Incoming West Ham United Academy Manager and Head of Coaching & Player
Development Terry Westley is determined to provide first team manager Sam
Allardyce with a steady flow of homegrown talent. The Hammers boast a proud
tradition of nurturing young players through from the youth teams to top
flight and international football, with current first teamers Mark Noble and
James Tomkins taking their place on the long list of Academy graduates
alongside the likes of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Billy Bonds,
Trevor Brooking, Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard. Westley, who has
played his part in identifying and developing future internationals himself
in similar roles at Ipswich Town, Derby County, Birmingham City and Luton
Town, cannot wait to get down to work at the Boleyn Ground and write another
illustrious chapter in the Academy's history. He explained: "West Ham is a
Club steeped in history with a great tradition for producing their own
players. I've had three tremendous years working for the Premier League, and
in club football before that, but the chance to join a Club with this
history and tradition, helping to bring players through to the first team,
was too big an opportunity to turn down. "To get back on the grass, work
with the young players and with the senior staff, and continue the great
work that Tony Carr has been doing turned my head. I worked with the
Chairmen and Karren Brady at Birmingham City and they've made me very
welcome. I can't wait to get started and start trying to help "I look at my
own career as a coach, and when I was at Ipswich and we had young players
like George Burley, John Wark, Eric Gates, Alan Brazil, Terry Butcher and
Russell Osman playing in the team. It made big news for the supporters -
they can recognise, and identify with, a homegrown player in the team. "This
Club can hold its own with most other clubs with the amount of players
they've brought through to play full international football. I want to try
to help and continue that path, and make it stronger."

While Westley plans to hit the ground running, he will have expert advice to
call upon if needed in the shape of former Academy Manager Tony Carr MBE,
who was recently appointed ambassador for the club after 40 years working in
various coaching roles at the Club. Westley is clearly thrilled to have
someone of Carr's experience to turn to as he looks to help bridge the gap
between the Under-18's and first team. He continued: "The reason I'm here is
to bring players through to the first team squad. I'm delighted that Tony
has stayed because none of this could have happened without that being
sorted out first. He's been an absolute gent since I've arrived, supported
me and told me the good bits and not so good bits and we'll work together to
take the Club forward. "That's the big challenge now, I believe that at 17
and 18 you can still get people in the team. They clearly have to be good
enough and they clearly have to be worked from a young age and we will do
our damndest to make it work."

"I will oversee all age groups from U21 downwards, trying to ensure the
player has all the right tools to transition from Academy to First Team. The
work they do and the development programme they have is crucial, as the
stats prove that players are now in the system for longer before they make
their debut. It's not a case of getting your washbag at 2 o'clock and going
home, there have to be plans in place for the players to continue to
develop, whether that's on loan or in the U21s league. "I've been very
impressed with their application and there are some very talented young
players here. That stands out very quickly, and it's important that we show
those players a pathway, a development plan and we prepare them for first
team football. "This place wants to see some homegrown players in the first
team, just as I do."

Of his own career to date, Westley certainly possesses an impressive
pedigree, with numerous players emerging from his tutelage to shine at the
highest level. He was also taught about the traditions of West Ham while
working with another Hammers legend in former manager John Lyall. He
explained: "I started at Ipswich with John Lyall. I come from a very good
school of John Lyall, Bobby Robson, Charlie Woods, Cyril Lea, Bobby Ferguson
- coaching staff at Ipswich who made a real impression on me with high
standards and great work ethic. "I saw some very good players at Ipswich in
my time there, Richard Wright, James Scowcroft, Titus Bramble, John Wark,
George Burley, Eric Gates, that type. "That gave me a good start and then I
had the opportunity to move to Luton with David Pleat where we had to
produce players to keep the club afloat. "John Hartson, Paul Telfer and
Matthew Upson all came through the system in that time and we sold around
£15m worth of players in the space of five years. "I then worked for Alan
Curbishley at Charlton, with players like Paul Konchesky and Scott Parker,
who both played for their country. At Derby, Tom Huddlestone, Giles Barnes,
Lee Camp and Lee Holmes were players who are still playing League football
now and again one or two of them have gone on to play international
football. "Finally at Birmingham, the current crop of Jordon Mutch, Nathan
Redmond and Jack Butland have all gone on to become Premier League
footballers. I want to help, carry on the great work that's been done here,
and will make every effort to bring the manager some players."

Sebastian Lletget and the Development Squad take on Shakhtar Donetsk and
Espayol this weekend

Sebastian Lletget is looking forward to testing himself against European
opposition this weekend as the Development Squad head to Cambridge for the
Absolute Sports Travel Cup. The tournament features hosts Cambridge United,
the Hammers, Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk and Spanish outfit Espanyol.
West Ham are due to face Shakhtar on Saturday and Espanyol the following
day, with both matches kicking-off at 2pm, and Lletget is ready for the next
phase of his pre-season. He explained: "We've got Shakhtar Donetsk and
Espanyol over the weekend - I want to perform well in those games and
continue to perform in every game I get to play in. "It'll be a good
tournament against some good sides. There'll be a lot of youngsters, so I'll
be one of the more experienced players in our team and hopefully we'll do
well."

Lletget was given a 45-minute runout for the first team on Wednesday against
Ipswich Town, and after making his debut in last season's FA Cup clash at
Nottingham Forest, he relished another chance to play on that stage. He
said: "It's amazing to play with the first team and every time I do, it's a
great experience. I really enjoy playing in front of a crowd and the fans
were fantastic coming out to support us at Ipswich on Wednesday. "It's a
dream come true whenever I get the opportunity and hopefully I can keep
impressing the manager. "Pre-season has been good, the programme has been
spot on and everyone has enjoyed it. It's been tough, but that's how you get
better. "I'm taking it day-by-day this year, taking every training session
as it comes. It's taken me a while to really push on, and I'm aware of that,
but I think everything is for a reason and I feel more than ready now. "I'm
so happy for the other youngsters who had the chance on Wednesday - they
work hard, they are a good group of guys and I hope everything continues to
go well for them."

Raphael Spiegel: Crawley sign West Ham keeper on loan

League One side Crawley Town have signed West Ham goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel
on a one-month loan deal. The 21-year-old Switzerland Under-21 international
joined the Hammers in 2012 but is yet to make his debut. "He is a commanding
presence in the penalty area and a good shot-stopper," Reds boss John
Gregory said. "He's learning his trade at West Ham and this is an
opportunity for him to gain more experience and for us to have a look at
him." Spiegel began his career at Grasshopper Club Zurich, featuring 41
times for their second team and had loan spells at FC Wil 1900 and SC Bruhl
SG. He joined West Ham on a three-year deal in summer 2012 and has featured
regularly for their under-21 side over the last two seasons. Spiegel joins
Crawley until 16 August and is eligible for their first three games of the
season.

Crawley Town have signed West Ham United's fourth-choice goalkeeper Raphael
Spiegel on a short-term loan. The League One club confirmed this morning
that the 21-year-old - who is currently behind Adrian, Jussi Jaaskelainen
and Stephen Henderson in the pecking order at West Ham - will move to
Broadfield Stadium until 16 August. That means Spiegel will also be
available for the Red Devils' opening three matches of the 2014/15 campaign;
Barnsley (away), Ipswich (home, Capital One Cup) and Swindon at home. Town
manager John Gregory told Crawley's website: "We have had excellent reports
about Raphael. He is 6'5" tall, a commanding presence in the penalty area
and a good shot-stopper. "He's learning his trade at West Ham and this is an
opportunity for him to gain more experience and for us to have a look at
him, initially for the next month." Spiegel is set to make his debut this
weekend when Crawley face Championship side Fulham in a friendly at the
Broadfield Stadium.

The Mail are linking West Ham with an audacious double swoop for Manchester
United pair Ashley Young and Wilfried Zaha. According to writer Simon Jones,
Sam Allardyce is mulling over offering both a season-long loan spell at the
Boleyn. The future of both players is considered uncertain following the
departure of former manager David Moyes.

* Stephen Henderson is a transfer target for Championship side Brighton &
Hove Albion, reports the local Argus. Only last week it looked as if Ipswich
were in pole position to land the 26-year-old goalkeeper but the Seagulls
are now considering a move following the departure of former number one
Tomasz Kuszczak, who was released on a free transfer recently.

