West Ham United 4-3 West Bromwich Albion

Freddie Sears struck all four goals as West Ham United edged a seven-goal
thriller in Barclays Premier Reserve League action on Tuesday night.

Before his late winner, the 18-year-old striker equalised three times
against a lively West Bromwich Albion team that more than contributed to a
hugely entertaining evening at a chilly Woodside Park. The night was also
notable for the return of captain James Collins, for his first competitive
match since suffering a knee injury in a January reserve outing, and Lee
Bowyer, who had not played since the Carling Cup second round last month.

Sebastian Lake-Gaskin put the visitors in front on 19 minutes with a
deflected shot but Sears struck for the first time just after the half-hour
mark. Bartosz Slusarski then restored the advantage for West Brom from the
penalty spot after Collins was harshly deemed to have fouled the No9 before
Sears tapped in a quickfire equaliser when a firm Bowyer shot was spilled.
Lateef Alliyu added a long-range third for the visitors just before the
interval.

The second half continued in the same lively fashion with Jack Collison,
himself back after a knee problem, his usual marauding self in midfield.
Sears finally got his treble just before the hour when the referee pointed
to the spot after a handball. Sears stepped up and made no mistake. He could
have had a fourth soon afterwards only to fire over when well-placed to the
right of goal. Sears then set Junior Stanislas away but this time the post
saved the visitors.

After a solid 70 minutes, coach Alex Dyer had sent on Bondz N'Gala and
Balint Bajner - making his reserve-team debut - for Collins and Bowyer.
Meanwhile, Sears kept going and struck a last-gasp winner after Walter
Lopez's flicked header was not cleared by the visiting defence.

Along with Sears, the return of Collins and Bowyer with all-action displays
will have given the watching Gianfranco Zola, Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen
plenty of food for thought on a night that also saw several of the club's
younger players in attendance. Among them were Zavon Hines, who is a couple
of weeks away from a return to training after a knee injury in a practice
match on 9 September. Meanwhile, James Tomkins is back in full training
after his own knee problems.

Reserves 4-3 West Brom FT - WHUFC
All the action as it happened as West Ham United reserves beat West Brom
reserves on Tuesday
30.09.2008

Barclays Premier Reserve League South
Woodside Park
Kick-off: 7pm

Final score: West Ham United 4-3 West Bromwich Albion

90 mins - And it's all over. A fantastic game of football that was lit up by
Freddie Sears' four goals

89 mins - GOAL! And surely the winner! Sears tries another great run down
the right and wins the corner. After an almighty scramble following Lopez's
header, the ball falls to Sears and he makes no mistake from five yards

85 mins - Lopez and Stech combine to clear at one end as Reid tries a curler
from 25 yards that is just over at the other

82 mins - The game deserves a winner and the home side look the more likely
to get it as a Sears cross is headed wide by Bajner

80 mins - United win a corner after a mis-placed back pass. Stanislas
crosses but it's cleared. The ball comes back to Sears who darts into the
box and drives the ball along the six yard box, but no claret and blue
shirts are near

76 mins - And we so nearly do! A great run and pass by Sears gives Stanislas
a shooting opportunity. His right footed drive from an angle rattles the
West Prom post

75 mins - Are we going to get a winner? After an all-action first half the
teams are pushing for a fourth and probably decisive goal

71 mins - West Brom make two more changes. Jamal Clarke comes on for Dwayne
Samuels and Kayleden Brown takes the place of Slusarski

69 mins - Alex Dyer makes his first changes of the night, bringing Balint
Bajner and Bondz N'Gala on for James Collins and Lee Bowyer. It was a good
workout for the returning duo

66 mins - Another dangerous looking free kick on the edge of the area is
hacked clear by Collins

64 mins - Romaine Sawyers comes on for Teixeira. Sears has a chace for
number four after a great run and cross by Lopez but he puts his shot way
over

61 mins - Stech comes out to palm a West Brom corner to safety

58 mins - GOAL! Sears completes his hat-trick from the penalty spot after
the referee blows for a handball, sending the keeper the wrong way. It has
been an impressive performance from the No10

55 mins - Stokes hits a first time left-footed shot from the edge of the
area that flies past the far post

52 mins - A free-kick is awarded to West Brom on the edge of the area as
some strong tackles fly in from both sides. Teixeira fires high and wide

50 mins - Brilliant play by Collison. He bursts forward from his own half,
beats two men then exchanges passes with Stokes before hitting a firm drive
that is saved

48 mins - The visitors get the ball clear after a scramble in the area as
United start the second half on the front foot

