Introduction
• West Ham United make a second consecutive trip to the south coast to take
on Brighton & Hove Albion, having gone down to a 1-0 defeat at npower
Championship leaders Southampton last Tuesday evening. The Hammers will be
keen to return to winning ways on their travels, having drawn two and lost
one of their previous three away games after starting the season with three
straight victories.
• The Hammers begun the weekend in second place on 21 points from 12
matches, five points behind leaders Southampton. However, such is the close
nature of the table that West Ham are just three points ahead of 12th placed
Hull City. However, a victory of any margin at the American Express
Community Stadium should keep Sam Allardyce's side in second place, such is
the superiority of their goal difference over third-placed Middlesbrough and
fourth-placed Derby County.
• Brighton & Hove Albion start the weekend in tenth place, having collected
19 points from 12 matches. The Seagulls have drawn their previous two
matches at home to Hull City and at Millwall and have failed to win any of
their previous six league games - seven in all competitions.
• West Ham United will be appearing in a live televised match for the fourth
time this season. Previously, the Hammers have won at Nottingham Forest and
drawn with Leeds United and lost to Cardiff City at the Boleyn Ground in
front of the cameras.
• Both teams are new to the npower Championship this campaign. The Hammers
were relegated from the Premier League while Brighton & Hove Albion romped
to the League One title.
• Monday's visit to the American Express Community Stadium will mark West
Ham United's first trip to the new 22,374-capacity ground, which opened with
the visit of Tottenham Hotspur on 30 July 2011.
• West Ham United's biggest victory at Brighton & Hove Albion was the 2-1
Division Two success achieved on 28 October 1978. Bryan 'Pop' Robson scored
both goals in front of a 32,634-strong crowd at the Goldstone Ground. Peter
Sayer netted the Seagulls' goal.
• Brighton & Hove Albion's biggest home victory over West Ham United came in
the shape of a 3-0 Division Two success at the Goldstone Ground on 16
September 1989. Kevin Bremner, Robert Codner and Garry Nelson scored within
the opening 18 minutes in front of a 12,689-strong crowd.
• Only Kevin Nolan has started every league game for West Ham this season.
He also played in the Carling Cup first round.
• Brighton & Hove Albion strikers Ashley Barnes (seven) and Craig
Mackail-Smith (six) have shared 13 goals between them this season, including
ten in the npower Championship. West Ham United's Sam Baldock has eight in
all competitions, including six for MK Dons.
Team news
West Ham United
• Joey O'Brien and Mark Noble will be eager to return to the starting XI
after impressing as substitutes at Southampton on Tuesday evening.

• Matt Taylor (calf) and James Tomkins (groin) are doubtful. Taylor was
forced off at Southampton on Tuesday evening, while Tomkins did not feature
after being hurt in the victory over Blackpool on Saturday. Henri Lansbury
is definitely out for several weeks with a knee injury.
• Robert Green has been undergoing intensive treatment, including a midweek
trip to a cryogenic chamber.
• Guy Demel is still being treated for a hamstring injury that has delayed
his debut.
• Gary O'Neil (ankle) is out with long-term ankle injury.

Brighton & Hove Albion

from West Bromwich Albion until 2 January 2012.
• Winger Will Buckley has been nursing a hamstring injury suffered in the
Carling Cup defeat by Liverpool on 21 September.
• Long-term absentees Adam El-Abd (foot) and Tommy Elphick (Achilles) have
not featured this season.

Referee
• Monday evening's referee will be Kevin Friend.
• A member of the Select Group of Premier League officials, Friend has taken
control of five top-flight fixtures so far in 2011/12, as well as the npower
Championship fixture between Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United on Friday 14
October.

season and took charge of his first Premier League fixture on 20 September
2009, with Wolverhampton Wanderers beating Fulham 2-1.
• The official has refereed West Ham United just once previously in a
competitive fixture - the goalless Premier League draw with Blackpool at the
Boleyn Ground on 13 November 2010. Friend was also in charge for the SBOBET
Cup victory over Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna on 7 August 2010.

