WHUFC.com
Goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet has been included in the Turkey U18 squad for two meetings with Estonia
29.06.2010

West Ham United Academy goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet has been included in the Turkey Under-18 squad for a friendly double-header with Estonia next month.
Mehmet will join up with his international team-mates in Istanbul ahead of the fixtures, which will take place at the Ozel 2 Mac stadium on Tuesday 13 July and Thursday 15 July. The 17-year-old's call-up is the latest step in what has already been a successful international career for the London-based stopper. Mehmet, who has a Turkish father, was part of his nation's squad at the 2009 UEFA European U17 Championship finals, keeping a clean sheet as Turkey defeated England 1-0 in the group stage. Later last year, the tall goalkeeper played four times as Turkey reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U17 World Cup in Nigeria before losing to Colombia in a penalty shoot-out. At club level, Mehmet is one of a host of promising young goalkeepers at West Ham, making eleven FA Premier Academy League starts in 2009/10.

Alvin on Avram

Hammers great Alvin Martin has spoken about his thoughts on the new season under Avram Grant
30.06.2010

Alvin Martin is looking forward to the new Barclays Premier League season and says it is a chance to think positively for all things claret and blue. The Hammers legend is excited at the future of the team under new manager Avram Grant, with pre-season training set to start next week and the new Barclays Premier League season to follow the SBOBET Cup at the Boleyn against RC Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday 7 August. "The club have made an excellent choice in choosing Avram to be our next manager and I have high hopes for the team next season. "We move on and on to a new era at West Ham. "Avram is an excellent appointment. He has experience of working with top players, his time at Chelsea was probably under-rated. He did a terrific job, was never daunted by the size of the job and then tried to do the best he could at what must have been a very difficult time at Portsmouth with all what they had going on.
"He seems to me to be a steady character, no frills but just gets on with it all and as far as I am aware, had other offers. He chose to come here, chose West Ham as the club he wants to be at and I think is a good choice for West Ham."
Martin, now working as a football analyst for talkSPORT, believed the experience of last season when the team did not reach the heights it wanted, will stand them in good stead and said the stability of the club top and bottom will also help towards a rosier future. "The structure now is healthier, I am sure the owners will say there is still a lot to be done, but it is more sound now and that is a great thing for the supporters to hear. "We can start to look to build and go on, the traditions of the club are all part of this and hopefully we can enjoy a more tranquil time now."
The former West Ham captain said there was plenty of quality in the squad and together with a few new fresh faces like Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, saw no reason why the team could not enjoy a solid and positive season ahead. "We have very good players here already, young players in the first team as well as those still coming through. We have made one new signing already and I know the club are working hard to bring in others to add to what we have here already. "The players that were here last season will learn from last season but will also be looking to start from a clean slate under the new manager. Everyone will be wanting to get a good solid campaign in the league, with hopefully maybe a nice little cup run alongside that. "Whatever, they don't want to go through some of the experiences from last season again, but at the same time, it will stand them in good stead. Whether players have had a break all summer or have been in the World Cup, once it starts getting near, they will all be raring to go again for the new season. "The fans again can play their part and really get behind the team as that is important, but I am very optimistic for the new season for my old club."

Lee delighted to sign
WHUFC.com
Olly Lee is targeting a first-team place after signing a new contract with West Ham United
30.06.2010

Olly Lee is ready to impress manager Avram Grant after signing a new contract with West Ham United. The midfielder saw his first year as a professional ruined by illness and injury, being laid low with a draining bout of glandular fever and suffering a troublesome leg injury. Lee returned to action in fine style, scoring a fantastic long-range goal in the 3-2 Barclays Premier Reserve League South victory over Fulham at the Boleyn Ground before impressing in Academy Director Tony Carr's Testimonial match in May. Now, with the start of pre-season training less than a week away, the 18-year-old is ready to make up for lost time by impressing new manager Grant. "The summer has been really good," said Lee, who has noticeably bulked up since the end of the previous campaign. "I've worked really hard to get my fitness up so I hope this season will be a big season for me. "I had a holiday and relaxed for a bit, but ever since then I've been training most days and working as hard as I can to make this season my season. "I've been doing a bit of everything. We've been given a fitness programme so I've been following that and also doing my own little bits. I know what I've got to do to get my body how it should be. "I'm trying to put a bit of muscle on and get a bit stronger because I've got to be strong enough to compete with everyone else."
The midfielder, who turns 19 on 11 July, is aware he faces a battle to force his way into Grant's plans, with the likes of Hammer of th Year Scott Parker, new signing Thomas Hitzlsperger, Mark Noble, Radoslav Kovac, Jack Collison, Valon Behrami and Luis Boa Morte competing for a spot in the West Ham engine room. Despite the competition for places, the teenager, who describes himself as "a midfielder who gets about, can pass the ball and hopefully score a few goals", is up for the challenge. "There are a lot of players in my position, but I see the situation that they are there are the moment, but I'm going to push them out of the way and get there myself. I've got time ahead of me and I aspire to be better than them."
When asked what he hopes to achieve over the coming 12 months, Lee has twin aims - the first is to stay fit, while the second is to continue the development that began when he joined West Ham at the age of 14. "Hopefully I can steer clear of illness and injury for starters! Hopefully, if I can do that and I'm in and around the first team, then I can push on here. If not, I'll look to go out on loan and go from there. I'm very open-minded and positive towards everything this season. "The new manager coming in could be good for me because he doesn't know anything about me. If I can impress in pre-season, then who knows what could happen?"

Former West Ham star Calum Davenport 'butted' sister
BBC.co.uk
10:13 GMT, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 11:13 UK

Footballer Calum Davenport denies attacking his sister A Premiership footballer attacked his pregnant sister after turning up drunk at her Bedfordshire home in the middle of the night, a court has heard. Former West Ham defender Calum Davenport, 27, of Moors View, Greenfield, called her a "whore" before headbutting her, Luton Crown Court was told. Her boyfriend then tracked down Mr Davenport and stabbed him. Mr Davenport denies causing actual bodily harm to his sister Cara, 29. Prosecutor Beverley Cripps said Mr Davenport's sister Cara was asleep in the house along with her four-year-old son Calum Junior when Mr Davenport and his father woke her up at 0200 BST on 22 August last year. "He went there when he was drunk and his father was also drunk. "They started putting questions to her. Unfortunately the questions were made in terms that were very abusive. "Cara's son Calum Junior is mixed race and his father is unfortunately in jail. "The father of the child she was carrying is also a mixed race gentleman."
The prosecutor said Mr Davenport called his sister a "whore" and made abusive comments. In the porch, Mr Davenport is said to have pushed his sister in the face so she fell back onto the stairs. He started to headbutt her and in the struggle bit her cheek. She managed to escape from her brother and contacted her boyfriend Worrell Whitehurst. He tracked the player to Mr Davenport's mother's house and stabbed him repeatedly in the leg, nearly ending his career. Whitehurst has pleaded guilty to a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on Calum Davenport and causing actual bodily harm to his mother Kim Stupple, who had tried to get in between them.
The trial continues.

Attack accused footballer was 'defending father'
14:27 GMT, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:27 UK
BBC.co.uk

Footballer Calum Davenport denies attacking his sister A footballer who attacked his pregnant sister was trying to protect his father, a court has heard. Former West Ham player Calum Davenport is accused of attacking his sister Cara after she fell pregnant again by a different man, Luton Crown Court heard. Mr Davenport called the mother-of-one a "form of cancer" in a row over how she was going to support the child, the court was told. Mr Davenport denies causing actual bodily harm to Miss Davenport. The court was told Mr Davenport, of Greenfields, Bedford, headbutted his 28-year-old sister five or six times before biting her cheek during the attack at her home in Collie Road, Bedford, in the early hours of 22 August last year.
Mr Davenport said he was acting in self-defence and had stepped in after his sister, who was seven weeks pregnant, started punching his father Curtis. He told police he had drunk eight pints of lager over six hours following a golf competition before going with his father to his sister's home. They drank tea before an argument began over how she was going to pay for her second child. The court heard Mr Davenport told officers: "My dad put the question to her, 'Are you sure this is what you want because this is it?' "As he said that to her she went for my dad and started hitting him around the face. That's why I got in between and grabbed her wrists. "We fell over and smashed heads. She was going mental at this point and I put my head to her head and we collided heads on two or three occasions. "I did see my sister had bruises to her face which I apologise for."
Pc Vito Napoli told the court Miss Davenport had claimed in a statement following the incident that her brother had racially abused her, something she later denied in court. She said that when Mr Davenport and his father arrived at her house demanding a beer, a row erupted over how she was going to pay for her second child. The court heard the former England under-21 footballer regularly paid for her four-year-old son Calum Junior's clothes, holidays and also helped her with rent. Miss Davenport said she went to push her father away from the house, but her brother intervened, bundling her back into the house against the stairs. After repeatedly head-butting her, he grabbed her by the hair and battered her head against a wall as her son shouted "get off my mummy, get off my mummy", the court heard. The case continues.

