The manager will have Frederic Piquionne and Robbie Keane in his plans for
Saturday's big game
31.03.2011
Avram Grant is ready for the challenge of facing Manchester United on
Saturday lunchtime and was in upbeat mood when facing the press on Thursday.
There was positive team news while he was full of praise for Scott Parker.
Avram on team news after the international breaks...
"The squad is in good shape. For us the injury situation is better. Freddie
Piquionne is back and Robbie Keane is available. Of course we wanted to play
last Saturday because we were in good momentum but we are looking forward to
the game on Saturday. "International breaks are not good for the clubs
because there are so many Premier League players in international teams so
we don't like it so much. But these are the fixtures and we need to respect
them. "From our point of view for the moment it looks like everybody is fit
but with West Ham you never know."
Avram on Scott Parker finally getting recognition...
"I spoke about this from the beginning of the season because if you look at
the midfield England play and you look at Scott Parker he maybe is the best
midfielder this season. "He is a good lad, a positive lad who is good for
the team. "He is doing a job that sometimes some other players don't like to
do so much. I am very pleased he has got the recognition because for me it
needed to be before. "I don't want to talk about private matters but you can
understand how he is feeling from a personal point of view. For the football
he was available for us all the time. This season Scott Parker has played
when he was injured and when he had the problems we have talked about. He is
a very special guy, a special character and he is good for the team."
Avram on Saturday's game...
"We don't have a fully fit squad but it is more than we are used to. At West
Ham when we have just two players injured it looks like there is none
because you are used to ten or eleven injuries. Man United are a very good
team, in every position they have three very good players. They are first
place in the league and respect to them. "We need to think about ourselves.
In our last seven games we lost only one, we have had a lot of improvement.
I think if you compare the second half of the season with the first half we
have improved more than 50 per cent and we want to continue. "I am sure all
the teams are thinking the same, everyone can be relegated or finish
eleventh. We are only thinking about ourselves. We have showed many good
things and we can do it. It will be tough, it is not easy but if you look at
us, we are not easy to play."
Avram on the secret of beating Man United after a 4-0 cup success...
"The secret is to score one more goal but this is top secret. Don't tell
anyone...Man United is a very good team, they can beat anyone but we can
cause them problems. What happened in the Carling Cup was unique. To beat
Man United 4-0 in an official competition is something we all remember."
Avram on experienced players being key for the run-in...
"It is very important, especially if they are positive players. We have seen
improvements at both ends of the pitch in this way."
Avram on the potential at the club...
"First we have to stay in the league. As I said when I came here, we have a
vision and part of this is to be in the top third in the league. I agree
that this team is a good team that can look forward and do better and
better."
Avram on the difference made by Thomas Hitzlsperger...
"He is a very good player and a good person. A top professional and we took
him at the beginning of the season. He was our first signing in the summer,
we saw he can add a lot. He has everything and we missed him a lot. Now we
are playing like we did last summer. His contribution you can see, it is
good but he can do better. We know if we had Thomas we would have had more
points but this is the situation."
Avram on defensive strength...
"It is important we have improved on all aspects. We are scoring more goals
as well. Part of our target was to keep as many clean sheets. Rob Green and
the back four have done a very good job lately. We are not conceding against
good teams."
Avram on the importance of the final four home games...
"We have improved in away games and we are not afraid to go away. It is
always good to play at home, though. The supporters are behind us, they are
very good and we feel good with them."
Avram on setting his players' targets...
"We have spoken more about being consistent and being balanced between
defensive and offensive. We speak about it, we adjust training. I don't
believe so much in targets. Last year 35 points, West Ham stayed in the
league, 35 was enough the season before that and it was 38 before that. This
year it will be at least 40. There is not one manager who can know how many
points are needed to stay in the league."

