The Hammers and The Somme - 100 years on
WHUFC.com

13th (Service) Battalion of the Essex Regiment - the West Ham Pals - fought
at The Somme
Thousands of east London and Essex-born men enlisted to fight for their
country
The Battle of the Somme began in northern France on 1 July 2016
Among the millions of men who fought in the Great War was a group of east
London lads who came to be known as the 'West Ham Pals'. Boxing Day 2014
marked exactly 100 years since the birth of the 13th (Service) Battalion of
the Essex Regiment – the West Ham Regiment.

On a bitterly cold evening, the Mayor of West Ham, Henry Dyer, cleared his
throat and read out a letter from the War Office detailing their
requirements: just over a thousand local men aged between 19 and 35 who were
prepared to enlist in the Army for a minimum of three years 'or for the
duration of the War'.

When the call went out, the response was immediate. By January 1915, 300 men
had volunteered and by March, the unit was complete. They undertook their
training locally, marching along Green Street during the week when riots
broke out around Upton Park and east London targeting foreign-named
businesses in response to the German sinking of the passenger ship
Lusitania.

The youngest Private was 15-years-old and one of many underage youngsters to
join up, while the oldest Private was 47. Their battle cry was 'Up The
Hammers!' although some former employees of the Thames Ironworks preferred
to shout 'Up The Irons!' as they practised bayonet attacks. They got fit
playing football in West Ham Park and relaxed with invitations as a whole
Battalion to the cinema to see the latest movies. They really were the
'Pride of West Ham'.

The West Ham Pals sailed to France together in November 1915 on the
steamship Princess Victoria and from that moment on they were seldom 'out
the Line'. They served their whole War alongside The Footballers, a
battalion made up of volunteers from the world of professional football.

On the Hammers' first Christmas in the trenches they were cheered up when
they heard that West Ham United had beaten Arsenal 8-2 in the Southern
Combination League match on Christmas Day here at the Boleyn Ground, with
Syd Puddefoot scoring five goals.

The West Ham Pals fought bravely at The Somme

The following year saw them suffer incredible punishment on The Somme – a
battle which began 100 years ago on 1 July 2016 – where so many of the
Original volunteer Officers and Men were killed, often with 'No Known
Grave'.

At the start of the battle, the West Ham Battalion were in a happy mood at
this time, as overnight between 1 and 2 July they conducted a very
successful trench raid on the German lines which had resulted in the
awarding of three Military Crosses, a Distinguished Conduct Medal and a
clutch of the Military Medal for the Hammers.

At the end of July, the West Ham Battalion were on the Somme and engaged in
blocking the almost suicidal counter-attacks being made by the Germans
against Deville Wood.

'The Devil's Wood', as it was known by the British soldiers, was a
desperately hellish place to be. Many Hammers were killed over their few
days in the frontline, not many have known graves.

Those that do were brought in by West Ham Pal Norman Bellinger and his
stretcher bearers. Bellinger was seen to be tireless, as all he cared about
was getting those men off that horrendous battlefield.

We will never know how many men he saved or who today have a known grave
thanks to him and others, but Bellinger's actions were enough for him to be
awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Among those to perish in the horrors of the Somme were brothers George and
Rupert Barlex of Barking – two of eight siblings – while Laurie Legg of
Leytonstone, Edwin Milward Charrington, Hugh Cardinal-Harford, Charlie
Gladding, and Samuel Herbert Legerton, among hundreds of others, also served
with honour and, mercifully, survived the battle.

A plaque honouring the West Ham Pals will hang at the New Stadium
By 1917, the Pals were still in the thick of it and suffered even more
losses during a failed attack on the village of Oppy at the end of April, on
the very same day that West Ham United were crowned champions of the
Southern Combination League. The year 1917 ended with their epic 'Last
Stand' at Moeuvres during the Battle of Cambrai, an event so heroic it made
the front pages back home in England.