* West Ham are once again considering a move for Arsenal full back Carl
Jenkinson, according to various sources. The 22-year-old is likely to be
surplus to requirements at the Emirates next season due to the arrival of
Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle this week and West Ham will try to land the
England under 21 either on loan or for a nominal fee.

* Former Hammer Herita Ilunga is poised to seal a move to French side US
Créteil-Lusitanos. Les Béliers currently play in Ligue 2 of the French
pyramid; Ilunga, now 32, will sign a two-year deal with the club after
completing a medical today [Friday].

* Back to the Mail and Mr Jones reports that West Ham have offered to take
Boca Juniors left-back Emanuel Insua on loan for the season. The 23-year-old
defender was previously reported to have been the subject of a £5million bid
by West Ham (Daily Mirror, 27th June) but is now apparently only considered
worth a short-term contract.

* Algerian international midfielder Saphir Taïder is reported to have been
the subject of an undisclosed bid by West Ham. Taider, 22, who currently
plies his trade in Serie A with Inter has three years of his current
contract remaining but is considered excess to requirements at San Siro
following the recent capture of of French midfielder Yann M'villa on loan
from Rubin Kazan.

* There's no new 'news' on the situation with Ivan Strinic, who just 24
hours ago was being cited as Sam Allardyce's potential sixth-signing of
pre-season. The 26-year-old left back is entering the final year of his
contract at Ukrainian Premier League club Dnipro and a number of sources
have claimed West Ham are poised to sign the defender for a cut-price fee.

Former Hammer Jack Collison is hoping to land a contract with Premier League
newcomers Queens Park Rangers. Collison, who penned a 2,800-word letter to
West Ham's supporters upon leaving the club back in May is currently
training with Rangers, who were promoted back to the Premier League thanks
to Bobby Zamora's play-off winner against Derby. Despite having been
strongly linked with the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leeds in recent
weeks, the Welsh international is hoping to remain in the top flight with
Rangers currently in pole position. Speaking at a press conference this
morning, Rangers manager Harry Redknapp said: "This season is about
establishing ourselves in the Premier League. We won't spend fortunes. We'll
invest wisely in the squad. "We need to bring in five or six [players]. We
need to improve the squad in terms of quality and numbers. Jack Collison is
training with us. He's a smashing boy and I'd love to help him out. He's a
fine player."

Redknapp has already signed one former Hammer this transfer window,
following the recent arrival of Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer. "Rio's
wage demands were low," added Redknapp. "He just wanted to come. It was
easy."

Dnipro reject West Ham's bid for Ukraine star Yevhen Konoplyanka

Dnipro have rejected West Ham's offer of £9.5million for winger Yevhen
Konoplyanka, according to Sky sources. The 24-year-old Ukraine international
has been the subject of interest from a host of Premier League clubs over
the past year. Konoplyanka is thought to have a £12m buy-out clause in his
contract and it is likely the Hammers will need to meet that clause in order
to progress with the transfer. And Sky sources understand they could face
competition from at least one other Premier League club. Konoplyanka was
close to a switch to Liverpool in the January transfer window, only for the
deal to break down on deadline day.
Tottenham have also previously expressed interest in the player but it is
understood that neither they nor Liverpool have followed up their initial
contact in recent weeks. West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold have
been active so far in the transfer market after setting manager Sam
Allardyce a target of a top-10 finish in the Premier League. They have
signed Ecuador's World Cup star Enner Valencia, forward Mauro Zarate,
midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, defender Aaron Cresswell and promising
youngster Diego Poyet. But Konoplyanka, with 28 goals in over 100
appearances for Dnipro and eight international goals for Ukraine, would
mark a real coup for the club.

While most of the talk this transfer has been about the five inbound players
a small number of players are due to go out on loan or be sold.

West Ham officially confirmed on Friday that 21 year old Swiss goalkeeper
Raphael Spiegel has joined Crawley Town on a month's loan from our Academy.

Another outbound keeper confirmed on Friday was Stephen Henderson after
being linked Charlton and Brighton and Hove Albion in the week his contract
was terminated by mutual consent in a pay off believed to be worth between
£500,000 and £700,000.

Rumours persist about Newcastle preparing a £10.5m bid for Andy Carroll to
test our resolve to keep him. West Ham insist they have received no official
inquires for him and referred us to Newcastle when we asked.

Carlton Cole is wanted by Fulham for free but the club say they rejected the
advance and claim he is very much part of their plans.

West Ham also claim they rejected advances from West Bromwich Albion to take
Stewart Downing on loan for the season asking why would we?

The club are actively trying to find a club in France to loan Maiga to for
the season and have accepted they may need to subsidize his £30,000 per week
wages to make that happen.

One tabloid insists that Guy Demel is a prime target for newly promoted
Leicester City while other reports suggest he is keen to return to his old
club Hamburg.

Alou Diarra received a £1.25m pay off to terminate his contract earlier this
month.

These are on top of Jack Collison, George McCartney, Matthew Taylor and Joe
Cole who were released at the end of their contracts, Loanees Marco
Borriello, Antonio Nocerino, Pablo Armero and Roger Johnson were also not
offered new deals when it became apparent they were not in Allardyce's
long-term thinking.

Joe Cole has joined Aston Villa while Matt Taylor joined Burnley. Jack
Collison is training with QPR with a view to join them.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ANDY CARROLL?

The absence of our record signing and highest earner Andy Carroll from the
first two pre season friendlies has been a frequent talking point on social
media networks. Although the the 25 year striker reported back for training
at Chadwell Health and flew to Evian, France with the squad he has been
absent for both pre season games. Rumours suggest he had a small niggle and
they were not risking him, this seemed sensible and a credible reason for
his absence. We were assured he would be flying to New Zealand though.

WHTID Author EXWHUEmployee believes his absence is for a totally different
reason suggesting ''Andy Carroll had reported back quite unfit and has been
given an intensive programme to improve fitness and will feature in NZ as
well."

West Ham's official twitter made a point to publish a photo of Andy Carroll
together with his mate Kevin Nolan at Heathrow airport on Thursday night
ready to catch a 23 hour Air Qantas flight to New Zealand. If his lack of
fitness is true lets hope he gets fit soon to repay some of the £15m record
transfer fee and £4m in wages he has earned since becoming a permanent West
Ham player. At 2 goals from 15 appearances last season that is £9.5m per
goal so far or £1.2m per appearance.

In other news new signing Mauro Zarate lasted just 31 minutes on Wednesday
night against Ipswich. Assistant manager Macca suggested he was not yet
match fit saying "He's a little bit behind in training with the little aches
and pains he's had, and we've had to be careful, so it's good for him to
come into a competitive game." This is a guy who played a full season in
Argentina. Again, at a reported £40k per week, let's hope he will earn his
way,

I am just hoping Enner Valencia can hit the ground running since he has just
returned from the World Cup. At least he must be match fit.

Arsenal's Carl Jenkinson a transfer target for West Ham as Gunners sign

Sam Allardyce is trying to sign Arsenal full-back Carl Jenkinson. Jenkinson
has been pushed down the Gunners' pecking order, following the £11million
signing of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle on Thursday. West Ham boss
Allardyce is keen on either a permanent or a one-year loan deal for England
international Jenkinson. Swansea have also made an approach for the
22-year-old, but Allardyce believes the Hammers can offer Jenkinson a
regular place at right-back and a chance to further his career by playing in
the Premier League every week. The Upton Park club's first-choice right-back
last season, Guy Demel, may also be moving on, with promoted Leicester one
of the clubs interested in signing him.

While Van Gaal insists he may take up to four weeks to assess his squad it
is thought that Zaha and Young will be made available by United before the
start of next season. And that has seen Sam Allardyce express an interest in
taking the pair on loan. Zaha - Sir Alex Ferguson's last signing as United
boss - struggled at Old Trafford after making a £15m move from Crystal
Palace and was loaned out to Cardiff in January. But Allardyce seems ready
to gamble that the 21-year-old can rediscover his form back in London and
get a promising career back on track. Young is another player who has found
it difficult to make an impression at United in recent times. The winger
initially impressed after making the move from Aston Villa in 2011 but has
dropped down the pecking order in recent times and seems unlikely to be part
of Van Gaal's plans moving forward. It now remains to be seen whether United
are amenable to short-term deals for the pair or whether the Red Devils
would prefer to offload the pair permanently to raise funds for further
summer additions.

