Edgar's new deal
WHUFC.com
It has been a week to remember for Anthony Edgar and his famous cousin
03.06.2010

It has been quite a week for Anthony Edgar. On Tuesday, the West Ham United
winger's cousin Jermain Defoe was named in Fabio Capello's 23-man England
squad for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The news was greeted by a
family get-together where Defoe thanked his family for the support they have
given him since his years as a member of the Hammers Academy. Two days
later, Edgar followed his famous relation's good news with some of his own
by agreeing a new one-year contract with the club. Having made his
first-team debut in the FA Cup third-round meeting with Arsenal in January,
the 19-year-old is targeting a regular place in new manager Avram Grant's
matchday squad next season. Speaking to WHUTV, Edgar said: "I'm definitely
pleased to sign a new contract. I just want to push on from last year. I
played in the FA Cup last year and hopefully I can play in the Premier
League and show what I can do. "It was incredible. I couldn't wait to get
on. I think I came on for approximately seven minutes and I couldn't wait to
touch the ball. I was just screaming 'Give me the ball' so I could show what
I can do. I just had to be patient and when I got the ball, I tried to do
something and show everyone what I can do. "I want to play first-team
football here. I have seen a lot of the youngsters from the Academy where I
grew up hit the big stage and I hopefully I can do that. This is where I
live and this is my club. I want to play for this club every week and
hopefully that ambition will sign me on. "This is like a trial again for me
really. I have got to show the new manager what I can do and what I've been
doing since I was young, getting at it and showing what I can do on the
pitch. "He'll see that I've got flair. I think I've got the ability and got
what it takes, so hopefully I'll show him and prove to him that I can get
there."

It's Hammers Av-a-go hero

AVRAM GRANT had his appointment as West Ham manager hailed as the 'beginning
of a new era'. At least that is what club co-owners David Sullivan and David
Gold are hoping. They have offered the former Chelsea boss a four-year deal
at Upton Park. The Israeli, who took Portsmouth to last month's FA Cup
final, quit the relegated South Coast club two weeks ago. Sullivan and Gold
see the 55-year-old as the ideal candidate to lead the cash-strapped
Londoners forward. Grant got Pompey playing good football last season,
despite crippling debts that eventually saw them pushed into administration.
And the hope is he can now transform the Hammers following the departure of
former boss Gianfranco Zola. Gold declared: "I have to say that, having met
Avram and spent some time with him, we have got our man. "He is a perfect
fit. We needed experience and stability. He's a footballing man and, quite
frankly, his reputation speaks for itself. "He has a great sense of humour
and I'm sure the players will relate to him and the fans will warm to him.
"It's the beginning of a new era at West Ham United."
Former Birmingham co-owner Sullivan said: "I'm delighted to welcome Avram to
West Ham and am confident he will prove a success. "We have taken our time
over this appointment and are certain we have the right man. "We are all
looking forward to next season, with new players coming in, and Avram's
arrival is just the latest reason for real optimism."
Grant, whose contract is subject to him getting a work permit, will swiftly
want to convince the likes of Matthew Upson, Robert Green and Scott Parker
to stay put. He also has Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng, with whom he worked
at Fratton Park, and Tottenham's Jamie O'Hara high up on his wishlist of new
signings. Grant said: "I'm proud and honoured to be the manager of West Ham.
It's an exciting challenge. I'm ready to do my best. "West Ham is a
fantastic club with great fans and a history respected around the world. I'm
looking forward to getting to work with my players in July and preparing for
the new season."

West Ham United confirm appointment of Avram Grant as new manager
The Times

West Ham United have appointed Avram Grant as their new manager on a
four-year contract, subject to a work permit, the club have confirmed. The
Israeli led Portsmouth to the FA Cup Final last month against his former
club Chelsea, but couldn't prevent the financially-troubled side being
relegated from the Barclays Premier League last season.
"I am proud and honoured to be the manager of West Ham," Grant told the
club's official website. "It will be an exciting challenge and I am ready to
do my best. I am already looking forward to getting to work with my players
in July and preparing for the new season."
David Sullivan, the West Ham co-owner, is looking forward to working with
Grant. "I am confident he will prove a success," he said. "We have taken our
time over this appointment and are certain we have got the right man. "We
are all looking forward to next season with new players coming in and
Avram's arrival is just the latest reason for real optimism."
David Gold, co-owner with Sullivan, said: "He [Grant] is a perfect fit. We
needed experience and stability. He is a footballing man and his reputation
speaks for itself. He has a great sense of humour and I am sure the players
will relate to him and the fans will warm to him." Grant is expected to
bring his own backroom staff to Upton Park and will meet his players when
they report back for pre-season training on July 5.

West Ham and Fulham set for transfer scrap over Portsmouth star
Published 22:45 03/06/10 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

Avram Grant is battling an attempt by Fulham to hijack West Ham's move for
striker Freddie Piquionne. The 31-year-old marksman's loan spell Portsmouth
is over, but he suffered a tough time at his parent club Lyon before
switching to the Premier League last summer and has no intention of going
back to France. He scored 11 goals in total for Pompey, including two
against Birmingham in the FA Cup quarter-final and another in the semi-final
to stun Spurs. Fulham boss Roy Hodgson has agreed a £2million deal with Lyon
for the striker. But Grant is keen to pair Piquionne with Everton striker
Yakubu, who has told friends he is ready to move to Upton Park after the
World Cup, subject to the two clubs agreeing a fee. One other striker on the
Hammers' shortlist is 20-year-old former Chelsea youngster Ben Sahar. The
Israeli international has three years left on his contract at Espanyol but
has hit just hit just one goal in over 20 games for the Spanish club. Grant
could yet keep England marksman Carlton Cole - to complete a quarter of
attacking options - with the Hammers insisting they will only sell if they
receive an offer that meets their staggering £15million valuation. Stoke and
Aston Villa remain interested.
The tug of war over Piquionne is among a number of deals Grant is trying to
pull off as he bids to revamp the West Ham squad. He is also said to be keen
on taking England keeper David James to east London on a free, with the club
ready to listen for offers for Robert Green. And he is also bidding to
rescue midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng from Championship football next
season. The club could also revisit a move for the highly-rated West Brom
midfielder Graham Dorrans, having already had a bid of £4million turned
down.

Avram Grant chasing back-up team from Portsmouth as West Ham rebuilding
process begins
Daily Mail

Avram Grant's first task as West Ham manager will be to raid the coaching
staff of his former club Portsmouth. The 55-year-old agreed a four-year
deal to take over at Upton Park yesterday and will officially start once a
work permit has been processed. There had been suggestions the Israeli
would team up again with his former Chelsea No 2 Steve Clarke, who remained
at West Ham after Gianfranco Zola left last month. However, Clarke is
understood to be close to agreeing a severance package on his
£1.2million-a-year contract and won't hang around for an opportunity to
renew the partnership that took Chelsea to the Champions League final in
2008. Grant is set to target former Portsmouth assistants Paul Groves and
Ian Woan as part of a new backroom team, although first-team coach Kevin
Keen is expected to stay on in some capacity. Grant arrives in east London
having overcome the odds to steer Portsmouth into last month's FA Cup final,
where the fairytale ended with defeat by Chelsea. Working amid horrendous
financial constraints, he inspired a club who had been placed into
administration to punch well above their weight and won admiration inside
and outside of Fratton Park as a result.
His defiance of Championship-bound Portsmouth's dire situation and success
on the pitch earned him the adoration of Pompey supporters and saw his stock
as a Premier
League manager soar.
Grant said: 'I'm proud and honoured to be the manager of West Ham. It's an
exciting challenge and I'm ready to do my best. West Ham are a fantastic
club with great fans and a history respected around the world. I'm looking
forward to getting to work with my players in July and preparing for the new
season.' West Ham co-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold described
Grant's appointment as the 'beginning of a new era'. Gold said: 'I have to
say that, having met Avram and spent some time with him, we have got our
man. He is a perfect fit. We needed experience and stability. He's a
footballing man and, quite frankly, his reputation speaks for itself. 'He

Sullivan added: 'We have taken our time over this appointment and are

Who is Avram Grant?

Avram Grant was appointed as West Ham United's 13th full time manager
earlier today. Join KUMB.com as we take a look back at his career to date...

Avram Grant's coaching career began just as many players were starting
theirs - at the tender age of only 18, when he took a job teaching the
youngsters at his home town club Hapoel Petah Tikva on a part-time basis
back in 1972.

Having spent 14 years in the role he was eventually promoted to first team
coach with Tikva, where he proved to be an immediate success. A Toto Cup win
- the Israeli equivalent of the Carling Cup - saw the national press sit up
and take note of the rising young star.

However Grant suffered the first of many of a series of last-gasp
disappointments when he saw his Tikva team narrowly pipped to what would
have been their first ever Israeli championship in 1991 - three days before
they were beaten 3-1 in the Israeli State Cup final by Maccabi Haifa.

Having taken Tikva as far as he felt he could Grant made the bold move of
leaving his home town club after nearly 20 years' service to join Maccabi
Tel Aviv, one of Israel's largest clubs. The move proved to be instantly
successful as Grant led Tel Aviv to the Israeli title for the first time
since 1979, beating their closest rivals by a massive 13 points (and
finishing runners-up in the Israeli Cup).

Grant's four-year spell at Tel Aviv proved to be a massive success, helped
by the club being bankrolled by a wealthy group of businessmen under the
MOFET banner. During this period he worked alongside some of the country's
most famous footballers including strikers Eli Driks and the legendary Avi
Nimni, the club's greatest ever goalscorer.