Finally, in February 1918, like so many Kitchener Battalions, they were
disbanded during Army reshuffles. The West Ham lads were sent to other units
and sadly many of them were killed before the Armistice.

We should always, of course, remember their sacrifices.

First Champions Place stone installed
WHUFC.com

The very first Champions Place stone has now been installed on Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park, in the presence of the family who commissioned it.
Champions Place, a specially-designed landscaped walkway at the north
entrance of West Ham United's new home, enables supporters to see their very
own tributes immortalised alongside Hammers legends. Earlier this week, the
first of many thousand granite stones was laid. Dawn Scott's son, Oliver,
tragically passed away in 2011 and the family were keen to honour his memory
at the site of London Stadium. Dawn, together with Oliver's siblings Max
and Mia, were invited to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to mark the poignant
moment for the Scott family. We will treasure this forever," Dawn told West
Ham TV. "We love every memory of Oliver and we try to keep him alive, and
this is just the best. "I just can't believe that we're here and it was just
wonderful. I know Oliver would have loved every minute of it. "He [Oliver]
was always centre of attention, I'm afraid, this would definitely be his
sort of day and he's even brought the sunshine!"

While the first installation of stones is now underway and will be complete
in time for the start of the season, supporters can still order Champions
Place stones of their own, joining a timeless tribute to Hammers heroes and
faithful fans. These will be installed in a second phase to follow in due
course. To order a Champions Place stone, visit
www.championsplace.whufc.com. An ardent Hammer, Oliver's tribute will now
forever sit outside the Hammers' home and he will be in good company, in
close quarters to a legends stone celebrating West Ham's 1965 European Cup
Winners' Cup success. In each designated section, the centrepiece legends
stone will be the last to be laid, with Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin
Peters, Billy Bonds and European Cup Winners' Cup stones now all on site
ahead of installation in the coming days and weeks. Dawn continued: "He
would have been very proud, he was a keen West Ham fan from early on. His
dad and his brother would come to as many as matches as they could. He was
just proud to be a West Ham United fan. "It's a permanent tribute and a lot
of our family friends will be coming here, not just looking at Oliver's, but
it's lovely to see other people's stones as well."

Knoyle joins Latics on loan
WHUFC.com

Young West Ham right-back Kyle Knoyle has joined Championship outfit Wigan
Athletic on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old England youth international,
who joined the Hammers as a 13-year-old, made 15 appearances for the
Development Squad last season, before gaining valuable first-team experience
on loan at Dundee United. Having impressed during his time with the
Tangerines, where he made eleven appearances, the highly rated full-back has
now joined the newly-promoted Latics. His first competitive game for manager
Gary Caldwell's side could be the opening day of the new season away at
Bristol City on Saturday 6 August. Knoyle is the latest West Ham player to
go out on loan, following George Dobson joining Walsall and Jaanai Gordon at
Sligo Rovers.

From the Boardroom - David Gold
WHUFC.com

The players are back for the start of pre-season training and like everyone
I am extremely excited about the start of the new season. This is one of the
biggest in the Club's history and we are moving into a fabulous new Stadium
and our new home. We go there with a great season behind us and some
exciting new players coming into the squad. We have already signed Havard
Nordtveit and Sofiane Feghouli and we must remember that Manuel Lanzini is a
new signing as well as we have converted his loan into a permanent move. We
already have a strong squad and the young players coming through add even
more quality. We have Reece Burke back at the Club following his memorable
loan spell at Bradford last season where he won seven awards. He will be
part of the team going to America and becomes a serious contender for a
place in the first-team squad.
All the younger players who played in the Europa League last season have now
got even more experience over the last 12 months and it looks very promising
for the Club. Players like Reece Oxford, Martin Samuelsen, Josh Cullen,
Marcus Browne and Lewis Page will all have the chance to impress during the
next few weeks. We will also wait for more new signings to arrive before the
transfer window closes at the end of August. There are still two months to
go and I would urge all our fans not to get anxious. We have already made
three new signings and there are a few more to come.
We should all remain confident that the recruiting team headed by David
Sullivan and Slaven Bilic will deliver once again with the players that we
need. The players are now heading off on tour to the USA where the fan base
is growing all the time and it bodes well for the future of the football
club. I'm bombarded by fans sending me messages from America telling me they
want to see West Ham in action and I am sure going to Seattle and North
Carolina will only add to our fan base.
I was thrilled to see Mark Noble officially open the new Club Store last
week at the new Stadium. The new state-of-the-art store looks magnificent
and will be open seven days a week as 1,200 new product lines will be
available for sale. I am sure all the West Ham fans have been very proud of
what our players have been doing at the European Championship Finals.

