Boa Morte matter resolved
WHUFC.com
The club can confirm that amicable talks have taken place between Luis Boa
Morte and the Chairman
10.05.2010

Luis Boa Morte has held clear-the-air talks with Chairman David Sullivan
over negative comments the player gave to the BBC after the Manchester City
match. Boa Morte spoke to the Match of the Day programme after scoring in
the 1-1 draw on Sunday, having missed the whole season until then with a
knee injury. The midfielder has since called Mr Sullivan to apologise for
his outburst and the club is pleased to say the matter has been amicably
resolved. Mr Sullivan said: "I greatly admire Luis as a player and he takes
the passion he shows on the pitch into his personal life. Like me
occasionally it boils over - so I know exactly where he is coming from."
After the cordial conversation on Monday, both the player and the Chairman
agreed to put the matter behind them and move forward together in the best
interests of West Ham United. The talks included the recognition the
comments were based on a total misunderstanding of events and came straight
after a match when emotions are high.

Upson says 'thank you'
WHUFC.com
The skipper has said thanks to the supporters for their loyal backing during
a tough season
10.05.2010

All of you who have followed us this season deserve the spotlight. Even when
things have not gone so well, the fans have always been there home and away.
None of us take that for granted and there have been many games when we have
been in awe of the support. This season has had its difficulties but I am
pleased that, although we have not had too much to shout about, we have been
able to secure this club's place in the Barclays Premier League. Despite the
many problems, we have stuck together as a squad and, with strong support
from the manager and his staff, kept on going. Aside from it being a
turbulent season with lots of changes and speculation, there has been the
general pressure of representing West Ham United and what is expected from
us every time we play. I have always said I would rather play for a club
that makes such demands. You know you can never take it is easy and I enjoy
that. It was a great honour when the manager named me as the new captain at
the start of the season. I am grateful to him and it has been a privilege to
lead the team out and follow in the footsteps of some of the club's most
illustrious names. It is something that means a lot to me personally and I
have treated the job with full respect. There have been positives to take
away from the season, especially the way no one has hidden from the
challenge and how we have coped with the pressure. I am sure this club will
come out of this in a healthier state and can look ahead to better things.
Morale is good and there is a determination at Chadwell Heath to improve.

Cup memories still strong
WHUFC.com
Phil Parkes and Alan Devonshire remember the FA Cup victory over Arsenal
exactly 30 years ago
10.05.2010

Monday 10 May marks the 30th anniversary of one of the finest days in the
history of West Ham United. The Hammers, then in Division Two, went into the
1980 FA Cup final as massive underdogs to holders Arsenal, but it would be a
day of surprises. England midfielder Trevor Brooking stooped low to head
Stuart Pearson's cross-shot past Pat Jennings after 13 minutes to send the
thousands of claret and blue-clad supporters into a state of ecstasy. Later,
Billy Bonds climbed the 39 steps at Wembley to lift the FA Cup for the
second time in six seasons - it was the third time in 16 years that the
Hammers had won the world's most famous knockout competition. Exactly three
decades later, two of the heroes of that afternoon - goalkeeper Phil Parkes
and winger Alan Devonshire - say the memories of one of the biggest days of
their careers are as bright as ever. The duo were among team-mates at this
month's End of Season Awards Dinner to be honoured for their achievement.
"They are great memories," said Parkes, who had joined West Ham for a
world-record £565,000 the previous summer. "The thing I always remember is
Billy Bonds coming up to me and saying, as he'd been there before in 1975,
that I should try to savour every moment of the day. Obviously going to
Wembley on the Friday night and bringing the cup back through the East End
was something special. "I didn't really have much to do that afternoon -
maybe just a couple of saves. I remember one from a curling shot from Graham
Rix in the first half that maybe was curling just inside the far post. You
never know where it was going, but I managed to tip it around the post to
make sure. "In the second half, Brian Talbot then had a free-kick from
outside the box that wasn't spectacular but it was one that I had to hold
otherwise someone might have come in and tapped it in. Other than a few
crosses, that was all I had to do. "Tactically, we just bamboozled them.
John Lyall changed the tactics and put Stewart Pearson the hole behind David
Cross and Crossy just occupied them all afternoon. "They talk about the
managerial duo of Terry Neill and Don Howe to this day, but they never ever
sussed it out. If they'd pushed their two full-backs on, they could have
caused us all kinds of problems, but they never did and the rest is history.
"Every West Ham fan hoped we would win against a very good Arsenal side, but
we were so confident that we had that belief that we were going to win. "We
had an outstanding team and, the next season, we nearly won every game and
were promoted from Division Two with a record number of points. We scored so
many goals and kept so many clean sheets - it was just a fantastic side."
Midfielder Devonshire provided the left-wing cross that, following a
goalmouth melee, led to Brooking's match-winner. The mercurial wideman said
the Hammers had gone into the final feeling confident and relaxed following
a Friday night out at Wembley greyhound track. "It was fantastic. I was
lucky enough that we had some really good times and a really good team at
West Ham. The final was a great day. It was a dream come true - every player
wants to play in a cup final. "We had been to Wembley dogs on the Friday
night. A few of the boys stayed at the hotel, but the rest of us went and
had a relaxing time ahead of the final the following day. "I remember the
final itself was a very hot day. We were the underdogs and I remember
walking around the pitch before the game and the Arsenal players looked
quite tense - you could see it in their faces. We were more relaxed and, as
a team, we were confident of getting the right result after beating Everton
in the semi-final. It just snowballed from there and was a fantastic day.
"The ball ricocheted about a bit and in the end Trevor has got his head on
it and it's in the net. The game probably wasn't the best, probably because
it was so hot and humid on the pitch, but 30 years on, it's still like
yesterday. "I think our name was on the cup in the third round when we had
to play away to West Brom. We got battered and the big fella was absolutely
unbelievable - Cyrille Regis went clean through and he saved it. We got them
back here and beat them and, from then on, we didn't fear anyone. Even
though we were a Second Division side, we had very good players. "I remember
the night before, we went to the dogs and I won £40 for Parkesy! He gave me
some money and, luckily enough, the dog came in. That was a lot of money in
those days - about a week's wages!"