The league success the year before sent Tel Aviv into the freshly-introduced
Champions League for the first time in their history in 1992/93. Having
beaten Maltese champions FA Valetta in the first knockout phase they were
ousted from the competition by Club Brugge 4-0 on aggregate - a decent
performance against a side literally leagues above them. It was to be some
years before Grant was to eventually make his mark on the competition.

Further success followed at Tel Aviv where Grant helped the club take the
State Cup in 1993/94 and then the league title for the second time. However
a second crack at the Champions League would have to wait as Grant accepted
a job offer from Hapoel Haifa - a job which he was to remain in for less
than a year before returning to Tel Aviv.

Introuduced to Haifa by notorious businessman Ruby Shapira, it was a move
destined to failure. A club on the up and looking for their first elusive
championship, Haifa - who included a young Eyal Berkovic - weren't prepared
to give the new man time to settle and after a difficult season in which
they finished fourth, Grant was on the road again.

A further four years with Tel Aviv followed although the manager failed to
repeat the success of his earlier spell at the club, managing just a single
Toto Cup win in 1988/99. A second stab at the Champions League in 1996/97
saw the club fail to make it past the final qualification round, going out
this time - albeit narrowly - to Fenerbache.

With his job made tougher by the fact that his predecessor had left having
won the double, something that Grant was unable to emulate, the club's
supporters began to grow increasingly frustrated and were partly responsible
for his second exit from Tel Aviv in 2000. With the club having gone from a
Championship-winning side to a mid-table club, not many Tel Aviv fans were
sad to see the back of the manager this time around.

Undeterred by the first major setback of his managerial career, Grant took
the vacant post at Maccabi Haifa - where his two years proved to be an
unprecedented success. Two successive league titles instantly followed - as
did another Toto Cup win (in 2002).

His next sojourn into European competition saw Grant take Haifa into the
first round proper of the UEFA Cup (beaten 4-2 on aggregate by VItesse) and
also the Champions League where they became the first Israeli club to reach
the competition's group stages in 2002/03 - but only after they had been
kicked out of the competition the year before for fielding an ineligible
player (Walid Badir) against Haka of Finland, who they had beaten 5-0 on
aggregate.

Placed alongside Bayer Leverkusen, Olympiakos and Manchester United in
02/03, the Israeli's were given little chance of progressing. However
stunning home wins over Olympiakos and Manchester United (both 3-0) -
combined with a draw in Greece - saw Haifa finish a respectable third in the
group which saw them through to the UEFA Cup - where they were hammered 8-1
on aggregate by Athens in the third round.

Impressed by the way he had turned around Maccabi Haifa's fortunes, the
Israeli FA offered Grant the opportunity to succeed the outgoing Richard
Moller Nielsen in 2002. Having become his nation's youngest-ever coach at
the age of 45, Grant's side fared well in the 2004 European Championships
qualifiers, finishing third behind France and Slovakia.

Two years later they went one better and narrowly missed out on qualifying
for the 2006 World Cup Finals, finishing third in their qualifying group
behind France and Switzerland (on goal difference) - despite going through
the entire qualifying campaign undefeated (four wins and six draws).

After three years in the post Grant announced that he would be leaving his
position at the end of his four-year contract in 2006, shortly before
confirming that he would be moving to England to take up the post of
Director of Football with Premier League Portsmouth. During his spell on the
South Coast he worked alongside former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp before a
shock move by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, a personal friend of Grant's,
saw the Israeli land the post of successor to the hugely-popular Jose
Mourinho.

The move thrust the previously unknown Grant into the public spotlight. The
first Israeli to manage in the Premier League, Grant took to his new role
like a natural - although it took some time to placate Chelsea fans
disappointed at the departure of Mourinho (anti-Semitic hate mail received
during this period is thought to have been the responsibility of Blues
supporters). Criticism aimed at Grant suggested that he was lacking in
relevant experience, or that his tactical philosophy centred on the
defensive and unadventurous.

Undaunted, Grant led his new club to an opening day defeat against Man Utd
before taking the team on a 16-game unbeaten run. Just three months into his
spell at Stamford Bridge he was offered a four-year deal by Abramovich,
which he promptly signed.

He further made his mark on the side by signing players such as Nicolas
Anelka and Branislav Ivanovic in the January transfer window before leading
the club to a Carling Cup Final defeat against Tottenham and a memorable
penalty shootout defeat in the Champions League Final aganst Manchester
United. He remains the only Chelsea manager to take the team to the final of
Europe's premier club competition.

A third runners-up spot was confirmed when Chelsea finished second to
Manchester United in the Premier League. But only three days after the
Champions League final, Chelsea confirmed via their website that they had
terminated the manager's contract, with Grant having refused the offer of a
Director of Football role at the club. He left having not lost a single home
game during his tenure.

After a year or so out of the game - his longest spell out of work since
entering the sport as a youth coach at the tender age of 18 - Grant was
hired by crisis club Portsmouth in November 2009 to replace the outgoing
Paul Hart. Although he failed to save Pompey's Premier League status he
somehow managed to lead a team of cast-offs and second-rate players to the
FA Cup final, having memorably beaten Tottenham in the semi-final.

Six months later he resigned from his post at Portsmouth, calling the
decision to leave 'the hardest he has ever had to make'. Rumours that he was
on his way to West Ham were rife, but it took another fortnight before his
arrival in east London was finally confirmed.

One of the few benefits of having your contract terminated is that you can
be on the ball with exciting developments at Upton Park. So it is that
within minutes of Messrs Gold and Sullivan opening the door this morning I
can confirm that Avram Grant has been offered a four-year contract to take
over the manager's hot seat at West Ham.

In a secret that hardly was, Grant joins the club fresh from leading
Portsmouth to the FA Cup final and replaces former Chelsea favourite
Gianfranco Zola, who was sacked at the end of the season. It will be
interesting to see if Grant suffers the same anti-Blue backlash that Zola
did.

In a statement Grant was quoted as saying: "I am proud and honoured to be
the manager of West Ham. It will be an exciting challenge and I am ready to
do my best'' "This is a fantastic club with great fans and a history that is
respected around the world. I am already looking forward to getting to work
with my players in July and preparing for the new season."

Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold both welcomed Grant with Sullivan
inevitably providing the rent-a-quotes:

"I am delighted to welcome Avram to West Ham and am confident he will prove
a success,'' said Sullivan. 'We have taken our time over this appointment
and are certain we have got the right man.

"We are all looking forward to next season with new players coming in and
Avram's arrival is just the latest reason for real optimism."

Gold added: "I have to say that having met Avram and spent some time with
him that we have got our man. He is a perfect fit.

"We needed experience and stability. He is a footballing man and quite
frankly his reputation speaks for itself. He has a great sense of humour and
I am sure the players will relate to him and the fans will warm to him."

Well, I wanted someone with good experience of both Premiership and European
football - not that Av need concern himself with that for a good few years -
and I suppose Grant fits the bill. It will be interesting to see how he
works with the squad and I'm not expecting another relegation battle next
year so I wish the man well and look forward to seeing Babka and Hummus
added to the menu at the Martin Peters Tea Bar.

West Ham United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Avram Grant as
manager on a four-year contract, subject to being granted a work permit.
Grant will join the club fresh from leading Portsmouth to the FA Cup final
and has a wealth of domestic, European and international experience. His
most notable achievement in the game was to take Chelsea to the 2007/08 UEFA
Champions League final, where only a missed penalty in the shoot-out denied
him the trophy. Ahead of being officially unveiled later this month, Grant
said: "I am proud and honoured to be the manager of West Ham. It will be an

with great fans and a history that is respected around the world. I am
already looking forward to getting to work with my players in July and

He has been welcomed to the club by the chairmen, with all looking forward
to a busy summer and 2010/11 season ahead - the "beginning of a new era at
West Ham United".
David Sullivan said: "I am delighted to welcome Avram to West Ham and am

Avram Grant confirmed as West Ham boss
BBC.co.uk

West Ham have appointed Avram Grant as the club's new manager on a four-year
contract, subject to a work permit. Grant, 55, succeeds Gianfranco Zola who
was sacked after the Hammers finished 17th in the Premier League. The
Israeli led Portsmouth to this season's FA Cup final, where they were beaten
1-0 by Chelsea. He has also spent one season in charge at Chelsea, guiding
them to the 2008 Champions League final, where they lost on penalties to
Manchester United. Speaking on Wednesday, before the appointment was
confirmed, West Ham co-chairman David Gold told BBC Sport: "After an hour,
we knew we could work with this manager. We are very optimistic. "I think
it's time for the football club to get some stability with people that have
been there, done that and got the T-shirt. "The bottom line is the
relationship between the manager and the chairman is critical. In our case
it's two chairmen so it's even more difficult as you need to have a
relationship between three people."
West Ham's owners want Grant to improve a squad which finished in 17th
position in the Premier League, one place above the relegation zone, with 35
points from 38 matches.
"We can't put our fans through that again. We want to put together a team
that was better than last year," said Gold. "We were very fortunate.
Normally 35 points gets you relegated. "What we need is a manager who has
achieved, has experience. We are not in a position where we can take on
young, inexperienced managers."
Gold said he hoped the appointment, subject to the relative formality of
Grant being granted a work permit, would herald a new era for West Ham,
which includes a possible move to the new Olympic Stadium in east London
after the 2012 Games. "The vibes from the politicians are this is the
perfect fit," said Gold of the potential for the Hammers to relocate from
the Boleyn Ground to Stratford. "What changed all this was spending a day at
the stadium at the beginning of May. "Let me tell you not many people have
seen what we have seen. This stadium is going to be as iconic, in my view,
as Wembley Stadium."
Grant is likely to bring in his own support team, and Zola's assistant Steve
Clarke - who worked with the Israeli at Chelsea - is not expected to have a
role at Upton Park.
West Ham had finished ninth under Zola in the 2008-09 campaign but struggled
last season with off-pitch turmoil and a prolonged takeover battle. "We did
ask Franco to keep us up and he did that, but I think we need to move on
from that. New owners like to choose their own people," said Gold. Gold and
Sullivan said the club had £110m debts when they took over in January. The
pair - together with Karren Brady - had previously been in charge for 16
years at Birmingham City where Barry Fry, Trevor Francis, Steve Bruce and
Alex McLeish were their managerial appointments. "We are over the worst at
West Ham, we've found most of the skeletons in the cupboard and are looking
forward to a bright, exciting future," said former Hammers youth player
Gold.

