Team news

Scott Parker and Dean Ashton both came through a reserve match unscathed and
are in contention for a starting berth - having come on as substitutes
against Tottenham. Lee Bowyer could return after a ban and hernia operation
while Freddie Ljungberg has trained all week after a bad migraine last
weekend. Fit-again James Collins, Mark Noble and Hayden Mullins will all
expect to be involved in the 16.

Chelsea have Didier Drogba back after knee trouble and scoring goals after
two in a midweek Champions League fixture but look set to be without Petr
Cech, Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho and the suspended Michael Essien.
Michael Ballack has been in reserve action after an ankle injury but is not
thought to be in contention. John Terry and Ashley Cole are also fit after
recent knocks.

Background

Alan Curbishley has positive memories of his last two trips to Stamford
Bridge. In his final season at Charlton Athletic in the 2005/06 campaign,
his former club drew 1-1 in the league having already earned the same result
in the League Cup third round before knocking out the then champions 5-4 on
penalties.

West Ham United have not lost this season in any match where the club have
taken the lead and are looking to make it seven games unbeaten. Chelsea are
undefeated in 13 matches and are also looking to extend their unbeaten run
at home to 70 games, having not lost since the visit of Arsenal on 21
February 2004. West Ham United last won at Stamford Bridge on 28 September
2002, a victory inspired by Paolo Di Canio.

Victory would ensure tenth-placed West Ham United - who have 19 points from
13 games and a better goal difference than every club below - stay in the
top half of the table. Only Newcastle United, a point behind in eleventh,
could overtake Curbishley's men this weekend. Chelsea are fourth with 28
points from 14 games and could, temporarily at least, move into second spot
with victory.

George McCartney is bidding to make his 17th appearance for the club this
season in all competitions - and is the only player who has featured in
every game to date, starting in each one. In terms of the Barclays Premier
League, only Robert Green and Matthew Upson have played every minute of the
13 matches. Bowyer is the club's top league scorer with four goals, while
Matthew Etherington has three in the top-flight this campaign. Carlton Cole
has six assists to his name.

Chelsea have kept eight clean sheets in league matches this season and have
only conceded once in 630 minutes. Both clubs, who will play the return
fixture at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday 1 March, share the record for the
longest current run in the top flight (seven games) without conceding more
than once in a fixture. Drogba is Chelsea's leading scorer in the top-flight
with five goals.

Both teams will have two players in action against former clubs. Parker made
28 appearances for Chelsea, with one goal, between January 2004 and June
2005 while Carlton Cole came through the academy at Stamford Bridge before
heading east in July 2006 after 32 appearances and eight goals for the
Blues. Chelsea boast Lampard and Joe Cole, both Academy products, who headed
west in June 2001 and August 2003 respectively. Lampard made 187
appearances, scoring 37 goals, while Joe Cole played 149 times, with 13
goals.

After Saturday's meeting, West Ham United go to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday 9
December while Chelsea will receive Sunderland the day before.

Head to head (last six Barclays Premier League meetings)

18 April 2007 - West Ham United 1-4 Chelsea
18 November 2006 - Chelsea 1-0 West Ham United
9 April 2006 - Chelsea 4-1 West Ham United
2 January 2006 - West Ham United 1-3 Chelsea
3 May 2003 - West Ham United 1-0 Chelsea
28 September 2002 - Chelsea 2-3 West Ham United

The clubs also met on 27 October 2004 when Chelsea won 1-0 in a League Cup

Cole looking for a 'big impact' - WHUFC
A return to his former club will motivate Carlton Cole on Saturday afternoon
30.11.2007

Carlton Cole is "really up for it" as he goes back to Chelsea this weekend
for the first time as an opposition player.

The 24-year-old striker is thriving after a run of games in the West Ham
United first team. As a result, he cannot wait to feature in attack against
the club he left to move east in summer 2006.

"There will always be that extra hunger for a player when they come up
against their former club, no player wants to play their old team and do
badly," he said. "This is actually the first time I am playing Chelsea as
the visiting team so it will be weird but I am really up for it.

"I will hopefully have a big impact on the game and to get on the
score-sheet as well would be the icing on the cake." Cole came through the
Academy ranks at Chelsea and was tipped to be an England star of the future,
with Claudio Ranieri particularly affording him high praise. However, he
found opportunities hard to come by and went on loan to Wolverhampton
Wanderers, Charlton Athletic - under Alan Curbishley - and Aston Villa.
Settled at the Boleyn Ground now, he is seeing the benefits of an extended
run.

"I expect a very tough game, it will be a lot to do with our performance
though rather than theirs," he said. "We will need to go and set up our
stall and show we mean business. I think we will be able to do quite well."
Cole was on target last weekend in the 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur,
finishing off a fine move with a tidy finish past Paul Robinson. He is not
just about scoring goals though, as he has managed to make six goals for
others this campaign.

"We are a team than can go to places and upset teams which we have shown
away from home so far this season. We will do the same at Stamford Bridge
and try to upset their game plan and get the result we need." Cole may well
find himself starting alongside Dean Ashton, a player he enjoyed a good
partnership with at England Under-21 level. Whether going it alone or with
Ashton in tow, Cole is determined to make his mark back at the Bridge.

Captain's Blog - Derby day again - WHUFC
The skipper updates on the latest in the camp before another London derby
30.11.2007

In his latest exclusive column for whufc.com, Lucas Neill has plenty of
praise for Robert Green, is delighted to see Scott Parker and Dean Ashton
back and also has high hopes for Carlton Cole. He begins though with the
visit of Jermain Defoe and Tottenham Hotspur, and finishes up looking
forward to the trip to Chelsea.

As we all expected it was a fantastic atmosphere for the local derby, a game
which on chances I felt we could have won but at the death should have lost.
Yet again Greenie produced a last-minute penalty save that got us a point
that was well deserved after another good team performance.

As far as derbies go, I didn't think it was a physical encounter so to find
out after the game that we had committed 37 fouls to their eight has left
all the players a little bit shocked and disappointed. When the ref blew for
the penalty at the end of the match, I seriously thought he had blown for a
dive which would have meant Defoe would have been sent off for a second
yellow but I guess the West Ham fans had the last laugh when one of their
old boys was the victim of Greenie's heroics.

It was good to see Scotty and Deano getting some much needed game time for
both the Spurs match and a run-out for the reserves on Monday. Competition
for places is getting stronger and, with a few more experienced players
regaining fitness, December could see the gaffer picking from his strongest
possible squad so far.

The boys are all continuing to work hard to rectify mistakes and situations
that are happening in games. In a number of games now we have dominated
certain periods and failed to reward our good play. I think we have left
points out on the pitch because of our failure to kill teams off and it is
something we are concentrating hard on to rectify.

This week probably sees our toughest game yet. Before the game you would
take a point but we will be going there in decent form and hoping to cause
the upset of the weekend. Chelsea have been travelling midweek in difficult
conditions and as a result if we start fast we could catch them cold.

I am expecting another raucous atmosphere as it is another London derby.
Thank you in advance to all those that brave the cold weather to support the
team live when you could be at home in the warmth watching it on the box.

Coley comes up against his former club on Saturday and it happens to be the
first time he has played them at Stamford Bridge since he left. He has
worked ever so hard for the team of late and is getting goals to reward his
performances - so let's hope it is a day for him and us to remember.

Enjoy the game!
Lucas Neill

Ray ready for Chelsea test - WHUFC
Famous fan Ray Winstone spoke to WHUTV about Saturday's derby game
30.11.2007

Like West Ham United fans the world over, Ray Winstone is particularly
looking forward to the derby match away to Chelsea on Saturday.

