Academy aces impress Noble - WHUFC
Mark Noble knows what it takes to make the jump from the youth team to the
senior set-up at the Boleyn Ground
19.02.2008

Mark Noble may be the youngest regular in the West Ham United first team but
he believes it will not be a long before one or two of the club's talented
teens take that mantle.

The midfielder has been impressed in recent weeks with the likes of James
Tomkins, Jack Collison and Freddie Sears. All three have shown up well while
training and travelling with the senior squad. It is easy to forget that
Noble himself is only 20 such is the maturity of his displays this season
while Alan Curbishley has also shown faith in Anton Ferdinand, 23 yesterday,
and Jonathan Spector who only turns 22 with the visit of Chelsea on 1 March.

With Carlton Cole and Dean Ashton still only 24 themselves, there is a
youthful feel to the matchday 16, but Noble believes reserve-team captain
Collison will soon get the chance to add to his first-team experience. "He
is a fantastic player and a really nice kid as well. He handles himself
well, gets on with everyone and is well liked. He is great in training every
day with us, he is definitely one for the future."

Collison, 19, made his senior debut away to Arsenal on New Year's Day, a
match when central defender Tomkins, 18, also figured in the matchday 16 for
the first time. "I rate Tomks highly," added Noble, who said it was harder
for defenders to come through given the fact some of the best attacking
players in the world are on view in the Premier League. That said, he has
faith in his young colleague. "He is a clever centre-back who can pass, who
can head - who can do everything."

The duo have been regulars around the first team since the turn of the year
and Noble is convinced both will blossom when the time is right. He
explained: "I am sure it is just a case of putting them in. As with me, you
get chucked in and the adrenalin and the nerves kick in. You do things you
don't expect you can do. They are just waiting for their chances and I am
sure they are both going to be fantastic for this club in the future."

Another name on the horizon is prolific scorer Sears - who has 20 goals in
16 games for the U18s this season and has begun to establish himself
alongside Tomkins at England Under-19 level. Noble described getting a
recent glimpse of the 18-year-old forward in action during a training ground
match. "All the first team was watching and he was head and shoulders above
the rest. He is quick, he can finish and he has got a little bit of
arrogance about him as well. We have got some bright youngsters coming
through."

Ferdinand fired up for Fulham - WHUFC
Anton Ferdinand is looking forward to 3pm on Saturday when West Ham United
get back to league business
19.02.2008

Anton Ferdinand cannot wait to get back in action for West Ham United when
they go to Fulham this coming Saturday.

The in-form defender scored the winning goal in spectacular fashion when the
two sides met in a keenly-fought contest at the Boleyn Ground last month
and, after a weekend off, he is eager to take to the field again. "I can't
wait to get back to playing," he said. "The game on Saturday is what you
train all week for."

Despite his hunger, the free weekend just gone has meant a welcome chance
for the squad to "recharge" and Ferdinand expects the return to business at
the training ground will see everyone "firing on all cylinders". As was
shown in the 2-1 win against Fulham on 12 January, it will be another tricky
encounter - not least because the club are once again up against a team
fighting for top-flight status.

"Every game in the Premier League is tough," he said, mindful as well of the
disappointing last two outings against Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City.
"There is not an easy game in this division." Reflecting specifically on the
1-1 home draw with Birmingham, Ferdinand was aware the team did not do
enough in the attacking third to claim the three points. "That is just the
way football is sometimes you know," he added.

That said, the centre-back is confident the defensive base is still there
for the team to push on. "As long as we as a backline keep doing our job, we
have a chance. That is what we get paid to do and that is what we have got
to do." The rearguard will be confident of standing firm at Craven Cottage
having seen only ten goals conceded on the club's league travels this
season, a mark bettered by only Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Ferdinand is certainly expecting another memorable afternoon, at least in
terms of the travelling support. "The away fans are quality you know. It is
a London derby, which is always enjoyable. The atmosphere is always good and
they are definitely games that I personally look forward to. There is always
going to be a crunching tackle or something to set it off."

Having turned 23 yesterday, Ferdinand is happy when in the spotlight on the
football pitch and with the weight of expectancy on his shoulders. "The big
atmosphere is when I can show what I can do," he added. "All I want to do is
keep turning in performances for West Ham United and hopefully I will keep
on doing that."

If he maintains his club form, he may also find himself getting the chance
to follow Matthew Upson into the international fold. "It is definitely in my
mind. I am too old to play for the Under-21s now. The next step is the
senior squad but all I can do is turn in performances for West Ham and that
is what I am going to continue to do. I am just going to concentrate on
doing that. If I do get the call, then great. If I don't, then so be it."

Bellamy news confirmed - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 19th February 2008
By: Staff Writer

West Ham United have confirmed that Craig Bellamy will require further
surgery - as revealed on KUMB.com earlier this month. A fortnight ago we
revealed that Bellamy was set to undergo an op to cure abdominal problems
which once again flared up following the striker's cameo against Wigan.
The club confirmed the news yesterday when, in a piece regarding the return
to fitness of fellow striker Bobby Zamora, head physio George Cooper said:
"There is a feeling that if he [Bellamy] carries on with slight symptoms
they are likely to get worse rather than better. The symptoms have to go.
"The operation will complement the excellent work he has done before and
that should be the last bit he needs before continuing his strengthening."
Bellamy - who cost the Hammers £7.5 million last summer - has made just a
dozen performances this season.

Ferdinand's thoughts turn to England - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 19th February 2008
By: Staff Writer

Anton Ferdinand says that he hopes to follow his brother's footsteps by
being called up to Fabio Capello's England squad. 22-year-old Ferdinand has
been enjoying good form since returning to the West Ham United first team
following a turbulent year which saw him castigated for flying to America in
order to attend a friend's birthday party (under the pretence of being with
a sick relative) then land a spell in court for a club fracas in which he
was later acquitted.
But with all his troubled hopefully behind him, the new mature Ferdinand
says that his immediate aim is to emulate his brother by making one of
Capello's forthcoming squads. "It is definitely in my mind," he told
whufc.com. "I am too old to play for the Under-21s now so the next step is
the senior squad. "All I can do is turn in performances for West Ham and
that is what I am going to continue to do. I am just going to concentrate on
doing that. "If I do get the call, then great. If I don't, then so be it."
Ferdinand's next chance to impress comes this weekend as the Hammers take on
Fulham, their third successive match against a team battling relegation in
succession. Hammers fans will be hoping for a better result than the last
two which saw the team yield just one point from the fixtures against Wigan
and Birmingham.

More surgery for Bellamy - SSN
More bad news for Welsh star
By Graeme Bailey Last updated: 19th February 2008

Craig Bellamy's return to first-team football has been delayed further after
news that he needs more surgery on his abdominal injury. The Wales
international played in a friendly at the start of the month, but the club
have now revealed that he needs to go under the knife again. Bellamy
originally had surgery in October and although the latest operation is only
likely to sideline him for a further six weeks, it is a blow as The Hammers
had hoped he would now be back in contention for the first team. West Ham
confirmed the news after Bellamy felt he was not 'quite right' after his
comeback earlier in the month. Hammers physio George Cooper remained buoyant
about Bellamy's recovery. "He has been absolutely brilliant," added Cooper.
"Everything he has done has got him back to almost being ready and there is
a feeling that if he carries on with slight symptoms they are likely to get
worse rather than better. The symptoms have to go. "The operation will
complement the excellent work he has done before and that should be the last
bit he needs before continuing his strengthening."
There was better news for the Hammers with Bobby Zamora back in full
training along with Julien Faubert and Nolberto Solano. "He is strong as an
ox now," Cooper said of Zamora. "His legs are really good and he is in good
nick. Bobby is always in early, has been working very hard and been very
patient. "It looks to have paid off. His running fitness is as good as
anybody's at the club, if not better." Of their other injured stars, Scott
Parker could be back running within a month following his knee issues and
Kieron Dyer has begun light training following his broken leg earlier this
season.

Reasons Why West Ham Didn't Buy During The Window - West Ham Fans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 19 February, 2008 - 20:09.

