Zola takes heart from late show
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola is hoping his side can build on an encouraging second half
display at Old Trafford
30.10.2008

Gianfranco Zola hopes that the promising second half display against
Manchester United can act as a catalyst for his side to start picking up the
points that recent performances have merited.

Two first-half strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo sealed a victory for the
reigning Barclays Premier League champions on Wednesday, but it was a
combative second period which produced several good opportunities for the
visitors that gave plenty of optimism for the manager, which he will take
into Saturday's game up at Middlesbrough.

Zola said: "I was very happy with the team in the second half and I told
them so. That is now a starting point for us. We knew that it was going to
be hard but we perhaps made it even harder for ourselves.

"We gave Manchester United all the respect that we needed to, but at the
same time we wanted to try and win the game. They've got fantastic players
but we can be as good as them. In this game however, we couldn't do that,
it's understandable because they're a great team in great form."

"The game was the complete opposite to our previous three games where we
started well. They will take every single opportunity and that was our
mistake."

The visitor's plight was not helped when Valon Behrami was stretchered off
with a calf injury on the stroke of half-time, meaning Zola had to shuffle
his midfield pack once more.

The Swiss international was replaced by Luis Boa Morte, one of three
substitutes that impressed the manager. He said: "The players who came on
for the second half - Jack Collison, Luis Boa Morte and Freddie Sears - did
very well and I'm pleased with them. It's a real pity that we're missing
some important players but we just have to get on with it and do our best."

Zola is confident in a change in fortunes, starting with the visit to the
Riverside to face Middlesbrough on Saturday, before home matches against
Everton and Portsmouth. "I know the value of my players and I'm not worried
at all. My concern is that they don't get too frustrated. I totally believe
in them and I have so much faith in their qualities for us. I am sure this
spell is going to be over soon."

Middlesbrough have only beaten West Ham United on two occasions in the last
nine Barclays Premier League meetings. Scott Parker scored the winner as
United won 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium last season to make it three
successive wins over Gareth Southgate's side.

The visitors are 5/2 with online bookmaker JAXX to win on Teesside again as
they look to end a run of four successive defeats by winning their second
away game of the season.

Middlesbrough, who are a point and two places above their 11th-placed
guests, are available at 11/10 to record their fourth home win of the
season. West Ham United have not been involved in a draw this season and
just one of Middlesbrough's ten games have ended in a stalemate. The odds
for a draw on Saturday are 23/10.

Five of the last seven league games between the two sides have seen one or
other team fail to score. It is 1/4 that the hosts find the net at any stage
- as they have done against their guests in their ten meetings at the
Riverside. It is 11/5 that Gareth Southgate's side do not beat Robert Green.
It is 2/5 that the West Ham United score, while the odds against them
netting are 6/4. The odds for both teams to score are 3/4 and it is 17/20
that one or other fails to find the net.

The last two meetings have seen three goals scored in total. JAXX offer odds
on whether or not a match will contain more or less than 2.5 goals. The odds
for more than 2.5 goals scored in Saturday's fixture are 17/20, while it is
3/4 that there will be fewer than three goals in the game.

West Ham United have won all four league matches in which they have led at
half-time and you can bet on the half-time result at JAXX. The east London
side are 27/10 to be in front at half-time, while it is 15/4 that they are
leading at half-time and full-time. The odds for a draw at half-time and
West Ham United to be in front at the final whistle are 6/1.

When West Ham United have scored the first goal in the game this season,
they have gone on to win every time. In contrast, they have scored the last
goal just once. The odds for Gianfranco Zola's side to score first are 9/10,
while it is 5/4 that they score the last goal on Saturday.

West Ham United are 11/20 when receiving a mythical goal start on the
Handicap, but for the pessimistic, Middlesbrough can be backed at 57/20 to
win by two clear goals or more. The draw on the Handicap is on offer at
51/20.

Don't forget, JAXX offer a plethora of markets for every West Ham United
game. There are also a number of exclusive Season Specials.

That is not all either - when you register with JAXX, place your first bet
and they will give you a free matching bet to the value of your own stake,
up to £25. For example, if your first bet is £25, they will double it and
give you another £25 to bet absolutely free! Your free bet will be credited

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Gianfranco Zola is facing the first real test of his embryonic managerial
career. He must select a West Ham side to play Middlesbrough that will halt
a four-match losing run.

The Hammers went down 2-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday,
while Middlesbrough were beating Manchester City 2-0 at the Riverside; only
their second win in seven league outings.

Middlesbrough have gained more home Premier League points against West Ham
than against any other club; 25, from eight wins and a draw in 10 meetings
on Teesside.

But the only occasion 'Boro did not take any points off the Hammers in a
home Premier League clash was last season's corresponding fixture, when a
last minute goal from Scott Parker stole all three points for the Londoners.

Hammers snatch narrow win

A West Ham United XI has beaten Southend United's reserves in a
specially-arranged behind-closed-doors fixture at Chadwell Heath this
afternoon.

The Hammers - featuring the likes of Carlton Cole, Lucas Neill and Freddie
Sears - narrowly beat the Shrimpers 2-1 despite going behind early on to a
Charles Ademeno effort.

But two goals just ahead of the half time break were enough to see the
Hammers, watched by Gianfranco Zola, through to victory.

Club captain Lucas Neill has missed United's last two fixtures against
Arsenal and Manchester United with a virus, whilst Carlton Cole is out until
mid-November through suspension after being sent off in the closing stages
of Sunday's 2-0 derby defeat.

Zola will also be hoping to have Scott Parker back in his squad for this
weekend's visit to Middlesbrough, although Mark Noble and Valon Behrami -
injured during last night's defeat at Old Trafford - will definitely miss
out.

Southend United: Mildenhall, Harvey, Whittaker, Reynolds, Herd, Henry,
Lokando, O'Keefe, Forshaw, Ademeno, Furlong.

Midfielder tempted by Hammers move

St Patricks Athletic midfielder Keith Fahey says he would be tempted by a
move to the Premier League. The Irish midfielder was watched by United
scouts recently and it was claimed that a deal to bring the 26-year-old to
East London had been done - something later furiously denied by Fahey's
current boss, Johnny McDonnell who claimed that "we have had no bids for
Keith." But Fahey himself says that he would be keen on a return to the
Premier League, having spent time at both Arsenal and Aston Villa in his
younger days. "I would like to move on," he said. "I don't think I can do
any more at Pats. I would like to move on if someone comes across.
"There is speculation but I know as much as you. There are a couple of
things going on. Hopefully something will happen towards the transfer
window." Fahey, who began his career as a trainee with Arsenal has also been
linked with Sunderland, Reading and Derby.

Vinny's Manchester United Report
West Ham Online
Vinny - Thu Oct 30 2008

Manchester United 2 West Ham United 0

West Ham were brushed aside by Champions Manchester United with two first
half goals sealing the victory but anyone who saw the game will know it was
not even that close as we were outclassed and looked every bit a side who
had lost their previous three games.

It is a difficult game to express much opinion about as we were playing a
team who are miles better than us. Of course we are not expected to win a
game like this but it is disappointing to see that we cannot even compete.

For me the formation we started with was all wrong and to have two
lightweight players such as Etherington and Di Michele as part of a three
man attack was always asking for trouble.

Manchester United sliced through our midfield and although they score two,
it should have been more. Luckily for us they took the foot off the gas in
the second half which saw us see a lot of the ball, but no one could do
anything with it and the final ball was always poor.

Gianfranco Zola made a few changes from the defeat against Arsenal on
Sunday. In midfield, Scott Parker was missing and was replaced by Valon
Behrami. Up front Carlton Cole was suspended and replaced by Matthew
Etherington.

The hosts were coming off the back of a frustrating result at Everton from
the weekend and were obviously looking to take their frustrations out on us
from the start. They dominated the first half and should have had their
first as early as the second minute when a cross from the right found
Berbatov but his shot was deflected over.

On the left hand side Nani was taking the piss out of Faubert at every
attempt and nearly grabbed a goal when a shot across the face of goal just
missed the post.

Going to Old Trafford and expecting to just soak up the pressure and counter
attack rarely work but this is the stall we set out and although we did get
the ball into some good positions on the break, we do not possess anywhere
near the quality to pick out a player in the box.

Our only half chance in the first period came from a good run from
Etherington through the middle as things opened up but his left foot shot
was tame when if it had have really got hold of it we may have been looking
at a goal.

Berbatov nearly opened the scoring when his effort was cleared off the line
by Upson but the first goal was coming and on the 13th minute it did arrive
when our failure to clear the ball eventually was crossed back into the area
by Nani and recently crowned World Player of the year Ronaldo swept the ball
past Green.

This did not deter the 1,900 West Ham fans who had made the long trip. With
the traffic despite setting off at 2.30pm I arrived with just five minutes
to go before kick off. If there was anything good to come out of this game
it was the fans who sung from beginning to end.

An equaliser should have been found when Behrami was put through down the
right by a good pass from Mullins but the Swiss international could not pick
out a West Ham player in the area when he had so much time.

