Head of Medical and Sports Science Stijn Vandenbroucke with his latest update – in association with Spire Roding Hospital...

Hello everyone,

We will start with some really positive and encouraging news for all West Ham United fans, which is that Manuel Lanzini has returned to training with the squad. Manuel joined the team on the training pitch on Sunday after recovering from the thigh problem he suffered in the Barclays Premier League win over Liverpool on 2 January. He will train for the full week and will be available to play a part in Sunday's Emirates FA Cup tie at Blackburn Rovers.

To continue the good news theme, Winston Reid and Diafra Sakho will both return to training with the squad on Monday if this week's rehab progresses as planned. Winston has a good chance to be available for the Barclays Premier League visit of Sunderland on 27 February, while Diafra has been out for a longer period he needs more training days.

Unfortunately, two players suffered injuries in the 2-2 draw at Norwich City on Saturday and will not be available for Sunday's trip to Ewood Park. Enner Valencia suffered a right ankle injury in a tackle during the second half and came off, while Andy Carroll injured his adductor.

James Tomkins is progressing well with his treatment after suffering a calf injury at Southampton, but he will be sidelined for five to six weeks.

Westley – 'It's a mouth-watering tie'
WHUFC.com

Reflecting on the news that the Development Squad have been dealt a home time with Liverpool in the Barclays U21 Premier Cup semi-final, Academy director Terry Westley described it as a "mouth-watering tie."

Following wins over Exeter City, Fulham and Blackburn Rovers in the previous rounds, the Hammers will host English giants Liverpool.

Looking ahead to semi-final clash, Westley said: "It's a great draw, out of all the teams, that is the most attractive match. It's a bonus that it's at home.

"Hopefully we get the biggest crowd at Rush Green we've seen in a while. It's a huge challenge for our young players. As everyone knows, Liverpool are a massive club, with a great tradition and a very strong Academy and U21 set up. It's a real challenge for us.

"When you get to this stage, it's about how much we want to win it. We've earned the right to be here, we beat a tough Exeter City side away, and then we've beaten Fulham and Blackburn so it hasn't been easy.

"Now we've got this mouth-watering tie with Liverpool and we're won step away from the final.

"Hopefully, it'll dwarf all attendances we've had so far, even though we've had some impressive gates this season. A semi-final, against Liverpool, it should be a great occasion for everyone."

In recent months, the Development Squad have gone from strength to strength, enjoying a surge in form while sending a number of players out on loan to various teams in the Football League.

Westley continued: "We cover all games where our players go out on loan as part of their loan plan, to help monitor their progress.

"Josh Cullen at Bradford, Martin Samuelsen at Peterborough and Lewis Page at Cambridge United have all done well. Reece Burke particularly has been outstanding for Bradford, over a long period of time.

"The next step now is to get a good preseason in them and challenge the first team. Then we need to reassess, maybe look to get them into the Championship. At the end of the day, we need to be producing players good enough for West Ham.

"They've all shown that they are more than capable of competing in the Championship, people are talking about us again, and that's a good thing for us and our reputation."

The winners of the semi-final will face the winner of Huddersfield v Millwall/Hull City

*The date, venue and times of the fixture will be announced shortly

Obiang wants FA Cup success
WHUFC.com

West Ham United midfielder Pedro Obiang would love the chance to help the Hammers secure FA Cup glory this season and make it a memorable first season with the east London club. Obiang has produced some of his best form in the competition this season and played a major role in the memorable victory over Liverpool in the last round. The Spanish midfielder realises the importance of having a good run in the competition and knows it would be a fairytale ending for the club if they could finish their final season at the Boleyn Ground by winning some major silverware.

With competition for places so fierce in the West Ham starting line-up, the FA Cup is currently providing the perfect platform for the talented midfielder to remind Slaven Bilic of his qualities and he is determined to take his chance again when they play Blackburn on Sunday. Obiang said: "It is maybe more important for me because it is a competition where I have been playing more regularly and I see it as my chance to shine. I want us to do as well as I can. "I am very determined to do well at West Ham United. It can be difficult when you are not playing, but my team-mates have been having a fantastic season and there have only been some small gaps for me to fill. I will keep trying until I get my chance more regularly. "I am confident West Ham can achieve big things as a club. We have been playing a lot of games recently with a fairly small squad and most of the players have had the chance to feature and show what they can do. "It motivates me and can improve me as a player to have strong competition for places because our job is to give the manager strong decisions to make. "That is exactly what we are trying to do and it doesn't matter if one name is bigger than the other, it still gives the manager a hard choice to make and shows the quality we have got in the squad.
"The FA Cup is an important competition and one we want to win."

Obiang has another big reason for wanting the Hammers to do well in the FA Cup this season – so he can get to play his first game at Wembley.
The former Atletico Madrid midfielder has certainly come close after he was part of the Spain Under-18 squad that played England a few years ago, but never got the chance to play in the game. Obiang added: "I have not had the chance to play at Wembley and have only seen it on television so I would love the chance to play there. "I came to England with the Spain Under-18 team but didn't get the chance to play there. We all travelled to London but unfortunately I didn't play. It would be nice to make up for that and go back there. "I know a lot about the FA Cup and every game is important for the team and the season."

Former Player Blog - Brian Dear
WHUFC.com

1965 European Cup Winners' Cup winner Brian Dear believes West Ham United's future is a bright one...

I think we are doing great at the moment. We are through to the last 16 of the FA Cup and we came back well at Norwich in the Premier League on Saturday and could easily have gone on to win that game in the end.

We have got some really big games coming up, starting with Sunday's FA Cup tie at Blackburn Rovers, then the home league games with Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur.

Even as a West Ham man, I have to say I watched Tottenham play Manchester City on Sunday and they have got some good players, but I don't think they are too different to us.

If we had not had so many injuries to key players like Winston Reid, James Tomkins, Dimitri Payet, Diafra Sakho and Manuel Lanzini this season, I believe we could have been up there with them challenging.

If all of those boys had been fit, most of them would have been in the side and we'd have probably collected more than the 40 points than we have already.

It has been hard for Slaven Bilic at times, but we have done well and are in a good position going into the final couple of months of the season.

We go to Blackburn on Sunday and we have got a great chance of getting through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

When you look back at the last round and the replay against Liverpool, it couldn't have gone any better, could it? If it was the last FA Cup tie at Upton Park, to win it in the last minute was special.

I've been coming back to games for 40 years and that was one of the loudest atmospheres I've heard in a long time, when Angelo Ogbonna's header hit the back of the net!

Next season, we will have an even bigger crowd cheering us on at the new Stadium and I think it's great what the Board have done with the pricing of the Season Tickets there.

I recently went down with my son and two grandsons to the Reservation Centre and sorted out our seats for next season and we've got a great view, so they're all happy about that!

I know we will all miss Upton Park – I loved playing there and have some great memories of the place – but I also know a lot of Season Ticket Holders and supporters who are looking forward to moving to a bigger new home in Stratford.

Driving in and out of games at Upton Park is a nightmare, whereas the new Stadium is going to be so easy to get to. I live in Southend and taking the train into Stratford will be simple.

It's going to be easy to get to the new Stadium on the Greater Anglia line out of Liverpool Street, the c2c line from Southend and Basildon, and on the Underground and Overground.

Getting back to the here and now and we've got this FA Cup tie at Blackburn to look forward to. Although we are the favourites, I played in games where we came unstuck against lower division opposition.

We need to go up there and put out a strong team and if we play well, we'll have too much for them. Then, all we want is a home draw in the quarter-finals and we'll have a great chance of going back to Wembley!

ExWHUEmployee's exclusive column: Injuries hit before the Blackburn match. Batshuayi the number one target
February 17, 2016
TheWestHamWay.co.uk
ExWHUEmployee

The Norwich game showed me how far we have come as a club this year. We didn't play that well, there was a number of individual mistakes yet we ground out a draw and could have actually gone on to win the game had we taken some chances at the end of the game. Emenike missed the obvious chance at the end and to log onto twitter to read the abuse he was getting is something I just find so baffling. It is seriously way too early to judge someone's career as quickly as they are for him. The same people made the same mistake with Randolph and look where he is now. The turning point for me in the game was the introduction of Moses and Carroll. I felt both, especially Moses, were the main reasons we turned the result around. It would be good to see Moses play like this more often as, other than the first few games, he has been largely disappointing. I expected more from him and I hope he will now start to deliver.

We play Blackburn in the FA Cup this weekend and it is amazing that we have sold 7,200 tickets for the game which is televised. Not many other clubs would do this and we can rightly claim to have the best fans in the world. The fact is we could probably sell more but the club cannot get anymore as we have been given a whole stand and this would go beyond that stand's capacity.

Unfortunately we have picked up a couple of injuries before the Blackburn game in training apparently. Bilic wants to field a strong team but a lot of these selections have been dictated by the injuries that we have. I have heard from a reliable source that both Carroll (groin strain) and Valencia will miss the game which means Emenike will be up front. We will have to see from Bilic's press conferences whether this is the case and I hope that it isn't. We will also be missing Reid, Sakho, Tomkins and O'Brien. This should see Antonio play at right back with Victor Moses coming in to take his wing position because Byram is cup-tied. One boost that we have is that Lanzini should be fit to play a part from the bench and Kouyate from the start. Sakho should also be able to play against Big Sam's Sunderland when they come to town.

The return of Lanzini is important for obvious reasons but also because it could determine whether we sign him or not. I was told it is 98% certain that we will a couple of weeks ago but the club really want to see that he recovers from his injury completely and that they are not potentially signing an injury prone player.

The club have been disappointed, like we all have, that we have had so many injuries. It is something we really want to avoid and we have a clear strategy of now not signing injury prone players. Therefore the story today of how we are looking to sign Robben for £16m this summer is obviously not true. You can tell by the way the article is written, with it also saying it is unlikely we would sign such an injury prone player, that they are going for the senstational headline to get attention, as a relatively unknown site. It is an old media trick when there is not really a story.

It is a typical West Ham move that we should sell a forward and then potentially lose a couple through injury but this looks like it could be the case with Jelavic having now moved to China. This fee is nowhere near the £9m that is being sensationalised and incorrectly reported and is around £2m which represents a slight loss on what we paid for him. This transfer was first mentioned exclusively here in my column at the start of January:

The main summer target that we want to bring in, which we have mentioned before, is Michy Batshuayi from Marseille. Spurs are also interested in the same player (shock) but we are confident and prepared to try anything to land the player. He has a great relationship with Payet and this may swing things in our favour. Regardless of this I have heard the board are prepared to "move heaven and earth" to land him and will consider many options. We have also shown an interest in Nicolas Nkoulou and Georges-Kévin N'Koudou and if we could pull any of these off it would be great as they are quality players and the last two would give great potential to some brilliant chants. All three players have been covered by our scouts in "the scouts" section, I wonder why ;-) Be sure to check the reports and the videos of them.

