Scott Parker Factfile - WHUFC
06/06/2007 17:09

Scott Parker was born and raised in Lambeth, South London and has
represented England at every level from Under-15s to senior. His talents
first came to the fore when, as a 13-year-old, he displayed his keepie-uppie
skills in a TV advert for McDonalds, before graduating from the FA's
national school of excellence at Lilleshalle.
He signed for Alan Curbishley's Charlton Athletic as a trainee and made his
senior debut against Bury in August 1997. Two months later he was offered a
professional contract by Charlton. He enjoyed a brief loan spell with
Norwich City in 2000 to gain more experience and returned to the Valley,
immediately establishing himself as an assured first team player. He made
145 appearances for the Addicks, scoring ten times. Scott's skills soon
caught the eye of then-England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and he was given
his international debut in January 2003 against Denmark, when he came on as
a substitute. He joined Chelsea for £10m a year later, in January 2004, and
was named PFA Young Player of the Year at the end of the 2003/4 season. In
December 2004, Scott suffered a setback when he broke the metatarsal bone in
his foot and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. He joined
Newcastle United for £6.5 million at the start of the 2005/6 season and
scored his first goal for them at Cheltenham in the FA Cup in January 2006
on his 200th career appearance. He was awarded the captaincy by Newcastle
boss Glenn Roeder on the eve of the 2006/7 season. He became Curbs' first
summer signing when he signed a £7 million five-year deal with the Hammers
on June 6th 2007.

West Ham sign Parker in £7m deal - BBC

West Ham United have completed the signing of Newcastle midfielder Scott
Parker in a £7m transfer. Parker, 26, who joins on a five-year contract,
will link up at Upton Park with manager Alan Curbishley, who was his boss at
Charlton. Curbishley said: "He's been captain of Newcastle over the last
couple of seasons and he's exactly the type of player that I wanted to bring
in. "He's very experienced but still young - I'm sure he'll be a big asset."
Curbishley was in the market for a central midfielder as skipper Nigel
Reo-Coker is set to leave the club this summer. Parker spent seven years
with Curbishley at The Valley and made his England debut against Denmark in
2003 before completing a £10m move to Chelsea. But with first-team
opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge, he moved to St James' Park in a
£6.5m deal in 2005 and was made skipper last summer.

Hammers sign Parker - West Ham Online
Match Reporter - Wed Jun 6 2007

West Ham United have confirmed that Scott Parker today completed a £7
million transfer from Newcastle United on a 5 year contract. The 26 year old
Lambeth born Parker is product of the England youth academy at the now
closed Lilleshalle and was signed by Alan Curbishley as a youngster for
Charlton where he developed into an impressive defensive midfield player.

Parker has played at every International level for England from the Under
15's to the Senior team, making 12 appearances for the Under 21's. Parker
has featured for the Senior team 3 times, all whilst at different clubs. He
made his debut in the 3-2 defeat by Denmark in November 2003, then featured
as sub against Sweden in November 2004. His fine form for Newcastle then saw
him earn a recall and a start in the shocking 2-0 defeat in Croatia last
September where he was one of four recognised central midfield players to
start the game.

After impressing for Charlton and winning the PFA young player of the year
award in 2003/4, Chelsea came knocking with an offer to good to turn down,
Curbishley must have forgiven him as he was very critical of his behavior
and how he went about things to get his move across London to Stamford
Bridge just before the end of the transfer window in January 2004 for £10m.
He turned down his boyhood team Tottenham in the process.

He endured a hard time at Stamford Bridge, the quality ahead of him meant
his chances were limited to impress and when he did get the chance it was
more often then not he was being played out of postion.

A £6.5m move to Newcastle, after failing to agree terms with Everton,
resurrected his career in the Summer of 2005. He flourished under Souness in
his first season but his season was cut short by glandular fever in the
March and that ended any chance of being part of the squad for the World Cup
in Germany but his form was good enough to earn that recall at the start of
the following season to the England fold. But the Newcastle captains form
suffered under the hapless Glenn Roeder and he became a victim of the
Newcastle boo boys.

So welcome to Scott Parker and as he comes into the prime of his career
there should be a lot more to come from this talented midfielder.

Career to date

Charlton 116 apps (29 sub apps) 10 goals

Norwich (loan) 6 apps 1 goal

Chelsea 19 apps (9) 1 goal

Newcastle 70 apps (3) 6 goals

Rumour: West Ham step up Bent bid - Talking Soccer

West Ham United boss Alan Curbishley is determined to bring Charlton
athletic striker Darren Bent to Upton Park. Bent looks almost certain to
leave the championship side this summer after relegation at the end of last
season. The England striker scored 15 goals for the addicts last term,
however could not stop the club being sucked into the championship. The
striker is keen to stay in the premiership in order to keep his England
hopes alive.
There are no shortage of clubs willing to take the striker from Charlton,
with Tottenham Hotspur believed to be in pole position for the striker.
However, West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is determined to be reunited with his
former striker and is willing to pay the £18 million required to secure his
signature.

