Jimenez excites Gale
WHUFC.com
Tony Gale is looking forward to seeing Chile forward Luis Jimenez in action
for West Ham United
10.07.2009

Tony Gale is hoping Luis Jimenez can thrill West Ham United's fans in the
same way fellow South American Carlos Tevez did three seasons ago. Argentina
forward Tevez became a cult hero during the 2006/07 campaign, ending the
season by being voted Hammer of the Year. Fast forward to 2009/10 and West
Ham have brought in another exciting prospect in Chile forward Jimenez, who
has joined the Hammers on a season-long loan from Italian champions
Internazionale. While Gale does not want to place any unwanted pressure on
the 25-year-old, he believes Jimenez could prove to be a shrewd capture for
manager Gianfranco Zola. "It's important for the fans to have new signings
to look and Luis Jimenez is certainly one of them," said Gale. "From all the
sources that I've spoken to at Sky and at the club, he's an excellent
player. "He can play up-front, in the hole or in any of the roles in
midfield that Gianfranco and Steve Clarke want to play him. He will be a
very good signing. "Tevez was excellent when he was here and he will always
be a hero at Upton Park, especially when you consider he was only here for a
short space of time. He didn't even play a full season, and was only a
regular in the run-in. "It was a joy watching Carlos when he was at his
best."
While Jimenez is a welcome addition, Gale is also pleased to see a number of
the club's injured players returning to action. Wales defender Danny
Gabbidon is back after 18 months on the sidelines, while England midfielder
Kieron Dyer is in full training after missing the tail-end of last season
with a hamstring strain. Both could feature in Saturday's opening pre-season
friendly at Grays Athletic - a fixture being attended by Gale and fellow
ex-Hammers Tony Cottee, Alan Devonshire, Steve Lomas and Don Hutchison, as
well as new Grays chairman John Moncur. "There will be more [new signings],
there's no doubt about that, but I'm also excited about seeing some of the
injured players coming back - Danny Gabbidon and Kieron Dyer - because they
are class players who will add to what is a very good squad," said Gale.
"I'm really hopeful ahead of the new season and Jimenez makes it even
better, and there will be some more coming. The likes of Savio, who needed a
bit of bedding in and acclimatisation to living in a different country, I
believe we could see more from next season."

Sir Trevor honoured
WHUFC.com
Sir Trevor Brooking is to be inducted into the National Football Museum Hall
of Fame
09.07.2009

West Ham United legend Sir Trevor Brooking is to be inducted into the
National Football Museum Hall of Fame. Brooking famously scored the Hammers'
winning goal in the 1980 FA Cup final, making a total of 635 first-team
appearances for the only professional club he represented during a
glittering 19-year career. The former England midfielder, now 60, was
delighted to be honoured alongside 1966 FIFA World Cup winner George Cohen,
former Hammers and England forward Teddy Sheringham, Arsenal legends Cliff
Bastin and Frank McLintock, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ossie Ardiles,
Sunderland great Len Shackleton and Arsenal and England Ladies star Marianne
Spacey.
The eight inductees join such luminaries of the game as World Cup heroes Sir
Geoff Hurst, Bobby Moore OBE and Martin Peters, as well as former Hammer
Jimmy Greaves, Manchester United greats George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton
and West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola. "It was a wonderful surprise and great
honour to hear I have been voted into the National Football Museum Hall of
Fame," said Sir Trevor. "To be selected by a panel led by my heroes Sir
Bobby Charlton and Sir Tom Finney is very special. I am particularly
delighted to be joining my West Ham team-mates Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst
and Martin Peters along with England team-mate Kevin Keegan in the Hall of
Fame."
Brooking was chosen to be inducted by a special panel including Sir Alex
Ferguson, Gary Lineker and Professional Footballers Association Chief
Executive Gordon Taylor. He will be honoured at a special ceremony in
central London in September. A true 'one-club man', Brooking signed for West
Ham United as an apprentice in July 1965, playing his final first-team game
in May 1984. A modern midfield player, Brooking was born in Barking on 2
October 1948, growing up as a West Ham supporter and joining the club
straight from Ilford County High School. An England Youth international, he
made his senior debut for the Hammers in a 3-3 Division One draw at Burnley
on 29 August 1967. Brooking's most famous moment in a West Ham shirt came on
10 May 1980, when he stooped to head the only goal of the game as Arsenal
were beaten 1-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley. The winner would earn
Brooking a second winner's medal following the Hammers' victory over Fulham
in 1975. At international level, Brooking won 47 caps for England, scoring
five goals and appearing at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Following his
retirement, Brooking joined the BBC as a pundit before returning to the
Boleyn Ground in 2003 as caretaker manager, losing just one of his 14
matches in charge. Away from West Ham, Brooking has become an important
figure in sports administration, chairing the Eastern Region Council for
Sport and Recreation and later Sport England. In December 2003, he was
appointed as the Football Association's Director of Football Development.
The following year, 2004, he was knighted for his services to sport.

Sponsored by the PFA, North West Regional Development Agency and New
Football Pools, the National Football Hall of Fame is situated at Deepdale,
the home of Preston North End.

Davis explains change of heart

Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis has been explaining the reasons behind
his decision to reject the opportunity to move to West Ham. The 32-year-old
Saints skipper had looked like moving to London where he would have
effectively replaced Jan Lastukva as Rob Green's understudy, after he agreed
terms with United. However a late change of circumstances at the League One
club - the takeover led by Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr giving the
cash-stricken club a vital injection of funds. "The decision for me was
between the opportunity of first-team football at Southampton or the chance
to play Premier League football and I have made my choice to stay at
Southampton," explained Davis. "After speaking to Gianfranco Zola and Ludek
Miklosko at West Ham, they were both very understanding of my position and I
hold them both with the utmost respect. "I got the call yesterday and the
new people at Southampton were quick to offer me a new contract and were
very clear in what they want to achieve for the football club. "I always
said from the end of last season that League One football does not scare me
and I obviously feel as responsible as anyone for the club's position."
Davis, who had spent a couple of days at Chadwell Heath training with the
Hammers is set to retain the captaincy that he would have relinquished had
he moved to London.
As a result of Davis' about-turn West Ham will now consider fast-tracking
either Marek Stech or new signing Peter Kurucz to understudy Rob Green, who
has not missed a Premier League game in over two seasons.