The club have been very impressed with the performances of Reece Burke and Josh Cullen on loan at Bradford City and think that both have a huge future at the club. Bradford are pushing for a playoff spot in league 1 and the experience both players are gaining from this loan is something the club have been very grateful for. The club will continue to look at potential loan deals for some of our younger players because Terry Westley believes, and I agree, that this is the best way to develop our young talent. Samuelsen and Elliot Lee are also benefiting from loan moves at Peterborough and Colchester. Speaking of Samuelsen this boy is as serious talent and we will be bringing an exclusive article on this soon.

Mark Noble's testimonial is almost set to sell out and this is a mark of the respect and esteem that he is held in at West Ham. It is very rare that players sell out grounds for their testimonials, in fact it would be the first time in West Ham's history that a player has. Mark's performances surely deserve an England call up at the moment but unfortunately I cannot see this happening under the current manager which is a great shame.

The Big Interview - Mark Noble - West Ham Official Site

West Ham United skipper Mark Noble says Saturday's 2-2 draw at Norwich City was the embodiment of the character needed for them to succeed over the final three months of the campaign.
After a draining extra time win at Liverpool in the week, they had to fight to come from 2-0 down at Carrow Road, with Noble himself grabbing a fine equaliser.
Now, with an FA Cup fifth round tie at Blackburn Rovers looming, plus league games against Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur, the Academy graduate is ready for a big end to the season.
When you talk about character and resilience, I guess that's the buzzword after Saturday at Norwich?
MN: "Yes, especially after the last couple of weeks we've had. We've had games Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday, and we obviously had the emotion of scoring in the last minute against Liverpool. That was 120 minutes of football which went to the wire and Norwich was an important game for us.
"We knew it was going to be tough, because they are fighting for points, but the way we came back and the belief we've got as a squad shone through. The subs we made had a huge impact and I thought we deserved a point in the end."
Victor Moses is a real impact player for you isn't he?
MN: "That's Victor. He's got that in him. When he and Andy Carroll came on they had that impact and he could have scored two goals himself. He was fantastic, he set up the first one with a great run and set up some vital chances for us.
"That's what we've got as a squad now, we've got the players to do that. The manager has players at his disposal to turn it around and as soon as they scored the second we really took the game to them."
Most people might have thought, 'they played 120 minutes on Tuesday, they're 2-0 down - they won't get back into it'...
MN: "We were 2-0 down, one a fantastic strike from Robbie Brady, but in the end we probably should have won it. The character and belief we have in the squad is fantastic."
You scored the equaliser - one of the best of your career?
MN: "Yes, probably. I was playing holding midfield at the time, but I saw the ball go forward and I saw Dimi on it. I know he's going to look for a pass, so I made the run, he rolled it across to the edge of the box and I just stuck it away. It was fantastic and gave us the foot up to go on and try to win the game."
After a week like this do you feel there's a bandwagon rolling for West Ham?
MN: "I hope so. There's the FA Cup game against Blackburn on Sunday, we've had a few days to rest after the couple of weeks we've had, and our league position allows us to go into the Cup game and give everything. It would be a fantastic thing for the Club to have a run in the FA Cup in the last season at Upton Park."

Antonio looking forward to Ewood return - West Ham Official Site

Ahead of the Hammers journey to Lancashire to face Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup, inform winger Michail Antonio is looking forward to returning to Ewood Park.
Last season, the 25-year-old scored an impressive brace for Nottingham Forest which including an 88th minute equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 encounter.
Looking ahead to Sunday's cup tie, Antonio is hoping to add to his tally of four goals: "Last time I played at Ewood Park I scored two goals so it'll be nice going back there. One was a header; one was a volley from 25 yards out so, hopefully, I can do that again!
"Blackburn are a side where they are going to throw everything at us. They'll think 'Ah, they're a Premier League team, we've got nothing to lose here, and the pressure is off us.'
"So the pressure will be on us, especially with the form we are in right now. Having said that, I think it'll be a decent game."
The Londoner has already made his mark in the Hammers' blossoming cup run with a fine volley against Liverpool in the fourth replay to set up one of the most memorable game under the lights at the Boleyn in recent times.
And while such an important goal may have bloated some egos, Antonio is keeping his feet firmly on the ground: "For the rest of the season, I just want to keep performing well, try and stay in the team and I'll probably set more goals for myself next season.
"Right now I'm just focused on staying in the team; keep playing well and try and improving."
While the winger is impressively level headed, he can't help but be drawn in the history and the romanticism of the FA Cup.
He continued: "It's very important, growing up everyone watched the FA Cup, everyone believes that it's one of those cups where anything can happen.
"I'd go FA Cup over a Top Six finish. It's one of those things where you don't get remembered for coming sixth, but if you win the FA Cup everyone remembers that, you have a medal to show for the rest of your life. As a kid you always dream of playing in it and as a player you always dream to win it."

Joint-Chairman - We have amazing support - West Ham Official Site

Joint-Chairman David Sullivan has nothing but praise for the West Ham United supporters after they sold out the 7200 allocation for the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Blackburn.
Despite the long trip to Ewood Park, the Hammers fans once again showed their phenomenal support and will travel in their thousands for a huge game in the north west on Sunday.
The remaining tickets had only gone on General Sale on Tuesday but they were snapped up within 24 hours.
Mr Sullivan is hoping the fans will make it another day to remember as the Hammers look to reach the quarter-final stage of the competition.
He said: "It shows the passionate way our supporters love the FA Cup and this is for a game on live TV. I'm humbled by our support.
"We asked for more tickets from Blackburn, but sadly there was no way they could segregate us and give us more.
"I'm sure the fans will provide an amazing atmosphere on Sunday and hopefully we will be too good for them, but in football you never know. We will be fielding a strong side."

West Ham join Premier League race for Norwegian international Havard Nordtveit - TMW

West Ham United are the latest Premier League team to have their name linked with a potential summer move for former Arsenal youngster Havard Nordtveit.
TMW are reporting that The Hammers are now keeping tabs on the Borussia Monchengladbach player - who is out of contract at the German side in the summer.
Liverpool were said to be keen by The Mirror at the weekend and the same report that claims West Ham are keen mentions Everton and Leicester City as potential transfer rivals.
The Norwegian international's current deal with Gladbach expires in the summer and despite a new deal being on offer he has been considering his future over the past few months.
West Ham would certainly be benefiting if they did bring him into the club.
Nordtveit is an excellent talent who can operate in a number of positions with ease. He is best suited to a defensive midfield role but started his career as a central defender and has also operated at right-back when needed.
He would add genuine depth and versatility to the West Ham squad - which can prove vital in the tougher stages of the Premier League season.

West Ham among three Premier League clubs eyeing transfer of Augsburg midfielder Dominik Kohr - The Mirror

The 22-year-old set to face Liverpool this week is also being monitored by West Ham and Southampton, as well as several Bundesliga sides
The Premier League trio are monitoring the 22-year-old Augsburg midfielder along with a number of Germany's leading clubs.
They will get a chance to see how Kohr copes against top-flight opposition when Augsburg host Liverpool in the first leg of a Europa League last 32 tie on Thursday.
Kohr came through the ranks at Bayer Leverkusen.
But he has really caught the eye since moving to Augsburg - initially on loan in January 2014 - where he has become a key player after being handed regular first team football.
The Germany Under-20 international's current deal expires in 2019.
And he could be on the move this summer if Augsburg can be persuaded to sell.

Tottenham transfer news: Spurs confident of signing Michy Batshuayi despite West Ham interest - Independent

Spurs have been long-term admirers of the Belgian international who has scored 21 goals in 46 appearances
Tottenham Hotspur are locked in a battle with West Ham United to sign Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi, according to reports.
The title-chasing Spurs have been long-term admirers of the Belgian international who has scored 21 goals in 46 appearances for the Ligue 1 club. According to the Daily Mirror, Mauricio Pochettino is growingly increasingly confident of beating West Ham to his signature as their bid to secure Champions League football continues in earnest.
The Hammers have their own reasons to be positive, however, with the success of Dimitri Payet acting as a beacon to other players in the French league to join the 28-year-old in Slaven Bilic's side. The east London outfit are planning a series of high-profile deals to herald their new era at the Olympic Stadium in the summer.
Marseille have until recently been stubborn to sell their prized asset but both Spurs have West Ham are believed to have expressed their desire to break the bank to secure his services at the end of the current campaign.
Batshuayi, who signed a new deal at Marseille running until 2020, has also attracted the interest of Stoke City who were rumoured to have made a £21m offer in the final days of the recent winter transfer window.
Meanwhile, former Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt believes Pochettino will reject any advances from Manchester United and Chelsea.
"I am convinced he would turn down any advances from Manchester United or Chelsea," said Mabbutt, speaking in advance of the London Football Awards.
"I'm sure he sees this squad of players and what is happening at Tottenham on and off the field and realises these are very exciting times for the club.
"Those people saying he might get tempted away, I would say to them when was the last time Totttenham had a very good chance of winning the title?
"Probably 50 years ago. We came third in the league during my time but this side now has that ability to do it, not just this year, but for years to come."

West Ham loanee reveals he turned down several other clubs for chance to work with Slaven Bilic - TurkishFootball.com

West Ham loanee reveals he turned down several other clubs for chance to work with Slaven Bilic
On-loan West Ham striker Emmanuel Emenike has revealed that he turned down several offers from clubs in Europe and Asia for the chance to play under the stewardship of Slaven Bilic.
"It is a new league with new challenges. As a striker, I am ready to build up my confidence and face the challenges and the technical ability of the league. There is no doubt that this is the best league in the world. West Ham was not in the picture at first. I had several offers from Asia and some European clubs that I was considering before the West Ham offer came. This is coupled with the fact that they have a coach who I admire, Slaven Bilic," Emenike told the Nation.
Emenike recently turned down a move to Shanghai Shenhua according to the Mirror. The Chinese club tabled an offer of €5.5 million which Emenike rejected in favour of a loan move to West Ham.
The daily paper goes onto say that Shenhua have maintained an interest in the 28-year-old and will return in the summer.
The Nigerian international also revealed that Bilic had been keen on him for a while and that he is really looking forward to working alongside the Hammers boss.
"He had always wanted me to play for him. However, sincerely, I do not know what he sees but I am relying on God to lead me and let me justify the confidence. I know it will be easy for me to work with him because we have been in two countries together and he must have seen something in me," he added.
Bilic knew Emenike was his time coaching in Russia and Turkey but the powerful striker had always played for rival sides to the Croatian manager up until January.
Emenike played for Spartak Moscow when Bilic coached Lokomotiv and for Fenerbahce when the former Croatian national team manager was in charge of Besiktas.