Why West Ham and Sam Allardyce shouldn't take the risk on Manchester
United's Wilfried Zaha

This week, it feels the footballing world has been focusing on Louis van
Gaal, fresh from his heroics of guiding Netherlands to third place at the
World Cup, taking over the reigns at Manchester United.

I've read a lot about his supposed plans, which players he's going to keep
and which players he was going to let go, and one name jumped out to me for
obvious reasons: Wilfried Zaha. It is reported that Van Gaal wants shot of
the man that Sir Alex signed just over 18 months ago for £10 million pounds.

It has since been reported that Sam Allardyce at West Ham is interested in
signing him. Although Cardiff and West Ham fans don't traditionally get
along, I would advise them to stay away from the man who doesn't give two
hoots about the team he's playing for, he only cares about brand Zaha.

Last season, when Cardiff City needed a player who would be selfless for the
team, would give 100 per cent commitment they got a player who would rather
do four step overs, beat a man just to lose the ball to the second defender,
than actually pass to a player in a better position.

But that didn't matter because brand Zaha had another five5 second clip to
add to his highlight reel.

This was a player who would pull out of 75-25 in his favour challenges to
stop from potential injury. The player who literally ripped the shirt of the
team he played for in two when he got substituted and walked down the
tunnel. The player who applauded the fans of his e-team when they were
chanting for him to come home during a relegation crunch match.

Big Sam teams are typically fighters. They are usually a team of players who
will rip, claw, scram anything they can. They will put their bodies on the
line and are not adverse to the 'dark arts of football'.

Zaha would not fit in this team. Yes he is skillful, but if things are not
going his way, he sulks on the pitch. He wouldn't do the hard graft or chase
back. In my opinion, and I'm not sure how many West Ham fans would agree,
but I think Stuart Downing is far better in the role that Zaha would take
up.

The only club I feel that Zaha will ever feel comfortable at, and will
flourish is back home with Crystal Palace, because their fans, rightly or
wrongly, treat him like a god.

In his head, thats the only place that he will be treated like he deservers.
If he doesn't end up going back to Palace, from what I witnessed last
season, he will be another player with all the potential in the world, but a
bad attitude and a wasted career.

QPR new-boy Rio Ferdinand turned down a move back to West Ham
RIO FERDINAND was so desperate to be reunited with Harry Redknapp at QPR he
snubbed a return to West Ham.

Ferdinand's first club West Ham and London rivals Tottenham were two of the
sides he rejected to join newly-promoted Rangers. Free agent Ferdinand, 35,
took a massive pay cut to sign a £40,000-a-week one-year Rangers deal. And
Redknapp insists ex-England skipper Ferdinand is a man with a point to prove
after being released by Manchester United. Redknapp, who gave centre-half
Ferdinand his senior debut at West Ham, said: "He didn't need convincing -
he wanted to come to QPR. "He spoke to two top London clubs, but he wanted
to come here and to play. "He could have gone elsewhere and maybe not
played at times but he wants to play football. He's like a little boy. "He's
been saying 'I've not been sleeping I've been so excited about coming to
play'. "He could have gone to Dubai or Qatar and earned a fortune. "His wage
demands were so incredibly low in my opinion. It was an easy deal to do. "He
was fit all last season, but David Moyes came in and wanted to change the
team around.

Irons react on Jenkinson

West Ham United have confirmed an interest in Arsenal right back Carl
Jenkinson. National newspaper reports emerged this morning linking Sam
Allardyce with the player who is very much on the fringes at the Emirates.
The reports added that Guy Demel was a target for newly promoted Leicester
City and that Jenkinson was very much a target. ClaretandHugh has learned
since that the Hammers do have an interest in the player but haven't yet
established whether the Gunners are prepared to let the defender leave the
club. We were told: "If Arsenal are ready to let him leave on a loan or
permanently we would be interested. He's one of several we are looking at."
Jenkinson is rated at around £5 million.

Jack Collison is training at QPR in a bid to earn a permanent contract with
Harry Redknapp's side. The 25-year-old was released by West Ham in the
summer after nine years at the club following prolonged spells on the
sidelines through injury. Stretch out: Collison and Ferdinand speak with
each other during the training session on Friday morning The Welsh
international will therefore be hoping this is the fresh start he needs to
reignite his career. Collison - who spent time on loan at both Bournemouth
and Wigan last season - has been linked with a move to various Championship
clubs this summer, but Redknapp has now given him the chance to stake a
claim for a move to a Premier League side. After making his way through the
West Ham youth system, Collison would go on to make 121 appearances for the
Irons scoring 14 goals in the process. Elsewhere, Rangers striker Charlie
Austin has quashed speculation linking him with a move away from Loftus Road
by declaring he is happy at the club. Midfielder Samba Diakite is also close

The midfielder – currently recovering from surgery on a persistent groin
injury – is now into the last year on his present contract. And
ClaretandHugh learned exclusively today that the club has still not spoken
to the player of his agent about a new one. However, we have also been told
that manager Sam Allardyce was keen for him to get the operation out of the
way in order for him to be challenging for a first team spot this season.
Morrison's agent Nick Rubery talking to ClaretandHugh this morning (Fri)
revealed: "There have been no talks about a new deal. "Ravel is determined
only to get over the operation as quickly as possible and get back on the
pitch. "His whole focus is on performing for West Ham this season – that's
been the situation since the season ended. He wants a big year." Rubery
indicated he was ready to enter talks with the Hammers board whenever they
are ready and at some stage that will happen. However we learned from a club
insider: "The club has three options – offer a contract, let this one run
down or see if any bids are made. "There's no new offer on the table at this
stage and the club will monitor everything surrounding the player carefully
and see how things play out over the forthcoming weeks before deciding where
they are going with it."

West Ham United are delighted to announce that exciting Ecuador
international forward Enner Valencia will become the Club's fifth summer
signing, subject to a successful work permit hearing. The Hammers fought off
competition from a host of Europe's leading clubs to secure the services of
the 25-year-old from Mexican side Pachuca. Valencia, who impressed hugely in
scoring three goals for his country at the FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil,
will join West Ham on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Born in
the port town of San Lorenzo on the north coast of Ecuador, close to the
Colombian border, Valencia began his career with Club Sport Emelec in the
city of Guayaquil. There, the forward helped Emelec to reach the Ecuadorean
Serie A Championship Finals and the group stage of the Copa Libertadores -
South America's premier continental competition - in both 2010 and 2011.
Valencia starred as Emelec reached the Copa Libertadores round of 16 and the
Serie A Championship Finals again in 2012. In February of the same year, the
athletic frontman was handed his senior international debut by Ecuador
manager Reinaldo Rueda in a friendly match against Honduras.

The year 2013 was the best of Valencia's career to date, with his club
winning the Serie A title for the first time in eleven years and also
topping the goalscoring charts in the Copa Sudamerica - South America's
equivalent of the UEFA Europa League - with five goals in just four matches.
Valencia was also able to celebrate his first international goal in a 2-2
draw against Honduras last November. That outstanding form saw the
Ecuadorian move to Pachuca in January 2014. In Mexico, he hit the net with
unerring regularity, banging in 18 goals in just 23 Torneo Clausura
appearances as Pachuca finished as runners-up to Leon.
Prior to his eye-catching World Cup performances, Valencia came to the
attention of English football fans when he headed Ecuador in front in their
pre-tournament draw with Roy Hodgson's side in Miami.

In Brazil, he picked up where he had left off by opening the scoring in
Ecuador's first group-stage fixture against Switzerland. He then netted both
goals as the South Americans defeated Honduras 2-1, taking his tally to
seven in 13 internationals. Valencia becomes West Ham's fifth summer signing
following the captures of Argentine forward Mauro Zarate, Senegalese
midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, left-back Aaron Cresswell and promising
youngster Diego Poyet. Subject to a successful work permit hearing, he will
become the first Ecuadorian to play for the Hammers and the ninth to appear
in the Barclays Premier League following the late Christian Benitez, Felipe
Caicedo, Segundo Castillo, Ulises de la Cruz, Agustin Delgado, Fernando
Guerrero, Ivan Kaviedes and namesake Antonio Valencia.

