The Big Interview - John Hartson
WHUFC.com
Ex-West Ham United striker John Hartson is thrilled with the Hammers' new signings
07.10.2014

Ex-West Ham United and Wales striker John Hartson was back at the Boleyn Ground for Sunday's match against Queens Park Rangers.
Current QPR manager Harry Redknapp signed the striker during his spell as Hammers' manager from Arsenal in February 1997 for a fee of £3.3m. The Welsh striker was a huge success, scoring 33 goals in two years at the Boleyn and remains a fans' favourite.

West Ham TV caught up with Hartson on his return to east London…

John, it's great to see you back here at the Boleyn Ground, is it good to be back?
JH: "It is. It's always nice to go back to your former clubs. I do a bit of work for the BBC now so I'm quite busy. "I always get a nice welcome from the fans and it gives me opportunity to catch up with people in football that I haven't seen for a while. David Pleat for example, was in the press room, he gave me my debut when I was at Luton Town so it was good to catch up with him."

Have you been impressed with how West Ham have started the season?

JH: "I have yes, they've brought in some pace to the side with Enner Valencia who I saw do very, very well for Ecuador in the World Cup. That was a shrewd bit of business. "Sakho's already got five goals this season. Stewart Downing is playing the best football I've seen from him, I wouldn't be surprised if he got a call up to the England squad soon, he's been playing that well. "Form wise, West Ham have been playing well. West Ham got a great result against Liverpool here the other week. They were a little bit unfortunate to lose at Manchester United because they could have got a point there. On another day it might not have been ruled offside, if it were here instead of Old Trafford it might have been a different story. That's the bit of luck you need."

Sakho's got five goals in five games. How important is it for strikers to get off the mark that quickly?

JH: "Every team needs goals it's as simple as that. Under Sam Allardyce West Ham are very strong defensively. Reid and Tomkins are both very strong, then you've got James Collins as well, a good friend of mine. "But you need goals. West Ham haven't had a 15-20 goals a season striker for a while now and they've brought in Sakho, who's a threat - you can play it into his feet and expect shots on target, he's a good finisher. He's fast, he's strong, he's a presence. So it's important to have a player you know will finish the chances you make for him."

How important is Alex Song going to be this season?

JH: "He's got great experience. He's fantastic at sitting in front of the defence. He can maraud around the midfield, he's good on the ball and he's another presence on the pitch. "I think the new signings have all been very good additions to the squad. Song, obviously coming from Barcelona, has played at the biggest stage. He'll help the younger players in the squad too which can only be a good thing for the club.

What are your favourite memories of playing at the Boleyn Ground?

JH: "I have quite a few to be honest. I scored quite a few goals here, I think it was 33 goals in 70 odd games here at West Ham. The majority of them scored at home. "On my home debut we beat Spurs 4-3, I got above Sol Campbell and put him and the ball in the back of the net. We won the game 4-3 and I knew how important the win was for the fans. Tottenham obviously being a big rival. I won a penalty too in that game which Dicksy smashed into the roof of the net. It was a really wet and windy night. "Another memory was beating Leicester 1-0. John Moncur scored that day. We needed wins to stay up so that was important. "Another great memory was beating Sheffield Wednesday 5-1. Paul Kitson got a hat-trick and I scored two.. "I remember scoring at the Boleyn against West Ham for Arsenal, we beat them 1-0. I scored a disallowed goal here for Coventry. So great, great memories. It's a wonderful place to come to. The fans are renowned for the passion and the atmosphere they create here. The noise and the songs here are very special. "Historically, West Ham is a very big club. It's good to see them back as an established Premier League club, they're back where they should be."

Exciting times ahead too, as the club move into the new stadium?

JH: "Absolutely, it's only about 18 months to go now. It's important the fans get behind the move. It'll mean greater revenue with 20,000 more seats. They'll be more income coming into the club and an even better atmosphere. In turn that'll mean more money for transfers. The key is to make sure the ground sells out. "It works both ways. If the team is doing well, playing good football and doing well in the league, then the crowds will come. West Ham is a hugely supported club, it might not have the same profile as the Arsenal's or the Chelsea's but they are a massive club in their own right. "

Finally, James Collins misses out with injury, but how big are Wales' next two internationals?