West Ham are being linked with a move for teenage striking sensation Neymar da Silva. The 18-year-old striker - who scored FIVE goals for current club Santos in one game earlier this year - has been linked with a string of clubs in recent weeks but could be set to join the Hammers on a season-long loan deal, according to reports. Manchester City were reported earlier in the year to have secured first refusal on the 5'8" striker although Chelsea are now thought to be favourites to land the player on a permanent basis.

Elsewhere the Mirror are linking United with an audacious £10million move for Nice striker Loic Remy. The 23-year-old, who can also operate on the flanks and in midfield, had previously expressed a desire to join Arsenal - a team he claims to have supported as a boy - although that deal is unlikely to go through following Arsenal's capture of another former United target, Marouane Chamakh.

Also linked with a move to England, this time by The Sun, is 22-year-old Mexican Efrain Juarez. The paper claims that West Ham are 'lining up' a £6million bid - although this one should be treated with a degree of caution due to Avram Grant already having his full quota of midfielders. With regard to other targets - namely Portsmouth's Kevin-Prince Boateng and Nigerian duo Vincent Enyeama and Yakubu Ayegbeni, both of whom worked with Grant in Israel - there is no fresh news, although Boateng has been heavily linked with a move to Italy since impressing in the World Cup Finals.

The great and the good
KUMB.com
Filed: Tuesday, 29th June 2010
By: Kit Robinson

I am sure that fans of other Premier League teams feel that their clubs input into England, with regard to important players or the number of their players, is as important as West Ham's, whether its Spurs, Chelsea or Man United.

Of course we have to put up with the media portrayal of our club as the has-been minnows who believe 'we won the World Cup', rather than the fact we have continuously supplied many England squad players over the years.

It is the case though that the current England squad is full of players who West Ham fans have seen raised at our club and leave to play for other clubs. The fact is that players such as Ferdinand, Lampard, Cole, Johnson, Defoe etc are good players, but they are not great. They play a lot better with the talent around them on the pitch at club level at better clubs than West Ham and sadly the vast majority of the talent which surrounds them is foreign.

Frank Lampard for instance was a good player at West Ham but was limited by the lack of quality players around him and that is why he only scored below 10 goals a season with us. Whilst at Chelsea we see him score double that because of the players around him doing a lot of the graft in order to leave him free to get into the box to score, and so his goal tally is double what he scored with us. I am sure that Everton fans could argue the same about Wayne Rooney when he was with them and whilst with England.

A major reason why the Premier League sells so well globally is because of the interest of foreign fans watching their compatriots and national representatives playing in it, not only because of their nationality but also their skill. English fans of the Premier League view world football through the Premier League bubble. We believe we see the best of world football because we have expensive foreign players playing in it.

However, you only have to look at a team like Mexico to see that the vast majority of those players do not play in the Premier League but the overall ability of the team in passing and control (as typified by Guillermo Franco) is better than the vast majority of English players. Particularly if you consider that those basic skills are better than the majority of England squad members despite them being considered to be the cream of the English crop.

I believe that this is proven by the continually minimal number of English players playing abroad. The reason being, English players are simply nowhere near the same level of overall skill as foreign players. Real Madrid could afford the likes of Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard. They are not considered because they are overpaid in the Premier League for how good they are.

The fact is, that there are vastly more skilled players in leagues around the world, however, this top talent helps our English players in the Premier League. Take those foreign players away and surround them with other English players and they all become above average rather than the exceptional talent we believe they are week in, week out. It would be very interesting to see how well a team of solely English players would do playing a season either in England or even abroad.

You only have to look at the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish national team to see this theory in action. There are in effect, two winning teams in the SPL, Rangers and Celtic. They have a few Scottish players but the majority are foreign. Now look at their national team. It consists of second-rate players and this is slowly what is happening to England. So what can be done to halt this decline and improve the English talent?

The theory is that by having foreign players playing in the Premier League that this somehow rubs off on the up and coming kids at each club. There is an element of that being the case but then that can be counteracted by the argument that there are so many foreign players that the English players will simply not get a game. Evidence of this is the number of English players at our top clubs who are leaving so they can get regular football. I believe that Scott Parker is a good example of this. However, at the same time this also reinforces the assertion that they are simply not as good as the foreign players.

The great thing about a World Cup is that it opens our eyes to talent across the world, playing in other leagues. Sadly at this world cup it has shown very clearly that other footballers around the world are basically better than we are and certainly not how good we like to think we are. I fear though that until the Premier League bubble bursts, and considering the near demise of both West Ham and Portsmouth it looks like it is reaching bursting point, little will change.

Because of similar financial difficulties to the Premier League in Serie A in Italy, recently there has been a decline in the number of foreign players in Italy and look what happened to Italy in this world cup. It will take time but I am certain that because of the necessity in investing in Italian youth, Italy will rise again on the world stage.

Of course I am not suggesting the removal of foreign talent from the English game but for the sake of developing English talent through youth systems and making sure those players actually get to play regularly at the top level, and to counter the financial difficulties apparent in the game, a similar approach to the Italian model needs to be implemented. It will mean a drop in skill for a while but so long as the infrastructure is imposed in the same way as the German's also have and how Sir Trevor Brooking has tried to insist upon to the FA, then the level of skill will rise again but it will take time.

We have a great youth structure in the UK, West Ham obviously have their very successful academy and as a club really need to work on not only developing those players but retaining them. Obviously other clubs have great youth systems such as Man Utd and Everton and others but there does seem to be a trend, particularly from the likes of Arsenal, in raising the foreign talent from a youth level. It is time for the emphasis to be on English youth players, developing them, and spending the money saved on transfer fees to retain their services. However of course, teams like West Ham will forever have the 'I want to play Champions League football' argument to contend with.

Sullivan and Gold have already stated that our Academy is vital. It's difficult to believe how West Ham United Football Club has survived without it. In fact it wouldn't have and quite rightly Tony Carr has received his deserved MBE. But it is not just West Ham that need an academy to survive and prosper, English Football desperately needs it too.

Young full back Jordan Brown has signed pro terms with West Ham United. The youth team captain, who plays mainly on the left side of defence becomes the fourth Academy youngster to sign a professional contract this summer as the club looks to bring through the next batch of youngsters. Talking to whufc.com following the signing of his new contract, Benfleet-born Brown - the cousin of Sunderland winger Kieron Richardson - said: "It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it's the best news I've heard. This is what I've always wanted to do. I've been confident the whole way through and have always worked hard to pursue my dream. I've seen loads of boys come and go, some of whom were really good players, so to come through is something special."
Brown - who first joined the Hammers aged eight - joins trio Cristian Montano, Callum McNaughton and Ahmed Abdulla, all of whom have (or will in Abdulla's case) signed their first pro contract this close season.

Pumas - No bids for Juarez
Mexican club confirm West Ham have not made offer for full-back

Pumas have denied that West Ham have made a bid for Mexico international defender Efrain Juarez. Juarez and team-mate Pablo Barrera have both impressed during the World Cup finals and have been linked with moves away from the Mexican club. Lazio have made a move for winger Barrera, while West Ham have been strongly linked with a swoop for full-back Juarez. "We know that during a World Cup many teams eye players and ask about them, but we have to stay calm because sometimes it's only that," Pumas sports director Mario Trejo said. "We will only consider anything if they have a real interest once they send us an offer. "
Trejo confirmed Lazio's interest, admitting: "We have received a fax in our offices sent by Lazio in which they asked us about the situation of Pablo Barrera and if there were any chances of starting a negotiation. "Our president has answered that Pumas accepts to talk about negotiations so it is supposed that in the next hours they should send us an offer."
And on the interest in Juarez, he added: "The same happens with Efarin Juarez. We haven't received any offer but his agent has said to us that some teams have approached him asking about the player but they haven't sent anything to us for the moment."

West Ham legend Steve Potts confident Avram Grant can improve the Hammers

Former West Ham defender Steve Potts believes new manager Avram Grant can bring the glory days back to Upton Park following consecutive seasons staving off the threat of relegation. Grant joined West Ham in early June having left relegated side Portsmouth and the former Chelsea boss is seen by Hammers legend Potts as experienced enough to lead West Ham in a positive direction domestically. "Avram Grant has had some big jobs, " Potts told West Ham's official website. "There is a lot of experience there and hopefully he can turn the club round. "There are people in place to put it right. "It is Avram's job to sort out the playing side and hopefully they can move on and do better than last year." Potts spent over 17 years playing for West Ham, making 399 league appearances and scoring just one goal in a 7-1 demolition of Hull City in 1990.