Bye bye Bajner

Balint Bajner has returned to Hungary having failed to impress at West Ham.
The 18-year-old striker, who began his career with FC Sopron before joining
Liberty moved to London last July as one of several young foreign imports
and went on to score a number of goals for Tony Carr's youth team, including
a brace against Crystal Palace back in March. However the youngster was
deemed not to have done enough to earn a further year at the Academy and has
already returned home to parent club Liberty Oradea; something confirmed by
Carr who told whufc.com: "Balint's loan period ended at the end of last
season and we decided not to take that further. We wish him well in the
future."
West Ham appeared to have achieved something of a coup by landing Bajner,
who was interesting a number of Italian clubs at the time. At the time of
his signing, the Hungarian under-19 international said: "I was on trial at
Lazio and Inter Milan but I had the chance to go to West Ham. The atmosphere
and conditions were great at all the places, but English football had the
biggest affect on me."
However having failed to impress in East London, it's back to square one for
Bajner.

West Ham have announced the signing of young centre half Jack Lampe.
17-year-old Lampe becomes the latest youngster to be drafted into the Tony
Carr's Academy after signing a 12-month pro contract with the Hammers. The
Cheshunt-born defender - who signs from Ryman League outfit Harlow Town
having impressed during a recent trial - told whufc.com: "Joining West Ham
is a dream come true. I've always wanted to be in an Academy playing with
good players and to a good standard. "Now, I hope to become a regular in the
reserves this season and earn another contract. I can't wait to start
working at West Ham. The move has come about quite quickly and I can't wait
to get going."
Academy boss Carr added: "Jack impressed during a trial period during the
end of last season and we decided to offer him a contract. "We hope to
develop him further to see how far his talent could take him. He looked
composed and as if he had played at that level before and we felt it was
worth giving him a season to see what he can do."
Lampe will now challenge the likes of Bondz N'Gala and Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson
for a spot in Alex Dyer's reserve side next season.

Quashie cools Cardiff link
Midfielder only focused on securing regular playing time
By Chris Galea Last updated: 10th July 2009

West Ham United midfielder Nigel Quashie insists he has not received an
approach from Championship outfit Cardiff City. The former Scotland
international has struggled with injury in recent years after breaking his
foot against Tottenham in March 2007, but he made a return to football last
season with successful loan spells at both Birmingham and Wolves. The
30-year-old has one year left on his current deal at Upton Park and he told
skysports.com that he does not mind where his future lies as long as he is
given the chance to play regular football. He said: "I've not been
concerning myself with those stories really because I'm focused on getting a
good pre-season under my belt, but I have heard the speculation flying
around about that. "All I want to do is play football really, whether that
is at West Ham or if something materialises at either Cardiff or another
club then it will be good for me to get back to giving 100 per cent on the
pitch for a football club again. "West Ham have been great with me whilst
I've been on the sidelines and it will obviously be up to them whether I
remain at Upton Park or not."
The former Southampton and Nottingham Forest man has begun pre-season
training with the Hammers and, following his injury nightmare, is keen to
play as long as his body allows him to. He added: "Last season was all about
getting fit again really and the loan spells I had with both Birmingham City
and Wolves helped me to do that.
"That worked well for me, but I'm back at West Ham now and starting to get
back into the thick of things with the boys. "I've got another year left on
my deal here and it's all about my desire to play regularly now really
because I need to be playing. "I've been playing for 14 years now and I'm
approaching the age of 31, so I need to be playing regularly. "If I need to
go out on loan again to do so, or even move somewhere permanently then so be
it because the main thing for me is to be playing football."

Pulis puts Ashton hunt on hold
Potters boss in market for a new striker
Last updated: 9th July 2009

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis admits following up an enquiry for West Ham
United striker Dean Ashton is currently at the 'back of his mind'. Potters
chairman Peter Coates revealed last month that former Crewe forward Ashton
was among Pulis' summer transfer targets. Pulis confirmed he has shown an
interest in Ashton, who has struggled with injuries during the past two
seasons. However, he admits that he has been enquiring about a host of
players as he seeks the right signings to add to his squad for the new
campaign. "It's one of many enquiries we've made," Pulis told Sky Sports
News. "I think the situation is the same with most clubs. You enquire about
what's out there and what's not, and then you take a view, and we've taken a
view on about 15 players. "You just wait and see what comes up and what
doesn't come up. It changes every day. "Other clubs go out and buy players,
and certain players then become available and certain players drop off the
radar for all sorts of reasons - whether they are too expensive, whether you
are worried about them settling into your football club and whether the
value of the player is too much for what you can afford and what you can do.
"There's all different situations that you come across and you have to make
sure the players are right for your football club."
Expanding on Ashton, he added: "We've made an enquiry and I think, at the
moment, that's at the back of our minds as there are other things going on
that are more relevant and that could happen a lot quicker."
Benjani Mwaruwari is another forward to have been linked with a move to the
Britannia Stadium, but Pulis did not confirm any interest in the Manchester
City man. He said: "You can ask about 15, 16 players that we've spoken to
other clubs about or we've enquired about."

Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Hull set for major cash boost
10 July 2009 | By Adam Fraser | SportsProMedia.com

Three English soccer clubs are set for a lucrative pre-season as tickets go
on sale for the Barclays Asia Cup. Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Hull City
will travel to China to compete in the tournament. With each ticket for the
four-team, two-day competition in Beijing priced at US$55, the event can
expect to make almost US$3 million in basic ticketing revenue, guaranteeing
significant appearance fees for the three Premier League clubs and their
hosts, Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan. The three clubs'
participation in the competition, held as part of the Beijing International
Football Festival, has been hailed by the director of the Beijing Football
Association as a chance to make Beijing "the capital of Asian football".
Spurs, meanwhile, will receive another pre-season cash injection due to
their participation in the Wembley Cup, which will also feature Scottish
giants Celtic, European champions Barcelona and Egyptian club Al Ahly.

The competitions are more evidence of an increasing trend that has seen
pre-season matches, formerly used merely as training exercises to boost
players' fitness ahead of the new season, develop into lucrative commercial
exhibitions. Spurs' fierce local rivals, Arsenal, host the Emirates Cup,
which will see Paris St Germain, Rangers and Atletico Madrid visit north
London in August. Premier League champions Manchester United, meanwhile,
will travel to Germany, where Bayern Munich will also welcome Boca Juniors
and AC Milan in the Audi Cup.

