Taylor made for West Ham
WHUFC.com
Sam Allardyce has his third summer recruit with Matt Taylor the latest new
face at the Boleyn Ground
23.07.2011

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Matt
Taylor. The 29-year-old joins from Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee,
becoming Sam Allardyce's third summer signing after Abdoulaye Faye and Kevin
Nolan. Taylor passed a medical on Friday but the deal could not be finalised
until Saturday afternoon, as Bolton were returning from a tour in the United
States. A proven Premier League performer renowned for his set-piece ability
and dynamic play anywhere on the left-hand side, Taylor will join up with
his new team-mates officially on Monday. He has already been to Chadwell
Heath to meet the manager and his coaching staff, as well as having a look
around the club's facilities. Speaking exclusively to whufc.com, Taylor
said: "This is a great opportunity to come and play for a fantastic football
club. This is a big club with a lot of heritage. It is a new challenge for
me and obviously I want to be part of something special and, from the
outset, it looks like I will find that here."

Although he has never played under Allardyce before, Taylor said he was
looking forward to working for his new manager - and is already impressed by
his vision for the campaign ahead as well as the club's grand plans off the
pitch. "I have had good conversations with the gaffer, he is such a positive
person. I think you can see already the aura around the place and the
quality of players he has brought in to add to the players already here.
"From a totally impartial point of view, I couldn't see anything other than
that I was coming to a great football club and wanted to be part of it."

Taylor is particularly relishing the prospect of turning out for the Hammers
faithful, having enjoyed his previous experiences of the Boleyn Ground on
the opposing side. He is keen to get involved in giving the fans a season to
remember after the disappointment of the previous campaign. "Hopefully
myself and the team can give them something to cheer about, something to
smile about. One thing they can count on is that I will give 100 per cent
every time I play. "Everytime I have played at West Ham you notice the fans,
so hopefully now I am playing for them, they will back me and the team this
season."

With the promise of more new faces to come and the squad settling down for
the Championship challenge - the team play Real Zaragoza at home next
Saturday before the big kick-off at home on 7 August against Cardiff City -
Taylor cannot wait for it all to get going. "As I said, ultimately it is a
huge football club and I want to play my part if I can. There were never any
second thoughts about coming here. It is a big challenge for me which I am
looking forward to, to be part of helping the team get back up to the
Premier League and do that as soon as possible. "I see this as a very
positive move for me. I don't expect to be playing Championship football for
more than one season if I am being totally honest. I just want to get stuck
in and start playing. I think it is going to be a great season."

Youngsters too good for PSV
WHUFC.com
Matthias Fanimo was the match-winner as the Under-18s scored a great victory
on tour in Estonia
23.07.2011

West Ham United's Under-18 squad were 1-0 winners against Dutch giants PSV
Eindhoven at the start of a high-profile tournament in Estonia. The Hammers
youth-team squad are involved in a four-team international competition in
Tallinn, which will also see them take on the Estonia Under-19 national team
and Russian side Dinamo Moscow. Led by coach Nick Haycock and Academy
Director Tony Carr, the young Hammers were impressive in their opening match
against PSV on Friday. Their opponents are equally renowned for their youth
system but were undone by a great goal. It came after bright interplay by
Jake Young and Blair Turgott finished with Matthias Fanimo being set away.
The England youth international cut in from the right, held off a defender
and fired under the goalkeeper. The Hammers defence then stood firm for a
fine win. Carr said: "It is very hot here and was about 30 degrees at
kick-off. It was sticky and difficult conditions but the lads coped very
well. PSV have an excellent youth programme but we were able to win and
Matthias put his previous injury problems behind him with a good goal. "It
was a good start to the competition and we have a big game against the
Estonian national team on Sunday. It will be tough but we are all looking
forward to it. Things are going well."

Allardyce takes the positives
WHUFC.com
A competitive contest at Wycombe and the arrival of Matt Taylor left the
manager in upbeat mood
23.07.2011

Sam Allardyce was satisfied with a good afternoon's work as West Ham United
kept a third successive clean sheet with a goalless draw away to Wycombe
Wanderers on Saturday. The manager travelled round the M25 to Adams Park
without five players but was still able to field a strong lineup that
included first summer starts for Pablo Barrera and Carlton Cole. Winston
Reid, Jack Collison and Freddie Sears were all feeling the effects of their
midweek exertions in Copenhagen while Abdoulaye Faye (hamstring) and Junior
Stanislas (groin) also missed out. While he confirmed that Mark Noble was
withdrawn from the bench as a precaution after feeling his hamstring in the
warm-up, another absentee for different reasons was Matt Taylor. The
midfielder only completed his move to the Boleyn earlier in the day.
Allardyce said he expected the 29-year-old to make his debut away to
Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night. He was delighted to have secured his
third summer signing after Faye and new captain Kevin Nolan. "I have known
Matt for a long time in the Premier League," Allardyce said. "I have been
there watching him develop for from the early days when he was at Luton and
then moving onwards and upwards. "[The deal] shows our desire to get a group
of players together that want to get us back in the Premier league as
quickly as possible and hopefully this season. He is the second player we
have persuaded to step down from the Premier League. "That is a great credit
to everyone at West Ham from the owners and the board down to the staff. It
is about the club itself being big enough for them to come down and want to
play football and try and get us back in the Premier League."

The manager believed that if retains the services of Robert Green, Scott
Parker and Cole he might only need three more new faces but admitted that
another experienced striker and a left-back to compete with Herita Ilunga
were priorities. Of the Wycombe draw, Allardyce believed his men needed to
improve on their finishing, having created several good opportunities only
to see them spurned. "All the players that played did their job. We are just
a little disappointed we didn't win," he confirmed. He was pleased to see
Cole get an hour under his belt, while he also had words of praise for the
youngsters including Frank Nouble, who came close to snatching a win with a
late header just over the bar. Fitness not results is his main concern at
the moment, and he is mindful that the team only have that Daggers test and
then the visit of Real Zaragoza on Saturday before the visit of Cardiff City
in a fortnight's time gets the npower Championship under way. "Some of the
players are a little behind on match fitnes, they are not quite as good as I
would have expected them to be now. In saying that, experience tells me I
have been moaning about that every season I have been managing. It is not
unusual for me to say that. "All that matters is that on 7 August, we are
ready to compete against Cardiff at the level we need to and we are all in a
position to know what is expected of us as a team and as individuals. The
opportunity to get off to a good start is imperative when you are trying to
fight your way back to the Premier League."

* A Hammers XI went down 3-0 away to Weymouth Town's first team on Saturday.
Coach Ian Hendon said: "It was a tough match. We had a very young team out
against a more experienced side. You often learn more in games like this
than you do in games where everything goes right. It is early days and we
can learn from this."

The Hammers starting eleven was Stech, Sanchez, McCallum, McNaughton,
Driver, Lee, Abdulla, Moncur, Hall, Lletget and a triallist.

The remaining development squad fixtures are as follows:
*Friday 29 July, Ebbsfleet United v West Ham United XI, Stonebridge Road,
7.45pm
*Tuesday 2 August, Sutton United v West Ham United XI, Ganders Green Lane,
7.45pm
*Thursday 4 August, Grays Athletic v West Ham United XI, 7.45pm
*Saturday 6 August, AFC Hornchurch v West Ham United XI, Bridge Avenue, 3pm

WYCOMBE WANDERERS v WEST HAM UNITED
PRE-SEASON MATCH
SATURDAY 23 JULY 2011
KICK-OFF: 3PM

Final score - Wycombe Wanderers 0-0 West Ham United

Sam Allardyce will be satisfied by another good afternoon's work, even if
there was not the winning goal we got in Copenhagen last Wednesday. The
Hammers next head to Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday, when Matt Taylor could
make his debut. There were many positives this afternoon, not least the
return of Carlton Cole and Pablo Barrera to the starting lineup.

