Preview - Newcastle United
WHUFC.com
The background
West Ham United return to Barclays Premier League action following the
international break on Monday when they host 18th-placed Newcastle United.
The Magpies dropped into the bottom three of the early top flight table on
Saturday after taking just two points from their opening four games. Defeats
to Arsenal and Swansea City and draws with Manchester United and Southampton
have meant new boss Steve McClaren has had a mixed start to life in the St
James' Park hotseat, following the club's narrow escape from relegation last
term.
The Magpies needed a victory over West Ham on the final day of last season
to finish the job for themselves and will be keen to avoid another campaign
of struggle.
West Ham, meanwhile, are hoping for their first home points of the campaign
following Boleyn Ground defeats to Leicester City and AFC Bournemouth.
Having made four deadline day signings, the likes of Victor Moses, Michail
Antonio and Nikica Jelavic could be in line for debuts.
The history
West Ham and Newcastle have faced each other on 127 occasions in competitive
action. Newcastle hold the edge, having won 51 of those matches to the
Hammers' 39.
The clubs first met in the FA Cup back in February 1908, when a 2-0 victory
for the Magpies ended the then-Southern League Hammers' interest in the
competition.
Two more cup ties followed before the first league meeting in 1923, which
also produced West Ham's first win over the north east side.
Last season, Aaron Cresswell notched the only goal of the game when the two
teams faced off at the Boleyn Ground, while Moussa Sissoko and Jonas
Gutierrez secured the Magpies' Premier League safety when they won 2-0
against West Ham on the final day of the campaign.
The Hammers' Andy Carroll played 80 league games for Newcastle at the start
of his career.

ban, meaning Darren Randolph will again deputise in goal.
Newcastle United
The Magpies are without striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is serving a
three-match suspension following his red card against Arsenal.
Meanwhile, defender Paul Dummett is also sidelined after suffering a setback
in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

against the Magpies, with three draws and four defeats in that time.

Hammers sign Serbian starlet Belic
WHUFC.com
West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of exciting young
striker Luka Belic, who joins the Hammers on a permanent deal from
top-flight Serbian outfit OFK Beograd, subject to international clearance.
Capped by his native Serbia throughout the age groups, Belic became the
youngest player to feature in Serbia's top division as a 16-year-old in
April 2012, a record which he holds to this day.
Now an U19 Serbia international, the 19-year-old has signed a one-year deal
with the option of a second and will start life at West Ham with Academy
Manager Terry Westley's Development Squad. "It's a dream come true for me
and I'm looking forward to playing games and scoring a lot of goals," he
told whufc.com. "I'm already loving it here! "I'm going to go step by step,
work hard and play well for the U21s. I'm looking forward, firstly, to
playing for the U21s and then, hopefully, my dream is to one day play for
the first team.
"I think it's going to be great here at West Ham. They're going to help me a
lot and I plan to help the team a lot too. "My job is to score goals and
hopefully, one day, when I play for the first team I will score goals.
That's the thing that I like the most and that's what the fans can expect."
"Terry [Westley] told me a lot of great things about the Club. He showed me
a video of how the Stadium's going to look next season and I told him that
I'm hoping that next season I will play at that Stadium. I'm hoping that's
going to happen."
Head of Academy Recruitment Dave Hunt believes the Academy have another
promising prospect on their hands in Belic and hopes he can take full
advantage of the opportunity before him. "He's an exciting signing for us
in the forward department," Hunt confirmed. "He'll go into the Development
Squad, hopefully prove himself in there and then climb as high as we're
looking for from him. We hope to see him in the future pushing for first
team opportunities. "We'd watched him a few times, he's enthusiastic, he
works really hard out of possession for the team and is a good finisher. "He
presses from the front really well, always looking to search in behind. His
work-rate and desire to get in behind and get on the ball is exceptional and
he's been impressive in the time that we've seen him."
Though Belic has only ever watched Barclays Premier League football from
afar, he already feels well acquainted with West Ham's fans and counts
Hammers favourite Paolo Di Canio among his football heroes. He continued: "I
know they have the best fans in England! I know they're blowing bubbles
before the game and I always loved West Ham when I watched them on TV. "I
always watch the Premier League, it's my favourite league and England is the
best country for football. They have the best league in the world and I'm so
happy to come here.
"There were a lot of big players here. I know a lot of legends, like Paolo
Di Canio, he's one of the best for me, he was a great player. I love him and
hopefully one day I can be like him."