Busy weekend for loanees
WHUFC.com
No fewer than 12 Hammers could feature for their loan clubs this weekend
21.10.2011
While West Ham United's players prepare for Monday's trip to Brighton & Hove
Albion at Chadwell Heath, the club's band of loanees will be in npower
Football League action this weekend. No fewer than 12 Hammers players could
feature for their respective clubs over the next 48 hours, including ten in
the Football League. On Saturday, League Two is the place to be to catch the
club's talented youngsters in action. The Priestfield Stadium is the place
to be to catch a battle between two young strikers as Frank Nouble's
Gillingham take on Rob Hall's Oxford United. Both forwards have been in fine
form for their clubs, with Nouble scoring three goals in six appearances for
the Gills and Hall netting four times in seven games for the U's. Oxford sit
third in the table, but could be overhauled by ninth-placed Gillingham
should the home side prevail. A win for the visitors could take them up to
second.
Swindon Town duo Ahmed Abdulla and Cristian Montano - who scored on his
debut at Accrington Stanley last weekend - will hope to cheer manager Paolo
Di Canio at Plymouth Argyle. Elsewhere, Callum McNaughton's sixth-placed AFC
Wimbledon host fellow League Two new boys and leaders Crawley Town, while
Olly Lee's Dagenham & Redbridge welcome Jordan Brown's Aldershot Town to
Victoria Road. Further up the Football League, Herita Ilunga's Doncaster
Rovers travel to Portsmouth in the Championship on Saturday, while Jordan
Spence will hope to feature when Bristol City take on UEFA Europa League
hopefuls Birmingham City on Sunday afternoon. In League One, Marek Stech's
Yeovil Town head for Stevenage.
Meanwhile, Pablo Barrera and Dominic Vose could also be in action in Spain's
Primera Division and the Blue Square Premier respectively. Barrera's Real
Zaragoza travel to CA Osasuna on Sunday, while Vose and Alan Devonshire's
Braintree Town host Darlington on Saturday.

Big Sam considers options
WHUFC.com
There is plenty to ponder for the manager over Saturday and Sunday ahead of
Brighton on Monday
21.10.2011
Sam Allardyce has his squad in line for a weekend of hard work ahead of the
big trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night. The manager's main task
will be to ensure the Hammers can bounce back on the road as they have on
the two other occasions they have tasted league defeat this season. The
narrow home reverses against Cardiff City and Ipswich Town were followed by
a win at Doncaster Rovers and a draw at Crystal Palace respectively.
Complicating matters is a mounting casualty list, with Big Sam having lost
Matt Taylor (calf) and Henri Lansbury (knee) from the team that lost 1-0 at
Southampton last Tuesday. James Tomkins (groin) and Carlton Cole (knee) also
look unlikely to return, while Robert Green, after his late September knee
surgery, and the yet to figure Guy Demel are also not in contention. It
means Joey O'Brien, Mark Noble, Jack Collison and Freddie Sears could all be
considered for a return to the first eleven.
"Our injury list has escalated in the last couple of games quite
dramatically," said the manager. "From Tuesday, we have got Matt Taylor who
came off and won't be fit for Brighton but the biggest blow is Henri
Lansbury who damaged his knee quite severely."It is not season ending but
certainly a couple of months at the best, we think. That is a great blow for
us on top of the fact we have lost David Bentley [for the season]. James
Tomkins is struggling and so is Carlton Cole."
The manager is ready to look at the loan market again, and is considering
out-of-contract winger El Hadji Diouf who has been pondering his options
since leaving Rangers as a double-winner last season. There are other
possibilities with the manager focused on the need to push for promotion.
"El Hadji is one on our list. We are now scouring the country for what
players might be available for loan or are not fixed up. El Hadji hasn't
been fixed up so I have invited him for training and will have a good look
at him. "I know what he is capable of and that he can deliver. There are
other options we are looking at on loan from other clubs but they are few
and far between now because they have been taken by other clubs. "It is
going to be pretty difficult, but we will have a go at that. Knowing someone
like Dioufy, I just have to let him get fit and see if he looks in good
condition when he trains with us. "If there was anything we were lacking at
Southampton it was the final ball to open up the opposition and allow
goalscoring chances. "We did create opportunities but we didn't produce the
sort of quality we really needed. We are having to test the squad to its
full potential now."
The manager acknowledged that he had ten players out on loan but believed
they were still better off gaining first team experience in the short-term
with all virtually guaranteed 90 minutes every week. He will continue to
gauge his options and is determined that whoever wears the shirt at Brighton
on Monday gives all they can.
"We have really made a massive transition in the football club. We are only
reasonably satisfied with where we are and I know that we are second and
doing OK but I have a greater demand on the players to be more consistent."