90 mins - We are playing one minute of added time. There are 4,352 fans here
and they have enjoyed the game with both sides working hard. There goes the
final whistle.
89 mins - A crunching tackle by Brown draws a noisy cheer from the
travelling fans.
87 mins - Barrera takes a splended corner and Spence is only inches away
from nodding the Hammers in front. He showed great determination to get
there which will please the manager.
86 mins - The Hammers are pushing. First Nouble and then Piquionne go for
goal. Can they find a winner?
85 mins - Well done Nouble. He held the ball up before playing in Barrera.
He in turn found Faubert but the final pass was just a little wayward.
83 mins - Well done Montano. He has got strength to go with his pace. He set
the Hammers going and only an offside flag denied Barrera after a neat
through-ball from Piquionne.
82 mins - Faubert shows his pace to stop a Wycombe breakaway. He has been
energetic throughout. McClure has a go from distance but the dipping volley
did not come down in time and smacks against the stand behind.
80 mins - Montano races up the left and crosses. It is too strong though for
the waiting Piquionne, who started the move with a lovely raking pass.
Wycombe counter but O'Brien and then Green are on hand to deny Gary
Waddock's men.
79 mins - Barrera takes it and gets it up and over. In truth, it was no real
trouble for Bull who saves. The hosts counter but O'Brien snuffs out the
danger.
78 mins - A mazy run by Montano sees him brought down just outside the box.
He doesn't lack for confidence and the Hammers have a free-kick 25 yards
out.
78 mins - The Hammers are playing a 4-4-2 formation. Nolan and Boa Morte are
central, with Montano wide left and Barrera out on the right. Piquionne and
Nouble are a formidable presence in midfield.
77 mins - Parker gave the Hammers fans a big thumbs-up as he entered the
tunnel. So close there for Nouble with his first touch. He headed just over
after a superb dinked cross by Montano.
76 mins - Here comes Frank Nouble to replace Parker. Johnson is coming off
and Jordan Ibe is on. Anthony Stewart is on for Sandell. Charles Dunne is on
for Donnelly.
74 mins - Piquionne feeds Montano after making space on the right. The
Colombian-born youngster cannot connect as well as he would like and the
keeper saves.
74 mins - Faubert and Barrera do well on the right and the Frenchman wins a
free-kick. Wycombe deal well and counter quickly through Bloomfield. Boa
Morte sees out the danger, at least partially, before Faubert tracks back.
72 mins - Betsy surges forward and his cross had alarm bells ringing.
Eventually Green claims and calms the situation.
70 mins - Barrera and Faubert combine before the Frenchman picks out Nolan
in space. It was not the cleanest of contacts and the No4's effort is tame.
The Hammers are looking likely at the moment but the hosts remain a threat
on the counter. More changes. Ben Harding is on for Grant. Marvin McCoy is
coming on for Danny Foster and the thrid and final change sees Matt McClure
replacing Lewis.
68 mins - Tomkins and Ilunga are making way for Jordan Brown and Cristian
Montano. O'Brien has gone to centre-back alongside Spence. Faubert has
dropped to right-back and it looks like Montano will play wide left with
Barrera moving to the right.
67 mins - Well done Ilunga and Barrera again. The move finishes with a
half-chance for Piquionne. Wycombe clear and surge up the other end but this
time it is Spence who deals with the danger.
66 mins - It is early days of course but Tomkins is playing superbly today.
He just made a great interception.
65 mins - Wycombe should be one-up. Grant found space at the back post and
met a dropping ball with a superb volley. However, much to Green's relief,
the shot was wide.
64 mins - So close there for Piquionne. He met Faubert's initial corner but
just could not get the room to shoot for goal. Lots of bright performances
out there right now for the visitors.
63 mins - Piquionne wins a foul as he tried to make space on the right wing.
Good chance here for the Hammers to put the home goal under pressure.
61 mins - Fantastic play from Faubert from a long ball forward. He tricked
two defenders before slipping the ball to Parker. The final shot was
deflected just over.
61 mins - That was a good first start for Cole this summer. He was full of
running and did a lot of tireless work. The manager praised his commitment
to the cause in a pre-match interview and that hour will serve him in good
stead.
60 mins - Piquionne is coming on for Cole. Kevin Betsy, Matt Bloomfield and
Ben Strevens are on for Beavon, Ainsworth and John Halls.
58 mins - Free-kick to Wycombe in a dangerous position just on the Wycombe
right of the penalty area. Donnelly knocks the ball to Sandell but the shot
is high and never troubles Green.
56 mins - Boa Morte wins a corner. Barrera takes and picks out Tomkins. His
header is blocked and the ball nearly falls for Ilunga to shoot, only for
Wycombe to clear.
55 mins - Wycombe cannot handle Ilunga and Barrera's combinations on the
left. They look dangerous and are playing barely ten yards behind wherever
they are up the flank.
53 mins - Tomkins needed some treatment there after taking a blow to the
face as he headed for goal. It was a great chance from the young defender.
Frederic Piquionne is warming up for the first time.
52 mns - Lovely passing there between Barrera and Boa Morte carves out an
opening. The ball fell to Cole but a last-ditch block forced the shot behind
for a corner. Tomkins rose to meet the ball and send it goalwards but Bull
clawed it to safety.
51 mins - So nearly a first goal in Hammers colours for the skipper. Cole
did well to hold the ball up. He fed Ilunga who crossed deep to Nolan. The
ball dropped but it was a difficult one for him to control and the shot
flashed over from ten yards.
50 mins - A lovely piece of passing between Parker and Ilunga sets Barrera
away. The Mexico winger races into the box after leavng his man for dead but
again cannot pick out a team-mate. Tomkins does his job again at the back
when Wycombe counter.
49 mins - Ilunga tidies up after a Wycombe break. Green boots the ball
forward and Barrera shows electric pace before beating his man. His cross
fails to find a Hammers head, though.
48 mins - So close from Cole. He controlled an Ilunga throw, spun and
flashed a shot just wide of the goal. Excellent play.
47 mins - Wonderful play by Parker and Nolan see a charge through the middle
but the referee stops play for a Boa Morte foul. Ainsworth is then
frustrated by Ilunga and concedes a free-kick himself.
46 mins - We are under way again via Parker and Cole, who covered a lot of
ground in that first half. It looks like no changes from the manager. The
Hammers are kicking towards their own fans in the half in the appropriately
named Dreams Stand. The push for promotion begins in just two weeks' time
and everyone will be dreaming of an instant return to the Premier League.

HALF-TIME

45 +1 - We are playing one minute of added time. Wycombe attack again
through Ainsworth but Green avoids any drama with a comfortable catch. There
goes the half-time whistle.
45 mins - Boa Morte does well to deny Ainsworth outside the box. Tomkins has
been up against Beavon, the Wycombe striker, and has won the battle almost
every time.
44 mins - Wonderful play again from the outstanding Tomkins. Wycombe were
threatening in the area but his block did the job. A quick Hammers counter
sees Barrera race clear but his cross does not match his earlier good work.
43 mins - Green punts forward. Cole flicks it on and Faubert only just fails
to connect in front of Bull. Faubert is then shown a yellow card for a late
challenge on Sandell.
41 mins - Boa Morte teases one forward but Parker is flagged for offside.
Brown and Nouble finish their warm-up. It looks like they may be half-time
replacements.
40 mins - Barrera shows good footwork on the left wing. He crosses and
Parker nearly connects with a cheeky back-heel when well placed.
40 mins - Wonderful tackle by O'Brien wins back possession for the Hammers.
Allardyce's men are showing the greater hunger at the moment.
39 mins - Barrera takes it and when the ball comes back out to him, the
Mexico winger fires over.
38 mins - The game is opening up. Boa Morte surges down the left and feeds
Cole but the ball into the England man did not give him a lot of room to
turn. The shot is deflected wide. Corner to the Hammers.
37 mins - The Hammers fans have not stopped singing. They pause briefly as
Cole finds himself in space to the left of goal but the shot is weak. Bull
is able to save without any issues.
35 mins - So close from Parker. He blazed over from about 15 yards after a
great knockdown by Cole. Good link-up play there at least.
34 mins - Boa Morte concedes a free-kick deep in the Hammers' own half. The
set-piece is over-hit and Green watches it sail behind.
32 mins - West Ham are on top but can they find a goal to match their
patient play? Faubert has a chance to head for goal but cannot direct it on
target.
30 mins - Lovely play by Barrera and Ilunga work the ball up the left. It
ultimately comes to nothing, though. The hosts are working as hard as the
Hammers.
28 mins - Corner to Wycombe. Spence conceded it after a slight mis-control
by Tomkins. The England U21 man made up for his error with a commanding
header away from the flag-kick.
27 mins - Cole again finds room on the left but his cross is headed away by
Johnson. Another move 20 seconds later sees Boa Morte cross but Bull is able
to collect.
26 mins - Cole gets some space but cannot pick out Barrera coming in from
the left wing. Remember highlights and post-match reaction will feature on
West Ham TV, which is also playing out full audio commentary today from
Adams Park.
24 mins - Faubert has a go again from Cole's knockdown. Wycombe counter
quickly but O'Brien is alert to make a saving tackle in the right-back
position. Class from Parker leaves Donnelly in a heap. The England
midfielder's long ball forward gets Faubert in behind but the Frenchman,
despite his best efforts, cannot do anything with the cross.
23 mins - Superb play from Faubert and O'Brien nearly plays in Cole at the
near post. A corner to West Ham which Boa Morte takes. It gets to the back
post but Johnson is able to clear.
21 mins - Spence leaves Stuart Lewis in a heap with what looked a committed,
but fair, challenge. The referee felt otherwise. Wycombe build again and
Grant does superbly to kill the ball on the left wing. His ball into the
box, however, leaves a lot to be desired. West Ham come away with it again.
20 mins - Tomkins is on top in this game. He was exce2lent in midweek and is
staking his claim to Sam Allardyce with every minute he plays..
19 mins - Wycombe are playing some good stuff but Parker is slowly getting a
hold of the game. A long ball forward just eludes Cole and Bull dives on the
ball.
18 mins - Ainsworth wins a free-kick after his cross was adjudged to be
handled by Ilunga as he turned his back on the ball. Scott Donnelly fizzes
the ball in but Tomkins is in the right place again. Parker then shows his
class with one of his trademark spins away from trouble.
17 mins - Wycombe have sent some men out to warm up as well. Gary Waddock
has a good squad here as judged by their successful promotion to League One
last season.
15 mins - A hopeful punt forward by Tomkins picks out Cole, but he is
flagged for offside just as he looked like he was through on goal.
14 mins - It is pretty much equal at the moment. The home side are getting
lots of men behind the ball and trying to play on the counter. Frank Nouble
and Jordan Brown are the first Hammers subs out to warm-up.
13 mins - Well done Green. Beavon and Joel Grant combine well on the Wycombe
left but the England man is there when the ball is eventually played into
the box. Good keeping that.
11 mins - Pablo Barrera - making his first start of the new pre-season
campaign - takes a corner from the other side. The ball drops out to Faubert
and he fizzes one wide from 20 yards.
10 mins - Good play from Faubert wins a corner. The move began with Tomkins
winning a firm challenge in midfield. Boa Morte takes and the ball is hacked
over his own bar by Johnson.
9 mins - Cole is getting some close attention here. He will have to work
hard for his openings. A quick Wycombe counter sees Sandell cross from the
left and Jordan Spence is unable to stop a Beavon flick-on but the ball runs
behind.
7 mins - A crossfield ball picks out Gareth Ainsworth at the back post but
his header is a tricky one and Green is able to come and claim with ease.
6 mins - Scott Parker makes his first real contribution with a neat bit of
play. The home side are dogged in defence though and win it back. A ball is
pumped forward towards Green's goal but Tomkins sees out the danger.
5 mins - Cole goes down under pressure from Leon Johnson. Wycombe move the
ball forward but an over-hit pass concedes possession to the Hammers deep in
their own half.
4 mins - James Tomkins takes a whack in the face but he doesn't need
treatment. Herita Ilunga pumps the ball forward for Faubert but Nikki Bull
comes to claim in the home goal.
3 min - Julien Faubert advances on the right but his cross is blocked. The
ball is worked to the other side but Wycombe manage to see out the danger.
2 min - A long ball from James Tomkins forces Wycombe to concede a corner,
with Cole forcing the error. Luis Boa Morte swings the ball in but it is
headed clear.
1 min - It took 15 seconds for Nolan to win his first tackle. Wycombe
recovered well and Andy Sandell got up the left flank. The full-back crossed
but Robert Green was able to claim comfortably.
1 min - We are under way, having just had a big burst of 'Come on you Irons'
and then Bubbles from the Dreams Stand away to my left. The Hammers have
filled that completely and are in good voice on what is turning into a
lovely afternoon. Kevin Nolan looked at every single player just before the
start urging full commitment before a word with Carlton Cole. He's up for
it.