Spurs to fail in Joe Cole bid
Thursday, July 9, 2009

Joe Cole is set to sign a new deal with Chelsea - ending Tottenham Hotspur's
audacious bid for the midfielder. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp - who managed
Cole at West Ham - had been hopeful of luring the player to White Hart Lane,
reports today's Evening Standard. Redknapp had been hoping to tempt Cole
with the promise of guaranteed first-team football and the key role in the
Spurs midfield. Redknapp's hopes were raised when Cole was told by Chelsea
to wait until this summer for contract extension talks, even though his deal
runs out next year. But the Blues are ready to offer Cole a new four-year
deal. Cole missed much of last season with a knee injury but has been taking
part in pre-season training, yet is unlikely to be fully fit for the start

BLUES' new signing Lee Bowyer said he felt comfortable in his Blues

so nice to me when I was here," the Londoner said, outlining his reasons for
opting for Alex McLeish's outfit. "The club has gone into the Premier
League, which is where I want to play, and it's a new challenge for myself.
"Birmingham are moving in the right direction. Everybody I came across, they
were driving to be in the Premier League. "Yes, there was interest

welcome and it's not too far from home, so everything seemed right. "The
manager and players were really good to me, so were the fans. It was all
nice, and it helps when you know people like you." "I thought that we did

ligament surgery in March. He took time out from his rehab schedule to give
an extended interview to WHUTV.

The 25-year-old has taken a "big step forward" by running again as part of
his intensive training programme, which included one-on-one work with a club
physiotherapist while away on holiday.

Injured since twisting his knee in the 1-0 victory against Manchester City
on Sunday 1 March, Behrami has high hopes of being back sooner rather than
later.

He is eager to repay the club's faith in him. The hugely popular Switzerland
midfielder joined a year ago this month from Serie A giants Lazio and said
the last 12 months had made a significant impact on his professional and
personal life.

"I am settled here, it happened very quickly," he said in an exclusive
extended interview with WHUTV. "Apart from the injury, this last year was
very positive for me and for my life in general. It has been fantastic. It
is strange because one year ago was so different. When you don't know the
people it is not so easy.

"Now I feel better. Also, apart from the football, outside I know the city
and there is a fantastic atmosphere. It is very nice to meet the supporters.
For me it is a great incentive for me to work hard, every time I meet them I
feel that [support]. Being injured, it is great to feel important to the
supporters."

Behrami, who is hoping for a third major finals appearance at the end of
next season after the 2010 FIFA World Cup, following his involvement at the
2006 edition and UEFA Euro 2008, added: "It is good to be back. When you
feel part of a team, every time you return it is a pleasure. It is very
important for a football player. If you go to work and you are not very
comfortable it is not easy, but here everybody is happy."

Hammers sign Lampe
WHUFC.com
Central defender Jack Lampe is the sixth teenager to sign professional terms
this summer
08.07.2009

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of central defender
Jack Lampe.

The 17-year-old has joined the Hammers on a one-year professional contract
after impressing Academy Director Tony Carr during a trial.

The teenager becomes the sixth player to sign their first professional deal
this summer, following Academy graduates Matt Fry, Tony Brookes, Oliver Lee,
Daniel Kearns and Anthony Edgar.

Lampe has moved to the Boleyn Ground from Ryman League club Harlow Town,
where he was a regular in the reserve and youth teams last season. He also
made four first-team appearances in 2008/09 and was an unused substitute in
the club's FA Cup first-round defeat by League Two outfit Macclesfield Town.

"Joining West Ham is massive for me," said Lampe, who admires former Hammers
defender Rio Ferdinand and John Terry. "It's just a dream come true. I've
always wanted to be in an Academy playing with good players and to a good
standard.

Born and raised in Cheshunt, Lampe spent a short period on trial at Little
Heath last season after being recommended to Carr by Harlow coach Colin
Williams.

The teenager trained with the club's Under-18s and appeared in the 2-0 FA
Premier Academy League victory over Fulham in April. After being introduced
as a 56t- minute substitute, Lampe set up a goal for Cristian Montano before
coming close to scoring himself with a fierce volley.

"I thought I did really well against Fulham," said Lampe. "I nearly scored
with a volley and I got an assist when I set up Cristian, so I was pleased.

"Now, I hope to become a regular in the reserves this season and earn
another contract. I can't wait to start working at West Ham now. The move
has come about quite quickly and I can't wait to get going."

The 6'2 teenager is also hoping to follow in the footsteps of his
grandfather and fellow central defender Derek Lampe, an England youth
international who played nearly 100 First Division matches for Fulham in the
1950s and 1960s.

"My granddad was a central defender just like me so I'd love to emulate
him," said Lampe. "He came and watched me against in the trial game against
Fulham and he said I did well. He would just like to see me do well and
succeed.

"Having a grandfather who played at the highest level is definitely an
inspiration to me and it has really spurred me on. I'd love to be able to
achieve what he did."

Academy Director Carr said he had been excited by Lampe's composure and
potential.

"Jack impressed during a trial period during the end of last season and we
decided to offer him a contract," said Carr. "We hope to develop him further
to see how far his talent could take him. He looked composed and as if he
had played at that level before and we felt it was worth giving him a season
to see what he can do."

Meanwhile, Carr confirmed that Hungarian forward Balint Bajner had returned
to his club Liberty Oradea after a year in the Under-18 set-up. "Balint's
loan period ended at the end of last season and we decided not to take that
further," he said. "We wish him well in the future."

Saints' Davis set to join Hammers

Southampton captain and goalkeeper Kelvin Davis is set to join West Ham, BBC
Radio Solent understands. The 32-year-old, who was player of the year for
the south-coast outfit last season, had a medical on Friday. Davis leaves
the Saints as they are on the verge of a takeover by the Swiss Markus
Liebherr after months of uncertainty over the club's future. Former England
Under-21 international Davis is expected to provide cover at Upton Park for
Robert Green. The ex-Ipswich and Sunderland star was keen to stay with the
League One club even though his contract at Saints had expired. But it seems
the uncertainty over Southampton's future, after the failed takeover by the
Matt Le Tissier-led Pinnacle group, may have forced him to seek work
elsewhere.

