West Ham United have been boosted by the presence of Danny Gabbidon during
the Austrian training camp

Danny Gabbidon has touched down in Austria and is ready to take the next
steps on his road to recovery after a successful first outing for the club
in 18 months.

The 29-year-old defender played the second half of the 2-1 friendly win
against Grays Athletic on Sunday and, aside from tiredness, came through
unscathed. He then boarded the flight to Austria early on Monday morning
with the rest of the squad - including new recruit Luis Jimenez who said
'hello' to his team-mates for the first time - ahead of a ten-day training
camp.

"It feels really good to be back," said Gabbidon, who last played a
first-team fixture in December 2008. "It has been quite a long time. I have
had a few problems with injuries. It was nice to have a run-out at Grays and
we got a good result as well so it was a good start to pre-season."

The arrival of Jimenez has given everyone an extra lift and Gabbidon said he
was looking forward to seeing more new recruits. "Luis is a very good player
so he will be a good addition to the squad. We did really well last season,
I thought, so we will be looking to improve on that this season. If we can
bring in a couple of quality players that is going to help things. I look
forward to training with him."

Regardless of who he will be lining up alongside on the training pitches out
in Austria, the Wales centre-back is just delighted to be pulling on his
boots again. He explained his absence had come about after an intensive few
years of top-level football. "It has just been a bit of wear and tear really
from playing so long with a few problems and I just carried on playing. It
kind of got worse.

"I developed some problems with my back and groin and it just proved quite
hard to get rid of the problem. I have had to be patient. I have done a lot
of work with the physios at West Ham and finally I have got there and it is
nice to be back out on the pitch and performing in a West Ham shirt.

"There are a lot more games throughout pre-season so hopefully by the time
the season comes around I will be in good shape and ready to go."

Hammers arrive in Austria

West Ham United are settling into their surroundings at the start of the
club's ten-day training camp

The West Ham United squad arrived in Graz in Austria on Monday after an
early morning flight from London and quickly set about making themselves at
home in their new surroundings.

The players were led off the plane by manager Gianfranco Zola into beautiful
sunshine before heading by coach to their pretty hotel in the rural village
of Bad Radkersburg, their base for the next ten days.

New arrival Luis Jimenez joined up with his new team-mates for the first
time and pointedly went to every member of the squad to shake hands and
introduce himself. Jimenez was joined a the airport by England trio Matthew
Upson, Robert Green and Carlton Cole after they were given an extra week's
holiday following their exertions with the Three Lions in June.

The majority of the group that featured in the 2-1 friendly win at Grays
Athletic on Sunday also travelled along with Luis Boa Morte, Valon Behrami
and Scott Parker. Canada Under-20 goalkeeper Adam Street is also in Austria
with the first-team party, as is reserve team captain Bondz N'Gala, Austria
U19 midfielder Georg Grasser and promising youngsters Oliver Lee and Anthony
Edgar, who signed their first professional contracts with the club last
month.

Meanwhile, those players involved in the international tournaments at the
tail end of last season are expected to join the rest of the squad in
Austria over the next few days. Dean Ashton and Terry Dixon are the only
absentees as they have both stayed behind in England to work on their own
individual training programmes.

Zola and his coaching staff are expected to work their players hard, with
double training sessions scheduled for non-match-days. The players will also
be able to keep fit by cycling to and from their hotel to the training
pitches.

The competitive action during the trip will be provided in the shape of four
friendlies with Flavia Solva the first opponents in Wagna on Wednesday.
German Cup holders Werder Bremen follow on Saturday, with Turkish side
Bursaspor providing the opposition on Wednesday 22 July. The trip concludes
with a game against ND Nura a short hop over the border in Slovenia on
Thursday 23 July

Former Hammers striker John Hartson has been diagnosed with brain and
testicular cancer. 34-year-old Hartson is understood to have been diagnosed
with the illness after admitting himself to hospital having recently
suffered a bout of severe headaches. According to The Sun, doctors initially
diagnosed testicular cancer - which they later discovered had spread to the
former striker's brain. A friend of Hartson's said: "John had complained of
really bad headaches recently. It reached the stage where he felt something
was seriously wrong. "It's devastating news. His father is at his bedside
and worried sick. But the doctors are upbeat about his prospects and
chemotherapy will begin right away. John is a big, strong man. "Throughout
his career he was a battler - he'll fight this with everything he's got."
Hartson began his career with Luton as a trainee in 1992 before landing a
dream move to Arsenal three years later. However he failed to make an
impression at Highbury and was frozen out after the arrival of Dennis
Bergkamp. Then-Hammers manager Harry Redknapp snapped Hartson up for £3.2m
in February 1997 along with Paul Kitson of Newcastle, and the pair played a
major part in helping United avoid relegation that season. The following
season (1997/98) Hartson became one of the Premiership's most prolific
strikers, scoring 24 goals - 17 of which came before Christmas - as the
Hammers finished eighth in the league whilst making the quarter-finals of
both domestic cup competitions (where they lost to Arsenal twice). However
by the end of 1998 Hartson had begun to experience weight and fitness
problems - something that blighted his career thereafter. That, combined
with a lack of goals (he scored just four in the first half of the 1998/99
season) plus a much-publicised training ground incident involving Eyal
Berkovic led to him being sold by Redknapp to Winbledon for (an astonishing)
£7.5m in January 1999.
Hartson stayed with the Dons for two seasons before enjoying spells with
Coventry, Celtic, West Brom and Norwich - although he never managed to
recapture the form of 97/98 which had made him one of the most feared
strikers in the Premiership. 'Super Johnny' Hartson - as he was once known
by the Boleyn faithful - played a total of 73 times for West Ham United,
scoring 33 goals. He hung up his boots two years ago at the age of just 32
having been released by West Bromwich Albion.

Tristan weighing up options
Spanish striker set to make decision on his future

Diego Tristan could be set for a return to Spanish football after ending his
association with West Ham. The experienced striker signed a short term
contract with the Hammers in October, seeing out the 2008/09 campaign at
Upton Park. That deal has not been extended, though, and Tristan now finds
himself without a club. An agreement with Segunda Division outfit Recreativo
Huelva was believed to be in the pipeline, but nothing has been signed as
yet. Tristan is keen to keep his options open for now and is reported to
have received an interesting proposition from Croatian side Hajduk Split. He
is expected to make a decision regarding his future sometime this week,
having accepted that his time in England has come to an end. "My experience
with West Ham United was positive even though we were not able to continue
with the project," he said. "I am satisfied with my time in England and I am
looking to move on."

options and his former Chelsea team-mate has been made available by
Barcelona. But with funds limited at Upton Park, Zola may have to persuade
Barca to settle on a season-long loan to get Gudjohnsen to the club. Zola
said: "We are trying to spot what our ­weaknesses are. Certainly we need to
improve up front and that is the majority of the job."

Sunderland are seeking to continue their defensive reinforcement by tabling
a bid for West Ham United's James Collins. The Black Cats have just
completed the signing of Paraguay international Paulo da Silva, but Steve
Bruce is keen for more defenders. According to The Daily Mail, the
Wearsiders have now submitted a £5 million bid for Collins. West Ham have no
shortage of central defenders, so Bruce believes Gianfranco Zola could be
tempted to part with the Welshman to raise some extra transfer funds. In
addition, Collins could be lured to the Stadium of Light to join his
brother, Daniel, who is already at the club. Celtic have also shown an
interest in the player in recent times.