47 mins - West Brom get us under way in the second half

46 mins - It has been entertaining stuff in the first half with both teams
playing some attacking football, but it is West Brom that go in ahead at the
break

44 mins - Goal! Lateef Alliyu puts the visitors back in front for the third
time as he curls a great shot past Stech from the edge of the area

42 mins - Goal! The home side hit back instantly as from another corner
Bowyer's low shot is blocked but Sears reacts quickest to fire home from six
yards

39 mins - Goal! The referee gives a hotly contested penalty as Collins
appeared to win the ball with a tackle on Bartosz Slusarski. The No9 stepped
up to fire into the left hand corner

35 mins - There is a strong turn out from the first team management on a
chilly night at Woodside Park. Gianfranco Zola, Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen
are all here and the players seem eager to impress

34 mins - Lee Bowyer shows some neat close control, juggling the ball
several times to turn away from danger

31 mins - Goal! Freddie Sears gets West Ham United back on level terms. The
18-year-old seized on a defensive mix-up to finish smartly with his left
foot from eight yards

28 mins- Collins looks hungry on his return, throwing himself in front of
several shots

26 mins - Reid is fouled and from the resulting free-kick Collison forces a
save from Ryan Allsop in the West Brom goal

24 mins - Bowyer has United's first shot on goal. It is deflected wide for a
corner. Davenport wins another header put it goes inches wide

20 mins - Sears wins a flick on for Stokes to chase

19 mins - GOAL! West Bromwich take the lead as Sebastian Lake-Gaskin's shot
is cruelly deflected past Stech

17 mins - Collins sprays a 70 yard pass that drops to the feet of Stanislas.
His dangerous cross is cleared for a corner. Stanislas takes it and
Davenport heads over

16 mins - Collins, who is captaining the side tonight, shows some quick feet

Red-hot Fred too good for Baggies - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 30th September 2008
By: Staff Writer

Freddie Sears was the star of the show as West Ham United's reserves beat
West Bromwich Albion in a seven-goal thriller at Bishops Stortford tonight.
Sears struck all four United goals in a 4-3 win at Woodside Park - the last
of which came in the dying seconds to win all three points for the Hammers.
The young striker had looked out of sorts for the first team at Watford last
week but once again discovered his predatory instinct to the chagrin of the
visitors, who led three times on the night before finally succumbing. The
gloriously-named Sebastian Lake-Gaskin put the visitors ahead on 19 minutes
before Sears opened his account for the night 12 minutes later. Bartosz
Slusarski restored West Brom's lead from the penalty spot a few moments
after that before Sears restored parity from close range. The half ended
with the Baggies 3-2 up when Lateef Alliyu scored possibly the best goal of
the night from outside the area. But just 15 minutes into the second period
Sears made it 3-3 from the penalty spot to complete his hat-trick. With the
seconds ticking away Sears won the game for the Hammers when he took
advantage of a poor clearance to fire home from just inside the area. With
Lee Bowyer and James Collins making their comebacks from injury and young
striker Balint Bajner making his reserve team debut it was a good night all
round for United, who recorded their first points of the season having beeen
defeated 2-0 at Chelsea in their opening Premier Reserve League (South)
fixture.

Four Goal Freddy Has Franco Smiling - WestHamFans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 1 October, 2008 - 07:26.

It might have been cold and windy at Woodside Park but Gianfranco Zola and
Steve Clarke hardly seemed to notice as they watched young West Ham starlet
Freddy Sears thump home four goals in an epic but scrappy reserve fixture
against a robust West Bromwich side. Of equal importance was the return of
James Collins, who played over 70 minutes, and Jack Collison, but it was
Sears who caught the eye! The young Hammer has recently been subject to
gutter press stories that he would be off to Arsenal in the new year..on the
strength of this performance that would appear to be highly unlikely. Other
youngsters made their debuts in front of the management team which included
recently promoted Kevin Keen and did not disappoint. So maybe this is the
style that Zola wants to adopt, you score three, we'll score four! Another
former player, Ossie Ardiles, tried this approach when he first went in to
management and it ended in tears, but with Clarkey around to limit any
excess there is a possibility that it might work and that fans will
eventually be able to see the type of free flowing football that was once
the hallmark of a Hammers team.-Ed Final score WHU 4 v 3 WBA...... Stech,
Miller, Collins, Davenport, Lopez, Stanislas, Collison, Bowyer, Reid,
Stokes, Sears. Subs used: N'Gala, Bajner