Team spirit inspires Cole
WHUFC.com
He may be banging in the goals but Carlton Cole is anything but complacent
31.03.2011
Carlton Cole has said the visit of Manchester United is the first of eight
"cup finals" facing the Hammers between now and the end of the season. The
in-form striker is hoping to face the Red Devils on Saturday lunchtime but
faces a battle for a starting berth. Avram Grant is set to have a fully-fit
complement of forwards to choose from. After a goalless draw at Tottenham
Hotspur a fortnight ago, Cole is hoping to add to his run of six goals in
ten games this weekend but there is plenty of competition for places. Demba
Ba and Robbie Keane returned from international football with goals and
games under their belt, while Frederic Piquionne is back in training. "Every
game from now to the end of the season is a cup final for us," said Cole.
"We need to show the same endeavour and the same spirit we showed at
Tottenham. "The team spirit was amazing at White Hart Lane and that's what
we really need to work with to get the results. Then the quality will shine
through."
Thinking back to that last run-out, Cole said the formula for a repeat
showing against Manchester United was there to follow. "It was a wonderful
game. You just need to put in the hard work and the luck will be there with
you. All the boys really tried hard and we need to show that again. We are
building on our performances and we are all working towards moving the club
up the table as quickly as possible."

Moncur eyes win double
WHUFC.com
George Moncur is ready to shine for club and country over the upcoming
fortnight
30.03.2011
George Moncur has already made great strides forward during the 2010/11
season, but April could see the midfielder play arguably the two biggest
matches of his short career so far. The 17-year-old will hope to be involved
when West Ham United host Manchester United in the Barclays Premier Reserve
League on Friday afternoon. On 12 April, Moncur could make his second
international appearance when England's Under-18s take on Italy in the town
of Carpi. Before he heads off to represent his country, Moncur is eager to
get one over on a Red Devils side that is likely to contain many of the
players who scored a 1-0 FA Youth Cup fourth-round victory over the Hammers
back in December. "It's been a good year. Every time I go on the pitch I try
to do the right thing and try to do well. Most of the time, it's come off,
so that's been good. "It would be nice to get one back over them after the
FA Youth Cup because we should have got something out of that game. We
played well, especially in the second half, but we were a bit unlucky."
Looking forward to his international date, Moncur is excited about the
prospect of earning his second U18 cap after making a successful debut as a
substitute in a 3-0 friendly win over Poland in November. "It's a good
achievement and I'm hoping to do well when I go over to Italy with the
squad, like I try to do every week for West Ham. "I played for half-an-hour
or so last time and it was a great feeling to get on to the pitch and wear
the England shirt for the first time. I hope to get on the ball and do what
I did in my first game, which was set up a goal. "It's quite a big game for
us, as England versus Italy always is. We just need to go there with a good,
positive mentality and I'm sure we can win."
With England contesting UEFA European U19 Championship Elite Round
qualifiers against Montenegro, Switzerland and Spain in May and June, Moncur
is hoping to catch the eye. "Hopefully I can put my stamp down when I play
and get into the Under-19 squad. "I feel a bit different training with
England than I do training with the lads at West Ham as they are obviously
the best players in the country and it's a great experience. "The manager
Noel Blake has talked me through what he expects of me and what he wants me
to improve. "I think the team is strong overall. They are obviously all good
players and fans should look out for Chuks Aneke from Arsenal and Conor
Coady from Liverpool."

MATCH PREVIEW
Manchester United return to the scene of their biggest defeat of the season
for a match with huge repercussions at the top and bottom of the table. Sir
Alex Ferguson's men saw their invincible aura shattered when they were
humbled 4-0 in November's Carling Cup quarter-final at Upton Park, and the
manager will be desperate to avoid a third defeat in four outings as United
look to strengthen their grip on a record 19th title.
For West Ham, three points is a must as they scrap to survive in the top
flight. Avram Grant's side have breathed new life into a campaign that
appeared to be dead and buried, hauling themselves out of the relegation
zone with a four-match unbeaten run.
Despite that Carling Cup defeat, Manchester United have dominated recent
league meetings between these sides, winning their last five encounters
without conceding a goal. However, they have struggled on their travels this
season and have managed just one victory in the capital in their last five
attempts.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
. Manchester United have won the last five Premier League games against West
Ham without conceding a goal.
. But their most recent meeting came in November's Carling Cup

Park.
. Wayne Rooney has scored five goals in eight Premier League games for
United against the Hammers. The England striker is two short of 100 Premier
League goals for United.
West Ham
. The in-form Hammers have scored 15 times in their last six league and cup
matches.
. They have lost just one of their last seven Premier League matches - a 1-0
home defeat to Birmingham City on 6 February.
. Their next defeat will be their 250th in the Premier League.
. Carlton Cole could make the 250th appearance of his club career.
Man Utd
. Sir Alex Ferguson's men have only won four of their last 15 Premier League
away games.
. They have only won one of their last five Premier League games in London,
and only five of the last 19.