Dean Ashton did not travel with the rest of the West Ham squad to Austria on
Monday, increasing speculation he is closing on a move to Stoke. Stoke
chairman Peter Coates revealed last month that the Potters had made an
enquiry about Ashton, and Tony Pulis has since confirmed the former Crewe
man is a player he would like to sign this summer. It is understood the
Potters have held advanced talks with Ashton, who is keen to return to
north, and are hoping to conclude a deal as quickly as possible as they bid
to get their summer transfer business underway. West Ham chief executive
Scott Duxbury has publicly played down the prospect of Ashton leaving this
summer but it is believed Gianfranco Zola is willing to let go of a player
that has struggled with injuries at Upton Park. The 25-year-old had
originally set his sights on a return to action before the end of last
season, and the Hammers have since declared him back to full fitness and
ready for pre-season. However, Ashton was not even on the bench against
Grays on Sunday despite originally being named in the squad and he did not
travel with the party to Austria on Monday, with the club website stating he
will work on his 'individual training programme'. It has only served to

Former West Ham striker John Hartson is battling cancer

Former Arsenal and West Ham striker John Hartson is battling cancer,
according to reports. The 34-year-old, who became the country's most
expensive teenager when signing for George Graham's Arsenal in 1995, has
been diagnosed with testicular cancer which has now spread to his brain,
according to the Scottish Sun. He was given the news at the weekend
following tests at the Singleton Hospital in Swansea after complaining of
severe headaches. After starring for West Ham, Hartson moved to Wimbledon
for £7.5m. However he was plagued with injuries and signed for Celtic in
2001 in a £6million deal. During a five-year period, he scored 89 league
goals for Celtic and was voted Player of the Year by both his fellow
professionals and the Scottish Football Writers Association. A Celtic
spokesperson told www.celticfcnet: "John Hartson is a man whom Celtic
Football Club has immense respect and affection for. "He has served the
club, and the game of football in general, with distinction over many years.
"Clearly, everyone at the club fully supports John and his family at this
extremely difficult time. "It is very difficult for us to understand what
John is going through at the moment, but we will offer any support we can to
a great Celtic player. "The thoughts and prayers of the entire Celtic family

Diego Tristan is hoping for a return to Spanish football after being refused
a new deal by West Ham United and wants to start pre-season training soon.
The 33-year-old Andalucian striker was tipped to join Recreativo de Huelva,
but nothing has yet been confirmed and other options could yet arise.
Earlier in the year, Tristan stated that he would be prepared to remain in
England for another year, but if that was not possible then he would like to
go back to la Primera before retiring. "My experience with West Ham United
was positive even though we were not able to continue with the project," he
was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. "I am satisfied with my time in England
and I am looking to move on." The former Real Mallorca, Deportivo and
Livorno forward scored three goals in 14 appearances for the Hammers, but
that was not enough to earn another season at the club.

Gianfranco Zola and his first-team squad will travel to Austria on Monday
buoyed by a positive start to their pre-season preparations.

West Ham United were 2-1 winners at Grays Athletic on Sunday afternoon, with
most of the available players getting 45 minutes including Danny Gabbidon
for his first run-out since a reserve outing in January 2008. Also catching
the eye were Julien Faubert, Kieron Dyer, Anthony Edgar and Junior Stanislas
along with goalscorers Zavon Hines and Cristian Montano - with the two
Academy products leading the line as lone strikers in each half.

"I was very happy today," said Zola, who tried 22 different players in all
on a sunny afternoon at the New Rec in south Essex but was without most of
his internationals. "Everyone came through which is good because we have
only had one week of hard training and this is still very early in the
pre-season. I am pleased with how the young players did and they had lots of
confidence. It is very encouraging."

While it was a welcome work-out for established names such as Herita Ilunga
and Jack Collison, there was also the intriguing sight of two players who
are set to play a part in Tony Carr's Under-18 set-up this coming season -
namely Republic of Ireland Under-17 midfielder Eoin Wearen and England
Under-17 forward Robert Hall, who are still only 16 and 15 respectively.
They may feature at Cambridge United in a West Ham United XI next Saturday.

Savio - slightly older at 19 - travelled to Grays but was rested as a
precaution. He is expected to figure when the team play in Austria. The
first match of the ten-day trip will be at local third-division team SVL
Flavia Solva on Wednesday, when the likes of Robert Green, Matthew Upson,
Luis Boa Morte and Carlton Cole could also be in contention.

Luis Jimenez will travel after arriving in London on Sunday afternoon,
although he was not in time to watch his new team-mates play after sorting
out some personal matters back in Chile. Zola was clear about how the man
dubbed 'the Wizard' will improve his options. "He will give us something
extra especially in the last 30 metres. That is the kind of player we have
got."

Valon Behrami and Scott Parker are also expected to travel although only the
latter has a chance of playing in any of the four games. After Flavia Solva,
the Hammers take on German Cup holders Werder Bremen on Saturday before
meeting Turkish team Bursaspor on Wednesday week and then finishing up
against ND Mura 05 across the border in Slovenia a day later.

England Under-21 duo James Tomkins and Mark Noble will fly out with Jonathan
Spector midway through the camp, having had just a fortnight or so off so
far after their summer international exertions.

It remains to be seen if Dean Ashton and Terry Dixon will travel as they are
working hard on their fitness after lengthy injury lay-offs. The manager
revealed that there may be more attack-minded players on the way with
speculation linking the club with a range of players. "We are trying to spot
what our weaknesses are," he added stressing that there was plenty of time
for new recruits. "Certainly we need to improve up front and that is the
majority of the job."

extended run-out which will be welcome before the training camp in Austria.

89min - Hall has another effort and only Kitteridge's desperate save denies
him. It has been a lively cameo.

89min - Well done Gabbidon to sniff out the danger again. It looks like
being a winning start to this pre-season along with a welcome run-out for
the squad. The majority of these players will be joined by the likes of
Robert Green, Matthew Upson, Scott Parker and Carlton Cole in Austria. Luis
Jimenez has also arrived in England this weekend and will be making the
trip.

88min - So near but so far for Hall. Okus had broken up a Grays attack
before feeding Lee. He then played in Hall whose quick feet moved him five
yards clear of his marker. However, the home defender was able to get back
and just block as he shot for goal.

86min - Hall is denied a run through on goal by Toms. He has done well so
far and is clearly eager to make an impact.

85min - Good header from Gabbidon to clear the Grays danger. He then nearly
gets in Stech's way before then dealing adroitly with another cross into the
penalty area.

85min - Ilunga has the ball in the net from close range but the flag goes up
for offside. Stanislas had whipped in a low cross into the area that had the
home defence in trouble.

84min - Change in goal for Grays - off goes Nichols to be replaced by Ross
Kitteridge.

82min - Rare chance for Grays. Saviger wins the ball from Collison and fires
in but Stech is able to save with ease. At the other end, only a great
tackle from Hunt denies Stanislas making the game safe.

81min - The Hammers have switched to a more orthodox 4-4-2 with Hall and
Montano in attack.

77min - Hall may only be 15 but he is set to play for England Under-17s in
the Nordic international tournament later this month.

76min - Here comes Robert Hall - the 15-year-old striker - on for Edgar.
McKoy and McLeod are off for Milton Elenge and Jamie Archer. David Hunt and
Maty Toms are on for Grays.

75min - A great run from Stanislas ends only with a last-ditch Grays tackle.
A quick counter by Dumbaya ends with the West Ham defence getting rid of the
danger.

73min - GOAL! - Montano slides the ball into the net after a period of
pressure from the visitors. It was a composed finish by the forward. Slabber
is off and on is Reggie Saviger.

72min - Stanislas nearly slips in Edgar but the youngster just mis-reads the
pass. Stanislas is then fouled - he looks the most likely of anyone on view.

70min - It is clouding over here. We might see a bit of rain before the
final whistle. The real question though is will we see a winning goal?

67min - The game is a bit disjointed at the moment. Neither side has really
troubled the goal yet.

65min - Montano pounces on a loose pass and feeds Collison. The Wales
midfielder runs forward with the ball but is tracked well by the Grays
defence who see the danger away.

64min - Free-kick to Grays. Vernazza takes it but hits Stanislas who clears.

63min - It remains to be seen whether Savio will be involved. He had warmed
up before the game but may be saved for the Austria trip.

61min - Lovely interception by Conor Okus who sets Edgar away down the
right. Disbelief from the Hammers youngster as he was certain he had done
enough to win the corner.