Bowyer completes Blues move

Birmingham have confirmed that they have signed Lee Bowyer from West Ham on
a two-year deal. Blues manager Alex McLeish was keen to tie the deal up by
the time the players reported back for pre-season on Wednesday and that has
proved to have been the case. The 32-year-old spent the second half of last
season on loan at St Andrews and was instrumental in the club securing
automatic promotion from the Championship. McLeish has already strengthened
considerably in his defence and strike-force, to the tune of more than
£15million, and has now set his sights on improving the midfield department.
Bowyer is the Blues' seventh signing of the summer.

Lee Bowyer completes move to Birmingham City
Times Online

Birmingham City have completed the signing of Lee Bowyer, the West Ham
United midfielder, on a two-year contract. Bowyer became out of contract at
Upton Park on July 1 and has made the switch to St Andrews after an
impressive loan spell during the second half of last season. He has put pen
to paper on a deal which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2011.
Bowyer has experienced a fair share of controversy throughout his career but
played a major role in helping City regain their Premier League status at
the first attempt. The former England international made 17 appearances for
manager Alex McLeish's side, scoring his only goal on his debut against
Cardiff City in January. The 32-year-old began his career at Charlton
Athletic before moving to Leeds United in 1996 for a fee of £2.8million - a
then record transfer for a British teenager. He joined West Ham in 2003 but
moved to Newcastle United after six months, only to return to Upton Park
three years later. Bowyer is Birmingham's seventh signing of the summer
after Stephen Carr, Scott Dann, Roger Johnson, on-loan Joe Hart, Giovanny
Espinoza and record capture Christian Benitez.

Ex-Everton & West Ham Winger Mark Ward Reflects On Prison Sentence
Mark Ward hopes that young players today can learn from his past mistakes...
8 Jul 2009 21:17:35

Having spent four years in prison, former Premier League favourite Mark Ward
has looked back on his time behind bars. Ward, who spent most of his
footballing career in the English top-flight with teams such as Everton and
West Ham United, was found guilty of possessing cocaine with intent to
supply. Living life as a free man, the retired winger is adamant now that
has changed for the better. "I know that what I was involved in was evil,"
Ward told Sportsmail. "It is something I have to live with for the rest of
my life. "I'm not proud of the fact I was involved in the distribution of
drugs. I've seen the devastation it does to people. People have lost family
and close ones to drugs."
Now 46 years old, Ward spoke of his refusal to name names at his trial,
which would have resulted in a reduced sentence on the inside. "As a Huyton
boy, I was brought up not to grass on others. I held my hands up," he went
on. "To go further would have been to put my daughter and grandchildren and
others close to me in trouble. I was never going to do that. These people
can be very nasty."
Some of Ward's former team-mates chipped in to buy him a car, but Ward is
unsure of the colour. "It's bloody red," the Everton blue joked. "And the
MOT is due!" Ward concluded with his statement of intent for the future. "I
have to make sure that something positive comes out of the past four years,"
he said. "I have direction now that I never had before. I plan to do some
charity work and maybe something through the PFA. I doubt if there is anyone
more qualified than me to go round young footballers and make sure they
don't repeat my mistakes. "Of course, I have regrets. Many. But I'm not
going to lie down and die."

Cole ready to roar
WHUFC.com
England striker Carlton Cole is feeling at home and ready to hit new heights
in the new season
06.07.2009

A confident Carlton Cole is feeling at home at West Ham United and ready to
fire in 2009/10.

The England forward was in superb form last season, scoring 12 goals and
becoming an integral part of Gianfranco Zola's team.

After coming through the ranks at Chelsea - where he was part of Hammers
first-team coach Steve Clarke's youth team - Cole spent time on loan at
Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chartton Athletic and Aston Villa before joining
West Ham on a permanent basis three years ago this week in 2006.

Having recently become a father for the first time, Cole is settled both at
home and at work. "I've just had a baby and that was a massive wake up call
for me to start taking my football seriously. The manager came in at the
right time to help me take it to the next level.

"On loan you are never really going to settle. It works for some players but
I'm a home boy and I need to not be on the road or in a hotel. For you to
get the best out of me I've got to be settled. That was one of the reasons I
wasn't progressing as fast as I wanted to. I was playing England Under-21
football and I was doing well for the Under-21s and I was settled there but
at club level I wasn't.

"I'm just happy I've found my home now and West Ham has done a lot for me."

The 25-year-old admitted the arrival of Zola and Clarke in September had
given him a huge confidence boost.

Cole turned that confidence into a string of impressive performances,
earning him his first two England caps earlier this year. He is aiming to
take his game to even greater heights when he returns to training at
Chadwell Heath with his fellow internationals this weekend.

"They've brought a lot of confidence to the team," said Cole. "It's
brilliant. It reminds me of playing in the youth club under Steve at
Chelsea, where I used to score week-in, week-out. I think I scored 38 or 39
goals in all and I think I've got the record there still.

"It was just a great year for me that year and I'd like to think those years
are coming back now. I'm getting used to scoring and keeping my performance
at a high level consistently. You have to be consistent about your football
and not have a good game one week and then a bad one the next. You need to
get out there and get that form and consistency regularly."

The powerful striker believes the managerial influence of Zola and Clarke
has also rubbed off on his young team-mates, with the likes of James Tomkins
and Junior Stanislas establishing themselves in the first team last term.

"We've got a lot of youth players coming through," said Cole. "James
Tomkins, Junior Stanislas and Freddie Sears broke through last year, while
Zavon Hines and Bondz N'Gala also broke through [into the first-team squad]
. So you've got good, young players trying to break through to the first
team that will push the players that are already there and established to
kick on more or else the kids are going to take their places.

"This is the confidence that the manager has bought to the young players as
well, to get them to believe in themselves to get to the right level of
playing."

