Bilic - 'We want to win'
WHUFC.com
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic holds a firm belief that his team will
still progress in the UEFA Europa League despite letting a two-goal lead
slip in the first leg against Astra Giurgiu. The Hammers face the second leg
of their third qualifying round tie in Romania on Thursday, just three days
before the start of the Barclays Premier League campaign. Bilic is likely to
make several changes to the team that took to the field a week ago, but he
says that does not mean he is taking the competition lightly. "It's a good
game for us," he said. "It's a European game and we are very respectful of
this competition. Its 2-2 after the first leg and we were not happy with the
result "We were 2-0 up after 55 minutes, but they showed after the red card
what we knew - that they have quality. "They gained in confidence after they
made it 2-1. We were a little bit down because of the red card and the
equaliser puts us in a more difficult situation [than we would have liked].
"We are going to give everything to beat Astra. It is going to be hard in
their home ground, but we are going to try, of course."
West Ham may have left the likes of Mark Noble, James Tomkins and Aaron
Cresswell at home, but they still possess plenty of experience with players
such as Kevin Nolan, Carl Jenkinson, Manuel Lanzini, Darren Randolph and
Modibo Maiga all in Romania. Bilic says he has faith in his players to gain
the result they need, both against Astra and Arsenal. He added: "It was the
plan before to play the team we did in the first leg, but it was always part
of the plan that because the Premier League begins on Sunday that some
players would stay at home.
"But we have come here with a good team that I have a strong belief in. We
want to win every game and it is a risk, ok [to leave some players at home],
but I am taking that risk because of the bigger picture. "Thursday's game is
a very important game for us and we have senior players all over the pitch.
We have senior players in defence, in midfield we have our Club captain and
players who have played in the Premier League."Up front we have Lanzini, we
have Modibo {Maiga] so I am really looking forward to the game."

Jenkinson confident of Hammers chances
WHUFC.com
Carl Jenkinson firmly believes the Hammers have what it takes to overcome
Astra Giurgiu in the Hammers second leg tie in Romania on Thursday night.
Speaking to the media ahead of the crucial tie, the 23-year-old insisted
that he and the rest of the squad are confident of progressing to the fourth
qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League. "Astra are a good side, the
fact they got a draw at our place shows that. This game is slightly
complicated by the fact we play Arsenal three days later. We know we need to
perform, it won't be easy, but I'm confident that we can win. "We've bought
a strong enough squad with us, one more than capable of winning."
Following a successful loan spell in east London last season, the England
international described his delight at extending his loan spell for a second
season. "I'm over the moon to be back at West Ham and buzzing to be back
playing football. In the past twelve months, I played by far the most games
in a single season. "So I needed a rest mentally and physically but now I'm
back, feeling good and can't wait to get back to it. "I've experienced
European football before and it's always a good experience. Every player
wants to test themselves and you learn a lot about yourself as a player.
"Everyone here and at the Club wants to go through tomorrow, that is the
bottom line. We all know how important European football is to the fans.
Added to the fact it's the last season at the Boleyn Ground it's a great
addition to an already important season."

Europa League preview: Astra Giurgiu v West Ham

Slaven Bilic is set to field a second-string side against Astra Giurgiu on
Thursday night in West Ham's Europa League third qualifying round second leg
in Romania. Carl Jenkinson, who is ineligible for Sunday's Premier League
opener against Arsenal, and Kevin Nolan are the only recognised first-team
players who have travelled to Bucharest. The home side Astra are expected to
include former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Filipe Texeira in their
starting line-up. "It's a different squad front the first game, but that was
always the plan," said Bilic. "We were always going to play the first leg
with the best team. But it was always part of our plan, because of the start
of the Premier League on Sunday - which is the priority - that we would come
here with a strong team - but a team where some players have stayed at
home." "It would be very difficult to play here and then start at the
Emirates on Sunday.
Bilic believes his young squad, consisting of Diego Poyet and new signing
Manuel Lanzini, can still came away with a result that will see them secure
a Europa League qualification play-off place. "We weren't happy with the
result in the first leg, particularly after going 2-0 up after 55 minutes,"
Bilic added. "But this is a good game for us. It's a European game and we
are very respectful of this competition. Can we still win? Of course, why
are we here otherwise?" The match kicks off at Stadionul Marin Anastasovici
at 19.00 BST.

and Aaron Cresswell are at home, such as Kevin Nolan, Carl Jenkinson,
Manuel Lanzini, Darren Randolph and Modibo Maiga all in Romania.

Bilic: 'We will do everything to try to win'

Slaven Bilic and Carl Jenkinson faced a press conference in Romania this
afternoon. Bilic told reporters: "It's a good game for us and we are very
respectful of this competition. We were not happy with the result last week.
We are in a more difficult situation than we would have liked but we will do
everything to try to win. We have come here with a good team that I have a
strong belief in, but it is difficult to play here, then fly back for
Arsenal. The situation for most of the clubs who are playing the
qualification rounds is the same. We started pre-season very early. In the
first game, the biggest impact was the red card for Collins. It gave Astra a
little bit of confidence."
"They showed their quality after that. We want to win tomorrow, of course.
I'll say it again, I have strong belief in my team. There are senior players
in every line on the pitch. Lanzini is one of them and he showed on Sunday
he was lively"
Carl Jenkinson sitting next to his manager added: "We've got a lot of
quality throughout the squad. The Gaffer has left some players at home with
an eye on Sunday, but we have more than enough ability to go out there and
win tomorrow. You learn about yourself as a player in Europe and of course
we want to progress. That's the aim and we know the fans would love that. We
went from being in control to technically being behind. We need to score,
it's going to be a tough tie, but we're prepared. We've all played in the
heat before and I'm sure we'll be fine with it."

