Gentleman Ginge says sorry
WHUFC.com

James Collins apologises to young fan Ryan Evans after hitting him with a
wayward shot
Six-year-old was watching warm-up ahead of Wales' international with Moldova
Collins contacted Ryan's father Darren and has sent a package of West Ham
United goodies

Giant defender James Collins has shown his softer side apologising to a
young Wales fan he accidentally hit with a wayward shot. The Ginger Pele was
warming up for the Dragons' FIFA World Cup qualifying tie with Moldova at
Cardiff City Stadium when his awful effort caught little Ryan Evans in the
face. The West Ham United star, who is ironically in the running to win the
Hammers' August Goal of the Month award for his strike at Chelsea,
immediately went to Ryan's aid in the stand. Gentleman Collins handed over a
shirt donated by his friend and Wales captain Gareth Bale and posed for a
photograph, with six-year-old Ryan looking understandably shocked by the
experience. Collins himself posted the photo on his Instagram page asking
for help in contacting Ryan to check on his wellbeing, and the young fan's
father Darren quickly responded to the request via Twitter. Newport-born
Ginge, who earned his 50th cap in the 4-0 victory, has now got in touch with
the Evans family and will be sending a package full of goodies back to his
homeland. "I'm so glad to hear Ryan is OK," former Cardiff City star Collins
told whufc.com. "I'm very sorry because it was an awful shot! "I've got
three kids myself so I understand how concerned it must have made Ryan's
family feel and how upset Ryan himself must have been. I should probably
stick to defending rather than shooting! "I've been in contact with Darren
and have got Ryan's clothes and shoe size, so I'll be sending a few West Ham
and Wales bits out to him to say 'Sorry'. "Despite the shock of being hit by
one of my shots, I hope Ryan and his family enjoyed the game on Tuesday
night. Their support was fantastic and we'll be doing all we can to get to
the World Cup in 2018."

Ryan's father Darren, from Birchgrove in Cardiff, told Wales Online: "It was
a hell of a thump, he just didn't see it coming. It gave him a massive shock
and he was obviously very upset to begin with. "Ginge came straight up into
the stands to check on him and then said he'd be back with a shirt. "I
didn't know if he would but he came straight back with Gareth Bale's shirt,
gave Ryan a hug and had his picture taken with him. It was a lovely thing
for him to do and we just want him to know Ryan is fine. He actually wants a
James Collins shirt now as well! "You often hear that footballers don't care
but he was great."

Browne relishing PL2 return
WHUFC.com

Midfielder Marcus Browne is looking forward to returning to competitive
action on Friday
West Ham United PL2 host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the latest round of
Premier League 2 fixtures
Brownevs side have won two and lost one of their opening three matches

Marcus Browne says the West Ham United PL2 squad is a great place to be at
the moment, as the team prepares to resume their domestic action against
Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.
The Hammers host Wolves at Chigwell Construction Stadium in Premier League 2
at 7pm, with free admission for London Stadium Season Ticket Holders. Browne
has been one of the standout players in the side which has picked up six
points from three matches in the newly-formatted Premier League 2, and
expects he and his teammates to improve week on week. The attacking
midfielder has been with the Academy of Football since the age of eight and
was part of the triumphant Development Squad which won the U21 Premier
League Cup (now Premier League Cup) in a dramatic penalty shootout against
Hull City in May. The young Hammers have been drawn in Group E of the PL Cup
along with Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion
and Browne is relishing the tests coming up. úI think we started the season
quite brightly and positively. Wevve been playing some good football,î said
Browne. úI think the last two results we had in the Coventry game (lost 4-2
in the EFL Trophy) and Swansea game (lost 2-0 in PL2) didnvt really
correlate to how we played because I think we played quite well in both.
There are positives to take from the last two games but wevll carry on.
Wevve got some good games coming up and the lads are looking forward to
them. Therevs mixed emotions going into the Cup. Therevs going to be a bit
of pressure on us again, considering we won it last year. Obviously teams
will know that we won it so theyvll come at us a bit more than they did last
year and itvll be a lot harder for us. I think with the team wevve got, the
personnel wevve got and the way wevve been playing, therevs no reason we
canvt do as well as we did last season. Terry Westleyvs men entertain Wolves
in their fourth Premier League 2 fixture of the season on Friday evening and
Browne is expecting a tight encounter. Both sides have an identical record
in the league so far, with two wins and a defeat apiece; the Hammers sitting
a place higher than their West Midlands opponents in second because of their
superior goal difference. úIt should be a good game, considering we beat
them 4-0 last season. Theyvll come here and wonvt make it easy for us. úWe
know what type of players theyvve got and theyvre a good team so wevre
expecting a good test. Admission for non-Season Ticket Holders is priced at
£5 for Adults and £3 for O65s/U16s. There is no parking available at
Chigwell Construction Stadium itself, but there is plenty of street parking
available nearby.

From the Treatment Room
WHUFC.com

Head of Medical and Sports Science Stijn Vandenbroucke issues an update - in
association with Spire Roding Hospital...

Hello everyone,

I would like to start this week by welcoming our three new signings, Alvaro
Arbeloa, Simone Zaza and Edimilson Fernandes, to West Ham United.

Second, I would like to congratulate Adrian and Michail Antonio on their
first senior international call-ups for Spain and England respectively.
Even though they were not involved in the matches, the experiences they had
will have been great for them and we look forward to hearing all about them
in the treatment room!

We have now had reports from all of our players who went away on
international duty and I am pleased to tell you that we have not suffered
any injuries, just a few bumps and bruises, and all our international
players should be available for selection on Saturday against Watford.

Dimitri Payet and Havard Nordtveit both played for their countries, France
and Norway respectively, in their opening World Cup qualifiers and will have
benefited from the game-time after missing the Manchester City game.

They will all return – those above plus Darren Randolph, James Collins,
Angelo Ogbonna, Reece Oxford, Cheikhou Kouyate and Gokhan Tore – to training
with the squad on Thursday, when we shall all train together for the first
time.

Sofiane Feghouli also remained with us as he completed his rehabilitation
from a thigh injury and he has been in full training this week and will also
be available to face Watford on Saturday.

We have four injured players at present – Andre Ayew, Aaron Cresswell, Andy
Carroll and Diafra Sakho.

Aaron is doing well with his rehabilitation. He has started running and
works two times a day with physiotherapist Dom Rogan. Cressy will return to
team training in October.

Andre is also working hard in the morning and the evening, he is extremely
motivated to play football as soon as possible. We have made great progress
and he will get back stronger but the reality is that it will take time.

With Andy and Diafra, both are making progress but it is too early to put a
timeframe on their return to first-team action. I will have a better view on
their return date next week.

Lanzini - I'm very grateful to the fans
WHUFC.com

Manuel Lanzini insists he will always be grateful to the West Ham United
fans for making him feel at home in east London and is thrilled to have
pledged his long-term future to the Club. Lanzini became a fans favourite in
just his first full year in the Premier League and played a major role in
helping the Hammers enjoy a memorable final season at the Boleyn Ground. The
Argentine attacking midfielder scored seven goals and few could forget his
memorable strikes against Everton and Chelsea. Following his season-long
loan from Al-Jazira last summer, Lanzini put pen to paper on a permanent
four-year contract with a further two-year option.
The 23-year-old says he will never forget the support that the West Ham fans
showed towards him and cannot wait to play his first game at London Stadium.

Lanzini said: "I'm very grateful to the West Ham fans. They've always
treated me very well since I arrived and I really like them and their
passion for the club. They've made me feel at home which is very important.
"I'm also very grateful to the board, the coaching staff and my teammates
who've helped me settle in and make me feel at home. "I'm happy to have
signed a permanent deal here and will stay here for more years which is what
I wanted, so I'm very pleased. "There were fantastic moments last season and
we had a great year in which we achieved a lot for West Ham. We tried to
stay as high in the table as we could and on a personal level, I felt very
happy last year. I hope that will also be the case this year. "I am excited
to be playing at the new Stadium. I played in a similar stadium in Argentina
in front of 65,000 people and it's brilliant to be on the pitch because you
feel the people around you and it's great to be in the stands. "The new
stadium takes West Ham to a higher level which is very important."

Lanzini was forced to miss the opening six games of the season with a knee
injury, but he returned to the substitutes bench for the last game against
Manchester City and is now pushing for a first-team start against Watford on
Saturday. Having forged an impressive partnership alongside Dimitri Payet
last season, Lanzini says he cannot wait to team up with the French star
once again following his superb display at the European Championship Finals
during the summer.

Lanzini added: "Dimi and I get on very well. He has a great personality.
He's a great player and when I'm on the pitch, I always try to link up with
him because I know he's the player who can make the difference and can play
that pass which means the rest of us enjoy ourselves. "It went quite well
for us last year and we hope to continue in that vein so that we give the
West Ham fans many more happy moments."

Lanzini is relishing the chance to come up against his Argentine compatriot
and former team-mate Roberto Pereyra on Saturday. The duo played together at
River Plate and Lanzini has no doubts that Pereyra will be a major success
at Watford following his £10.4million move from Juventus during the summer.
"We played for the same club in Argentina and we were in the youth ranks
together for a long time. He's a bit older than me, but we've stayed in
touch and he's a great guy.
"He's a good player and has shown that at Juventus, a very big club. That
gave him experience and added to his personality, so I think that if does
well in terms of his game and shows his personality, he's going to be a
success."

More stewards reveal OS fears
KUMB.com
Filed: Wednesday, 7th September 2016
By: Staff Writer

Further stewards have come forward to share their tales of woe following the
publication of KUMB's Olympic Stadium revelations.

Yesterday a former Boleyn Ground steward, who has moved with the club to
Stratford, revealed that both they and a number of fellow OCS employees were
considering resigning from their roles as a result of the numerous issues
which have blighted West Ham's move to E20.

'Hammers4ever', who also used to work at the Boleyn complained that the
feedback offered by stewards had been totally ignored by the stadium
operators, LS185. "It's just and shame that both OCS and the stadium have
not taken in what we have been saying from the start," they told KUMB.