JH: "I'm covering the games. First game is against Bosnia so that's a big test. They have good players like Edin Dzeko at Manchester City.
"Aaron Ramsey is out with a hamstring injury, I think he's out for a month so that's a huge blow. Hopefully Gareth Bale will be fit, he's such a huge player for Wales. "We've got Bosnia and then Cyprus next week, they're difficult games but definitely matches Wales can get something from. I think Chris Coleman needs to get four points from the next two games if Wales are going to qualify for the Euros."

Our daily look at the West Ham United stories making the news
08.10.2014

New Zealand-based website stuff.co.nz carries coverage of Joint-Chairman David Gold's tweet about there being 'every chance' of Winston Reid signing a new contract.

Meanwhile, the Mail Online says that Turkey are trying to persuade Academy youngster Oscar Borg to represent them at international level.
Finally, CaughtOffside.com report that Liverpool are interested in the Hammers' on loan midfielder Alex Song.

A number of Turkish clubs are reported to be expressing an interest in West Ham youngster Oscar Borg. The 16-year-old left-sided full back recently shunned a contract offer from Manchester United and most recently featured - and scored - in West Ham's Under 18s thrashing of Brighton & Hove Albion, whom they beat 4-0 at Little Heath last weekend (with Borg scoring once). However it is being reported (Mail) that the likes of Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are all keeping tabs on the teenager having discovered that he is eligible for Turkish citizenship as a result of Borg's grandmother having being born in the country. Turkish league rules state that only five foreign players are permitted per team, making any highly-rated, European-based players with Turkish lineage highly-sought after by the nation's biggest clubs. Although Borg - who has been likened to Real Madrid's Welsh international winger Gareth Bale - recently agreed to remain with West Ham, he remains on the radar of many top clubs.

David Gold rules out 'cheap' Carroll sale

David Gold has admitted that he would reject a £10million offer for Andy Carroll. The 25-year-old striker is yet to kick a ball this season after sustaining yet another ankle injury during the summer. However West Ham's co-owner clearly believes Carroll still has a big part to play for the club both this season and beyond. Asked by a supporter whether he would accept an offer of that amount from Carroll's former club Newcastle, Gold replied: "no I wouldn't."

Rob Kelly @robertekelly

"@robertekelly: @davidgold dg if you were offered £10m for AC from Newcastle would you think about accepting it? No I wouldn't. dg

Of course, that isn't quite the same as suggesting he would be averse to parting with the some time England international per se.
However Gold's thoughts appear to be in stark contrast to those of co-owner David Sullivan who revealed recently that had he known how long Carroll would have been sidelined for he wouldn't have signed him in the first place. Speaking before the summer transfer window closed, in an interview with Talksport, Sullivan admitted: "Had we known what we know now we wouldn't have signed the player. But it's easy to be wise after the event."

Carroll initially moved to West Ham on a season-long loan from Liverpool - who paid Newcastle £35million to take him to Anfield - in August 2012. During his first season at the club he made a total of 28 appearances, scoring seven goals. Having made the switch permanent in the summer of 2013, Carroll's first season as a Hammer was again disrupted by a series of injuries and suspension meaning he was to make just 16 appearances (two goals) - his last coming in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City back in May.

Fans condemn Nolan reception
KUMB.com

West Ham supporters have slammed the pockets of individuals who booed Kevin Nolan as he entered the field of play during Sunday's 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. A vocal minority responded to the substitution of Mauro Zarate for the returning captain with booing - much to the disgust of the vast majority of fans, who descended upon KUMB in the ensuing hours to hit out at Nolan's critics. "People genuinely need to have a look at themselves," wrote DaveWHU1964 on the KUMB Forum. "Two up, heading for seventh and some still need their quality booing time and direct it at a guy who has been a big part in us getting up, staying up and helping create the platform for the club to push on as we now are."

That was a view shared by fellow KUMB member Pink Palermo. "Nolan ain't the first to be booed and won't be the last - shameful stuff, in my opinion. He could be a great option for the final 20 minutes each week, why view his introduction negatively? It could be a great move some weeks. Why can't people look for the positive in a situation rather than the negative?"

And Het-Field too. "It's something that needs to stop. Particularly about Nolan, who has generally an excellent record with us. He has scored some very important goals, led the team very well, and has been an asset to the club since day one. Fans can be fickle, but booing certain players is simply not on, and Nolan is one of them."