Zola - Pre-season is crucial
Hammers boss pleased to be back in action
Last updated: 7th July 2009

Gianfranco Zola is well aware that West Ham cannot afford to waste
pre-season training if they want to improve on last season. The Hammers
narrowly missed out on a place in the maiden Europa League after finishing
two spots and a couple of points behind seventh-placed Fulham in the Premier
League last term. It is expected that the Upton Park outfit will be keen to
improve in 2009/10 and will aim to secure a place in Europe, and Zola is
determined to make pre-season count in order to improve the probability of
meeting that target. The Italian - who took over as boss from Alan
Curbishley last September, missing the vital preparation time before the
campaign - is well aware of the benefits that a training camp in Austria and
participation in the Asia Trophy could bring. West Ham appeared to run out
of legs in the closing stretch of 2008/09, losing two of their last three
league games and conceding six goals in the defeats, and Zola believes
positive pre-season training can have long-term impacts.
He told WHUTV: "I had a very, very good rest and like everybody else, I
recharged my batteries to start the new season. "This is the most crucial
time of the year. "We need to make sure we work well because it will have a
lot of benefits in the future." Zola added: "It feels very good to be back.
We are here very much willing and ready to start this new season. "We have a
lot of enthusiasm and are looking forward to getting started." West Ham
begin their Premier League campaign at newly-promoted Wolves on 15th August.

The boys are back in town

It doesn't seem that long since the end of last season, but Gianfranco Zola
and his squad are now back in training ahead of the 2009/2010 Premier League
campaign.
The West Ham manager has been giving his early thoughts on proceedings as
well by saying that there is a definite feel good factor around the place.
It was a relatively successful season last year in terms of league position,
but the belief seems to be that this can be bettered. Speaking ahead of a
week that will contain a large amount of fitness tests, medical checks and
training sessions, Zola said that 'it feels very good to be back'. The
Italian loves his football after all and probably didn't know what to do
with himself during the close season. The West Ham boss reiterated the
positive feeling around the camp by saying that everyone has a 'lot of
enthusiasm' and is 'looking forward to getting started' in around six weeks'
time. Zola knows the importance of this stage of the campaign as well. He
says that the build up to the new campaign is the 'most crucial time of the
year'. It is the period of time where the players get themselves in the best
possible condition for the new season and where they make sure they do all
they can to help West Ham start positively. Not everyone is back for West
Ham though at this early stage. Robert Green, Matthew Upson, Carlton Cole,
Luis Boa Morte, James Tomkins, Mark Noble and Jonathan Spector all have a
few extra days off after their various international commitments. This means
that the real preparation can't begin quite yet. With a number of key
players missing from training, tactics or game preparation cannot be
discussed quite yet and it is more about the fitness of the players.
The members of the squad that are in training have a chance to get
themselves a head start in terms of fitness though. Some of them may only be
on the fringes of the team at the moment, but a strong pre-season could
alert Zola of their presence a bit more and they may get their chance to
impress. There may be changes to the squad between now and August though and
this could disrupt some of the preparations. In an ideal world, Zola would
have made all the signings he was going to make by now and all the players
that were going to leave would have left. Unfortunately though, this is
unrealistic to say the least. However, it seems a safe football bet that the
sooner the squad is settled and ready for battle, the better. This is why
Lucas Neill's future needs to be sorted for example. Just to settle everyone
down a bit. Then, any new signings need to be brought in as soon as
possible. The more pre-season games they have for West Ham, the more they
are likely to hit the ground running come August.
Whatever happens though, you just know that Zola is going to be positive. He
will make sure his players are in good spirits throughout pre-season and
that they are fully prepared for the challenges ahead.

Keeper Kelvin Davis set to sign for West Ham

Goalkeeper Kelvin Davis is expected to sign for West Ham by the end of the
week. The 32-year-old is training with the Hammers after his deal at
Southampton expired and will act as cover for Robert Green. One notable
absentee as the squad returned to training yesterday was full-back Lucas
Neill. There had been speculation that Neill, who had initially rejected a
new contract, had changed his mind and was ready to re-sign but Turkish club
Galatasaray are set to offer the Aussie a better deal.

Defender's agent claims West Ham wish to re-sign Australian

Lucas Neill is open to re-signing at West Ham United, according to the
defender's agent. Neill is currently without a club after his previous deal
at Upton Park expired at the end of June. Skysports.com recently revealed
talks are under way over the Australia international possibly returning to
the East London side. And Neill's representative, Paddy Dominguez, claims
Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola is keen to secure the full-back's services for
the new season. "Lucas is not going to accept any offer," Dominguez told The
World Game. "Lucas' heart is at West Ham and he knows that manager
Gianfranco Zola not only wants him at the club but also as captain. "So now
it is up to the West Ham administration to come up with an acceptable offer
for an extension of his contract. "We are not talking about a new contract
here but an extension, which would be easier for everybody concerned. We
should have something in about a week. "It has always been the preference of
Lucas that he wants to remain at West Ham. But it is up to the club
administration to execute that. "The ownership has changed a number of times

Saints' Davis set to join Hammers
BBC.co.uk

But it seems
the uncertainty over Southampton's future, after the failed takeover by the
Matt Le Tissier-led Pinnacle group, may have forced him to seek work
elsewhere.

McLeish thrilled by Bowyer capture
Wednesday, July 8, 2009
Metro.co.uk

Lee Bowyer is set to become Birmingham's seventh signing of the summer.
Bowyer is poised to join Blues from West Ham on a free transfer after a
successful loan spell at St Andrew's during the second half of last season.
Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has turned his attention to strengthening in
the centre of the park after bringing in new blood up front and in defence.
And he was impressed by the impact of Bowyer in helping to clinch City's
return to the Barclays Premier League at the first attempt. McLeish
confirmed: 'I don't know if the Is and Ts have been formally dotted and
crossed but Lee has pledged his allegiance to Birmingham. 'He will become a
permanent Birmingham player and a worthy addition to our squad. He did well
for us last season.'
Bowyer has been involved in his fair share of controversy during his career
but his experience would be invaluable in helping Birmingham's bid to become
established in the top flight. Stephen Carr, Scott Dann, Roger Johnson, Joe
Hart, Giovanny Espinoza and record signing Christian Benitez have all joined
Blues during the close season. And McLeish intimated he has been promised
further backing by the board. He said: 'I have several names in mind for the
crucial midfield positions. 'I know what I am looking for in the team and
the board have pledged their support to back me in this.'