60min - Grays are replacing Brayley, McSweeney and Michael Haswell with
Mustapha Dumbaya, Marcel McKie and Daniel Francis.

58min - Thomas fouls Ilunga after his surge up the left. Stanislas whips in
a free-kick that is just headed behind by David McSweeney.

57min - Lee plays in Stanislas and he quickly carries the ball 20 yards.
However, his shot is too high and clears the stand behind the goal.

56min - Grays try and build but Gabbidon reads the danger and the ball runs
through to Marek Stech.

55min - Lovely play over the middle from Stanislas after being picked out by
Ollie Lee. The ball runs for a corner which Stanislas takes and promptly
finds Spence. The England Under-19 defender cannot direct the ball on target
and his header comes to nothing.

53min - Montano is fouled coming back to collect a Stanislas pass. There are
3,169 fans here - a great turn-out from the Grays supporters. Stanislas hits
the wall with his free-kick.

45min - The half-time whistle goes and it is honours even. Expect plenty of
changes from Gianfranco Zola in the second half.

44min - Edgar finds himself to the right of goal and hooks the ball on
target. Nichols claimed that comfortably though.

43min - Grays have been well supported today with a few thousand in
attendance. Another fierce tackle on Hines that warrants a talking to for
home defender Bradley Thomas.

42min - Payne's lofted pass picks out Dyer. The ball eventually finds its
way to Edgar but he cannot keep his shot on target.

40min - West Ham are keeping possession well. Wearen gets an elbow in the
face but it was accidental. Free-kick to the visitors.

38min - Grasser's left-footed free-kick is headed clear by Grays, who break
quickly on the counter. Well done Dyer after he held up the home surge and
forced them back into their own half. Hines is back on the field of play.

36min - Hines is brought down again. This time he stays down for treatment.
Meanwhile, the Hammers substitutes come out to warm-up and get a good round
of applause.

34min - The move of the match. A lovely 60-yard crossfield ball from Collins
picks out Faubert who had surged unnoticed up the right. The Frenchman
collected the ball in his stride before cutting inside on to his left and
fizzing a low shot that just missed the far corner.

33min - Another deep cross from right-back Faubert when there was hardly any
space for him to move. No one read that though and it sails across the
goalmouth.

32min - Hines felt that one. The striker was clattered from behind but is
quickly up again. Payne is showing some lovely touches in midfield but Grays
are doing well to frustrate their visitors.

30min - Serge Makofo gets a shot away but Kurucz gets down low to save. He
was never really troubled was the Hungarian Under-21 international, who
signed his new contract this week having agreed the permanent move from
Ujpest FC last month.

28min - He may only be 16 but Wearen is already at least 6' tall and doing
well out on the right flank.

27min - Fry, the Under-18s captain from last season, concedes a free-kick
near the corner flag. Brayley will take this set-piece. He steps up and
curls it into Kurucz's grateful grasp.

26min - Allan McLeod steps up but his curling effort is high and wide.

25min - N'Gala concedes a corner after Slabber's cross into the box. Collins
then heads it away but Faubert concedes a free-kick on the edge of the
penalty area. Chance for Grays to test Kurucz again with a set-piece from 20
yards.

24min - Nearly the lead again for the Hammers. Hines did really well to work
an opening and fired in a shot that Nichols parried into the path of Wearen.
The youngster could not direct his effort on target though.

23min - Surging run from Dyer through the mddile but a good tackle from
ex-Watford man Paulo Vernazza denies him a sight of goal.

22min - GOAL! - An equaliser from former Spurs youth-team product Jamie
Slabber after he tricked his way past James Collins into space on the
right-hand side of the goal. There was little Peter Kurucz could do about
the shot low to his right into the corner.

18min - The game is a little bit scrappy since that opening goal. Both teams
are operating at a lively pace which is encouraging since we are so early in
the summer.

16min - Nick McKoy is down after a hefty challenge.

15min - GOAL! - Hines scores with a neat finish after bright play from Edgar
along the left. The striker has started this pre-season like he finished
last year's and is looking lively. Injury hampered his progress last year
but he still scored on his only first-team outing - in the League Cup
against Macclesfield Town - and was also an unused substitute for Jamaica in
a spring friendy against Nigeria.

13min - Wearen has not looked out of place and has linked up well with his
fellow midfielders. Kieron Dyer, the 33-times capped England international,
is urging him on and giving him plenty of encouragement.

11min - Hines cuts in from the left and has another go, but it is straight
at Nichols. Good work then from Bondz N'Gala to deal with a Grays
counterattack before Faubert gets another decent cross in. It is end to end
stuff.

10min - A decent shout for a penalty there after Wearen's shot struck an
arm. It had all begun with a terrific cross from Faubert to Hines before the
ball fell to the Irish midfielder to try his luck.

9min - Wearen tries to pick out Hines but the ball runs through to Paul
Nichols in the Grays goal.

7min - First shot from Grays from Bertie Brayley, the former West Ham
academy graduate who played in the 1999 FA Youth Cup winning team with
Michael Carrick and Joe Cole.

6min - Payne is playing in an advanced role in midfield, with Grasser and
Dyer also central.

4min - Jay Lovett is penalised for a foul on Zavon Hines. The striker is
playing as a one forward, with Wearen on the right and Edgar on the left
joining when ever possible.

3min - Bright early play, particularly down the left but Julien Faubert -
fresh from his Real Madrid loan spell - gets a chance to surge up the right.
Fry picks him out and he in turn slips it back to Eoin Wearen but the shot
is off target.

2min - Anthony Edgar sets left-back Matty Fry down the left and he runs 20
yards before crossing. The ball is knocked out for a corner. Edgar takes it
and picks out Collins at the far post. The Wales defender mis-hits his
volley and it goes wide of the post.

1min - Grays get us under way and there is an early touch for Peter Kurucz
after a lofted ball forward.

Gianfranco Zola has revealed that his priority this summer is to improve his
attacking options. Zola - who has already landed Luis Jimenez on loan from
Inter - still hopes to sign Jimenez's former team mate Mancini, with
Gianluca Nani in Milan again this weekend in an attempt to rubber-stamp the
deal. At least two other European-based foreign strikers - one experienced,
one considerably younger - are being courted by the Hammers as Zola attempts
to finalise his squad for the forthcoming 2009/10 campaign. Talking to Sky
Sports this afternoon following United's 2-1 friendly win at Grays, he said:
"We are trying to spot what our weaknesses are. Certainly we need to improve
up front and that is the majority of the job."
And when pushed on rumoured interest in Barcelona's Eidur Gudjohnsen, Zola
refused to be drawn, adding: "Eidur is certainly a very good player. I am
sure West Ham are not the only team who are looking for a player like him."
The Italian manager - who leaves for Austria for a two-week tour with his
squad tomorrow morning - also revealed that the one-year contract offered to
Lucas Neill last month remains on the table. Asked if Neill would be
re-signing, Zola said: "We hope so. He has got our trust and we like him, so
it is down to him."

A second half strike from Cristian Montano gave an understregth Hammers a
winning start to pre-season. Despite earlier reports suggesting that
Gianfranco Zola would field a full-strength first team only Julien Faubert
and James Collins had more than a handful of first team games under their
respective belts from the starting XI. The likes of Rob Green, James
Tomkins, Matthew Upson, Scott Parker, Dean Ashton, Carlton Cole and Luis
Jimenez were all excused duty ahead of this week's trip to Austria, for
which the squad leaves London tomorrow. Despite the weakened line-up the
Hammers started well and both James Collins and recent arrival Eoin Wearen
had chances in the opening minutes. United were then denied a penalty on the
10th minute mark when 16-year-old Wearen's effort clearly hit the arm of an
Athletic defender although nothing was given. However the Hammers didn't
have to wait long before taking the lead; Zavon Hines, who missed a late
sitter in the friendly here last pre-season made amends with a well taken
effort from the edge of the box on the quarter hour mark. Anthony Edgar also
deserved a mention for some excellent build-up play.