A lifelong supporter, Ray took time out from his busy schedule to share his
thoughts on the trip to Stamford Bridge with WHUTV. "That's anybody's game,"
he said. "It don't matter whether you are top of the league or bottom. We
ain't bottom we are middle at the minute and we have been playing with 12 of
our first team regulars out. Who knows what can happen?"

He said Alan Curbishley's side would certainly be up for the contest, not
least Mark Noble and Dean Ashton - "who know what a derby is" - before
adding "I don't think we should fear anyone at the minute". However, the
acclaimed actor acknowledged that, like West Ham United, Chelsea have
several players who know what is at stake.

"It is a derby and they have got a lot of London boys who actually come from
here," he said. "The Lampards, John Terry - who is out of this manor - and
Joey Cole - they know what a derby game is all about. It will mean a lot to
them."

Chelsea manager Avram Grant: "We want to succeed in the Champions League, FA

everything. "You can't belong to big clubs and not want to succeed in every
competition. "We played very well on Wednesday, as we have for the past two
or three months, but there are always more things we can improve on the
tactical side and the style of the team. I am sure we will get there."

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley on Chelsea's revival: It's no big secret.
They've got their bigger players back, they're picking up results, which is
a major factor. Chelsea with the squad they've got, were always going to be
a force in the Premier League. "Managers move on and great credit to Avram
Grant, it seems to have been a smooth transition. He's not been too
aggressive, he's been reserved."

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Chelsea are the Premier League's "form" team, as they attempt to take their
club record unbeaten home run to an incredible 70 games.

It's back-to-back London derbies for West Ham, who drew 1-1 home to
Tottenham last time out. The Hammers have won one of their last 10 Premier
League capital clashes; 0-1 away to Arsenal on 7 April.

Tottenham on 5 November 2006, their only defeat in 14 such fixtures.

Drogba too hot for Irons - SSN
Last updated: 30th November 2007

LAST SEASON'S HEAD-TO-HEAD
West Ham 1-4 Chelsea
Chelsea 1-0 West Ham

Chelsea v West Ham
12.30pm, Saturday, Sky Sports 1

Chelsea have been pretty good this season, but I still don't think they are
going to have enough to beat Manchester United and Arsenal in the title
race.
I didn't really expect them to collapse after Jose Mourinho left because
they've got too many good players for that. And under Avram Grant they've
been as solid as ever and they've given themselves a chance of winning the
Premier League after looking a little bit dodgy at the start of the season.
I'm sure that's what they are aiming for. They'll comfortably be in the top
four, but I think Arsenal and Man United are playing some fabulous stuff at
the moment and Chelsea no longer have that extra spark that they had under
Mourinho. They struggle in the centre-back position when John Terry and
Ricardo Carvalho are injured and while they are still a very good, solid
football team I haven't seen any of the "sexy football" that Avram Grant
promised. There hasn't been much of a difference in their style of play.
Grant had to come in and promise attacking football because that's what
Roman Abramovich wanted. But there has been no evidence of change and the
real test will come in January when we see what type of players he goes out
and buys. I think Abramovich would probably rather win the Champions League
than the title this season. He's won the Premier League a couple of times
and the Champions League has eluded them, so if you were to ask him if he
could win one title this season that's the one he'd go for.

Suspension

Michael Essien's suspension is a big miss for them this weekend. He is one
of the best midfielders in the Premier League, very solid, scores the
occasional goal and holds the midfield together very well. When they move
him to full-back, the midfield suffers and when he is out of the team it is
a real blow. But I think they might be strong enough without him against
West Ham, especially because Didier Drogba looks like he's getting back to
his best. He took Mourinho's departure very hard, but these guys are
professionals and have to go out and do their job. If he wants to move on to
pastures new, the only way he can do it is to perform well for Chelsea and
get himself a good move. It's good to see him firing again because last
season he was outstanding. It's the second London derby in a row for West
Ham after a very interesting match against Spurs last weekend. Robert Green
could have been sent off and later ended up saving a last-minute penalty.
It's amazing how many times in football that a villain who should have been
sent off goes on to have a massive impact on a game.

Strong

But saying that, I think Green is coming into some decent form. He was out
for a long time with an injury last season, but now he is looking pretty
strong.
I'm sure he's pushing for a place in the England squad given the problems
we've got in that department. I'm not quite sure why he wasn't involved in
the recent internationals. He looked very promising a couple of years ago
and was getting in the squad before he got injured on England duty. It seems
to have taken him a while to recover from that and he's made a habit of
saving penalties this season. I'm sure he'll be back in the squad pretty
soon. Another man who has stepped up this season is Carlton Cole and I'm
pleased for him. He had a very big reputation as a young boy and never
really seemed to get anywhere near the standard we thought he would. He's
got a lot of great attributes as a centre-forward, but he has never really
scored enough goals or got much of a run in a team until now. But he's had a
chance at West Ham this season and he needed that for his confidence and for
his career. He went out on loan to Villa and Charlton and didn't really do
much, but hopefully his career has had a bit of a kick-start now. Dean
Ashton's return is also a big boost for them. He's a good footballer and
while he's not blessed with blistering pace, he's got a very good touch,
knows where the goal is and is a good finisher. West Ham have missed him.
He's one of many injuries West Ham have had, so they've done okay to get to
mid-table. Nineteen points isn't a bad start given the problems they've had
early in the season.

Le Tiss predicts

HOME WIN - London teams sometimes suffer with the amount of derbies they
have to play because you can't win them all, but I think Chelsea will win
this one. However, it won't be comfortable for them and West Ham will give
them a bit of a game. I think the odd goal will settle it and I think it
will be 2-1.

Matt's Main Man

DIDIER DROGBA - He's back in form so he's got to be the key man. He scored a
couple of goals in midweek and looks like he's out of his sulking mode and
back into his I-want-to-play mode.

Cole eyes memorable return - SSN
Striker returns to Stamford Bridge after move last summer
By James Dall Last updated: 30th November 2007

West Ham United striker Carlton Cole is hoping to make a 'big impact' when
he faces former club Chelsea on Saturday. The 24-year-old had loan spells at
Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa before eventually leaving Stamford Bridge
for Upton Park in a permanent deal last summer. After his move Cole found
first-team appearances hard to come by, but a recent spate of injuries have
paved the way for a consistent run spearheading The Hammers attack. And the
former England Under 21 international has spoken of his 'extra hunger' to
perform against his old club, with his sights set on netting a memorable
goal. "There will always be that extra hunger for a player when they come up
against their former club - no player wants to play their old team and do
badly," he told West Ham's official website. "This is actually the first
time I am playing Chelsea as the visiting team, so it will be weird - but I
am really up for it. "I will hopefully have a big impact on the game and to
get on the scoresheet as well would be the icing on the cake." Chelsea are
currently on a run of 13 games unbeaten, and Cole is expecting a tough
afternoon. "I expect a very tough game, it will be a lot to do with our
performance though rather than theirs." he added. "We will need to go and
set up our stall and show we mean business. I think we will be able to do
quite well. "We are a team than can go to places and upset teams which we
have shown away from home so far this season. "We will do the same at
Stamford Bridge and try to upset their game plan and get the result we
need."

Grant tells Curbs to drop mind games - Setanta
by Ben Blackmore, 30 November 2007

Avram Grant has hit back at Alan Curbishley's claims that Chelsea try to
bully referees, insisting the West Ham boss does not believe the words he
speaks.
Curbishley claimed Chelsea were one of four big clubs who think they have a
right to influence the referee's mind by means of intimidation. The West
Ham boss was speaking in relation to the recent incident at Derby that saw
seven Chelsea players surround the referee after Michael Essien was red
carded.
Grant believes Curbishley's comments are merely a poor attempt at mind
games, and he insists there is no doubt that The Blues find themselves on
the wrong end of refereeing decisions. "I don't think that he believes that.
Psychology war, it's ok - you can say anything. But you can see the facts,"
he said. "I don't want to speak about the other teams but there have been
three red cards against us in the last three months and none of them was a
red card. "If this equals privilege I don't want to think about other
situations."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
It's The Same Old Chelsea, Insists West Ham Boss Curbishley -
caughtoffside.com
November 30, 2007

What do you get if you sack a controversial Portuguese manager and replace
him with an introverted Israeli coach at Chelsea? According to Alan
Curbishley in The Guardian, exactly the same team who continue to pick up
wins on account of the foundations laid by their predecessor.

