Stoke next for reserves
WHUFC.com
Alex Dyer's side face their longest trip of the season on Monday night when
they travel to take on Stoke City
30.03.2009

Alex Dyer is in upbeat mood as his reserve team go to Stoke City tonight
looking to build on an excellent behind closed doors friendly last Friday.

The second string were 4-2 winners at Chelsea before the weekend, with
Junior Stanislas hitting a hat-trick against a side featuring the likes of
internationals Alex, Florent Malouda and Ricardo Quaresma. Stanislas will
not feature at Nantwich this evening - where Stoke play their reserve games
- because of an England Under-20 call.

Also, set to play is the promising defensive partnership of Holmar
Eyjolfsson and Bondz N'Gala, while the likes of Oliver Lee and Zavon Hines
will also get another chance to show their potential. It is not thought that
any established first-teamers will figure with midfielders Kieron Dyer, who
played just behind the front two, and Luis Boa Morte among a number who had
extended run-outs against Chelsea.

"Everyone is up for the Stoke match. We had a good training session on
Sunday and they are all in good spirits," said Dyer about the Barclays
Premier Reserve League encounter. "Friday's game was excellent from start to
finish and the senior boys all worked their hearts out. The youngsters did
really well especially as Chelsea had a good side out." The reserves have
not lost on their last two away games - a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa followed
by a 1-0 success away to Arsenal.

A trio of Young Lions
WHUFC.com
West Ham United could have three players involved for England Under-20s in a
major friendly on Tuesday
30.03.2009

James Tomkins, Junior Stanislas and Freddie Sears have all been preparing
hard with England for Tuesday night's mouthwatering Under-20 friendly
against Italy.

The Azzurrini will take on the Young Lions at the Loftus Road home of
Queen's Park Rangers with both sides taking the first steps ahead of the
FIFA U-20 World Cup later this summer. The West Ham United trio are all
hoping to impress in a squad that also boasts the likes of Manchester City's
Daniel Sturridge and Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs were put through their paces by
coach Noel Blake over the weekend and on Monday.

Tomkins, who turned 20 on Sunday, and 19-year-old Sears were both part of
the England team that reached last summer's UEFA European U19 Championship
while Stanislas, 19, has also been capped at that level. This will be their
first taste of U20 action, with the 18-year-old Jordan Spence, capped at
every level up to U19, also in with a shout of making it to the finals in
Egypt.

Speaking to theFA.com, Blake said: "The Italians have proved to be very
strong opposition at all levels of the game and we will learn a great deal
from the players involved, as they will be facing very formidable opponents.

"It is an important game in terms of us looking at the options we will have
available to us when the finals comes around in September. Having secured
qualification, our next aim is to prepare the players and look at the
various options that may or may not be available to us."

Reserves see off Stoke

A youthful reserve side ensured another Barclays Premier Reserve League
success on Monday night
30.03.2009

Stoke City reserves 0-2 West Ham United reserves

Goals from Anthony Edgar and Zavon Hines on Monday night sealed another
polished performance on the road for Alex Dyer's youthful second string.

The homegrown Hammers struck in the second half to make it three games
unbeaten on the road after a goalless draw at Aston Villa and a 1-0 success
away to Arsenal. With goalkeeper Peter Kurucz well protected by a back four
marshalled by Bondz N'Gala and Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson, Edgar strode forward
just before the hour to score with a tremendous strike before Hines
converted a late penalty he had earned.

Dyer was particularly delighted with his team after several had also
featured in a behind closed doors friendly against Chelsea on Friday. Edgar
had scored with a delightful effort in that 4-2 triumph after coming on for
Kieron Dyer to play at the attacking point of a midfield diamond. He played
the whole 90 minutes in the same position against Stoke and linked up well
with the tireless Balint Bajner and Hines.

Big night for Mehmet
WHUFC.com
Deniz Mehmet is looking to help Turkey qualify for the European Under-17
finals on Tuesday night
30.03.2009

West Ham United goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet goes into Tuesday's UEFA European
Under-17 Championship Elite Round qualifying match against Finland knowing
only victory will be enough to keep his native Turkey in with a chance of
reaching this summer's finals in Germany.

The Turks have drawn their opening two matches, battling back twice from a
goal down to draw 2-2 with Wales last Thursday before playing out a goalless
stalemate with Romania on Saturday. Mehmet, 16, played the full 80 minutes
in both matches.

Romania, who beat Finland 2-1 in their own opening fixture, are top of the
four-team group going into their final fixture against Wales on Tuesday
afternoon at the Burhanettin Kocamaz stadium in Tarsus-Mersin. Finland lie
second after beating Wales 3-0 in their second group game on Saturday.

Turkey and Finland kick-off at the same time in nearby Adana, with both
teams knowing they need to win and hope that Romania fail to beat the Welsh
to top the group and qualify for the finals. Should Romania prevail, they
will go forward at the expense of both the Turks and the Finns. Both matches
kick-off at 1pm local time.

Horsfield considers action
Former Blades front-man set to claim damages over Tevez saga
By Richard Bailey Last updated: 30th March 2009
SSN

Former Sheffield United striker Geoff Horsfield has revealed that he will
seek personal compensation from West Ham over the Carlos Tevez saga. The
Blades settled out of court with the Hammers a number of weeks ago but it is
thought that up to 18 current and ex-United players, along with former boss
Neil Warnock, are considering taking action against the Upton Park club. The
35-year-old's comments may come as a surprise to some after the veteran
spent the majority of the season out on loan, first at Leeds and then at
Leicester. Despite this the former Birmingham man, now with Lincoln,
believes he has a right to seek damages after he, like the rest of the
Blades squad at the time, took a pay cut when the side were relegated on the
final day of the 2006/07 season. "There are no personal grudges against West
Ham from any of the Sheffield United players involved, myself included," he
told the Sheffield Star. "But the fact is we lost considerable sums of money
as a result of being relegated to the Championship because our wages dropped
as a consequence. "It's nothing personal or about being bitter, but about
justice."

Upson wants to be first choice
Hammers stopper backing himself to retain jersey
Last updated: 30th March 2009

West Ham defender Matthew Upson believes he can become an England regular
under Fabio Capello. The 29-year-old started Saturday's 4-0 friendly win
over Slovakia alongside John Terry, with Rio Ferdinand struggling with a
back injury. Upson helped keep Slovakia off the scoreboard at Wembley and
believes he is good enough to retain his place in Capello's starting XI. But
Capello remains confident Ferdinand will be fit enough to face Ukraine in a
World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, meaning 13-cap Upson may have to settle
for a place on the bench. "I wouldn't be here if I didn't believe I could
become first choice," said Upson. "There would be no point. It is something
I want to do and I am trying my best to do it. "I am in a position where
every time I get an opportunity I have got to go out there and perform to
the highest level I can. "I understand that the competition for those two
spots at centre-half is very fierce. "You can only take those opportunities
when they are given to you. I went out against Slovakia and tried to do it."

Collins questions tactics
Wales defender believes side should have been more attacking
By Richard Bailey Last updated: 30th March 2009
SSN

Wales defender James Collins has questioned manager John Toshack's tactics
in the 2-0 defeat to Finland at the Millennium Stadium. The Welsh went into
the must-win clash with six points from four games and knew that they would
have to make the most of their home fixtures if they were to claim second
spot behind runaway leaders Germany. With this in mind Toshack decided to
play Craig Bellamy up front on his own, a decision which came back to haunt
the former Real Madrid boss. Wales mustered just two shots on target all
game as Bellamy found himself starved of support and service as striker Ched
Evans kicked his heels on the bench. The manager's tactics have reportedly
not gone down too well with the squad's senior players as the West Ham
centre-back highlights. "It's the manager's preference," he told Western
Mail. "If he wants to play one up front, he'll play one up front and the
boys will do their best to do it. "But in a game we had to win we needed to
create and personally I think two up front maybe would have been better.
"Bellers (Bellamy) has worked his socks off. I played with him for a year at
West Ham and I don't think I've met a striker who works as hard. "We did our
best to knock it around. But you can have all the possession in the world,
football's about scoring goals. "It comes to a point where you've got to
play those high balls in there sometimes. "You've got to have an end
product and we didn't have it. It was a game we had to win but we had one
shot on goal. "It was tough for Craig. He was making fantastic runs, but he
didn't have a chance against their two at the back. "I think I was the only
one who had a header and that's disappointing in a game we needed to win.
"If it's going to take a change of approach I think we've got to look at
it."