The lead was to prove short-lived however as former Tottenham trainee Jamie
Slabber made a bit of a monkey out of James Collins just four minutes later.
The Welsh international, and not for the first time in his career, was left
flat-footed having been turned inside out by Slabber who made the most of
the space his clever play had created by firing across Peter Kurucz into the
far bottom corner.

No more goals ensued ahead of the break and it was to be a far different
team that lined up for the second half. Of West Ham's original starting XI,
only Edgar remained; Herita Ilunga and Jack Collison being the notable first
team arrivals. However it was to be one of Tony Carr's youngsters who stole
the show in the second half. 18-year-old Cristian Montano, who hails from
Columbia gave the Hammers a deserved win when he struck the winning goal on
73 minutes. Having found his way into the box, Montano saw his first effort
blocked before slotting his second in the far corner.

A healthy travelling Hammers contingent were also treated to a cameo from
15-year-old striker Robert Hall, who gave the busy Edgar a rest for the
final quarter-of-an-hour. Hall, who is set to feature for England's under
17s later this summer made a good impresssion and created three efforts on
goal during his brief appearance on the field. With many fans opting to stay
away due to Grays' insistence on charging £20 admission fee (across the
board once the first 400 concessions had been sold) the 5,000 capacity New
Rec was almost half empty, although the Conference club will no doubt be
happy from the bumper gate receipts.

Next up for the Hammers is the friendly against Austrian outfit Flavia Solva
in Wagna this coming Wednesday evening - the first of four games Zola's side
are set to play on their two-week tour.

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola has hinted that he could be considering an
offer for Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen as he looks to increase his
attacking options.
The Iceland international is thought to be close to leaving Camp Nou and it
has been claimed that Aston Villa, Everton and Fulham are monitoring the
situation. But Zola has now indicated that he could enter the race for
Gudjohnsen after witnessing the forward's ability firsthand during their
time together at Chelsea. The Italian holds his former team-mate in high
regard, but recognises he will not be the only European manager aware of the
30-year-old's talents. Zola told Sky Sports News: "Eidur is certainly a
very, very good player. I am sure West Ham are not the only team who are
looking for a good player like him."

West Ham finished ninth in the Premier League last season and Zola is
looking to improve on that display in the coming campaign. Luis Jimenez has
arrived on loan at Upton Park from Inter Milan to increase the Hammers'
guile in the attacking third, but their manager is still keen for more
variety. "We are trying to spot what our weaknesses can be," added Zola.
"Certainly we need to improve upfront and that is the majority of the job."

Zola is also hopeful defender Lucas Neill will agree a return to East London

So here we go, once again. A well trimmed squad, long and medium term
injuries nearing readiness (Dyer, Ashton, Gabbidon, Behrami, Parker), a
great new signing in Jimenez and the tantalising possibility of Mancini to
follow,.

In addition Junior Stanislas, Jack Collison and James Tomkins showed well
last season, Savio must now start to show he is worth the £5M investment,
Carlton Cole leading the line and finally Lucas Neill, will he re-sign for
us?

West Ham's squad is thin, however Gianfranco wants it to be that way, he got
rid of some of the stiffs and Freddie Sears will hopefully learn to be a
first team striker under the tuition of our old friend Mr Warnock… ahem..

So much of my expectation revolves around us staying as injury free as
possible given the stresses of a premiership campaign and the accompanying
cup competitions.

The loss of Behrami and Collison on quick succession combined with Scotty
Parker and Dean Ashton's prolonged absences took the steam out of our
campaign in the closing stages of last season. In the event perhaps not a
bad thing that Europa football eluded us, Zola's project needs another
season to take shape.

As always at this stage of preseason there are so many ifs and buts, however
we saw enough toward the end of last season to suggest there may be bright
things on the horizon. In particular Cole's goal (goal of the season IMHO)
against Wigan was a footballing work of art.

A solid defence is also required, the loss of Lucas Neill without a quality
replacement could prove crucial. Matty Upson remains with us, James Tomkins
is looking premiership quality.

Herita Llunga is our best left back in many a year, Danny Gabbidon and James
Collins are right there in the defensive mix. There is a question mark over
Jonathan Spector's ability to step in as permanent right back should we not
replace Neill or he not sign on again.

If we can get our defence right and not ship some of the silly goals we did
last season I believe we have the talent and the confidence to more than
surprise a few people this season.

A couple more quality signings and the return of Dean Ashton, fit, well and
raring to go could be the lift we need to push on for a Europa place.

The top 4 will not change though perhaps Manchester City will challenge
them. I don't think City have the manager to achieve Champions league
football. Hughes to City will be like Ranieri to Chelsea

The Europa places will be fought out by Manchester City, Everton, Aston
Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and West Ham. If West Ham make it into the
top 7 they will have had a very good season and I believe that is quite
possible.

So many ifs and buts, my hope and belief is that we will improve on last
season by some margin.

Hartson Fighting Brain Cancer

FORMER footie star John Hartson has been diagnosed with brain cancer, The
Sun can reveal. John, 34, was given the devastating news after he went into
hospital with splitting headaches. The ex-Wales, Arsenal, West Ham and
Celtic striker is believed to be starting chemotherapy today - and has told
family and friends he is ready for the biggest fight of his life. A close
friend said last night: "If anyone can beat this, big John can."
John - a pundit on collapsed sports channel Setanta after he quit football
last year - went to Singleton Hospital in Swansea, Wales, on Friday. He had
been suffering severe headaches. John's family remained by his side all
weekend while doctors ran a series of tests. Yesterday they told John he was
suffering from testicular cancer - and that the disease had spread to his
brain. A pal said: "John had complained of really bad headaches recently.
"It reached the stage where he felt something was seriously wrong.
"It's devastating news for John and his family. His father is at his bedside
and worried sick. But the doctors are upbeat about his prospects and
chemotherapy will begin right away. John is a big, strong man. "Throughout
his career he was a battler - he'll fight this with everything he's got."

Season tickets have gone on general sale for all supporters. With pre-season
under way, the squad taking shape and the new fixtures out, there is plenty
of excitement and optimism about the start of the new 2009/10 season.
Unsurprisingly, season ticket sales are up when compared to the same period
last year, including a rise in new applicants. With sales capped at 26,000
and with the additional benefit of prices having been reduced by up to eight
per cent, the club is expecting the number sold to be as impressive as the
24,200 season tickets last season. The first home game of the Barclays
Premier League season is the small matter of Tottenham Hotspur's visit at
1.30pm on Sunday 23 August. In anticipation for the high demand and for the
convenience of fans, the Ticket Office has extended its opening hours for
the first day of general sale until 5pm on Saturday 11 July.
Tickets will be available by calling 0871 222 2700 via Option 3 or
alternatively in person at the West Stand Ticket Office with stewards on
hand to show the view from the seats available. The same procedures apply
to all concession rate tickets and those needing to supply the club with

weekend

West Ham United Community Sports Trust staff will be out in force again this
weekend after a successful event at City Airport last Saturday. The Trust's
coaches will be present at the Newham Mayor's Show this Saturday and Sunday
in Central Park, East Ham, to deliver multi-sports coaching to the
youngsters present. Saturday's show in east London follows the significant
contribution the club made to the prestigious City Airport Funday and
Airshow on Saturday 4 July, where over 1,500 young participants engaged in
activities during the day. Children aged between four and 14 received
technical coaching in dribbling and turning skills before competing in
individual timed trials. Each session concluded with an organised game
between the youngsters. The event was the first of a series of summer road
show activities where West Ham will be providing outreach activities at
community events.
West Ham United Community Sports Trust CEO Mick King said: "These events are
important to help link the club to its communities. The activities are
provided by talented young coaches who are recruited locally and have a
natural affinity with local communities. Their commitment, enthusiasm and
professionalism are of the highest standard. They are excellent ambassadors
for the club."
The Community Sports Trust team next move on to Dagenham Town Show on
Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July.

West Ham United take a giant leap forward in their pre-season schedule on
Monday when they head to Austria for a two-week training camp.