The West Ham coach has certainly stirred up a real hornet's nest ahead of
Saturday lunchtime's derby match between Chelsea and the Hammers, belittling
any effect that Avram Grant has had on the team, despite an impressive
string of victories since Jose Mourinho departed.

"They're talking it up but if you care to look at it, there's not much
difference," Curbishley said. "Drogba is a handful, the midfield three are
as strong as you get, John Terry plays when he's fit and the other players
are put around them. The side is well established and they play a certain
way, it's just carried on.

"When he [Grant] took the job on he must have thought, 'I'm gonna win more
than I lose with the squad I've got.' The foundations Mourinho left were
there for everyone to see and he's taken over nice and quietly and picked up
the results."

While it's certainly been a case of evolution rather than revolution at
Stamford Bridge, these comments have surely been designed to ruffle a few
feathers ahead of Saturday's game. While there's no doubt that Grant
presides over a group of talented players, Mourinho's final three matches as
Blues boss had seen the team lose 2-0 at Aston Villa, draw 0-0 at home to
Blackburn and then manage only a 1-1 draw with Rosenborg. The scoreline in
the corresponding fixture on Wednesday night? 4-0 to Chelsea.

Humble Hammer Green is making his mark - Daily Mail

Robert Green is nowhere near his peak as a goalkeeper yet but for tens of
thousands of West Ham supporters, he can already do no wrong. Green's
injury-time penalty save from Jermain Defoe last Sunday immediately assured
him a special place in the hearts of every true Hammers fan - and would have
done even if it hadn't salvaged a point from a feisty London derby. His
friends though, were not best pleased with him, not for his rare mistake
which led to Tottenham's earlier equaliser but for his comments afterwards,
about youngsters spending too much time on PlayStations. "I have friends who
work in the video game world absolutely slaughtering me this week over what
I said," he revealed. "They're far from happy. "I should come clean though.
I did once possess a video game myself a few years ago, played it quite a
lot in fact but it did my head in. It was easy to become addicted to it but
now I prefer a real life rather than one online or crammed inside a six inch
box." Green's pals may not be happy, but his manager is. Alan Curbishley is
not one to throw out compliments lightly but the West Ham manager couldn't
have been more fulsome in praise of his keeper. Curbishley's comments, plus
an unbeaten run of six matches, underline why Green is the London Evening
Standard's Footballer of the Month for October. "Robert is an old-fashioned
type of footballer," said Curbishley. "He's never late, he always prepares
properly, trains as hard as he can, does a bit more, has a shower, eats his
lunch, just gets on with it. "Football is the big thing in his life. He's
worked hard to get where he is. "Since last year, when he came back into the
side after Roy Carroll had been in for a few games, I would say he's been
easily the most consistent keeper in the League."
Despite what his boss says, Green is a bit different to your average player.
He'd rather watch cricket than football on TV and didn't even know England's
result against Croatia until he came in later from a night out with his
friends. "I have my fill of football every day, going in, working hard and
thinking about nothing else but football while I'm there," he explained.
"Too much of it though and I don't think it helps with the end product. I
like to relax, keep away from it as much as I can when I'm not working, it
helps keep me fresh. "If I could drop one thing it would be the whole
paraphernalia that goes with football. "If we could just concentrate on
playing the games I am sure we would be all the better for it. It's nice to
be recognised and praised for doing your job well but I don't really enjoy
the public side of it. Meeting the fans is great, the people who appreciate
what you do, but mainly I want to get on, do well and keep my head down."
The 27-year-old former Norwich goalkeeper though, does have some definite
views on sport in this country. His comments about video games and
youngsters may not have endeared him to his friends but it was a heartfelt
sentiment. During school time a lot of kids are doing one hour a week on
physical education," he said. "I have friends who teach PE in schools and
now, they say, half the time their job is reduced to crowd control. "Sport
has been put on the back burner for years yet governments are as quick as
anyone to jump on an election bandwagon after a sporting success. You can't
under-estimate the value of sport. Just look at the feel-good factor after a
sporting success, even the boost to the economy that brings."
There will be no chance of that next summer now that England failed to
qualify for the Finals of Euro 2008 but does Green believe he will have more
of chance of adding to his one senior cap, when the new coach takes over?
"West Ham is the one thing I can control. I love playing here and I'll carry
on doing that,î he said. "That's all I can do."
Green's spot-kick save against Defoe was his third in succession this season
and he will be ready should he be called upon to improve that record
tomorrow at Stamford Bridge. "Frank Lampard tends to hit his penalties quite
hard," recalled Green, "so I might be diving quite early just to give myself
a chance. "The thing is though, he's taken a few against me in training for
England and I haven't managed to save any yet!"

I'd love to score for West Ham against Chelsea, says ex-Blues striker Cole -
Daily Mail
Last updated at 11:37am on 30th November 2007

Carlton Cole is determined to show Chelsea just what they missed out on when
the West Ham striker returns to his old club tomorrow. The 24-year-old has
found himself spearheading the Hammers attack following a run of injuries to
Alan Curbishley's strikers. Petit questions England commitment of Chelsea
duo Terry and Cole after they miss Croatia clash but play against Derby
Cole, a former England Under-21 international, intends to make the most of
his chance to prove he can cut it at the top level, having had spells at
Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa before eventually leaving Stamford Bridge
for Upton Park in a permanent deal last summer. "There will always be that
extra hunger for a player when they come up against their former club - no
player wants to play their old team and do badly," said Cole, who had worked
his way up through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge. "This is actually the
first time I am playing Chelsea as the visiting team, so it will be weird -
but I am really up for it."
Cole told the club's official website, www.whufc.com: "I will hopefully have
a big impact on the game and to get on the score-sheet as well would be the
icing on the cake." Chelsea have found their consistency again under Avram
Grant, and are unbeaten in 13 matches. The Hammers are in decent form
themselves, having not lost since the start of October. Cole netted in the
1-1 draw with Tottenham at Upton Park last weekend and knows his team are
set for another stern test tomorrow. "I expect a very tough game, it will be
a lot to do with our performance though rather than theirs," said Cole, who
could be paired with former England Under-21 team-mate Dean Ashton tomorrow.
"We will need to go and set up our stall and show we mean business. I think
we will be able to do quite well."
Cole insisted: "We are a team than can go to places and upset teams which we
have shown away from home so far this season. "We will do the same at
Stamford Bridge and try to upset their game plan and get the result we
need."

West Ham boss Curbishley warns refs about Chelsea
tribalfootball.com - November 30, 2007

West Ham United boss Alan Curbishley has had a pop at tomorrow's opponents
Chelsea over their treatment of match officials. Curbishley criticised the
so-called big four's attempts to influence referees, days after Chelsea were
charged with failing to control their players during the 2-0 victory away to
Derby. The club has also only just paid a £30,000 fine for threatening
behaviour towards the referee Mike Dean during the defeat at Old Trafford.
"The big four teams definitely get after the ref a bit more than other
teams," Curbishley said. "All the top teams are that way inclined -
decisions are disputed, especially when they're at home."