Phil Brown confirms Southend United's interest in West Ham United defender Stephen Hendrie - Southend Echo

Southend United boss Phil Brown has confirmed to the Southend Echo that he wants to extend Stephen Hendrie's loan spell at Roots Hall.
Hendrie signed for the Shrimpers on an initial month's loan back in January, which is set to expire this week.
At the moment no deal to extend the temporary move has been agreed, but Brown is hoping to seal an extension to the switch in the coming weeks.
"It's an ongoing conversation with West Ham," said Brown.
"We can only take it to 93 days on an emergency loan but if there's a gap in between him coming back to us then there's still a chance of getting him until the end of the season."
Hendrie has played an important part for Southend since he made the switch from Upton Park.
The 21-year-old has played in Southend's last five league matches, and he scored his first goal in English football against Shrewsbury at the start of February.
Hendrie is yet to make his debut for West Ham, but his performances in League One have been encouraging so far.
Hendrie is part of a host of Hammers youngsters who are currently on loan in the Football League.
West Ham also have Reece Burke on loan at Bradford City, while Martin Samuelsen is on a temporary move with Peterborough United.

Retro Hammer: Joe Cole
February 17, 2016
TheWestHamWay.co.uk
Joe Difford

Joe Cole is the man who loved West Ham so much he played for them twice. The England international and three-time Premier League winner will be gracing the Boleyn Ground with his presence one final time for Mark Noble's testimonial in March. But what has the academy graduate done when not in claret and blue?

Most people aren't aware, but Joe Cole was brought up by his adopted parents in London, before turning his attention to football and becoming a schoolboy with West Ham United. Once touted as England's most exciting youngster, Cole was a £10 million target at just 16 years of age, making his first team debut at the ripe age of 17.

In five years, the midfielder made 150 appearances for the Hammers, before being snapped up by the ambitious Chelsea. It was in blue that Cole picked up the most silverware, winning three Premier League titles and picking up a number of personal awards, such as a place in the PFA team of the season in 2005-06 and Chelsea's Player of the Year in 2008.

As has been the case with many former Hammers, Cole struggled with injury at times during his career, and has suffered cruciate ligament damage that resulted in surgery, along with a stress fracture to his foot. Despite these setbacks, he made 281 appearances in blue, netting 40 goals, impressive for a midfielder.

His goal tally for England is even more remarkable, and Cole has scored almost a goal every five games for the Three Lions, including one of the best goals our country has seen in the past decade; an unbelievable volley against Sweden.

After being compared to Lionel Messi by Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, Joe went and got himself sent off just 45 minutes into his debut for the Reds in 2010, missing a penalty in their next game in the Europa League. His whole spell on Merseyside is best forgotten, but a loan spell in France did rejuvenate his career somewhat, prompting Sam Allardyce to bring him home after his contract expired with Liverpool.

Back where he belongs, fans were overjoyed to see their not-so-young-anymore star back in claret and blue, where he grabbed both assists on his second debut against Manchester United.
Joe's goal against Spurs captured his passion for the club as he turned well to finish, before ripping off his shirt and running over to the adoring fans, an image that will remain in the minds of Hammers for years to come.

After 16 appearances for Aston Villa, Cole signed for Coventry where you are probably aware he earns his money today, and hopefully this means he is fit and ready to impress come Easter Monday.

Pele once said that Cole, "has the skills of a Brazilian", but sadly injuries hampered what could have been an even more spectacular career. Regardless of whether or not he lived up to expectations, Joe Cole will always be remembered as a true legend at West Ham, and this author will continue to wear his 'Cole 26' shirt to games for as a long as he lives.

Tomkins out until April

Injured defender James Tomkins is unlikely to feature for West Ham again until April according to the club's Head of Medical & Sports Science, Stijn Vandenbroucke. Tomkins, who limped off midway through the second half of West Ham's recent 1-0 defeat at Southampton with a calf strain is likely to miss all but two of United's remaining fixtures this season, according to Vandenbroucke. "James Tomkins is progressing well with his treatment after suffering a calf injury at Southampton," he said, speaking via the club's website in his weekly update. "He will be sidelined for five to six weeks."

The central defender, who had been filling in at right back following Cark Jenkinson's return to Arsenal - also prompted by injury - will miss the forthcoming Premier League matches against Sunderland (h), Tottenham (h), Everton (a), Watford (h) and Chelsea (a).

Tomkins will also miss the FA Cup clash with Blackburn this weekend, a potential FA Cup quarter final on the weekend of 12/13 March and almost certainly Mark Noble's testimonial on 28 March. He should however be available for two consecutive London derbies against Crystal Palace (2 April) and Arsenal (9 April). Tomkins' injury means that Slaven Bilic is without a recognised right back for this weekend's FA Cup tie at Blackburn, with Sam Byram also unavailable having featured for former club Leeds during an earlier round of the competition.

* In other injury news, Vandenbroucke has confirmed that fellow defender Winston Reid will return to training with the first team squad from next Monday.

Lanzini returns but Carroll injured - again

Manuel Lanzini is set to return to Slaven Bilic's first team squad for this weekend's trip to Blackburn.

The Argentine midfielder has been sidelined since the beginning of January with a recurrence of the thigh injury that kept him out of action earlier in the campaign.

However West Ham's Head of Medical and Sports Science Stijn Vandenbroucke confirmed this morning that Lanzini is set to be involved with the 18-man squad that will fly to Lancashire this weekend.

"Manuel joined the team on the training pitch on Sunday after recovering from the thigh problem he suffered in the Barclays Premier League win over Liverpool on 2 January," he said.

"He will train for the full week and will be available to play a part in Sunday's Emirates FA Cup tie at Blackburn Rovers."

However Vandenbroucke also confirmed that Bilic will have to make do without two of his three available strikers, with the news than Enner Valencia and Andy Carroll will both miss out.

"Two players suffered injuries in the 2-2 draw at Norwich City on Saturday and will not be available for Sunday's trip to Ewood Park," he confirmed. "Enner Valencia suffered a right ankle injury in a tackle during the second half and came off, while Andy Carroll injured his adductor."

Carroll has managed just 18 appearances thus far this season, having begun the campaign in the treatment room whilst suffering a couple of minor injuries since. Ecuador international Valencia has also endured a stop-start campaign, making just 16 appearances.

The fresh injuries to Carroll and Valencia - combined with the news that fellow striker Diafra Sakho will not begin training with the first team until next week - means that Bilic has only Emmanuel Emenike to call upon as a first-choice forward for this weekend's FA Cup tie.

Andy Carroll has suffered a fresh injury blow and will miss West Ham's FA Cup fifth-round tie away to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday. Carroll, who has only recently returned from a hamstring problem, sustained an injury to his adductor in the 2-2 draw with Norwich City last Saturday and will not travel with the rest of the first-team squad to Ewood Park. The Hammers forward has been blighted by injuries since making the move to the Boleyn Ground in 2012 and spent seven months on the sidelines last year after undergoing major knee ligament surgery. Enner Valencia will also miss the trip to Blackburn after suffering an ankle injury at Carrow Road, but midfielder Manuel Lanzini is expected to return following six weeks out with a thigh problem picked up in the 2-0 victory over Liverpool on January 2.

Former Hammers manager Harry Redknapp is sad that West Ham will no longer be playing at the Boleyn Ground next season but says the new stadium will take them to another level. He says it would be fitting to way to celebrate the last season at Upton Park by winning the FA Cup this year. "It's the last year at Upton Park and it would be great to go out on a high and celebrate by winning the FA Cup" Harry Redknapp told Talksport radio. "They're a very good side and I like the look of them, they've been excellent. It's amazing that they're no longer going to be at the old Boleyn, all my memories of my life from when I was about 14 or 15 go back there." "There's nowhere like it, it's a great atmosphere there. Those midweek games at Upton Park when all the fans are singing 'Bubbles', it really takes some beating." "It's a great place and a tough place to play too, the fans could give you some stick back in the day!
"The new stadium is going to be great for them, it's going to take West Ham to another level, but I'd like to see them go out with a cup win under their belt."

You really do have to hand it to our fans. Once again they have shown themselves to be the most devoted in the land as FA Cup weekend approaches and our tie at Blackburn Rovers.
This is a game being shown live on the box yet every one of the 7,200 tickets for the Fifth Round game has been sold – a totally remarkable achievement. And David Gold has declared his total amazement at the dedication of the faithful as they prepare to make the trek north. He said: "With all due respect to Rovers, this is not a trip to Barcelona yet here we are selling every single ticket available to us. "Every club in the land says they have the best supporters but we have. We really have. They have astonished me over and over again – they followed us everywhere through the Championship and are the most devoted in the land. "To be taking 7,200 of them to Rovers is brilliant and the truth is we could probably have sold more. What a fantastic bunch of people they are."

The high energy Hammers grabbed a couple there last season when with Nottingham Forect and admits he's looking forward to his return this Sunday.
He said: "Last time I played at Ewood Park I scored two goals so it'll be nice going back there. One was a header; one was a volley from 25 yards out so, hopefully, I can do that again!"
Speaking to www.whufc.com he said: "Blackburn are a side where they are going to throw everything at us. They'll think 'Ah, they're a Premier League team, we've got nothing to lose here, and the pressure is off us.' "So the pressure will be on us, especially with the form we are in right now. He added: "For the rest of the season, I just want to keep performing well, try and stay in the team and I'll probably set more goals for myself next season." This lad can become the next Payet

David Gold believes the Irons are fixed up for years to come in the creativity area of the team. Dimi Payet maybe the current hero but the co chairman reckons the rise of Martin Samuelsen is set to give the club bags on invention and subtelty for years to come. And with Manu Lanzini also signing for the club – probably on a four year deal within the next few weeks – Gold is justifiably excited for the future. Speaking exclusively to ClaretandHugh he said: "Martin looks a very Dimitri-Payet-605211serious prospect indeed and I said when I first saw him that he was going to become a real player. I think I may even have claimed he could become a Trevor Brooking. Dimitri has several years left in him of course but Martin is just a teenager and has it all before him – he certainly has the skill level to become the new Dimi doesn't he. And with Manu also on a long contract these are exciting days for us. "The future looks very bright indeed."