Gianfranco Zola will take his squad to Bad Radkersburg following the
pre-season friendly against Grays Athletic this Sunday, which comes at the
end of a productive week's work back at Chadwell Heath.

Following their arrival, the first friendly match is set to see the Hammers
take on local side SVL Flavia Solva in Wagna on Wednesday 15 July before
tackling German giants Werder Bremen in Bad Waltersdorf on Saturday 18 July.

West Ham return to Bad Radkersberg to face Turkish outfit Bursaspor on
Wednesday 22 July before finishing up on Thursday 23 July with the potential
of a short trip across the border to the Slovenian town of Murska Sobota to
take on ND Mura 05. Please note that any changes to fixtures and dates will
be confirmed as soon as possible via whufc.com.

Zola believes the trip will act as perfect pre-season preparation for his
players. "I am looking forward to the pre-season camp and it should be very
good for us," he said. "It is an important part of the season and it will be
good to get everyone together and preparing in the right way. We are
determined to improve next season and this will help us a lot."

The manager and his squad will then return to England ahead of the trip to
China for the Barclays Asia Trophy the following week when they will take on
Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals on Wednesday 29 July. Hull City and
Chinese Super League team Beijing Guoan will meet in the other semi-final,
with the final being held on Friday 31 July.

SVL Flavia Solva

SVL Flavia Solva are from Wagna in southern Styria. The club dates back to
1952, although its current incarnation came about when SV Flavia Solva
merged with SV Leibnitz in 2003. They play in the third tier of Austrian
football and are coached by Tomislav Kocijan, a 41-year-old former striker
with SK Sturm Graz.

Last season was a succesful one for the red and whites as they earned
promotion. Previously, their best-ever league campaign came in 1984/85 when
they just missed out on promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga after finishing
runners-up. In 1992/93, again as a second-division side, they reached the
quarter-finals of the Austrian Cup before losing 2-0 to SK Rapid Vienna.

Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen enjoyed a successful 2008/09 season, beating Bayer Leverkusen
to win the German Cup and reaching the final UEFA Cup final before going
down to Ukranians Shakhtar Donetsk.

At domestic level, Werder finished tenth in the Bundesliga under
long-serving coach Tomas Schaaf. Bremen's squad contains a host of
well-known players including Germany defenders Clemens Fritz and Per
Mertesacker, playmaker Torsten Frings and Under-21 star Mesut Ozil, as well
as Sweden striker Marcus Rosenberg and Portugal forward Hugo Almeida.

Bursaspor

Bursaspor, from the Turkish city of Bursa, finished their 2008/09 campaign
sixth in the Turkcell Superlig. Formed in 1963, the club lifted the Turkish
Cup in 1986 and has been coached in the past by former West Ham player Ralph
Milne and Romania legend Gheorghe Hagi.

Coached by Ibrahim Yazici, Bursaspor's squad is made up almost exclusively
of Turkish players, including wonderkid Sercan Yildrim. Bulgaria goalkeeper
Dimitar Ivankov, South Korea forward Shin Young-Rok and Brazilian striker
Tadeu add international flavour.

ND Mura 05

Coached by Slobodan Djuric, Nogometno Drustvo Mura 05 hail from the
Slovenian town of Murska Sobota. The town is situated on the banks of the
river Mura in the north west of the country, hence the club's name.

ND Mura 05 was formed in 2005 following the demise of the town's former
Slovenian 1.SNL Liga club NK Mura earlier the same year. In their previous
guise, Mura lifted the Slovenian Cup in 1995.

Peter Kurucz has set his sights on appearing in the Barclays Premier League
after signing a long-term contract with West Ham United. The Hungary
Under-21 goalkeeper, who initially joined the Hammers on loan from Ujpest FC
in February 2009, has formally put pen to paper this week on a permanent
contract until the summer of 2013 after the deal was finalised and announced
last month. Kurucz, who is 6'4 tall, made his competitive debut for West Ham
in the 2-0 Barclays Premier Reserve League South defeat by Aston Villa on 17
March, going on to make five reserve appearances in total. The youngster's
impressive form was rewarded with a place among the substitutes for the
Premier League trip to Everton on 16 May. Now, the 21-year-old is aiming to
impress manager Gianfranco Zola and push No1 Robert Green for a first-team
place.
"I am very happy to sign for four years. I think it's very good," said
Kurucz. "It's good for me to be at West Ham. I was at Ujpest before and came
to England in February.
"I played five or six matches in the reserves last season and enjoyed
working with Ludek, who is a very good goalkeeping coach, and also Greeny.
"I hope I will play in the Premier League this season but I think I will
play more regularly in the reserve team."
Having previously appeared for Hungary's U21 side, Budapest-born Kurucz, who
has spent the summer becoming more familiar with London, has also set his
sights on one day earning a senior international cap for his country. "That
would be good. I don't know about the full national team yet but at the
moment I hope to be in the Under-21s," he added. Kurucz is one of a host of
promising goalkeepers at the club, with Czech Republic U21 Marek Stech,
Canada U20 Adam Street and Turkey U17 Deniz Mehmet all showing great
potential.

Nigel Quashie has been speaking about his immediate future - and insists
that he'd be happy to see out his contract with the Hammers. Quashie, signed
from West Brom in January 2007 for £1.5million has another year of his
three-and-a-half year deal to run and despite having not featured for the
first team since March 2007 insists that he'd be happy to remain in London.
However he also refused to rule out a move - adding that regular first-team
football was his priority. "All I want to do is play football really,
whether that is at West Ham or if something materialises at another club,"
he said. "It will be good for me to get back to giving 100 per cent on the
pitch for a football club again. "West Ham have been great with me whilst
I've been on the sidelines and it will obviously be up to them whether I
remain at Upton Park or not. I'm back at West Ham now and starting to get
back into the thick of things with the boys. "I've got another year left on
my deal here and it's all about my desire to play regularly now really
because I need to be playing. I've been playing for 14 years now and I'm
approaching the age of 31, so I need to be playing regularly. "If I need to
go out on loan again to do so, or even move somewhere permanently then so be
it because the main thing for me is to be playing football."

Former West Ham youth star Chris Coyne has returned to Australia after 13
years in England. 30-year-old Coyne, who was released recently by League One
outfit Colchester United has signed a three-year deal with Perth Glory. The
deal is being viewed as a major coup down under, with Perth owner Tony Sage
stating:

"Chris has seen what we've set in motion here and the high standard of
players we've brought together at the club. Quality attracts quality and we
are delighted to add another player with the experience and skill that Chris
possesses. The Perth Glory revival is well and truly on the march."

Centre-half Coyne arrived in England as a 17-year-old and was part of the
title-winning Hammers youth team of 1995/96 which included the likes of
Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand. He also featured in the 1995/96 FA Youth
Cup final which saw the Hammers beaten 4-1 by a Liverpool team featuring
Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher.

Despite having impressed initially Coyne failed to push on and following
just one first team appearance for Harry Redknapp he signed for Dundee on a
free transfer.

After just one season in Scotland (2000/01), Coyne was brought back to
England by Luton Town for whom he played for the next seven years. However
administration forced a £350,000 sale to Colchester in 2008, for whom Coyne
was named captain.

However his final season in English football was to end in disappointment as
Colchester were relegated from the Championship at the end of Coyne's first
season at the CCS.

Where are they now? The class of 96

Neill Finn: Goalkeeper Finn went on to become the then youngest player to
feature in the Premiership when he played at Manchester City aged just 17.
After being released by the Hammers, Finn spent time with Dorchester Town
before disappearing from the game. He returned to play for non-league
Romford in 2004.

Rio Ferdinand: Unsurprisingly went on to become England's finest defender of
his generation. Surprisingly overlooked as the latest England captain.

David Partridge: Centre-half Partridge never featured for United's first
team and spent time at Dundee Utd, Orient, Motherwell, Bristol City and
Brentford before moving to Ireland to play for St Patrick's Athletic where
he is expected to line up against next season. Also featured seven times for
Wales.

