Moore than just a sponsor - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 17th September 2008
By: Staff Writer

A petition to replace the space formerly filled by the XL logo on West Ham
United's shirts with an advertisement for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer
Research UK has attracted almost 3,000 signatures. XL went bust last week
leading to the club removing the logo from the shirts ahead of the weekend
visit to West Bromwich Albion. Instead of a logo the space was filled by a
crudely sewn claret patch. The club are understood to have been looking at
potential replacements for XL this week. However a number of supporters are
now imploring West Ham to fill the void with the logo of the Bobby Moore
Fund for Cancer Research UK. The club recently retired the number six shirt
in honour of Moore, who began his career at the Boleyn fifty years ago this
year. Supporters believe that installing his charity's logo on the shirts
would be a fitting tribute to the greatest Hammer of all time. One KUMB
member, aaronhammer has been busy mocking up potential designs on Photoshop
... see what you think for yourself below.

Ashton blow for Hammers
Striker ruled out with ankle injury
Last updated: 18th September 2008

West Ham striker Dean Ashton has picked up a fresh injury. The England
striker is set for a month on the sidelines after injuring his ankle in
training on Monday.
The news will be a blow to new Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola, who will now be
without Ashton until October. "Unfortunately I've picked up another injury,"
he told The Sun. "I sprained my ankle in training on Monday and I'm looking
at spending the next three to four weeks on the sidelines. "I just went over
on it. It happens to a lot of players. "It's not too serious but it will
take a few weeks to heal properly. "I'm looking at about three weeks and
then it's the international break. Hopefully I'll be back after that."
Ashton was quick to welcome Zola's appointment as manager. "It's definitely
great for me as a striker. I can learn a lot from him," he said. "He is a
nice guy - he's come in and has been really good with the players so far."

Hammers boss Zola goes on the attack - Echo
8:48am Thursday 18th September 2008

GIANFRANCO Zola is set to name an attacking West Ham United line-up for his
first game in charge at Upton Park. The former Italy forward, who replaced
Alan Curbishley last Thursday and announced plans to play "enjoyable"
football, is planning to put his money where his mouth is in Saturday's
Premier League clash with Newcastle United. Zola's selection and tactics
will be in marked contrast to those employed by Curbishley, whose
conservative approach angered many Irons' fans before his resignation was
accepted on September 3. Central defender Calum Davenport will be dropped to
make way for France international Julien Faubert. The former Bordeaux star
will play at right-back, with captain Lucas Neill switching to the central
defensive role he fills in the Australia national team. Ahead of them,
Switzerland midfielder Valon Behrami will keep his place on the right wing,
while Wales striker Craig Bellamy is battling to recover from a slight
hamstring injury to take his place alongside England's Dean Ashton. A
Hammers source said: "Franco really wants to attack Newcastle, who are on
the back-foot after losing at home to Hull City last week. "They've also got
lots of important players out injured or suspended and have all the
off-pitch issues to worry about." The Magpies are without a full-time
manager following Kevin Keegan's resignation a fortnight ago, while Toon
owner Mike Ashley, who decided to sell the club following a supporter
backlash, has spent the week in the Middle East trying to sell the club to
Arab investors. West Ham, meanwhile, will be keen to get back on track after
losing 3-2 at newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

Fresh injury blow for Ashton - Setanta
by Alex Livie, 18 September 2008

New West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola has been dealt an early blow with the news
Dean Ashton is facing a month on the sidelines. Ashton has been plagued by
injury problems since making the move to West Ham and a fresh ankle injury
has added to his woes. The forward is facing around four weeks on the
sidelines after damaging his ankle in training and will be denied the chance
to impress his new manager. "Unfortunately I've picked up another injury,"
Ashton told The Sun.
"I sprained my ankle in training on Monday and I'm looking at spending the
next three to four weeks on the sidelines. "I just went over on it. It
happens to a lot of players. "It's not too serious but it will take a few
weeks to heal properly. "I'm looking at about three weeks and then it's the
international break. Hopefully I'll be back after that."
Ashton is remaining positive, with the 24-year-old forward confident he can
improve his game under the guidance of Italy legend Zola. He added: "It's
definitely great for me as a striker. I can learn a lot from him. "He is a
nice guy - he's come in and has been really good with the players so far."

O'Leary and Curbishley in contention for Newcastle job
Louise Taylor The Guardian, Thursday September 18 2008

David O'Leary may be offered an opportunity to rehabilitate his managerial
career at Newcastle United. Derek Llambias, the club's managing director, is
a long-standing friend of the Irishman and he and Newcastle's board are
giving serious thought to offering O'Leary a short-term contract.

Although Alan Curbishley is also on Newcastle's radar, the former West Ham
manager is believed to be less interested in running the team during the
interregnum while Mike Ashley endeavours to sell the club. Moreover,
Curbishley resigned after becoming disillusioned with the very sort of
continental management structure which also prompted Kevin Keegan to quit as
manager at St James' Park.

O'Leary, though, is extremely keen to get back into work after being out of
football since leaving Aston Villa in 2006. The one-time Leeds United
manager certainly has his critics but the 50-year-old did lead Leeds to the
semi-finals of the Champions League and his teams have generally played the
sort of high-tempo game which would appeal to Newcastle fans.

Chris Hughton is currently in caretaker charge of Newcastle but, although
his coaching ability is highly valued, the board is concerned about his
capacity to do the job for an extended period which could conceivably run to
several months.

Hughton's problems are exacerbated by the fact that he lacks coaching
support. Indeed Newcastle's back room staff is almost as thin as the
first-team squad. While Steve Round was never replaced when he became
Everton's assistant manager during the summer, Terry McDermott, Keegan's old
No2, has recently been sacked along with Adam Sadler, the former
reserve-team coach.

Ashley, Llambias and their co-directors Dennis Wise and Tony Jiminez, are
believed to be heading back to England today following their trip to the
United Arab Emirates to try to find a buyer for Newcastle. The Gulf's media
has reported that Ashley - seen drinking in a Dubai bar on Tuesday night
when he reputedly failed to turn up for a planned meeting with potential
buyers - contacted representatives of assorted investment funds but failed
to find anyone interested in buying Newcastle at his £480m asking price.

While the Sports Direct owner was told he might find a purchaser if that
demand was lowered to £200m there are suggestions that purportedly
interested parties have used his appearance on the scene to generate
publicity for their companies.

It is also thought that Dubai's ruling Maktoum family hope that reports
linking the Emirate with a potential Newcastle takeover might spur Tom Hicks
and George Gillett into finally selling Liverpool to them.