Despite the news that Craig Bellamy is probably ruled out for the rest of
the season, West Ham United owner and chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is
happy with the clubs procurement policy. Next year his son, Thor, is due to
take a much more 'hands on' role, and as he is ten times wealthier than his
old man, he might make the difference between Championship aspirations and
Champions league! Gudmundsson has been careful to shield his son from the
flack connected with the Tevez and Mascherano transfer fiasco.
To this purpose the chairman took note of the advice that he was given by
friends at the Icelandic FA, he was told that the impending English FA
investigations in to all current transfers was something to be avoided and
as such any transfer activity during the January window would be subject to
intense scrutiny and more importantly might have led to the re-opening of
investigations into the Argentine duo's transfers. What ever the merits of
his decision, fans should appreciate that Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson and his
family are in it for the long haul, and unlike the Glazers and the Pool
yanks, have not taken out loans to fulfil their ambitions! - Ed

There are so few good England players, I had to recall 37-year-old James,
admits Capello - Daily Mail
Last updated at 11:17am on 19th February 2008

England boss Fabio Capello has admitted the number of foreign players in the
Barclays Premier League has meant "the pool is reduced" when it comes to
squad selection. Capello is likely to call up Manchester City youngster Joe
Hart for the forthcoming friendly against France after citing David James'
recall in goal against Switzerland recently as an example of the lack of
depth in the English game. England play at the Stade de France on March 26
and the Italian's goalkeeping options are limited, with Scott Carson out of
favour following his howler against Croatia in November, Paul Robinson on
the bench at Tottenham and Manchester United's Ben Foster currently injured.
Capello told Rai Radio Anch'io in Italy: "Only 38 per cent of the players
are English.
"The pool is reduced. I have had to reinstate a 37-year-old goalkeeper but I
have spotted one in the Under-21s who is very interesting."

Hammers captain eager to make most of break
By Guardian-series

WEST Ham skipper Lucas Neill believes that the club's weekend break has
allowed the squad to "recharge the batteries". The Irons enjoyed a few days
rest while others battled it out in the FA Cup, and Neill reckons it has
been perfect preparation ahead of their clash with Fulham on Saturday.
Recent results have hampered the club's bid to achieve a UEFA Cup spot. But
the break has offered the likes of Bobby Zamora, Julien Faubert, Nobby
Solano, Scott Parker and Kieron Dyer an opportunity to get closer to full
fitness, which would be a massive boost for Alan Curbishley's ailing squad.
Neill (pictured) said: "The best way to look at it is to start our season
from now. "We have got 13 games left so how many can we win, how far can it
take us. "Let's forget about everything that has happened and hope that we
have got an 80 to 90 per cent fit squad to choose from. "We have lost
opportunities but there is still the chance to strive for fifth or sixth
place."
The Australian full back admitted that he was sorry for the West Ham fans
following the defeat at Wigan and the uninspiring draw with Birmingham at
Upton Park. But he insisted that the results were a mark of the club's
progression from last season, and urged the fans to show patience. "We have
come a long way since last year," Neill said. "As exciting as it was, this
year we are winning games for different reasons and we know that teams are
going to make it really hard for us. "It's a back-handed compliment to us
that teams are going to come and try to frustrate us and as a result we may
not be able to play the freeflowing football we haven't played enough of
this season. "The fans have been fantastic all season and we need them. "We
ask for them to get behind us even in the frustrating time."

Zamora getting closer to return - WHUFC
Bobby Zamora, Julien Faubert and Nolberto Solano are among the increased
options for Alan Curbishley
18.02.2008

West Ham United return to full training this week after a few days' rest
with the likes of Bobby Zamora, Julien Faubert and Nolberto Solano pushing
hard for first-team recalls.

Head physiotherapist George Cooper has been very pleased with Zamora and
Faubert's progress, as demonstrated by their match-winning contributions
over 90 minutes for the reserves in the 4-1 defeat of Birmingham City last
week. Cooper also had positive news on the efforts being made by Scott
Parker and Kieron Dyer, having revealed optimistic news on defenders James
Collins and Calum Davenport last week.

Zamora had not played a whole game since 28 August with a persistent knee
injury that had continued to swell up. Having undergone extensive
rehabilitation with the club's medical staff, he is closing on a first-team
return. "He is strong as an ox now," said Cooper. "His legs are really good
and he is in good nick. Bobby is always in early, has been working very hard
and been very patient. It looks to have paid off. His running fitness is as
good as anybody's at the club, if not better."

The 27-year-old will provide extra competition for a forward line already
boasting Dean Ashton, Henri Camara, Carlton Cole and Luis Boa Morte, with
the latter only missing out on the last reserve game as his wife was giving
birth. Craig Bellamy will be sidelined for some time though as he is due to
have an abdominal strengthening operation to complement the core work he has
been doing as he battles back to fitness - having felt not quite right after
a friendly game on 4 February.

"He has been absolutely brilliant," added Cooper. "Everything he has done
has got him back to almost being ready and there is a feeling that if he
carries on with slight symptoms they are likely to get worse rather than
better. The symptoms have to go. The operation will complement the excellent
work he has done before and that should be the last bit he needs before
continuing his strengthening."

Faubert returned to action with three assists against Birmingham having been
handled carefully in the previous two weeks because of tightness in his
calves, although Cooper stressed he was not injured. He like Solano, who has
recovered from a hamstring problem, is back to full fitness and in
contention for the games to come. Equally positively, the duo could soon be
joined in the battle for midfield places by Parker.

The England international has "totally recovered from his posterior capsule
rupture" with Cooper adding that "we are extremely pleased". The midfielder,
who was hurt in an innocuous challenge against Manchester United on 29
December, a problem unrelated to any previous knee problem, has started his
running programme and could be back in full training in a fortnight.
Elsewhere, Dyer continues to make "excellent progress" from his double leg
break and is also running, although it is too early to set a date on his
return while Danny Gabbidon is being treated for a persistent groin problem.

With several names due to return in due course, Cooper also had a word for
the likes of Matthew Upson and Freddie Ljungberg who have gone from strength
to strength in the first team after putting in plenty of hours at Chadwell
Heath. "Matthew has done really well as we can all see by his progress with
England while Freddie is a massive success story. He is has worked so hard
and is playing well, chasing back and tackling throughout the whole 90
minutes."

Bobby Zamora is expected to lineup for the reserves again this Wednesday as
he continues his rehabilitation process. The Hammers striker notched a
hat-trick in West Ham's 4-1 win over Norwich last week and is likely to
return again for the stiffs this Wednesday night, when Kevin Keen's side
take on Fulham at Bishops Stortford. Zamora stressed last week that he
didn't want to rush his return, although Alan Curbishley will be hoping that
comes sooner rather than later as strike partner Craig Bellamy is almost
certainly out for the rest of the season. The game kicks-off at 7pm; a win
for the Hammers could take them into second spot in the Barclays Premier

Upson honours Moore's memory - Setanta
by Toby Davis, 18 February 2008

Matthew Upson has spoken of his pride at wearing Bobby Moore's famous number
six shirt for West Ham. Next Sunday will be 15 years since the former West
Ham and England legend passed away, and Upson is delighted to be able to
follow in his footsteps. "It's a big honour," he said in West Ham's
matchday programme. "Sometimes I do sit at home and think about it and I get
a little buzz, because it's a big honour." After missing last season's
relegation battle through injury, Upson hopes he can now show the Upton Park
fans what he is capable of. "It's only just beginning at West Ham," he
added. "I want to give some very good years in my career to West Ham and I
feel I am coming into my prime."