I wish Dimitri Payet, James Collins and Angelo Ogbonna the best of luck in
the knockout stages and they are flying the flag for West Ham. It has been a
disappointing week with England going out but we still have a big interest
in what our players are doing.

Squad returns for pre-season
KUMB.com

West Ham United's first team squad returned for pre-season training this
morning - minus one or two notable faces. Whilst new arrivals Sofiane
Feghouli and Havard Nordtveit signed in at Chadwell Heath for the first -
and last - time due to the impending move to Rush Green, some of West Ham's
Euro 16 stars were absent. Dimitri Payet (France), James Collins (Wales) and
Angelo Ogbonna (Italy) are all still involved in the tournament and will
therefore join up with the squad once they return from the club's US tour.
And one or two others who have been involved in international competition
since the end of last season - such as Enner Valencia, who represented
Ecuador in the Copa America - have also been excused duty. Michail Antonio,
who moved to West Ham from Nottingham Forest last August was also absent as
his partner is due to give birth shortly.
Of course, the squad's return to Chadwell Heath will prove to be shortlived
- for they fly to the United States tomorrow ahead of the first of two
friendlies and by the time they return, the club's training base will have
moved to the club's Rush Green site. "When we return from our pre-season
trip, we will train at our newly-redeveloped facility at Rush Green," Stijn
Vandenbroucke told whufc.com. "Slaven, his staff, myself and my team have
had a big role in designing the new training ground and the flow is very
good for the staff and players, and an immense improvement on Chadwell
Heath."

Payet happy at West Ham, says agent
KUYMB.com
Filed: Friday, 1st July 2016
By: Staff Writer

Dimitri Payet's agent has scotched rumours that his client is set to join
Real Madrid by insisting he is happy at West Ham. Jacques-Olivier Auguste,
who represents Payet, revealed this morning that Payet had not even
considered leaving West Ham, whom he joined a year ago this month. And he
laughed off speculative reports linking the 29-year-old with a move to
Spanish giants Real, insisting that Payet had no intention of leaving West
Ham - as things stand. "He has a good contract at West Ham," said Auguste.
"Dimitri is happy in London. In football you never know [what might happen],
but only West Ham know what price they might decide to sell at."
Payet, who has wowed audiences this summer with his performances at Euro 16
joined West Ham for just £10.7million last summer in a deal that, in
retrospect, has to be considered as one of the deals of the decade. The
mercurial French international will miss West Ham's pre-season tour of the
US but can next be seen in action when France take on Inceland in the
quarter finals of Euro 16 this weekend (Sunday).

IF I OWNED WEST HAM-EXCLUSIVE INSIDE INFO FROM A TOP ITK
BY EXWHUEMPLOYEE ON 30 JUNE 2016 AT 9:12PM
TheWestHamWay.co.uk

If I owned the club I reckon we may have had our striker already, or we
would be closer. I will cut the board some slack, as I do not think
Batshuayi is a superstar or someone who will get 25 goals. 110k a week and
38m euros is huge money for someone who only got 17 goals in the league last
year!! Chelsea came in and how do you really compete with them? Michy has
also said he wanted to stay at Marseille and feels the need to stay there as
he is not great every game. This is worrying, as you want someone who wants
to come and has confindece in their ability. For me he is far from top of
the list and if we could pull one of our other targets off that would be
better. The more I look at Bacca, the more I think he would be a great
addition. If we sold Enner, Bacca would be a perfect replacement. He is
fast, small and can score goals – he has done so his whole career. Janssen
would also be another player I would look at and he is the best value for
money. Of course people still talk about Lacazette and Benteke, however I
think they've gone too quiet recently and can't see them joining. However
the other two I would be over the moon with.

