Bellamy 'feeling good' - WHUFC
A hugely successful run of summer form has left Craig Bellamy eager for the
season to get started
31.07.2008

Craig Bellamy will head to Southampton on a high this Friday after a strong
work-out against Peterborough United in midweek that saw him score another
two goals.

The Welsh international striker showed he is raring to go for West Ham
United by pouncing twice in the first half at London Road to settle an
entertaining contest. As the countdown begins to the new season, Bellamy is
looking to get as much play under his belt as possible so he can be
razor-sharp for the forthcoming campaign.

"We have been working hard, we arrived back from the tour at the weekend and
then began preparation for Tuesday's game straight away. To be honest, it
was good to get out there [against Peterborough] because you tend to feel a
bit leggy after a lot of travelling, so you need to get out there and run it
all off. There was a bit of stiffness near the end of the match but that is
to be expected and I came off, but I am fine and feeling good."

Bellamy scored his first of the evening at Peterborough after just three
minutes - meeting Scott Parker's pass before racing away from the home
defence and slotting the ball into the back of the net. He followed that
with a delightful goal just before half-time. Latching on to Lucas Neill's
long pass, Bellamy rounded the keeper and chipped the ball over his head to
make it 2-0. After scoring a brace up at Hampton and Richmond earlier this
month and taking part in the successful tour for the first-team in North
America, Bellamy is certainly enjoying life.

He said: "Of course you want to get off to a good start, so it's nice that I
have been able to get a few goals so far in pre-season and after being out
last year, to be back playing. You just want to get off the mark, whatever
the game is. I just want to get going now."

Keeper deal confirmed - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 31st July 2008
By: Staff Writer

Reports emanating from the Czech Republic this morning say that Jan Lastuvka
will be joining West Ham on loan for the season. The 26-year-old
international told idnes.cz that a deal had been finally been struck between
United and his current club, Shaktar Donetsk after complications had held up
the deal last week. The goalkeeper is set to fly into London on Friday to
undergo a medical before rubber-stamping his return to the Premier League.
"An agreement was reached; if there is no problem with the medical, I will
join West Ham," said Lastuvka, who admitted he was delighted to have the
opportunity to work with Ludo Miklosko, West Ham United's former Czech
international goalkeeper coach. "I hope everything will be fine," added
Lastuvka. "I am eager for the experience to train under Ludek Miklosko. The
Premier League is the best league in the world, so I would like to fight for
a chance."

Lastuvka - whose previous spell in the Premier League was on loan at Fulham
- will play understudy to United number one Robert Green. Green's former
number two, Richard Wright, left the club in order to join Championship
outfit Ipswich Town earlier this month. Lastuvka, a former student of
philosophy made his name at Banik Ostrava in the Czech Republic before
sealing a move to Shaktar Donetsk in 2004. In 2006 he was sent on a
season-long loan to Fulham where he suffered a torrid time; Fulham
eventually sent him back to Shaktar without taking up the option to buy
clause. Last season Lastuvka - who played at the Boleyn Ground in January
2007 whilst at Fulham - was once again sent on loan, this time to VfL Bochum
of the Bundesliga. However his time with Die Unabsteigbaren was equally
unremarkable and the Germans failed to meet Shaktar's £2million asking
price.

Keeper close to Hammers move - SSN
Czech custodian set for Hammers medical
By Vasek Kadlec Last updated: 31st July 2008

Former Fulham goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka is on the verge of a move to West Ham.
The 26-year-old claims he has agreed personal terms with West Ham to join
the club from Shakhtar Donetsk and that he will make the move to Upton Park
subject to a successful medical. West Ham have set up a loan deal for
Lastuvka as they look to bring in cover for Robert Green and the Czech
keeper is relishing the prospect of returning to the Premier League. "We are
agreed. If the medical turns out well for me, I move to West Ham," Lastuvka
told CTK. "I hope everything will turn out well. I am extremely tempted by
the possibility of being coached by Ludek Miklosko. "The English Premier
League is the best league in Europe, I would like to fight for the chance."

I won't be the first for the chop, insists Alan Curbishley - The Mirror
31/07/2008

Alan Curbishley insists all bets are off after being made favourite to
become the first Premier League boss to get the bullet. The West Ham manager
is 4-1 to be the first victim of the new season after last year's mediocre
showing. But Curbishley claims leading an injury-ravaged squad to 10th place
was a massive result. Curbs said: "I'm not a gambling man so I won't take
too much notice of it. "People need to have a reality check. Finishing 10th
was a big achievement."

Hammers boss unfazed by bookies' odds - Guardian Series
12:16pm Thursday 31st July 2008

ALAN CURBISHLEY insists he is not fazed by the latest bookies' odds which
make him favourite to be the first manager given the boot this season. The
West Ham boss has come under fire for his safety-first style of play and has
been given odds of 5/1 to win the Premier League's annual sack race.
Newcastle's Kevin Keegan and Bolton's Gary Megson are joint
second-favourites at 7/1. Many of Curbishley's first-team regulars were
sidelined through injury for much of last year, although he still managed to
guide the Irons to tenth place. That achievement has failed to silent the
critics or influence the bookmakers, but the manager refuses to allow such
talk to bother him. "I've had 15 years when I've been the outsider so I've
just got to get on with it," he said. "It's life, all part and parcel of
football. I'm not a gambling man so i didnt pay too much attention to it. "I
dont know if im under pressure. I've been around long enough - I've been a
manager for nearly 20 years now - and for most of my career I've been a rank
outsider so makes a change to be up the other end of it," he joked.

Hammers midfielder eyes England place - Guardian Series
11:59am Thursday 31st July 2008

WEST Ham United midfielder Mark Noble has set his sights on earning a place
in Fabio Capello's senior England squad. The 21-year-old has become a
regular member of the Irons first-team and England Under-21 squad over the
past 18 months. Now, the Canning Town-born player believes he is ready to
take the next step and test himself at the very highest level. "My main aim
this season is to break into the England set up, that's what I want and
hopefully I can achieve that," said Noble. "I want to establish myself but
I'm still learning and still growing and hopefully I can really push on this
season." Noble has become a fans' favourite at Upton Park since forcing his
way into Alan Curbishley's team at the tail end of the 2006/07 season. The
youngster's arrival coincided with the Hammers' great escape from relegation
on the final day, with Noble's own form and on-field relationship with
Carlos Tevez widely accepted as a major reason for the club's survival in
the Premier League. Last term, Noble was hit with a series of niggling
injuries and was forced to undergo hernia surgery. But he is now back to
full fitness and looking forward to forming a solid central midfield
partnership with England international Scott Parker. While the start of the
new Premier League season is something Noble is looking forward to, the
confident young playmaker has one date firmly etched in his mind. England's
Under-21s take on Portugal in a European Championship qualifier at the new
Wembley Stadium on Friday, September 5, and the West Ham man is desperate to
take part. "We've got a qualifier coming up against Portugal which is a big
game and it's at Wembley which is even better," he added. "I've not played
at the new stadium although I played at the old one for my district and my
school but this will be a whole new experience and I really can't wait for
it."

What has Curbs got up his sleeve?? - BubblesInTheAir.com
Thursday 31 Jul 2008 11:02:14 by Tony Watson

Hammers boss Alan Curbishley has told the West Ham fans to judge his
transfer dealings on the last day of August. Curbs has been under fire from
many fans who have been frustrated with the clubs lack of activity this
summer in the transfer market. The club have made three signings however,
two of those have been youngsters who are unlikely to feature in the first
team set up for some time and the other was Valon Behrami from Lazio for £5
million - The promising swiss utlity man made his debut against Peterborough
on Tuesday. Curbishley has also shrugged off being the bookies favourite to
get the boot first next season, the Hammers boss is just ahead of Bolton's
Gary Megson at 4/1. Curbs told The Sun "I'm not bothered, I'm not a gambling
man. I had 15 years at Charlton as outsider to get the sack. "Other people
like to stir things up and make it worse."
Meanwhile, Reports are gathering pace around Upton Park regarding Freddy
Ljungberg's future at the Club - The swedish winger is said to have been on
Lazio's shopping list - with the arrival of Behrami that move could well be
on the cards - it wouldn't do the wage bill any harm either.

HAMMERS TALK: Irons join City in hunt for Morocco defender - Guardian Series
10:12am Thursday 31st July 2008

WEST HAM are slugging it out with Manchester City for the signature of Nancy
full-back Michael Chretien, according to reports. The Daily Mail claims that
Alan Curbishley is keen on Chretien, but he will face stiff competition for
the Moroccan from City boss Mark Hughes. The 24-year-old was expected to
join Sevilla or Real Betis, but is interested in a move to the Premier
League. He said: "My agent is in discussions with Betis, but I am aware of
an English club keen to acquire me. "I don't want to be at Nancy next
season, as I've done enough there. I want to test myself in a top European
league." Chretien has been with French outfit Nancy since 2002, making 174
appearances, while he has also been capped by his country.

Ferdinand fully focused for the Hammers - Guardian Series
9:30am Thursday 31st July 2008

ANTON FERDINAND is looking forward to finally putting a summer of
speculation surrounding his future behind him and getting down to what he
does best with West Ham. The defender has continually been linked with a
move away from Upton Park, with Aston Villa, Spurs, Sunderland and Newcastle
all believed to be vying for his signature. He was even rumoured to have
rejected the Magpies after the Hammers reportedly accepted a £6million bid.
However, Ferdinand said he has no intention of quitting Upton Park and
insists that the speculation will not stand in his way of himn getting in
the best possible shape for West Ham and the new season ahead. "I don't
think about it that kind of thing at all," said the 23-year-old. "If that
was the case then I'm not being professional. "I'm sure if you asked the
fans about me when they see me playing, I don't look like I'm thinking about
other things, other than doing well for West Ham. "I'm under contract and I
love playing for the club. Now I'm just concentrating on getting fit for and
looking forward to the start of the season."
Ferdinand got his fourth consecutive pre-season run-out under his belt in
Tuesday night's 2-0 win over Peterborough United. And his preparations were
given a real test against the League One club's prolific frontman Aaron
McLean. "He is a livewire and a great player, and it was a joy to play
against him," Ferdinand said of McLean. "It was a good game all round.
That's why the gaffer took on it on because they're a good team who pass it
well, which they showed last season to take them into League One."
A classy first-half brace of goals from Craig Bellamy - his second
pre-season double - proved to be the difference between the sides. And,
after a debut season wrecked by an ongoing abdominal injury last term - he
managed just seven starts - Ferdinand, much like boss Alan Curbishley, is
hoping the pacy frontman can start to string a run of games together. "We
need Craig Bellamy to stay fit because he is looking really sharp and took
his goals well," said Ferdinand. "But Carlton Cole also looked very good and
they played well together. "Of course there is also Dean Ashton, who missed
the game because of illness, so from our point of view, the front line is
looking really strong going into the new season."