West Ham's Noble keen to play catch up
By Guardian-series

MIDFIELDER Mark Noble insists West Ham must make amends for poor recent
results by claiming a much-needed victory at Fulham on Saturday. The Hammers
travel to Craven Cottage for the last of three consecutive games against
sides struggling at the bottom of the Premier League. However, far from
proving fruitful, the Hammers have taken just one point from the run - a 1-0
defeat away at Wigan was followed by a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham -
which has dented the club's bid to break into the top six. "We need to take
the points from these games," said Noble, who was withdrawn in the warm up
from the squad to face Birmingham because of fatigue. "They are the games
that are going to get you in the European places. "Fulham away next is going
to be a tough game. They got an unlikely win against Aston Villa so we need
to go there with a strong team and put a performance in. "It is important
that we keep playing and getting results."
West Ham currently occupy tenth place in the table with 37 points and are
nicely poised to make a challenge for a UEFA Cup spot during the remainder
of the season. With 13 Premier League games to go, they need to pick up at
least seven wins (58 points was enough for sixth-place Everton to get into
Europe last season) and Noble believes that the heroics of last season -
when the Hammers won seven of their last nine games to avoid relegation -
will stand them in good stead. "We need to push on and get in them European
places and we have nothing to lose," he said. "It is a similar to last
season at this stage. "Everyone thought we were down so we can just crack on
now and really give everything we have got to put the points on the table
because that is the most important thing. "If we do that I am sure we can
consolidate and keep on catching everyone up."
Meanwhile, the 20-year-old admitted he was delighted to be voted the
whufc.com player of the month for January. Notably his performance against
Liverpool - in which he covered 13km and scored the last-gasp winner from
the penalty spot - went some way to swaying the supporters' votes in the
online poll. Noble (pictured) said: "To beat Liverpool at home summed up a
good month. "I am over the moon that the fans have appreciated the way I
have been playing lately and they are enjoying my performances."

Rumours: Tottenham to battle West Ham for £15m Chelsea pair -Sportigo
Mon, Feb 18, 08 15:41 Mark Apostolou

'Bridge and Sidwell are good players who just need more of a chance at
Premier League football'Steve Sidwell must have known that when he moved to
Stamford Bridge he would struggle to oust the world-class talent in front of
him. Still, I am sure he is earning lots of money at Chelsea!

Now it appears that the 25-year-old ex-Reading and Arsenal player may on his
way out. West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is apparently keen to pick up the £8m
rated midfielder (The People) and Tottenham's Juande Ramos is also
monitoring the situation. Add to this speculation that the Upton Park boss
also wants another supposed Spurs target, full-back Wayne Bridge, and you
have a mammoth battle between the two London sides for the Blues pair.

Obviously there is no love lost between these three sides, and it will be
interesting to see how this triangle of transfer activity develops. Clearly
Sidwell with have England ambitions and playing in the reserves and Carling
Cup won't impress Fabio Capello. Therefore a move is inevitable for Sidwell.

Bridge is in a slightly different boat but has similar problems in terms of
imposing himself as a regular first-team starter for Avram Grant. Bridge and
Sidwell are good players who just need more of a chance at Premier League
football. Both West Ham and Tottenham are more likely to offer them a decent
chance of top-level appearances.

Bonzo building for the future - WHUFC
Bondz N'Gala is hoping to get more chances to show what he can do before the
end of the season
18.02.2008

Bondz N'Gala is learning fast at West Ham United and is looking to add his
name to the list of talented Academy youngsters on the fringes of the first
team.

The imposing centre-back is enjoying life at reserve-team level alongside
England Under-19 defender James Tomkins. The pair first came together for
Kevin Keen's side at home to Chelsea on 10 December with N'Gala turning in a
man of the match display in the goalless draw. They then reunited last week
for the visit of Birmingham City and again were imperious in a 4-1 success.

"My aim is to be a regular for the reserves now and try to push on from
there," the 18-year-old, who is nicknamed Bonzo, told WHUTV. "The next step
is to make my mark for the reserve team. Hopefully, the manager is watching
and I will do all I can to impress." He could get another chance to do just
that on Wednesday night when Fulham arrive at Bishop's Stortford looking to
fare better than Birmingham.

"It was a very good win," N'Gala said of last week's success. "We worked
hard at them and got the result in the end. We had a good team out so we
believed in our ability and got back in the game, and in the end we got
four." As well as Tomkins, the back line featured the highly rated Jordan
Spence, who is still only 17, at right-back and Jonathan Spector, a veteran
by comparison at 21, at left-back.

Having the chance to play alongside the likes of established US
international Spector and returning hat-trick hero Bobby Zamora further
forward is something that N'Gala is looking to use to his advantage. "I am
always listening to what they have got to say and take it on. They have been
there and are willing to help. It is good to see Bob back out there.
Hopefully we will see him out there soon for the first team doing the same."

In between those Chelsea and Birmingham reserve fixtures, N'Gala went off to
Weymouth on a work experience arrangement last month only to be recalled
after a change of management at the Conference club. Despite that aborted
spell he did get the chance to taste the top level of non-league football
and found it as useful an experience as playing alongside Zamora and Co.

"It has helped me playing competitive football elsewhere," the homegrown
talent from Forest Gate said. "I have grown up a bit more. I had to grow up
quick in that league. It is a bit different to being here - they play the
ball a bit long more, you have got to get used to it. There was more heading
for me. It was good."

N'Gala's first game upon his return to West Ham United was helping the
Under-18s to a 2-0 win at Arsenal on 2 February and he was back in action
again for Tony Carr's in-form Academy side at the weekend as they won 1-0
away to Southampton. "It is good to be back and to see the lads again. It is
good to be playing in the West Ham shirt again as well."

Carr pleased with young charges - WHUFC
West Ham United's Under-18s are on a roll as two good victories away to
table-topping sides demonstrate
17.02.2008

Tony Carr has paid tribute to his young team as they maintained their fine
form at the weekend with a superb 1-0 win away to Southampton.

The victory means the Under-18s have beaten the top two teams in the
division in their last two outings away from Little Heath, having already
won 2-0 at Arsenal a fortnight ago. Carr was also pleased that both
successes had erased the memory of defeats by the two clubs earlier in the
campaign, and that Saturday's match-winner Junior Stanislas had kept going
despite missing an earlier penalty.

"Junior made amends and scored the winning goal for us," Carr said, mindful
that Stanislas had also missed from the spot in a 2-0 win against Ipswich
Town last December when he had already scored two goals and was on a
hat-trick. His penalty profligacy is also surprising given his prowess with
free-kicks this campaign. "He can't score from 12 yards but he was pleased
to get the winner," Carr said. "He grabbed the ball and he was determined to
take it but he missed. It is all part of the learning experience."

Stanislas is an exciting young prospect, with Carr expecting him to push on
his development in a wide-right position although he can also play on the
left-hand side. While he makes progress at club level, he has also twice
been an unused substitute for England Under-19s this season. "He is on the
fringes of the England squad," said Carr. "He's got a little bit to do to
force himself into the team."

Reflecting further on Saturday's success, he said: "We just deserved to win
it on the day. I thought we carried the bigger threat going forward. They
defended resolutely and restricted us to a few efforts at goal but we got
there in the end. It is a good time at the moment and hopefully we can carry
on and remain unbeaten for as long as possible."

Aware his team had previously lost 6-1 and 3-2 to Arsenal and Southampton
respectively inside a fortnight at the end of October and start of November,
Carr explained his satisfaction at seeing things go his side's way. "It is
always nice to make amends for an earlier defeat. Three or four months down
the road, the teams are slightly different and it is a different game but it
is always nice to get one back if you get beaten by a team. Southampton are
at the top and Arsenal are second. We have beaten them both and kept a clean
sheet."

With Bondz N'Gala back in the side after sitting out last weekend's 4-1 win
at home against Norwich City, Carr this time decided to rest Jordan Spence.
Both defenders figured for the reserves in the 4-1 midweek victory against
Birmingham City and the youth academy director underlined that he has to get
the balance right in terms of games played by his young charges. "I didn't
want Jordan to play three games in a week. I knew Bondz was going to play on
Tuesday so I left him out last time.

"When I get the opportunity I try to rest them here and there. You can do it
on the odd occasion but it is difficult for them to play Saturday, Tuesday
and Saturday," Carr added about his crop of talented teenagers who are still
getting to grips with the game. Key to everything is the close coordination
between the Academy and reserve-team manager Kevin Keen, through to Alan
Curbishley's senior set-up.