2009-10 Director of football, then manager, Portsmouth

"There are still many problems and most of all is the debt at the football
club. "We believe it is a great club and we can turn this round." He added:
"I've been 17 years in football and I know the critical thing in any
football club are the principles and the manager. "We got it right with
Steve Bruce. We got it right with Alex McLeish. "Like all managers, our new
manager will bring his own people in, and we are comfortable with that."
Grant may well turn to his former club Portsmouth for recruits after their
relegation to the Championship following a season which saw the club docked
nine points for going into administration. The current West Ham squad boasts
goalkeeper Robert Green, centre-half Matthew Upson, midfielder Scott Parker
and striker Carlton Cole as players who have been capped by England. Several
younger players, such as defender James Tomkins, midfielders Mark Noble and
Jack Collison and strikers Junior Stanislas and Zavon Hines, have progressed
from the club's famed academy. Given the club's debts, Grant is seen as a
perfect candidate for operating in the transfer market with a limited
budget. He is unlikely to be handed a huge transfer kitty, but will be
eyeing moves both in and out of Upton Park, with the squad due to report
back for pre-season training on 5 July. West Ham have narrowly escaped
relegation twice in the last four seasons, and the new owners are hoping for
a more stable period. "I've been a fan for as long as I can remember and
still am, and we fans are very demanding," said Gold. Gold and Sullivan
announced last month they were increasing their holding in the club from 50%
to 60% with an injection of £4m each. "We've added another £8m which shows
our integrity and intent. We've got to rebuild the club and its
infrastructure," said Gold. "What fans have to do is trust their principles
and trust their chairmen. These chairmen put their money where their mouths
are."

Grant arrived as Portsmouth's director of football in October 2009 but
replaced Paul Hart as manager the following month, with the club bottom of
the league with just seven points from 13 games. Crippled by financial
problems, the club went into administration in February and were
subsequently deducted nine points by the Premier League. They went on to
finish bottom of the table on 19 points but reached the FA Cup final, losing
the Wembley showpiece 1-0 to Grant's former club Chelsea. He won 10, lost 16
and drew seven of his 33 matches in charge. Grant announced his decision to
leave the beaten FA Cup finalists in an open letter to fans. "This was one
of the most difficult decisions I've had to take in my football career," he
said. "I will never forget you, the loyal fans of Pompey, who, without a
doubt, helped me protect the team under such complex circumstances," he
said.

experience and stability. He is a footballing man and quite frankly his
reputation speaks for itself. He has a great sense of humour and I am sure
the players will relate to him and the fans will warm to him." We'll have
more reaction to Grant's appointment throughout the day.

Grant named Hammers boss
Former Pompey and Chelsea manager handed four-year deal
By Rob Parrish Last updated: 3rd June 2010
SSN

Avram Grant has been confirmed as the new manager of West Ham and has agreed
a four-year deal with the Upton Park club, subject to a work permit. The
former Portsmouth and Chelsea manager emerged as the hot favourite to take
charge of the East London club following Gianfranco Zola's departure at the
end of the season. Hammers co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan put
together a four-man shortlist for the role, which also included Blackburn
boss Sam Allardyce, Cardiff manager Dave Jones and Blackpool's Ian Holloway.
But Israeli Grant was always the stand-out candidate and took a significant
step closer to the job when he parted company with Pompey late last month.
The 57-year-old earned praise from all quarters as he guided the stricken
South Coast club to the FA Cup final, where they were narrowly beaten by
Chelsea, but was unable to prevent relegation to the Championship following
a nine-point deduction for going into administration. He inherits a West Ham
side which only narrowly avoided the drop last season, a miserable campaign
which cost Zola his job following a number of very public spats with
Sullivan and Gold.
Grant told the club's official website: "I am proud and honoured to be the
manager of West Ham. It will be an exciting challenge and I am ready to do
my best. "This is a fantastic club with great fans and a history that is
respected around the world. I am already looking forward to getting to work
with my players in July and preparing for the new season."
Co-owners Gold and Sullivan were united in their praise for a man they hope
will help guide the Hammers to success in the new season and beyond. Gold
said: "I have to say that having met Avram and spent some time with him that
we have got our man. He is a perfect fit. "We needed experience and
stability. He is a footballing man and quite frankly his reputation speaks
for itself. He has a great sense of humour and I am sure the players will
relate to him and the fans will warm to him." And Sullivan added: "I am
delighted to welcome Avram to West Ham and am confident he will prove a
success. We have taken our time over this appointment and are certain we
have got the right man.
"We are all looking forward to next season with new players coming in and
Avram's arrival is just the latest reason for real optimism."

GRANT CONFIRMED AS WEST HAM MANAGER
LMA

Avram Grant has been appointed as the new manager of West Ham United. A
statement on the club website read; West Ham United are delighted to confirm
the appointment of Avram Grant as manager on a four-year contract, subject
to being granted a work permit. "Ahead of being officially unveiled later
this month, Grant said: "I am proud and honoured to be the manager of West
Ham. It will be an exciting challenge and I am ready to do my best. "This is
a fantastic club with great fans and a history that is respected around the
world. I am already looking forward to getting to work with my players in
July and preparing for the new season." He has been welcomed to the club by
the chairmen, with all looking forward to a busy summer and 2010/11 season
ahead - the "beginning of a new era at West Ham United".

Grant is the New Manager: Confirmed
West Ham Till I Die

West Ham have confirmed the signing of Avram Grant as manager on a four year
contract. It's said to be worth £4 million with a substantial pay on results
element. Grant will not be able to start work until his work permit comes
through, but that is thought to be a formality. There's no doubting Avram
Grant's pedigree, but I have to admit I have some reservations about his
qualification to manage a team like West Ham. He's incredibly dour and I
think it will take him some time to establish a rapport with the fans. We
like managers who are ebullient and wear their hearts on their sleeves.
Grant is the polar opposite of that. But the main thing is that he must be
allowed to do something which Gianfranco Zola never had the opportunity to
do – build his own team. I suspect we will see a lot of comings and goings
over the next few weeks.

Scott Parker was the man of the 2009/10 campaign and you can relive all of
his heroic highs on DVD
03.06.2010

West Ham United fans can get their hands on the 2009/10 season DVD in store
and online today Priced at £13, the DVD will exclusively available at the
club's Stadium and Lakeside stores or from the whufc.com Megastore until
Sunday 13 June. With every victory and every goal covered, it is the
definitive story of the Hammers season.

Scott Parker's stunning form stood out in a 2009/10 campaign that proved
tough in many ways for West Ham United. Ultimately, however, the Hammers
overcame the challenges that were laid in front of them and, with new
chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold at the helm, ensured their Barclays
Premier League survival.

On the pitch, the talismanic Parker, whose fantastic goal in the 3-2 home
victory over Wigan Athletic all but assured the club's top-flight future,
led the way. While the lows may have outweighed the highs, the form of
Robert Green and Carlton Cole, the continued emergence of youngsters like
Zavon Hines and Junior Stanislas and long-term financial stability all point
to a better, brighter future for West Ham United.

Hammers flying the flag
WHUFC.com
England will have strong West Ham United representation, much to the delight
of the club chairman
03.06.2010

Robert Green and Matthew Upson were touching down in South Africa on
Thursday with the best FIFA World Cup wishes of West Ham United fans
everywhere. The duo were a proud part of Fabio Capello's 23-man squad that
left Heathrow Airport aboard a Virgin plane bound for Johannesburg on
Wednesday night. Upon landing, the delegation were heading off to the Three
Lions' base in Rustenburg. The city will also be the venue for England's
opening Group C match against the United States on Saturday week.

West Ham United chairman David Gold led the messages of support for the
Hammers duo, who have featured regularly under Capello in qualifying. "I am
thrilled for Robert and Matthew," he said. "They are two great ambassadors
for the club in the true West Ham spirit and indeed for England. They are
proper gentlemen and conduct themselves well on and off the pitch."

While eight others in Capello's squad have West Ham connections - captain
Rio Ferdinand, David James, Glen Johnson, John Terry, Michael Carrick, Frank
Lampard, Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe - the chairman was disappointed that
Scott Parker and Carlton Cole both had to stay behind. "I am sorry for Scott
that he missed out in the end. I just wished we could have had three players
at the finals so that we could have emulated the 1966 ideal with Bobby
Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst lifting the trophy. "I can only say to
Scott that if I was the England manager I would have taken him. He should
take it as a positive that he got so close. We have seen him week in and
week out and we know what a player he is. They talk about players that turn
matches and Scott Parker is one of those players. "You could say the same
for Carlton as well. While I am disappointed for both of them, the upside is
that they will be stronger and more resilient to our new season which is
going to be very important. It is the beginning of a new era at West Ham
United."