Meanwhile Toshack was quick to defend his tactics for the clash after he
declared that they were not the reason they lost the game. "They (Finland)
only played with one striker so it doesn't make a difference," he pointed
out. "It's difficult with this side because we have to strike a balance. We
have midfield players capable of scoring goals and full-backs who can push
on. "We do what we think is in the best interests of everybody."

Upson makes a case for the defence

Matthew Upson says he can force his way into the England first team. The
West Ham defender impressed in the 4-0 friendly win over Slovakia on
Saturday in the absence of Rio Ferdinand and says he wouldn't turn up if he
didn't believe he had a chance of becoming a regular under Fabio Capello.
Manchester United defender Ferdinand has recovered from a back injury and is
likely to partner John Terry at the heart of the England defence in their
World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Wednesday. But Upson, 29, insists he
has the ability to make the centre-back berth his own. He said: "I wouldn't
be here if I didn't believe I could become first choice. "There would be no
point. It is something I want to do and I am trying my best to do it. I am
in a position where every time I get an opportunity I have got to go out
there and perform to the highest level I can. "I understand the competition
for those two spots at centre-half is very fierce. "You can only take those
opportunities when they are given to you. I went out against Slovakia and

Collison set for April return

West Ham star Jack Collison could return to action by the end of April -
just weeks after suffering a dislocated knee cap. The 20-year-old was
carried off in agony during the 1-0 win at Wigan just over three weeks ago,
adding to West Ham's injury woes. But the Wales international, who has
established himself as a first-team regular under Hammers boss Gianfranco
Zola, has made rapid progress while working with the club's medical staff.
And the midfielder could return for the London derby clash with Chelsea on
April 25 with Zola's men hoping to secure a place in next season's UEFA Cup.
The Hammers are currently eighth in the Premier League, but are only behind
seventh-placed Wigan on goal difference. With seventh likely to mean a place
in next season's Europa League, Collison's news will provide Zola's team
with a timely boost as the Premier League reaches its climax.

Cole curses injury setback
by Chris Stanton , 30 March 2009

Carlton Cole has expressed his disappointment after missing out on the
chance to impress for England in the absence of Emile Heskey. After being
introduced as a first-half replacement for the injured Heskey against
Slovakia on Saturday, Cole himself was trudging off soon afterwards. The
West Ham striker suffered a thigh injury which will preclude his involvement
in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine. "With Emile going off it
was a great opportunity to show what I can do," said Cole. "But I tried to
shoot and I felt a sharp strain in my groin. I've never had an injury like
this. "The Slovak defence just caved in at the end and there would have been
a real chance for me to get my first England goal. "I'd felt really good in
the build up to the game. So I'm really disappointed I couldn't carry on
that good work into the match."

Juventus starlet Sebastian Giovinco admits he is eager for first-team

striker is considered one of the best young talents in Italian football and
has been linked with moves to both West Ham and Arsenal. However, despite
his lack of playing time, he remains keen to prove himself at the Stadio
Olimpico di Torino. "I will not spend 15 years on the bench, but I am
stubborn and I want to stay," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "It goes without
saying that I want to play because consistency is important for every
player." He added: "You have to win something to become a champion. I want
to win something big at Juventus. "Right now, I am not interested in money."
Asked if he would like to win the Ballon d'Or one day, he replied: "We'll
see. I can dream."

Sheffield United Players To Pursue Compensation Claim Over Carlos Tevez
Affair
As many as 18 players could be set to claim from West Ham United, who are
reportedly refusing to pay out any more money in compensation...
30 Mar 2009 09:34:24
Goal.com

According to a report in the British tabloid The Sunday Mirror, 18 Sheffield
United players are preparing to claim compensation from Premier League club
West Ham United in relation to the Carlos Tevez affair. The Hammers thought
that the case had drawn to a close after they recently agreed to pay the
Blades a settlement worth around £21 million. However, it seems that has
prompted many others to make claims of their own, with lawyers apparently
asking for as much as £3.5m in damages for the 18 individuals. As the Irons
have so far refused to pay any further compensation, the case could be
referred to a tribunal. If a tribunal is called upon, the news could be
gloomy for West Ham. It is suggested that Lord Griffiths, the judge who
ruled in Sheffield United's favour originally, may chair it.

Carlton Cole Laments International Disruption
West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has reflected on the disappointing
injury that will keep him sidelined for the World Cup qualifier against
Ukraine...
30 Mar 2009 10:13:06
Goal.com

Carlton Cole's return to the England national team was blighted due to his
near instant withdrawal against a sub-standard Slovakia side. Cole replaced
Emile Heskey in the first half, but lasted just 19 minutes on the pitch as
he suffered a groin injury, and he was duly substituted by leggy targetman
Peter Crouch. The West Ham United striker, though, has today reflected on
his disappointment at not being able to train his way back into involvement
for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine. "With Emile going off
it was a great opportunity to show what I can do," Cole is quoted by Setanta
as saying. "But I tried to shoot and I felt a sharp strain in my groin. I've
never had an injury like this. "The Slovak defence just caved in at the end
and there would have been a real chance for me to get my first England
goal," he said. "I'd felt really good in the build up to the game. So I'm
really disappointed I couldn't carry on that good work into the match," he
concluded. England manager Fabio Capello has had to call-up Darren Bent in
the meanwhile as an attacking trident of Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch, and
Carlton Cole all hobbled off the field of play on Saturday.

Horsfield wants Tevez 'justice'
TeamTalk

Ex-Sheffield United star Geoff Horsfield says a compensation claim against
West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair would be driven by "justice". It has
been reported 18 current and ex-Blades players - and former manager Neil
Warnock - are considering seeking damages from West Ham, who recently agreed
an undisclosed out-of-court settlement with Sheffield United. West Ham were
initially fined £5.5million by the Premier League for failing to fully
disclose the terms of the deal that brought Carlos Tevez and fellow
Argentinian Javier Mascherano to England in 2007. Tevez's goals kept the
Hammers in the Premier League at the Blades' expense. Horsfield, now at
Lincoln, told the Sheffield Star: "There are no personal grudges against
West Ham from any of the Sheffield United players involved, myself included.
"But the fact is we lost considerable sums of money as a result of being
relegated to the Championship because our wages dropped as a consequence.
"It's nothing personal or about being bitter, but about justice."

England call for Stanislas
WHUFC.com
Junior Stanislas has joined James Tomkins and Freddie Sears in the England
U20 squad this week
29.03.2009

Junior Stanislas continues to have a memorable March after being drafted
into the England squad for the Under-20 friendly against Italy at Loftus
Road on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old winger, who can play on either flank, will join club-mates
James Tomkins and Freddie Sears in the squad, raising his prospects of
earning a place in the selection that will travel to Egypt for the FIFA U-20
World Cup in late summer. Stanislas has enjoyed a tremendous 2008/09
campaign, first of all consolidating his place as a regular in Alex Dyer's
reserve-team set-up.

Things have accelerated in recent weeks. On 1 and 4 March respectively, he
was an unused substitute for the first-team's 1-0 wins against Manchester
City and Wigan Athletic. He was then taken by Gianfranco Zola on the club's
warm-weather training camp to Spain before a major stride forward with his
senior debut as a subsitute for Savio in the 0-0 draw against West Bromwich
Albion on 16 March.

Stanislas then hit a hat-trick last Friday in a 4-2 reserve-team friendly
success away to Chelsea, with several experienced internationals on view in
both teams. The south Londoner has previously been capped by England at
Under-19 level. He has been with West Ham United since the age of ten and is
the eighth Academy graduate to play for the first team this season.

* England U20s v Italy U20s gets under way at 7pm at Loftus Road on Tuesday.
Admission on the door is £5 for adults and £1 for concessions

Upson shines, Cole out
WHUFC.com
Matthew Upson played the whole game, Robert Green missed out and Carlton
Cole picked up an injury
28.03.2009

Matthew Upson turned in a solid display to win his 14th cap for England on
Saturday but it was a disappointing experience for club-mates Robert Green
and Carlton Cole.

Central defender Upson partnered John Terry in the absence of Rio Ferdinand
as Fabio Capello's team won 4-0 against Slovakia at Wembley. The friendly
match was a warm-up for Wednesday night's FIFA World Cup qualifier against
Ukraine at the same venue - and Upson will feel he has every chance of
retaining his place at the heart of the England rearguard when the Group 6
leaders aim for five wins from five.