However not all were in agreement that Nolan's reception was unnecessary and unwarranted. "it's his conduct rather than his ability I have a problem with," penned Red Iron. "I don't believe he's fit to wear our shirt let alone the armband. The way he behaves towards the referee and our own players is disrespectful. His conduct reflects badly on our club. Worse things have happened at west ham than Nolan getting booed."

Devonshire Flu added: "The boos weren't for Nolan. Everyone knows he leads by example and has made big contributions over the last three years. The boos are a message to Sam. "We don't want one striker with Nolan playing essentially as a defender in their half, contributing nothing to attacks except getting on the end of half chances and burying most of them. The boos are a reminder not to go back to the lean periods of last season where we never looked like scoring."

What do you think about the booing of our captain? Have you say on the KUMB Forum thread or leave a message below.

Gareth Southgate will not take any risks with Carl Jenkinson's fitness
Last Updated: 08/10/14 3:30pm
SSN

England Under-21s head coach Gareth Southgate will be cautious with Carl Jenkinson for their forthcoming European U21 Championship play-off with Croatia. The right-back has had the first two months of his season disrupted by a hamstring injury, and he had to wait until Saturday to make his first start of the campaign. Jenkinson, who joined West Ham on a season-long loan from Arsenal in the summer, suffered no reaction to his injury during the 2-0 win over QPR and was cleared to join the England Under-21 squad this week. The 22-year-old has been limited in training ahead of Friday's opening leg against Croatia at Molineux, and Southgate is aware that Jenkinson's lack of match fitness could also restrict him to a minor role in next Tuesday's return in Vinkovci. "Sunday was his first 90 minutes since he was out with a hamstring injury," said Southgate. "Not only because of the recovery from the injury but also because of the first 90 minutes he had back means he's still recovering. "It's one that we'll be quite careful with because I think on the back of an injury, having played his first 90 minutes, he would be unlikely to play two 90 minutes for us physically. "So we have just got to assess it, really, but I am not putting him under any pressure. It is important he feels comfortable with everything and that he's ready to train.
"I would think he will do some sort of training [on Wednesday] but not fully with the team just yet."

But Southgate is more positive over the fitness of Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, who suffered a dead leg during the 2-1 win over Everton at the weekend. "We've one or two little minor niggles, but Luke's absolutely fine," he said. "He followed the programme we would have for him on the back of him playing on Sunday. He did 50 minutes of our session and he is in a good place."

AN INJURY FREE CHRISTMAS
By Sean Whetstone 8 Oct 2014 at 12:38
West Ham Till I Die

West Ham's current injury list of seven players looks to drastically reduce to just one before our next game against Burnley and could be zero as we enter December subject to no further injuries if chairman David Gold is to be believed.

Gold speaking via twitter has said all players should be fit by the 18th October and available for selection with the exception of Andy Carroll.

Even Kouyate who was listed for a November 8th return date by Physio room appears to have made an early recovery from a groin injury with Gold's tweet suggesting 'I am hoping he will be available for Burnley' when questioned specifically on Kouyate.

Long term absentee Joey O'Brien should also be fit with Gold confirming he should be available for selection for Burnley.

Gold also insists Andy Carroll has every chance of returning in November with Physio room giving 29th November as a return date which is the Newcastle at home match.

This means we are likely to face December and possibly the Christmas period with a fully fit squad unlike the winter of discontent last season when injuries forced us into the relegation zone and the Sam out protests .

Injury List

James Collins Groin Strain Return Date 18th Oct
Guy Demel Knock Return Date 18th Oct
Ricardo Vaz Te Knock Return Date 18th Oct
Mark Noble Calf Injury Return Date 18th Oct
Chek Kouyate Groin Injury Return Date 18th Oct
Joey O'Brien Knee Injury Return Date 18th Oct
Andy Carroll Ankle/Foot Injury Return Date 29th Nov

WAIT TILL VALENCIA REALLY GETS IN TO HIS GOAL SCORING STRIDE!
By S J Chandos 8 Oct 2014 at 08:00
West Ham Till I Die

Sakho is quite rightly earning the plaudits for his goal scoring exploits so far this season. Sam Allardyce got it spot on, when he praised Sakho's happy knack to be 'in the right place at the right time.' A characteristic that Alan Taylor was once famously feted for during his time at the club in the mid-to-late 1970s. It is true that the majority of Sakho's goals have been close range efforts, but you ultimately have to be in the right position to be able take advantage of a goal scoring opportunity. And that is what Sakho appears to be doing consistently well. In fact, it appears that we have finally got what we have all been dreaming of for some considerable time, a genuine, penalty box, goal poacher!