Behrami was taken out by Patrice Evra moments later in a scathing tackle
which could have seen the Manchester United left back get more than the
yellow card he received.

Around the half hour mark the home side doubled their lead and effectively
ended the game (if it wasn't over already). Anderson played an excellent
pass over the top for Berbatov who showed some world class skill to skip
past Collins and cross for Ronaldo to beat everyone to the ball and score
his second.

Another challenge by Evra on Behrami saw the returning midfielder stretched
off in what looks like another injury which will keep him out. On in his
place was Luis Boa Morte.

It should have been 3-0 but for a brilliant flying save from Robert Green
after former Hammer Carlos Tevez head towards goal from point blank range.

Half time came and we could be thankful in one way that it was not more than
two but we knew that it was over and it would surely be damage limitation in
the second half.

Zola made one change at half time as he replaced Etherington with Jack
Collison. This saw us go to a 4-4-2 although how Di Michele was allowed to
stay on the pitch still baffles me.

We saw a lot of the ball in this second half with only Luis Boa Morte
looking positive going forward. People may still boo him but his effort in
this second half was excellent.

Bellamy saw a quick thinking effort from a free kick nearly embarrass the
Manchester United keeper Kuszczak with a 35 yard free kick as the keeper
thought it was going to be a cross.

The West Ham fans continue to stay upbeat as a round of "We are West Ham's
Claret Blue Army" went for at least 10 minutes. Just about everything in our
songbook was performed on this bitterly cold night in Manchester. The home
supporters barely managed a peep and although it is always more difficult
for home teams to keep up the noise, they were embarrassingly poor.

On the pitch though only one team remained poor and although it was us in
possession most of the time, it was the hosts who looked as though they
would grab the next goal.

Freddie Sears was introduced by Zola in place of Lee Bowyer as Craig Bellamy
seemed to drop into center midfield.

Manchester United at the same time brought on Wayne Rooney who was quickly
involved in the action as his chip from close range nearly beat Green.

Rooney then saw a stinging 20 yard effort beaten away by Green who saw the
shot late.

We had a golden chance to grab a goal when a wonderful pass over the top saw
Boa Morte beat the offside trap but he got his shot all wrong and the tame
effort was easily saved by Kuszczak.

With about five minutes remaining we had another golden chance as Di Michele
was played through down the right with two players in the middle to pass the
ball to, but his pass was under hit to Sears and the chance was gone.

The final whistle went and the travelling supports remained to give the team
a reassuring applause.

Fair play again to Carlos Tevez who came up to the fans and applauded them
as he did last season.

Player Reviews

Robert Green
Nothing he could do about the goals and made a few good saves as you would
expect him to have to go in a game like this.

Herita Ilunga
Was always going to be a struggle up against the World player of the year in
Ronaldo but he acquitted himself well enough.

Matthew Upson
He and Collins were really up against it in the first half with Manchester
United slicing through our weak midfield. This saw Upson making a number of
last gasp interceptions which would have surely caused more goals.

James Collins
Like Upson he was there to make some vital challenges but he looked ragged
at times as the isolation he and Upson found themselves was ultimately too
much.

Julien Faubert
Poor again as his overall distribution was not up to standard. His crossing
when going forward was poor and Nani had the better of him all game. In
fairness to Faubert, he had no support from the midfield and was often
caught two on one.

Valon Behrami
Made some good runs in the first half and if anyone was going to make
something happen it was him. His final ball was poor on a couple of
occasions and was taken off with injury in the first half.

Lee Bowyer
Coming back to full fitness this was a very difficult run out for Bowyer as
he struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. The effort was there and
I think we will see the best of him over the next few games.

Hayden Mullins
Looked lost throughout the game with this being out of those out of his
depth run outs. Worked hard as he always does but did nothing on the ball or
off it.

Matthew Etherington
A few decent bursts forward in the first half aside, there was very little
to take from this performance as any threat he possessed was easily
nullified by the Manchester United defence.

David Di Michele
I believe that Di Michele is a former footballer who is actually 42 and
retired a few years ago. He looks as though he once had a little something
but now is just enjoying playing any standard as football as he thinks about
what he once was. Cannot stay on his feet, cannot pass to a West Ham player,
cannot take the ball past a player. No pace, no quality, and this is not
just this game.

Craig Bellamy
Lots of high balls were played towards him which meant he could do little
with. Had a tendency to run towards the flanks instead of towards the goal
which was very frustrating. Another game without a goal.

Subs Used

Luis Boa More (on for Behrami 44 mins)
Our best player in the second half as he was actually able to beat a player
and show a bit of skill. Doesn't wimp out of challenges and although he
should have scored this was a good display from the much maligned winger.

Jack Collison (on for Etherington 45 mins)
A very assured display from what looks like a very promising youngster.
Confident on the ball and showed a lot of strength when up against a strong
home side.

Freddie Sears (on for Bowyer 69 mins)
Like Collison he looked quite good and really buzzed about kicking at the
heels of the Man United defenders. He seems to be a bit of a bastard to play
against as he doesn't let you settle. If I had the choice of starting him or
Di Michele at Boro' I know who I would pick.

Subs Not Used: Lastuvka, Lopez, Davenport, Reid.

Overall

We are not expected to beat teams like Manchester United on their own patch
but there is a sense of panic simply because that is four games in a row
that we have lost.

This persistence with the 4-3-3 is becoming a little tiresome as you have to
change your formation to adapt to the opposition you are up against. We
needed to frustrate Manchester United but like against Arsenal we just let
them see a lot of the ball.

Without Carlton Cole to aim at we have nothing up front and we are really
struggling in this department but there again I am sure we all pointed this
out after our first Pre Season game at Hampton & Richmond.

This you cannot blame Zola for as he has not really had a chance to bring in
anyone although how good this Tristian bloke is remains to be seen.

It's Middlesbrough on Saturday at the Riverside and if this game was not one
we expected to take points from, the trip to Boro' is.

A defeat on Saturday and the panic button will be very close to being
pressed as we continue our slide down the table.

Saturday is a massive game for us and one which may shape our season.

Franco's Feelings

"They are the champions of Europe so it's difficult but at least they gave
everything in the second half.
"My players deserved a goal in the second half but Sears and Collison came
on and did very well.
"I have a great belief in my players, I trust them very much, and I am sure
this bad spell will be over soon."

Zola set to give Tristan his debut against Middlesbrough
Daily Mail
By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 10:07 AM on 31st October 2008

Former Spanish international striker Diego Tristan looks likely to be
included in West Ham's squad for the first time tomorrow as Gianfranco
Zola's side go to Middlesbrough desperate to stop a run of four defeats.
Tristan has signed a one-year deal with West Ham after leaving Italian club
Livorno and has been working hard to build up his fitness. The 32-year-old,
who scored 78 goals in 177 matches for Deportivo La Coruna, could start on
the bench. Swiss international midfield player Valon Behrami is definitely
out with a calf injury but Scott Parker could return along with club captain
Lucas Neill.

Ashton makes shock comeback claim

Dean Ashton has admitted he will be happy if he makes his comeback from an
ankle injury for West Ham before the end of the season. The 25-year-old
England international hitman has required surgery on the problem and it was
thought he could be back in first-team contention by March. However Ashton
has now admitted that he has no timescale and if he plays before the end of
the current campaign it will be a bonus. He told The Echo: "The papers have
said I'll be returning in March, but I don't know where they have got that
from. I haven't been given a date myself yet. "It's more a case of it being
at the end of the season and I'll be really happy if I can play my part in
the team then. That's looking more likely at the moment. "I'm pleased with
the way surgery went and how I'm feeling. I was feeling pretty down at
first, when all I could do was sit at home, but luckily that only lasted for
two weeks. "My spirits are a lot higher now I'm off my crutches. I've been
off them for a week, which is a good sign. "I am working hard at my rehab
already and I feel like I am on the way back."

Man Utd No2 Phelan: We were watching Carrick at Wallsend
31.10.08 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan has revealed they were beaten
by West Ham for Michael Carrick when he was a kid at Wallsend. "Michael was
identified before he was at West Ham," Phelan told manutd.com. "But West Ham
got in there quick. We saw him young and always admired his talent - the
timing never fell right. Around the time we signed him, we wondered whether
to go for a defensive midfielder or one who could set the play rolling, and
Michael fell into that category. We targeted him as a player who fitted into
our grand scheme. "He gives a feeling of well-being within the team. "Where
other players might want to rush, he takes his time. He can take the sting
out of the game, and also keep the pace of it up. It's his control, attitude
and way of thinking. He's learned a lot through playing with good players,
and being at a club that is constantly striving for more. He's a winner, and
he wants to be the best midfielder in the country."

EVERTON'S £15million summer signing Marouane Fellaini will miss the Toffees'
Premier League trip to West Ham United after picking up his fifth booking of
the season at Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday. Belgian Fellaini, who headed a
90th-minute winner at the Reebok, was shown a yellow by referee Phil Dowd
for his over-exuberant celebrations. The 20-year-old, who has scored three
goals in eight appearances for the Toffees, will still be able to feature
against Fulham on Saturday but will sit out the game at Upton Park on
November 8. Wednesday night's booking followed cautions in the games against
Hull City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United. Etterbeek-born
Fellaini, who also scored in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United last
weekend, arrived at Goodison Park for an initial £4million from Standard
Liege in August.

