth-round win at Old Trafford in January 2001 courtesy of Di Canio's
unforgettable winner. "We can do it again. It's a different team and a
different era but at the end of the day I've come here to play football, I

West Ham United have completed the signing of Morocco international striker
Marouane Chamakh on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season. The
28-year-old becomes the Hammers' third attacking signing of the January
transfer window, joining England international midfielder Joe Cole and
Republic of Ireland Under-19 centre forward Sean Maguire at the Boleyn
Ground. Capped 61 times by his country, Chamakh enjoyed a prolific
eight-year spell at French club Girondins de Bordeaux, where he won the
French Ligue 1 title in 2009. He then moved to English football with Arsenal
in 2010. There, despite limited opportunities, the 6'2 tall frontman has
managed 14 goals in 67 appearances over the past two-and-a-half seasons.
Chamakh, who will become the first Moroccan to represent the club, said he
is looking forward to making his mark in a claret and blue shirt. "I'm very
happy to be here, I want to play and give my best for this team," said
Chamakh. "I can bring my heading, some goals and we will see what else. "I
played with Alou Diarra in Bordeaux and we were champions together. I also
know Mohamed Diame and Carlton Cole. "I think this will be a very important
move for me and I don't want to waste any more time. I want to contribute
immediately. I didn't have opportunities to play recently, but I did well
before and I know I am a very good striker. We played only one striker at
Arsenal, so I didn't play a lot, so I hope to do so more with West Ham."

Born in Tonneins in south west France, Chamakh started his career as a
schoolboy with local clubs Nérac and Marmandais before joining Bordeaux at
the age of 16 in 2000. There, he played alongside future West Ham winger
Julien Faubert as Les Girondins won the French League Cup in 2007. In all,
he totalled 76 goals in 301 appearances for the club, including 16 in 38
European appearances. On moving to north London in summer 2010, Chamakh
scored six goals in his opening 12 Arsenal appearances, finishing his first
campaign with the Gunners with 12 strikes in total. Since then, however, his
opportunities have been limited, but he did manage two goals in the club's
7-5 Capital One Cup fourth-round victory over Reading in October. At
international level, Chamakh has long been a vital figure for Morocco, for
whom he played in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations defeat by Tunisia. However,
he has not been selected in his country's squad for this month's tournament
in South Africa. In all games, the powerful foward has netted a more than
respectable 107 goals in 429 appearances for club and country.

Second-year scholar Frazer Shaw is already setting his sights on the
first-team squad

Frazer Shaw has already made great strides this season, but now he is aiming
to make the biggest step of his career. The left-back, who turned 18 on 23
December, has become a regular Development Squad starter in recent weeks
after impressing for the Under-18s. Now, the former Arsenal schoolboy is
targeting a place in Sam Allardyce's first-team squad. Having been released
by the Gunners at the age of 14, Shaw is making the most of his second
chance with the Hammers. However, the attack-minded teenager knows he will
need to keep improving and working hard if he is to make his mark at the
highest level. "I started the season in the youth team and recently I've
been playing with the Development Squad, getting a few games in. Hopefully
everybody is happy with what I've been doing and I can stay up there in the
New Year and keep on improving. "It's always good for a youth-team player to
be pushing up into the Development Squad, and with the Development Squad
doing so well it has been nice to be in and around them, because you are
always going to improve in those surroundings. "Things are going to plan and
hopefully I can stick with it. I'm enjoying my football at the moment. "You
have always got to look at what you are trying to achieve and that is a
place in the first-team squad. You've always got to look there, so I've got
to keep my feet on the ground, keep working and hopefully I can get there.
"Maybe things happen for a reason and I'm really enjoying it at West Ham. I
just hope I can get my chance to break into the first team - that would be
nice."