Specs' case for the defence

Jonathan Spector insists the US will be prepared for Fabio Capello's England
come 12 June
03.06.2010

West Ham United defender Jonathan Spector insists the United States will be
ready for England come their FIFA World Cup Group C meeting in Rustenburg on
12 June. The Americans have come under scrutiny in some quarters in recent
months following a series of unconvincing displays in warm-up friendlies.
Bob Bradley's squad have been beaten by Honduras, the Netherlands and the
Czech Republic and failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the five matches
they have contested since the turn of the year, leading to criticism.
However, Spector, who did not play against Honduras or the Czechs, said he
and his fellow defenders would be working hard to put things right before
their meeting with England. "We'll be working in training as a unit. We'll
be watching video of the games to see where we went wrong, whether it be
positionally or individually," said Spector, speaking from the US team base
at the rural Irene Country Lodge in South Africa. "Diagrams, things like
that, all are extremely helpful, but I think it takes a little bit of time
just to get used to playing with one another again. "We all come from
different systems with our club teams and fortunately, you know, we've laid
the groundwork in the past for working together, but it does take a little
bit of time just to get adjusted and become kind of in synch with each
other. "It's not really a concern of ours. I know we're going to get there.
but as I said, it will take a little bit of time."

Spector has been handed the No2 shirt for this summer's World Cup, with his
major rival for the right-back berth, Steve Cherundolo, being allocated the
No6.

Shilton: 'Green should be England's No.1'

Peter Shilton is backing Rob Green to be England's best choice for South
Africa. Former Arsenal keeper David Seaman believes David James should be
No.1, but Green gets Shilton's vote as he has been more consistent, while he
believes James may still be vulnerable. The man who won 125 caps between the
sticks for England said: "David is the most naturally gifted keeper we've
probably ever produced. But we don't have someone who stands out a mile as
No.1. "But I look at Green and he hasn't done a lot wrong, to be honest.
He's been consistent and you feel you could trust him."

Hammers co-owner David Gold says: Within an hour of meeting Grant we knew we
could work with him
Published 23:00 02/06/10 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

AVRAM GRANT is expected to be appointed as West Ham's new boss today. The
Israeli will confirm one of the biggest open secrets in the Premier League
when he pens a four-year deal to become Gianfranco Zola's successor at Upton
Park. And his first task will be to persuade disillusioned skipper Scott
Parker his future lies at the club. Co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan
insist the midfielder is the only player they will not listen to offers for.
But a number of clubs, including Liverpool, are said to be keen on Parker,
who is despondent after being cut from Fabio Capello's World Cup squad
without playing a single minute of England's two warm-up games. Gold said
yesterday: "After an hour (of meeting Grant), we knew we could work with
this manager. We are very optimistic. "It's time for the football club to
get some stability with people that have been there, done that and got the
T-shirt. The relationship between the manager and the chairman is critical.
"In our case it's two chairmen so it's even more difficult."
Grant will be tasked with ensuring there is no repeat of the relegation
threat which made for such a dramatic campaign at the Hammers. Gold added:
"We can't put our fans through that again. We want to put together a team
that is better than last year. We were very fortunate. Normally 35 points
gets you relegated. "What we need is a manager who has achieved, has
experience. We are not in a position where we can take on young,
inexperienced managers."
A statement on the Hammers website said last night: "West Ham will make a
formal announcement of the club's new manager within 24 hours. 'The club
have been conducting a thorough recruitment programme and made excellent
progress. ''The squad are set to report back for pre-season training on July
5, meaning the new manager will have plenty of time to put together his
squad.'' Portugal winger Luis Boa Morte has been offered a new deal in a
shock U-turn by the club. He returned in April after nine months out with a
serious knee injury. But he had looked to be on the way out after
criticising the co-owners' in a TV interview. But Grant has requested he be
kept on. The club are releasing strikers Ilan and Mido.

A Player at the Crossroads?
West Ham Till I Die

It must be a massive personal disappointment for Benni McCarthy to be
excluded from the SA squad, playing in a WC Finals hosted in his homeland.
McCarthy is his country's top goal scorer and probably its greatest export
to European football. In his time at FC Porto he won titles and regularly
played in the Champions League, winning the competition in 2004 under the
management of Jose Mourinho.

It is a great pity that Alan Pardew's deal for McCarthy in 2005-06 broke
down. He would have been an ideal signing for the club. Instead, FC Porto
turned down a £6m fee, (their then manager claiming McCarthy was too good
to sign for us!), only to sell him, a season or so later, to mighty
Blackburn Rovers for a mere c.£2m. That was certainly a good bit of
business by the Portuguese club!!!!

Nevertheless, he went on to do well in the PL. When we finally signed him
last January it become clear that there was a legacy of poor fitness from a
lack of playing time in his final months at Blackburn. This was the
immediate issue that had to addressed by the coaching staff on his arrival
at the club. Unfortunately, as we all know, he came close to being the goal
scoring hero on his West Ham debut at Burnley, only to pick up a knee injury
later in the game. That injury, and the lengthy lay off that followed,
finished his season and set in train the course of events that ultimately
led to his exclusion from the WC Finals.

However, it will now be interesting to see how McCarthy responds to this set
back? I hope that he responds positively by training and shedding his
excess weight over the summer. When he returns to the club in July, he
needs to exhibit good initial levels of fitness. That way, he can push on
to achieve match fitness much sooner and then concentrate upon his form.

In that sense, he has probably reached a crossroads at the club. If he
takes the right road he can still go on to prove his worth. Even at 32,
McCarthy is a class act, who has excellent technique and finishing ability.
Next season he could provide a vastly experienced striking option, coming on
from the bench and pushing Carlton Cole for a starting spot. It has
recently been alleged that an issue with Cole's knees means that he could,
in future, be restricted to playing 30 matches or less per season. If
true, then there will be an even greater imperative to have effective,
alternative options up front .

McCarthy is also a player that our young strikers like Hines, Sears and
Nouble can learn from. After all, he is a striker that played
successfully in the Champions League for a number of years. Which of our
other current strikers can say as much?

As for the alternative road, we all know where that is likely to lead.
David Sullivan was quoted, in a recent newspaper article, criticising
McCarthy's Body Mass Index (BMI), so it is likely that he will be under
close scrutiny when he reports back fo pre-season training. The Co-Chairmen
are unlikely to want to continue paying c.£40,000 a week in wages to a
striker that cannot achieve full fitness! And really, who can blame them?

McCarthy now has a point to prove to the club and the supporters. He needs
to show that he is capable of making a positive contribution next season.
Yes, there will be initial skepticism from sections of the fans. He will
probably get the same kind of stick that Faubert and Boa Morte have both
received in their time. However, as in the case of Faubert and the
Portuguese Pele, the emphasis is upon McCarthy to win them over with his
commitment, performances and goals next season.

Elsewhere, it looks like Avram Grant's appointment as the new West Ham
manager will be confirmed later today. It will be interesting to learn
something of his immediate summer transfer plans and longer term ambitions
for the club.

I must admit to having reservations about the appointment. However, once in
post, it is only fair to give any new manager a chance. I wish Avram Grant
well, because we certainly need greater stability and much improved results
next season.

However, I do expect him to achieve that playing good football, whilst
continuing to develop youngsters such as Daprela, Tomkins, Spence,
Stanislas, Hines and Nouble. Is that expecting too much? Not at all. If
he is not yet aware how important these things are to Hammers supporters,
then rest assured, he soon will be!

SJ. Chandos.

Joe glad to be back
WHUFC.com
A chance to return to the Boleyn Ground was too good to miss for England
midfielder Joe Cole
02.06.2010

West Ham United fans can meet Tony Carr at the Stadium store from 1pm on
Thursday and pass on their best wishes for his testimonial year - just as
Joe Cole has done. The England midfielder - gearing up for the FIFA World
Cup after being named in Fabio Capello's final 23-man squad - was delighted
to be involved when the Academy Director staged his testimonial match last
month. Cole came all the way through the Hammers youth ranks to the first
team before progressing to full international honours. "Tony has been a
great coach and a big part of my upbringing in football, I don't think I
would be the player I am if it was not for Tony and the Academy staff I
worked with when I was here. "I really appreciate what I was given here at
West Ham and it is nice that so many of the lads came back and we were able
to say thanks to Tony like this."
Cole remains in close contact with Carr and keeps a keen interest in who
might be the next player off the production line. "He is still going, still
telling me about the young players he has now coming through. He's excited
about a few of them and he is waiting for the next lot to come through as
well now." Although unable to play in the match back on 5 May because of
club commitments with Chelsea, Cole was grateful for the welcome he received
from the Hammers faithful. "I can't thank the West Ham fans enough for the
reaction they gave us. All of us who have come back were delighted about
that. It is nice to appreciate what the club have done for me and also the
fans appreciate what I done for the club. I am very happy at that." "I have
only all good memories of my time here, no bad at all. It was great winning
the FA Youth Cup here, making my debut for the first team and playing with
some great players like Paolo. "It was great to see him and be on the pitch
with him again. He's still the same, still wants to do everything and is as
energetic as ever out there. It was a cracking night."

Green gives back

Robert Green was the guest of honour at the Norfolk FA's new Football
Development Centre
02.06.2010

Robert Green took time out from packing his kit for the 2010 FIFA World Cup
to open the Norfolk FA's new Football Development Centre. The West Ham
United and England goalkeeper has strong ties to the county, coming through
the ranks at Norwich City before going on to make 241 first-team appearances
for the Canaries. Green spent four years with the club's Academy between
1992 and 1996 before making his debut in an East Anglian derby with Ipswich
Town at the age of just 19 in April 1999. During his time at Norwich, Green
was capped by England at Under-16, U18, B and senior level, making his full
debut against Colombia in May 2005. Since joining the Hammers in August
2006, the 30-year-old has made a further 152 first-team appearances and
become England's No1 goalkeeper, earning ten caps in total. After unveiling
a special plaque to mark the centre's opening, Green met aspiring local
young footballers before speaking to members of the media about his
impending inclusion in England's World Cup squad, as well as the Three
Lions' chances of success in South Africa. "This facility can encourage
people and can really help promote football within the community," said
Green. "It will encourage kids to play football and help Norfolk and Norwich
in both a football sense and a community sense."
The centre, situated in the Norwich suburb of Bowthorpe, boasts eight
small-sided pitches and one larger arena, all of which are fully floodlit
and possess state-of-the-art third-generation surfaces. The Norfolk FA hope
the facility will encourage youngsters to become involved in grassroots
football. City College Norwich will also use the centre as the base for a
host of sports-related courses, including NVQs in Sport, Recreation and
Allied Occupations and the BTEC Nationa l Diploma in Sport and Exercise
Science.