However, lets not forget that Enner Valencia has yet to get in to his goal scoring stride. So far, he has chalked up that stunning strike against Hull City, but there is undoubtedly a lot more to come from him. Indeed, Valencia is playing very well and brings the qualities of mobility, lightening pace and invention to the side. Plus, along with Sakho, he is very industrious and maintains a high work rate throughout 90 minutes. It must be a nightmare for central defenders facing the Valencia-Sakho combination, being constantly tested and stretched. I bet retirement suddenly looked a welcome option for Rio Ferdinand last Sunday, after being run ragged by Sakho-Valencia-Zarate! Valencia will undoubtedly start hitting the target regularly in the not too distant future and when he does, we will start to see the full goal scoring potential of our new strike force. And I have no doubt that a proportion of his future goals will come from headers. Valencia possesses an uncanny ability to time his jump so he 'hangs' in the air. In fact, that exact attribute remainds me of another striking hero of the 1975 FA Cup win, namely Billy Jennings. Those that saw Jennings play will recall that he had an almost identical ability.

I was very pleased to see Zarate start against QPR. He is a player that I rate highly. He may not have the same work rate as Sakho-Valencia, but he does have excellent vision and technical ability. He played some delightful balls against QPR and constantly looked to initiate one-twos in and around the opposition box. Plus, he always carries the potent threat of hitting the target from distance. Something that he is well equipped to achieve. In short, he is a player that can make a major contribution to our campaign this season. David Sullivan should be congratulated for bringing such an accomplished player to the club, for what amounted to a free transfer! Indeed, it was good to see a Sam Allardyce team take to the field of play that was able to combine the creative talents of Zarate, Amalfitano and Downing! Although, in the injury absence of Noble and Kouyate, it inevitably meant that the excellent Alex Song had to put in an extra industrious shift in the midfield engine room.

On the question of Stewart Downing, it has to be said that he is playing 'out of his skin' in the new central position, behind the strikers. He is much more involved centrally and it really gives him the opportunity to bring his vision, touch and creativity to bear. It was an inspired move to adapt his talents to that role. And again, one must agree with Allardyce when he states that Downing has been the outstanding English footballer playing in that play-maker role. It really is a shame that Downing's fine form has not been recognised by England and that he will probably not get a chance to play the advanced play-maker role at international level. He could potentially bring another dimension to England's attacking play.

Finally, a word of praise for James Tomkins. Although having to contend with the disatraction of the much publicised recent court case, he has built upon last season's progress and done consistently well in the first phase of this campaign. Tomkins always had the ability to become a top class centre-back and hopefully he is now on an acelerated journey to realising that potential. Indeed, the West Ham collective defensive unit of Adrian, Jenkinson, Cresswell, Tomkins and Reid delivered its first clean sheet of the season against QPR. Hopefully, it will prove to be the first of many in the current PL campaign. There is no reason why not, once the defensive unit beds-in and they become more familiar with playing together on a regular basis.

At last! Irons striker punts pay off big time
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on October 8, 2014 in Whispers
Claret & Hugh

It's been a very long time coming but at last our luck on the striker front has changed …and no club deserves it more! After the likes of Modibo Maiga and the constantly injured Andy Carroll, who would have believed that a player from a League Two French club – signed EVENTUALLY on a long term deal – would become the early season hero. Personally I loved the bloke from the moment I saw him – full of running, determined to make an impact, the happy knack of being in the right place at the right time and clearly very very happy to be here . Diafra Sakho we love you mate and HOW you came to join us isn't really an issue but err "Well done David Sullivan.!" Oh dear I can here the keyboards rattling already as the forum boys get ready to dub me "company man!"
Enner Valencia too looked a punt at £12 million according to some who had him marked him down as an expensive Maiga after one game!
His set piece goal and ability to make a right nuisance of himself over 90 minutes has been a joy to behold. These two signings along with Cheikhou Kouyate have been extraordinary and then along came Alex Song. An amazing set of deals. Add Morgan Amaltifano, Aaron Darren Creswell, Mauro Zarate, Diego Poyet and loanee Carl Jenkinson and we see just how successful the new signing policy between board and manager has been. Back in the summer it was all about the boss being under pressure – if this is pressure I'm sure he's quite happy to see it brought on. Tomorrow night we have the prospect of England playing San Marino in front of us but you know what, the Irons start has made even that bearable. To be able to sit composing this piece is a real pleasure simply because I didn't see this coming in a million years. A hearty congratulations to everyone who made this brilliant start happen.