West Ham lose Behrami to injury
Vital Football

West Ham's Valon Behrami could be out of action for up to a month having
been taken off injured during Wednesday's loss to Man Utd, sustaining calf
damage.
The 23-year-old broke down just before the half time mark in obvious
discomfort and was later stretchered off during his come back match having
missed out on the loss to Arsenal also because of injury. The Swiss
international's absence leaves manager Gianfranco Zola with an injury
headache, already missing a number of key players sidelined with injury. A
depleted Hammers squad travels to Middlesbrough on Saturday looking to pick
up a win in order to avoid a fith successive defeat.

Ashton out until the end of the season
E24
30 October 2008
By NEIL TRAINIS

WEST HAM striker Dean Ashton could be sidelined for the rest of the season
after admitting this week that he has no idea when he will return to action
following ankle surgery. Ashton had surgery on the injury at the end of last
month and was originally expected to return within six weeks, but the
Hammers were left reeling when subsequent reports suggested that the England
international would be out of action until March. Now Ashton has admitted
that his lay-off could last even longer, dealing a major blow to manager
Gianfranco Zola, who is suffering from a striker crisis following Carlton
Cole's red card against Arsenal last weekend. Cole was handed a three-match
suspension after the Hammers declined to appeal the sending-off, leaving
Craig Bellamy, David Di Michele and teenager Freddie Sears as the only fit
forwards at the Italian's disposal. Zola looks set to be short of attacking
options for a considerable period after Ashton revealed that he is unlikely
to play again this season. He said: "The papers have said I'll be returning
in March but I don't know where they have got that from. I haven't been
given a date myself yet. "It's more a case of it being at the end of the
season and I'll be really happy if I can play my part in the team then.
That's looking more likely at the moment. "I'm pleased with the way surgery
went and how I'm feeling. I was feeling pretty down at first, when all I
could do was sit at home, but luckily that only lasted for two weeks. "My
spirits are a lot higher now I'm off my crutches. I've been off them for a
week, which is a good sign. I am working hard at my rehab already and I feel
like I am on the way back." Ashton's absence has coincided with a goal
drought at Upton Park. The Hammers had mustered just four goals from their
opening four Premier League away games ahead of last night's trip to Old
Trafford. Zola could now call on new signing Diego Tristan to lead the line
against Middlesbrough on Saturday. The former Spain international agreed a
one-year deal at West Ham a fortnight ago and has been battling to improve
his match fitness.

On a freezing and frustrating north-west night, West Ham United were
unfortunately left in the cold at Old Trafford by the reigning Barclays
Premier League champions.

Despite putting up some solid, second half resistance in which they might
even have forced an interesting finale, the contest was settled by two first
half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, who celebrated the announcement of his
FIFPro World Footballer of the Year award with a decisive double.

Following Sunday's defeat against Arsenal, Gianfranco Zola had made just two
enforced changes as Valon Behrami and Matthew Etherington came in for Scott
Parker (calf) and the suspended Carlton Cole. Sir Alex Ferguson, on the
other hand, made five switches from the side that had drawn at Everton as
Tomasz Kuszczak, Anderson, Nani, Carlos Tevez and Rafael Da Silva replaced
Edwin van der Sar, Wes Brown plus substitutes Ji-Sung Park, Ryan Giggs and
Wayne Rooney.

After drawing against Everton on Saturday, the Red Devils quickly set about
getting back to winning ways. Indeed, as early as the second minute, Ronaldo
carved down the left flank before squaring into Dimitar Berbatov, who saw
his point-blank shot deflected over.

Shortly afterwards, Nani elaborately back-heeled weakly into the clutches of
the crouching Robert Green, who then saw the Portuguese playmaker
nonchalantly drill an angled 15-yarder across the face of goal.

Already it was clear that Zola's strategy was to rely on cunning
counter-attacks using the pace of Etherington and the tireless Craig Bellamy
and, on seven minutes, Julien Faubert''s raid forward was thwarted by former
Boleyn Ground defender Rio Ferdinand, before Kuszczak hastily hacked clear
in a defensive scramble and then Etherington saw his low 20-yarder held by
the home 'keeper.

But those anxious moments quickly subsided for the home supporters, who saw
the grounded Green bravely dive into the studs of Berbatov before Matthew
Upson cleared the loose ball off the line.

Although the visitors survived that scare, just seconds later, the home side
took the lead when Nani's 13th-minute cross from the left was swept home
from ten yards by Ronaldo, who claimed his fourth goal of the season.

Having just made one, Nani then went close to netting himself when he again
fired agonisingly across goal and, after the over-lapping Behrami's by-line
cutback was intercepted, Patrice Evra was then booked for scything through
the Swiss international.

On the half-hour mark, that man Ronaldo turned an already uphill task into a
mountainous mission. The United No7 got in front of Herita Ilunga to slide
home from six yards, after Anderson's inch-perfect pass had found Berbatov,
who rolled the ball into the danger zone having beaten James Collins on the
by-line with a dazzling dance that would have seen him waltz past any
defender in the land.

The pain of that two-goal deficit was compounded for the battered Bellamy
shortly afterwards, when he took the full impact of Kuszczak's charge from
the goal-line and worse followed when Behrami was stretchered away after
injuring his calf as he escaped Evra on the stroke of half-time.

With his replacement Luis Boa Morte still finding his feet, Green pulled off
a superb flying save to hold a close-range header from former team-mate
Carlos Tevez, who again received a rapturous reception from the vociferous
visiting fans amongst the sold-out Old Trafford crowd of 75,397.

Jack Collison replaced Etherington for the restart as Zola reverted to a
more traditional 4-4-2 formation in a bid to shore up his midfield and
although Ronaldo, Berbatov and Tevez continued to threaten, the visitors
held them at bay.

Midway through the second half, the quick-thinking Bellamy was just inches
away from embarrassing the back-pedalling Kuszczak with a 40-yard free-kick
that sailed over the bar.

That was the catalyst for Zola to introduce Freddie Sears in place of Lee
Bowyer, while Rooney and former West Ham United midfielder Michael Carrick
stepped from the home bench as Darren Fletcher and Nani departed.

Rooney soon deposited the ball onto the roof of Green's net with a cheeky
chip before forcing Green to beat away his fierce 20-yarder and sending
another curler over the angle.

At the other end, Boa Morte ghosted into the home penalty area, where he
steered the ball straight to the helplessly-exposed Kuszczak as the offside
flag stayed down and, with five minutes remaining, the breaking David Di
Michele looked set to force a frenzied finale, only for Nemanja Vidic to
intervene at the vital moment and sum up a night of frustration for the
visitors.

Man Utd 2-0 West Ham
BBC.co.uk
By Chris Whyatt

Cristiano Ronaldo's first-half brace saw Manchester United cruise to victory
over a poor West Ham at Old Trafford. Displaying flashes of real style,
United raced into a 13th-minute lead after the superb Nani cut the ball back
for Ronaldo to slot into the corner. Dimitar Berbatov's sublime skill saw
him skip past James Collins, allowing him to square for Ronaldo to tap in.
But West Ham offered little attacking threat and a lame Luis Boa Morte
effort failed to test keeper Tomasz Kuszczak. With Sir Alex Ferguson's side
eight points behind leaders Liverpool coming into the game, United were keen
to return to winning ways after being held to a frustrating draw at Everton
on Saturday. And they found the perfect opponents, with Gianfranco Zola's
Hammers looking every bit like a team who had lost their last three games
and are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
United almost took a second-minute lead after Berbatov's side-footed shot
was deflected just over the bar by Matthew Upson. And Nani was cleverly
found down the left two minutes later and flashed a powerful snap-shot just
wide of Hammers keeper Robert Green's upright. The home side did have a
momentary lapse of concentration but, with Craig Bellamy isolated upfront
and West Ham's five-man midfield proving ineffective, United began to run
riot. The ubiquitous Nani passed a simple cross behind the visitors static
back-line for Ronaldo to guide a low left-footed shot into the corner.
United - who have now not scored in their past 33 league matches - created
chance after chance as Nani fired just wide and Anderson failed to register
his first goal for the club when presented with an easy opportunity.
Upson fought manfully to stem the tide but United's class was simply
overwhelming them. And the inevitable second goal came on 29 minutes when
Anderson caressed the down the left and, after flummoxing Collins with a
breathtaking moment of skill on the by-line, Berbatov squared for Ronaldo to
slot in his second. United continued to keep West Ham on the back foot until
the break, and Zola's half-time team talk and changes did at least see his
side fight under in the second half. Hayden Mullins made a crucial block on
the ever-willing Carlos Tevez in the penalty area, and a posse of Hammers
defenders had to combine to block his progress minutes later. Bellamy did
rouse West Ham's travelling contingent with a 45-yard free-kick which dipped
just over United's crossbar, as he tried to catch Tomasz Kuszczak off his
line. But substitute Wayne Rooney came on for Nani with 20 minutes remaining
and soon had Green pushing a deft chip over his bar and scrambling to block
a vicious drive. Boa Morte was put through by Bellamy's floated pass over
the top of the United defence but knocked a weak effort into Kuszczak's
arms. The Hammers did also make a couple of late counter-attacks amid a
flurry of substitutions but, time and again, their final ball was not good
enough.