Coppell ready to bid for Mullins - The Independent
By Bill Pierce
Published: 07 June 2007

Reading want to bring Hayden Mullins "home" and are ready to launch a bid
for the West Ham midfielder. The 28-year-old's future at Upton Park looks
bleak as the manager, Alan Curbishley, plans an overhaul of his squad,
having been promised a multi-million-pound budget by the club's Icelandic
owners.

Mullins was born in Reading and the former West Ham manager Alan Pardew
tried to take him to the Madejski Stadium from Crystal Palace when he was in
charge. Mullins was virtually an ever-present for West Ham after Pardew -
now with relegated Charlton - made him his first Upton Park signing.

He made 23 starts last season, plus a further nine as a substitute, but was
soon left out when Curbishley took over. Although Reading's manager, Steve
Coppell, also has his eye on West Brom's Jason Koumas, he fears the club
will struggle in the transfer market this summer, in spite of reaching the
unexpected height of eighth place in their first Premiership campaign last
season.

Coppell's only signing so far is the £650,000 capture Khalifa Cissé from
Boavista, and he said: "I know what kind of players we are looking for, but
I don't think it will be easier this year. Staying up is hard for teams like
us, Wigan and Fulham. We can't compete financially year on year with the big
boys. We will spend what we can, but each year we are losing ground and
unless we get a massive financial injection, which we won't, then it is hard
to compete.

"The gap is getting bigger, so if we were to do the same next year it would
be a bigger achievement than this year. And to do so the year after that
would be bigger still."

With the midfielder Steven Sidwell already a confirmed departure, joining
Chelsea on a free transfer, Coppell is determined to hold on to his best
players for the new season, and the left-back Nicky Shorey is to be offered
a major pay-rise when he returns from England duty - and his honeymoon.

The defender, who cost Reading £25,000 when he signed from Leyton Orient,
has become an obvious target for the bigger clubs and his new international
status will make make him even more coveted. Reading's director of football
Nicky Hammond said: "I spoke to him about a new contract at the end of the
season before he was called up by England. That was based on his performance
throughout the season and I'm waiting for him to come back to me.

"He has been busy lately and I haven't had a vibe from him yet, but he likes
it here and, hopefully, he will want to agree a new deal."

Curbishley delighted to be reunited with £7m Parker - The Independent
By Jason Burt
Published: 07 June 2007

Scott Parker yesterday completed his £7m move to West Ham United with Hayden
Mullins set to join Nigel Reo-Coker in leaving Upton Park. Reading are
preparing a £2m bid for Mullins although a stumbling block could be the
wages. Although the midfielder is now surplus to requirements, Mullins
signed an improved contract at West Ham only last autumn. The 28-year-old is
also wanted by Charlton Athletic but would prefer to stay in the
Premiership.

Aston Villa are yet to make a formal offer for Reo-Coker but have indicated
that they are prepared to pay £7m for the West Ham captain who submitted a
transfer request at the end of the season. However it's understood that West
Ham want at least £8m for the England Under-21 player and are prepared to
wait. Reo-Coker's agent, Tony Finnegan, confirmed the 23-year-old was keen
to move to Villa Park. "He will be signing for Villa once that bid is
accepted," he said.

The deals - along with the sale of other players - will help fund West Ham's
spending spree which began with the capture of Parker who agreed a five-year
contract to move from Newcastle. Parker was the number one target for the
West Ham manager Alan Curbishley. "I'm delighted Scott has agreed to sign
for us," Curbishley said. "Our relationship goes back some time to when he
first joined Charlton as a schoolboy."

Nevertheless, it is understood that Parker had some misgivings about
rejoining Curbishley, especially as the pair fell out over his move from
Charlton to Chelsea for £10m prior to his transfer to St James' Park.

Meanwhile, the West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson confirmed that he had held
discussions with the Everton chairman, Bill Kenwright, but insisted that he
had not made any bid for Andrew Johnson. "I've had a very positive
discussion and can confirm that West Ham have not and are not bidding for
any Everton player at this time," Magnusson said. Even so West Ham are
believed to be mulling over offering up to £20m for the striker.

West Ham have also been linked with the Norwegian striker Tarik Elyounoussi.
The 19-year-old is expected to cost around £3m from Fredrikstad.

Benayoun stalls on contract in hope of Anfield call - The Independent
By Jason Burt
Published: 07 June 2007

Yossi Benayoun is understood to be hoping for a bid from Liverpool despite
agreeing an improved five-year contract at West Ham United.

The Israeli international has told friends that he expects the Liverpool
manager, Rafael Benitez, to make a move for him by the end of this week.
However as the Anfield club will certainly not offer more than £5m for the
midfielder, it is unlikely that West Ham will sell.

Benayoun was linked to Liverpool and Arsenal last summer but decided to stay
at West Ham and was offered a new contract, which he did not sign. At the
end of this season he again sought talks with the club's directors, as
revealed by The Independent, and threatened to submit a transfer request
but, instead, was offered a deal that more than doubled his pay to £50,000 a
week.

So far the new contract has not been signed with sources at West Ham
believing that Benayoun is hoping to give himself more leverage in any
further negotiations.