Antonio to answer SOS

Michail Antonio looks certain to take up emergency right back services at Blackburn in Sunday's fifth round FA Cup tie. With James Tomkins sidelined for another three weeks, Sam Byram Cup tied and Joey O'Brien again injured, the problems on the right side of the back four continue as they have done for weeks. And a source told ClaretandHugh today: "There doesn't seem to be any other solution and it will be a surprise if Michail doesn't slot into the job. There was a suggestion that in the absence of Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia he could start up top but that's unlikely. He looks certain to be needed at the back."
That, however, will allow Victor Moses to take hi place on the right side of midfield and between them the pair could seriously threaten some pacey action on the Rovers defence. Emanuelle Emenike – despite a reported knock – is expected to be the only central attacking option available and looks likely to play with Dimi Payet tucked in behind him.

Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Lambert has called on his supporters to get behind their team and buy a ticket for the Sunday match with West Ham.

The biggest crowd Lambert has experienced in his three months in charge of the Rovers came in his first home game in charge when 15,837 fans watched the 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Only 16,000 tickets have been sold so far and that includes West Ham's sold-out 7,200 allocation so the home side have only sold around 8,800.

Lambert, speaking after his side's 3-0 win at home to Fulham on Tuesday, said: "I look forward to Sunday and seeing how busy the stadium will be. It will be a great atmosphere and our fans will get behind us. We need the supporters and we need to get more in the stadium to give us that extra hand. Hopefully if we do play like that (against Fulham), and do go on little winning runs, then more come and watch us."

Rovers are averaging attendances of 13,752 in the league this season. The capacity of Ewood park is 31,367.

Borussia Monchengladbach's Norway international midfielder or defender is set to be available on a summer Bosman PLUS: Claudio Yacob wanted in La Liga
The Mirror

West Brom have joined the summer scrap to sign Norway midfielder Havard Nordtveit. Nordtveit, 25, a former Arsenal trainee, will become a free agent at the end of the season after stalling on a new deal with Borussia Monchengladbach. The Germans hope to keep versatile Nordtveit, who can play defensive midfield or across the back four, but Albion have joined West Ham and Southampton in keeping tabs on him. He has also been linked with Liverpool. The Baggies' Argentinian midfielder Claudio Yacob is a £3.5million summer target for Europa League champions Sevilla. Yacob, 28, is under contract at The Hawthorns until the end of next season. He has been targeted by Sevilla as a replacement for Ever Banega, who is set to join Inter Milan this summer. Albion signed Yacob from the Argentinian side Racing Club in 2012.

Carroll, 27, has only recently come back from hamstring problem that has dogged his season. He is understood to have suffered an adductor injury in West Ham's 2-2 draw with Norwich last weekend. And Gold tweeted that the England striker needs rest to recover from the problem. "Andy has a slight injury and will be rested for the game against Blackburn. Lanzini should be available," Gold wrote. West Ham head into their trip with Blackburn knowing victory would see them into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 2011. Carroll has scored just three goals all season for Slaven Bilic's side, while Argentine Lanzini oboists four goals from 14 appearances in the league. Bilic faces a striker shortage for the trip to Ewood Park after Enner Valencia was also injured with an ankle knock against Norwich. Diafra Sakho is still sidelined due to a thigh injury.

SPOTLIGHT ON AARON CRESSWELL
By Blind Hammer 18 Feb 2016 at 08:00 72 comments
WTID
Blind Hammer provides an analysis of Aaron Cresswell's development this season.

One of the factors which underlaid our early season inconsistency was the apparent struggle our full backs experienced adapting to Bilic's new pattern of play. Our woeful home performance against Bournemouth is remembered for Jenkinson's implosion but it was also, statistically, Aaron Cresswell's worst game. The new West Ham style is undeniably more demanding on full backs than previous systems deployed by Allardyce. He utilised long balls which elevated play up the pitch. If possession was won then play could progress from there and both Jenkinson and Cresswell did well arriving to deliver crosses aimed at Sakho or Carroll. Their role was simpler, and they had far less responsibility for constructing and progressing play from box to box. In addition they both benefited from players like Jarvis covering and tackling back to increase defensive solidity.

In Bilic's new West Ham team progression through possession increases pressure on technique for both midfield and wide players. However the payoff for teams who are successful in this style is more game control and more capacity to exert pressure. Compare West Ham's famously poor performance against Hull city in 2014, as opposed to our performance against Aston Villa this season. In both games we face relegation sides that were reduced to 10 men. In 2014 we allowed the 10 men of Hull to dominate possession and narrowly won by benefiting from an own goal and a dubious penalty after the referee did not spot Diame's handball. In contrast against Villa West Ham controlled the game and ran out eventual easy winners with deserved high quality goals.

There are few now who would dispute that West Ham's football is of a different order to that played in recent seasons but Jenkinson found it impossible to adapt. He never recovered from the Bournemouth game and his paper thin confidence was finally shredded in our drubbing at White Hart Lane.

Cresswell, by contrast, has proved that he is made of sterner stuff. He has continued to be an automatic choice at left back and there has never been a suggestion that Tomkins or Obonna have to deputise there.

So how can we measure Cresswell's performance and can we identify areas for improvement? I decided to compare stats for Cresswell against a proven defensive star the West Ham team, Winston Reid. There is no doubt that when fit Reid has been one of our highest quality defenders. I have also decided to make a direct comparison with Tottenham's left back, Danny Rose.

The most obvious weakness and area for targeted improvement appear to be in Cresswell's tackling. Aaron Cresswell has won the surprisingly small number of only 17 tackles this season. The reality is that he is more likely to lose a tackle than win it. His success rate is only 40%. This, on the face of it is a surprising weakness for a defender.

By contrast, Winston Reid, playing fewer games than Cresswell, has won 27 tackles with a success rate of 59%. In other words Reid will win the majority of tackles, whereas Cresswell will win only a minority. Even Tottenham's Danny Rose has achieved a superior tackling rate winning 33 tackles with a success rate of 52%. .

This pattern is to an extent also there when we look at aerial duels. Cresswell has won 49% of his duels compared to Reid's success rate of 63%. Rose also outperforms Cresswell, though to be fair there is not much in it; Rose at 52% only just wins the majority of his aerial duels.

Cresswell's record in other defensive areas is more encouraging. He has made 51 interceptions, completed 77 clearances and made 12 blocks. Reid in comparison has made 45 interceptions, 108 clearances and 19 blocks. Reassuringly for us Rose is markedly inferior to Cresswell, achieving only 18 interceptions, a figure dwarfed by Cresswell's 51. Rose has also only made 59 clearances and a miserly five blocks.

Whilst the comparison between Cresswell and Rose is direct and relevant, is it fair to compare Cresswell with Reid? Well arguably it is because of the relative team context. A full back playing for Barcelona can expect far less pressure on his position than a full back playing for Aston Villa. By contrast Reid and Cresswell have to share in the same defensive pressures and achieve performance levels in a similar context.

Despite this the fact is that Reid's game responsibilities are far more one dimensional than Cresswell's and the overall pressure and responsibility on the full back position compared to a central defender becomes stark when we look at other stats.

The most obvious difficulty is that the full back is expected to perform at both ends of the pitch. Cresswell has achieved this in creditable style, creating 30 chances for West Ham to score this season. Reid hardly features in this comparison, only creating 2 chances, whilst Rose has only created 11 chances.

Cresswell has also proved that he can score goals from open play, whereas Reid rarely advances except for a set piece. Rose has failed to score this season.

In this attacking context Reid's successful pass rate of 83% is actually less impressive than Cresswell's rate of 78%. Cresswell's game is far more likely to endure fierce competing pressure from opposition midfielders and defenders. Whilst Rose has identical pass accuracy to Cresswell of 78% his creativity and attacking impact is far less effective.

Cresswell's Shot Accuracy of 42% is certainly higher than Reid's 38%, despite the tendency that Cresswell will be hitting his shots from a more difficult wide angle. In comparison Rose's accuracy is woeful, worse even than Reid at only 25%.

So where does this leave Cresswell and West Ham? Well despite the presence of Julian Dicks on the coaching team it seems that Cresswell has to do far more work on his tackling. However, when we compare his other qualities it is clear that he is a far superior player to Rose even in a defensive context as he is far more likely to disrupt opposition attack by intercepting the ball. This seems to indicate both superior positional sense and mobility compared to Rose. (Are you looking at these stats Hodgson?)

Despite his tackling deficiency Cresswell has adapted well to the new West Ham style and is a crucial box to box outlet for the team. I would want him more in our team than Rose any day. If he can only nudge his tackling percentage up so that it can at least match Rose the vastly superior nature of other aspects of his game will probably make international recognition impossible even for Hodgson to deny.

West Ham will be without attacking duo Enner Valencia and Andy Carroll for Sunday's FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers. Valencia injured his ankle and Carroll his abductor muscle during Saturday's 2-2 Premier League draw with Norwich City. With Diafra Sakho unlikely to return to full training until Monday as he recovers from a thigh strain and Nikica Jelavic having left for the Chinese Super League, manager Slaven Bilic could turn to new signing Emmanuel Emenike to lead the attack. However, West Ham have had a small boost this week with the news attacker Manuel Lanzini is back in first-team training for the first time since the start of January. West Ham will also be hoping Sakho, who has targeted 20 Premier League goals this season, will return to action in the coming weeks. He told the club's official website: 'Honestly, my recovery's going very well. Even though it's been a lot quicker than what I'd thought, I'm in a hurry to come back because I promised to score 20 goals. 'At the moment I'm only on five in all competitions. So that leaves 15. I'm going to try right until the end to keep to my word.
'Even if the fans say, 'the whole season he only played 20 or so games', I hope, in the games that I'm going to play, to respect my words. That's very important to me.'

From the Treatment Room
WHUFC.com

Antonio looking forward to Ewood return
WHUFc.com

From the Newsroom - Gary Jacob
WHUFC.com

The Times' football writer Gary Jacob casts his eye over everything West Ham United

They are putting the final touches to the refurbished Olympic Stadium and Dimitri Payet will be one of the star attractions when he runs out for West Ham United next season. He signed a bumper contract last week, which should prevent months of rumours linking him with bigger clubs, when the strong likelihood has always been he is going nowhere this summer. He turns 29 next month and that has always been a safeguard in West Ham's favour.

West Ham's stadium move, likely finishing place in the league this season and new television deal probably means they will have plenty of funds and could break their transfer record set when they signed Andy Carroll.

They have heavily watched Michy Batshuayi, as have Tottenham Hotspur, Stoke City, Newcastle United and clubs in Italy. West Ham and Stoke wanted to agree the transfer deal last month and allow him to stay at Marseilles for the rest of season. The French club said no and believe his price can only go up especially if he is shines at Euro 2016. They want a summer auction and the Belgium striker is likely to go for big money, perhaps as much as £30million. He has 12 strikes and four assists this season, a third of the goals for Marseilles, and second top scorer in France behind Zlatan Ibrahimović.