Shaw is a left-back by trade, but having started his career as a midfielder,
he has also filled his original position for the Development Squad, showing
a versatility that can only aid his future career. "Left-back is my
favourite position and the coaches know that, but there have been a few
injuries in the Development Squad so I've filled in in central midfield. I'm
happy playing anywhere if I'm playing football. "I like getting forward, but
at the moment I'm working on the defensive side of my game. I started off as
a midfielder so I like getting forward, but I know I need to improve my
defending."

When Shaw was released by Arsenal, he was told it was because he was not big
enough to become a professional footballer. These days, the youngster has
developed his physique and anybody who has witnessed his strong tackling
this season would question the Gunners' wisdom in allowing him to move on.
"I've been working in the gym doing extra sessions with our strength and
conditioning coach Dan Bernadin after training so he's doing really well for
me. I'm working really hard, trying to do the best I can for myself."

While a professional contract and a first-team squad place is his ultimate
aim, Shaw is also relishing the opportunity to make his maiden Boleyn Ground
start in the FA Youth Cup fourth-round meeting with Tottenham Hotspur later
this month. "The Development Squad have gone into the Elite Group and the
Under-18s are doing well in the FA Youth Cup, so hopefully we can keep up
the good work. "We have got Tottenham in the next round of the Youth Cup. I
got a little bit of a run against Brighton at Upton Park last year, but this
year is a big one for me and I'd love to play against Tottenham there.
"Hopefully we can beat them and go on to win the Youth Cup. It will be a big
game and all the boys will be ready for it."

Cole was in England's 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup but only made two
substitute appearances. At the previous World Cup four years earlier, he
earned a man of the match award when scoring a spectacular volley and
providing an assist in the 2-2 draw with Sweden. Cole admitted he had not
ruled out trying to make the tournament for a third time, at Rio in 2014. "I
will always harbour those ambitions because I love playing for my country,"
said Cole. "Let's get playing first. I think I will need three to four games
to get to my top level."

Allardyce said Cole, who joined Chelsea from West Ham for £6.6m after the
Hammers were relegated in 2003, can rejuvenate his career. "There is still
an awful lot of football left in him, and Joe feels he needed a break
somewhere and to recreate himself," he said. Cole's brother-in-law, former
footballer Mitchell Cole, died aged 27 from a heart condition at the end of
November 2012. And the player said being near his family was an important
factor in choosing West Ham ahead of a reunion at QPR with his former
Hammers boss Harry Redknapp. "Harry gave me my first chance and I'll be
forever indebted to him. It was just a case that I wanted to be close to my
family and when West Ham came in it was too much for me not to say no," he
said. Cole said he was "haunted" by West Ham's 2003 relegation on 42 points,
in a side which also included Jermain Defoe and Glen Johnson. "You want to
come back and put things right," he said. "It is a new club I have come back
to. It is so organised and efficient and a lot of work is going on behind

club in time for Saturday's FA Cup tie with Manchester United at Upton Park.
"I've always loved West Ham and I hope I can give the club a few memorable
seasons," he said. Cole has struggled to impress at Anfield following a free
transfer from Chelsea in 2010 and spent last season on loan at French club
Lille. Liverpool reportedly agreed to pay Cole £3m to remove him from their
wage bill. He would have earned around £7m over the final 18 months of his
contract, with weekly wages of £92,000 compared with £50,000 at West Ham.
His return to the east London club, where he progressed through the youth
ranks, comes after on-loan midfielder Yossi Benayoun returned to Chelsea
from the Hammers. "It's a great move for me. This is where I learnt my trade
and I'm happy to have another chance to be here," said Cole. His former
Hammers manager Harry Redknapp had tried to lure the midfielder, who has
been capped 56 times by England, to QPR but Cole said it was an easy
decision to rejoin West Ham under boss Sam Allardyce. "Sam didn't have to
sell me the club for me to come back," said Cole, who moved to Chelsea for

new contract he moved to Merseyside but only made six substitute appearances
this season. Cole received a warm reception from fans when returning to West

Forgive me for being all misty-eyed for a moment, but one of the lost
generation is coming home, and he couldn't be more welcome in my eyes.