Further forward, Cole got a chance off the bench in the 15th minute with a
hamstring injury to seventh-minute goalscorer Emile Heskey. However, the
striker lasted only 20 minutes before making way himself with a muscle
problem suffered in taking a shot on goal moments before. Capello has a
potential striking headache for midweek with Cole's replacement Peter Crouch
also picking up a late knock to his hip.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the England manager confirmed
that Cole would not be fit for the midweek encounter with the injury and
would be returning to the club - a blow for the striker who had been lined
up for his West Ham United return with this Saturday's visit of Sunderland.
Cole has missed the last two club outings through suspension and it remains
to be seen how long he will be on the sidelines.

Green was an unused replacement with Ben Foster getting the nod to replace
usual No1 David James at the half-time interval. Also of note was the 109th
cap won by David Beckham to surpass Bobby Moore's record for an outfield
England player. Half-time substitute Beckham made his mark with the assist
for man of the match Wayne Rooney's 70th-minute goal before Frank Lampard
and then Rooney again wrapped things up.

Collins back in action

The weekend saw the welcome sight of James Collins' playing return although
Wales were beaten
28.03.2009

James Collins got a welcome 90 minutes under his belt this weekend although
was on the losing side as Wales lost 2-0 to Finland a vital FIFA World Cup
qualifier.

Collins was making his first competitive appearance since suffering a
hamstring early in the 2-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on 21 February. He had
not figured since for West Ham United but was deemed fit enough for
selection for this week's internationals, which will conclude for Wales with
Wednesday night's trip visit of Germany.

On Saturday, Jonatan Johansson and Shefki Kuqi scored at the end of each
half respectively to consign Wales to defeat at the Millennium Stadium. The
loss has severely damaged Welsh hopes of reaching next summer's finals in
South Africa. Germany and Russia are the runaway leaders at the top of Group
4 with only the team finishing in first space guaranteed a qualification
place. Finland move into third.

Although he has suffered national-team disappointment, Collins' fitness will
be a big boost for Gianfranco Zola who will have a selection headache to
ponder for next weekend's visit of Sunderland to the Boleyn Ground. James
Tomkins has performed admirably in Collins' absence while Lucas Neill -
himself on World Cup duty with Australia on Wednesday - has also impressed
in a central position.

Specs and Kovac wait

Jonathan Spector and Radoslav Kovac sat it out for their countries as both
nations earned weekend draws
29.03.2009

Jonathan Spector and Radoslav Kovac had a watching brief on World Cup duty
for the United States and Czech Republic respectively this weekend.

The West Ham United duo were both unused substitutes although could yet
figure in meaningful action with another round of qualifiers for the 2010
finals to be played this Wednesday. Lucas Neill will also be on view this
midweek when Australia can take a major step towards South Africa next
summer with a home win against Uzbekistan in the final stage of Asian zone
qualifying.

Spector's US came back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 in El Salvador to
stay on top of their final round qualifying group in the CONCACAF region
ahead of the visit of Trinidad and Tobago to Nashville. Kovac's Czechs drew
0-0 in Slovenia to stay three points off the Group 3 summit in UEFA
qualifying before a major meeting with Slovakia in Prague.

Hall helps down Dons

Still only 15, Robert Hall scored twice in a strong team display by the
Under-18s on Saturday
28.03.2009

Milton Keynes Dons Under-18s 0-3 West Ham United Under-18s

Robert Hall struck twice as a very youthful West Ham United side featuring
six schoolboys eased to an impressive away win at Milton Keynes Dons on
Saturday.

The England Under-16 striker, who is due to represent his country again next
month, underlined his promise with two fine strikes in the second half after
Ahmed Abdulla had opened the scoring soon after the interval. Hall, who does
not turn 16 until October, has impressed whenever he has featured for the
U18s this season. He now has four goals from seven appearances - although
Saturday was only his second start.

In difficult conditions, neither side looked like scoring during the first
half of this FA Academy League inter-group encounter but it was a different
story after the break. Colombian-born midfielder Cristian Montano combined
with Hall to set up captain for the day Abdulla to score with a neat finish.
Then, Hall struck his first midway through the half after good work again
from Montano in tandem with Nick Barrett.

The third goal was all about the young forward as he turned on the ball on
the edge of the penalty area and rifled in an unstoppable shot. The win was
particularly pleasing for Carr as he was without several of his regular U18s
because of Friday's reserve-team friendly at Chelsea - an impressive 4-2
success - and the second string's Barclays Premier Reserve League outing at
Stoke City this coming Monday night.

Season tickets 2009/10
WHUFC.com
Season ticket prices for the 2009/10 season have been announced
27.03.2009

West Ham United are pleased to confirm that season ticket prices for the
2009/10 season have been reduced.

With the club aware of the current uncertain economic climate, fans
purchasing season tickets for next season will now be able to save up to
eight per cent compared to this season's prices. Furthermore, the club can
also confirm that season ticket prices for the 2010/11 season will be
frozen, subject to VAT staying at the same level.

The decrease in prices for next season reflects the recent VAT cut, as well
as a further reduction of up to six per cent added by the club. This means
adult supporters can save up to £75 on their season tickets for next season.
Under-16s will also continue to receive generous discounts, with under-10s
able to purchase a season ticket for just £100.

Purchasing a season ticket offers excellent value, representing a saving of
20 per cent of the cost of 19 match tickets as against 15 per cent in the
current season. The saving equates to the cost of four to five non-category
A match tickets.

Season ticket holders will be further rewarded with promotions and deals
throughout the season, including special offers for non-category A televised
Premier League matches and, wherever possible, discounted ticket prices for
cup games at the Boleyn Ground.

As an additional incentive to reward long-term loyalty, any season ticket
holder who renews for the fifth consecutive season (including this renewal
season) will receive a 20 per cent discount on the cost of their season
ticket for season 2012/13. At current season ticket prices this would save
an adult a minimum of £100.

West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "The current economic climate is a
challenge for us all. It's so important we acknowledge this and adjust our
prices accordingly. Our fans are central to this club and everything we do.
Their support has been, and continues to be, invaluable.

"As I have repeatedly said, nothing will divert us from achieving success
and our fans are an integral part of the 'football project'. We have a sound
business plan and the prospects for development have never been clearer.
Coupled with our performance on the pitch and the excellent work being done
by Gianfranco Zola and his team, we are very much looking forward to an
exciting and rewarding next season for all concerned with West Ham United."

For full details of season ticket prices click here. Season ticket renewals
will commence on Monday 6 April with season ticket holders receiving renewal
documentation around that time.

Stanislas hits a hat-trick
WHUFC.com
Junior Stanislas kept his great run going with three goals in a reserve-team
friendly away to Chelsea
27.03.2009

Junior Stanislas scored a hat-trick to underline his burgeoning potential in
a 4-2 behind-closed doors reserves friendly win against Chelsea on Friday.

The England Under-19 winger had played against the Chelsea first team in two
FA Cup matches during a loan spell at Southend United back in January and
had another game to remember against the Blues, this time at their Cobham
training centre. He was watched by manager Gianfranco Zola and assistant
Steve Clarke, with the match giving welcome fitness to those players not
away on international duty.

Stanislas helped the visiting Hammers fight their way back into the contest
in the second half after Franco Di Santo had put Chelsea in front just
before half-time. As the away side took hold after the interval, there was
plenty of promising play from the 19-year-old Stanislas, who was already on
a high having made his first-team debut in the 0-0 draw with West Bromwich
Albion on 16 March.

He struck twice more - after his outstanding solo effort to equalise - with
winger Anthony Edgar, another graduate from Tony Carr's Under-18 set-up,
adding the other to give Alex Dyer's side a welcome win. The hosts' Ricardo
Quaresma, who was joined by fellow Chelsea first-teamers Hilario, Alex and
Florent Malouda, rounded out the scoring. The West Ham side included Kieron
Dyer, who got an extended run-out.

Meanwhile, Freddie Sears and James Tomkins will join up with the England
Under-20 squad this weekend ahead of the friendly international against
Italy to be played at Loftus Road on Tuesday. Mark Noble, meanwhile, was
left out of the England Under-21 party that played a Euro 2009 warm-up in
Norway on Friday but could feature in the visit of France in another U21
friendly to be played in Nottingham on Tuesday.

Carlton Cole is a major doubt for next weekend's Premier League clash
against Sunderland after limping out of England's friendly with Slovakia
this afternoon. Cole - on himself as a 14th minute replacement for the
injured Emile Heskey - lasted just over 20 minutes before pulling up with
what appeared to be a groin strain. He was replaced moments later by
Portsmouth's Peter Crouch. The news is a huge blow to Gianfranco Zola who
has seen his United side struggle to score goals in Cole's recent absence;
the Sunderland game would have marked his return to action after a two-match
suspension.