In West Ham's favour is that they have a good relationship with Marseilles. They believe they can offer him a regular first-team place, not competing with the likes of Harry Kane. It would be a major statement of intent.

West Ham's recruitment team focus heavily on a player statistics. That was what drew them to look at Payet, because of his assists, and stoked interest in Wilfried Bony. That is what might draw them to look at Vincent Janssen who has 14 goals for AZ Alkmaar in his first season and a good credit for Holland youth sides.

Payet has contributed towards 12 league goals; five of them assists so far. After a slow start he helped to turn around the game against Norwich City on Saturday, just as he did against Bournemouth last month, keeping West Ham in contention for a European place. The only surprise is that he could not find the consistency or discipline earlier in his career.

It is not usual for West Ham to increase a player's pay so quickly after his arrival. Payet's pay rise is a reward, marks his influence and should prevent the ship being unsettled. He has been so heavily praised by his manager and club that he and his agent have been justified to ask, 'why aren't you paying me what is deserved?' Nearly 80 per cent of fans polled voted in favour of his improved deal, according to a poll on the excellent Claret and Hugh fans' website.

No player has brought so much excitement and expectation since Carlos Tevez rescued the team for near certain relegation nearly a decade ago. Supporters appreciate the players for being hard working and determined on the pitch, regardless of their tricks and skills.

Suddenly, his £10.5million transfer fee seems cheap. Manuel Lanzini has been the other attacking inspiration and Bilic had tracked him from the time he was handed the No10 shirt at River Plate at the age of just 20.

Payet has never before experienced the kind of affection he has received at Upton Park and a song on his honour. "It was posted a lot on my Twitter feed," Payet has said. "It is the first time I have a song with my name – it never happens in France. It really touched me."

"Do well and let others speak" is the motto of Saint-Philippe, situated south-west of Reunion where he grew up. It sticks to his skin. For so long they talked about Payet not quite fulfilling his potential, when he was shifted across the attacking line, until he found his place as a striker or winger at Lille. Even at Marseilles, he was slightly suffocated until Mathieu Valbuena left for Russia. At Upton Park, he has found a home.

Joint-Chairman - We have amazing support
WHUFC.com

DO NOT RUSH BACK LANZINI AND SUCCESS BRINGS ITS OWN UNIQUE PRESSURES!
By S J Chandos 17 Feb 2016 at 08:00
WTID

There are optimistic reports circulating that Lanzini may return from injury against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup. I personally hope that he is fit enough to play some role from the bench, but the club should avoid the mistake of rushing him back in to action too soon. One gets the impression that last time he returned from injury, he was pre-maturely put back in to the side in an attempt to compensate for the absence of Payet. The club should learn from that episode and ease Lanzini back in to action this time. Fortunately on this occasion, Payet is back in the side and playing well, so there is not the same imperative. While everyone wants to see the Payet-Lanzini combo reunited in the Hammers midfield, the fact is that a bit of extra time and patience will probably ensure that happens without a recurrence of Lanzini's injury problem.

What Payet and then Lanzini's injury absences do underline is the need for an extra play-maker to cover and compete with them for a first team spot. The question is whether we need to bring someone else in this summer or if Samuelson and/or Cullen are ready to step up in the short-term? Having followed their respective performances on loan to Peterborough and Bradford City I suspect that they could very well be ready next season. Peterborough may well want to keep Samuelson for a further season and I can see that there is an argument that the Norweign youngster could benefit from a further loan period. However, if we do go down that road, we need to ensure that Samuelson is signed to a new long-term contract to keep Arsenal and the other such vultures at bay. As for Cullen, he looks a class act every time he plays and if he continues to develop can become a very good professional for the club.

We probably are well stocked with outstanding young midfield prospects, but if we were to go down the 'Cresswell-Antonio-Byram' road again then there are some good prospects still to be had in the Championship. One of the very best of these is Will Hughes of Derby County. Although he has been out with a knee injury, Hughes is very highly rated and will be snapped up by a big club at some point. He could be an option for the Hammers if they decide they need another under-study to Lanzini-Payet.

I must commend the club in the swift action that they have taken to renew players contracts to discourage interest from other clubs. Various parties were said to be sniffing around Payet, whilst there has also allegedly been interest in Cresswell and Oxford. With regard to the latter, Arsenal are supposed to be preparing a £8m or £10m bid, depending on which newspaper/media source you read. Again, the club have moved decisively recently to sign the likes of Burke, Oxford and Borg to new contracts, thus frustrating the plans of would be suitors. The club cannot be faulted in this respect and they deserve much credit for defending the club's long-term interests.

However, the fact remains that we will always suffer an element of vulnerability, to losing players to rivals, until we get to the point where we regularly qualify for European competition. It is that factor that gives the so-called 'top clubs' the extra financial muscle and makes them attractive to potential to new recruits. Put simply, we need to become one of those clubs and we are probably in a race to get there as soon as possible. There is to much complacent talk about long-term projects and moving forward incrementally. The problem is that we may have departed on a journey, but there is no guarantee that we will see the anticipated point of arrival. We have moved swiftly this season to compete for a top six position and we need to prepare for a big final push, up until May, to ensure that we finish as high as possible. Next season is about strengthening further, hopefully bringing some youngsters through and mounting a serious challenge for a coveted top four spot. We will be in the Olympic Stadium and we need to secure the Champions League football that the venue (not to mention our long suffering fans) deserve.

The club hierarchy can do all it wants to dampen expectations, but we all know that CL qualification is the pressing target, and the sooner it is achieved the better. We fans have suffered decades of disappointment and dampened expectations, now, personally, I want to see the club's potential finally realised with a minimum of further delay. It can be done, but I am convinced that it will require a third phase of major investment in the squad, which will see at least three class players added. This will inject the additional class in the squad and ensure that we have the capacity to cope with the likely extra demands of next season. We need a squad that can maintain a top four push, sustain a European challenge and compete in two domestic cup competitions. It is very demanding, but that is what divides the top clubs from the rest. And it is the challenge that West Ham United need to rise to this summer – not in the 'never, never' of some people's imaginations

To do that we need to achieve a genuine marriage of quality and quantity in next season's squad. We have to be able to rotate the squad to regularly cope with two matches a week and, if we end up qualifying for the Europa League this season, that particularly demanding schedule of Thursday and Sunday/Monday matches. No one said success was easy and sustained success is far harder to achieve. But these are nice pressures, very different from those of being engaged in desperate annual relegation struggles.

I think that we can all agree that challenging for honours and competing in Europe is the place where we all want to be. If so, this summer will be vital in laying the groundwork for achieving that enduring future success.

THREE GAMES TO DETERMINE OUR SEASON?
By Bobby Shovels 17 Feb 2016 at 17:00
WTID

I am not going to go into the Norwich game in depth because, firstly, I'm a bit late, and secondly, I would simply be repeating myself and problems that have plagued us throughout this season: slow starts, inability to take on teams in the bottom half., another game where we have gone 2-0 down to a struggling side (Sunderland being the other). Of course, as with anything in football, you can use the statistics to match your own stance: either the Norwich draw adds to a good tally of two defeats in 13 league games., or the Norwich draw adds to a tally of just four wins in the last 13 league matches. Take your pick. I'm prone to take both: we're hard to beat, but we're finding it hard to win at times too.

Anyway, I really feel the next three games – Blackburn, Sunderland and Tottenham – could go some way in defining our season. Not just in what could lie ahead (an FA Cup quarter final) but in what we can achieve.

With the Sunderland game, there is much to prove. Not just because of what happened in the previous fixture against Sunderland – we played against ten men and still couldn't win – but because we have to show how far we have come since the days of Allardyce (technically, we're only a few points better off than this time last season, but obviously there's more to judge this season on than just a yearly comparison). Yet this fixture is not just about Allardyce; it's also about actually fighting for something. If we want to finish top five or top six, we must do better: Southampton's march up the table has seen them overtake us, and even though Manchester United appear to be sporadically imploding, we still have not capitalised on that. Furthermore, Sunderland come off the back of a hugely important 2-1 win against Van Gaal's men and a two-week break, while we will only have five days between Blackburn and the match. Allardyce will look to use that. We need to go into that game with a mindset separate to the one we seem to always have against relegation battlers: we can win this.

It's crucial for us to have something to fight for: we can't just do what we did last year and say, "We're safe, season over." Mid-table clubs get into that mindset far too easily. We need to crack on and get some wins under our belt.

I was listening to the Danny Dyer interview on the KUMB podcast and I thoroughly recommend you listen too. I haven't heard a West Ham fan make so much sense in a long time, as well as accurately summarise what it's like to be a Hammer. I particularly agreed with him describing the Crystal Palace play-off loss as one of the lowest moments – especially when he talked about the journey back to London from Cardiff. I remember being stuck in traffic on a club coach on the way back and feeling incredibly depressed. Anyway, Dyer spoke about the up and down nature of West Ham, and that's what makes me worried about the Blackburn game. As I've written before, they have a good recent record of Premier League scalps in the competition and we need to have our heads screwed on. Yes, it was fun to chant "We're going to Wembley" after the Liverpool win, but we've only passed through two rounds and there are tougher games ahead. I would love to win the Cup. Let's make sure we make the quarters.

And finally, the first game in March, two weeks from now, is against Spurs. There is not much more in life that I would hate to witness than Tottenham winning the Premier League, a club that likes to shout about how big it is and yet has not won any major silverware for a hell of a long time. I believe it was Sam Wallace who said something similar on the Sky Sports Sunday show. Anyway, we have shown ourselves to have an impressive run of form against the top clubs this season but the Spurs match was the heaviest defeat of the season and that was even with the likes of Lanzini and Sakho playing. There is nothing that will define our season more than coming back against Tottenham and giving them a thumping defeat, not just derailing their title hopes but showing how ruthless we can be as well – and making sure no one does the double on us. It is an opportunity for Bilic to right the wrongs of the 4-1 defeat and to give us a lovely victory against Spurs. Whatever you say or think about Allardyce, at least he gave us a lot of memorable games – and wins – against Tottenham.