"We work together every day so we talk about what teams are going to play,
who might play and in which games. At reserve-team level, it is all to do
with what senior players play and then we work it back from there."

Upson's buzz at the Boleyn - WHUFC
England defender Matthew Upson is honoured to be wearing the No6 shirt for
West Ham United
17.02.2008

Matthew Upson has spoken of his pride at wearing the No6 shirt at West Ham
United.

With next Sunday marking 15 years to the day that club legend Bobby Moore
passed away, Upson has revealed what it means to him to have the shirt.
"It's a big honour," he told the matchday programme. "Sometimes I do sit at
home and think about it and I get a little buzz because it's a big honour. I
didn't actually specifically ask for it. I was given it and it's a real
honour to wear that shirt."

While Upson is understandably looking to play for England against France in
Paris next month, the defender is first and foremost committed to giving his
all at the Boleyn Ground. Having played every minute of this season's league
campaign after the "dreadful" events of last year when injury cost him the
chance to help in the fight for survival, Upson said: "It's only just
beginning at West Ham. I want to give some very good years in my career to
West Ham and I feel I am coming into my prime."

He also sees plenty of competition coming up through the ranks with the
likes of England youth internationals Jordan Spence and James Tomkins set to
stake a claim in future. "Tomka's showed some real talent and understanding
of the position. Jordan looks very good too. He's trained with us a few
times and he looks a really good athlete. He's got a good athletic build.
There are some good young prospects coming through."

His current partner Anton Ferdinand is still only 22 himself and, having
played alongside his brother Rio for England earlier this month, Upson can
see that his young colleague has a bright future ahead. "They are quite
different. Rio is a more polished version at the moment his stature, career
and experience is at a greater level but Anton has some every good aspects
and if he keeps working and improving I am sure that he will do very well."

With the team not playing this weekend ahead of the trip to Fulham,
fittingly a club also served by the legendary Moore, next Saturday, Upson
has relished the chance of an extended break. "It has been a crazy couple of
weeks. I have had six games in two weeks, so the body and mind could do with
a rest." That said, he is not going to stop putting in the work on the
practice pitches - with a refreshing philosophy about life at the training
ground.

"Never waste a day," he said. "Turn up to work every morning and improve at
something, even if it's learning how to do something really miniscule, it
doesn't matter. Take something out of the day which has made you a better
player. If you do that throughout your career, you can only get better."

Stanislas sees off Southampton - WHUFC
Despite missing an earlier penalty, Junior Stanislas underlined his class
with a key goal for the Under-18s
16.02.2008

Southampton Under-18s 0-1 West Ham United Under-18s

Junior Stanislas struck the only goal of the game to give West Ham United a
precious away victory against league leaders Southampton.

The talented midfielder, impressive for the reserves in midweek, had earlier
missed a penalty but kept going to score with a fine finish in the 75th
minute. The three points mean Tony Carr's side, who have won four of their
last five games and drawn the other, are now just a point behind Southampton
in Group A of the Premier Academy League. To underline the Saints' youth
pedigree, they have been divisional champions for the past four years.

It was a cagey contest at Stapleford with Carr's young charges perhaps
showing the effects of a 6am start in order to make it to the south coast
for an 11am kick-off. Southampton dominated the first half but the visitors
picked up the pace before the interval and were able to turn around with the
score goalless.

West Ham United were a different proposition after the break and carved out
a couple of opportunities, notably through Stanislas's header and a shot
from Anthony Edgar. Then, on the hour, Zavon Hines surged into the box only
to be fouled. The referee pointed to the spot and Stanislas stepped up to
take it. However, the goalkeeper dived to his right to make a good save.

Undeterred, the visitors kept going and finally broke the deadlock when Tony
Brookes surged forward from right-back. He crossed into the area and the
Southampton goalkeeper collided with one of his team-mates as he tried to
claim possession. The ball dropped free and Stanislas was on hand to drive
the ball into the net from a slight angle on the half-volley.

Southampton, as their league position suggests, were not about to give up
and kept going in the closing stages. That spell included their best
opportunity of the match when an effort crashed against the post but Adam
Street was able to keep a clean sheet for the second consecutive away game
after the 2-0 win at Arsenal which preceded last weekend's 4-1 home success
against Norwich City.

'Season starts now', says Neill - WHUFC
Having the chance to rest this weekend should set West Ham United up
perfectly for the games to come
16.02.2008

Lucas Neill said West Ham United will be doing all they can to treat the
return to action next Saturday at Fulham as the chance to start the final
push this season.

With 13 games remaining, the captain believed the weekend break has afforded
everyone at the club "a great time to put a line through everything and
"recharge the batteries". He added: "The best way to look at it now is to
start our season from when we get back.

"We have got 13 games left, how many can we win, how far can it take us.
Let's forget about everything that has happened and hope that we have got an
80 to 90 per cent squad fit to choose from and start the season now." The
club are more than secure in mid-table on 37 points but Neill said as well
as looking up there was a need to be mindful of the teams pushing hard in
the bottom half of the table.

"We have to keep a small eye on our rivals Tottenham now who seem to be
gaining momentum and seem to be getting things right," he explained. "They
are only five points behind as a result of our last two performances and not
picking up enough points. We don't want to drop out of the top ten, that is
the first thing." That said, the emphasis is on the other end of the table.
"We have lost opportunities but there is still the opportunity to strive for
fifth or sixth place."

Neill had sympathy with fans who have been disappointed with the 1-0 defeat
at Wigan Athletic and the 1-1 home draw with Birmingham City that preceded
the extended break from action. "We have come along way since last year. As
exciting as last year was, this year we are winning games for different
reasons and we know that teams are going to make it really hard for us.

"It is a back-handed compliment to us that teams are going to come and try
to frustrate and as a result we might not be able to play that freeflowing
football we probably haven't played enough of this season. The fans have
been fantastic all season and we need them. We ask for them to get behind us
even in the frustrating time."

Junior Stanislas' second half strike was enough to earn all three points for
West Ham United's under 18s against Southampton at the Saints' Stapleford
training complex this morning. Tony Carr's youngsters moved to within a
point of league leaders Southampton thanks to the midfielder's second half
strike, which came 15 minutes from time. The United midfielder pounced on a
mix-up between the Saints goalkeeper and one of his defenders to fire home
the winning goal from close range for Carr's Hammers, who extended their
unbeaten run to five games. The margin - and Stanislas' personal tally -
could have been even greater but for a penalty miss on the hour mark. West
Ham - on 39 points from 22 games - now trail league leaders Southampton by a
single point with just six games of the season to go. However Arsenal - who
Carr's side beat 2-0 at London Colney a fortnight ago and play Crystal
Palace today - remain favourites to take the title, as they trail the
Hammers by just three points with four games in hand having thrashed
Southampton 5-2 last weekend.

Di Canio's Hammers dream - SSN
Italian eyes Upton Park return
Last updated: 17th February 2008

Former West Ham icon Paolo Di Canio has revealed he dreams of returning to
the club as manager one day. Di Canio enjoyed a successful four seasons at
Upton Park establishing himself as a hero among the club's fans. The
colourful Italian plans to hang up his boots this summer and move into
management with the hot-seat at West Ham his dream role. "I will take up
managing next year. I hope to have the same success as a coach that a did as
a player," Di Canio told The People. "My dream would be to manage in the

particular would be to manage at West Ham, that would be perfect. "I spent
four seasons there and I would love to go back and win something with them.
The fans are fantastic there and the atmosphere at Upton Park was always
special. "I haven't been back for a few years but I hope to go and watch a
match in the Bobby Moore Stand before the end of the season. "It would be
incredible to go there as a manager. Every weekend I watch all the English
games on the TV but I have a special place for them in my heart for West

Keegan Targets Ashton, Brown And Bridge - goal.com

The Sun claims that Kevin keegan's summer shopping list at Newcastle
comprises Dean Ashton, Wes Brown and Wayne Bridge. West Ham striker Dean
Ashton is said to top the Toon boss' wishlist, with the ex-Norwich man
having returned from injury to decent effect this season. Keegan apparently
sees the former England U-21 man as being key to solving his side's
goalscoring woes, which is of particular importance given the uncertain
future of the Owen-Viduka partnership. At the other end, Manchester United's
Wes Brown has been earmarked to shore up the defence, with the one-club man
perhaps said to be expendable at Old Trafford. That would allow the Magpies
to swoop for the international stopper, although whether or not Brown would
be open to such a move is another matter. The same goes for Chelsea's Wayne
Bridge, who Keegan wants to follow in the footsteps of Damien Duff by
swapping London for the North East. Bridge, 28, has found first team action
harder and harder to come by over the past two campaigns, though, and could
potentially jump at the chance for regular action. Keegan said little of his
exact plans, stating only, "There are players we are looking to in terms of
thinking, can we get a wish list and can we get people to go and watch
them?"