Lee Bowyer (hernia) will be assessed ahead of the match and Craig Bellamy

Mullins: Irons can nick a Bridge win - TeamTalk

Hayden Mullins admits West Ham will have to try and hit Chelsea on the break
if they are to get a result at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Chelsea's 4-0
away demolition of Rosenborg in the Champions League on Wednesday night made
it 13 games unbeaten for Avram Grant's side and Mullins is under no
illusions about the size of the task facing the Hammers. However the
midfielder, who has returned from his recent injury lay-off, is confident
his side can achieve a positive result if they play the right way. "We won't
go there and fear them at all," he said. "We know they are a great side and
we know they are a hard team." Mullins added on the club's website: "It is a
good game for us to go there and hit them on the break. "We have done that
to a lot of teams away from home. We look quite good doing it and we know
what we can do. "Who knows? A couple of chances and a bit of luck on the day
and hopefully we can nick something."

Mullins unfazed by weekend test - WHUFC
A solid showing on his return to action has left Hayden Mullins upbeat for
Chelsea
29.11.2007

Hayden Mullins is relishing the prospect of taking on the likes of Frank
Lampard and Joe Cole when West Ham United go to Chelsea on Saturday.

The midfielder returned from a foot injury to play an important role
alongside Mark Noble last weekend in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur and
will not be overawed by the next capital challenge for all the strength of
the opposition. "We won't go there and fear them at all," he said. "We know
they are a great side and we know they are a hard team."

Mullins pointed to successes on the road this season with the club coming
away with points from difficult places to play like Reading and Portsmouth.
"It is a good game for us to go there and hit them on the break. We have
done that to a lot of teams away from home. We look quite good doing it and
we know what we can do."

The 28-year-old believed the return of players like Scott Parker and Dean
Ashton and the sustained good form of the back four and the likes of Carlton
Cole ensured there was every chance of upsetting the odds at Stamford
Bridge. "Who knows? A couple of chances and a bit of luck on the day and
hopefully we can nick something," he added.

Curbs ready for busy month - WHUFC
Alan Curbishley has hailed his squad's attitude as they enter the last month
of the year
29.11.2007

Alan Curbishley is looking for "a decent December" so that his West Ham
United continue to look upwards come the new year.

The month starts with a tricky trip to Chelsea on Saturday although
Curbishley, who was talking exclusively to WHUTV, has positive memories of
his last two trips to Stamford Bridge. In his final season at Charlton
Athletic in the 2005/06 campaign, his former club drew 1-1 in the league
having already earned the same result in the League Cup third round before
knocking out the then champions 5-4 on penalties.

"In some respect you go into the game with not a lot to lose," said
Curbishley, who will have taken a close interest in the west London club's
4-0 win at Rosenborg in the Champions League on Wednesday night. "It is a
local derby and you know the top four are always tough games. I am looking
forward to it.

"When you play the top four teams, there are things that you have got to
deal with and certain players that can win games. For me you have to do a
job on Frank Lampard. He is a player that scores a lot of match-winning
goals from midfield. That is something that I have got to be thinking
about."

Between the 1 December and 1 January trips to Chelsea and Arsenal
respectively, the club have got eight first-team games lined up - including
a cup quarter-final against Everton and the visit of Manchester United. Much
has been made of Curbishley's strength in depth that has led to a six-match
unbeaten run despite injuries, and Curbishley is expecting to make the most
of his squad again.

"Certainly there will be some rotation in this month," he said. "We have got
some big games. We have got the Carling Cup game as well, which is a massive
game for everybody." Hoping to figure this weekend will be Lee Bowyer and
Freddie Ljungberg, adding to last Sunday's return of Hayden Mullins, Mark
Noble, Scott Parker and Dean Ashton. "I am pleased I have got players coming
back. It may give me one or two problems as I know, but they have just to
get on with it."

Regardless of who is selected, Curbishley has no qualms about what he will
see as he looks to move up from tenth position. "Whatever eleven goes out I
expect a result and a performance," he said. "I have nearly been here a year
now and the attitude has turned round - which is general when a new man goes
in. The atmosphere, the feeling and the spirit within the camp is perhaps a
lot better than when I arrived

"I am hoping that we have a decent December and we push on in the new year.
I just get the feeling that with all the changes and people being given a
chance that there is a bit of attitude about the place. We are committed as
a team - the eleven players and the subs. You can see that before the games.
They are wishing each other the best and saying 'let's get out there and get
a result'. That is something I wanted to generate here and let's hope that
continues."

Ladies up for the cup - WHUFC
West Ham United Ladies will take on Queen's Park Rangers this Sunday
29.11.2007

West Ham United Ladies take a break from league action this Sunday when they
play host to Queen's Park Rangers in the Women's FA Cup third round.

The west London outfit are one division below the Hammers in the South West
Combination but captain Julia Setford is not taking the 1pm fixture at
Harlow Town for granted. "We are no strangers to QPR, and over the years we
have had many a match with them," she said. "We know a lot about each other.

"We could probably call this one of our 'bogey' teams. We've always found it
tough against QPR and over the past five years honours have been fairly
close. Before we were promoted to the FA Premier Women's League, I was quite
glad when the league decided to move them to the South West Combination! We
drew them in the cup last year, again, a very tough game which we came out
narrow 1-0 winners. So this will be a very hard game.

The Hammers are fresh after their league trip to Newquay was postponed last
week. Setford added: "After all the planning and preparation, the game was
called off on Friday afternoon. I must admit, I was a bit deflated. I was
looking forward to the trip, spending the weekend with the team and planning
lots of embarrassing stunts for Grace Coombs, as it was her 17th birthday
that Sunday. The rest would have done the team good though and hopefully
we'll look sharp."

Curbs hits out at sackings - SSN
Hammers boss critical of short-term thinking towards managers
By James Pearson Last updated: 29th November 2007

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley thinks Premier League chairman are often
too quick to react when their respective teams are struggling. Although
England's top-flight is not even at the half-way mark this term Wigan,
Birmingham, Derby, Chelsea, Bolton and Tottenham have all changed managers.
Curbishley, who spent 15 years in charge of Charlton, believes clubs must
adopt a long-term strategy with managers if they are to succeed. "I think
every manager knows what the situation is, the expectation level," he told
Sky Sports News.

Pressure

"I said earlier in the season that whoever finds themselves in the bottom
six is going to come under pressure, whoever they are. Even if they're
expected to come in the bottom six they are going to come under pressure.
That's a fact of life at the moment. "We've had more managers go already
this season. It's a tough situation for us. It doesn't breed that longevity
that you need. It's perhaps becoming short-term thinking."

Progress

Meanwhile, Curbishley has been pleased with West Ham's progress this term
after turning back page headlines into wins on the pitch. "Perhaps we this
season we needed a solid season and be on the back pages for the right
reasons," he continued. "We had lots of things going on last year. Every day
seemed to have us in the headlines. We had more column inches last year than
any other year. "We need a solid season and perhaps start to build
something. You can only do that slowly. You can't do that any other way.
"That's what I said when I came to the club. That's what we're attempting to
do."

CARLTON COLE

Games in November

Bolton (h)
Derby (a)
Tottenham (h)

Carlton Cole is the player of the month for November after putting in a
number of good performances, scoring once and making two of the seven goals
scored during the month. It is quite amazing that we are even talking about
Carlton Cole at all, with his West Ham future looking in serious doubt
during the summer.
But with injuries to Dean Ashton, Craig Bellamy and Bobby Zamora, Cole has
seized his chance despite being abused by many West Ham supporters. He has
answered his critics by playing well and making an impact on our season, and
the month of November confirmed that he is an asset to this club.
Premiership clubs need a range of options in the striking positions, and
Carlton Cole staked his claim for a regular place in the starting line up,
and if he can continue to score a few and set others up, he will be
difficult to displace..