Hammers striker delighted with four-goal display - Echo
8:06am Wednesday 1st October 2008

WEST Ham United striker Freddie Sears was all smiles after bagging all four
goals in Tuesday's 4-3 Barclays Premier Reserve League South win over West
Bromwich Albion. The 19-year-old hitman equalised three times for the
Hammers before netting an 89th minute winner in front of first-team manager
Gianfranco Zola at Bishop's Stortford. Sears was on fire in front of goal,
scoring twice in each half as Alex Dyer's second-string recorded their first
victory of the season. Afterwards, the Hornchurch-based forward had the
match-ball signed by his team-mates before speaking about his performance.
"To win the game and score four, you can't do much more than that," he said.
"I thought we did really well. We dug in after we went behind three times
and showed good spirit and always believed we could get back in it. "It was
a kick in the teeth each time we went behind, but we kept coming back. "Two
of the goals were alright, the third was a poacher-style goal and the other
one was a penalty. When you're in those positions you've got to look to
score, so it's all good. "It's my first hat-trick for the reserves, which is
great."
The striker also dismissed internet speculation linking him with a move to
cross-London rivals Arsenal. "I haven't heard anything about that. That's
just rubbish," he added. Tuesday's match was watched by West Ham's
powers-that-be, with Zola joined in the stands by first-team coaches Steve
Clarke and Kevin Keen, technical director Gianluca Nani and goalkeeping
coach Ludek Miklosko. All five will have been immensely impressed with
Sears' undoubted poaching skills, along with the composure he showed in
netting a penalty to level the scores at 3-3 midway through the second half.

You're dropped: Former West Ham star Ian Pearce falls 11 leagues - The
Mirror
By Greig Box Turnbull 1/10/2008

Last season Ian Pearce was mixing it with the Premier League's superstars.
Now he pays to turn out for a village team – but gets a discount for being
unemployed.
The defender, 34, who was in the top flight with Fulham until May, has
dropped 11 divisions to keep playing. He was given a free transfer after
injury problems and has joined Oxted & District FC. It is a far cry from his
title-winning days at Blackburn alongside Alan Shearer in 1995 – and the
time West Ham splashed out £3.5million to sign the tough tackler. The
multi-millionaire began at Oxted and now pays £2.50 match subs in the Surrey
South Eastern Combination First Division – after his 50 per cent jobless
reduction. He scored on his debut on Saturday as Oxted beat Westminster
Casuals 4-1 in front of a record crowd of 150. Joint Manager Peter Green
said: "I'm still pinching myself that he's signed for us. "But he's just one
of the lads and we're chuffed to have him around. "He has come home to
finish his playing days where it all started."
Ian Pearce began his pro career at Chelsea before helping Blackburn Rovers
win the Premiership in 1995. Moves to West Ham and Fulham were marred by
injuries but he still racked up more than 200 top-flight games.

West Ham United poised to enter Appiah race - FansFC.com
06:28 October, 1, 2008

West Ham United Football Club are set to make an offer to Stephen Appiah.
The Ghanaian international is available on a free transfer after his release
from Turkish side Fenerbahce, and he has made no secret of his desire to
play in the Premier League. "I would like to play in the Premier League, but
I don't know," Appiah told skysports.com. "I am still training. I am keeping
my body in shape and I am ready for action. I will find a new club very
soon." The 27-year-old has been linked with Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers and
Portsmouth in the past, but latest reports suggest the Hammers have emerged
as favourites for his signature.

Ashton out until March
Staff and agencies The Guardian, Wednesday October 1 2008 Article history

Dean Ashton looks set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines. New West
Ham manager Gianfranco Zola will be without leading striker Dean Ashton for
the majority of the season, after the England international was told last
night that he would not play again until March at the earliest. Zola had
hoped Ashton would be fit by January but following surgery on his left ankle
yesterday, the 24-year-old, injured in Zola's first training session, is
unlikely to make an impression this season. The news will represent a blow
for Ashton, who had regained his fitness after a previous lengthy ankle
injury suffered on England duty in 2006. He returned to action last season
after a year out, and despite clearly suffering the after-effects of his
injury, was still West Ham's top scorer. Ashton's form earned him a call-up
to Fabio Capello's England squad for the friendlies against Trinidad and
Tobago and the USA, where he failed to impress. However, he started this
campaign in eye-catching form, scoring twice in West Ham's opening match
against Wigan, but his injury curse appears to have struck again.