Aaron Cresswell is settling into life well at West Ham United and came so
close to notching his first goal in claret and blue as he returned to his
old club on Wednesday night. Less than two weeks after joining the Hammers
from Ipswich Town, 24-year-old defender Cresswell found himself back at
Portman Road as his new team took on the Tractor Boys in a 0-0 draw.
Cresswell came closest of all to breaking the deadlock when his deft chip
struck the crossbar, and although that chance went astray, he is happy at
how his Hammers career has begun. He said: "All the lads and all the staff
have been great with me. We went to France for eight days and now we head to
New Zealand on Thursday. It'll be a long journey, but an enjoyable one and
I'll get to mingle with the lads and get to know them even more. "Had the
chip gone in, I think the goalkeeper Deano [Gerken] would still be chasing
me now! "I'd have been delighted if I had scored, but he wouldn't have been!
I actually tried to put the ball to the back stick, but it ended up hitting
the bar - it was one of those things."

And while a first West Ham goal was not to be, Cresswell still had plenty to
smile about upon returning to his old stamping ground. The highly-regarded
left-back was afforded the warmest of receptions, having been held in
particularly high esteem by the Ipswich faithful. "It was a bit strange
coming back. I was here for three years, but as I've said before it was nice
to come back and see the lads I spent that time with."

"It meant a lot to get the reception I did - the fans have been first class
with me, and since the day I left I haven't had one bad message.
Everything's been positive and I can't thank them enough for the last three
years."

On the pitch, the Scouser showed promising signs of a link-up with Matt
Jarvis during the first half and he will be using the pre-season games to
further that understanding with teammates all over the pitch. He added:
"Jarvo's obviously a great player and he's played in the Premier League for
a number of years now. "I'm just going to take each game as it comes, and
whoever's in front of me I'll try to link up with them as best as I can.
"It's all about fitness, getting your heart rate up and getting your match
fitness. I enjoyed it out there on Wednesday. "We've got five games in
pre-season and the more I play with the back four the more I'll get to know
them."

West Ham: Hammers fans vote in favour of new club crest

West Ham fans have voted in favour of plans for a new club badge before the
move to the Olympic Stadium. The Hammers intend to introduce the crest on
shirts when they move from the Boleyn Ground for the 2016-17 season. In an
online vote, conducted over 48 hours by SMG Yougov, 56% of fans said they
liked the new design. The redesign will see a castle, linked to the current
Boleyn Ground home, removed, and the word 'London' added underneath two
hammers.

Some fans were unhappy at the removal of the castle, and said using the word
London was unnecessary. After feedback from supporters, the word 'United'
will be slightly larger in size below 'West Ham'. The club says its badge
has been altered on average once every 10 years, although the current design
has existed since 1999. The new design is not expected to feature on shirts
or other club merchandise until the move four miles across east London.

reportedly worth £12m, is West Ham's fifth summer signing. Valencia, 24,

Fans back new crest design

56 per cent of supporters who responded to West Ham United's recent YouGov
poll have voted in favour of updating the club's crest. West Ham United
confirmed this morning that the new crest, designed by WTF Creative has been
given the green light to replace the current logo, as used since 1999.
The club have also taken into account some of the more popular views that
arose following the initial unveiling of the new design. As a result,
slight changes have been implemented to the original design that was first
demonstrated, with the word 'United' now given prominence over the word
'London' - whereas both words were previously the same sized font.
Meanwhile the blue used has also become slightly less vibrant, whilst some
of the shadowing that appeared on the first draft has been tempered
slightly.
YouGov Managing Director Frank Saez told whufc.com: "This represents a
credible and robust sample of the total supporter base. The results provided
to West Ham clearly state that the new crest is supported by the majority of
fans. "This concludes one of the most thorough supporter consultation
processes ever conducted by a Premier League club with regards to a new
crest. "Our findings show that respondents who engaged in the Club's
extensive research and thought processes from initial consultation were
overwhelmingly more positive than those who had begun the process afresh in
this, the latter stage."

Enner Valencia has finally completed his move to West Ham. The news was
confirmed this morning by co-owner David Sullivan's son Jack, who revealed
via Twitter that the deal - thought to be worth in excess of £12million -
had finally been sealed. Valencia, who underwent a medical on Tuesday
returned to Ecuador yesterday to complete formalities. According to Master
Sullivan, he is currently on his way back to the UK via an interconnecting
flight from Spain.
Valencia revealed last night that he has signed a five-year deal with West
Ham. Speaking to Ecuador-based radio station Deportiva. ""I'm happy to join
a very good team with very friendly people," he said.

arrival of Valencia will ensure the team are less reliant on Carroll for an
attacking threat.
The England forward struggled with injuries last season and West Ham found
goal scoring difficult in his absence, although they emerged from a poor run
of form to finish the season in 13th place.

Sky sources report that West Ham have made a £4million bid for Boca Juniors
defender Emanuel Insua. The 23-year-old left-back is the younger brother of
former Liverpool defender Emiliano Insua and Boca are reportedly open to
offers for his services. West Ham have made a number of moves in the
transfer market this summer and Insua would be their sixth new arrival if a
deal can be agreed. The Hammers have already landed one Argentinian, having
signed Velez Sarsfield forward Mauro Zarate in May. And they have just
completed a deal for Enner Valencia, the Ecuador forward who made a big
impact at the World Cup in Brazil.

Sky Sports understands West Ham are closing in on the signing of Croatian
defender Ivan Strinic. Strinic is entering the final year of his contract at
Dnipro and the Russian club are open to offers for the full-back rather than
risk losing him for nothing next season. West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is keen
to bolster his left-back options despite recently signing Aaron Cresswell
from Ipswich to fill that role. Allardyce wants to bring in Strinic to add
depth to his squad so that the 26-year-old can battle Cresswell for the
left-back spot in his starting XI next season. Strinic, who has been linked
with a move to England in the past, is thought to be keen on a move to the
Premier League. Strinic was named in Croatia preliminary World Cup squad for
Croatia this summer, but failed to make the final 23 for the finals in
Brazil.

HAVE WEST HAM BID £4M FOR EMANUEL INSUA?

Following on from the confirmation of the signing of Enner Valencia (subject
to a work permit), Sky Sports News (SSN) are also reporting that West Ham
have submitted a £4m bid for Boca Junior's defender, Emanuel Insua. Insua is
a promising, 23 year old, Argentine left back, who has been targeted to
provide cover and compete with summer signing, Arron Cresswell. If the deal
is completed, with Cresswell, Insua, Potts and O'Brien in the squad, the
vulnerable left-back position should be well covered for the coming season.
However, there is also reported interest in Isua by Southampton and possibly
Liverpool. So, the club need to move quickly to tie up a deal.

Will Isua be our 6th summer signing? Perhaps that transfer pot is not
exhausted just yet after all? Elsewhere, we are also being linked with
Inter-Milan's Algerian international midfielder, Saphir Taider and, it has
been reported by kumb, that we are currently giving a trial to 20 year old,
Polish centre forward, Adrian Wojcik Kosela.

In terms of outgoing deals, there is mounting speculation that Brighton &
Hove Albion, Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town have all expressed an
interest in Hammers reserve keeper, Stephen Henderson. There are rumours
circulating that the club may be willing to loan Henderson next season, with
a 50/50 salary sharing deal oiling the wheels of a move. However, still no
concrete news on a Maiga or Vaz Te exit.

THAMES IRONWORKS HERITAGE TRUST

I'd like to introduce the trust and the charity row that willl be taking
place on the 2nd of August. In case you hadn't heard about us, the Thames
Ironworks Heritage Trust's main goals are to save the remaining boats made
by the Thames Ironworks, restore them back in east London, and then put them
to work providing educational tours of the waterways of the Olympic park and
around. Its a lot to do with educating young people (who in restoring boats
and piloting them will learn real life skills), getting people interested in
using the waterways of east London, which have been neglected for years, and
of course to help tie the club back into its original heritage just a mile
or so down from the new stadium. You can read more about us here:

We have already brought two boats back home and are in the process with
Newham Council to find a permanent site for the boatyard. once that's done
we will be tapping up the grant making bodies (principally the heritage
lottery fund) for money to get the work started. We aim eventually to have a
home on the stadium island next to the new ground, giving a real and
tangible presence to the heritage the club is trying to revive with its
recent attempts at changing the club's badge.