In Second place was last months winner, Robert Green who has continued his
great form, and his penalty save against Tottenham was just another
highlight to a fantastic season he is having.

Curbishley plays down Grant's impact at Chelsea
'They're talking it up but if you care to look at it, there's not much
difference'
Sachin Nakrani
Thursday November 29, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

The West Ham manager Alan Curbishley has ignited a potential war of words
with his Chelsea counterpart Avram Grant by insisting the Israeli has done
nothing to evolve Chelsea since becoming the manager there and is "picking
up" wins because of the foundations left by his predecessor, Jose Mourinho.
Curbishley expects the side he encounters at Stamford Bridge in Saturday
lunchtime's Premier League fixture to mirror the one West Ham played last
season in both style and line-up. Such comments are sure to anger Grant, who
has put great emphasis on the improving quality of Chelsea's football since
he became manager in late September in an attempt to step out of Mourinho's
shadow and establish his worth at the club.

A comparison between Grant's 14 matches in charge of Chelsea and Mourinho's
last 14 indicate the club is not only winning more regularly but doing so in
more flamboyant style. Chelsea have won 10 times since the 2-0 defeat to
Manchester United on September 23, Grant's first as manager, scoring 30
goals in the process. Running from the end of last season and until the 1-1
draw at home to Rosenborg on September 18, Mourinho's last match in charge,
Chelsea won only four out of 14, scoring 14 times.

But as far as Curbishley is concerned, the only difference at the club is
the persona of the man in the hot seat. "He [Grant] was the perfect solution
for the change Chelsea wanted. He's quite reserved, different to what they
had."

Curbishley also criticised the so-called big four's attempts to influence
referees, days after Chelsea were charged with failing to control their
players during the 2-0 victory away to Derby. The club has also only just
paid a £30,000 fine for threatening behaviour towards the referee Mike Dean
during the defeat at Old Trafford. "The big four teams definitely get after
the ref a bit more than other teams," Curbishley said. "All the top teams
are that way inclined - decisions are disputed, especially when they're at
home."

Curbishley is hoping Freddie Ljungberg will be in contention for the weekend
fixture after missing Sunday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham with a migraine. Dean
Ashton, a long-term injury concern, could also start.

Alan Curbishley questions Avram Grant's 'new' style - The Times
Gary Jacob

Alan Curbishley has challenged the perception that Avram Grant has added
style to the regimented structure that Chelsea adopted under José Mourinho.
The West Ham United manager has also claimed that Grant inherited a
relatively straightforward task at Stamford Bridge and that Chelsea, his
side's opponents tomorrow, put excessive pressure on referees.

Roman Abramovich, the owner, dismissed Mourinho in September, reportedly for
failing to provide thrilling football. Grant has since won ten of his 14
matches in charge, maintaining the system of his predecessor but allowing
the players more freedom.

"I don't think the style has changed," Curbishley said. "They play a certain
way. It suits them. They are talking about it as if it's a different game.
The side was established before and there has been no change to personnel.
All that has happened over the past couple of months is that they have got
their players back."

Chelsea were hindered earlier in the season by the absence of Didier Drogba
and John Terry, who had knee injuries, and Frank Lampard with a thigh
problem. They have returned. "When Grant took the job on, he must have
thought: 'I would win more than I will lose with this squad,' " Curbishley
said. "He has gone about his job quietly and let the team flourish.

"But the foundations and squad are what Mourinho left. Grant has picked up
the results, which helps. They are looking confident. If you wanted to have
a change [from Mourinho], he was the perfect solution. He is reserved,
someone a little bit different to what they had."

Curbishley said that he did not have a problem with Grant not having the
required coaching qualifications at present. Grant has an A-licence but must
attain his Uefa Pro Licence to remain as first-team coach in the long term.
Curbishley sits on the League Managers Association executive committee, the
organisation that has maintained that managers must have the necessary
badges to work at the highest level. "He is vastly experienced," Curbishley
said.

The West Ham manager has warned Howard Webb, the referee, who will officiate
at the Barclays Premier League match tomorrow, that he will come under
pressure from the home team. Chelsea were charged with failing to control
their players after they confronted Andre Marriner, the referee, over
Michael Essien's sending-off in the 2-0 victory away to Derby County last
Saturday. "The top four teams get after the referees more than the other
teams," he said.

Curbishley blasts big four - The Mirror
Ann Gripper 30/11/2007

Chelsea are bully boys when it comes to the referee - but the other Big Four
sides are just as bad, reckons Alan Curbishley. The Blues are in hot water
again after their players surrounded ref Andre Marriner when he sent off
Michael Essien against Derby last Saturday for an elbow on Kenny Miller.
Manager Avram Grant, who has failed to stamp out the culture of berating the
officials which took root under previous boss Jose Mourinho, defended his
players' right to protest against decisions. The weekend scenes at Pride
Park saw Chelsea charged with failing to control their players for the
second time since Grant took over, the first coming in his debut defeat at
Old Trafford which brought a £30,000 fine. But Curbishley, who takes his
West Ham side to Stamford Bridge tomorrow, believes Chelsea are not alone in
their bad behaviour.

NO PASSENGERS FOR HAMMERS - CURBS - Football365
Posted 30/11/07 05:56EmailPrintSave

Chelsea 1/4, Draw 4/1, West Ham 8/1

Alan Curbishley knows each and every one of his West Ham players must be on
top form if they are to get anything out of Saturday's trip to Chelsea. The
Hammers are unbeaten in six matches, thanks in no small part to a dramatic
penalty save from goalkeeper Robert Green deep into stoppage time against
Tottenham last weekend. Curbishley, though, knows his men will face an
uphill battle to get another positive result from their journey across the
capital.
Despite a troubled start to the campaign which saw Chelsea controversially
part company with manager Jose Mourinho, the Blues - now under the guidance
of Israeli Avram Grant - have slowly moved through the gears and found some
consistency. The 4-0 away demolition of Rosenborg in the Champions League on
Wednesday night secured a place in the last 16 of Europe's elite club
competition and made it a run of 13 matches unbeaten. Curbishley is in no
doubt of the task facing the Hammers tomorrow. "When you play a top-four
team you need a few things going for you," he said. "You also need your
players to all be on form - you can not carry anyone."
Striker Dean Ashton is in contention for a place in the starting XI, having
sharpened his match fitness with a brace for the reserves in midweek, and
Curbishley could elect to play the England hopeful in a two-man attack
alongside Carlton Cole. Midfielder Scott Parker also featured for the second
string against Derby, and is expected to feature on Saturday, while Freddie
Ljungberg will be back in the squad after showing no ill effects from the
migraine which ruled him out against Spurs. However, the fitness of Lee
Bowyer (hernia) will be assessed ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge and
striker Craig Bellamy (groin) is still out.
Midfielder Hayden Mullins has returned from his recent injury lay-off, and
is relishing the chance to go toe-to-toe with the likes of former Hammer
Frank Lampard tomorrow. "We won't go there and fear them at all," Mullins
said. "We know they are a great side and we know they are a hard team."
Mullins told the club's website: "It is a good game for us to go there and

YOU AV IT SO EASY – CURBS - The Star

revolution, sneering: "You have the easiest job in football!" West Ham hope
the goals dry up for their bitter rivals in tomorrow's lunchtime derby at
Stamford Bridge after a recent return to form. But Curbishley reckons the
Israeli can't claim the credit for turning Chelsea around – because he

Palace keen on West Ham's Ephraim - Clubcall

Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock will try again to sign Hogan Ephraim from
West Ham when the transfer window re-opens in January. The Palace boss
failed in a bid to sign the pacy midfielder on the last day of the emergency
loan window last week but is still keen on him. Ephraim recently returned to
Upton Park after a loan spell at QPR where he played 13 games, starting
eight, and scored twice including notching on his last match for the Loftus
Road club against Hull.