Four-star Sears impresses in front of new boss Zola - Echo
10:50pm Tuesday 30th September 2008
By Rob Pritchard »

FREDDIE Sears gave Gianfranco Zola a reminder of his goalscoring prowess
with all four goals in West Ham United's thrilling 4-3 Barclays Premier
Reserve League South win over West Bromwich Albion last night. The England
Under-19 international, who has not started either of the two Premier League
matches since Zola's arrival, equalised three times before netting an 89th
minute winner in front of the Italian at Bishop's Stortford. Afterwards
Sears, whose only first-team starts this season have come in two Carling Cup
ties, was all smiles as he clutched the match-ball signed by his team-mates.
Sat alongside Zola in the stand at Woodside Park were first-team coaches
Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen, while technical director Gianluca Nani, West
Brom manager Tony Mowbray, Cheltenham Town boss Martin Allen and
Peterborough United chief Darren Ferguson were also in attendance. The
assembled footballing glitterati would have been hugely impressed with the
clinical finishing that saw Sears net 26 goals in all last season. Sebastian
Lake-Gaskin having given Albion a 19th minute lead before the
Hornchurch-based youngster levelled matters just after the half-hour mark.
However, the Baggies were back in front on 38 minutes, Bartosz Slusarski
slamming a penalty past Marek Stech after James Collins – who completed
another 70 minutes after returning from a long-term knee ligament injury –
had been harshly penalised for bringing down the Polish striker.
Sears then doubled his tally just three minutes later, converting from
close-range after Lee Bowyer's shot had been blocked. Unfortunately for the
hosts – managed by coach Alex Dyer following Keen's promotion – Lateef
Alliyu curled in a superb 25-yarder to put Albion 3-2 up on the stroke of
half-time. The excitement continued after the break as Sears' completed his
treble from the penalty spot after a West Brom defender had handled. Junior
Stanislas then hit a post before the striker ended a memorable evening with
a minute remaining, converting from eight yards after Albion failed to clear
Walter Lopez's header.

West Ham United Reserves: Stech, Miller, Lopez, Collins (N'Gala 69),
Davenport, Stanislas, Reid, Collison, Bowyer (Bajner 69), Stokes, Sears.
Unused Subs: Street, Spence, O'Neill.

Wednesday Could Be Crucial For Hammers - WestHamFans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 30 September, 2008 - 20:06.

West Ham United kick off the first leg of what is likely to be an extremely
long drawn out campaign to limit the damage caused by the ruling in favour
of Sheffield Utd over the Carlos Tevez transfer, with a contentious appeal
to the C.A.S in Lausanne on Wednesday. Despite needing both parties to agree
to their arbitration, the C.A.S are able to view evidence and give advice on
their findings. The FA and the Premier league are working behind the scenes
in order to prevent the floodgates of litigation opening, the bizarre and
frankly ridiculous findings of the panel of enquiry could set a precedent
that could change the face of football. Should the C.A.S not be able to
intervene Hammers would then have to look at the actual power, if any, that
the tribunal have to enforce any damages payments to the Blades. Quite
simply if there were any sanctions that could be taken against West Ham who
would implement them? The case would have to go to the High Court which has
already thrown out one of McBabes attempts to get 'justice', if a High Cort
appeal failed then it could be taken to the European Court and so on and so
forth, alternatively an 'amicable' deal could be reached for an undisclosed
amount. What ever the case the current owner is not going to roll over on
this one, and as has been widely mentioned. he has plenty of other things on
his mind that are potentially far more impactive on the club than the
possibility of a Sheffield pay out! -Ed