The club are fully behind the project and have done a few articles on the
official site promoting us. No readies as yet though So we still rely on
donations from fans. We are hoping that the Endurance Row that's being done
by the fans at the Southend Coastal Rowing Club (with help from the Lower
Thames Rowing Club) on the 2nd August will help generate donations. They
will be rowing from Southend pier to the Olympic park (actually the finish
is Bar 90 in hackney Wick as the Olympic waterways are still shut), which is
a massive feat.

I wonder if fans could help spread the word ahead of the row? It should also
be a good drink up at the bar after the row, so a good opportunity for
hammers fans who aren't going over to Germany to meet up over a few beers.
We'll be running an online auction simultaneously with a few items donated.
Kosmo Vinyl is sending over one of his works and we have a few other pieces.
I've got loads of vintage shirts, a couple of old hammers signatures on them
should help the sale price.

The cost of Hammer Valencia

West Ham could end up paying just £1 million less for Enner Valencia than
they shelled out for record signing Andy Carroll. Although the fee will
remain undisclosed, ClaretandHugh understands that the final figure could
rise as high as £14 million for the Ecuador international. The club
announced today that Valencia becomes the club's fifth summer signing,
subject to a successful work permit hearing – as we told readers on Monday!.
We also revealed a work permit would be required which will be sorted when
Sam Allardyce returns from New Zealand to represent the cl;ub at the
hearing. A source laughed when commenting to us earlier this afternoon: "We
don't see a problem with the work permit – Enner scored more goals at the
World Cup than England." We understand the Hammers will pay £9.5 million up
front but that various add ons and extras could see the fee rise to £14m.

Charlton want Henderson

Charlton are challenging Brighton and Hove Albion for the services of out of
favour Hammers keeper Stephen Henderson. Despite claims in the Brighton
media that the Seagulls are keen on the stopper, ClaretandHugh has learned
that the Irishman could be bound for the Addicks. We understand preliminary
talks have been held over a loan move for the player and that a wage sharing
deal will be agreed should the Hammers decide to do a deal. Henderson has
seen possible moves to Blackburn and Ipswich break down which are believed
to have been down to his £20k a week wages. An Irons source told
ClaretandHugh: "There's a possibility of a move to a Charlton which will
involve us in a wages subsidy."

FT: Not a second of added time is played as referee Darren Deadman ends
proceedings with the scoresheet still blank. The first half provided chances
for both sides, and the Hammers went as close as possible without scoring
when Cresswell struck the woodwork. In truth, the game lost a bit of its
sparkle after the break, but another useful run-out for the Hammers, against
a higher class of opposition from Saturday.
It's New Zealand next on the agenda for Big Sam's men and we'll be there to
bring you every kick from the Football United tour. See you then!
83: Vaz Te is in the thick of the action again and he has a wonderful chance
to notch from 10 yards as McCallum does well to get around the back and pull
across, but he can't get the right direction on his shot and it passes wide
of the right hand post.
82: Sub Lletget is fouled 30 yards out, but Vaz Te is not put off by the
distance from goal as he sends a searing, dipping effort just over the bar
and brushing the roof ot the net as it flies past a relieved Bialkowski's
fingertips.
78: Mauro Zarate's first run-out in a Hammers shirt has come to an end, as
he makes way for Paul McCallum up front.
77: The crowd had just been announced as 8,976 with 1,920 having made their
way up from east London for this one. Great support once again from the
claret and blue army!
75: Kevin Nolan provokes the ire of the home crowd by chasing down a
backpass to Bialkowski, sliding in and catching the keeper as he slams
clear. He's up quickly and it's all forgotten over a handshake. Might have
been a booking in a competitive game, that.
72: What a smart stop that is from Ipswich keeper Bialkowski. It looks for
all the world that Lletget is about to give the Hammers the lead when his
swings his left foot at a shot from 15 yards, but the home glovesman sticks
up an arm and diverts the ball away with a strong wrist. Still, but can we
build on that over the last 15 minutes or so?
69: As I say that, Cullen gives the ball away in midfield, allowing Murphy
to break on the Hammers backline. The Academy player does a great job of
atoning for his error by sprinting back into his own box to clear the
eventual cross behind with an expertly-timed diving header.
68: Halfway through the second period now and it's fair to say this half
hasn't matched the first for entertainment value. Little in the way of
goalmouth action since the interval, but the Hammers defence, which includes
a couple of youngsters has remained untroubled.
66: That breakthrough almost came straight away though as O'Brien dinks a
cross into the area and Lletget arches his back and stretches his neck
muscles to forces a header towards goal. It slides a foot wide of the mark
though as Bialkowski watches it wide.
65: A good spell of possession from the Hammers ends with O'Brien
overlapping around Vaz Te and sending in a cross which is blocked away for a
corner. Vaz Te's flag kick fizzes through the area, but Ipswich clear and we
still await the breakthrough.
62: The corner comes in from the right hand side and Luke Chambers finds
himself in a pocket of space, but he can't keep his header under the
crossbar and West Ham escape. The Ipswich man should have done better there
really.
61: Play swings to the other end and Chambers is required to head over his
own bar after a testing cross comes over from the right hand side.
60: Neat interplay on the edge of the box gives Seb Lletget a shooting
chance as he clips the ball over the defender's foot before shooting
goalwards. The effort lacks real purchase though and Ipswich stopper
Bialkowski gets right behind it.
55: That's a corner for Ipswich down the right hand side and although the
Hammers head clear, Veseli is there 25 yards out to control and volley
towards goal. The shot has some dip on it, but it comes too late and the
ball flies over the top.
54: Not a great deal to report so far in the second period as this set of 22
players get used to the pace of the game. The Hammers have a few youngsters
on show now. Leo Chambers and Seb Lletget featured in cup games for the
Hammers last term, but this is a relatively new experience for both Lewis
Page and Josh Cullen, who have never played a competitive game for the first
team.
51: It's the hosts who have the first sight of goal of the second period as
Murphy bursts towards the box and fires for goal, but Chambers is there to
make the block.
49: Ipswich have also made wholesale changes and their second half line-up
is Bialkowski, Parr, Chambers, Smith, Wyatt, Anderson. Hyam, Veseli, Tabb,
Murphy, Taylor
46: We're back underway here at Portman Road and it's a totally different
line-up for the Hammers. Now we have Adrian in goal, O'Brien, Chambers, Reid