* Matthew Upson started the game for England alongside Chelsea's John Terry
in the centre of defence. The other Hammer in the squad, Rob Green, starts
on the bench.

Season ticket reductions announced

West Ham United have announced season ticket reductions of up to 8% for the
2009/10 campaign.

In a statement released on whufc.com this morning the club also confirmed
that "season ticket prices for the 2010/11 season will be frozen, subject to
VAT staying at the same level."

Prices have been slashed by up to 6% with the extra 2% as a result of the
Government's recent VAT reduction, meaning that adult fans can save up to
£75 per year.

Meanwhile the club have also announced that supporters who have held a
season ticket for the last five years will receive an additional 20%
discount on their 2012/13 season ticket price.

CEO Scott Duxbury said: "The current economic climate is a challenge for us
all. It's important we acknowledge this and adjust our prices accordingly.
Our fans are central to this club and everything we do. Their support has
been, and continues to be, invaluable.

"We have a sound business plan and the prospects for development have never
been clearer. Coupled with our performance on the pitch and the excellent
work being done by Gianfranco Zola and his team, we are very much looking
forward to an exciting and rewarding next season for all concerned with West
Ham United."

The welcome news comes at a time when the club are struggling to fill the
Boleyn Ground, with no more than a handful of games being sold out this
season.

Behrami welcomes fan support
Hammers ace starts long road to recovery
By Chris Burton Last updated: 27th March 2009
SSN

Valon Behrami is determined to win his fitness battle and return to the West
Ham fold a better player. The Swiss international suffered anterior cruciate
ligament damage against Manchester City last month and was forced to undergo
surgery in an effort to rectify the problem. Having being forced to accept
that his 2008/09 campaign is over, the former Lazio man is now setting his
sights on being ready for action next term. He has a lot of hard work ahead
of him as he begins the slog of rehabilitation, but insists the support he
has received from the Hammers faithful has given him the motivation to
bounce back. "I know with this support I can do my rehab work even better,"
Behrami told the club's official website. "It is always a pleasure to see
and hear the West Ham fans, they have been fantastic to me since I arrived
and I want them to know I want to come back stronger and give my all for the
team when I can. "I have been lucky because I have not been out with an
injury like this before. "This season I have played nearly all the games and
you look to keep going like that and hope that if you have an injury, it
doesn't keep you out for long. But now I am getting my head around a
different routine and starting my rehab work."
Behrami only joined West Ham last summer but admits that he already feels
settled at Upton Park. "I feel this is my home now," he said. "When I
arrived here, most of the team were away because they were on a pre-season
tour, but when they returned, I settled in with them all very quickly and it
has gone from there really. "I like the mentality here, the club and the
people. I have taken on all the advice about how much time it will take for
me to get back. "I won't rush anything as I want to come back stronger and
give much more to the team again."

Hammers linked with Floccari
Striker will be allowed to leave Atalanta in summer
By James Dall Last updated: 27th March 2009

Atalanta have confirmed striker Sergio Floccari could be sold in the summer,
with West Ham United credited with an interest in the player. Floccari has
impressed since signing for Atalanta from Messina in 2007 and has netted 12
goals in 27 games in Serie A this season. A report in Friday's press
suggests the Hammers are keen on the Italian, while Newcastle, Juventus,
Roma, Villarreal, Wolfsburg and Zenit St Petersburg are all also mentioned.
Atalanta sporting director Carlo Osti said in the Daily Mirror: "Sergio has
now reached his full potential as a footballer in this league. "We have an
agreement with the player and his agent that he will be sold at the end of
the season if someone is interested." West Ham have yet to confirm or deny
the rumours suggesting they are keen on 27-year-old Floccari.

Exclusive: Cole 'not sure' over Ukraine fitness
by Tom Adams , 28 March 2009
setanta.co.uk

Carlton Cole has admitted to setanta.com he is a big doubt for Wednesday's
World Cup qualifier with Ukraine after he damaged his groin. Cole came on as
an early substitute for Emile Heskey during Saturday's 4-0 win over
Slovakia, but soon the West Ham man followed his team-mate down the tunnel
after damaging a groin.
Peter Crouch also went off later in the game with a hip injury as Fabio
Capello counted the cost of three injured strikers from a comfortable 4-0
friendly triumph over Slovakia. Crouch is expected to be fit for Wednesday's
World Cup qualifier, but Cole is far from sure over his own involvement.
"I'm going for a scan and hopefully I can get the result straight away,"
Cole told setanta.com in an exclusive interview after the match. "I'm not
sure for Wednesday, hopefully they can analyse it. "It's disappointing
because their defence caved in at the end and me and Crouchy were
disappointed we couldn't be involved."

Sanchez considering legal action in Tevez affair
Sport.co.uk

Lawrie Sanchez has announced he is considering suing West Ham over the
Carlos Tevez affair. Sanchez was Fulham manager at the end of the 2006-07
season when West Ham avoided relegation and finished 15th, one place above
Fulham. But West Ham have recently agreed to pay Sheffield United, who were
relegated that season, around £20m after effectively admitting Argentine
striker Tevez was not eligible to pay for them. It has been reported that
Fulham are taking legal action against the east London club. saying they
missed out on £700,000 by finishing a place below them. And Sanchez, who was
sacked by Fulham in December 2007, feels he would be entitled to some of the
cash and has blamed the FA for allowing the controversy to get out of hand.
"I'm going to look at my contract and see if it did injustice me in some
way, shape or form," said the former Northern Ireland manager, who is
currently out of work. "If everyone else is sticking their nose in the
trough then perhaps I need to have a look at it. As manager of the team, I
must have lost out financially in some way. "If West Ham feel they got away
with something and that paying £20m to Sheffield United is a way out of it,
then I have no problem with anyone else who feels they were unjustly treated
taking legal action."
Sanchez, speaking to the Football Pools Podcast, added: "The FA should have
dealt with the situation better in the first place. "One good thing all this
will do is make the FA stronger in their administration of the game. All of
this is about the FA not being strong enough."

Hammers glad 'maniac' Bellamy left - Kovac

The West Ham players are relieved that 'maniac' Craig Bellamy left the club,
according to Radoslav Kovac. The Hammers midfielder joined after Bellamy
moved to Manchester City for £14million in January and the Czech ace says he
is glad to see the back of him.Kovac, 29, said: "They are glad he is not in
the team - they say he is a maniac. "He shouted at everyone who did not pass
to him in training, it was crazy. His departure has been a positive thing
for the players." Meanwhile, Bellamy questioned how his country would move
on after Wales were soundly beaten 2-0 by an aging Finland team on Saturday.
The woeful World Cup qualifying result leaves the Welsh fourth in Group Four
- and they face leaders Germany on Wednesday. Bellamy said: "God knows where
we go from here."

Tevez 18
Sheffield Star
Published Date: 30 March 2009
By James Shield

Eighteen past and present Sheffield United players are now said to be
seeking compensation from West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair. They could
now put their case before an independent tribunal as the Hammers have
steadfastly refused to enter into negotiations stating that the £25-million-
plus settlement figure with the Blades was a final payment. United players
who felt they had been financially blighted by their relegation from the
Premier League in 2007 - a drop influenced by Tevez's illegal third-party
contribution to the Hammers' cause - are reportedly seeking around £3.5m in
damages. A fresh tribunal may be called in to arbitrate. Ex-Sheffield United
striker Geoff Horsfield was the first player to publicly admit that he is
considering legal action. Horsfield made only a handful of appearances for
the Blades after completing a £1.2m move from West Bromwich Albion in May
2006. West Ham, found guilty of breaching rules governing third party
ownership when they signed the Argentine and compatriot Javier Mascherano,
insist they will not entertain private claims from individuals detailing
loss of earnings - including then United manager Neil Warnock. The Hammers
are warning of the dangers of "legal anarchy" because of the modern claims
culture. But Horsfield, now with Lincoln City, says: "There are no personal
grudges against West Ham from any of the Sheffield United players involved,
myself included. "But the fact is we lost considerable sums of money as a
result of being relegated to the Championship because our wages dropped as a
consequence." "It is nothing personal or about being bitter, but about
justice."

David Cotterill and Jamie Ward did not get on the field for Wales and
Northern Ireland in the weekend internationals. Gary Naysmith played in
Scotland's 3-0 defeat to Holland.