KICK-OFF

It really is a fantastic setting here with the stadium overlooked by dozens
of trees on a hill that stretches behind the Frank Adams Stand. A sizeable
crowd is building and the players received a good reception from the
travelling support. Carlton Cole was the last off after the warm-up, making
sure to pose for every picture requested by the mascots on the pitch.

Sam Allardyce will play a 4-3-3 formation with Luis Boa Morte in midfield
with Scott Parker and Kevin Nolan. Pablo Barrera and Julien Faubert will
play in support of Carlton Cole, making his first start of the summer. Joey
O'Brien, on trial, will play at right-back with Jordan Spence partnering
James Tomkins. The manager has rested Winston Reid, Jack Collison and
Freddie Sears completely, and dropped Mark Noble - who played 90 minutes in
midweek - to the bench.
Wycombe will play with a lone striker, Stuart Beavon will be the main man up
front with Scott Donnelly just in behind.

Wycombe Wanderers: Bull, Foster, Sandell, Johnson, Tunnicliffe, Ainsworth
(c), Lewis, Halls, Donnelly, Grant, Beavon
Subs: Arnold, Harding, Bloomfield, Betsy, Strevens, McCoy, Stewart, McClure,
Harris, Dunne, Ibe

West Ham United: Green, O'Brien, Tomkins, Spence, Ilunga, Faubert, Parker,
Nolan (c), Boa Morte, Barrera, Cole
Subs: Boffin, Brown, Noble, Montano, Piquionne, Nouble

Welcome to Adams Park for the latest pre-season friendly involving West Ham
United. The Hammers head into the game on a high after the 1-0 win away to
Danish champions FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night. Sam Allardyce has a
strong matchday squad again, with the numbers boosted by Pablo Barrera and
Carlton Cole.
Winston Reid, Jack Collison and midweek match-winner Freddie Sears are all
absent from the selection that travelled to Denmark while Abdoulaye Faye and
Junior Stanislas are not fit enough to be involved. Ian Hendon, meanwhile,
has taken the development squad to Weymouth Town for a friendly.

Saturday's first-team match is followed by a game at Dagenham & Redbridge on
Tuesday night before the glamour home warm-up against Real Zaragoza on
Saturday week. Wycombe, who will be in confident mood after gaining
promotion to League One last term, last hosted the Hammers in July 2003.
Then, as now, West Ham had been relegated from the Premier League, with
Wycombe running out 3-1 winners against a visiting side that included David
James, Joe Cole, Jermain Defoe and Michael Carrick. One present-day link
between the two clubs comes in the shape of Czech Republic Under-21
goalkeeper Marek Stech, who played one game on loan at Adams Park in March
2009. The two sides have met just three times in competitive matches
previously. In the most recent of those meetings, Tony Cottee and Kenny
Brown were on target as the Hammers scored a 2-0 FA Cup third-round victory
at Wycombe in January 1995. Prior to that, West Ham were known as Thames
Ironworks FC when they met Wycombe in the Southern League Second Division
during the 1898/99 season, winning 4-1 in both matches.

West Ham sign Bolton midfielder Matt Taylor

West Ham United have signed midfielder Matt Taylor from Bolton Wanderers for
an undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old passed a medical on Friday, and becomes
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce's third summer signing after Abdoulaye Faye and
Kevin Nolan. "It is a new challenge for me and obviously I want to be part
of something special," Taylor told the club's website. "It is a huge
football club and I want to play my part if I can." Taylor will join up with
his team-mates on Monday, and says he is looking forward to working under
Allardyce for the first time. "I have had good conversations with the
gaffer, he is such a positive person," Taylor added. "I think you can see
already the aura around the place and the quality of players he has brought
in to add to the players already here. "From a totally impartial point of
view, I couldn't see anything other than that I was coming to a great
football club and wanted to be part of it."

Although dropping a level to join the east Londoners, Taylor insists that
his stay in the Championship will most certainly be brief. Manager, Bolton
Wanderers
"There were never any second thoughts about coming here," he said. "It is a
big challenge for me which I am looking forward to, to be part of helping
the team get back up to the Premier League and do that as soon as possible.
"I see this as a very positive move for me. I don't expect to be playing
Championship football for more than one season if I am being totally honest.
"I just want to get stuck in and start playing. I think it is going to be a
great season."

Taylor, who began his professional career at Luton Town, netted 23 goals
over four seasons for Wanderers, notching up over 139 appearances after
being signed from Portsmouth in 2008. Bolton manager Owen Coyle had
high-praise for his departing left-sided winger. "Matty is a good lad and he
gave 100% for me during his time with us," he told the club's official
website. "But this was a very good deal for the football club and also for
Matty himself. "We wish him every success at West Ham United."

West Ham played out a bore-draw against League One outfit Wycombe Wanderers
at Adams Park this afternoon. Sam Allardyce - who enjoyed his first success
as Hammers boss against Copenhagen in Denmark on Wednesday night - sent out
a strong side for the second successive game with the start of the
Championship season just a fortnight away. However his side barely tested
their supposedly-inferior opponents, who probably enjoyed the better chances
in a drab affair hardly littered with goalscoring opportunities. The home
side made the early running and striker Stuart Bevan, who has been afforded
little room by James Tomkins and Jordan Spence should perhaps have done
better with a rare free header inside the opening ten minutes. West Ham -
featuring Mexican winger Pablo Barrera, making his first appearance of
pre-season - eventually rallied to finish the half the stronger of the two
sides but rarely forced Wycombe goalkeeper Bull into action. It was much
the same after the break for West Ham who looked flat up front despite the

Matt Taylor has become Sam Allardyce's third signing of pre-season. Taylor's
arrival was confirmed by the club's website this (Saturday) lunchtime for an
undisclosed fee, although Bolton boss Owen Coyle confirmed earlier this week
that the deal was worth roughly £2.2million. "This is a great opportunity to
come and play for a fantastic football club," Taylor told whufc.com. "It is
a new challenge for me and obviously I want to be part of something special
and, from the outset, it looks like I will find that here. "I have had good
conversations with the gaffer, he is such a positive person. I think you can
see already the aura around the place and the quality of players he has
brought in to add to the players already here. "There were never any second
thoughts about coming here. It is a big challenge for me which I am looking
forward to, to be part of helping the team get back up to the Premier League
and do that as soon as possible. "I see this as a very positive move for me.
I don't expect to be playing Championship football for more than one season
if I am being totally honest. I just want to get stuck in and start playing.
I think it is going to be a great season."

Taylor is the third player Sam Allardyce has managed to lure from the
Premier League this season, following on from Abdoulaye Faye (Stoke) and
Kevin Nolan (Newcastle).

Skysports.com understands Matt Taylor has agreed his move to West Ham from
Bolton. As revealed by skysports.com earlier this week, West Ham were
closing in on the signing of Taylor after agreeing an undisclosed fee with
Bolton for his services. Taylor has now agreed personal terms and passed his
medical to allow him to seal his switch to Upton Park. The former Portsmouth
man is believed to have agreed a four-year deal to become Sam Allardyce's
latest signing of the summer. Bolton were willing to let Taylor move on as
he was enterting the final year of his contract at the Reebok Stadium and
his sale will bolster Owen Coyle's coffers for his own transfer plans.

West Ham new boy Matt Taylor has set his sights on winning promotion back to
the Premier League after sealing his move to Upton Park. As revealed by
skysports.com earlier on Saturday, Taylor has signed a four-year deal at
West Ham after Bolton accepted an offer for the versatile performer. The
29-year-old, who is Sam Allardyce's third signing of the summer, is
delighted to be joining West Ham and is determined to do his best in helping
the club regain their Premier League status following relegation last term.

Great opportunity

"This is a great opportunity to come and play for a fantastic football
club," Taylor told the club's official website. "This is a big club with a
lot of heritage. It is a new challenge for me and obviously I want to be
part of something special and, from the outset, it looks like I will find
that here. "As I said, ultimately it is a huge football club and I want to

MATT TAYLOR swapped Bolton for West Ham - but says he will be back in the
Premier League in 2012. Like Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan and Stoke
defender Abdoulaye Faye, the left-sided midfielder has dropped from the
top-flight to the newly-relegated Hammers. Taylor, 29, passed a medical
yesterday and completed his move this afternoon when Bolton returned from a
pre-season tour of the USA. He told the Hammers' website: "This is a great
opportunity to come and play for a fantastic football club. "This is a big
club with a lot of heritage. It is a new challenge for me and obviously I

playing Championship football for more than one season. "I just want to get
stuck in and start playing. I think it is going to be a great season."