I spoke in my column last week about who I would get rid of at the club, so
I will do that now. Doneil Henry, Stephen Hendrie, Diego Poyet and Elliot
Lee are the players from the under 21's that for me have no future at our
club and won't get a look in next year. Henry is one of seven CB's at the
club and I cannot see him getting in the team, and therefore it is unfair
not to find him a club. I've seen him and for me he is not premier league
standard! Hendrie is someone I feel sorry for, but he has struggled to make
the grade at the top level, although I wish he could as he would be a
perfect back-up. He did very well at Southend (loan move), however Bilic has
shown he does not rate him. I am pleased to see him get a loan move to
Blackburn so he can go and prove he is good enough to be a back-up. Poyet
is someone we have had for two years and someone who has also struggled. I
watched him during our games against the Maltese side and also the Andorran
side, and in both he failed to impress. He was also at MK Dons and
Charlton, and both teams got relegated to league 1. Sadly I think he is a
championship player! Lee has left and for me that was the right decision –
he was someone the fans loved but he could never really do it when he went
out on loan. He should have been someone special, but sadly didn't turn out
that way!

Other players in the first team I personally would let go would be Sakho and
Enner. Both for me do not get enough goals! Sakho also wants to leave and
has had a troublesome time in his personal life. For me the last thing you
want is someone that doesn't want to be there. I think we may have a
problem with Obaing and Tomkins; it has been spoken about that they may want
to leave and both are far from starters under Bilic. However, I would
imagine that both want first team football and both can get this at a high
level. Personally I don't believe Tomkins going is the end of the world,
due to Burke and Oxford coming through! Kouyate and Nordtveit can both play
CB, and therefore there is no shortage. Obaing for me would be a loss; I
personally rate him highly and cannot see us getting better than him as a
back-up.

I hope you enjoyed my column.

Man Utd striker Ashley Fletcher to undergo West Ham medical - Sky sources
By Sky Sports News HQ

Manchester United striker Ashley Fletcher will undergo a medical at West Ham
ahead of a proposed move to the Olympic Stadium, Sky sources understand. The
20-year-old's current contract at Old Trafford expires this summer and will
be allowed to move to the Hammers on a free transfer. However, if a deal is
completed, United will be due a compensation fee as Fletcher came through
the club's youth system. He will become West Ham manager Slaven Bilic's
fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Sofiane Feghouli, Toni
Martinez, Havard Nordtveit and Domingos Quina. Fletcher, who joined United
in 2012, spent the second half of last season on loan at Sky Bet League One
side Barnsley and helped them secure promotion via the play-offs. He scored
inside two minutes at Wembley as Barnsley defeated Millwall 3-1 to claim a
place in the Sky Bet Championship. Fletcher, who has scored two in two
matches for England U20s, netted nine times in 27 appearances during his
loan spell at Barnsley.

West Ham transfer news: Dimitri Payet 'happy' to remain in London, says
agent
The Frenchman's agent expects West Ham will keep hold of their star man
Samuel Lovett
The Independent