Academy awe for Anton
WHUFC.com
A high-profile graduate of the youth system, Anton Ferdinand is eager to see
who is coming through
02.06.2010

Anton Ferdinand has revealed he is not surprised at all that Tony Carr
continues to churn out homegrown Hammers from the Academy. The Sunderland
defender is one of the most high-profile graduates in recent seasons and was
delighted to return to the Boleyn Ground for his mentor's recent
testimonial. Ferdinand has kept in touch with Carr and said West Ham United
fans can look forward to many more starlets coming through. "He is still
bringing players through today. There are a few in the first team here again
at West Ham. A lot of those players are below the age of 23 and even more
are coming through from the Academy. The fact that this is still happening
here doesn't surprise me.
"Tony has not only made this club money, but brought through talent for the
country, for England. A lot of the credit goes to not only Tony but the
people in the Academy around him as well. It just goes to show the respect
and the love the players have for him, to come back and be at his game."
Ferdinand was thrilled to wear a West Ham shirt again and was more than
nostalgic about the experience. "Just coming back and walking into the home
dressing room again was so good and brought back great memories for me.
These are memories I will treasure forever." In particular, he will treasure
the chance to play alongside big brother Rio, with the defensive duo finally
realising a lifelong dream. "It was the first time I have played alongside
him. There was not so much banter, but a lot of talking out there between
us. Like we would in a game, it would be even greater if it was a proper
competitive match, but it was the next best thing. It was good to play with
him and our family was very proud. "It was nice to play for the fans. I got
a good reception when I have come back here with Sunderland so I was hoping
that it would be the same again for me wearing the claret and blue again. It
was and I was very happy at that."

Lee looks forward for Parker
WHUFC.com
Robert Lee said Scott Parker still has a chance of establishing himself with
England in future
02.06.2010

Robert Lee has backed Scott Parker to bounce back from the disappointment of
missing out on the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad. The two-times Hammer of the
Year was one of seven players left out of the final 23-man selection after
being named in the provisional squad. Former West Ham United midfielder Lee,
who played at the 1998 finals, said he was not surprised at Parker's
exclusion, especially after Gareth Barry proved his fitness to the England
manager. "He [Fabio Capello] felt Gareth Barry was worth waiting for," said
Lee. "He has done very well for Capello and he rates him very highly. I am
not surprised about Scott as he came in very late. He is only in his late
20s, though, and still has a chance with England "He did marvellously [this
season] for West Ham. He single-handedly kept them in the Premier League and
the fans would agree with that. He was a very late admission and the fact he
didn't play in the last two warm-up games meant the writing was on the wall
for him."
Lee, who scored twice in 21 appearances for his country and played for his
beloved Hammers in the 2003/04 campaign, was also delighted to see Academy
graduate Joe Cole make the cut. However, he felt the tricky midfielder was
always going to be on the plane. "I don't think there was any doubt about
Joe Cole going. He is a fantastic player.
"He has done very well at the end of the season. He always does well for
England. In these sorts of tournaments you need players who can beat players
and Joe Cole is someone who can do that. It is a very well balanced squad
and I think we have a great chance."

Avram Grant expected to be new West Ham boss
BBC.co.uk
By Frank Keogh

Former Portsmouth and Chelsea manager Avram Grant is set to be named as the
new West Ham boss on Thursday. Grant, who quit Pompey on 21 May, is
returning from holiday on Wednesday and Hammers officials have indicated he
is on the verge of signing a contract. The 55-year-old Israeli is thought
to have met the criteria laid down by co-chairmen David Sullivan and David
Gold. "After an hour, we knew we could work with this manager. We are very
optimistic," Gold told BBC Sport. "I think it's time for the football club
to get some stability with people that have been there, done that and got
the T-shirt. "The bottom line is the relationship between the manager and
the chairman is critical. In our case it's two chairmen so it's even more
difficult as you need to have a relationship between three people."
Grant, who took Chelsea to a Champions League final and Portsmouth to the FA
Cup final, will fill the position left vacant following the sacking of
Gianfranco Zola. West Ham's owners want Grant to improve a squad which
finished in 17th position in the Premier League, one place above the
relegation zone, with 35 points from 38 matches. "We can't put our fans
through that again. We want to put together a team that was better than last
year," said Gold. "We were very fortunate. Normally 35 points gets you
relegated.
"What we need is a manager who has achieved, has experience. We are not in a
position where we can take on young, inexperienced managers."
West Ham had finished ninth under Zola in the 2008-09
campaign but struggled last season with off-pitch turmoil and a prolonged
takeover battle. "We did ask Franco to keep us up and he did that, but I
think we need to move on from that. New owners like to choose their own
people," said Gold. Gold and Sullivan said the club had £110m debts when
they took over in January. The pair - together with Karren Brady - had
previously been in charge for 16 years at Birmingham City where Barry Fry,
Trevor Francis, Steve Bruce and Alex McLeish were their managerial
appointments. "We are over the worst at West Ham, we've found most of the
skeletons in the cupboard and are looking forward to a bright, exciting
future," said former Hammers youth player Gold.

AVRAM GRANT FACTFILE
1986-2002: Managed Hapoel Petah Tikva, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Haifa and
Maccabi Haifa in Israel
2002-06 Israel national manager
2006 Director of football, Portsmouth
2007-08 Director of football, then manager, Chelsea

"This was one
of the most difficult decisions I've had to take in my football career," he
said. "I will never forget you, the loyal fans of Pompey, who, without a
doubt, helped me protect the team under such complex circumstances," he
said.

about the team in a TV interview. Brazilian Ilan, 29, and Egyptian Mido, 27,
were signed in January and join Mexico striker Guillermo Franco as surplus
to requirements at Upton Park. Avram Grant is expected to take over as West
Ham manager on Thursday. Franco, Mido and Ilan all joined the club when
Gianfranco Zola, who was sacked in May, was in charge. Boa Morte scored for
the Hammers in their last Premier League match when they drew 1-1 with
Manchester City. It was his second goal in 80 apperances for West Ham since
he was signed by Alan Curbishley for £5m in January 2007.

Gold on Grant: stability is key

David Gold says Avram Grant is the man to bring 'stability' back to the
Boleyn Ground. Gold, speaking this morning ahead of tomorrow's unveiling of
the 13th full-time West Ham United manager confirmed that Grant would indeed
be the man to replace Gianfranco Zola - who was fired last month - adding
that he knew immediately that the former Portsmouth boss would be the right
man for the job. "It's time for the football club to get some stability with
people that have been there, done that and got the T-shirt," said Gold.
"After an hour, we knew we could work with this manager. We are very
optimistic. "The bottom line is the relationship between the manager and
the chairman is critical. In our case it's two chairmen so it's even more
difficult as you need to have a relationship between three people."
Referring to the difficulties of last season, Gold added that there could be
no repeat of the 17th placed-finish that saw the Irons narrowly avoid
relegation. "We can't put our fans through that again. We want to put
together a team that was better than last year," he said. "We were very
fortunate. Normally 35 points gets you relegated. "What we need is a
manager who has achieved, has experience. We are not in a positon where we
can take on young, inexperienced managers," he added, before confirming what
a number of supporters had suspected since the day Gold and partner David
Sullivan entered the Boleyn Ground. "We did ask Franco to keep us up and he
did that, but I think we need to move on from that. New owners like to
choose their own people."

Luis Boa Morte has been offered a new one-year deal, it has been confirmed.
The Portuguese winger - who fell foul of his employers last month after he
launched a scathing attack on David Sullivan following the 1-1 draw with
Manchester City - has somewhat surprisingly been offered the contract
extention, despite having prevously been told that his future lay elsewhere.
However it is unlikely to be on the same terms as those previously offered
when he became Alan Curbishley's first signing when moving from Fulham for
£5million in 2007. New contracts have also been offered to Academy
youngsters Anthony Edgar, Jordan Spence, Matthew Fry and Olly Lee - the son
of former Hammer Rob Lee.
Going the other way this summer, and now confirmed as definite departures
are veteran striker Guille Franco - who scored for Mexico against England in
the recent Wembley friendly - plus both Mido and Ilan, who are being
released after just four months with the club.

Summer Ins and Outs

Extended pro contracts: Luis Boa Morte; Anthony Edgar; Jordan Spence;
Matthew Fry; Olly Lee.
New pro contracts: Jordan Brown; Callum McNaughton; Cristian Montano.
Released pros: Guille Franco; Ilan; Mido; Josh Payne; Tony Brookes; Daniel
Kearns; Jack Lampe; Bondz N'Gala (now at Plymouth).
End of loan: Davide Ferrari (Brescia).
Released Academy: Peter Loveday; Nicky Barrett; Conor Okus.