Brazil goalkeeper Doni tipped for West Ham as Roma look to take Valon Behrami in exchange
Daily Mail
Last updated at 4:37 PM on 29th June 2010

Roma have joined the race to sign West Ham United wide man Valon Behrami. Reports in Italy suggest the 25-year-old former Lazio player is keen on a return to the 'Eternal City', but the two clubs are thought to be some way apart in how they value Behrami. West Ham are prepared to listen to bids for the Switzerland international, which has also alerted Palermo, and a £8.5million fee has been mooted. However, Roma are reluctant to even match the £5m that the Hammers paid Genoa for Behrami five years ago and the Serie A side would rather take him on an initial loan. A compromise could be to offer Brazil goalkeeper Doni in part-exchange. The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Olympic Stadium and has previously been offered to Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham. However, the West Ham hierarchy's hopes of selling off current No 1 Robert Green for a bumper fee have been hit by the England international's World Cup to forget.

Remy rejects Hammers in favour of Arsenal move

Nice have reportedly rejected an offer from West Ham for forward Loic Remy, with the striker issuing a come and get me plea to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. Remy, dubbed the "New Henry" is a confirmed target of Arsenal boss Wenger and is on the Frenchman's summer shortlist, however the new Hammer's boss Avram Grant is eager to sign the highly rated forward to spearhead his new Boleyn Ground attack.

The 23-year-old French attacker has scored 14 goals in 34 Ligue 1 appearances this term and hopes that his exploits have been enough to turn the head of Europe's elite, as Gunner's boss Arsene Wenger and Hammer's gaffer Avram Grant weigh up their respective summer transfer window options. Arsenal boss Wenger has had Remy watched on a number of occasions by Chief French Scout Gilles Grimandi, with the scout admitting publicly that Remy has the potential to be an Arsenal player. The former Arsenal utility man said in January: "He has one of the greatest potentials in France and perhaps even in Europe over the next five years. But we are looking for a player who will enhance our strength very quickly because we lack this." According to the French press West Ham are preparing a bid in the region of £8 million, with Grant hoping to clinch the striker's signature with Wenger having swooped for the Bosman signing of Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh.

According to the French press Remy is not interested in a move to West Ham, and is only interested in leaving Nice for a move to the Emirates, with the player stating on a number of occasions his admiration for Wenger and his eagerness to follow in the footsteps of Gunner's legend Thierry Henry. While interest from West Ham and Avram Grant intensifies Remy has voiced officially that his preferred destination is the Emirates stadium. In May Remy issued an open come and get me plea to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "Arsenal are the club I want to join. I won't deny they are my priority. Arsenal are a young, ambitious side and I love to watch them play," he recently told RMC. "It is the ideal place for me. I spoke with Thierry [Henry] about them and asked him lots of questions about life there. "That is because I have been an Arsenal fan since I was little. I was not disappointed with what he told me."

It is unknown whether Arsenal have formally contacted the club, however Arsene Wenger did hint earlier this summer following the arrival of Marouane Chamakh that he was only looking to strengthen defensively at the Emirates stadium.

Behrami wants to join Roma Tuesday 29 June, 2010
Football-italia.net
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Ham United's former Lazio full-back Valon Behrami is keen to return to Italy and join Roma this summer. The Swiss international is up for sale and Roma are in the market for a defender after selling their remaining stake in Marco Motta to Udinese. Il Corriere dello Sport understands that Behrami has told his agent he would like a move to Roma even though it will almost certainly inflame Lazio's supporters. West Ham have set an asking price believed to be around €6m for Behrami and his ordinary World Cup campaign means his value is unlikely to have increased. Roma's No 1 priority this summer is to sign Nicolas Burdisso on a permanent basis from Inter, but first they will have to sell someone, most likely Julio Baptista. The same goes for Behrami who is just one among several candidates for Roma's backline.

Former England goalkeeper Richard Wright to snub West Ham United & join Crystal Palace - report

Former England and Ipswich Town goalkeeper Richard Wright is believed to be on the verge of rejecting a chance to join West Ham United, and will instead reunite with his former boss George Burley at Crystal Palace. The 32-year-old shot-stopper was previously reported to be a target for the Hammers, who were thought to be on the lookout for a back-up to current first-choice 'keeper Robert Green. But The Daily Mail reports that Wright - who has also had spells at Arsenal and Everton - is set to give the Hammers the cold shoulder and walk into Selhurst Park instead. It is believed that the arrival of the namesake of one of the the founding members of Pink Floyd could herald the exit of Julian Speroni to either QPR or - ironically - West Ham.

Blair the scholar
WHUFC.com
Promising midfielder Blair Turgott cannot wait to start life as a full-time West Ham United scholar
29.06.2010

For many of Blair Turgott's friends, the summer holidays are just beginning. In the case of the West Ham United and England Under-16 midfielder, the hard work is about to start. Just a few days after completing his GCSE examinations, Turgott will join 12 of his old schoolboy team-mates at Little Heath to begin lives as full-time scholars. Turgott enjoyed a superb 2009/10 season, excelling for both club and country. Not only did the 16-year-old make 12 FA Premier Academy League and FA Youth Cup appearances for the Hammers, but he also found time to help England win the Victory Shield and reach the final of the prestigious Montaigu Tournament in France in April. "Last season was a good season, to be fair. I think we did well. Personally I put in some good performances, so I was happy. "We had a good team both individually and all together. Hopefully we can push on both individually and as a team for the Under-18s. "It was hard at first to get used to it and to adapt to the physical side of it. Facing stronger players was difficult, but I think I got better as I went along and got used to the whole thing."
Turgott is naturally delighted to have been offered a scholarship for the club he has represented since the age of eight, but he knows there are still many hurdles to jump before he can celebrate becoming a Barclays Premier League footballer. "It's good to have the security of two years, but this is where the work starts really. I want to really push on and get into the first-team squad as quickly as possible. "I've been here since the Under-9s. I've improved every season and have been playing all this time to get my scholarship and now I've got it."
While Turgott's immediate aim is to cement his place in Academy Director Tony Carr's U18s, the talented teenager is also hoping to represent England at U17 level. "I'll be an Under-17 this season and hopefully both myself and Matthias [Fanimo] can push on and continue to be involved with England. We're looking forward to the tournament, as there is nothing better than representing your country. "We have got a good team. We won the Victory Shield and got to the final of the Montaigu Tournament before losing on penalties, so hopefully we'll continue doing well. I was unbeaten at Under-16 level, because I don't consider penalties losing - that was a draw in my book!"
Alongside Turgott and Fanimo, England U17 forward Robert Hall, goalkeepers Jake Larkins and David Wootton, defenders Danny Potts, Kenzer Lee and Jake Young, midfielders Dominic Vose, Jack Powell, Declan Hunt, Lamar Hurley and forward Dylan Tombides will all begin life as scholars on Monday 5 July.

Saturday deadline for price freeze
WHUFC.com
Supporters will have to move fast if they want to make sure they hang on to their season ticket
29.06.2010

Fans have limited time left to take advantage of the price freeze on season tickets. The renewal deadline is 5pm this Saturday, 3 July, meaning those who get their application in before will be able to take advantage of the price freeze on last season - save for the Government's VAT increase. New applicants can also benefit from this great offer, provided of course they contact the club in time.

After the deadline, there will be an increase of 2.5 per cent on season ticket prices. Also, fans should note that any prime season tickets unsold will be made available to those who have already approached the club looking to snap up the best possible views.

With two major London rivals among the first to visit the Boleyn Ground, the enthusiasm and expectation is building for the new campaign. Chairman David Sullivan said: "This is a very challenging opening with both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in our first three games at home. I know the fans will be up for it and we need their support to help us in two big derby matches.

"It is a very tricky start to the season with three of the top four teams from last season in the first six games and the 'easier' games are Aston Villa and Stoke away! That is why we acted quickly this summer to bring in a new manager and start rebuilding the squad so that we can hit the ground running once it all gets going in August."

With a new manager in place in Avram Grant and Thomas Hitzlsperger leading the way for a raft of new signings, optimism is high for the 2010/11 campaign among the first team as well. The new recruits will complement the club's talented youngsters and seasoned professionals like Robert Green and Scott Parker.