Kouyate always confident of quick return

Influential Irons midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate has been given an "outside chance" of making the starting line up for Burnley. Club insiders reckon that regardless of whether the Senegal international makes it or not, he will definitely be back for the clash against Manchester City on October 25. David Gold had tweeted earlier in the week that everybody would be fit for the Burnley clash but there remains a doubt over Kouyate despite him have made a much quicker recovery than expected. A source explained to ClaretandHugh: "He's a quick healer and was always insistent from the moment he got the injury he'd be ready for Burnley. However that decision is in the lap of the manager who usually gives returning players a spot on the bench rather than launch them straight back in Mark Noble is also back in training and will be ready for the match at Turf Moor.

WBA keep an eye on Jarvis

West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine is keeping a careful eye on Matt Jarvis' position at West Ham. The Baggies boss was keen to take the winger to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan in the summer but the Hammers were not ready to agree such a deal. Now Irvine is ready to watch the player on a regular basis as he starts his comeback from injury and may make Januuary bid. The Irons still remain entirely disinterested in a loan deal for a player who cost them a reported £9 million. Irvine knows that the Hammers 'bottom line' would be around £7 million and is hoping the Hawthorns board will back him in his first major transfer market splash. A Hammers source told ClaretandHugh: "If clubs make sensible bids we always listen but there's absolutely no point in putting one of your better players out on loan – that made no sense in the summer and doesn't now."

Leroy: The fans MUST drown out Nolan's abusers
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on October 8, 2014 in Whispers

Leroy Rosenior has told the real fans to "stand up and drown out those who boo Kevin Nolan" declaring: "A tiny minority has shamed the name of our great club." Leroy – Claret and Hugh's top columnist – was utterly appalled at the boo boys who abused the Hammers skipper and said: "You should be utterly ashamed – there's no place in this game for people who boo their own players." He declared: "Here we were enjoying a brilliantly comfortable win and that breaks our – horrible. We should have gone away at the end of the game feeling really happy and comfortable but I didn't because of those ghastly fans who booed Nolan. "Whatever anyone wants to think of him as a player is their decision but he is 100 per cent West Ham and has been since he got here and that makes me even more uncomfortable with what's happened. "So I want to call on all the decent fans – should that ever happen again – to cheer their heads off for the lad and drown out the abusers. "This is a great great club and the vast majority of our fans are brilliant. We have always been recognised as a fair club and what happened to Kevin was very wrong so let all of the good guys put it right if such a horrible situation ever arises again."

Nick Haycock's Development team beat Peterborough United 4-2 in a friendly match at Nene Park Academy on Tuesday afternoon. Matthias Fanimo, who recently returned after a failed loan spell with Tranmere Rovers scored two goals proving Tranmere manager Rob Edwards was wrong to keep him on the bench for the majority of his loan. The short term loan which could of been extended by another 60 days was cancelled after Fanimo failed to get enough game time at the League 2 outfit after featuring for just 10 minutes over the 30 period.
Ex Posh player Jaanai Gordon also scored yesterday against his former team, the youngster was signed by West Ham in January 2014 is believed to have cost up to £3,5m in fees matching the recent investment made for Sakho. Sebastian Lletget scored the opener in the convincing win over Peterborough.

CANDH EXCLUSIVE – Sakho deal: No escape clauses
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on October 8, 2014 in Whispers
Claret & Hugh

West Ham negotiated a straight deal with no escape clauses when signing Diafra Sakho from Metz. ClaretandHugh has established that the only clauses involved in the deal are appearance-based cash additions to his former club and that no 'release triggers' are included.
Fears had been arising that the five goal striker's deal may have release clauses included similar to those contained in Mo Diame's contract. In that case the midfielder would have been allowed to listen and move on should any bid of over £3.5 million been made.
However no such deal was done with Sakho's advisers although the Hammers have done a deal could rise to a maximum of £7 million should the player make around 140 appearances. A top insider told us exclusively: "There are no escape clauses at all. Details of contracts are confidential but I can asure you there are no release triggers. It's a great bit of business by the club."