Jason Moore: Made one substitute appearance for the Hammers before being
released a year later. Unheard of since.

Emmanuel Omoyinmi: Former English schoolboy Omoyinmi will mostly be
remembered for his brief appearance as a substitute in the void League Cup
quarter final with Aston Villa which cost the Hammers a semi-final berth due
to his appearance for Gillingham in the same competition whilst on loan
earlier that season. 'Mannygate' put an end to Omoyinmi's career with the
Hammers but he went on to play for no less than 11 more clubs before
retiring at the end of the 2006/07 season.

Frank Lampard: Got fat, got taunted, got slim again and won a few medals
with Chelsea. The second best Lampard to play for West Ham.

Anthony McFarlane: McFarlene's playing career was cut short by injury and he
was forced to retire from the game in 1998. Has worked as a Licensed
Player's Agent for several years.

Joe Keith: Joe was another who failed to make an appearnce for West Ham
United's first team and signed for Colchester in 1999. After six years and
over 230 appearances for the U's he joined Orient before moving to Brentford
two years later. However he was relased just four months later and dropped
out of the pro ranks. Featured for Hornchurch before joining current club
Tilbury.

Lee Boylan: Witham-born Boylan made just one apparance for the first team,
that coming as an 89th minute substitute against Sheffield Wednesday in
1997. Having been released by West Ham in 1999 the striker enjoyed short
spells will Trelleborg (Sweden), Exeter, Hayes and Stevenage before joining
Canvey Island where he starred for five years between 2001-2006. A season at
Grays was followed by another year at Cambridge Utd; now with Stevenage
Borough (his 12th club).

Lee Hodges: Midfielder Hodges featured three times under Harry Redknapp
before being released in 1999 having spent time on loan at Exter, Orient,
Plymouth, Ipswich and Southend. He spent three years at Scunthorpe before
enjoying spells with Rochdale, Bristol Rovers, Thuroock, Billericay and
Hornchurch, for whom he featured last season.

Hungary Under 21 international goalkeeper Peter Kurucz is hoping to be
Robert Green's back-up at West Ham this season. The Hammers were hoping to
make Southampton keeper Kelvin Davis deputy to Green, but he rejected the
chance by penning a new Saints deal. 21-year-old shot-stopper Lurucz is now
a permanent member of Gianfranco Zola's squad after signing a four-year deal
this summer after initially joining on loan. Kurucz made a handful of
appearances for West Ham's reserves last season and he is looking forward to
learning and improving as a player during his time in East London. The
keeper is targeting first-team football in the long-run, but accepts he is
likely to continue his education in West Ham's reserves this season. "I
played five or six matches in the reserves last season and enjoyed working
with Ludek [Miklosko], who is a very good goalkeeping coach, and also
Greeny," he told the club's official website. "I hope I will play in the
Premier League this season, but I think I will play more regularly in the
reserve team."
Meanwhile, Kurucz is looking forward to the team's pre-season tour of China,
insisting it is vital the team bond while in the Far East. "I am looking
forward to the pre-season camp and it should be very good for us," he
continued. "It is an important part of the season and it will be good to get
everyone together and preparing in the right way. "We are determined to
improve next season and this will help us a lot."

Billy Bonds (1967-88)

While Trevor Brooking was the flair player in the West Ham midfield, Bonds
sat alongside him and proved to be the perfect foil with his tough tackling
and strength. Bonds played an incredible 793 appearances for the Irons,
which included one run of 124 consecutive matches. He was awarded the
captaincy following Bobby Moore's departure in 1974, and had immediate
success, captaining the club to the 1975 FA Cup and the 1976 Cup Winners'
Cup Final. Bonds dropped back to defence in the late 70s and captained the
club to one more FA Cup final victory. He was won the Hammer of the Year
award four times.

Trevor Brooking (1967-84)

Brooking won two FA Cups with the Irons, scoring a headed winner against
Arsenal in 1980, which is funny, because Brooking he didn't score many
headers, as he never tires of telling us. Trev was never a player to get
involved in the physical aspect of the game, being most at ease with the
ball at his feet, scoring 102 goals in 636 appearances. He won Hammer of the
Year award on five occasions.

Paolo Di Canio (1999-03)

The Italian arrived at Upton Park under a cloud of shame after shoving over
referee Paul Alcock while playing for Sheffield Wednesday. He soon re-built
his career and became one of the most popular players in the country. He had
outrageous skill and flair and was the sort of player that you could not
take your eyes off him. In 2000 he scored a spectacular scissor kick volley
against Wimbledon which won the goal of the season and was probably the
greatest goal in Premier League history. He won the Hammer of the Year award
in his first full season at the club.

Julian Dicks (1988-93, 94-98)

If you were to stereotype an east-end hard man, you would get Julian Dicks,
even though he was born in Bristol. He was nicknamed 'The Terminator' for
his tough tackling ways, which usually led to him getting in trouble as his
eight red cards and 112 bookings would testify to. But when his left foot
wasn't kicking people, it was scoring goals. For a left-back he scored an
incredible 61 goals, mainly free-kicks and penalties, and lies 17 on the
all-time list of West Ham scorers. He played 315 times for the Irons,
winning the Hammer of the Year award four times.

Sir Geoff Hurst (1959-72)

Hurst of course scored three goals in the 1966 World Cup Final, which means
that he is guaranteed television face time at every England home
international and on every unsuccessful English World Cup bid. His first
Wembley goal was an equaliser in the Hammers' 1964 FA Cup final win. He then
added the 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup medal to his collection. He was
successfully converted into a forward by Ron Greenwood, scoring 252 goals in
502 matches. He won the Hammer of the Year award on three occasions.

Alvin Martin (1977-96)

Martin was the scouser who the cockneys took to their heart. In the 80s,
'Stretch' partnered Bonds in the centre of the Irons defence and he picked
up an FA Cup winners' medal in 1980. In April 1986, Martin achieved the rare
feat of scoring a hat-trick against three different Newcastle United
goalkeepers. He amassed 496 appearances for the Irons, winning the Hammer of
the Year award on three occasions.

Bobby Moore (1958-74)

Moore's ability to read the game, time tackles and marshal his defence made
him a world class defender and captain. In 1964 he successfully battled
testicular cancer while leading West Ham to victory to FA Cup victory over
Preston. That year, he was also named the Footballer of the Year and was
awarded the England captaincy. The following year, his West Ham team beat
1860 Munich in the European Cup Winners' Cup. He won the Hammer of the Year
Award on four occasions.

Phil Parkes (1979-90)

Parkes became the most expensive goalkeeper ever when John Lyall brought him
to Upton Park for a fee of £500,000. The money was well worth it and Parkes
was the Irons' number one for ten seasons. He kept a clean sheet in the 1980
FA Cup final in the Irons' 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Parkes lies 13 in the
all-time West Ham appearance record, picking up the Hammer of the Year award
in 1981.

Honourable mentions: Joe Cole, Tony Cottee, Alan Devonshire, Frank
McAvennie, Ludek Miklosko, Martin Peters, Steve Potts, Ray Stewart, Carlos
Tevez, Vic Watson.