Dimitri Payet will remain at West Ham next season and is "happy in London",
according to his agent Jacques-Olivier Auguste. Despite being linked with a
number of top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Inter Milan, Auguste
expects the 29-year-old to stay put. The Frenchman signed a contract in
February worth an estimated £125,000 a week which is due to run out in 2021.
Payet moved to West Ham last summer in a £10.7m transfer deal but in light
of his fantastic form throughout the past year and at Euro 2016, his
valuation is expected to have risen towards the £60m mark.
Speaking to the Guardian, Auguste said: "He has a great contract with West
Ham so I cannot see him leaving. Dimitri is happy in London." "You never
know in football but only West Ham know what price they want if they decide
to sell him."
On the back of an outstanding season at West Ham, in which he scored 12
goals in all competitions, Payet was named in the PFA Team of the Year and
has emerged as one of Europe's most highly-coveted players. Real Madrid
manager recently Zinedine Zidane praised the player as "one of the most
important players in Europe" who could "improve any side". The Spanish side
have a history of talking up their transfer targets before moving to sign
them as they did with Luka Modric and Gareth Bale. But Madrid are not alone
in their interest after Inter Milan openly expressed their desire to bring
the Frenchman to the San Siro. "As a fan, I would love to see Payet in an
Inter shirt," said the honorary president Massimo Moratti. "We are missing
two to three players to be competitive. The important thing is to have solid
players that ensure continuity."

Hope for Leeds United as West Ham reportedly consider loaning new striker
Ashley Fletcher
HITC
Dan Coombs

West Ham are set to seal the signing of Manchester United's Ashley Fletcher.
Ashley Fletcher is set to complete a surprise move from Manchester United to
West Ham today, claim The Mail. It is claimed Fletcher has agreed a
four-year contract with the Hammers, but could be loaned out. Fletcher is a
free agent, having rejected Manchester United's offer of a contract
extension. It is claimed he sees a quicker path to the first team at West
Ham rather than at Manchester United. Despite this, The Mail claim West Ham
are open to sending Fletcher out on loan for the season. This provides hope
for Championship side Leeds United, who the Yorkshire Evening Post reported
were optimistic of signing, either on loan or permanently. The Mail report
Leeds are, along with Barnsley, Wolves, Bristol City and Bradford, all keen
on the striker and would be be open to a loan deal. West Ham currently have
Enner Valencia, Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho up front, although the latter
could be sold. They have also made big bigs for strikers Alexandre Lacazette
and Michy Batshuayi this summer, and another big name coming in would
increase Fletcher's chances of being sent out on loan.

West Ham willing to sell Darren Randolph for £3m
HITC
Subhankar Mondal

Darren Randolph has been linked with a move away from West Ham United in the
summer transfer window. West Ham United are willing to let Darren Randolph
leave in the summer transfer window, according to The Sun. Randolph joined
West Ham in the summer of 2015 on a free transfer after leaving Birmingham
City at the end of the 2014-15 season. The Republic of Ireland international
is the second-choice goalkeeper behind Adrian at the Hammers. It has been
reported by The Sun that the 29-year-old's impressive performances at the
ongoing 2016 European Championship have sparked interest among a number of
Premier League and Championship clubs. According to the British tabloid,
West Ham manager Slaven Bilic will allow Randolph to leave the London club
this summer as long as they get a transfer fee of around £3 million. The
former Motherwell and Birmingham goalkeeper has two years left on his
current £22,000-a-week deal with the option of a further year at West Ham,
according to The Sun. Randolph kept one clean sheet in four appearances for
the Republic of Ireland at the Euro 2016 finals in France, making 3.25 saves
per game and 2.60 saves per goal on average. During the 2015-16 campaign,
the goalkeeper played in just six Premier League matches for West Ham,
keeping two clean sheets in the process.

Boost for Bilic as Mark Noble declares he would 'never leave' West Ham
HITC
Damien Lucas

Slaven Bilic has been handed a big boost ahead of the new season after
captain Mark Noble pledged the rest of his career to West Ham. The
28-year-old midfielder has spent his entire career with the Hammers, having
progressed through their youth season and into the first-team set-up. Since
making his debut in 2005, Noble has played 340 times for the East London
side, and his dedication was rewarded at the beginning of the season when
head coach Slaven Bilic named him captain. The club honoured him back in
March by giving him a testimonial against a West Ham All Stars squad at a
jam-packed Boleyn Ground. With Noble one of the stars of last season in
helping his club to a seventh place finish, their best ever Premier League
points tally and first positive goal difference in 30 years, bigger clubs
may have come sniffing. But the cultured midfielder, who was snubbed for
England's Euro 2016 squad by the now departed Roy Hodgson, has left Hammers
fans, staff and teammates in little doubt as to where his future lies in an
interview with a clothing website.