We are forever seeing lists of our academy graduates who have had to be sold
to keep us afloat, and we all do that ' they're our boys' look whenever an
England side takes the field will a majority of former Irons stars in their
ranks.

Now I know Joe Cole wouldn't be here if he'd manage to impress Brendan
Rodgers enough to get a regular Liverpool spot. But impressing the Anfield
boss when he's been told to slash the wage bill is a pretty tough task.

So after almost ten years away, and a couple of Premier League title medals
in his locker (no, none at Liverpool, stop making me laugh) my favourite old
boy from the ranks of that lost generation, is back in claret and blue.

Now I've already seen nonsense on message boards about Cole being a
mercenary and a traitor. It only underlines my belief that we do have some
real muppets as fans.

The vast majority of Irons fans accept Cole as one of us, a youngster with
genuine stunning ability that we nurtured. A teenage that filled me with joy
when I watched his skills on the pitch.

And I hope we played just a small part in convincing Joe that he would be
welcomed back. Far too many of our ex-players fear the backlash and abuses
that may follow a return to the Boleyn. The distasteful treatment of Paul
Ince and Frank Lampard underlines that point.

We really should be above all that nonsense, and understand that young
players will always move on from a selling club, and that's what we are and
what we have been for many a year.

When Joe came on as a sub for Liverpool at our place last month, he was
greeted by a genuine, heartfelt welcome. Applauded from all four sides of
the stadium, he must have realised the warmth and even sympathy from Irons
fans.

He has had a tough time with injuries, and tried his best to make the move
to Liverpool work, even accepting a loan move to Lille, where he did pretty
well last season.

Cole responded that day by scoring a fine goal for Liverpool but refused to
celebrate, even pushing Jonjo Selvey away - another ex-Hammers youngster -
who understood immediately that his team mate was trying to show respect for
his former club and their fans.

Now, a few weeks later, Cole is back in the fold. And even if he is now 31,
probably past his magical best, and more than happy with a lengthy new
contract at Upton Park, he's still very, very welcome back in my book and I
will be more than unimpressed if there is a peep of antipathy towards him
now.

When he left back in 2003 after our shattering relegation with a record 42
points, this club had no choice but to cash in. We were in a terrible
financial mess.

I clung on all that summer, admittedly with my fans' hat on rather than the
realistic journalist one, hoping Joe would stay. I felt that if he did and
gave us one season in the Championship, we would be promoted straight away.

And we got to the last week of pre-season before we sold him. I remember
vividly where I was, although my long-suffering wife was none too pleased.

We had just touched down in Jersey for a short break and had found our way
to our hotel. We walked into our room and the first thing I did was turn on
the TV. Not a good move. The first news item hit me like a bolt of
lightening. We had sold Joe Cole. My good lady really could have done
without the sullen, sulking that followed from her old man that day.

The reality was that Joe's departure was just as inevitable as the rest of
the fire-sale that summer. We were in a terrible financial situation. I
believe that the £6m we got from Chelsea a few weeks earlier for Glen
Johnson avoided administration.

Things were that bad. And selling Joe to the same club was as obvious as
night following day. The reality is that young talent always gets sold when
a club goes down these days, such is the vast difference of wages caused by
the Sky Sports League (sorry, I mean Premier League.)

Michael Carrick gave us another season, Jermain Defoe kept getting himself
sent off and had too be sold, while David James survived until the January
window and then both were gone.

Carrick stayed until the bitter end of that season and the play-off final
defeat by Crystal Palace. Mind you, had referee Graham Poll given on obvious
penalty in the final stages of that match in Cardiff, we may well have
turned the final around and Carrick would not have had to be sold to Spurs
the following August for a derisory £3.5m.

They also got Freddie Kanoute back in the summer of 2003 for £3.5m, they
really are the nastiest of predators when we are concerned. We actually lost
Cole and Kanoute inside a week for a total of £10m. It was all so
inevitable, so you should not blame the young players because they have
their futures, their families, to think about. And we had to sell because we
could not afford them. That's the reality.