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan:"We felt we should have
attacked the game more and gone for more goals. We weren't as comfortable as
we should have been in the second half. "Berbatov showed his credentials and
that piece of skill was the highlight of the game. "We need to keep the run
going and the players realise that goal [difference] could be important at
the end of the season."

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola:"They are the champions of Europe so it's
difficult but at least they gave everything in the second half. "My players
deserved a goal in the second half but Sears and Collison came on and did
very well. "I have a great belief in my players, I trust them very much, and
I am sure this bad spell will be over soon."

Hammers to fight Curbishley claim
BBC.co.uk
By Nabil Hassan

West Ham have told Alan Curbishley they intend to fight his claim for
compensation following his resignation in September, BBC Sport understands.
Curbishley has written to the Hammers informing them he intends to pursue a
claim for constructive dismissal. The club has responded by telling
Curbishley he waived any right to compensation when he resigned. Curbishley
argues the club broke a clause in his contract guaranteeing him a say in all
transfer dealings. The former Charlton boss says this was not the case
during his final months at Upton Park, when he argues the club sold
defenders Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney against his wishes.
This prompted the 50-year-old to quit his role with Italian Gianfranco Zola
replacing him at Upton Park. Curbishley joined West Ham as manager in 2006
having previously spent 15 years as boss at Charlton. After taking over at
Upton Park in December 2006 he helped the Hammers beat the drop despite West
Ham looking certainties for relegation. His second season saw the Hammers
finish 10th in the Premier League but he resigned in September with the club
fifth in the table. Hammers officials are currently waiting to hear back
from Curbishley. "We are aware of Alan Curbishley's position and it is now a
matter for the lawyers for the two parties," a West Ham official told BBC
Sport.

Alan Curbishley is set to sue West Ham United for constructive dismissal.
The former Hammers boss walked out of the club at the beginning of last
month in disgust at the board's policy of selling players without his prior
knowledge. With a clause in his contract confirming that Curbishley retained
full control over the movement of players, the 50-year-old is now in a
position to sue the club for the remainder of his contract, which had just
under two years to run. The figure in question is thought to be around
£1million. An unnamed spokesman for West Ham United told the BBC: "We are
aware of Alan Curbishley's position and it is now a matter for the lawyers
for the two parties."

The latest tantalising titbits from the wacky world of West Ham ...

* West Ham United are being linked with a move for Blackburn's Zurab
Khizanishvili by the Daily Mirror. According to the tabloid, United are
'leading the race' to sign the out-of-favour defender.

* Gianfranco Zola will tell his team to carry on regardless as they prepare
to face Manchester United at Old Trafford tonight. The Italian, whose team
have lost their last three successive games will stick with his attacking
4-3-3 formation.

* Freddie Ljungberg, who left West Ham in the summer several million pounds
the richer after having his three year contract ripped up has signed for MLS
outfit Seattle Sounders. The Swede is also keen on taking up acting,
something which aided his decision to move to the States.

* Former Hammer Marlon Harewood, who scored the goal that took United to the
FA Cup final just two years ago is to be the subject of a £4million bid from
Stoke City. Harewood has barely featured for Aston Villa since being signed
by Martin O'Neill from West Ham for £4million.

* Scott Parker has hailed the arrival of Gianfranco Zola as successor to
Alan Curbishley, telling The Sun that 'he has helped everyone, including
me'.

* Former Hammer Frank McAvennie will be signing copies of a new book at the
club's Lakeside store this Friday. The Scot will be in store between 1:30pm
and 5:30pm to promote new Hammers book 'West Ham Utd In my Day, Volume II'.

* On-loan Ashley Miller made his second appearance inside three days for
Bishops Stortford last night as the North Essex club came from behind to
snatch a 3-3 with local rivals Chelmsford City.

* Former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp was mercilessly booed by Portsmouth
fans as he accepted the freedom of the city from council bigwigs in a civic
ceremony yesterday. Redknapp, who shafted Pompey for the second time in four
years earlier this week when joining Tottenham has the audacity to call the
hecklers 'idiots'.

Ronaldo too hot for Hammers
SSN
Champions condem West Ham to fourth successive defeat
Last updated: 29th October 2008

MATCH FACTS

Man of the match - Dimitar Berbatov: The Bulgarian oozes class from every
orifice and was again at the hub of United's best work, especially in the
first half.

Moment of the match - Ronaldo's second goal: The Portuguese wide man will
not score an easier goal but the manner of Berbatov's assist was stunning.
James Collins will probably still be wondering how he was beaten so close to
the by-line.

Attempt of the match - Rooney's chip: The in-form striker was left kicking
his heels on the bench for most the game but could have grabbed a couple
when unleashed. His best effort was a deft chip, which Robert Green did well
to turn over.

Talking point: After a fourth consecutive league defeat, are West Ham set
for a battle to beat the drop?

Cristiano Ronaldo's brace was enough to silence those that have accused him
of being out-of-sorts this season and in the process condemn West Ham to a
fourth consecutive league defeat. Manchester United rarely had to get out of
first gear as they had too much guile, power and pace for Gianfranco Zola's
shy of confidence Hammers at Old Trafford. Ronaldo's first saw compatriot
Nani cast as the architect, as his precision cross from the left, after
being fed in by Patrice Evra, was dispatched from ten yards. It was then
left to Dimitar Berbatov to further enhance his glowing reputation as a
darling of the United faithful, when the most exquisite piece of skill left
James Collins flummoxed on the by-line, before he fed in Ronaldo for the
simplest of finishes. Sir Alex Ferguson will feel his side could have scored
more in the second half as they took their foot off the throttle, but it was
a more than comfortable evening for the Scot and his players. After
Saturday's slip-up at Everton, the three points were all Ferguson wanted as
his side look to keep current pacesetters Liverpool in view. In leaving out
Wayne Rooney for Carlos Tevez, Ferguson was omitting a man, one visit to
Everton apart, at the top of his game. The need to give Tevez a chance after
sitting on the sidelines for virtually a month, was obvious. Some fans,
though, questioned why Rooney was the man sacrificed. Others wonder why
Berbatov was bought at all given last year's strikeforce proved to be a
devastating combination at home and abroad. Berbatov has tried to answer the
doubters with a flurry of goals and eye-catching assists. But none came
close to his contribution after half an hour.
Collins must have thought he was in control as he shadowed Berbatov to the
by-line as the pair chased Anderson's pass. But the young Wales
international was in for a shock. With a pirouette any ballet dancer would
have been proud of, Berbatov turned, rolled the ball beyond Collins and was
gone, hugging the white line before presenting Ronaldo with a tap-in for his
second goal. Even Collins must have felt like applauding. Having faced
Arsenal at Upton Park on Sunday, Zola is quickly discovering management is
not quite as easy as he found being a player. If only Zola had someone with
his instinctive brain and silky touch at West Ham. Almost daily his players
are being linked with moves elsewhere. England defender Matthew Upson is
among that number, deservedly so judging by the way he threw his body in the
way of so many United chances. Berbatov, Ronaldo and star man Nani were all
denied by the centre-half. There was nothing Upson could do to deny Ronaldo
his opener though, the Portugal superstar crashing home from eight yards
after one of Nani's pinpoint crosses had rolled into his path. Tevez was
eager to make an impression and he would have scored if his header from
Patrice Evra's cross had been a foot either side of Robert Green rather than
straight at him. Any faint hopes of a West Ham revival were dealt a grievous
blow just before the break when Valon Behrami went down in agony with no-one
near him. The immediate fear was a serious knee injury and the Swiss was in
obvious pain as he left the field on a stretcher.
Zola might have been getting some much-needed advice as he strolled down the
touchline in earnest conversation with Ferguson as the pair made their way
to the dugouts. But the second period just brought more worries for the
newly-installed Hammers chief. Tevez might have had a penalty when he was
hauled down by Herita Ilunga before Nani's rushed his shot when Berbatov
laid a neat pass and smashed it over. The introduction of Rooney and, for
only his third appearance of the season, Michael Carrick merely illustrated
the difference in standards Zola must now try to overcome. Rooney had gone
for the bald look again and a delicate chip straight after his arrival might
have shaved the crossbar if Robert Green had not touched it over. There was
nothing delicate about Rooney's next effort, a thunderous shot from 30 yards
that Green was forced to beat away. The keeper might have expected to work
harder when Patrice Evra set up Ronaldo but with a hat-trick beckoning, the
winger's shot was disappointing. Not as disappointing as the volley Craig
Bellamy fired into the stands though which must have made Zola wish he could
pull his boots back on.