West Ham dismiss Carlos Tevez deal but admit Diouf interest
Page last updated at 17:09 GMT, Friday, 21 October 2011 18:09 UK
BBC.co.uk
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce says he will not be signing out-of-favour
Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez. The 27-year-old had been linked with a
return to Upton Park, but Allardyce has now turned his attention to
ex-Blackburn winger El-Hadji Diouf. Allardyce told BBC London 94.9: "I don't
think [the Tevez deal] has got any more potential now. "We've invited
El-Hadji Diouf in for a bit of training to see what level he lies at."
Allardyce added: "[We will see] if he's capable of reproducing the top form
that he's done for me at other clubs." The Hammers boss most recently
managed the 30-year-old Senegal international while at Blackburn, and said
he was not concerned with Diouf's controversial past. "He's got quality and
you can't beat quality in the game of football," the West ham boss said. "We
all know certain players have different sets of baggage, but for me that
quality and outstanding ability mean the baggage is minimal. "He's not
controversial in terms of the Bolton, Blackburn or Rangers fans."
Diouf has been a free agent since leaving Ewood Park in September, and
Allardyce said he would welcome someone of his quality at Upton Park. "He
won the league and the cup with Rangers and got Blackburn to 10th place and
to a semi-final in Carling Cup," Allardyce continued. "And he got Bolton to
Europe for the first time ever. A quality player is a quality player."

Vile, racist filth spotted at Chadwell Heath
KUMB.com
Filed: Friday, 21st October 2011
By: Staff Writer
Serial spitter El Hadji Diouf has been training with West Ham, according to
current United striker John Carew. The Senegalese international - who spat
at away supporters during a Liverpool v West Ham fixture in November 2002 -
was photographed by the Norwegian striker in the dressing rooms this morning
and posted on his Twitter feed. Diouf's mere presence at West Ham has
already caused fury amongst the club's supporters, who would almost
unanimously condemn any attempts by Sam Allardyce to bring the player to
Upton Park. And that scenario - given the recent loss of David Bentley and
Matt Taylor to injury - is a real possibility as Diouf is currently a free
agent having been released by former club Blackburn Rovers in August.
West Ham were previously linked with a move for the 30-year-old in 2007 when
Alan Curbishley was in charge. One supporter who was present at Anfield when
Diouf spat at Hammers fans reacted to todays news by saying: "If he ends up
playing for us I will make my way down the the front of the BML and gladly
spit back at him. Eggert and Curbs - if it is true. forget it now."
And despite a further four years having passed since then, feelings still
run high - as has been revealed today. "I don't boo our players, but I will
make an exception for him," said one fan, posting on the KUMB forums this
morning - whilst another incredulous fan added, "Please say we're not going
to stoop that low - are we?"
El Hadji Diouf, posted by John Carew on his Twitter feed this morning with
the message "can u peeps guesss who showed up for training today?" Diouf has
a long history of anti-social behaviour, beginning with the time he spat at
Hammers fans whilst warming up on the sidelines during that Premiership
clash with Liverpool, who brought the player to England.
Having got off the hook on that occasion due to the failure of Merseyside
Police to act, just four months later he was caught on camera spitting at
Celtic fans during a televised UEFA Cup game - an offence for which he
received a two-match ban and £5,000 fine.
As if he couldn't stoop any lower, a year later in 2004 he was accused of
spitting at an 11-year-old Middlesbrough supporter whilst on loan at Bolton
- shortly before he received another ban for spitting in the face of
then-Portsmough player Arjan de Zeeuw.
Having managed to keep out of the spotlight for several years - ironically
whilst working under Sam Allardyce at Bolton - Diouf was questioned by
Police on 2009 regarding alleged racist remarks he made towards a ball-boy,
to whom he reportedly said, "f*** off, white boy".
2010 failed to see the notorious African out of the spotlight; after being
charged by Police with motoring offences he was later accused by Neil
Warnock of mocking one of his players who has sustained a broken leg.
As recently as March this year, Diouf received a £5,000 fine from the
Scottish FA for being one of three players sent off in an auld firm derby.
He was also the victim of a prank call in 2009 during which he threatened to
rape the caller's mother and children.

Spurs deny stadium complaint
Club hit back at rumours of European Commission approach
Last Updated: October 21, 2011 5:50pm
SSN
Tottenham insist they were not behind the mystery complaint to the European
Commission which was blamed for the collapse of West Ham's bid to move to
the Olympic Stadium. The Hammers beat Spurs for the right to move into the
London 2012 showpiece, but the North London club challenged the Olympic Park
Legacy Company's (OPLC) decision in the courts and the deal fell through 10
days ago. An anonymous complaint to the European Commission about the role
of Newham Council's £40million loan in West Ham's bid is understood to be
part of the reason why the agreement with the Hammers collapsed. It has been
rumoured that Spurs were behind that complaint, but the club have hit back
at those suggestions. A spokeswoman said: "It was not us and it was not
(rival bidder) Leyton Orient.
"The reason it wasn't us was because it would be totally illogical for us to
go to a European court at a time when we were engaged in a legal process in
the UK."