Hammers wide boy on Warnock's list - Clubcall

Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock is planning a January raid for West Ham
winger Hogan Ephraim - according to reports. The Selhurst Park boss is keen
to add width to his misfiring Eagles side and recently sent Portsmouth loan
man Franck Songo'o back to Fratton Park to persue other avenues. Ephraim is
now thought to be a target for a transfer window swoop after he caught the
eye of Palace scouts during a loan stint at QPR earlier this season.

Faubert battling back to fitness - WHUFC
The manager has revealed good news on Julien Faubert while speaking to WHUTV
28.11.2007

Julien Faubert should be back in training next week as the France winger
steps up his return from an achilles injury, Alan Curbishley has exclusively
revealed on WHUTV. Faubert was hurt in the 1-0 friendly defeat by Sigma
Olomouc on 17 July during the club's pre-season tour of Austria. It came
little more than a fortnight after he had moved to the Boleyn Ground from
Bordeaux in his homeland. George Cooper, the club's head physiotherapist,
had said a month ago that Faubert was running again and was looking to focus
on special movements designed to develop muscular power.

Speaking to WHUTV, Curbishley said: "We are expecting him back here at the
training ground next week. He has been off in a rehab clinic in the south of
France. It sounds nice but it is where the French players go to recover. He
has worked ever so hard so we are hoping he may be back in contention in the
new year. Certainly by the end of January. I would like to think if he has a
decent rehab out on the pitches then he shouldn't be far off that."

With Scott Parker, Hayden Mullins, Mark Noble and Dean Ashton all fit again,
Curbishley revealed Anton Ferdinand was still out with a hamstring injury
but there was more positive news on Lee Bowyer, who is back in full training
after a hernia operation. "I am sure he will put himself up for selection
this weekend at Chelsea," said Curbishley, who added that "Freddie Ljungberg
is fit" after missing Sunday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur with a
migraine.

The club are looking to extend the unbeaten run to seven matches with
Saturday's away trip to Chelsea, and the manager admitted: "For the past
three or four weeks I have not had any selection problems but I certainly
have now."

Ashton backs Kickz commitment - WHUFC
Dean Ashton and the Sky Sports cameras put the community department in the
spotlight
28.11.2007

The excellent work carried out by West Ham United in the Community has had
some high-profile television coverage.

A recent visit by Dean Ashton to a special Kickz project open day, held at
the department's training ground in Beckton, was filmed by Sky Sports for a
special feature. Backed by the Football Foundation and the Met Police
Authority, Kickz provides three sessions a week - allowing the community
staff to reach in excess of 350 youngsters each time.

Ashton saw at first hand some of the good work being done - not least a
'show racism the red card' workshop with former club favourite Leroy
Rosenior and also watched some special coaching sessions. Speaking to WHUTV,
the striker said it was great to see the efforts made to "get kids off the
street and into football".

He added: "There are some great sessions and great people. The kids really
look like they are enjoying themselves. If they weren't here, they would be
on the streets or just be at home. To get them here, get them active and
involved in football can only be good for the game and you never know there
might be some good players here.

"There were things like this when I was younger but not on this scale. I
don't think it was quite as big as it is now. It is a credit to the people
who have worked hard here that so many people come."

In turn, Andrew Morgan, the club's head of community development, paid
tribute to the support from players and coaches. He said: "For the work we
do it does help when you have role models come down whether that is Alan
Curbishley or Dean Ashton. It is fantastic for us and fantastic for the
young people."

Among those working hard to help deliver the Kickz project to the youngsters
aged between 12 and 19 is social inclusion manager Dan Godfrey. Speaking to
WHUTV, he said: "We are using football as a vehicle to overcome the
traditional barriers of crime, drugs and alcohol. We want to help youngsters
gain direction in their lives."

He added that one such success story was of a young coach called Tim, who
has "come right the way through" the scheme and has since taken his Level 1
coaching certificate. Tim is now helping to give back. "He is our future as
a department," Godfrey added. The Sky Sports cameras were particularly taken
with Tim, interviewing him and also getting him to try his hand at putting
the questions himself in a special on-air interview with Ashton.

# whufc.com will have more from Tim later in the week, while you can check
out exclusive coverage from the Kickz project over the coming days on WHUTV.
West Ham United in the Community work in a number of ways to forge strong
links through sporting and social activities with the surrounding boroughs,
districts and county councils. To read more, click here.

Chelsea challenge fires up Solano - WHUFC
Nolberto Solano sees no reason why West Ham United cannot do well this
Saturday
28.11.2007

Nolberto Solano says full concentration will be required when West Ham
United go to Chelsea looking to upset the odds and claim an away victory.

The west London club have not lost a home league fixture since 21 February
2004 and are bidding to make it 70 consecutive games unbeaten at Stamford
Bridge this Saturday. Although Chelsea have come out on top in the last five
home and away meetings between the teams, West Ham United fans will dream of
a repeat of a 3-2 away success on 28 September 2002, a victory inspired by a
memorable two goals from Paolo Di Canio.

Hoping to inspire the Hammers in similar fashion this weekend will be
Solano, a gifted performer who has added welcome creativity and composure to
Alan Curbishley's side in recent weeks. Proof of that was his match-turning
debut appearance last month as a substitute in the 3-1 home win against
Sunderland before scoring with a wonderful free-kick in the 5-0 success away
to Derby County.

"I am looking forward to Chelsea," the former Newcastle United midfielder
said. "It is always a big game. It is going to be tough because Chelsea are
racing for the title. They don't want to drop points and always expect to
take the three points. But if we concentrate, play to 100 per cent of our
best and give everything then we have got a good chance of getting a
result."

Solano is more renowned for his assist-making than his goalscoring and his
thoughtful play was very much in evidence in the 1-1 draw against Tottenham
Hotspur last Sunday. Played in by a clever reverse pass by Luis Boa Morte,
Solano burst through on the right and bore down on Paul Robinson's goal.
Just as most at the Boleyn Ground expected a shot from a tight angle, the
Peruvian played a perfect pass across goal for the unmarked Carlton Cole to
score.

Despite that superb team goal, Tottenham were able to battle back well for a
point, leaving Solano frustrated. "In the first half, we did quite well," he
said. "We created a few chances and we should probably have closed the game.
We tried our best and we are a little bit disappointed at the end. Still, it
is not easy to play against Spurs. They are a good side and have very high
quality players. We tried to work hard and to win.

"We were in a great position but that's what happens. In a derby, it is
always going to be difficult. They are a good side but I believe the team
can still do much better." Chelsea will be another capital clash and Solano
expects the travelling supporters to be in full voice again as they were at
the weekend. "The fans were really behind us," he said. "I am used to
playing derbies with Newcastle against Sunderland. I know how special it is
for the fans and they do not want to lose these games."

Solano had 20 minutes on Sunday in midfield alongside former Newcastle
colleague Scott Parker, who had come on as substitute, before making way
himself in the closing stages. Along with another former team-mate Lee
Bowyer, who is returning to fitness after a hernia operation, the trio have
plenty of experience of each other's games. The 32-year-old believed having
players like Parker and Bowyer back in contention could only be positive.

"It is nice to see Scott Parker back, it is nice to see everybody," he said.
"It is better for the team. When you have a big squad it is difficult for
the manager but it is better to have every player fit. That is the most
important thing because we need to try and do well. We want to finish in the
top eight if we can." Chelsea away will surely be a true test of those
ambitions but Solano knows success comes by setting sights high.

We've got Harry Redknapp on H Wing - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 28th November 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Former West Ham manager and England hopeful Harry Redknapp has been arrested
by police investigating corruption in football.