Boleyn On The Move
KUMB.com
Filed: Thursday, 31st March 2011
By: Staff Writer No.2
The owners of the Boleyn Tavern have come up with a novel way to ensure the
pub's survival after the club moves to the Olympic Stadium in 2014.
The whole pub is to be demolished and moved brick by brick to a site in the
Olympic Village close to the new ground. A spokesman for the pub's owners
told us "it wouldn't be financially viable for us to keep the pub open after
the club moves and, unless we do something, the building would end up being
boarded up and left to rot".
Despite its lack of a decent real ale, the pub is listed in CAMRA guides for
its Victorian architecture and interior and it is anticipated that the
project will be overseen by pub experts from the beer drinkers' pressure
group to ensure that the authenticity of the pub's atmosphere is maintained.
The CAMRA City and East London Branch secretary told us: "We will be keeping
a close eye on the things and we'll resist any attempts by the owners to
update the interior once the move to Stratford is complete. Some of the
carpets in there must have been laid down when the pub first opened and as
such form a vital part of East London history, so we will be insisting that
they stay."
The down side to the move is that the pub plans to close down at the end of
the current season in order that the move can be completed in time for the
Olympic opening ceremony in 2012. The pub's owner told us "we will need to
get the pub on to the new site by August 2012 to take advantage of the
influx of sports fans, as well as those who like synchronised swimming.
Also, given the amount of work required to convert the stadium into a
football ground we'd have had trouble booking a low-loader to take the
bricks over there if we left it until nearer the time the club moves". He
quipped "Since it takes forever for our customers to get served on matchdays
anyway we're not sure that too many will notice a further two year delay!"
It is thought that plans to undertake a similar project with other matchday
watering holes were considered but were ditched over technical
considerations. The Black Lion's outside lavatory was deemed to be "not in
keeping" with the proposed new surroundings whilst it was thought that the
building housing the Earl of Wakefield wouldn't survive the removal of the
old wallpaper.

Elm agent denies talks
Links with rival clubs rejected

Rasmus Elm's agent insists he has not talked with any clubs about a possible
summer move. The Sweden international is currently plying his trade for AZ
Alkmaar and his performances have been drawing a great deal of attention.
Elm rejected a host of clubs to join AZ in 2009 and his agent Patrick Moerk
insists he will not necessarily be moving on this summer. Reports had
claimed that talks had already taken place with West Ham and Werder Bremen,
but Moerk insists that is not true.
"There are many clubs in Europe who have told me that I should call when Elm
is ready to move," Moerk told Sportbladet. "He is enjoying himself and does
not feel that he is finished with Dutch football. "He is choosing his clubs
very carefully."