Thursday's 2nd leg against FC Astra is expected to be largely youngsters
with a few first team players such Nolan, Maiga and Jenkinson addding
experience. West Ham are level on 2-2 but need to win to progress to the
play off qualifying stage of the European competition.

West Ham arrive in Bucharest ahead of big Europa test

West Ham United's Europa League squad has arrived in Romania ahead of
tomorrow night's third qualifying round, second leg tie with Astra Giurgiu.
And whilst Slaven Bilic has refused to allow his first team players to
travel ahead of Sunday's short trip to Arsenal, the team will still have an
experienced feel to it with the likes of Kevin Nolan, Modibo Maiga, Carl
Jenkinson and goalkeeper Darren Randolph having travelled with the party.
Bilic and his entourage will be joined by just over 300 travelling
supporters for the match, in which West Ham have to win or secure a
high-scoring draw in order to proceed to the Europa League's final play-off
phase.
However they'll have to do it without the likes of Adrian, Diafra Sakho,
Cheik Kouyate and Dimitri Payet, who have been left at home in order to
prepare for Sunday's Premier League opener against Arsenal at the Emirates.
Likely starting XI: Randolph, Page, Jenkinson, Oxford, Burke, Poyet,
Lanzini, Jarvis, Samuelsen, Nolan, Maiga.
Elsewhere the Under 21s are in action at Ryman League Canvey Island FC
tonight. "This game gives us another opportunity to play against a men's
team, which is invaluable experience," said new Academy boss Terry Westley.
Limited tickets will be available on the gate; meanwhile the creative folk
at CIFC have put together this little montage ahead of tonight's clash,
which kicks off at 7.45pm.

Slaven Bilic hints at Manuel Lanzini debut for West Ham in Europa League tie

Manuel Lanzini could be in line to make his debut for West Ham this week.
Speaking in a press conference prior to West Ham's Europa League game with
Astra Giurgiu, Slaven Bilic has hinted at Manuel Lanzini making his Hammers
debut against the Romanian side. Lanzini arrived on loan from Al Jazira club
earlier this summer, and appeared in the pre-season friendly with Werder
Bremen at the weekend. He impressed in the game, and his brand of stylish
creative play will improve the Hammers attacking play this term. Creating
chances has been an issue for the club in recent years, and alongside
Dimitri Payet - a fellow new signing - Lanzini should be the main attacking
outlet.
He has traveled with the squad to Romania this week to take on Astra, and is
one of few senior players selected as Slaven Bilic prepares for the start of
the Premier League this weekend. Carl Jenkinson, Kevin Nolan and Darren
Randolph were also selected, and it is likely all four players will start as
the Hammers look to claim a victory in Romania after falling to a 2-2 draw
at the Boleyn Ground last week.
Experience and talent will be needed to claim a win, and Lanzini may be the
player to show off his impressive skills on the way to securing victory for
his new side.

WEST HAM AND SAINTS FACE DIFFERING EUROPA LEAGUE CHANCES
News.ladbrokes.com
After the completion of Thursday night's third qualifying round second legs
in the Europa League, the relative big boys will enter the fray for the
competition's play-off stage.
The three UK-based sides still fighting it out in the qualifiers will hope
to be there, but each one faces a very different task to do so.
Here is a brief look ahead at West Ham, Southampton and Aberdeen's matches,
including any special offers Ladbrokes have lined up for the events:
Astra Giurgiu v West Ham
Things haven't been going swimmingly for Slaven Bilic in the competition so
far. His side needed penalties to see off Malta's Birkirkara in the last
round and let a two-goal lead slip at home against this Romanian opponent
after James Collins became their third sending off of the season.
Astra, who are 7/4 to win in 90 minutes, have progressed from this stage of
the Europa League in the last two campaigns and even went on to pip Lyon to
a group stage berth last term. Cause for Hammers concern.
After the 2-2 draw in the first leg, Ladbrokes are offering 4/1 (out from
11/4) on West Ham winning with both teams scoring.
Vitesse v Southampton
It was a far simpler first leg for the Saints, who secured a 3-0 win over
Vitesse at home, with the goals coming from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and
Shane Long. Now Ronald Koeman returns to the site of his first managerial
job, priced up at 5/4 to triumph in the second leg.
Ladbrokes also go 4/1 about a win for the south coasters in a game where
both teams score, boosted from 3s.
Aberdeen v Kairat Almaty
The Scottish outfit have the toughest task of the trio to book a play-off
place, having travelled 5,500km to lose 2-1 to their Kazakhstan opponents
last time out.
There is a shred of hope, thanks to Kenny McLean's consolation away goal and
Ladbrokes offer odds of 21/20 that the SPFL outfit spare their blushes with
victory at Pittodrie.