Gianfranco Zola to discuss West Ham future with owners
BBC.co.uk

Gianfranco Zola will meet West Ham's owners on Tuesday to discuss whether he
has a future as the club's manager. Zola's position has been the subject of
speculation since owners David Gold and David Sullivan took over in January.
"We will have a long and interesting chat," said Zola. "It's been a tiring
and exhausting season for us." Meanwhile, winger Luis Boa Morte has held
clear-the-air talks with Sullivan after criticising the co-owner on Sunday's
Match of the Day. In March, Sullivan lambasted the squad in an open letter
to supporters, a move which disappointed Boa Morte, who is out of contract
and expects to leave the club this summer. "Mr Sullivan should have a bit
more composure when he talks to the press to hammer the players, it's not
helping anyone," said Boa Morte, who scored on his return for the Hammers in
Sunday's 1-1 draw with Manchester City. "The fact you have money doesn't
mean you can say and do whatever you want."
In a statement on West Ham's website, the club said Boa Morte had called
Sullivan on Monday to apologise for his comments, and that the matter was
now resolved. "I greatly admire Luis as a player and he takes the passion he
shows on the pitch into his personal life," said Sullivan. "Like me
occasionally it boils over - so I know exactly where he is coming from."
Writing in Sunday's programme notes, Sullivan announced that the club will
look to make "five or six" signings over the summer in a bid to avoid a
repeat of this season, which has seen the east Londoners finish only five
points above the relegation zone. And the Hammers' co-owner was again
critical of Zola. "The current management and team know that what they have
delivered was below the expectations at the start of the season and we
simply have to do better next season," Sullivan wrote. "I really believe
that the Premier League in the 2010-11 campaign will be stronger than in the
season that has just finished, so let's not underestimate the task we all
face. "When you choose to spend your money at your club it is right you want
something back."
Whether Zola, who has three years to run on a contract he only signed last
summer, will lead the Hammers next season could also be down to the
Italian's desire to stay in charge. "All of the staff have been under a lot
of pressure," said Zola, who most recently claimed he was not told the club
would be making a bid for West Bromwich Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans.
"We wanted to give something different but circumstances, mistakes and other
things didn't allow us to do that, to give to the team what we wanted to
give. "There were moments when it was tough for us. "I enjoyed it last year,
very much, this year a little bit less. "It was only my second year as a
manager and you take in everything. I need to get used to it. I know where
the faults and mistakes lie. I will be working on them."
Sullivan and fellow owner David Gold injected £20m to save West Ham from
administration when they bought half of the club from Icelandic bank
Straumur in January, and the pair are in the process of increasing their
stake by 10% to 60%. And Sullivan has suggested that fans may be given the
chance to buy shares, with money raised used to pay off debt and sign
players. "We are confident that over the coming years we'll deliver a side
that gives our great supporters what they deserve," wrote Sullivan in his
programme notes. Key to improvement will be investing in the squad and
Sullivan stressed that funds will be available. "Every penny raised would be
used to pay off debts and buy new players," added the West Ham co-owner. "We
are in the process of increasing our ownership by buying another 10% from
Straumur. This will inject a further £4m in to help cover the shortfalls in
the finances over the summer. "We hope to find other investors who want to
buy some of the club and thereby inject further funds. "In a few months'
time we are considering a general shareholding where supporters can buy
shares in the football club."