Curbs closes in on keeper - Setanta
by Jo Carter, 31 July 2008

West Ham are close to signing former Fulham keeper Jan Lastuvka from
Shakhtar Donetsk. The 26-year-old, who spent the 2006/07 season on loan at
Craven Cottage, would provide back-up to Robert Green. The Hammers have been
chasing the Shakhtar Donetsk keeper for a while and had hoped to sign
Lastuvka a fortnight ago, but the two clubs were unable to agree on a price.
Lastuvka has now agreed personal terms and looks set for a move to East
London. He could make his Hammers debut in Friday's friendly at Southampton
and is relishing a return to England. "The offer from West Ham is there,"
Lastuvka told CTK. "The club wants me and going back to the English league
is definitely interesting and alluring."

'New' keeper seems hardly worth having By Steve Turner - UptonSparks.com
Posted on Thursday 31 Jul 2008 13:52:00

West Ham's newest 'signing' Jan Lastuvka (we're loathe to say he's actually
joined, as apparently he's now having a medical and if they find something,
like an alien living in his stomach, he won't be coming) will be a total
understudy to Robert Green.

Now, this isn't a bashing of the player: in fact, I've only ever seen him
play briefly for Fulham (and that didn't really inspire any great confidence
in me then, and I didn't care what happened), but he seems to be a bit of an
'unwanted child'.

This is a player who went to Fulham, the perennial under- or over-achievers
(depending on who you believe or speak to) and couldn't get in the team.

In fact, he got sent home from the loan, back to parent club Shaktar
Donetsk, who signed him back in 2004.

But apparently they just didn't want him, perhaps looking on him like an
unimportant step-child, and loaned him out once more to Bundesliga outfit
VfL Bochum.

Nein!

Guess what: they didn't want him either, and said a big 'Nein!' to the £2
million asking price. (They probably also threw sausages or some other
stereotype at Donetsk as well).

So now he look all set to join the Hammers on loan. Whoop-eee.

If a player gets loaned out three seasons in a row...something isn't quite
right.

"I hope everything will be fine," added Lastuvka. "I am eager for the
experience to train under [goalkeeping coach] Ludek Miklosko. The Premier
League is the best league in the world, so I would like to fight for a
chance."

Well...everyone deserves a chance. But forgive me for not breaking out the
champagne and caviar and ordering a couple of masseuses over this one.

Hard-fought draw at Cambridge - WHUFC
Kevin Keen's West Ham United XI are unbeaten in three matches this pre-season after an away draw
30.07.2008

Cambridge United 0-0 West Ham United XI

Jack Collison returned to his former club on Wednesday night as a West Ham United XI recorded a goalless draw at the Abbey Stadium. The reserve-team captain came through the ranks at Cambridge before moving to the Boleyn Ground three years ago. He has not looked back since, establishing himself as part of Alan Curbishley's first-team squad. Despite the Wales midfielder's presence and an in-form forward line of Freddie Sears and Zavon Hines, Kevin Keen's youthful team could not make the breakthrough against experienced opposition after two previous victories against Billericay Town and Thurrock.
After Collison had just missed with a chance in the first half, Sears came the closest of all in the game as he hit the post with ten minutes to play after rounding the keeper. Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson was another impressive performer, clearing one off the line after entering for Joe Widdowson who had played the previous night in the 2-0 first-team win at Peterborough United. A West Ham United XI will next be in action against Grays Athletic this Saturday afternoon.

West Ham United: Walker, Miller, Widdowson (Eyjolfsson 60), Spence, N'Gala (O'Neill 76), Stokes (Payne 55), Stanislas (Edgar 65), Collison (c), Jeffery, Sears, Hines

Curbishley sees the positives - WHUFC
Another impressive performance and a debut for Valon Behrami have left the manager looking forward
30.07.2008

Alan Curbishley is delighted with the form being shown by his squad after another impressive pre-season display on Wednesday night.

Craig Bellamy took the headlines with two goals early and late in the first half but there were good performances across the pitch. Valon Behrami showed up well at right-back on his debut with Lucas Neill also strong in the left-back role. Matthew Upson and Anton Ferdinand were reunited in the centre of defence for the first time since 12 April while Mark Noble and Scott Parker were a solid midfield duo. Robert Green also underlined his form with a couple of great saves.

The manager said: "The first half was as quick a game as I have seen for a long while. We got off to a great start with scoring early but I think the first 45 minutes was really competitive. I think you had everything there for both teams. Greeny's had to make some saves and we looked good when we attacked." Curbishley added that George McCartney and Lee Bowyer are training while the ill Dean Ashton should have recovered by the weekend to figure in either the Southampton or Ipswich games on Friday and Monday respectively.

James Tomkins is also looking good after a knee knock on England Under-19 duty and Luis Boa Morte and Matthew Etherington continue to be eased back in after minor foot troubles following their first 45 minutes of pre-season action last Thursday. "We are pleased with what has happened so far," said Curbishley. It is tough coming back from the American trip. Coming home some of us were still suffering a little but we got over it [against Peterborough]."

There was particular praise for the progress of Julien Faubert, Parker and Bellamy with Curbishley hoping his team will create enough chances for the strikers to score at least 30 goals this coming season. "We know we have got pace all over the park. We can counterattack and we can defend when we have got to. Parker came back and blocked shots. Centre-halves blocked stuff. It was a good work-out." Added into the mix is new signing Valon Behrami, who began his club career at right-back.

"He is a great athlete and he got involved," said Curbishley. He kept streaking down the line. We are pleased to have got him. He is a versatile player. He can play right-back, can play wide right and can play centre midfield and has played wide left. He is one of those players with a great attitude. I think he could be a great asset."

Stalemate for young Hammers - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 31st July 2008
By: Staff Writer

West Ham's reserves could only manage a stalemate against Blue Square Premier outfit Cambridge United at the Trade Recuitment Stadium tonight.
A young Hammers side - all under 21 bar goalkeeper Jimmy Walker - failed to break the deadlock on a hot summer's night in Cambridge despite creating plenty of goalscoring opportunities. However coach Kevin Keen will be pleased by the clean sheet which extends the reserves unbeaten pre-season run to three games. Striker Freddie Sears went closest to breaking the deadlock with a 25-yard effort that beat keeper Potter but not the woodwork, whilst former Cambridge loanee Jack Jeffery saw his goalbound effort hacked off the line midway through the first half. The hosts best chance of the game fell to Lee McEvilly; his effort, an audacious lob, narrowly cleared the bar. Kevin Keen's side have the chance to extend their unbeaten pre-season run to four matches this coming Saturday when they visit Grays.

West Ham United: Walker, Miller, Widdowson (Eyjolfsson 60), Spence, N'Gala (O'Neill 76), Stokes (Payne 55), Stanislas (Edgar 65), Collison (c), Jeffery, Sears, Hines.

Cambridge United: Potter, Gleeson (Bexfield 60), Coulson, Hoyte, Tonkin (Collins 79), Parkinson (Youngs 46), Carden, Convery (Quinton 60), Pitt (Farrell 33); Willmott (Bussens 79), Beesley (McEvilly 46).

Injury latest - KUMB

Several players are still some way away from full fitness - despite hopes that all but one would be ready for the start of the new season. Geroge McCartney, Lee Bowyer, Kieron Dyer, Nigel Quashie, Danny Gabbidon, James Collins, Luis Boa Morte, Matthew Etherington, Jonathan Spector and James Tomkins are all currently injured with just over two weeks to go before the 2008/09 Premier League campaign kicks off with the visit of Wigan.
Although most are expected to return prior to 16th August - bar Spector, who will be sidelined until the end of the year - few will be fit enough to play in a Premier League fixture, having had little or no pre-season - something that Alan Pardew blamed for the failure of a number of his players to perform in his final season.
West Ham United have confirmed that McCartney and Bowyer - whose last appearance came in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham back on 9th February - are back in full training, whilst Boa Morte and Etherington are being 'eased back' having experienced 'minor foot troubles'. Tomkins, who took a knock during England's ill-fated under-19 European Championships jaunt is said to be 'looking good' whilst Dyer has targetted the pre-season friendly at Ipswich on 4th August as his comeback game.
Meanwhile, centre-half Collins is said to be making good progress with his cruciate injury and could be back by the start of September. Collins' Welsh team mate Gabbidon is still recovering from therapy to rectify a 'stomach and pelvic problem' whilst Quashie is still out of action, some 16 months after sustaining a 'foot problem'.
West Ham announced sweeping changes to their medical set-up last week. The announcement followed the findings of a team of experts from Roehampton University charged with improving the club's procedures. A number of new appointments were announced; Nikos Tzouroudis, previously employed by a number of major European clubs has been hired to overview operations. Italian osteopath Marco Cesarini and rehabilitation physiotherapist Giorgio Gasparini, who has worked with the Italian national squad also join the team.

CEO Scott Duxbury told whufc.com: "The Board and manager have taken these decisive steps to ensure the club has the very best support in place for the entire coaching and playing staff. "We sought the best independent advice and over recent months have been looking at home and across the continent for the leading experts in the field. "I am delighted we have been able to strengthen our existing operation in this way and am confident the benefits will be considerable."

Alan Curbishley says he is looking forward to following the progress of the club's recent Academy acquisitions from abroad - and the prospect of further arrivals.

Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson (Iceland), Balint Bajner (Hungary), Filip Modelski (Poland, yet to be officially confirmed) and previously, goalkeeper Marek Stech (Czech Republic) are all at West Ham's Academy which expanded its reach recently with the arrival of United's first Technical Director, Gianluca Nani, whose brief it it to bring the best young European talent to East London.

With more possible future stars set to follow from both the UK and abroad, Alan Curbishley admits to being excited by the prospect. The boys are young, but they do have a lot of potential," he told the Ilford Recorder. "We have done a little bit of work in this area and have got at least four youngsters into the club so far. We are looking to do some more. "[Holmar] is young, a good athlete and a good shape. He would have come on the American trip, only he picked up a little groin strain. But what he has shown us in training already has delighted all of us. "[Balint] is a big centre forward. Tony Carr and the Academy department were very impressed with him, and he deserved a chance at the club." Meanwhile 18-year-old Stech was a 70th-minute replacement for Robert Green in Tuesday night's 2-0 pre-season friendly win at Peterborough.

Curbs on new signing - KUMB

Alan Curbishley has been singing the praises of the club's latest signing, Swiss international Valon Behrami. The 23-year-old defender/midfielder made his debut in United colours at Peterborough last night, playing for just over an hour in the 2-0 win. And Curbishley was in no doubt that the versatile £5million signing from Lazio will prove to be a key player in his team this season. "He is a great athlete and he got involved," Curbishley told whufc.com. "We are pleased to have got him. "He is a versatile player. He can play right-back, can play wide right and can play centre-midfield - and has played wide left. He is one of those players with a great attitude. I think he could be a great asset."
On the game itself, which was won by a Craig Bellamy brace, Curbishley added: "The first half was as quick a game as I have seen for a long while. We got off to a great start with scoring early but I think the first 45 minutes were really competitive. "It is tough coming back from the American trip. Your name's not down, you're not coming in - KUMB

West Ham United will be holding an open training session tomorrow morning - but only season ticket holders and club members are invited.

The Boleyn Ground opens for business at 9:30am tomorrow (with the squad expected on the field at around 10:30am) for another of the popular open training days, where fans are allowed a sneak preview at the first team in action as they prepare for the forthcoming season.

However this year those supporters without a season ticket or club membership will be barred from entering; a decision criticised by several supporters today.

With many thousands of long-term fans now priced out of watching their team play live, the open training sessions were always an excellent opportunity for those unable to afford the cost of watching top-flight English football to see their heroes in action.

However Harry Redknapp's 'open-door' policy is long gone, and year by year supporters' access to players has become more and more restricted - so much so that now only those able to pay the club an annual subscription, be that in terms of membership or purchasing a season ticket, are privileged enough to be able to attend.

Additionally, those wishing to attend tomorrow's session have been informed that there will be 'no time for a formal autograph session' - although keen youngsters are still expected to be able to grab those signatures they most fervently seek.

Cynically, some might say, the open training session follows the day of the new home shirt launch - which will of course be available in the stadium store tomorrow.

Only at West Ham: top five PR blunders

5. September 2002: Brown - I know you are but what am I?

Former Chairman Terry Brown stunned United fans when he claimed in a private letter to a supporter that if the club's young stars (namely Cole, Carrick and Defoe) were to leave it would be due to 'disgraceful treatment they have received from supporters'. Relegation at the end of that season - due in no small part to a lack of investment by the club's board - didn't exactly help either.

4. January 2000: Hell freezes over

West Ham announce via their website (whufc.com) that 'Hell will freeze over before today's match with Chelsea is cancelled', following rumours of a postponement on web forums on the morning of the game. An hour before kick-off, the game is postponed by match officials due to adverse weather conditions.

3. May 2007: Benny balls-up

The club proudly announce on their website (whufc.com) that Yossi Benayoun has finally agreed to sign a new five-year deal with the club, putting to bed rumours linking the Israeli with a move to Liverpool; six weeks later he completes a £5million switch to Merseyside. (more)

2. December 2003: Terry Brown's 'Ratner' moment

Then-Chairman Terry Brown was forced into making a swift about-turn after he said of striker Jermain Defoe 'everyone knows that boy's not right in the head' in an off-the-cuff statement to shocked shareholders during the club's AGM. Two months later Brown was clearly proved right when the diminutive goalscorer signed for Tottenham. (more)

1. July 2003: No standing, club tell disabled fan

Disabled season ticket-holder Paul Reynolds - who suffers from paraplegia and is therefore unable to walk - received a (circular) letter from the club asking him not to stand during matches. The club later issue an apology to Paul. (more)

(And the biggest urban myth)

1. March 2007: Eggy's 60 large

Eggert Magnusson came under fire when, in an exclusive interview with KUMB.com, he claimed that the average Hammers fan earned £60,000 per year leading to uproar amongst supporters. Except that what he actually said was 'the average salary of a West Ham supporter who comes to the games here is second highest in the league ... I think it's around £60,000 per year.'

Hammers boss unfazed by bookmakers' odds

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley claims he does not feel under any added pressure despite being the favourite to be axed. The Hammers chief is leading the market with the bookmakers as they take bets on the first Premier League boss to part with his club. However, the former Charlton chief insists he is unconcerned by his perceived position at the front of the sack race. "I'm not bothered," he told The Sun. "I'm not a gambling man. I had 15 years at Charlton as outsider to get the sack. But I don't think I'm under pressure. "Other people like to stir things up and make it worse." Curbishley is favourite ahead of Bolton boss Gary Megson and Newcastle's Kevin Keegan.

West Ham's youthful side included a couple of familiar faces - former U's loanee striker Jack Jeffery and former U's schoolboy Jack Collison. Included alongside them were veteran goalkeeper Jim Walker, England U19 defender Jordan Spence, and highly rated youngsters with Premiership experience in midfielder Tony Stoke and striker Fred Sears.

The young Hammers started the game on the offensive and enjoyed most of the early possession, and after just four minutes some intricate football on the edge of the area ended with a Sears shot at Potter from close range.

Moments later Potter was caught outside his area and Stanislas latched onto the ball out on the right wing and centred it, but as Collison went for the shot the backtracking defence scrambled the ball clear. Stanislas was involved again on 14 and again picked out Collison from the right but the young Wales international fired wide from inside the six yard box.

A minute later United threatened the West Ham goal for the first time when Beesley and Willmott combined well on the edge of the area but Beesley fired well wide. The U's were enjoying a good spell at this stage and on 22 Willmott made room for a shot but also fired wide, and on the half hour it was West Ham again as Sears sprinted clear from the halfway line, leaping away from Hoyte's challenge at the byline and pulling the ball back for Jack Jeffery, only to see it blocked by Anthony Tonkin.

The rebound fell to Collison who blazed miles wide, and three minutes later Sears was again through on goal but fired high over the bar.

Captain for the night Tonkin made a good forward run on 34 and picked out Andy Parkinson who was brought down on the edge of the area, and Mark Beesley's free kick clipped the base of the wall as they jumped and trundled through to the keeper.

Dan Gleeson charged down the right five minutes before half-time and crossed for substitute Ben Farrell, who had replaced the limping Courtney Pitt on 33, but he decided against the shot when perhaps he should have done, instead teeing up Willmott whose shot was blocked almost as it left his boot.

The half ended with West Ham left-back Joe Widdowson making a buccaneering run into the area but Potter made a brave block on the edge of the six yard box and then smothered the rebound as it came back off the West Ham player.

A satisfactory half ended with the Hammers ahead on chances but United standing firm and battling well to keep the scores level at half-time.

Half-time 0-0

Gary Brabin made two half-time changes, bringing on Lee McEvilly and Tom Youngs for Mark Beesley and Andy Parkinson, and switching to a 4-3-3 formation.

United made a positive start to the second half and took the game to the visitors from the restart, with Willmott cutting in from the right two minutes in and hitting a low swerving drive from the edge of the area straight at the keeper.

Tom Youngs had an impressive half and on 51 he danced to the edge of the box and picked out Willmott's run but keeper Walker was quickly off his line to thwart the young striker. Two minutes later Hoyte's mis-kick almost led to disaster for United as he presented the ball to the opposition midway inside the United half, but Stanislas' angled shot was saved by Potter.

On 56 minutes came the move of the match as Tonkin linked with Mark Convery on the overlap down the left, Convery passed to Tom Youngs who held the ball up before returning it to the midfielder. Convery's shot was charged down but only cleared as far as Gleeson who hoisted a cross into the centre, and it was a keeper's nightmare as the ball and Lee McEvilly arrived at the same time, the ball coming off McEvilly's head and just over the bar while Walker ended in a heap.

Brabin made another double change on the hour to bring on Darren Quinton and trialist Pat Bexfield for Convery and Gleeson, and two minutes later Zavon Hines did well down the left and linked well with Jack Jeffery who found Sears, but the young striker was thwarted again, this time by Coulson's block.

On 63 Youngs received a throw-in 18 yards out and fed the ball to Quinton but he could only shoot straight at the keeper, and three minutes later Bexfield crossed from deep on the right and McEvilly's towering header at the far post was hacked away by West Ham sub Eyjolfsson.

With 20 minutes remaining the visitors worked an opening for England Under-19 defender Jordan Spence as he advanced but fired straight at Potter from 18 yards. A lively half continued to provide openings for both teams and on 76 a brilliant through ball found Sears sprinting away from the defence into the area, but Tonkin got back to get his toe to the ball and put it behind for a corner.

Sears was involved again a minute later but although his 25-yarder beat Potter it crashed against the post, and the young Premiership goalscorer must have wondered what he had to do to score against United tonight.

Tom Youngs set up McEvilly for an audacious lob from 20 yards that cleared the bar by mere inches, and Youngs was involved again on 81 when his great ball released Craig Bussens into the area but the United substitute was caught in two minds about whether to shoot or pass and the chance evaporated.

Three minutes later that man Sears raced onto a through ball into the area and was driven wide as Potter advanced out of his goal, eventually sending an off-balance shot wide, and he had another chance as he burst into the area on 89 but this time Hoyte held him off at the expense of a corner, which United defended to keep their first clean sheet of this pre-season.