"What make it worse for the old guard is that at every game we are told that
we work for the stadium, not the club - and that what we used to do at the
old ground will not do here.

"Hopefully they will find out soon that if it isn't broken, don't fix it!
What we use to do at Upton Park worked. If we are having problems now, what
is it going to be like when the big boys come to our ground?

"I hope the top staff at West Ham read this and start to put some pressure
on both OCS and the stadium operators to sort it out. All this bad press
could be avoided if you only put the club first; get the right staff in the
right positions and let them do their jobs."

Another steward who has worked both grounds, posting as 'Esthameian' was
also in agreement with our source's thoughts.

"Unfortunately, OCS do not seem to understand that stewarding at a Premier
League football club is a totally different challenge to stewarding the many
other kinds of events with which they are associated," they said.

"When stewards arrive for duty for matches at present - hours before they
are actually needed - they are allocated completely at random to different
areas of the ground for each game, so there is no continuity and no rapport
built up with the fans.

"The majority of Stadium 185 stewards are 'mercenaries' who have no specific
interest in the club or the fans. One I spoke to said 'I'm Millwall - I hate
West Ham - but it's a job'.

"Unless something changes, and soon, I'll be off too - I just don't want to
be part of such a shambles and possibly involved in a dangerous and tragic
situation - I believe there is a real risk. Such a shame, but so avoidable."

Meanwhile a third steward told KUMB that they were on the verge of throwing
in the towel, having become equally disenchanted at the situation. "I'll
give them another couple of matches and if it doesn't improve, I'll quit,"
said 'another one'.

"I agree 100 per cent with every word the source quoted in KUMB's article
has said and the other former Boleyn stewards I know all agree too. Some of
them have quit already and everyone else I know is on the verge of doing
so."

Simone Zaza's father admits striker only joined West Ham after Napoli
snubbed him

The Italy star joined West Ham from Juventus on loan with a view to a
£25million deal next summer
The Mirror

Simone Zaza's father has admitted the striker only joined West Ham after
Napoli snubbed him. The Italy star has signed from Juventus on loan with a
view to a £25million deal next summer. He is in line to make his debut in
Saturday's Premier League home game against Watford. Zaza's Dad, Antonio,
however revealed that the Hammers succeeded in landing him because interest
from Italian giants Napoli suddenly went cold. He said: "There was a strong
contact with Napoli, then we didn't hear from them, and they did not even
explain why. "I have no problem saying that his proposal was also very
important. Then, however, we did not hear anything. "Simone has never
refused Naples, this must be clear. He would wear more than willingly the
blue shirt, anyone to think otherwise. "Thank God, we were spoilt for choice
and there was the important proposal of West Ham, a great project. "Simone
in Turin was fine, but he decided to change because he was very conscious of
there being very little space to play at Juventus - and his desire was to
play more."

West Ham star: I rejected offers in Italy and Spain to complete Hammers move

Alvaro Arbeloa says he snubbed offers in Spain and Italy before West Ham
move. The 33-year-old defender signed a one-year deal at the London Stadium
on deadline day after leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season. The
former Spain international admits he was at one point in advanced talks with
Serie A giants AC Milan and also snubbed La Liga clubs to remain loyal to
Real. And now Arbeloa, who previously spent two seasons at Liverpool, is
looking forward to getting started under Hammers manager Slaven Bilic. "The
conversations with AC Milan were at an advanced stage but the Chinese
takeover of the [Italian] club complicated the deal," Arbeloa told Spanish
radio station Cadena Cope. "I took a decision not to continue with this
option and fortunately, this offer [West Ham] came along. "I had offers from
Spain but I didn't want to wear any other shirt than that of Real Madrid in
Spain so I opted to leave. "The choice of West Ham, the club, the city, the
coach and the fans, felt good in every way and here I am. I'm very happy, I
am where I want to be and I'm looking forward to playing."

Man-of-the-match Randolph happy with a point
Updated / Sept. 5, 2016 23:31 1
rte.ie

Man-of-the-match Darren Randolph declared himself happy with a point after
Ireland opened their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign with a draw away to
Serbia. It was far from a vintage performance from Ireland but goals from
Jeff Hendrick and Daryl Murphy, along with a string of saves from Randolph
saw Ireland claim a point in some testing conditions. Speaking to RTÉ Sport
afterwards, Randolph said: "It's a tough place to come. The manager said
inside that it could be a very important point come the end of the group, so
yeah, I'm very happy to get a point in the first game of the group. "I just
want to do my part for the team. I got lucky today when I needed it, other
times I just happened to be in the right place at the right time but as
everyone says it was a team effort, for the boys to keep battling on to the
end and big Murph' getting the equaliser. "We knew it was going to be
tough, especially being the away team you're going to come under pressure,
with the pitch out there it was difficult at times. But again, we dug in and
typical Irish we battled out way and got something out the game."

Ginge reaches half century
WHUFC.com

A Hammers defender earned a half-century of international caps on Monday
There was also action for Darren Randolph in goal for the Republic of
Ireland
Coming on from the bench, Angelo Ogbonna helped Italy record a 3-1 win in
FIFA World Cup qualifying

West Ham United defender James Collins earned his 50th international cap on
Monday night as his Wales side thrashed Moldova 4-0 in FIFA World Cup
qualifying. Following a superb UEFA Euro 2016 campaign, Chris Coleman's men
were in a confident mood at the Cardiff City Stadium in Group D as Gareth
Bale's brace sealed the important victory on home soil. Burnley forward Sam
Vokes had opened the scoring in the first period before Joe Allen doubled
the advantage just before the break. Real Madrid superstar Bale then bagged
a wonderful solo effort five minutes after the restart before adding a
fourth from the penalty spot in injury time after Collins had replaced
Ashley Williams to wear the Dragons' shirt for the 50th time.

Elsewhere in World Cup qualifiying action, Darren Randolph played 90 minutes
for the Republic of Ireland as they began their Group D campaign with a
respectable 2-2 draw away in Serbia.
New Burnley signing Jeff Hendrick gave the visitors the dream start after
just three minutes but the hosts hit back through Filip Kostic and
Southampton's Dusan Tadic in the second 45 to take the lead. Martin
O'Neill's side were not beaten though, and new Newcastle United forward
Daryl Murphy struck his first international goal to earn Randolph's men a
point in their qualifying opener.

Elsewhere, Hammers defender Angelo Ogbonna played just under half an hour
for Italy as the Azzurri triumphed 3-1 in Israel. Ex-West Ham defender Tal
Ben Haim bagged for the hosts but by then, they had already conceded twice
through former Saints man Graziano Pelle and Antonio Candreva. Italy sub
and Lazio forward Ciro Immobile sealed the win in Group D for Italy with
less than ten minutes remaining.

Gokhan Tore was an unsused substitute for Turkey as they drew with West Ham
manager Slaven Bilic's Croatian national side 1-1, while Spain hammered
Liechtenstein 8-0 with Hammers keeper Adrian on the bench.

Payet targets winning start
WHUFC.com

Dimitri Payet set to start as France embark on 2018 FIFA World Cup
qualifying campaign
Les Bleus start their Group A fixtures with a difficult-looking game in
Belarus on Friday
Payet has 27 caps and six goals for his country and finished as a runner-up
at Euro 2016

Dimitri Payet is taking nothing for granted as France embark on their 2018
FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in Belarus on Tuesday. Les Bleus begin
their Group A challenge in Borisov on the back of a run to the final of UEFA
Euro 2016, where they were edged out by Portugal in Paris. While that
disappointment is still fresh in France's memory, Payet knows they cannot
afford to lick their wounds when they face a Belarus side ranked 70th in the
world. And, having beaten Italy 3-1 in a friendly in Bari last week, the
Hammer of the Year is confident of getting the qualification off to a
winning start. "Obviously the Italy game was just a friendly match, but we
know the importance of getting our qualification campaign underway with a
good result," said Payet, who is set to earn his 28th cap on Tuesday
evening. "We said it at the Euros, but there's not much of a gap anymore
between national football's 'big' teams and the 'small' countries. I think
that today, all international footballers are at a good level and we saw at
the Euros that the gap between teams wasn't what it was in the past, so
every match is going to be difficult, and [on Tuesday] especially as we are
playing away from home."

Having only recently returned from a knock suffered in the Premier League
opener at Chelsea, Payet was introduced as a half-time substitute against
the Italians last Thursday evening. Even then, the No27 produced a typically
virtuoso performance, helping France to complete an impressive victory over
the Azzurri. Payet wants France to produce a similarly effective display in
Borisov, where he believes the Belarussians will be highly motivated to
score an upset over Didier Deschamps' men. That said, the Reunion-born
playmaker remains confident that the visitors will get the job done and make
a winning start at Borisov-Arena. "We saw it against Italy, we started the
match well and managed to score quite quickly, so I think that's also the
key to ensuring success in our match," Payet told fff.fr. "Obviously, we've
gained some status following the Euros; that's a reputation we need to live
with and take on board – teams will be trying to study our game, will want
to turn us over, to beat us, so we still in some way get great motivation
from being ready to stand up to all that. "After the Euros, the team and our
fans want to be able to ride that wave, and we know that only happens
through winning, so now the ball is in our court…"

The Big Interview - Ashley Fletcher
WHUFC.com

Ashley Fletcher has wasted no time settling into his new surroundings
following his summer move from Manchester United and has become an
established first-team member in the opening part of the season.

The talented forward impressed as a second half substitute against Astra
Giurgiu in the Europa League and made his first full start in the last
Premier League game against Manchester City.

Fletcher is now hoping to cement his place in the squad and show he is good
enough to compete in the top flight on a regular basis....

Ashley, how special was it for you to make your Premier League debut in
Manchester at the Etihad Stadium and do you feel ready to compete at the
highest level?

AF: "It was everything I dreamed it would be, to be fair. Making my debut
back in Manchester, where I've grown up and doing it against City, one of
the best teams in the country, unfortunately we couldn't get the result, but
it's a day I'll never forget.

"The manager said he thought I had a good game and that he hopes it's the
first game of many.

"We know we let ourselves down against City, in the first half we couldn't
really lay a glove on them, but in the second half we came out fighting. The
manager said to go out there and prove that we are a good team.

