Hammers at war with FA

The FA have written to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to indicate that
they will not recognise any decision made in respect of the West Ham United
v Sheffield United case. The Hammers found out earlier today - much to their
annoyance - that the Football Association had contacted the CSA is order to
stress that the recent arbitration panel's decision to allow Sheffield
United to sue for damages should stand.
The letter - written by the FA's head legal representative, Alistair Maclean
- states: "The FA's position is that any award made by an arbitration
tribunal convened under FA Rules is final and binding on the parties. "FA
Rules do not provide for right of appeal to CAS."
The CAS announced last week that they would defer a decision on whether to
hear the case until the end of November. Today's news follows a report at
the weekend that claimed Sheffield United had applied for an injunction
attempting to prevent West Ham from taking the matter further.

Charles Sale, Sports Agenda: The FA's lawyers demand the final word on the
Tevez affair

The FA have caused yet more controversy in Sheffield United's £30million
relegation damages claim against West Ham by interfering in the London
club's attempt to have the matter settled by the Court of Arbitration for
Sport. West Ham are furious that the FA have sent an official letter to CAS
headquarters in Lausanne making it clear Soho Square do not recognise CAS as
a final right of appeal. This is despite FIFA having the CAS option in their
statutes and urging all their national associations to do the same. The
inflammatory correspondence was written by the FA's head of legal and
business affairs, Alistair Maclean. He asks for his letter to be copied to
the panel determining whether CAS has jurisdiction to hear the West Ham
appeal over an FA-instigated tribunal awarding massive damages to Sheffield
United after the Carlos Tevez third party ownership affair.
The letter states: 'The FA's position is that any award made by an
arbitration tribunal convened under FA Rules is final and binding on the
parties. FA Rules do not provide for right of appeal to CAS.' The Premier
League are also on a war footing with the FA for opening up the Tevez can of
worms when their disputes process and two court hearings had declared the
matter closed. This followed West Ham's £5.5m fine for playing Tevez when
his registration was unclear.

Hammers to run rule over Irish midfielder

WEST Ham United will run the rule over St Patrick's Athletic midfielder
Keith Fahey in this week's FAI Ford Cup semi-final. Saints take on
newly-crowned eircom League of Ireland champions Bohemians at Richmond Park
in Dublin on Saturday, and Fahey is set to be watched by Irons'
representatives, according to a report in Wednesday's Irish Sun. The article
claims Hammers' boss Gianfranco Zola was impressed by Fahey during St
Patrick's recent two-legged Uefa Cup defeat to Bundesliga side Hertha
Berlin. Fahey, who turns 26 in January, has already had one failed stint in
England. The Dublin-born player began his career as a trainee at Arsenal
before joining Aston Villa for £250,000 in 1999. However, he made just one
appearance for Villa in an Intertoto Cup game against French side Lille OSC
in 2002 before returning to his native Ireland and non-league side Bluebell
United in 2002. From there, he was quickly snapped up by St Patrick's. He
initially struggled to make an impact in the capital, however, and moved to
Drogheda United in 2005 but rejoined St Pat's the following year.

Hammers eye move for St Pat's star - TeamTalk

West Ham are eyeing up St Patrick's midfielder Keith Fahey after his
impressive performances against Hertha Berlin in the UEFA Cup last month.
Gianfranco Zola's chief talent scout Roger Cross will be at St Pat's home
ground, Richmond Park, on Friday to see the 25-year-old in action in person.
Other clubs, including Preston, Norwich and Bristol City, have watched him
play but the Hammers are the first Premier League side to show a definite
interest. Fahey is desperate for another chance to play in England after his
first stint as a youngster with Arsenal. He joined Aston Villa for 300,000
euros in 1999 but made only one appearance in the Intertoto Cup being moving
to St Pat's in 2003, with the League of Ireland side likely to demand a fee
of 500,000 euros for one of their prized assets. Meanwhile, Derry striker
Mark Farren is being eyed up by Brighton after the League One side watched
him for two games.