Jordan joins
WHUFC.com
Youth-team captain Jordan Brown has agreed his first professional contract with West Ham United
28.06.2010

West Ham United are pleased to confirm that Under-18 prospect Jordan Brown has agreed his first professional contract with the club. The powerful, attack-minded left-back has been a central figure in Tony Carr's side over the past two seasons, making 45 FA Premier Academy League and FA Youth Cup appearances since his debut in a home win over Millwall in January 2008. Academy Director Carr identified Brown's leadership qualities, handing him the captain's armband for much of the 2009/10 season. Brown has also featured seven times at Barclays Premier Reserve League South level since making his debut as a substitute at Portsmouth in April 2009. A hard tackler who is strong in the air and composed in possession, the 18-year-old caught the eye during Carr's testimonial match in May 2010, getting forward regularly and providing an assist for youth-team colleague Cristian Montano.
The cousin of Sunderland and England midfielder Kieran Richardson, who he shared a pitch with for the first time during Carr's testimonial, Brown was initially spotted playing for Kingdown Rovers in his hometown of Benfleet, Essex as an Under-8. Having begun his career as a forward, Brown also turned out as a left winger and a centre-back before settling into his preferred role at left-back at the age of 15. "It's been a long time coming, but now I've signed my first contract it has made all the hard work worthwhile and is a good start," Brown told whufc.com "It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it's the best news I've heard. This is what I've always wanted to do. I've been confident the whole way through and have always worked hard to pursue my dream. I've seen loads of boys come and go, some of whom were really good players, so to come through is something special. "People who I haven't seen me for a while ask me if I'm still at West Ham and they can't believe I'm still here! It's only a start, though. I've got to impress. Hopefully I can do my bit, just like every other player wants to do their bit."

Brown broke into the reserve team midway through last season and is concentrating on establishing himself in Alex Dyer's side, while also catching the eye of new manager Avram Grant. "It's a new start for me and a new start for everyone. This season, I want to be in the reserves on a regular basis and I also hope to go out on loan because I've never played for any club other than West Ham - apart from Kingdown Rangers, of course!"

Brown was accompanied at his contract signing by his parents, who have been regular visitors to Little Heath over the past decade, delivering and collecting their son from training and watching him in action on Saturday mornings. "My parents have supported me the whole way through and I'm happy to have a family like them behind me all the time. They've been a great help."

As well as his famous cousin Richardson, the youngster also looks to West Ham's own Herita Ilunga, England defender Ashley Cole and France full-back Patrice Evra for pointers on how to improve his own game. Brown is the fourth Academy graduate to agree his first professional contract with the club this summer, following Montano and centre-back Callum McNaughton. A fourth second-year scholar, forward Ahmed Abdulla, will also become a professional after joining from Arsenal in summer 2008. First-year professionals Anthony Edgar, Matt Fry and Olly Lee have also agreed new contracts for 2010/11.

New season excites Potts
WHUFC.com
Steve Potts is like all Hammers fans when he says he cannot wait for the new campaign to start
28.06.2010

FIFA World Cup dreams may be over but that has simply served to focus the attention on the new club season and, according to Steve Potts, there is every reason to be excited. The Hammers great is looking forward to 2010/11 and believed the new manager Avram Grant can go from strength to strength. "There is a lot of optimism," Potts said, during an extended interview with WHUTV. " Avram Grant has had some big jobs. There is a lot of experience there and hopefully he can turn the club round. There are people in place to put it right. It is Avram's job to sort out the playing side and hopefully they can move on and do better than last year."
The two-time Hammer of the Year came through the ranks himself at the Boleyn and he is also encouraged by the plans to further promote the Academy. His son Daniel, unsurprisingly a promising full-back, has just signed scholarship forms with the club and Potts believed he was in the best possible place for his football education. "I am pleased for Daniel. He has been here since he was six or seven years old. To get a scholarship is a reward for how hard he is worked but the hard work starts now. With West Ham if you are good enough, you will get a chance. That is not the case at some clubs. You have always seen the young players coming through and the rowd appreciates that. It is down to the player then to make the most of it."

Remy calm over transfer talk
West Ham reported to have made move for French starlet
By Giscard Gourizro & Graeme Bailey Last updated: 28th June 2010

Loic Remy has told skysports.com he is 'relaxed' about his future, amid reports that West Ham United have made a bid for him. The 23-year-old striker is rated as one of the best prospects in Ligue 1 and has already been capped by France. Labelled as the 'New Thierry Henry' for a number of years, Remy opted to leave Lyon for Nice in 2008 and he has impressed ever since. French champions Marseille and his former club Lyon, are very keen on Remy, whilst Italian clubs AC Milan and Fiorentina were strongly linked last year. Arsene Wenger is thought to be a long-term admirer of Remy but West Ham are now reported to have firmed up their interest. French sources claim The Hammers have lodged a bid of €12million (£9.8million) However, it is also claimed that West Ham offered to pay the fee in three instalments of €4million - which Nice have rebuffed as they want most of the money up-front. The player himself insists he is letting Nice decide on his future. "I am returning back to training this week," Remy told skysports.com. "I am still a Nice player. If they decide to sell me, I will listen to offers and see what we can do, but I am relaxed and if nothing happens, I will be happy to stay here."

Clubs eye Simpson move
Battle on for Arsenal starlet
Last updated: 28th June 2010

Jay Simpson could be set to leave Arsenal this summer and a host of clubs are set to battle it out for his signature. The young forward is a product of the Gunners' highly-famed academy but is yet to make his Premier League debut. The 21-year-old has played for Arsenal in the Carling Cup and scored two goals in a 3-0 victory in his only ever start over Wigan, but he has never made a league appearance for the club and now looks set to leave. Simpson has spent much of the last three seasons on loan, with Millwall, West Brom and last term with Queens Park Rangers - where he hit double figures in the Championship. However, despite being highly thought of at Arsenal they are prepared to let him leave as he seeks regular first-team football. News of Simpson's availability is set to alert a host of clubs in the Premier League and Championship. West Ham, Fulham and Blackpool are all thought to be considering whether to offer him a Premier League chance, whilst Millwall, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff, Leicester City and QPR are all keen. Nigel Pearson looks set to become the Hull City manager and will also probably have Simpson on his hit list. His advisor Uben Gray confirmed Simpson could leave the Emirates Stadium. "Jay has had discussions with Arsene Wenger and Arsenal," he told skysports.com. "Everyone at the club only has good things to say about Jay, including Arsene, but they appreciate he needs to be playing first-team football. "And so they are ready to let him leave, but only if the deal is right for all parties." Simpson currently has a year left on his contract at Arsenal.

Avram Mex a move for Jaurez

WEST HAM are lining up a £6million bid for Mexico's highly-rated midfielder Efrain Juarez. The 22-year-old, who can play in central midfield and at right-back, is keen on a switch to the Premier League. West Ham officials are trying to keep the move under wraps, but boss Avram Grant is keen to wrap up a deal quickly.
Now the Hammers are hoping to finalise the switch in the next few weeks following Mexico's exit from the World Cup. Meanwhile, the club has launched an ambitious £10m bid to sign prolific Nice striker Loic Remy, 23, a target for Arsenal.

Dozy Hammers target fails English test

The Mirror

Christian Benitez has flunked his work permit English test for a second time. Ecuador striker Benitez, 24, is looking for another Premier League club after leaving Birmingham following a season-loan. West Ham have contacted Benitez's club Santos Laguna about taking the forward for a season with a view to a permanent deal. But Mirrorsport exclusively revealed in May that dozy Benitez failed a government required English test. Rules for migrants mean they must have a recognised qualification for speaking English if they are to remain in the country on a work permit. And he must now re-sit the test AGAIN this summer if he is to return to the UK after botching the paperwork for a second time. The hitman, who notched four goals for City, is valued at around £7.5million by his Mexican club. Hammers' owner David Sullivan, who took Benitez to St Andrews, is not willing to shell out for the striker. But Sullivan rates the forward and thinks he may fulfil his potential during a second season on loan in the Premier League.

Upson down and out
WHUFC.com
Goalscorer Matthew Upson endured World Cup woe with England as Germany
cruised to the quarter-finals
27.06.2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup adventure is over for Robert Green and Matthew Upson
after England lost 4-1 to Germany in their last-16 tie on Sunday. The
contest in Bloemfontein hinged on a disallowed Frank Lampard 'goal' which
was clearly over the line just after Upson had made it 2-1 with a well-taken
first-half header. Germany had raced into a two-goal lead through Miroslav
Klose and Lukas Podolski with the Three Lions' defence in disarray, but the
Hammers captain's strike led to plenty of half-time confidence of a
comeback. The second half saw Germany take full control but only after
Lampard had seen another effort crash against the German crossbar. Two
breakaway goals by Thomas Muller put paid to English hopes and mean there is
no West Ham representation left at the finals, with Green an unused
substitute, Jonathan Spector's United States eliminated by Ghana on Saturday
night and Valon Behrami's Switzerland failing in the group stage.