"We were missing a few key players but that wasn't enough of an excuse for
our performance, we know we should have done better.

"I think I've settled in very well, everyone's welcomes me with open arms
really, the players, the fans and all the staff so I'm loving every minute."

How much are you enjoying playing at the new Stadium and performing in front
of nearly 60,000 fans every home game?

AF: "The fans are a massive part of the club, and every home game is very
special. Obviously it's up to us to make them happy.

"It was fantastic to play at the new Stadium. The atmosphere was
unbelievable, for me to come on in such an important game (against Astra),
and I'd like to think I made a bit of a difference.

"The result didn't go our way, but the match was about trying to show the
manager what I can do."

How disappointing was it for you to see the Hammers go out of the Europa
League before the group stages took place?

AF: "It was very disappointing to be knocked out of Europe so early, but it
does give us an opportunity to do well in the league.

"I think we've added a lot of quality to the team with some of the new
signings; Simone Zaza, Lanzini, Feghouli – players of that calibre. It just
shows the club's ambition and I hope the fans see that. Added to the new
stadium, we could be in for a very exciting season."

Following the defeat against Manchester City, how important is it that the
team gets straight back on the winning trail when they face Watford on
Saturday?

AF: "Watford are a good team. They have also added to their squad in the
summer so it's going to be another tough game."

What are you hopes for the rest of the season and what would you like to
achieve at West Ham United?

AF: "My personal ambitions are to get as many games and as many minutes as
possible.

"Whether it's starting games or coming off the bench, I want to be involved
as much as possible. I think I've made a good start and made an impact so
far and hopefully that continues."

Finally, what is it like for you to hear the West Ham fans singing Bubbles
when you first go out onto the pitch?

AF: "It's incredible, hearing 57,000 fans signing bubbles is amazing, I got
goosebumps the first time I heard it, I'd never heard it live before, so
when I heard that, I thought "wow, what a club."

DAVID GOLD BEGINS PRELIMINARY SAFE STANDING TALKS
BY JOE DORAN ON 6 SEPTEMBER 2016 AT 4:47PM
TheWestHamWay.co.uk

West Ham co-owner David Gold has today confirmed that the club are in
early-stage talks to make the 'London Stadium' the first Premier League
ground to have a 'safe standing' area. This technology, which has been the
subject of debate for decades, would allow the Irons to tackle the ongoing
friction between those who wish to stand, and those who wish to remain
seated at the new stadium.
Standing is a key part of British football culture in a way that isn't so
prevalent in some countries, so the idea that fans want to stand for the
full 90 minutes, even with a seat available, may seem strange to foreign
fans. It is also a culture that is not catered for in the age of the
all-seater, with Premier League and Olympic Stadium rules prohibiting
individuals from 'persistently standing'. However, as the last few weeks
have shown, there has been a significant proportion of the West Ham fan base
who feel disillusioned at having to sit in the new stadium, as the stewards
at Upton Park had been fairly easy-going on the subject.

Equally, there is another portion of the fans who wish to sit, either due to
personal choice, or inability to stand. These individuals have declared
frustration at having their view blocked by those who insist on standing
throughout the game, especially when they have the law on their side. This
issue has led to confrontations between fans and stewards, and is now
reaching a point where the club must surely address it.

One solution which had been proposed was a season ticket exchange, in which
people who wished to stand and people who wished to sit were relocated to
create a standing area, as had unofficially developed at Upton Park. At the
old stadium the Bobby Moore lower and Trevor Brooking lower became
synonymous with standing, and though signs were always up indicating that
standing would not be tolerated, a 'blind eye' approach was taken in these
areas. It seems, however, that the club plan to try and implement and
official recreation of this with a safe standing zone, like the one that
was installed by 'Ferco' at Celtic Park this summer

David Gold himself took to his twitter account this morning to break this
news with a rather odd third-person message, proclaiming "Gold starts safe
seating talks". Though perhaps a little confusing in it's nature, this tweet
and others like it demonstrate Gold and Sullivan's continued desire to make
the stadium suit all parties and keep the fan base as informed as possible.
It remains to be seen whether these talks bear fruit, but news of their
happening will surely come as welcome news from all sides of the standing
argument.

This is written by Alex Shilling

A youthful West Ham side missing several key players including talismanic
forward Katie Bottom were given a footballing masterclass by a rampant Spurs
side yesterday.

The Hammers, manager James Marrs admits, are still a team in transition as
they adjust to the training methods and style of play that brought the
former Brighton boss such success in the Women's Premier League last season
and it was evident yesterday on a warm afternoon at Ship Lane.

Spurs, tipped by many within the women's game as favourites for promotion
to the Super League this season, dominated the game from start to finish and
at times the Irons ladies struggled to make it out of their own half.

With Aditi Chauhan seemingly not yet ready for her first appearance since
re-joining the club over the summer, Marrs opted to give young goalkeeper
Beth Griffiths her first appearance of the season, while Katie Bottom, Danni
Ritson and Chelsea Hinz all missed out through injury.

Although the Hammers made the early running in the opening minutes, it
didn't take long for the visitors to get on the scoresheet.

A hurried clearance from Griffiths fell straight to Lucia Leon who
comfortably tucked away her side's first after the afternoon. The young
goalkeeper's afternoon didn't improve when she dragged down Wendy Martin
inside the box two minutes later, with full-back Eartha Ponde despatching
the penalty with ease.

Spurs were ramping the pressure up and had their third with just 10 minutes
gone as a smart interchange between Riana Soobadoo and Bianca Baptise
finished with a first-time strike from the latter, before a fierce effort
from Nikitta Whinnett surely put the game to bed.

West Ham striker Molly Peters was finding herself increasingly isolated up
front with almost the entire game being played in her own half, but with her
side four down, a smart turn on the halfway line took her away from Spurs'
skipper Schillaci only for her attempted through ball to Amy Waters to be
played just a touch early as the forward was caught offside.

Peters was once again leading the determined resistance from an
increasingly beleaguered home side and got the Irons' first shot on target,
with an easy stop for Spurs' debutant Megan Lynch.

However, there was to be no dramatic comeback as an attempted Sam Miller
tackle brought the troublesome Martin again and the Spurs striker stepped up
to grab her side's fifth with barely half an hour gone.

Number six arrived shortly as Whinnett headed in the rebound after Leon's
effort was parried by Griffiths, who had done well a couple of minutes
previously to pounce on a low Baptiste cross with Martin lurking.

Spurs' dominance continued after the break, with former Hammer Kelley
Blanchflower introduced at half time in place of Martin.

It didn't take the pacy forward long to rub salt into her old club's
wounds, as Spurs struck twice in the space of two minutes. Renee Hector
headed number seven from Baptiste's corner and then Blanchflower struck the
eighth from close range after Baptiste's shot had been deflected into her
path.

The Irons were becoming increasingly overwhelmed in the centre of the park
again but determined performances in midfielder from Amy Cooper and at the
back from former interim manager Karen Ray were keeping the visitors from
adding to their already impressive tally.

But it couldn't last any longer, and Blanchflower grabbed her second of the
afternoon before Schillaci completed the scoring with a tap-in at the far
post.

An afternoon to forget for West Ham Ladies, who will now go into the next
round of the FAWPL Plate as Spurs march on to the next round of the cup.
Plenty for manager James Marrs to think about ahead of next Sunday's visit
of Coventry United Ladies to Ship Lane.

OS move a 'nightmare', says steward
KUMB.com
Filed: Tuesday, 6th September 2016
By: Staff Writer

A former Boleyn Ground steward who now works at the Olympic Stadium has told
of their "nightmare" experience following West Ham United's move. The match
day official contacted KUMB.com in order to express their concerns about the
safety of supporters as the result of poor organisation at the OS, following
the decision by Newham Council's Safety Advisory Group to cap the stadium
capacity at 57,000. And the source also revealed that many of their fellow
employees, who similarly followed the club from E13 to E20, were equally
disenchanted - with many ready to resign just a matter of weeks after taking
up their new posts. "The stadium operators are not listening and have no
understanding of fans' frustrations," our source, who asked us to preserve
their anonymity, told KUMB. "And if things are not addressed, the problem is
only going to get worse. "When we arrived at the new venue, many stewards
were given positions that had no bearing on their previous experience.
"Some of those who had worked directly with fans for 20 years were told to
guard lifts, whilst new stewards working their first event were asked to
deal with the public. This was enough for some to give up on the Olympic
Stadium before we'd even started!"

Our source revealed that Boleyn Ground stewards had been consulted over the
move as early as last year - although promises made during those early
meetings were soon forgotten. "Stadium Manager Steve Riley, who used to work
for Fulham, visited West Ham in November 2015 and promised that all stewards
would have the same roles in the new stadium," he revealed. "We had 330
match day staff at this point. "Unfortunately the application process was a
nightmare and some gave up at that stage. Of those 330 match day staff, only
140 have signed on to work for OCS at the Olympic Stadium - largely because
of the low pay."

The steward - who has previously worked football grounds both domestically
and abroad - firmly believes that many of the problems witnessed in the
stands already this season could have been avoided if the Boleyn Ground team
had been persuaded to move to the OS. "I was one of 40 staff in my section
at the Boleyn Ground and of those, 35 were West Ham fans," our source said.
"I feel this is a point that is lost, as the stewards that have an emotional
investment in the club tend to work much better. "That's because they share
and understand the frustration of fans, can judge the prevailing mood and
react before it happens. "Furthermore, they are not there for the money. In
many cases, they lost money just to work for West Ham. For example, I would
want five times the amount I am paid to do my job at any other club!"

As a result, inexperienced stewards have been introduced to deal with crowd
control by the stadium's operators, London Stadium 185 - a situation that
our source firmly believes has exacerbated the issues being experienced by
fans. "For some there is a complete lack of understanding of what they are
dealing with," said our source. "I have offered my thoughts but they don't
seem to understand what they are dealing with. "Some of the new stewards
said they felt unsafe. I spoke to four or five people from the club during
the game and they are frustrated too. "Against Astra Giurgiu there were less
than 70 former Boleyn Ground stewards working. If it continues, I would
expect no more than 40 to be left by the end of the year - out of around 700
Olympic Stadium staff."