A disappointed Benni McCarthy has been speaking about his omission from
South Africa's World Cup squad. The recently-signed Hammers striker - the
African's all-time leading goal scorer - was told at the weekend that he was
out of the Bafana Bafana squad having failed to show any improvement to his
fitness. "The final squad is a tough call for any coach to make and I am
sure it was not made without heartache. My fitness level came into question
after weeks recovering from my knee injury but the coach still believed in
me, as did I and the rest of the team, and I am grateful for that," he said.
"No one's place in the final squad is a given. We all gave it our best and
pushed ourselves to our limits to make the cut. In the end it comes down to
a head count. I am proud to have been given the privilege to have been
capped in the South African national squad; unfortunately this time it was
not to be. "I did not fail - I just didn't make the final 23; I am still a
part of the team, if not the squad. We have a strong team everyone will be
proud of and I am in no doubt we will make our mark with the groundswell of
support the team has been receiving of late. If the carnival spirit of the
Super 14 rugby is a measure of the united support we are to expect for
Bafana, then I see us excelling. My role now is to join in that support."
McCarthy joined West Ham in the January transfer window in a £2million
switch from Blackburn. But his short spell in east London has thus far
proved to be a spectacular failure, with the 32-year-old making just two
starts since moving south and suffering jibes from supporters due to the
excessive weight he is carrying.

Green disappointed by departure
KUMB.com

By: Staff Writer

Robert Green has called the sacking of Gianfranco Zola 'disappointing'. The
England goalkeeper, who is expected by many to get the nod over David James
and Joe Hart as number one for this summer's World Cup Finals was Zola's
number one during his entire spell as manager - and it is a working
relationship that Green will sadly miss. Talking to the BBC ahead of
joining up with his international team mates as they begin preparation for
the tournament, Green said: "I spoke to him just after he left. I was
obviously disappointed for him because's he's been a tremendous manager and
a tremendous man in difficult times. "It wasn't particularly a great
surprise but it was disappointing. He worked so hard for the club's cause in
difficult circumstances. You look at the squad being decimated by sales and
injuries and having a tough season and you look at what previous manager's
have had to spend in recent years and the success they've bought as opposed
to who he's had to sell. "So in that respect it's difficult for him but
people make their decisions. The new owners have come in and made their
decision and that's it. You get on with it and I'm sure that whoever comes
in is going to be a great success."
Green, who is expected to start for England when their World Cup campaign
kicks off against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12th admitted that
he was as in the dark as anyone else with regards to who will get the nod -
but also flattered by comments from former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton,
who has backed the West Ham number one to get the shirt. "To get the support
of a living legend is a wonderful thing and I'm obviously delighted," he
said. "Hopefully his thoughts and sentiments are repeated by the manger;
we'll see."

Ilan and Mido get Hammer blow
Strikers to depart Upton Park as retained list announced

West Ham striking duo Ilan and Mido are to leave the club, but Luis Boa
Morte is set to stay on. The Hammers announced which players are staying
and going following the release of the retained list on Tuesday, ahead of
the imminent appointment of their new boss. While it is no surprise Mido
will be moving on after failing to score in nine appearances since his loan
switch from Middlesbrough in January, Brazilian Ilan did make an impact,
netting four times in 11 games, including crucial goals against Everton,
Sunderland and Wigan as the Hammers just stayed up. In other departures from
the club, fellow striker Guillermo Franco had already revealed he will be
released by West Ham when his contract expires in June, while Bondz N'Gala
has joined Plymouth Argyle permanently. Midfielder Josh Payne is also
leaving, Davide Ferrari's loan from Brescia Calcio has expired and young
trio Peter Loveday, Nicky Barrett and Conor Okus have all been released.
But midfielder Luis Boa Morte, whose existing deal expires on 30th June, has
been offered a new deal following his successful comeback from a long-term
knee injury. Youngsters Anthony Edgar, Jordan Spence, Matthew Fry and Oliver
Lee have also been offered new deals, while first professional contracts
have been offered to left-back Jordan Brown, centre-back Callum McNaughton
and forward Cristian Montano.

Grant set for Hammers role

Sky Sports News understands Avram Grant will be named as West Ham boss on
Thursday subject to a work permit. The Premier League strugglers have been
heavily linked with the former Portsmouth boss since parting company with
Gianfranco Zola last month. Their search for a boss is now set to reach
fruition, with the Upton Park outfit confirming on Wednesday they will
announce their new coach imminently. In a statement on their official
website, the club said: "West Ham United will make a formal announcement of
the club's new manager within the next 24 hours. "The club have been
conducting a thorough recruitment programme in recent weeks and made
excellent progress after considering a number of candidates. "The squad are
set to report back for pre-season training on Monday 5 July, meaning the new
manager will have plenty of time to put together his squad for the 2010/11
campaign. "With the aim to build on the proven international talent in the
ranks and exciting youngsters coming through, the club expect a number of
new signings to be made over the coming weeks."

Harry feels for 'ghost' stars
Spurs boss wonders why Parker and Dawson were called up
By Chris Burton Last updated: 2nd June 2010
SSN

Harry Redknapp has questioned Fabio Capello's treatment of those on the
fringes of his World Cup plans. The England boss announced his 23-man squad
heading to South Africa on Tuesday, with seven difficult decisions having to
be made. Theo Walcott, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Leighton Baines,
Darren Bent, Michael Dawson and Scott Parker were the unfortunate men to
miss out. Of those overlooked, Parker and Dawson were the only ones to be
left sidelined throughout England's pre-tournament preparations.
A lack of action gave them no opportunity to impress Capello in the heat of
battle, giving them little chance of making the cut. Tottenham boss
Redknapp, who manages Dawson at club level, believes the Italian coach
handled the situation badly. He feels all of those included in the 30-man
preliminary squad should have been given a run out and admits he is
particularly disappointed for West Ham midfielder Parker, who enjoyed a
standout season domestically. "They tell me Scott trained fantastically
every day in training and could not have done any more," said Redknapp. "He
worked his socks off. But whatever he did he was not going to go. "Someone
said to me he felt like a ghost on the trip, like Dawson, they were there
but not there and they could sense that. "The manager didn't really speak to
them or give them much feedback. They have not kicked a ball. "Dawson and
Parker have had great seasons but you might as well have taken 25 to
Austria. They had no intention of them being in the squad and they made up
the numbers."
Redknapp also fears England may live to regret their decision to leave
Walcott behind, with the Arsenal winger able to offer a considerable threat
down the flanks when on top of his game. "I'm surprised, I thought Theo
would go. I like him and he has got great ability," added the former
Southampton boss. "I gave him his debut and he is inconsistent at times,
but he is a winger and flies by people. "Capello probably had another look
at him and was probably frustrated with his final ball against Japan and
decided not to take him.
"But you only have to look back at Croatia when he scored a hat-trick and
ripped them to pieces. He can be a match-winner. "Aaron Lennon will have
days when it doesn't go his way. Theo can come on and give them a problem."

Hammers set to appoint Grant
The Sun
Published: Today

WEST HAM are expected to unveil Avram Grant as their new boss in the next 24
hours. The Hammers have been without a manager since they sacked Gianfranco
Zola, shortly after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League.
But the east London club have confirmed they are on the verge of making an
announcement about their new chief.
Grant, 55, emerged as the firm favourite for the Upton Park job after he
quit Portsmouth at the end of the campaign. Although Pompey went into
administration and were relegated to the Championship, the Israeli earned
widespread respect for guiding the cash-strapped club to the FA Cup final.
Ian Holloway, who took Blackpool to the top flight, Cardiff boss Dave Jones
and Sam Allardyce of Blackburn have also been linked with the vacant
position — but former Chelsea boss Grant appears to be the Hammers' No1
choice. Co-chairman David Gold said: "After an hour, we knew we could work

football club to get some stability with people that have been there, done
that and got the T-shirt. "The bottom line is the relationship between the

West Ham United to unveil Avram Grant as manager
Grant confident of having full control of team matters
Number of new signings in coming weeks, club claim
Jamie Jackson guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 2 June 2010 20.33 BST

Avram Grant will be announced as West Ham United manager today. The Israeli
will replace Gianfranco Zola and has been assured by David Gold and David
Sullivan, the co-owners, that he will be able to keep some of the club's
better players, who include Scott Parker, Matthew Upson and Robert Green.
Grant, who impressed by taking financially stricken Portsmouth to the FA Cup

following Gold and Sullivan's public interventions during Zola's tenure last
season. A statement on the club's website read: "West Ham will make a formal

Gold explains West Ham's Grant appointment
By Soccernet staff
ESPN
June 2, 2010

David Gold has explained that West Ham decided on Avram Grant as their new
manager because they felt the former Portsmouth boss was the right man to
bring stability to Upton Park. The Hammers have confirmed their new manager
will be appointed imminently and Soccernet revealed on May 27 that it is
Grant who will be replacing Gianfranco Zola at the club. After an end to the
Premier League season that witnessed disagreements between Zola and West
Ham's co-owners - Gold and his partner David Sullivan - the Upton Park
hierarchy are hoping for a more harmonious approach under Grant. "After an
hour, we knew we could work with this manager. We are very optimistic," Gold
told BBC Sport. "I think it's time for the football club to get some
stability with people that have been there, done that and got the T-shirt.
"The bottom line is the relationship between the manager and the chairman is
critical. In our case it's two chairmen so it's even more difficult as you

Grant was the surprise choice to succeed Jose Mourinho as Chelsea manager in
2008 and took the club to the final of the Champions League. Last season he
could do little to keep Portsmouth in the top flight but reached the final
of the FA Cup, only to be defeated by his former side.

The Academy

Meanwhile, the club can confirm Luis Boa Morte has been offered a new
contract following the release of the retained list of players for the new
season.

The Portugal midfielder's existing deal expires on 30 June but he has been
given a new offer after his successful comeback from a long-term knee
injury. Boa Morte's return from nine months out saw him start and score in
the 1-1 draw with Manchester City on the last day of the campaign. He has
played 80 times for the Hammers since joining the club from Fulham in
January 2007.

Meanwhile, Guillermo Franco, Ilan and Mido are all leaving the club after
the end of their respective deals. Franco scored five goals in 23 matches
after joining as an out-of-contract player last September. Ilan scored four
times in eleven games after signing in January at the same time as Mido, who
did not register in nine appearances, moved to the Boleyn Ground on a
six-month loan from Middlesbrough.