Agent urges Irons to aid Lucas deal
TeamTalk

Lucas Neill is open to re-signing at Upton Park, according to the defender's
agent who says his client's "heart is at West Ham". Neill is currently
without a club after his previous deal at Upton Park expired at the end of
June. He recently revealed talks are under way over the Australia
international possibly returning to the East London side.
And Neill's representative, Paddy Dominguez, claims Hammers boss Gianfranco
Zola is keen to secure the full-back's services for the new season. "Lucas
is not going to accept any offer," Dominguez told The World Game. "Lucas'
heart is at West Ham and he knows that manager Gianfranco Zola not only
wants him at the club but also as captain. "So now it is up to the West Ham
administration to come up with an acceptable offer for an extension of his
contract. "We are not talking about a new contract here but an extension,
which would be easier for everybody concerned. We should have something in
about a week. "It has always been the preference of Lucas that he wants to
remain at West Ham. But it is up to the club administration to execute that.
"The ownership has changed a number of times since Lucas has been at the
club. Now it's different because they [the owners] are bankers. "We are
giving them every opportunity to reach agreement but there are other EPL and
continental clubs in the mix."

West Ham's Matthew Upson set for shirt number swap before season starts
West Ham central defender Matthew Upson is expected to switch shirt numbers
ahead of the new season.
Telegraph.co.uk
By John Ley
Published: 9:21AM BST 07 Jul 2009

Upson originally wore the famous number six shirt, previously in the
ownership of the great Bobby Moore, but the club decided to retire that
shirt a year ago in honour of the club's most celebrated player. Upson
switched to 15, but is expected to wear shirt number five for the coming
campaign. Last season, Walter Lopez wore number five, but given his
departure and that of several others, changes are expected. According to the
club's website, while shirt changes have yet to be confirmed, newcomer Luis
Jiminez is set to wear number 11, used last season by Matthew Etherington.
Jiminez was missing when the teams met up for the first day of pre-season
training with the striker finalising some personal matters following his
loan transfer from Inter Milan. Manager Gianfranco Zola has also allowed
several players who were on international duty in the summer to have extra
time off, with the whole squad re-uniting in Austria next week. Valon
Behrami, who suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury four months ago, was
back jogging while another long-term absentee, Scott Parker, was also back
in training following the groin problem that ended his season. Julien
Faubert, who spent a spell on loan at Real Madrid last season, was back at
the club's Essex training headquarters though he remains a target for clubs
in Germany.

Lucas Neill Won't Accept Reduced Terms From West Ham United - Agent
The Socceroos captain wants to stay at Upton Park but the Hammers are
unwilling to extend his contract on current terms.
7 Jul 2009 07:59:34
Goal.com

Lucas Neill will not accept a new offer from West Ham United, despite
wanting to remain at the club, according to his agent, Paddy Dominguez.
Speaking to The World Game, Dominguez said that the out-of-contract
centre-back would accept an extension of his deal as it currently stands but
isn't willing to negotiate reduced terms. "Lucas is not going to accept any
offer," said Dominguez. "Lucas's heart is at West Ham and he knows that
manager Gianfranco Zola not only wants him at the club but also as captain.
"So now it is up to the West Ham administration to come up with an
acceptable offer for an extension of his contract. "We are not talking about
a new contract here but an extension, which would be easier for everybody
concerned. We should have something in about a week." Neill is current out
of contract at Upton Park and has been linked with moves to Greek giants
Olympiakos, Championship outfit Newcastle United and most frequently,
Turkish giants Galatasaray, where Socceroos team-mate Harry Kewell has
resurrected his career after a frustrating spell with Liverpool. With his
agent now having effectively ruled out Newcastle after stating that his
player wouldn't reside in the Championship next season, it appears as though
Turkey will be the likely destination for Neill if West Ham do not match his
wage demands. According to his agent though, the 31 year-old is keen to
remain with the Hammers. "Lucas also loves the style of play Zola has
introduced at Upton Park." Dominguez said. "Zola knows the value Lucas
brings to the team as a player and as a captain, especially in the
dressing-room. "Manchester City can spend a $200 million on a new team but
they would always need a leader like Lucas in their ranks."

BOWYER POISED FOR BLUES DEAL
By John Curtis, Press Association Sport

Lee Bowyer is set to join Birmingham on a permanent basis from West Ham on a
free transfer. The former England midfielder enjoyed a successful loan spell
at St Andrew's during the second half of last season. He played a key role
in helping them gain promotion back to the Barclays Premier League at the
first attempt. And now City are confident the deal for Bowyer will be tied
up in time for when the players report back for pre-season training on
Wednesday. McLeish indicated Bowyer would be a worthwhile addition to the
squad if his wage demands were not too high. Birmingham have also reiterated
they are confident the deal for Ecuador striker Christian Benitez will also
finally go through. Benitez was set to join Blues for a club-record
£9million before his medical indicated a knee problem. City were keen to
renegotiate the deal and it appears that his club Santos Laguna are
receptive to the idea. Benitez, 23, currently recovering after shoulder
surgery, will sign a three-year deal.

THE NEW season is still more than a month away but boss Gianfranco Zola has
labelled this time the most vital period of all. West Ham players' are home
from holidays now and they have thrust right into preparations for the next
campaign by their manager. Zola said: "This is the most crucial time of the
year. We need to make sure we work well because it will have a lot of
benefits in the future. "It feels very good to be back, We are here very

everybody else, I recharged my batteries to start the new season" he said.
Meanwhile, Zola has been praised by two young players who got their big
break under him, last season. Twenty year-old James Tomkins said: "I really
enjoyed my run in the team. It's been brilliant. "I've got to push on and
keep improving and see where it goes from there."
Jack Collison, 20, has said he loves the way Zola has the team playing. "We
have been playing some really nice stuff but we want to carry that on and
improve individually and as a team in the new season" he said. "Everything
the manager has said since he has been here, he has lived up to and more."

Zola happy to be back
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola was in positive mood as his players returned for vital
pre-season training
06.07.2009

West Ham United have reported back for the first day of pre-season training
in high spirits with the manager summing up the feelgood factor in the camp.

Gianfranco Zola sported his usual broad smile as the players took to the
lush green Chadwell Heath pitches on a sunny summer's day. The manager and
his coaching staff were all in before 9am and ready to go for a busy week
that would see day-long programmes involving a range of fitness tests,
medical checks and a series of exacting training sessions.

"It feels very good to be back," Zola told WHUTV. "We are here very much
willing and ready to start this new season. We have a lot of enthusiasm and
are looking forward to getting started.

"I had a very, very good rest and like everybody else, I recharged my
batteries to start the new season. This is the most crucial time of the
year. We need to make sure we work well because it will have a lot of
benefits in the future."