Joe Cole ready to decide club future
By Brian Lofrumento | 27th June 2010
PremiershipTalk.com

Following England's devastating World Cup Round of 16 defeat at the hands of
Germany, midfielder Joe Cole has revealed that he is now ready to decide his
club future. The West Ham youth product has seen his contract run out with
Premier League champions Chelsea, and after a less than inspiring season for
the Blues, Cole is ready to move on. "I want to get my future sorted as
quickly as possible. My season for Chelsea wasn't great for what I believe
were political reasons rather than footballing reasons. Carlo Ancelotti, I
love him, I've got big respect for him. I don't want to go on into it now.
It isn't the time," said Cole.
"It is not financial and it is nothing to do with Carlo. I love Carlo. I
think he is a top guy and a top manager. I loved my time at Chelsea, I love
the fans but it is a story for another day and I will tell it but now is not
the time. "I want to have a couple of weeks off, want to sort my future out
as soon as possible, go on holiday with my family. Next season I want to
have a fantastic season for England and whatever club I am at. "The next
contract I sign will be a footballing decision. I want to play in a more
central position. I want a manager who has faith in me and I'm talking about
club football here. It is a big decision for me and my family but I'm open
to anything at the moment. "I have purposely not spoken to anyone while I've
been here because that wouldn't be fair on England. My phone has been turned
off but now I want to sort it all out."
Cole has been heavily linked with potential moves to Manchester United,
Tottenham Hotspurs, and Arsenal, and few expect him to settle on a location
outside of England. Harry Redknapp, who is a known admirer of Cole, has been
insisting all summer that Cole's future has already been decided.

Matthew Upson admits England were not good enough to beat Germany
West Ham star disappointed with display...
By Niall McGlone
27 Jun 2010 19:55:00
Goal.com

England defender Matthew Upson has admitted that Fabio Capello's men weren't
good enough in their embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Germany that saw them crash
out of World Cup 2010. England fell to their heaviest ever World Cup finals
defeat in Bloemfontein to end any hope of glory in South Africa. Germany
took the lead through Miroslav Klose when England's back four failed to deal
with a Manuel Neuer goal kick. The Schalke 04 'keeper pumped the ball long
to Klose who raced away from Upson and prodded home when faced one-on-one
with David James. Lukas Podolski doubled the Germans lead just after the
half hour mark when Thomas Mueller got in behind the England back line
before squaring to Podolski, who struck the ball past James. "I thought the
first goal, the ball took a kind of bizarre sail in the air and carried
further than we all anticipated," said Upson. "The second goal was really
good movement by them [Germany]. They passed some great one touch balls."
Upson himself gave England a glimmer of hope in a game that had looked
beyond them when he headed home a Gerrard cross to take the scores to 2-1.
Less than a minute later the scores should have been level when Lampard
lobbed Neuer and the ball bounced over the line off the crossbar, but
appeals for a goal were waved away by the officals. "I thought we came back
really well in the game, showed some real character, and should have gone in
at half time at 2-2," added Upson. "We came out in the second half and for
the first 15-20 minutes had control of the game and pressed to score. "It
was that eagerness to get the goal that led us to being a bit open."
Germany yet again exposed England's frailties at the back when
Schweinsteiger raced away on the counter attack before playing in Muller to
smash the ball past James. It was a similar story just minutes later when
Ozil capitalised on space left by the England defence and the highly-rated
midfielder teed up Muller for a simple second. "All I can say is that you
have 11 players go out there and give 100 per cent and we weren't good
enough to get the result," conceded Upson. "I can't explain the
performances, I don't think they have been as bad as people are talking
about but that's just my opinion." The defeat now means that England have
been knocked out by Germany in their last five meetings at major
tournaments.

Time for Harry?
West Ham Till I Die

There's not a lot one can say after an England performance like that. Sure,
if the Lampard goal had been given, things might have turned out
differently, but like most of you, I have my doubts.

Defensively we were all over the place. The four defenders looked as if they
hadn't ever played together. Terry and Upson were abject from start to
finish. Glen Johnson played like he couldn't give a damn. Up front we showed
nothing. Rooney appeared as if he was only half there, while Defoe wasn't a
lot better. But even a half on form Defoe is better than Heskey. I mean what
kind of fool thinks bringing on a player like Heskey when you are 3-1 down
is actually going to turn a game round? What we eneded at that stage on
goals, so why bring on a player who rarely scores, rather than Peter Crouch
who has a record of scoring a goal every other game for England.

Steven Gerrard was woeful today, as was Milner. Barry looked busy and
Lampard had his best game of the tournament, but by his standards it was
still very average.

One of the main problems was the the middle of the pitch was too crowded. No
width at all – but if you don't play with natural wingers, what do you
expect?

What a very disappointing afernoon. In theory, man for man, you'd say we
should have beaten this German team. But they played as a team and we
didn't.

Yes, you have to blame the players for their abject performances, but if
they are playing in an unnatural system, and in unnatural positions, this is
what happens.

Virtually everyone could see Gerrard should have been playing behind Rooney
and not out on the left, but Capello was having none of it. Terry was
playing in the wrong side of central defence. Gerrard was playing in an
unnatural position. Go figure.

I don't normally believe in getting rid of managers at the first sign of
grapeshot, but in this case I cannot see how Capello can stay. And do you
know who I'd have succeed him? Harry Redknapp. No kidding. We need an
England manager who has a record of inspiring teams. Roy Hodgson would be OK
too..

Walker's World Cup
WHUFC.com
Fans' favourite Jimmy Walker has spoken of his old mate Robert Green and
saving penalties
27.06.2010

Jimmy Walker has pledged his support for former team-mate Robert Green and
given his own view on penalties before England's big Sunday showdown with
Germany. The 36-year-old caught up with whufc.com this week and was keen to
back his old mate from his playing days at the Boleyn Ground - especially
for the attention he got following his uncharacteristic slip in the 1-1 draw
with the United States. "I was made up for Greeny to be part of the World
Cup, he works so hard and deserves this chance," said Walker, who
represented West Ham between 2004 and 2009. "It was brilliant he was chosen
to play in the first game. To play in the World Cup is a reward for all the
hard work. "It was devastating for him to have what happened to him in the
game. But you know, he recovered well, made a great save in the match
afterwards and had a strong rest of the match - he made a mistake but who
doesn't make a mistake? "It is just that it led to a goal and was in front
of millions of people. He didn't let his country down, it just happened. "I
would have liked to have seen him play again in the next match, get it out
of his system. Don't get me wrong, Jamo [David James] has come in and done
well and so deserves his chance as well - but it would have been good for
Greeny to play again. "Hopefully England will continue to progress in the
tournament and you never know when his chance will come up again."

Having worked closely alongside Green in his time at West Ham, Walker
remembers the steely determination of the Hammers No1 to push himself and do
that bit more all the time to be at the top of his game. "The other lads
will tell you, I was never the best for being in the gym for instance," he
said with a smile. "Yet, Greeny would be in there, doing extra stuff. I
remember one time, a couple of days before we played Arsenal at the Emirates
in the 2006/07 season, when we were fighting relegation. "Me and Roy
[Carroll] were ready to go home after training that day, we had worked hard,
but we're in the car park and we looks over, there is Greeny back out on the
pitch with Ludo [Miklosko], doing kicks and other work. "We gave him a bit
of banter as you do about it, but it paid off. While Bobby Zamora scored the
only goal in a 1-0 win couple of days later, Greeny played out of his skin
that day and stopped about 50 shots from the Gunners ensuring we won the
game."

The goalkeepers union is often spoken about, with many saying the man in
between the sticks is a "different breed of footballer". Walker said that
applies to Green but added that he is also more of "a thinker" than most.
"He is a top lad, probably not like a typical goalkeeper. He thinks a lot,
is conscientious. I knew of him before he came to West Ham, but since coming
to West Ham, he has just got better and better. He is consistent. "As I
said, he is a strong character and will come out OK from all of this. He's
too good a goalkeeper and person to let it affect him and what he does for
West Ham."

Penalties are being spoken about ahead of the big last-16 date with Germany
this weekend. It was a spot-kick and resulting save that stands out as one
of Walker's most memorable times in the claret and blue. Six years ago, the
Hammers were at Stamford Bridge for a League Cup tie that Chelsea went on to
win 1-0, thanks to a Mateja Kezman strike, despite a spirited display from
Alan Pardew's side. Yet the moment of the match saw Walker forever endear
himself to the Hammers faithful. For Frank Lampard, former Hammers
midfielder and Academy graduate who is doing his bit as well for the
national side out in South Africa, the match saw him face the ire of the
massed ranks of West Ham fans behind Walker's goal. Just last month, Lampard
returned to the Boleyn Ground to pay tribute to Academy director Tony Carr
and was delighted to be given a positive reception by the Hammers fans.