Taylor revealed ex-Bolton chief Sam Allardyce - now preparing for his first
term as West Ham boss - played a huge part in luring him. He said: "I have
had good conversations with the gaffer, he is such a positive person. "I
think you can see already the aura around the place and the quality of
players he has brought in to add to the players already here. "From a
totally impartial point of view, I couldn't see anything other than that I

West Ham have completed the signing of Bolton midfielder Matt Taylor for an
undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old's move to London further strengthens the
Hammers, who have already brought in Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan and
Stoke's Abdoulaye Faye to Upton Park this summer as they bid to make an
instant return to the Barclays Premier League. Taylor passed a medical on
Friday but the deal could not be finalised until this afternoon as Bolton
were returning from a pre-season tour in the United States. This is a great
opportunity to come and play for a fantastic football club," Taylor told the
club's official website, www.whufc.com. "This is a big club with a lot of
heritage. It is a new challenge for me and obviously I want to be part of
something special and, from the outset, it looks like I will find that
here." Taylor joined Bolton from Portsmouth in January 2008 and rapidly
established himself as a key first-team player at the Reebok Stadium. The
move to West Ham will see the left-sided midfielder drop down a division but
Taylor insists he is relishing the challenge of getting the
recently-relegated club back to the top flight at the first attempt.
"Ultimately it is a huge football club and I want to play my part if I can,"
he said. "There were never any second thoughts about coming here. "It is a

"I just want to get stuck in and start playing. I think it is going to be a

his decision to move to east London. "I have had good conversations with the
gaffer, he is such a positive person," he added. "I think you can see

Hargreaves, 30, but have yet to agree a pay-as-you-play deal. Allardyce
knows he may have to replace Scott Parker, who is wanted by ASTON VILLA and
has also attracted interest from CHELSEA. And he believes Hargreaves could
prove the perfect option if he demonstrates his long-term fitness.
Canadian-born Hargreaves has also attracted interest from Major League

Matt Taylor has completed his move from Bolton to West Ham United for a fee
of around £2.2million. The 29-year-old, who had 12 months left on his
contract, was being sought by a number of Premier League clubs, but the
Hammers moved quickly to secure a deal. The midfielder paid tribute to the
West Ham fans, and says it was the quality of players that had attracted him
to Upton Park. He said: 'This is a great opportunity to come and play for a
fantastic football club. This is a big club with a lot of heritage. It is a
new challenge for me and obviously I want to be part of something special
and, from the outset, it looks like I will find that here. 'Every time I
have played at West Ham you notice the fans, so hopefully now I am playing
for them, they will back me and the team this season. 'Hopefully myself and
the team can give them something to cheer about, something to smile about.
One thing they can count on is that I will give 100 per cent every time I
play.

'There were never any second thoughts about coming here. It is a big
challenge for me which I am looking forward to, to be part of helping the
team get back up to the Premier League and do that as soon as possible. 'I
see this as a very positive move for me. I don't expect to be playing
Championship football for more than one season if I am being totally honest.
I just want to get stuck in and start playing. I think it is going to be a
great season.' Taylor was signed from Portsmouth for £3.5million by Gary
Megson in January 2008 and with only a year left on his deal Bolton are
happy to let the midfielder leave. He failed to reproduce his best form last
season, scoring just twice, and found his left-sided position under threat
from Martin Petrov. Taylor was an unused substitute in Bolton's second
friendly of their US trip, a 3-1 win over Orlando.

Taylor has never played under former Wanderers boss Allardyce, but is
looking forward to getting to work under him. 'I have had good conversations
with the gaffer, he is such a positive person,' he continued in the
interview with the club. 'I think you can see already the aura around the
place and the quality of players he has brought in to add to the players
already here. 'From a totally impartial point of view, I couldn't see

Strong squad for Wycombe
WHUFC.com
Sam Allardyce will continue his pre-season preparations at Adams Park on Saturday
22.07.2011

West Ham United will be back in action on Saturday afternoon away to Wycombe Wanderers. Sam Allardyce will take a strong squad to Adams Park for the 3pm kick-off, with the possibility that Pablo Barrera and Carlton Cole could join the majority of those who beat the Danish champions FC Copenhagen in Denmark on Wednesday. Allardyce may choose to rest two or three of those that featured in a competitive encounter at the Parken Stadium, when Freddie Sears scored the only goal of the game two minutes from time. It is the penultimate first-team friendly - there is a game at Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night - before the glamour home warm-up against Real Zaragoza on Saturday week. Wycombe, who will be in confident mood after gaining promotion to League One last term, last hosted the Hammers in July 2003. Then, as now, West Ham had been relegated from the Premier League, with Wycombe running out 3-1 winners against a visiting side that included David James, Joe Cole, Jermain Defoe and Michael Carrick. One present-day link between the two clubs comes in the shape of Czech Republic Under-21 goalkeeper Marek Stech, who played one game on loan at Adams Park in March 2009. The two sides have met just three times in competitive matches previously. In the most recent of those meetings, Tony Cottee and Kenny Brown were on target as the Hammers scored a 2-0 FA Cup third-round victory at Wycombe in January 1995. Prior to that, West Ham were known as Thames Ironworks FC when they met Wycombe in the Southern League Second Division during the 1898/99 season, winning 4-1 in both matches.

Ian Hendon will take a West Ham United XI to face Southern League Premier Division side Weymouth on Saturday 23 July. The Hammers' new development coach and his squad will visit the Bob Lucas Stadium for a pre-season match with a 3pm kick-off, giving south coast-based supporters the opportunity to see the club's promising young professionals in the flesh. With the first team travelling to League One newcomers Wycombe Wanderers on the same afternoon and the Under-18s on tour in Estonia this weekend, Hendon is likely to have a youthful squad at his disposal. George Moncur and Cristian Montano will hope to impress after travelling with the first-team squad for their pre-season training camp in Switzerland, while first-year professionals Callum Driver, Sergio Sanchez, Sebastian Lletget, Paul McCallum and Sam Cowler could all get a chance to shine. Young professionals Ahmed Abdulla (pictured), Callum McNaughton and Matt Fry could also feature in Dorset after helping the Hammers to a 3-0 pre-season victory at Bishop's Stortford on Saturday afternoon. The Terras - who also play in claret and blue - finished the 2011/12 season 18th in the Southern League Premier Division standings, escaping relegation on the final day of the campaign. Tickets for Saturday's fixture will be available priced at £10 Adults, £7 Concessions and £2.50 Children. For directions to the Bob Lucas Stadium, click here. Barrera departure on hold

Zaragoza have pulled out of the deal to sign West Ham United's Pablo Barrera on loan, according to reports. The Mexican winger - who excelled in the recent Gold Cup competition - is the only one of West Ham's first team squad yet to feature in pre-season. However a deal to take him to the Spanish club appears to have fallen through, according to reports emanating from Spain this morning. The collapse of the deal is said to have occurred after West Ham asked Zaragoza to pay the player's wages in full plus a loan fee. The Spaniards apparently assumed they would be taking Barrera - who cost United £4million last summer - on loan for nothing, with West Ham playing his wages.

West Ham's stance is said by Marca to have altered following the Gold Cup, after which the club are said to have received a number of enquiries regarding Barrera from clubs in Russia, France and England. The 24-year-old Mexican joined West Ham from Pumas a year ago last week, but has thus far failed to settle in England.

Considered surplus to requirements by former manager Avram Grant, Barrera's appearances for the club have been few and far between. His last first team outing came back in February in the 5-1 fourth round FA Cup win over Burnley. The player - who is understood to have been one of Barry Silkman's deals - is currently contracted to West Ham until 2014, although the club have the option of excercising a one-year extention.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has wished West Ham-bound Matt Taylor the best of luck for the future. Coyle, talking to the Bolton News this morning confirmed that Taylor was set to sign for West Ham - as revealed here on KUMB earlier in the week. "Matty Taylor is a great lad," said Coyle. "I've got so much time for him and he goes with our best wishes. We've loved working with him but sometimes in football things move on, people move on to pastures new."

Coyle also revealed that he and his club were delighted at the deal, said to be worth around £2million, which will see the left-sided player - who is said to be one of the highest earners at the Reebok Stadium - join the Hammers on a long-term contract. "It is a fantastic fee," he continued. "Matty will feel it's a good deal for him and we feel it's a good deal for the football club. "He was going into the last year of his contract and West Ham were offering a three or four-year contract. I just think when you looked at the business side, £2.2million was a good deal all round."

Skysports.com understands Matt Taylor is undergoing a medical at West Ham ahead of his proposed move from Bolton. Taylor flew home from Bolton's tour of the USA earlier this week to hold talks and undergo a medical at Upton Park. Bolton have decided to accept West Ham's offer of £2.2million for Taylor, with the 29-year-old entering the final year of his contract at the Reebok Stadium. Grayson - No Max unrest

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson insists there has been no unrest from in-demand winger Max Gradel. The Ivorian winger has been linked with a summer move away from Elland Road as he has only one year left on his contract. Championship rivals West Ham tabled a bid for the 23-year-old, although that move was swiftly rebuffed by Leeds' hierarchy. Gradel scored Leeds' midweek winner against Rochdale and Grayson insists the winger is focused on giving his best for the club. United's manager insists Gradel has not submitted a transfer request, nor has he indicated that he would like to move on.

No request

"I don't know where people get this stuff from," Grayson told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "There's been no written transfer request and no unrest from him. "You've seen from his performances in pre-season that he's focused on what he needs to do, and we don't want him to leave. "People are out there to cause a bit of trouble and unsettle players but I spoke to Max about the situation and told him to focus on his football. That's all he wants to do. "The only people who matter in this is myself, the chairman (Ken Bates) and Max Gradel."

Cardiff City ticket allocation agreed for West Ham clash
WalesOnline.co.uk
Jul 22 2011

Cardiff City have agreed to accept 1,250 tickets for their season opening trip at West Ham United on Sunday, August 7. The Bluebirds board have been in negotiations with the Metropolitan Police and the West Ham safety group to secure the allocation based on certain conditions. The tickets will mostly be allocated to ambassadors who attended six or more away games last season and at least 1,000 of the fans will be carried to East London in a convoy of buses. A statement from the club today said: "Cardiff City have always recognised the need for control measures at this fixture and accept the particularly challenging circumstances surrounding this match.
"The compromise position will see the vast majority of visiting Cardiff fans attending via Officially recognised buses arranged by the Supporters Club and Away Travel Group, However, a limited number of qualifying supporters will be allowed to travel by private motor vehicle to South Mimms service area where a voucher/ticket exchange will take place. "In addition a further limited number of qualifying exiled supporters will also be allowed to travel direct.

We as a Club believe that the Fantastic support offered to the team and undoubted overall improvement in behaviour should be fully recognised. Subsequently, our ongoing aim is to facilitate persons with legitimate intent attending our games and we re-affirm our position of moving away from all forms of control on an evidenced step by step basis. We would like to thank all the organisations who have recognised and supported us in this regard. "The distribution of the allocation of 1,250 tickets is difficult with so many supporters attending away fixtures last season, However, with the need to ensure Official bus travel central to the Event Management plan, have determined that the supply of the majority of vouchers/tickets should be in conjunction with the regular suppliers of coach travel. "As such 1,000 travel vouchers will be available via the CCSC and Official Travel Group to Season Ticket Holders and Members. It is agreed with these groups that this allocation is distributed with priority given to those who have travelled to 6 away games during the 2010-11 season. It should be noted that these vouchers will be exchanged for tickets in the Trevor Brooking Stand lower tier. "The remaining tickets 200 tickets will be issued direct from the Ticket Office to persons who wish to travel to South Mimms and make the final journey to the stadium in their own mode of transport. The qualification for these tickets is 6 away games during the 2010-11 season. "These tickets are for the Trevor Brooking Stand upper tier and will be available on a first come first served basis from 10am Tuesday 26th July to qualifying supporters. "Please note there will be no transfer between upper and lower tiers and occupants of the upper tier in particular may be expected to remain in the stadium until it is deemed safe to exit. "We recognise the above arrangements may cause some disappointment but believe that we have reached a reasonable compromise for all parties.