From the Commentary Box - Martin Tyler
WHUFC.com
Sky Sports legend Martin Tyler is looking forward to commentating on the
final ever season at the Boleyn Ground and is expecting an exciting game
when West Ham United face Newcastle in the live televised clash on Monday
night. Tyler has many fond memories of his broadcasting career in east
London and always enjoys seeing the Hammers in action. The 69-year-old
attended the Club's training ground on Friday as he finalised his extensive
pre-match research and watched the players train ahead of the big game.
Tyler is looking forward to seeing West Ham United's new signings in action
and is expecting an exciting season under new manager Slaven Bilic. Tyler
said: "Games are always special under the lights at Upton Park. It was a
great part of my football education and it will be sad to say goodbye to the
Boleyn Ground. But it is a great for the Club when they move into the new
Stadium. "I expect a committed and determined West Ham on Monday night. I
have listened to Slaven and I expect them to play with a sense of purpose.
"I think Slaven is a great appointment. He brings his own style and
obviously has the Club in his heart from his playing days. Winning at
Arsenal and Liverpool is a good message to the supporters. He brings a huge
amount of experience from the top level."

Dev Squad ready for Rovers
WHUFC.com
West Ham United's Development Squad travel to Blackburn Rovers on Monday
night with both sides looking for their first wins of the new season.
Despite dominating their opening game against West Brom, the young Hammers
somehow lost before being edged out by Aston Villa and Arsenal. Monday's
hosts, Blackburn Rovers have also struggled meanwhile, scoring just once in
three games – a valuable 1-1 away draw at Newcastle United. So far, Academy
Manager Terry Westley has fielded mixed strength sides from Argentine
livewire Manuel Lanzini and fellow first team squad members Diego Poyet and
Reece Burke to handing U21 debuts to highly rated youngsters Declan Rice,
George Dobson and Marcus Browne. As the Dev Squad are in action on the same
evening as the first team host Newcastle United at the Boleyn Ground,
Westley is likely to deploy another young side against the Lancashire
outfit. The Development Squad play Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on
Monday 14 September, kick off is 7pm.

Barclays Premier League
Venue: Upton Park Date: Monday, 14 September
TEAM NEWS
Andy Carroll is in contention for West Ham after recovering from a knee
injury, but Alex Song, who has rejoined on loan, is out with an ankle
problem. The Hammers' trio of new signings, Victor Moses, Michail Antonio
and Nikica Jelavic, are all available.
Newcastle will be without striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is serving a
three-match suspension. Defender Paul Dummett is also out after suffering a
setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.
MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES
Jonathan Pearce: "Upton Park has been blanketed with sentimentality as it
enters the final season. The players have looked stifled by it all, starting
with defeats by Bournemouth and Leicester like shuffling sleepwalkers. "But
the old ground really wakes up under floodlights. Now West Ham's home form
might match their away successes. "Slaven Bilic believes the win at
Liverpool was hugely significant in the club's progression. "With just one
goal in eight away league games, Newcastle lack potency. They've averaged
just over 30% of possession in their last three games which is concerning.
"If West Ham start well, the visitors might not see enough of the ball to
get back into it."
Twitter: @jpearcefootball
WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY
West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: "It is very important. We need to win at
home, or at least to get something from the game because we need to build on
our great away results. "We have to start picking up points at home, and I'm
very confident because our reactions in the second halves of both games were
good, and if we can do it from the start and cut out the silly mistakes, we
will be alright."
Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren: "We feel we're establishing a platform.
We've seen evidence of that but we've been down to 10 men in two of the four
games. "We need the breaks. We need to play better football, create more
chances and score more goals and the results will come."
LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Nobody is doubting the ability of Newcastle boss Steve McClaren - but now it
is a case of him finding his best team and knitting it together. West Ham
are proving very difficult to predict at the moment, winning away at Arsenal
and Liverpool but losing both games at home, so I am probably best off going
for a draw.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Newcastle have only lost two of their previous nine league games at Upton
Park (won four, drew three).
West Ham have earned just one win in their last five Premier League meetings
with Newcastle (drew two, lost two).
Aaron Cresswell scored the only goal in this fixture last season as West Ham
won 1-0 in November.
West Ham United
West Ham are yet to win a point at home under Slaven Bilic (lost two).
They have lost their last three Premier League games at Upton Park,
conceding eight goals in the process.
The Hammers have scored with 22% of their shots this season - a league high.
They have been shown six red cards in 10 games this season in all
competitions, compared to three in 43 matches in 2014-15.
Newcastle United
Newcastle are still awaiting their first league win of the season - last
year they went seven games without a victory at the start of the campaign.
They have failed to score in their last three Premier League matches (lost
two, drew one).
The Magpies have not won any of their last nine away games in the league
(lost seven, drew two).
However, their draw at Old Trafford in their last away match ended a run of
seven straight defeats away from home.