Emmanuel Emenike opens up about match-fixing hell which saw him spend four nights in PRISON
11:13, 17 FEB 2016 UPDATED 11:13, 17 FEB 2016
BY LIAM CORLESS
The 28-year-old West Ham striker was wrongly accused of faking an injury to miss a title-deciding match during his time with Turkish side Karabukspor
The Mirror

Emmanuel Emenike has opened up about the match-fixing allegations he faced five years ago which landed him in prison. The striker, who joined West Ham on loan until the end of the season last month, was playing for Turkish side Karabukspor when the unfounded claims surfaced. The 28-year-old missed a key Turkish league game against Fenerbahce in 2011 through injury before joining Fenerbahce two weeks later in a £9million deal. However, authorities alleged he faked an injury to miss the crucial title-decided game, which Fenerbahce won 1-0, in return for a big money move to the Istanbul-based club. Karabukspor and Emenike both vehemently denied the claims and the club's doctor provided a letter to confirm the striker's injury was genuine. However, he was locked up for four nights despite the doctor's letter before being released due to a lack of evidence. "My time in prison was a crazy nightmare that I couldn't wake up from," Emenike told The Sun. "I've never committed a crime in my life but I was treated like a criminal, living on bread and water. "It was not a good experience. It gave me a different perspective on life. When I was finally cleared I thanked God for letting justice

Tottenham and West Ham set for £25m transfer fight over Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi
22:30, 16 FEB 2016
BY DARREN LEWIS
Title-chasing Spurs are confident — but the Hammers think his former team-mate Dimitri Payet's success with them will win the Belgian over
The Mirror

Tottenham are locked in a tug of war with London neighbours and rivals West Ham over £25million-rated striker Michy Batshuayi. The title-chasing north Londoners are confident of luring the Belgian, who they have been tracking for over a year, to White Hart Lane. Spurs believe their chances will increase even further if they win the league or secure Champions League football. But West Ham reckon the success of Dimitri Payet - a former team-mate of Batshuayi's at Marseille - will tempt the marksman to join them instead. The Irons have received enough encouragement to believe that the player could make their attack even stronger when they take up residence at the Olympic Stadium next season. Payet has been sensational at Upton Park since signing for the Irons last summer for just £10.75million. His performances have earned him rave reviews and a new £125,000-a-week deal. Batshuayi, 22, has scored 15 goals this season. Mirror Sport first revealed Tottenham's interest in him last July. But Marseille blocked his sale and the player resolved to focus on trying to force his way into the Belgium squad for this summer's European Championship. That did not stop Stoke joining the chase for his services, however, with a £21m offer on the final weekend of the January transfer window. Newcastle are also interested but the player is understood to be keen on a move to London, leaving Spurs and West Ham as favourites.

* WEST HAM striker Diafra Sakho is desperate to return from his thigh injury in time to deliveron his promise to score 20 goals this season.
The Senegal frontman has been out since November, and has netted just five times so far. He is expected back later this month and said: "I'm going to try right until the end to keep to my word. My recovery's going very well. "Even though it's been a lot quicker than what I'd thought, I'm in a hurry to come back because I promised to score 20 goals. "At the moment I'm only on five in all competitions. So that leaves 15."

Hammers linked with Terry & Robben

The Brentwood Gazette are back at making up headlines again and both the Metro along with the Daily Express seem happy to fall for their articles and repeat them without questioning their authenticity. The Metro and Daily Express claim "West Ham are lining up a shock move to sign Chelsea captain John Terry this summer, according to reports" Not to outdone by the Brentwood Gazette, another football blog called the SportsBlog has today linked the Hammers with Arjeb Robben. The blog says "According to reports in Germany, FC Bayern Munich is going to sell 32 years old Dutch winger for a solid price. Arjen Robben, who is injured often has offer from London, West Ham United are ready to pay 16 million pounds for him.It seems FC Bayern will accept West Ham United's offer, because Arjen is 32 years old and He is injured very often." Please don't expect either aging player at the Olympic Stadium any time soon 😉 Nice try guys but no sale!

West Ham transfer target moves to China

Former West Ham transfer, Burak Yilmaz linked with the Hammers in the January transfer window has become the latest footballer to move to China.
The experienced Galatasaray striker officially completed his move to Beijing Guoan today, following a four-year stay with the Turkish team.
Galatasaray previously claimed that West Ham offered €5m (£3.8m) for the player, only to be turned down when it emerged that he did not want to leave. Slaven Bilic, meanwhile, made it perfectly clear that he was only willing to commit to a loan deal for Yilmaz. Bilic told reporters "With Burak, it's a different situation because they are looking to sell him. If they are going to let him go, they are looking to sell. And as I said, we are not buying now." The Shanghai Daily says the deal is believed to be worth in the region of €8m. The 31-year-old is thought to have signed a three-year contract at the Workers' Stadium.

Irons hope Samulsen is ready next season

West Ham are hoping the Martin Samuelsen will be ready to become a key member of the first team squad next season. Although the teenager has years in front of him his progress at Peterborough has excited the club ho believe he could well be ready to stake his claim next season. Although the club won't make any firm decisions until the summer Samuelsen is seen as a massive part of the club's future and they are ready to let him loose as soon as possible. The Norwegian youngster was very exciting in the recent FA Cup replay between Posh and West Brom which was seen on national TV and the club will be offering him a new deal in the summer. And ClaretandHugh was told: "We look at everything at the end of the season. We'd hope he could play for us next season or at worst just have a few months in the Championship as part of his development." Posh director of Football Barry Fry admits he has had several talks with David Sullivan about keeping the player but has had no positive feedback at this stage.

Collison: Nobes England call-up is no brainer
Posted by Sean Whetstone on February 17, 2016 in News, Whispers
C and H

Former Hammer Jack Collison has said that Mark Noble's call up for England should be a no brainer and says if he isn't called up there is definitely something going on.

Speaking to MooreThanJustaPodcast as part of the Claret And Hugh interview series, Jack told the West Ham podcast:

"Nobes has been fantastic, he has probably played under seven or eight managers now and he has always been a regular and even more so this season. After his goal (at the weekend) it just shows that with a little push over the line he might get an England call before too long, you never know!"

"It's a no brainer, especially with the type and brand of football West Ham are playing at the moment. I think he would slot in there very easily considering that midfield is a very competitive place to try to get in with the likes of Dele Alli and Ross Barkley. I think Nobes has shown he can hold his own at any level with the amount of games he has played and the way he is driving West Ham forward at the moment and if he doesn't get a call up there is definitely something going on there!"

Cottee applauds board's huge statement of intent

Tony Cottee is thrilled with the Dimitri Payet deal declaring "it's a huge statement of intent by the board." And the former striker said: " There a lot of football supporters that complain about the huge wages that players get these days, but I can't imagine any West Ham fan moaning about the salary of Dimitri Payet." Cottee added: Full credit to them (the board) by securing the talents of our best player for the next five years."
Talking to London24.com he added "Everything is changing with the Hammers. As they move into a new stadium they are moving to a different level and that means keeping your best players. Over the last 50 or 60 years, West Ham have been a selling club, but this is now changing. Everyone has their price and I expect there may be a huge buy-out clause in his new contract, but with a five-year deal and that means any team will have to pay an absolute fortune to get him."

Noble breaks West Ham testimonial record

C and H

Mark Noble is on target to break a new West Ham record for the largest ever attendance of a Hammers testimonial match. We understand that very few tickets remain for the match in honour of Nobes on the 28th March and the game looks set to sell out completely.

Our source close to the ticket office told us: "There are a few single scattered seats left for Mark Noble these should be showing online at present if they remain, its been incredibly popular and until bond seats get released two weeks prior its unlikely that there is much left"

NobleSelfie (1)When Irons legend Bobby Moore received his testimonial on 16th November 1970 before terracing was abolished all he could muster was a crowd of 24,448.

The record is currently held by West Ham world cup hero Geoff Hurst who had an attendance of 29,250 23rd on November 1971.

Billy Bonds managed an attendance of 21,081 in December 1978 for his first testimonial while Julian Dicks pulled in a crowd of 14,224 in August,2000. Trevor Brooking's Testimonial in October 1977 was third most attended game with 23,220 attending.

In recent times Tony Carr's testimonial attracted a crowd of 13,000 in May 2010.

Noble is set to smash this record with over 35,000 fans attending his testimonial on Easter Monday.

Slav weighs AC/Lanzini options

Andy Carroll could be recalled to lead the line against Blackburn Rovers in Sunday's FA Cup Tie as the boss weighs his options for the weekend.

Co chairman David Gold tweeted earlier today that the player was available for the game declaring:" Andy is fit and I expect him to play against Blackburn."

The Irons are in increasingly good shape and Manu Lanzini look certain to join the squad this weekend as the club take the competition every more seriously.

We understand that the manager may be ready to rest Enner Valencia who looked particularly weary at Norwich whilst Michail Antonio may also be on the bench with Victor Moses starting.

Lanzini is now with the first team squad and according to insiders looking sharp and ready for action with one saying: "He's certain to be involved at some point ."

We are told that Sakho is about a week to ten days away.

Sakho - I'm working very hard
WHUFC.com

Diafra Sakho is desperate to make his return to first-team action and get back to what he does best - scoring goals! With five to his name, the No15 will have to go some to reach his target of 20 for the season, but the Senegal striker is determined to honour his word to West Ham United supporters. Such is Sakho's eagerness to start hitting the net again that he is putting in extra fitness work at home in a bit to return to action from the thigh injury he suffered in late November. The 26-year-old has been working closely with head of medical and sports science Stijn Vandenbroucke and rehab fitness coach Eamon Swift, with the former suggesting that Sakho could be back in a Claret and Blue shirt by the end of February. "Honestly, my recovery's going very well," Sakho told whufc.com. "Even though it's been a lot quicker than what I'd thought, I'm in a hurry to come back because I promised to score 20 goals and at the moment I'm only on five in all competitions. So that leaves 15. "I'm going to try right until the end to keep to my word. Even if the fans say, 'the whole season he only played 20 or so games', I hope, in the games that I'm going to play, to respect my words. That's very important to me. "I want to play right now. I need to play right now, but Stijn says 'No, no, I have to wait'. I'm working very hard with Stijn and with Eamon, and at home as well."
Sakho has proved a big hit since joining West Ham from French club Metz in August 2014, scoring 17 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions. The Guediawaye-born striker began the current season with two UEFA Europa League goals against FC Lusitans, before adding further goals in the Barclays Premier League victories at Liverpool and Manchester City. However, a pair of thigh injuries have restricted his appearances since October and the popular forward will be hoping to return and contribute to the Hammers' cause over the closing weeks of the 2015/16 campaign.