Redknapp - who managed the Hammers between 1994 and 2001 - was arrested
yesterday along with former West Ham employee Peter Storrie in relation to
the corruption investigation.

The 60-year-old Poplar-born manager was questioned at Chichester Police
Station, close to his home in Poole. The charges are understood to relate to
events which occured long after Redknapp had been sacked by West Ham in the
summer of 2001.

Also arrested in connection with the investigation were former Portsmouth
Chairman Milan Mandaric, Redknapp's favourite agent Willie McKay and former
Portsmouth midfielder Andy Faye.

McKay was involved in a number of transfers involving West Ham United during
Redknapp's seven year tenure in East London. Redknapp has previously denied
any knowledge of sweeteners being paid to football managers.

Storrie, the former MD at West Ham was similarly dismissed from his position
in East London. After leaving West Ham he spent time at Southend United and
Notts County before joining up with Redknapp once again at Portsmouth under
Mandaric.

Harry Redknapp has been touted as a possible successor to the departed Steve
McClaren as head coach of the England national team.

However the timing of the release of this news - which, if not deliberate,
would represent a huge coincidence - would appear to scupper any chance
Redknapp had of realising that particular dream.

Faubert eyes return - SSN
Frenchman expected for training next week
By Carla Hilton Last updated: 28th November 2007

West Ham winger Julien Faubert is expected to be back in training next week
and could be returning to action in the first team as early as January.
Faubert, who joined West Ham in the summer, picked up an Achilles injury
shortly after his move and has been sidelined ever since. But Hammers boss
Alan Curbishley says he is hopeful the 24-year-old will be back in action
soon. "We are expecting him back here at the training ground next week,"
said Curbishley. "He has been off in a rehab clinic in the South of France,"
he added. "It sounds nice but it is where the French players go to recover.
"He has worked hard, ever so hard so we are hoping he may be back in
contention in the New Year. Certainly by the end of January."
The Hammers boss will also welcome the return of Dean Ashton and Scott
Parker who are both nearing full fitness after suffering knee injuries. Both
players came on as substitutes in the Hammers' 1-1 draw with Spurs at the
weekend as well as playing 90 minutes for the reserves in their win over
Derby days later.
"Both of them got 90 minutes, both of them are looking a lot better and it
will be in the bank," said Curbishley. "They are nearer full fitness."

A View From Stamford Bridge - A Chelsea Fans View - West Ham Online
Match Reporter - Wed Nov 28 2007

What do you expect from Chelsea this season?

Expectations changed dramatically when Jose was sacked in September, I
started the season dreaming of a Champions League/Premier League double,
went through a short period where simply qualification for next years
Champions League seemed all I could hope for, and now think I'll settle for
one major trophy (and yes, I am aware how smug that sounds - we've really
been spoiled the past few years).

Who have been your star men this season?

Carvalho has been immense in holding together a constantly changing back
five, we're only fortunate that his injury has coincided with Terry's return
to fitness. Cech has recovered from an uncharacteristically shaky start and
for all of Cudicini's qualities - can't return too soon. Drogba's form has
continued from last year (shame about his mouth though) and of course your
"favourite son" Frank Lampard has returned from injury to play at a high
level very quickly.

Who do you think shouldn't be in your starting 11?

It's an obvious answer, but you can't look much further than Shevchenko.

How did you rate your performances so far this season?

We're winning more than we perhaps expected to at this stage in Grants
reign, but I think we all feel there's more to come.

Is Avram Grant bringing more style and flair to the side and can playing a
more attractive way bring the same kind of success you've had in recent
years?

He's clearly been briefed to play a more expansive game, and there's no
reason that it can't work. It took Mourinho's "winning above all" mentality
to turn us from underachievers to Champions, and now he's done the work,
there's no reason that another manager can't take it on. Whether Avram
Grant's the man to do that remains to be seen.

What do you make of your new 3 man management team?

We'll judge them by results and performances at the end of the season - it's
too soon to say.

We all know the success Jose Mourinho brought to Chelsea, was he unfairly
treated by the owner and board?

Possibly, but it was kind of inevitable from the start that he'd depart in
acrimonious circumstances.

How would it go down with the Chelsea faithful if Jose Mourinho took the
England job?

We'd be absolutely delighted - the man's clearly a winner, and let's face it
if he's managing England, then he's not managing one of our direct rivals
and that has to be a good thing!

John Terry and Frank Lampard have joined the £100,000+ a week earners. Do
you feel they held the club to ransom and do you agree with the amount of
wages you're paying to certain players?

Not at all - they're paid what the market says they're worth. The figures
are so large that it's easy to lose focus, but if you heard that someone at
one of your competitors was doing the same job as you, as well as you and
being paid more than you, wouldn't you use that knowledge to get your own
pay rise?

Drogba recently said he regretted joining Chelsea and has been very vocal
since Mourinho left. How has that gone down?

There's a long history of players with French backgrounds whinging to the
media, so long as the big man's performing on the pitch, then that'll do for
now.

Are you worried that the amount of clubs now under new wealthy owners could
spell the end of your guaranteed top 4 spot?

We're still in wonderland at the past three years progress, so don't worry
too much about what the future may bring.

Do you fear for the long term future of Chelsea? And what do you think will
happen to the club should Roman walk away?

See my previous answer - we've lived with an uncertain long term future for
35 years now, so in some senses, nothing much has changed.

Jose Mourinho recently described Chelsea fans as soft, pampered middle class
types. Without doubt Chelsea do seem to have attracted more of the new type
of fans then anyone else. Is that tag fair?

Yes, unfortunately so, and it's up to the "long term" hardcore to respond to
initiatives like "Return to the Shed" and bring some of the old atmosphere
back.

Do you think Chelsea has become a soulless club over the past few years?

It's a very corporate place these days, which has pro's and con's, but how
much of a "soul" did it have under the previous owner?

Is there a place for things such as Marco Pierre White's restaurant at
football grounds and is it just another sign the game is pricing out the
working class man?

With the ground situated where it is, then why not make the most of it? The
chippy on the Kings Road is still there and still going a great pie and
chips if that's what you prefer.

It's £45/£48 in the away end Saturday, are the ticket prices out of control?

Yes, but like sheep we still come

What's your view on the Carlos Tevez affair?

He's an ugly bugger!

How do you think West Ham will do this season?

You've got some great players and your 'keeper should have been between the
sticks last week at Wembley - discipline will be the key to your success or
lack of it.

What West Ham players worry you most?

None - we've enough class to impose our game on you.

What do you think of Carlton Cole and was he given a fair crack of the whip
at Chelsea?

I first saw him aged 15, scoring a hat-trick for the juniors against Arsenal
and he looked the real deal. Football today, and particularly Chelsea today
say's you don't get long to make an impression, and in the past he's not
worked hard enough. I hope he does continue his progress with you, because
somewhere in there is a fine striker.

How do you view West Ham fans?

If I hear one more time where you're going to stick our blue flag then I'll
scream - get a new song for us eh?!

What are you favourite flavour crisps (site joke)?

Scampi flavoured fries - don't you just love it when your fingers smell all
fishy (dodgy joke in return!)

Prediction?

1-0 to us

Jeroen tribute evening proves a big success - Newham Recorder
28 November 2007

FORMER team-mates and friends of Jeroen Boere joined over 160 guests for a
fund-raising evening in aid of his son Brandon. The ex-Hammers' striker, who
was working as an estate agent in Spain, tragically committed suicide in
August. His one-time strike partner, Tony Cottee, hosted the evening at
Sawbridgeworth's Manor of Groves Hotel, where the raffle and auction of
memorabilia raised a substantial amount for young Brandon. Other ex-players
attending the evening were Kenny Brown, who played with Boere at West Ham,
Ray Houghton, an old Crystal Palace colleague and 60s West Ham star, Eddie
Bovington, who knew Boere after his playing days. Each paid tribute to the
late Dutch player, as did Recorder and West Ham club photographer Steve
Bacon, another of the invited guests.