HATCHET MAN: Brass-necked FA keen for Carlos Tevez argy bargy to rumble on
Last updated at 10:21 AM on 22nd October 2008

After gatecrashing the Carlos Tevez saga at the last minute, the Football
Association have the cheek to tell the Court for Arbitration in Sport to
butt out. Their intervention in the matter had already put Premier League
noses out of joint and now Lord Triesman's organisation are taking on
all-comers. Their push for power and political clout seems to know no
bounds. CAS have not even decided themselves whether they can hear West
Ham's appeal against a compensation ruling in favour of Sheffield United,
but the FA have written to them anyway. The FA's stance could cause yet more
trouble too. Imagine if CAS rule they can hear the appeal and make a
judgement in West Ham's favour, Sheffield United will certainly not take
that without a fight. It is a lawyer's dream, but for everybody else it is
just a painful, weeping sore that the FA should stop picking.

Hammers star calls for patience over new formation
10:10am Wednesday 22nd October 2008
Echo

MARK NOBLE insists West Ham's new formation under boss Gianfranco Zola will
soon start to come to fruition. Despite delivering a more entertaining brand
of football, the Italian's 4-3-2-1 system has yet to deliver on results.
Failure to turn possession into goals has cost the Hammers dear in the back
to back defeats against well-organised outfits in Bolton and Hull City.
However, Noble - who for one is clearly relishing the freedom afforded by
playing as the advanced man in a three-man midfield - reckons the new style
will eventually start to bring success. "The new system is working.
Obviously it's going to be a slow process though," admitted the 20-year-old.
"It's not going to work over months, it's going to be a couple of years when
he finally gets it going. "I'm really enjoying it. Then again, it's only
enjoyable if you're winning. We haven't in the last two games so you can't
laugh and smile." Indeed, it would appear more works needs to be done and
Noble is aware that, with Arsenal and Manchester United next up, the team
need to start converting their chances if they are to keep themselves in the
top half of the Premier League table.
"Twelve points from our opening eight matches is not enough," he said. "We
thought we should have won last week (against Bolton) as well, although it
was a bit of bad luck with (Robert) Greeny dropping the first one. It's
unlike him. "Again at Hull we felt we should have taken the three points as
well. The first half especially the way we played and kept the ball, the way
we passed it. We just couldn't score. "But it hasn't happened and now we've
got Arsenal and Man Utd in the next two games so we've got a big job to try
and do our best to get some points out of them."

No Arsenal sell-out as fans vote with their wallets
11:31am Wednesday 22nd October 2008

By Rob Pritchard »

WEST Ham United supporters are threatening to vote with their wallets over
the price of Premier League match tickets. With just three days to go until
the Hammers host Arsenal in what is one of the club's biggest home games of
the season, nearly 1,000 tickets remain unsold. The remaining tickets -
priced between £45 and £63 for adults and £25.50 and £34.50 for under-16s -
are on general sale, but many fans have decided to watch the fixture live on
SKY Sports television or the internet instead. And supporters' disquiet is
evident on on-line fans' forum WestHamOnline.net One, using the avatar Full
Claret Jacket, summed up a number of posts by writing: "I was priced out a
couple of seasons back. "I used to go every home and pretty much every away.
I only attended four games last year and streamed the rest. "I love going to
the games but it costs me a ton (£100) every time when you put in travel,
beer and food - even more if my kids want to go (which they often do) .
"This year I cannot justify the cost of club membership or the ticket prices
when there are so many other more pressing things to spend money on."
Another, Marshboy, said he was being forced to give up his season ticket due
to the spiralling cost. "I won't be renewing next season .15 years I've had
my season ticket and now I just can't afford football anymore."
West Ham have struggled to fill Upton Park this season, with less than
33,000 fans turning out for the Premier League fixtures against Wigan
Athletic and Blackburn Rovers, while just 10,055 showed up for the Carling
Cup second round win over League Two Macclesfield Town. And with many
supporters choosing to tighten their purse-strings in the current uncertain
financial environment, the Boleyn Ground is set to be under its 35,647
capacity again.

Stanislas settles reserve derby
WHUFC.com
Junior Stanislas was the match-winner as West Ham United reserves narrowly
beat Arsenal on Tuesday
21.10.2008

A solitary Junior Stanislas strike was enough to ensure West Ham United a
second consecutive home win in the Barclays Premier Reserve League South.