Hammers reach Enterprise Challenge final
WHUFC.com

Students from Stepney Green Maths, Computing and Science College will be representing West Ham United at the Premier League Enterprise Challenge Final after winning their heat at the Emirates Stadium. The young Hammers beat off competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur to win through to the London final in March and battle it out for the chance to win the coveted award for West Ham for the second time in three years. The innovative project is a business and skills based competition run by the Premier League and Sport Relief, which this year tasked pupils with working on a strategy to help encourage fans to spend more time at stadiums on match days. With 29 school groups representing Premier League and Football League clubs up and down the country, the Hammers will now progress to the final on 9 March, where they will go head-to-head in pitching their idea to a panel of judges from the world of sport and business. The local wannabe entrepreneurs will face stiff competition from five other school groups, representing Swansea City, Everton, Middlesbrough, Manchester United and Norwich City. Since its introduction in 2009, 10,000 young people aged between 13 and 17 have taken part in the programme which uses business models of professional football clubs to deliver enterprise education, with another 1,000 set to take part in this year's competition. The boys from Stepney Green were left stunned as they were announced as winners of the Challenge, having fended off stiff competition from other London based clubs. Foundation team member Rashadul Alam could hardly contain his delight. "I'm ecstatic! We worked for hours and hours on the presentation and that second when our name was read out was the realisation of all of that work. I've learnt so many new skills and I've gained so much confidence from this whole experience. I've been so grateful for the opportunity!"

The Premier League Enterprise challenge has the power to change lives and none more so than for the tournament's former winners from 2014 that, having come through the project with the WHU Foundation, are now mentoring this year's challengers. 2014 Enterprise Challenge winner Sayed Ashrabul said: "We've been through the Enterprise Challenge before and we know how much time and effort goes into it! The boys have done so well to reach the final and they fully deserve it. It's been fantastic to have been able to mentor them having won the tournament with the Foundation back in 2014. "Just like the West Ham United Foundation staff mentored us and helped develop us as people, we can now give back to the younger generation of students and help offer them some guidance."

The same sentiment was echoed by WHU Foundation Enterprise Co-Ordinator Jack Toghli, who had seen a massive personal development in the team. "The boys have done great. They've put a lot of hours in over the months and when I started with them they were nervous and they have come on massively. Their confidence levels have gone through the roof. "Having our 2014 winners here as mentors is such a fantastic example of the Foundation's commitment to creating the leaders of tomorrow, to go out into the community and inspire the next generation. Hopefully this year's participants can go on to mentor the Enterprise Challengers of the future!"

Premier League Executive Chairman, Richard Scudamore, who set this year's task said: "I am sure this year's challenge, our eighth, will produce even better ideas generated by even more enthusiastic and engaged young people. Our successful partnership with Sport Relief, Premier League and Football League clubs, to deliver education with football as the backdrop, continues to bring new and exciting entrepreneurs to the fore. I look forward to seeing the six Play-Off winning groups at the final in March."

Hammers duo set for Romford store signing
WHUFC.com

West Ham United are delighted to announce that Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike will be taking part in a store signing at the Club's official Liberty Romford store on Friday 19 February.
The pair, good friends off the pitch, have added real fire power upfront for the Hammers this season and will be attending the Club's Liberty Romford store between 1.30pm and 3.30pm*, signing merchandise brought in-store on the day and posing for photographs. Moses, on loan from Chelsea, helped fire the Hammers to a famous 2-1 away win at Manchester City with a fine first half strike while also having a hand in other crucial goals – most recently teeing up Dimitri Payet to kick-start the comeback against Norwich City. Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian international Emenike has looked dangerous since joining in January, making notable impacts off the bench against Southampton and the Canaries. This is the perfect chance to meet two of the newest Hammers' heroes, up close and personal so make sure you arrive with plenty of time to avoid disappointment.

*Please note end times are always subject to change and so fans are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

The Big Interview - Mark Noble
WHUFC.com

Jelavic moves to China
WHUFC.com

West Ham United can confirm that Nikica Jelavic has joined China League One club Beijing Renhe on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee.
The Croatia international forward spent five-and-a-half months with the Hammers, scoring two goals in 14 appearances, including an Emirates FA Cup third-round winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers in January. The 30-year-old's move to the Far East ends a six-year spell in English football that also saw him turn out for Everton and Hull City. West Ham United would like to thank Nikica for his hard work during his time at the Boleyn Ground and wish him all the best for his future career.

Nikica Jelavic has joined Chinese second division side Beijing Renhe - only six months after leaving Hull to move to the Boleyn Ground. The 30-year-old former Croatian international, who moved to east London on transfer deadline day last September has finally completed his belated switch to Renhe in a deal worth around £2million - a similar fee to that West Ham paid Hull last year. West Ham's now former #26 scored two goals during his brief spell in east London, against Wolves in the FA Cup and at Newcastle in a 2-1 defeat last month. In all he made 15 appearances for Slaven Bilic's side. Jelavic, who also represented Rangers and Everton during his six-year stay in the UK is just the latest in a series of European-based players to move to China. He will earn in the region of £9million over the course of the next three years. Former Chelsea star Ramires joined Jiangsu Suning for £25m in January, whilst Columbian international Jackson Martínez left La Liga outfit Atlético Madrid to join Guangzhou Evergrande in a £31million switch on 2 February.

Tickets for West Ham? Join the queue, Hodgson
KUMB.com
Filed: Tuesday, 16th February 2016
By: Graeme Howlett

The next time Roy Hodgson asks to visit West Ham, the club should kindly point him towards the ticket office and tell him to join the queue.

After all, what's the point of treating the incumbent England manager as a VIP and paying him lip-service if he has little to no interest whatsoever in selecting any United players for his England squads?

Hodgson has been in charge at Soho Square since 2012 and his predilection for selecting teams from the nation's elite clubs - plus Liverpool and Tottenham - renders him as short-sighted any of his predecessors.

His disinclination to back any Hammers came to a head last Saturday evening when Alan Shearer, of all people, put Hodgson on the spot during Match of the Day when asking why Mark Noble hadn't been offered the opportunity to represent his country.

And the England manager couldn't have made it any clearer that Noble has a cat in hell's chance of ever pulling on a white shirt whilst he remains at the helm. "A lot of people want to ask you, what about him? Is Mark Noble in your thoughts?" asked Shearer following a replay of Noble's equaliser at Carrow Road.

To which Hodgson replied: "It's always good to see Mark Noble - who we've watched for a long time - and Danny Drinkwater, another player we've watched for a long time doing so well and playing so well for their teams.

"We're pretty happy with our midfield, we've got a good group of players we think. But it's always nice that there's a bit of extra competition coming from the outside.

"We can never close the door on anyone who's English because there aren't that many," he added. "It's good to see them playing well and Mark is a very good character - as is Danny Drinkwater, I believe."

As snubs go, it was a fairly comprehensive and unequivocal one. But Hammers fans shouldn't really be surprised for it's been many, many years since players were picked to represent the nation based on form rather than the club shirt they happen to wear.

There are a whole plethora of bizarre selections to support this particularly well-employed theory. The much-discussed Tom Cleverley was a shoo-in for the England squad whilst a member of the Old Trafford mafia - whereas since moving to Aston Villa, he has barely been involved.

Arsenal, who rarely if ever fail to have a player included in the England squad - even when they regularly sent out teams consisting of 11 foreign players - can always count upon the likes of Kieron Gibbs or Callum Chambers being involved.

Returning north again, teenager Luke Shaw appeared in one England squad before he was on the verge of completing a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2014 - since when he had made 12 appearances, more than he's made for the Red Devils' first team this season.

And whilst Noble should have serious cause for complaint given his excellent recent run of form, defender Aaron Cresswell should feel just as put out by Hodgson's inability to look beyond the nation's elite clubs.

Since moving from Ipswich the left-sided defender has been a revelation at the Boleyn Ground, yet is still awaiting his first call up for the national team.

Meanwhile Dele Alli made just two competitive appearances for Tottenham's first XI - a defeat at Manchester United and a draw with Leicester - before getting the nod from the short-sighted Hodgson last August.

Although Liverpudlian Cresswell has little choice, Noble does of course have an alternative with the Republic of Ireland still holding out an olive branch.

Canning Town born and bred, Noble could potentially represent the Irish as a result of his Cork-born grandparents - although to his credit he has thus far refused. After all - if you don't feel it, you don't feel it.

So for as long as the door to our players remains firmly closed, West Ham please stop wasting your time.

And next time Hodgson calls, asking for free tickets and a plush seat in the Directors' Box, politely thank him for his interest and pass on contact details for the ticket office - where the myopic old fart can stand in a line with the rest of us.

Nikica Jelavic: West Ham striker completes move to China
BBC.co.uk

West Ham striker Nikica Jelavic has joined Chinese second division side Beijing Renhe for about £2m. The 30-year-old Croatia international has made one Premier League start this season under compatriot Slaven Bilic. He follows Chelsea's Ramires, who joined Jiangsu Suning for £25m last month, while striker Jackson Martinez joined Guangzhou Evergrande for £31m. The Colombian left Atletico Madrid for the Chinese Super League side, breaking the Asian transfer record. Jelavic signed for West Ham for £3m from Hull in August 2015, but has scored only once in the league despite making 12 appearances from the bench. He previously played for Everton and Rangers.

THE WEST HAM FORWARD WHO SHOULD PLAY AT RIGHT BACK AGAINST BLACKBURN
By Iain Dale 16 Feb 2016 at 17:00
WTID

With Sam Byram cuptied and both James Tomkins and Joey O'Brien injured, Slaven Bilic has a real dilemma about who to play at right back on Sunday in the FA Cup fifth round match at Ewood Park. I'm not familiar enough with the Development Squad to know if any of them might be knocking on the first team door, but I suspect not.

In normal circumstances we might play a central defender at right back. The trouble is, we don't have any spare central defenders. Ogbonna and Collins are our only fit central defenders. Reece Oxford is another possibility, I guess, but I don't think he's ever played at right back.

The solution, I believe, is to play Michail Antonio there. He played for twenty minutes against Liverpool in that position and did brilliantly. He can tackle, he has pace and we know he can cross the ball. Surely it makes sense.

ClaretandHugh understands the club are looking into the possibility of staging an England XI v Germany XI match at the Boleyn Ground before the season ends to commemorate the contribution Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst made in winning the World Cup in 1966 fifty years ago.

A crowd of 93,000 spectators – including the Queen and Prince Phillip – filled London's Wembley Stadium to watch the host nation play West Germany in the final game of the 1966 championships.

Another 400 million people around the world watched the keenly fought match on television.

In the final moments of extra time former Hammer Geoff Hurst powered home his third goal to give England a 4-2 victory and to become the first man ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.

After Germany had taken an early lead, Hurst levelled the score for England by half time with a header from a free kick taken by captain Bobby Moore. The West Ham and England Captain lifted the World Cup.

West Ham has sold all 7,200 tickets for Ewood park this Sunday. Son of the chairman, David Sullivan Junior confirmed the news this evening on twitter by saying "We've sold out 7,200 ticket allocation for Blackburn, 5 days in advance. Bare in mind it's a 4/5 hour trip and on TV. Best fans going ⚒" His brother Jack followed up by adding "Best fans in the world IRONS" But Jack dashed any hopes of taking more than the 7,200 allocation by replying to West Ham fan who asked whether we could ask for more. "We have (asked) but we have a stand so we can't get anymore. I would urge not to buy in the Blackburn end." Blackburn average attendance is around 15,000 but they managed a gate of 28,415 last time they faced a Premier Opposition at Ewood park. In April 2015 they came off 1-0 losers in a sixth round FA Cup replay with Liverpool.