West Ham go for £10M Chelsea pair Bridge, Sidwell

West Ham United boss Alan Curbishley is ready to offer £10 million for
Chelsea pair Wayne Bridge and Steve Sidwell. The People says England
left-back Bridge is tired of playing second fiddle to Ashley Cole - and is
ready to quit this summer. Hammers boss Curbishley has already expressed an
interest in Bridge, 27, who is keen to stay in London. Curbs has also lined
up a move for Stamford Bridge midfielder Sidwell, who has failed to gain
regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge since last summer's move from
Reading. Bridge has played fewer than half of Chelsea's matches since 2003
and was loaned out to Fulham to prevent him going rusty before the last
World Cup.

my heart for West Ham. "I watched the game against Liverpool the other week
with four friends, all Italian West Ham fans, and we celebrated when Mark
Noble scored the penalty in the 94th minute. "When I watch the Premiership I
am always proud to see players that were young boys when I was at West Ham,
like Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand. "I saw them grow up into

Noble grateful to West Ham fans
tribalfooball.com - February 16, 2008

Mark Noble is delighted with the response he's received from West Ham fans
this season. "I am over the moon that the fans have appreciated the way I
have been playing lately and they are enjoying my performances," the England
U21 midfielder told WHUTV. Central to that last month was his nerveless
display against Liverpool when he scored from the spot in the last minute
having run more than 13km during the game. "To beat Liverpool at home summed
up a good month. We need to push on and get in them European places. We seem
to take more points off the bigger teams than we do with the lesser teams.
It is important that we keep playing, getting results. "It is a similar
situation to last season at this stage. Everyone thought we were down so we
can just crack on now and really give everything we have got to put the
points on the table because that is the most important thing. If we do that
I am sure we can consolidate and keep on catching everyone up."

Collins keeping the faith - WHUFC
James Collins is still in good spirits despite the disappointment of his
knee-ligament injury
14.02.2008

James Collins is targeting as quick a return as possible from his serious
knee injury with surgery due next week before he begins on the road to
recovery.

The Wales defender suffered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his
right knee during a reserve-team outing at Portsmouth on 23 January - just
as he was approaching full fitness and a return to regular first-team
action. West Ham United head physiotherapist George Cooper is optimistic
that Collins could yet return to play some part in pre-season training this
summer.

"He has got a 75 per cent tear of his anterior cruciate ligament and that
was diagnosed under arthroscopy which has made planning the operation much
easier," he said. "There is going to be no surprises when they go inside the
knee. They know what is going on in there." While it is difficult to predict
yet when Collins will be ready to return, the hope is that he could resume
training in six months.

Of the unfortunate injury itself, which came about when a Portsmouth player
went over under pressure on the halfway line and landed on top of Collins'
right knee, Cooper said: "The guy's fallen on him. It was a committed tackle
which he does four or five times a day in training. It looked innocuous
compared to the whole-hearted challenges he usually makes."

Speaking to the official matchday programme, Collins is ready to begin the
"hard work" as soon as the operation is carried out. He added: "I think the
minimum time I will be out is six months so that is what I am aiming
towards. It is weird because I am not in any pain or anything. I can bend my
knee no problem and even run already, which is what I am finding it hard to
get my head round as I can do all that but I can't play football.

"However, I understand making any sort of tackle and kicking the ball, I
would be in trouble so I just have to take my time, do as I am told by the
physios and that way I will suffer no setbacks." Pledging to continue
"supporting the boys every week", Collins said the strong team spirit at the
club would help him cope with the lay-off. "This is the first long-term
injury I have picked up so it is going to be tough to deal with, but
everyone around me is really supportive, which always helps."

Meanwhile, Cooper said he was pleased with the prospects for Calum
Davenport, who is also targeting a summer return after suffering a fracture
to one of the vertebrae in his neck on 19 January during the first match of
a loan at Watford. Cooper said: "I have to complement Watford for the
impeccable way they handled it. Calum was lucky to have such a good team
around him when it happened." Cooper said the initial "loss of power and
pins and needles" Davenport felt was due to swelling. "That has now
disappeared and he is expected to make a full recovery."

Sidwell has barely featured for Chelsea's first team this season, and was

He was linked with a move to relegation-threatened Sunderland during the

Hammers tour in the Can? - KUMB

West Ham are one of three Premier League teams being linked with a
money-spinning pre-season tour of North America. Canadian outfit Vancouver
Whitecaps announced yesterday that they had agreed to play a 'top ten'
Premier League side this summer in either Burnaby's Swangard Stadium or BC
Place Stadium. Whitecaps Club President and former manger of the Canadian
national team, Bob Lenarduzzi, said: "We can't be specific at the moment.
All I can say at this time is the team is currently in the top half of the
English Premier League standings. "If the draw is big enough, we would
consider going into BC Place."
The Whitecaps play in the USL First Division, an 11-team league consisting
of nine American sides and two Candian. The standard of football is similar
to the Football League Two (or Division 4 to those of our readers above 30).
West Ham United announced last May that they had opened an academy in the
USA, whilst Eggert Magnusson hinted late last year, prior to his departure
from the club that the Hammers were investigating the possibility of playing
at least one 'home' Premier League fixture in North America.

Sidwell to make move to West Ham - blueandwhitearmy
By Paul Griffiths - 14/02/2008 22:55

According to reports, Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell will make a move away
from Stamford Bridge and Chelsea to move to Upton Park to join West Ham
during the next summer transfer window for a sum that is said to be in the
region of £5m. Sidwell has struggled to make an impression since his move
from Reading last summer.
He was said to be shattered when Avram Grant omitted him from Chelsea's
squad for the knock-out stages of the Champions League, a decision that is
said to have made the midfielder's mind up about leaving Stamford Bridge as
soon as he can. Sidwell has found life hard with a plethora of big name
stars ahead of him in the Chelsea midfield pecking-order. He had hoped to
cement his place firmly in the squad when Michael Essien and Obi John Mikel
midfield but he was left out of contention for last Sunday's game against
Liverpool with Obi coming into the squad after he returned from Africa.
West Ham manager Alan Curbishley is keen to sign Sidwell and is prepared to
match the £5m per year wage deal he currently enjoys at Stamford Bridge.
However, West Ham will face stiff opposition from Sidwell's former side
Reading with manager Steve Coppell hoping to persuade him to make a return
to The Madejski Stadium.

losing Michael owen, who cost a whopping £16 million from Real Madrid, for
nothing with the players contract having just 1 year remaining to run.
Owen will demand a four year deal worth £5 million per season to remain at
St James Park and with Liverpool, Manchester City and West Ham all waiting
in the wings, the Toon will have little choice but to give the player what
he wants.