The young winger struck a superb volley in the 24th minute to give the home
side all three points after their 4-3 success against West Bromwich Albion
last month. Stanislas was one of only two players - Jordan Spence was the
other - in the starting lineup without first-team experience. Arsenal, in
contrast were dominated by talented teenagers, although in Fran Merida they
posed a significant midfield threat.

In front of the watching Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke, the likes of
Calum Davenport and James Collins in defence, Hayden Mullins and Luis Boa
Morte in midfield and Freddie Sears up front all took the chance to impress.
It was Stanislas who stole the limelight though with that sweet finish from
Walter Lopez's crossfield ball midway through the first half. Lopez was
replaced as a precaution at half-time after picking up a slight knock.

Reserve-team coach Alex Dyer was delighted with the attitude of the senior
professionals. "They played well," he said. "They came with a good attitude.
Even though they had a young team, the lads had the right approach and
played some good stuff. We got the goal at a good time and there were some
positive performances out there."

All the action as it happened as Alex Dyer's reserves met Arsenal on Tuesday
evening
21.10.2008

Barclays Premier Reserve League South
Bishop's Stortford FC, Woodside Park
Referee: D Sheldrake
Kick-off: 7pm

Full-time score: West Ham United 1-0 Arsenal

90min - A deserved three points for Alex Dyer's side, although the visitors
must take plenty of credit for competing well against their more experienced
hosts.

90min - Davenport concedes a late corner from Emmanuel-Thomas's cross. It is
cleared by N'Gala.

90min - We are playing three minutes of added time. Boa Morte shoots and
forces the keeper to concede a corner.

87min - Collison is the only West Ham United player in the referee's book,
summing up his endeavours this evening.

85min - Free-kick to Arsenal on the edge of the area. Bischoff takes but his
effort smashes into the wall.

84min - Great work by Boa Morte nearly gets Collison away.

83min - The game has lost its way somewhat. Tom Harvey is coming on for
Reid.

79min - Another change as Rui Fonte comes on for Randall.

78min - Collison fouls Merida on the edge of the area. The No8 gets up to
take it and drives his shot over the bar.

77min - There are 751 spectators here tonight. A great showing.

76min - Good play by Davenport and Mullins clears the danger. Both have been
solid tonight and done everything that has been required.

75min - Arsenal are biding their time at the moment. West Ham United still
look the more likely but in Merida the visitors have a constant threat.

72min - Arsenal have a corner but it comes to nothing and West Ham United
break quickly. Stokes gets put through but his shot is wide of the target.

70min - Simpson shoots from a central position but Lastuvka is well placed.

69min - United goalscorer Stanislas is off for Tony Stokes.

68min - Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is on for Steer, while Gilles Sunu has replaced
Murphy.

67min - Arsenal are readying a couple of substitutes. Collison feeds
Stanislas on the right wing but he is flagged offside as he puts the ball in
the net.

65min - Spence is doing well this half and almost gets Sears in behind but
the offside flag goes up.

64min - Sears and Boa Morte link up equally well but the latter's ball
through is just over-hit. Arsenal clear.

62min - Simpson and Merida combine before the former gets a half-chance in a
central position. He cannot keep it down though.

60min - Rodgers brings down Spence in an advanced position on the right
wing. Boa Morte's free-kick is cleared for a corner that the Portuguese will
take again. Collins rises to head for goal but it hits Gavin Hoyte.

59min - Merida jinks inside from the left wing before having a go with a low
shot that sails wide of Lastuvka's right-hand post.

57min - Rodgers is cautioned after a late tackle on Jordan Spence, who had
burst up the right flank.

56min - Free-kick to Arsenal after Merida is fouled by Reid. Mark Randall
takes it but it comes to nothing as Lastuvka comfortably collects.

55min - A lovely chipped ball through to Boa Morte from Stanislas ends with
the No8 working a shooting opportunity. The shot is too high, though.

54min - Coquelin is penalised for a foul on Boa Morte but the Portuguese
attacker just gets on with the play.

52min - Steer lofts the ball goalwards from the left but Lastuvka comes and
claims. Arsenal send out Rui Fonte to warm up.

50min - Davenport finds himself in an advanced position to the right of
goal. He crosses for Sears but the striker - who scored four in the last
home reserve outing - cannot connect.