Grant - 40 points a minimum
Hammers boss focused on securing survival
Last updated: 31st March 2011
SSN
Avram Grant has not set a specific target for survival but has predicted
that teams will need at least 40 points to avoid relegation. West Ham were
written off in many quarters following a dismal start to the Premier League
season but have found some impressive form over the past few weeks to raise
hopes of a great escape.
They are just above the drop zone going into Saturday's home clash with
league leaders Manchester United, and Grant is looking for another good
performance.
He is focused on trying to collect as many points as he can from each match
but accepts the Hammers will have to increase their current tally of 32 by
at least eight to have any chance of staying up. "We have spoken about being
more consistent in our games and making a good balance between defence and
offence," he said. "We have also talked about scoring more goals and
conceding less goals and about how we do it. We train different too. "But I
don't believe in [having a points target] so much because last year West Ham
stayed in the league with 35 points.
Nobody knows
"The year before it was 35, two years before it was 38 and this season I
think it will be 40 and more. "We want to take as many points as we can and
then who knows, nobody knows. "I don't think one manager knows how many
points will be enough to stay in the league." Just eight points separate
Sunderland in ninth spot and bottom-placed Wigan, and Grant admits there is
some comfort in knowing so many teams are involved in the dogfight. "We have
thought about this but I am sure other teams are thinking the same thing,"
he said. "Every team can be relegated and every team can be in 11th place at
the end of the season, but we are only thinking about ourselves. "I think we
showed many good things even in the first half of the season and now things
are better, we are more consistent. "If we only think about ourselves we can
do it. It will be tough, it is not easy and we don't have easy games but
also if you look at our games we are not an easy team to beat."
United respect
The Hammers can welcome back Frederic Piquionne and Robbie Keane from injury
this weekend as Grant looks for a repeat of the Carling Cup upset against
Sir Alex Ferguson's side from earlier this season. The Red Devils head to
East London beset with injuries, although Grant has rejected the notion that
this will be a big advantage to West Ham. "We don't have a fully-fit squad
but we have more than we used to," he added. "When West Ham have two or
three players injured it looks like there are no injuries because you are
used to 10 or 11 injuries. "But United are a very good team. In any position
they have two or three very good players. They are in the first place in the
league and we fully respect them, but we need to think about ourselves.
"From the last seven games I think we have lost only one and we have
improved a lot. "I have not seen the statistics but if you compare the
second half of the league [season] to the first I think we have improved
more than 50 per cent and we want to continue with this."

Parker pick pleases Grant
Hammers boss reckons captain's international role is long overdue
By Ben Collins Last updated: 31st March 2011
SSN
West Ham manager Avram Grant feels it is about time for Scott Parker to be
earning regular international recognition. The Hammers midfielder became the
first England player to earn his first four caps playing for different clubs
when he came off the bench in last month's friendly in Denmark. Parker's
continued good form for the Hammers saw him named in the starting line-up
for Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifying win in Wales and the 30-year-old
justified his selection with an impressive performance. Parker is now set to
remain a regular in the England squad but Grant feels that is long overdue
given the consistency he has shown at Upton Park since signing from
Newcastle in 2007. "I've spoken about this from the beginning of the
season," Grant told Sky Sports News. "If you look at the midfielders playing
in England, Scott Parker is maybe the best midfielder this season.
Deserved
"He's a good lad, he's a positive lad, and he's good for the team. He's
doing a job that sometimes other players don't like to do so much and I'm
very pleased he's getting the recognition. "For me, it's normal. It should
have come before." Parker is in the running to be named Footballer of the
Year having led by example during West Ham's battle to beat the drop. The
former Charlton and Chelsea man has missed just two Premier League games so
far, not only playing through the pain barrier but also playing on after his
father passed away earlier this month. "He was available for us all the
time," Grant explained. "This season he's played with us when he was injured
and his other problems. "He's a very special guy, a special character and
he's good for the team."
Parker was one of several West Ham players away on international duty but
Grant has no injuries to report as his side returns to league action at home
to leaders Manchester United on Saturday. Of course, we wanted to play last
Saturday because we had good momentum but that was the (international)
fixture and we're looking forward to the game on Saturday," added Grant.
"From our point of view, at the moment it looks like everyone is fit, but at
West Ham you never know!"