But back in October 2004, in that capital cup tie, the mood was less
charitable from the travelling support, especially when it was Lampard who
stepped up to take a disputed penalty. Walker, who had enjoyed a solid game
until that point, takes up the rest of the story. "All our fans were behind
me and my goal - the support throughout had been fantastic - but as the
penalty was awarded, after I think Arjen Robben was pulled down in box, the
atmosphere stepped up a gear.
"The noise level went up three fold, but in between the cauldron of noise, I
could hear 'You had better save this Jimmy' and 'Come on Jimmy, you can't
let Frank score against us'. "I knew at the time, he received a lot of stick
from our fans, but I was like, I am going to get it in the neck big time, if
I don't save it or put him off to miss in some way! The pressure was
enormous on me! "I just kept thinking I have to save this, I have to save
this. Frank stepped up and I managed to go the right away and push it to
safety. "The roar of our fans behind me certainly told me I had done the
right thing and for weeks after that game, I had loads of letters thanking
me. "Even now, if I speak to a West Ham fan, they will mention 'that penalty
save'. "Obviously I was pleased to have saved that penalty from Frank that
night and from the reaction that followed was one of my best memories in a
West Ham shirt, but if he scores one for England on Sunday, we will all be
cheering him on."

Peters relishing Germany tie
WHUFC.com
1966 FIFA World Cup hero Martin Peters cannot wait to see England lock horns
with their greatest rivals
26.06.2010

With England facing their toughest test so far at the FIFA World Cup when
they take on Germany on Sunday, many fans will have their minds cast back to
past encounters between the two great rivals. Casting aside painful memories
of Italia 90 and Euro 96, England supporters have their own scorelines to
savour, most notable the 5-1 thrashing in Munich in qualifying for the 2002
World Cup and, of course, the 1966 World Cup final. One man who remembers
that day at Wembley 44 years ago is West Ham United great Martin Peters, who
scored England's opening goal that dramatic afternoon. Peters told whufc.com
that Sunday's meeting in Bloemfontein will be yet another titanic struggle.
"Its a situation thats quite difficult. We are starting to play better but
the Germans have been OK and they will also have Miroslav Klose back after
his red card."

Both sides were forecast to win their respective groups prior to the
tournament, though England found it harder than their next opponents to
progress to the last 16. Despite their travails in the group stage, the man
described by Sir Alf Ramsey as 'Ten years ahead of his time' is optimistic
the nation will have something to smile about on Monday morning. "They're a
younger side and so less experienced," said Peters, who knows a thing or two
about experience, having earned 67 caps during his distinguished eight-year
international career. "We have players who have been there before and I
think our experience will hold us in better stead. It will be tough, but
we'll win 2-1."

Though the occasion is slightly less important than it was in 1966, Peters
believes manager Fabio Capello will be offering the same words of wisdom as
Ramsey did all those years before. "He'll want them to work with each other,
to help each other out. Sir Alf just wanted us to play the same as we had
against Portugal in the semi-final, as we had played so well."

Capello's method of withholding the names of his starting eleven is
something that Ramsey wouldn't have believed in, however. "Before the
tournament, at least eight players knew they were in the side, especially
the goalkeeper and back four, it helped create solidarity." One player
Peters believes should be assured of his place against Germany is West Ham
captain Matthew Upson, who played a key role in the closing Group C victory
over Slovenia that ensured progression into the knockout stage. His
last-ditch tackle saved the nation's blushes and many, including the 1964/65
Hammer of the Year, feel he has done more than enough to retain his place.
"I believe he will play. Jamie Carragher is short on pace and Upson isn't,
so he will retain his place."

Brown backs Matt
WHUFC.com
Matthew Upson has been wished well by Ken Brown for Sunday's titanic tie
with Germany
25.06.2010

Ken Brown is confident Matthew Upson will rise to the occasion once again
when England take on Germany this weekend. The club legend, who played 386
league games at the back for the Hammers between 1953 and 1967, will be
keeping a particularly close eye on the Hammers captain when he lines up for
the FIFA World Cup last-16 tie on Sunday. Brown said Upson's display in the
1-0 win last Wednesday against Slovenia took him back to his own playing
days, and he is expecting another fine performance. "It was a bit 'backs to
the wall' which all centre-halves love," Brown told whufc.com. "I remember I
just seemed to revel in those games. The more they attack, the more you
destroy and get the ball away to safety. It is very satisfying. You feel
better and better as time goes on and you settle into it. "I bet he was
nervous as hell. It was his first game at the World Cup. I only got the one
England cap and that took me aback at the honour of it. You think 'Wow, I am
playing for my country' and I expect he was delighted to get the chance to
play in the tournament. "It was nice to see a player coming from West Ham
getting such recognition."
Brown, now 76 and still a regular visitor to the Boleyn, was particularly
praiseworthy for Upson's late tackle that made certain of the victory,
describing it "as good as scoring a goal". He added: "It was the icing on
the cake after a good performance. I believe you get your reward when you
keep working and training hard. You wait for your chance. If he had started
badly his confidence would have gone but that tackle showed that he was on
top of his game throughout."

Brown is looking forward to seeing the Germany encounter and turned his
thoughts back to when West Ham took on TSV 1860 Munich in the 1965 European
Cup Winners' Cup final. "We beat 1860 in the final a year before the 1966
World Cup and it was a very good game to play in. We got the better of it
that day but it was a tough game. "Germany will be very difficult. Everyone
is reliving the old days. They have always been a very disciplined side,
including their club teams, but they have flair as well. You always take
extra pleasure from a win against a German side because there have been so
many great matches between the two countries over the years. "You can never
underestimate them because they are always so well balanced. Nothing is
impossible in football. This team could go far. We have started badly and
gradually improved. We can't get too excited but if we make progress and get
a bit of luck, we can hope."

When it comes to memories of the greatest England defender of them all in
Bobby Moore, Brown is better placed to look back than anyone. It is Moore's
example that Brown suggested would be ideal for Upson and his team-mates to
consider when they take to the field in Bloemfontein. "Bobby's anticipation
of where the ball would be was terrific. I had the pleasure of playing
alongside him more than anyone else. I used to be nervous for him at times
when balls were coming down and would always cover round the back for him
thinking he is going to miss it. He never did. "The whole time he never
seemed to make a mistake and he always kept his composure in difficult
moments. He was unbelievably good. I hope this team can emulate him and that
side in 1966 but there is a long way to go. They all did well against
Slovenia and that will do them good on Sunday."

Hammers suffer double transfer blow

West Ham have suffered a blow after moves to sign Argentine legend Juan

FULHAM LINE UP ROB GREEN
News Of The World
By DAN KING, 26/06/2010

ROBERT GREEN is lined up to replace Mark Schwarzer at Fulham. With Schwarzer
poised to complete a move to Arsenal, England's blunder keeper is now the
Cottagers' prime target. West Ham No 1 Green, 30, had been reported to be on
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's shortlist. But Wenger has opted for Schwarzer,
37, as a short-term solution to his problem between the sicks. And with
Australia out of the World Cup, a £3.5million transfer is expected to be
completed in the next two weeks. Wenger is also said to be close to sealing
deals for a centre back and midfielder. Schwarzer's departure will leave a
vacancy at Europa League finalists Fulham, which Green is expected to fill.
Green has just one year left on his deal and has made it clear he wants to
leave Upton Park. And despite the gaffe which allowed Fulham's Clint Dempsey
to equalise for the USA in England's opening World Cup game, there will be
no shortage of potential new employers. Fulham boss Roy Hodgson was among
those to urge England boss Fabio Capello to keep faith with Green after the
mistake. Hodgson himself is also on the verge of leaving Craven Cottage to
take up the reins at Liverpool, but his exit will not affect Fulham's plans
to sign Green. The player was Fabio Capello's first-choice keeper while
David James was injured - but got replaced by James in South Africa after
the blunder.
Losing Green will leave West Ham with a big hole to fill, after they missed
out on Ben Foster, who chose to join Birmingham from Manchester United. New
Hammers boss Avram Grant took Portsmouth keeping coach David Coles to Upton
Park with him and both are fans of Asmir Begovic, who left Fratton Park for
Stoke in January. But Stoke boss Tony Pulis will resist any attempt to
snatch Begovic and West Ham are likely to have to look elsewhere. Sunderland
keeper Marton Fulop, who spent the end of the season on emergency loan at
Manchester City, is one option. Nigeria keeper Vincent Enyeama, linked with
the Hammers, insists his future will be sorted this week. The Hapoel Tel
Aviv keeper, 28, is set to leave Israel before the start of the new season.
Grant is an admirer but Enyeama has also attracted attention from a host of
top clubs including Arsenal and Sevilla. Enyeama said: "I expect to hear
something new within the next week. It's natural. Everybody wants to get
ahead in life so, obviously, I want to move to a different place."