Zola's tactics aren't just beginners luck - Newham Recorder
30 September 2008

Fulham 1 West Ham Utd 2

LUCKY HAMMERS seemed to be the prevailing mood after West Ham grabbed their
first away victory since the last time they visited Craven Cottage, writes
DAVE EVANS. It was golfer Gary Player who once famously said: "The harder I
practice, the luckier I seem to get," and it is those sentiments that
probably best sum up the Hammers under Gianfranco Zola. The Italian revealed
last week that he used to train and practice for seven or eight hours every
day, and if he has the West Ham squad doing half of that with the same
intensity that he used to, then the improvement will soon be there for all
to see. Fulham dominated this District Line derby for long periods, but in
all honesty they rarely tested Rob Green in the Hammers goal, and it was
West Ham who proved the more clinical in front of goal, and by the end they
could even have added to their tally. "I don't know if we were lucky, I'll
leave it to you to judge," said the manager. "When you win, you also need a
bit of luck, I'm not the sort of person who regrets having luck, I'd like to
have luck in every single game in fact."
We all would, but to say West Ham were lucky, suggests that Fulham were
unlucky and it was hard to back up that case. Certainly, it was the
Cottagers who were lucky that Andy Johnson was not given a straight red card
after just 20 minutes, following a horrendous challenge on Herita Ilunga.
The Congolese full back seems to be made of granite, so his writhing around
on the ground was not the play-acting we see from some foreign players.
Former Hammer Bobby Zamora missed two good chances in the first half, Simon
Davies came closest of all with a shot that flew inches past the post, and
one Jimmy Bullard free kick forced a save from Green, which saw the keeper
get a whack in the face from John Pantsil for his trouble. But West Ham's
defence, protected by the tough tackling of Scott Parker and Valon Behrami,
did not seem overly troubled, and in a two-minute period just before half
time, this match was turned on its head. First, Carlton Cole nodded the ball
into the path of Matty Etherington who sprinted to the by-line before
pulling the ball back. Mark Schwarzer could only palm it out and there was
Cole to finish the move he had started.
For Etherington it was poetic justice after he had been scythed in half by
former team-mate Paul Konchesky. The referee reached for his top pocket to
send off the full back, and then changed his mind and gave him the yellow,
he just about deserved, but the reaction of the Fulham crowd was at least
ignorant, and at most pathetic as they branded the winger a cheat for almost
having his leg broken.
Etherington completed his revenge on those fans on 45 minutes when he
latched on to Mark Noble's superb through ball, to dink it past Schwarzer
for number two, and his celebration with his hand to his ear in front of
those same Fulham fans must have felt very satisfying. They say things come
in threes and just seconds later, Johnson was given his marching orders when
his challenge on Lucas Neill warranted a second yellow card - Neill's boot
flying through the air after Johnson's contact suggested the referee was
dead right. It looked like game over as the teams trooped off at half time,
but as West Ham fans know, unless it is a trip to Derby County, it is never
that simple. Both Noble and the impressive Ilunga were denied by fine
Schwarzer saves when a third goal would have meant it was all over bar the
shouting, but Fulham are made of stronger stuff these days and on 59 minutes
the 10-men hauled themselves back into the game.
Bullard's corner was met by the head of Zol-tan Gera and Neill stuck out his
arm to block it. Danny Murphy stepped up and sent Green the wrong way from
the penalty spot. At times in the second half it was difficult to see which
team were a man short. Cole ploughed a lone furrow up front, with David Di
Michele ineffective and the midfield too far away from their forward line. A
Davies cross just eluded Gera at the far post, while Bullard's free kick
picked out Zamora, who couldn't get enough on his header. But the arrival of
Craig Bellamy for Di Michele on 74 minutes was probably the crucial moment
of the second half, because at last West Ham had another attacking outlet
and something to keep the Fulham defence busy. The Welshman passed inside to
Cole, whose superb curling shot shaved the top of the crossbar, and then did
it again for Behrami whose effort was saved. The best chance of all fell to
him though on 81 minutes. Noble superbly found Ilunga and when the full back
pulled the ball back, Bellamy was there. The striker's first effort was
blocked, but it came invitingly back to him, only for the Welshman to
inexplicably balloon it over the bar.
Fulham had a couple of free kicks just outside the West Ham area to give the
visiting fans some tense final moments, but Bullard wasted them, as he had
for most of the day, and it was the Hammers who held on for the points. "I
think we played a good match and had a few occasions in the second half to
make the result bigger," said Zola. "We only conceded a goal from a penalty,
so I couldn't ask for any more, considering that we had a few players who
weren't in perfect condition." Maybe, but they did have some players at the
top of their game. Noble put in his best display of the season, with his
passing exemplary throughout. Matty Upson did well to hold the lively Zamora
at bay, and Ilunga looked impressive both in defence and getting forward at
every opportunity. There are still some question marks over Behrami's role,
Neill's position, Di Michele's fitness and Parker's effectiveness, but it is
two wins out of two for Zola's team in the Premier League, and it is hard to
be critical of that. "I've been working with this team for two weeks, they
know what kind of football I want to play and they're responding very well
to my demands," said Zola But as we go on together they will be much
better."

West Ham fans will certainly be excited to see that.

West Ham: Green, Faubert, Ilunga, Upson, Neill, Behrami, Noble, Parker (Boa
Morte 90), Etherington (Mullins 80), Di Michele, (Bellamy 74) Cole. Unused
subs: Lastuvka, Lopez, Davenport, Sears.

Attendance: 23,946.