West Ham striker's injury a blow for club and country
10:56pm Sunday 29th March 2009
Echo

WEST HAM striker Carlton Cole has been ruled out of England's World Cup
qualifier with Ukraine after injuring his groin during Saturday's 4-0
victory over Slovakia.
In a cruel twist, Cole hobbled off just minutes after coming on as a
substitute for the injured Emile Heskey. The Hammers' frontman was brought
on after 15 minutes with a fantastic chance to prove his international
credentials in his second cap for his country. However, he injured a muscle
in his leg in the process of attempting a shot on goal, and he was
substituted in the 20th minute for Peter Crouch. While the blow leaves
England boss Fabio Capello with limited options up front for the match
against Ukraine – Crouch was also left struggling with a hip problem at the
end of the weekend's game – it will provide a more severe dilemma for
Gianfranco Zola. Things were beginning to look up for the Irons' manager
with the return to fitness of Kieron Dyer, Matthew Upson and James Collins
in recent days, but Cole's absence, coupled with the injuries to Jack
Collison and Valon Behrami, will leave him with a selection headache in
attack for the visit of Sunderland on Saturday.

West Ham management excited about academy talent

West Ham United academy boss Tony Carr is excited about the talent coming
through their system. He told whufc.com: "You can't predict these things.
There may be a player that is quite ready but there may be an England
international blocking his path so he may have to go along the route of
getting his experience on loan at various clubs. "You can never predict
these things, all you do say is we feel as a whole in the Academy we've got
players with great potential and it's up to us to make them realise that
potential. I think we've had three through this year and three last year,
which is a fantastic two years for the production line of the Academy. We
mustn't be too greedy but we do feel that there are players in the Academy
for the foreseeable future."

West Ham United academy boss Tony Carr is delighted with the progress this
season of defender Bondz N'Gala. N'Gala had a loan spell at MK Dons earlier
this season and Carr told whufc.com: "Bondz plays centre-back and is a very
aggressive type of player, very strong. He has a good pace about his game
for a big lad and is quite dominant in the air as you'd expect from a
six-foot-plus boy. "He's made good strides and he needs to keep moving

Neill-led defence intent on keeping clean sheet
30.03.09 | Andrew Slevison

Australian captain Lucas Neill says he is only worried about keeping a clean
sheet on Wednesday when the Socceroos take on Uzbekistan. Neill knows how
important it is to keep the visitors goalless in the World Cup qualifier no
matter who plays alongside him in the back half. "From my point of view,
everyone's harping on about good performances, more goals, but all I really
care about is keeping the scoreline at zero," Neill said. "As a defender,
you have that mindset. 'Schwarzy' [goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer] and I, Craig
[Moore] and the rest of the boys, we're really proud of the fact there's
been four clean sheets in a row, and we want to make it one more. "'Moorey'
is obviously a big loss for this game, but now someone else gets the chance.
"I don't know who it's going to be. There are some good options. Chris
(Coyne) I've worked with before, he's an English style of centre half, so
that makes it easy for me. "'Meggsy' [Beauchamp], I've played with him many
times, no problem there. And 'Jado' [North] came from nowhere and put a
blitzing performance in China. Whoever it is, doesn't matter, as long as
they realise how important it is we get that zero.
"Pim has had a word to us, and made it clear it's time to switch on and
focus. It's been a nice and relaxing in camp, as always, but there's so many
things which could go wrong. He wants to make sure we get it right so we
don't have to rely on the last three games. "Everyone's just talking about
winning, about winning easy. "Obviously, we know it's not going to be like
that. Let's qualify first, then worry about how good we are, and how good it
was to get there. A few of us senior pros, we've made it clear to the boys
that it's not about getting distracted by the environment, or worrying about
entertaining. All Pim cares about is a one-nil [win], even if it's in the
95th minute."

proud. "That was an unbelievable moment, but to get to 109 is great and to
do it at Wembley means so much." Asked to do a commemorative picture with an
England shirt bearing 109 on the back he refused. He revealed: "I was asked
to do the picture but I did that for 100. "And though it's a big thing for
me I don't want to focus too much on that because the performance of the
team is more important. "Of course I'm proud for myself and for my family

Carr on young trio
WHUFC.com
Over the next three days Tony Carr shares his thoughts on his three latest Academy graduates
26.03.2009

When Josh Payne came on as a 90th minute substitute at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, he became the eighth West Ham United Academy graduate to make a first-team appearance this season.

Payne's debut followed hot on the heels of Junior Stanislas', who had made his bow for the Hammers in the previous match against West Bromwich Albion. Fellow teenager Bondz N'Gala provided the defensive cover on the bench at Ewood Park and will no doubt be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the pair by tasting first-team football for the first time in the near future.

It has been another fruitful season for the famed Academy's production line of talent and over the next three days Academy director Tony Carr, who has overseen the trio's development since they joined West Ham, shares his thoughts on the latest youngsters to have made the breakthrough to Gianfranco Zola's first-team plans

First up is 19-year-old England Under-19 international Junior Stanislas.

Junior Stanislas

"Junior came to us when he was about ten-years-old. He's a south London lad and used to come through the Blackwell Tunnel on a daily basis. He's worked hard and come up through the ranks and has got his opportunity this year," Carr explains.

"He had a spell at Southend earlier this season and equipped himself very well there. He's come back now and is training well with the first-team squad and with the situation where Gianfranco has a few injuries and suspensions, these young players are getting their opportunity.

"Junior can play wide left or right and he can also play in the hole, but I'm sure he'll play in the right or left-hand side. He's a good crosser of the ball, has got good close control skills, has an eye for a pass and it has been known for him to bend in a free-kick or two. Technically, he's a good player and now needs to get used to pace and demands of the Premier League - which is a tough call - but the more experienced these players become the better they get.

"Like all these things it is a very slow process. You don't come in one day and all of a sudden there's a shining light there. It becomes a gradual process of playing and training, trying to take things on board and trying to stretch the players in terms of the teams they play in. If they are a 14-year-old you want to see whether they can play with the Under-15s and so on.

"The boys come to me at 16 or 18 on a full-time basis and it's a matter of getting youth team games under their belt,s getting into the reserves, catching people's eyes and taking the opportunity when it comes and that's what these young lads are doing now. It's not fail proof system; it's certainly one that is down to them and their ability."

Spector glad to be back
WHUFC.com
Defender Jonathan Spector is eager to make up for lost time with the United States national team
26.03.2009

Jonathan Spector is eager to make up for lost time and make his mark for the United States national team.

The versatile West Ham United defender, who turned 23 on 1 March, suffered a double injury heartbreak that ruled him out of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and last year's Olympic Games in Beijing.

Having returned after six months out with a torn labrum - the cartilage that surrounds the socket of the hip joint - Spector is back in the United States squad for Saturday's 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against El Salvador in Miami, and next Wednesday's visit of Trinidad and Tobago to Nashville.

Having missed the two biggest international tournaments of his career so far - Spector was ruled out of the last World Cup finals with a shoulder problem - the player is delighted to be back in Bob Bradley's squad.

"It's definitely great to be back with the team. Last time I was in I had a hip problem and the US team physician diagnosed it. I couldn't be happier to be back playing, first of all, and then obviously being back with the national team. It's always an honour to be called upon to represent my country so I'm thrilled to be back and part of the team."

Spector, who hails from the northern Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, hopes to add to the 12 caps he has earned on Saturday, when the Americans will hope to build on the 2-0 victory they scored over Mexico in their opening match of the fourth round of CONCACAF qualifying against surprise package El Salvador.

The player, who has made six first-team appearances for West Ham since his return from injury in December, is also targeting a place in Bradley's squad for both next summer's World Cup finals and the FIFA Confederations Cup, which is also being held in South Africa in June.

"I feel like I'm at 100 per cent. I know I've been out for an extended period but I've been working hard to get back to where I am now. I've played nearly two full games for West Ham and have come on in a number of other games and, as far as playing day-in, day-out is concerned, I'm feeling pretty comfortable. Obviously there's always room for improvement, but I'm happy with where I'm at.

"First and foremost team success and pushing for qualification for the World Cup in South Africa. We've also got the Confederations Cup coming up this summer so I'd love to be involved in that. I've been a bit unlucky in terms of injuries coming at the wrong times. Hopefully I can be a bit luckier this time around and work my way into getting a number of appearances for the US team."