Italian refuses to panic despite another Hammers defeat
Last updated: 30th October 2008

Gianfranco Zola was refusing to be too downbeat despite watching his West
Ham side fall to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United. The Hammers have
now lost four games on the bounce in the league and are in real danger of
becoming embroiled in a relegation scrap this season. Cristiano Ronaldo's
first-half brace was enough to put United in complete control and at no
point did West Ham look like reversing the situation. West Ham did improve
after the half-time break, after what was an uninspiring first 45 minutes,
and Zola is keen to draw on such a positive. "The second half has to be a
starting point for us," said Zola, whose side tackle Middlesbrough at the
weekend. "It is very important for us to pick something up on Saturday and
stop this losing run. "I have total belief in the players. I have so much
faith in their quality and I am sure they will soon get over this bad
spell." Zola went on to report Valon Behrami had been stretchered off with a
major calf injury that will rule him out for a lengthy spell.

Cristiano Ronaldo brace for Manchester United swats aside poor West Ham

As the Icelandic economy slips beneath the chilly, grey waters of the
Atlantic, as its banks are nationalised, its airlines go bust, so its most
famous sporting institution is collapsing almost in sympathy.

Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson's determination to cling on to the ownership of West
Ham in the teeth of personal losses estimated at £230 million could not have
been improved by a video of this, their fourth successive defeat under
Gianfranco Zola.

Sir Alex Ferguson described Zola as his favourite foreign footballer outside
Old Trafford and, as the teams came out for a second half whose conclusion
was already foregone, the Manchester United manager placed a paternalistic
arm around his shoulder. Zola's team, however, needed someone's boot up
their collective backside, though by the finish Ferguson thought much the
same about his own side.

"They took their foot off the pedal and slipped a couple of gears below what
they're capable of," he said. "It ended up too lax for me. The football in
the first half was magnificent. Afterwards it was disappointing."

It is not a crime to lose at Old Trafford, or to be beaten by Cristiano
Ronaldo's goals, but United seldom broke sweat. The gulf between the two
sides was demonstrated when Zola put on young Fred Sears and Ferguson
responded with young Wayne Rooney, who immediately reeled off two vicious
shots.

Realising that Carlos Tevez had been feeling sidelined, Ferguson admitted he
had little option but to start with the Argentine.

"I sat down with him only last week to stress that our faith in him remains
absolute," he said. Although his signing might cost West Ham £50 million in
compensation to Sheffield United, Tevez is still revered by those who
travelled from London, though he was their only source of cheers.

Very rarely does Old Trafford seem anything other than the centre of the
football world but last night the stadium appeared to accept it was staging
something of a sideshow, as if it knew the big battles were elsewhere — at
the Emirates, at Anfield and, most improbably of all, at the Kingston
Communications Stadium, Hull.

Despite the club wallowing in self-congratulation before kick-off: with
Ronaldo accepting yet another award for what must be a mantelpiece sagging
under the weight of silverware, and entering to the kind of fanfare usually
reserved for boxers at Caesars Palace, Manchester United's beginning was
sluggish and sloppy.

And then, with one turn and shot, Ronaldo demonstrated why he is worthy of
so many awards. The Portuguese language which unites them off the pitch was
a common thread in the build-up as Anderson found Nani and his low cross was
buried past Robert Green in one fluid move by the FifPro world footballer of
the year.

It was a beautifully-taken goal but, compared with his second, it was almost
ordinary. When Dimitar Berbatov appeared trapped on the West Ham goal-line
halfway to the corner flag it appeared his only hope was to force a corner
by driving the ball against his marker, James Collins.

Instead, with no room for manoeuvre, Berbatov flicked it into the foot of
space between the line and Collins' boot and slid the ball hard and low
across the West Ham goal for Ronaldo to slide home. "It showed fantastic
imagination, control and balance," Ferguson observed. "You would pay double
the money to watch that."

Alan Curbishley set to claim compensation from West Ham
West Ham are facing the possibility of a drawn-out legal battle with their
former manager Alan Curbishley over his claim for compensation following his
resignation in September.
Telegraph
By Jeremy Wilson
Last Updated: 7:46AM GMT 30 Oct 2008

Curbishley is understood to have written to West Ham informing them he
intends to pursue a claim for constructive dismissal, with the club
believing that he waived any right to compensation when he resigned. The
former Charlton manager felt he had a clause in his contract guaranteeing
him a say in all transfer dealings and he was particularly unhappy with the
deadline day departure of George McCartney. West Ham, though, believe that
Curbishley was kept informed of their strategy throughout the transfer
window. The London club are also involved in a legal battle with Sheffield
United over the Carloz Tevez affair and are now awaiting a new hearing to
determine the success of Sheffield United's attempt to block an appeal to
the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Sheffield United, who are claiming in
excess of £30 million in damages, have applied for an injunction which
argues that the two clubs entered the Football Association's arbitration
process with the understanding that there would be no appeal unless it was
over a point of law. Headed by Manchester United director Maurice Watkins,
West Ham's new legal team have written a detailed document which maintains
that the FA's statutes do not exclude an appeal to CAS. West Ham also
believe that CAS is the dispute resolution chamber that Fifa, the game's
governing body, formally recognises as the body that should hear appeals
regarding final decisions. An FA independent arbitration tribunal ruled
against West Ham last month and it has even been suggested that some of the
relegated squad will launch private actions over loss of earnings. However,
West Ham have not heard from any aggrieved players, while there is a feeling
that any private claim could undermine Sheffield's United's overall damages
award. This is because the club's claim for compensation is understood to
focus on lost revenue without acknowledging any reduced costs, such as a
smaller wage bill, that may have arisen as a result of relegation.

Ferguson frustrated by United's 'lax' approach
Manchester United 2 West Ham United 0
By Jeremy Cross
Thursday, 30 October 2008
Independent.co.uk Web

Sir Alex Ferguson showed a mixture of admiration and irritation in the wake
of Manchester United's comfortable victory over West Ham at Old Trafford,
which came courtesy of two strikes in the first half from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's goals and some inspired play from Dimitar Berbatov were more than
enough to cater for the feeble challenge presented by Gianfranco Zola's
side, who slipped to their fourth straight defeat.

Ronaldo will take the headlines for two well-taken goals that increased his
tally to five for the season, yet it was Berbatov who tormented the visiting
defence most with the talents which persuaded Ferguson to spend £30m on
bringing him to Old Trafford from London. He was exceptional, but the
problem for Zola's team was that so were several other players in red
shirts.

While Ferguson lavished praise on both players, he was irked in equal
measure by the fact they failed to score more goals after the interval.

Ferguson said: "The first half was magnificent and I was looking for more of
the same in the second half. Goals can be important come the end of the
season but we took our foot of the pedal. They ended up too lax for me.

"Ronaldo took his goals very well, but Berbatov's play was magnificent. He
showed fantastic imagination, control and balance and you'd pay double the
money to watch that."

Ferguson made no fewer than five changes from the side held to a draw at
Goodison Park last weekend, the most notable being the omission of Wayne
Rooney at the expense of Carlos Tevez.

Zola, who earned lavish praise from Ferguson in his programme notes, was
without the suspended Carlton Cole as the visitors embarked on the seemingly
thankless task of trying to arrest their recent slide.

Their challenge appeared far greater within 14 minutes – the time it took
United to forge ahead and capitalise on their enterprising start. Berbatov
had been denied a certain goal by the outstretched boot of Matthew Upson
before Nani's slide-rule pass found Ronaldo on the penalty spot and the
outcome was inevitable, the Portugal international sweeping home a clinical
shot past the helpless Robert Green. Nani came within inches of doubling
United's advantage just two minutes later but saw his angled drive flash
just wide as the onslaught showed no signs of abating.

Craig Bellamy was becoming an increasingly isolated figure leading his
side's attack on his own, yet even he would not have failed to admire the
sublime skill of Berbatov in creating Ronaldo's second goal.

Taking a long pass from Anderson, Berbatov left James Collins in a daze on
the byline with a quicksilver turn before finding Ronaldo for the simplest
of finishes. It might have taken Berbatov some time to settle after his
arrival from Tottenham, but this moment of genius alone made the wait
worthwhile.

Within half-an-hour the visitors had been left facing a damage limitation
exercise as the gulf in class between the sides continued to be cruelly
exposed. Tevez should have increased the misery on the cusp of half-time but
he headed Patrice Evra's cross straight at Green from close range. In the
end it didn't matter that no more goals came and Zola admitted there were
few answers to the problems posed by United when they decide to turn on the
style.

Zola said: "We knew it was going to be difficult, to be hard for us but we
made it that little bit harder by conceding two goals so quickly.

"Manchester United are such a special team, but our second-half performance
is a starting point. It gives us something to build on. I know the qualities
of my players so I'm not worried. I still believe in them and have faith in
them."

Zola is also facing an anxious wait to discover the extent of a calf injury
sustained by Julien Faubert and he added: "We don't know how long he will be
out for but it doesn't look good."