"Thank you as always for your support."

Taylor in talks with West Ham
London24
Nathaniel John
Thursday, July 21, 2011
6:00 PM

West Ham are in talks with Bolton Wanderers' versatile midfielder Matt Taylor over a prospective move to Upton Park. Taylor, who can play anywhere along the left-hand side has flown back from Bolton's USA tour to discuss joining the Hammers' chase for promotion, in a deal thought to be around the £2 million mark. The 29-year-old was in and out of Owen Coyle's side last season after battling with Bulgarian Martin Petrov for a starting place on the left-hand side of midfield, and is keen on a move down south, where he still owns a farm in Oxfordshire. It is thought that the midfielder is seen as a replacement for Thomas Hitzlsperger, who left West Ham at the end of last season following the Hammers' relegation to the Championship. Taylor began his career at Luton Town as a trainee before making a £400,000 move to Portsmouth in 2002, where he made over 200 appearances and scored 29 goals. In January 2008, Taylor made the switch up north to Bolton, for a fee of £3.5 million. The midfielder has gone on to make 139 appearances for the Trotters, scoring 23 goals in the process, including a thunderous free-kick that sailed past the helpless Rob Green at the Reebok in 2009.

If West Ham's bid is successful, Taylor would become the third player with a Bolton connection to join the Hammers since Sam Allardyce took over as manager, following the summer arrivals of Kevin Nolan and Abdoulaye Faye. A fourth player that could potentially join that list is midfielder Joey O'Brien, who is currently on trial with the Hammers. Allardyce also attempted to sign three other players he had previously managed at Bolton in the form of Jlloyd Samuel, Ricardo Gardner and Eidur Gudjohnsen. However, the West Ham manager pulled the plug on a move for Gudjohnsen after questioning the striker's desire to play for the club, after he stalled on signing a contract within a specific deadline. With Gudjohnsen failing to put pen to paper, Allardyce remains in the hunt for a striker who can help fire the Hammers out of the Championship at the first attempt.

One player whose chances of joining West Ham seem to be fading is Leeds winger Max Gradel. The Ivory Coast international was the subject of a £2.5 million bid from the Hammers, which was rejected by Leeds. The winger is now thought to be keen on a move to French side Lille, who play in the Champions League.

Stanislas ready to play a key role in West Ham's season

West Ham winger Junior Stanislas has revealed that he is over the injury problems that kept him out for four months last season and he is ready to play a key role in the Hammers' push for promotion. The 21-year-old, who has represented England at under-18, 19 and 21 level, is hoping to be given a chance to show what he can do in the Championship – and he is keen to take it. "I hope to play a big role and play as many minutes on the pitch as I can," he said. "I want to score some goals and play my game." Stanislas reveals that he feels that he has been ready to make the step up to the next level and become a permanent fixture in the Hammers' first team. "I think I've been ready for a while," he said. "I'm not sure whether it is injury or lack of opportunity that has kept me back. But I am definitely ready to play."

The winger also admitted that he was over the injury problems that frustrated him last season. "I had a hernia and I had some fluid on my groin, but hopefully that has all cleared up now," he said. "Last season was mad. It was my worst season. "We didn't have our best season, but for me to be just sitting in that injury room and watching everyone else playing was not good for me, it was so mentally
frustrating. "But it's all good now and I'm ready for the new season."

Stanislas scored the opening goal of West Ham's 3-0 pre-season win against Bishops Stortford on Saturday, and admits he is pleased with how his preparations for the Hammers' Championship campaign are coming along. "Obviously it's good to get some games," he said. "I was injured last season and we had our break as well, so it has been good just to be on the pitch playing again." The London-born winger, who has been at the club since the age of 10, also revealed that the atmosphere around the club has changed since Sam Allardyce came in as the team's new boss. "The atmosphere is a lot more positive," he said. "To be honest, we weren't too bad last year mentally, but not many things were going for us. "But I'm sure this year, things will be a lot better."

Allardyce: Hammers weren't fit enough last season
London 24
Nathaniel John
Friday, July 22, 2011
12:00 PM

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has expressed his surprise at the poor levels of fitness among the squad he inherited from last season. The 56-year-old revealed that having looked at the stats of the Hammers squad, the players weren't in the best shape in terms of their fitness levels – a fact that shocked the former Bolton Wanderers boss. "I've looked at their stats and it doesn't reflect well physically," he said. "It wasn't great. Fitness has always been a massive part of football but never more so than now. "If you haven't got the capabilities of an athlete, you can't be a footballer."

Despite having several international players within the squad, Allardyce claims that some of the Hammers team should have been doing more in games. "I was shocked considering the size of the squad and the quality of the players, many of whom were internationals," he said. "They really should have been pulling out much more. "You look at their ability to perform at a high intensity and their sprint distances which is the level of speed needed to create the opportunities to win football matches. "Compared to the levels at Blackburn and Bolton, they weren't good."

The shocking statistics will not surprise many Hammers fans, who saw first hand the poor second-hand performances from their side, which could well have been fitness related. Recent figures show that West Ham conceded the most amount of late goals in the Premier League last season and this is something that Allardyce will want to stop. The former Newcastle boss is a man known for being fitness focused and has concentrated on getting his West Ham squad up to scratch in pre-season.
Allardyce's team have just three games left to prove their fitness before the start of their season on August 7. The Hammers face away trips to Wycombe (Saturday) and Dagenham & Redbridge (Tuesday) before a home game against Real Zaragoza on July 30.

Of his goal, which you can see right now on West Ham TV along with all the
other pre-season action, he added: "It kind of just opened up. I remember
getting the ball from Cristian [Montano]. That was it and I was through on
goal and slotted it past the keeper. It is always nice to score."

Allardyce looking to loan market

Sam Allardyce has revealed that he will be looking to take players on loan
from the Premier League in order to boost numbers. Allardyce, speaking after
last night's encouraging 1-0 win in Copenhagen confirmed that he was still
keen to bring in several new faces before the transfer deadline, including
loan players from Premier League clubs. Although Matt Taylor looks set to
become Allardyce's third signing of pre-season the West Ham boss insists
that he needs at least five more players for his squad to be of sufficient
depth to cope with the rigours of a 50+ game season. "We need to add to and
build that squad because 13 first team squad players have left West Ham
already," Allardyce told Danish TV. "That's a large number of players to
lose - obviously that's down to the financial scenario we faced. "We need
to bring in some players from other clubs, from the Premier League - if we
can get them on loan, particularly - and up the strength and depth of the
squad. "I think the first eleven or twelve players are certainly good
enough but in this league of 46 games - a long season - we need at least 20
outfield players and three goalkeepers. So out into the market as quick as
we can; we're progressing quite nicely at the moment."

Allardyce also revealed that he had used the trip to speak with retired
midfielder Michael Johansen, a FIFA-licenced agent who used to play for
Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers. "I was with Michael last night - Michael
being an agent, as everybody knows," he confirmed. "We were talking at great
length about the players that might be available although I'm not going to
disclose publically who they might be - that might put the price up too
much!"

Southampton want Boa Morte back - 10 years on
Published 22:59 21/07/11 By Alan Nixon - EXCLUSIVE
The Mirror

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is ready to send flying winger Luis Boa Morte
back to Southampton in a £750,000 deal - if the Portuguese veteran will go.
Former Arsenal star Boa Morte is on big wages at Hammers and is taking some
persuading to quit to join their Championship rivals, as he thinks he could
still make it in the top flight. The 33-year-old has been on the verge of
leaving West Ham a couple of times in recent years but held on and is now
halfway through a two-year contract.
Saints are hoping to convince him a return to the south coast is his best
move - a decade after he quit the club having spent just one season on their
books following his Arsenal exit. Boss Nigel Adkins wants a quick answer as
he is also trying to agree a fee with Huddersfield for his alternative
target, Andy Roberts.

Hendon happy to help Hess

Former Gillingham assistant manager Ian Hendon will be more than happy to
send West Ham players on loan to Priestfield. Hendon, who is the new
development coach at Upton Park, wants to help out Gills boss Andy
Hessenthaler, a man he credits for helping to restore his passion for the
game. "Andy brought a team over to West Ham for a closed-doors game the
other day," Hendon told BBC Radio Kent. "I wouldn't hesitate in putting
players Gillingham's way. "I came to Gillingham, worked with Andy - who I
not only respect as a manager but as a friend - and I've gone there and been
revitalised. I look forward to training and matches now.
"I had a great working relationship with Andy and Nicky Southall - who I'm
sure is going to relish his opportunity and step up to the plate now I've
gone. "I know Gillingham are in good hands."

npower Football League clubs vote to reduce number of subs in matchday squad
from seven to five
3:39pm Thursday 21st July 2011
Guardian Series

Football League clubs have today voted to reduce the number of substitutes
named for npower Football League matches from seven to five. The decision
will come into effect next season after the vote was taken at an EGM at
Leicester City's King Power Stadium. Managers will still be allowed to name
seven replacements for FA Cup and Carling Cup matches and five in the
Johnstone's Paint Trophy. A Football League spokesman said: "This was felt
to be a sensible and prudent step given the financial challenges facing many
football clubs and the commitment made earlier this summer to adopt UEFA's
Financial Fair Play framework."

