Noble thankful for Jussi saves

Jussi Jaaskelainen's eye-catching display at Southampton pleased Hammers
midfielder Mark Noble

Mark Noble was full of praise for goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen after he
made a string of fine saves to preserve West Ham United's point at
Southampton on Sunday. Jaaskelainen denied Dani Osvaldo, Morgan Schneiderlin
and Rickie Lambert as the Finn proved unbeatable en route to a third clean
sheet from four Barclays Premier League starts this term. Noble was
impressed not only with his display, but that of the whole back four as the
Hammers' solidity continued.
While he now wants to see a greater ruthlessness from the Londoners going
forward, he was satisfied with the hard-won point at St Mary's. "Jussi made
a couple of great saves and at the end of the day, we were happy with a
point," he said. "We haven't been scoring goals lately, but we have been
keeping clean sheets and it was good to come away with a point against a
good side in Southampton. "When you're not scoring goals you need your
goalkeeper to be on it, and on Sunday he was. He made a few great saves for
us, and then we've had a chance late on for Ginge to win it. "In training
the big man normally sticks those away, but he's shanked that one over the
bar, so he was gutted in the changing room after, but overall we were happy
with the point. "We were poor a couple of weeks ago against Stoke and that's
unlike us. We played well against Newcastle and had chances to win the game,
we played well against Cardiff and did okay again at Southampton. "Sometimes
playing away from home you need that little bit of luck. Rickie [Lambert]
hit the post with a header, and they might have won it, but we stuck in,
Jussi did great and we came away a point."

Watch out, Jussi! Hammers new boy Petric shows he can save as well as score
with injury time penalty stop in UEFA Cup tie

Mladen Petric has been signed to ease West Ham's striker problems but the
Croatian international can also cover at goalkeeper if called upon. The
former Fulham player, who has moved to Upton Park on a one year deal, pulled
off a remarkable injury-time penalty save in the 2006-07 UEFA Cup. With the
score level at 2-2, Petric, then playing for FC Basel, stepped up in the
93rd minute to save a spot-kick when goalkeeper Franco Costanzo was sent
off. Petric got down low to his left to stop the penalty from Morocco
international Mickeal Chretien and rescued a point for his side. Watch out
Jussi Jaaskelainen. The 32-year-old was signed following an injury to West
Ham's record signing Andy Carroll. Carroll suffered a foot injury at the
club's Chadwell Heath HQ on Monday having heard a 'pop' in his troublesome
heel.