49min - Collison shoots from range. It deflects off Gavin Hoyte and only
just misses rolling into the net with Mannone stranded.

48min - Stanislas takes a corner but Amaury Bischoff is able to clear.

46min - West Ham United get us under way. Bondz N'Gala is on for Walter
Lopez. It is a straight swap with the homegrown youngster going to
left-back.

HALF-TIME

45min - The referee blows his whistle to bring an end to an entertaining
half.

44min - Boa Morte and Sears combine before Collison has a go from 30 yards.
It never troubled Mannone.

43min - Mark Randall's long-range effort deflects behind off Davenport.
Merida takes the corner but Lastuvka collects.

43min - Murphy finds room and crosses again. Lastuvka claims the corner that
follows and from it Reid races away on the counter. He is stopped in his
tracks by Simpson.

40min - Murphy is inches away from equalising after great work by Simpson to
the right of the goal. That was close.

38min - Lopez tries his luck but Mannone makes the save.

37min - Arsenal have played their part in the contest and should have scored
when Francis Coquelin slid the ball to Murphy. His shot was low but Lastuvka
got down well to smother the ball.

34min - Mannone makes a good save from Sears's fierce shot. Another goal
seems likely.

32min - Collison goes close after working an opportunity on the edge of the
penalty area. The skipper's shot went low to the keeper's right.

30min - This is a great game and there is plenty of endeavour from both
teams. Luis Boa Morte has looked bright and the play of Lopez and Reid along
the left is particularly promising.

27min - After Sears just fails to connect close-in after Davenport's header
caused all sorts of trouble, Arsenal break quickly. Merida plays in Jay
Simpson but the No9 shoots wide.

26min - Reid and Sears play a neat one-two before Reid is upended just on
the corner of the penalty area.

25min - Reid finds room to the left of goal but blazes his shot over.

24min - GOAL! - Junior Stanislas opens the scoring with a terrific volley on
the right of the penalty area after Lopez's cross.

20min - A long ball from Davenport picks out Junior Stanislas on the left
wing. He slides it across for Sears who looks a certain scorer until a
last-ditch tackle. Davenport then rises to meet the corner but again the
ball is put behind by the visiting defence. From that corner, Mannone drops
the ball but Mullins cannot get a shot away.

18min - Merida has the ball in the net but the referee's assistant had his
flag up for offside long before.

17min - Fran Merida shoots over from long range. The Spanish youngster is
one of Arsene Wenger's most promising teenagers and he is already showing
plenty of attacking intent tonight.

14min - Hayden Mullins and then Luis Boa Morte slide in with well-timed
tackles. There is plenty of commitment from the experienced West Ham United
performers in front of the watching Gianfranco Zola, Steve Clarke and Kevin
Keen.

13min - There is a good crowd here at Woodside Park, despite the attraction
of the Champions League on television and the chilly weather.

11min - Rene Steer wins a corner that Mark Randall takes. Rodgers meets it
on the volley at the back post but it sails high and wide.

10min - Reid wins another corner following bright play by Lopez and captain
Jack Collison. Reid takes the set-piece but again Mannone is there to claim.

8min - Amaury Bischoff fires in a speculative effort from distance but it
never troubled Lastuvka as it sailed over the crossbar.

7min - Kyel Reid dances down the left wing before crossing but again Mannone
is equal to it.

6min - An excellent cross by Walter Lopez goes across goal and allows Sears
a chance at the far post. The No9's effort is cleared for a corner. Calum
Davenport gets up well to head but Arsenal are able to get the ball away.

3min - Paul Rodgers bursts forward for Arsenal but is closed down well.
Freddie Sears then gets a break on the right but his cross is straight at
Vito Mannone and the Arsenal No1 is able to avert the danger.

1min - Rhys Murphy forces an early save from Jan Lastuvka. From the
resulting corner, the Czech keeper claims comfortably.

1min - Arsenal get us under way.

Quashie loaned to Birmingham

Nigel Quashie has moved to Championship club Birmingham City on a
one-month's loan

West Ham United have allowed midfielder Nigel Quashie to join Birmingham
City on an initial month's loan.