A load of Mattocks? - KUMB

By: Staff Writer

Leicester City defender Joe Mattock insists it is business as usual despite being linked with a move to West Ham United. A number of sources have claimed that the Hammers have been chasing the England under-19 defender since the turn of the year, with various reports of failed bids and serious interest.
But the 18-year-old Leicester-born full-back told the Leicester Mercury that he was concentrating on the coming season with his current club. Referring to United's reported interest, he said: "Things like that happen but I am just focusing on what I am doing on the pitch. "This time there has been a real pre-season and we have got to know each other as a group. "Hopefully we have a real team spirit because that's what we need."

West Ham and Manchester City are chasing highly-rated Nancy defender Michael Chretien. The 24-year-old Morocco international, who can play right midfield as well as right back, had been expected to join Sevilla or Real Betis but would prefer England. He said: 'My agent is in discussions with Betis, but I am aware of an English club keen to acquire me. I don't want to be at Nancy next season, as I've done enough there. I want to test myself in a top European league.'

Interest Increases For West Ham - The Ugly Inside.net
Thursday 31 Jul 2008 08:08:20 by TUI Staff

A surge in interest looks set to boost West Ham Gate. A steady flow of ticket sales in the last few days looks set to boost the West ham attendance after a very slow start. Up until last week sales had been brisker at Upton Park with the Hammers selling 2,000 tickets fairly quickly, now more have been sent and with some being held back for sale on the day, it looks like it will be a fairly full away section with 3,000 away fans. Saints fans though have been slower to respond and its only been the last few days that have seen ticket sales start to pick up. The Club arre worried that it could be another last minute walk up creating mayhem at both the box office and turnstiles and are urging fans to try and get to St Mary's either well ahead of the game, when they can take advantage of the parking facilities, or failing that as early as possible on the night. Even accounting for this late rush though its going to be a far lower attendance than for any other Ted Bates Trophy game with a gate expected of maybe 12-13000.#

Tickets are on sale now at £15 for adults, £10 for seniors/teens and £5 for kids, as well publicised if you purchase a ticket for the visit of the Hammers you can get your Stoke ticket half price.

Lazio want the favour returned with Ljungberg By Wes Evans - fansonlline.net
Posted on Wednesday 30 Jul 2008 15:35:00

'Ciao, bella!'

That's Italian, and exactly the language the model, injury table frequenter and occasional footballer Freddie Ljungberg could be using for the forthcoming season.

That's right, for the sprightly sum of just €4 million or £3.1 million, depending on where you are (Europe or England...that's right, we still hold on to the pound like a kid with an ice lolly that melted long ago. But we still keep hold of it cos it's OUR LOLLY!) Ljungberg could be off to Lazio after they sold Valon Behrami to the Hammers.

According to Italian fish and chip paper holder La Repubblica, Lazio (a side which plays football in Rome, but ISN'T CALLED Rome...Roma are. Think Everton and Liverpool if you're having issues) want Ljungberg in a bid to 'stabilise their midfield'.

Captain of the ship

It seems they've seen his massive wages, and the fact he was half-good at Arsenal and decided he's the one that can steady the ship from the stands whenever he gets another hamstring injury from a tooth problem.

It may seem like a paltry sum, and would be if he has a cracking season over there, but his wages, and the getting rid of, would certainly please the West Ham board.

Now, if only I can get them to buy my car...only done 140,000, but it used to be a real performer. Costs a lot in upkeep though, and needs frequent repairs. Yours for £3 million.

Yossi link dismissed - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 30th July 2008
By: Staff Writer

Stories linking Yossi Benayoun with a return to the Boleyn Ground have been
dismissed by a club insider. Several papers carry a story today claiming
that Israeli international Benayoun is in line for a return to East London
just 12 months after joining Liverpool. However a club source has dismissed
the rumour, adding that Benayoun is not currently in Alan Curbishley's
thoughts - despite stories claiming that the Hammers had made tentative
enquiries as to the 28-year-old midfielder's availability. Liverpool boss
Rafa Benitez said last night: "We're still trying to sign the players we
need and if we need to sell someone, we will."
Meanwhile Benayoun's agent Ronan Katzav told SkySports this morning: There
has been no contact or talks with any club about Yossi. "All summer there
has been speculation but he has a contract with Liverpool. I don't believe
they want to sell Yossi and he is just concentrating on life at Liverpool.
"It is nice that everybody is interested in Yossi, but from our point of
view he is only thinking about Liverpool."
Benayoun left East London under a cloud after reneging on an agreement to
sign a new five-year deal once Liverpool's interest became apparent. As a
result he was booed constantly on his return to Upton Park last season.

Curbs hails 'new signing' Bellamy - SSN
West Ham boss praises striker
Last updated: 30th July 2008

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley has hailed the return to fitness of Craig
Bellamy as 'like a new signing'. Bellamy continued his impressive return to
form and fitness with two goals in Tuesday's friendly win over Peterborough.
The Welshman endured a miserable first season at Upton Park with injuries
restricting him to just nine games for the Hammers. Curbishley is delighted
have Bellamy back firing on all cylinders ahead of the start of the new
season.
"He has been working ever so hard," Curbishley told Sky Sports News.
"Obviously he finished the season and got himself fit at the end of season
so he has had a bit of a run at it and maybe he has a little bit longer than
perhaps the others. "It is great for us. It is just like a new signing come
back. "Dean Ashton scored a couple the other day and now Craig Bellamy has
come back and got a couple of goals so it is terrific for us."

decide to offload the player. However, Benayoun's agent, Ronen Katzav says
he has had no contact with any interested clubs and that the player is

Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun in line for West Ham return - Telegraph
Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun is in line for a stunning return to
former club West Ham a year after leaving Upton Park for Anfield, according
to reports.
By Matt Lawless
Last Updated: 11:22AM BST 30 Jul 2008

Benayoun has struggled to hold down a regular first team starting place
since his £4.5 million arrival on Merseyside and his position at the club is
under threat as Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is tasked with raising
sufficient funds for a renewed Gareth Barry bid. The Israel international
was highly revered during his two seasons in east London after Alan Pardew
made him a £2.5 million signing from Spanish side Racing Santander following
the club's promotion to the Premier League in 2005. And Benayoun's return
would be a popular decision among the West Ham faithful, doing much to
relieve growing discontent towards manager Alan Curbishley which became
increasingly apparent in the latter stages of last season. Unprecedented
pressure has mounted on Curbishley to improve the club's fortunes this
season but there is already concern that he has made just two signings so
far this summer in unproven Icelandic quantity Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson and
Swiss utility man Valon Behrami, a £5 million capture from Lazio. Nolberto
Solano, the Peru international who was released by West Ham at the end of
last season, revealed that expectation on Curbishley is at an optimum for
the forthcoming campaign, warning the former Charlton manager could lose his
job if he does not consolidate the club in the top eight. Manchester City
manager Mark Hughes is also understood to be weighing up a move for Benayoun
and could out-bid West Ham by tabling a £6 million offer for the playmaker.
Benitez confirmed he needs to sell players in an effort to revive his
interest in £18 million rated Barry as the deal for the Aston Villa player
hangs in the balance. Benayoun, who has made 30 appearances for Liverpool
scoring 11 goals, joins Xabi Alonso, Jermaine Pennant, Andriy Voronin and
Steve Finnan as the likely candidates to leave the club in the coming weeks.
"We're still trying to sign the players we need and if we need to sell
someone, we will," said Benitez. "If we can do the Barry deal before the end
of the transfer window, we will continue to try - we will always continue to
improve our squad."
West Ham, meanwhile, returned from their nine-day tour of America with a 2-0
win over League One outfit Peterborough United last night. New signing
Behrami made his debut at right back in place of captain Lucas Neill, who
started at left-back, as Craig Bellamy continued his impressive pre-season
form scoring both goals to make it four in three outings since his injury
comeback.

Hammers trio set for return against Southampton - Guardian Series
9:20am Friday 1st August 2008

ALAN Curbishley is hoping to get a number of key players back for West Ham's
pre-season trip to Southampton tonight. The Irons recorded a 2-0 friendly
win over League One side Peterborough United at London Road on Tuesday
night. But after the game Curbishley raised concerns that the club's
gruelling pre-season schedule - thanks largely to the nine-day tour to North
America - could leave his players with burn-out. "The America trip was tough
and one or two are still suffering because of it," said Curbishley. "I can't
rotate it at the moment, so some players are being flogged a bit and that's
not what you want in pre-season."
Dean Ashton (illness), Luis Boa Morte (bruised foot) and Matthew Etherington
(rested as precaution) all sat out of the clash with Posh. However, the trio
could be back for the trip to St Mary's Stadium tonight, although the game
looks to be too early for George McCartney, who has missed the pre-season
games with a hamstring problem. "I'm hoping Ashton, Boa Morte and
Etherington will be back for the Southampton game, and for McCartney to get
something over the weekend, perhaps a bit of the Ipswich game on Monday,"
said Curbishley. "When they do get themselves right, and a few others who
are close like Lee Bowyer and James Tomkins get back, then we'll have a bit
of a squad."

West Ham: (from) Green, Stech, Walker, Neill, Behrami, McCartney, Widdowson,
Ferdinand, Davenport, Upson, Eyjolfsson, Noble, Parker, Collison, Mullins,
Faubert, Stanislas, Etherington, Boa Morte, Reid, Stokes, Hines, Sears,
Ashton, Bellamy, Cole.