The Ex Hammers column
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 13th September 2015
By: Staff Writer
It was a busy day for ex-Hammers in yesterday's Premier League and Football
League programme.
As reported yesterday afternoon, Matt Jarvis - who only managed four Premier
League goals for West Ham during his three years at the club - scored on his
debut for Norwich City, with whom he is on a season-long loan.
And n the same fixture, Junior Stanislas - who spent 11 years at West Ham as
a youngster - made his first Premier League appearance for Bournemouth,
despite ending up on the losing side.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Swiss international Valon Behrami - who
moved from Fiorentina to Watford in the summer - was sent of for a reckless
challenge on Swansea's Andre Ayew, a player strongly linked to West Ham
during the transfer window. However the 30-year-old's dismissal failed to
affect the final score as his new side won 1-0 courtesy of Idion Ighalo's
59th minute goal.
Down in the Championship there were goals for no less than four former
Hammers. Matt Taylor saved a point for Burnley at home to Birmingham with a
splendid free kick nine minutes from time that earned the Clarets a 2-2
draw.
And Stewart Downing scored his first goal for Middlesbrough since returning
to Teeside last month when he grabbed the opening goal in 'Boro's 2-0 win at
home to recently-promoted MK Dons, themselves featuring the on-loan Diego
Poyet, Jordan Spence and Robert Hall.
Meanwhile Freddie Sears continued his red-hot form for Ipswich as he grabbed
his fourth goal in five games in the Tractor Boys heavy 5-1 defeat at
Reading.
And over at Loftus Road in the clash between Queens Park Rangers and
Nottingham Forest, Henri Lansbury scored from the penalty spot after Rob
Green pulled down Chris O'Grady having failed to control Nedum Onuoha's
back-pass.
Lansbury of course replaced Green in goal during West Ham's 4-1 Championship
win at Blackpool back in February 2012, when the goalkeeper was sent off on
that occasion. Lansbury had the last laugh this weekend too as Forest ran
out 2-1 winners.
Further down the pyramid, this time in League One, George Moncur registered
his second goal in three games for struggling Colchester who sneaked a point
at Chesterfield in a 3-3 draw.
And finally, a little bit further afield (some 4,000 miles or so, give or
take the odd mile) Modibo Maiga scored a hat-trick for his new club Al Nassr
in their 5-1 win over Al Nahdha in a Crown Prince Cup clash in Riyadh.

Kevin Nolan explains West Ham exit on Goals on Sunday
Last Updated: 13/09/15 3:24pm
SSN
Kevin Nolan says the moment was right for him to leave West Ham because he
would only have ended up languishing on the bench this season.
The former Hammers captain left the club by mutual consent at the end of
August, but denied that the departure of former boss Sam Allardyce was a
factor, or that he fell out with new manager Slaven Bilic. Nolan, linked in
Sunday's newspapers with a return to old club Bolton, but still pondering
his next move, told Goals on Sunday: "It was a wrench to leave West Ham, but
it was the right time.
"Slaven was brilliant when he came in and we got on really well. He was
honest and we just came to the agreement that it would probably be best if I
moved on. "He said 'you're not guaranteed a place', which I've never had in
my entire career, contrary to what people think, when I played under Sam.
But he was wanting to bring in a lot of midfielders, which would have put me
back a bit more. "I've come to the decision that I'm not going to play as
much and I don't want to just sit there and earn my money. For the majority
of my career I've played every week and last year, sitting on the bench
didn't really suit me. "I was very miserable at home, the wife will probably
tell you, so it came to the point this year, I thought I'm not going to play
as much as I would have liked. "I've had four fantastic years. I've got some
great mates there that I'll have for life, but I want to go to a new chapter
and contribute to a new beginning of something. I want to be a part of that
and achieve something again."
Denying that Allardyce's summer exit had any bearing on his decision to quit
Upton Park, the 33-year-old Nolan said: "It probably would have happened
anyway. "A lot of people thought it was just [all about] me and Sam, but I
was probably the one that battled more with Sam than anyone in the dressing
room. "I can't thank him enough for what he's given me. He's given me my
chance in the top flight. But I'd like to think I've repaid him 10 times
over." Nolan added: "I've been very encouraged and humbled with the amount
of people who've wanted to speak to me in the last couple of weeks. But it's
a major decision and I've got my kids and the family [to consider], so we're
going to have to sit down and see what's best. "I'm going into coaching in
the next couple of years, so it could be a move abroad to broaden my
knowledge of the game." I've come to the decision that I'm not going to play
as much and I don't want to just sit there and earn my money.
Nolan has the unenviable record of being the Englishman with the most
Premier League appearances never to have won an England cap. But he says he
came close. "I've spoken to England managers who've said: 'I should have
given you a cap," he said. "It is a frustration, but no regrets. There have
been some unbelievable England midfielders [ahead of me], world-class
players. The Gerrards, the Lampards. "It's a bit sad that I haven't got a
cap, but I'm just delighted to have had 400 plus appearances in the best
league in the world and had three promotions on top of that. I'm delighted
with my career."