Allardyce is a winner, says Kouyate

Cheikhou Kouyate has backed former manager Sam Allardyce to succeed as
England manager. Allardyce, who spent four seasons at West Ham between 2011
and 2015 presided over a last-minute win against Slovakia in his first game
as national team manager last weekend. And the Senegal international, who
was signed by Big Sam two years ago this summer believes he has what it
takes to make a success of the job. "I believe Sam can do a good job because
he knows how to win games," Kouyate told Match of the Day magazine. "He
knows how to make a team dig in and perform so I think he's going to do very
well. "I was happy for him because it was my dream to come to England. When
he signed me, he said 'If you come to England, give me two or three years
and you will become a superstar!' He's an unbelievable manager and a good
guy."
And when asked whether he felt team mate and West Ham captain Mark NBoble
deserves international recognition, Kouyate's reply was unequivocal. "If he
continues to play good then why not?" he said. "I don't understand why Mark
Noble, Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell didn't play at the Euros. Maybe
this year will be a good year for them; I'll cross my fingers!"

Antonio looking forward to FIFA 17

New England star Michail Antonio admits that he was "buzzing" to learn that
his trademark 'Homer Simpson' celebration is to be included in the new
version of FIFA. The latest iteration of the popular video game is released
later this month as and well as featuring West Ham United's new Olympic
Stadium home and latest signings, will also include one of the winger's most
recognised goal celebrations. Speaking to Match of the Day magazine,
Antonio said: "I noticed that [it was to be included] and I was buzzing with
that, to be honest! I'm gonna be doing that every time I score in FIFA 17!"
However it isn't just on screen that Antonio has been pleased with recent
developments. Having scored the winning goal against Bournemouth last month
he became the first Hammer to score a Premier League goal at the OS. "All
attacking players want to make their mark in history and now I have!" he
added, "I've got two marks so far, as I also played at Wembley for
Southampton and scored on my birthday. Who can say they've scored at Wembley
AND won a cup on their birthday?" And when asked to revealed what his next
celebration might be, Antonio remained tight-lipped - but gave some clues.
""I can't tell you," he said, "but it's still '90s related and it's going to
be a good one - it's going to be up there with the Homer!"

West Ham star: I rejected offers in Italy and Spain to complete Hammers move
ALVARO ARBELOA has revealed he rejected a number of offers before agreeing
to join West Ham.

Man-of-the-match Randolph happy with a point

Loan round up
WHUFC.com

Due to the international break, only two Hammers were in loan action this
weekend
First, Lewis Page played for Coventry City but they were defeated in League
One by Fleetwood Town
Josh Pask was involved in Gillingham's 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United on
Sunday

As England's top two tiers enjoyed a break due to international football,
only Lewis Page and Josh Pask were in loan action this weekend in the EFL.
Neither Hammer could help their side add points to their League One tally
though, as first Page's Coventry City went down 2-0 at the hands of
Fleetwood Town. The Sky Blues travelled to Highbury Stadium following on
from their midweek 4-2 Checkatrade Trophy victory over West Ham United's
youngsters, though Page was ineligible for Tuesday's tie. Short of
confidence in the league and sitting in the relegation zone however, Tony
Mowbray's men suffered a poor second half in Lancashire to concede two goals
and three points.

Chris Long, on loan himself from Premier League Burnley, collected a long,
diagonal pass from Kyle Dempsey and, composing himself in the penalty area,
slotted coolly under the keeper to break the deadlock after 58 minutes. And
with 19 minutes remaining, the result was put beyond Page – who played the
full 90 minutes for City – and Coventry, as substitute Martyn Woolford
crashed in at the near post to make it 2-0. The west Midlands outfit next
face Millwall, who this weekend recorded a 1-1 draw with Bradford City. Josh
Cullen, though, was not involved this week for the Bantams.

On Sunday, Josh Pask's Gillingham faced Sheffield United at home live on Sky
Sports, but were cruelly beaten as the Blades stole the points in injury
time. Bradley Dack's first half free-kick put Justin Edinburgh's men in
control, but Kieron Freeman turned home from close range in the 65th minute
to spark a second half comeback. The hosts looked to have held out for the
point until, one minute into time added on, West Ham centre-back Pask
handled a cross inside the area and Billy Sharp tucked away the penalty to
seal the win for United. Pask could face one of his parent Club teammates in
Cullen next weekend as Bradford travel to Priestfield in League One.
Recently loaned out Hammers Reece Burke, Enner Valencia, Doneil Henry and
Luka Belic will wait for debuts at their respective sides Wigan Athletic,
Everton, AC Horsens and Motherwell.

Adrian aims to seize Spain chance
WHUFC.com

Adrian is relishing every moment he spends with the Spanish national team
after earning his first call-up for La Rioja. The West Ham United goalkeeper
was rewarded for two-and-a-half seasons of consistently impressive
performances by receiving a call from new Spain manager – and fellow
goalkeeper – Julen Lopetegui. The 29-year-old has spent the past week
training alongside David de Gea, Pepe Reina and Spain's star-studded
outfield squad, and was on the bench for the 2-0 friendly win over Belgium
in Brussels on Thursday. Adrian looks set to be among the substitutes again
when Lopetegui's side kick-off their 2018 FIFA World Cup Group G qualifying
campaign against Liechtenstein in Leon on Monday evening, but the
Seville-born stopper is not in the mood to let not making his senior
international debut get him down. "I had to go abroad to find myself, and
through a lot of sacrifice and hard work, I've gotten the [national team]
call-up," he told Spanish newspaper Marca. "It is twice as hard to make it
into the national team if you play abroad, especially if you aren't playing
for one of the big clubs where there is a lot more scrutiny. "When you play
in a large club [in Spain] you have more impact. If you play abroad the
effort you need to make to be noticed is twice as big. In these three
seasons in the Premier I have been at a high level and produced some good
performances, so I was hoping that this moment would come sooner or later."

Unlike many international footballers, Adrian did not spend his formative
years playing age-group football for his country. Instead, he worked his way
steadily through the ranks at Real Betis Balompie, playing for the C and B
teams before making his first-team debut at the age of 25 in September 2012.
A year later, he was on his way to east London, and the ever-smiling
Spaniard has since become fans' favourite for his penchant for making
spectacular saves, and scoring an FA Cup shootout-winning penalty against
Everton in January 2015. "I am very pleased and happy," he confirmed. "It's
been a long journey from my debut at Betis to coming to England three years
ago. My name has always been there in the limelight and now Lopetegui has
given me the opportunity. "I want to seize it and vindicate it every minute
I have on the pitch."

When he returns to Rush Green later this week, Adrian will find the Club's
Spanish-speaking contingent has grown in his absence. The former Real Madrid
and Spain full-back and 2010 World Cup winner Alvaro Arbeloa has joined the
Hammers on a one-year contract – a move the goalkeeper has warmly welcomed.
"It is good to have another Spaniard at the Club and I'm sure he'll
contribute to us having a phenomenal season," Adrian observed. "I don't know
him personally and haven't spoken to him yet, but I'm happy to have another
Spanish teammate here!"

Cresswell - He looks a very good signing
WHUFC.com

Cresswell has been impressed with new signing Arthur Masuaku
The talented full-back believes Slaven Bilic will welcome the competition
for places
Cresswell is confident the squad can get back on the winning trail

Aaron Cresswell says he is relishing the fierce competition for places when
he makes a return to first-team action and has been impressed with the new
signings who arrived this summer.

Cresswell has been forced to miss the start of the season after suffering a
knee ligament injury during pre-season, but is making good progress and
hopes to step up his recovery over the next few weeks.

The talented full-back knows he faces a battle to win back his place in the
side after Slaven Bilic brought in Arthur Masuaku from Olympiacos during the
summer.

Masuaku has certainly impressed in his first three games for the Club and
Cresswell is pleased to see quality players being brought in to strengthen
the squad and take them onto the next level.

Cresswell said: "I hadn't heard too much of Arthur but I think he's done
very well.

"He's been one of the most consistent players of ours over the three games
we've played and he looks a very good signing.

"The gaffer has done very well this transfer window with the signings he's
made. Hopefully when we're all back together and fit and well, I'm sure it
will give the gaffer a headache, but I'm sure he'll like that headache to
pick from the squad we've got.

"I've been very impressed with the new signings. There have been quite a lot
of injuries to them though, and that's never nice for them personally coming
to a new Club.

"The first and foremost thing you want to do is impress, and for them to
come and be injured is frustrating but looking at the pre-season, you can
see they're very good players and I'm excited to see them play.

"The break has given us a two-week period to get some players back, though
obviously all of us won't be. I'm sure the gaffer and the team will be
delighted with the lads coming back in. It's what we're all looking forward
to and to get out there and train with each other and help the team."

Cresswell is hoping the Hammers can get straight back on the winning trail
against Watford on Saturday.

Slaven Bilic's side were always facing a tough start to the campaign with
away games against Chelsea and Manchester City, but despite the two defeats,
the West Ham full-back is convinced they can turn their season around,
starting with another home win at the weekend.

Cresswell added: "I don't think we could have asked for a much tougher start
and of course there was expectation, moving to the new ground and with new
training facilities and everything else.

"But as the gaffer said, just because we have a new Stadium, that doesn't
put points on the board.

"We knew as players that we won't take anything for granted. We want to work
hard and work for everything we get and I'm sure that's what we'll be doing
throughout this season."

Five Talking Points - International Break
WHUFC.com

The big subjects for discussion during the September international break as
West Ham United prepare to host Watford in the Premier League on Saturday...

A valuable experience
He may have tweeted his disappointment after not appearing against Slovakia
on Sunday, but when Michail Antonio looks back on his first England squad
experience, he should consider it a positive one. A year ago, Antonio had
yet to make a Premier League appearance for West Ham United following his
deadline day move from Nottingham Forest. Less than a year later, he has
established himself at the Hammers and earned his first senior England
call-up, spending a week working and living alongside the country's best
players. He may not have played, but Antonio will have learned a lot from
the experience alone, and that can only benefit him and his Club.