Posh impress Hammers boss - PeterboroughToday.com

WEST Ham manager Alan Curbishley has joined the Posh fan club. Curbishley
admitted that Posh gave the Premier League Hammers the best possible
work-out in last night's friendly at London Road. West Ham won the match 2-0
thanks to two first-half Craig Bellamy goals, but Posh were unfortunate not
to score a couple of goals themselves. Curbishley admitted: "The first half
in particular was one of the fastest friendlies I've seen and full credit to
Peterborough because they made it a proper test for us. We played well going
forward, but so did they and Robert Green had to make some excellent saves.
"Peterborough were very impressive and will surely have a good season. There
were some tasty tackles flying in as well, but I didn't mind that – it was a
real game of football."
Posh manager Darren Ferguson also enthused about his side. Posh have lost
their last two friendlies, but Ferguson still believes they are peaking at
just the right time with the start of the League One season just a
week-and-a-half away. Ferguson said: "We played some great attacking
football and the result was very harsh on us. I couldn't believe we were 2-0
down at half-time because Aaron Mclean, George Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith
delivered some outstanding football. "We worked on a lot of attacking play
in training on Monday and to see the lads put it into practice was very
pleasing. It was an excellent performance from us. "I was very pleased with
them all to be fair even though the two goals we conceded were avoidable as
they came from huge lumps forward. Craig Bellamy is a clever player though
and we won't face many like him in League One – his goals were good play by
him, but lapses of concentration on our part. "It was another great work-out
for us and we are definitely moving in the right direction. There is real
competition for places in all areas of the field and that is very
important."
The West Ham friendly attracted a crowd just short of 5,500 to London Road.
The kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes after large queues formed at the
ticket office.

Shorey unmoved by transfer talk - Setanta
by Chris Stanton, 30 July 2008

Reading's England international left back Nicky Shorey insists he is not
buying in to speculation over his future. West Ham and Portsmouth are the
teams most commonly mentioned in connection with the 27-year-old who, by
manager Steve Coppell and chief executive Nick Howe's own admission, is
unlikely to remain at The Madejski Stadium following Reading's relegation to
The Championship. Shorey told the Reading Evening Post: "There is
speculation about everyone, not just me. I have had it for the last two
years now and I will just get on with it. The chief exec can say what he
likes about my future. I won't be commenting on it. I will just focus on my
football. "I am concentrating on getting fit and I will let other people
waffle on. It's all just paper talk. "I have been with Reading a long time.
We've got a good group of lads, but what the future holds no-one knows.
"Everyone wants Premier League football. We want to get back there and
hopefully we will. "But it's gone for the moment. These things happen. We
weren't good enough last season. All we can do now is try to get back up."
Andre Bikey has been more outspoken about his future and this week revealed
his intention is to leave The Royals. However Coppell insists there has been
no formal interest in the Cameroon international. Coppell said: "Like the
rest of the players, if anyone comes in – as long as it's a realistic offer
– we will put it to the player and he can make his own mind up. "He wants to
be at the Olympics and I think if I was a player it would be exciting, but I
think he will be aware that our season starts before he comes back and other
people are likely to be in pole position. "He's played in World Cup games in
the summer and all the players in national sides talk about playing wherever
and all of a sudden he finds himself playing in the Championship so I think
he would not find it attractive, but as yet I'm not aware of any interest in
him."

Etherington back in the fray - WHUFC
After a long absence, Matthew Etherington is the latest first-teamer to make their playing return this summer
29.07.2008

Matthew Etherington is glad to be back in action after coming through his first taste of first-team football for more than five months.

The left winger got a scheduled 45 minutes in the 3-2 defeat by the MLS All-Stars last Thursday night on the state of the art Fieldturf surface in Toronto although it remains to be seen whether he will play again against his former club Peterborough United on Tuesday. "It was my first bit of action since the start of February so I was just pleased to be out there to be honest," Etherington said, having been declared fit to play after his groin troubles.

"With the current injury I have had, it was probably not the best surface for me to have my first game on but it was good to be out there and I got 45 minutes under my belt. It was always the plan for me just to play a half. I am looking forward to the remainder of the pre-season games. I am sure Peterborough will be a tough game, Darren Ferguson has done very well there."

The midweek contest will be a far cry from the high-profile match against the MLS All-Stars and Etherington was left upbeat by the experience. "It was a good game to be involved in. It was only our third game back and they are in the middle of their pre-season but it was good to be involved and they are games you want to play in. They are a lot more into their season than we are but the atmosphere was great and it was enjoyable."

The first-half run-out for the 26-year-old Etherington was followed by Luis Boa Morte in the second half. In both players' absence against Columbus Crew the previous weekend, Kyel Reid occupied the left flank and turned in a solid performance. After the Peterborough fixture, a West Ham United XI will go to Cambridge United on Wednesday evening.

Bellamy at the double again - WHUFC
The Wales captain scored his third and fourth goals of the summer in a fine win at Peterborough
29.07.2008

Peterborough United 0-2 West Ham United

Craig Bellamy was on target twice as West Ham United won with a strong performance at Peterborough tonight.

The striker showed his growing sharpness by grabbing his second brace of the pre-season so far. He put West Ham United into the lead at London Road after just three minutes and then followed it up with a second just before half-time. The match marked the debut in West Ham United colours for new signing Valon Behrami who put in a strong performance at right-back in a defence which saw Matthew Upson in his second game in three days, partnering Anton Ferdinand in the centre. Captain Lucas Neill switched to left -back.

West Ham United got off to a perfect start, when Bellamy picked up on a good ball from Scott Parker. He made a good run before rounding Posh keeper Joe Lewis and sliding the ball into the back of the net. Julien Faubert was linking up well in a bustling midfield alongside Parker, Mark Noble and Kyel Reid, while Behrami was not afraid to get into the mix with a number of tackles to win the ball.

Peterborough had chances and tested visiting keeper Robert Green in the first half, but the robust Green was in no mood to let the home side in, as he made a one-handed save to deny an acrobatic shot by Aaron Mclean and a finger-tip save to deny Peterborough on the half-hour mark. Craig Mackail-Smith and Posh captain Craig Morgan then had near chances before West Ham United went further ahead.

The goal came in the 42nd minute in a move started at the back by Neill who sent over a good ball which was met perfectly by the forward-running Bellamy. The Welsh international simply lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net. There were no changes at the start of the second half for Alan Curbishley's men and it was an equally good start as Behrami and Noble tried shots which went wide.

Peterborough were in determined mood still and were trying to force West Ham United back as much as possible - getting into the box and sending the ball just wide, with McLean and Mackail-Smith testing the defence. Behrami was replaced on 66 minutes - to rapturous applause from the visiting fans who he acknowledged by clapping his hands in their direction - by Joe Widdowson who was making his first appearance since returning home from the successful tour of the US and Canada.

Peterborough came within an inch of grabbing something only for George Boyd's shot to hit the post and come bouncing back out. Curbishley made a double substitution on 69 minutes with Green replaced by young goalkeeper Marek Stech and Bellamy making way for Freddie Sears. Alfie Potter gave Stech his first real test on 74 minutes but the upcoming keeper got down well to save.

At the other end, Sears ran on to a ball on the right-hand side sending a good cross over only for it to sail just wide. Junior Stanislas came on for Reid on 82 minutes followed by Jack Collison who replace Anton Ferdinand minutes later. Sears again tested the home defence with a swinging shot that went wide of the post. It proved to be another good work-out for Curbishley's men who finished the game as strongly as they had started.

Peterborough United: Joe Lewis, Russell Martin, Shane Blackett, Craig Morgan, (capt), Charlie Lee, Aaron McLean, George Boyd, Dean Keates, Craig Mackail-Smith, Chris Whelpdale, Tom Williams.
Subs: Chris Westwood, Scott Rendell, Micah Hyde, James McKeown, Kieran Charnock, Alfie Potter, Paul Coutts, Shaun Batt.

West Ham United: Robert Green, Lucas Neill (Capt), Anton Ferdinand, Matthew Upson, Valon Behrami, Scott Parker, Julien Faubert, Craig Bellamy, Kyel Reid, Carlton Cole, Mark Noble.

66min - Widdowson is on for Behrami. It has been a good first appearance for the Swiss international. Curbishley gives him a pat on the back. ANother change for Posh as Charlie Lee makes way for Micah Hyde. With Widdowson on, Neill has reverted to right-back.

64min - Outstanding tackle by Upson on Batt. Joe Widdowson is getting ready to come on.

63min - Good play by Boyd ends with a shot at goal that Upson clears. He worked his way well into the area on the left-hand side.

60min - Four changes for Peterborough. Chris Westwood, Paul Coutts, Scott Rendell and Shaun Batt are on for Shane Blackett, Aaron Mclean, Dean Keates and Chris Whelpdale.

60min - Upson then gets in the way of Reid's shot from the resulting corner. Nothing the England defender could do about it.

59min - Posh free-kick just outside the area comes to nothing. Parker sets Bellamy away on the counterattack and Bellamy tees up Reid, only for the left-winger to be denied by a last-ditch block.

58min - Bellamy nearly sets Cole on goal but the pass is just too strong and it runs through to Lewis.

56min - Noble lofts one just wide after being picked out by Parker. The two have combined well in midfield.

54min - Behrami flashes a shot wide of the post. It came at the end of a sweeping move.

53min - Dean Keates goes close with a half-volley after more good approach play. Green had it covered though.

51min - Noble shoots for goal but Lewis was never worried. Boyd breaks at the other end but Behrami and Ferdinand close well. Peterborough retain possession and Boyd should have scored with a free header from Martin's cross.

49min - Upson has looked comfortable on only his second game this summer. He played 75 minutes at Thurrock on Saturday.

47min - Neill nearly gets Cole away. He has looked comfortable at left-back, a position he knows well from his time at Blackburn Rovers.

46min - We are under way with no half-time changes.

Half-time - 0-2

45min - Cole turns well after receiving the ball with his back to goal. His shot just flashes wide.

44min - Neill is back defending now and does well to shepherd the ball back to Green. Bellamy now has four goals in his three games this pre-season.

42min - GOAL! - Another delightful goal by Bellamy. He got in behind and chipped the keeper superbly after a long pass forward from Neill.

40min - The refere is talking to Faubert and Williams. No cards are issued though.

38min - Behrami goes down in the box after neat build-up involving Bellamy and Parker. Only a corner is given though. From it, Reid flashes a shot that is not too far from Lewis's right-hand post.

34min - Behrami is penalised for a foul on George Boyd just outside the penalty area. Moments earlier, Boyd had forced another good save from Green. Russell Martin's free-kick is too long.

31min - Peterborough are not giving the visitors an inch. There is lots of pressure on the ball and Alan Curbishley's side are having to be on their toes. A good game.