The 30-year-old has played three times for the midlands club's reserve team
during a trial spell and was on the bench for their Championship fixture
against Crystal Palace on Tuesday night. Quashie has not played for West Ham
United since the 4-3 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in March 2007, having been
troubled by persistent foot problems. Speaking to the club's official
website, Birmingham manager Alex McLeish said: "He's got the type of steel

Forgotten man Nigel Quashie has joined Birmingham City on a month's loan.
The Hammers midfielder was signed by Alan Curbishley in January 2007 from
West Bromwich Albion for £1.5million but went on to make just eight
appearances for United before sustaining a foot injury which kept him out of
action for nearly 18 months. Although 30-year-old Quashie - whose last game
in claret and blue was back in March 2007 against Tottenham - has joined the
Championship outfit for just a month the deal comes with an option of
extending or making permanent the switch. With the ex-Scottish international
unlikely to ever feature for the Hammers again a cut-price deal, possibly a
free transfer, looks likely. City boss Alex McLeish, who has been running
the rule over Quashie in recent weeks at the Birmingham training ground said
tonight: "Quashie has looked good and he's definitely a player who will
enhance our squad. He's got a good attitude, and a winning attitude. You can
flippantly throw that term around, but I think he's got that type of steel
we require for the ambitions that we have. "He was out for so long that we
just needed to determine whether he can get through games week in and week
out without picking up niggly little injuries. It's not easy to establish
that before you sign somebody."

Quashie, whose loan deal was completed earlier in the day was a 73rd minute
substitute for Birmingham tonight in their 1-0 win over Neil Warnock's
struggling Crystal Palace.

Midfielder joins on an initial month's loan after training with the Blues

Nigel Quashie made his debut for Birmingham against Crystal Palace on
Tuesday after joining the Blues on an initial month's loan from West Ham.
The midfielder has been training with Alex McLeish's side for the last month
as he sought to regain fitness after missing last season with a long-term
foot injury. McLeish threw him into the action in the 1-0 victory over the
Eagles, which sent the Blues back to the top of the Championship, with the
30-year-old coming on as an 73rd minute substitute.
Speaking before the game, McLeish said the player would boost his resources
at St Andrews. He told the club's official website: "Quashie has looked good
and he's definitely a player who will enhance our squad. "He's got a good
attitude and a winning attitude. "You can flippantly throw that term around,

picking up niggly little injuries. "It's not easy to establish that before
you sign somebody. "I would think the fitness side of things has improved
over the past few weeks."

Arsenal 0-1 West Ham United - Reserves - Match Report
Young Guns.com

In the first of two Arsenal games this evening, Neil Banfield's Reserves
looked to collect their third win of the season, and maintain their push for
the title against a strong West Ham outfit at Bishop Stortford. News broke
before kick off that Nottingham Forest had signed midfielder James Dunne,
his replacement Francis Coquelin shrugged off injury to start in an
experiential diamond formation. Paul Rodgers and AbuOgogo had failed to win
contracts with Forest, they were both granted starts as Banfield made seven
changes to the team that beat Stoke. An injury before kick off meant Craig
Eastmond was replaced with the jet-lagged Rui Fonte, a difficult start
before the fixture had even kicked off.

Arsenal 0-1 West Ham United - Match Report

Arsenal won the kick off, and inside the first 90 seconds, Jan Lastuvka was
forced into action, tipping Rhys Murphy's side footed shot just wide. It
took until the second minute before the Hammers even got a touch of the
ball, via a throw in. A scrappy start saw Sears have the first attack from
the hosts, Rodgers responded with a powerful run out from defence, until
Murphy failed to hold the ball up. Lopez's flashed cross had Mannone
scrambling, a nervous first seven minutes for Arsenal. Rodgers and Randall
would then combine down the middle, the latter teed up Bischoff in the hole,
he jinked to the edge of the box before unleashing a powerful drive, inches
over. Steer began very well down the left, his drilled cross was deflected
behind for a corner, which Rodgers failed to connect with. The opening 15
minutes was spoilt by a lack of flow, caused by a careless waste of
possession, something both teams were guilty off. The Gunners would have the
ball in the net first, an explosive run from Jay Simpson saw him cut inside,
a released ball found Murphy on the left, his side footed cross presented a
tap in for Mérida, but Rhys was adjudged offside. Straight up the other end,
a brave challenge from Steer on Sears stopped a certain goal, Rene put his
body between the ball and the line, and came out on top. Davenport crashed
the resulting corner kick just wide, before Banfield's boys scored again.
Bischoff's intelligent play on the right won a set-piece, Randall lobbed a
cross over the Hammers back-line, Murphy volleyed home emphatically, yet the
offside flag cancelled out the superb finish. Moments later, another goal
would be scored, but this time it would count. Lopez found space on the left
flank, the Argentine's clipped ball was flicked into the net via the outside
of Junior Stanislas' right peg.