Behrami feeling bright
WHUFC.com
Valon Behrami is looking to the future as he looks forward to working his way back to fitness
26.03.2009

Valon Behrami has pledged to continue working hard throughout the summer months, long after this season has ended, as he begins to plan his return to first-team action.
The 23-year-old midfielder is sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which he suffered in the 1-0 win over Manchester City last month. After undergoing successful keyhole surgery, Behrami is now looking forward to starting light rehabilitation work in the next weeks with medical staff at Chadwell Heath.

As well as looking forward with optimism, Behrami was keen to take time out to thank the West Ham United fans for the support they have given him since he has been on the sidelines and to explain how touched he was by the response of the Boleyn Ground crowd when he was stretchered off the pitch. "I was told afterwards that our fans were clapping for me when I was carried off," Behrami said. "At that time, I wasn't aware of this because of the injury! I wish they were clapping for me for a different reason! But hearing that just makes me know even more how special this club is and the people around it. "I know with this support I can do my rehab work even better. It is always a pleasure to see and hear the West Ham fans, they have been fantastic to me since I arrived and I want them to know I want to come back stronger and give my all for the team when I can."

While no longer being able to play his part on the pitch this season, Behrami will be adding his support from the stands with the fans as the team continue to work towards a possible UEFA Europa League place for next season. "I will be watching as many games as this injury will allow me to. It will be frustrating to have to watch and not be able to play, but I will be doing my best to support the team in every match. The team is doing well and there is no reason why we can't keep getting the results and finish the season in a good place. "I hope that they [the fans] will continue to support the team as they play the rest of the games, this is very important for all of us, to have their backing. Here at West Ham, it is not about the individual, it's about the team."

Behrami explained that being out with such an injury has taken a bit of time to adapt to. He said: "I have been lucky because I have not been out with an injury like this before. This season I have played nearly all the games and you look to keep going like that and hope that if you have an injury, it doesn't keep you out for long. But now I am getting my head around a different routine and starting my rehab work."

The Swiss international believes he is in the best hands possible, led by West Ham's head of rehabilitation, Giorgio Gasparini. Under his guidance, Behrami will be doing work to strengthen his knee following the operation. "I am very happy that I have the best people around me to help me," he said. "I have people like Giorgio, who is one of the very best in his field, and we also have other good staff and it's important for me to have this. "At the start I will be doing things to get the circulation going again around the knee and building up the reflexes and movement. There are difficult weeks ahead but as I said, I have the right people around me and I am very happy about that."

Off the field, Behrami has a welcome distraction as he recently became a father for the first time, with the birth of his baby daughter a month ago. "My partner and baby are at home with me here in England and yes, I can go home and perhaps forget the injury a little as she will keep us busy," he joked. Having been here eight months since his arrival from Lazio in July last year, Behrami says he now feels completely at home at the club, which gives him further reason to work hard and get back in action.
"I feel this is my home now. When I arrived here, most of the team were away because they were on a pre-season tour, but when they returned, I settled in with them all very quickly and it has gone from there really. "I like the mentality here, the club and the people. I have taken on all the advice about how much time it will take for me to get back. I won't rush anything as I want to come back stronger and give much more to the team again."

The 16-year-old, who has impressed as a member of Tony Carr's Academy this season, was named in the Turkey side for the Group Six match in Adana.

Swindon Town's Billy Bodin gave Wales a 31st-minute lead before Trabzonspor's Hassan Ahmet Sari drew Turkey level three minutes later. Leicester City midfielder Elliott Chamberlain put the Welsh back in front on 47 minutes before Chelsea starlet Gokhan Tore completed the scoring in the 51st-minute.

Turkey will complete their Elite round fixtures with further games against Romania on Saturday and Finland next Monday. Romania beat Finland 2-1 in Thursday's other fixture.

Should Turkey top their group, Ercan Abdullah's team will qualify for this summer's finals, which will be held in Germany in May.

Matthew Upson is looking forward to earning his 14th international cap when England face Slovakia at Wembley this weekend. The Hammers centre half missed the 1-1 draw with Blackburn at Ewood Park last weekend having sustained an injury against West Bromwich Albion the week before. However he is now fully recovered from the calf strain that forced him out of that game and raring to go against the Slovaks this weekend - and then Ukraine, who visit Wembley four days later for a World Cup qualifier. "A lot of people say that we haven't performed as well at the new Wembley," he said. "We need to put that right, have some really good team performances and results. "It's such a fantastic arena to play at and I'm sure the team will be giving it everything they've got."
Meanwhile Carlton Cole is hoping to earn his second cap this weekend to complement his debut against Spain last month, which he was inches away from marking with a goal. I've got high ambitions and new levels of expectation around me now" he told WHUTV. I just want to fulfil my potential and get to the highest my game [can get].
"There's a few things that I need to work on and hopefully I'll be a more complete player when I next get the chance."
Finally Rob Green is hoping to follow up his 45 minutes in Spain with another appearance this weekend - despite bookies making Manchester United reserve keeper Ben Foster favourite to start. "I have no idea whether I will get a chance this time," he admitted, "but it was great to get a half against Spain last time. I just need to carrying on doing my stuff here and keep working hard and hopefully [get a chance]."

Dean Ashton has revealed that his return to first team action is still some way off. The 25-year-old striker has been out of action since last September with with an ankle injury but has recently started jogging once again. However he admits he is unlikely to play again this season; talking to whufc.com he said: "It's light at the end of the tunnel for me. To get to this stage again now is a real step up for me and I will continue to work hard to take it further. There is no easy way back from an injury that keeps you out for a long while, but as long as I am working my hardest and keep taking steps forward then I know it is all heading the right way. "I want to come back when everything is right, not return prematurely and end up getting another injury, because all the hard work will be for nothing. If it means continuing to be patient and let things take as long as they need to, then that's what I will do. Ashton - who has made just 33 Premier League starts for the Hammers since moving to East London in January 2006 - was a £7.25million capture from Norwich City. He scored six goals during the latter half of his first season at the club including West Ham's first against Liverpool in the FA Cup Final. What would have been his first full season as a Hammer - 2006/07 - was wiped out completely after he broke an ankle in an England training session - an injury which he has never fully recovered from.

Dean Ashton: West Ham United career highlights

January 2006: Joins club in £7.25million switch from Championship outfit Norwich City.

May 2006: Scores West Ham's first in the 3-3 FA Cup Final draw.

August 2006: First international call-up under Steve McClaren.

August 2006: Breaks ankle in England training session, misses entire 2006/07 season as a result.

August 2007: Makes first league appearance in 15 months (0-2 home defeat to Man City).

September 2007: Ashton warns that it could be months before he is fully fit again

October 2007: Receives first England call-up since ankle break before being ruled out for six weeks (knee ligaments).

November 2007: Makes comeback in 1-1 draw with Tottenham. Ends season will 11 goals to his name.

June 2008: FInally makes his England debut against Trinidad & Tobago (22 months after first call-up).

September 2008: Breaks down in training having played in opening games of 08/09 season. Initial prognosis indicates a three-week layoff.

Kovac impressed by Parker

Radoslav Kovac has praised fellow Hammer and midfield partner Scott Parker. The 29-year-old Czech midfielder joined the Hammers on loan from Spartak in January for the rest of the season with view to a permanent deal. Despite struggling to adapt to the pace of the Premier League in his opening appearances Kovac had a fine game against Blackburn at the weekend and is beginning to form a good partnership with the England midfielder - for whom he had complementary words when speaking to deniksport.cz earlier this week. "Playing defensively with Scott Parker, operating side by side we're perfectly complementary," said Kovac. "While he provides more offensive support, I defend more. "I am glad that I play just with him; he is a good kid and football player."
Kovac - who revealed that he has been taking English lessons up to three times a week - also had kind words for striker Carlton Cole, who he feels is an integral part of the United side. "It helps us in that we have Carlton," he said. "He is excellent and holds up a lot of ball which helps the team. He has missed [the last] two matches but we're look forward to having him again. With him we are stronger."
Whilst on his prospects of remaining in England past the end of this season, he added: "When I was talking with the CEO he said he would like to exercise the [permanent] option. But the clause is not the cheapest, so perhaps something can be done in the summer."