29min - Behrami is enjoying this. He gets the better of two men before laying the ball off. When forced into a defensive clearance seconds later, he denies Mclean with a timely challenge.

28min - Bellamy's free-kick goes straight into the wall. After his follow-up is blocked, Peterborough break and Behrami is penalised for a foul.

27min - The temperature is rising. Cole back on does well after Faubert leaves two defenders in his wake. However, the West Ham United striker is fouled 25 yards from goal.

25min - Noble is penalised for a foul. Peterborough have the chance to cause trouble in the area but Neill clears and then Ferdinand puts pressure on the ball to deny a shot on goal.

23min - A lovely flick by Behrami nearly creates an opening in the penalty area. Bellamy is then flagged for offside.

21min - Green tips over from Peterborough captain Craig Morgan's header.

19min - Cole is off the field getting treatment after appearing to be winded by the ball. Faubert meanwhile crosses again but the danger is cleared.

18min - A fantastic one-handed save by Robert Green denies Aaron McLean after the Peterborough No9 was able to acrobatically connect with a cross into the box,

15min - Good tracking by Cole to deny Tom Williams. Alan Curbishley will be pleased with the efforts this evening.

12min - Kyel Reid does well to find space on the left before fizzing a cross into the area. It just eludes the away attackers though.

10min - Faubert wins a corner and takes it himself from the right. Cole flicks on but no one is able to meet it.

9min - West Ham United are dominating the play with Carlton Cole and Bellamy seeing lots of the ball and Noble and Parker lively behind.

7min - Lucas Neill lofts a pass forward for Noble but Lewis is just able to claim.

5min - Faubert strides clear through the middle. He gets 30 yards from goal and then tries his luck from range. The play is quickly switched and a good sliding tackle by Parker clears the danger.

5min - Valon Behrami plays a neat pass inside to Parker. The play is switched to the left flank but Peterborough gain possession.

3min - GOAL! 0-1 Craig Bellamy races away from the defence after Scott Parker's pass and slots the ball in after roundig Joe Lewis.

1min - Peterborough get us under way. However, the ball is won quickly by the visitors and Julien Faubert races away on the right before a strong tackle.

Ladies cruise to Lewes win - WHUFC
Tony Marshall's side are looking good for the new season after an impressive weekend performance
29.07.2008

West Ham United 8-1 Lewes

West Ham United Ladies have enjoyed a tremendous start to their pre-season campaign with a fine victory against Lewes following last week's 2-0 against Aston Villa.

The win against Lewes on Sunday was the first game played by Tony Marshall's side at the Ship Lane home of Thurrock FC, their new home for the 2008/09 campaign. The impressive stadium has a fitting surface for the Ladies' passing game. It was also significant because it was away to Lewes last year that Marshall and assistant Alex Bonner's Southern Premier League hopefuls began the previous pre-season - going down 3-1 on a disappointing day.

What a difference a year makes with a side that included five new signings and without both first choice strikers, it was a performance full of pace and power with the goals spread between six players. The match included full debuts for striker Leah Cowan, who joins from Arsenal, and also Rosey Sullivan an England U-17 centre back signed from Leyton Orient.

The temperatures were in the 80's but after the hard work put in to date on fitness the girls begun the game at full speed with Jess Barling opening the scoring with a 25 yarder placed into the top corner after five minutes quickly followed by a Sam Pittuck cross shot and a very neat left foot finish from Claire Rogers - both from outside the box.

Some very good one-touch play led to new signing Cowans receiving the ball at her feet on the penalty spot who turned sharply and side stepped two defenders and placed the ball in the bottom corner. Finally a sweet passing move ended with a superb cross field ball from Claire Rogers met by Natalie Grafton at the far post. Other positives were Toni Munro not having to make a save and vice-captain Carly Roache leading by example.

After the break, Lewes struck a consolation but normal service was resumed when Natalie Grafton beat the defence to score before Pittuck added a second. The final goal of the night came when Dani Hoy tapped in from a Natalie Grafton cross. The pre-season games continue thick and fast with Chelsea, of the Northern Premier League, on Thursday before a match away to another team from that division in Broxbourne FC on Sunday.

The pre-season had begun on 22 July with a 2-0 win at Aston Villa after five weeks of intensive fitness and conditioning work at Chadwell Heath. It was a chance for a first look at most of the season's new signings and also allowed Marshall to give some Under-16s, treble winners last season, knowledge of a higher level of football. A towering header from Julia Stepford and a close-range nod from Pittuck did the damage just before half-time.

Much of the good progress can be pointed to the summer programme. Marshall said: "After a great end to last season which highlighted we have the ability to push for promotion we decided that we would commence pre-season early on 17 June. This was a week of testing and planning for the senior squad as last season we highlighted a couple of weaknesses in our fitness levels and also squad size.

"We have brought in the expertise of an outside fitness trainer Roy Nixon who has been focusing on core strength, stamina and speed and the girls have been working very hard. We have also utilised the services of Craig Smith who works at the WHU academy as a conditioning coach helping the girls on their diet and stretching and recovery techniques." Praise has also been given to Academy coach Paul Heffer for his support.

Bellamy brace beats Boro'... - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 29th July 2008
By: A Different Staff Writer

Two first half goals from Craig Bellamy were enough to give United victory over Peterborough United at London Road this evening. Bellamy made a welcome return to the first XI having been spared the trials of Toronto's plastic pitch against the MLS All Stars. The match also marked the first appearance of Valeron Behrami following his move from Lazio. A notable absentee was Dean Ashton though the striker is expected to return for Friday's trip to Southampton. Hammers took the lead in the 4th minute as Bellamy latched onto a Scott Parker pass and rounded the 'keeper before slotting into an empty net. The Welsh striker doubled the lead on 42 minutes breaking clear following a long pass from Lucas Neill - who was playing at left back to accommodate Behrami on the right. Bellamy's clever lob left Lewis in the home goal no chance. The second half remained scoreless as the usual pre-season round of substitutions altered the flow of the game, though Behrami, Cole and Sears all went close in front of a crowd in excess of 5,000.

Next up is a trip to Southampton where the crowd will be bolstered by the better part of 3,000 Hammers for Friday night's friendly at St Mary's. See you there!

West Ham United: Green (Stech 70), Neill (capt), Ferdinand (Collison 86), Upson, Behrami (Widdowson 66), Parker, Faubert, Bellamy (Sears 70), Reid (Stanislas 82), Cole, Noble.
Subs not used: Davenport, Stokes, Mullins.

Peterborough United: Lewis, Martin, Blackett (Westwood 60), Morgan (Charnock 70), Lee (Hyde 66), McLean (Coutts 60), Boyd (Potter 70), Keates (Rendell 60), Mackail-Smith, Whelpdale (Batt 60), Williams.

Curbishley praises Bellamy graft - BBC

Alan Curbishley says Craig Bellamy was "like a new signing" after the West Ham striker's double beat Peterborough United in Tuesday night's friendly.
The Wales captain played nine games for West Ham last term in an injury-ravaged first season at Upton Park blighted by abdominal and groin problems.
Bellamy scored twice in a 2-0 win at Peterborough and boss Curbishley said: "It's terrific to have him back. "He has worked extremely hard to return to full fitness and is a great asset." Bellamy endured a nightmare first season in East London following his £7.5m move from Liverpool last summer. But the fiery forward, who underwent a second abdominal operation in February, returned for Wales during their end-of-season friendly double header. The 51-times capped Wales star enjoyed cameo performances for his country against both Iceland and The Netherlands. Bellamy even vowed to sacrifice his summer holidays to embark on a gruelling schedule to regain his fitness for the 2008/09 season and show West Ham "the real Craig Bellamy." Curbishley appreciates his hard work and following Bellamy's brace against League One new boys Peterborough, the West Ham manager admitted: "Craig has been working hard through the summer to get his fitness back. "He is a little bit further down the line towards full fitness than some of the other lads and it's great for us to have him back - he's like a new signing. "Dean Ashton played and scored in our game against The Major League all-stars the other day and he was missing against Peterborough. "Now Craig Bellamy has come back and scored twice - it's terrific for us."
Curbishley hopes his Bellamy and England striker Ashton double-act can fire West Ham into Europe this season. Both of Bellamy's first-half goals at London Road on Tuesday night were superbly-taken. He broke the off-side trap to score his first in the third minute as Bellamy sprinted onto Scott Parker's long ball before rounding goalkeeper Joe Lewis to slide home. Then just before the break, Bellamy raced onto Lucas Neill's long punt up field to chip Lewis and seal a comfortable West Ham win. West Ham have three remaining friendlies - the next is at Southampton on Friday, 1 August - before their Premier League campaign starts against Wigan Athletic at home on 16 August.

Posh beaten by Bellamy brace - SSN
Welshman hits a double as Behrami makes his debut
Last updated: 29th July 2008

Craig Bellamy netted a brace as West Ham United defeated Peterborough United in their pre-season friendly at London Road. The Wales international struck early on in the fixture before putting the result out of The Posh's reach with his second just before the break. Summer signing Valon Behrami from Lazio made his Hammers bow and looked lively before he was replaced on 66 minutes. Bellamy's opener came in the third minute when he latched on to Scott Parker's pass before rounding shot-stopper Joe Lewis to tap home. On 42 minutes, Bellamy, who endured an injury-plagued campaign last term, doubled West Ham's lead via an expertly taken lob over Lewis. Peterborough came closest late in the second half when George Boyd's effort beat goalkeeper Robert Green but came back off the post.

Cavani happy at Palermo - SSN
Striker not looking for move to Premier League
Last updated: 29th July 2008

Edison Cavani's agent says the reported Premier League target is happy to stay at Palermo. West Ham United are among the clubs to have been linked with a bid for the Uruguayan striker over the summer. Cavani has spent the past 18 months with Palermo and is on a long-term contract with the Serie A club. The 21-year-old's representative Pierpaolo Triulzi admits the forward is content to continue with Palermo, rather than look for another club. "Cavani is a Palermo player," said Triulzi. "There are no negotiations in place. "He has four years left on his contract and he is happy to stay at Palermo."