HT: The whistle goes for the break and it remains 0-0 at Portman Road. Both
sides have had chances though, with Cresswell striking the bar and Diame
having a shot deflected just wide for the Hammers. At the other end Marriott
dragged a shot just past the post with Nouble lurking at the far post.
Neither keeper has been beaten yet, so hopefully we can break the deadlock
soon! Join us in 15 minutes for the second period, with a host of changes
expected.
43: Ipswich think they have a chance to break as the ball is cleared out of
their box, but James Tomkins steps in to win possession back for the
visitors. He gives the ball to Noble, whose lofted through ball picks out
Jarvis. He looks to bend the ball into the far corner, but can't get the
whip on his shot and it rolls tamely into keeper Gerken's hands.
40: The tempo has dropped slightly as half-time approaches, but there's been
plenty to entertain so far. The only thing we're lacking right now is a
goal!
36: Neat passing from the Hammers on the edge of the area between Noble,
Kouyate and Jarvis. However it gets a bit crowded as Jarvis tries to work it
back into Cole and Ipswich manage to get the ball clear.
34: Left back to left back as Cresswell crosses teasingly from the left, and
with Carlton Cole bearing down on the delivery, Ipswich defender Mings dives
in to head behind. A top clearance from the home man. West Ham then work the
corner short and Noble curls wide from 20 yards.
32: Ipswich have looked slightly more threatening in the last five minutes
and they win a corner down he right, which Stewart delivers. However, Demel
is there to head both his initial corner, and follow up cross away. Strong
stuff in the air from the Ivorian.
29: West Ham respond with a great chance of their own as Noble gets into a
fantastic position down the right and cuts back low. Diame's shot looks
destined for the net, but a defender gets a telling touch on it to divert
just past the post.
26: The chance of the game so far and it falls to Ipswich. Kouyate comes
back towards his own goal to tackle Skuse, but in doing so he diverts the
ball into Marriott's path. He runs and and beats Collins, allowing him to
advance into the area and shoot for goal. He opts to go across Jaaskelainen,
but drags his effort slightly, missing both the far post and Nouble, who
dived in trying to convert. Still 0-0.
22: The opening chapter to this game has been an entertaining one, despite
the lack goals. Ipswich have got into promising positions on a couple of
occasions, but it is the Hammers who are creating the better opportunities,
with the left hand side providing a particularly fruitful source of
ammunition at present.
21: It's Ipswich's turn to attack and a low ball from the left finds Stewart
in a really good position, but his attempt at a sidefooted shot only cannons
into his teammate Nouble and bounces away.
20: Downing feeds the ball into Cole's feet and goes for the return to shoot
with his right foot from outside the box. His effort is not on target though
and Gerken can watch it wide.
17: More joy down that left hand side as Jarvis spreads the ball out to
Diame on the touchline. He slows his pace down before speeding up to get
past Hewitt, but his cross is a shade too deep and Downing can't get the
ball under his spell. Ipswich can't really cope with the Hammers down this
nearside flank at present.
14: Now even closer from Cresswell! Once more the Hammers threat comes down
the left hand side as Jarvis tricks his way inside and past his man. He then
passes to Cresswell, whose audacious chip beats home keeper Gerken but
crashes off the face of the crossbar. So close to a goal on his old home
pitch.
12: A whisker away from Downing at the other end now as this game has a real
ebb-and-flow about it early on. Diame looked to take his man on at the edge
of the area, and although he was held up, he managed to shift the ball onto
Downing, who created the yard he needed to shoot, but just a touch over the
bar.
10: Demel sells Noble just a touch short with his pass allowing Ipswich's
Bishop to nip in and take possession. Skuse takes up the running and drives
towards the edge of he box but doesn't catch his shot correctly and it
dribbles wide.
7: The chances are flowing for West Ham at the moment, and again it comes
down the left as Cresswell passes into Cole, who lays into Jarvis' path. The
No7 has to stretch to make connection with his shot and the ball flies just
over the top.
6: Kouyate has another go as a left-wing Hammers corner is only half cleared
by the home defence. This time a defender gets in the way to prevent the
Senegal midfielder's shot from troubling
4: Jarvis, who scored at Stevenage on Saturday, is picking up where he left
off and he stands an excellent cross up to the far post, where Kouyate is
charging in to meet. However, he can't get over the ball and the home side
escape.
2: The Hammers make inroads for the first time as Demel sweeps a pass out to
Jarvis on the far side. His first touch takes him inside his man and he
looks to feed Cole inside the area, but he is crowded out as he looks to
bring the ball under control.
1: There's an early opportunity for Ipswich right back Elliott Hewitt to
advance down his flank and cross, but Guy Demel is there at the far post to
bring under control and clear away from danger. First moment of danger dealt
with calmly.

With West Ham United heading to his homeland on Thursday, Winston Reid has
spent the past few weeks fielding questions galore about New Zealand. While
the All Whites captain welcomes the media attention surrounding the Hammers'
long-distance Football United Tour, the defender was delighted to be
concentrating 100 per cent on football again at the weekend. The No2 was
part of the side which drew 2-2 at Stevenage in their opening pre-season
fixture, safely negotiating 45 minutes as West Ham began their preparations
for the 2014/15 Barclays Premier League campaign. Obviously it was nice to
be back into game mode, I guess," he agreed. "It was a bit hot out there,
but we got through it and I got 45 minutes under my belt, which was the most
important thing. We didn't pick any injuries, either, which was good."

Reid lined up alongside youngster Leo Chambers at the heart of the defence,
while new boys Aaron Cresswell and Diego Poyet filled the left-back and
defensive midfield berths respectively. The Kiwi said the pair, along with
Senegal midfielder and half-time substitute Cheikhou Kouyate, had all
settled in well since their recent arrivals. "It's always nice to get the
guys in early and Aaron, Cheikh and Diego have all come in and done well,"
he confirmed. "I'm sure they will be keen to push on forward from here and
now."

All three are expected to be involved again when West Ham travel to Ipswich
Town on Wednesday evening before joining the squad to fly out to New Zealand
the following evening. Reid was part of the Hammers side thrashed 5-1 at
Portman Road in the Championship in January 2012 and 3-1 at the same venue
in pre-season eight months later. With those games in mind, the centre-back
wants an improved showing this time around. "It's always about performances
and getting minutes under your belt in pre-season and avoiding injuries as
well. Hopefully come Thursday everyone will be all right and we'll jump on
the plane and go to New Zealand."

Reid might have left Auckland 14 years ago, but he still has family and
friends there, after spending time with film crews from New Zealand in
recent weeks, he is relishing the return home. "It's been nice to speak with
journalists from back home instead of West Ham TV, so it's been great!" he
joked. "Obviously I still play for the national team down there so I try to
follow what's going on down there as much as possible. "New Zealand is my
home, so I'll always have an interest in what is going on down there."

One event that will go on down in New Zealand next week is the visit of
teams from Reid's old school, Milford, and club, Takapuna, to a West Ham
training session. The player is looking forward to meeting youngsters who
hope to follow in his footsteps one day. "It's exciting. It's a long time
since I've been there so it'll be nice to go back. I played for the school
and Takapuna between the ages of five and ten, when I moved to Denmark, so
it's going to be nice to go back home and see them. "It's going to be the
middle of winter, but I can't complain! I'll be telling the guys to put a
beanie hat on, and hopefully we'll get some sun on a couple of the days!
"We're going a long way around the world, so it'll be nice for the fans down
there to come along and see how we train and everything. It'll be a good
opportunity for us and for them."

West Ham United tackle Wellington Phoenix at Eden Park in Auckland on

website Sport Review reports this afternoon that the 20-year-old has arrived
in London ahead of a week-long trial. It is believed that Kosela, who

The 30-year-old striker signed a new 18-month contract with West Ham back in
January but could be off to West London just six months later to join the
Cottagers, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last
season, according to KUMB sources. Fulham are determined to make an instant
return to the top flight and have already shelled out a Championship-record
£11million fee for former Leeds striker and West Ham target Ross McCormack.
And manager Felix Magath is keen to pair the 27-year-old Scottish
international with Cole, who made 30 appearances for West Ham last season
scoring six times in the process. The impending arrival of Enner Valencia -

Enner Valencia confirmed tonight that he has signed a five-year contract
with West Ham. The 24-year-old forward is set to be confirmed as West Ham's
latest signing imminently and speaking to Ecuador-based radio station
Deportiva last night, revealed that he was looking forward to playing at the
Boleyn Ground.
"I'm happy to join a very good team with very friendly people," he said.
"The deal was completed yesterday [Tuesday] and it's a five-year contract.
"There were some difficulties with parts of the contract but it was resolved
to the satisfaction of all parties. [Manchester United winger] Antonio
Valencia has also helped me, with him being in England."

West Ham are understood to have applied for a work permit. Due to Valencia's
regular appearances for Ecuador since 2012, it is thought unlikely that any
problems will arise. The fee remains undisclosed.

West Ham have signed Ecuador striker Enner Valencia from Mexican club
Pachuca for a fee in the region of £15million, according to Sky sources. The
25-year-old, who scored all three of Ecuador's World Cup goals in Brazil
this summer, has put pen to paper on a reported five-year contract after
agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. Hammers manager Sam Allardyce
beat off competition from several other Premier League clubs to sign
Valencia, whose fee could equal the club record £15m paid for Andy Carroll.
He will become West Ham's fifth signing of the summer, joining Argentine
striker Mauro Zarate, centre-back or midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, Ipswich
Town left-back Aaron Cresswell and Charlton midfielder Diego Poyet at the
club. Valencia also caught the attention ahead of the World Cup when he
scored a header for Ecuador in a 2-2 friendly draw with England in Miami,
and prior to that he had netted 18 goals in 23 outings for his club. West
Ham winger Stewart Downing has already tipped Valencia to be a success

last season we played without a striker. We can't rely on Andy all season.