Jonathan Spector has admitted that his recently-injured right hip will never fully heal. The American defender missed the opening half of the 2008/09 season with a torn labrum and had to wait until the 2-1 win over Stoke on 28th December to make his first appearance. But despite having played a part in United's last five games - with no further reaction - Spector has revealed that his hip will never be 100% again as a result of the injury. "The surgeon actually expected that I'd have pain my entire first season back," he said in an interview with Soccernet. "But I haven't really had any pain or discomfort - even after the surgery. "I'm totally surprised how well it healed and how much stronger everything around my hip is. I continue to do the exercises I was given by the trainers and physiotherapists and just stay on top of it. "Coming back from injury is always difficult, especially being out for an extended period of time," he added. "On top of that there's the new manager and new players. "I knew coming in it would be a tough season this year, but at the same time, the manager stressed he wants me to be at the club. I had some loan options turned down because he wanted me to stay."
One of those loan options was Sunderland, as revealed on KUMB.com back in January whilst German outfit FC Koln are also thought to have expressed an interest in taking the former Man Utd utility man. Meanwhile Valon Behrami has told whufc.com that he is delighted at the progress he has made since tearing knee ligaments last month.

Hammers linked with Floccari
Striker will be allowed to leave Atalanta in summer
By James Dall Last updated: 27th March 2009

Atalanta have confirmed striker Sergio Floccari could be sold in the summer, with West Ham United credited with an interest in the player. Floccari has impressed since signing for Atalanta from Messina in 2007 and has netted 12 goals in 27 games in Serie A this season. A report in Friday's press suggests the Hammers are keen on the Italian, while Newcastle, Juventus, Roma, Villarreal, Wolfsburg and Zenit St Petersburg are all also mentioned. Atalanta sporting director Carlo Osti said in the Daily Mirror: "Sergio has now reached his full potential as a footballer in this league. "We have an agreement with the player and his agent that he will be sold at the end of the season if someone is interested." West Ham have yet to confirm or deny the rumours suggesting they are keen on 27-year-old Floccari.

West Ham United Eyeing Atalanta's Sergio Floccari – Report
The Hammers are prepared to break their transfer record to take the Italian to Upton Park...
27 Mar 2009 09:30:38
Goal.com

According to a report in the British tabloid The Daily Mirror, Premier League club West Ham United are set to make an offer for Atalanta's Sergio Floccari this summer.
The 27-year-old striker has been linked with a host of clubs recently, including Serie A giants Juventus and Roma, Spanish side Villarreal, German team Wolfsburg and Russian outfit Zenit St. Petersburg. It is therefore thought that la Dea, who reportedly rejected an €8.5 million (£8m) bid for him last season, are ready to ask for as much as €15m (£14m) in exchange for his services. Apparently, the Hammers are ready to smash their current record transfer fee - the €9.5m (£9m) paid for Savio Nsereko in January - to land the 5ft 10 in forward. It appears that the Orobici are prepared to sell their star front-man, with sporting director Carlo Osti quoted as saying, "Sergio has now reached his full potential as a footballer in this league. "We have an agreement with the player and his agent that he will be sold at the end of the season if someone is interested." Floccari has been in good form in front of goal this season, finding the back of the net 12 times in 27 appearances.

West Ham target club record move for Atalanta striker Floccari
The Mirror
Exclusive by Neil McLeman 27/03/2009

West Ham are ready to break their transfer record for the second time this year after starting negotiations for Italian striker Sergio Floccari. The Upton Park club agreed a £9million deal for Brescia playmaker Savio during the January transfer window. And now Italian technical director Gianluca Nani has identified Floccari, 27, as the man to lead the Hammers attack next season. The Atalanta striker has scored 12 goals in 27 games in Serie A this season and is on the fringes of the Italian national squad.
His form has also attracted the interest of Newcastle as well as Juventus, Roma, Villarreal, Wolfsburg and Zenit St Petersburg. Atalanta, who turned down an £8m bid for him last season, are hoping to start an auction to sell their star player for £14m. But the Hammers are hoping to strike a deal early for a lower price - as they did in January with Serie B side Brescia for Savio. Gianfranco Zola's side need to strengthen their attack with continuing uncertainty over the long-term fitness of Dean Ashton and David Di Michele and Diego Tristan only at the club on season-long loans. Atalanta sporting director Carlo Osti said: "Sergio has now reached his full potential as a footballer in this league. "We have an agreement with the player and his agent that he will be sold at the end of the season if someone is interested."

West Ham plan CLEVER £3m MIDFIELD MAESTRO bid!
by Mr Comfort on March 26th, 2009

Zola plans an audacious move for this Fulham midfielder. West Ham United Football Club are reportedly keen on Danny Murphy. The former Liverpool midfielder is playing the best football of his career this season, as he inspires Fulham to a possible place in next season's Europa League. However, despite recently triggering a one-year extension to his contract at Craven Cottage, reports suggest Gianfranco Zola hopes to lure him to Upton Park. It is believed the Hammers boss is prepared to offer Murphy a three-year deal to join United which, at the age of 32, is sure to be tempting for the player. (fansfc.com)
Danny Murphy has proved this term that he is still has a lot to offer and if Gianfranco Zola can persuade the former Liverpool man to move to east London then it would be a very clever move. Murphy's performances have earned rave reviews and along with the tight defence at Craven Cottage Danny has been intrumental in leading Roy Hodgson's side into the top half of the table. Do Hammers fans think such a move would be a good one?

West Ham United - The Game's Gone Crazy
Thursday, 26 March 2009
The new Frank Lampard?

Is Collison the real deal, our new Frank Lampard? The thing that strikes me most is the boy's confidence. He WANTS the ball and wants it in key areas. Against Boro at home in the cup he missed a sitter, blasting over when he should have squared to Di Michele or Tristan, but he was there, at the far stick, further forward than any other player, and he had the balls to let fly. Yes the decision to shoot was wrong, but in our side, a player confident enough to shoot is a precious commodity.

Look at him against City. Never mind the finish, and that goal was beautifully taken, look at the run that took him into the box in the first place. Savio is quick but not quick enough to leave Collison in his wake. As Nsureko broke forward, there was Collison bursting through the middle, actually pointing at the space he wanted the ball played into. Savio chose to shoot instead and who was on hand to sniff in the box as Given parried? Not Cole or Di Michele, the guys paid to do that job, but Collison. That sort of awareness, that sort of hunger to get into goal scoring positions, is rare.

Who does it in the modern game? Lampard, Gerrard, Ronaldo, Giggs, Cahill, Ireland, special players because they read the game and somehow take up positions that others don't see. It is as if the ball is drawn to them, they gamble and time and again, unlike Ethers, they back a winner. Now I accept that it might be going too far to say Collison has that knack based on three goals but that is a good return for a 19 year old playing in a goal shy team that doesn't create bucket fulls of chances. Crucially, the kid has key defensive duties in the formation that Zola picks. Look at Behrami. He is all energy, loads of endeavour, but how often does he actually make it into the opposition box? He is being lauded as a West Ham great but that is more down to sweat and graft than down to any end product from what I have seen. Think again of the City game. Who forced Given into his only meaningful save in the first half? You've got it, Collison, breaking into the left hand corner of the box and driving low towards the bottom corner. The movement and confidence were Lampard like.

So is he that good? Only time will tell of course but confidence, an ability to read the game and quick feet are key ingredients for a quality player. The boy can control a ball, the boy can pick a pass (look at that through ball to Cole against Wigan), the boy can knock in a cross, the boy can dribble, the boy can score, the boy can play down the right, the left or down the middle, the boy can tackle...there's only one mystery. With all that ability, why on earth did he opt to play for Wales when he was qualified for England? Will he become the new Giggs? What a shame he never got to grace the final stages of a World Cup because he opted to play for Wales!