Exclusive: Benayoun in line for shock return to West Ham after just one season at Liverpool - Daily Mail
By Dan Francis
Last updated at 7:16 PM on 29th July 2008

Yossi Benayoun could make a shock return to West Ham - just a year after leaving Upton Park to join Liverpool. The Hammers have enquired about the 28-year-old midfielder's availability - and price - as boss Alan Curbishley looks to strengthen his squad. Liverpool are desperate for cash to fund their protracted attempts to capture Gareth Barry from Aston Villa, having already splashed out £19million on Robbie Keane this week, while Curbishley is keen to appease disgruntled Hammers fans by making Benayoun a returning hero. The Israel playmaker became a crowd favourite at Upton Park after joining from Spanish side Racing Santander for £2.5million in July 2005, following West Ham's promotion to the Premier League. His first season in east London ended with an impressive display against Liverpool in the the FA Cup Final, and just 12 months later Rafa Benitez swooped with a £4.5million bid to lure him to Anfield. Benayoun has scored four goals in 30 appearances for the Reds and would become Curbishley's second summer signing, following the arrival of Swiss international defender Valon Behrami, who has made a £5m move from Lazio.

Behrami handed Posh debut, while Irons dismiss Ashton injury rumours - Echo News
8:32pm Tuesday 29th July 2008
By Rob Pritchard »

SWITZERLAND international Valon Behrami was handed his West Ham United debut in tonight's pre-season friendly at League One newboys Peterborough United. The £5million player, who arrived from SS Lazio last week, was handed the right-back berth at London Road. Also in Alan Curbishley's starting line-up was Wales captain Craig Bellamy, who returned to action after missing the Irons' 3-2 defeat to the MLS All-Stars in Toronto last Thursday, and fit-again England defender Matthew Upson. Upson, 29, made a successful comeback from the calf injury that had kept him out of action since April in Saturday's 3-0 win at Thurrock. Meanwhile, the Irons have moved to dismiss internet speculation that Dean Ashton has suffered a serious knee injury in training. Ashton missed the whole of the 2006/07 season after breaking his ankle while away with the senior England squad in August 2006. However, a statement on the club's official website claimed the striker was "feeling unwell" and should return to the first team squad for Friday's warm-up fixture at Championship side Southampton.

Hammers Return For Benayoun? - Goal.com

Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun is being linked with a return to former club West Ham, according to a report in the Echo. The Israeli joined Liverpool from West Ham last year in a deal thought to be worth £5 million but has struggled to become a regular at Anfield. Benayoun managed only 15 Premier League starts and 4 goals in his first season at Anfield which has led to speculation he may be surplus to requirements at the club. The former West Ham man was a popular figure at Upton Park and a return would certainly be warmly welcomed by the fans who have fond memories of his time in East London. Benayoun managed 8 goals in 63 appearances for West Ham and helped carry them to an FA Cup final with Liverpool which they eventually lost on penalties. However, the Israeli's flair and creativity were as important as his goals and ensured he is still highly thought of by the Hammers. The Echo reports that West Ham have contacted Liverpool to discuss the possibility of a move for Benayoun as they hope to be reunited with their former player.
Rafael Benitez has been widely quoted this week as saying he needs to sell players in order to finance more moves and it is possible Benayoun could potentially be sold as Liverpool look to strength their squad further. Peter Crouch, John Arne Riise and Harry Kewell have already left Anfield this summer whilst Cavalieri, Degen, Dossena and Robbie Keane have all arrived. Liverpool are also still thought to be chasing Gareth Barry, although any further signings may be impossible until further funds are raised.

HAMMERS TALK: Irons plan shock swoop for former hero - Guardian Series
12:39am Wednesday 30th July 2008

WEST Ham have enquired about bringing playmaker Yossi Benayoun back to Upton Park. The 28-year-old spent two successful seasons with the Hammers before joining Liverpool in a £5million deal a year ago. However, with Reds manager Rafa Benitez desperate to raise funds to sign Aston Villa and England midfielder Gareth Barry, the former Racing Santander player may be considered surplus to requirements on Merseyside. And the east Londoners have reportedly contacted the five-times European Cup winners to ask if Benayoun is available for transfer and, if so, at what price. Benayoun - who scored eight goals in 72 league and cup appearances for the Irons between 2005 and 2007 - has enjoyed a mixed first year at Anfield. The Israeli international scored two hat-tricks - against Besiktas in the Champions League and Havant and Waterlooville in the FA Cup - but struggled to hold down a regular starting place in the Premier League. In total, Benayoun has made 30 league - 15 as a substitute - and 17 cup appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals. Should he return to the Boleyn Ground, Benayoun would join a host of right-sided midfielders, including Freddie Ljungberg, Julien Faubert and Kieron Dyer.

Peterborough United 0 West Ham United 2 - West Ham Online
Match Reporter - Wed Jul 30 2008

West Ham returned to home shores to continue their build up to the new season against Darren Ferguson's Peterborough United.

In front of over 5300 fans, with what must have been half in support of the visitors, I'm sure the players from each side were glad the temperatures and humidity had dropped from the previous few evenings and conditions were perfect for football.

West Ham gave a debut to £5m signing Valon Behrami at right back, with Captain Lucas Neill looking like a man who had just collected his cards switching to left back in the continued absence of George McCartney. Matthew Upson returned to the first team to partner Anton Ferdinand in the centre of defence.

In midfield Kyel Reid started on the left, Mark Noble partnered Scott Parker in the centre and Julian Faubert started on the right wing.

In attack Craig Bellamy come back in to the starting 11 in place of Dean Ashton who was subject to much rumour and gossip over his absence to partner Carlton Cole.

And West Ham got off to the very best of starts, just minutes into the delayed kick off, Scott Parker played a ball into the path of Craig Bellamy who controlled the ball, beat his defender, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the empty net to put the visitor's one up.

West Ham were well on top in the opening exchanges, new boy Behrami showing just why West Ham paid Lazio for his services. But without being able to find the final ball,

Posh who are amongst the favourites in League One gained a foot hold in the game and started to look the more dangerous, Green pulled off an outstanding save from the Boro number 9 and then was called upon repeatedly to keep his side in the lead.

The just before half time and somewhat against the of play, Lucas Neill launched a hopeful ball out of defensive, Bellamy used his outstanding pace to race onto the ball and lob the keeper to make it two. Carlton Cole nearly added a third, smashing a chance wide on the half time whistle.

West Ham started the second half in confident style, Noble went close a couple of times and Behrami dragged a chance wide in what was an outstanding first game.

Then as these games tend to go, plenty of changes were made and the game lost some of its fizz.

Cole went close late on with a half volley over the bar; Sears fired wide and then saw a shot saved by the Posh keeper.

Robert Green 8 – Some questioned the fans reaction to him after his outburst in the papers but the fans were 100% behind the England number 6, chanting repeatedly for him in the first half. He's really such an important part of the first team and showed he's in good form with a string of quality saves in the first half.

Lucas Neill 5 – Poor old Lucas, shifted to left back whatever way it's dressed up, it's just not is position.

Matthew Upson 6 – Good in the air as you would expect but a little ring rusty on the floor, this run out will have done him the world of good.

Anton Ferdinand 6 – No idea why people want rid of him, put in another half decent pre-season performance.

Valon Behrami 8 – Impressed is the word I'm looking for. I questioned why people put him straight in their starting 11's but now I see why. He defended well, he's strong in the challenge, very, very quick, plays the ball well and got forward.

Kyel Reid 5 – Quite first half, is it me or do the other just not pass to him much? Got more involved in the secord half but not the answer to the left side.

Scott Parker 6 – Does the man know it was a friendly? Got stuck in, played a delightful ball for the opening goal and worked hard.

Mark Noble 6 – Plenty of effort if a little lacking on end product, Nobes really needs to start grabbing games by the scruff of the neck and dominating.

Julian Faubert 6 – Not really sure what to make of him, looks very hit and miss. Put a few decent crosses in but needs to offer much, much more.

Carlton Cole 6 – He works his socks off but doesn't score enough and is slow when the chances fall to him.

Craig Bellamy 8 MOTM – Two well taken goals and like Parker, doesn't seem to know or care it's a friendly and puts it all in. He's a menace, thankfully our menace.

Joe Widdowson 6 For Behrami – Slotted in at left back allowing Neill to convert back to his normal position. A tidy if nothing else cameo.

Marek Stech 6 For Green – Not a great deal to do as Posh didn't threaten as they did in the first half.

Freddie Sears 6 For Bellamy – Not sure why people don't think he's ready, came on, tried to make things happen and unlucky not to score. He's a constant threat.
Junior Stanislas 5 For Reid – Not time to make an impact.

Jake Collison 5 for Ferdinand – Neill moved again with just a few minutes left into the centre and Collison slotted in at right back.

Newcastle and Sunderland Battle for £7m Ferdinand - Cmon Yu Irons

Sunderland boss Roy Keane is reportedly interested in Anton Ferdinand. The West Ham United defender has been linked with a move away from the club for over two months; the Black Cats are set to make a last ditch effort to bring the England Under-21 defender to Wearside. Sunderland will be expected to pay in the region of around £7 million for Ferdinand, who had been hotly tipped to join Tottenham earlier in the summer. It does now appear that Sunderland have jumped to the head of the queue, after Spurs apparently opted to sign midfielders as opposed to defensive signings. Newcastle's Keegan will also be monitoring Ferdinand's position very closely, and are expected to make an offer for the player very soon which may outbid the Black Cats.

Sunderland's boss Roy Keane is likely to make an effort to bring Ferdinand to the Stadium Of Light, who are seen to be in pole position to sign the young defender. The asking fee is expected to be in the region of ₤7 million.

Alan Curbishley fears burn out at West Ham - The Mirror
30/07/2008

Peterborough 0-2 West Ham

Alan Curbishley says his West Ham players are already facing the prospect of burn-out. The east London club, who returned from their two match tour of the USA and Canada on Friday, eased to victory at London Road. But Curbishley, who saw Craig Bellamy score twice in an entertaining first-half, admits he is worried by his stars' heavy schedule. "We were all feeling a bit rough from the America trip but hopefully we got that out of our system with this win," said the West Ham boss. "I wanted to rotate my side a bit more but I can't because I've got quite a few out already with little niggles and blisters like Luis Boa Morte and Matthew Etherington. "That means that some of the players are getting flogged and playing more than usual, which should not be the way during pre-season."