So when the Cole story broke this week, I had a wistful look at You Tube and
the 1999 Youth Cup Final, when we beat Coventry 9-0 over two legs in the
final. I hadn't realised that Chris Kirkland was in goal for Coventry's
youngsters for the final.

We'd all heard plenty about Joe before that, but the rest of the world got a
look at the little star that night on Sky, Carrick too.

Cole was stunning and Carrick sprayed passed around just like the modern day
star he has become at Manchester United. We all felt, then, that the club
had the basis of a really fine side for the future.

Sadly it never happened. Four years later, due to rank bad management and
financial rubbish from our owners, we were relegated. Defoe, Johnson, Cole,
Carrick and David James were all in that relegated side on the last day at
Birmingham.

Paolo Di Canio also came on as a sub to score the equaliser. He had barely
been around in the months beforehand, after falling out with boss Glenn
Roeder.

It's strange that Di Canio, despite all the stress he caused the boss and
club in that traumatic season, is still seen as a mystic hero, while our
home-grown youngsters who eventually left the club, get so much grief. If Di
Canio had knuckled down and played his heart out for the club that season,
we may have avoided the drop.

But that's all history now. We are about to see Joe Cole again in a West Ham
shirt, and I for one could not be more pleased. I don't expect to see all
the circus tricks that the boy produced as a teen star, but I'm just glad to
see one of our own back in the family.

He's missed out on all the fun of the last decade, another relegation, a cup
final, and a promotion. Plus one financial crisis after another.

It's just nice to see you back where you belong Joe, welcome home.

Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh says he is 'happy' to join West Ham on loan
for the rest of the season. The 28-year-old Morrocan was confirmed as a
Hammer earlier today taking Sam Allardyce's transfer haul to three players
already this window, following the earlier arrivals of Sean Maguire and Joe
Cole.
And speaking to the club's website this afternoon, Chamakh said that he
can't wait to get started. ""I'm very happy to be here," he said. "I want to
play and give my best for this team. "I can bring my heading, some goals and
we will see what else. "I think this will be a very important move for me

didn't have opportunities to play recently, but I did well before and I know

However one suspects that the Moroccan hasn't seen too much of West Ham this
season given his subsequent comment regarding formations. "We played only
one striker at Arsenal, so I didn't play a lot," he added. "I hope to do so
more with West Ham."

A bunch of Arse? Strikers who went from north to east London

John Radford (1976-77): Having been squeezed out at Arsenal, John Lyall took
a punt on the Yorkshireman who repaid him by failing to score a single goal
in 28 appearances during the 76/77 and 77/78 seasons. Sold to Second
Division Blackburn (for whom he averaged a goal every four games).

John Hartson (1997-99): The only striker signed from Arsenal to prove a
success at West Ham. Plucked from the Gunners' reserves, Hartson formed a
formidable partnership with Paul Kitson and scored 24 goals in 59 starts for
the club. Signed for £3.5m, Wimbledon paid £7.5m for him in 1999 when he was
half the player West Ham had signed.

Ian Wright (1998-00): Joined West Ham for £500,000 in July 1998 and scored
on his competitive debut. Spent just over a season at the club with limited
success, scoring nine goals in 22 league appearances. Sold to Celtic on a
free.

Davor Suker (2000-01): The once-great Croat came to West Ham via Arsenal
following a season at Highbury. Harry Redknapp famously claimed that he cost
the entire takings of the East Stand for one year during which he scored
only two league goals. Sold to Munich on a free after one season.

Jeremie Aliadiere (2005-06): Then just 22, he moved to West Ham on a
season-long loan in August 2005. After just one start and seven substitute
appearances he was sent back to Highbury (at the end of January 2006).