Is El Hadji Diouf Our Next Signing?
October 21st, 2011 - 2:16 pm by Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die
Be afraid. Very Afraid. John Carew tweeted earlier this morning…
@JCarew10 Now can u peeps guesss who showed up for training today ?
And then he included THIS picture. It is clearly El Hadji Diouf. Or is it? I
have already made clear my reaction to having this thug at our club. Not all
of you agreed with what I wrote a couple of months ago HERE, but I wonder if
your feelings are still the same now. I certainly haven't changed my mind.
UPDATE: Sam Allardyce has confirmed he wants to sign Diouf.

El Hadji-Diouf set to kickstart his career at West Ham
By PAT SHEEHAN

SAM ALLARDYCE is set to give bad-boy El-Hadji Diouf a new career. The West
Ham boss believes the ex-Blackburn and Bolton striker could be the missing
link in their push for a straight return to the Premier League. Diouf, 30,
will have to prove his fitness over the next two weeks before Big Sam gives
him a contract until the end of the season. Allardyce said: "There is
something missing from our squad and Diouf could be that missing link. "He
has played for two of my teams before so I know exactly what kind of quality
I will be getting."

Instead of closing his eyes and taking one in the goolies for the good of

INTERESTING one Argy can't wait to quit England while another says he wants
to stay for a long time. When Newcastle were relegated, Fabricio Coloccini
was the butt of Geordie humour and I'm certain Mike Ashley would have sold
him for the price of my copy of Sting singing the Blaydon Races. While
Carlos Tevez whined about his fate as a displaced person, Coloccini battled
on and, as we see in the draw with Spurs, he is forming a decent defensive
partnership with Steve Taylor. By the way, isn't Alan Pardew doing well?

THERE are smoke signals that a number of foreign owners of Premier League
clubs would rather like it if there were no relegation or at least fewer
clubs going down.
Our competitions need this idea like I need a dead rat in the kitchen. It
stinks. The whole essence of our football, the reason why 30,000 fans turned
up at three different non-Prem grounds including Upton Park at the weekend,
is the free flow between divisions. It's about dreams and ambitions and not
only among the lower-league clubs. What the heck would the Prem be like if
six teams fought for the title while the other 14 played pat-a-cake.
Avoiding relegation is as much of a thrill as most of them get these days.

THAT exasperating — and little bit delightful — character Mido is having a
week's holiday at the expense of the as-yet-to-be-formed Egyptian
government. The half-season Hammers striker and a mate took offence at
something three students said in Cairo and waded into them. At the Boleyn,
Mido offered to play for £1 a week to prove himself, not the usual kind of
rate for a 50-times capped international. But, regrettably, he failed to
live up to his wage and was moved on. I suspect he's going to go down as one
of those footballers with all the skill in the world but without the nous to
go with it. He's also the kind of man you can't forget.

judge indicated in court Orient didn't add anything at all to that claim.
Harlow Hearn bid to have his own costs paid back to him in the Olympic
Stadium set-to but was told not only to cough up but also to pay Newham

WITH so many injuries I am calling around and texting for a 'real' emergency

get replies with many options that I forward to Sam Allardyce. The e-mail

managers who simply replied 'Sorry Karren. I don't have a sausage'. Poor
unfortunate man!

WHO will Carlos Tevez be cheering in the Manchester showpiece? The team he
quit for money or the team he quit out of temper. I know one thing, short of
the Wolfman zombie, Tevez is the last man fans wish to see on Sunday. One
bookmaker has parked skips at the ground for discarded Tevez shirts in red
or blue to be recycled. I'm thinking of sending the over-sized claret and
blue Benni McCarthy version to join them.

Big Sam: Diouf would be Hammers hit
Published 08:01 22/10/11 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror
Sam Allardyce believes West Ham fans will love controversial El Hadji Diouf
if he secures a contract with their club. The former Liverpool striker is
training with the Hammers after being released by Blackburn and could be
offered a permanent deal. The Hammers have an injury crisis, with on-loan
Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury the latest victim, suffering knee ligament
damage. Allardyce, who worked with Diouf at Bolton and Blackburn, believes
he can get the best out of him.
When asked how East Enders would react to the Senegalese international, Big
Sam said: "As most of the fans have taken to him everywhere else he's been
– they'll love him. "Dioufy is a quality player who West Ham fans will
appreciate if they see him."

Allardyce set for Diouf reunion
Saturday, 22 October 2011
The Independent
It appears West Ham manager Sam Allardyce may be about to complete the
signing of striker El Hadj Diouf – for the third time. Hammers forward John
Carew seemed to give the game away yesterday when he posted the above
picture – which appears to show Diouf at the club's Chadwell Heath training
ground – on Twitter, along with the comment: "Now can u peeps guess who
showed up for training today? :D". In the summer, Diouf, who was released by
Blackburn, said he would indeed be delighted to reacquaint himself with
Allardyce. "Working with Sam? That would be a fantastic thing to do," he
said. "I would be delighted to work under him again."