Hammers skipper contemplates missed opportunities
By Guardian-series

LUCAS Neill believes that West Ham's recent poor results could have
scuppered the club's bid to claim a UEFA Cup spot this season. The Irons
were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw with struggling Birmingham at Upton Park
on Saturday, which followed a 1-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Wigan. But
the Hammers skipper reckons they needed all six points to stay in touch with
seventh-placed Manchester City - instead they find themselves trailing by
seven points. "We have obviously lost ground - we lost points and what
should have been a really exciting month is starting to look a little bit
anti-climatic now," Neill told WHUTV. "It is definately two games that we
were going to look back at the end of the season and think we should have
possibly got maximum points." The Irons can still get back in the hunt for
Europe with a victory over Fulham in their next match. And Neill (pictured)
has urged his team mates to look on the club's achievements of last season
as inspiration. He said: "As we all know, last year we won seven out of nine
games so all is not lost yet.
"We are all very disappointed but we also had a good chat about what we are
going to do here on in."

Shorey stalls on new Royals deal - TeamTalk

Reading defender Nicky Shorey has put contract negotiations at the Madejski
Stadium on hold until the end of the season. Shorey, who is under contract
with the Royals until 2009, is believed to be the target of the Premier
League's top four as well as West Ham, and Reading are keen to tie the
full-back to a long-term deal. However, Shorey has decided to put
negotiations on hold until the summer and it is thought the England
international is waiting to see if Reading avoid relegation this season
before making a decision upon his future. Reading director of football Nick
Hammond does, however, remain confident that positive negotiations will take
place in the summer. "In all honesty I think we will look again in the
summer and see what the situation is then. He still has a year on his
contract to run after this season," Hammond told the Reading Evening Post.
"You'd need to speak to him in that respect," added Hammond when asked if he
thought Shorey was waiting to see if Reading maintain their top flight
status. "I think he'd already made the decision (about whether he wanted to
sign a new deal) at the start of this season and there's no reason why that
has changed. "The important thing now is that he performs well up until the
summer and then we will speak again."

Transfer speculation: Steve Sidwell to West Ham United (£5 million) -
squarefootball.net

Steve Sidwell to Chelsea was always one of those deals that most fans looked
at and thought- "how many games will you play? " The answer turned out to be
quite a few but only when there's a lot of players missing. Avram Grant's
decison to take Sidwell off the Champions League squad list made the
ex-Reading man's position crystal clear. There's every chance Chelsea will
sign even more midfield talent in the summer and Sidwell is never going to
be a regular. The Mirror says that West Ham will offer the midfielder a way
out in the summer but there's bound to be other clubs on the case. The
number of internationals that the 'Big 4' can pile up in their squads should
give some players pause for thought about moves to the elite clubs but with
the riches on offer- and the chance to win something- it's hard to turn them
down.

West Ham coach: Zamora can be best in Premiership
tribalfooball.com - February 14, 2008

West Ham United reserves boss Kevin Keen is convinced Bobby Zamora can
fulfil his potential at Upton Park. Fit-again Zamora struck a hat-trick in
this week's 4-4 draw with Birmingham City and Keen told WHUTV: "Bobby is an
outstanding athlete. In my opinion he is one of the best forwards in the
Premier League when he is fit and I have told him that on many occasions. We
have just got to be a bit careful as to when we bring him back.
"We haven't got a game this weekend and then we play Fulham away but he
could be a real diamond to have in the run-in for Curbs and Mervyn. He can
really turn games, he can score goals - I don't want to speak too highly of
him because he is a big enough character anyway."

Kevin keen on Bobby - WHUFC
Reserve-team manager Kevin Keen has spoken highly of Bobby Zamora's
all-round midweek contribution
14.02.2008

Kevin Keen has praised "outstanding athlete" Bobby Zamora on WHUTV after his
startling return to competitive action this week.

The reserve-team manager was delighted to be able to name Zamora in his
lineup to face Birmingham City on Tuesday night and even more pleased to see
him notch a second-half hat-trick. "He has been out a long while and it is
good he is back," Keen told WHUTV about the striker's performance in his
first competitive game since 28 August which will have no doubt impressed
manager Alan Curbishley and assistant Mervyn Day.

Keen added: "Bobby is an outstanding athlete. In my opinion he is one of the
best forwards in the Premier League when he is fit and I have told him that
on many occasions. We have just got to be a bit careful as to when we bring
him back. We haven't got a game this weekend and then we play Fulham away
but he could be a real diamond to have in the run-in for Curbs and Mervyn.
He can really turn games, he can score goals - I don't want to speak too
highly of him because he is a big enough character anyway."

The former Hammers midfielder admitted his side had not shown any glimpses
of the second half showing to come when they walked off level pegging at 1-1
on Tuesday. "We came in at half-time a little bit disappointed because we
felt there was a little bit of composure, class and quality lacking in our
play. We tweaked it a little bit and brought Junior [Stanislas] on and I
thought he made a big difference. We played a little bit through midfield
and obviously the three goals from Bobby made it all worthwhile."

Also, noteworthy was the display of Julien Faubert and Jack Collison, with
the former making two of Zamora's goals and also one for the latter, who yet
again showed maturity beyond his 19 years as reserve-team captain. Keen
said: "If you look at Julien's performance, he made three of the four goals
which is not bad going.

"It has been a good year for Jack, he's made his senior debut, he's got into
the Wales Under-21 squad, he's managed to score a few goals and played a lot
of games in the reserves. He is very hard-working, grafting midfield player
who can nick a goal. I hope that between now and the end of the season we
might get to see him a couple of times in the first team. We will have to
wait and see."

Attacking midfielder Stanislas was only named on the bench after Luis Boa
Morte withdrew late on as his wife was giving birth. Despite having trained
fully earlier in the day, Keen felt Stanislas could provide the necessary
spark behind Zamora. "I just felt at half-time we needed a little bit of
quality on the ball. He gave us that - he played half and hour and then I
tugged him off because he had trained in the morning. He did very well."

There was also encouragement for young defenders Jordan Spence and Bondz
N'Gala, with Spence showing some attacking instincts at right-back and
N'Gala imperious alongside James Tomkins in the centre. The final word of
praise though were dedicated to Zamora with Keen urging all to check out his
treble on WHUTV. "If you look at the four goals on the internet they are
high quality goals, that in itself made it worthwhile."

Neill expects luck to turn - WHUFC
Lucas Neill has spoken of his disappointment at the weekend's result but has
high hopes going forward
13.02.2008

Lucas Neill has told WHUTV West Ham United will be able to put the weekend
setback against Birmingham City behind them and get back to winning ways.

The club captain was involved in the penalty decision that allowed James
McFadden to cancel out Freddie Ljungberg's early goal and ensure the 1-1
draw that meant a point apiece. As McFadden spun past Neill, referee Mark
Clattenburg believed the skipper had impeded the Scottish forward's progress
and pointed to the spot. "It was frustrating for us and frustrating for the
fans," said Neill on WHUTV. "Some said it was a penalty, others said it
wasn't. I am disappointed to be involved.

"The game was almost too easy for the first 15 minutes. We opened them up a
few times and had a few half-chances. We were guilty of what we have been
doing a lot lately which is not punishing teams when we have been dominant.
Although the penalty was soft at the other end it took the wind out of our
sails. It was disappointing that we couldn't get another goal to take the
lead again."

While reflecting on the harsh decision, Neill said the luck would no doubt
go for the team in future. "We will get a chance, a decision that will go
our way in the next couple of weeks that probably people will think we don't
deserve and it will probably even itself out. "It could have been prevented
but we also should have been 2-0 up by then. As it was it was brought them a
bit of belief, a bit of life and gave them the opportunity to hold on to
something. We couldn't rise above it."

Neill sees the weekend draw and the previous 1-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic as
five lost points and, with no game now until Saturday week, is well aware
that things have not gone quite to plan in February. "We have obviously lost
ground, we lost points and what should have been a really exciting month is
starting to look a little bit anti-climactic now. It is definitely two games
that we are going to look back at the end of the season and think we should
have possibly got maximum points."

That said, West Ham United can still possibly move up to ninth spot with a
victory against Fulham next time out and close on the top six or seven -
especially as Neill's former club Blackburn Rovers were defeated 2-0 at
Arsenal on Monday night. "We are all very disappointed but also we had a
good chat about what we are going to do here on in. As we all know last year
we won seven out of nine games so all is not lost yet."