Livorno president Aldo Spinelli has confirmed that West Ham, Stoke and
Southampton are among the Premier League clubs eyeing a move for Brazilian
striker Paulinho. The 28-year-old, who found the net 15 times in 35 Serie A
appearances during the last campaign, is also said to have attracted
interest from Verona in the Italian top flight. Livorno are preparing for
life in Serie B after suffering relegation last season and Spinelli admitted
that Paulinho would be available for less than £8million as his future looks
almost certain to be elsewhere. Spinelli told Tuttomercatoweb: "Not only
Verona are looking at the player. West Ham, Stoke City and Southampton are
tracking him in the Premier League, while in Dubai two clubs are interested.

West Ham United have offered Winston Reid a new long-term contract, Sky
Sports understands. The 26-year-old has been outstanding for The Hammers
since joining from Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2010. He signed a new deal
last summer, but that only took him to 2015 and West Ham are now looking to
extend that further, as they are aware a number of their Premier League
rivals are taking a keen interest in Reid's situation. Sources have
confirmed to Sky Sports that Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and
Manchester United are all monitoring Reid, but West Ham are determined to
keep him. With that in mind, they tabled an offer to Reid and his
representatives earlier this month and hope to conclude a deal before the
start of the Premier League season in August.

VALENCIA DEAL SUBJECT TO WORK PERMIT

Despite most of the media saying Enner Valencia has already signed for as
much as £15m there is a few more hurdles for West Ham to jump before he can
be announced as a West Ham player.

Although the medical has been passed and personal terms have been agreed
with the player the two clubs have yet to complete the legal paperwork. With
the time difference with Mexico being six hours behind this has been a slow
process and may take a couple more days to finalise I hear. Although figures
of £12m to £15m have been quoted in the press I understand the initial fee
is likely to be much lower (around the £7m mark) but with add-ons, goals,
appearances and other targets it could take the final amount close to the
media quoted amount eventually. There is also rumour of a sell on clause
while others suggest the Mexican club will retain 30% ownership which I find
unlikely.

An initial £7m fee would take us very close to our £20m transfer kitty
budget after spending £7.5m on Kouyate, £1m on Zarate & Poyet in agent fees
and compensation and £3.75m on Cresswell. Any further signing would need to
be free transfers, loan or cheap deals so you can discount any mega money
transfer rumours.

Valencia will also need to get a work permit to work in this country which
should a formality considering his World cup appearances but with Sam
Allardyce flying to New Zealand tomorrow night with the rest of the team it
seems unlikely the work permit will be completed within the next two weeks.
Sam would usually be present to the Work permit panel to give it credibility
so hence the possible delay.

Despite the work permit issue I still expect West Ham to announce Valencia
as a new player but will say it is subject to him getting his work permit.

Valencia joined Emelec in 2008 from Caribe Junior's youth system, From 2008
to early 2010 he received no opportunities in the first team, but with the
arrival of the Argentinian coach Jorge Sampaoli, Valencia started to receive
playtime opportunities. Valencia's first professional career goal was on
10th March 2010, scoring the only goal to gain an important away win against
Ecuadorian giants LDU Quito.

Valencia initially began his career as a winger, but was converted to play
as a striker by Emelec coach Gustavo Quinteros. Reinaldo Rueda started
experimenting with Valencia as a striker after the untimely death of
Christian Benítez. After numerous rumors involving the interest of Pachuca
for Valencia, both Parties came to terms and agreed on a transfer in 2014.

On 18th January 2014, Valencia scored his first goal for Pachuca in a 2–1
victory against Tijuana. The following week he scored two goals to in
Pachuca's first away win league match against league champions Club León. He
finished the season as the top goal-scorer with 12 goals, scoring various
braces for Pachuca. Valencia scored his first hatitrick against UNAM in a
2–4 away win to advance in the Liga MX Apertura 2014 Playoffs. On 15 May,
Valencia scored a brace on the first leg of the Liga MX Finals, winning the
away match 3–2. In total Valencia netted 18 times in 23 games for Pachuca
last season and also scored all three of Ecuador's goals at the World Cup
finals in Brazil.

After making three appearances in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification
campaign, he scored his first international goal in a 2–2 draw against
Honduras on 19 November 2013. He continued his good form in 2014, scoring in
three of Ecuador's four pre-tournament friendlies. On 5 March, he scored,
assisted a goal and won a penalty kick as La Tri came from 3–0 down to
defeat Australia 4–3.5 He then scored the team's only goal in a 3–1 loss
against Mexico, and gave them an early lead in a 2–2 draw with England in
Miami. In June 2014, Valencia was named in Ecuador's squad for the 2014 FIFA
World Cup. On 15 June, he made his FIFA World Cup debut in the team's
opening match against Switzerland at the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha in
Brasília, opening the scoring with a header in a 2–1 defeat. In Ecuador's
second match, Valencia scored both goals to defeat Honduras 2–1 in Curitiba.

RAVEL UNDER THE KNIFE

Both West Ham United and his agent Nick Rubbery have moved quickly to dispel
rumours of a missing Ravel Morrison,

West Ham released a statement yesterday saying:

"West Ham United can confirm that Ravel Morrison has undergone successful
minor groin surgery.
The 21-year-old was diagnosed with the condition during pre-season testing
and had a minor procedure at a central London hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
The operation was completed without complications and, following a period of
rehabilitation, it is expected the England U21 midfielder will return to
training in a few weeks when the first-team squad return from New Zealand."

His agent Nick Rubbery also felt compelled to publish this photo of Ravel in
an hospital bed as if to prove the operation actually happened.

The complaint of groin problem by Ravel is nothing new but in the past it
had been claimed there was no proof and Ravel has refused to go under the
knife for an exploratory operation. Morrison missed the Boxing Day defeat
against Arsenal with a groin injury last year although internet rumours
suggested he had gone AWOL,

In February this year Big Sam was quoted as saying

"At the moment, Rav is still complaining about the problem he had before
Christmas, to say he has these rumbling groin problems,At the end of the day
he is going to have to decide if he goes for the hernia operation or not and
the answer keeps being no – he doesn't need it. I haven't heard any rumours
any other way in terms of what is happening with Rav, but he certainly needs
to get back and train with the squad.He has to realise now everybody is fit
there is severe competition here, especially with the new players as well."

friendly of the summer. Jack Marriott and Cameron Stewart went closest to
breaking the deadlock for the Blues in the first half, while former Blue
Aaron Cresswell hit the bar on his return to his old club.

Dean Gerken started in goal for the Blues with Elliott Hewitt at right-back
and Tyrone Mings on the left. Second-year scholar Matt Clarke, 17, was at
the heart of the defence alongside Christophe Berra.

New signings Stewart and Alex Henshall took the right and left wide roles
respectively with Cole Skuse and first-year pro Teddy Bishop at the centre.
Up front, Frank Nouble, facing his old club, partnered Marriott up front.

Cresswell made a quick return to Portman Road having joined the Hammers from
the Blues earlier in the month, while former Town loanee Mark Noble also
started for the visitors.

The Hammers created the game's first opening in the fifth minute, left
winger Matt Jarvis was found in acres of space and sent in a cross which
Cheikhou Kouyate nodded over at the far post.

West Ham continued to threaten and in the seventh minute Cresswell's long
ball found Carlton Cole, who teed-up Jarvis on the edge of the box but the
midfielder, who played for Mick McCarthy at Wolves, blazed over.

Town's first chance came in the 10th minute, Marriott picking up a loose
ball midway inside the Hammers half but scuffing his 20-yard effort wide.

But the visitors were still having the best of it and in the 12th minute
Stewart Downing hit a left-foot shot from 25 yards just over Gerken's
crossbar.

Two minutes later, returning former Blue Cresswell came close to a goal when
a cross from the edge of the area took a deflection, left Gerken flat-footed
but struck the top of the bar.

The Blues broke immediately, Nouble sending Henshall away down the left. The
summer signing from Manchester City crossed towards Marriott, but the ball
was nodded away ahead of the frontman.

Town should have gone in front in the 20th minute when Mings cut the ball
back from the left to an unmarked Stewart, who hit his shot straight at
Nouble.

Stewart might have done better two minutes later when found by Marriott as
he broke into the area but his first touch was too heavy.