Boa Morte says sorry to owner
Winger phones chairman following criticism after City game
Last updated: 10th May 2010
SSN

Luis Boa Morte has apologised to David Sullivan following his criticism of
the West Ham United chairman at the weekend. Portuguese winger Boa Morte
expressed his unhappiness with Sullivan on Sunday following the 1-1 draw
with Manchester City in the final game of the Premier League season. Boa
Morte called on Sullivan to show 'a bit more composure' following the West
Ham co-owner's recent public criticism of the players after a poor season at
Upton Park. However, the 32-year-old has now phoned Sullivan to apologise
for his outburst and the conversation, according to West Ham, was "cordial".
The club also reported that Boa Morte accepted his comments had been based
on a "misunderstanding of the facts" and in a moment of high emotion.
Sullivan said: "I greatly admire Luis as a player and he takes the passion
he shows on the pitch into his personal life. "Like me occasionally it boils
over - so I know exactly where he is coming from."
Boa Morte's appearance against City was his first of the season and he
marked his comeback from a knee injury with the Hammers' goal. But the game
is likely to be the former Fulham man's last for West Ham as he is not
expected to be offered an extension to his contract which expires in the
summer.

Boa Morte to leave Hammers
Winger happy to bow out on a high
Last updated: 10th May 2010

Luis Boa Morte has confirmed he is set to leave West Ham this summer when
his current deal expires. The Portugal international, who scored in Sunday's
1-1 draw with Manchester City in the final game of the campaign, is out of
contract in the summer. Boa Morte made his first league appearance of the
season at the weekend after a serious knee injury and he was delighted to
end his stay at Upton Park with a goal. "It was a good experience to get a
good reception. This was my last game as well, so thanks to everyone," Boa
Morte told the club's official website. "I have had some hard times with the
West Ham supporters but that's just football. I kept working and never
turned my face away - that's the way to be in football, and I'm happy to be
like that."

Davids will be Franc with Zola
The Sun
By ANDREW DILLON
Published: Today

GIANFRANCO ZOLA faces crunch talks with West Ham's owners today as he
battles to keep his job. Co-chairmen David Gold and David Sullivan will
grill the Italian over the poor performance of the squad, which includes
England's Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole. The Hammers
finished 17th - just five points above the drop zone and Sullivan believed
there was a lack of battling spirit. Ex-West Ham defender Slaven Bilic and
former England boss Steve McClaren have been linked with the hot-seat.

Green sick and tired of 'strange stuff' at West Ham
Published 23:00 10/05/10 By Neil McLeman
The Mirror

Robert Green has joined the player revolt against the West Ham owners by
accusing the two Davids - Sullivan and Gold - of saying "a whole lot of
strange stuff" this season.
Sullivan labelled the performance against Wolves in March as "pathetic" and
was again critical in his programme notes before the final game against
Manchester City. Manager Gianfranco Zola is set to leave the club today when
he meets Sullivan and Gold. And England No.1 Green, who could be sold after
the World Cup, could follow him out of the door. "I don't know what's gone
on," said the 30-year-old. "There seems to have been a whole lot of strange
stuff that's been said. But on the whole that's for them to decide.
"The two people in charge have said enough and I'll leave them to do the
talking. I read what you read. "I've never spoken to them. Well, I've never
spoken to half of them (one of them), and I've certainly never spoken to
them about my future. But if you take what they say, then read what you want
into it. "I'd like to see a lot of the question marks cleared up. I'm sure
the two chairmen will take the chance now to decide where they want to take
the club, and who that may involve. "There's been a lot of talk, a lot of
speculation and I'm sure come pre-season things will be a lot clearer.
That's down to them."
Green, who has been at Upton Park since 2006, has two years left on his
contract. "I just focus on playing in goal," he insisted. "Do I want to be
here next season? Of course.
"I've always stated that I'm a happy Hammer. I want to be here and not
fighting relegation. I want to go forward with the club. "I've given no
thought to leaving whatsoever. I've hopefully got the World Cup coming up."