How can it not be Bobby Moore? He captained both his club and country
through their most succesful eras, and is the only West Ham player to have
his shirt number retired by the club. For his silky skills, Trevor Brooking

Manchester City's joy at getting one over their neighbourly rivals
Manchester United will have to wait a little bit longer, after a deal for
ex-West Ham United loan star Carlos Tevez was delayed by the player's
complicated third party ownership. A Premier League spokesman told the
Manchester Evening News: "Carlos Tevez's relationship with United was the
last of its kind in the Premier League." "There was a third-party issue, and
whoever buys him now will have to buy out that third-party interest."
Chelsea are reportedly also interested in the player, however the
25-year-old is expected to sign for City by the end of next week.

year was very positive for me and for my life in general. It has been
fantastic. It is strange because one year ago was so different. When you

"Now I feel better. Also, apart from the football, outside I know the city

Tony Gale is hoping Luis Jimenez can thrill West Ham United's fans in the
same way fellow South American Carlos Tevez did three seasons ago. Argentina
forward Tevez became a cult hero during the 2006/07 campaign, ending the
season by being voted Hammer of the Year. Fast forward to 2009/10 and West
Ham have brought in another exciting prospect in Chile forward Jimenez, who
has joined the Hammers on a season-long loan from Italian champions
Internazionale. While Gale does not want to place any unwanted pressure on
the 25-year-old, he believes Jimenez could prove to be a shrewd capture for
manager Gianfranco Zola. "It's important for the fans to have new signings
to look and Luis Jimenez is certainly one of them," said Gale. "From all the
sources that I've spoken to at Sky and at the club, he's an excellent
player. "He can play up-front, in the hole or in any of the roles in
midfield that Gianfranco and Steve Clarke want to play him. He will be a
very good signing. "Tevez was excellent when he was here and he will always
be a hero at Upton Park, especially when you consider he was only here for a
short space of time. He didn't even play a full season, and was only a
regular in the run-in. "It was a joy watching Carlos when he was at his
best."
While Jimenez is a welcome addition, Gale is also pleased to see a number of
the club's injured players returning to action. Wales defender Danny
Gabbidon is back after 18 months on the sidelines, while England midfielder
Kieron Dyer is in full training after missing the tail-end of last season
with a hamstring strain. Both could feature in Saturday's opening pre-season
friendly at Grays Athletic - a fixture being attended by Gale and fellow
ex-Hammers Tony Cottee, Alan Devonshire, Steve Lomas and Don Hutchison, as
well as new Grays chairman John Moncur. "There will be more [new signings],
there's no doubt about that, but I'm also excited about seeing some of the
injured players coming back - Danny Gabbidon and Kieron Dyer - because they
are class players who will add to what is a very good squad," said Gale.
"I'm really hopeful ahead of the new season and Jimenez makes it even
better, and there will be some more coming. The likes of Savio, who needed a
bit of bedding in and acclimatisation to living in a different country, I
believe we could see more from next season."

Sir Trevor Brooking is to be inducted into the National Football Museum Hall
of Fame

West Ham United legend Sir Trevor Brooking is to be inducted into the
National Football Museum Hall of Fame. Brooking famously scored the Hammers'
winning goal in the 1980 FA Cup final, making a total of 635 first-team
appearances for the only professional club he represented during a
glittering 19-year career. The former England midfielder, now 60, was
delighted to be honoured alongside 1966 FIFA World Cup winner George Cohen,
former Hammers and England forward Teddy Sheringham, Arsenal legends Cliff
Bastin and Frank McLintock, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ossie Ardiles,
Sunderland great Len Shackleton and Arsenal and England Ladies star Marianne
Spacey.
The eight inductees join such luminaries of the game as World Cup heroes Sir
Geoff Hurst, Bobby Moore OBE and Martin Peters, as well as former Hammer
Jimmy Greaves, Manchester United greats George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton
and West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola. "It was a wonderful surprise and great
honour to hear I have been voted into the National Football Museum Hall of
Fame," said Sir Trevor. "To be selected by a panel led by my heroes Sir
Bobby Charlton and Sir Tom Finney is very special. I am particularly
delighted to be joining my West Ham team-mates Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst
and Martin Peters along with England team-mate Kevin Keegan in the Hall of
Fame."
Brooking was chosen to be inducted by a special panel including Sir Alex
Ferguson, Gary Lineker and Professional Footballers Association Chief
Executive Gordon Taylor. He will be honoured at a special ceremony in
central London in September. A true 'one-club man', Brooking signed for West
Ham United as an apprentice in July 1965, playing his final first-team game
in May 1984. A modern midfield player, Brooking was born in Barking on 2
October 1948, growing up as a West Ham supporter and joining the club
straight from Ilford County High School. An England Youth international, he
made his senior debut for the Hammers in a 3-3 Division One draw at Burnley
on 29 August 1967. Brooking's most famous moment in a West Ham shirt came on
10 May 1980, when he stooped to head the only goal of the game as Arsenal
were beaten 1-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley. The winner would earn
Brooking a second winner's medal following the Hammers' victory over Fulham
in 1975. At international level, Brooking won 47 caps for England, scoring
five goals and appearing at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Following his
retirement, Brooking joined the BBC as a pundit before returning to the
Boleyn Ground in 2003 as caretaker manager, losing just one of his 14
matches in charge. Away from West Ham, Brooking has become an important
figure in sports administration, chairing the Eastern Region Council for
Sport and Recreation and later Sport England. In December 2003, he was
appointed as the Football Association's Director of Football Development.
The following year, 2004, he was knighted for his services to sport.

Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis has been explaining the reasons behind
his decision to reject the opportunity to move to West Ham. The 32-year-old
Saints skipper had looked like moving to London where he would have
effectively replaced Jan Lastukva as Rob Green's understudy, after he agreed
terms with United. However a late change of circumstances at the League One
club - the takeover led by Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr giving the
cash-stricken club a vital injection of funds. "The decision for me was
between the opportunity of first-team football at Southampton or the chance
to play Premier League football and I have made my choice to stay at
Southampton," explained Davis. "After speaking to Gianfranco Zola and Ludek
Miklosko at West Ham, they were both very understanding of my position and I
hold them both with the utmost respect. "I got the call yesterday and the
new people at Southampton were quick to offer me a new contract and were
very clear in what they want to achieve for the football club. "I always
said from the end of last season that League One football does not scare me
and I obviously feel as responsible as anyone for the club's position."
Davis, who had spent a couple of days at Chadwell Heath training with the
Hammers is set to retain the captaincy that he would have relinquished had
he moved to London.
As a result of Davis' about-turn West Ham will now consider fast-tracking
either Marek Stech or new signing Peter Kurucz to understudy Rob Green, who
has not missed a Premier League game in over two seasons.

Balint Bajner has returned to Hungary having failed to impress at West Ham.
The 18-year-old striker, who began his career with FC Sopron before joining
Liberty moved to London last July as one of several young foreign imports
and went on to score a number of goals for Tony Carr's youth team, including
a brace against Crystal Palace back in March. However the youngster was
deemed not to have done enough to earn a further year at the Academy and has
already returned home to parent club Liberty Oradea; something confirmed by
Carr who told whufc.com: "Balint's loan period ended at the end of last
season and we decided not to take that further. We wish him well in the
future."
West Ham appeared to have achieved something of a coup by landing Bajner,
who was interesting a number of Italian clubs at the time. At the time of
his signing, the Hungarian under-19 international said: "I was on trial at
Lazio and Inter Milan but I had the chance to go to West Ham. The atmosphere
and conditions were great at all the places, but English football had the
biggest affect on me."
However having failed to impress in East London, it's back to square one for
Bajner.

West Ham have announced the signing of young centre half Jack Lampe.
17-year-old Lampe becomes the latest youngster to be drafted into the Tony
Carr's Academy after signing a 12-month pro contract with the Hammers. The
Cheshunt-born defender - who signs from Ryman League outfit Harlow Town
having impressed during a recent trial - told whufc.com: "Joining West Ham
is a dream come true. I've always wanted to be in an Academy playing with
good players and to a good standard. "Now, I hope to become a regular in the
reserves this season and earn another contract. I can't wait to start
working at West Ham. The move has come about quite quickly and I can't wait
to get going."
Academy boss Carr added: "Jack impressed during a trial period during the
end of last season and we decided to offer him a contract. "We hope to
develop him further to see how far his talent could take him. He looked
composed and as if he had played at that level before and we felt it was
worth giving him a season to see what he can do."
Lampe will now challenge the likes of Bondz N'Gala and Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson
for a spot in Alex Dyer's reserve side next season.