Goal - Junior Stanislas (24)

A dramatic tackle by Gavin Hoyte on Sears could have been a penalty, but
even the free kick was dangerous. Boa Morte's dipping delivery found
Davenport, Sears failed to connect with the re-bound from two yards. A swift
break saw Coquelin put Simpson in, Jay lashed into the stand from a
fantastic position. A delicious move from West Ham looked set to bring the
second, that was until Coquelin stamped the ball away from Mullins and
started a counter-attack of his own. Francis and Murphy worked an angle, the
Frenchman pulled it back to Bischoff 16 yards out, the delayed shot was
swiped away by Spence. Terrible play from Steer conceded possession to Boa
Morte in the middle, composure from the former Gunner created the space for
Sears, Mannone pulled off an athletic save to rescue the visitors.

Coquelin was again playing in the box-to-box role, he led a break out which
had 4 in Yellow against two in Maroon & Blue, Francis decided to play Murphy
in, and Lastuvka grabbed his tame side footed effort. Rhys had a second
chance to open his account seconds after, Simpson's menacing cross just
bypassing the England International. Randall's long ranger was about as
close as Arsenal came in the closing stages, a Half Time reshuffle was
certainly needed.

Half Time - Arsenal 0-1 West Ham United

Whilst Banfield was busy handing out instructions during the break, two
goals in as many minutes had the first team 2-0 up, how the Reserves needed
that sort of conversion rate. As the minutes ticked down, the concentration
drained away, Boa Morte should have made sealed it as the defensive issues
were exposed again. Ogogo was caught out down the right, Luis twisted and
turned to take Rodgers and Hoyte out of the equation, a dreadful finish
brought relief. Randall curled a great free kick into the arms of Lastuvka
on the hour mark, Mérida also had a pop at goal, neither brought a serious
goal threat.

The Gunners were holding on, but only just. Steer was forced to block
Davenport's header on the line, Mannone had gone missing. For everything
good that Rene had a done, his constant wasting of valuable possession was
extremely harmful. Gilles Sunu had proved superb when replacing Bischoff
against Stoke, and although he was warming up, the unpredictable Jay
Emmanuel-Thomas was brought on, replacing Rene Steer. Moments later Murphy's
night was over, and finally Sunu was brought into the action.

Bischoff - Simpson
Sunu - Mérida - Randall - Coquelin
Thomas - Rodgers - Hoyte - Ogogo
Mannone

Gilou's flowing run from left to right had West Ham backing off, the ball
popped out to Simpson who was close to lobbing the advancing 'keeper. A bad
decision from Randall ended up in a swift break, only a shocking finish from
Tony Stokes spared the blushes. With 15 minutes left, it was needs must. Rui
Fonte, a late inclusion after an injury to Craig Eastmond, was drafted on
having only just returned to London after playing and scoring for Portugal's
Under 19's. The change nearly had an instant impact, Fonte, Sunu and Simpson
switched the play to the right, the latter ruined the move with his average
cut back. Mannone's excellent challenge showed full commitment as Stokes was
put through again, and then a clumsy foul led to an Arsenal free-kick in Rui
Fonte's territory. Thomas and Bischoff both talked about the chance, but
Mérida took it, and Davenport managed to get his body in the way.

It would be the last big opportunity of the second period, experienced
counted in the end and West Ham walked away with the points. Positives come
in the form of Bischoff's 90 minutes, and Mannone's solid performance, but
there certainly leaves a lot to be worked on.