Arsenal's Moroccan forward Marouane Chamakh has joined West Ham on loan
until the end of the season. The 28-year-old has moved to east London for
the remainder of the 2012/13 campaign where he will act as cover for Modibo
Maiga during the African Cup of Nations, which begins later this month. West
Ham were first linked with a move for the former Bordeaux striker
two-and-a-half years ago during Gianfranco Zola's reign as Hammers boss.
However United eventually missed out on a player rated, at the time, at
£15million. Chamakh, who has been training with his new team mates at
Chadwell Heath today could be thrust straight into the squad to face
Manchester United at the Boleyn Ground tomorrow should his paperwork have
been processed in time. However his arrival hasn't been universally welcomed
by all involved with West Ham. David Sullivan's son Jack, who has -
presumably with his father's permission - enjoyed the upper hand on transfer
scoops in recent windows Tweeted this morning: "I am very sorry about this
news: Chamakh has sign a six-month loan deal! Not my pick."

Joe Cole has called his return to West Ham "a great move". The 31-year-old
midfielder, who returns to the Boleyn Ground almost ten years since he
initially left the club in a £6million move to Chelsea was confirmed as a
West Ham player this morning by the club. Speaking to whufc.com this
morning, Cole said: "It is a great move for me. This is where I learnt my
trade and I'm happy to have another chance to be here. "I've always loved
West Ham and I hope I can give the club a few memorable seasons. The timing
was right for me to come back and I'm happy. I'm back in London and I'm
delighted to be here. I want to be here and I want to make an impact."

Cole, who has signed an 18-month deal and will wear the number 26 shirt is
understood to have arrived at the club on a free transfer. He will earn in
the region of £40,000-per-week. And he cited the positive response he has
received in the past from supporters as a returning player as a factor in
his decision to return to east London. "It was a big thing in me coming back
- the fact that everybody here wants me to do well," he affirmed. "The fans
have always been great for me, whenever I have been back and also when I've
been in the area visiting family. "I feel like I owe the club a little bit
as well because if it wasn't for West Ham I wouldn't be a footballer. This

Sam Allardyce, for whom Cole will effectively replace the outgoing Yossi
benayoun who has returned to Chelsea, was also pleased at the former England

Martin Olsson's agent has claimed that West Ham are one of a number of clubs
looking to land the Blackburn defender. The Sweden international was tipped
to leave Ewood Park in the summer following Blackburn's relegation from the
Premier League, but a deal never materialised. Now the 24-year-old is being
targeted again with West Ham said to be showing particular interest. "There
is a great interest in Martin and West Ham are one of the clubs that we have
contact with," Olsson's agent Hasan Cetinkaya told Expressen. Sam Allardyce
was linked over the summer, and he knows Olsson well from his time in charge
at Blackburn. "West Ham are a great club, but it's like I said other foreign

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has welcomed the return of Joe Cole to the
club after the 31-year-old midfielder completed his move from Liverpool.
Cole is back at the club where he started his career and has signed an
18-month contract after leaving Anfield on a free transfer. Allardyce said:
"It's a good one for us. I think that somebody as talented as Joe and as
enthusiastic about playing football and not all about money, as most
transfers seem to be about today, is a pleasure to bring back to the club
and give the opportunity he is looking for. "I think that we will give him
that and hopefully he will grasp it with both hands and produce some of the
outstanding ability and quality that we know he has and do that for us
during the period of time that his contact is with us. "If we can extract
the best out of him again then it will be a fantastic signing for us at West
Ham. "He is somebody that is coming back home from where he started. He has
realised his dreams here of being a footballer and it's great to have
secured the deal and really great that he chose us. "It's nice to have a
player who has played 56 times for England. He's just into his thirties so I
think there is an awful lot of football left in him. He hasn't being playing
regularly enough since his move to Liverpool which frustrated him. "He feels
he needs a break to get somewhere else and recreate himself and I think we
have got the back-up services and the staff behind the scenes to help him do
that. For us it is a great move and hopefully it is for him. "Extra quality
in the team is always important. Joe's main strength lies in possession and
his ability to open teams up and beat individuals is a key element and that
is what we will be looking for."
When asked about the possibility of Cole adding to his tally of 56 England
caps, Allardyce added: "I don't see why not. "If he can recapture his old
form and play on a regular basis for us, he is bound to get a bit of
interest from Roy Hodgson. I think his main focus first is making sure he
plays for West Ham on a regular basis and reproducing the form that we know
he can produce."