George Maluleka wants Benni McCarthy at Ajax Cape Town
'Benni McCarthy still oozes class'
Posted: 2011-07-21 15:59

"Benni McCarthy still oozes class" – That's the observation from Ajax Cape
Town players after the former Bafana Bafana striker's first training session
with the club today. McCarthy is back in the country after spending a few
weeks on holiday in the United States and is currently on the lookout for
new team after parting ways with West Ham United a few months ago. Ajax
midfielder George Maluleka was one of the players excited after training
with McCarthy at Ikamva today. "He is looking sharp and physically still
good," Maluleke tells KickOff.com. "We had light training, but he still has
class and don't think the touch will go away any time soon." The Urban
Warriors have yet to make a formal approach for the former FC Porto and
Blackburn Rovers star, and Maluleka is hoping something materializes soon.
"I am not the only one inspired by the presence of McCarthy at training; the
whole team is. It will be great honour to play alongside him."

Fleet To Face Hammers In Friendly
BlueSquareFootball.com

Ebbsfleet United have added West Ham to their pre-season fixtures and the
Hammers will be sending a team on Friday July 29th. The fixture against the
West Ham XI resulted from discussions between Fleet boss Liam Daish and Ian
Hendon, the former Gillingham assistant manager who recently joined the
Irons in a development team coaching role at the Boleyn Ground. Ebbsfleet
have been progressing well in their pre-season games so far with victories
over Canterbury City, Leyton Orient, and Thurrock, and were only denied
another win over Dagenham & Redbridge by the visitors' last-minute equaliser
at Stonebridge Road on Tuesday night.

Taylor flies back for West Ham medical
London24
Dave Evans, West Ham Correspondent
Thursday, July 21, 2011
11:34 AM

Bolton midfielder Matt Taylor will have a medical at Upton Park after flying
back from his club's pre-season tour. West Ham look set to secure the
signing of Bolton midfielder Matt Taylor after he flew home from Wanderers
pre-season tour of the United States. The 29-year-old will have a medical at
Upton Park, before discussing personal terms on what is likely to be an
initial £2.2million move to the Hammers. Taylor, who cost Bolton £3.5m from
Portsmouth when he signed in January 2008, can play on the left of
midfielder or as an attacking wing back and West Ham fans may well remember
the thundering free kick he hit at the Reebok in 2009 which beat Robert
Green with ease. Taylor has made 139 appearances for Bolton, scoring 23
goals, but his place came under threat last season from Bulgarian wing man
Martin Petrov and he spent much of the campaign on the bench. The
Oxford-born midfielder is keen to live down south and with just one year
left on his contract, Bolton were happy to listen to offers for the player
as they look to improve their own squad. Another former Bolton player in
Joey O'Brien is also vying for a contract at Upton Park, though the arrival
of Taylor may well hinder his chances. The 25-year-old, who spent part of
last season at Sheffield Wednesday, is currently on trial at West Ham and
came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 friendly win in Copenhagen on
Wednesday night.

Scott Parker off Aston Villa wish-list as focus turns to Charles N'Zogbia
Metro.co.uk

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has dropped his interest in West Ham
skipper Scott Parker and Spurs right-back Alan Hutton after admitting he
will make just one more big-money signing this summer. Villa's one signing
is expected to be either Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia or Aiden McGeady from
Spartak Moscow. Goalkeeper Shay Given completed his move to Villa Park
earlier this week, but Villa fans have had to watch Ashley Young, Stuart
Downing, Nigel Reo-Coker and Brad Friedel all leave the club this summer.
Villa have already made a £10million bid for N'Zogbia, but Wigan are
believed to be holding out for around £12million for the former Newcastle
striker. Earlier this month, Wigan owner Dave Whelan confirmed the club were
resigned to losing the forward saying: 'We have to sell Charles N'Zogbia
because he's on the last year of his contract. 'We can't keep him if a big
club comes for him, and he does deserve a big club because he's that kind of
quality player.' With Villa dropping their interest in Parker, it now
appears to be a straight fight between Chelsea and Spurs for the 30-year-old
midfielder.

Hammers close in on Matt Taylor transfer
Ken Dyer
21 Jul 2011
Evening Standard

West Ham are expected to complete the £2.2million signing of Matt Taylor
from Bolton within the next 48 hours. The midfielder, 29, is due to undergo
a medical in London tomorrow. Taylor lost his place in Bolton's first team
last season and has just one year left on his contract. West Brom have
failed with a £1.25m bid for goalkeeper Robert Green, a sum described by a
Hammers insider today as "an insult". Green had stitches after gashing his
shin in a 1-0 win at FC Copenhagen last night. Scott Parker, another man
expected to leave, also played in the match in which Freddie Sears scored.
Also in West Ham's squad last night was former Bolton player Joey O'Brien,
who is a free agent, but there was no place for another trialist, Brazilian
Hernani da Rosa.

FC KOBENHAVN v WEST HAM UNITED
PRE-SEASON MATCH
WEDNESDAY 20 JULY 2011
KICK-OFF: 7PM (8PM DENMARK)
LIVE STREAMING AVAILABLE TO

FULL TIME - FC Kobenhavn 0-1 West Ham United

There goes the final whistle of what has been a tremendous display from the
Hammers against a strong FCK side. Freddie Sears' late winner was the icing
on the cake on what was a thoroughly professional display.

93 mins - Nouble blasts over to waste a few more seconds. Well done Tomkins
at the other end to block Absalonsen's effort. Then Spence shows poise to
clear under pressure.
92 mins - Allardyce is out of his dug-out and urging his men to show
discipline. They need to stay strong as FCK are searching for an equaliser.
91 mins - We are into added time now and West Ham are keeping the ball well.
90 mins - If the Hammers can hang on this is a great result, albeit that the
manager has said it is performances not results that matter at the moment.
To that end, he will be delighted on both counts.
89 mins - GOAL! - Sears! Wonderful feet from Montano feeds Sears and the
youngster shows great poise to slot the ball into the net. Superb stuff.
88 mins - Noble's long ball forward drops back for Montano again. The
Colombian attacker cannot direct his shot on target as the announcer tells
us there are 8,907 supporters here.
86 mins - Montano shoots for goal but the shot is deflected and the sting is
taken out of the ball. In the end it was comfortable for the keeper.
85 mins - Nordstrand misses again after being played in with a lovely ball.
Kenneth Zohore, at only 16, is on for Diouf in the home side's attack.
84 mins - Noble puts his foot on the ball and tries to get the Hammers going
again. It is a little bit scrappy in midfield.
83 mins - FCK are probing but the Hammers are holding a good line. There's
no doubt that the home side want to win this and Oviedo nearly gets in round
the back but for some alert thinking by Sears.
82 mins - That was a great chance for Absalonsen but, under pressure from
Spence, he fires high and wide from an acute angle.
82 mins - Bubbles rings out from behind the goal again. Will the Hammers
faithful get to cheer a goal tonight?
80 mins - Nouble shows some good footwork before losing the ball. Spence
tries to recover but eventually loses out.
78 mins - Oviedo and Absalonsen combine on the FCK left before the play
switches to the right. Delaney eventually gets a shot away but is fouled in
the process. Before the free-kick is taken, Bolanos is replaced by Youssef
Toutouh.
77 mins - Noble has the captain's armband, by the way. He has looked full of
running this evening.
76 mins - Cristian Montano is coming on for the bloodied Boa Morte.
75 mins - Sears whips it in and only a last-gasp header from a Danish
defender avoids a certain Hammers goal for either O'Brien or Nouble. Boa
Morte then does brilliantly before shooting just wide.
75 mins - Noble tries to find Nouble over the top but the ball is cut out.
The long-serving Hammers midfielder has been tireless tonight. As has Boa
Morte, who is fouled again.
74 mins - Can either side find a winner here as we move into the closing
stages? The manager will be very pleased with the attitude and application
of his players against tricky opposition who look set to be playing with the
elite again in Europe this season.
72 mins - Grindheim wins the ball in midfield. FCK break quickly and
eventually the ball is slid across the box for the waiting Nordstrand. Not
for the first time, the substitute cannot direct his shot on target. Thomas
Delaney is coming on for Grindheim.

71 mins - Outstanding play involving Spence, O'Brien and Sears to work the
ball up the right wing. The move breaks down in the final third.
70 mins - Here come two more changes. Jordan Spence and Frank Nouble are
coming on for Faubert and Piquionne. That will be like for like.
69 mins - Apologies for the technical issues here in the FCK press box.
68 mins - FCK have the ball in the net but the referee rules it out after a
challenge on Boffin saw the ball forced over the line.
65 mins - Boa Morte and Sears then combine and force a corner. The Hammers
fans are singing Come on you Irons.
64 mins - The game has lost some of its momentum with all the changes. Boa
Morte is upended though and the Hammers have a free-kick in a dangerous
position. It comes to nothing.
60 mins - Freddie Sears, Joey O'Brien and Jordan Brown are on for Kevin
Nolan, Jack Collison and Scott Parker.
57 mins - Great effort there from Nordstrand that had Boffin sprawling. It
just fizzed wide of the post.
55 mins - Boa Morte is back on but his head is bandaged. Looks a nasty cut.
54 mins - Reid has to be alert to deny Diouf but FCK win a corner. It comes
to nothing. They get the ball back in, but Piquionne is on hand to clear.
53 mins - FCK have kept possession for the last 60 seconds and the ball ends
up in the Hammers net. Diouf was offside though as he applied the final
touch to a flowing move.
50 mins - Boa Morte is off getting treatment. The Hammers are down to ten
men at the moment.
49 mins - FCK are on the attack now but the referee brings a halt to
proceedings as Boa Morte has a cut.
48 mins - Piquionne just had a good chance only for FCK to clear at the last
minute. Collison then played a ball into a dangerous area but it was hacked
away.
47 mins - Ruud Boffin is on now for Green. That's the only change while FCK
have brought on Johan Absalonsen for De Souza.Johnny Thomsen, Bengtsson,
N'Doye and Santin are also off with Morten Nordstand, Thomas Kristensen,
Bryan Oviedo and Saban Ozdogan are on.
46 mins - Nolan and Parker get us under way