Adrian's chance?
An article similar to this one published on the Spanish National Team's
Official website has speculated that Adrian may be handed a Spain debut in
Monday's opening 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier with Liechtenstein. Like
Antonio, the West Ham United goalkeeper was pleasantly surprised to be
called-up by his country for the first time. Now, new Spain coach Julen
Lopetegui has suggested the No1 spot is up for grabs, and Adrian may be
given a chance to stake his claim for it in Leon.

Competition for places
Saturday's Premier League visit of Watford will offer manager Slaven Bilic
plenty of food for thought when it comes to team selection. The arrivals of
Simone Zaza and Alvaro Arbeloa and the returns from injury of Manuel
Lanzini, Dimitri Payet and Sofiane Feghouli mean competition for places is
at a seasonal high. Does Bilic go with Arbeloa or Sam Byram at right-back?
Does he stick with Havard Nordtveit or go with a more attacking central
midfield pairing? Does he put Lanzini, Payet and/or Feghouli back in the
starting XI and, if so, where? It all adds up to an eagerly-anticipated team
announcement come 2pm on Saturday!

Edimilson on target
On signing for West Ham United, new boy Edimilson Fernandes told how he is
'a player capable of getting the game going and adding excitement to the
action on the pitch'. One view of his thumping goal for Switzerland U21s in
their 3-0 European Championship qualifying win over Kazakhstan on Friday
evening confirmed that self-assessment! Fernandes may be just 20, but he has
the experience and all-round game to make his mark in the Premier League. If
he scores goals like his 25-yard rocket for his country, that mark could be
made sooner rather than later.

Zaza-zoom
Judging by the reports coming out of Rush Green, and the video clips which
have been posted on social media in recent days, Simone Zaza is looking
sharp!
The Italy international was not named in the Azzurri squad for the current
round of international fixtures, having featured at Euro 2016. For that
reason, along with an eagerness to make his mark at his new club, Zaza could
well zoom out of the blocks at the former Olympic Stadium this weekend.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Mixed Sunday for internationals
WHUFC.com

West Ham United players had a mixed Sunday on the international scene.

Youngster Declan Rice was the only winner among the four Hammers in action,
playing the full 90 minutes as Republic of Ireland U19 defeated Austria 1-0
in a friendly in Tallaght.

Elsewhere, midfielder Havard Nordtveit started Norway's 3-0 defeat by
Germany in Oslo, earning his 29 senior cap and finishing the 2018 FIFA World
Cup Group C qualifier with the captain's armband. Club-mate Martin Samuelsen
was an unused substitute at Ullevaal Stadium.

Michail Antonio was handed the No21 shirt and a watching brief for England
as Sam Allardyce's reign began with a hard-fought 1-0 Group F victory in
Trnava. The Hammers winger was named in a senior England squad for the first
time for the fixture, which England won courtesy of Adam Lallana's
95th-minute winner.

Finally, Reece Oxford started England U20s' 2-1 defeat by Brazil in
Kidderminster, making his first appearance at that level.

From the Terraces
WHUFC.com

Fan blogger Joe Difford analyses another successful transfer window for the
Hammers…

It is officially over. The long, often stressful, sometimes exciting summer
transfer window has come to an end and for the second year in a row, Hammers
fans are celebrating some truly brilliant business.

Even after our best Premier League season on record, it was clear that we
needed to bring in a few faces to strengthen the side and push on as we
entered our new home at the London Stadium.

First up was to bring in the impressive Manuel Lanzini on a permanent basis
after a stunning first season in claret and blue.

A number of young players have been brought in for the future, including the
exciting Toni Martinez, Domingos Quina and Edimilson Fernandes.

Others have been brought in to make a difference straight away, and we
smashed our transfer record with the signing of Andre Ayew from Swansea. The
attacker has played with Dimitri Payet before at Marseille and is proven in
the Premier League, so will hopefully make a huge impact when he returns
from injury in a few months.

Despite our midfield being one of the strongest areas of our side last
season, Havard Nordtveit has provided competition for the likes of Mark
Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate, and has been impressive already this season.

Sofiane Feghouli may go down as one of the best pieces of business in the
window across the league, coming in from Valencia on a free transfer and
already scoring a brilliant goal against Domzale in the Europa League. Like
Ayew, the winger has suffered an early injury setback, but will be fit and
raring to go very soon.

Jonathan Calleri, Gokhan Tore and Ashley Fletcher have all come in and given
us one of the most threatening attacking lines in the division, soon to be
led by Simone Zaza, one of the few players to have already scored at our new
home when Juventus visited in pre season.

Arthur Masuaku was brought in due to an injury to Aaron Cresswell, but the
way the new left back has started, it might be tough for Cresswell to get
back into the side, and competition is never a bad thing in the Premier
League.

When you look at how much we have spent this window compared to the quality
and quantity of players we have brought in, we must be up there with some of
the best in terms of how well the transfer window went. The icing on the
cake was the free signing of Alvaro Arbeloa on deadline day, who will do a
job on the pitch and be a great role model for the young Sam Byram.

All of the attention will be on these new individuals as they make their
debuts in claret and blue, but arguably one of the most significant pieces
of business this summer was keeping Dimitri Payet at the club.

When you look at how impressive the Frenchman was in the Euros this summer,
it is a sign of how far West Ham United have come that he wants to stay and
take us to the next level in the new era for our great football club.

WEST HAM TO LOSE YOUNG PROSPECT IDRIS KANU?
BY JOE DORAN ON 5 SEPTEMBER 2016 AT 2:21PM
TheWestHamWay.co.uk

West Ham academy player Idris Kanu has spent this week on loan at Manchester
United, where he is being considered for a permanent deal. The 16-year-old
is very highly rated by West Ham and it is easy to see why, as the young
forward bagged 2 goals in a 63-minute cameo for the Manchester United U-18
side against Middlesbrough. The striker twice found himself in good
positions to profit from the hard work of his team mates, demonstrating an
instinct that is so key to success at the top level.

It is thought that West Ham will do all they can to hold on to their player,
whom they view as one of the top prospects in their ranks. However, Kanu,
who made 17 appearances for the West Ham youth teams last season, seems to
be keen to fight for a move to Manchester. This would come as a frustrating
news to the Hammers, who have put real emphasis on their youth academy this
season and would wish to hold on to their own prodigies, as well as signing
them from other sides.

On the other hand, it is not yet a done deal, and Irons' fans with a good
memory will recall that the club once found itself in a similar position
with regards to young winger Oscar Borg. Borg had seemed destined to head
north to Manchester, before being convinced to stay. The club will hope they
can convince Kanu, like Borg (who eventually departed for Aston Villa), that
his route to success lies at the Olympic Stadium, and not further afield.

EXWHUEMPLOYEE EXCLUSIVE COLUMN: TRANSFER, INJURIES AND AWARDS
BY EXWHUEMPLOYEE ON 5 SEPTEMBER 2016 AT 12:15PM
TheWestHamWay.co.uk

It has been a week since I last wrote one of these and now that the dust has
settled on another window I felt like I should reflect upon what has been a
busy window.

So we got our right back in the end in Spanish World Cup winner Arbeloa. He
signed a one year deal with an option at the end of it. He is on £30k a week
and as Jack confirmed in our radio interview with him he turned down a
number of clubs to join us from different countries and even paid for his
own flight over here. I think this is a great signing because he provides
experience and this will benefit Sam Byram hugely. We had made enquires for
Iorfa of Wolves on loan but his club naturally didn't want to loan him and
would only sell him if they received a large transfer fee. We also went for
Micah Richards on loan but again Aston Villa demanded a huge loan fee plus
extra payments when he had paid a certain amount of games. So in the end we
move for Arbeloa as it had always been between those three to join the club.

Those of you who follow me on twitter will know I had been saying for weeks
and weeks that Payet would not leave. We set out stance at the start of the
window that we would not sell and we stuck to our word. The only club to
have enquired were PSG as I mouthed on air to the Sullivan lads but they
couldn't confirm on our transfer deadline show but agreed that was the club.
PSG got as far as speaking to David Sullivan and being told the price and it
went no further. No other club enquired despite reports in the press that
suggest otherwise. Payet had trained all week but the club decided not to
risk him at the weekend. In situations like this the club cannot really
win. Andy Carroll picked up a knock against Chelsea and then played at
Astra in the Europa League and hasn't played since, the club didn't want to
take the same risk with Payet. Payet went to France international duty
because it was believed that a week later he would be ready for France.

On transfer deadline day we actually received a loan offer for Valencia from
Everton which came as a surprise as it was thought that Everton were looking
at other targets and they emerged quite late. We had actually agreed to
sell Valencia and that fell through the day before, much to the club's
annoyance as they had lined up another forward to come in.

Bony was a forward that we were heavily linked with through out the window.
We originally nearly signed him before we got Andy Carroll but Sam opted to
sign the big man instead. The reason for not signing him this window was
that we had originally thought he was going to China for big money and we
decided that his heart may not be in it. It is now thought he will go to
China at the end of the season having signed the season loan with Stoke. It
was also thought that he may not have the desire still and that his career
and fitness is actually on the decline. We had also received the news that
Ayew and Carroll may not be out for as long as we first thought. So with
them three plus Calleri, Martinez and Fletcher that we had enough anyway.

In terms of injuries it looks like we will have a number of players back for
the Watford game. With only three injuries now (as opposed to the 10 we had
at one point) in Carroll (who is very close), Cresswell and Ayew. Lets hope
that it can stay this way. Sakho is not injured but isn't at match fitness
yet having missed the whole of the pre season matches, whilst he may feature
if injuries occur, the plan is to sell him in January.

Unfortunately it looks like we will be losing Idris Kanu, a very talented
youngster, to Manchester United. The club want to keep him but whether they
will be able to persuade him to stay I am not sure. We are also set to
lose Sakho (although he may have left by then), Kouyate, Feghouli and Ayew
to the African nations as their home countries have all qualified.