Goals: Ronaldo (14) 1-0; Ronaldo (30) 2-0.

Manchester United (4-4-2): Kuszczak; R Da Silva (Neville, 80), Ferdinand,
Vidic, Evra; Ronaldo, Fletcher (Carrick, 68), Anderson, Nani (Rooney, 68);

Man United 2 West Ham 0: Red-hot Ronaldo hammers home a title warning By Ian
Ladyman
Last updated at 8:27 AM on 30th October 2008
Daily Mail

If squads rather than teams win league titles then Manchester United
provided firm evidence last night that they remain English football's
eminent force. Having seen his side take only a point the weekend meeting
with Everton, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson made five changes for the
visit of West Ham and he was rewarded with a comprehensive and stylish
victory. Even though arch rivals Liverpool have started this campaign
brightly, does Rafael Benitez really have a squad deep enough to outrun
Ferguson's? Does Arsene Wenger at Arsenal? Truthfully, they probably do not
and it will still be some surprise if United do not battle head to head with
Chelsea again when the season enters its business end next Spring. In truth,
they probably do not. United, for example, have three good right backs.
Liverpool do not really have one. So it will still be a surprise if United
do not again battle head to head with Chelsea for supremacy when the season
enters its business end in the spring. United were terrific at times, albeit
against poor opposition. Cristiano Ronaldo scored two first-half goals while
Ferguson even found room for Carlos Tevez in his starting line-up. Wayne
Rooney, United's best player this season, began the night on the bench.
Ronaldo, of course, will gather many of this morning's headlines, as much
for celebrating his goals as for the actual scoring. Did he smile after
scoring? Or did he frown again? After his first, he managed to do both, but
who really cares?
Last night's work was about very much more than one man. Gianfranco Zola's
team did improve after half-time and even had a chance to scare the
champions when substitute Luis Boa Morte shot weakly at Tomasz Kuszczak with
15 minutes left. But earlier, during the meat and gristle of the game, they
were dreadful. United won comfortably and Ferguson's suggestion that his
team disappointed him in the second half said much about his own high
standards. The United manager said: 'In the first half we were magnificent
and I was looking forward to more of the same. We wanted more goals as that
could be important. But they took the foot of the pedal and they ended up
too lax for me.' Aware of Tevez's recent unhappiness over being left out of
the starting line-up recently, Ferguson offered some public encouragement by
way of his programme notes and revealed that he had called the Argentine in
to his office to reassure him last week.
Tevez will have appreciated his manager's gesture and appreciated his place
in the starting line-up even more. Yet this was a night when others shone.
Ronaldo offered glimpses of his best form, Dimitar Berbatov was sublime at
times while Nani was consistently dangerous. United sensed West Ham were
defensively weak down their right flank early in the match and Ferguson's
players seized on the opportunities that Julien Faubert's poor positioning
offered them. Nani had already provided the dangerous Berbatov with one
early chance when he set up Ronaldo with his first goal in the 14th minute.
Nani had far too much space after a United corner and when he passed to his
right, Ronaldo whipped the opener across keeper Robert Green and in to the
corner with his left foot. West Ham were looking out of their depth as Nani
and Anderson again came close before Ronaldo extended the lead in the 30th
minute. Berbatov chased another pass down the left and bamboozled West Ham
defender James Collins with a superb piece of skill close to the line before
setting up the charging Ronaldo from a yard out. Bulgarian Berbatov's
contribution really was sublime and even drew applause from the United
substitutes. Collins, for his part, will hope never to see it again. After
the interval the game fell a little flat. Substitute Boa Morte should have
scored when he beat the United offside trap but the home side also came
close. Rooney came on and almost broke Green's arms with a tracer bullet of
a shot from 30 yards late on, while Tevez should have been awarded a
penalty.

West Ham manager Zola said: 'We must use the second half as a starting point
now. Saturday's match against Middlesbrough is crucial to us.'

Behrami back for Zola
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola should be able to call on Valon Behrami for the trip to
Manchester United
28.10.2008

West Ham United will welcome Valon Behrami back for Wednesday night's trip
to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United but Lucas Neill is still
missing.

Swiss international midfielder Behrami had been an ever-present until
Sunday's defeat by Arsenal when a slight groin problem saw him miss out as a
precautionary measure with the trips to United and Middlesbrough on Saturday
in mind. Matthew Upson will captain the side again in the absence of Neill,
who is still laid low with the virus that kept him out of Sunday's match.

Recent recruit Diego Tristan will not make the trip but is getting closer to
full fitness, and could be involved at the weekend. He could deputise for
Carlton Cole, who is serving a three-game ban that will keep him out of
contention until the 15 November visit of Portsmouth. Mark Noble is also on
the sidelines with a calf muscle injury, meaning Lee Bowyer and Hayden
Mullins could continue after impressing against Arsenal.

Gianfranco Zola is not worried about the prospect of taking on the defending
champions at Old Trafford, even without his leading scorer Cole. "We do
respect them but we don't fear them," the manager said. "We are going to go
there and play our game. We are going to try to win the game as we always
try to do that."

As was the case with Arsenal, when his team more than matched their
opponents before some late misfortune, Zola is well aware of what it takes
to compete with the elite clubs. "I'll be certainly telling them that it is
a tough match but in football everything is possible. We are a good team and
I believe that we can do that. We respect them but we will play our game and
then we will see."

The match comes on the back of three straight defeats but the manager and
the team can consider themselves more than unlucky not to have picked up any
points in what have been close-fought encounters. "It never happened to me
that I saw a team playing that well and then not getting any points for
three matches.

"I know that in football things can change quickly. We just need a game to
get it right and then everything will be better. It's a good starting point
to play well, results are a consequence of that. That's my philosophy and I
will pursue it. The way we are playing suits the team very well and just
have to accept that sometimes there are bad moments and things don't go your
way."

Barclays Premier League
Manchester United v West Ham United
Old Trafford
Wednesday 29 October
8pm
Referee: Peter Walton

WHUTV - Full audio commentary

Introduction

* West Ham United travel to Manchester United for their fifth away fixture
of the 2008/09 Barclays Premier League season. An away win would move the
club level with their hosts on 15 points.

* The Hammers go into the game on the back of three straight defeats. Having
won two games in a row against Newcastle United and Fulham, the side lost
their 100 per cent home record to Bolton Wanderers, before losses at Hull
City and, most recently, at home to Arsenal on 26 October.

* After the weekend's games, West Ham United are tenth in the Barclays
Premier League with four wins and five defeats and a goal difference of
minus two. Champions Manchester United are sixth with four wins and three
draws from their first eight games and a goal difference of plus eight.

* West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola said: "It's never a good time to
play Manchester United but we have to play them - we respect them but we
don't fear them. We are going to go there and play our game and we are going
to try to win the game as we always try to. I'll be certainly telling the
players that it is a tough match but in football everything is possible. We
respect them but we will play our game and then we will see."

* The last meeting between the sides was in May at Old Trafford when the
hosts ran out 4-1 winners. In the reverse fixture at the Boleyn Ground last
season West Ham United secured a memorable 2-1 victory as Matthew Upson
scored the winner - his first goal for the club.

* That result meant the team from east London had beaten the Red Devils
three times in a row following 1-0 wins at the Boleyn Ground and Old
Trafford - the latter on the 2006/07 final day to ensure the club's Premier
League status was secured.

* The guests will be hoping to keep their first clean since the 1-0 win at
Fulham in February.

* West Ham United are next in top-flight action on Saturday with another
away trip, this time the Riverside to face Middlesbrough. Manchester United
play host to Hull City the same day.

Last time out

Sunday 26 October - West Ham United 0-2 Arsenal
West Ham United: Green, Faubert, Collins, Upson, Ilunga, Mullins, Parker
(Boa Morte 77), Bowyer (Sears 89), Di Michele (Etherington 78), Bellamy,

Subs not used: Kuszczak, Neville, O'Shea, Evans
Goal: Fletcher 22.

Team news

* Valon Behrami is set to return after missing the Arsenal match with a
slight groin problem, although Lucas Neill will not travel because of the
virus that kept him out of the Arsenal game.

* Carlton Cole starts a three-match ban after his red card in that match,
while Mark Noble could be out for at least three more weeks with a calf
tear.

* James Collins, Lee Bowyer and Hayden Mullins will be vying to keep their
places after impressing against Arsenal, while Matthew Etherington, Luis Boa
Morte and Freddie Sears - all used off the bench on Sunday - could be in
line to replace Cole.

* Diego Tristan will not feature as he continues to work on his fitness,
although Zola has been impressed with his progress in training and he may be
in contention for the weekend.

* Jonathan Spector was at the Boleyn Ground for Sunday's match and has
resumed training this week. James Tomkins is back in full training after his
medial knee ligament injury suffered in the summer.

* Kieron Dyer continues to build up his fitness and is expected to begin
full training in three weeks. Danny Gabbidon is working hard at Chadwell
Heath as he continues his recovery from an abdominal injury. Dean Ashton has
begun his early rehabilitation from his left ankle injury.