Form and fitness cheers Zamora - WHUFC
Bobby Zamora was pleased to get three goals but even happier to take another
step forward with his fitness
13.02.2008

Bobby Zamora showed he is closing on a first-team return with a well-taken
hat-trick in a terrific display for the reserves against Birmingham City on
Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old striker has been out since 28 August with a persistent knee
injury that has required many long hours at Chadwell Heath on the road to
recovery. Always among the first to arrive early in the morning at the
training ground, Zamora's hard work with the club's medical staff was put to
the test with a full 90 minutes at the Boleyn Ground. It came after a
behind-closed-doors friendly against Queen's Park Rangers last week in which
he also scored.

"It has been a while," a delighted Zamora said. "To get a full 90 minutes
and score a hat-trick against a good team is nice, having got 65 minutes
last week. They had a lot of pros playing, so to do well was good. We worked
hard and thankfully I scored a few goals," said Zamora, before joking that
the referee would not give him the match ball despite his hat-trick feat. He
also had a word for the fans who were "right behind me", adding: "It was
nice to give them something to cheer, thanks to them for coming out."

It was a cagey first half at the Boleyn Ground, with Zamora involved in the
build-up play to captain Jack Collison's equaliser just before half-time.
The second 45 saw Kevin Keen put Zamora in a lone striking role with the
likes of Kyel Reid and Julien Faubert given licence to get forward at will
along the flanks. It paid dividends. "They had some good players out there
and passed the ball well but we were able to change things around in the
second half and come up right against them," Zamora explained.

All three of Zamora's goals were different. The first on 58 minutes saw neat
control, a quick turn and a blasted effort into the net. The second was a
cute flick from Faubert's low cross to the near post and the third was a
powerful but precise header from another cross by the flying Frenchman on
the right wing. Faubert also came through the full 90 minutes and Zamora
said his team-mate performed "brilliantly".

"He is in exactly the same situation as me," the forward added. "He has had
a few bits and pieces since coming back. He has been sub for the first team
but for him to get another 90 minutes is the main thing. He put in a few
brilliant balls and made my job a lot easier." While naturally delighted
with the goals, Zamora stressed the "main thing was to get the fitness".

He added: "It has been a long time. I don't want to go into the first team
not fully fit and that is the main thing. I don't want to go out and not do
the team justice and not do myself justice really. Making sure I am fit
enough is important. I want to take it slowly, I don't want to break down. I
want to make sure I am 100 per cent before I go back and try and fight for
my place in the first team."

Zamora may well figure next Wednesday when the reserves are again at home,
although at Bishop's Stortford, against Fulham - three days before the
senior sides meet at Craven Cottage. Although rightly cautious about when he
will return, he is still hoping to have his say in first-team affairs before
the end of the season. "It would be nice to make an impact in the first team
for the run-in," he said. "We haven't got it too bad. March is going to be
quite hard but there are plenty of games that are winnable. We have got to
try and push on and do as well as we can."

Widdowson begins Rotherham spell - WHUFC
Joe Widdowson has left the Boleyn Ground on a month's loan at League Two
outfit Rotherham United
14.02.2008

Promising young left-back Joe Widdowson has begun a one-month loan at League
Two side Rotherham United.

The Academy product travelled up to Millmoor on Tuesday and signed in time
to make his Millers debut in a reserve-team match against Leeds United on
Wednesday. It was to be a difficult first game with a strong visiting side
winning 3-0. Widdowson has been signed by promotion-chasing Rotherham as
cover for their injured defender Stephen Brogan, who broke his leg last
Saturday.

The 18-year-old had previously spent a week with Carlisle United before
Christmas and returned to the Boleyn Ground to re-establish himself in the
youth-team set-up. Notably he helped the U18s beat Arsenal earlier this
month in a 2-0 victory having also earned praise from Kevin Keen for a
strong display at reserve-team level in the 0-0 home draw against Chelsea in
January. Widdowson could make his Rotherham debut away to Wycombe Wanderers
this Saturday.

West Ham drop out of rich list - BBC
Real top Man Utd in rich league

Manchester United have moved from fourth to second in the list of the
world's richest clubs, as Real Madrid stayed top for the third straight
year. Deloitte's Football Money League, which is based on revenues generated
during 2006/7, was headed by United for eight years until the Spaniards
deposed them.
Chelsea are fourth in Deloitte's table, even though the Blues regularly make
huge losses. Arsenal are fifth. In all, there are seven British clubs in the
top 20 positions. However, three of the four clubs that dropped out of the
list were also British - Manchester City, Rangers, and West Ham United. The
list shows that the game's riches continue to be monopolised by the same
group of clubs, with only one change in the top 10 from the previous season.
Juventus dropped out because they played in the second-tier of Italian
football in 2006/07, their place in the top 10 going to Italian rivals Roma.

WORLD'S WEALTHIEST CLUBS BY REVENUE
1) Real Madrid: £236.2m
2) Man Utd: £212.1m
3) Barcelona: £195.3m
4) Chelsea: £190.5m
5) Arsenal: £177.6m
6) AC Milan: £153m
7) Bayern Munich: £150.3m
8) Liverpool: £133.9m
9) Inter Milan: £131.3m
10) AS Roma: £106.1m
Source: Deloitte: 2006/7

Deloitte's figures take into account income from ticket sales, merchandising
and broadcasting contracts but do not include transfer revenues and does not
calculate profitability. Between them, the collective revenue of the top 20
clubs - which are all European - grew by 11% to £2.5bn in 2006/07, the
highest rate of growth since 2002/03. Real Madrid retained its crown as the
world's wealthiest club, in terms of sales, in a season when it clinched the
Spanish championship under Fabio Capello, and with David Beckham in the
team. Its revenues rose to £236.2m from £202m the year before.

Manchester United moved into second place, leapfrogging Barcelona and
Juventus, thanks to a season in which they won the Premier League and
reached both the Champions League semi-final and FA Cup final. Real saw a
20% increase to take their total revenue, though Manchester United's revenue
grew even more quickly, up from £167.8m to £212m. Dan Jones, of Deloitte's
sports business group, said: "With the new Premier League television deals
now online for the 2007/08 season, Manchester United have the opportunity to
significantly close the gap on Real. "A successful Champions League run may
even see them challenge again for the number one position."

Deloitte says the new TV money could help more English clubs into the top 20
in a year's time. Meanwhile, Arsenal, helped by increased revenues at their
new Emirates Stadium, jumped from ninth place to fifth, while Chelsea's move
up to fourth spot means England are the first country to have three clubs in
the top five. The other British clubs to make it into the list were
Liverpool (8), Tottenham Hotspur (11), Newcastle United (14), and Celtic
(17).

Harry Philp, director of sports finance and advisory firm Hermes Sports
Partners, said: "The top seven or eight clubs tend to usually be the same,
and generally drawn from the big English, Spanish and Italian clubs. "Real
Madrid will have been helped by the very lucrative TV deal that they have,
and the fact that their stadium is pretty much sold out for every game.
"Manchester United have been helped by their success on the field but also
by ticket price increases. "They have also done a lot of renegotiation of
much of its financial arrangements. "Arsenal have clearly benefited from the
move to the Emirates."

A Bad-ri day at the office - KUMB

Police are treating as suspicious the death of one of Kia Joorabchian's
alleged backers in his recent takeover bid for West Ham United. 52-year-old
Georgian tycoon Badri Patarkatsishvili collapsed and died from a suspected
heart attack in Leatherhead, Surrey yesterday. However Police have referred
the death of Mr Patarkatsishvili, who had previously revealed that he
thought he was the target of an assassination plot, to their Major Crimes
Investigations Unit. Joorabchian has claimed at the time of his takeover bid
that the Georgian, who was living in England in exile having been charged
with plotting a coup in his home country was not involved with his bid to
purchase West Ham United. However multi-millionaire Patarkatsishvili, when
questioned at the time refused to deny any involvement with Joorabchian. "We
have invested in a wonderful football club in Brazil, Corinthians and I have
a couple of football investments I am reluctant to mention; they are in the
process of being finalised," he said in August 2005. "Money has a wonderful
habit of flowing where it feels comfortable. I invest in these clubs with
friends."
Boris Berezovsky, another who was linked with the Hammers bid said today:
"The death of Badri Patarkatsishvili is a terrible tragedy. I have lost my
closest friend. This is a huge loss for all of his family and friends."