West Ham sign Serbian striker Luka Belic from Beograd

West Ham have signed teenage striker Luka Belic from Serbian club OFK

record which he still holds. The forward has signed a one-year deal with
the option of a second and will initially be part of West Ham's development
squad. "It's a dream come true for me and I'm looking forward to playing

Slav shows hand in Carroll debate

C AND H
Well a few of us – including me – had better hold our hands up! It seems the
Andy Carroll/Slaven Bilic debate is over and those of us who doubted whether
the big fella would find favour with the new boss may have got it wrong.
From everything I'm reading that the boss can't wait to get him back. He's
even managed to leave the impression that the striker's biggest managerial
fan, Mr Allardyce – didn't prepare him for matches properly and thus
exacerbated his injury problems. He's made it clear too that AC has had a
proper pre-season and that he is very tempted to throw him into the action
tomorrow night against Newcastle. Even David Gold has tweeted that he is
almost certain to be in the squad – albeit on the bench – whilst former
player Matthew Etherington has been on the social network naming AC as the
best striker in the club ahead of Diafra Sakho Life since Sam has moved so
quickly it's worth remembering for one brief moment the degree of
flexibility that the new manager has introduced. That players such as Payet
and Lanzini were involved AT Anfield where once we West Ham might have been
expected to park the bus is surprising and enjoyable. That he likes Carroll
may surprise some but this is a manager who knows how to use players and
operate to their strengths. Tomorrow night's starting line-up will be
fascinating, the substitutions of acute interest and the rest of the season
entirely engrossing. This really is a great time to be an Iron!

Adebayor release – Hammers respond

News that Emmanuel Adebayor has been released from his Spurs contract has
just broken on Twitter but West Ham won't be returning for the player. The
Irons stopped speculation in its tracks this morning as the possibility of
a move to Upton Park started to exercise a few minds! A Boleyn source
immediately told us: "We won't be going back. We have 25 players and cannot
register anymore The big striker's future has been in doubt for weeks and on
the official Spurs account an announcement reads: "We can confirm that we've
reached a mutual agreement with @E_Adebayor which will see him released from
his contract with the Club." Slaven Bilic has also revealed that he had an
hour-long chat with the player.

Gold's defence of striker
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on September 13, 2015 in News, Whispers
C AND H
David Gold has given a pretty snappy answer to those who continue to
entertain doubts about Andy Carroll. The co-chairman is convinced that this
time around we are set for an injury free run from a player whom he admires
enormously. Speaking exclusively to ClaretandHugh he said: "The knee injury
against Southampton really was bad luck because his two main issues have
been heel and ankle. The heel injury has been solved. We know exactly how to
maintain it – that's fine. "And as far as the ankle is concerned he has had
all the surgery and rehab required for that to no longer be an issue. He had
a 'loose' ankle but it has now been rebuilt and that too is fine. "He and
therefore us have had some bad luck but we are both due a turn of fortunes."
After seeing Carroll take taking some widespread abuse on Twitter Gold said
that the player's total determination to make yet another return is
admirable and should be respected by everybody.
He made it clear that having seen the player's approach to rehab that his
attitude is spot on on and that he believes his approach has been courageous
in the extreme. Meanwhile in a response on the social network as to whether
the striker will ever give us value for the £18 million we club paid for
him, DG said: "I am confident that he will get a England call up in the not
to distant future. dg"

Slav nails the Carroll problem!
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on September 13, 2015 in News, Whispers
C AND H
Slaven Bilic has revealed that Andy Carroll's injury problems are as much to
do with being pushed back into action too quickly as adopting an overly
aggressive approach during games.
Sam Allardyce claimed the second reason as being the primary problem but the
new Hammers manager explained: ""The reason he got so many injuries was not
only because of the way he was playing but also because he was playing when
he was not totally ready."
The record signing looks certain to get a run-out at some point against his
former club tomorrow night with Slav declaring: "I don't want to stop his
approach. I want to moderate it. If you take that away from Andy Carroll
then he wouldn't be Andy Carroll."
"His biggest quality is that he goes in and scares defenders. It is almost
impossible to mark him in the box.
"He could get away with it if he was a different kind of footballer – tidy,
not making challenges. The main problem was he was coming on the pitch after
only two or three days of training.
"He has now had six weeks of hard training. It is almost like signing a new
player and, yes, I am tempted to play him against his old team."