Cole could make his West Ham United debut in his second spell at the club

Ferguson could select a completely different starting line-up to the one he
picked at Wigan Athletic. Wayne Rooney will definitely be absent after being
ruled out for another two weeks due to the knee injury he sustained at
Swansea City on 22nd December. Darren Fletcher could come into the team in
midfield as he has not started a game since 1st December after being
involved in three of the previous four. Shinji Kagawa needs additional match
practice after his knee injury, while Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Phil

Joe Cole has completed his return to West Ham on a free transfer. The
31-year-old is back at his first club on an 18-month contract after
Liverpool sanctioned his departure at the end of an unsuccessful
two-and-a-half-year spell. Cole, who started 108 league games for West Ham
during his first period at the club, will wear the No 26 shirt he gave up to
join Chelsea in 2003. "This is where I learnt my trade and I'm happy to have
another chance to be here. I've always loved West Ham and I hope I can give
the club a few memorable seasons." He told the club's official website: "It
is a great move for me. Coming back here brings back all the memories of the
pitches I learnt how to play on. "This is where I learnt my trade and I'm

Cole could also have moved to QPR, and been reunited with his former West
Ham boss Harry Redknapp. He said: "That was the hardest thing for me,
because Harry gave me my first chance and I will be forever indebted to him,
but there was too much here at West Ham for me to say no. "The only hard
thing was turning down Harry because I love him and I would not be the
player I was if it wasn't for him."

This is a Guest Post by Matthew Todd, editor of ATTITUDE magazine. I
contacted him last night to ask how he had persuaded Matt Jarvis to do the
shoot and what the consequences might be. Here's what he sent back.

We're constantly talking to lots of different people about being potential
cover stars or being featured in the magazine and this includes footballers
and other sports stars. Attitude has been published since 1994 and although
we've had lots of sports stars happy to be on the cover like Ben Cohen,
James Anderson, Greg Rutherford and most recently Paralympian Jonnie
Peacock, footballers have always been hard to get. David Beckham became the
first one to appear on the cover in 2002 and then Freddie Ljungberg in 2006
but none since then. I know Matt's publicist and speak to her often and we
asked Matt if he would come and present an award at our inaugural Attitude
Awards last October. He said yes and he and his wife came along and had a
great evening mixing with Ian McKellen, Clare Balding, McFly, Gary Barlow
and lots of other celebs. He was clearly a decent guy so we suggested doing
this cover. He didn't need any convincing at all and jumped at the chance. I
think he relished the opportunity to show that lots of different people get
stereotyped, including footballer and that despite the image, he and lots of
his fellow players are completely at ease with gay people, it isn't an issue
for them and that an openly gay player would be welcomed in the game. He
feels that the problem might come from the supporters but not from the
industry itself, but that even that is changing. I do think that perhaps
there is more homophobia from the stands than he thinks, but it's great that
he feels happy to speak up about it. It's really time for the game to just
be relaxed about gay people. I know so many gay men who are incredibly
passionate about football, and clubs are losing out from the fact that
players being in the closet really puts pressure on them. If they were able
to be themselves and come out and it wasn't an issue to people, it would
improve their performance, no doubt about it.

FOOTBALL would benefit if more gay players came out, according to West Ham
star Matt Jarvis. The Sun revealed yesterday how 25 per cent of a poll
involving 100 professionals reckon homosexual players would be deemed
outcasts if they revealed their true identity. But Premier League ace
Jarvis, who has one cap for England, believes gay players would perform
better if they did not have to hide their sexual preference — and their
clubs would benefit too.
When asked if a gay player being open would enhance the team, the married
26-year-old said: "I'd agree with that. "Because you've always got something
you're worried about at the back of your mind. "If you can let that go and
then just concentrate on your one goal, which is whichever sport you're
doing to the best of your ability, I think that would help. "I'm sure that
would help with the team situation."