We play Watford next Saturday and this will be a real test of our team as we
cannot blame injuries now. I am extremely excited to see Zaza play. He has
apparently been on fire in training and the players have been very impressed
with him.

I would like to take this moment to say thank you for all the positive
comments that I, the site and the radio show received during the transfer
window. It is times like that when you can forget all the "haters" that
like to show their face and sit back and think that we are glad to have
provided a quality service. Last year I was nominated for the best social
media account at the football blogging awards. I got down to the final six
but lost out on the day to "Deluded Brendan". I was delighted to have got
that far but I would like to go one further. This year you can vote for me
in the best social account, the website in the best new blog and the radio
show in the best podcast. If we could get down to the final three I would
be over the moon as an acknowledgment for all the hard work that has gone in
over this summer window and beyond. Competition is a strange thing and a
couple of other "big" West Ham sites have instructed their writers not to
ever mention me or quote the site. This has been feed back to me by their
writers. It is frustrating at times but this would go along way to making
it seem all worthwhile. Also, for however many of the competitions we get
shortlisted for, I will do that many giveaways and Ill try to make them good
ones like you expect from the site!

Anyway enough of that, here is how to vote. To vote for me in the best
social media account. Simply copy this message word for word (including the
hashtag) and tweet it: I am voting in @TheFBAs for @ExWHUEmployee as the
Best #Social Football Account or click here: http://ctt.ec/kHeuU

The website will be going for the best new blog site. I think it would be a
great testament to all the writers, Tv presenters and producers, forum
admins and bloggers who put so much time into the site with no payment. To
vote for the site. Please copy these words into a tweet and tweet it or
click the link. I am voting in @TheFBAs for @WestHamWaycouk as the Best
#New Football Blog or click here: http://ctt.ec/4em0d

Finally, we will be entering our radio show into the best podcast category.
Of course we expect to lose the brilliant and established KUMB podcast but
the estimated 30k+ listeners we had on transfer deadline day may mean some
of you appreciate what we do too. To vote for the radio show as the best
podcast please copy the following into your tweet and post or click the

Fans blamed for capacity cap

Co-owner David Gold has told fans that West Ham's failure to secure a safety
certificate for an increased stadium capacity is the result of persistent
standing. Gold, speaking via the club's website and social media this
weekend suggested that the standing issue, which has caused numerous
problems at the Olympic Stadium already, was responsible for the Safety
Advisory Group's decision to refuse an application to extend the OS'
capacity to 60,000. However a number of supporters have since questioned
whether Gold's summary is entirely accurate - including KUMB Forum member
The Boleyn Hound. "We've had people without tickets coming in at half
time," he said. "We've had no segregation between home and away fans. "We've
had stewards straight out of college looking after 57,000 people, with
seemingly no experience whatsoever. There's not been a police officer in
sight at any of the four games I've attended and bags are not being checked
upon entry. "Yet we're supposed to believe that standing up is the thing
that is making the stadium unsafe?"

Bilic backs Payet to replicate Euro form
KUMB.com

Slaven Bilic believes the return of Dimitri Payet will prove to be a huge
boost for the rest of his squad.

Bilic, speaking via West Ham's website this weekend admitted that his team
has been missing their talisman but insisted that Payet is ready for the
challenge of a second season at the club - despite rumours linking him with
some of Europe's other top clubs.

"He's key to the team," said Bilic. "He can change a game and has the
qualities that the best players have. They influence their team-mates and
opponents - and that's what he does.

"He makes the team play better and the individuals around him are
benefiting. The team recognised that last year and that's why it was a
really good combination and a good season for us.

"It's crucial that he comes back as fit as he was last year and produces the
same football. He has to influence the games for us as he did last year,
with the help of everybody else.

"Last year he didn't do everything himself, but he was the cherry on top of
the cake.

"During the Euros he was one of two or three players - along with Antoine
Griezmann and Cristiano Ronaldo - that the world was talking about. And he
deserved it all.

"Like everybody else he still has to work hard as it won't come by default,
but I have no worries. He's playing well, he's matured and currently he's
sky-high in terms of recognition."

Dimitri Payet raring to go when West Ham play Watford, says Slaven Bilic
By James Kilpatrick
Last Updated: 05/09/16 2:32pm
SSN

Dimitri Payet's return to the first team will give West Ham United a major
boost, says manager Slaven Bilic. The 29-year-old had an impressive debut
season in England, scoring 12 goals in all competitions since joining from
Olympique Marseille in June last year. Payet, who has made just one
appearance in the league this season, was also joint second-top scorer at
Euro 2016 with three goals and was named in the team of the tournament after
helpin France reach the final. And after struggling with injury, Payet is
now set to play in Saturday's Premier League clash with Watford. Bilic
believes Payet's return will help improve West Ham's overall quality on the
pitch. "It is key for us if he can produce his best form again. He has the
qualities that the best players have and can help change a game. They are
influencing their team mates and opponents," Bilic told the club's website.
"He makes the team play better and everyone around him is benefiting. The
team recognised that last season." West Ham, who failed to make the Europa
League group stage for the second year in a row after being eliminated by
Astra Giurgiu last month, have managed only three points from their opening
three Premier League games.

Not scared of anyone: West Ham's Michail Antonio believes his fearless
approach earned him England shot
Michail Antonio was handed his first England call up by Sam Allardyce
The winger signed for West Ham United from Nottingham Forest in 2015
'I don't feel any full-back can handle me,' says Antonio
By DANNY GALLAGHER FOR MAILONLINE

Michail Antonio believes he was deserving of his first England call up, and
admits he does not fear any defenders in the Premier League. ntonio, 26, was
given his first glimpse of the international stage after new England manager
Sam Allardyce included him in his first squad. The West Ham winger was a
surprise inclusion in the Three Lions set up, with only one season of
Premier League football under his belt. Antonio was an unused substitute in
England's late 1-0 victory over Slovakia on Sunday, but the forward believes
he has earned his international chance. Speaking to Goal, Antonio said: 'Why
not? If you go off my stats I've scored around once in every three games so
far. There's a strong competition for those England spots right now because
people who are outside the top four are starting to turn up and starting to
perform.' The 26-year-old also believes players from teams outside of the
traditional top four are now being more closely looked at for England
positions. 'It's easy just to put people from the top four into the squad
but there are now players from Leicester, Spurs, West Ham, who are not
necessarily regulars at England but are showing that we have the sufficient
quality so the England manager should be looking at these players.
'I don't feel that any full-back can handle me if I do it constantly because
I know I've got the ability to beat them. 'This is because if I don't beat
them for pace then I can beat them for strength, if I can't beat them for
strength then I'll beat them for pace,' said Antonio.

Dimitri Payet makes West Ham play better and it's crucial he produces his
best again, says Slaven Bilic
STANDARD SPORT
Evening Standard

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic was delighted to keep hold of Dimitri Payet
during the summer transfer window and believes his return to the first team
will give the whole team a boost.
The Hammers refused to entertain offers for the Frenchman during the
transfer window, slapping a prohibitive £100m pricetag on the man they
bought from Marseille for £10m a year earlier.
The France international has made just one Premier League appearance this
term following a minor injury in West Ham's opener against Chelsea, but the
club expect him to be fit for Watford's visit on Saturday. "It is key for
us if he can produce his best form again," Bilic told West Ham's official
website. "He has the qualities that the best players have and can help
change a game. They are influencing their team-mates and opponents. West Ham
team news: David Gold hopeful over Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini returns
"He makes the team play better and everyone around him is benefitting. The
team recognised that last season." "It is crucial that he stayed. It's
crucial that he comes back fit and that he tries to produce what he was
doing last year." While Payet stayed, West Ham spent more than £40million on
additions - a combined fee that could rise if loan signing Simone Zaza
triggers a £20million permanent move by making a certain number of league
appearances. And Bilic believes the inflated market is crazy. He added:
"It's a bit too crazy especially if you watch television and you go like how
many minutes to go, how many seconds to go, if we break one billion and all
that. It's all crazy but you can't stop it.

Millwall boss "fed up" at speculation after defender linked with West Ham
By Richard Cawley - September 5, 2016

Millwall boss Neil Harris has chosen not to react to a press report
yesterday claiming West Ham United are interested in Mahlon Romeo. The
20-year-old right-back is a £2million target for the Premier League side,
according to the Sunday edition of The Sun. When asked about the link to
Romeo, Harris told the South London Press: "I've got no comment. I'm fed up
of commenting on paper speculation." Romeo signed a new long-term contract
with the Lions last season and still has two-and-a-half years to run on his
terms. He has proved to be a shrewd signing by Millwall after being released
by Gillingham. Romeo broke into the Lions first-team in the second half of
last season but missed the play-off fixtures after being sent off against
the Gills at the start of May. He has made eight appearances for Millwall
this season.

Daily WHUFC News - 5th September 2016

From the Boardroom - David Gold
WHUFC.com

It has been a long summer but finally the transfer window has closed and we are pleased with the players we have brought into the squad over the last few months.

We managed to secure an excellent piece of business on deadline day with the signing of World Cup winner Alvaro Arbeloa.

He provides strong competition for the right back position and gives Slaven the option to play Michail Antonio in a more attacking position where he is such a threat to the opposition.

Alvaro brings with him a wealth of experience and I am sure someone like Sam Byram will relish the chance to learn from one of the best right backs in recent years.

I can remember when we were in charge of Birmingham doing a similar kind of deal when we signed Steven Carr.

Steven turned out to be a fantastic signing and was my player of the season. There is absolutely no reason why Alvaro cannot do the same.

I want to pay tribute once again to David Sullivan, Slaven, Tony Henry and Andrew Pincher for making this deal go through and all the other great signings they have made over the summer.

Apart from the sale of James Tomkins who wanted first-team football and we fully understood his reason for wanting to join Crystal Palace, we have managed to keep hold of all our senior players which is a major bonus for everyone at the Club.

There was obviously a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Dimitri Payet and a number of reports said that he could leave, but that never happened and we wanted him to stay.

The player himself is very happy at West Ham United and we didn't entertain any approaches.

After what he did at the European Championship Finals during the summer, I understand why fans would be apprehensive and worried about his future, but myself and David Sullivan always stated that he would be going nowhere.