West Ham: Ton-derful goal helps boost a Noble cause
8:00am Thursday 26th March 2009
Guardian Series

MARK NOBLE is confident that his impressive performance in his 100th game for West Ham against Blackburn on Saturday will trigger his release from a recent slump in form. The 21-year-old midfielder has struggled to hit the heights he managed to reach during a fabulous purple patch in the first half of the season, after being asked to play in a number of different positions, following injuries to key members of the squad. But after bringing up his ton in spectacular fashion with a sumptuous strike against Rovers, he is adamant that he can once again become the driving force of the Hammers midfield. "I mean, wow! Someone told me earlier that I was the longest serving player here and I'm only 21, so to get on the scoresheet on your 100th game is a nice milestone," said Noble. "I had a little dip in form, I don't know what the reason was, but it happens to everyone. But hopefully I am beginning to pick it up again and I will be able to go strong for the rest of the season. "I wasn't worried because I've got a lot of belief in my ability. Obviously I was playing out of position sometimes and to be fair I just stuck with it, kept working hard for the team and the hard work really paid off."
The youngster has been shifted out wide and pushed back to anchor the midfield by manager Gianfranco Zola in recent weeks, and that has too often seen him fade into the background during matches. However, he was very much at the forefront of everything good about West Ham's attacking forays last week, assuming the role of quarterback as he threaded balls between Blackburn's backline with ease. Noble insists Zola's unwavering confidence in his ability has buoyed him throughout his slump, while he admitted that he feels at home pulling the strings in the middle of the park. "He (Zola) always says he is going to keep faith in me. I felt really comfortable playing centrally against Blackburn. In the first half I felt I was back to playing as I know I can play. "With all the injuries we have had you have to play a few different roles, but when you have got the respect for a manager like Zola, you don't mind where you play for him, he treats you the right way and I'm happy to do that."
Zola may have stumbled across a temporary solution to the club's injury problems, employing a new system that also managed to bring the best out of Noble. The Italian deployed Scott Parker and Radoslav Kovac as the midfield anchors, giving Noble the license to roam further upfield and pick the passes for the front trio of Luis Boa Morte, Diego Tristan and David Di Michele. Certainly, Noble would prefer to occupy the same position in games to come, but he won't be complaining if he is asked to fill in elsewhere.

Tomkins taking the lead for depleted West Ham
8:00am Thursday 26th March 2009
Guardian Series

A SPATE of injuries to key members of West Ham's squad has threatened to scupper their bid for a Europa League place, but one player has helped ensure they remain on course after grabbing his opportunity to impress with both hands. Nineteen-year-old defender James Tomkins was drafted in to partner Matthew Upson at the heart of the Irons' backline after James Collins injured his hamstring against Bolton last month. It was a significant step up in class for the youngster, but he has been one of the team's star performers since being asked to fill in for the Wales international. Indeed, he was the only recognised centre-half in Saturday's match against Blackburn, following an injury to Upson, as he was paired with captain and right-back Lucas Neill. And he stepped up to the plate in style, snuffing out any danger as the hosts ventured forward in droves during a second-half bombardment at Ewood Park. Tomkins' man-of-the-match display drew plaudits from his manager, Gianfranco Zola. "He (Tomkins) has been excellent. He doesn't look like he's 19 years old, he looks like a veteran. I'm very pleased about him and the improvements he's made," said the former Chelsea frontman.
Tomkins is in much the same mould as another West Ham graduate, a certain Rio Ferdinand, in the sense that he is comfortable on the ball, has the ability to pick a pass and has a natural reading of the game. One person who has had the best possible view of the youngster's development is goalkeeper Robert Green, who has been mightily impressed with his performances. "I can't praise the defence enough," said the Hammers' custodian. "Tomka is coming on leaps and bounds. He is a tall lad, but he is learning that there are players in the Premier League who are so big and so strong, like (Blackburn striker) Jason Roberts, and you have got to know when to stand off someone and when to go in and challenge. He is picking that perfectly and being clinical out there. Every ball that came to him he seemed to win."

Ashton can see light at the end of the tunnel
braderz - Wed Mar 25 2009
West Ham Online

Dean Ashton believes he is finally making progress in his battle to bring an end to his injury problems. Dean has written off this season after suffering an ankle injury last September, but has taken a major step forward in his rehabilitation by jogging for the first time since he underwent a second operation on the problem last February, he told the Club's Official Website. "It's a light at the end of the tunnel point for me," Ashton said. "If you think about it, running forms a large part of training and playing for a footballer and to get to this stage again now is a real step up for me."
The forward is keen to make sure his rehab work is taken at a steady pace to ensure his recovery work is not rushed. He said: "The ultimate aim is to get back running and feel completely comfortable doing this, so I do everything one step at a time. It is good to have this as part of my programme now, though, and I will continue to work hard to take it further. "I want to come back when everything is right, not return prematurely and end up getting another injury, because all the hard work will be for nothing. If it means continuing to be patient and let things take as long as they need to, then that's what I will do."
The medical staff at West Ham are also making sure Ashton is making the right progress at the right time, while giving him as much encouragement as possible. "The manager and the staff here have all been keeping an eye on me and watching my progress closely. There is no easy way back from an injury that keeps you out for a long while, but as long as I know I am working my hardest and keep taking steps forward, then I know it is all heading the right way."
As well as his rehab work, Ashton is keeping tabs on his team-mates and is delighted to see the likes of Carlton Cole, Robert Green and Matthew Upson being picked at international level. "I think we are doing very well. Considering we have had a few injuries of late, the lads who have come in have added to the team's good form and it's great to see the boys getting the results. "I am also pleased to see the boys playing for England. Matty, Greeny and Coley all have been playing really well and deserve to be in the squad. Coley has been on top form and has done well and I am sure, when he gets it, he will take his chance again."

West Ham and England defender Matthew Upson grateful for Italian influence

With Italy renowned for a more tactical approach, Upson says that both West Ham and England have improved through combining their traditional high-tempo qualities with a style that places greater emphasis on retaining possession. "There are a lot of similarities in their character and the way they view football," said Upson. "They definitely have a real tactical knowledge and I think Italian football is very tactical compared to the English game. Terry: I'd love to serve Queen "We are a bit more high tempo but I think both managers have brought a tactical awareness to the teams and that will make us more difficult to beat and maybe a better structured team. "At the top level it's the only way you can play football. Gianfranco Zola certainly views it that way and he played the game in that fashion as a real talented flair player who liked to pass and moving the ball, and Fabio Capello is very much the same. We have to play and pass the ball and when we don't have we have to get the right shape and be tough to break down."
Upson, who has already won six caps under Capello, believes that England may have learnt most from their recent 2-0 defeat against Spain, the European champions.
"It was a massive test and experience, you're probably playing against one of the best teams in the world right now," he said. "It was a good opportunity to put ourselves up against those calibre of players so it was a good experience for us. There are big lessons to be learned in defeat, people often say that you learn more about yourself when you lose than when you win. " It's never a nice experience to lose a game obviously, but you need to take the positives out of the game and learn a lot from the things we didn't do well enough. That's something the manager has analysed since that game. "The 10 day get-togethers are the only real time you get a bit of rhythm and routine in the training sessions and the daily routine generally. We make full use of these days and the manager always says to us at training 'You can't have this day again', so when we train it's important that we focus and concentrate almost as if we were playing."
Upson is likely to be the main cover to John Terry and Rio Ferdinand at centre-back for the forthcoming games, though Capello will use a more experimental line-up for Saturday's friendly match against Slovakia. Steven Gerrard yesterday trained on the left of midfield, with Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry operating in the centre, while Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey are expected to renew their partnership in attack. With Shaun Wright-Phillips struggling with an ankle injury, Aaron Lennon is competing with David Beckham for a place on the right of midfield.

International friendly: England v Slovakia, Saturday, 5.15pm

Matt Upson has admitted England owe their Wembley fans a big performance. England boss Fabio Capello has already warned that playing at Wembley has become a "psychological" barrier after a string of disappointing results and performances. But Upson believes England can win over the Wembley faithful in the match with Slovakia and next Wednesday's World Cup qualifier with Ukraine. The centre-back said: "It's important and I think it's something we really need to work on to bring that level of performance from our away games back to Wembley. "A lot of people have said that perhaps we haven't performed as well as we should at the new Wembley and they've probably got a right to say that. "I think it's up to us to understand why we haven't performed and put that right and get some really good team performances and good results there. "It's such a fantastic arena to play in and I'm sure the team will be giving it everything they've got."

Gianfranco Zola is desperately hoping his West Ham stars emerge unscathed from international duty. The Hammers are currently eyeing a place in next season's revamped UEFA Cup but are down to the bare bones with midfielders Valon Behrami and Jack Collison both injured, while Dean Ashton and Danny Gabbidon are long-term absentees. And after offloading a whole host of players in January, Zola is desperate for the likes of Carlton Cole, Robert Green and Matthew Upson to return fully fit with the Italian's options being severely restricted by the latest Upton Park injury crisis. "In January we had something like 24 players," said the West Ham boss. "Players were not playing and I don't like having players that were not playing regularly, especially if they are important players. "That's why we decided to sell some players and give some players the opportunity to play. "But then I didn't plan that I was going to have Behrami injured or Collison injured, that is part of the football. "I believe that the team is good enough and the squad is good enough to end the season and achieve our objectives. "We are still there and have a few problems but we will see how they cope.
"It is an opportunity for me to see some young players and plan for the future. It is a good opportunity for me."