Stunning Junior strike earns Irons a win over the Gunners
10:22pm Tuesday 21st October 2008
Guardian Series
West Ham 1 Arsenal 0 (Barclays Premier Reserve League - South)

JUNIOR Stanislas gave boss Gianfranco Zola a reminder of his huge promise
with a stunning strike that saw West Ham reserves edge out Arsenal reserves
tonight.
In front of the watching Zola and assistant Steve Clarke, the lively winger
thumped home the winner on 24 minutes. His 20-yard volley, hit first time
from Kyel Reid's crossfield pass, was the highlight of a hugely entertaining
Barclays Premier Reserve League South encounter played in front of a
751-strong crowd at Bishop's Stortford's Woodside Park. The first half in
particular saw both sides miss a hatful of clear-cut chances. For the Irons
- who used the match to field a host of first teamers - James Collins and
Calum Davenport both had headers cleared off the goalline, while Jack
Collison saw his effort go just wide of the post. Freddie Sears and Walter
Lopez also saw drives well saved by Gunners stopper Vito Mannone. However,
they didn't have it all their own way. Rhys Murphy's first minute was
deflected just wide at the other end, while Jay Simpson flashed an effort
across the face of goal. Highly-rated Spanish youngster Fran Merida had the
ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. The game slowed after thee
break although both sides still had chances. Collison's deflected effort
went just wide and Sears just failed to connect with Davenport's cross. Luis
Boa Morte blasted high and wide after working a good shooting opportunity,
while Tony Stokes burst through on goal late on but fluffed his lines to
fire well wide. In the end, one was enough for the Hammers' second string to
claim back to back home wins. Next up for Alex Dyer's men is a trip to
Tottenham Hotspur reserves on November 3.

West Ham: Lastuvka, Spence, Davenport, Collins, Lopez (N'Gala 45), Mullins,
Collison, Boa Morte, Stanislas (Stokes 69), Sears, Reid (Harvey 83). Subs:
Loveday, Eyjolfsson.

EXCLUSIVE - Stanislas delight as wonder-goal secures reserve victory
10:27pm Tuesday 21st October 2008

JUNIOR Stanislas gave Gianfranco Zola a glimpse of his undoubted talent by
firing West Ham United's reserves to an entertaining 1-0 victory over
Arsenal on Tuesday night. The England Under-19 international winger slammed
home a spectacular 20-yard volley to secure a second Barclays Premier
Reserve League South win of the season for the Hammers. Stanislas, in
impressive form for Alex Dyer's second string this season, clinically
dispatched Walter Lopez's deep cross after 24 minutes to warm a 751-strong
crowd at Bishop's Stortford's chilly Woodside Park. "It's my first of the
season so I was well-pleased with that. Now I just want to keep banging them
in," said goalscorer Stanislas. "It was nice to put on a show in front of
the manager and (assistant Steve) Clarkey as well. "I've had a little niggly
knee injury as well, so it was good to be able to show them what I can do.
Hopefully now I can kick on a bit. "Hopefully I can get a first-team
opportunity soon. Maybe before I wasn't consistent but now I've played a few
good games in a row so I want to keep that going."
The teenager's goal was the highlight of an enthralling game in which both
sides passed up a plethora of clear-cut opportunities. For the hosts, James
Collins and Calum Davenport both saw powerful headers cleared off the line
either side of Stanislas's strike, while Jack Collison and Kyel Reid fired
long-range shots narrowly off-target. Striker Freddie Sears and left-back
Walter Lopez were also in lively form, forcing Gunners' goalkeeper Vito
Mannone into a pair of smart saves shortly before half-time. A youthful
Arsenal played their part in proceedings too, with Jay Simpson firing a
cross-shot inches wide of Jan Lastuvka's goal, while Spanish midfielder Fran
Merida had a tap-in chalked off for offside. The second half was a more
sedate affair, but an unmarked Luis Boa Morte still found time to curl a
woeful effort over Mannone's crossbar, while Tony Stokes fired wide after
being sent clear by Sears. But the evening clearly belonged to Stanislas,
who will surely have impressed the watching Irons' manager and the host of
lower-league scouts interested in signing the forward on loan.

West Ham United: (4-3-2-1) Lastuvka, Spence, Lopez (N'Gala 46), Davenport,
Collins, Mullins, Collison, Boa Morte, Stanislas (Stokes 69), Reid (Harvey
82), Sears. Unused subs: Loveday, Eyjolfsson.