Slow, nice and easy - KUMB

Bobby Zamora says that he is looking forward to a first team return - but
doesn't want to rush it. The 27-year-old striker has been out of action
since last August but scored a second half hat-trick against Birmingham's
reserves at The Boleyn Ground last night. Having had his first full 90
minutes in six months behind him, Zamora says that he is looking forward to
getting back to first team action. However he issists that he won't make
himself available for selection until he is sure that he is ready to do so.
"It has been a long time," he told whufc.com. "I don't want to go into the

Carr's hope for Sears - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 13th February 2008
By: Staff Writer

Tony Carr says he is hopeful that under-18s starlet Fred Sears can make the
grade at first team level. Sears - who was relegated to the bench for the
reserves' 4-1 win over Birmingham last night in order to accommodate the
returning Bobby Zamora - has scored eight times in his last five games for
the youth team and is having an exceptional season, having also represented
England at the same level. Carr - who has nurtured the likes of Joe Cole,
Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick in the past - says that he is hopeful that
Sears can follow in such illustrious footsteps, although was keen to keep a
lid on expectations in the wake of elevated praise from certain quarters in
recent weeks. "I have been in football for too long to hang my hat fully on
players," Carr told whufc.com. "You hope and you bring them along the right
paths but they have to take the opportunities when they come along.
"Freddie's doing that at the moment with us, he has been playing well in
training and in performances for the reserves but certainly for next season
and beyond he has got to replicate that form with us and carry it through to
more senior football. "He is training with the first team on a regular basis
now and working with the senior players is doing him a lot of good.
Obviously he is one that we hope can push on and reproduce his form at a
more senior level. That is the key.
"We have had many a great youth player that can't make that step and Fred
has to show that he can replicate his form in the reserves and then at a
higher level in the future."
The famous Hammers Academy that produced a string of young stars in the late
90s has been relative quiet in recent years, with just Anton Ferdinand and
Mark Noble emerging since the turn of the century to secure a long-term
future in the first team squad. However Sears is just one of a number of
talents in perhaps the best crop of youngsters to emerge from Chadwell Heath
since the famous Cole/Ferdinand/Carrick/Defoe quartet; the likes of Junior
Stanislas, Jack Collison and James Tomkins are also expected to push for
inclusion in the frst team squad within the next 12 to 18 months.

Neill - All is not lost - SSN
Defender has sights set on a place in Europe
By Peter Fraser Last updated: 13th February 2008

West Ham defender Lucas Neill insists 'all is not lost' in the Hammers'
pursuit of a place in Europe next season. The Hammers lost ground on their
rivals for a place in the Uefa Cup at the weekend as they were held 1-1 at
home to struggling Birmingham as Neill was adjudged to have fouled James
McFadden in the 18-yard area to gift the Blues a penalty equaliser.
Meanwhile, Everton, Aston Villa and Manchester City all recorded victories
to leave West Ham sitting in 10th spot and seven points off their rivals for
a place in the Premier League's top seven. Neill admits it was frustrating
to be held by Birmingham and the Australian international feels the Hammers
must start to 'punish' their opponents. It was frustrating for us and
frustrating for the fans," Neill told West Ham's official website. "Some
said it was a penalty, others said it wasn't. I am disappointed to be
involved. The game was almost too easy for the first 15 minutes. "We were
guilty of what we have been doing a lot lately which is not punishing teams
when we have been dominant."
However, with ninth place Blackburn losing 2-0 to Arsenal on Monday, Neill
insists that the Hammers have not yet given up hope of European football
next term. And Neill is hoping for a repeat performance of last season's
strong finish which saw the Hammers narrowly avoid relegation following a
run of seven wins from nine games. "We have obviously lost ground, we lost
points and what should have been a really exciting month for us is now
starting to look a little bit anti-climatic," Neill added. "We are all very
disappointed but also we had a good chat about what we are going to do here
on in. "As we all know last year we won seven out of nine games so all is
not lost yet."

Zamora back with a bang - SSN
Hammers hit-man bags a hat-trick on return
By Joe Drabble Last updated: 13th February 2008

Bobby Zamora gave West Ham boss Alan Curbishley a timely fitness reminder
after netting a hat-trick in the reserves' win over Birmingham on Tuesday
night. The former Tottenham striker has been out of action since 28th August
with a persistent knee injury, but could now be closing in on a first-team
return "It has been a while," Zamora told the club's official website. "To
get a full 90 minutes and score a hat-trick against a good team is nice,
having got 65 minutes last week. "We worked hard and thankfully I scored a
few goals. "It was nice to give the fans something to cheer, thanks to them
for coming out."
The fixture provided more good news for Curbishley after new recruit Julien
Faubert also came through 90 minutes with what Zamora described as a
'brilliant' performance. "He is in exactly the same situation as me," Zamora
added. "He has had a few bits and pieces since coming back, but for him to
get another 90 minutes is the main thing. "He put in a few brilliant balls
and made my job a lot easier."
Zamora admitted that although he was pleased with the goals, his ultimate
aim is to make sure he gets back to 100 per cent fitness before he looks any
further ahead. "It has been a long time. I don't want to go into the first
team not fully fit and that is the main thing. "I don't want to go out and
not do the team justice and not do myself justice really. I want to take it

before I go back and try and fight for my place in the first team."

Steve Sidwell to quit Chelsea for London rivals West Ham - The Mirror
14/02/2008

Steve Sidwell will quit Chelsea at the end of the season - and sign for West
Ham in a shock £5million deal. Midfield dynamo Sidwell joined the Stamford
Bridge jet set on a free transfer only last summer. But the former Reading
star has had enough of Chelsea after being axed from their Champions League
squad in a snub that marked his card about the future. Hammers boss Alan
Curbishley has been put on alert and is willing to match his lucrative
£3m-a-year contract. Sidwell featured in Avram Grant's side when they were
without their Africa Cup of Nations stars, but has since been quietly
offered around.
Sunderland, Blackburn and Bolton were all interested - but Sidwell's future
is at Upton Park.

Neill refuses to drop Europe bid for West Ham
tribalfooball.com - February 13, 2008

West Ham defender Lucas Neill insists 'all is not lost' in the Hammers'
pursuit of a place in Europe next season. Neill admits it was frustrating to
be held by Birmingham last weekend and the Australian international feels
the Hammers must start to 'punish' their opponents. It was frustrating for
us and frustrating for the fans," Neill told West Ham's official website. .
"Some said it was a penalty, others said it wasn't. I am disappointed to be
involved. The game was almost too easy for the first 15 minutes. "We were
guilty of what we have been doing a lot lately which is not punishing teams
when we have been dominant." And Neill is hoping for a repeat performance of
last season's strong finish which saw the Hammers narrowly avoid relegation
following a run of seven wins from nine games. "We have obviously lost
ground, we lost points and what should have been a really exciting month for
us is now starting to look a little bit anti-climatic," Neill added. "We are
all very disappointed but also we had a good chat about what we are going to
do here on in.
"As we all know last year we won seven out of nine games so all is not lost
yet."

Zamora delighted with West Ham hat-trick
tribalfooball.com - February 13, 2008

Fit-again Bobby Zamora was delighted with his hat-trick scored in West Ham's
4-4 reserve-team draw with Birmingham City. "It has been a while," a pleased
Zamora told whufc.com. "To get a full 90 minutes and score a hat-trick
against a good team is nice, having got 65 minutes last week. They had a lot
of pros playing, so to do well was good. We worked hard and thankfully I
scored a few goals."