England trio Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole, along with Luis
Boa Morte after his spell with Portugal, all have a few extra days off while
Under-21 duo James Tomkins and Mark Noble, along with Jonathan Spector -
after his five games at the FIFA Confederations Cup with the US - are due to
link up with the squad in Austria next week.

Luis Jimenez is yet to arrive at the club after his summer switch from
Internazionale, with the forward just finalising some personal matters.
Scott Parker, the new Hammer of the Year, was doing well as he returns to
full fitness following the groin injury that curtailed his involvement at
the end of last season, while Julien Faubert was back after his loan spell
at Real Madrid.

The early morning session saw Zola, Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen working with
the players with Academy director Tony Carr and reserve-team coach Alex Dyer
also getting involved. Fitness coach Antonio Pintus was also particularly
busy and Valon Behrami cut a welcome sight as he jogged around the pitches
four months after his cruciate knee ligament injury and is on track for a
return in August.

Although the club can not officially confirm the new squad numbers until the
start of the 2009/10 campaign, some changes look likely. Herita Ilunga is
due to switch from No3 to No23 - a number he previously wore during his
career in France - Matthew Upson is set to swap No15 for No5 and Jimenez is
likely to wear the No11 shirt.

Youngsters James Tomkins, Jack Collison and Junior Stanislas are all due to
move up the order at No24, No25 and No30 respectively. However, fans should
note that all squad numbers, including these, are subject to change until
confirmed with the Premier League prior to the big kick-off on Saturday 15
August.

Napoli tickets on sale
WHUFC.com
Tickets for the second annual Bobby Moore Cup fixture will go on sale on
Tuesday morning
06.07.2009

Tickets for the second annual Bobby Moore Cup fixture will go on sale to
season ticket holders on Tuesday 7 July from 9am.

West Ham United will take on Italian Serie A side SSC Napoli at the Boleyn
Ground on Saturday 8 August, with kick-off at 3pm.

The match will be the traditional curtain-raiser for the new season with
Gianfranco Zola sure to field a strong lineup just a week before the big
kick-off in the Barclays Premier League.

As was the case in last year's inaugural Bobby Moore Cup fixture against
Villarreal, the club will use the match to raise funds and awareness for the
main charity partner - the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK
(Registered Charity No. 1089464).

As such, £1 from the sale of every match ticket will go to the Fund to help
tackle bowel cancer. In addition, West Ham United will match each £1 raised
to double the total amount donated to the charity. This initiative follows
on from a number of events last season, which was the first year of the
formal three-year partnership agreement signed with the Fund.

The match will present the first chance for Hammers supporters to see the
club's summer signings - including Chile forward Luis Jimenez - in action on
home turf alongside favourites like Hammer of the Year Scott Parker, with
Roberto Donadoni's side expected to provide stern opposition.

Napoli are expected to parade their own stars in the shape of Slovakia
playmaker Marek Hamsik and Argentina striker Ezequiel Lavezzi, as well as
their new arrival, Italy striker Fabio Quagliarella.

Advanced prices for season ticket holders start at £10, with all under-16
tickets priced at £5.

Academy members will be able to purchase their tickets from 9am on Wednesday
15 July, with adult prices starting at £13. All Youth Academy tickets are
priced at £5.

A general sale will begin from 9am on Saturday 18 July, with adult tickets
priced from £16, senior citizen tickets available from £6.50 and all
under-16 tickets priced at £5.

Should any tickets remain, they will be available at the Boleyn Ground on
the day of the match at increased prices.

Last year's inaugural match ended in a 1-1 draw between West Ham and
Villarreal, with the Bobby Moore Cup being shared by both clubs.

Carlton Cole fired the Hammers ahead after just 53 seconds before Spain
winger Santi Cazorla levelled matters nine minutes before half-time.

The match also saw the memory of West Ham great Bobby Moore honoured with
the retirement of his No6 shirt. Matthew Upson wore the No6 during the first
half before presenting his shirt to Moore's wife Stephanie. The England
defender then wore the No15 after the interval.

Pre-season is under way
WHUFC.com
Ex-Hammers defender Tony Gale says pre-season training has changed since his
playing days
06.07.2009

Pre-season training has changed immeasurably since the days of the Boys of
86, according to former West Ham United defender Tony Gale.

West Ham's modern-day squad - including the welcome sight of a jogging Valon
Behrami - returned to Chadwell Heath on Monday to work under the watchful
eye of fitness coach Antonio Pintus.

Gale, who was a mainstay of the Hammers side that finished third in the
First Division table 23 years ago, used to get himself fit for the new
campaign by pounding the streets wearing a bin-liner.

Having taken it easy during his summer break, Gale admitted he would take
drastic measures to loose any excess weight before returning to Chadwell
Heath.

Nowadays, the preparation is more scientific, but the players' pre-season
work is still geared towards the same goal - ensuring they are in the best
possible shape come the big kick-off.

"Pre-season is all about hard work," said Gale, who made 368 first-team
appearances for the club. "I don't think it's as much hard work now as it
was when I was playing because the boys look after themselves a lot more
during their break. However, they don't get as long a break as we did.

"I used to look forward to my breaks but I do remember, about two weeks
before coming back, the bin liners used to go on and I'd be running around
the streets trying to lose weight and get back for pre-season training."

Gale also pointed out that today's players are given their own specific
fitness regimes to follow, rather than the 'all-for-one' mentality that
predominated two decades ago.

"Nowadays, I think conditioning training is gauged for the individual rather
than the group," said Gale. "As a group at West Ham, they'd have us all
training together and all doing the same things, so you'd have little Mark
Ward lifting the same weights as me and me doing the same sprint training as
a little Mark Ward.

"It's more controlled now and the players really don't have any excuses
because it's lovely to work in that environment."

While fitness drills have moved on since Gale's time, the condition of the
pitches has also improved, with new techniques ensuring the playing surfaces
are lush regardless of the time of year.

"Looking at the pitches, we used to have scorched, bone-hard surfaces and
there used to be a lot of injuries, particularly knees, ankles and achilles
injuries, in pre-season training. It was hard work."

Following a week of training at Chadwell Heath, the squad will take on Blue
Square Premier outfit Grays Athletic at the New Rec on Sunday 12 July before
heading to Austria for a fortnight.

There, the players will continue their training, while also playing
friendlies against local side SC Raiffeissen Furstenfeld and German UEFA Cup
finalists Werder Bremen. Further matches have been provisionally arranged
against Turkish club Bursaspor and Slovenian side ND Mura 05.