Jarvis becomes only the THIRD footballer to appear on the front cover of UK
gay magazine, Attitude, for February's edition which is out today. David
Beckham was the first in 2002, followed by Freddie Ljungberg in 2006 — but
none have appeared since. Despite yesterday's shocking revelation on
football's attitude towards gay stars, Jarvis insists the soccer community
is not homophobic. Asked if a player should come out, the Hammers winger
said: "Yeah, of course. It's everyday life. "It's not something that's going
to be a shock. I'm sure there are many footballers who are gay but when they
decide to actually come out and say it is a different story. "It's one that
I'm sure they've thought about many times. But it's a hard thing for them to
do."

West Ham have signed Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh on loan - although one
supporter of the club in particular is far from happy about the deal.
Breaking the news on Twitter, Jack Sullivan - son of Hammers co-owner David
- posted: "I am very sorry about this news Chamakh has sign a 6 month loan
deal! not my pick :("

Jack Sullivan has a track record of revealing inside information about West
Ham deals on Twitter. And while many fans welcome his honesty and insight,
this latest outburst - posted before the club itself had officially
confirmed the deal - could prove embarrassing to the Hammers hierarchy.

Only a couple of hours earlier manager Sam Allardyce had told reporters in
his Friday press conference that the club had made an 'enquiry' about
Chamakh.
"The situation I have with Andy Carroll being injured and Modibo Maiga
going to the African Cup of Nations, this moment as a striker we have
Carlton Cole and that's it," said Allardyce. MirrorFootball understands that
the move has now been confirmed. And the Moroccan striker can at least take
heart from Jack Sullivan's follow-up post: "I hope Chamakh can prove me
wrong !?!?!?"

Chamakh wasted his Arsenal chance

When Marouane Chamakh signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2010, he was
thrust into action straight away with Robin van Persie absent through
injury. The Dutchman's problems were nothing new, and the Moroccan arrived
from Bordeaux with a good reputation.

Although adapting to English football can prove challenging to foreign
players, he was scoring at a rate of a goal every other game until November,
at which point Van Persie's fitness and form relegated him to the bench and
his chances were limited. In the subsequent two years he has scored just
four goals and his departure to West Ham means he's not likely to play again
for the club. The six month loan deal is a prelude to a summer sale
regardless of how well he does for the Hammers.

While Van Persie's position as the main striker at the club was hardly a
surprise to Chamakh, and he must have known this before he signed, perhaps
the fitness issue meant he played less than he had envisaged. He'd spent
long spells on the sidelines in almost every season before Chamakh's
arrival, there was no real reason to think he could play almost every game,
but that's what happened and the former Bordeaux man was frozen out.

Apart from in the FA Cup. And the League Cup. And in certain Champions
League games. Games in which he could have shown Arsene Wenger he was still
a viable option. He failed to do that, and the performances were in stark
contrast to his encouraging early days at the club. He wouldn't ever have
convinced you he was a striker of high quality, but he was energetic, honest
and he worked hard to overcome his technical limitations. He was good in the
air and held the ball up well.

But as his stock faded so too did his endeavour. He looked like a player
whose desire was sated by his surroundings and salary, and there were
suggestions that he was enjoying life off the pitch far more than he was on
it. He was pictured smoking a shisha pipe after a game against QPR, with
Arsene Wenger saying: "It's not the best thing to do. We want him to focus
completely - without smoking."

He's far from the first footballer to be caught smoking, but it was typical
of the malaise which he allowed destroy his Arsenal career. The effort and
hard work was gone from his football, the lack of quality that made up for
became all too obvious, and this season he's hardly featured on the bench,
let alone the first team.

Quite what West Ham see in him at this point is anybody's guess. Maybe he'll
thrive again under the more disciplined managerial style of Sam Allardyce,
but there won't be too many Arsenal fans sorry to see him go and many who
will hope his place in the squad will be taken by a new arrival.