Midfielder only focused on securing regular playing time

West Ham United midfielder Nigel Quashie insists he has not received an
approach from Championship outfit Cardiff City. The former Scotland
international has struggled with injury in recent years after breaking his
foot against Tottenham in March 2007, but he made a return to football last
season with successful loan spells at both Birmingham and Wolves. The
30-year-old has one year left on his current deal at Upton Park and he told
skysports.com that he does not mind where his future lies as long as he is
given the chance to play regular football. He said: "I've not been
concerning myself with those stories really because I'm focused on getting a
good pre-season under my belt, but I have heard the speculation flying
around about that. "All I want to do is play football really, whether that
is at West Ham or if something materialises at either Cardiff or another
club then it will be good for me to get back to giving 100 per cent on the
pitch for a football club again. "West Ham have been great with me whilst
I've been on the sidelines and it will obviously be up to them whether I
remain at Upton Park or not."
The former Southampton and Nottingham Forest man has begun pre-season
training with the Hammers and, following his injury nightmare, is keen to
play as long as his body allows him to. He added: "Last season was all about
getting fit again really and the loan spells I had with both Birmingham City
and Wolves helped me to do that.
"That worked well for me, but I'm back at West Ham now and starting to get
back into the thick of things with the boys. "I've got another year left on
my deal here and it's all about my desire to play regularly now really
because I need to be playing. "I've been playing for 14 years now and I'm
approaching the age of 31, so I need to be playing regularly. "If I need to
go out on loan again to do so, or even move somewhere permanently then so be
it because the main thing for me is to be playing football."

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis admits following up an enquiry for West Ham
United striker Dean Ashton is currently at the 'back of his mind'. Potters
chairman Peter Coates revealed last month that former Crewe forward Ashton
was among Pulis' summer transfer targets. Pulis confirmed he has shown an
interest in Ashton, who has struggled with injuries during the past two
seasons. However, he admits that he has been enquiring about a host of
players as he seeks the right signings to add to his squad for the new
campaign. "It's one of many enquiries we've made," Pulis told Sky Sports
News. "I think the situation is the same with most clubs. You enquire about
what's out there and what's not, and then you take a view, and we've taken a
view on about 15 players. "You just wait and see what comes up and what
doesn't come up. It changes every day. "Other clubs go out and buy players,
and certain players then become available and certain players drop off the
radar for all sorts of reasons - whether they are too expensive, whether you
are worried about them settling into your football club and whether the
value of the player is too much for what you can afford and what you can do.
"There's all different situations that you come across and you have to make
sure the players are right for your football club."
Expanding on Ashton, he added: "We've made an enquiry and I think, at the
moment, that's at the back of our minds as there are other things going on
that are more relevant and that could happen a lot quicker."
Benjani Mwaruwari is another forward to have been linked with a move to the
Britannia Stadium, but Pulis did not confirm any interest in the Manchester
City man. He said: "You can ask about 15, 16 players that we've spoken to
other clubs about or we've enquired about."

Kelvin Davis has rejected an approach from West Ham in favour of signing a
new three-year deal with Southampton. The out-of-contract goalkeeper was
expected to sign for the Hammers after spending the last few days training
with Gianfranco Zola's side. However as soon as Swiss businessman Markus
Liebherr completed his takeover of the South Coast club on Wednesday he made
sure he offered Davis, who was Saints' player of the year last term, a new
contract. To the delight of everyone at Southampton, the 32-year-old opted
for regular first-team football in League One over warming the bench as
understudy to Robert Green at Upton Park. "The decision for me was between
the opportunity of first-team football at Southampton or the chance to play

Premier League side West Ham United have kept their word by lining-up a
strong squad for Sunday's pre-season friendly at Blue Square Premier Grays
Athletic (3pm).
The Irons' travelling party includes their top summer signing Luis Jimenez,
who has arrived at Upton Park on a season-long loan from Inter Milan. Other
top names who could be in action include England striker Dean Ashton, who
missed most of last season through injury.

The full squad is: Peter Kurucz, Marek Stech, Danny Gabbidon, James Collins,

Three English soccer clubs are set for a lucrative pre-season as tickets go
on sale for the Barclays Asia Cup. Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Hull City
will travel to China to compete in the tournament. With each ticket for the
four-team, two-day competition in Beijing priced at US$55, the event can
expect to make almost US$3 million in basic ticketing revenue, guaranteeing
significant appearance fees for the three Premier League clubs and their
hosts, Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan. The three clubs'
participation in the competition, held as part of the Beijing International
Football Festival, has been hailed by the director of the Beijing Football
Association as a chance to make Beijing "the capital of Asian football".
Spurs, meanwhile, will receive another pre-season cash injection due to
their participation in the Wembley Cup, which will also feature Scottish
giants Celtic, European champions Barcelona and Egyptian club Al Ahly.

The competitions are more evidence of an increasing trend that has seen
pre-season matches, formerly used merely as training exercises to boost
players' fitness ahead of the new season, develop into lucrative commercial
exhibitions. Spurs' fierce local rivals, Arsenal, host the Emirates Cup,
which will see Paris St Germain, Rangers and Atletico Madrid visit north
London in August. Premier League champions Manchester United, meanwhile,
will travel to Germany, where Bayern Munich will also welcome Boca Juniors

Sir Trevor Brooking, the former West Ham and England midfielder, has been
inducted into the National Football museum Hall of Fame.

Brooking, 60, joins fellow former West Ham players such as Bobby Moore, Sir
Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Jimmy Greaves and Teddy Sheringham, along with
George Cohen, Cliff Bastin, Frank McLintock, Ossie Ardiles, George Best and
Gianfranco Zola. Sir Trevor said: "It was a wonderful surprise and a great
honour to hear I have been voted into the National Football museum Hall of
Fame. Sir Trevor Brooking heads for the exit at the Football Association"To
be selected by a panel led buy my heroes Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Tom
Finney is very special. I am particularly delighted to be joining my West
Ham team-mates Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, along with
England team-mate Kevin Keegan."

Keegan was chosen by a panel that also included Gary Lineker and PFA chief
executive Gordon Taylor. Brooking grew up as a West Ham supporter and after
leaving Ilford County High School moved to Upton Park where he went on to
make 635 first team appearances in a 19-year spell. Brooking, who has acted
as caretaker manager at West Ham, won 47 caps for England and is now the
Football Association's Director of Football Development.

experienced players, they have turned to the Essex-based Ryman League club
to sign Lampe, a 17-year-old defender, on a one-year contract. The teenager

Spurs to fail in Joe Cole bid

Joe Cole is set to sign a new deal with Chelsea - ending Tottenham Hotspur's
audacious bid for the midfielder. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp - who managed
Cole at West Ham - had been hopeful of luring the player to White Hart Lane,
reports today's Evening Standard. Redknapp had been hoping to tempt Cole
with the promise of guaranteed first-team football and the key role in the
Spurs midfield. Redknapp's hopes were raised when Cole was told by Chelsea
to wait until this summer for contract extension talks, even though his deal
runs out next year. But the Blues are ready to offer Cole a new four-year
deal. Cole missed much of last season with a knee injury but has been taking
part in pre-season training, yet is unlikely to be fully fit for the start
of the season.

Lee Bowyer: I feel right at home at Birmingham City

BLUES' new signing Lee Bowyer said he felt comfortable in his Blues
surroundings, which partly explains why he chose to join them on a free
transfer from West Ham United. Bowyer, who spent five months on loan at St
Andrew's last season, was courted by other clubs. "Basically, everybody was
so nice to me when I was here," the Londoner said, outlining his reasons for
opting for Alex McLeish's outfit. "The club has gone into the Premier
League, which is where I want to play, and it's a new challenge for myself.
"Birmingham are moving in the right direction. Everybody I came across, they
were driving to be in the Premier League. "Yes, there was interest
elsewhere. Like I said, I enjoyed my time here, everybody made me feel
welcome and it's not too far from home, so everything seemed right. "The
manager and players were really good to me, so were the fans. It was all
nice, and it helps when you know people like you." "I thought that we did
well to get promotion, and we deserved it," Bowyer added. "Over the season
that tells, who does and who doesn't deserve to go up. "Everything was good
and I just wanted to stay here and be part of the challenge in the Premier
League."