West Ham turn to Mallorca coach in shock new move - Exclusive
Published 23:00 10/05/10 By James Nursey
The Mirror

Real Mallorca manager Gregorio Manzano is the surprise new candidate to
replace Gianfranco Zola at West Ham. Zola has a crunch summit meeting at
Upton Park at midday today with joint-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold
to determine his future. And the Italian, in charge since September 2008, is
expected to leave West Ham, whose debts are £90million. The cash-strapped
Hammers' hierarchy are hoping Zola quits to save them compensation after
they finished 17th. Sullivan is already considering potential candidates to
replace Zola - including Mallorca coach Manzano. He replaces Steve McClaren
on West Ham's short-list as the FC Twente boss is expected to take over at
German club Wolfsburg. Other names in the frame for West Ham include
Portsmouth manager Avram Grant, Ajax boss Martin Jol and Croatia chief
Slaven Bilic. Experienced Manzano, 54, has had a superb season in Spain
guiding Mallorca to fifth in La Liga. Manzano is respected on the continent
after coaching Toledo, Valladolid, Racing Santander, Rayo Vallecano,
Atletico Madrid and Malaga. He was voted Spain's coach of the year in 2008
in his second spell with Mallorca.

Gianfranco Zola's time is up! Glum West Ham boss is hauled in to hammer out
pay-off
EXCLUSIVE By John Edwards Last updated at 1:35 AM on 11th May 2010
Daily Mail

West Ham will today begin the process of removing Gianfranco Zola from his
post, after recording the lowest points total in their Premier League
history. The manager has been called to Upton Park for talks with co-owners
David Sullivan and David Gold, along with deputy chairman Karren Brady.
Steve Clarke, Zola's No 2, will also be present. As revealed by Sportsmail,
Zola will be replaced and the two sides will attempt a 'mutual agreement'
termination of his three-year contract, worth £1.9million a year. Zola will
claim he is entitled to £6m in compensation, but West Ham will offer closer
to £1m. Legal representatives should be present as they attempt to thrash
out what sources describe as a 'speedy and amicable agreement'. Zola
complained after the 1-1 draw with Manchester City that he has not been
'enjoying the job' and his relationship with the new owners has been
fractious. They, in turn, doubt the manager has the ability to improve a
squad in need of a huge overhaul. Clarke, who is paid £1.2m a year - more
than twice the salary of Sir Alex Ferguson's No 2 Mike Phelan - may be able
to keep his job, but only if he accepts a salary cut. An announcement is
expected to follow today's talks as Sullivan and Gold look to stamp their
mark on the club they bought for £50m. They have been shocked at the
salaries and bonuses but none more so than the deals thrashed out for Zola
and Clarke, who were awarded bumper new contracts by the former Icelandic
owners, costing the club almost £10m. Club sources complain that training
and set-piece defensive work has been 'unsatisfactory' and West Ham's dismal
run of only two wins in their last 12 games saw the club finish 17th, only
one place above a weak bottom three. While Zola retains the support of
senior players, Sullivan, Gold and Brady will act swiftly. They will then
appoint their own man, with former West Ham defender Slaven Bilic,
ex-England coach Glenn Hoddle and Paulo Sousa, Swansea's talented boss,
under consideration. However, they will cast their net far and wide to
ensure they get the best man at the right price. It is thought Upton Park
legend Alvin Martin will be part of a new-look coaching staff. Sullivan was
persuaded not to sack Zola twice earlier in the season. He decided to stand
by his manager in the hope that the board's backing would allow him to
escape relegation and avert a financial catastrophe that would have followed
had the club found themselves in the Championship. Now they want a manager
capable of working the transfer market and bringing in good signings to
improve an 'imbalanced' squad.
In another twist, Luis Boa Morte, who scored against City on Sunday,
apologised to Sullivan yesterday after his attack on the owner during Match
of the Day. The winger faced a two-week fine of £130,000 but will now avoid
disciplinary action after his apology was accepted. During his attack, he
said: 'Mr Sullivan should have a bit more composure when he goes to the
press to hammer the players. The fact you have the money doesn't mean you
can do what you want.' Without the injection of cash from Sullivan and Gold,
some salaries may not have been paid and West Ham were even looking at
administration earlier this season, with a players' weekly wage bill of more
than £700,000.