When we took over the Club back in 2010, we both promised to try and stop our best players being sold, especially to the other London clubs and we have managed to stop that in recent years.

We have said all along that we are an ambitious club and both myself and David Sullivan put our savings into making sure West Ham United can become one of the biggest Clubs in London and we want to close the gap.

The one area we can become number one is in the capacity of the stadium and I am confident the fans can help us get up to 66,000.

They can do this by refraining from standing throughout the game and not blocking other people's views.

I was so happy to see Michail Antonio earn a call-up to the England squad and I have always been one of his biggest fans.

He is exciting to watch and there is such a great expectation from the crowd everytime he gets the ball.

I know Sam Allardyce well and he likes winners and fighters and Michail fits all the requirements.

I am very excited for him and I know everyone at the football club is fully behind him and wishes him the best of luck ahead of the World Cup Qualifier against Slovakia on Sunday.

At last we have someone back in the England squad and I hope there will be many more to follow this season.

We are all looking forward to the next Premier League game against Watford and hopefully the long-awaited returns of Payet and Lanzini.

We had a great month in September last season and hopefully we can do the same again.

Simply Slaven - Part One
WHUFC.com

In the first part of our exclusive interview with Slaven Bilic, the Hammers manager looks back at a successful transfer window and explains why he brought World Cup winner Alvaro Arbeloa into the squad on deadline day.

Arbeloa has a wealth of experience having won the Champions League with Real Madrid and will provide strong competition with Sam Byram for the right back position.

Bilic said: "His CV is top of course. He was at Liverpool so he knows the Premier League. He had 10 years at Real Madrid and won everything. We were looking to strengthen that position, at least short-term and he was available and simply the perfect option what we needed.

"We watched a lot of Real Madrid games like everybody else and he's a great professional, a player of great experience and I'm sure he's going to help us a lot. Make no mistake, he's coming here as a player, not as a mentor, not as a coach. "

After bringing in 13 players over the summer, Bilic was thrilled to have secured the signing of Simone Zaza from Juventus and reveals what what the Italy international could bring to the Premier League this season.

He added: "He's still young, hungry, great left foot, goalscorer, bit of that drive and positive wildness on the pitch that is very important for the team, the crowd."

The Hammers manager explains why he made the decision to allow Enner Valencia to join Everton and says it could favour the player and the Club in the long-term.

Bilic was also thrilled to see Michail Antonio earn his first call-up to the England squad this week and says it is just rewards for a player who has a similar story to Jamie Vardy and has worked his way from non-league into the Premier League.

Don't miss Part Two on Sunday when Bilic reveals his delight at keeping Dimitri Payet at the Hammers and gives his feelings on the 'crazy money' that is being spent in the top flight.

Simply Slaven - Part Two
WHUFC.com

Slaven Bilic has been a busy manager in recent months bringing in 13 new players but maybe his biggest move of the summer was keeping Dimitri Payet at West Ham United.

Payet was one of the star performers at the European Championship Finals during the summer and showed once again why he is rated one of the best players in Europe.

The France international became a cult hero with the Hammers fans in just his first season in the Premier League and scored a number of goals, including some memorable free-kicks.

In Part Two of our exclusive interview with the Hammers manager, Bilic says he is thrilled that Payet has stayed at the Club and hopes he can grow even stronger this season.

Bilic said: "It is key for us if he can produce his best form again. He has the qualities that the best players have and can help change a game. They are influencing their team-mates and opponents.

"He makes the team play better and everyone around him is benefitting. The team recognised that last season."

With over £1billion being spent on new players during the summer, Bilic shares his views on the big money being invested by all the Premier League clubs.

He added: "It's a bit too crazy especially if you watch television and you go like how many minutes to go, how many seconds to go, if we break one billion and all that. It's all crazy but you can't stop it."

Cracking that glass ceiling
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 4th September 2016
By: Paul Walker

West Ham's owners are entitled to be happy with their biggest transfer window bonanza, more players, more money spent and all the hype they can muster - even if only a handful were through the door before the Europa League bolted.

This has been the craziest, greediest, window that our owner/director of football David Sullivan has ever worked in, but we all know that he just loves the buzz of it all and the limelight. The little fella just lives for these few months of cut and thrust, gambling, ducking, diving, dealing. A transfer window junkie.

We have 13 new players--if you include Manuel Lanzini's loan option converted to a permanent deal for around £10.2m.

But deep down, I wonder if Sullivan, Gold and Lady K have a nagging feeling that they still haven't cracked that glass ceiling. The one that gets them access to the world's greatest talents. I know it gnaws away at me.

However hard they have tried, however much money they have thrown at the problem, you sense that they have not really changed the perception of our club in the European market place. I wonder just how many of our new arrivals were their first choice targets.

Because time and again we have heard that players won't come because we are not in the Champions League. And the real problem is that they cannot be convinced that we will achieve that goal any time soon, despite all the big talk and naked ambition to reach the next stage of our development.

We left the Boleyn to aspire to be a true, great club. But the barriers stopping us, in terms of credibility, status and financial, are immense.

Players, the "show me the money" kind, look at our position, and then at the fierce competition in the Premier League for just four spots in the Champions League, and they don't believe we can crack it.

The introduction of FFP has created a situation that whatever money your owners have personally, they are not allowed to throw bundles of cash at players without any restrictions.

It's all changed since Manchester City were the most recent new face at the top table. When they acquired new owners, vast wealth and a new stadium, they had to throw obscene amounts of cash at players to encourage them to turn their backs on the Champions League and drop down in status.

Money was the only reasons Yaya Toure left Barcelona for City. But the real deal clincher there was that Toure could look at the vast wealth coming City's way from Abu Dhabi and be prepared to accept the promise that the club would be in the Champions League very, very soon.

City knew FFP was arriving, and they had to make the jump in class quickly or not at all. Now when players look at us, they see Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all spending well over £100m each this summer--with three of the world's top managers newly on the job--to make sure the likes of Leicester and, to a lesser extend our good selves--do not make monkeys out of them again.

Arsenal and Liverpool are not far behind in that approach. And Spurs. Last season's miracle of Leicester will not happen again, and we will--I fear-- do amazingly well to repeat our seventh spot from last term. The big boys have been stung once, and they didn't like it.

We have already seen the sign of things to come. Man Utd are a force again, City were amazing for 45 minutes against us last weekend, while Chelsea have no intention of being out of the Champions League for more than one season.

Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool have all spent vastly more than us. And potential big time targets of ours can see this all for themselves. They don't believe we can match these clubs.

These days players are so rich, their only currency is status and medals. That status means staying at the very top, and that's inside the Champions League bubble. And they cannot be convinced that by dropping down a level to us, they will only be out of the top bracket for a season.

Now we as fans, no doubt, feel differently. We did it last season, and but for a couple of horrible Diafra Sakho misses in that last game at Stoke, we would have avoided the lesser qualifying stages of the Europa League. And had a few referees not been blinded by the light that comes from the big clubs, we may well have sneaked fourth spot.

Slav put it clearly when he said, on arrival back from the US/Austria/Europa League grand tour, that players will not drop out of the Champions League to come to us unless you pay big, big money. Certainly if they are regulars in their current club sides.

Ad what really bothers me is that I cannot see that situation changing, unless, that is, Bilic and the boys produce miracles to grab fourth spot…a place that from now on gets English clubs straight into the Champions League group stages.

Our glorious leaders tried hard, oh how they tried, to get players to take a drop in status. It, frankly, took all their efforts to persuade Simone Zaza to move to the London Stadium from Juventus. But then, he had not been a regular in the Turin club's first team, and looking at this week's internationals, he was not in the Italy squad either. He has something to prove, and we can give him the platform - and double his wages.

I feel we have paid way over the odds for Andre Ayew, while Havard Nordtveit looks worryingly one-paced to me. We have hardly seen Sofiane Feghouli, although he scored a decent goal on his debut against Domzale. Then he picks up an injury against Juventus, seemingly trained the following week and then it is discovered to be a hamstring problem. I do hope that version of events that has been doing the rounds, is not the case. How do you train with a hamstring problem?

Anyway, Gokhan Tore, Slav's mate, has had a decent game against Bournemouth, producing a fine cross for Michail Antonio to score the winner. Apart from that he has been a nightmare.

Youngsters like the impressive Ashley Fletcher, Jonathan Calleri, Toni Martinez and Domingos Quina all look like players for the future. Mind you, Martinez, only 19 I believe, seems to have that scoring knack and if he keeps finding the net he will force his was into the side.

Arthur Masuaku had a dodgy first half hour at Chelsea, but has done pretty well ever since, although how he stayed on the pitch at the Etihad escapes me. No-one has seen Edimilson Fernandes yet, so it's wait and see there.

And then, of course, we have acquired probably the most decorated player ever to wear our shirt in 33 year-old Alvaro Arbeloa. I had the good fortune to see him a lot while he was at Liverpool, and he is a class act. No frills, knows the job, top quality defender.

Last season he was playing in the Champions League at Real Madrid, and was a legend there. I just hope he has still got it in him. But he's a World Cup winner, Champions League winner and European Championship winner. Plus La Liga. Don't anyone ask him to show them his medals, it could take all day.

He arrived on the last day of the window, and it is suggested he paid his own air fare and his agent took a lesser cut. Read that last bit again everyone, you won't see that again any time soon.

But even then it seems we tried for Leicester's Danny Simpson first. This is the same Danny Simpson with a recent conviction for trying to "throttle" his girl friend, turning up for his community service in a Lamborghini and then wonders why someone takes his picture! You cannot make it up.

He seems to be another graduate from the Ravel Morrison/Manchester United school for not knowing how to treat women properly!

Maybe Sam Byram has dodged a bullet there. Slav seemingly wanted someone to mentor him as he learns how to play in the Premier League without getting booked. I feel young Sam will learn more from Arbeloa than another Mancunian toe-rag.

The Spaniard is a consummate professional, nothing flash but has been one of the best right backs in Europe over the past decade. OK, so I have given him the big build-up, I just pray he has still got it!

