Mauricio Taricco and Jimmy Wood take centre-stage on this date in West Ham
United's history
10.03.2013
Anniversary
Mauricio Taricco
Date of birth: 10 March 1973
Clubs: Argentinos Juniors, Ipswich Town, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United,
AS Villasimius, Brighton and Hove Albion
Mauricio Taricco spent just 27 minutes as a West Ham United player, but will
forever be thought of fondly in east London after generously agreeing to
have his contract ripped up after suffering a serious hamstring injury on
his debut. The Argentina-born former Argentinos Juniors, Ipswich Town and
Tottenham Hotspur full-back joined the Hammers in the autumn of 2004 and was
named in the starting XI by manager Alan Pardew for the Championship fixture
at Millwall on 21 November. However, when the defender tore his hamstring at
The New Den, ruling him out for eight weeks, he offered to pull out of the
short-term contract he had signed with the club and retired from
professional football. The gesture was lauded by Pardew and the club's Board
and supporters alike. Taricco was able to return to playing with Italian
lower-league club AS Villasimius before taking on a coaching role under Gus
Poyet at Brighton and Hove Albion. There, he pulled on his boots again in
November 2010 - six years after his last game in English football. He has
not played a competitive fixture for the Seagulls since January 2012.
Classic Match
Lincoln City 0-2 West Ham United
Football League Division Two
10 March 1934
Jimmy Wood was a speedy outside-right who bagged 13 goals in 67 appearances
for West Ham United between 1929 and 1935, including one in a 2-0 Division
Two win at Lincoln City on this date in 1934. Born in Royton in Lancashire -
now Greater Manchester - Wood began his professional career with Hyde
United. After a short spell with Bournemouth, he returned to Hyde before
joining West Ham in July 1929. Over the next six seasons, he was in and out
of the first XI, never making more than 17 appearances in a single season.
However, Wood did start the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Everton at Molineux
on 18 March 1933.
Despite his uncertain status, Wood scored at least one goal in each of his
six campaigns in claret and blue, including four in 16 appearances in
1933/34. One of those goals came in a 2-0 win at Sincil Bank. Jimmy Ruffell
was also on target in front of a crowd of just 5,213 as the Hammers climbed
to 12th in the table.
West Ham would finish the season in seventh place, while Lincoln would end
up bottom of the table. As for Wood, he moved to Crystal Palace in 1935,
scoring four goals in ten matches for the Eagles.

Ladies held by Lionesses

West Ham United Ladies were held to a goalless league draw by Millwall
Lionesses on Sunday
10.03.2013
West Ham United Ladies were held to a goalless FA Women's Premier League
Southern Division draw by Millwall Lionesses on Sunday. The Hammers went
into the match knowing victory would close the gap between themselves and
leaders Millwall to just five points - with West Ham also having a game
in-hand on their south London rivals. However, despite creating a succession
of chances at Thurrock FC and forcing the Millwall goalkeeper to make a host
of saves, Julia Setford's team could not find a goal to secure all three
points. At the back, West Ham kept their seventh clean sheet in ten league
matches. The Hammers have conceded just four goals in those ten games and
have by far the best defensive record in the division With eight league
matches still to play, including two against traditional rivals Colchester
United, the Ladies retain a chance of catching Millwall and winning the
title. However, Setford and her players know they need to return to winning
ways when they host Colchester at Ship Lane on Sunday 17 March, when
kick-off will be at 2pm. Supporters can find out more about West Ham Ladies
by watching a special three-part report on the club on West Ham TV. Parts
one and two, covering the Hammers' plan to open an Academy this summer and
the build-up to Sunday's game, are available to view now. Part three, which
looks at the club's hopes for the future and the application the Ladies have
submitted to join the expanded FA Women's Super League next season, will be
available to watch soon.