Hitz aims for cup repeat
German midfielder insists Hammers can upset United again
Last updated: 31st March 2011
SSN
Thomas Hitzlsperger has pointed to West Ham's Carling Cup tie with
Manchester United as they prepare to host the Premier League leaders on
Saturday. United may have fielded a weakened line-up in the quarter-final
clash back in November but the manner of West Ham's victory shocked many.
The Hammers won 4-0 to dump United out of the competition and inflict their
first defeat of the season. Sir Alex Ferguson's men remain on course for the
Premier League title, though, and will travel to Upton Park looking to
extend their five-point lead. But Hitzlsperger, who was injured for the
November clash, has urged the Hammers to look to that quarter-final game for
further inspiration. "I am just looking back to the Carling Cup game, that
was a fantastic game for us," he told the East London Advertiser. "I saw
that one and it was a fabulous performance, so if we look back on that one,
we know that we can beat them if we are playing to our strengths. "But they
are the best team in the country at the moment and it won't be an easy
afternoon. "I am in a good mood, so are the other players and therefore it
should be a good afternoon," added the Germany international.
Confidence
"Confidence is quite high at the moment. Recent results have been good apart
from the FA Cup game at Stoke, so therefore the atmosphere is quite good and
hopefully it will be the same after the game on Saturday." West Ham have
boosted their survival hopes by winning their last two home games to climb
out of the drop zone on goal difference. Hitzlsperger's return from injury
has been a major factor in the Hammers' revival, with the quarter-final
defeat at Stoke the only time the former Lazio midfielder has been on the
losing side in five games. And the 28-year-old has become an instant hero
amongst the Hammers' faithful for his composure on the ball and his superb
shooting ability, which has already produced two goals. "I'm happy with the
way it is going after such a long injury, I didn't really know what to
expect," he said. "But in four of the games I have played 90 minutes, and in
the other one 70 minutes, so it is more than I expected to be fair. "I'm
quite happy with the way things are going. I've scored goals and set a few
up so I couldn't have dreamed of a better start really, but there is still a
long way to go and plenty of space to improve and I am working on that and
hopefully by the end of the season I can get even better and help the team
to stay up."

We Av had some real shockers

AVRAM GRANT reckons referees have dumped West Ham in the relegation
dogfight. The Hammers boss believes his team have suffered more than anyone
in the Premier League and would be 10 points better off but for officials'
blunders. Grant, who faces an FA improper conduct charge next week, said:
"The decisions have gone against us too many times. "If they were right we
would now have at least 10 more points. "I'm not saying they do it on
purpose. But the game's much quicker than even five years ago. "Refs make
mistakes, they're not computers but they need to accept a manager is allowed
to say they are wrong. "We've suffered more than any other side from
decisions this season." Grant appears before an FA disciplinary committee on
Monday after slating ref Mike Jones' performance in the FA Cup defeat at
Stoke.

We must Hammer out results
Published: 31 Mar 2011

AVRAM GRANT believes West Ham will need to pick up more than 40 points to
avoid relegation. The Hammers are currently clear of the drop zone on goal
difference alone with eight games to play. They already have 32 points on
the board but Grant has refused to set a total to guarantee safety. He said:
"We have spoken about being more consistent in our games and making a good
balance between defence and offence. "We have also talked about scoring more
goals and conceding less goals and about how we do it. We train different

Grant: Ref gaffes have cost us 10 points
Published 23:00 31/03/11 By Neil McLeman
The Mirror
Avram Grant believes West Ham have suffered more dodgy decisions than
Manchester United this season. The Irons boss reckons referees have cost his
side 10 points - the difference between fighting relegation and challenging
for a place in Europe. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said yesterday the
Premier League leaders had suffered "terrible decisions" against Chelsea.
The Scot is now serving a five-match ban for his criticism of ref Martin
Atkinson after his side's defeat at Stamford Bridge. Grant faces an FA
hearing for improper conduct on Monday after suggesting Mike Jones favoured
Stoke in West Ham's FA Cup quarter-final loss.
But the manager insisted a run of bad calls earlier in the season -
especially a Frederic Piquionne "winning goal" at Molineux that was wrongly
disallowed for handball - have cost his side more at the other end of the
table. West Ham are at home to United tomorrow, and Grant said: "We have
suffered more than any other team from decisions, as everyone has seen on
television. "The decision was against us too many times. If the decision was
right, we would have had at least 10 points more. "This is part of the game.
You can accept one decision that was for us, but most of the decisions was
against us. "Everyone understands what Alex said and what he spoke about in
the last games. I don't know about Manchester United, I think about us."
Grant said referees needed extra help to make the right calls - and insisted
they did not take criticism personally. "I am not saying that one referee
did it on purpose," he said. "But the game is much quicker. We need to help
the referee so that they can do their job better. "But the refs take it too
personally sometimes. When the ref makes a mistake it's OK, it's part of the
game, they're not computers. "So they need to accept that managers, as long
as they do not question the integrity of the ref, can say if the referee was
wrong or not."