Young quartet Anthony Edgar, Jordan Spence, Matthew Fry and Oliver Lee have
also been offered new contracts. Winger Edgar and versatile defender Spence
both made their first-team bows in the past campaign. Centre-back Fry
finished the season on loan at Charlton Athletic and midfielder Lee had a
strong run in the reserves after recovering from a bout of glandular fever.

Other players who will not be back next season are central defender Bondz
N'Gala, who has joined Plymouth Argyle permanently, and midfielder Josh
Payne, who had loans at Cheltenham Town, Wycombe Wanderers and Colchester
United. Tony Brookes, Daniel Kearns and Jack Lampe will also move on to
pastures new while Davide Ferrari's loan from Brescia Calcio has expired.

At scholarship level, first professional contracts have been offered to
left-back Jordan Brown, centre-back Callum McNaughton and forward Cristian
Montano - with the latter named most improved player in the Academy. All
three were regulars in the reserves towards the end of the season. Finally,
the young trio of Peter Loveday, Nicky Barrett and Conor Okus have all been
released.

The club would like to wish all the departing players well in their future
careers. The 2010/11 Barclays Premier League fixtures will be published on
Thursday 17 June with the new season set to start on the weekend of 14/15
August. Keep an eye on whufc.com for news of the club's pre-season

Green ready to go
WHUFC.com
Robert Green is itching to get to South Africa to begin England's 2010 FIFA
World Cup challenge
01.06.2010

He might have been spared the same anxious wait as his outfield colleagues,
but Robert Green is glad the England squad has been named and the players
are free to concentrate on the 2010 FIFA World Cup. As one of three
goalkeepers in Fabio Capello's provisional 30-man selection, the West Ham
United man knew only injury could deny him a seat on the plane to South
Africa. While the 30-year-old can be pleased for himself and club-mate
Matthew Upson, who also made the cut, Green had some sympathy for Hammer of
the Year Scott Parker, who was one of seven players overlooked. "I didn't
receive a phone call from the manager. I think with the three keepers being
in we were fairly safe! We were kind of happy in the knowledge that we were
going. "It is a tough decision for Mr Capello to make and, in another way, a
pleasing one in that he has so many good players to choose from and so it
makes it difficult in that sense. "For the players who are not in the squad,
of course they will be disappointed but they can be pleased and proud still
with what they have done to be here, in this position, they have all still
had great seasons and done tremendously well and that is why they have been
in contention. "I am sure by the time pre-season comes around and they have
had a break over the summer, they will all be ready for the start of the
season for their clubs and be looking to do just as well again."
Green suffered the heartache of missing the 2006 World Cup in Germany after
rupturing his groin in a pre-tournament warm-up fixture against Belarus in
Reading. Four years on, he is hopeful of being named as England's No1 for
the Group C opener against the United States in Rustenburg on Saturday 12
June. With group-stage fixtures to follow against Algeria and Slovenia,
Green is confident the Three Lions can enjoy a productive time in South
Africa. "We are all very much looking forward to it. It is a fine line
between success and failure sometimes and we will all be doing our very best
to ensure it's a successful tournament for us."
Green and Upson are two of ten past and present West Ham players in
England's 23-man squad. Academy graduates Glen Johnson, Rio Ferdinand,
Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole have all been included, along
with David James, John Terry and Jermain Defoe.

West Ham United will have two players in the England squad at the FIFA World
Cup in South Africa
01.06.2010

Robert Green and Matthew Upson will go to the 2010 FIFA World Cup after
being named in Fabio Capello's final 23-man England squad for South Africa.
There was disappointing news for Scott Parker, however, as the two-times
reigning Hammer of the Year was one of seven players to miss out from
Capello's 30-man training squad that had prepared in Austria. England get
their Group C campaign up and running against the United States on Saturday
week before matches against Algeria and Slovenia on 18 and 23 June
respectively. The finalised squad fly out to South Africa on Wednesday night
and, upon arriving, will soon get down to work on the training pitches at
altitude in Rustenburg before an expected warm-up game on Monday against a
local side. England will remain in the north-western city to take on the US
at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium. Green and Upson will be eager to emulate the
achievements of West Ham United greats Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff
Hurst, who lifted the World Cup for England in 1966. Green is tipped to be
the Three Lions' starting goalkeeper in South Africa, having started four of
England's World Cup qualifiers and excelled in the recent 3-1 friendly
victory over Mexico at Wembley. Now 30, the Chertsey-born stopper has been a
model of consistency for the Hammers over the past three seasons, starting
126 consecutive Barclays Premier League matches for the club. Four years
ago, Green was expected to be named in Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the
2006 World Cup in Germany, only to suffer a ruptured groin muscle in a
B-team warm-up friendly with Belarus just weeks before the tournament got
under way. Since making his debut under Eriksson in the 3-2 friendly win
over Colombia in the US in May 2005, Green has added nine further caps under
Capello, conceding just seven goals. Upson, 31, has also become a regular
squad member under the present England manager, earning 12 of his 19 caps
since the Italian took charge in December 2007. The centre-back started
Capello's first match in charge - a 2-1 victory over Switzerland at Wembley
in February 2008 - and featured in five of England's ten World Cup
qualifiers. Returning to South Africa will bring back fond memories for
Upson, who made his full international debut against the Bafana Bafana in a
2-1 friendly victory in Durban in May 2003.

McCarthy misses out
WHUFC.com
South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has left Benni McCarthy out of
his World Cup plans
01.06.2010

Benni McCarthy has been left out of South Africa's 23-man squad for the FIFA
World Cup finals after the selection was finalised on Tuesday morning. The
West Ham United striker had struggled to prove his fitness in time for the
host nation. He remained on the bench for the 5-0 defeat of Guatemala at the
Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Monday night, although he did get a
second-half appearance in the 2-1 defeat of Colombia on the previous
Thursday. Injury problems since his arrival at West Ham United in February
meant McCarthy made just two Barclays Premier League starts and three
substitute appearances in four months. He was still expected to make the
World Cup, especially with the experience of 32 goals in 78 caps since his
debut in June 1997. He also played at the 1998 and 2002 finals.

Pre-season friendly latest

West Ham United have so far confirmed three summer fixtures ahead of the new
season
01.06.2010

West Ham United have confirmed three pre-season fixtures so far as the club
prepares for the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League campaign. The Hammers will
travel to Peterborough United for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday 14
July, in a match to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their arrival in the
Football League. Posh are set to push for promotion from League One next
season under new manager Gary Johnson, having finished bottom of the
Championship this time around. It will be the second time in three years
that the two clubs have met in a summer friendly after the Hammers won 2-0
at London Road on 29 July. That match was notable for Valon Behrami's debut
and two Craig Bellamy goals. The Hammers will then head to Portman Road on
Saturday 31 July to take on Ipswich Town. The trip up the A12 to Suffolk for
the 3pm fixture promises to be an entertaining game against Roy Keane's
side, who ended last season 15th in the Championship. West Ham last visited
Ipswich for a pre-season fixture on 4 August 2008, when Dean Ashton scored a
hat-trick in a 5-3 victory for the visitors. Craig Bellamy and Mark Noble
were also on target. The club will make the trip to MK Dons for a 7.30pm
kick-off on Wednesday 28 July. This summer's meeting will constitute the
club's second trip to the Buckinghamshire new town, having gone down to a
3-2 defeat in July 2007. The match saw Freddie Ljungberg make his debut for
the Hammers, while Hogan Ephraim and Matthew Upson scored the visitors'
goals. Tickets for the 28 July fixture will be priced at £10 for adults, £6
for OAPS and disabled supporters (with the career admitted free of charge),

Friendly blow for Behrami
WHUFC.com
A minor injury in training has dashed Valon Behrami's hopes of playing for
Switzerland on Tuesday night
01.06.2010

Valon Behrami will sit out Switzerland's friendly against Costa Rica on
Tuesday night after getting a knock on his right ankle in training. Behrami,
who was part of the Swiss squad at the 2006 finals and also UEFA Euro 2008,
took a blow to his ankle in the final practice session staged at the
national-team training camp in Crans-Montana before the warm-up match in
Sion. Medical staff gave him the all-clear on Monday evening but he will not
be risked against the Costa Ricans, officially listing his status for the
match as "questionable". Tuesday's match is only the second fixture between
the two nations, with Switzerland scoring a 2-0 victory in Geneva in
September 2006 in the only previous meeting. The West Ham United midfielder
is one of Ottmar Hitzfeld's key players for the finals, where the Swiss will
meet Spain, Chile and Honduras in the group stage, even though he has not
played for a month. The 24-year-old had only returned to training a
fortnight ago after a knee problem caused him to miss the final Barclays
Premier League game of the season against Manchester City on 9 May. Hitzfeld
is believed to have settled on his starting XI for the World Cup, with No11
Behrami set to play in a wide midfield role, swapping flanks with Bayer 04
Leverkusen's Tranquillo Barnetta on a regular basis. The German-born manager
will also be without FC Lucerne midfielder Hakan Yakin and Hannover 96
defender Mario Eggimann against Costa Rica, but both are expected to be fit
for the World Cup. Switzerland have lost their last two home friendlies to
Norway and Uruguay, meaning Hitzfeld is eager for a morale-boosting win
ahead of their send-off match against World Cup holders Italy in Geneva on
Saturday. It is a deliberately tough test, with the Swiss set to start their
finals campaign on 16 June against European champions Spain in Durban

Sir Trevor hails Young Lions
WHUFC.com
The club legend has paid tribute to England's U17 stars - including young
Hammers forward Robert Hall
01.06.2010

Sir Trevor Brooking has hailed England's success at the UEFA European
Under-17 Championship after the 2-1 defeat of Spain in the final. The Young
Lions - with Hammers starlet Robert Hall appearing in all five games at the
Liechtenstein tournament - were impressive from start to finish and fully
deserved to lift the trophy on Sunday evening. Hall was most regularly used
in a wide attacking role and at still only 16 was one of the younger players
on view. Speaking to TheFA.com, Sir Trevor, the Football Association's
director of football development, said: "It's fantastic for everyone
involved. I'm obviously delighted for the players and the coaching staff,
but, also for everyone at The FA ... to get to this one and win it, with a
group who we always thought were very good, is brilliant."
"More than anything it was a great team performance and you can see this
group have got a great team spirit. "It is important to get that taste of
winning early on [in their careers] and I can see how much they enjoyed it,
but, we must remember that it's just a little sample for them. There's still
a long way to go in their development. "Having said that, it's really good
for this group because it has whetted their appetite. They know what it
feels like and they now know they can do it. Hopefully there will be a few
of these that will progress into the Under-21 and senior teams."