£4 million Jelavic? In our dreams

ClaretandHugh has again been assured this afternoon that reports of Nikicia Jelavic's transfer to China nrtting the club a transfer fee of £4 million are false. Various media outlets have claimed the Hammers sold the Croatian for £4 million but that was rubbished by a highly placed source at Upton Park. Such a fee would have given a 100 per cent profit on the former Hull City striker but the club has made it clear to us that is definitely not the case. We were told: "The club managed to salvage £1.5m of the £2.5m we paid, but it allows us to go again and releases one from the wage bill. "There seems to have been some confusion on the figures – maybe the media has mixed up transfer fees with wages but whatever the reason we certainly won't see £4 million."

ClaretandHugh reported earlier today the figure was believed to be between £1.5m – £2m and our source said: "You have had it correct from the start of the deal."

Emenike has told a Nigerian newspaper that Victor Moses gave him good reasons to join West Ham before he decided to join the Hammers on loan in a move he described God ordained for him.
Emenike told the Nation newspaper in Nigeria about Moses involvement in the loan "We have been talking before moving to West Ham. He was happy when I told him about the transfer and he gave me good reasons why West Ham is the best for me at this time. We joked about our Nations Cup of Africa (AFCON) glory in 2013 and we both agreed it was teamwork that gave us the victory. I hope that I am looking forward to play with him and share that great moment again. I have a wonderful connection with him and know we will get better on the pitch,".

"My transfer to West Ham came at the right time. It is like a blessing. I did not want to leave Al Ain but I think God ordained the move, it happened so fast and coming to the English Premiership is something I have always wanted," Emenike told the Nation newspaper in Nigeria. "This move is not about money but it is difficult to explain to people who think every move is down to money. I have learned from my past, I am a striker and I want to prove that I can still score goals," he added. "I will get well and better in the team, the atmosphere is great, and I am hoping to start on a high note. I am hoping my teammates and the coach will help me to fit in perfectly because I am ready to adapt quickly and keep the confidence alive"

Agent confirms Zaza interest

Simone Zaza was heavily linked with a move to Premier League last month, with both West Ham and Palace reportedly keen on bringing him in on loan until the end of the season. The Hammers instead bought in Emenike on loan.

His agent has broken silence now confirmed that interest, but he insists the 24-year-old never wanted to leave Juventus. "There were expressions of interest from Premier League clubs in January," agent Christian Maifredi told inBlu Radio. "They'll benefit from greater financial resources next season from television rights. There was interest, but nothing more. There was never a real possibility of Zaza moving away from Juventus, that wasn't what he wanted or what the club wanted. Today no-one thinks of leaving this great team."

Former Hammer on trial in Scotland

Former Hammer, Julien Faubert has joined St Johnstone on trial. The 32-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Bordeaux in 2015 and is seeking to win a contract at McDiarmid Park.
He played for the Scottish Premiership club's Under 20 side on Monday night and was listed as a trialist. Faubert signed for the Hammers for £6.1m in 2007 on a five year contract amid big expectations, but could score only two league goals during 103 appearances. He was famously loaned to Real Madrid for a loan fee thought to £1.5m plus wages while a Hammer, where he was snapped sleeping on the subs bench. His loan spell finished with only two appearances. He is due to return to the Boleyn ground one more time to turn out for Mark Noble for his testimonial on Easter Monday. Earlier this year Faubert told Sky Sports "To be honest West Ham is just an amazing club in England. In France, the people don't know that club like English people. I think that's why I had some problems with the national team. But I really love that club." "West Ham is a part of my life now, and when I go back to Upton Park it feels like home," he says. "I spent a really good time there with crazy, special fans. If I could have finished my career at West Ham, I would have done.

West ham Chairman, David Gold says he is hopeful the Manuel Lanzini will travel with the Hammers squad to Blackburn for the fifth round FA Cup match at Ewood park on Sunday. Gold posted on twitter today "I'm hoping Lanzini travels to Blackburn. dg"
Ten days ago Bilic confirmed Lanzini has resumed first team training saying "On Sunday (7th Feb) Lanzini will start training with the team again, which is a big boost for us," while head of medical and sports science Stijn Vandenbroucke told the club's official website."Lanzini is only a few days away before re-joining the team."

Lanzini is thought unlikely to start but there is a strong possibility he will make the bench and could feature in a small cameo role as he attempts to regain his match fitness.

THE PAYET CONUNDRUM - WHY DIDN'T ANYONE ELSE SIGN HIM BEFORE WEST HAM?
By Iain Dale 16 Feb 2016 at 08:00
WTID
Guest Post by Daniel Grimes

Dimitri Payet has had an exceptional start to his West Ham career. He has greatly impacted not only the club, but the league as a whole. His creativity, quick feet, and seemingly effortless technique have lit up the Premier League, earning him potentially justifiable comparisons stemming from World Cup winner, Mesut Ozil, to West Ham and England legend, Sir Trevor Brooking. Despite missing three months with an ankle injury, 'Super Slaven's' man has picked up seven goals and five assists in just 19 Premier League games.

However, with Payet turning 29 in March, and arriving at The Boleyn Ground in the summer off the back of no fewer than 10 impressive seasons in Ligue 1, you can't help but wonder why it has taken this undeniable talent so long to make his mark on arguably the world's greatest league.

Payet enjoyed successful spells with Nantes, Saint-Etienne, Lille and Marseille, scoring 57 league goals and making it into Ligue 1 Team of the Year in 2013 and 2015. Dimitri was no hidden gem by any means. Performing well for multiple French clubs and earning 15 international caps since 2010, it's clear that his talents were highly regarded in France at least, but why is it that no Premier League club turned their attention to Dimitri until the Summer of 2016?

One reason that could have contributed to this is the shortcomings of players with a similar style who tried their luck in the Premier League, especially those who arrived from Ligue 1. Despite the previous success of players such as Ginola, Cantona and Henry, French players have struggled to emulate the success of these players in England since. This isn't the same for all positions, but it certainly seems to be the trend with the technical positions such as the wingers and attacking midfielders.

Arsenal's former Ivorian winger, Gervinho, arrived from Lille as an exciting player, scoring 36 times in his two previous seasons in France. But, despite his pace and skill, it seemed he wasn't cut out for the Premier League, and Arsene Wenger offloaded him after two seasons.

Newcastle United had high hopes when they brought Remy Cabella to the Premier League for £8m following his four seasons in Ligue 1, where he averaged more than a goal every four games. However, he managed just one goal in 33 Premier League appearances, and was loaned back to Marseilles after just one season as part of the deal to bring French winger, Florian Thauvin (Likened to Franck Ribery) to the Prem for £12m.

Despite being named as one of the 10 most promising players in Europe by The Observer in 2014, Florian's time with Newcastle has proven to have been no better than Cabella's, with the winger already being loaned back to Marseille after just five months and 12 Premier League appearances.

So it is clear to see that even the most promising of Ligue 1's attacking players will or have struggled in the Premier League, and this may pose as too much of a risk for clubs who scouted Payet, as they decided not to take the gamble on him.

Another potential deterrent for any club looking Payet's way would be the Premier Leagues increasing emphasis on the physical side of the game. It is often said that The Prem offers a more physically competitive style of play than any of Europe's other top leagues. This physicality has also lead to some teams prioritising a strong, solid defence in order to combat the growing trend towards powerful attacking players, and athletically robust midfields. Plenty of managers such as Tony Pulis, Sam Allardyce, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have adopted defensive playing styles, favouring hard working players who can contribute in defence as much as attack.

At Chelsea, Mourinho even sold fans favourite Juan Mata off the back of two seasons in which he earned Chelsea's player of the season, just because the creative midfielder didn't track back effectively. This suggests that even top managers are refusing to adapt their tactics in order to suit the style of players who like to attack with freedom, if they aren't capable of pulling their weight off the ball.

This is an area of Payet's game that he has lacked in the past, with former Nantes coach, Stéphane Moreau describing him as a "talented player despite his natural indifference". This 'natural indifference' in Dimitri's game would almost certainly discourage Premier League managers who rely on the commitment and work ethic of their players as much as any characteristic. With Payet's physicality being average at best for a Premier League midfielder, the next best thing would be his work ethic, and with his naturally casual and effortless way of playing the game, it is not surprising to think that some managers would have averted their attention away from Payet.

One final reason as to why it has taken Payet so long to get his chance in the Premier League could possibly be Payet's worth to his former team, Marseille. Payet had been a long term target for Newcastle United during his time in France, but even when Marseille manager Marcelo Bielsa reportedly claimed that Payet had no future at the club back in 2014, the two clubs still couldn't agree on a price.

Marseille brought Payet to the Stade Vélodrome for around £10m, and would have been looking to at least recoup that, if not more. Slaven Bilic himself claimed that he attempted to sign Payet for Besiktas in 2014, and that it was 'impossible' to do a deal. On top of this, Payet's agent may have also made things difficult for clubs interested in him. Jacques-Olivier Auguste allegedly claimed that he wanted his client to stay at Marseille in the summer, despite the ongoing talks with West Ham. And just eight months into his West Ham career, Auguste caused further trouble by demanding his player earns £125,000 per week, which Sullivan and Gold have since given him.

In conclusion, I think it's a combination of these factors that have accumulated into Payet's late start to life in the Premier League. With a number of similar players failing to make their mark on the league, and managers looking towards midfielders that are more defensively sound or physically proficient, it becomes easier to understand why so many clubs decided to look beyond the Frenchman. On top of this, Marseille's valuation of the player, his worth to the club, and quite possibly the interference of Dimitri's agent would have provided an even riskier obstacle for any club who took an interest in the attacking midfielder.

So, two thirds into the season, and it appears that West Ham's bravery in the French transfer market may be paying off.

Former Man City, Man United and West Ham striker Carlos Tevez snubs mega-money move to China
By talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) | Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Former Manchester City, Manchester United and West Ham forward Carlos Tevez has reportedly rejected a move to the Chinese Super League. Tevez has become the latest player to be linked with a lucrative switch to China and reports have suggested he's considered following fellow South American stars Jackson Martinez and Ramires to the Far East. The 32-year-old only left Juventus for La Bombonera last summer but Shanghai SIPG were said to be willing to offer the forward a huge sum of money to play for them for one season. However, according to Argentine newspaper Ole, Tevez has now decided he wants to stay in his home country and finish his career with boyhood club Boca Juniors.