On their return from Austria, the players will have a short break before
flying to China. There, West Ham will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the
Barclays Asia Trophy on 29 July, with a possible final against Hull City or
Beijing Guoan to follow two days later.

Gale believes both trips will be of huge benefit to manager Gianfranco Zola
and his players.

"The training camp in Austria will be a lovely environment to work in," said
Gale. "It will get the lads away from Chadwell Heath, because they spend
enough time there over the course of the season, to a specific training camp
where they can work in some great facilities in great weather.

"After that they will be off to China. We've got Spurs over there which
we're all looking forward to, then it's back here for the Bobby Moore Cup
against Napoli [at the Boleyn Ground on 8 August]. I'm looking forward to a
really good season from them."

Vultures in trouble ... again

Sheffield United could potentially face a multi-million pound claim from
Preston North End after Blades goalkeeper Paddy Kenny failed a drugs test.
Kenny was tested postive for a banned substance following a test taken prior
to last season's Championship semi-final play-off - a tie that the Blades
won 2-1 on aggregate and saw them coin in from a lucrative play-off final
tie with Burnley. The goalkeeper was credited with a major part in the
second semi-final which Sheffield United won 1-0; the Daily Mail noted how
Kenny produced a 'full-length save from Jon Parkin' during the second half.

The goalkeeper also had a hand in the Blades' goal in the first leg, the
Mail again reporting how "Kenny sent a ball upfield, Lonergan did well to
save at Greg Halford's feet and the ball squirted out to the right where it
was retrieved by Ward, who delivered a cross that was thumped home on the
full by Howard."

Kenny - who is likely to receive a lengthy ban and fine from the FA
following his failed test - could also cost his club massive damages should
Preston decide to proceed with legal action. North End could now claim that
they were denied the chance of appearing in a showpiece Wembley play-off
final and the chance of reaching the Premier League as a result of the
goalkeeper's presence - and with Lord Griffiths setting a precedent in last
year's case with West Ham United when he declared that one player can affect
not just one game, but the course of an entire season - the Blades could now
be on the receiving end of a decision which proved so lucrative for them in
the Carlos Tevez case.

Griffiths on Tevez: September 2008

"We think it more likely than not on the evidence that we heard, that even
over the final two games of the season, West Ham would have achieved at
least three points less overall without Mr Tevez. He played outstandingly
well in the two wins that West Ham secured in those last two games."

Bramall Shame: getting away with murder

June 2007: Premier League investigate claims that the Blades broke rule U18
relating to third-party influence in the transfer of Steve Kabba to Watford.

September 2008: Sheffield United win millions in damages from West Ham
United at the fourth attempt in the Carlos Tevez case.

November 2008: Sheffield Utd defender Chris Morgan leaves Barnsley striker
Iain Hume fighting for life after a vicious on-field assault.

January 2009: Blades accused of third-party influence in the transfer of
Matthew Spring from Luton to Charlton.

March 2009: Sunderland, Preston, West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United
announce plans for legal action against the Blades for failing to comply
with 'certain contractual conditions'.

April 2009: Barnsley FC announce plans to sue United for the loss of Iain
Hume.

June 2009: Former Sheffield Utd boss Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace fined
£20,000 and deducted one point for fielding an ineligible player.

July 2009: Blades 'keeper Paddy Kenny - who played in all three Championship
play-off ties - fails a drugs test.

Neill future still uncertain

Lucas Neill's agent says that his client remains in talks with West Ham
United. Paddy Dominguez, Neill's Australian-based manager confirmed that
whilst a deal is yet to be struck, the West Ham and Socceroos captain
remains interested in extending his stay in London. So far the Hammers have
offered Neill a 'take-it-or-leave-it offer', something which the 31-year-old
has thus far refused to accept. However a deal may yet be done, according to
Dominguez - although he warned that other clubs were interested in signing
the player. "It has always been the preference of Lucas that he wants to
remain at West Ham - but it is up to the club administration to execute
that," he said. The ownership has changed a number of times since Lucas has
been at the club. Now it's different because they are bankers. We are giving
them every opportunity to reach agreement but there are other EPL and
Continental clubs in the mix."
Dominguez also claimed that Gianfranco Zola had told Neill that he wished
for him to remain at the club. "Zola has been speaking with Lucas," he
added, "and from his point of view, he not only wants him at the club next
season but to remain as the captain of the club."
Hammers CEO Scott Duxbury told KUMB.com last week that Neill had been
looking for a new deal on the same terms as his 'Magnusson' contract - but
made it clear that the club would not budge an inch on their latest offer,
which remains on the table. "Lucas has been given a contract that would make
him one of our top earners, certainly slightly more than the established
senior players that you see every week," he said. "But that's still there
for him to accept."

Fortune heads for Celtic
Striker in Glasgow to discuss move
Last updated: 6th July 2009
SSN

Striker Marc-Antoine Fortune has travelled to Glasgow for talks with Celtic,
his French club Nancy have revealed. Celtic are one of number of club keen
to secure Fortune's services, with Hull City, Fulham, West Ham and
Portsmouth also said to be interested. Parkhead boss Tony Mowbray worked
with the Frenchman during his loan spell with West Brom next season. Nancy
announced on their official website that Fortune was in Glasgow to "visit
the Celtic set-up". But general manager Nicholas Holveck added: "Any
decision has still to be made." Nancy are thought to have accepted a number
of bids of around £3.8million for Fortune. Nancy also confirmed that Celtic
were interested in midfielder Landry N'Guemo, who is being tracked by other
clubs. Mowbray last week admitted he was hoping that the lure of Celtic and
their personal relationship would encourage Fortune to snub a more lucrative
deal in England. "My advantage is I have worked with him - he knows me as a
coach, I know his strengths and weaknesses," he said. "I don't think it's
any secret that the English Premier League clubs get £30-35million each year
off their television deals and the Scottish clubs don't. "But what I do know
is we have a huge pulling power from the support and the history and
tradition of this club. "Believe it or not, there's a lot of footballers who
play for the love of the game as well as the money that goes with it. "To
play for a club fighting for championships, hoping to compete in the
Champions League is a much bigger draw than taking the money sometimes and
going and fighting against relegation and playing in a league when there are
only really four teams who can ever compete to win that league."