Benayoun's agent, Ronen Katzav, insisted yesterday that the player intended
to put pen to paper. "He has not rejected the contract," Katzav said. "He
still plans to sign the contract, but there has been such much happening
with his new baby and him being on international duty."

Benayoun played for Israel in last night's European Championship qualifier
away to Andorra, which was won 2-0. Katsev added: "Obviously, in football
you never know and, whilst it is unsigned, there is always a chance of
something else. But the deal is agreed and we intend to sign it."

Hammers ready swoop for Norway wonderkid - Daily Mail
Last updated at 12:09pm on 6th June 2007

West Ham are leading the chase for coveted Norwegian striker Tarik
Elyounoussi. Chelsea and other top clubs have been monitoring the Under-21
international but Alan Curbishley is in pole position to sign him. The West
Ham manager will have to pay about £3million for the 19-year-old who turned
down trials at Chelsea and Portsmouth last season. Elyounoussi, of Moroccan
descent, could be the first part of a strikeforce rebuilding process at
Upton Park which hinges on Carlos Tevez.
The club are optimistic they can hang on to the Argentine - who scored twice
for his country against Algeria last night - at least until January after he
expressed a willingness to stay. Some of Europe's biggest clubs have shown
interest in Tevez but his future will not be decided until after the Copa
America, which finishes in Venezuela in mid-July. West Ham have already told
Marlon Harewood he can leave and released Teddy Sheringham, but they have
Dean Ashton to come back next season. Elyounoussi, who plays for Fredrikstad
in Norway, was the country's Young Player of the Year in 2006 after helping
his club win the League Cup. Curbishley's main target is Charlton's Darren
Bent, but the striker would prefer to join Tottenham and looks unlikely to
sign for West Ham. It is also thought it would take an offer of about £30m
to persuade Everton to change their stance on keeping Andy Johnson. Eidur
Gudjohnsen remains an option if Barcelona convince him he would be wasting
his time fighting for a place at the Nou Camp next season. The former
Chelsea striker wants to establish himself in Spain and will hold talks with
the club later this month, but he would look to move back to the Premiership
if his stay is cut short. West Ham are also hoping to seal a £7m deal for
Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker after failing with a late attempt to sign
Manchester City's Joey Barton, who was snapped up by the St James' Park
club. The Hammers have turned down a £7m offer from Aston Villa for captain
Nigel Reo-Coker and are awaiting an improved offer.

West Ham chairman: Transfer targets locked in
tribalfooball.com - June 06, 2007

West Ham United chairman Eggert Magnusson admits they're in talks with
several transfer targets. The Hammers wrapped up the signing of Scott Parker
from Newcastle United yesterday and Magnusson said: "This is an important
time for the club. The board are working very hard with Alan Curbishley to
identify what we need to do to strengthen our squad for next season. "Of
course, throughout this period there will be a great deal of media
speculation about players, transfer fees and even salary levels, much of
which will not reflect reality. "In the meantime, I believe our supporters
know we are seeking to take the club on to the next level as we prepare for
next season and will always act in the best interests of West Ham in the
decisions we take."

CURBS: MOVE SUITS PARKER AMBITION - Sporting Life
By Alex Lowe, PA Sport

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley believes Scott Parker's move to Upton Park
could help reignite his England career. Parker, who has only won three caps
over the last four years, completed his £7million switch from Newcastle on
Wednesday after agreeing a five-year deal with the Hammers. Curbishley
targeted Parker as a potential captain and is confident the 26-year-old can
help bring success to West Ham and strengthen his own international
credentials. "He's coming to the club knowing full well that we're trying to
push forward and he wants to be part of that," he said. "Firstly he wants to
improve our team, then he wants to improve his chances of forcing his way
back into the England scene. "He has been captain of Newcastle and he is
exactly the type of player that I wanted to bring to the club.
"He's very experienced but still young and I'm sure he's going to be a big
asset to West Ham." It is unlikely he will be the last big name recruit to
sign for West Ham this summer. Curbishley has been given in excess of
£40million to spearhead West Ham's challenge for Europe. Chairman Eggert
Magnusson said: "We are seeking to take the club on to the next level as we
prepare for next season. This is an important time for the club. "The board
are working very hard with Alan Curbishley to identify what we need to do to
strengthen our squad for next season."
But Magnusson confirmed on Wednesday that West Ham have not tabled a bid for
Everton striker Andrew Johnson - at least, not yet. Everton manager David
Moyes reacted furiously to recent reports linking Johnson, Mikel Arteta and
Tim Cahill to Upton Park. Magnusson attempted to cool the rising
temperatures by confirming West Ham have not made offers for any
Evertonians, though he did not close the door completely. Magnusson said:
"I've had a very positive discussion with my good friend Bill Kenwright, the
Everton chairman, and can confirm that West Ham have not and are not bidding
for any Everton player at this time." Parker's arrival at Upton Park is
likely to spark a midfield merry-go-round, with Joey Barton now set to
replace him at Newcastle. And West Ham's captain Nigel Reo-Coker is closing
in on a move to Aston Villa after handing in a transfer request at the end
of last season.