BELHADJ SNUBS HAMMERS
News of the World
By ALEX CROOK, 26/06/2010

PORTSMOUTH'S Algeria World Cup star Nadir Belhadj will snub the chance to
follow Avram Grant to West Ham and will join Italian giants Lazio. Left-back
Belhadj is to open talks about a £3.5million move to Rome following
Algeria's South Africa exit. Belhadj (right) said: "I heard from my agent
about Lazio's interest. The Italian league is one of the best and being
approached by Lazio is a great honour for me." Belhadj, who joined Pompey
from Lens for £4m in January 2008, is among Grant's top targets. But Lazio
boss Edy Reja said: "Belhadj is one of the players we are going to focus on
and he has expressed a desire to come. "He's a player who is more offensive
than defensive and that appeals to us very much. "He usually plays in
defence, but defence in the Premier League is very different to that in
Italy."

Upson deserves to keep England role, says Derby County legend Roy McFarland
Saturday, June 26, 2010, 07:30
Telegraph.co.uk

Matthew Upson DERBY County legend Roy McFarland believes defender Matthew
Upson should keep his place in the England team for tomorrow's World Cup
showdown against Germany. Upson replaced the suspended Jamie Carragher for
Wednesday's crucial final Group C match against Slovenia. The West Ham
United player partnered John Terry at centre-back and helped Fabio Capello's
men to a 1-0 win that saw them through to the knockout stages of the
tournament in South Africa. Having served his one-match ban for accumulating
two yellow cards, Carragher is available again for the last-16 clash against
the Germans in Bloemfontein (3pm). But former England and Rams defender
McFarland thinks Capello should stick with Upson. "Matthew Upson was solid
at the back against Slovenia and I would keep him in the side as I prefer
him to Jamie Carragher," he said. "He is a lot more mobile and quicker than
Carragher and seems to have a better understanding with John Terry.
"Carragher is a genuine, honest player but is a little bit suspect,
pace-wise, which could expose him against the better teams. "Upson looked
sharp and read the game well. He also made a super challenge near the end to
deny Slovenia the chance of an equaliser."
McFarland, who won 28 international caps and was part of both Derby's
Championship-winning sides during the 1970s, also feels that holding
midfielder Gareth Barry will be key to England's chances of success. "I
think Gareth Barry will be very important to the team if they are to
progress further in the competition," he said. "That holding midfield role
is a key position and, if he is solid and picks up the pieces well, that
releases the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and James Milner, who
played very well in the last match, and offers them protection. "Gareth got
caught out a couple of times against Slovenia and gave away possession too
easily, which is unlike him, but we have to remember he only recently came
back from injury and I think he will get stronger with each game.
"If your midfield is not settled and well balanced, you won't be successful
at this level."
England's star man, Wayne Rooney, has not yet hit the heights at this World
Cup – and was substituted in the second half of the win over Slovenia.
"Rooney still doesn't look at the top of his game," McFarland added.
"Whether he is carrying an injury or is just tired, I'm not sure. "It has
been a long, hard season for the players and it is all about getting your
mind and body right. "Hopefully, the training will be easing off a bit now.
The players are all fit – they just need to be kept ticking over."
Rooney's strike partner in the Slovenia game, Jermain Defoe, netted the
winner after being drafted into the starting line-up to replace Emile
Heskey. "Defoe scored the all-important goal and might easily have had
another," said McFarland. "He gets on the blindside of defenders and has got
the pace to get in behind opposition teams. "He was very effective in doing
that against Slovenia."
But there may be a late twist in the England line-up as Ledley King might be
in contention to make a dramatic returnfor tomorrow's clash with Germany.
Coach Fabio Capello has confirmed that all 23 members of his squad trained
yesterday and are in contention for the match in Bloemfontein. However, the
odds must still be heavily against the Tottenham Hotspur man making it
considering the FA claimed he did not do any contact work in training. "All
the players trained. Everyone is fit to play," said Capello. "It is a good
feeling because if they trained they are fit to play."
King was Capello's first choice to partner John Terry in central defence but
injured his groin in the first minutes of the opening game against the
United States a fortnight ago. It was anticipated the 29-year-old would be
out of action for at least three weeks and although there have been some
encouraging noises about his fitness, the latest bulletin is unexpected.
owever, considering the time he has been out, it would still seem more
likely that either Matthew Upson will keep his place or Jamie Carragher will
return from suspension. With Aaron Lennon, Michael Carrick and, most
importantly, Wayne Rooney all shaking off ankle knocks, it will leave
Capello to choose from strength, knowing he has plenty of options should he
need them against England's old rivals. "I have more options, so I have to
choose," he said. "When you can choose 23 players it is better for me."

Is Christian Benitez the Striker that We Need?
West Ham Till I Die

There are reports that the club may be interested in doing a deal to secure
the services of Christian Benitez. He spent last season on loan at
Birmingham City. Significantly, perhaps, a deal set up by Gold & Sullivan
during their last season in control of the West Midlands club.

However, the new regime at St Andrews did not subsequently take up an option
to sign Benitez permanently, when his loan period ended, and he has now
returned to his Mexican club, Santos Laguna. Alex McLeish, commenting on
the decision not to sign him was quoted as saying that:

"We did have an agreement that the previous board put in place. He did
very well for us and I'm sorry to lose him, but the deal was too rich for
us."

There are two obvious questions here. Firstly, if the deal for Benitez is
too rich for Brum's blood, would West Ham go for it? Secondly, as a striker
did he actually do well enough last season? Benitez scored 4 goals in 36
matches for Brum in 2009-10. That is not exactly prolific, for instance,
Ilan's goal return was similar in far fewer matches.

His record at international level is more promising, with 10 goals in 30
matches, a ratio of 1 in 3. Apparently, Santos Laguna have quoted a £7m
transfer fee for his services. With Everton showing their usual reluctance
to sell us their players, the deal for Yakubu will probably not happen.
While the other much publicised potential deal for Henry appears to be a non
-starter, the riches of US football being a far greater attraction than
Upton Park and the PL.

West Ham need greater fire power next season, there is no doubt about that.
Ideally, we need a striker that can score 15-20 goals a season. However,
such players are at a premium and, if available, do not come cheap. So,
could Benitez do a job for us, or should the club be looking elsewhere?

There has also been a further report that a deal for Joe Cole remains a
possibility. We still have a offer on the table, along with Arsenal and
Spurs. Obviously, Cole will not make a decision on his future until after
the World Cup Finals. Financial details aside, both the gooners and Spurs
can offer Cole Champions League football next season. This probably means
that a return to the Hammers next season is unlikely, but you never know?

Finally, it has been reported that Matt Upson will keep his place for
England's last 16 match with old rivals Germany. Quite right! To drop him
for Ledley King or Jamie Carragher, after his performance against Slovenia,
would be totally unfair.

Good luck to Upson and the rest of the England team for Sunday's match. If
I remember correctly, Upson scored in the 1-2 friendly win over Germany, in
Berlin, a couple of years ago. A repeat Upson goal and England victory
would be most welcome.

Upson targets Germany win
WHUFC.com
Matthew Upson is ready for Sunday's big FIFA World Cup second-round clash in
Bloemfontein
24.06.2010

Matthew Upson believes he can emulate the achievement of fellow Hammers
Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst by enjoying a FIFA World Cup
victory over Germany.
The revered trio were the star turns in England's unforgettable 4-2 final
win over West Germany at Wembley in July 1966. Forty-four years later, Upson
looks almost certain to line up against the Germans in Sunday afternoon's
mouth-watering second-round meeting at the Free State Stadium in
Mangaung/Bloemfontein after impressing in Wednesday's 1-0 Group C success
against Slovenia. While the Hammers captain is playing down the significance
of facing Joachim Low's side, he is itching to help England reach the
quarter-finals and take a step closer to matching the achievements of the
heroes of 1966. "To me it doesn't, personally [matter that England finished
second in Group C and missed out on a second-round meeting with Ghana and a
quarter-final meeting with either Uruguay or Korea Republic]," said Upson,
who was back in training at the Three Lions' Royal Bafokeng training base on
Thursday. "Some people say you need the best route to the final, which you
would agree with - you want to play as weak teams as you can. "But
eventually, you are going to have to beat the best teams and Sunday will be
a great opportunity for us to go into another situation where it is a
win-only opportunity. That doesn't bother me."
Upson had been issued with a watching brief as Ledley King and Jamie
Carragher partnered John Terry in England's opening two matches, but the
31-year-old settled quickly into what was his first World Cup match. An
assured display was capped by a fine lunging tackle on substitute Tim Matavz
to deny Slovenia the late equaliser that would have put England out of the
competition. "It was kind of straight into the cauldron, really and
difficult circumstances in a way, but in others it was an opportunity to
shine and to step up.
"I was pleased with the way things went and I thought we thoroughly deserved
the win."