* Manchester United will be hoping that midfielder Michael Carrick will be
fit to face his former club following an ankle injury. Paul Scholes remains
the only long-term absentee.

Background

* The last meeting of the clubs was Manchester United's 4-1 win on 3 May
this year.

The lineups were:

Manchester United: Van der Sar, Hargreaves, Brown, Ferdinand, Evra, Nani
(sent off 37) Carrick, Scholes (O'Shea, 72), Park (Giggs 61), Ronaldo
(Fletcher 64), Tevez

West Ham United: Green, Pantsil, Tomkins, Neill, McCartney, Noble, Parker,
Mullins (Sears 75), Boa Morte (Solano 52), Ashton (Cole 56), Zamora
Subs not used: Walker, Collison

* Although not expected to feature, Spector would be facing the club where
he began his professional career.

* Manchester United could name three former West Ham United players in their
starting XI. Rio Ferdinand played 158 times for the club after graduating
from the Academy. Carrick, another homegrown player, made 159 appearances,
scoring six goals.

* Former Hammer of the Year Carlos Tevez only spent one season - 2006/07- at
the Boleyn Ground but became a firm fans' favourite after scoring seven
goals, including the winner at Old Trafford in his last game in a claret and
blue jersey.

* West Ham United have enjoyed good form against their hosts in recent
seasons - winning three and losing three of the last six, including a
'double' over them in the 2006/07 season.

Foulness in football
KUMB.com

Lawyers representing 15 former and current Sheffield United players have
been instructed to sue West Ham United for loss of earnings. The latest
example of sheer, breathtaking greed by those attached to Sheffield United
FC is revealed in today's Mail who claim that the group, assisted by Chris
Farnell of IPS Law, have instructed a 'leading sports lawyer' to represent
them in a compensation case said to be worth around £5million.

Sheffield United FC have already stunned football by their outrageous
damages claim of some £30million in the wake of their 'victory' at a recent
arbitration panel hearing - a figure that could yet rise if Blades chairman
Kevin McCabe (whose 'Fairness In Football' campaign has been made a mockery
of by recent events) decides to file for further 'losses'.

The players, say the Mail, held talks with Sheffield United officials before
deciding to move for compensation; how they intend to pursue their case
remains a mystery although it is probably safe to assume that they, like the
club they represent, will seek to blame West Ham United - and Carlos Tevez
in particular - for their failure to secure enough points to prevent
relegation in 2006/07.

West Ham United are yet to comment on this latest development.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson may recall midfielder Michael
Carrick for the visit of West Ham. The England international has only played
70 minutes of football this season due to an ankle problem but he returned
to training last week.
West Ham will be without the suspended Carlton Cole who was sent off against
Arsenal on Sunday. Mark Noble is out with a calf injury, while the game may
have come too soon for new striker Diego Tristan.

Man Utd (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Foster, Brown, Neville, Rafael,
Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, Evra, O'Shea, Carrick, Ronaldo, Park, Fletcher,
Anderson, Giggs, Nani, Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez.

West Ham (from): Green, Faubert, Neill, Upson, Ilunga, Behrami, Parker, Di
Michele, Bellamy, Etherington, Sears, Lastuvka, Lopez, Boa Morte, Mullins,
Davenport, Bowyer, Collins.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson: "Rio Ferdinand's best years are in
front of him. He has leadership qualities and we are really starting to see
maturity in his game. "We always knew that he was good at taking the ball
out of defence because he has such wonderful balance and great pace. "Now we
are seeing more edge to his game and more of a contribution in terms of
being voluble towards his team-mates. He is much better at that."

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola: "We respect Manchester United but we do
not fear them. It is a difficult moment for us, but from these times good
teams come out. "I feel really bad about it. I have never seen a team play
so well but get no points from three matches. "I know in football things can
change very quickly, so we just need to keep our game right and then
everything will be better. We feel we will go there to play our own game and
to win."

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Champions Manchester United have won their last four in all competitions at
Old Trafford, but know they will not return to the top four, even if
opponents West Ham suffered a fourth successive league defeat.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side are eight points behind Liverpool at the summit
with a game in hand, and will want to return to winning ways, having been
held by Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Victory for the Hammers would take them level on points with the Red Devils.

The Eastenders started promisingly under Gianfranco Zola, but now are in
danger of slumping to their longest losing league sequence since March 2007
when they lost five on the spin in Alan Curbishley's first 12 games in
charge. His reign started with just one victory in the opening dozen, that
being 1-0, home to Manchester United.

West Ham have dropped more Premier League points to Manchester United than
any other club (59).

Distance between the clubs: 211 miles (339 kilometres)

Valon Behrami is set to return for the Hammers when they face Manchester
United tomorrow night. The 23-year-old Swiss international missed Sunday's
2-0 defeat against Arsenal after complaining of a tight groin, and was
subsequently pulled out of the squad as a precautionary measure. However he
has since been given the all clear and is part of the squad that travels to
Manchester to face the reigning league Champions. Definitely out though are
Lucas Neill (virus), Diego Tristan (unfit), Mark Noble (calf) and Carlton
Cole, whose three-match suspension will keep him out of action until
United's home clash with Portsmouth next month. Meanwhile Gianfranco Zola is
still without the likes of Kieron Dyer, Dean Ashton, Danny Gabbidon and Jon
Spector who are all long-term injuries.

West Ham Utd: likely starting XI

Green; Faubert, Ilunga, Upson, Collins; Mullins, Parker, Behrami,
Etherington; Di Michele, Bellamy.

A round-up of the latest titbits regarding West Ham United ...

* St Patricks Athletic have denied rumours that West Ham have reached an
agreement to sign midfielder Keith Fahey in the January transfer window.
Manger Johnny McDonnell told the Irish media "it's very straightforward; we
have had no bids for Keith."

* Youth team captain John Payne has extended his stay with League One outfit
Cheltenham Town by a further month. 17-year-old Payne joined former Hammers
midfielder Martin Allen's new club last month and impessed enough to earn a
second spell.

* West Ham United have announced that half-season tickets will be on sale
from November 3rd. Around 2,000 tickets - which start at £375 for adults -
will be made available.

* Youth team striker Balint Bajner is back in the UK after helping the
Hungarian under 19s qualify for next summer's European under 18
chapionships. Bajner, who played in all three games in the mini-tournament
hit a hat-trick against minnows San Marino.

* Former Hammer Freddie Ljungberg is set to join MLS outfit Seattle
Sounders. He told Swedish newspaper Sport-Expressen "it feels great and I am
delighted to be here."

* Former Hammer Michael Carrick could make his long-awaited comeback against
Gianfranco Zola's side at Old Trafford tomorrow night. Carrick, one of three
former Hammers now plying their trade for the current league champions has
played just 70 minutes of football thus far this season due to an ankle
injury.

* KUMB.com understands that Miranda Nagalingam, the media officer
responsible for banning us from attending post-match press conferences one
year ago tomorrow has finally been fired. Nagalingam, formerly of Norwich
City was suspended by the club in July following an incident that took place
during the club's tour of North America.

Non-executive director Mike Lee has said that West Ham United FC is not for
sale. Lee, speaking in an interview with Five Live this morning spoke to
reassure supporters concerned about the club's future. Despite numerous
stories claiming that current owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is looking to
sell up at the earliest opportunity, Lee claimed that there was no truth in
the rumours, adding that Gudmundsson remained full committed to the club. He
also confirmed that the club fully intend to fight the recent arbitration
panel's ruling in favour of Sheffield United, stating that the decision was
one 'we cannot accept, and one football cannot accept'.

Zola's Old Trafford dilemma
KUMB.com

Gianfranco Zola has a striker dilemma ahead of tomorrow's Premier League
clash with Manchester United. West Ham United have confirmed that they do
not intend to appeal against Carlton Cole's straight red card in the closing
stages of Sunday's 2-0 defeat against Arsenal, meaning that the big striker
will sit out the Old Trafford clash through suspension. With Dean Ashton
already sidelined for the remainder of the season, Zola is left with only
Craig Bellamy, rookie Freddie Sears and veteran loanees David Di Michele and
Diego Tristan to choose from. Fortunately for Zola, Bellamy - who started
his first home game in over a year against Arsenal at the weekend - came
through the match unscathed and is raring to go. However the problem is who
to play in the target man role, should Zola persist with his 4-3-3
formation; Sears, despite scoring for fun in the reserves and youth team is
clearly not ready for the Premier League whilst Di Michele also appears to
be struggling despite scoring a brace against Newcastle on his debut. That
means Zola could yet turn to Spanish striker Tristan, who is said to be some
weeks away from full fitness despite having undergone a gruelling fitness
regime since officially joining the club a fortnight ago. Alternatively,
Zola could go with Luis Boa Morte as an emergency option. Talking about the
forthcoming game, Bellamy told whufc.com: "It's nice to be looking forward
to the next match and be involved with that," he said. "After last season I
am just happy to be playing again. "I haven't had that opportunity for a
long while, to have played and then be looking to play again in the next
game, so that is great for me."

Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me

Alan Curbishley has claimed that the press had it in for him in the weeks
leading up to his resignation. The former Hammers boss walked out on the
club he had managed for just under two years at the beginning of September
in protest at the present board's asset-stripping policy, which saw them
sell Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney to Sunderland towards the end of
the summer transfer window only to replace them with cheap, foreign imports.
Talking in an interview with Setanta Sports regarding the club's new
European set-up, Curbishley blamed the press for the negative publicity he
received in his final months at the Boleyn.
"It's common in every club abroad where the manager coaches the team and
deals with that, and the chairman and sports director deal with all the
players coming in," he said. "I brought in Nani at West Ham and I got
criticised when I spoke about it. It opened my eyes up a little bit and I
was criticised by certain members of the press who were after me anyway. "I
brought Nani in for his big forte, his scouting network which was very
successful at Brescia.West Ham decided they wanted a football director and I
did have an input on the guy who came in. "Unfortunately, we only worked
together [briefly] before I left."
Curbishley, still out of work despite being linked with the Charlton,
Tottenham, Newcastle and Portsmouth jobs in recent weeks admitted that he
would be preparedto go back into management - even if it meant working under
a director of football againa. "Foreign players make up perhaps 50% of the
players in the Premier League and one manager cannot cope with what's going
on with the scouting system," he added. "If there's a role of buying and
selling players, it becomes very difficult for a manager if he's relying on
those players week in and week out and is responsible for the results. If I
got offered a job and there was a sporting director already in place, I'd
know what I was in for when I go in. If I go into a club and there wasn't a
sporting director there, I'd have one or two things to think about."
Non-executive director Mike Lee, talking about Curbishley's departure on
Five Live last night cconfirmed that the final straw for Curbishley was the
club's decision to sell George McCartney to Sunderland. "Alan didn't
particularly want to sell certain players but we needed to raise money - he
knew that, he was committed to that policy," said Lee. "The one player in
the end that seemed to force the issue was McCartney. The problem the club
had with George McCartney, very late in the day, right at the end of the
transfer window, there was a domestic family issue about his wife wanting to
move back to the North East. "He put in a written transfer request, we had
an offer on the table and we also had alternatives. That was the one Alan
thought was unacceptable - so he chose to resign."

Zola - We don't fear United
SSN
Good football will make the difference, says Hammers boss
By Claire Hughes Last updated: 28th October 2008

West Ham United will walk out at Manchester United on Wednesday with no
fear, according to manager Gianfranco Zola. Old Trafford is usually the last
place a team wants to visit after three successive defeats. But Zola
believes that his side are going to the defending champions with a healthy
dose of respect - and nothing to fear.
"We do respect them but we don't fear them. We are going to go there and
play our game. We are going to try to win the game as we always do that," he
told the club's official website. "I'll be certainly telling them that it is
a tough match but in football everything is possible. We are a good team and
I believe that we can do that. We respect them but we will play our game and
we will see."
Zola's managerial philosophy is that playing good football leads to good
results - despite their recent run of defeats. But the Italian believes that
just one result will revert the trend and get things back on track. He said:
"It never happened to me that I saw a team playing that well and then not
getting any points for three matches. "I know that in football things can
change quickly. We just need a game to get it right and then everything will
be better. It's a good starting point to play well, results are a
consequence of that. That's my philosophy and I will pursue it. "The way we
are playing suits the team very well and just have to accept that sometimes
there are bad moments and things don't go your way."
The good news for the Hammers' boss ahead of Wednesday's trip to Old
Trafford is that Swiss international midfielder Valon Behrami will be back
after a groin problem. But captain Lucas Neill, who has been suffering with
a virus, will miss out again, leaving Matthew Upson to lead the team in his
absence. The other key absentee is striker Carlton Cole, who has been given
a three-match ban after being sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Manchester United aim to make up ground
The Times
Ferguson's side are eight points adrift of Liverpool in the Premier League
James Ducker

Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, would probably have wanted
less difficult opponents than West Ham United this evening, after his team
slipped eight points behind Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League at the
weekend. In the wake of the disappointing 1-1 draw away to Everton on
Satur-day, United will view victory against Gianfranco Zola's team at Old
Trafford as a necessity as they look to claw back ground on the leaders, but
while West Ham have suffered three successive defeats, they have beaten the
champions in three of their past four meetings. If there was a positive for
Ferguson to take from the match at Goodison Park, it was the performance of
Darren Fletcher. As some of his more illustrious team-mates struggled,
Fletcher capped another fine display with his third goal of the season.
Although he signed a new four-year deal with United this month, the Scotland
midfield player came close to leaving the club in the summer after
expressing a wish for more first-team football. Everton, Sunderland, Celtic
and Rangers were eager to sign the 24-year-old, but with injuries to Owen
Hargreaves, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick having left a void at the heart
of United's midfield for much of this season, it is little wonder that
Ferguson is so relieved that he persuaded the player to stay.
"Fletcher signing a new contract has probably been the relief of the season
for us because there were a lot of clubs trying to buy him," the United
manager said. "He had one year left on his contract and he wanted more
football than he got last season. "I could easily have made that
consideration [that Fletcher could go] simply because in Hargreaves,
Carrick, Scholes and Anderson we have so many central midfielders. But
Darren's a United player and in big games he's outstanding. "He played in
most of the big games last season and I think that convinced him to stay.
Now, with the injuries we've had, we're seeing he's such an important player
for us."
Carrick is expected to play some part against West Ham, his former club,
after 6½ weeks out with a broken bone in a foot. West Ham are without
Carlton Cole, the striker, who was sent off against Arsenal on Sunday, as
well as Mark Noble, the midfield player, who has a calf injury.

Zola makes case for the defence
7:38pm Tuesday 28th October 2008
Echo
By Rob Pritchard »

GIANFRANCO Zola believes that while it may not arrive at Manchester United
on Wednesday evening, West Ham United's first clean sheet of the season is
just around the corner. The Hammers have not managed to shut out their
opponents for an amazing 21 Premier League games - a run stretching back to
their 1-0 win at Fulham on February 23. During that eight month period,
League Two Macclesfield Town and Championship side Watford have also
breached the Irons' back-line during Carling Cup ties. But, despite his
side's defensive struggles, manager Zola is adamant his goalkeeper Robert
Green and defenders are not performing badly. "If you analyse the last three
matches - forget about Arsenal today as we played Arsenal - but in the other
matches (against Bolton Wanderers and Hull City) the defensive part of the
game was not that bad," he insisted. "We didn't concede much. "We conceded
goals but there were a few occasions but in general I am happy with the way
the defence is working. "We are going to be alright, I am 100% convinced
about this. "We have a few problems but we are going to be sorting them
out."
Among Zola's defensive problems is the absence of captain Lucas Neill with a
stomach virus that kept him out of Sunday's home defeat to Arsenal and will
do likewise at Old Trafford tonight. Meanwhile, normally reliable goalkeeper
Robert Green made two glaring errors against Bolton and was lucky not to be
sent-off after handling the ball a yard outside his penalty area against the
Gunners.

No Hammers bid for Fahey

By Rob Pritchard »

WEST Ham United have yet to make a formal bid for St Patrick's Athletic
midfielder Keith Fahey. Irishman Fahey, who began his career at Arsenal
before making a solitary Intertoto Cup appearance for Aston Villa, scored in
front of Hammers' scouts in Friday's FAI Ford Cup semi-final between St
Pat's and Bohemians. Fahey scored his side's goal in a 3-1 defeat, but
manager Johnny McDonnell revealed that the club had yet to receive an
approach from the Irons. He said: "It's very straightforward. We have had no
bids for Keith." Fahey, 25, is a former Republic of Ireland youth
international.

Sheffield United players chase £5million compensation over Tevez scandal
By Sportsmail Reporter

Daily Mail

Sheffield United's players want more than £5million in compensation after
their relegation from the Barclays Premier League in May 2007. Fifteen
players have instructed a leading sports lawyer to pursue their claim for a
loss of earnings in the wake of the Carlos Tevez scandal. Sheffield are
already demanding more than £30m after an independent FA tribunal concluded
that they should be compensated by West Ham. But the players have held a
series of discussions with Bramall Lane officials, as well as
representatives from the PFA, and have subsequently joined forces with Chris
Farnell of IPS Law in demanding up to a year's money per player.
Mick McGuire, deputy chief executive of the PFA, said the players' union
were following the case with 'interest'.

Noble: Man Utd clash will test West Ham character
29.10.08 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham midfielder Mark Noble says they face a test of character against
Manchester United tonight. The 21-year-old has been almost ever-present for
the Hammers this season and hopes he can help spring another upset, just
like on the closing day of the 2006/07 season. "On that day, and in the last
10 games of that season, we really gelled together," Noble told the Reds'
matchday programme, United Review. "As much as United had chances, we
defended really well and deserved to win the match. "The big games against
teams like United test your character; the bigger the game, the more
experience you get. You can challenge yourself and be a better player for
it. "The derbies and matches against United, Liverpool, Arsenal and
Tottenham are all fixtures I look out for at the start of the season."