HALF-TIME

46 mins - That was great play from Noble and Parker but the final ball was
just not there. The ball comes back into the box but comes to nothing. FCK
counter quickly and get a chance to fire a ball across the box from Santin.
It comes to nothing and that was the last notable contribution as the
half-time whistle blows.
45 mins - That led to a corner but FCK fail to make it count and Green
claims well from Bolanos' cross into the area.
44 mins - Can either side break the deadlock before the interval? I guess we
will have a couple of minutes added time. Just as I write that, Faubert
executes a perfectly-timed tackle to deny Santin as he burst into the box.
42 mins - Green looks OK to continue and so does N'Doye. Ruud Boffin may
well play the second half anyway and the Belgian has been out warming up.
40 mins - Well done Green. He came out bravely to catch from Pierre
Bengtsson's terrific cross. That confident claim left N'Doye in a heap as he
collided with Green and both men are now getting treatment.
39 mins - A smart header from Nolan kills any danger as he finds Green. That
took a bit of guts though as there were about three FCK players between the
skipper and the goalkeeper.
38 mins - Noble tidies up in midfield and the Hammers look to go again. Boa
Morte gets the ball wide left and crosses. The ball falls to Nolan on the
edge of the area but he cannot bring it under control and the home side
clear.
36 mins - Bolanos shoots over from a central position and only 12 yards out.
Green had wanted the ball earlier in the move but instead the Hammers tried
to clear. That tactic failed and Bolanos should really have done better.
36 mins - That was close. Piquionne is flagged for offside from Noble's
delightful ball over the top but it was a debatable one. The Frenchman was
in there.
35 mins - Nolan just had his first shot of the contest. It was a long-ranger
after Ilunga had found him in a central position. Wiland was not troubled in
the home goal but perhaps that was just a sighter for later on.
34 mins - Reid does well to head away an FCK cross and then is on hand 20
seconds later to clear after some neat inter-passing inside the Hammers box
briefly caused some alarm.
33 mins - FCK have the Hammers pinned back and are flooding men forward.
They are a strong side and want to win this.
31 mins - Outstanding from Noble with two great tackles while helping Ilunga
out at left-back. The Congolese did well as well to stop what was a decent
FCK surge.
30 mins - Parker is beginning to boss this. He is everywhere in midfield.
29 mins - Bubbles breaks down in the away end just as Boa Morte mis-places a
pass to Ilunga. The Portuguese makes up for his error though with a strong
run back to win the ball again.
28 mins - Ilunga does well and then feeds Faubert. Parker joins the fray and
then Nolan. Parker picks it up again and lofts a delightful ball to
Piquionne who nods down for Collison. Only then does the move break down but
it was good stuff until then.
27 mins - Santin shoots wide after a snappy FCK move. Neil McDonald is out
of the dug-out to pass on some words to the team.
26 mins - Tomkins forces Santin to run offside and plays the trap perfectly.
Nice play there on the left wing from Collison and Ilunga. The play switches
to the other wing and then back again.
25 mins - Parker does brilliantly to beat Cesar Santin to the ball. The No11
is frustrated and kicks out at the England man. Class there from the No8.
24 mins - The FCK crowd have sparked into life. Three-corners of the ground
are singing now.
22 mins - Noble is penalised for a push on Johnny Thomson in the right-back
position.
21 mins - Collison was nearly in there after latching on to a Piquionne
flick-on. The Hammers midfield are still buzzing about. The manager wants
them all to get at least 60 minutes but it will be tough on them at this
pace.
20 mins - Claudemir de Souza shoots over from 25 yards after more neat
build-up play from the hosts.
19 mins - Tomkins gives the ball away with a loose pass. N'Doye picks it up
in midfield and promptly shoots from more than 45 yards. The ball flies over
Green's crossbar.
18 mins - Piquionne is dropping deep and proving a handful. It is a very
fluid formation in the final third but so far the killer pass has eluded the
Hammers.
16 mins - Reid finds Piquionne, who brings in Parker. The England man spins
away from his marker and feeds Boa Morte out wide. The cross from the left
is not the best though and the ball is cleared. That was good stuff.
15 mins - Noble tracks back and tidies up after an FCK break. The play
switches to the other end but Faubert's cross is over-hit and goes straight
into the arms of Wiland.
14 mins - The match is settling down into a fairly even contest. We are
seeing a few fouls committed. The Hammers know they are in a game against
strong opposition, who will hope to play in this year's Champions League
group stage.
13 mins - West Ham try to respond after a spell of home pressure. Scott
Parker is upended but quickly on his feet. Boa Morte has a chance to shoot
but just over-runs the ball.
11 mins - That was close. FCK play some good stuff before a teasing ball
across the box from their playmaker Grindheim. Herita Ilunga is alert,
though, and gets there just in front of N'Doye.
10 mins - Nolan tries to chip one through for Piquionne. He just over-hits
it. FCK counter but the Hammers are trying to press them high. This is a
good game.
9 mins - Bolanos is getting a lot of room on the right flank for FCK. He
gets a chance to cross but Rob Green comes and claims comfortably.
8 mins - N'Doye clears the corner but the Hammers keep the pressure on. Reid
gets free in the box and chips for Tomkins but the homegrown Hammer cannot
direct his header on target.
7 mins - Noble is dispossessed in midfield by Dame N'Doye. The No14 races
forward and feeds Bolanos, but the resulting shot is wayward. Up the other
end, Faubert finds Nolan and his cross is knocked behind for a corner.
7 mins - Collison and Boa Morte are switching wings all the time. This is
lively stuff up top.
6 mins - FCK win a corner. Christian Bolanos whips it in but Julien Faubert
heads clear at the near post.
4 mins - Lovely play from Collison there to hold up the play. Piquionne and
then Parker get involved before Boa Morte tries his luck from 25 yards. It
was comfortable for Wiland.
3 mins - Both teams have had a bit of the ball now. Suddenly the Hammers
break down the left through Jack Collison. He crosses deep to Freddie
Piquionne who nods back towards goal only for Johan Wiland to clear in goal
just before Luis Boa Morte could get there. Collison has started on the
left, with Boa Morte on the right.
1 min - A chance after just 44 seconds for Pape Pate Diouf. The ball in was
a good one but the No13, usually so deadly in those positions, cannot direct
the header on target. Robert Green gets a chance to clear from a goal-kick.
1 min - FCK get us under way. A long ball forward is dealt with by James
Tomkins, wearing the No6 shirt.

KICK-OFF

6.57pm (7.57pm local) - Here they come. Nolan leads the way and the fans are
on their feet. Here we go....

6.52pm (7.52pm local) - There is a really good atmosphere building. It won't
be long now until the club's new No4 Kevin Nolan leads the side out.

6.50pm (7.50pm local) - Remember the match is live on West Ham TV and it
will be the only place for exclusive post-match reaction from the men that
matter. FCK
are heading back to the dressing room now and this stadium is filling up. I
was told to expect 10,000 but we may top that.

6.48pm (7.48pm local) - I am informed by our friends at Danish TV that this
is the strongest FCK lineup. They have several new faces and the one to
watch is Christian Grindheim, newly arrived from SC Heerenveen. Pape Pate
Diouf is also a fresh face from Norwegian football and will look to impose
himself on the contest.

6.45pm (7.45pm local) - The Hammers clap the travelling fans as they return
to the dressing room. It looks likely to be a 4-3-3 tonight with Mark Noble
sitting in a deep-lying role behind Kevin Nolan and Scott Parker. Jack
Collison will start wide right with Luis Boa Morte wide left. Frederic
Piquionne will lead the attack.

6.30pm (7.30pm local) - This is the first match here since Take That
performed last Friday. They were supposed to play on Saturday as well before
Robbie Williams was laid low by a bug. The concert was called off at the
last minute. There should be no such problems tonight for what is an
important match for FCK. They have a big league game here at the weekend
against Odense BK before a vital UEFA Champions League qualifier next week
against Shamrock Rovers.

6.25pm (7.25pm local) - The Hammers are out warming up. Rob Green is getting
a few good cheers, in particular

6.20pm (7.20pm local) - FCK are now managed by former Sheffield Wednesday
and Sweden defender Roland Nilsson. The home side is as follows....

FCK: Johan Wiland, Johnny Thomsen, Mathias Zanka (c), Ragnar Sigurdsson,
Pierre Bengtsson, Christian Bolanos, Claudemir de Souza, Christian
Grindheim, Pape Pate Diouf, Cesar Santin, Dame N'Doye

Subs: Kim Christensen, Martin Bergvold, Morten Nordstrand, Thomas
Kristensen, Kenneth Zohore, Bryan Oviedo, Johan Absalonsen, Youssef Toutouh,
Thomas
Delaney, Saban Ozdogan, Lass Lindbjerg

6.10pm (7.10pm local) - The pitch is being heavily watered now. The players
are yet to take the field for the warm-up but had a close inspection when
they first arrived about 45 minutes ago. Winston Reid was straight into
Danish duties, doing an interview with the local broadcaster.

6.05pm (7.05pm local) - Still no sign of the FCK team. Will bring that to
you as soon as we get it. Away to the right of the main stand, the first
Hammers fans are arriving into the stadium behind the goal. The PA has fired
up and the first song of the evening is Elton John's Rocket Man. It is a
warm, sunny evening here in Copenhagen and the pitch - laid just yesterday -
looks the part in what is an impressive setting. The Parken Stadium is home
to the Danish national team and the facilities are first-class.

6pm (7pm local) - The Hammers lineup is in. Sam Allardyce has named the
following side.