*West Ham United midfielder Valon Behrami will miss Switzerland's final
Group H fixture against Honduras on Friday evening through suspension after
being sent off in the 1-0 defeat by Chile on Monday. Should Switzerland win,
they will qualify for the last 16 for the second consecutive FIFA World Cup
finals and are likely to face either Brazil or Portugal in the second round.

All set for SBOBET Cup
WHUFC.com
The club's principal partners SBOBET have backed the home pre-season
friendly in aid of the Academy
24.06.2010

West Ham United are delighted to confirm the glamour pre-season friendly
against RC Deportivo La Coruna will be played for the SBOBET Cup in aid of
the Academy. The Hammers will play host to the former Spanish champions and
UEFA Champions League semi-finalists at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday 7
August - a week before the start of the new Barclays Premier League season.
The club's principal partners SBOBET first joined forces with the club in
December 2008 and the relationship has gone from strength to strength,
making them an obvious choice to sponsor the prestigious Deportivo fixture.
SBOBET also have close links with the club's renowned youth system, backing
the special award given to Tony Carr at May's gala dinner. SBOBET and the
club continue to have the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research logo featured
on all the Academy kit and children's replica shirts. The club will also
again designate a Barclays Premier League home match as an awareness game
for the Fund and work with other good causes across the community throughout
the season. The online sports bookmakers also sponsor the whufc.com player
of the month award and, last December, SBOBET gave a commemorative Bobby
Moore Fund scarf to fans who attended the home match with Manchester United.
West Ham United Chairman David Sullivan said: "I am very excited by the
prospect of the new season and the match against Deportivo La Coruna will be
the ideal way to kick things off. It will be great to get the first look at
our new signings in action under Avram Grant and also to see a top Spanish
side at the Boleyn Ground. "I am very grateful to SBOBET for their continued
support, particularly the way they have endorsed our hugely successful
Academy and our close relationship with the fans. Our work at the club is
very much about building successful partnerships and SBOBET are continuing
to have a major role in helping us to move forward."
Bill Mummery, SBOBET Executive Director, said: "We are all looking forward
to the new season with great optimism and the SBOBET Cup against Deportivo
La Coruna will be the perfect match to get things started. As we move into a
new era for the club, SBOBET look forward to working together with West Ham
United to achieve all of the success it deserves. "The emphasis on
developing the Academy system is important to us as SBOBET has a firm
commitment to social responsibility and the communities in which we work.
From our first meeting with West Ham, it was clear just how strong the bond
was between the club and the supporters and we are delighted to play our
part."
The confirmation of the Deportivo match has focused minds on the start of
the new season and Scott Parker, the reigning Hammer of the Year, is looking
forward to renewing old acquaintances. While many West Ham players will be
treading new ground, Parker faced Deportivo in the UEFA Intertoto Cup
semi-finals in the summer of 2005. After missing the first leg in Spain, the
29-year-old was in the lineup for the return match at St James' Park, but
could not prevent his side falling to a 2-1 loss and a 4-2 aggregate defeat.
Five years later, the Hammer of the Year will get another crack at the
Galicians, whose squad will feature three members of their 2005 squad in
Manuel Pablo, Sergio and Juan Carlos Valeron. "Deportivo are a good club
with good players and I am sure they will bring a very useful team to play
against us," Parker said. "It will be a tough game, as it is whenever you
come up with a top team from a country like Spain. They will be very good
technically and will keep the ball well, so it is going to be a good workout
for us a week ahead of the start of the new season. "A game like this one
will let us know exactly where we are at that stage and also tell us what we
need to improve on to be ready for the Premier League."

Tickets for the eagerly-awaited friendly are selling well, with advance
adult prices starting as low as £10 for season ticket holders, £13 for
Academy members and £16 for non-members. All under-16 tickets priced at just
£5.

Moore Cup dumped
KUMB.com
Filed: Thursday, 24th June 2010
By: Staff Writer

The Bobby Moore Cup had been dumped in favour of the SBOBET Cup. The
newly-introduced SBOBET Cup will be the reward for the winners of this
season's Boleyn Ground prestige pre-season friendly, which sees the Hammers
pitched against La Liga outfit Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, 7th August.
The trophy effectively replaces the Bobby Moore Cup, which has been played
for in the last two pre-seasons. In 2008 the trophy was shared between the
Hammers and Villareal following a 1-1 draw - goals coming from Carlton Cole
and Santi Cazorla - before Napoli stole a 1-0 win courtesy of a a late Fabio
Quagliarella header last season. David Sullivan, West Ham's joint Chairman
told whufc.com: "I am very grateful to SBOBET for their continued support.
Our work at the club is very much about building successful partnerships and
SBOBET are continuing to have a major role in helping us to move forward. "I
am very excited by the prospect of the new season and the match against
Deportivo La Coruna will be the ideal way to kick things off. It will be
great to get the first look at our new signings in action under Avram Grant
and also to see a top Spanish side at the Boleyn Ground."

* The Bobby Moore Cup was resurrected in 2008 to tie in with the decision to
permanently retire Moore's number six shirt.

World Cup 2010: Rift rumours helped England bond, says Matthew Upson
Upson says England team are united
Defender eager to face Germany
guardian.co.uk, Thursday 24 June 2010 14.09 BST

Matthew Upson believes the rumour and speculation surrounding the England
camp in recent days has served to strengthen the team's resolve. England's
1-0 victory over Slovenia came after John Terry sparked talk of rifts within
the camp with his comments in the wake of disappointing performances in the
opening two games. However, there was no obvious lack of unity after the
final whistle when the manager, Fabio Capello, joined his players in their
celebrations. Upson told BBC Radio 5 Live: "You can use all those things and
use all the rumours and all the accusations as fuel to improve and succeed
and get tighter together. "That's something we have improved on as a team
and I think we can still get better at it, as we can in a lot of other
areas. "It's the key to winning, for me. Forget everything else, tactics,
the lot – it is about you as human beings and people and what you are
willing to commit and your attitude, and I thought we did that really well."
England's joy was partially tempered by the news of the USA's late winner
against the Algerians in Pretoria, a goal which led to them topping the
group and pitch Capello's side against Germany in Bloemfontein on Sunday.
But when asked if it mattered his side had not won the group, Upson replied:
"To me it doesn't, personally. "Some people say you need the best route to
the final, which you would agree with – you want to play as weak teams as
you can. "But eventually, you are going to have to beat the best teams and
Sunday will be a great opportunity for us to go into another situation where
it is a win-only opportunity. That doesn't bother me."
Upson, of course, was in the team because of Ledley King's persisting
fitness problems and Jamie Carragher's suspension, and he knows he may have
a fight on his hands to line up against the Germans. Whether he makes it or
not, the 31-year-old will be able to reflect back upon an eventful World Cup
finals debut, which saw him make a nervous start, but grow into his role.
Indeed, he contributed a vital late block to preserve England's clean sheet
as Slovenia made a final desperate push. "It was just an opportunity to win
the ball. It had been flicked on and knocked down inside of me, and it's a
reaction more than anything," he said. "You don't think, you just see it and
you make the play for it. I got there, thankfully, and we saw it through.
"It was straight into the cauldron, really, and difficult circumstances in a
way, but in others it was an opportunity to shine . "I was pleased with the
way things went and I thought we thoroughly deserved the win."

West Ham scared off Ben Haim by wage demands
ESPN Soccernet staff
June 24, 2010

est Ham United boss Avram Grant wants to take Tal Ben Haim with him to Upton
Park - but the Hammers are unwilling to match his £45,000-a-week salary or
pay a £1 million fee demanded by his agent. Although the experienced Ben
Haim can leave on a free transfer due to Portsmouth's relegation, which
triggered an escape clause, it emphasises the problems the south-coast club
have in trimming their wage bill. The Israel international still has two
years to run on his deal at Fratton Park so is unlikely to walk out on the
club for vastly reduced wages. A source at West Ham told Soccernet: "Yes, we
would love to sign the player, but not at the moment as his wages are
£45,000-a-week and his agent wants a £1 million fee - both too high. "The
problem is he has two years left on his Portsmouth contract, though he can
leave for nothing as they were relegated. "Why should he leave unless he
gets the same wage? But a club like West Ham can no longer afford to pay
every player £40-45,000-a-week. Clubs like West Ham have to draw the line
somewhere or every club will go broke." The Hammers might make one exception
this summer in the area of big wages if they can capture a marquee signing
and have been linked with a procession of stellar names, including David
Beckham, Joe Cole, Juan Roman Riquelme and Thierry Henry.