'I love this football club'

When asked 'Would you consider playing for anyone else?' by West Ham's new
official tailors Hawes & Curtis, Noble did not beat around the bush. "I
would never consider playing for anyone else!" the skipper told
hawesandcurtis.co.uk. "West Ham is my local club and I have played for them
since I was 17. I love this football club and I have signed another five
year contract." 'This time we're keeping the family silver' Hammers fans had
grown used to seeing their homegrown talent sold to the highest bidder over
the years, often to bitter rivals such as Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. But
under the stewardship of co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold that is no
longer the case with the likes of Noble a sure-fire bet to remain in East
London for the rest of his playing days.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Jack Sullivan hails impressive attitude of West Ham's new midfield duo
HITC
Damien Lucas

Jack Sullivan, the son of West Ham United co-owner David, has taken to
Twitter to praise the club's two summer signings. The Hammers have been busy
already this summer as their big move to the 60,000 seater Olympic Stadium
looms large. Slaven Bilic has completed the signings of Norwegian Havard
Nordtveit and Algerian winger Sofiane Feghouli as he looks to improve his
squad with the Europa League and raised expectations to cope with following
a fantastic first season at the Hammers helm. The Premier League is just
over a month away and the nation is still smarting after England's dismal
exit from Euro 2016. As a result the attitude and application of top players
is in vogue.

'Great attitude'

But if Sullivan's latest post on Twitter is anything to go by the Hammers
have nothing to worry about when it comes to their new recruits after they
showed impressive dedication this week. "Just been told that the two new
players have come in with a few others, for early training!" Sullivan posted
on Twitter. "Great news, great attitude."

Just been told that the 2 new players have come in with a few others, for
early training!! Great news, great attitude.
— Jack Sullivan (@jsullivanwhu) June 29, 2016

Bodes well for future

Sullivan went on to add that the new signings were joined by Andy Carroll,
who ended the season with a slight injury. It bodes well for the Bilic that
the new recruits are determined to hit the ground running. West Ham will
have to go some to better last season's seventh place finish given the
competitive nature of the Premier League and influx of some of the finest
managers on the planet. But with players willing to put in that bit extra,
and with the added quality in the squad, there is no reason why they can't.

Manchester United striker Ashley Fletcher is joining Premier League rivals
West Ham. The 20-year-old is a free agent after turning down a new contract
at Old Trafford and West Ham have moved to snap up the highly-rated
prospect. United will still demand compensation of around £500,000 for the
Yorkshire-born forward but will be disappointed to lose a player
highly-rated by U21's coach Warren Joyce. Fletcher held talks with the
London club on Thursday ahead of agreeing a four-year contract. He shot to
prominence last season with a five month loan spell at Barnsley where his
six goals, including one at Wembley in the 3-1 League One play-off final
against Millwall, helped secure promotion to the Championship.
United had made a proposal for him to stay but Fletcher is keen to make a
breakthrough and believes opportunities will be limited at Old Trafford. He
is already behind Marcus Rashford while Jose Mourinho will add Zlatan
Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund this weekend. West
Ham are keen to strengthen their squad with younger homegrown talent. They
have been struggling to fend off interest from the likes of United in
defender Reece Oxford as they strive to convince upcoming players there is a
path to the first team under Slaven Bilic. Fletcher is tall and quick and
has improved his finishing after taking private sessions with Superior
Striker coach Allan Russell who has worked with Saido Berahino, Andre Gray
and Martyn Waghorn. Leeds, Wolves, Bristol City and Barnsley have all
expressed a desire to sign him and West Ham may yet agree to loan him out to
ensure his development continues. Fletcher is also wanted by Bradford City
where his father Mick hails from. New manager Stuart McCall is keen on
bringing in a striker on loan to kick-start his promotion drive.