West Ham United: Green, Faubert, Reid, Tomkins, Ilunga, Noble, Nolan,
Parker, Collison, Boa Morte, Piquionne
Subs: Boffin, Spence, Brown, Sears, Montano, O'Brien, Nouble

Welcome to the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen for tonight's friendly against
FC Kobenhavn, the Danish title-holders and UEFA Champions League holders.
Sam Allardyce has an 18-strong squad to choose from and is expected to name
an experienced first eleven before introducing some of the club's talented
youngsters off the bench in the second half. An exclusive pre-match
interview with the manager is also available to view now on West Ham TV.
Definitely absent will be Abdoulaye Faye, Junior Stanislas and Carlton Cole
with that trio left behind in London to work on their fitness, while Pablo
Barrera also did not travel after reporting for the first time this summer
on Monday. Triallist Joey O'Brien is with the squad, however.
The Hammers are on something of a flying visit to the Danish capital, having
landed on Tuesday afternoon and then taking part in a light training session
at FCK's Nummer Ten base in Fredriksberg on Wednesday morning.
The team, who will be wearing their all new sky blue away kit this evening,
will head home on Thursday with their next pre-season game away to Wycombe
Wanderers to come on Saturday.
Allardyce's men have played three matches to date, with first-team
friendlies against BSC Young Boys and FC Basel ending in 2-1 defeats last
week in Switzerland before a Hammers XI won 3-0 at Bishop's Stortford last
Saturday.
The pre-season campaign will also see matches next Tuesday away to Dagenham
& Redbridge and then on Saturday week with the home game against Real
Zaragoza at the Boleyn Ground

The U18s warmed-up for a trip to Estonia by defeating Dagenham and Redbridge
and Notts County
20.07.2011

West Ham United's Under-18s prepared for the pre-season Tallinn Cup by
recording victories over Dagenham & Redbridge and Notts County. The Hammers
played 60-minute matches against the two sides at Chigwell School in the
build-up to their trip to Estonia, where they will take on Dutch giants PSV
Eindhoven, the Estonia U19 side and Russian team Dinamo Moscow. With Academy
Director Tony Carr away on International Academy duty in the United States,
Academy coach Nick Haycock led the youngsters to their back-to-back
successes on Monday and Tuesday. "Taking Dagenham and Redbridge first, we
won 1-0," Haycock confirmed. "We played well in the first half and should
have won by more, but it's obviously about getting minutes in their legs at
this stage. Elliot Lee scored the goal. "[New development squad manager] Ian
Hendon was over there watching, which was good because we obviously want to
create that link with the development squad. "For us to have a successful
season, it's not just about winning games, but about having players who
progress into the development squad and then on into the first team. "One or
two would have caught the eye in the game on Monday, and that led into
Tuesday's game against Notts County, which we won 5-2. "Elliot got a brace,
while Blair Turgott, Kieran Sadlier and a trialist got the other goals. It
was a good performance again and the lads are looking sharp. Hopefully
they'll be able to carry that form forward into the tournament, which will
be a bigger test. "Everything is about getting these boys to progress to
first-team level, and the more minutes they can get under their belts, then
hopefully they can start the season well and continue from there. "We think
we have a good batch of players and we're looking to keep the conveyor belt
moving."

The youngsters fly to Estonia on Thursday ahead of their opening Tallinn Cup
fixture against PSV on Friday before taking on Estonia U19 on Sunday and
Dinamo Moscow next Tuesday. All three matches will take place at the
10,300-capacity A.Le Coq Arena - the stadium that is home to the senior
Estonia national team and reigning Estonian league champions FC Flora
Tallinn. "Estonia will be a great experience - playing against different
styles. It will prepare them well for the season as it unfolds," added
Haycock.

Sam pleased with FCK win

A 1-0 win at FC Copenhagen left the manager more than satisfied with his
players' efforts
21.07.2011

Sam Allardyce has given his post-match thoughts to West Ham TV after a
superb night's work away to FC Copenhagen. The Hammers more than matched the
UEFA Champions League hopefuls in the first hour and then saw the youngsters
who entered the fray in the closing stages secure a 1-0 victory with a
well-worked team goal. Jordan Spence and Cristian Montano were involved
before Freddie Sears produced a clinical finish. The manager was delighted
with the attitude and application of his players as he fielded Scott Parker
and Kevin Nolan in midfield for the first time, while Robert Green got his
first summer minutes under his belt in goal. James Tomkins, Mark Noble and
Luis Boa Morte were also worthy of mention. Speaking to West Ham TV, which
had live coverage from the Parken Stadium, Allardyce said the performance
and the result vindicated the decision to take the team away from England
for a second time this summer. He said: "It was well worth a journey. We had
only just come back from Switzerland but the quality of this game at this
stage was better than any training session we could have put on. "Freddie
scored a very good goal. He was composed, had a look to see what the keeper
was doing and then slotted it in the bottom corner and it gave the 1,000 or
so travelling fans something to cheer about. All in all it was a good
work-out."

Allardyce lauds 'fantastic' finish

Sam Allardyce has praised young striker Freddie Sears for the goal that won
tonight's pre-season friendly in Copenhagen. Sears struck with two minutes
of time remaining to record Allardyce's first win as West Ham manager and
earn the praise of his new boss. Speaking with Danish TV after the game,
Allardyce said: "It was a quality goal, a quality finish. The ball in, the
lay off and Freddie's finish were fantastic. "It was a good ball from Jordan
Spence and a good ball again from Cristian [Montano]. The first touch from
Freddie Sears takes him past the defender and it was a fantastic little
finish."

Allardyce also has positive words for his young defensive duo James Tomkins
and Winston Reid, who held their supposedly superior oppostion at bay
tonight. "I think we've got a very good defensive force here," he added. "I
think those two players, Winston - still in his early 20s - and James
Tomkins - just 21 - did a very good job. [They're] a promising pair.
"Winston came to West Ham through a very good World Cup with New Zealand so
we're really looking to see his progression this season. He found it
difficult last season because the team had a bad time and ultimately got
relegated. "But this time round, he's got a much better chance of
establishing himself in the team."

West Ham recorded their first win under Sam Allardyce with a smash and grab
raid in Denmark tonight. And toast of the East End this evening is young
striker Freddie Sears, who scored the only goal of the game with just two
minutes left on the clock to give the Irons an impressive win against a side
who will play in the Champions League next season.

Although the game was, for the most, a classic pre-season friendly with hard
challenges being restricted to a minimum - with perhaps the exception of
Luis Boa Morte, who only knows one way to play - both sides had their fair
share of chances to record a win.

Prior to Sears' late winner West Ham had gone close with first half efforts
from captain Kevin Nolan and James Tomkins. However United's best chance of
the game had fallen to Copenhagen's number seven, who directed Mark Noble's
dipping free kick towards his own goal - only to be spared embarrassment by
a stunning tip over from 'keeper Wiland.

The home side, who are far more advanced in their own pre-season flattered
to deceive at times but still created a hatful of chances that should have
been enough to see them win the game. Indeed, they had the ball in the net
on two occasions but both were correctly ruled out - firstly for offside and
then for a foul (on Ruud Boffin).

However the biggest culprit for the Danes was half time sub Morten
Nordstrand who missed three gilt-edged opportunites in the second half to
put the game beyond West Ham long before Sears popped up to grab the game's
only goal.

That goal - which came less than two minutes from the end of normal time -
gave a long-overdue glimpse at what the previously-prolific Sears, who has
endured such a barren spell in front of goal since breaking through to the
first team in 2008, is capable of.

Collecting the ball just outside the box - Cristian Montero the provider
having initially received a long ball from Jordan Spence - Sears allowed the
ball to run across his body in order to make space before bursting into the
box free of his marker.

Feigning to place the ball on Wiland's left side, Sears instead cleverly
clipped the ball across the goalkeeper into an empty net with his right foot
- the instinctive touch of a striker, and one that bore a significant
resemblance to Michel Owen in his prime. Here's hoping that's the first of
many we see this coming season.

All in all it was a competent performance from Allardyce's side, who
impressed particularly with their pressing in the opposition half - a marked
difference from last season when, more often than not, Avram Grant's side
were prepared to defend in the final third alone.

Next up for Allardyce and West Ham is the rather shorter trip to Wycombe,
where they face the Wanderers this coming Saturday.

Taylor jets home to discuss Bolton exit
Published 17:11 20/07/11 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Bolton midfielder Matt Taylor has flown home from the club's pre-season tour
of America in order to seal a move to West Ham. The 29-year-old, who has 12
months left on his contract, has attracted interest from a number of clubs.
But Press Association Sport understands Wanderers have accepted a bid worth
an initial £2.2million from the Hammers. Taylor was signed from Portsmouth
for £3.5million by Gary Megson in January 2008 and with only a year left on
his deal Bolton are happy to let the midfielder leave. He failed to
reproduce his best form last season, scoring just twice, and found his
left-sided position under threat from Martin Petrov. Taylor was an unused
substitute in Bolton's second friendly of their US trip, a 3-1 win over
Orlando. The player must now pass a medical and agree personal terms with
West Ham, where he will join up with former Wanderers captain Kevin Nolan.
Taylor's departure and the subsequent income it generates should help spark
some transfer activity at the club with manager Owen Coyle interested in
Barcelona forward Jeffren and former Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker.

Sears sees off Danish champs

Sears came off the bench to convert against the Danish champions and boost
Sam Allardyce's side ahead of their bid to try and get back to the Premier
League. Pape Pate Diouf almost put Copenhagen in front inside the opening
minute with the Hammers struggling to find their rhythm, especially in the
final third. Kevin Nolan and Luis Boa Morte went closest for the visitors
while Diouf thought he had opened the second period with a goal for
Copenhagen only to see it ruled out for offside.
Morten Nordstrand fizzed a drive wide and Boa Morte snatched at his shot
when in a decent position in front of goal. But just as the game appeared to
be dying a death sub Christian Montano produced a moment of magic to play in
Sears who showed great poise to slide past the home keeper and send a small
contingent of travelling fans home happy.

Ajax set to unveil Benni McCarthy July 20 2011 , 5:55:00
SABC

Ajax Cape Town is expected to unveil Benni McCarthy as their player
tomorrow. The development comes as the club keeps a low-profile as far as
McCarthy's future is concerned, with details of the player's contract being
sketchy. Pipped at the post in the Absa Premiership race last season, Ajax
want to go one better in the 2011/12 season. The club, which appointed
Dutchman Maarten Stekelenburg as head coach recently, introduced stalwart
Granwald Scott as their captain for the coming season.
The big question on everyone's lips was where former Bafana Bafana and West
Ham striker McCarthy was and if his stay would be permanent, but the team's
George Comitis says it would more likely be McCarthy's call. Comitis says
McCarthy is a type of player who would make a big difference to his team.
Meanwhile, Scott, who has been a warrior in the midfield for Ajax in recent
seasons, is aware that captaining the side won't be easy. He is, however,
confident that he will not let the team down and is looking forward to
McCarthy's arrival at Ikamva. The club also made time to show their support
for the Nelson Mandela week, painting the Intshinga Primary in Gugulethu.
The gesture formed part of Ajax's community service project involving 140
schools.