Improving Town were inches from going in front in the 26th minute when
Marriott burst past James Collins and into the area on the right. The
19-year-old hit a low cross-shot just beyond the post and ahead of the
diving Nouble.

Three minutes later, only a last-ditch Hewitt challenge diverted Mo Diame's
shot after Noble had found him with a cross from the left.

West Ham were by now again looking the more threatening side and on 34 Mings
did well to get in ahead of Cole after Cresswell had sent in a teasing ball
from the left, then following the resultant corner Noble curled an effort
narrowly wide.

Two minutes before the break Jarvis was again found in space on the West Ham
left but scraped a weak shot straight at Gerken. Just before the whistle,
Diame hit a 20-yard strike which deflected wide.

The only surprise at half-time was that neither side had managed to break
the deadlock given the number of chances at both ends.

Marriott, a threat throughout, will feel he should have done better with his
chance as will Stewart.

Unsurprisingly, Premier League West Ham had most of the better chances but
without Gerken having been forced into a serious save.

As at Shelbourne on Saturday, Mick McCarthy fielded an entirely different XI
in the second half with new signing Bartosz Bialkowski in goal, Jonny Parr
at right-back, Ben Wyatt on the left and Tommy Smith and Luke Chambers at
the centre of the defence.

In central midfield Freddie Veseli partnered Luke Hyam with Jay Tabb on the
left and Paul Anderson on the right. Paul Taylor and Daryl Murphy were up
front. West Ham also switched their entire XI.

Veseli, who spent last week on trial at FC Luzern, struck the second half's
first serious effort but his edge-of-the-area strike looped over Adrian's
cross-bar.

Town had started the second period on top but just before the hour mark Seb
Lletget struck a shot from the edge of the Blues box, Bialkowski saving
comfortably to his left.

An unmarked Chambers headed Anderson's 62nd minute corner over the bar, the
centre-half clearly feeling he ought to have done better. A minute later,
Parr crossed from the right and Murphy flicked a header to Adrian.

For the Hammers, Lletget flicked a 67th minute header wide from Joey
O'Brien's right-wing cross.

Two minutes later, Murphy picked up a loose ball midway inside the West Ham
half before playing it wide to Taylor. The former Peterborough man chipped a
cross towards Veseli at the far post but Josh Cullen got in ahead of him to
nod behind.

Bialkowski did well to keep the scores level in the 72nd minute, making a
superb reaction save from Lletget after the visitors had worked an opening
inside the box. Moments later, the Polish keeper was caught somewhat late by
Kevin Nolan.

As the game moved into its final 10 minutes Ricardo Vaz Te grazed the top of
the net with a freekick from distance, then moments later, the former Bolton
man somehow mis-hit the ball wide from eight yards under pressure from
Wyatt, having been found by sub Paul McCallum's cut-back from the left.

Despite the lack of goals, it had been an entertaining game with the draw
probably the right result. Both sides had chances in either half with
Marriott and Stewart having the Blues' best before the break.

In the second half, Town had more of the ball and created most of the early
chances but new signing Bialkowski was the busier of the two keepers and
will have impressed his new fans with his display.

Rav…his agent…and that hospital picture

Ravel Morrison's footballing life amuses, infuriates and entertains in
almost equal parts! But it's the activities of his agent Nick Rubery which
have attracted interest over the past 24 hours! For on Tuesday evening Mr
Rubery decided to post a picture of his client on Twitter which showed the
midfielder in a hospital bed after a minor surgical operation on his groin.
The question is: WHY?

The West Ham official website had already revealed the news and in a normal
world that should surely be enough. But this of course is Ravel Morrison and
the history of famous 'groin injury' – sustained ahead of the Christmas
programme after he'd been dropped – has never been forgotten. There were
conspiracy theories until now that there was no groin injury but instead
that it was all about the player's differences with the manager.

It became so much the received wisdom that Rav's reputation began to fall
even among some of his most ardent believers Sam Allardyce had a very firm
view on the situation declaring at one point: "Listening to our medical
staff, there is no problem that he can carry on – not at all "He says he
feels it occasionally. Instead of gritting your teeth and getting on with
it… he's not the type. "Lots and lots of players throughout the country will
be playing with a similar type of injury that the medical team say 'you can
carry on, it's not a problem'.

The player was shipped out to QPR on loan where he played games and we
started to arrive at the point where many – perhaps most – believed we
would never see the fella in a West Ham shirt again. But he's back and with
the injury dealt with, maybe Rav's agent had a point in making it clear
there has indeed been a problem, But just why was surgery left so long and
why should the club choose to have it dealt with immediately ahead of the
trip to New Zealand?

Easily answered. Rav is a notoriously bad traveller. Those who know him well
admit that he often feels uncomfortable in foreign parts and as a result
this seemed the ideal time to have the injury sorted. The life and times of
Ravel Morrison has been given too much attention and has become a
distraction.
I believe this is s the biggest season of his career. With the injury issue
dealt with and the club embracing him as a bg part of things, let's believe
he's going to show himself to be the re real deal. There have been far too
many questions hanging over what should be a wonderful career …come on Rav
start giving us the right answers.

Irons give Fulham frosty Cole response

West Ham United have confirmed Fulham are interested in striker Carlton Cole
but have no intention of doing a deal on the terms being offered. News broke
earlier today that manager Felix Magath is keen to pair new signing Ross
McCormack with the Hammers loyalist. The news first appeared on www.kumb.com
but when ClaretandHugh contacted Upton Park sources Fulham were given a
frosty reception to the proposed deal. We were told that there was no chance
of a deal being done on the terms being offered by the Cottagers. Our source
said: " They want Carlton for nothing and he is very much part of our
plans."

Albion are interested in West Ham's Stephen Henderson as they continue their
hunt for a new No. 1. The former Republic of Ireland under-21 international
is on the Seagulls' radar in their quest to replace the departed Tomasz
Kuszczak. Henderson still has a year left on a lucrative contract at West
Ham United but may be prepared to accept a pay cut in search of regular
first team football. Albion could alternatively look to land the 26-year-old
Dubliner on a long-term loan. Henderson has already had seven loan spells
during his career, including stints with Ipswich and Albion's South Coast
rivals Bournemouth last season.
He was due to be with the Cherries for three months but had to return to
Upton Park after dislocating his shoulder in only his second appearance.
Henderson, nephew of former Albion No. 1 Wayne Henderson, began his career
at Aston Villa. The 6ft 2ins shot-stopper also had permanent spells with
Bristol City and Portsmouth before signing two years ago for West Ham, where
he has been limited to two League Cup outings. Albion's search for a
replacement for Kuszczak has been wide-ranging. They are keen to take
Stoke's Jack Butland on loan and were interested in former Sunderland keeper
Keiren Westwood before he signed for Sheffield Wednesday. The Seagulls' trip
to Bournemouth has been brought forward from Saturday November 1 to Friday
October 31 (7.45pm) for live coverage on Sky Sports.

Valencia: He's ours, but not quite!

With the signing of Enner Valencia being on everyone's expectation list (if
such thing ever existed) for the past 10-14 days, we at C&B have every
reason to believe that he will indeed sign but don't expect it to be
announced just yet. If the signing is in fact announced be prepared for it
to be followed by a massive 'IF'.

It is our understanding that the player, himself has agreed a 5 year
contract with the West Ham hierarchy and we also have been led to believe
that his previous club Pachuca have accepted the offer submitted.

Despite the fact that the player and his previous club both tweeted that
they believe a deal has been completed, I think it would be very fair to say
that there's still a few t's that need to be crossed and a couple of i's
that need dotting.

Right now, it would seem that the only obstacles standing in our way are a
few minor loose ends regarding the contract and a possible delay with the
issuing of the necessary work permit.

Another matter worth mentioning is that Enner's previous club have rubbished
any notion that we have paid anything near the £12m reported and have in
fact paid nearer £6.5m with an add on of £2m depending on appearances and
performance. They have also indicated that they have retained a 10% stake in
the player to guarantee income from any further sale.

To cut a long story short, we believe that Mr Valencia is indeed a West Ham
United player bar a few loose ends that should and will be tied up in due
course.

Just don't expect a solid confirmation from the club anytime soon!

scored three times at the World Cup and signed a five-year deal at Upton