Noble's recipe for success
WHUFC.com
Mark Noble has thrown his support behind the club's healthy eating programme
01.06.2010

Back in the old days, footballers would eat almost whatever they liked
before matches, and enjoy a post-match pint in the pub following the final
whistle. Into the 21st century, and Barclays Premier League footballers
cannot afford to be so ill-disciplined when it comes to their diets.
Instead, West Ham United's players carefully watch what they eat to ensure
they maintain tip-top physical condition all season long. With concern over
childhood obesity and youngsters' lack of exercise, the Premier League
Creating Chances Places for Players scheme is taking steps to ensure
schoolchildren from all backgrounds understand the importance of eating
healthily. At a special event organised by the club's Community Sports
Trust, Mark Noble, Head Chef Tim De'ath - also the England chef at the FIFA
World Cup - and Academy Director Tony Carr met a group of children from the
London Borough of Newham at the Boleyn Ground, explaining the benefits of
leading a healthy lifestyle. "Obesity is a problem," said Noble, who is a
proud father himself. "I'll see a kid who is overweight with low self-esteem
who feels too embarrassed to join in a PE class and it's a horrible
situation. Parents should deal more strictly with them and encourage them to
join in PE. Feed your kids properly and they'll grow up properly. I'll be
like that with my kids. "The club weigh us before we go away on holiday and
if we don't weigh the same when we come back we get fined. Some of the
players go nutty in the first week of holiday and then run round fields.
"During the season, though, it is literally nine months of eating no
rubbish."
Noble also led a training session with the youngsters on the Boleyn Ground
pitch, promoting the need for them to take part in sport and other physical
exercise to keep themselves in the best possible physical condition. Academy
Director Tony Carr also explained the importance for young people to
exercise if they are going to attempt to pursue a career in sport. Carr is
in his fourth decade with the club and is responsible for the development of
many of the game's biggest names. In 2006, Carr was diagnosed with Type 2
diabetes. After learning to live with the condition and proving it should be
no barrier to a healthy and active life. Community Sports Trust Chief Mick
King said the event, and its positive message, had proved to be a huge
success. "The Project demonstrates the Club's commitment to the healthy
living agenda. It is important to link healthy living with an active
lifestyle which is why health education combines effectively with exciting
activity programmes. "The collective contribution made by Mark Noble, Tony
Carr and Tim De'ath was outstanding in terms of enthusiasm, knowledge,
practical awareness and positive role modelling."

Rob Green wants to make up for 2006
BBC.co.uk

England goalkeeper Rob Green says he will savour his World Cup place this
summer after missing out four years ago with a groin injury. The 30-year-old
West Ham man was named in Fabio Capello's final 23-man World Cup squad on
Tuesday. He missed out on Germany in 2006 after injuring himself against
Belarus. "That highlighted how precarious a position your life can be in. I
want to take advantage, take everything on board and enjoy it," he said.
"Barring anything happening in the next 24 hours, touch wood, I should be
fine," he added. Green, who came through the ranks at Norwich City, was in
Norfolk to open Norfolk FA's new football development centre on the day that
Capello announced his squad. He told BBC Radio Norfolk it was good that the
battle to start in goal for England was so close between himself, David
James and Joe Hart. "I think it promotes a friendly and strong rivalry
within the keepers," he said. "We know that every training session, every
game every opportunity that we've got we've really got to take that chance.
"That can only promote people being on top form for the finals and the final
games themselves. "It's something we've really got to take as a positive,
whoever's going to be playing will have to be playing well to keep the other
two out."

Duo named in final 23

Matthew Upson and Rob Green have both been named in the 23-man England squad
for this summer's World Cup Finals in South Africa. However there was
disappointing news for Scott Parker, who was one of the unlucky seven struck
off the initial 30-man squad list - albeit a not unexpected exclusion
considering that Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick and Ledley King can all play
in Parker's defensive midfield role. The 29-year-old Hammer, who was almost
certainly bidding to appear in the finals for the last time given that he
will be 33 by the time the next tournament comes around, misses out along
with Everton's Leighton Baines, Tottenham's Michael Dawson and Tom
Huddlestone, Man City's Adam Johnson, Arsenal's Theo Walcott and
Sunderland's Darren Bent.

The full 23-man England squad is as follows:

Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green; Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Rio
Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen
Warnock; Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank
Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips; Peter Crouch,
Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

* Another Hammer who won't be featuring in South Africa this summer is
recent signing Benni McCarthy, who has been suprisingly left out of the
Bafana Bafana squad by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira. The 32-year-old, who
is his country's all-time record goalscorer has been ommitted from the squad
due to fitness concerns.

Prem duo eye Real youngster
Reds and Hammers linked with Opare loan
Last updated: 1st June 2010

Liverpool and West Ham are competing with a host of clubs from across Europe
for Real Madrid starlet Daniel Opare, skysports.com understands. Opare is
regarded as one of Africa's brightest talents and was spotted by Real early
on as he moved to the Spanish capital in 2007. The Ghana youngster was
tipped to make the breakthrough from their Castilla side last term, but
injury hampered his progress. Now fully fit, the versatile full-back, who
can also play anywhere in midfield, is now set to be allowed to move on loan
next season. This has alerted a string of clubs from across Europe, with
England very much a potential destination with both Liverpool and West Ham
understood to be keen on taking him. Also keen to snap him up are the likes
of Lyon, PSV Eindhoven, Club Brugge, Buraspor and Steve McClaren's
Wolfsburg. The player's representative Chris Nathaniel confirmed to
skysports.com that interest in Opare was significant. "Daniel is fully fit
again now and is ready to play next season," he told skysports.com. "Of
course his injury means he will not be considered for Real's first-team but
he hopes a spell on loan somewhere could help him come to the attention of
Jose Mourinho. "With that in mind, Daniel is now considering his options
carefully as he has a number of options and he is already looking forward to
pre-season training - wherever that may be."

Fats yer lot I'm afraid Benni

SOUTH AFRICA'S all-time top goalscorer Benni McCarthy has missed out on the
World Cup. The West Ham striker, 32, was axed from the final 23-man squad by
coach Carlos Alberto Parreira despite netting 32 goals in 78 matches.
McCarthy struggled with fitness last season and was criticised by Hammers
co-owner David Sullivan for being too fat.
Parreira said: "It was a sad thing to have to split apart our family but I
told them to keep their heads up, as life goes on." McCarthy said: "The
final squad is a tough call for any coach and I'm sure it was not made
without heartache." Everton's Steven Pienaar, Fulham's Kagisho Dikgacoi and
Portsmouth's Aaron Mokoena - the Bafana Bafana captain - made the final
squad.

Redknapp slams Capello's treatment of Dawson and Parker
Published 23:00 01/06/10 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Harry Redknapp has slammed Fabio Capello's treatment of Michael Dawson and
Scott Parker and says the players felt like "ghosts" in the England squad.
Capello trimmed his England squad down to 23 yesterday and it was no major
surprise when Dawson and Parker were two of the seven players to face World
Cup heartache. Both players have enjoyed memorable seasons for Tottenham and
West Ham, but they failed to play a minute's worth of action in the two
friendlies against Mexico and Japan. Redknapp cannot understand why they
were taken on an intense training camp to Austria if Capello had no
intention of seeing them in action and feels they were only there to make up
the numbers. Redknapp said: "They tell me Scott trained fantastic every day
and could not have done anymore. He worked his socks off. But whatever he
did, he was not going to go [to the World Cup]. "Someone said to me he felt
like a ghost on the trip, like Dawson; they were there but not there and
they could sense that. "The manager didn't really speak to them or give them
much feedback. But they were never going to go. "They have not kicked a
ball. Dawson and Parker have had great seasons but you might as well have
taken 25 [to Austria]. "They had no intention of them being in the squad and
they made up the numbers."
This is the third time the Tottenham manager has had a public bust-up with
Capello after he rubbished the Italian's tactics in his first game in charge
and criticised his handling of Ledley King's injury. Redknapp was also
shocked to see Theo Walcott left out of the squad and feels he could have
been a matchwinner for England in South Africa. Redknapp added: "I thought
Theo would go. I like him and he has got great ability. "I gave him his
debut [at Southampton]. He is inconsistent at times, but he is a winger and
flies by people. I thought he would be in the squad. "I am surprised. He
(Capello) probably had another look at him and was probably frustrated with
his final ball against Japan and decided not to take him. "But you only have
to look back at Croatia when he scored a hat-trick and ripped them to
pieces. I am surprised he has not gone. "He can play wide or through the
middle. I think he will end up in the middle. "Aaron Lennon will have days
when it doesn't go his way. Theo can come on and give them a problem. I am
surprised he didn't make the trip."