Manchester City set to outbid Hammers for Liverpool's Israel midfielder Benayoun - Daily Mail
By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 8:15 AM on 30th July 2008

Manchester City have made a £6m offer for Yossi Benayoun, all but ending West Ham's hopes of re-signing the Israel midfielder. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez must sell before making another bid for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry, and the opportunity of a £1m profit on Benayoun could be too good to reject. Hammers boss Alan Curbishley asked about Benayoun but is unlikely to match City's bid. City are considering a move for Fulham's 36-year-old goalkeeper Antti Niemi to complement Joe Hart and Kasper Schmeichel, while defender Tal Ben Haim's £5m move from Chelsea, first revealed by Sportsmail earlier this month, will go through on Wednesday.

Friendly: Posh 0, West Ham 2 - PeterboroughToday.com

Aaron Mclean was denied a spectacular goal by West Ham keeper Robert Green and George Boyd hit the post as Posh went down 2-0 in tonight's friendly against the Premier League side. The Hammers took the lead inside three minutes through Welsh striker Craig Bellamy who raced on to a Scott Parker pass. Posh's best effort came from an acrobatic Mclean shot which forced a superb one-handed save from Green midway though the half, before Bellamy grabbed his second just before the interval. Sponsors' man of the match Boyd almost pulled one back for Posh in the second half lashing a shot against the post.

Hammers boss reveals concern over gruelling pre-season schedule - Guardian Series
9:13am Wednesday 30th July 2008

WEST HAM boss Alan Curbishley fears his players could burn-out during a gruelling pre-season schedule. The Irons beat Peterborough United in a friendly at London Road last night, just three days after returning from a nine-day tour of North America, which included games against Colombus Crew and the MLS All-Stars. But - while conceding that, as a Premier League club, West Ham are expected to take part in commercial ventures across the globe during the close season - Curbishley admits he would prefer to rotate his squad more, particularly with another friendly away at Southampton on Friday in mind.
"We're pleased with what has happened so far, but the America trip was tough and we're all feeling a bit rough because of it," he said. "We really appreciated being invited out there, especially the MLS game, and accepted the invitation immediately. "But there's still a lot of names missing from the squad and I just can't rotate it at the moment. "Some players are being flogged a bit and that's not what you want in pre-season." A first-half brace from Craig Bellamy was enough to secure a hard-fought win over Posh. But it was by far from an easy ride for the east Londoners as they were given a sterm examination by the League One outfit - much to the pleasure of Curbishley. "I think the first half was as quick a game as I've seen for a long while and it is a great credit to Peterborough," he said. "We got a great start, obviously, scoring early but for 45 minutes it was really competitive with some great tackles going in. "It had everything there for both teams - Robert Green has had to make some saves and we looked dangerous when we attacked. I was pleased with the game." West Ham travel to St Mary's Stadium to play Championship outfit Southampton on Friday.

Curbishley delighted with new Hammers signing - Guardian Series
11:20am Wednesday 30th July 2008

ALAN Curbishley was delighted with the performance of Valon Behrami on his West Ham debut. The 23-year-old Swiss international joined the east Londoners in a £5million deal from Italian giants Lazio last week. And he managed a successful 66-minute run-out during his first taste of the action, before being replaced by youngster Joe Widdowson in last night's friendly win over Peterborough. "Valon obviously hasn't been doing too much, that's his first game in a while," said Irons boss Curbishley. "So we told him to play well within himself. But he's a great athlete, got involved and kept streaking up and down the line." Curbishley also backed his latest signing to be a hit at Upton Park, adding: "We're pleased to have got him. "He's a versatile player - he can play right back, wide on the right or in the centre midfield. He has also played wide left. "He is one of those sort of boys - great athlete and great attitude. He could be a great asset to our squad."
Behrami's energetic display against Posh also got the thumbs-up from team-mate Anton Ferdinand. "He looks very good, very sharp," said Ferdinand.
"He is willing to get forward and create things and I'm looking forward to playing with him. "It was only his first day yesterday and to come in and play like he has with a new set of lads shows what a good player and good professional he is."

West Ham's Hines fancies loan move
tribalfootball.com - July 29, 2008

West Ham striker Zavon Hines admits he may seek a loan move away to continue his progress this season. The 19 year-old told whufc.com: "Part of my aim is to make sure I am a regular in the reserves and do well there, but I also want to be more regular as part of the first-team squad. It might be that I would need to go on loan again, if only to get more experience and then be able to come back and get into the first-team squad."
Last season, Hines went on loan to struggling Championship side Coventry and came on as substitute in seven games - one of which saw him score a very important goal against Sheffield Wednesday. "I scored the goal that earned them a point to stay up." He said. "I got a lot out of being at Coventry at loan. When you are young, you have to work hard so the manager will give you that chance and I knew that if I could do my best that it would help when I came back to West Ham."

Sears happy with goal on West Ham comeback
tribalfooball.com - July 29, 2008

Freddie Sears was happy with his goal for West Ham in their friendly victory over Thurrock. It was the England U19 international's first appearance this preseason and he told whufc.com: "It was good to get on the scoresheet in my first game back for West Ham. "The match was a good run-out for me, I was able to play out a full 90 minutes. I am feeling good - I played three games in a week for England so another match now has helped me out and with just a few weeks to go before the start of the season, I just want to be involved as much as I can. We have some more pre-season friendlies coming up - so if I can play a part in those games, that means I can work to be as sharp as I can for the start."

Special night for Hammers old boy Williams - PeterboroughToday.co.uk
Posh v West Ham, Tuesday, July 29, kick-off 7.45pm

FORMER Hammer Tom Williams is relishing the chance tonight to take on the club where 'his football story began'. Williams spent 18 months at West Ham as a teenager alongside former London Road favourite Jimmy Bullard in the late nineties before being handed the chance of first team football at Posh by then manager Barry Fry. Since then the Surrey-born 28-year-old has bounced up and down the league's with spells at Birmingham and QPR followed by a brief return to Posh five years ago before heading off again to Barnsley, Gillingham and Swansea City. Now having returned to the club which gave him his big break in the game, Williams admits to being desperate for a chance against the East London club where it all began. "I will not deny that playing against West Ham does have a special feeling for me," he said. "To now be playing for the club that launched my career as a first teamer against the club which put me in the shop window as a kid is a special thing for me in some ways. "I have many fond memories of my time at West Ham alongside Jimmy Bullard and a very young Anton Ferdinand, who at that time was still a youngster in the club's academy. "In fact I think Anton is the only guy still there from my time at the club and he has really come on leaps and bounds in recent years so I will look forward to seeing him again."
But tonight's friendly won't just be a trip down memory lane for Williams, who is desperate to establish himself as a first team regular. He added: "Obviously with Jamie Day out at the moment I am keen to take as many chances as I can get to impress the gaffer and the game against West Ham will hopefully be one of those opportunities. "I am no fool and realise the quality at this club means I will have a fight on my hands to stay in the side but that is not a problem and I look forward to the challenge. "Tonight is another opportunity for me to show what I can do. It should be a cracking attacking game between two teams who like to play passing football which suits me as I do like to get forward when I can. "It is another important step for us in our pre-season build-up and will provide us with a good guide as to where we are in our preparations for next season."

Hammers look in good shape ahead of the new campaign - ThisIsTotalEssex.co.uk
09:27 - 29-July-2008

WEST Ham United manager Alan Curbishley said his side is in better shape ahead of the new season than they were at the same time last term and the club has taken action to ensure it stays that way. Curbishley took his team to the salubrious surroundings of Peterborough United's London Road ground last night (Tuesday) as they continued their pre-season preparations. Last week West Ham were defeated 3-2 by a Major League Soccer All-Star 11 – which included LA Galaxy's David Beckham. However, Curbishley is content with where his team is after just two full weeks back at the club. He said: "We are two weeks into a six-week programme of pre-season and we needed the fitness work. We certainly got that. It was good and I think everybody can be pleased with their efforts.

"We are looking that much sharper than we did this time last year when we were doing pre-season." Another plus for the West Ham boss was the distinct lack of pre-season injuries – ahead of last night's clash with Darren Ferguson's side. A number of Hammers players are rejoining training this week – including Kieron Dyer and Matthew Upson – who even played 75 minutes of a friendly at Thurrock at the weekend. Another player who had Curbishley purring with his performances state-side was Craig Bellamy, as the Welsh international is also nearing full fitness. In a bid to maintain the fitness of the club's star players money has been invested in new medical staff and facilities.
The club has appointed experts including new chief medical officer Nikos Tzouroudis, who has worked for several leading European clubs including Panathinakos in his native Greece, Fiorentina, Verona and Steaua Bucharest. He will work alongside leading Serie-A osteopath in Marco Cesarini, and rehabilitation physiotherapist Giorgio Gasparini, who is used to working one-on-one with World Cup winners Fabio Cannavaro and Filippo Inzaghi. The club has also spent money on training facilities and is looking to invest in a completely new training ground. West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "The Board and manager have taken these decisive steps to ensure the club has the very best support in place for the entire coaching and playing staff.
"We sought the best independent advice and over recent months have been looking at home and across the continent for the leading experts in the field."

HAMMERS TALK: Black Cats line up £3m Irons winger - Guardian Series
9:08am Tuesday 29th July 2008

WEST HAM winger Luis Boa Morte has emerged as a top target for Sunderland boss Roy Keane, according to reports. And the big-spending Black Cats boss is apparently willing to offer £3million to land the former Arsenal, Southampton and Fulham man. Boa Morte has struggled to get things right at Upton Park following his £5million from Craven Cottage in January last year. The Portugal star made 32 appearances in all competitions last season but failed to register a goal. And a move could be on the cards with the player voicing his concerns at being subjected to the Upton Park boo-boys towards the end of last term.