Deano makes it a double in rout - Newham Recorder
28 November 2007

FA PREMIER
RESERVE LEAGUE
Derby 0 West Ham 8

DEAN ASHTON struck twice to help the Hammers reserves to an 8-0 mauling of a
hapless Derby at Burton Albion FC on Monday night. The former Norwich
striker certainly staked his claim for a starting berth for Saturday's derby
clash with Chelsea by playing the entire 90 minutes, leading the line
brilliantly and bagging a brace. Scott Parker also got a full game as the
Hammers' second string ran riot against the Rams. Kyel Reid broke the
deadlock for Kevin Keen's men in the 20th minute, sprinting down the left
wing before cutting inside and firing home. Minutes later and it was 2-0 as
the excellent Parker played in Ashton who rounded the Derby keeper before
slotting home. Ashton then doubled his tally with a fine header from a Jack
Collison cross before Collison himself got on the end of a Hogan Ephraim
centre to make it 4-0 at the break. Ephraim had a major part to play in
number five too as it was his low cross that was put into his own net by
Derby's Keane. The visitors were in irresistible form and it wasn't long
before Ephraim got the goal that his performance deserved, taking an Ashton
pass in his stride before netting. On the half hour mark, coah Keen
introduced Junior Stanislas and he was to have an instant impact, firing
home from long range and completing the rout with a header from a Reid
cross.

* Meanwhile, West Ham reserves star Tony Stokes has agreed to join Stevenage
Borough on a two-month loan.

Injury-free Upson looks to England - newham Recorder
28 November 2007

MATTHEW UPSON has set his sights on an England recall after finally seeming
to have shaken off the injury demons that have been haunting him since his
arrival at Upton Park, writes LUKE WILSON. The former Arsenal centre half
has struggled to recapture the form that encouraged Alan Curbishley to
splash out £6million on him back in January and spent more time in the
treatment room than on the pitch for the Hammers last season. However, with
13 league starts to his name so far this campaign, Upson remains ever
hopeful that his solid performances in the heart of the West Ham defence
will force the hand of the incoming national boss, whoever that may be.
"It's something that's a massive target for me," he admitted after Sunday's
hard-fought 1-1 draw with fierce rivals Spurs. "It would be a great personal
achievement for me to make another squad and play for England again. "It's
been three years or so since my last cap but for me, it's all about changing
people's opinion of me. "I think I'm doing that every week with the way I'm
playing, the things I'm working on and the style that I'm trying to play
with. "Hopefully, whoever takes over will wipe the slate clean and give
everyone the opportunity to get in the squad on their current form in the
Premier League."
With Jamie Carragher having retired from the international scene and both
John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, like Upson, having had their fair share of
fitness battles, the door could be open for the 28-year-old to add to the
seven caps he has been handed by his country thus far. Upson is seemingly
unworried as to who takes over the running of the national side, hoping
instead that whoever does will haul England out of the doldrums following
their dismal attempt to qualify for next summer's European Championships.
"It should be the best man for the job, English, European, whatever - it
makes no difference," he mused.
"The one thing that needs to be looked at is the selection process the
chiefs at the FA will go through to get the right person - that's crucial.
"They need to have a criteria and a formula of what they want to get out of
the England manager and what they think is going to be successful. "There
are people willing to give their expertise in that area to make sure that
person is the right one."
The Hammers centre half also believes that it can only be a matter of time
until team-mate Rob Green is picked for his country, while drawing technical
comparisons between the Hammers stopper and a certain former England keeper.
"I don't think he's going to have to do too much," he said. "There's
obviously going to be changes, I think the way he's playing and if he can
maintain that form, then he'll be in the squad sooner or later. He's really
performing to a top level at the moment. "I played in front of David Seaman
quite a few times and you can see there is a likeness there as they're both
quite calm. "At the moment, Robert is being very commanding, mentally he's
in a good place, his kicking is good and his whole game is really looking
solid. "If you look at the recent goalkeeper situation with England it would
make sense that he should be in the squad, maybe even first choice."
Upson meanwhile just seems delighted with his return to regular first team
action and knows exactly what he has to do make an international return.
"I'm pleased with how things are going. I'm working hard on being
consistent, getting better and working on the things I need to in order to
improve myself," he revealed. "So I've got some targets that I want to meet
and I'm working hard to achieve those."
Whether his industry will be rewarded with an England call-up any time soon
remains to be seen but Upson has always been a driven individual and will
keep striving to better himself each and every day.

Faubert ready to return - ViewLondon.co.uk

West Ham United winger Julien Faubert is set to return to training next week
for the first time since he injured his Achilles tendon in pre-season. The
Frenchman has yet to play a competitive match for the Hammers since signing
for the club from Bordeaux in the summer. He was hurt during the 1-0
friendly defeat to Sigma Olomouc on July 17th during the club's tour of
Austria and initial estimations suggested he could be out for up to six
months. Speaking to the club's official TV channel WHUTV, manager Alan
Curbishley said he expects the midfielder to rejoin his team-mates at
training in the next seven days and has pencilled in a return to the
first-team within two months. "We are expecting him back here at the
training ground next week," said Curbishley. "He has been off in a rehab
clinic in the south of France. It sounds nice but it is where the French
players go to recover. "He has worked ever so hard so we are hoping he may
be back in contention in the new year, certainly by the end of January. "I
would like to think if he has a decent rehab out on the pitches then he
shouldn't be far off that."
In addition to the return of Faubert, Curbishley also confirmed that a
number of the Hammers' other injury worries are now returning to the
first-team fold.
Scott Parker, Hayden Mullins, Mark Noble and Dean Ashton are all reported to
be fully match-fit and are back in contention for selection ahead of this
weekend's London derby against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Old pals' act that survived fallout from Upton Park - The Times
Nick Szczepanik

When Harry Redknapp said "I don't have anything to do with transfers" at one
of the weekly press conferences at Portsmouth's training ground in Eastleigh
last year, it was to general amusement and incredulity until he added:
"Peter Storrie handles all that." Then it made sense.

Redknapp and Storrie, the Portsmouth chief executive, go back a fair way.
The two worked together at West Ham United, where Storrie was chief
executive, then director of football until his contract was terminated by
the club in April 1999.

Although Redknapp was accused of engineering Storrie's dismissal over the
sale of Andrew Impey, the defender, Redknapp said: "We have had one argument
in six years working together. We were going back out socially with our
wives two days after that all blew up. Peter has been great for West Ham. He
played a major role in establishing our youth academy and he has backed me
and my staff all the way."

Some were pleased to see Storrie leave Upton Park after his role in the
ill-judged bond scheme that provoked fierce protests. He moved to Southend
United and Notts County before joining Portsmouth in early 2002, becoming
chief executive in late February. Redknapp was director of football and the
chairman was Milan Mandaric, who was also arrested yesterday.

All three were in for some interesting times. Last year, for example, they
were asked by the FA Compliance Unit to explain why "certain names" appeared
on a printout by Betfair of punters who made money betting on Redknapp's
"surprise" return from Southampton to Portsmouth in December 2005.

But when Mandaric handed Portsmouth over to Alexandre Gaydamak last year,
Storrie became the public face of the board, with Gaydamak making few public
statements. Storrie's profile was further raised in June when he was invited
to serve as a member of the FA Council.

"It is good recognition for the club, so I am delighted to be asked to serve
as a member," he said. It may also be the type of embarrassment the FA would
be glad to have avoided.

West Ham United boss Alan Curbishley has slammed the Premiership reserves