So, including loan fees and not the £17m it will cost to turn Zaza's loan into a permanent deal, we have spent around £53m, and offset that with £10m from the James Tomkins deal, and £1.5m loan fee for Enner Valencia's move to Everton. Whether we ever seen the £14.5m it will cost Everton to make that a permanent deal remains to be seen.

I am pleased that Pedro Obiang is still here, he did 't get much of a chance last term but is a solid cover right through midfield. All in all, this window is as good, realistically, as the Davids could expect.

They shot for the moon last summer and got Dimi Payet, but it took a while for Lanzini and Angelo Ogbonna to find their feet and it will be the same with this summer's new recruits.

I reckon around 18 players have left, if you include the Academy culling, and what we have acquired since looks an overall improvement.

But that glass ceiling is still there. Slav and the boys have to finish fourth or above to give Sullivan the chance next summer to offer players Champions League football and know he can deliver. So, for now, it seems time for our owner to take a break, have a lie down (not in a hospital bed again) and pray things work out the way he, and all of us, hope.

One final point. There has been a lot of moaning and groaning about the new stadium and the teething troubles. All that will end if the side start winning, and winning well. Over to you, Slav.

Window of opportunity

At the stroke of midnight on Wednesday, 31 August many West Ham fans might have breathed a sigh of relief with the close of the transfer window. Despite nagging rumours to the contrary Dimitri Payet stayed at the club, 10 new first-teamers had signed and only a couple of players departed. However, doubts remain – following successful summer business the previous two seasons this window felt less than spectacular with questions being raised regarding the overall strength of the squad.

Before going any further three things need to be acknowledged in mitigation; firstly the inflation in transfer fees brought about by the most recent TV deals – when a striker as limited as Christian Benteke is fetching a £32million transfer fee it's not easy find value in the market. Likewise the threat of Britain leaving the EU has resulted in sterling (no, not Raheem) taking a bit of a buffeting on the international markets, effectively making foreign transfers around 10 per cent more expensive. And finally the club could not have anticipated the second successive early elimination from the Europa League at the hands of Romanian side Astra Giurgiu – with a potentially long campaign in the offing it was easy to see how volume in player trading may have taken precedence over quality.

Once manager Slaven Bilic's tactics are examined it becomes even more difficult to detect a unity or coherence around summer purchases and it's becoming increasingly difficult to know what sort of team the Croat's West Ham are. Lacking resilience at the back the squad lacks the pace in midfield and quality at full-back to play a counter-attacking style. A quick glance at match statistics would dispel any thoughts of them being a possession side either. In conclusion, the Hammers seem little more than a Payet side (with a sideways nod to the abilities of Manuel Lanzini). Take those two out of the team, as has been the case so far this season, and the first XI looks decidedly average.

Other sides have bought well, meaning it will be difficult to better last year's seventh place especially if the results against the better sides (as they already appear to be) dry up. A feature of Bilic's side is how seldom they dominate inferior opponents and just two wins against the bottom three last season points to some potential banana skins this term.

The area of least concern is between the sticks. Despite the occasional histrionics and a weakness off his line Adrian has proved himself a good quality goalkeeper and has deservedly been handed a call-up into the Spanish squad. Darren Randolph is a competent if not brilliant deputy and currently an Ireland regular. Likewise, at left-back Arthur Makuasu appears to offer the injured Aaron Cresswell real competition and the team greater defensive solidity in an area hitherto lacking both.

At centre-back James Tomkins has left his boyhood club for a very reasonable £10m – especially bearing in mind he was a fourth choice behind Angelo Ogbonna, Winston Reid and James Collins. However, Reid hasn't yet returned to his pre-injury form of last season and is looking hurried and out of touch. The signing on a free from Mönchengladbach of Håvard Nordtveit as a utility defender/holding midfielder is an expression of the foolhardiness of aiming for a bigger squad at the expense of quality. Although technically good, two-footed and decent in the air the Norwegian international lacks the pace for a midfield spot and the defending ability to challenge the regular centre-halves. Unkind comparisons with former Hammer Radoslav Kováč won't be long coming.

The situation up front has been some way less than ideal. Enner Valencia lost form and confidence and has been shipped off to Everton on a season's loan. Although the Ecuadorian never for a moment stopped giving his all, his pace and fierce shot never made up for a lack of footballing nous. Diafra Sakho has embarked on a huge strop and can be considered persona non grata. A real shame as his form when first at the club alongside Valencia and supported by Stewart Downing was nothing short of sensational. One way or another Bilic has rid the club of all three – on the face of it an odd judgement.

Andy Carroll is a limited player despite an underrated left foot. But his lack of link-up play doesn't suit Bilic at all. And yet another in a seemingly endless run of injuries could be a positive as it pushed the club into the market. Nothing sums up the transfer window better than Chairman David Sullivan's earlier pledge to buy a £30m striker before finding nobody wanted to play for The Irons and finally paying Swansea £20m for a right winger-cum-forward only for André Ayew to rupture a thigh muscle half an hour into his debut. A reciprocal axiom to the one about fortune favouring the brave?

Jonathan "Julian" Calleri seems a punt for the future and little can be read into his form. Yet the signing of Simone Zaza from Juventus on a loan-to-buy move for £28m if not a full-scale panic buy certainly displayed signs of the jitters. Despite being a full Italian international Zaza only scores at a rate of one in three, lacks blinding pace, isn't dominant in the air but works hard. Sound familiar? Yes, if it wasn't for the £20m plus disparity in transfer fee it's difficult to distinguish him from Sakho.

Perhaps the brightest signings are Swiss midfielder Edimilson Fernandes from Sion and French-born Algerian international Sofiane Feghouli from Valencia. Although a relative unknown Fernandes is expected to go straight into the side to supplement the attacking strength of Payet and Lanzini. Feghouli is lightning quick, has a good touch and as proved against FK Domžale an eye for goal from wide.

Which brings us to the most vexing area of the pitch, the right side. Following injuries to on-loan Carl Jenkinson and young signing Sam Byram last season the right-back position was filled by Michail Antonio, a natural winger. Even the least educated football brain could see the former Forest player was positionally all over the place in defence. All except Bilic who insisted he could convert the player and concentrated on filling the squad with right wingers. Some sympathy should be extended to the manager – it is one of the less appealing traits of the Premier League players are bought and sold as seen, with little attempt at development.

Meanwhile Feghouli was followed by both Ayew and perplexingly the woeful Gökhan Töre – the squad began to resemble a Theresa May cabinet so full was it of right-wingers. The Turk wasn't bought but arrived on loan due to Bilic being the only person in the club to rate his former player. Three league games into the season and the penny dropped for Bilic as a series of poor defensive performances from Antonio culminated in the acquisition of Alvaro Arbeloa from Real Madrid. So there we are, one inexperienced and one over-the-hill right back, four right-wingers.

This all taps into the abrasive personality of Bilic. Ever the idealist he doesn't appear able to tolerate deficiencies in his players even if they are of his own creation. Antonio and Ogbonna have been ruthlessly and humiliatingly withdrawn during games (the latter before half-time on his full debut) while Morgan Amalfitano and Sakho have suffered from off-field fallings-out. Each may be acceptable but taken together they appear less the acts of a manager and more of a dictator.

Let's hope our manager turns out more Josip Tito than Slobodan Milošević.

West Ham team news: David Gold hopeful over Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini returns
TOM DUTTON 11 hours ago0 comments
Evening Standard

West Ham co-chairman David Gold is hopeful both Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet will return to the starting XI for Saturday's Premier League match with Watford. Both are recovering from injuries but had been expected to return to the team for last weekend's league match against Manchester City.
Payet's case was made all the more curious because he had been named in the France squad ahead of West Ham's trip to the Etihad Stadium and subsequently came off the bench in Thursday's friendly against France. Lanzini, meanwhile, was introduced against City following his recovery from a knee injury sustained ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics with the Argentina squad. But Gold expects both to be knocking on the door when West Ham host Watford at London Stadium after the international break. "We are all looking forward to the next Premier League game against Watford and hopefully the long-awaited returns of Payet and Lanzini," wrote David Gold in a message to supporters on the club's official website. The West Ham chief also confirmed the club knocked back all interest in Payet during the transfer window. Jack Sullivan, son of the club's co-owner David, revealed the Hammers had quoted £100million to one interested party and it halted negotiations. And Gold added: "There was obviously a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Dimitri Payet and a number of reports said that he could leave, but that never happened and we wanted him to stay. "The player himself is very happy at West Ham United and we didn't entertain any approaches."

Cheikhou Kouyate: I want Champions League football for West Ham and 'unbelievable' Slaven Bilic
STANDARD SPORT 48 minutes ago0 comments
Evening Standard

Cheikhou Kouyate wants to help West Ham achieve their ambition of playing in the Champions League after making the move from Upton Park to the London Stadium this season. The Hammers enjoyed an impressive 2015/16 season, with Slaven Bilic's side pushing for Champions League qualification until a late loss of form saw the club finish seventh in the Premier League. Expectations are high this term following relocation to the London Stadium in Stratford, and Kouyate - who played in the Champions League with Anderlecht before joining the Hammers in 2014 - told Goal that he is ready to play in Europe's elite club competition once again. "Playing football is my dream and I've come to West Ham to help the team and to help them qualify for the Champions League," said Kouyate. "In my opinion I can play in the Champions League because I've done it before with Anderlecht and it was a very nice experience. I want to have this experience with West Ham." Kouyate opened the Hammers' official London Stadium account with two goals against NK Domzale in the Europa League qualifying rounds, but Bilic's side failed to reach the group stages as they were shocked by Astra Giurgiu at home. Despite Europa disappointment for the Hammers, Kouyate says he will treasure his goals against NK Domzale, adding: "I'm very happy to score the two goals because I will never forget this moment. "If I have kids I will tell them your father scored the first goals at this stadium."

Kouyate also had kind words for Bilic, saying: "He helps me everyday and everyday I become better and better and in my experience the manager is unbelievable.
"Every time I have something to say he listens to me, he always helps me. In the game he will talk to me clearly and tell me 'this is good' or 'this is bad.' I like him a lot because he is close to every player."
